Safari Grill
Ratings and reviews, location and contact.
Had dinner with three other couples at the Safari Grill tonight and the various meat dishes we were served were nothing short of spectacular. We had the Safari Platter and the prawns, chicken and beef were all wonderfully spicy, all very different and yet not... too hot. (There was hot sauce on the table that was sweat inducing if one was so inclined). Two of our friends shared a Serengeti platter and they too were very impressed with the meat. We also hat the Pili-Pili Mogo and Pili Pili Chipsi which again were very tasty, spicy but not overly hot. The flavours were to die for! Top it off with a couple of Tusker beer and you have a wonderful dining experience. We shall be back - if for no other reason to try the curry! More
Fantastic African cuisine. A friend and I have come to this place multiple times. We are rarely in the area but this is where we go. They have fantastic grilled ribs as appetizers. Always a great way to start the meal. There are 4 sauces... that come with the meal, I love the sweet tamarind chutney and it never makes it through the whole meal. I have the paneer chilli curry. So good. My friend had grilled meat skewers with some fried plantains and corn. Everything smelled amazing and we were able to eat on the patio for the sunny day we visited. The staff were excellent and kept the area clean. More
We had not been here for three years because of the pandemic. We took some friends here for their birthday celebrations and we thoroughly enjoyed all of the food that Omar brought us. We also enjoyed Omar's terrific service. When we came back the following... week with our son and his partner, we had a better idea of what we would like to eat and we found that the selections that we made were just as enjoyable as the ones that Omar had made for us the weekend before. One of our guests was allergic to Gluten, and we were pleased to find that many of the food choices here are in fact Gluten Free. Two great visits. More
This place claims to have authentic east African food, but it's the complete opposite. Their masala chips suck, it's basically tomato paste in wedges. Someone needs to teach them how to make African food. Please take a trip to east Africa. Their samaki fish is... also bland, furthermore I ordered chapati and they gave me naan. I don't know how they call themselves "African" they are nothing close. More
Exotic choices so the owner kindly helped us decide what to order. The grilled meats paired well with a really nice South African Cabernet wine. Food was well worth the wait. Will definitely go back to try different dishes.
Got to visit this place over Christmas. Everything! was great! From the pungent smell of amazing bbq/grill/fire/spices that hits you the minute you walk in, to the unique decorations and the excellent service. I loved it all. I will definitely still be dreaming about their... Forodhani Platter and the wonderful creamy pistachio ice-cream for a long while. Thank you for an excellent night! I will for sure be coming again next time Iâm in Calgary. More
Our friends from Edmonton were staying at a nearby Hotel so we decided to meet them here as it was an easy drive for them. We were served by the always friendly Ali, who pretty much decided all food choices for us. All of his... choices were naturally very delicious. Our friends were quite impressed by the quality of both the food and the service. A great meal. More
Just kidding of course, no Zebra on the menu but plenty of other stuff that I can't pronounce. This is my second time here and it is fantastic. Our server helped us decide on dishes for the 6 of us and we were full with... food leftover. The butter chicken and chicken masala are excellent although fairly small portions and balanced on a little dish that sits atop a candle, this can get a little tricky as the dish can easily tip. We got the the shareable meat platter with their famous ribs, cassava. Rice and Naan bread came with some of the chicken dishes. We got an extra dish of ribs that were a little spicier and they were excellent as well. All the dishes have very flavourable and unique taste. Looking around at some of the other dishes being served made me want to try them as well. It will have to wait for my next visit. Our server was top notch, very attentive and polite. A very enjoyable evening. More
There was nothing on the menu that was appetizing. They have a tangy and a vinegary sauce that they add to everything. From about six or seven different items we ordered, I found only the naan (bread) to be good.
We attended the Safari Grill last weekend. Made a reservation, and were warmly greeted and taken to our table by the window. Food is Tanzanian, and while the focus is on curry dishes, there is a good variety for those wishing less spicy fare. We... shared a calabash appetizer, my wife had lamb and I had goat curry. Food was well prepared, very nicely presented, and more than sufficient amounts for any appetite.Service was nicely paced, certainly no rush to get you in and out. Decor is east African and pleasant to the eye, and comfortable seating, lots of room between tables, soft background music, easy to carry on conversations. Soft lighting adds to the atmosphere. Aly, the owner, takes the time to explain any dishes and makes sure they come out spiced to your liking. Lots of parking, a very nice smaller restaurant in NE Calgary. Certainly one of the better specialty restaurants that we have tried. WE plan to return regularly. More
Spiced to perfection! I strongly recommend the Mogo Masala and Lamb Chops. My only disappointment, is that I only get to Calgary once a year!
I booked a table at Safari Grill through Open Table for 2 people. I was taking my friend to celebrate her promotion and I wanted it to be flavourful for her as she is a foodie! We booked the table for 7pm and as expected,... we were warmly welcomed! We ordered the Serengeti Platter. We enjoyed every bite of it and we were glad we went there. The meat was full of flavour, tender and extremely satisfying. I would recommend this restaurant to every person who is looking for an authentic African cuisine. Definitely going back! More
Short ribs are a must, excellent. Had the safari platter along with other excellent dishes. Waitress was very nice and knowledgable. Will go again.
I would say this is my favourite place to eat in Calgary. I try to make it at least once a month. I always have the same thing - ribs (hot or suicide) and masala cassava/mogo. Just can't be beat. I keep thinking about trying... something else, but cannot find a reason to. More
I've said it so many times. South Calgary needs a spot like this! This place truly is awesome. If you've never been to Africa, then Africa comes to you with authentic cuisine. However, if you've been to East Africa, you'll know that the owner, it's... cooking staff and the entire restaurant takes pride in perfectly marinated meat, deliciously made chicken combined right heightened & accentuated flavours from a flaming barbeque. Here are my favourites: -The mogo (fried cassava) is a great appetizer -Beef ribs (non-spicey) is an absolute favourite -Mishkaki (beef skewers) are tender, moist and spicey -Nairobi Badjias If you're looking for a true African meal, try the unique local dish called Ugali. They can serve this with various curries. Overall, if you're looking for one of a kind authentic East African restaurant with the delicious cuisine, this is the place. More

A Guide to African Dining in Calgary
From Somali stewed goat to Tanzanian barbecue, Nigerian jollof and Ethiopian-Eritrean coffee ceremonies, the cityâs African restaurants serve up bold flavours with a side of community.
For so many Calgarians, African restaurants in this city stir up memories of home, serving as portals to the bustling streets of Addis Ababa or Lagos. These portals werenât always so easily accessible. And, even though the number of African dining options has increased in Calgary over the past three decades, they are still spread somewhat thinly throughout the city. The majority of the African food served here is from Ethiopia, Eritrea or Nigeria, limiting Calgarians to a small sampling of Africaâs vast spread of culinary delights.
Some African restaurants in Calgary have thrived for decades, while others have struggled to stay afloat. Many find spaces in the northeast communities where rent is more affordable, while those in Calgaryâs inner-city dining districts often end up paying a premium to attract new customers who are largely unfamiliar with their distinctive cuisines.
Over time, Calgaryâs growing African population has helped bridge this gap. Africans from around the world are migrating to the Prairies faster than any other region in Canada â according to Statistics Canada, the African population in Alberta has quintupled since 1996. This influx of newcomers has enabled more African restaurants to flourish.
The dominance of Ethiopian-Eritrean restaurants in Calgaryâs African food scene reflects the strong local communities. Many Ethiopian and Eritrean Calgarians came here in the early 1980s, fleeing the war in their homelands and seeking a fresh start. The cuisine caters to a variety of dietary preferences â the fussiest of vegans, vegetarians and meat-eaters will all find something to enjoy on an Ethiopian-Eritrean restaurant menu. Communal eating has been at the heart of this cuisine for centuries: Individual plates, knives and forks are not part of the experience; instead, veggie and meat stews come to the table draped with house-made injera (flatbread). Everyone at the table rolls up their sleeves, tears off pieces of injera, and uses it to scoop the tasty offerings into their mouths.
For those who move to Calgary from equatorial Africa, restaurants serving a familiar taste of home are also a welcome retreat from the cold. The magic of the experience starts with a warm greeting from someone who speaks your native tongue and the enticing smells emanating from the kitchen.
Since Calgaryâs African community is so tight knit, the chances of walking into an ex, old Sunday school teacher or cousin are high. Youâll lose control of your hips as you sway to the sounds of the Afrobeats filling the room. Youâre bound to overhear a gathering of African uncles sparring over the state of politics back home; during these intense deliberations, the uncle with the most commanding voice (or the biggest beer belly) will usually assume victory. In the opposite direction, the aunties will have gathered to promote their unmarried nephews studying either law, medicine or engineering (any other career track is not worth mentioning).
Dinner at an African establishment always involves laughter. There is something rather contagious about African laughter: it engages the full force of your stomach, spine and neck while displaying all 32 of your teeth. The sound of this laughter engulfs an entire restaurant, with everyone joining in and creating a vibrant energy.
A visit to any one of the African dining establishments that follow is guaranteed to make your next culinary adventure an unforgettable one, no matter where you come from.
Abyssinia Restaurant
A meal at Abyssinia is a culinary experience that will leave you wanting more. Owner Ewinet Wenendimaguhuâs restaurant has become the premier choice for Ethiopian-Eritrean cuisine in the Beltline area. Most of the furniture, art and even glassware is imported directly from Ethiopia. The dining area features circular tables optimally designed for communal dining. Ewinet tâibs (the name indicates the dish comes highly recommended by the owner) is a fan favourite. Served over kale, this dish features caramelized flank steak, serrano peppers, tomatoes and onions. Another favourite is lamb cha cha tâibs, a crispy fried lamb dish with caramelized onions. Diners can finish with a riveting Ethiopian-Eritrean coffee ceremony served at their table â itâs widely believed that coffee originated in the region that is now Ethiopia-Eritrea, and the coffee ceremony celebrates this important culinary legacy.

Flavours Restaurant
The Nigerian dishes at Flavours Restaurant are bound to satiate even the mightiest cravings. Every meal is prepared from scratch from start to finish. No matter what you order, begin with the goatâs meat pepper soup, which will warm your chilled bones during Calgaryâs winter months. Jollof rice with stewed chicken is another popular menu item. The aromatic, tomato-based dish, a staple at Nigerian weddings and other events, serves as the base for Flavoursâ tasty meat and vegetable stews. A bite of juicy chicken and jollof rice, combined with fried plantains, creates a sweet, spicy and savoury experience. Finish with puff puff â or, what owner Adebola Esan calls âAfrican Timbitsâ â a sweet pastry deep-fried until golden brown.

A whole community has blossomed around this restaurant, which evokes the feeling of a motherâs kitchen. Grab a seat near the gorgeous mural of an African sunset and enjoy warm goat broth â a complimentary treat with eat-in orders. You canât go wrong with Luubaanâs fried rice (a dish with African, Indian and Italian influences) and stewed goat, simmered for hours in traditional Somali spices. Authentic Somali flavours are not easy to find in this city, and Luubaan offers them in abundance.

Safari Grill
You may forget youâre in Calgary when walking into Safari Grill. Throughout the room, there is a strong sense of Tanzanian culture: The space is adorned with a captivating array of African tapestries, paintings and sculptures, while the barbecued meats are prepared with a delicious Tanzanian spice blend. The chicken, beef, short rib and shrimp offerings are all sensational. These meats taste even better when paired with Safariâs pili pili chips â fried potatoes or cassava seasoned in a spicy African pili-pili sauce made with lemon and peppers. After 18 years in business in Calgary, owner Ali Moledina knows many of his customers personally, and his welcoming energy attracts diners from across the province.

TG Juice Bar and Breakfast
This East African eatery, with locations in the Beltline and on International Avenue, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu includes Ethiopian stews and spaghetti dishes, Kenyan ugali beef dishes and even Somali-style breakfast options like foule, a spiced pureed-bean dish. The real draw here is the freshly blended juice: No meal at TG is complete without the legendary house-made mango juice. This refreshing concoction also comes in a mango, pineapple and avocado blend. For dinner, try the gomen (steamed kale) paired with derek tibs (fried beef cubes).

Yenny Delights
Afro-Caribbean food is the name of the game at this popular eatery, where head chef Toyin Adepoju strategically pairs Nigerian and Caribbean cuisines. Printed in big letters on a bright orange backdrop, a sign reads: âThis kitchen is seasoned with love.â The sentiment cannot be denied, especially by the enthusiastic regulars who crave dishes like the authentic Jamaican oxtail paired with Nigerian jollof rice and plantains. Chef Adepojuâs freshly made meat pies are another popular item found in both Jamaican and Nigerian cuisines. The light and flaky crust conceals a savoury chicken or beef filling that goes especially well with some fragrant coconut rice and Yennyâs fall-off-the-bone curried goat.
