One day trip to Alibaug from Mumbai

One day trip to Alibaug | Must visit places in Alibaug

Last Updated on March 5, 2024 by admin

Wondering about places to visit near Mumbai? A one day trip to Alibaug from Mumbai is ideal as there are many many places to visit in Alibaug.

Konkan is special – the beaches, the small temples around villages, the mango trees and slow country life. Diveagar Beach would be one of my favorite beaches in Konkan.

I have vivid memories of visiting the beaches of Alibaug when we used to take the ferry ride from Gateway of India to meet my aunt.

After shifting to Gujarat , I forgot all about those ferry rides and the white sandy beaches of Alibaug till very recently I had the opportunity to visit. I only had a day in Alibaug and I used it to go down memory lane and do the same things I did as a kid and more. Here’s my guide on one day trip to Alibaug.

Table of Contents

About Alibaug

Alibaug has always been a sleepy little town close to Mumbai, only the locals commuted between Alibaug and Mumbai and it was undiscovered for a long time.

But the cacophony of Mumbai only made Mumbaikars seek peaceful environs and cleaner beaches. Thus the party shifted to Alibaug for weddings, birthday celebrations and quick weekend getaways from Mumbai. Alibaug tourism flourished and how!

My visit to Alibaug

I took the morning ferry from Gateway of India, Mumbai to Alibaug. These are government-approved ferry rides that leave every half hour. Memories came rushing back as I sat on the upper deck of the boat and as the boat reversed leaving the beautiful monument behind.

Gateway of India Ferry to Alibaug

A few minutes into the ride, I saw Seagulls flying around the boat as tourists started feeding them with potato chips! It was so bizarre as parents with kids bought Kurkure packets simply to feed the gulls and make a video of it! A seagulls diet is fish and feeding it with chips was utter idiotism.

As furious as I was looking at this, I had to control myself because people wouldn’t listen to me and call me crazy instead. I saw tourists in other ferry boats doing the same. This was a major ‘Facepalm moment’. The same thing I had experienced while on the boat ride to Beyt Dwarka Camping .

I quietly sat down enjoying the view of the sea, the waves crashing on the side of the boat as the littered plastic happily floated in the morning sun’s glory.

In about 40 minutes, I could notice the land on the other side, which meant I was inching closer to Alibaug. And soon enough I did. I deboarded on the Mandwa jetty and took a rather long walk to reach the main area. From the Mandwa jetty, the town of Alibaug is another 40-50 minutes so one can choose to take a bus from the jetty bus stand or hire a private car for the day’s trip. Since I had my cousin’s car in the town, I took a bus to reach the town.

After the family greetings and a quick breakfast at home, I was ready to explore places to visit in Alibaug.

If you are up for breakfast first thing after reaching Alibaug, Kiki’s Cafe & Deli at Mandwa Jetty is an amazing place overlooking Mandwa Beach.

They have lovely breakfast options overlooking the bay and eating here will be an amazing way to start the day. The cafe itself is super cute with bicycles suspended from the ceiling, quirky illustrations all over the wall, and vibrant colours all around.

Places to visit in Alibaug

Alibaug is a typical beach town but has a lot of other places to visit in Alibaug. There are adventure activities, staycation options in the villas, beach visits as well as biodiversity parks to visit.

Alibaug Beach – Kolaba Fort

I certainly wanted to check out the highlight of Alibaug – Kolaba Fort. As a kid, I was fascinated to walk across the ocean in low tide to reach a fort. What also fascinated me was the fact that this fort has sweet water well!

I parked the car outside and walked over the parapet wall to see the low tide in action.

Being the closest to town, the Alibaug beach always is full of life with horse buggies, coconut water vendors and shops selling street snacks. A sitting area gives a good chance to simply relax and enjoy the beach view.

Alibaug water sports is also what brings a lot of tourists. Water sports such as banana boat ride, jet ski and sea kayaking are some of the most popular adventure activities of Alibaug Beach during one day trip to Alibaug.

Horse buggy at alibaug beach

Surrounded by the Arabian Sea waters from all sides lies a fortress which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Alibaug. Although this 300 years fort now lies in shambles, it was a sight a behold during the reign of Shivaji Maharaj in Maharashtra wherein the fort was used as the chief naval station. It is a nationally-protected area under the ASI.

I happily walked to the fort, although taking a horse buggy is also possible! I noticed some local vendors just outside the fort wall selling a local variety of fruits – chana bor, kairi, kakdi, chinch (my mouth is watering as I type this) and others. I got my entry ticket of INR 5 and went in.

Even though the fort is cut off for half the day, there is a community that has been living in the fort for generations and goes about doing their daily work. They have to shift back to the coast during the monsoons, but they spend the rest of the months in their home praying in the fort temple. Their source of water is that one sweet water well and a tank which gets filled with rainwater.

I walked around the fort, checking out the ocean views from each side, paying my respects at the temple and being in awe of the last remnants of the fort like the cannons!

Varsoli Beach

The next stop for my day was Varsoli Beach, a 4 km ride from the town. Varsoli beach makes me feel like I am on one of those Konkan beaches. The pristinely beautiful Varsoli beach is one of the clean beaches in Alibaug and that is one of the best Alibaug visiting places. While an evening stroll around the sunset will give you Goa feels, it is equally mesmerizing in the morning.

I love Varsoli beach for the beautiful forests that lead up to the beach. This place always kind of made me reminisce about old Bollywood movies where the actors danced around such trees to melodious tunes. It’s perfect to overlook the waves while sipping water from fresh coconut. The seafood, as well as veg food, served in shacks is delicious.

Native Biodiversity Garden

This recently opened Biodiversity garden is absolutely worth adding to your one day trip to Alibaug. This 1.25-acre park, in the compound of a government guest house, is owned by the Zila Parishad, sponsored by Shapoorji Pallonji and developed by Mumbai NGO the Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CERE).

The garden boasts of 55,000 plants of 525 indigenous species, especially from the Western Ghats. The entire garden is sustainable as it is manicured to look like a typical garden and is run on solar power. The light fixtures have been fabricated from waste material.

The garden is further divided into several sections like sensory, medicinal, butterfly, wetland, etc. to attract birds, butterflies and insects. At the entrance, you can spot the ginormous 8-foot tall hand-carved Deepmaal that signifies the local custom of welcoming guests with lights.

Dashrat Patel Museum

If you love arts and crafts then Dashrat Patel museum is an offbeat place to visit in Alibaug. The museum houses paintings, ceramic pottery, photography and design-related work by Dashrath Patel, the founding secretary of the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad.

By the time this museum visit is over, it will probably be time to head back to Mandwa jetty for the ride back to Mumbai. Before doing that I would recommend you to catch up on high tea at one of the many amazing Cafes in Alibaug.

Where to Eat in Alibaug

Going back to Alibaug town from Dashrat Patel Museum would be a long journey. So instead just head to the exit destination and choose from the many beautifully decorated cafes at Mandwa Jetty.

If you are in for picturesque sea views, I will highly recommend spending time at Boardwalk By Flamboyante. This waterfront restaurant is right between the bridge that takes you to the boats and the parking lots, so saves tons of time in commuting and there’s never a fear of not catching the ferry back. There is an outdoor seating area as well as an indoor area if it gets too hot outside.

With wide arrays of dishes, the menu has something for everyone. Their thin-crust pizzas, fries, burgers and coffee are amazing.

How to Reach Alibaug from Mumbai?

In order to cover one day trip to Alibaug there is an efficient transportation system.

Alibaug’s distance from Mumbai is about 100 km. The quickest transport to get to Alibaug from Mumbai is by boat from the Gateway of India. It is a 40 minutes ride by ferry and approximately 20 minutes in a speed boat. One can also hire private yachts for groups that take over an hour to reach the Mandwa Jetty. Alibaug Ferry time starts as early as 6 am and the last one from either side is around 6 pm. Tickets are available on the spot.

Note: Alibaug weather is bad during the monsoon and hence ferries are closed during the entire duration of the monsoon (Mid June to the end of September).

Recently, Mumbai to Alibaug Ro-Ro car ferry service has started which will work even in monsoon and reduce the road travel time.

From the jetty, it takes additional 30-40 minutes by bus, taxi or auto-rickshaw to get into town. The buses don’t function past 6 pm and the taxis and autos charge a super expensive fare.

One can reach Alibaug from Mumbai by road which takes up to three and a half hours. Government-run buses ply on this route every day.

Mumbai to Mandawa by M2M Ferry Experience: One day Trip to Alibaug

The warm breeze slowly caressing my face, salty wind brushing my hair, seagulls soaring in the sky showing us the way ahead and the sea water shining bright in the rays of the sun, an afternoon journey well spent on M2M ferries.

Mumbai to Alibaug travel

The road journey from Mumbai to Alibaug is a tedious one (110 kms) and I for once used to dread the long journey. Imagine my joy when I heard about this ferry service from Mumbai to Mandawa jetty in less than 1 hour. Sounds amazing right?

M2M Ferry Service

M2M Ferries is an initiative between the Mumbai Port trust and the Maharashtra Maritime Board to offer world class Roll – On – Roll – Off – Passenger (Ro – Pax) ferry service in Maharashtra. The best part is it cuts down the journey from 110 kms (by road) to 19 kms just 1 hour (by sea) and is operational throughout the year. The M2M ferry operates between Mumbai and Alibaug.

Why should one travel by M2M Ferries?

M2M Ferries Mumbai to Alibaug

Whilst there are plethora options of travelling from the Gateway of India to Mandawa, one should definitely experience travelling by M2M ferries what with its first class chic lounges, food & drinks on board providing you a world class experience. The M2M ferry has a gigantic deck giving you the Titanic feels.

The best part about travelling through M2M ferries is that your “Vehicle” and “pets” can travel with you. How cool is that?

Well more on it a bit later..

Where to board the M2m ferry from?

Entrance of M2M Ferries – Mumbai to Alibaug

One has to arrive at Bhaucha Dhakka in Mazagaon where this mighty beauty is docked. There are ample options of reaching Bhaucha Dhakka. One can either opt for a private taxi or the A41 public bus service running from Colaba via Gateway of India to Bhaucha Dhakka Ferry Wharf.

The boarding process is smooth and fast. There is a separate line for vehicle entry and passenger entry.

There are 2 scenarios here,

If you booked your tickets online

In this case, you need to showcase the barcode that you would have received over email. Once the staff at the ticket issuing counter checks the authenticity of the bar code, you are handed over physical tickets.

If you havent booked tickets online

In this case, you have to pay upfront and get the tickets.

The Waiting Area

M2M Ferries Waiting lounge

Since the jetty does not have a cover overhead to provide any shade from the scorching heat in Mumbai, M2M ferries have thoughtfully build an air conditioned waiting room to relax till one boards the ferry.

Entering the M2M Ferry

M2M Ferries Priority Check In lane

We made our way through the well paved road which by the way has directions marking perfectly to guide you ahead. The climb up from the jetty to the M2M ferry was a smooth ride. The ferry has fasteners on the floor should you wish to secure your car.

View of M2M Ferries from the Deck

We secured our car and climbed our way to the deck. As soon as one reaches the deck, the Mumbai sea breeze seems invigorating. We made our way to the front of the deck, which has a covered seating arrangement, where the sun was blazing and the water of the ocean was dazzling like diamonds. It was such a happy sight to watch some kids squeaking with glee and pointing out in excitement to the seagulls.

I smiled looking at Naved and felt very happy in that moment!

We decided to head back inside to the cool comfort of air conditioning and to gorge on some snacks.

The 3 Seating Zones on M2M Ferry

Alibaug is a beach near Mumbai. The seashore city is named Alibaug and the beach in the city is Alibaug beach.

It has many water sports, horse rides, camel rides, beach bike rides etc.

Note: You may at times hear people saying “ Alibaug se Aaya he kya? “. This become famous due to movies or some other events. It means they feel your comments or actions are that of a naive person. So check what you just did without taking any offense.

There are two ways to reach AlibaugBeach, get a ferry/boat from Gateway of India (it’s around 1hr ride) or by road (its a 3-4 hrs ride).

To reach Gateway Of India, get Mumbai local train ticket Online or from the counter. Once you reach CSMT or Churchgate, you will find a mini AC bus from just outside CST, Churchgate station towards Gateway. The ticket is Rs.6 only!

You can also take a taxi (kali peeli) from the station or other bus that will drop you at Regal Theater. From Regal bus stop, its 5minute walk to the Gateway.

From Gateway of India, boat service will cost you around Rs.200-250 per person. You can buy the ticket from the Tourist center opposite the Gateway Of India.

The ferry will drop you at Mandava, and from there you take a bus to AlibaugCity (included in the boat fare). The beach is further ahead (1.5km), you can get an auto for Rs.30/- to the beach from Mandava.

Note: There are 3 boat service providers:

  • Apollo & Ajanta: These are economical non ac boats & cost is around Rs.160/. Maximum people take this option hence boat and connecting bus is croweded.
  • PNP: This is a AC boat, will cost you around Rs.220/-. The advantage is you will not find the boat and bus croweded & get the luxary feel.
  • M2M Ferry: This is super luxury. You can take your 4 wheeler & 2 wheelers also in this boat! Cost is around Rs.300/ per person and Rs.1100/- for a mid size car. This service is from Bhau cha Dhakka (near Dockyard Road station). Tickets are available online only.

You can visit Alibaut beach any time of the year but I feel the best season to visit Alibaug is Nov to January. The weather is pretty pleasant during this time.

In other months it will be too hot and humid or too much rain will spoil your trip.

Alibaug beach and its activities can be easily covered in one day. You can start early and come back by evening.

👌🏻 Cool Accessories for Bikers 👇🏼

Apart from enjoying the senic sun rise and sun set, you can do following activities on Alibaug beach:

  • Build sand castle
  • Take a dip in the sea
  • Para sailing
  • Visit Alibaug (Kolaba) fort, you can walk during low tide else will have to take a boat

You can either make your Alibaug beach a picnic by carrying food and stuff or eat from the restaruants near the beach. Both Veg and Non-veg restaurants can be found nearby.

Alibaug is one of the better beached around Mumbai. The boat ride adds to its excitement. This is a good one day budget trip.

The rides available at beach are fun, there is good connectivity from and to the beach. All in all, a great one day outing with family and friends.

Your first stop during your One Day Pune to Alibaug Trip by Cab would set your expectations from Alibaug really high, and not to worry, this beach town simply won’t disappoint you.

Loved by both adults and kids, the waters are calm and safe for a comfortable swim. On the coastline, you can find various Palm, Suru and Casuarina trees that add to the aesthetics of the beach.

  • Things To Do: One can eat a vada pav, drink coconut water, swim or stroll around and enjoy the calm atmosphere that this beach has to offer.
  • Timings: Sunrise to Sunset
  • Entrance Fee: Free
  • Recommended Duration: 1 Hour

2. Alibaug Beach

Giving you a completely different vibe as compared to Varsoli Beach is the Alibaug Beach. It is indeed the most popular amongst all for it provides you with a stunning view of the majestic Kolaba Fort also known as the Alibaug Fort.

One of the lengthiest beaches, it stretches over 4 km and the coastline with tall green trees makes it look absolutely stunning.

This black-sand beach is also crowded with tourists but a day trip to Alibaug wouldn’t be complete without you visiting its most famous beach. And the crowd only adds to the charm and gives it the touristy vibe.

You can also visit the 400-year-old Ganpati Temple which is very popular amongst the residents of Alibuag.

  • Things To Do: Enjoy the Horse ride here that takes you along the coastline and the view of the Arabian Sea during the ride will surely fill your heart with tranquility. Additionally, the beach is also famous for various adventure activities as well like sky kayaking, kite surfing and jet ski which can be availed at a reasonable price.
  • Recommended Duration: 1 hour

3. Kolaba Fort / Alibaug Fort

A walk along the Alibaug beach will take you to the Kolaba Fort. The fort that was constructed under the reign of Shivaji Maharaj is representative of all that the Maratha Empire stood for.

On a high tide, one needs to take a small ferry ride to reach the fort. A visit to this sea fort is surely going to be the highlight of your 1 Day Pune to Alibaug Trip.

The height of the fort walls is approximately 25 feet and the fort houses various temples, and the Dargah of Haji Kamaluddin Shah. There is a temple dedicated to Siddhi Vinayak and the temple attracts a lot of people during Ganesh Chaturthi.

On the northern wall of the fort, one can find the two English Cannons mounted on wheels while in its centre, one can find a water tank.

This fort also played an important role as a chief naval station and helped in the launching of attacks against the British army.

This magnificent fort overlooking the sea despite being over 300 years old is well maintained and is a treat to the eye. Owing to its historical significance, this monument is now being protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

  • Things To Do: Being surrounded by sea on all four sides, the fort gives a panoramic view of the Arabian sea making it quite a sight to hold. It is also an ultimate delight for photography enthusiasts.
  • Timings: Open on all days of the week from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Entrance Fee: Rs.5

4. Akshi Beach

While planning your beach-side day trip to Alibaug, do remember to add Akshi Beach because of its uncluttered nature. A stretch of coconut trees run by the Akshi Beach, and with the cool breeze embracing your face and the clear fine sand intertwining with your feet, you will be nothing less than delighted to be here.

A vantage point between Nagaon beach and Alibag beach, Akshi beach is mostly a fisherman’s cove and hence it is not populated by locals or tourists and remains mostly hidden.

If you are a bird enthusiast and have the eye for bird spotting, try and look for Seagulls, Bar-tailed Godwit, Dunlin who are often seen at this beach.

  • Things To Do: Basking under the sun, taking a rest and having a picnic, Askhi beach is ideal for spending some alone time away from the crowd and enjoying the laid-back beach life.

5. Nagaon Beach

Slightly on the outskirts of Alibaug is the Nagaon Beach which is famous for being one of the cleanest beaches of Maharashtra. Since it is located 9 km away from the city centre, many tourists do not opt for Nagaon Beach making it unexposed to most.

Owing to the silky, uncluttered sand and low tides, water sports become a suitable activity at Nagaon Beach.

Its fresh and gentle aura makes it very picturesque and extremely friendly for those who are aiming for a quiet time. The last activity that we will indulge in during our One Day Pune to Alibaug Trip by Cab will be to see the sunset at this beach.

One can see the blue sky merge with the rosier hues and the setting it creates can be overwhelming.

  • Things To Do: Indulge in water-sports activity at Nagaon Beach. One can find various operators conducting parasailing, jet-skiing, motorboat ride, banana boat ride, and bumper ride for a nominal price.
