LGBTQ+ Pride

Houston's new faces of pride to host community meeting on april 25.

KTRK logo

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- With two big LGBTQ+ Pride parades happening downtown in June, Houston's New Faces of Pride knows you have questions.

The city's newest Pride organization is hosting a community meeting to give you answers about this year's celebration and a chance to meet its board.

The public meeting will happen Thursday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Montrose Center.

President Bryan Cotton told ABC13 he has heard from many in the community who were surprised by news of Houston's dual Pride parades, both happening a week apart.

"We want to clear up any confusion that anyone might have, and just tell them about all the great things we're doing," Cotton said.

During the meeting, visitors will also have a chance to help shape the new parade and festival by signing up as a volunteer.

"There's a phrase that I heard a long time ago that always resonated with me, and it's, 'Volunteers are not paid, and it's not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless,'" parliamentarian Tim Stokes said. "We will take anyone who wants to come and join us... because it's a big thing."

Organizers said they hope to sign up about 500 volunteers, including runners, stage hands, parade personnel, and logistics services.

You can learn more about volunteer opportunities at NewFacesofPride.org .

The first Houston's New Faces of Pride Parade and Festival will take over downtown on Saturday, June 22.

After rainy wait, Tigers cruise to series-opening win

D ETROIT — Tarik Skubal pitched five scoreless innings and the Detroit Tigers combined soft singles with big hits to beat the Minnesota Twins 8-2 on Friday night at Comerica Park.

The Tigers (8-4) and Twins (4-7) play three more times this weekend, including a doubleheader on Saturday.

The game started after a 65-minute delay after two days of seemingly interminable rain abated at about 7 p.m. Even so, it was a cold and windy night for the players and 12,434 fans who braved the elements.

“It’s just April in Michigan,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said.

Veteran outfielder Mark Canha, who has been the Tigers’ most consistent hitter through the first dozen games, scored the first run with a solo homer to left off Twins starter Pablo Lopez.

It was one of only a few big swings for the Tigers, who did most of their damage by taking advantage of free baserunners.

The Tigers scored six runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings: Five of the six scored after reaching base on a walk or hit-by-pitch.

The other was Riley Greene, who hammered the ball to left-center for a double in the fifth inning and then scored on Gio Urshela’s bouncer to short.

Skubal has had more glamorous performances, but this was an effective outing. He struck out five and allowed just two hits. A few long at-bats pushed his pitch count to 93 and his fastball velocity waned in the final innings, but he handed a lead to the bullpen.

“I didn’t have the best feel for the fastball today, but the changeup made up for it,” Skubal said.

Skubal threw the change 30 times and got 14 called or swinging strikes.

“Everything that he did tonight was vintage Tarik,” Hinch said. “He was dominating the strike zone. His misses were near misses if they were misses at all. He was relentless at coming at guys and it cost him some foul balls.”

Alex Faedo and Andrew Chafin combined to pitch three scoreless innings. Will Vest allowed a couple of doubles in the ninth to lose the shutout.

Rookie outfielder Wenceel Perez, who entered late as a defensive replacement, reached base for the first time in his MLB career when he walked against reliever Jay Jackson in the eighth inning. He scored from first on Matt Vierling’s double to the gap.

The double knocked Jackson from the game, and Twins manager Rocco Baldelli turned to former Tigers infielder Willi Castro for the final out. Throwing about 45 mph, Castro got Colt Keith to ground out to second to end the inning.

The Tigers have now won two in a row, although the wins were separated by about 78 hours.

“I hated the days off because we had a nice win in Pittsburgh and then you just sit there and don’t get a ton of work,” Hinch said. “So you kind of wonder, ‘Are we starting over again?’ But our guys were into it the whole day. No complaining about the weather. No whining about the cold. This is just a group that was ready to get out on the field.”

Correa concern : Twins shortstop Carlos Correa struck out looking to end the top of the third inning and didn’t come back out for the bottom of the frame. The team said he left with a right oblique sprain. Castro took his place at shortstop.

Just play it : If the circumstances were different, the Tigers and Twins might have been content to postpone Friday night’s game for the unpleasant weather alone. But the Tigers were getting stir-crazy after Thursday’s postponement gave them back-to-back off days.

“We need to play tonight,” Hinch said before the game. “I’m not completely in control of that, but we need to play tonight. It’s easy to kick it down the road, but we need to get our season underway. We’re here. We’re prepared.”

Up next : The Tigers and Twins will play two on Saturday with the first game starting at 1:10 p.m. and the second game starting 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first.

Tigers right-hander Kenta Maeda will start the opener against Twins righty Joe Ryan.

In Game 2, both teams will call up pitchers using the extra roster spot afforded by the doubleheader. For the Tigers, it will be right-hander Matt Manning. The Twins will pitch right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson

Richardson will be making just his third career start. He made one start for the Twins in 2022 and one in 2023.

The 23-year-old was drafted by the New York Mets out of high school in 2018. He’s been dealt twice at the deadline, first to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2019 and then to the Twins in 2021 as part of the Jose Berrios deal .

Manning will be making his second start of the season for the Tigers, both as a 27th man for a doubleheader. He’s yet to pitch for Triple-A Toledo. Manning didn’t allow a run or a hit in 5 2/3 innings in his start on April 4 against the Mets . He walked four and struck out three.

Maeda has had a couple of less-than-sterling starts in his young tenure with the Tigers. The veteran right-hander, who signed a two-year deal this winter, allowed three runs on two hits over 5 2/3 innings on April 6 against the Oakland Athletics . He walked four batters and threw 40 balls among his 87 pitches in his first start in Detroit as a Tiger.

Ryan is already building on a strong 2023 campaign. He’s struck out 12 and walked one over two starts and 11 1/3 innings.
