The best esim for austria | prepaid data plan buyer’s guide.

What travelers need to know about buying a prepaid eSIM data plans in Austria.

phones and technology

austria tourist esim

A prepaid eSim data plan is a cheap and easy way to get high-speed data while visiting Austria and the rest of Europe—so don’t waste money on your current plan’s expensive international data service package. To help you find the best prepaid eSIM for Austria, I’ve crunched the numbers and compared multiple plans to help you find the best option for your trip.

In A Rush?  I recommend buying an eSIM plan from either  SimOptions  or  Holafly . Both companies offer multiple affordable prepaid data plans—continue reading this article for more in-depth, specific recommendations.

The Downside Of Using Your Current Plan’s International Data Package

Almost every mobile provider has an international data plan option but there are two significant downsides:

  • They’re expensive
  • Service is often slow, inconsistent, and has limited data allowances.

For example, the  AT&T International Day Pass costs $10/day. They also have their AT&T Passport plan, a monthly plan that’s either $70/month for 2GB of data or $140/month for 6GB. Then they charge an insane overage of $30 per GB.

And many T-Mobile customers get free “unlimited” international data but you’re only guaranteed 2g data speeds… which will struggle to load Google Maps or even email. You can pay more to get better speeds but then you’ll be charged a premium.

These “international data plans” are 5X as expensive as buying a prepaid eSIM data plan from a third-party provider—for example, eSIM data plans from  Orange  or  Holafly  will cost you around $2-$4/day.

Comparing The Best eSIM Data Plans For Austria

eSIM Europe Data Plan

Austria has three major mobile carriers ( A1 Telekom Austria , Magenta (T-Mobile) Austria , and Three Austria ) but it’s difficult for short-term visitors and tourists to get an Austrian eSIM from a local provider because eSIMs are typically only offered to customers with long-term contracts.

In addition, the Austrian government now requires that every SIM card sold in Austria must be registered and long-term contracts must be connected to an Austrian bank.

Your only real option is buying a prepaid eSIM data plan that’s tailored for short-term visitors. These plans are much more “tourist-friendly” so you don’t have to mess with registration, weird translation issues, etc.

For this guide, I’ll focus on these “tourist-friendly” eSIM plans.

Each eSIM plan I’ve listed is slightly different so pay attention to the specific details—here are the main things to consider:

  • Data Allowance:  Plans typically give you a set amount of mobile data (i.e. 5GB, 10GB, 30GB, etc) but others give you unlimited data over a set amount of time (5 days, 15 days, 30 days, etc).
  • Plan Length:  eSIM data plans can be valid anywhere from about 5 days to 90 days.
  • Mobile Hot Spot Tethering:  Many eSIM plans don’t allow data tethering so you can’t always use your phone as a mobile hot spot.
  • NOTE: You can still use iMessage to “text” between iPhones but you can’t send messages between iPhones and Android phones. Or you can download WhatsApp to send messages over data (which is what most Europeans do).

Holafly Austria Unlimited Data eSIM With Europe Calling

austria tourist esim

  • 10 Days: $34
  • 15 Days: $47
  • 20 Days: $54
  • 30 Days: $64
  • 60 Days: $84
  • 90 Days: $99
  • Service Speed:  5G/4G/LTE
  • Calls coverage:  60 minutes of credit make calls from all of Europe—except Iceland, Norway, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Turkey. Comes with an Austrian phone number.
  • SMS:  None
  • Data Tethering:  No
  • Data service works everywhere in the EU

Holafly  is a new Spain-based eSIM provider that I previously used while in Europe and had a great experience. Holafly sells both Austria-specific plans and Europe-wide data plans.

Unlike other mobile data companies, Holafly gives you unlimited data and a local phone number with 60 minutes of credit for making/receiving calls from European numbers. I also like how Holafly’s plans come in durations from 5 to 90 days—so you don’t have to over/underbuy for your particular trip.

Holafly isn’t an actual mobile carrier but they rent bandwidth from local mobile provider networks—the only downside is that you’re more likely to get less priority on the local network during peak usage times.

Holafly doesn’t allow data tethering in most cases so you won’t be able to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

You can read my in-depth Holafly review to learn more about my experiences using Holafly.

Bouygues My European eSIM with Europe Calling

Best eSIM Austria - My European eSIM Plan

Bouygues Telecom is a major French telecommunications company and they’ve recently released their own prepaid eSIM data plan to compete with the popular Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. I used a prepaid Bouygues SIM card on a previous trip to Europe so I’m glad they’re finally offering an eSIM.

There’s a lot to like about the Bouygues My European eSIM plan—especially since it comes standard with 30GB of data and unlimited calls/texts within Europe. I also like how this Bouygues eSIM plan is valid for 30 days so it’s a great option for longer trips.

  • Price: $44.90 (Check SimOptions for details)
  • Data Tethering: Allowed
  • Service Speed: 4G/LTE
  • Calls: Unlimited within Europe and credit for overseas calls
  • Texts/SMS: Unlimited within Europe and credit for overseas sms
  • Credit validity: 30 day
  • Phone Number: This eSIM card comes with a French phone number
  • Coverage : Anywhere within the European Union (except Switzerland)

Orange Holiday Europe eSIM (50GB)

austria tourist esim

  • Price:  $59.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  50GB
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 120 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 1000 outside of Europe.
  • Credit validity:  28 day
  • Data Tethering:  Allowed
  • Usable on any device (phones, tablets, hotspots…)
  • This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used anywhere in Europe
  • Service works everywhere in the EU

Need tons of data? Consider the newly released  Orange Holiday Europe 50GB eSIM data plan  which is a beefed-up version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM. It has 50GB of data and it’s valid for 28 days (compared to 14 days with the Orange Holiday Europe plan). This eSIM also comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that works anywhere in Europe).

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot so you can put that extra data allowance to good use. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

ORANGE HOLIDAY EUROPE ESIM FOR Austria

Best eSIM Austria - Orange Holiday Europe eSIM Prepaid Data Plan

  • Price:  $49.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  30GB (recently upgraded from 20GB)
  • Credit validity:  14 day

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM data plan is the most robust eSIM plan on this list because it comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that will work anywhere in Europe). The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

This plan comes with 20GB of data but Orange sometimes runs a special where they give you an extra 10GB—but even 20GB should be plenty of data for most users. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

The potential downside to the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM is that it’s only valid for 14 days once activated so it’s not great for longer visits (but you can always buy a second plan).

I’ve personally used the Orange Holiday Europe plan while traveling through Europe and it worked flawlessly. Read my Orange Holiday Europe review to hear more.

ORANGE HOLIDAY ZEN ESIM FOR AUSTRIA

Best eSIM Austria - Orange Holiday Zen eSIM Prepaid Data Plan

  • Price:  $29.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  8GB (they sometimes give you 15GB of data)
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 30 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 200 outside of Europe.

The Orange Holiday Zen eSIM is the budget version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan listed above. It comes with 8GB of data and has fewer voice minutes and texts, otherwise, it’s the same as the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan.

Most users will use more than 8GB of data while traveling for a week or two but light data users could easily use less than 8GB of data during a typical 10-14 day trip.

MORE TIPS ON USING YOUR MOBILE PHONE IN AUSTRIA

austria tourist esim

I’ve written extensively about using  smartphones and data plans in Europe  and tips for  buying SIM Cards For Visiting Europe  but below are some more helpful tips about using your phone in Austria.

GET A PORTABLE BATTERY CHARGER

I highly recommend a portable battery charger while traveling to ensure your phone doesn’t die in the middle of the day. I use  Anker PowerCore 10000  because it’s tiny and affordable but there are multiple options.

TAKE STEPS TO LOWER YOUR MOBILE DATA USAGE

It’s extremely easy to unknowingly burn through a lot of data because many apps continue to use data in the background. Facebook, email, Instagram, Snapchat… those all constantly use data throughout the day without you knowing it. That’s it’s important to know how to limit your data usage.

USE AIRPLANE MODE AND BLOCK DATA TO SPECIFIC APPS

I’ll put my phone in Airplane Mode because that disables all data (but GPS still works in Airplane Mode). You can also disable data access to each individual app in the settings. I’ll go in and turn every off except for things like Google Maps or others that I’ll use more frequently — this way when I turn off Airplane Mode only those apps that will use data. Then I’ll turn Airplane Mode back on when I’m done.

DOWNLOAD OFFLINE MAPS

Google Maps lets you download entire city maps so they can be used offline. As an added bonus, GPS doesn’t use data so offline Google Maps works fairly well (but not all functionality works). Here is a good  YouTube video  that explains everything.

What's The Best eSIM For Austria? We've Ranked the Top Providers in 2024

austria tourist esim

Jarrod Suda

A writer and editor at Monito, Jarrod is passionate about helping people apply today’s powerful finance technologies to their lives. He brings his background in international affairs and his experiences living in Japan to provide readers with comprehensive information that also acknowledges the local context.

Known for its imperial architecture in Vienna, a lively classical music scene, and quaint villages, Austria isn't popular with tourists without reason. If you're planning to visit the country soon, it should come as no surprise that you won't be able to call, SMS, or access the web on the go with your smartphone as you usually would at home, and if you do manage to get connected via roaming, it can result in hefty additional charges.

However, none of this means you should leave your smartphone at home. If your device is a newish model (i.e., from 2019 or later), there's a good chance it'll support an eSIM. These nifty digital SIM cards can be downloaded and installed before you travel, promising blazing-fast internet in Austria at a very low cost compared to roaming and great convenience compared to physical SIMs. In this guide, we explore everything you have to know about eSIMs in Austria and what the best deals might be for you.

Dodge sky-high roaming costs, unexpected data charges, or spotty service on your trip to Austria by using an eSIM from Airalo to connect directly to local network providers like A1 (Telekom Austria). ✨ If you're a new customer, use code MONITO15 to get 15% off your first Airalo eSIM, and if you're a returning customer, use MONITO10 to get 10% off today! Go to Airalo now to get started.

As we'll explore in more depth in this guide, when choosing an eSIM, you have two options. The first option is for you to go through a digital eSIM provider, and the second option is to purchase an eSIM directly from your network provider or carrier. We strongly recommend the first option. After all, with reputable online providers, you can always be sure you'll get good support, excellent rates, and quality instructions that normally exceed those of the big carriers.

According to our review and comparison of the best options on the market, here are the three best eSIM providers for Austria and other countries worldwide:

Best Overall: Airalo

Airalo  is an excellent eSIM provider for Austria . Its online platform offers global access to eSIMs through collaboration with big local telecom providers. In Austria, for example, Airalo works directly with 3AT, one of Austria's largest network operators, to provide you with high-speed coverage directly from their networks, wherever you are in the country.

Once-off prices for eSIMs for Austria range from $4.50 to $12 and include between 1 GB and 20 GB of data. Depending on your plan, that's just $0.60 to $4.50 per gigabyte! Most travellers should be able to get by with these amounts without any problems. Setting up and activating your eSIM happens entirely on your smartphone and it's very quick – in our test, it took us just two minutes (watch our how-to video on YouTube to see how it's done). What's more, if you start running low on data during your trip, you can easily top this up via the Airalo app. This saves you time and hassle compared to buying a physical SIM, where you'd usually need to stand in line at the counter to buy or top up your card or package (which can sometimes take a while in Austria!).

We also recommend Airalo in general, especially if you travel overseas often. The service provides an excellent connectivity companion while you're abroad in dozens of countries. To find out more about this excellent eSIM provider, take a look at our in-depth Airalo review .

Considering Airalo? Take advantage of the following special offers until the 31st of December 2024:

  • New customer? Use the code   MONITO15   to claim a 15% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.  Ts & Cs  apply.
  • Returning customer? Use the code  MONITO10  to claim a 10% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.

Go to Airalo now to get started! ✨

Best For Unlimited Data: Holafly

Holafly  is another trusted eSIM service which also offers eSIMs for Austria. The remarkable thing about Holafly is that it only provides packages with unlimited data for Austria and other countries worldwide. Although these packages cost quite a bit more than the smaller Airalo packages, in return, they offer the certainty that you'll never use up all your data.

For trips to Austria, Holafly's data packages cost between $19 and $99 once off and are valid from five to 90 days. Like Airalo, Holafly's plans in Austria give you data via 3AT (Drei).

Although Holafly's packages are generally great if you'd like uncapped access to the web, it's worth remembering that most travellers don't usually need such a large sum of data and that normally, 5 GB to 10 GB, at most, should be enough for everyday travel needs in Austria like navigating, browsing, and using social media. Moreover, your speeds might be temporarily throttled if you use a very extensive amount of data (e.g., for non-stop HD streaming or downloading large files). During our test in the UK, this happened to us at around 4.5 GB of usage. Sadly, Holafly's fair use policies don't clearly outline when networks throttle speeds since it comes down to the individual network or carrier and the country you're browsing in.

If you're curious, we tested Holafly extensively to see if its data plans really live up to their 'unlimited' promise. The short answer? Yes, but there are a few things you should know. Take a look at our Holafly review to find out what they are.

Considering Holafly? Use the code  MONITO  at checkout to claim a 5% discount on all Holafly eSIMs. Go to Holafly now to get started! ✨

Another Reliable Alternative: Yesim

austria tourist esim

A smaller and newer company than Airalo and Holafly, Yesim  is a Swiss-based eSIM provider offering highly-rated eSIMs for Austria and other countries around the globe. Its website and app are simple, straightforward, and easy to use, and over 300,000 customers have chosen Yesim's eSIMs so far.

Like its larger competitors, Yesim gives you an eSIM card connecting to local carriers while you're in Austria (specifically 3AT and A1 networks). It can be installed quickly and effortlessly right from the app or via a QR code sent to your email after purchase. Interestingly, alongside its eSIM service, Yesim also offers a virtual number service that allows you to get an online-only US (+1), Canadian (+1), or Israeli (+972) mobile phone number to use for apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, OpenAI, Binance, Tinder, or TikTok. These virtual numbers can be used for a flat fee of $2.75 per month.

Going back to eSIMs, Yesim's packages typically cost between $9.90 and $30.80 for 3 GB to 20 GB (that's just $1.54 to $3.30 per gigabyte ), with contract durations lasting from seven to 30 days. Yesim also offers three unlimited packages in Austria for varying durations (7, 15, and 30 days), although these plans are, in fact, limited to 7 GB, 15 GB, and 30 GB respectively. This comes to around $3.00 per gigabyte, which is a very decent price for data in Austria. Plus, you'll also get an additional 5 GB per package for free if you exceed the limit.

Although well-priced, all of this still makes Yesim's packages ever-so-slightly less attractive than Airalo's for traveling to Austria. However, it's worth remembering that, depending on your plan, Yesim's prices can sometimes be fractionally lower per gigabyte than Airalo's, so if you're looking for the best deal, make sure you visit Yesim's website and compare their prices to Airalo's directly.

How Do They Compare?

In the chart below, we've compared Airalo, Holafly, and Yesim based on a few factors you might find important on your trip to Austria or anywhere else in the world. As you'll see, the three are very competitive, with differences normally being slight. If you'd like to compare Holafly and Airalo directly, take a look at our side-by-side review of the two too.

Which Austrian Carrier Is Best?

Outside the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria

Austria has several mobile network operators, and in recent years, the country has experienced a boom in coverage, network speeds, and price reductions for local customers. These are the three largest mobile network carriers by the number of subscribers as of the end of 2023:

  • A1 (Telekom Austria)
  • Magenta Telekom

No matter which of these three networks your eSIM connects to, you can rest assured that you'll enjoy good coverage in pretty much all cities and tourist destinations in Austria. However, your coverage might become spotty or unstable if you travel to a more remote region of Austria, particularly places like the Alps.

If you'd like to double-check if the region you're traveling to is covered by various operators, take a look at this handy map . According to their website, the network with the widest coverage is A1, although Magenta and 3 offer extensive coverage too.

💳 Planning to use your credit or debit card on your Austrian trip? You'll probably pay much more than you think in hidden exchange rate fees every time you tap your card or withdraw cash. Get a free global account and debit card with Revolut to avoid these fees and save money. Check out our ranking of the best prepaid travel debit cards to find out more about how you can save.

Do I Need a SIM Card in Austria?

Austria Alps

No, you don't need a SIM card as a tourist in Austria, but having one will enable you to access useful travel apps like Google Maps, social media, Uber, or Duolingo without having to rely on WiFi.

A good place to start would be to review your contract from your mobile network provider before you travel to Austria. Most contracts are limited to use just within your home country. If you live in an EU country, then you should be able to connect to data in Austria since it is part of the European Union. For all other countries, so-called 'roaming charges' typically apply. However, there is one exception: specific contracts sometimes allow you to use your data worldwide. If you have a global internet contract, you can also use it in Austria without unexpected roaming charges.

Otherwise, although precise roaming charges differ according to your network provider, the fees for using mobile internet in Austria are typically around $2 or $3 per 6 MB (six megabytes) of data used, though they could still be higher. For example, if you wanted to download an average-sized app from the Google Play Store onto your Android smartphone, you'd use around 24 MB and pay $8 to $10 in roaming charges. It should, therefore, be clear that roaming with your regular SIM card in Austria is generally not worthwhile and can lead to enormous costs. As we saw earlier, it's significantly cheaper to purchase a local Austria SIM card once you arrive or, better yet, an eSIM before you travel.

What Are eSIMs, Anyway?

Simply put, eSIMs are regular SIM cards that don't require inserting an actual microchip into your device while providing the same benefits. Newer smartphones (but also smartwatches, tablets, and other devices) can be equipped with eSIMs, and since you don't need an actual SIM card to install an eSIM, you can also get one before your trip to Austria. To do this, all you have to do is visit an online eSIM service, purchase the eSIM you want, and follow the instructions to download and install it onto your device.

Like regular SIM cards, prepaid eSIMs come bundled with a certain fixed amount of data, SMSes, or telephone minutes, which you can use at your leisure while travelling. You get to choose the package you want, and you can generally also extend your eSIM's validity easily right from an app.

Pros of Using an eSIM

In general, eSIMs have numerous advantages and are often a better alternative to regular SIM cards for most tourists. In our opinion, the most significant advantages include:

  • internet immediately upon arrival in Austria,
  • no negotiating with SIM card sellers at the airport,
  • transparent and fair pricing,
  • online extension is often possible,
  • credit card payment is possible,
  • local telecom provider networks are used.

In our opinion, there are only a few reasons against using an eSIM when travelling to Austria (which we'll discuss below). In most instances, we're sure that it's a far better deal than using your normal SIM card from your home country on Austrian networks.

Cons of Using an eSIM

As we've already seen, eSIMs have very few drawbacks and are an excellent option for accessing mobile internet on your Austria vacation.

However, one disadvantage is the slightly higher upfront cost than physical SIM cards. That said, eSIMs are still comparatively cheap, especially for use in Austria from abroad. In our opinion, the significantly higher level of comfort and the possibility of having access to the internet immediately upon arrival are worth the extra pennies. Another disadvantage is related to installation, where the process may be unfamiliar to you if you've never installed an eSIM before. However, if you follow the instructions carefully, you'll be fine.

Finally, there's a compatibility issue: not all devices support eSIMs . If your device was released before late 2019, we recommend double-checking on the internet or contacting a representative from an eSIM service to confirm whether your device is compatible before you purchase an eSIM. In general, the following devices will support eSIMs though:

  • iPhone 11 or later
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or iPhone SE
  • iPad 7th generation or later ,
  • Galaxy S20 or later
  • Google Pixel 3 or later
  • and many other devices (see our full list of compatible devices )

Can I Call From Austria With an eSIM?

white boat

Yes, you can call abroad from Austria with an eSIM , but once again, using your regular network provider and SIM card could result in surprisingly high calling charges at the end of the month (we've personally encountered as high as $4 per minute!). Fortunately, you can call abroad without the high costs, and there are three ways of doing this. We go through each below:

1. Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) With Data

In most cases, eSIM packages are loaded with mobile data, not with minutes or airtime. However, using your data, you can use web-based apps like WhatsApp, Google Meet, Skype, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime and others to stay in touch with family and friends abroad while in Austria.

2. eSIMs With Airtime

Some eSIM services offer talk and text packages alongside normal data packages. These allow you to make direct phone calls or SMSes via local networks in Austria to your home country for only a slightly higher fee than regular data packages. Not all eSIM services offer this service though, but some, like Wraptel , do.

3. International Calling Apps

If you plan to make calls from Austria (or anywhere else abroad) fairly regularly, then your most reliable and affordable option will be to use a third-party app. In our opinion, Rebtel is by far the best service out there , offering low rates and providing you with local Austrian phone numbers with which you can make calls abroad as though they were completely domestic.

Although it's popular, we typically don't recommend using Google Fi for this purpose unless you plan to go back and forth from the United States regularly (since Google Fi is only available to Americans and will not work if you spend over 90 days abroad yearly). In general, Rebtel's rates are more affordable than Google Fi's too. Look at our in-depth review to learn more about our first-hand experience with Google Fi.

Recap: All About eSIMs in Austria

yellow and blue hot air balloon flying over the mountains during daytime

Are you planning a trip to Austria, and do you have a modern smartphone? Then, you should certainly at least consider getting an eSIM. In our opinion, they offer almost nothing but advantages and are generally far superior to using your regular SIM card.

You should compare the available options to find the right provider for eSIMs in Austria. As we've seen, we recommend looking primarily at the network provider and the price. Airalo, Holafly or possibly Yesim are the best choices, depending on how long you want to stay in Austria. To recap, here are what each can offer you:

  • Airalo : Best eSIM for Austria overall,
  • Holafly : Best eSIM for unlimited data in Austria,
  • Yesim : Good alternative to Airalo.
  • Wraptel : Best eSIM for airtime and SMSes.
  • Rebtel : Best calling service for international calls.

Are you traveling to Austria and you want to purchase an eSIM to use in the country? You’re certainly in the right place because this detailed guide will tell you everything about the best eSIM plans for Austria!

At A Glance: Our Favorite eSims for Austria

  • BEST VALUE FOR MONEY Airalo
  • BEST UNLIMITED DATA PLANS Holafly
  • BEST ESIM WITH PHONE NUMBER Orange Holiday Zen eSIM
  • BEST ESIM WITH REGIONAL COVERAGE Ubigi

I’ve included options from both local and international providers and eSIMs with regional coverage in Europe , so there’s something for everyone. Whether you need just a few gigabytes to get you through a short trip or stay in Austria for a while and are interested in renewable monthly plans, you’ll find at least a few suitable options below!

ESIM Product Comparison

Airalo is one of the most popular global eSIM providers thanks to their affordable data plans for most worldwide countries. Their eSIM data plans for Austria start at just $4.5, providing you with access to the 3AT network. Here’s a quick overview of the Airalo Austria eSIM data plans :

  • 1 GB / 7 days for $4.5
  • 3 GB / 30 days for $9.5
  • 5 GB / 30 days for $13
  • 10 GB / 30 days for $21
  • 20 GB / 30 days for $31

Airalo’s eSIMs are data-only and they don’t include a phone number. But it’s worth noting that this is the case with most Austria eSIM plans, and the providers that do include a phone number with an eSim are the minority.

Setting up the Airalo eSIM is very easy thanks to the detailed instructions that are included with the purchase. If you use up all the data, you can easily purchase a top-up that will also extend the validity period of the eSIM through the Airalo app.

  • Great value for money
  • Easy activation and top-ups
  • No phone number

Holafly is an eSIM provider known for offering unlimited data plans for most countries. Austria is no exception; Holafly has unlimited mobile data plans for this European country, that provide you with anywhere from 5 days to 3 months of Internet access. Their Austria eSim plans are:

  • 5 days for $19
  • 10 days for $34
  • 15 days for $47
  • 20 days for $54
  • 30 days for $64
  • 60 days for $84
  • 90 days for $99

You get access to the 3AT network with the Holafly eSIM. Austria has quite a few network providers, and 3AT is considered the third-best option, which isn’t shabby at all.

One big downside of Holafly is that they don’t allow data sharing on any eSIM data plan. You can’t create a hotspot, and the only device that can access the Internet with this eSIM is the device in which the eSim card is installed. What’s the point of having unlimited data if you can’t share it with other devices, let alone people?

  • Unlimited data eSIM plans
  • Easy to activate
  • Data sharing is not allowed

Nomad is another international provider that has quite a few offers for an Austria eSIM. They have eSIM plans for two different network providers, 3AT and Truphone. Truphone is an international network operator and eSIM plans for this provider are more expensive than the 3AT plans, so I would recommend sticking with 3AT, and not just because the eSim plans are cheaper.

You’ll have better coverage if you stick with a local provider, and this is especially important for travelers who plan to explore the more remote and rural regions of Austria. Nomad’s eSIM plans are:

  • 1 GB / 7 days for $7 (Truphone)
  • 1 GB / 7 days for $6 (3AT)
  • 3 GB / 15 days for $12 (3AT/Truphone)
  • 5 GB / 15 days for $14 (3AT/Truphone)
  • 10 GB / 30 days for $19 (3AT)
  • 10 GB / 30 days for $18 (Truphone)
  • 15 GB / 30 days for $27 (3AT)
  • 20 GB / 30 days for $35 (Truphone)
  • 20 GB / 30 days for $33 (3AT)

The good thing about Nomad eSims is that they’re easy to set up and activate, plus it’s super simple to purchase top-ups if you manage to use up all the data you initially purchased. On the other hand, Nomad’s eSim plans are more expensive than Airalo’s, so they’re not really the better option. Especially because both providers give you access to the same network, and neither includes a phone number.

  • Local and international network operator eSIMs
  • A variety of plans to choose from
  • More expensive than Airlao

Orange Holiday Europe eSim

Orange Holiday Europe eSIM is one of a few eSIM plans that include a phone number you can use in Austria. It is a French phone number, but you can use it without any data roaming charges thanks to EU laws. This eSIM is 40 Euros, which is a bit steep, but not a bad deal considering everything that’s included in the plan.

This eSIM includes 120 minutes of free calls to worldwide numbers, as well as 1000 free texts. You get 20 GB of data you can use for the two weeks that the eSIM is valid. If you use up all the data, you can easily purchase more data and extend the validity period of the eSIM.

However, it’s worth noting that you will need to register this sim card and provide your legal ID if you want to keep using it for more than a month. This is required by French law, so consider a different provider if you’re not comfortable doing that.

  • Free texts and minutes for calls
  • Generous data allowance
  • Valid in 30+ countries throughout Europe
  • Registration is necessary after the first month

Orange Holiday Zen eSIM

The Orange Holiday Zen eSIM is a cheaper version of the provider’s Holiday Europe eSIM plan. It also includes a phone number along with free data, and it’s valid for two weeks. This eSIM plan includes 30 minutes of calls to worldwide numbers for free, as well as 200 texts and 8 GB of data, and it costs 20 Euros.

This eSIM is valid in 30+ European countries, so it’s an excellent option if you’re planning to travel to other countries in Europe, in addition to Austria. You will need to register the eSIM if you want to keep using it for more than a month, so keep that in mind. Also, it’s worth noting that you can choose between an eSIM and a physical sim card.

  • Phone number with free minutes/texts
  • Data sharing is allowed
  • Valid in 30+ European countries
  • You must register the eSim to use it for more than a month

O2 Go Card eSIM

The O2 Go Card is another great option for travelers who plan to explore several countries in Europe. This eSIM is valid in all the countries of the European Union, and it includes 10 GB of data that you can use over a month.

This eSIM also gets you free calls on the O2 network, which is one of the largest networks in Europe. It’s possible to purchase an eSim or a physical SIM card, so you can choose whatever option is most convenient for you. Both the physical sim and the eSIM retail for $25.

  • Regional coverage in Europe
  • Phone number included
  • No unlimited data option

Ubigi is an eSIM carrier with excellent regional and global plans. They don’t actually have any individual country plans for Austria, but they do include it in many of their regional eSIM data plans. Ubigi’s plans that offer coverage in Austria range from a $2 daily plan that includes 500 MB, to a $88 plan with 50 GB valid for 30 days.

They have 17 plans that include Austria, and I’ll only tell you about the ones that are good value for money. If you’re staying in the country for a while and you want a decent monthly plan, Ubigi has a renewable $12 plan. It includes 5 GB of data per month and it is valid in USA and Europe.

Another plan worth considering is their renewable $29 plan with coverage in the European Union, the UK, and Switzerland. This plan includes 20 GB of data, and it’s the cheapest 20 GB plan so far.

  • Great regional plans
  • Cheapest 20GB plan
  • No individual data plans for Austria

AIS eSIM2FLY

AIS eSim2Fly is a very popular option with travelers in Asia, but they also have an interesting global plan that offers coverage in 120 worldwide countries. The eSIM includes a Thai phone number and 6 GB of data that are valid for 15 days. The included data allowance is for 4G and 5G networks; when you use up all the high-speed data, you get unlimited 2G data at a speed of 128 kbps.

When you purchase this eSIM, you instantly get a QR code along with instructions on how to set up and activate your eSIM. This eSIM is $33, so it’s not the best value for money in terms of data allowance and validity. But if you’re ever looking for an eSIM that works great in Asia, definitely consider the Asia plan from this provider.

  • Unlimited 2G data
  • A Thai phone number is included
  • Not a great option for Austria

Benefits of Getting an eSIM in Austria

The main benefit of having an eSIM in Austria is that you will always have Internet access at your fingertips, no matter where you are in the country. Sure, the bigger cities have decent free WiFi coverage, especially in cafes and restaurants, but you’re not guaranteed free WiFi when you’re just walking around and exploring. Especially if you’re planning to travel to the more remote regions of the country.

You can check maps if you get lost, you can stay updated on current events and conditions, plus you can share your travels on social media instantly if you want.

The advantage of an eSIM as opposed to a physical Austria sim card is mainly that it’s more convenient. You don’t have to think about sim tray eject tools, or where you’re going to store your existing sim card for safekeeping during the trip. Plus you can purchase it online from the comfort of your home, instead of having to walk around a foreign city looking for a place to buy a sim card.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in Austria

3AT (Hutchison Drei Austria GmbH) is currently the only provider that makes it possible to purchase an eSim with a prepaid plan. You can do it through their up-from-Drei app. They have just one plan, which includes unlimited texts, calls, and data for 30 days. When you buy this plan you can load the eSim profile on your device immediately.

The plan is 20 Euros, so it’s great value for money. It’s a renewable monthly plan, but you can stop paying for it any time, plus you’re not required to sign any contracts. This provider also has several prepaid physical sim cards for tourists, which cost from 10 to 30 Euros.

A1 is Austria’s best and largest network provider, and they’re a great option if you want a local sim card. You can get just a physical sim card from this provider, and they only have one option – the B.free prepaid sim. It’s important to note that you must register this sim card with a government ID, so you’re better off purchasing an international eSIM if this isn’t something you want to do.

Devices Compatible with eSIM in Austria

All devices that are compatible with eSIMs will work with them in Austria. This includes most smartphones released in the last 3-4 years, the latest smartwatches, iPad, and any other device that supports embedded sim technology.

The easiest way to check whether your device supports an eSIM is to dial *#06#. Doing this will bring up a list of unique serial numbers for your phone. An EID serial number indicates that your smartphone supports an eSim, and you’ve got nothing to worry about.

If you can’t see an EID number, your device most likely doesn’t support an eSIM and you’ll have to stick with a physical sim card.

Data Needed When Traveling to Austria

How much data you need for a trip in Austria depends mostly on how long the trip is. A 3-5 GB data pack should be enough for up to two weeks, especially if you don’t plan to watch videos while using mobile data.

On the other hand, if you need mobile data to work or you want to be able to watch as many videos as you want, look into eSIM plans with a data allowance of at least 10 GB. Smaller data packages are fine for people who want to check maps and social media, but video streaming will eat up your data rather quickly, whether it’s TikTok or Netflix.

Do I really need an Austrian SIM card for my trip to Vienna?

First, let's clarify the question of whether you need an Austrian SIM card for your vacation in Vienna:

  • If you are from Europe, it is usually not necessary to buy an Austrian SIM card, as roaming within the EU (and the European Economic Area) has been free since 2017 . This means that in most cases you can use your SIM card in Austria without any problems and without fear of additional costs. However, since each provider is free to impose certain restrictions on overseas use, it is advisable to check your provider's terms and special rules to avoid any surprises.
  • If you are not from Europe but from the USA or other parts of the world, buying an Austrian SIM card makes sense .  Otherwise, you can expect very high international roaming charges. Buying a local SIM card ensures that your mobile data connections are reliable, secure and fast, and allows you to communicate with ease during your trip to Vienna.

Alternatively, tourists can also buy a SIM card at Vienna Airport, although the choice may be more limited and the registration fee may be higher. If immediate use is desired, it's worth getting an eSIM card like Holafly's in advance.

How much does a SIM card cost in Austria?

A normal prepaid SIM card costs around 10 euros in Austria. In addition, there are the tariffs that you have to book as needed. The prices of the respective tariffs vary depending on the data volume, free minutes and whether the tariff is only valid in Austria or Europe-wide. Above you can find the exact prices of the three main mobile operators in Austria.

Holafly eSIM card prices start at around 19 euros for 5 days of unlimited data in Austria + Europe and offer a convenient and easy way for travelers to connect to the internet. Best Tourist Sim Cards in Austria in 2024

austria tourist esim

If you’re planning a trip to Austria, having a reliable means of communication is essential. Whether it’s finding your way around a new city or staying connected with loved ones, having internet access is a game-changer. While roaming is an option, the costs can quickly add up, especially when you’re traveling internationally.

That’s why we recommend either getting an eSIM or a local SIM card to take advantage of local phone rates. Fortunately, obtaining either option in Austria is incredibly simple. This comprehensive guide will provide you with all the information you need to know about purchasing a SIM card in Austria, including the latest pricing and our top recommendation for the best SIM card to buy.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in austria for tourists.

The best sim card in Austria is the B.free prepaid sim card offered by Austria. For just 10 EUR you can get 6GB of data that is valid for 4 weeks within Austria.

All three mobile network operators have good coverage in Austria, however A1 officially has the best network performance and coverage in Austria.

If you require a sim card with EU roaming, you should go for their Simply plan which includes 25GB EU roaming for 18.90 EUR or Magenta Telekom’s prepaid sim card which includes 17GB EU roaming for 15 EUR.

If you prefer convenience, then I recommend Airalo’s Austria eSim over the local sim cards above. For around 12 EUR you will get 5GB of data to use across Austria. This should be plenty for most trips and it saves you needing to visit a store and install a physical sim card -worth it in my opinion.

Austria Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Austria costs 10 EUR in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Austria will cost between $4.50 USD and $31 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Austria which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $13 USD.

How to Get a Sim Card in Austria

Identify mobile providers: A1, Drei (3) and Magenta Telekom (formerly T-Mobile) are your best options in Austria.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Austria

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Austria at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Austria then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Austria have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as A1, Drei (3) and Magenta Telekom (formerly T-Mobile). Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Austria are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Austria with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Austria eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Austria. The Airalo Austria eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $13 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Austria without having to venture outside.

Airalo Austria

Our preferred eSim provider in Austria is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Austria and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Austria eSim uses the 3AT network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the 3AT networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Austria.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Austria eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $4.50 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $9.50 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $13 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $21 USD 20GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $31 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $13 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Austria

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Austria eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Austria eSim uses the Hutchison Drei Austria GmbHnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Austria

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Austria eSim:

Unlimited data valid for 5 days – Price: $19 USD Unlimited data valid for 7 days – Price: $27 USD Unlimited data valid for 10 days – Price: $34 USD Unlimited data valid for 15 days – Price: $47 USD Unlimited data valid for 20 days – Price: $54 USD Unlimited data valid for 30 days – Price: $64 USD Unlimited data valid for 60 days – Price: $84 USD Unlimited data valid for 90 days – Price: $99 USD

What is an eSim?

The eSIM, also known as embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that is permanently fixed inside a device, like a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. Unlike regular SIM cards, it doesn’t require manual insertion or removal.

The eSIM is integrated into the hardware of the device and can be remotely programmed and activated by a mobile network operator. This enables users to effortlessly switch between different mobile networks or plans without the hassle of physically swapping SIM cards.

eSIMs offer convenience, flexibility, and user-friendly operation, especially for individuals who frequently change networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the need to buy and insert physical SIM cards, making it much more convenient to manage multiple mobile connections on a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users can either scan a QR code provided by their network operator or manually enter the activation details. Once activated, the device can connect to the chosen network and access usual voice, data, and messaging services as if it had a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

Using an eSIM can be beneficial for several reasons:

-Convenience: No need to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching networks or plans. Particularly useful for travelers.

-Dual SIM functionality: Allows for two active mobile numbers on one device. Useful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines.

-Space-saving: eSIMs are embedded in the device, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card slot. This frees up space for smaller devices or other components.

-Remote provisioning: Activation and management of mobile plans can be done remotely, without a physical SIM card or store visit. Offers flexibility and convenience.

-Future-proofing: With more networks and providers offering eSIM support, using an eSIM-compatible device ensures access to new services and offerings.

In summary, eSIM technology offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

The Complete Guide to Finding the Best eSIM in Austria

An eSIM , or embedded SIM, is a revolutionary new technology that is changing the way travelers stay connected while abroad. Unlike a physical SIM card that needs to be swapped out to change carriers, an eSIM is a tiny chip embedded directly into a device. This allows you to quickly and easily activate multiple cellular plans and switch between them as needed, making it perfect for international travel. best esim for austria

With an eSIM, you can sign up for a local data plan at your destination before you depart. This avoids roaming charges and ensures you have working cell service as soon as you land. It also means you can easily switch to a new provider if you find a better deal during your trip. eSIMs make connecting straightforward and flexible.

For travelers to Austria, having an eSIM is especially advantageous. It allows you to access maps, translation apps, and travel resources no matter where you are. You can always look up directions, check opening hours, make reservations, stay in touch with your family back home, and share photos without worrying about expensive roaming fees. eSIMs keep you connected and give you peace of mind.

Stay Connected best esim for austria

Staying connected while traveling in Austria is easier than ever with eSIM technology. Here are some tips to make the most of your connectivity:

Purchase an eSIM plan before your trip.  Research providers and find a plan that offers enough data for your needs at a reasonable price. Many providers now allow eSIMs to be purchased online and downloaded to your phone before you depart.

Connect to WiFi whenever possible.  Look for WiFi networks at your accommodation, restaurants, cafes, and other public places. Connecting to WiFi allows you to use apps and browse the web without tapping into your cellular data.

Manage background app data usage.  Go through your phone’s settings and disable background data usage for apps that don’t need Internet connectivity to function offline. This prevents apps from unnecessarily eating up your data allowance.

Use offline maps and guides. Download offline maps of the areas you’ll be visiting in advance via apps like Maps. me or Google Maps. This allows you to navigate without a data connection. You can also download travel guides, phrasebooks, subway maps, and more while on WiFi.

Carry a portable power bank.  Having a charged phone is critical for staying connected. Pack a compact portable charger in your bag so you can recharge on the go when outlets are scarce.

Activate airplane mode when appropriate.  When you don’t need an active connection, like during long flights or train rides, turn on airplane mode to avoid any background data use.

Monitor your usage. Keep an eye on how much data you’ve used during your trip so you don’t get unexpectedly overcharged. Set data usage warnings on your phone, if available.

Staying connected abroad is vital for navigation, information, sharing experiences, and more. With some preparation and smart use of your eSIM and phone settings, you can make the most of your connectivity.

When selecting an eSIM for travel in Austria, it’s important to consider the network coverage of the various providers. Some key factors to evaluate include:

  • Extent of 4G/LTE coverage – Speeds and reliability will depend greatly on access to 4G networks. Research which providers offer the most extensive high-speed coverage.
  • Rural/remote area access – If your travels will take you to small towns or remote areas, check coverage maps to see if your provider maintains a signal in those locations. Some local Austrian providers may offer better rural coverage.
  • Coverage in buildings/underground – Underground metro systems and large buildings can interrupt signal, so check carrier policies on indoor/underground access.
  • International roaming – Most eSIMs allow roaming abroad, but some offer better international coverage than others, which is useful in border regions.
  • Carrier agreements – Some eSIMs use major Austrian carrier networks like A1 while others have limitations. Understand who they roam with internationally.

By evaluating these aspects across different eSIMs, you can determine the provider likely to offer the most extensive and reliable coverage for the specific areas you’ll be visiting in Austria. Choosing an eSIM with strong national and international coverage will help ensure seamless connectivity throughout your travels.

Ease of Use

Activating and using an eSIM in Austria is quick and convenient. Here are some tips:

Download the eSIM app on your phone and register an account. Popular eSIM apps include Airalo, KnowRoaming, GigSky , and others.

Verify your identity by scanning your passport or other ID. This is required by telecom regulations.

Choose an Austrian eSIM data plan and checkout. Plans are available for short-term use, like daily, weekly, or monthly. Long-term plans up to a year are also available.

Activate your Austria eSIM right from the app. Just follow the on-screen prompts. Activation is nearly instantaneous after purchase.

You’ll now have a second SIM profile on your phone in addition to your regular SIM. Toggle between them or use dual SIM mode.

Manage your eSIM plan from the app. You can top-up data anytime or change plans as needed.

Using eSIM data works just like regular roaming data. You’ll connect to local Austrian networks for fast speeds and low latency.

When traveling between European countries, your data roams automatically. Some eSIM providers include roaming in the base rate.

Swapping eSIMs as you travel is easy. Just download profiles to additional devices and toggle service when required.

If you have an eSIM-compatible phone , using an eSIM in Austria is very convenient. The entire process can be done digitally in minutes.

When traveling in Austria, it’s important to understand your carrier’s roaming policies to avoid unexpected charges. Roaming refers to using your cell phone or eSIM on another carrier’s network when outside of your provider’s coverage area.

With an eSIM, roaming works much the same as with a regular SIM card. Your home carrier makes agreements with network providers in Austria to allow you to roam on their networks. However, roaming is usually not included for free with your monthly plan.

Most major carriers charge additional roaming fees when you use data, make calls, or send texts while roaming internationally. For example, you may be charged €5-10 per day to roam, or $1-2 per minute, text, or MB of data used. Excessive roaming charges can add up quickly.

To avoid bill shock, be sure to check with your carrier on exact roaming rates and policies before your trip. Consider purchasing an international roaming package if available. Some options to minimize roaming fees include:

  • Enable Airplane Mode when not actively using your phone
  • Connect to WiFi whenever possible and use apps like WhatsApp, and FaceTime to communicate
  • Disable background data usage and avoid bandwidth-intensive apps
  • Purchase a local Austrian SIM or ESIM for extended stays

With some advance planning, you can stay connected abroad with your eSIM while controlling your roaming expenses. Be proactive in managing data usage and understanding fee structures to make the most of your Austrian vacation.

Buying An Austria SIM Card

Not sure if eSIM is the right thing for you? Or perhaps, your phone doesn’t support eSIM, and you’re looking for an Austria SIM card instead.

There are three leading providers of Austrian SIM cards: Magenta Telekom, A1, and Drei. All three offer 4G/LTE coverage.

You have two options for buying a SIM card in Austria:

  • Buy an expensive SIM card directly at the airport (rates are usually higher at the airport)
  • Buy an affordable SIM card at a local store (recommended)

If you’re looking for the best rates, we recommend buying a SIM card at a local store. That said, remember that you can’t always find SIM stores at the airport. It can depend on your destination.

Final Thoughts On Austria eSIMs

Austria eSIMs are great options for travelers who want to stay connected while in Europe. If you’re looking for the best eSIM for Austria, we recommend Airalo or Nomad. They both offer reliable coverage, and their plans are very affordable.

Comparison of eSIM for a trip to Austria

When comparing different eSIM brands we must take into account all the features that will determine if the card fits the needs of our trip. That’s why we have prepared this table with all the essential information about each brand to help you choose. We’ll delve deeper into each eSIM brand later on so you won’t be missing any of the information.

1. Holafly, eSIM for Austria with Unlimited Data and customer support in English

Holafly is one of the best options for buying eSIM cards as all its plans have unlimited data for all those who want to travel without worrying about running out of internet. In addition, the brand offers a 24/7 customer service in Spanish , English, German, French, Italian and Japanese that responds in less than a minute by chat or WhatsApp, and is currently the company with the best customer rating on Trustpilot with a score of 4.6.

eSIM Austria

On the website of Holafly  you can find 7 unlimited data plans ranging from 19€ to 87€ depending on the duration of the contract, which can be 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 60 days. It is perfect for long stays, as well as for digital nomads or express trips to Austria. On their website you can also find a eSIM card for all of Europe which includes 32 countries so you can move from country to country without having to change eSIMs.

The Holafly eSIM cards can be installed easily by scanning the QR code that you will get by email once you have completed the purchase. The installation can also be done manually without the need for a computer, simply writing a code in the settings of your mobile that you can consult in the mail or in your App, which is very convenient to control the duration of the data plan.

After testing Holafly’s eSIM cards we can say that they are one of the most expensive options on the market, but that in the end they are profitable since all their plans have unlimited data and you will not need to recharge at any time during your trip. Here we leave you this ranking where we evaluate from 1 to 5 all the features of Holafly’s eSIM cards for Austria based on our experience.

In this post you can read about our experience with Holafly eSIM cards and some users’ opinions: Our review of Holafly eSIM: is it worth it?

2. Airalo, the cheapest eSIM brand for traveling to Austria

Airalo is along with Holafly one of the best-known brands in the world to buy an international travel eSIM. This company, founded in Singapore in 2019 by Turkish entrepreneurs Abraham Burak and Ahmet Bahadir Özdemir, was one of the first to offer these services, and has a wide coverage of countries where they offer eSIM cards.

Although Airalo is one of the cheapest brands on the market, the truth is that in the long run it can get expensive as their data plans have very limited gigabytes that can run out at any time, and their technical service takes a long time to respond.

eSIM Austria

Airalo’s eSIM card data plans for Austria are for 7, 15 and 30 days, and prices range from $4.5 to $31. They also offer an eSIM card for Europe that includes 39 countries. The brand has an App through which you can buy and install the eSIM, and later recharge it when you run out of data.

Airalo’s eSIM for Austria offers 5 data plans so you can choose the one that best suits your trip. We compared customer reviews and opinions on Trustpilot and found that Airalo has one of the lowest scores with 3.7. Here is the ranking of each aspect of Airalo and in this post you can also read about our opinion of the brand: Our review of Airalo eSIM: is it worth it?

3. Maya Mobile, 30-day data plans for Austria

This company makes eSIM cards available for 30 days in Austria . In this case, the price of the data packages varies depending on the gigabytes. In total they have 4 packages of 1, 3, 5, 10 gigabytes, and another with unlimited gigabytes. The unlimited data plan is relative as the maximum browsing speed is 5Mbps and after having used 30GB of the plan, it drops to 1Mbps. The price ranges from €5 to €45.

Like Holafly, Maya Mobile is characterized by the speed and simplicity of its hiring and installation process, which is also done through a QR code that arrives in the mail. In addition, they have a 100% refund policy of the purchase in case the data does not work, which is not usual since they have at least two data providers in each country where they offer their services.

eSIM Austria

Maya Mobile also offers a Europe-wide plan that includes 30 countries and has unlimited data (with maximum speed of 5Mbps dropping to 1Mbps).

In the case of Maya Mobile we consider it a disadvantage their plans being very inflexible and only having a duration of 30 days. In Trustpilot you can see that the brand has an average score of 4.4, but there are hardly any comments. Here the table with the score for each of the features of their eSIM cards.

4. Nomad and their eSIM for Austria

Nomad is a company dedicated to the sale of eSIM cards so you can have internet during your travels . Its main feature is that in addition to its website, it has an App with which its customers can hire data plans easily and quickly. It is also a marketplace like SimOptions, but the web is more intuitive and easy to use.

eSIM Austria

The brand offers data plans in more than 100 countries and also by continent so we can make use of our Internet connection even if we are moving between different countries. In the case of Austria, the data packages have durations of 7, 15 or 30 days , which is quite flexible. In addition, they have data limits ranging from 1GB to 20GB . The fact that they don’t have unlimited data plans is a big disadvantage as we will be forced to recharge.

The Nomad App is very useful to monitor the consumption and recharge in case we run out of data. We can also use it to get in touch with customer service, which unfortunately is only in English.

5. SimOptions and their marketplace

SimOptions is an eSIM card marketplace where local mobile carriers in each country sell their eSIM cards. The brand, with offices in Paris, Thailand and Hong Kong, offers data plans for eSIM cards in more than 160 countries and also have regional and global plans.

eSIM Austria

For Austria you will find 6 data plans of 7, 14, 15 and 30 days with data limits of 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, 8GB, 10GB and 20GB. Prices are a bit higher than average and range from $7.9 to $49.9. Most plans do not allow you to top up the installed eSIM if you run out of data and just three include calls.

The main drawback of Sim Options, besides being an expensive brand, is that its website is a bit chaotic and the data plans, as they are from different brands , are very disparate and their features vary a lot, not only price, speed or duration, but also technical support, the possibility of recharging or data sharing. This will force you to look in detail at each brand and will make it harder for you to make a decision.

Our personal experience is that with SimOptions cards you lose a lot of time comparing between one and the other. In addition, the price is high, you can only pay in dollars and they don’t give you the guarantee of a good technical support. Here we rate SimOptions eSIM cards from 1 to 5 and in this post you can read about our opinion and what other customers think about the brand: Our review of Sim Options eSIM: is it worth it?

Conclusion: what is the best eSIM for Austria

In this post we have seen that there are many important factors to take into account when comparing eSIM cards since, for each type of travel you will have different connection needs. That is why we have prepared this section where we tell you based on our experience which eSIM card is best for Austria.

When we travel we don’t want to run out of data in the middle of our vacation, that’s why eSIM cards with unlimited data are the best option . In this case, the only brands offering unlimited eSIM data are Holafly and Maya Mobile, but remember that Maya Mobile’s unlimited data plans are not real, as after using 30GB the browsing speed will drop to half. With some companies like Airalo or Nomad you can recharge the eSIM already installed through their website or App, but the best thing is not having to pay again if you run out of data. In the case of Simoptions not all of their eSIM brands allow recharging.

We know it can be tricky to calculate the gigabytes you will need during your trip, so we have prepared this table to help you estimate if you end up choosing an eSIM card with a data limit, which we do not recommend.

The installation process of eSIM cards is always simple and fast , but it is true that there are some companies that make it even easier. The first thing is to check if your mobile is compatible with the eSIM of the brand. You can check this information on the website of each provider.

The purchase of the eSIM for Austria can be done through the web in the case of some brands such as Holafly or SimOptions , or through the app such as Nomad or Airalo. Holafly’s website is very intuitive and easy to use, while Simoptions’ is quite complicated to understand and you will have to read a lot.

The only brands that allow you to do the installation through the App are Airalo and Nomad , and in the case of Holafly, from the App you will be able to get the code to install the eSIM manually without using a computer. You can also do the installation by scanning a QR code that you will receive by email as soon as you have completed the purchase with Holafly, Airalo, Simoptions or Maya Mobile.

instant data plan abroad with holafly

On the other hand, it is very important to consider the technical service to help you in the installation process and solve any doubt or problem. Most brands such as Maya Mobile or Airalo have a chat bot that takes a long time to respond and only does so in English. In the case of SimOptions, technical support will depend on the brand of eSIM card you have chosen. In this aspect Holafly’s technical support is the best as it responds in less than 1 minute in Spanish, English, German, French, Italian and Japanese through the web chat or by WhatsApp, where a conversation is opened automatically after the purchase.

Internet abroad with Holafly

Many times when we travel we want to share data with other devices and only some providers like Airalo and some SimOptions brands make it possible.

But one of the most important aspects is price. The cheapest brands are Airalo and Maya Mobile , however, their data plans are very limited and you’re likely to run out and have to pay again with the top-up. That’s why it’s sometimes advisable to pay a little more and get a eSIM card with unlimited data like Holafly to give you peace of mind and avoid having to recharge again.

All in all, Holafly eSIM cards are the best choice for travel to Austria for their unlimited data and multilingual technical support that responds in less than a minute. With Holafly you’ll never run out of data on your trip.

Other options for having internet in Austria?

There are several ways to get internet when traveling abroad, however, eSIM cards are our favorite option because of the number of advantages they offer which we are about to detail.

There are other alternatives to connect to internet in Austria that may also interest you. That’s why we have prepared this list with other options, their prices, advantages and disadvantages for you to compare and choose the one that best suits your trip.

1. Buy Magenta and Telekom SIM-cards in Austria

This was the most common option until eSIM cards came along. When you arrive in Austria you can get your SIM card at the airport or in the shopping areas of the cities. There you will find stores of the main telephone companies such as Magenta and Telekom .

The price of the eSIM will depend on the duration of the contract and the gigabytes contracted, but to give you an idea, prices are around 25€ for one month.

Although this is one of the most widespread methods to have internet, the truth is that it has several disadvantages as detailed in this table.

Internet abroad with Holafly

2. Rent a Pocket WiFi for Austria

A Pocket WiFi is a wireless router that allows us to connect to the internet from any location. These are the advantages and disadvantages that this system, considered one of the most expensive ones, has.

Some of the best brands for renting Pockets Wifi in Austria are TravelersWifi and Mywebspot. The plans are contracted by the day or by the month depending on the company. With TravelersWifi for example, a day costs almost €5.9. To these costs, however, must be added shipping costs, insurance, extra batteries or car chargers.

This system for a short trip can be uneconomical. This is why it is usually recommended for longer stays or business trips where the device will always be kept in one place and can be shared among several people.

3. Search for free WiFi networks in Austria

In Austria you can find free wifi hotspots in places like department stores, cafes, museums and hotels. However, the big disadvantage of public networks is their vulnerability to hacking. That is why it is recommended to limit their use to a minimum and avoid at all costs making transactions where your personal data is put at risk.

4. Activate roaming for Austria

Data roaming is a service offered by phone companies to continue using your local data plan when traveling to Austria. The cost of this service is usually high, so it is advisable to check with your usual carrier before embarking on your trip, to avoid surprises at the end of the month.

However, inhabitants of countries within the European Union can continue to use the data contracted in their country at no additional cost.

Frequently asked questions about how to have internet in Austria

ESIM cards allow you to have internet on your mobile when traveling abroad without having to remove your regular SIM as is the case with SIM cards. This is possible thanks to a chip incorporated in the latest generation of cell phones. The purchase of the eSIM data plan can be done through the web or the App of some brands. Choose your destination, duration and gigabytes of data plan and pay securely.

The eSIM installation and activation is a really easy procedure that will take you just a few minutes. Once you have verified that your cell phone is compatible with the product and chosen the data plan that best suits your needs, go to the mobile data settings on your smartphone and select “add data plan”. Then the camera will open so you can scan the QR code that you will have received in the mail after the purchase. Then the installation and activation of your card will begin. This process must be carried out with internet connection, so it is recommended to do it before embarking on the trip or upon arrival at the hotel.

Most models of common brands such as Apple, Samsung, Motorola, Huawei or Google are compatible as long as they are recent models. Several iPads are also supported. However, it is best to check on the website of each provider, where they will tell you all the compatible models.

SIM cards can be purchased in physical stores or online, whose delivery period ranges from 48 to 72 hours. There are also companies that offer same-day express shipping.

Most companies offer data capped packages. Holafly , unlike the rest offers a wide variety of unlimited data packages.

To activate the eSIM card you need to have internet connection, so it is recommended to activate it just before embarking on your trip.

Data packages usually last between 7 and 30 days, however, there are providers such as Holafly that offer more flexible packages between 5 days and 2 months.

Unlimited data plans usually do not allow data sharing, but those plans with a specific number of GBs included do.

Data on unlimited plans is really unlimited. Note in any case that local mobile operators may temporarily reduce the speed if you make very intensive use of applications such as Netflix or Youtube. These limits are more intended to avoid network saturation by a few users.

Holafly is a Spanish company launched in 2018 that you can trust, it has been tested by more than 400,000 customers, travel blogs and Youtubers. Holafly markets eSIMs since 2019.

Holafly has over 10,000 positive experiences posted on Trustpilot, with a rating of “Excellent” and 4.6 average score.

SIM Options has positive and negative reviews, and an average rating on Trustpilot lower than Holafly, at 3.8. SIM Options is a Hong Kong-based company.

Maya is owned by a US company, Maya Virtual Inc. Maya’s reviews on Truspilot are good, out of 4.5 average rating.

The reviews of Airalo on Truspilot are good, out of 3.9 average rating.

What people talk about us

The most daring travelers have already tried austria-esim.com. Will you?

Jamie Nichols testimonial

I recently used the eSIM from austria-esim.com for my trip to Austria, and I must say I’m impressed with their service. Immediately following the transaction completion I received the information I needed to install the eSIM remotely, something that was aided by the copious documentation that was provided in my language (English). The eSIM was successfully installed on my iPhone 11 and I think I am good to go.

Karl Bedrich testimonial

I highly recommend the unlimited plan for 15 days from austria-esim.com to anyone looking for an easy and affordable way to stay connected while traveling in Austria. While I did encounter some difficulties installing the esim, the team was quick to respond and helped me resolve the issue in a timely and professional manner. The esim itself was fast and reasonably priced.

Marcin testimonial Trustpilot

It worked straight away after data plan activation as per instruction. 10GB for $12 for 15 days is amazing. And best thing is eSIM which is used for data only and if needed still someone can call your primary/home number. I couldn’t be happier with the service. I will recommend this to anyone who is about to travel to Vietnam, Austria, and other southeastern Asia.

Leon Sutherland

Bought eSIM a couple of days in advance of entering Austria. Activated at the border by sending text as per instructions. Immediately up and running with speedy internet usage. Had to make change to APN’s to facilitate personal hotspot usage but again followed simple instructions provided and works perfectly. All in all a great experience from a well priced package.

Holafly eSIM User Reviews

Trustpilot

DON’T stress about your phone service when you travel abroad! I used Holafly to travel home to California this year. The instructions were super easy to follow and I had no problems with the service for the whole 20 days that I used it. It was nice not to worry about how much my phone company was going to charge me for service abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Austria eSIM

When does my data plan start?

Your data plan starts the moment you activate your eSIM, by turning on data roaming in the Holafly eSIM. You should do this once you arrive at your destination.

Can I make phone calls and send messages with my Holafly eSIM?

The Austria eSIM only comes with cellular data. It does not include a local phone number for phone calls or text messages. You can still make calls using apps like WhatsApp.

Which devices work with the eSIM card?

You can check if your smartphone is eSIM compatible here.

When will I receive my eSIM?

Once you purchase an eSIM, you will receive it immediately to your email address. You then just need to scan the QR code to activate the SIM. Note that no refunds can be made once you purchase your digital SIM. See our refund policy for more information.

Can I keep my WhatsApp number?

You don’t need to do anything to keep your WhatsApp number. You’ll automatically keep your number, contacts and conversations.

How quick is the Holafly eSIM?

The Holafly eSIM offers maximum speed coverage (3G4GLTE). But bear in mind that in some areas of limited coverage there may be a lower speed connection.

Do I have to activate data roaming on my device?

Yes. To ensure that your eSIM gets the best coverage, you must turn on data roaming on your phone’s settings. This will not incur any additional charges, as long as you have already the Holafly eSIM set up correctly.

What do I do if I delete or lose my eSIM’s QR code?

If you cannot find the code, please contact our 24/7 customer support team at [email protected] or our online chat function. We will resend the code to your email.

What happens if I use up my data or my days of validity?

If you use all your data or run out of days, your eSIM card will no longer work and you will lose internet connection.

What eSIM data plan should I choose for Austria?

You can choose 5 days of unlimited data, 7 days of unlimited data, 10 days of unlimited data, 15 days of unlimited data, 20 days of unlimited data, 30 days of unlimited data, 60 days of unlimited data and 90 days of unlimited data. You can contact us at any time if you’re not sure which plan is best for you.

Could the internet speed with my Holafly eSIM be reduced?

This prepaid eSIM data plan includes unlimited data for the corresponding valid days. However, please note that the operator may reserve the right to apply a Fair Usage Policy, as it applies to all other network users. In particular, if the operator estimates the usage of more than 90GB of data in a month, they may temporarily reduce the speed to between 256-1024KB to avoid affecting other users. This limitation is intended to prevent network saturation and will be removed within 24 hours. If you think the local carrier has limited your speed, please get in touch with us by chat, and we will check if there is any incidence and how to restore your rate to the maximum speed permitted by the network.

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

Yes, you can do so by logging into your customer panel on the Holafly website. You will find the data plans you can purchase there. Once you’ve made your purchase, it will be activated immediately on the eSIM you have linked.

Can I share data with other devices?

Certainly! With the Austria eSIM, you have the capability to share up to 500MB of data per day across devices by creating a WiFi connection using your smartphone. Refer to your device instructions for guidance on setting up a WiFi connection via a mobile hotspot.

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

After your purchase, we will send a QR code and manual instructions to your email. Either print the QR code or open it on your computer. On your cellphone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan and scan the QR code. You can rename the data plan on your phone. Then, you’ll be able to switch between your Holafly data plan and the original plan from your provider. The Holafly data plan will only be operational once you arrive at your destination. Once you land, turn on data roaming on your cellphone’s settings and activate the Holafly data plan. Check your phone’s user manual for more details on adding a data plan. All eSIM products come with comprehensive set-up instructions.

When should I set up my eSIM?

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan, and turn on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code and take it with you on your vacation just in case. Remember that you need a prior internet connection to activate the eSIM. Set up is quick and you will be able to enjoy your data plan right away.

How can I check my data balance?

You can manage your eSIMs and access all purchased data plans by logging into your Holafly Center through the Holafly website.

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

Your eSIM can only be activated on one device. If you delete the virtual SIM from your device, you will not be able to reuse it. You cannot scan the QR code on two devices.

Can I delete the Holafly eSIM once I’ve used my data?

Yes! But keep in mind that you don’t need to do so. As soon as your plan expires your eSIM will no longer work.

Can I use my SIM card and Holafly eSIM at the same time?

If you are using an Apple device, you can use your SIM card and your eSIM at the same time. Choose the SIM card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. Please remember that if you leave your SIM card activated, your network provider may apply data roaming charges to receive or make phone calls as well as send SMS.

How do I get a refund?

At Holafly we are aware that our users may have unforeseen events after making the purchase. Therefore, you can request a refund in the following circumstances: – You bought the eSIM without checking the compatibility with your cellphone. – You canceled your trip or you no longer need the eSIM. – Our eSIMs generally work fine, but if you experience connection issues, we can provide you with a full or partial refund. Once the refund is approved, you will receive the money on to the same account with which you made the payment. This process can take between 5 to 10 business days. For more details, terms and conditions, we invite you to read our Refund Policy .

To which mobile network will I connect at my destination?
