Jan Loos, from Oosterbeek talks to visitors about the second world war at the town's Airborne Museum. Netherlands.

Oosterbeek echoes to the battle of Arnhem: my tour guide’s vivid war memories

A memorable meeting with 90-year-old local Jan Loos on the Liberation Route walking trail

A t a crossroads on the outskirts of the Dutch village of Oosterbeek is a grand cafe that first opened in 1894, where cups of coffee are served alongside schnitzel and meatballs. First impressions suggest it is a typical Dutch bistro, but Restaurant Schoonoord’s brown-brick frontage hides another story. During the last vestiges of the second world war, the building was set up as an emergency field hospital by the British 1st Airborne Division.

Last summer, I was map-reading at the same spot on the Utrechtseweg-Stationsweg intersection, unaware that a 90-year-old Dutchman was about to transform my day. A blurry blue sky was hanging over the village and I saw him out of the corner of my eye, striding towards me.

“You look lost,” he said, extending a hand and introducing himself as Jan Loos, a retired navy pilot officer. “Let’s get lunch and I’ll show you my home town.”

The war was the reason I was in the Netherlands. In an attempt to make the history more tangible and to better understand the human sacrifice, I had been walking a section of the Liberation Route , a 3,000km (1,865 mile) remembrance trail from London to Berlin, which ties together the storylines of the western allied forces’ advance during the climax of the second world war.

Airborne Regiment flags hanging on houses in Oosterbeek for the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem in 2014.

In September 1944, the provinces of Gelderland and North Brabant on the Dutch-German border became the main stage for the fighting in western Europe, and of all the battlefields and remembrance sites to visit along this pathway, the 12-mile stretch between Nijmegen and Arnhem is arguably the richest in historical drama. Here was the frontline on the road to Berlin. Here was the setting for Operation Market Garden, the largest airborne operation in history. Here, too, is where the trail’s origins lie.

And that was where Jan Loos came in. For years, this volunteer at Oosterbeek’s Airborne Museum at Hartenstein has been mapping the stories of the traumatised civilians and lost soldiers of his unassuming home town, around three miles west of Arnhem. The nonagenarian told me he would share his story and show me the places that changed his life for ever. In exchange, I did what I could: paid for his lunch and a glass of beer.

The renovated Airborne Museum, Oosterbeek, in May 2020.

Inside the cafe, Jan related his story. At 14, he witnessed the atrocities when Oosterbeek became an ill-fated focal point of Operation Market Garden. In September 1944, the Nazis had 1,100 guns and mortars set up around his village and they fired constantly, trapping his family – who remained hidden in the basement of their house – without food or water. He was numb from the noise and told me he has never been able to forget the screaming, and sounds and smells of mortar fire.

“When we finally managed to come out days later, there was no part of our house left standing,” he said. “We looked straight up into thin air.”

An exhibit – a car amid rubble – in the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek.

Another image from that day is imprinted in Jan’s mind: an empty birdcage, spotted among the debris. With that image lingering, he finished his story, remembering how his family stepped into the line of fire and walked down their street with artillery shells whooshing over their heads.

“Oosterbeek had become a ghost town,” he said. “There was dirt, burning vehicles and broken houses. Bodies everywhere.”

Shocked by the visceral account, I had stopped breathing.

Half an hour later, we set out together on a pathway through the parkland and forest to the south. By Jan’s design, we followed the same route taken by the allies during Operation Berlin, when 2,400 soldiers were evacuated across the Lower Rhine in September 1944. Led by Major-General Roy Urquhart, the commander of the disastrous “A Bridge Too Far” offensive, the beleaguered troops made their escape at night-time. We had the warmth of the sun on our backs. Where the forest was at its thickest, Jan said, remains of missing soldiers are still found.

Jan Loos dancing with Vera Lynn at a charity ball in Amsterdam

From the treeline to the river, he told me about his decision to join the Royal Netherlands Navy, a career that lasted until his retirement in the 1980s; introduced me to the story of Kate ter Horst, the “Angel of Arnhem”, who tended wounded British soldiers in the refectory of the village’s Oude Kerk, which we passed along the way; and rescued a runaway toddler who’d somehow escaped down the forest path in the wrong direction from his mother.

Lurking ahead, at the foot of a wide field, lay the banks of the Lower Rhine, still but for a single boat puttering between the embankments. If anyone had looked across from the other side, they would have seen an unorthodox couple, together but apart, sharing the common language of silence and respect. Where we were standing, 95 soldiers had been gunned down into the water. Now, there was just us, the Rhine and the inescapable echo of memory.

Rather than dwell on the moment, Jan whipped out his smartphone to show a black-and-white photo of himself, years later and dancing at a Royal Air Forces Association charity ball in Amsterdam. On his arm was Dame Vera Lynn.

And then, my new friend left me to continue on my way. Ahead was Arnhem, the notorious John Frost Bridge and the German border, but before me also lay a slightly different path. For I was no longer just a curious hiker, but a bearer of Jan’s story, able to pass it on and share it on a journey of my own.

Tour introduction.

This ‘Soldiers' Experience’ tour follows the Market Garden Corridor - 'Hell's Highway' to Arnhem and describes what it was like to experience a German tank ambush on the road to Eindhoven at Valkensvaard, and the American parachute coup de main parachute assault on the Grave Bridge. The brutal fight for the massive road bridge across the Waal at Nijmegen is brought to life from the perspective of the SS defenders of the Nijmegen citadel. Hear of the nail-biting river crossing by American paratroopers, under intense fire, with only plywood and canvas boats. Sgt Robinson's daring Sherman tank rush at the bridge, despite its obvious preparation for demolition, is described from the perspective of both sides. Finally we hear the heroic story of British Paratroopers at Arnhem and learn why it became a ‘bridge too far'.

Airborne soldier-historian Robert Kershaw is the leading UK authority for the battle of Arnhem and internationally recognised as an expert for his books and research on D-Day, the Market Garden battles and the German Army in World War II. Bob is one of our most popular expert historians.

In August 1944 Paris was liberated, symbolising a significant milestone in ending the war. However there was no time to rest on laurels and the allies planned another huge airborne offensive into the heart of Holland. The ultimate aim was to secure bridges over the Meuse and Ruhr rivers which would allow armour to cross into the territory in preparation for the advance deep into Germany itself. The advance hit a wall at Arnhem which meant the Ruhr couldn’t be secured and ended any hopes of finishing the war by Christmas.

The Battle of Arnhem Tour and the Oosterbeek Memorial

The 17th September 1944 saw the beginning of the largest airborne operation in the history of warfare. This was the beginning of Operation Market Garden, Field Marshall Montgomery’s ambitious plan to break into Germany and end the war by Christmas. As part of this operation over 10,600 British troops of the 1st Airborne Division landed around the town of Oosterbeek by parachute and glider. The overall plan ultimately failed, but the men fought tenaciously against German armoured forces to hold the ground that they had taken and the bridge at Arnhem. On 25 September 2071 survivors were evacuated across the Rhine. We follow the story of this operation on our Battle of Arnhem tour .

We visit a number of the sites at which key events took place, such as the bridges at Grave, Nijmegan and Arnhem. We also visit the moving Oosterbeek cemetery where many of the British Airborne troops who died are buried. One of the most striking memorials which we visit is also at Oosterbeek.

Oosterbeek Airborne Memorial on The Battle of Arnhem Tour

The Oosterbeek Airborne Memorial

A Panel from the Oosterbeek Airborne Memorial visited on The Battle of Arnhem Tour

A Panel from the Oosterbeek Airborne Memorial

The airborne memorial at Oosterbeek was erected by local residents to thank and honour the airborne troops who gave their lives in the liberation of Holland. The memorial is surmounted by the figure of liberty. She is surrounded by the figures of civilians and soldiers supporting the other values which are being fought for, Belief, Justice, Home, Hope and Love.

Some of most moving images are on the lower panels of the memorial. One panel depicts soldiers descending by parachute laden with kit and carrying weapons in their hands. Below them other troops are landing by glider. Another panel shows local women caring for the wounded. A woman carries a soldier who has lost his leg.

The airborne memorial at Oosterbeek stands opposite the Hartenstein Airborne Museum. This excellent museum recreates the story of the Arnhem operation and effectively captures the atmosphere of events through its wide range of exhibits, including artefacts, recreated scenes from the local area, film and the personal accounts of soldiers and civilians.

The perimeter was a horseshoe shaped defense line around Oosterbeek in which the Britsh and Polish troops retreated during the Battle of Arnhem. In this area, the Allies withstood the German forces’ attacks for nine days. The perimeter route passes locations of fierce battles, heroic actions, old farmhouses, former emergency hospitals and testimonies of the war that are still visible in the landscape today.

Operation Market Garden was an Allied offensive, from September 17th until September 26th 1944, during the Second World War. Aerial troops had to capture and hold different bridges over rivers and canals in The Netherlands before they would be supported by ground troops. One of the targets was the Rijnbrug in Arnhem. The German resistance around Arnhem appeared to be much heavier than was expected and it was one of the reasons why the almost 12,000 British and Polish troops couldn’t conquer the bridge.

On the 20th of September, Allied troops had to retreat to Oosterbeek. In this village, the perimeter was formed: a horseshoe shaped defense line in and around the village, close to the river Rhine. In the following days, heavy fighting took place within the perimeter. It was difficult to supply the troops in the perimeter and therefore the soldiers faced a severe deficiency in food, medical supplies and ammunition. Lots of soldiers were wounded or had been killed in the ongoing battles. On September 25th, the supplies had run out completely and it became clear that the ground troops could not reach them on time anymore. The remaining troops had to retreat by crossing the river Rhine. 2,400 soldiers reached the safe area at the other side of the river, leaving the wounded and medical staff behind. 6,500 British and Polish troops were captured and taken as prisoners of war. About 1,900 men died.

The inhabitants of Oosterbeek had to hide in the cellars during these days in order to avoid the danger, but here too casualties were inevitable. After the battles, Oosterbeek was destroyed and the inhabitants had to be evacuated.

To ensure the success of Operation Market Garden, the allies had to take the bridge of Arnhem. But the lightly armed airborne troops were no match for the two SS Panzer Divisions present in the area.. After desperate fighting and many deaths, the Arnhem bridge turned out to be EE a bridge too far.

De slag om Arnhem The Battle of Arnhem was part of the much larger operation codenamed “Market Garden”. Tijdens deze operatie moesten drie Airborne divisies vanaf de Belgische grens bij Lommel tot Arnhem de bruggen over de diverse waterwegen veroveren waarna het 30e Britse Corps naar Midden-Nederland kon oprukken. Part of the 2nd battalion of paratroopers of the 1st British Airborne Division reached the Rhine Bridge in Arnhem and held out there for four days.

battlefield tour oosterbeek

After three days of fighting, the airborne soldiers withdrew towards Oosterbeek. This is the last defensive stronghold of the British and Polish soldiers during the Battle of Arnhem. The area that is surrounded by the Germans around Oosterbeek is what the British call the 'perimeter'.. The territory so stubbornly defended by the Airbornes, then has the shape of an elongated horseshoe. The open part of this horseshoe is formed by the Oosterbeek floodplain in which the Oude Kerk is also located, with the Rhine to the south. After nine days of heavy fighting, the Airbornes evacuate the perimeter and retreat across the Rhine. From the hold 12.000 British and Poles only reached a small 2.300 soldiers across the Rhine. Arnhem turned out to be a bridge too far.

On Sunday morning 16 October 2022 organizes Battlefield Tours in the context of the 78th commemoration of the Battle of Arnhem in Market Garden in september 1944 a battlefield tour through the southern perimeter of Oosterbeek.

Day 1 Arrive in Arnhem – check into hotel followed by a walking tour of Arnhem to the John Frost Bridge and the Eusebius Church and The Battle of Arnhem Information Centre.

Day 2 Today our route takes us to the major landmarks of the Battle of Arnhem. We start by cycling along the River Rhine to Driel, where Polish paratroopers landed and where the surviving troops were evacuated on the night of 26 September 1944.

From here we cross the river by ferry to Doorwerth Castle. We then visit the landing sites at Ginkels Heath Heelsumand before cycling on to the village of Wolfheze, returning to Arnhem via the famous St Elizabeth’s Hospital.

Cycle Arnhem

Day 3 Today our focus is on the fighting in and around Oosterbeek. We will visit the Airborne Cemetery and Airborne Museum ‘Hartenstein’. From here we will follow more or less the same route John Frost and his men took into Arnhem. Our visit today includes a detour to the fascinating glider museum at Wolfheze.

Day 4 On Day 4 our route takes us along the banks of the River Waal to the German border and the head of the Rhine Delta. Highlight of the route is the oldest town of Holland, Nijmegen, which played a crucial role in WWII.

From the cycle bridge over the River Waal, you get lovely views over Nijmegen. From Nijmegen we will cycle through wooded countryside to the landing zones for the 82nd Airborne Division. We will also visit the National Liberation Museum at Groesbeek and call in at Hoge Hof Farm – the starting point for the offensive into Germany in February 1945.

Cycle Arnhem

Day 5 Check out of hotel and return by train to Amsterdam.

Opportunity for some free time in Amsterdam before returning to UK.

Accommodation

You will stay in comfortable 3 and 4-star hotels. This holiday is sold on a bed and breakfast basis. In Arnhem we typically stay in the 4 star Hotel Haarhuis, a stones throw from the main railway station

Travel Arrangements

By far the easiest route is to fly from the UK to Amsterdam Schipol. From here there is a regular train service to Arnhem which takes about an hour. An alternative is by train from St Pancras International Station to Amsterdam Central Station. Again, there is a direct train service to Arnhem from here.

Please note that for all cycling tours you are required to bring your own equipment such as helmets etc. Bikes are included in the tour price.

Arnhem – Highlights (4 Hours) – Battlefield Tour

Arnhem – Highlights (4 Hours) – Battlefield Tour

In this half day (4 hour) battlefield tour, we will visit the most important locations of the battle for Arnhem and Oosterbeek during Operation Market Garden.

This tour will start at the landing zones for an introduction and overview. Then we will follow the men of the Recce Squadron and their ill-fated mission to capture the bridge with their Jeeps, this includes a stop at the tunnel under the railway embankment near Wolfheze.

Our next stop will be the Westerbouwing heights, a hill overlooking and dominating the Rhine River. The loss of this hill and nearby ferry site made reinforcing the defensive perimeter almost impossible which lead to the eventual evacuation and the end of the operation. That will be discussed at our next stop, the Church near the Rhine.

We will then pay our respects at the Oosterbeek war cemetery where we will walk among the graves and remember their sacrifice.

Our final stop of the day is at the John Frost road bridge in Arnhem where we will discuss the heroic defense and famous last stand of the 2nd Battalion. This small force held on to the bridge for three days and four nights.

Usually starts at 13:00h / 1pm

Transportation is included. Coffee, tea, lunch and museum entrance is not included in the price.

My name is Joris Nieuwint and I will be your tour guide! Please allow me to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about what I've been doing over the past years. For the past 10 years I've been living in Veghel, and before that, I've lived in Arnhem for almost two decades. Living so close to the battlefields meant that Operation Market Garden always had my interest and I've been studying the battles for all those years. Sharing what I've learned over the years has been my passion and becoming a tour guide was one of my dreams. Keeping the sacrifices of these men alive by telling their stories and showing the locations where it happened is my greatest passion.

The Battle Over Classic Rock Band the Guess Who Just Went Nuclear

By Ethan Millman

Ethan Millman

For the past six months, Burton Cummings, founding singer and songwriter of classic rock group the Guess Who , has been in a bitter legal dispute to wrest control of his old band’s legacy. Now, he’s adopting an aggressive and relatively unheard of approach to make that happen: giving up on certain royalties so the band can’t play his songs.

As Rolling Stone previously reported , Cummings and original Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman sued the current iteration of the Guess Who (as well as the band’s original drummer and bass player Garry Peterson and Jim Kale) last October, alleging that the group that currently holds the Guess Who trademark is “a cover band” using the original group’s recording in ads “in an effort to boost the Cover Band’s ticket sales for live performances and to give the false impression that Plaintiffs are performing.”

“I’m willing to do anything to stop the fake band; they’re taking [Bachman and my] life story and pretending it’s theirs,” Cummings tells Rolling Stone. “They’re not the people who made these records and they shouldn’t act like they did. This doesn’t stop this cover band from playing their shows, it just stops them from playing the songs I wrote. If the songs are performed by the fake Guess Who, they will be sued for every occurrence.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

“Not a lot of artists are both the writer and the publisher on their songs, and Burton Cummings fortunately is, so this is a very rare case where the artist can take this action,” Yu says. “And I think this situation shows the direct nexus between their false advertising and who they say they are.”

The move is focused on agreements set through groups called performing rights organizations (PROs). The termination targets all the venues the band would play. Almost every concert venue in the country has blanket agreements with various PROs such as BMI and ASCAP, who collect royalties on behalf of songwriters for the public performances of their works. If a venue has licensing agreements in place, the venues’ artists are free to cover any song from the PROs’ repertory.

By Thursday morning, the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville, the Saenger Theatre in Mobile, Alabama, and the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach, Florida — who would’ve hosted the Guess Who’s next three shows — announced cancellations as well. Tickets for shows beyond those dates remain on sale as of this article’s publication.

An attorney for the Guess Who didn’t respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment regarding the shows. In December, the band took to social media calling Cummings and Bachmans’ suit “meritless.” In a memorandum, the band argued that “there is no dispute that Defendants lawfully own ‘The Guess Who’ trademark,” and that Consumers who see an ad for a concert by the Guess Who would not reasonably assume that Bachman and Cummings are performing merely because they were in the band many years ago.”

Assuming the group does play the classic era songs at their upcoming shows, both the band and the venue they played at could be on the hook for legal recourse, Cummings and his team tell Rolling Stone .

But like most nuclear options, Cummings’ strategy doesn’t come without the risk of some mutually assured destruction. While terminating the rights complicates the current Guess Who’s performances, it may also significantly hit Cummings’ own earnings. Aside from working with concert venues, PROs also collect royalties from when songs are played on the radio, on TV shows, or even when they’re played in the background at restaurants or shopping malls. With the license terminated, Cummings will likely lose out on seeing those royalty payments. And that’s not just on the versions he recorded, but on covers such as Lenny Kravitz’s Grammy-winning “American Woman” cover.

The termination is the latest development in a decades-long dispute that bubbled over with last year’s lawsuit . The fight began when the band’s original bassist Jim Kale obtained the trademark to the Guess Who name in 1986 as the band hadn’t secured the trademark before then . From then on, Kale had organized several tours using the Guess Who name featuring a heavily rotating lineup.

By the late 1980s, the Guess Who’s original drummer Garry Peterson joined the band as well. Kale retired in 2016, leaving Peterson as the only original member left. But he doesn’t play every show, Bachman and Cummings alleged, meaning some shows feature no original members of their band.

Since Cummings filed the suit, he says that the band had removed his access to the Guess Who’s Spotify For Artists page. (When the suit filed last fall, the band’s Spotify page showed a picture of the current Guess Who lineup, but as of publication, it’s now a picture of the old band.)

Cummings also tells Rolling Stone that within the past month, the band’s lawyers said they’d “sue me if I ever even say I was ever in the Guess Who.” “You know how ridiculous this is? What next, can I not say I was born and raised in Winnipeg? That I’m Canadian?”

“How much is my life’s work worth? You can’t put it in dollars and cents,” he says. “It’s wrong what they’ve done and for years, nobody did anything about it. But we’re doing something now, and this may set some precedents because there are other acts out there that aren’t real either.
