Kellee Edwards' Journey To Become The First Black Woman To Host A Travel Channel Show

Travel expert and television host Kellee Edwards is coming to claim her crown as the most interesting person in the world.

Nasha Smith • Feb 4, 2021

bbc travel show presenters female

Move over Dos Equis guy, travel expert and television host Kellee Edwards is coming to claim her crown as the most interesting person in the world. She has certainly made a strong case for herself.

Edwards has conquered everything from swimming with whale sharks in the Georgia Aquarium, zip-lined through the Mayan jungles in the Yucatán Peninsula, gone dog sledding in remote Alaska, and climbed the active volcano Mount Pacaya in Guatemala.

Her extensive travels have taken her to over 50 countries so far, including parts of North and West Africa, Asia, South and Central America, Europe, and the UAE. To add to that laundry list of accolades, Edwards is a licensed pilot and advanced open water scuba diver, with plans to add a motorcycle license to the arsenal.

In 2018 Outside Magazine made it official by naming Edwards ‘The Most Interesting Woman in the World.’ It’s an apt title for the woman who has described herself as a real-life “Bond girl, Lara Croft, and 007.”

But most people recognize Edwards as the host of the Travel Channel’s Mysterious Islands , where she journeys to the most remote lands in the world that the general population has probably never even heard of. This feat earned her the distinction of becoming the first Black woman to host a show on the network. She also co-hosted the channel’s The Trip 2018 .

Being the first to accomplish something in any field is arduous and Edwards’s path was littered with obstacles, most notably the fact that no one in the television travel industry had ever looked like her before.

“I heard, ‘Wow, I love you; you’re doing amazing things. We don’t have anyone who’s doing any of this, but we don’t know how our audience will take to you’, she told Newsweek in 2020. “They didn’t know if people will understand because there is a mold of the older white male in the space. And so that was the obstacle, that was the frustration.”

Edwards has always been unapologetic about her identity as a Black woman in a typically white male environment. She knows that it comes with premature judgments and misconceptions which is why she is always mindful of representing her community positively with every activity and interaction.

“As a Black woman, I have to think about a few things. I have to think about my safety because of my gender, my safety because of my race, and my presence, period. That’s why I learned to do so many things. I choose to be strong not because I am, but because I don’t have a choice. I don’t have a choice when I traverse this world to show up weak because it could cost me. And I refuse to let anyone stop me from experiencing what is also mine.”

A Travel Star is Born

Edwards caught the travel bug from her parents. Her earliest memories include road trips and a move to San Bernardino, California from the south side of Chicago where she recalls the profundity of the mountainous landscape and desert. Edwards credits her father with exposing her to new experiences like camping and swimming. Her mother was equally as influential in encouraging her wanderlust, taking her daughter to Hearst Castle in San Luis Obispo County where she was blown away by the concept of royalty.

She shared in a radio interview earlier this year, “When I started to look at the world and watching Nat Geo and Travel Channel and all this, I’m like, oh, I should go to these places.”

However, Edwards never set foot on an international flight until after her college graduation from California State University Fullerton where she obtained a BA in Communications with an emphasis in journalism. Her parents couldn’t afford the usual spring break excursions but as she got older Edwards felt compelled to travel. Her first solo trip was to Bangkok, where she recounts having feelings of anxiety but also exhilaration. She had gotten a taste and was now hungry for much more.

As with most success stories, the path isn’t always a straight line. Edwards initially cut her teeth in entertainment journalism, patrolling red carpets and doing press junkets. Eventually, she realized that this was not her cup of tea and started seeking out an avenue that would feed her soul.

Her thoughts turned to travel, but she wasn’t sure this was even an option.

“Is there such a thing as a travel journalist?” she questioned.

Determined to carve out a new career, Edwards set out to find the answer. Enter YouTube, where she started creating content, seeking brand partnerships and making a name for herself. This is how Kellee Set Go , her one-woman adventure travel show, was born. It wasn’t long before Edwards started drawing the attention of travel industry executives and the Travel Channel came calling.

The rest, as they say, is history. In this case, Black history.

“I had a real defining moment once I realized that me having a show on the Travel Channel was really happening. I was filming a commercial that airs on the network right now. I was in St. Croix. And the line was, ‘Hi I’m Kellee Edwards, you’re watching Mysterious Islands only on Travel Channel.’ Even right now I get chill bumps from it,” she shared in an emotional video . “Because it was the first time I had ever said my name, the name of my show, and Travel Channel in one sentence. And it made it so real. All those moments that seem like doubt and failure were worth it.”

Pushing Boundaries

Edwards is not the type to rest on her laurels, so naturally she sought out a new challenge, flying, but for a very specific reason.

“When I wanted to break into the world of adventure travel television, I was looking at everyone up there: Anthony Bourdain, Andrew Zimmern, Bear Grylls, Jeremy Wade, Josh Gates—all these badass people exploring the world in their own different ways. And I think, well, everyone’s getting on a plane to go to these far flung places. But no one’s flying themselves there. I need to become a pilot,” she explained of her motivation to fly in an interview .

With all these miles logged under her belt and a resume that would put several explorers to shame, it might come as a surprise that the seemingly fearless Edwards wasn’t always so courageous. As she tells it, travel became a conduit to conquering what she dreaded most which ironically included heights and the ocean. But tackling the seemingly impossible is also her general approach to life.

“A lot of things scare me, but the woman I stare at in the mirror each day says, “That’s the way you want to go out? Afraid?!” And I always respond, “Nope! Not today!,” she said in a self-penned piece . “I take everything I do in stride and for the moment. And this, my friends, is how I get through my life of adventure. I show up and force myself to often deal with the presented opportunities at hand. Truth be told, if I actually thought about all the things I’ve actually accomplished in life, I could easily come up with a million reasons why I should take the risk. Helen Keller said it best: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”

BBC News runs BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC World Service as part of its rolling news coverage, journalists and presenters also contribute to podcasts produced by BBC News for BBC Radio 4 , as well as solely for BBC Sounds .

The BBC has over 5,500 journalists [1] based both in the United Kingdom and abroad. BBC appointments can be short- or long-term; for example, reporter Peter Bowes revealed on BBC News (broadcast live on 8 September 2020) that Los Angeles has been his home for 25 years.

Many presenters listed here contribute to various BBC News programmes, and some are involved in other BBC projects. Additionally, certain BBC News presenters offer relief presentation for programmes airing on these channels. It's important to note that this list excludes presenters of broadcasts simulcast from the BBC News channel on BBC One overnight or during weekday mornings on BBC Two .

The presenters listed below often contribute to various BBC News programmes and may have roles in other departments within the BBC. Additionally, some BBC News presenters not listed here occasionally fill in on programs broadcast on this channel. Noteworthy exceptions are the presenters of the domestic programmes BBC Breakfast , BBC One bulletins, and BBC Newsnight simulcast on the domestic feed.

A significant change occurred on April 3, 2023, when the BBC consolidated its domestic and international rolling news channels into a unified operation. To spearhead news broadcasts on the merged channel during weekdays, the BBC appointed six (original) "chief presenters". This has since grown to twelve. Among them, nine are based in London, while two operate from Washington DC and one operates out of the BBC News studio in Singapore. [4]

Chief presenters

The programmes where the presenter is the lead presenter are shown here in bold. Chief presenters work across BBC One, BBC Two and primarily the BBC News Channel. The chief presenters broadcast on the channel between 12:00 and 8:00 London time during weekdays. Chief presenters will front BBC News coverage of editorially significant events on weekends. News broadcasts outside of these hours, and on weekends are fronted by other BBC presenters, many of which previously appeared on the domestic and international rolling news channels prior to their merger.

Other presenters

The list below reflects presenters' normal postings, but can be posted to cover other studios

The broadcasters mentioned below frequently contribute to various BBC Radio programmes and may hold roles in different departments within the BBC. Moreover, some BBC Radio hosts not listed here occasionally step in on programmes aired on this channel.

The list provided indicates the usual assignments of correspondents. In instances of significant global events, like the Libyan crisis in 2011 or the Gaza conflict in 2023, foreign correspondents may be temporarily reassigned from their regular locations to cover these stories on a rotational basis. During such times, they are often labelled as "World Affairs Correspondents" or, if in Europe, as "Europe Correspondents." Subsequently, they return to their usual assignments. Additionally, this temporary reassignment may occur to cover holidays, primarily in July and August, as well as during Christmas periods. The BBC has a variety of specialist positions also including Regional Editors who are often shared across the world service output also.

Asia/Pacific

North america, middle east.

Only network correspondents are listed, but additional correspondents from national and regional news teams also report for the network.

Presenter Martine Croxall sues BBC for age and sex discrimination

Case comes after insiders warned of a potential ageism row last year following merger of BBC News and World News channels

The BBC is facing another damaging row over equal pay, with the presenter Martine Croxall taking legal action against the broadcaster for age and sex discrimination.

Croxall is suing the corporation after being off-air for more than a year following the merger of the BBC’s News and World News channels, according to listings for London Central tribunal court for 1 May.

The BBC declined to comment.

Last year BBC insiders warned of a potential ageism row at the broadcaster after the merger of the BBC News channel and its commercial global counterpart BBC World News, which resulted in the axing of some of the BBC News channel’s most famous faces – including Jane Hill and Ben Brown, as well as Croxall.

Geeta Guru-Murthy, Karin Giannone, Kasia Madera and Annita McVeigh have also been off air for more than a year, but Guru-Murthy and McVeigh recently returned to the news channel.

The BBC director general, Tim Davie, was asked about the situation during a culture, media and sport committee hearing last month. He said the BBC was moving towards a “fair resolution” for the women.

“It is not a good situation where you are paying people [who are not on air] and we are trying to get it resolved as fast as possible. I recognise that it has been going on for some time,” Davie said.

In 2020 Samira Ahmed won her equal pay claim against the BBC because of the difference between her £440-an-episode rate for presenting viewer feedback programme Newswatch and the £3,000 an episode Jeremy Vine received for hosting Points of View.

The BBC’s former China editor Carrie Gracie won substantial back pay in 2018 after going public with details of how she was out-earned by equivalent male journalists at the broadcaster. She later accused the corporation of lying and briefing against her.

In a difficult week for the BBC, the outgoing boss of its World Service also raised serious concerns about the impact of cuts on the broadcaster on Thursday. Liliane Landor told staff in an internal email that she was “deeply concerned about the operational capability of the World Service if additional cuts continue to weaken it further”.

Informing staff of her decision to leave, Landor said swingeing cuts in the past two years had “incrementally impacted our global reach and the breadth of our services”.

Government-imposed freezes to the licence fee have forced the BBC to make deep cuts to staffing and programmes, which Davie last month described as “shortsighted” and damaging to the UK’s soft power on the global stage. Davie said 14 years of cuts had reduced its budget by 30% in real terms and had “chipped away at our income over many years and have put serious pressure on our finances”.

The BBC World Service , which broadcasts in 42 languages across 59 countries, has been particularly hard hit . Traditionally funded directly by the government, George Osborne’s austerity measures brought in from 2010 shifted its funding on to domestic licence fee payers – a move that Davie said should be reversed.

Landor said the World Service had decided to “stop programmes and close platforms that were valued by our audiences”, but added that she was proud of the service for refusing “to let reduced funding stifle us”.

But while conflicts continue in the Middle East and Ukraine, Landor suggested that the BBC – and the UK – faced serious risks if the service continued to be cut. “The competition has become tougher, with state-funded bodies and other players significantly increasing their financial investment,” she said.

Weekend Woman's Hour: Ruth Wilson, Young women and voting, Jing Lusi

Why are 4.3 million young people not registered to vote? And Professor Nessa Weinstein on the benefits of Solitude.

This week, Ruth Wilson explains why she’s running this year’s London Marathon for an Alzheimer’s research, following in the footsteps of her father who ran the first London Marathon in 1981.

Tuesday was the deadline to register to vote in the local elections on May 2nd. The most recent data suggest that 4.3 million young people in England aren’t currently registered. We hear from Sharon Gaffka, who’s supporting the Give an X campaign, that's calling on young people to get involved. A survey by the youth led charity My Life My Say also says that fewer than 1 in 6 of young women trust politicians and more than four in 10 believe their vote won’t make a difference in an election. We also hear from Rosie Campbell, Professor of Politics and Director of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London, to explain the trends behind the latest data.

In 1927 journalist Sophie Treadwell attended the sensational trial of Ruth Snyder, a New York woman accused murdering her husband. Ruth was found guilty, along with her accomplice lover Henry Judd Gray, and both were executed by electric chair in January 1928. Those events inspired Sophie Treadwell to write the play Machinal, which premiered on Broadway later that year. A recent production has just transferred from the Theatre Royal Bath to the Old Vic in London and its star, Rosie Sheehy, along with US academic Dr Jessie Ramey join Jessica to discuss the case of Ruth Snyder and why Machinal still resonates with audiences today.

Professor Netta Weinstein of the University of Reading, is the co-author of a new book, Solitude: The Science and Power of Being Alone and joins us to discuss the benefits of solitude.

Jing Lusi stars as DC Hana Li in ITV’s new thriller Red Eye, set on a plane flying between London and Beijing. She joins Jessica Creighton to talk about what it’s like to play a lead role for the first time, and how important it is to see British East Asian women as the main progatonist
