Virtual: a simulated (made up) environment based on the real world. Often computers are used to create virtual worlds.

Honey Bee Hive Virtual Tour

Illustration of VR googles looking at a virtual beehive.

With or without VR googles, this beehive is fun to visit.

What if you could shrink down to the size of a honey bee? What would life look like?

Hummmmmm is the sound that you hear all day long. It is only broken up by the close buzz, buzz, buzz, of some of your sisters flying by as they head in and out of your home. Life as a honey bee is one filled with important work. Everyone has a job to do. The queen bee lays eggs all day long. Worker bees build the waxy honeycomb cells, fly out to collect pollen and nectar from flowers to feed the youngsters and to make delicious honey.

With this virtual beehive, you get the chance to visit different hives that are part of ongoing research at the ASU Honey Bee laboratory.

How to explore the virtual beehive

Once you enter the beehive there are some basic icons you want to look for while you explore. The most important one is the Location Icon. You can find them located throughout each virtual tour. They are used to move from location to location. On a computer, smart phone or tablet you can click or touch the icon to move to the new location. When using goggles, you place the pointer on top of the Target Icon to move to the new location.

Beehive VR 360

This virtual honey beehive was captured at the Arizona State University Bee Laboratory. Biologists focus their research on these important insects.

Honey bee hive 360 VR

As you explore this biome, take notes on what you see. Here are a few questions to get you started.

  • Why do beekeepers wear white?
  • What shape do bees use to make their honeycomb nests?
  • How do beekeepers calm bees?

Try out other virtual 360 tours:

  • Virtual Biomes
  • Virtual Hummingbird Feeder

Thank you to the ASU Bee Laboratory, Osman Kaftanoglu, and Cahit Ozturk for all their assistance in capturing the VR 360 views and videos of the honey bees.

I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know how much I enjoyed my tour and tasting. It was an amazing experience. I learned so much and really enjoyed the staff and their warm professionalism. Throughout the event I kept wishing my family was with me and thought of several friends I will encourage to attend. I will definitely go again. Thanks for your work, and for making the tour and tasting such a memorable experience!

Grace & Tom G.

Thanks for much for the amazing tour of bees. It was a day we will long remember and looking forward to sharing it with our friends. Definitely one of the best kept secrets for the Charlotte area. The bee keeper, Joseph was very knowledgeable – gave a fascinating history of the importance of bees. He kept us all siting on the edge of our chairs. The honey tasting was an experience above any I would have expected. Love the way you paired types of honey with cheese. It was a fun experience and full of new ideas. It was FIRST class.

Grace & Tom G.

Amy & John H.

“We really enjoyed our Hive and Honey Tour experience with Beeyond Bees and can enthusiastically recommend it to others. We learned a lot about the life of bees in an interactive way and felt warmly welcomed by the excellent staff. Perhaps most memorable was the opportunity to taste so many varieties of tasty honey in the tranquil farm setting of Ivy Place. Thank you!”

Amy & John H.

Bob & Grace

"What a fun adventure!  The people are very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed learning from Joseph, the bee master.  The honey tasting was sweet.  We look forward to going again and taking friends."

"Excellent presentation. Very knowledgeable bee keeper with great passion. Now, I have a lots of respect for bees and keepers. And the highlight was the wonderful gourmet honey tasting. Love all the different ways to taste and use honey in meals and recipes. Well worth the money and totally enjoyed the event.   A thumbs up for Beeyond Bees!"

About Beekeeping Tours

Touring rules, request a tour.

We have finished the 2023 season but will soon start scheduling tours for the 2024 season!!

Many of our patrons wish to learn more about bees, but do not have the time or space to start their own beehive. We have created this opportunity to be an exciting way for families, church youth / school groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Trail life and American Heritage Girls groups to get an up close and personal look at life and work of the beekeeper and the honeybee.

The tour lasts about 1 1/2 hours and consists of a 45 minute familiarization class on bees, beekeeping equipment, pollination and products from the bee hive. You will then suit up in one of our beekeeper's suits and watch as our beekeeper opens a live bee hive with the group. Participants will have the opportunity to hold a frame of live bees if they wish.  Take as many pictures as your wish!

How do I schedule a tour?

Tours are scheduled by reservation only.

We ask that all group tours have a minimum of 10 people, and the reservations must include ages and approx. suit sizes needed for the participants.

We do have "weebee" suits for the little ones, with our smallest suit about the size of a 4 year old.

Don't have 10 people?

No worries. We will have select dates for Family days, Homeschool days, Senior days and so on.  Just email us with your information and we'll let you know the select Saturdays in May and June that we have set aside for these.

Keep updated on these by joining our newsletter or following us on Facebook or Instagram.

Remember, Bee flexible!

Beekeeping tours are weather dependent, for obvious reasons. If it is raining heavily, we do not open hives! We may potentially reschedule your tour in the event of heavy rain.

Honey bees usually only sting to defend their hives, however, here are some basic considerations and rules of participation for your own safety:

Dress appropriately

Participants must wear pants and no open toed shoes (i.e. shorts and flip flops). Bee suits are sting resistant, not sting proof, and they do not cover your feet.

No perfumes

We recommend that on the day of the tour that you do not use perfume or strongly-scented products. The bees may think that you are a big flower and become personally interested in you!

We personally have one dog, three cats, too many chickens, and three sheep, so we like animals. But animals can be naturally curious and get stung, thus panicking and hurting other animals or little humans around them. Please be considerate of your pets safety and those around you and arrange for pet care before visiting the apiary.

Must sign an agreement

Each participant must sign (or their parents or legal guardian) a hold-harmless agreement that will be available at the apiary on the day of the tour or if need be, we can email the form to you for prior signatures. This agreement ensures that you or the parent / legal guardian understands the inherent risk around a working bee hive and we will not be held liable for bee stings, allergic reactions or unsafe behavior by participants of your tour as well as our right to refuse a participant a tour if we deem they are acting in a unsafe manner at the apiary and near the bee hives.

Beekeeper's Experience $12.00/person for adults and children 4 and up

Candle making session is in addition to the Beekeeper's experience and is an additional $6.00/person.  This session lasts approximately 30 minutes and includes making your own rolled beeswax candle, instruction on some of the other candles we make and produce and why beeswax candles are so unique, as well as a mini sample of our lotion bar. As time allows, we may also include a sampling of some of our specialty Creamed honeys available.      NOTE: Some of our creamed honeys DO contain nuts.

Our mission is simple, raise healthy honeybees, grow mindful beekeepers

Aloha I’m Katie. Welcome to HĀNAI HIVES, a journey born from humble beginnings rooted in the heart of Oahu, Hawai’i. My passion for bees was ignited in the most unexpected way – through my children’s elementary school garden program. As a group of dedicated parents, we nurtured a garden that not only yielded wholesome fruits and vegetables for school snacks but also sowed the seeds of consciousness about organic practices and sustainability. It was during a screening of a poignant documentary on the challenges faced by bees that our commitment took flight. Moved by the urgency to act, we formed a close-knit community, and with the serendipitous support of the seasoned beekeeper Mr. Glenn Perry, we ventured into the world of beekeeping. This journey continues to thrive through the Ojai Valley Bee Club, a testament to the enduring impact of shared passion. Now, with an empty nest as my children venture into the world, I tend to a buzzing family of about 75 beehives, nurtured with the unwavering support of my Hānai Hives ‘Ohana.

Bee Garden Tours

Bee Garden Tours

Whether you live near Savannah, or you’re just visiting our beautiful city on vacation, a Bee Garden Tour at our Wilmington Island location will make for a truly memorable experience.

Tours start in the showroom with our observation beehive. This unique type of hive is housed indoors and is encased in glass, allowing you to see all the amazing activities happening within the hive. One of Savannah Bee Company’s educators will give you a little history about Savannah Bee Company and teach you all about honeybees, beekeeping, and the impact bees have on our everyday lives and the environment.

Then your guide will lead you outside to the bee garden, where you'll get up close and personal with a working beehive to learn about the behaviors and habits of honeybees and the important hive ingredients in our beauty products -- honey, beeswax, propolis and royal jelly. Don't worry -- you will be provided with beekeeper's hat and veil. Honeybees are generally very gentle creatures who mind their own beeswax, but we do want you to feel safe.

Lastly, head back inside for a guided honey tasting during which you can sample and learn about all the different varieties of honey Savannah Bee Company has to offer. Don’t forget to try all our luxurious body care products and peruse all the bee-related extras.

What Our Clients Say About Us

Loved the honey bee tour at Hi Honey Farm! Booking was simple and the owner was very easy to contact. Booked the 3PM slot same day and because it's still a fairly new tour, it was like a private session for my sister and I 😁 Our tour guide did great in showing us the land and their various plants, letting us experience the bee life cycle, and finding the queen. The tasting, lead by the owner, was amazing as well! My favorite was tasting the "Bee Keeper's Breakfast" which I won't go into detail about so that readers will get curious and book a tour to try it. Definitely going to be my breakfast now too. Thank you to the Hi Honey Farm duo! Wish you guys the best and mahalo 😄 Show More

Owner has created a Super fun, unique bee and honey experience with very flavorful tastings, beautiful property with lush plants, educational, and really relaxing environment. You sense the passion! Highly recommend Show More

Amazing experience! It was perfect tour and testing! Tour was very friendly and very knowledgeable. Honey is delicious, I bought few jars of honey. This is the best high quality honey I really recommend. Thank you guys! Show More

10/10. We had amazing guides, delicious honey, and a great time today. We ended up buying a few jars of the honey we tried during the tour. It was truly a unique experience and having the tour just be our party was really nice and allowed us to thoroughly learn about the process. Really glad we found this honey farm and I couldn’t recommend it enough! Show More

beekeeper who helped me in my time of need. From the moment I called, he was responsive and attentive, listening carefully to my concerns and offering expert advice to help me resolve my problem quickly and efficiently. He arrived at my property in record time, and went straight to work, using his knowledge and expertise to address the issue with skill and precision. Throughout the process, the beekeeper was not only knowledgeable and efficient, but also kind, generous, and patient. He took the time to explain what he was doing and why, making sure that I understood each step of the process and was comfortable with the solution he proposed. He went above and beyond in every way, making sure that I was completely satisfied with his work and that there were no lingering issues or concerns. Overall, I would highly recommend this beekeeper to anyone in need of expert beekeeping services. He is truly one of the best in the business, and his dedication to his craft and his commitment to his clients is unmatched. If you want fast, efficient, and expert service from a kind and caring professional, look no further than this beekeeper. I guarantee you won't be disappointed! Five stars all the way! Big Mahaloz HiHoneyFarm!!!!!! Show More

Went out here recently, and had a blast. It's an educational tour about bees, how they work ,and how they effect native plants of hawaii. The owner Stanislav gives a on depth tour of working bee colonies. You are able to hold the trays and see all the different types of bees within them. I highly recommend this tour, as a local for over 30 years it's rare that we ever go on tours or anything like that so for us to enjoy it this much is rare, and I would like to do my part in expressing my thanks for HI Honey Farm for providing such a unique experience, and one that we need. Bees are important to our ecosystem and economy here in America and we are destroying them when we should be saving them. My wife and I had so much fun that I gave them a shoutout on my 84k follower instagram page @crimanllycute_cats to help spread the word, and I was able to post longer videos and stuff there aswell! Mahalo! Jaaron and Kelsey of Kailua! Show More

We had an amazing experience! The tour was phenomenal - it was so fun and immensely informative. My 6yr old loved learning more about all things honeybee. I highly recommend the tour, it's absolutely a hidden gem here on Oahu. Show More

An amazing experience for all. We had a wonderful time learning about bees, visiting hives, exploring native plants and we even witnessed the birth of a new baby bee. The grounds are lush, beautiful, filled with wild life and well maintained. We were all provided with bee suits for safety and got to handle the bees ourselves under the watchful eyes of owner and master beekeeper, Stas. He was a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. After the educational tour, we had the pleasure of sampling all the different honey that HI Honey Farm produces, each honey was distinct and masterfully created. Truly an excellent experience for all ages. We highly recommend this tour and we will definitely be back! Show More

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
