This hunt includes 10 days accommodation and trophy fees for kudu, blue wildebeest, impala and warthog. Book this hunt and enjoy a classic safari hunt in the untamed bushveld of South Africa’s Limpopo Province. Fair chase hunting, no game farms, and no hidden costs.

Bushveld Adventure 10 Days (9 Nights) Accommodation Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Impala, & Warthog $8,230 Per Hunter (1×1) $7,760 Per Hunter (2×1) $1,995 Per Non-Hunter

The bushveld of western Limpopo Province is famous as one of the best destinations for kudu and impala hunting in all of southern Africa. In addition to the big kudu, blue wildebeest, and impala this area is known for, this part of the country is also home to large and diverse populations of many other species of plains game. With the opportunity to enjoy an incredible African safari hunting experience for exceptional trophy quality animals in one of the wildest and least developed areas remaining in South Africa, it’s easy to understand why this is one of our most popular hunting packages. This South African hunting safari includes the trophy fees for a kudu, a blue wildebeest, an impala, and a warthog.

Species Available At This Camp : Blue Wildebeest, Blesbok (Common & Saddleback), Bushpig, Bushbuck, Cape Buffalo, Duiker, Eland, Gemsbok, Giraffe, Impala, Klipspringer, Kudu, Monkey, Nyala, Porcupine, Red Hartebeest, Sable, Steenbok, Warthog, Waterbuck, and Zebra

Testimonial:  For those booking a hunt with John, you should know that what he is a guy you can depend upon: he is solid, dependable, experienced, and will deliver on what he tells you. I value honesty and integrity and both John and the professional hunters he works with have it in spades. I booked a plains game hunt with John and couldn’t have been more satisfied when it was over. The Limpopo camp on the river is exactly what I wanted: it’s dedicated only to you (there are no other hunters) and is old style. Kobus (my PH) and Fielmon (my tracker) are both highly experienced and it was fascinating to watch them work together. It was an incredible experience!

This package includes the trophy fees for four of South Africa’s most iconic plains game species: blue wildebeest, blesbok, warthog, and impala.

Testimonial:  I saw more game animals than I have ever seen in my entire life hunting in Texas. During my time in Africa, I was blessed to take a beautiful zebra along with a monster wildebeest, blesbok, and warthog. The accommodations were first class. I felt like a VIP the entire time. When you hunt there it is literally all about you.

The other best aspect of the hunt was my PH Kobus. When I arrived and shook his hand that first day at the airport we were client and PH. When I shook his hand getting on the plane to return to the United States, we were friends. That sounds very cliché but it is the truth. Kobus was professional, extremely knowledgeable, accommodating, patient with a newbie like me, he delivers everything he promises, and above all he is a good man. I enjoyed every second we spent together and I am very much looking forward to hunting with him again!

Testimonial:  I took my 14 year old son on this hunt and I can’t say enough good things about the experience! Big Game Hunting Adventures was absolutely great and John had everything totally prepared for us. Every detail of the hunting experience was taken care of in an exceptional manner. The number of animals we saw on this hunt was amazing and Johan (our PH) was perfect. With his help, we took some very nice trophies on our safari. Testimonial:  An epic trip! We were anticipating a nice hunting camp, a fair chance at a few animals for me, good food, and some decent wildlife watching to entertain my wife and her friends. What all of us found was five star dining at a beautiful ecotourism resort that had fabulous hunting and a staff who went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. This far exceeded our wildest expectations and we couldn’t be more pleased! My wife and I were thinking this was the trip of a lifetime, but we and I are already planning to return. Kobus, Billy, Filoman, Rasilli and the rest of the team are true professionals, and all of us left knowing we’d become good friends. I feel incredibly lucky to have connected with Big Game Hunting Adventures and John!

South Africa Cape Buffalo Hunting Package 7 Days (6 Nights) Accommodation $14,700 Per Hunter (1×1) $14,400 Per Hunter (2×1) $1,475 Per Non-Hunter

When it comes to hunting adventures, few experiences can compare to matching wits with the legendary Black Death  on foot in the African bushveld. After all, there’s a reason why cape buffalo are the most sought after member of the Big Five. This hunt takes place on our wild and undeveloped hunting area in western Limpopo Province. In addition to healthy populations of plains game and buffalo, this area still has that “wild Africa” feel with leopard preying on antelope, crocodile and hippo in the river, and the sounds of jackals at night. So, if you’ve always dreamed of a true African safari hunting adventure like the ones you read about in  Outdoor Life  and  Sports Afield , then you’ll have the trip of a lifetime on a Cape Buffalo hunting safari with us. This package includes the trophy fee for a trophy cape buffalo bull.

We have a 100% success rate over the past four years and our lifetime success rate on Cape Buffalo hunting safaris is over 90%. We only hunt hard bossed bulls, not immature bulls who have not had an opportunity to breed.

Testimonial:  First class outfit all the way around! They really make the whole deal easy and are right there for you the whole hunt every step of the way. John, Kobus, Johan and the rest of the crew will take good care of you and do everything possible to ensure a safe, successful, and very enjoyable hunting experience. I just completed my second safari with them and I’m ready for a third!

South Africa Cape Buffalo/Sable Hunting Package 8 Days (7 Nights) Accommodation 1 Cape Buffalo Bull & 1 Trophy Sable $20,135 Per Hunter (1×1) $1,655 Per Non-Hunter

With their long and spectacular curved horns, sable antelope are another one of Africa’s most desired trophy animals right up there with buffalo. Fortunately, this African safari hunting package is an excellent opportunity to hunt both sable and buffalo on the same trip at a discount. This hunt also takes place on our hunting area in the bushveld of western Limpopo Province and there are good prospects for a taking 40″+ sable bull on this hunt. This package includes the trophy fee for a trophy cape buffalo bull and a sable.

South Africa Cape Buffalo Cow Hunting Package 7 Days (6 Nights) Accommodation 1 Cape Buffalo Cow $6,775 Per Hunter (1×1) $6,585 Per Hunter (2×1) $1,475 Per Non-Hunter

We also offer a limited number of hunts for cape buffalo cows, which are a more affordable way to hunt cape buffalo than targeting a trophy bull. Specifically, we’re targeting older, post-breeding age cows without calves on these hunts. These old cows have been around the block a few times and are as formidable of an adversary as a bull. Indeed, approaching a buffalo herd in the thick bush and evading all those eyes, ears, and noses to identify and shoot an older female without a calf is an experience you won’t forget!

This package includes the trophy fee for a cape buffalo cow.

South Africa Wing Shooting Fees Pigeon, Dove, Guinea Fowl, Crested Francolin, Sand Grouse, White Faced Ducks $355 Per Hunter, Per Day $25 Per Day Shotgun Rental $12 Per Box of Shells

Our primary hunting areas have some fantastic bird hunting opportunities and you’re welcome to add a day or two of wing shooting onto a plains game and/or buffalo hunt. In particular, our main camp has healthy populations of pigeon, dove, and guinea fowl year round. Other species are migratory.

Depending on the exact time of year and exact bird species we’re hunting, this can range from sitting on the edge of a field pass shooting doves and pigeons as they come and go (in flocks of dozens and hundreds) to some sort of beaten hunt for other birds using people and/or dogs. There’s good bird hunting all year round, but there are definitely seasonal peaks. The months of May, June, July, and August tend to have really good hunting for a variety of bird species. Contact us for more details on adding some wing shooting to your hunt.

Professional Video Service $295 Per Day $2,065 for a 7 day hunt $2,360 for an 8 day hunt $2,950 for a 10 day hunt

Want to relive your once in a lifetime hunt and/or share the experience with friends/family when you return home? If so, then you’ll definitely want to book the services of our videographer. He’ll go out hunting with you each day, film the events of your trip, and then build a video of the entirety of your hunt. He’ll do all the editing in camp and will provide a USB flash drive with the completed video on your departure day for you to take home with you.

Videos are normally 40-60 minutes long and tell the story of your full experience: the hunt itself, camp life, especially interesting encounters with wildlife, etc. You’re also welcome to make special requests of him while you’re there. Contact us for more details on booking a videographer for your safari.

Why Should I Book A South Africa Hunting Safari Package With You?

  • No hidden costs: our South Africa safari hunting packages include everything except for your air fare, taxidermy, and shipment of your trophies.
  • We are not a high turnover outfit. Instead, we focus on providing quality hunts with the best possible experience for each guest. For that reason, we only book one hunt at a time. Instead of sharing the area with people that you don’t know, you’ll have the whole place to yourself. This allows us to give you our full attention and ensure that you receive VIP treatment on your hunt.
  • We’ll pick you up at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. So, unlike a hunt in Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, or the Eastern Cape of South Africa, no follow on airline flights or plane charters to places like Harare or Port Elizabeth are necessary if you book a South Africa hunting package with us.
  • If you want to bring your own rifle, we’ll get a temporary import permit for you and help you with all the paperwork involved at no extra charge. So, there is no need to go through the hassle of importing your rifle on your own or pay an additional $200-300 to another company for their help with this.
  • We book a limited number of hunts each year, abide by strict quotas, and carefully manage our hunting areas. This ensures that our hunters have high success rates and take the best quality trophies possible (over 90% of our trophies make the Safari Club International or Rowland Ward record book).
  • Our Professional Hunters (PHs) are friendly, knowledgeable, and have many years worth of experience guiding North American, European, and Asian hunters on plains game and dangerous game hunting safaris.
  • We take pride in providing authentic African hunting safaris with outstanding personal service before, during, and after your hunt. You will not have problems getting in touch us when and we’ll be available to you through the entire process to provide assistance with anything you need related to the hunt.
  • We strive to provide high quality, all-inclusive African hunting safaris with no hidden costs. We specialize in providing classic safari hunting adventures and do not offer cull hunts or hunts for non-trophy animals. Not every hunting outfitter prices their hunts in this manner. There are lots of “cheap” or “discount” African safari hunting packages out there advertising cut rate hunting prices and hunters who book those sort of trips often get what they pay for.
  • This is a veteran owned and operated business and we plan all of our safari hunts with military precision and attention to detail.

For more useful information on our Africa hunting packages, read our Africa FAQ .

Advantages of Booking An Africa Hunting Safari Package

The biggest advantage of booking a hunting package with us is that our packages are priced at a slight discount. We also build our Africa hunting packages for the ideal length of time to hunt the animals included. This is especially helpful for hunters on their first trip to Africa. Finally, as previously mentioned, our Africa hunting packages include all the costs associated with the actual hunt. The price advertised here is the price that you will pay at the end of your hunt.

Can I Take Additional Animals If I Book An African Hunting Safari Package?

Absolutely! During the course of a hunt you will normally encounter hundreds of animals each day. It’s virtually guaranteed that you’ll run into a couple different species that you were not planning on hunting (and maybe didn’t even know existed prior to your safari) while you’re in Africa. We pride ourselves in flexibility and if you decide that you’re interested in taking an additional animal or two, just let your PH know and he’ll do his best to get you a shot at what you’re after. Additional animals are priced at our normal trophy fees .

What Happens If I Don’t Take An Animal Included In A Package?

We historically have success rates over 90% on most species of plains game. However, since we do practice fair chase hunting for wild animals, nothing is guaranteed and hunters do occasionally fail to take an animal they were after. So, if you do not take one of the animals included in your package, you will not be charged the trophy fee (at time of booking) for that animal. That being said, while we will make every effort to recover all animals wounded during our hunts, any animal wounded and not found will be charged full price.

What Is A Typical Day Like On An African Safari Hunting Trip?

A normal hunting day normally begins early in the morning when the hunters wake up and eat breakfast, which consists of coffee, rusks (a hard, dry biscuit), cereal, and juice. Generally, the hunters, the PH, and the trackers leave camp around sunrise in a 4×4 hunting vehicle carrying a cooler full of drinks and snacks. Depending on the desires and physical abilities of the hunter, we may hunt on foot via tracking or walk and stalk, set up on a good vantage point and glass for animals, or hunt from a blind.

Depending on how things go, the hunters may eat lunch in the bush during a break from the hunt, or they may return to the main camp to eat. The hunt then continues until dusk, when the hunters return to camp for dinner and to prepare for the adventures of the next day!

The video below does a great job of showing what the area looks like and how we conduct our hunts.

What Is The Food Like On An African Hunting Safari?

Regardless of whether you’re visiting from the USA, Canada, Europe, or Asia, excellent food is really a point of emphasis for us on our South Africa hunting safaris and we take great pride in serving delicious meals prepared from the game taken on the hunt. All meals are prepared on site by our professionally trained chef and consist of a combination of authentic South African cuisine and wild game.

picture of dinner on south african hunting safari

Meals feature lots of meat, vegetables, and fruit and are accompanied by fine South African wines specifically chosen to compliment the meal. After a hard day of hunting, you’ll get a chance to relax and unwind with a sundowner and snacks around the fire pit before dinner while you rehash the day’s experiences and talk about tomorrow’s plans.

What Are The Accommodations Like On An Africa Hunting Safari?

Our hunters all stay in individual chalets wired with 220v electricity. Each chalet is kept in pristine condition and furnished with a bed, sink, toilet, and a shower. Our camp also features a fully stocked bar and an outdoor fire pit so you can sit around the campfire and swap stories each evening. The camp staff will also do your laundry as necessary over the course of the hunt.

Can I Bring A Friend/Family Member Along Who Doesn’t Want To Hunt?

Sure! Our facilities in South Africa are all very comfortable and non-hunting guests are welcome in camp. A large number of our hunters bring along friends and/or family members who are not interested in hunting, but still want to enjoy seeing what Africa is like. For this reason, non-hunting guests are welcome to accompany the hunters on safari each day and we are happy to arrange a game drive, photographic safari, other wildlife viewing opportunity for them.

We can also organize other activities like hot air balloon rides, wildlife viewing, photo safaris, trips to Kruger National Park (which is a great opportunity to see other wildlife like lion and rhino), or visits to nearby tourist attractions. Contact us for pricing on these additional activities.

A Rudimentary Guide on Africa Hunting Safari Regions

African Hunting Safari

Safari hunting experiences vary greatly based on the region and it’s important to have at least a rudimentary picture of what to expect. Here is a quick safari hunting  guide:

Southern African countries such as Namibia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa are the most popular countries among hunters ( source ).

Not only do these countries provide hunters with outstanding experiences, but they’re also affordable and ideal for first-timers.

Eastern Africa – especially Ethiopia, Mozambique, and Tanzania, on the other hand, boast vast wilderness areas. These places are packed with wild-game animals like buffalos, lions, elephants, and leopards.

These regions are fantastic if you desire a comfortable safari spiced up with a thrilling hunting adventure.

Central and Western African countries are the most appealing to experienced hunters, who are after challenging games – giant eland and bongo.

With such a wide range of terrain, diverse destinations and different species of animals to choose from, hunting safari in Africa offers something for everyone.

Packing List for Hunting Safari

Africa hunting

Note that clothing may vary depending on the length of your stay, the location, and your preference.

The general rule of thumb is to make sure you pack suitable colors (like neutrals) for your hunting days. Most of the time khaki or jungle green is recommended.

Items to consider packing are:

  • 2 long trousers
  • 2 walking shorts
  • 1 lightweight hunting jacket
  • 1 wool sweater
  • Wide brim field hat
  • Medium weight socks
  • 1 pair of sturdy boots
  • One pair of camp slippers
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunblock cream
  • Power adapter

African Hunting Safari Packages

safari-hunters

African hunting safari is certainly not a cheap hobby. The price varies depending on the country and the exact animal species you intend to hunt.

Generally, non-exotic species such as gazelle, impala, kudu, wildebeest, eland warthog, zebra, and so on of plain games are the most considerately priced.

Most packages of African hunting safaris are primarily based on two things;

  • Daily rates – this covers lodging, meals, transportation, service of a professional and qualified hunter
  • Trophy rates – this is the price you’ll need to pay for any animal killed on the hunt

That said, a 5-day or more African safari hunting expenditure can cost upwards of $3000 to $10,000 depending on the outfitter, type of safari hunt, and the country of the hunt.

This is no different for African hunting safaris.

Factors that Influence Costs

There are a few factors that are taken into consideration in determining the cost of any African safari. Some factors include:

  • Country plus the specific hunting areas
  • Length of the hunting period (days)
  • Availability of trophy animals
  • Quality of the trophy
  • The method used in hunting
  • Travel and accommodation arrangements

Whether you’re new or a seasoned hunter, you need to dig a little deeper to get a close estimate of how much your adventure will cost.

This will spare you from unpleasant surprises of hidden fees as these quickly add up to a significant amount.

silver-back

Before you set out on a hunting safari, be sure to ask if the price quoted includes permit fees and local taxes.

Mostly, African hunting safari pricing tends to fall under the following structure:

300*252

• All-inclusive hunts excluding trophy fees plus client-dependent extras

• Hunt packages including the trophy fee for a particular list of animals

• Self-tailored hunt packages with a discount on trophy fees

• Itemized hunt prices with all the necessary fees and the daily rates

Classes of Hunted Animals in an African Hunting Safari

Basically, there are several game classifications;

  • Plain games

Dangerous big game hunting safaris are common in various Eastern and Southern Africa countries. Some of the species available to hunt include; Cape buffalo, Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Leopard, Crocodile, and Hippo.

There are different hunting methods for each animal.

For instance, Cape buffalo and elephants are usually hunted on foot which mostly involves lots of walking and tracking.

Sometimes there is use of traditional bowhunting weapons.

On the other hand, leopards are hunted with dogs or on bait, while lions are either hunted on bait or tracking method.

Again, the method used highly depends on the hunting outfitter of your choice.

A Typical Hunting Day

Your day will begin early, at dawn with breakfast after which together with your PH, you’ll board a hunting vehicle and drive to the hunting area.

Most African hunts are done using the ‘spot and stalk’ method whereby a potential game is spotted.

Then you get out of the vehicle and commence on stalking.

safari-tourism

Stalking can take anywhere between a few minutes to a couple of hours and you’ll be guided by your PH on how to approach the potential trophy.

Mostly, it gets hot by noon especially during summer which makes it unbearable to get any spotting under the scorching sun

It is during this period animals go into hiding from the sun.

Around this time you’re likely to be directed back to the hunting lodge for lunch and a short rest.

You’ll later commence on an afternoon hunt which takes about the same form as the morning hunt.

The hunting will go on till dusk where you’ll enjoy a magnificent sunset before calling it a day and getting back to the hunting lodge.

Frequently Asked Questions on an African Hunting Safari (FAQ)

Simply put, safari hunting is an adventurous excursion taken by an individual to hunt wild animals for recreation.

An African safari hunt can be an expensive affair but that’s based on a couple of factors; which includes the areas do you want to see? How do you want to get around? (Fly or drive) and of course, the species that you want to hunt down.

Trophy hunting costs can range anywhere between $500 and $ 8,000 but again, the total cost will depend on where and what you’re hunting, plus the available quality of the trophy.

Kenya is one of the African countries that have banned trophy (and any other form of hunting). While other countries like Botswana do allow hunting but taking trophies home may be restricted.

In addition to other personal items that you’d take on a normal safari, some essentials of an African hunting safari include; binoculars and bug repellent especially if you’re visiting around summertime.

Here is a short introduction to the show.

“In a civilized and cultivated country wild animals only continue to exist at all when preserved by sportsmen.  The excellent people who protest against all hunting, and consider sportsmen as enemies of wildlife, are ignorant of the fact that in reality the genuine sportsman is by all odds the most important factor in keeping the larger and more valuable wild creatures from total extermination.” – Theodore Roosevelt

The Ultimate Guide to Understanding African Hunting Safaris

Hunting safari in africa.

Hunting in Africa is an experience unrivaled anyplace on Earth for those wanting a vast range of game species, stunning scenery, century-old hunting customs, and the spice of risk. A hunt on the African continent will leave you with lifelong memories, whether you decide to go after plains game in southern Africa or go for Cape buffalo and elephant in the wilds of East Africa.

In some form, hunting is available in more than a dozen African countries. The majority of hunters travel to the southern African nations, particularly South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. These nations provide excellent hunting opportunities that are both accessible and economical, especially for beginners. Large wilderness regions and significant populations of dangerous game species, including lions, buffalo, leopards, and elephants, are found in East Africa, particularly in Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Mozambique.

Hunting in Africa offers something for everyone due to the broad range of geography, nations, and game species available.

Planning & Packing for a Booked Safari?

In this post we are not focusing on planning, packing, and getting ready for your Safari. If that is what you are looking for, we have an extensive African Hunting Safari Planning Guide for that exact purpose. You can find it by clicking here.

In this article, we focus on the research part of African Hunting Safaris, giving hunters all the info you could ever need to understand Africa, African Hunting Safaris, and find the best hunt for you!

What does it Cost to Hunt in Africa?

An African Hunting Safari can cost anything from $1 500 to upwards of a $100 000.

So, why such a broad spectrum of hunting costs? Well, Africa offers the most diverse range of species in the world, with some being more abundant and less regulated than others. Another key factor is that many outfitters are not fully transparent and additional costs stack up once you are in country (more on this later).

But, to answer this question in full we need to first consider that there are four main components to the African Hunting Safari cost:

  • Your flights and accommodations en-route not during your Safari period.
  • The all-inclusive rate per day, per person.
  • The cost of the animals you will be hunting.
  • The cost of the Taxidermy & shipping, or the dipping, shipping & taxidermy in your home country.

Now, let’s look at these more closely to give you a good idea of what to expect, and why prices often differ:

1) Travel Cost to Africa Whether you book first class or economy is entirely up to you, however you need to get to Africa. There isn’t much to elaborate on this point, other than to say the average cost of flights to South Africa from the USA is around $1500 – $2500 , depending on your ticket and route. We have also found that a good route to fly, irrespective of your home country, is via Dubai. Your port of entry, most of the time, will be OR Tambo International in Johannesburg, South Africa. You may also click here to find up to date airline tickets.

2) The Safari Day Rate To keep things simple, most African hunting outfitters offer an all-inclusive day rate, which covers your in-country transport, your accommodation, your meals, your drinks, your hunting guide, your hunting vehicle and other gear, and more . Here, the terms “most outfitters” & “and more” is key. When looking for a hunt, make sure to check, and if it is not available, ask for a complete list of included & excluded costs, and explicitly ask for a list of any additional charges that might apply.

3) The Animal Cost This is where most of the differences in price come in to play. An Impala trophy might cost you as little as $300 depending on the outfitter, whereas a standard Leopard tag costs an average of $30 000. As you can see, the costs of your animal tags are completely dependent on what you want to hunt, and what you are prepared to pay. For an up-to-date Hunting Tag Pricelist, you can click here. An important note on animal tags is to make sure that the price quoted is for a trophy animal, if that is what you are going for. We have caught outfitters, more than once, offering clients extremely low tag costs only for the client to discover that they were purposefully obfuscated. The most popular tactic is to quote clients on cull-animals, and then pretend they didn’t know any better once you are in camp; forcing you to pay any amount they so wish for the trophy variant of said animal.

4) Taxidermy & Trophy Shipping A good rule of thumb is that your Taxidermy costs will be around 50% of the trophy animal cost . You may also work on an average of $2 000 for shipping of the trophy to your home country. Please note that this is only averages, and exceptions apply. We will speak more in detail about taxidermy later in this post.

D:\OneDrive\Pioneer Safaris\Adolf Werkende Files\Website\Journal

As you can see, there are a couple of functions which all come in to play for your final Safari cost. The only costs relevant to your chosen outfitter are the day-rates, and the trophy tag costs. But even then, many factors come in to play.

At Pioneer, we always recommend that hunters who visit Africa for the first time make use of a pre-made hunting package. Hunting packages are usually cheaper than custom made Safaris, but even more important is the convenience of knowing what the final amount is and knowing everything is included.

Where are the Best African Hunting Destinations?

South Africa is the best Hunting Safari destination in Africa, and doubly so if this is your first hunting Safari.

Every hunter will give you a different answer to this question. Usually, this is because of an exceptional experience they had, and fairly so! Africa is an incredible destination, and each country or hunting block tends to offer a completely unique experience. Asking an outfitter this question is also of no help, as the answer will be whichever country they are more familiar with. So, let’s tackle this question as objectively as possible by breaking it up into the various components that make for an excellent Safari.

Logistically South Africa is the closest thing to a first-world country you will find on the dark continent. In addition, South Africa is consistently voted in the top 10 best countries to visit for tourists. The nation hosts over 15 million tourists each year, with the majority of which enters through OR Tambo International, the same port of entry as for hunters. All this accumulates to one thing: a country overly prepared to accept, transport & protect tourism. The importance of efficient coordination in South Africa can be appreciated when you consider that tourism often contributes over 10% of South Africa’s GDP. That said, you should not expect the same transport network as you may be accustomed to at home. Nonetheless, out of all the countries hunters visit in Africa, South Africa is the clear leader.

Winner: South Africa

Frankly, you cannot rely on African public healthcare. Please make sure that you always have travelers’ insurance which includes medicare whenever you embark on a hunting Safari. Once you have done this, and private healthcare is considered, the clear leader in this field is South Africa. South African private medicare is world-class. This point needs no further explanation, there is no comparison to be made. Healthcare will be discussed in further details later in this post under the African Health Concerns section.

If you start looking for safety concerns in Africa, you might not ever embark on this adventure. We will discuss African Safety Concerns in its own section later in this post, but the truth of the matter is this: You will be met by your hunting guide at the airport, and you will not leave their side until you are dropped off at the airport again. We are Africans, born and bred in Africa, and understand the African way. As long as you stay with your guide, you are as safe as you will be in your very own home.

Winner: Draw

Hunting Quality

The quality of the animals, facilities & general service you receive is an obvious and massive factor in choosing your hunting destination. We understand that. The fact is that South Africa and Namibia surpass any other hunting destination by a mile when it comes to facilities and service. This is mainly due to much better infrastructure, and the fact that most hunting areas in these two countries are generational family estates. This availability of resources and time.

When it comes to trophy quality however, the answer is not so clear. South Africa has a definite and clear advantage over other destinations in the sense that it has a very developed game breeding industry, which has the direct result of exceptional trophies. What South Africa, nor Namibia, has to offer though, is free range hunting. Free range hunting does not deliver the best trophy quality on a consistent basis, this is a fact. What it does offer however is the rare opportunity at a pure natural beast. It is hunter’s choice, but if you are looking for the best combination of quality facilities, service & consistent trophy quality, the clear leader is South Africa.

Hunting success is dramatically improved when you hunt on estates. Namibia and South Africa are renowned for their exceptional hunting estates and as such can nearly guarantee success on the animals you are looking for.

Winner: South Africa & Namibia

You are welcome to scour the internet for months at end but allow me to save you the time. South Africa offers the best value hunting in Africa. Period. Being the oldest, best developed and most popular hunting destination in Africa, South Africa offers the most bang for your buck.

Adventure to me is anything that sets your soul on fire. That makes you feel alive and makes you believe you are ten years younger. Like something akin to being a character in a novel. If this definition works for you, let’s roll with it.

As mentioned, South Africa and Namibia do not offer free range hunting. All hunting is fenced. However, some of these hunting estates are larger than life and you can be mistaken for categorizing them as free range. Take Pioneer’s Battlefields concession as an example. A famous area, once the battle grounds of the Anglo Boer war against the British Empire, this 20 000 Acre hunting estate has not seen a gunshot (apart from a select few Pioneer clients) since 1993. This is a place where hunters, unaccompanied by a guide familiar with the area, can get seriously lost.

Other countries such as Tanzania and Mozambique offer clients true free range. No fences, migrating animals, and an experience where even your guide is surprised at what can be found. If you consider all this in combination with a lack of modern infrastructure and a feeling of being truly disconnected form the world, then no other hunting areas on earth can compete.

In truth, a hunting Safari in Africa is always a fantastic adventure! It is up to you which type of adventure you are looking for.

We cannot say that one country is better than any other. When it comes to hunting many people value the adventure over anything else, and as you can see, all of Africa’s popular hunting destinations offer adventure in abundance. That said, if you are looking for an objective answer to which country is the best, if you could only choose one, the clear answer has to be South Africa.

How is Hunting Typically Conducted in Africa?

African hunting is done “safari-style,” with hunters being driven in open-topped trucks scouting for animals or game trails. Once spotted, you disembark the truck to follow your prey on foot.

Although the “Safari Style” hunting is by far the most popular hunting style in Africa, especially outside of South Africa & Namibia, other styles to exist. Let’s look at them in more detail.

Safari Style

Whether hunting in South Africa or the Congo, the Safari Style hunt is by far the most popular and successful choice. Most hunting areas in Africa are massive, flat, open areas with game in abundance around every corner. Africa also offers a wide range of species, with each hunter looking for something a little different. This means that we need to cover a lot of ground during your limited time here. The best way to do this is by making use of our modified trucks, geared with all the hunting equipment you could need. Accompanying you on the back of the track is usually your tracker, and sometimes even your hunting guide if a dedicated driver is available. The task of those on the back of the truck is to make use of their elevated position to scout for any signs of animals and tracks. When a promising opportunity arises, all conditions (sun / wind / cover) is considered, and an on-foot stalk is planned. If the hunt was successful, the required amount of field dressing is done promptly, and the trophy is loaded on the truck to be taken back to the lodge for proper hide care, skinning, and the preservation of the meat.

Safari Style Open Truck Hunting in Africa affordable hunting safari for the working man

Sit hunts are most popularly done via blinds, and by bow hunters. Blinds in Africa, as in any other place, vary in size, style and objective. Sometimes outfitters may also put out some form of bait to lore animals in (such as a carcass for leopard) or have the blinds built originally on natural game paths or over water holes.

Driven Hunts

Driven hunts are less popular in Africa, and most common in the Western Cape Province, and Northern Cape province of South Africa. They differ from sit hunts mainly due to a less concealed waiting spot (often with the hunter’s location not being concealed at all in stark contrast to sit hunts which uses blinds); and the animals being driven to the hunter by horses or two-wheeler motorbikes (again, in contrast to blind hunts where a hunter waits for an animal to naturally walk past the blind).

Wing Shooting

Wing Shooting in Africa is rarely an outfitters primary business focus, but opportunities are available in abundance! Wing Shooting in Africa is conducted by packing enough supplies (ammunition and snacks) to satisfy hunters for a half-day, or sometimes a full day – hunter’s choice. You will be assisted by your hunting guide and the trackers who will help with reloading, managing the retrieving dogs, and offering you drink fill-ups and snacks.

Other Hunting Styles

All other hunting styles also exist in Africa but are less common and are usually only used due to circumstances. Ask your outfitter for more details if you have a particular hunting style in mind.

With What Can I Hunt in Africa?

On your African Hunting Safari, you are allowed to hunt with rifles from .243 calibre all the way to your .500 of choice and beyond. You are also allowed to hunt with longbows, crossbows, compound bows, handguns, muzzle loaders and many other weapons.

Every country has their own laws and regulations, along with minimum calibre requirements. For example, in South Africa the law allows hunting of Impala with anything from a .243 rifle, but hunting Cape Buffalo requires at least a calibre of .375 H&H.

When it comes to bow hunting most hunters prefer a compound bow. Here, the law also dictates minimum draw weights for various species. Our recommendation is always to choose an outfitter and a hunting area specifically focusing on bow hunting. One such an example is Pioneer Safari’s Berchtesgaden estate , which has not only developed infrastructure specifically with bow hunters in mind, but also has a dedicated team who are bow hunting fanatics.

To answer this question directly: You will find a location in Africa, particularly in South Africa, where you can hunt with any reasonable and effective weapon. The best thing to do however is to speak to your outfitter directly and ensure your weapon meets the minimum requirement to hunt the species on your wish list.

What Should you Hunt in Africa?

Every outfitter offers a different array of huntable species, but with Pioneer Safaris you have a choice of over 45 species.

You’ve heard us say this before – Africa truly is a target rich environment. Dramatic and varying habitats and ecosystems mean that species have adapted over millennia to now offer hunters the most diverse range of species found anywhere in the world. Many species are also found in various sub-species, making for an even greater challenge. Did you know, for example, that four distinct and visibly differentiable species of Zebra exist? In addition, up to six species of zebra are debated among the scientific and hunting community. Another example of this is the clear scientific evidence indicating that the two highly debated species of bushbuck, are indeed two species and not even sub species. With the so-called Eastern Cape bushbuck being more closely related to Nyala, and the so-called Limpopo Bushbuck being more closely related to the Bongo and Sitatunga.

Most species however are in abundance in South Africa where many hunting estates accommodate them for the specific purpose of allowing hunters the opportunity at each. Many of these South African species are either naturally occurring, or in many cases introduced via the nations extensive and well-established game breeding industry.

When a hunter moves outside the realm of introduced species, the conversation becomes remarkably interesting. South Africa still holds the most diverse natural occurring species, but for hunters who are regulars to Africa, this extensive list is exhausted in four or five Safaris due to the effective and near perfected hunting methods of South African hunting guides. These hunters then start looking North to central and Eastern African nations which offer species not available in the Southern tip of the continent, such as the aforementioned Bongo & Sitatunga, and more species such as the Topi, Gerenuk or Grants Gazelle.

Another point that makes hunting in Africa so fun, is the relationship between animals, and also the colloquial classifications which has been established over the years. Terms such as big 5, dangerous 7, or spiral slam is of the most popular of these groups. In short, many species have been lumped into various “groups” which introduces an exceptional challenge for hunters. The Spiral Slam for example is a collection of four species which feature spiral shaped horns, namely the Eland, Kudu, Bushbuck & Nyala.

The answer to what you can hunt in Africa, is that you can hunt enough species to keep you busy for more than a decade worth of Safaris without ever hunting the same species again.

Popular African Species:

Common Grey Duiker Hunting Africa South

What is the Most Challenging Hunt?

The most challenging hunt in Africa is the Tiny Ten antelope, which include Blue Duiker, Suni & Damara Dik Dik.

However, what does a challenge mean to you? Let’s explore how various species pose different challenges to help you find the answer you are looking for.

Most Difficult

The most difficult hunt in Africa is considered to be on the species belonging to the Tiny Ten group of animals. These small beauties are not only physically small, with some weighing as little as 5kg (11lbs), but extraordinarily clever. In fact, one of the species beloning to this group is the Duiker. Duiker is directly translated as “Diver”, and earned its name due to its instinctive behaviour to dive its small little body inside the nearest thick bush the moment they are alerted to any disturbance in the veld. Hunters will often walk right past these antelope if you are not vigilant enough.

Tiny Ten Blue Duiker Hunting Africa South

Most Dangerous

Featuring many nicknames, among which, “The Black Death”, the most dangerous hunt in Africa is without a doubt the Cape Buffalo. The Buffalo is the animal most responsible for hunting accidents and the primary on-duty cause of death for professional hunters. This is due to the Buffalo’s extremely stubborn nature, physical prowess, and of course their infamous desire for vengeance. At pioneer we are well aware of this fact and our Professional Hunters, your hunting guides, are well aware of this fact. Rest assured that irresponsible actions will not be taken and with a backup .500 in hand, your guide will ensure you remain as safe as possible.

Perhaps Robert Ruark said it best: “But I have a fear, a constant, steady fear that still crowds into my dreams, a fear that makes me sweat and smell bad in my sleep. I am afraid of  Mbogo , the big, black Cape buffalo . . . I don’t know what there is about buffalo that frightens me so. Lions and leopards and rhinos excite me but don’t frighten me. But that buff is so big and mean and ugly and hard to stop, and vindictive and cruel and surly and ornery. He looks like he hates you personally. He looks like you owe him money. He looks like he is hunting you . . . He makes me sick in the stomach, and he makes my hands sweat, and he dries out my throat and my lips.”

Most Adrenaline Rushing

If you are looking for a hunt that will get your blood flowing, Lion. Lions in their prime cover 100 yards in 3.5 seconds and have been recorded to keep this pace for up to 8 seconds – all while being dead silent and low to the ground. What can be more exhilarating than that? An animal with 4x the strength-to-weight of humans charging at you covering 100 yards in the time it takes you to shoot and reload. Combine this with the 4-inch canines you find on this 550-pound beast, and you have a formidable killing machine. Not to mention the deafening roaring and panting that accompanies an aggravated Lion, which is sure to send chills down your spine.

Luckily not all Lion hunts result in a charge, and the fact that you will have not one, but at least two experienced backup rifles standing by your side should give you some peace of mind. However, the knowing that this apex predator could turn and charge at any time earns hunting Lion the spot of the most adrenaline rushing hunt in Africa.

Most Physically Challenging

Any hunt in Africa can result in a physical challenge. Depending on location, circumstances and events, all African animals can take one on a tour to see the countryside. That said, some animals are notorious for hiding out in spots where vehicles can’t go, and the hike their and back is strenuous. Not to mention the spots these animals are located when you get a shot. So, which will it be, the Bushbuck? Reedbuck?

In my opinion. The Bongo has to be right up there as one of the most physically challenging hunts in Africa. That is, when you hunt it in its natural habitat. Bongo, commonly hunted in the Cameroon, requires a hunter to first travel to the forgotten parts of our planet. Once in camp, a large team of trackers meets you, all dedicated to finding Bongo in forests so thick and wild that it makes the Amazon look like a household garden. For days on end, you walk through the forest as it is simply not possible to drive through them. Your hike will not only be long, but you will be making new paths more than you are taking old paths. This is not even mentioning the unpredictable tropical forest weather, where heavy rain seems to come out of nowhere, drenching your already heavy hunting gear. After a successful hunt after a couple of days, the work is far from done. The Bongo now needs to be field dressed and recovered from these thick forests. Luckily though, you have a large team of local villagers standing by to assist with this task.

Is there Public Hunting Land in Africa?

Government owned, public land hunting is available in Africa, but regulations make for a completely different concept to what American hunters are accustomed to back home.

Each country in Africa has different laws and regulations making this question difficult to answer. We get into hunting laws in a later section of this post. As a quick examples however:

The South African government passed a series of legislation in the mid- to late 1900’s in an effort to protect and preserve wildlife. Effectively these laws turned any animal on private land into the property of the landowner. In a country where four fifths of wild habitat is privately owned, it is clear that hunting on public land is extremely rare and expensive, subject to extreme government-set quotas.

In contrast, Mozambique is a nation where very little land is privately owned, but is either national reserves, or government land entrusted to the local tribes. Here, you will hunt almost exclusively “public land”, but it is not as easy as buying a hunting tag and off you go. Similarly to South African efforts, to ensure that hunting is well regulated and both habitats and animal populations are professionally managed, the governments of countries like Mozambique allow a limited number of registered hunting outfitters to hunt in these areas, each assigned a hunting block, or concession.

If you are looking for a public land, truly free-range hunting experience in Africa, Pioneer Safaris is one of the few outfitters who can take you into Mozambique for such an experience. Learn more about this opportunity here.

How Do I get My Trophies Home?

Animals hunted in Africa can be sent to African taxidermists, or the raw hides & skulls can be treated and shipped to your local taxidermist.

Hunters have two options when it comes to getting you trophies hunted on your African Hunting Safari home. The cost of these two options are more or less the same. Doing taxidermy in Africa tends to be cheaper, but the shipping is more expensive due to a larger freight. Having your taxidermy done by your local taxidermist tends to be more expensive, but the shipping costs are dramatically reduced to to a smaller physical size of the cargo. Let’s discuss your taxidermy options and explore the shipping process.

African Taxidermists

Having your taxidermy done in Africa has one big advantage: the local guys have more experience and a deeper understanding of the animal’s true expression and the feeling the trophy needs to express. Most outfitters also have special arrangements with the local taxidermist and might be able to negotiate a better price on your behalf if you request it.

Your Local Taxidermist

The main advantage of having the work done by your local taxidermist is that you know and trust them already. You can also physically visit them to inspect the work, or easily communicate with them at will without being a literal ocean apart.

Export Permits

Permits are not something you need to worry about. Between your outfitter and the shipping company / taxidermist, this will be handled on your behalf. During your Safari you will frequently be asked to confirm the entry made into a “hunting register” by your hunting guide. This hunting register is an official government issued book which makes four carbon copies of each entry. Each entry contains the hunter’s name, location hunted, species hunted, date hunted, and animal parts to be exported. It also contains some legal information such as the hunting permit number and registration numbers of the companies involved.

One copy of the hunting register information is given to you the client, another is kept by the outfitter, a third is sent to the government for official record keeping and the final carbon copy of your hunt entries accompany your trophies wherever they might go. This paperwork is used to verify all processes and ensure an easy export of your trophies.

Shipping Your Trophies

If you make use of an African taxidermist, they usually have an inhouse team who takes care of the shipping on your behalf.

If you wish to take the raw materials back home to your local taxidermist, you will need two things: First, you will need to have your trophy parts “dipped & packed” which is in short, the process of treating the hides and skulls to avoid hair slip and to remove any bacteria and parasites. The second thing you will need is a shipping company. Again, usually the companies who treats your raw hides & skulls will also be able to help you here, but if not there are plenty of companies who specialize in trophy shipping.

As in all cases, your outfitter should be able to assist you with information on the above and contact details to their preferred partners.

What is the Hunting Law, and Regulations, in Africa?

The most important African Hunting Law is that clients are not allowed to hunt without a Professional Hunter, who on their turn must operate under the license of a Hunting Outfitter.

If you’ve ever hunted in any country other than your own, you are familiar with the fact that each nation tends to legislate and regulate wildlife in quite different ways. Africa is no exception. However, as a client this is a non-issue for you as one law ensures that you are always covered under all conditions. The only law that you as a client need to know, is that in Africa you must always be accompanied by a qualified & accredited Professional Hunter, who operates under the license of a registered Hunting Outfitter, when you are hunting. Foreigners are not allowed to hunt in Africa without these conditions being met and doing so may lead to your prosecution as a poacher. The hunting Outfitter with whom you have booked is then responsible for ensuring that all hunting activities are legal and legitimate.

That’s it, chapter closed. Right? Well, yes, but the point of this post is to inform you as much as we can. So here are a couple of other laws and regulations to consider. As mentioned before, every African nation have different laws so we will be focusing on South Africa for now. Do note however that everything we say here is also a law in some shape or form in other African countries, so you may use this as a broad African guideline:

Rule #1, Always:

Foreign tourists hunting in South Africa is classified as a “Hunting Client”. Hunting Clients are under no circumstances allowed to hunt without being accompanied by a qualified Professional Hunter, who is himself, or otherwise operates under the employment of a registered Hunting Outfitter.

Hunting Permits

All animals hunted in Africa requires a hunting permit. Many animals such as Impala is covered under the so-called “P3 exemption”. If the hunting area on which you hunt has P3 exemption, Impala and other species do not require an individual permit by may be hunted under the P3 permit. Ask your outfitter about specific species if this is a concern.

Export permits

Export permits deserves an article of its own. However, it is important that you know one thing. Only make use of companies with a proven track record, and who comes highly recommended by your outfitter, to handle your hunted trophies. Irrelevant of whether it is dipping, taxidermy or shipping, do not take chances on an unproven company. If you are unsure and your outfitter cannot help you, feel free to reach out to us, or ask on the forums on popular hunting sites such as Let’s Hunt .

Most African outfitters will treat you fairly and honourably. That is the one wonderful thing about this industry. However, if any disputes do arise, try to solve it calmly and professionally while in camp. Most African outfitters do not have the resources to fight clients in the courts of their home countries, and therefor explicitly states that any legal action will be taken in the country of their registration. Although recourse is possible, this puts an unnecessary burden on you as a client. It also taints the memory of what should be the greatest adventure of your life. Most hunting outfitters will not take it personally if you have any concerns, and in fact welcome any dialogue towards fixing your concerns. So, make sure to chat to them the moment you are unhappy about anything.

Firearms and Caliber Requirements

The Ordinance only forbids the use of.22 rimfire ammunition and contains very few other caliber restrictions or directives. Shotgun use is not allowed while hunting “Game” animals other than birds or hares. Semi-automatic or self-loading rifles may not be used to kill common or protected species, although they may be used to hunt “problem animals” and “wild animals that are not game.” Although your professional hunter will not permit the hunting of any animal with a weapon with insufficient killing capability for the particular animal, there are no limits on using muzzle-loaders or pistols for hunting. Almost any weapon may be used for hunting on P3-Exempted farms, where the majority of hunting by foreign tourists is done.

Bows and other String Weapons

African hunting law is slightly behind the curve when it comes to bow hunting. So make sure to ask your outfitter. As for South Africa, we can give you a quick roundup. South Africa allows bow hunting and crossbow hunting for plains game and dangerous game hunting except for elephants, black rhino, white rhino and crocodile.

Obviously, many other laws exist, but these are the most important as it pertains to your discovery and decision-making process of booking your next African Hunting Safari. As mentioned above, if you have any questions, feel free to ask your outfitter, they know the law. You are also more than welcome to contact us with any questions you might have.

Is it Safe to Hunt in Africa?

Africa is a safe hunting destination. As you will be traveling with your hunting guide, you are very unlikely to witness, and less so fall victim to any crime.

If all the popular hunting destinations, you will find the most news and reports on crime in South Africa. However, it must be noted that South Africa is by far the most efficient in reporting crime statistics. So if the statistics aren’t reliable, how do we figure this one out?

Allow me, an 8th generation, born and bred African, to chime in here. I have travelled across the vast majority of Africa via the commercial routes and via self-driven overlanding. Much more the latter. Central Africa is as familiar to me as my brother-in-law, and Southern Africa is printed on the back of my hand. You can wake me up at three in the morning and I’ll happily create a Safari itinerary for you by heart. I know this place.

Here is my personal experience: South Africa is an extremely safe place to be if you refrain from going to the places you won’t be going on a Safari anyway. The same can be said for Botswana and Namibia, however these countries are extremely sparsely populated and as such I tend to feel the most comfortable to turn my back here, no matter what I am doing. Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Mozambique & Zambia are fantastic destinations, but can be unpredictable.

But the truth of the matter is that you will be accompanied by your hunting guide wherever you go. We know where the hotspots are and will under no circumstances take any client near them. Couple your physical separation from dangerous areas with good old common sense, and you will not be in danger at any point more than you would be back home.

A small caveat: Some destinations as mentioned are unpredictable. Tribalism and poverty are very real issues in Africa and as you might have read elsewhere, tensions do flare up from time to time. If you are hunting in any of the above-mentioned unpredictable areas, please speak to your outfitter first and specifically enquire about current unrests in these countries.

What are the African health Concerns?

If a hunter takes the necessary precautions, like taking Malaria medication if you visit a Malaria area, you will not fall ill to any exotic diseases – Africa is a safe place to visit.

Due to poverty, a lack of general hygiene knowledge and the lack of proper public healthcare, Africa is a place with more health concerns than your home country. Another concern to you might be dangerous animals, snakes and parasitic diseases such as Malaria. However, taking the correct precautions and using common sense, you will not fall ill to any strange & exotic diseases. Let’s look at these concerns:

Going on an African hunting safari during the continent’s winter months will reduce your chances of coming into contact with a snake (June – August). You shouldn’t let your fear of snakes keep you from going on safari if your schedule requires you to go at a different time. Hunters seldom get snakebites, so don’t let that stop you from taking advantage of Africa’s fantastic hunting.

You won’t necessarily run the danger of getting malaria, or even being in an area where Malaria exists. Although those pesky mosquitos are found across Africa (as in the rest of the world) the areas where they carry Malaria is limited. To find out if you will be hunting in a malarial region, it is best to consult your outfitter. We are not medically trained professionals, and this does not constitute medical advice. Before visiting malaria areas, please seek medical advice from your doctor regarding medication. To put your mind at ease however, if you are visiting a Malaria region, your guides and outfitter will be well acquainted with the disease, with many of them having had it themselves multiple times.

Yellow Fever

South Africa does not require vaccinations against yellow fever. In countries where there have been outbreaks of yellow fever, vaccination records are required, and entry will likely be refused without them. According to the CDC, yellow fever vaccination recommendations vary by country. View the CDC’s recommendations here.

Sorry, we are all tired of it. As COVID regulations tend to change regularly, please check with your outfitter on what the latest requirements are for your destination country.

Who can Hunt in Africa?

Africa caters to all hunters, including children, senior hunters & disabled hunters.

Anyone can hunt in Africa due to the variety of hunting styles and types of hunting areas.

' src=

Amazing information. Thanks guys! I do have one question with regards to pricing. It seems like there is, more often than not, a major variation between the prices of one species among outfitters.

Where can I go to find the “actual” price to make sure I am not over paying?

' src=

Hi Kevin, that is a great question and probably worthy of another post all on its own. However, and in short: In Africa there is no such thing as an “actual” price.

In South Africa, the various species have the lowest price in the areas which have historically been their home range. The same species would be slightly more expensive in an area which is not historically their home range. This is due to the difference in local breeding stock that outfitters use to improve genetics on the various animals.

In other African countries, animals tend to be more expensive than in South Africa because of how difficult it can be to recover them, and because of more expensive government levies.

In all cases, a big factor is also the availability of the number of tags on that species.

You will find that when an outfitter is slightly more expensive on one animal, they are also slightly less expensive on another animal.

As always, talk to your outfitter and ask them what they can do with the price for you. But also remember that they do run a business and have dozens of employees, so there is only so much that they can do.

I hope that answers your questions.

History and Tradition of Hunting in Africa

Hunting has played an integral part in South African culture and has a long history dating back to pre-colonial times. The San people, who were the earliest known inhabitants of this region, were skilled hunters who used bows and arrows to hunt game. Hunting was a fundamental way of life, and it provided food, medicinal benefits, and materials for making clothing. Over time, this tradition has evolved, trophy and family safaris have become prevalent.

Understanding African Hunting Safaris

A hunting safari is a unique type of African adventure that combines the thrill of the pursuit with the experience of observing wildlife in its natural habitat. During a hunt, visitors will have the opportunity to stalk and hunt big game like Cape Buffalo, and antelope species while also immersing themselves in the stunning natural bushveld surroundings.

In contrast to other types of trips in the country, like photographic excursions, hunting trips are more focused on the actual act of pursuit versus observing wildlife. Safaris require hunters to have evolved shooting techniques as well as the physical fitness to navigate Africa’s rugged terrain. A hunting adventure also differs from other types of safaris in their benefit to conservation. Hunting trips actively support wildlife conservation efforts by providing funding for habitat preservation and management programs.

With strict adherence to the ethics and regulations surrounding hunting in South Africa, we ensure the hunters safety and the sustainability of wildlife populations. Our ethics promote fair chase principles. The industry is highly regulated to ensure that everything is conducted ethically and sustainably for the environment and the animals involved.

The 5 Best Countries for Hunting in Africa

It's time to start planning (or dreaming about) your next trip to africa..

It's very common for hunters to dream of incredible big game hunting destinations, which often means visions of Africa . The Dark Continent is known for having some outstanding big game hunting and best places to hunt in Africa truly provide opportunities for hunters that are unmatched anywhere else in the world.

These countries have a wide variety and abundant populations of game to go along with some very unique terrain.

Here's a rundown of the top five countries worth exploring scheduling a trip to. Keep reading to learn our choices for the best countries for hunting in Africa.

Best countries hunting Africa

The Big Game Hunting Blog

Though a relative newcomer to the safari game due to a long, devastating civil war that finally ended in 1992, Mozambique's wild game populations have made a fantastic recovery, which is why it should now be considered one of the best countries for hunting in Africa.

The government is investing a great deal of time and money to repair infrastructure damaged by the war and their efforts are really starting to bear fruit.

Located on the southeastern coast of the continent, Mozambique offers excellent hunting for many species of big game on the massive, unfenced government concessions that make up most of the hunting areas in the country.

Mozambique is quickly becoming a premier destination for Cape Buffalo hunting. With an estimated population of over 50,000, Mozambique has the second largest population of Cape Buffalo in Africa. As a result, serious hunters should consider booking a Mozambique hunting safari to take advantage of the opportunities for Cape Buffalo hunting in the country.

In addition to buffalo hunting, three other members of the Big Five may be hunted in Mozambique: elephants, leopards and lions. However, elephant trophies taken in Mozambique cannot be imported into the United States.

Related Content

The big list of where to hunt in africa, 7 animals in africa everyone needs to hunt, 10 of the best countries for hunting outside the u.s..

Hunters traveling to Mozambique can also take advantage of some crocodile and hippo hunting that is among the best offered anywhere in Africa.

Though buffalo are probably the most popular big game animal in Mozambique right now, there are some good opportunities for plains game hunting there as well. Species available include sable, nyala, eland, kudu, bushbuck, reedbuck, waterbuck, warthog, duiker (Blue, Red, and Bush), grysbok, oribi, steenbok, and suni (among many others).

Of the countries on this list, Mozambique is probably the least developed. As a result, some of the hunting concessions may only be reached by air charter. This adds complexity and expense to hunts in the country. Additionally, travel to Mozambique from the United States can be complicated, as there are no direct flights between the countries. Travelers typically must stop in Europe or South Africa first.

The way things stand now, I do not recommend Mozambique as a destination for a first trip to Africa. However, veteran hunters should be able to appreciate the outstanding hunting opportunities in Mozambique, especially for dangerous game.

Zimbabwe has long been a favored destination for hunters from all over the world and offers some of the best hunting for dangerous game in all of Africa (and at a reasonable price to boot).

In addition to buffalo, elephant, leopard, and lion, there is also fantastic hippopotamus and crocodile hunting in Zimbabwe. You can add to that the hunting opportunities for plains game such as eland, zebra, kudu, impala, tsessebe, roan, waterbuck, wildebeest, sable, bushbuck, warthog, and duiker. In fact, when hunting in a well-managed safari area, such as the renowned Bubye Valley Conservancy , hunters may encounter incredibly large and diverse populations of both dangerous and plains game in the same area, which is something few other places in Africa can match.

Unfortunately, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service recently banned the import of elephant trophies taken in Zimbabwe. It is unknown how long the ban will remain in place, but no elephants hunted after April 2014 may be legally imported into the United States and it does not appear that this policy will change anytime soon. While it's still legal to hunt elephants in Zimbabwe, keep in mind that American hunters may not bring their elephant trophies home.

Though the infrastructure of Zimbabwe tends to be better developed than that of Mozambique, the transportation network still lags behind that of other countries. Some of the more remote concessions may only be reached by air. There are no direct flights to Zimbabwe from the United States and most flights stop in the United Kingdom or South Africa first. The other potential downside to hunting in Zimbabwe is the unstable political situation there.

Though there is good plains game hunting in Zimbabwe, the country is best known for dangerous game hunting. With that in mind, I recommend Zimbabwe as a destination for seasoned hunters primarily pursuing game like buffalo.

Ever since Theodore Roosevelt hunted there during his famous 1909 safari, hunters all over the world have dreamed of a safari in Tanzania. Hunters often conjure visions of vast herds of plains game moving across the plains of Tanzania, and for good reason. Tanzania has a wildlife population that no other country in Africa can match, both in variety and in sheer numbers, which is why it is considered one of the best countries for hunting in Africa.

Among many others (Tanzania has over 50 species of animals that may be hunted), hunters may pursue zebra, wildebeest, eland, impala, warthog, Greater and Lesser Kudu, hartebeest, topi, bushpig, Roosevelt Sable, Fringe-Eared Oryx, roan, waterbuck, and multiple species of gazelle (most commonly Grant's and Thompson's).

In addition to plains game hunting, Tanzania has incredible dangerous game hunting, especially for buffalo. Tanzania is home to nearly a quarter of a million buffalo, the largest population of any country in Africa. Understandably, Tanzania produces some of the biggest buffalo in Africa and the current No. 3 and No. 6 buffalo in the SCI record book were hunted in Tanzania.

The country also offers excellent hunting for elephant (though Tanzania is also subject to the same USFWS elephant import ban as Zimbabwe), lion, leopard, hippopotamus and crocodile.

The biggest downside to hunting in Tanzania is the price tag: on average, Tanzania is the most expensive country in Africa to hunt. However, you really do get what you pay for with the opportunity to hunt a stunning variety of animals with plenty of chances to shoot a nice trophy.

For those that can afford it, Tanzania is a great place for a trip to Africa for either plains or dangerous game. For those on more of a budget, it may be better to hunt somewhere else first.

Located on the west coast of Africa between Angola and South Africa, Namibia was one of the best kept secrets in African hunting for a long time. However, hunters have recently discovered that Namibia has some of the best (and most reasonably priced) plains game hunts anywhere on the continent.

Since the Kalahari Desert occupies much of southern and eastern Namibia, the country is home to some of the largest populations of Kalahari Gemsbok and Springbok in the world. In addition to gemsbok and springbok, Namibia also offers good hunting for kudu, eland, wildebeest, zebra, blesbok, warthog, sable, roan, hartebeest, steenbok, duiker, and klipspringer. Namibia is also among the few countries where cheetah may be hunted, and the only place where hunters may pursue the Damarra Dik Dik and Hartmann's Mountain Zebra.

Though leopard may be hunted in most of the country, lion, elephant, and buffalo are only present in the extreme northern portion of the country. Most of the hunting for these three species is conducted in the Caprivi Strip, a narrow corridor stretching out from northeastern Namibia. Since the Caprivi Strip is so small, only a handful of these species are hunted there each year.

On the upside, Namibia is one of only two countries (South Africa being the other) where elephant may be hunted and their trophy imported into the United States. Additionally, Namibia is the only country in the world where Black Rhinoceros may be hunted, though the tags are rare, expensive, and controversial ( as Corey Knowlton found out ). Namibia is therefore the only country where a hunter may conduct a "Classic Big Five" safari (Black Rhinoceros, elephant, buffalo, lion, and leopard).

Namibia also has a very well developed infrastructure. Unless hunting in the Caprivi Strip, virtually all of the hunting concessions in the country may be accessed via road after flying into the capital of Windhoek. As a result, travel around the country is relatively simple and it is not too difficult to hunt at multiple concessions in widely separated parts of the country on one trip.

Though Namibia is not terribly difficult to travel to, travelers from the United States must unfortunately stop in Europe or South Africa first. Fortunately, most of the hunting outfitters in Namibia are very reasonably priced and can provide hunting for a wide variety of species. The Namibian government also recognizes the tangible benefits of sustainable hunting on both an economic and a conservation level. For this reason, the Namibian government is firmly entrenched to fight off attacks by anti-hunters on the practice, thus likely securing the Namibia on the list of the best countries for hunting in Africa for many years to come.

With all of this in mind, I recommend Namibia as a great destination for hunters on their first trip to Africa, especially for hunting plains game.

South Africa

Long known as being one of the crown jewels of African hunting, South Africa boasts some of the most diverse populations of wildlife on the entire continent and is unquestionably one of the best countries for hunting in Africa.

From deserts to swamps to forests to mountains, South Africa has virtually every type of terrain in existence, along with the wildlife that inhabits those ecosystems. Greater Kudu, Cape Eland, nyala, waterbuck, sable, roan, Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Red Hartebeest, Black Wildebeest, Blue Wildebeest, blesbok, impala, springbok, bushbuck, warthog, bushpig, Mountain Reedbuck, klipspringer, Cape Grysbok, duiker, and oribi are among the many species of plains game that may be hunted in South Africa.

In addition to plains game hunting, hunters can pursue most species of dangerous game, such as hippopotamus, crocodile, lion, and leopard in South Africa. There is also incredible hunting for Cape Buffalo in the northeastern portion of the country. Not only does the area have a very large population of buffalo, but the trophy quality of the bulls there is outstanding. Currently, five of the top 10 buffalo in the SCI record book were hunted in South Africa.

Additionally, though not known for exceptional trophy quality, elephant may also be hunted in South Africa and imported into the United States. Finally, by substituting White Rhinoceros (which may be hunted and/or darted in South Africa) for Black Rhino, a hunter can also complete a Big Five hunting safari in South Africa.

South Africa has potentially the best developed infrastructure on the entire continent. After flying into Cape Town or Johannesburg, a hunter can access virtually the entire country via road, or by a regional airline to smaller airports in all corners of the country. South Africa is also one of the few countries on the continent accessible via direct flight from the United States.

Since South Africa is such a well known hunting destination and because the country is so easy to access, the average price of a hunt there is on the high side, though not nearly as high as Tanzania. Even with this in mind, a South African hunting safari is still quite a bargain and is an ideal way to experience Africa for the first time, especially for someone interested in hunting a number of very diverse animals.

I had the pleasure of hunting with Cruiser Safaris back in 2013 which was my first trip. I had a great time Pieter and his family who were such gracious hosts. The accommodations were fantastic, the food was great the hunting was superb.

I had the best experience there of my life. It was really cool and overall, it was just the best place I’ve ever been. It’s better than Disney World, better than anywhere.

best hunting safaris in africa

I started hunting with Cruiser Safaris in 2011 after about a year of searching for a reputable company online and have been happy ever since, so much so that I’ve been back four additional times. Twice with my wife and two children, and each time I can’t say enough about the experience. Enough about the hospitality, enough about the quality of the hunting, the quality of the professional hunters and their skills, and most importantly the exceptional wonder that is the Lamprecht family.

First Class Hunting in Namibia

Line Shape

Jan Oelofse Hunting Safaris, our experienced and passionate team of professional hunters, will provide you with one of the best hunting experiences in Namibia and all of Africa. We are a family-run operation, established by the famous conservationist Jan Oelofse and his family in Namibia in 1975. Since the passing of this great man, our beloved husband, father, entrepreneur, inventor, artist, mentor and friend to many, the Oelofse family Annette and Alex with Carola, are carrying on the legacy he left behind. Our hunts are customized to accommodate the expectations of hunters from various backgrounds and ages, we welcome families with children, bow-hunters and disabled hunters alike. Being above all passionate conservationists, our dream is to offer hunts such to naturally sustain the environment and all its animals, with the interest of the current and the future generations of animals and hunters at heart. In Jan Oelofse’s words, our aim is to: “Always give back more to nature than you take out.” We invite you to experience exactly that which our forefathers called Africa!

Jan Oelofse Legacy Award

The Jan Oelofse Legacy Award has been offering hunts annually to disabled hunters since 1992, including 10 trophy animals, daily rates and skinning.

Previously, this award was part of the SCI Pathfinder Award, but unfortunately it was decided to no longer include this opportunity at the SCI events.

We have wholeheartedly chosen to continue this legacy in the name of conservationist Jan Oelofse, who was the founder of our outfit, and the initiator behind this award many years ago. Our facilities are fully equipped to cater for disabled hunters, offering hunts to outdoorsmen and women in wheelchairs, from lightly disabled candidates to quadriplegics. Our professional hunter Rudie de Klerk is exceptionally experienced in guiding these hunts, having suffered and recovered from a disability inflicted by an elephant attack some time ago. The recipients of this award have often found this experience life-changing, and have given us the opportunity to meet extraordinarily inspirational people, who have succeeded against the odds. It would be our greatest honour and privilege to continue hosting hunters who deserve to be rewarded for continuing a shared passion for the outdoors.

How to Pick the Right Guns and Gear for an African Safari

After 20 safaris, our shooting editor has dialed in his shortlist of the best gear to bring on a hunting trip to Africa

One hundred years ago, hunters on safari in Africa needed to take lots of gear with them, including everything from guns to tents. In some cases, a lot of the outfitting was conducted after arrival in Africa. Times have of course changed, and today your outfitter and their staff will take care of almost everything should you decide to take a trip to Africa. I’ve done 30-day safaris and only brought a rifle case, a standard suitcase, and a backpack. The truth is, you’ll actually need a lot less gear than you think, but amongst that gear are some items you must have. After 20 safaris, I have a reasonably good idea of what that list should include.

The Best Clothes to Pack for an African Safari

You’ll need one set of travel clothes to wear to and from Africa. A good addition would be a travel or photographer’s vest so you can keep personal items such as your wallet, passport, travel paperwork, specific medicines, and such close at hand.

Two pairs of gloves in the dirt.

Because your outfitter will do your laundry every day, two to three sets of hunting clothes are plenty; the type and style will mostly depend on the time of year and the location you will be hunting. Remember, Africa is upside down from America, the further south you go, the colder it will be.

In most locations—between May and September—cargo-style pants or shorts and a light button-up shirt—long or short sleeve—will suffice. I really like the trim-fit, pocket-laden Bushcraft pants from Kryptek for hunting (camouflage is not necessary). Add a good medium-weight jacket for cool mornings and evenings, and a pair of leather or tight-fitting tactical gloves because you may end up crawling on a stalk and will need to move the prickly stuff out of the way.

Bring the Right Shoes

A common pair of low or ankle boots for travel and to wear around camp are a must. Having an extra set of shoes will allow your hunting boots to breathe each evening. For hunting boots, I’ve found nothing can compare to those from Courteney for the African bush. They are made from buffalo hide, rugged, amazingly comfortable, and will keep thorns out of your feet. They’re available from several retailers in the States. Whatever you do, go with a full leather boot and avoid boots with mesh sides that allow the sticky things to find the tender skin of your feet.

Hunting boots with gaiters.

Gaiters are nice to have, too. You’ll be walking in high grass, sand, and gravely ground. Grass seeds, sand, and pebbles can find their way inside your boots and make walking uncomfortable. Alternatively, a high-top boot like the Courteney Jameson can help with this, but I’d still wear gaiters unless I was wearing long pants.

The Best Guns & Cartridges for an African Safari

There is this misconception that African animals are harder to kill than whitetail deer or elk. It is a complete case of misinformation, founded in part by myth and in part because many first-time safari hunters tend to shoot poorly when under the gaze of a professional hunter and tracker. You do not need a magnum for Africa unless you’re after dangerous game.

Man leaning on a rifle and tripod.

As evidence, on my wife’s first safari, she took gemsbok, wildebeest, and impala—all with one shot—using a 243 Winchester and 85-grain Nosler Partitions . I’ve taken most of the plains game in Africa very efficiently with a 308 Winchester. Any cartridge in this class will work wonderfully. This is partly because your PH will work to get you inside 300 yards, and partly because proper shot placement combined with a good bullet has more to do with killing than what’s written on the headstamp of a cartridge. Of course, for buffalo and the like, you’ll find that there are minimum caliber or energy requirements. These usually start with cartridges like the 9.3x62mm Mauser or the 375 Holland & Holland .

Also, you can legally hunt with a suppressor in Africa, and it is not complicated to get it in and out of the country. Your PH will thank you for it, and many people shoot better with them.

The Best Optics for Hunting in Africa

The importance of quality binoculars cannot be overstated. However, I think the mistake most African hunters make is to select binoculars that are too large. I prefer compact binos like the Swarovski CLs . They won’t tug on your neck, they’re light enough to use with one hand, and 8X is plenty of magnification. If you want to bring range-finding binos, that’s fine, but understand ranging is your PH’s job and you should be focused on shooting. While hunting several species like kudu, a spotting scope can help, but go with a high-quality, small, and lightweight option.

Binoculars on a truck seat.

For your riflescope, again quality is important. If your riflescope goes belly up halfway through your safari you’re in a bad situation. I’d strongly suggest avoiding cheaply-made optics. A moderate power range is best; the old 3-9X riflescope is hard to beat. However, with today’s riflescopes that have an 8X zoom factor, like the Swarovski Z8i , something with a 2-16X magnification range is fantastic.

Extra Hunting Gear to Bring to Africa

While you may not need much in the way of clothing, there’s some gear you should consider bringing. If you have any prescribed medications, bring them and put them in your carry-on; there’s no guarantee your checked luggage will arrive the same day you do. Sunscreen and bug spray are a good idea, especially in the African summer. Sunglasses and a hat are wise choices too, and I prefer a wide-brimmed hat to a ball cap.

A knife is a good idea for sure, but you don’t need a big knife. A pocket knife or a small fixed blade like the Montana Knife Company’s lightweight Speedgoat will suffice. What you might need more than a knife is a Leatherman or multitool and a kit for rifle cleaning and maintenance.

A flashlight and headlamp should be considered mandatory, and with the current electrical load sharing in Africa, a camp light too. Speaking of electricity, you’ll also want an American plug adapter to charge any electrical devices you might have, along with a compact battery pack just in case.

Rifle accessories include a good carry strap or shooting sling, and either shooting sticks or a tripod. I’ve become addicted to the Spartan tripod system because it’s so light, and I can use it for shooting, mounting my spotting scope when hunting kudu, and as a mount for my camera or smartphone.

Throw in a small personal first aid kit, and if you use tobacco—especially chewing tobacco or snuff—take all you’ll need with you. With today’s smartphones, a camera is not an absolute necessity. However, you may want to take photos at distance. If that’s the case, a good DSLR or mirrorless camera with a 400mm lens will yield great images.

The Best Way to Book Your Travel for an African Safari

Booking a flight to Africa is as easy as booking a flight anywhere else. However, if you’re traveling with firearms, there are some additional considerations due to the strict gun laws in South Africa. I suggest hiring some assistance.

Since 2006, I have used African Odyssey (866-486-9351/[email protected]) for all of my travel to South Africa. Not only are they only a phone call or e-mail away if I have issues or need to change my flights. They can arrange a meet and greet at the airport, assistance with firearms permitting, and lodging when necessary. I wouldn’t consider going on an African safari without the assistance of a travel agent that has experience with hunters.

Bring the Right Attitude

The most important thing you can bring to Africa is a good attitude and a willingness to learn and take direction from your professional hunter. The lifestyle in Africa is a bit different from in America; there’s no hustle and bustle. While you are there, you’re on African time, and by that, I’m not talking about the time difference. It’s best to chill out.

With a proper outfitter, you’ll also be well tended to, so be prepared to let them wait on you a bit. Let the trackers handle the loading, dressing, and skinning of your game. Sure, you can participate if you want. Because I’m continually testing different bullets that’s something I tend to get involved in. But you’re paying for preferential treatment, and you might as well enjoy it.

Also, be prepared to start planning your next safari before you return from your first. There’s something about the combination of the morning coo of a dove, brilliant African sunsets, the red dirt, and the magic of it all that will bite you hard and embed itself deep within your soul.

Definition of a Driven Hunt

Usually accompanying the cull hunt. Hunters are put out in specific strategic positions in the direction where the animals are anticipated to move. Once hunters are put into position the animals are moved either by horseback, pick-up or foot.

Definition of a Fair Chase or Walk and Stalk Hunt

Mainly accompanying the trophy hunt, animals are spotted and a plan is put in place to get into a preferable shooting position/distance by foot, for the hunter to make a safe and confident kill shot. This method can take hours to execute but the rewards are definitely worth it.

HUNTING SAFARIS IN CAMEROON

Best Hunting Safaris in Africa

Cameroon is a country in Central Africa that is home to a diverse range of habitats, including rainforest, savanna, and mountains, and thus offers some of the best Hunting Safaris in Africa. This diversity of habitats means that there is a wide variety of game animals to hunt in Cameroon. Some of the most popular game animals to hunt in Cameroon include:

  • Big game:  Lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and giraffes
  • Plains game:  Warthogs, bush pigs, waterbuck, kudu, and oryx
  • Antelope:  Bongos, sitatungas, and duikers

Best Hunting Safaris in Africa

Cameroon is one of the best places to go hunting in Africa. The country offers a wide variety of game animals to hunt, and the scenery is stunning. If you are looking for an unforgettable hunting experience, then Cameroon is the place for you.

Spear Safaris has negotiated the partial Hunting rights to the Vina 27 Hunting zone in the North east of the savannah region of Cameroon, as well as Voko / Bantadje communal area in the far Northwest of Cameroon, covering a combined 360 000 acres for free ranging wild life, and is thus able to offer you some of the Best Hunting Safaris in Africa available.

Vina 27 is an amazing area for LD Eland, it is not unusual to spot your Dream Bull from the Hunting car while out searching. You will on most occasions also be able to pass on Bulls, until you find the “Right Bull”. Additional to the LD Eland, there are sustainable numbers of Roan, Buffalo, Kob, Waterbuck, Hartebeest and a variety of smaller game. Our camp in Vina 27 is undoubtedly one of the best camps I’ve been in, in West Africa. Area 27 is a government controlled concession, and is affordable for LD Eland. The community based area is Home to Hunt-able numbers of the Giant Eland, Central Buffalo, Western Roan, Cob, Western Hartebeest, Red flanked duiker and Red river Hog’s to mention some. Area 27 is a government controlled concession, with the same species and more.

There are better areas in Cameroon, but they are also a good €10 000 to €20 000 more expensive than these Blocks. Until now we’ve enjoyed 100% success on Giant Eland hunts. The season starts in December but the better times are generally from February onwards. Camp is a fixed structure with Generator as Power source, giving us the use of A/C during the hotter months. Hunting is done by means of tracking or Spot and stalk mainly. Hunters do need to be prepared for a somewhat physical hunt as Eland are renowned for traveling and stalks can be up to 6 hours at time. Hunting starts in the early morning and most days we return for Lunch and a siesta before the afternoon hunt. Thus you are assured to have one of the best hunting safaris in Africa.

Spear Safaris recommends that you consult with your doctor or local health authority for specific information on health regulations and immunization requirements, such as yellow fever, in Cameroon. Malaria can be a concern in certain regions of the country, so it is essential to take appropriate measures. In addition to the basic medical supplies available in the camps, please remember to bring any necessary medication or special prescriptions with you. Our professional guides are equipped with satellite phones to ensure quick communication during emergencies. In the event of a genuine emergency, you can rely on the services of the Flying Doctor Medical Service, if you have made prior arrangements. This air medical service provides assistance and support when needed. Each flight is staffed with a fully qualified nurse and life-saving medical equipment. The Flying Doctor service maintains a radio link with its headquarters, providing swift access to medical expertise and resources.

2. Commercial Airline Flights Cameroon’s international airports are Douala and Yahounde International Airport, Air France operates daily flights with excellent connections through Paris to Cameroon. However, there are also many other carriers that can be utilized, so it’s advisable to consult with your travel agent for more options.

  3. Visa Requirements Citizens of certain countries are required to obtain visas for entry into Cameroon. It is normally required to obtain this prior to your arrival As the list of countries change from time to time, it is important to check with your local authorities or travel consultant regarding current visa regulations applicable to Cameroon. When traveling with fire arms it is essential to obtain Import permits well in advance, prior to your arrival. We strongly recommend using a travel agent in Paris for this.

4. Communications Each hunting camp is supplied with Satellite WIFI, which comes at a nominal cost. During every safari, communication can be established with base, as well as with other camps. Time GMT plus one (1) hour.

Electricity 220v – 240v AC. Power is generated by means of generator.

5. The Climate Cameroon, located near but North of the Equator, experiences a relatively small annual variation in temperature. The average daytime temperature in Cameroon is around 90 degrees Fahrenheit, but can reach 100 during the latter part of the season. 6. Recommended Clothing Bush clothes should be loose, comfortable and sturdy. Dark green heavy cotton is best, kaki is not the best option. Laundry is done daily.

  7. Regulations The season runs from December to April, with February and March being the most popular. By Cameroonian law, only hunting clients are permitted to hunt. Any observers who wish to hunt will result in upgrading the observer to hunting client status. This upgrade will involve adjustments to all fees, including basic safari fees and all government fees. “Safari” vs Hunting Trip?

  • Thread starter Tex .416
  • Start date Today at 7:36 PM

For some unknown reason, this question crossed my mind today. The longer I considered it, the less certain the answer became. What is the difference between a “safari” vs a hunting trip?

Rare Breed

To me I never had a hunting trip with trackers…only a safari. While I certainly enjoy a nice place to stay I have to say my last week of hunting with Tokoloshe was a great example of a safari versus a hunt. Old world bar with thatched roof accommodations. Tent camps with a common eating tent. Having three trackers after elephant spoor from morning till dark arriving back for a welcome drink by the fire

For an American I think I’d generally say the continent. A safari only applies to Africa in my mind. I also think it requires a time commitment. A weekend for a local is a hunting trip. A 7+ day hunt in Africa for an American is more of an adventure far from home and a safari to me.

“ Safari ‘’ is the Kiswahili word for journey. Remember Swahili originally a lingua Franca, a trade language using words from many languages. As I recall safari is the Arabic word meaning to journey. Hasten to add, I am no expert on languages. I have hunted all over the world and to me, ‘’ Safari ‘’ is an African adventure. Kindest Regards

A "hunting trip" is almost always a long drive and just me and the dogs or horses. Safari requires a long flight to Africa and also it's the only hunting I've ever done with a guide. I was unsure if I could adjust but for the most part it's worked out.

The word “Safari” probably makes me think of Africa or maybe other places where a planned guided hunt is taking place with the assistance of trackers,PH etc I had a Cull Hunt in Africa but could have been considered a Safari. I believe some people take photographic safaris. A guided hunt in Alaska is a term that is self explanatory and going bush could mean anything in Australia. I recently went on a hunting trip with my mate where the intention was to camp in the bush self sufficient and hunt Fallow deer on foot after taking a vehicle out to a chosen point to start hunting. Someti Aussies go Pig shooting. It’s some times multiple days staying in a shearer’s quarters , hut or a swag on the ground . You might pay for access or you might have a property that lets you on to shoot pests and any and all pigs are targeted to be dispatched. This could be known as pig hunting if you like the there. I’m often on foot but quads buggies and vehicles are all used to cover more ground and pursue pigs. Aussie pig doggers often consider themselves Pig Hunters. It’s and interesting question because you could go to a “Camp” in the Northern Territory to hunt Buffalo,Pigs, scrub Bull or Banteng and that may be a fully catered experience and maybe the most Safari like ex you would have in Australia. Watching som English and UK stuff and the there Gralloch is used. I’m sure we all use different terms of different origins for different aspects of the hunt.

Definition of SAFARI

Safari is an African word. So to me, safari is an African adventure, whether it be hunting or photography. Hunting trips are anywhere else.

As I recall safari is the Arabic word meaning to journey. Hasten to add, I am no expert on languages. I have hunted all over the world and to me, ‘’ Safari ‘’ is an African adventure. Whether you are looking to encounter the Big Five up close, see predators hunting down their prey, add to your collection of wildlife photographs, or relax in the tranquility of undestroyed landscapes, there is something for you in the national parks in Africa.

From the vast savannahs of the Serengeti to the lush rainforests of Bwindi, each safari offers a unique and unforgettable adventure.

If you are looking for safaris to add to your bucket list, you will never go wrong with the national parks we review here; they offer unforgettable experiences that are sure to captivate wildlife and nature enthusiasts.

<p>If there’s one place in the world to view wildlife in their natural habitat, then the Serengeti has to be it. The National Park is famous for the annual migration of zebras, gazelles, and wildebeests, so book early if you want to witness this phenomenon. Endangered species in the park include black rhinoceros, cheetahs, elephants, and wild dogs. </p><p class="has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size">Read also: <a href="https://worldwildschooling.com/hidden-beaches-in-the-world/">Hidden Beaches Around the Globe</a></p>

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Witnessing the great migration of wildebeests is undoubtedly Serenegti’s most iconic highlight.

But there is much more to enjoy other than the migration of the wildebeests. Serengeti is renowned as one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros) in their natural habitat. Other animals you may see on your safari through Serengeti include zebras, cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes and various species of antelopes.

Serengeti is also known for its high concentration of big cats, such as lions, cheetahs and leopards. These are typically elusive, and many people going on safaris do not get an excellent chance to spot them.

Besides the animals, the vast plains of Serengeti, featuring acacia trees, are so calming to look at, especially when they burst into greenery during the rainy season. Whether you are looking for a once-in-a-lifetime safari experience or you are into wildlife photography, Serengeti offers amazing exploration opportunities you need to experience.
