The Best Train Trips in the World: 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards

Ah, the allure of train trips . Adventurers and the eco-conscious are drawn to this glamorous, old-world mode of exploration for the impeccable slow-travel vibes, but there’s also something to be said about the perspective found onboard a train; you’re experiencing the landscape and scenery in a way that you can’t experience in any other mode of travel. A train trip often brings you where everyday roads cannot, whether it’s through untouched Malaysian jungles on the revamped Belmond Eastern & Oriental itineraries relaunching in 2024, or high into the Canadian Rockies with Rocky Mountaineer. For our 36th annual Readers’ Choice Awards —which capture the travel experiences our readers love best, from hotels and airlines to cruises , islands , and luggage —we called on all of you to rank the best of the best rail journeys out there. Here, dear readers, is how the dice fell.

20. Inca Rail, South America

If you’re interested in taking a train to Machu Picchu (and unless you’re a mountain goat, we suggest you do), Inca Rail offers a level of convenience that is difficult to match—and it’s also worth mentioning that the First Class service is priced more accessibly than other luxury operators servicing the same route. While on board, you can expect a tasty menu prepared with organic ingredients grown right in the Sacred Valley, live Peruvian music, ample windows through which you can admire the staggering Andean scenery, and a spacious Observatory Lounge complete with open-air balcony. For fresh and frothy Pisco sours this good, this is one train that’s well worth the price of admission.

19. Transcantabrico Gran Lujo, Spain

Take in all the sights and flavors of Spain ’s iconic northern coastline on this luxurious sleeper train, which over the course of a week makes its way between San Sebastián and Santiago de Compostela. You’ll enjoy on-board cuisine that celebrates each of the distinct regions through which this train passes, from Galicia to Basque Country. A unique aspect of this train is that it remains stationary overnight, allowing for late-night excursions and explorations that are uncommon on other sleeper train experiences.

18. Glacier Express, Switzerland

It’s been said that the Glacier Express is the slowest express in the world–it takes eight hours to traverse the 180-mile journey–but boy, do the views here invite a slow journey. Connecting the resort towns of Zermatt and Saint Moritz, the train provides an up-close perspective of some of this mountainous country’s most iconic natural features, including the Matterhorn, Piz Bernina, and the Rhine Gorge (dubbed Switzerland’s Grand Canyon). Book in Excellence Class and you’ll be served Champagne at your seat, followed by a six-course meal complete with wine pairings.

17. The Canadian, Canada

Take in every mile of the vast Canadian landscape from The Canadian , a special sleeper service offered by VIA Rail, the country’s national rail carrier. Keep in mind that this train is more about sightseeing from the cars than actually getting off and doing anything. But if you’re traveling in the comfort of Prestige Class—with your own private cabin, private washroom and built-in TV screen monitor with video selection—you’ll be perfectly content to take in the journey from the privacy of your very own picture window.

16. The Ghan, Australia

Completed in 1929, The Ghan runs through the heart of the Australian continent , from Adelaide in the south to Darwin in the north. It may have only started running its current route in 2004, but its history dates to the 19th century, its name harkening to the Afghan camel trainers and riders who first helped chart a course through the country’s interior. The three-day all-inclusive journey sees the train lilting its way through Australia’s Red Centre with diverse landscapes passing by. Travel through the expansive ridges of the MacDonnell Ranges, witness the awe-inspiring beauty of Simpsons Gap, and visit the opal town of Coober Pedy.

15. JR Kyushu 36+3, Japan

This train’s unusual name derives from Kyushu being the 36th-largest island in the world, and there being three key stakeholders on this journey: the passengers, the local community, and the rail company, JR Kyushu. It isn’t a sleeper train, instead offering a series of weeklong roster of one-day itineraries around the perimeter of Kyushu–a do one, do them all, or do as many as you like situation–but the journey is no less enriching for it. The inside feels like a ryokan, featuring immaculate woodwork made from local techniques, comfortable furniture, and a mix of private and communal spaces. It’s a gorgeous way to get off the beaten track on this gorgeous Japanese island, packing in a number of stops and towns into a single day of productive–yet comfortable–sightseeing.

14. Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train, Southeast Asia

The E&O is the stuff of train enthusiasts’ legends, and in February 2024, this storied train will at long last resume service after its pandemic-era pause–sort of. The train’s journey originally connected Singapore and Bangkok, but as of the new year will offer journeys through the jungles and coastlines of Malaysia, but all originating in and returning to Singapore. It isn’t the classic E&O route, but these new itineraries will offer deeper explorations of Malaysia than ever before, including guided snorkeling on Langkawi and excursions to Taman Negara National Park. Despite the new itineraries, the train still has all the old world touches that people love: Order a Singapore Sling in the Bar Car, take it to the outdoor viewing platform as the Malaysian jungle rolls on by, and you just might forget what year we’re living in.

13. Northern Belle, Europe

It’s all about the food—and the scenery, too, but mostly about the food—onboard this lovingly restored 1930s train , which zig-zags its way across the English, Scottish and Welsh countrysides. Each of the journeys on offer are day trips, so they require less of a time (and money) commitment than other luxury trains. But what the Northern Belle lacks in length she more than makes up for in quality: The meal services are exquisite, offering fine dining crafted mostly from U.K. suppliers, so you can enjoy classic British fare as the heaths, meadows, and dales roll on by.

12. The Maharajas' Express, India

There are luxury sleeper trains, and then there are luxury sleeper trains like the Maharaja’s Express , where a greeting of marigold garlands and rose petals showered at your feet kicks off the journey before your personal butler escorts you to your room. The Junior Suite rooms are surprisingly spacious, especially by train travel standards, and come with full-sized closets, comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and satellite TVs. Both of the on board watering holes–the Safari Bar and the Raja Club–have plenty of chairs, comfy sofas, books and board games. Each day of the itinerary includes special opportunities to experience India through the train’s luxurious and singular perspective: like an early-morning champagne breakfast on a private hillside overlooking the Taj Mahal.

11. Royal Scotsman, A Belmond Train, Scotland

It’s about the journey, not the destination, right? Nowhere is train travel more indulgent—or convenient!—than on Belmond’s Royal Scotsman , which departs from and arrives at Edinburgh’s Waverley Station. With only 40 guests onboard, the train circumnavigates the heart of the Scottish Highlands, passing such landmarks as the Kyle of Lochalsh and Cairngorms National Park. There’s even a dedicated spa carriage, where the specialists are trained to synchronize their motions with the natural lilts and tilts of the train. If that’s not luxury, we’re not sure what is.

10. Belmond Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train, South America

Named after the U.S. explorer who supposedly “discovered” Machu Picchu in 1911, the Belmond Hiram Bingham train line is as grand as the man’s claims. The round-trip journey connects the city of Poroy (just west of Cuzco) to the Lost City and Sacred Valley of Machu Picchu. The Belmond Hiram Bingham turns on the turn-of-the-20th-century charm, from gleaming polished wood and brass surfaces to lavish meals and accommodations, which offer plenty of space to stretch out: the perfect setting for viewing the mountains and rivers zooming past the window.

9. Golden Chariot, India

Experience a mix of Southern India’s greatest hits and lesser-explored destinations on board the iconic purple and gold Golden Chariot , which connects the Indian states of Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. All itineraries depart from Bengaluru, with options for both three-night and six-night journeys. This train’s strength is its access to off-beat attractions than what you’ll find on the well-worn Golden Triangle, such as the ruins of Hampi. With sparse crowds, and a comfortable train to retreat to at the end of each day, it’s an approach to India that captures all the magic this country has to offer.

8. Golden Eagle Danube Express, Europe

A pioneer in luxury trains for three decades, Golden Eagle is perhaps best known for its Silk Road and Trans-Siberian routes, but the Danube Express unlocks an approach to Southern and Eastern Europe which is no less breathtaking and engaging. The “Castles of Transylvania” route from Istanbul to Budapest is particularly unique–spend all day learning about Vlad the Impaler’s history through guided tours, then spend all night luxuriating in the comfort of the bar car or in the privacy of your room. It’s a combination of Europe’s best cities and most dramatic natural landscapes that is hard to experience in one go any other way.

7. Rocky Mountaineer, North America

Traveling in a coach outfitted with picture windows and glass-dome ceilings means that a Rocky Mountaineer journey leaves no sight unseen as you traverse the dramatic scenery between Vancouver , British Columbia and Banff or Jasper, Alberta. Sample local Canadian beer, wine and snacks as you kick back and enjoy the ride. The staff’s friendly service and animated storytelling help bring the landscape to life. It’s personal touches like those which keep travelers coming away from this trip amply satisfied time and time again. Since it was founded in 1990, Rocky Mountaineer has transported more than two million guests, making it the largest privately-owned premium tourist train in the world.

6. Rovos Rail, Africa

This extravagant railway has been traveling throughout Africa for over thirty years. The experiences start before you even board—when departing from Pretoria, Rovos Rail travelers are granted exclusive access to a private lounge, where Champagne and canapés greet them—and a strict “no cellphone” rule is maintained for your own good. Enjoy the moment(s) provided by this line, which range from cozy digs to formal-attired evenings, as well as full-sized, freestanding clawfoot tubs in the most grand compartments. All Rovos Rail journeys include off-train cultural, historical and safari excursions so guests can experience all the wonders that Southern Africa has to offer. The three-night Cape Town journey is a classic, but if you’re feeling extra adventurous and have a few more nights to spare, opt for the newer fifteen-day “Trail of Two Oceans” itinerary, originating in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, crossing Zambia, traversing a sliver of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and concluding in Lobito, Angola.

5. Belmond Andean Explorer, A Belmond Train, South America

Weaving through the Peruvian Andes at 14,000 feet, the Belmond Andean Explorer transports passengers between Arequipa and Cusco on one- and two-night journeys. There are just thirty-five cabins on board, each outfitted with alpaca wool blankets and handwoven fabrics for an authentic yet luxe feel. Two dining cars and two bar cars serve the whims of every guest with bites like alpaca tortellini and (of course) champagne. The train also makes excursions to Lake Titicaca , where guests can learn about local customs, visit Incan ruins, and take in breath-taking views.

4. British Pullman, A Belmond Train, England

The British Pullman ’s experience is magical no matter where you’re seated. Once you depart London , you’ll embark on a journey through the bucolic British countryside, touring cities and towns like Cambridge, York, and Canterbury along the way. The restored carriages date back to the 1920s and 1930s, so expect Art Deco touches, polished interiors, and classically prepared multi-course meals—this is the same train line that has served British royalty and government officials for years, after all.

3. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Europe

Year after year, the world’s most iconic locomotive continues to be a standard-setter in luxury. Of course, the decadent interiors are a fantasy of 1920’s Art Deco design, but it’s the impeccable service that keeps this train firmly ensconced in a class of its own. Bags are whisked off from the platform and magically reappear in your cabin, no glass ever runs empty, and the beds seem to make themselves anytime you step outside of your cabin. By day you can revel in the scenery of French countrysides and Swiss mountain scenes, and by night, the formal dress code feels anything but stuffy—in fact, playing dress up and making your way to the Champagne bar is, we think, one of the coolest experiences anyone could have on a train. For 2023, this over-the-top train is getting even more luxe updates, including eight new suites, two of which are original 1920s and 30s carriages carefully restored by expert French craftsmen and designers–so there’s no time like the present to book that bucket-list trip.

2. Palace on Wheels, India

India’s best-known train, the Palace on Wheels , offers a number of trips that range from a couple days to week-long excursions. Embarking from New Delhi through the Land of Kings, trips take you through the famed Pink City of Jaipur, in Rajasthan, where guests are greeted by majestic UNESCO sites like the Amer Fort as well as 16th century palaces. You can also visit Agra, home to the Taj Mahal and the perfect stop for a tour of some of the country's most iconic sites. The lure of rail travel has always had a romantic and adventurous air. In addition, train travel represents one of the most laidback ways of getting around, allowing you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the view. Some train rides are so spectacular – traversing the world’s most scenic destinations along snow-capped peaks or through orange-hued deserts – that they represent epic destinations in their own. Here’s my selection of the 10 most amazing train rides in the world.

10. DENALI STAR, ALASKA, USA

The Denali Star, the Alaska Railroad’s flagship train, links Anchorage to Fairbanks with stops in Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali Park. On this route, sparkling salmon streams and stands of birch and spruce come into view, while carpets of fireweed add dramatic purple to the landscape. Like the name implies, Denali National Park – one of the  most spectacular National Parks in the USA  – is really the star attraction of the Alaska Railroad’s Denali Star Route. You might get lucky and see a bear, moose or caribou. And look out for what native Alaskans call ‘The Great One’: the 20,156 feet (6,144 m) tall Mt. McKinley, the highest mountain peak in North America.

9. TRANZALPINE, NEW ZEALAND

The TranzAlpine train operates daily between Christchurch, Arthurs Pass and Greymouth – from the east coast to the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island. After departing Christchurch , the train crosses the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury plains and you can enjoy thrilling vistas over deep gorges as you travel along the ice-fed Waimakariri River. Then it traverses the mighty Southern Alps, where spectacular views of the chiseled alpine landscape will take your breath away at every turn. Excellent post! You’ve inspired a new trip! I’m looking into the Trans-Siberian Express. Happy New Year! 🙂

We did the Denali Star and the Tranzalpine and they were fine. And instead of the train from Cusco to Machu Picchu we took one from Urubamba to Machu Picchu instead. But we voted for the Glacier express because of the views and the fact its a dining experience!

I did part of the Trans-Siberian Railway from Irkutsk to Vladivostok!

What about the Orient Express from Singapore to Bangkok?

“Chepe” from Chihuahua to Los Mochis through Copper Canyon in Mexico is way better than the Ghan or Rovos Rail.

All the places mentioned in the list were outside India, I am hoping to cover them sometimes. I believe India also has some amazing train journeys like Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Although I hadn’t covered that yet but heard a lot about it.

I had the pleasure of making the trip from Puno to Cuzco in Peru. It takes 12 hours to travel through the Andes, reaching altitudes of 4,000 meters. It is not as luxurious as the one in Venice, despite being from the same company (Belmond), but it passes through the desert, through the mountains, by the lakes, through small towns, and the service is complete: breakfast, lunch, shows, classes on drinks and a lot of Latin American culture. I thought it was better than the Cuzco-Machu Pichu train. Congrats for this incredible list!!!

I love your videos and this article was interesting. However, as the earth has a circumference of 25k miles, 5 k is one FIFTH, not one third. You pulled a Columbus.

Maybe it offers a little less luxury than the ones you list, but the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway passes through the most amazing scenery.

And how could I forget Scotland’s West Highland Line?

Excellent ! But one certainly cannot ignore the famous Palace on Wheels, Blue mountain Train , Darjeeling Toy train, Colombo – Kandy express etc…ICE and TGV don’t find any mention here and so are the fastest bullet trains of Japan…

We rode the Rovos Rail from Pretoria to Capetown, This is a two night excursion. The train & staff are beautiful. The food was ok. The biggest issue with this train is the SA rail system. Its a big mess. 16 hours after leaving Pretoria, we moved 78 miles, knowing our journey is 1000 miles. Many side stops were cancelled which made a poor trip. I wouldn’t do it again.

The best thing about taking a train instead of a plane is you get to enjoy the scenic views along the way. You don’t have to hang around in airports for ages before and after your journey, and there’s no turbulence to deal with! Travelling by train is a lot more environmentally friendly than the air and road alternatives.

Jungfraubahn, Switzerland

The Jungfraubahn is one of Europe’s most popular train rides. It runs through the Bernese Alps, starting at Kleine Scheidegg and ending at Jungfraujoch – the highest train station in Europe at 3454 m above sea level! The Jungfraubahn is an ideal train journey for those seeking breath-taking views, but it might also be of interest to any history buffs, as it dates back more than a century! When you arrive at Jungfraujoch, you’ll find souvenir shops, a coffee shop, restaurants and Europe’s highest post office. For those who aren’t afraid of heights, you can go even higher by taking a lift up to the Sphinx observation deck which is 3,571 m above sea level. While you’re exploring S witzerland’s Alpine Region, you may as well indulge in some of the other adventures the region has to offer. With 365 days of snow per year, snow-related activities are an absolute must – snowball fight anyone? The Jungfraubahn operates hourly from 8:00am until mid-afternoon, every day, all year round. Tickets can be pricey, and most of the journey takes place inside tunnels that run through the Eiger mountain, but the spectacular views at the top will make it all worthwhile. Inca Rail, Machu Picchu

The train route from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu is considered one of the best train journeys in the world. The route is quite short (about 30 kilometres) and takes approximately one hour and 20 minutes with Inca Rail. It’s a direct train, and the earliest one leaves Ollantaytambo at 6:40 in the morning, arriving in Machu Picchu at 8:00am, giving you the whole day to explore. Along the route, you will see stunning landscapes of the Cusco mountain ranges, the Vilcanota River and traditional Andean villages. Japanese Bullet Trains

In Japan, the Japanese bullet trains are known as Shinkansen. They began operating in 1964, and are famous for being Japan’s first high-speed trains, reaching speeds of 320 kilometres per hour. They are also well known for being impeccably punctual! There are nine lines on the Shinkansen. The most popular is the Tokaido Shinkansen which travels from Tokyo to Osaka.

From Tokyo, you have the option to jump aboard the Hokkaido Shinkansen which will take you northbound to Hakodate. And from Osaka, you have the option to continue your travels southwest as far as Kagoshima using the Sanyo Shinkansen, followed by the Kyushu Shinkansen. If that sounds like a lot to take in all at once, have a look at the Shinkansen railway map , and it will all make perfect sense. Not only are the trains mega speedy and reliable, but during your journey, you’ll be gifted with incredible city and countryside views. If you decide to travel on the Tokaido Shinkansen, you’ll also get to see the lofty peak of Mount Fuji. To avoid queuing you can book tickets in advance. Ticket prices will vary depending on how far you wish to travel, however, children aged between zero and five can travel for free as long as they don’t occupy a separate seat.

Himalayan Queen, Kalka to Shimla, India

The Himalayan Queen from Kalka to Shimla is aptly named, as she is the queen of all train journeys, stretching 96km in length and taking five hours to complete. It’s also considered one of the most unique train journeys in the world! ‘Why?’, you may ask. For starters, it has been recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records for rising to the steepest altitude over a 96km distance.

Secondly, the train itself is something to behold due to its colourful appearance, and is often referred to as a “toy train”.

Thirdly, the train passes through 101 tunnels and travels over 82 bridges! Super impressive.

Lastly, the journey is incredibly picturesque with views of valleys, forests and yes, you guessed it, the Himalayas! The easiest and most convenient way to book a ticket for the train is online. You’ll be given the option to book a spot in either an AC coach, or a sleeper coach. However, unless you prefer sleeping to witnessing superb views, you should definitely book yourself a seat in the AC coach!

Rocky Mountaineer’s First Passage, Canada

The Rocky Mountaineer operates on three separate routes that each take you on a journey through the imposing Canadian Rockies. For those who didn’t know, the Rockies are a famous mountain range in western Canada. The best train route in Canada – and arguably one of the best train routes in the world – is The First Passage to the West. This route takes you between Banff and Vancouver, in either direction. There’s so much to see, which is complemented by an expert guide who will keep you informed every step of the way. You’ll be mesmerised by snow-capped mountains, winding rivers, dense forests and quaint log cabins. This is all before you take a trip through the famous spiral tunnels! There are various ticket options when travelling on the First Passage to the West route, but be aware that all options include at least one overnight stop off. Unlike some trains, the Rocky Mountaineer trains do not run overnight. This is in your best interest, so you don’t miss any of the spectacular views. You’ll thank them later. The shortest journey you can take is one way, with two days onboard, plus an overnight stay in Kamloops. However, there are roundtrip options that include four or five days if you fancy a little longer on board the train.

Trans-Siberian Express

The Trans-Siberian Express is a the longest railway line in the entire world – if that’s not impressive, then nothing is! If you’re not familiar, the Trans-Siberian Express is a Russian railway network designed for freight trains and passenger trains. It begins in Moscow (where it also connects with the European rail network), and ends in Vladivostock (where it connects with the Chinese rail network). In total, it travels an impressive distance of 9,289 kilometres! To travel the full distance takes approximately seven days. However, you can’t buy an open ticket. Each ticket comes with a specific date, car and berth number. You can’t just hop off at a station to go site seeing and then jump on a later train. If you want to do this kind of stop/start trip you would have to book separate tickets from each destination. There are multiple stop-offs along the way, but the breaks are quite short, lasting approximately 20 minutes. As you can imagine on such a lengthy journey, there will be plenty of spectacular views that include plenty of beautiful historical buildings, such as churches and monasteries. But, one of the best things about travelling on the Trans-Siberian Express is the people you meet. The strangers you’re sat next to at the beginning of the journey won’t be strangers by the end of it. The train runs the whole year round. It’s most popular throughout the summer months, making it easier (and cheaper) to get tickets during the winter months.

Trans-Mongolian Express

The Trans-Mongolian Express connects Russia and China. It splits off from the Trans-Siberian Railway at Zaudinskiy, and continues further south to cross the Russian-Mongolian border. The journey is beautiful, but also culturally and historically significant. Not only will you immerse yourself in various Russian customs whilst you mingle with the locals throughout your train journey, but you’ll also get to see the city where Russia’s line of tsars came to an abrupt and bloody end – how interesting! The same rules apply to the Trans-Mongolian Express as they do for the Trans-Siberian Express in that you can’t just hop on and off the train whenever you fancy. Once you’ve booked a bed, that’s where you’ll lay your head for the rest of the journey. Unless, you book separate tickets so you can stop off and see the sites. You can book them separately yourself which can be a bit of a chore, or alternatively, you can book a guided tour and all the leg work will be done for you. Tickets go on sale 45 days before the departure date, and it’s recommended you buy your tickets as close to this time as possible, especially if you are buying them during peak season (summer).

Also remember, that since you are crossing various borders, you will need to organise visas ahead of time for Russia, Mongolia and China!

West Highland Line, Scotland

Scotland is a stunner, which is why it isn’t surprising that many people consider the West Highland Line to be the best train journey in Europe, and one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. It takes around five and a half hours to complete, begins in Glasgow and ends in Mallaig (a cute fishing village) with multiple stop-offs along the way. The journey is famous mostly because it crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which is the bridge that the Hogwarts Express uses in Harry Potter! Aside from its links to Harry Potter, the most special thing about the West Highland Line is seeing stretches of land that have never been touched, and with no roads. You’ll get to see nature in all its glory, including many (and we mean many) fields of heather. Tickets for this journey are relatively inexpensive, especially if you book outside of peak season (winter time excluding Christmas and New Year). The average price for a one-way ticket is between $40 and $50. But, with a little bit of searching, you can find a one-way, off-peak ticket for as little as $17.

The Ghan, Australia

The Ghan will take you on a journey through Australia’s outback all the way from Darwin down to Adelaide, passing through places such as Katherine, Alice Springs (known as the Aboriginal Art capital of Australia) and Coober Pedy. Coober Pedy is well known for precious opals that are mined there, but it’s also famous because more than half of its inhabitants live underground. The views are obviously spectacular, but that’s not the only treat you’ll get on your three-day train journey. You’ll also enjoy all-inclusive meals and beverages, off-train experiences in towns along the way, and the choice between cruising through Nitmiluk Gorge’s natural wonders or experiencing authentic outback life at a huge cattle station. One thing you’ll need to factor in when planning your trip is that the train doesn’t run all year round, it only operates between April and October. The Bergen Railway

The Bergensbanen (the Bergen Railway) will take you on a train journey between Oslo and Bergen. The journey is approximately seven hours long, gliding through 180 tunnels and stopping at 22 stops. It’s considered one of the best train journeys in Europe, and holds the title of Northern Europe’s highest railway! There’s onboard catering and refreshments, but you won’t care much about those once you are spellbound by the views of Norway’s narrow fjords, luscious forests, and magnificent mountains. The recommended places to stop and explore on the journey from Oslo to Bergen are Flåmsbana (an historical train station), Trolltunga (a famous rock formation), and Vøringfossen (a cascading waterfall). Treat yourself to a Eurail Pass so you can get unlimited train rides for three, four, five, six or eight days. This way you won’t need to purchase several tickets throughout your trip. Just present your Eurail Pass at the train station and hop on the train. It’s the easiest most flexible way to travel around Norway!

These are just some of the best train journeys available in Europe and the world, but it is in no way exhaustive. There are so many incredible train journeys to embark upon, and this list will just get you started. There are some things you should remember when travelling anywhere by train.

• You should always remember to take an appropriate amount of snacks. If you accidentally take too many, I’m sure your temporary neighbours would be more than happy to help you out – especially on those super long journeys.
• Contact whatever travel company you are booking through to find out which side of the train has the best views! You don’t want to have to look to the opposite side of the train the whole time.
• Always wear comfortable clothes – long-distance travel is no place for fashion.
• Carry travel sick pills in your pocket – just to be on the safe side.

10 of the best train journeys in Europe, chosen by Lonely Planet

A new book on rail travel across the continent showcases gorgeous scenery, historic routes and adventures at a slower pace

R ailways in Europe are many things. With their grand stations, history and evocative destinations, they evoke a timelessness that is absent from the uniform experience of flying. In recent decades, high-speed services have complemented classic routes, while the demand for more climate-friendly travel has grown and new options have sprung up, including a recent wave of night trains.

Lonely Planet, which for nearly 50 years has championed a down-to-earth, connected style of travel, has produced a new Guide to Train Travel in Europe aimed at unlocking adventures by rail from any starting point on the continent. Here the authors pick fantastic journeys from the book.

Paris to Berlin – fast or slow

A well-established network of high-speed trains and a huge choice of slower options connects two of Europe’s great cities. A glorious three-country tour would allow you to head from Paris to Brussels, travelling on to Cologne via the space-age architecture of Liège-Guillemins station. Cologne’s cathedral is so close to the station you can hardly miss popping in before boarding an onward ICE German fast service to the capital, which takes less than five hours. To see more than the immediate surroundings of the station buildings in each city, book separate tickets for each leg at trainline.com , or add in a stop of a few hours or an overnight booking via Deutsche Bahn ( bahn.de ). A high-speed connection from Paris via Frankfurt is also possible.

Amsterdam to Vienna on the Nightjet

One of several recent additions to Europe’s sleeper train scene, the Nightjet service operated by Austrian Railways ( oebb.at ) departs every evening at 7pm or 7.30pm from Amsterdam. As you doze off, the train will trundle alongside the Rhine, passing Cologne and Koblenz, then continuing south-east through Germany and entering Austria at Passau. A 9.19am arrival in Vienna ensures time for a lie-in and breakfast. This train can easily be combined with the Eurostar service from London or a ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam , or from Harwich to Hoek van Holland .

Loop the loop in North Wales

Some of the world’s most beautiful narrow-gauge railways can be found in Wales and two of the best can be combined in a loop that takes in the mountains and coastal scenery of Snowdonia. Catch a service from Llandudno Junction – which has main line connections – down the Conwy valley to Blaenau Ffestiniog . Change for the celebrated Ffestiniog Railway , a distinctive steam-hauled service that winds 13 miles down to the coast at Porthmadog. Return via the sublime steam service of the Welsh Highland Railway under the summit of Snowdon to Caernarfon, where you can catch a bus to Bangor and main line services.

From Bastia to Ajaccio through the Corsican interior

The Chemins de Fer de la Corse ( Corsican Railways ) is a narrow-gauge railway centred on Ponte Leccia – from where three main lines head to Ajaccio, Bastia and Calvi, all providing incredible views of beautiful and rugged terrain. The route linking Ajaccio and Bastia is the longest and most celebrated, taking three and a half hours, so is best done with an overnight stop, rather than attempted as a day trip. Corsica is well served by ferries from mainland France such as Toulon, Marseille and Nice, opening up a tempting train-and-ferry route from the UK.

Dublin to Madrid by train and ferry

It is possible to head from Dublin direct to mainland Europe. A largely single-track line skirts the Irish Sea heading south as far as Wicklow before veering inland and stopping in the appealing county town of Wexford, set on the estuary of the River Slaney. It’s a short hop along the tracks from there to the port of Rosslare for the twice-weekly ferries to Bilbao , which take about 30 hours. Then it’s a five-hour rail journey on to Madrid. Recommended stops take in Burgos’s treasured cathedral, the former Spanish capital of Valladolid and Segovia’s Roman aqueduct and Alcázar fortress.

Venice to Palermo – across the water in Italy

Heading from top to toe in Italy, this dramatic journey’s potential stopping points need no introduction. Fast Frecciarossa trains connect Venice to the gastronomic centre of Bologna in 90 minutes, with Florence 40 minutes down the line. An hour and a half further on you’re in Rome. From here the south of Italy opens up. For one of Europe’s most unusual rail experiences take a train service all the way to Sicily. At Villa San Giovanni in Calabria, you and your carriage board a dedicated ferry to Messina, in Sicily, from where the hectic fun of Palermo is a slow-rolling four and a half hours’ ride away along the coast. There are several daily intercity and night services that run from the mainland, via the ferry, through to the Sicilian capital including sleepers direct from Milan, Genoa and Pisa.

From coast to coast, via a mountain high – Oslo to Bergen

A contender for Europe’s best train trip, the Bergen Line ( Bergensbanen ) thunders past southern Norway’s mountains and lakes between Oslo and Bergen, reaching 1,222m at Finse station, where a snowball fight is generally on offer. The trip takes nearly seven hours, which passes quickly in a blur of incredible scenery on a comfortable intercity service. There’s scope to do a longer version of this route taking the Norway in a Nutshell tour, which includes the Flåm Railway – possibly the world’s most scenic branch line – and a boat journey through Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord.

Paris to Barcelona on the slow train

These cities are linked by a fast train , but there’s a leisurely route south through France to the Pyrenees via Limoges, Toulouse and through magnificent rural and mountain scenery to Latour-de-Carol. While it’s possible to reach Latour-de-Carol by direct night train from Paris, you would miss the slowly unfolding views you can enjoy when doing this journey in daylight. From Latour-de-Carol a commuter line runs all the way to Barcelona and takes just over three hours. Possible stops along the way include fortified Ribes de Freser and Ripoll, home to an ancient monastery and a good starting point for hiking trails.

Budapest to Split on a sleeper

During the summer there’s a tempting night service between Hungary’s capital and the Adriatic. In recent years the train has left Budapest at midnight, getting into Split after lunch. En route it passes the Hungarian holiday playground of Lake Balaton and Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. Once on the Adriatic coast, buses head south to Dubrovnik, while ferries and catamarans radiate out to nearby islands.

Locarno to Domodossola through the Swiss Alps

Pretty much any journey in Switzerland promises jaw-dropping scenery, and on several routes trains run slowly specifically to show off the mountains, rivers and lakes that can be seen from the window. Travelling between Locarno in Switzerland to Domodossola in the Piedmont region of Italy, the Centovalli (Hundred Valleys) Railway is a short but scenic service past 52km of waterfalls, chestnut groves, church-topped villages, deep ravines and vineyards. Highlights include the Isorno Bridge near the village of Intragna and Intragna’s gorge.

Train travel is a charming and romantic way to observe stunning scenery racing right outside the window without the headache of handling navigation or booking accommodation. It maintains the nostalgic principle that the journey can be just as wondrous as the destination.

1. The Canadian Snow Train from Vancouver to Calgary

For Harry Potter fans, this train’s pass over the Glenfinnan Viaduct will look very familiar. In the second and third Harry Potter movies, the Hogwarts Express is filmed chugging over this very pass. Although there may not be a magical castle at the end of your journey, you can enjoy the very same stunning views of the Highlands on this train through Scotland. There will be plenty of stops to fully appreciate the many surrounding highlights, including tea at Inverlochy Castle and views of Loch Lomond. 4. Train around the ‘Devil’s Nose’ hairpin turns in Ecuador

To start, the rail sets off through the Andes’ ‘Avenue of Volcanoes’ past ancient villages and craggy mountains. 5. Cruise the US Pacific Coast from LA to Seattle

Los Angeles to Seattle 35 hours

Amtrak’s Coast Starlight train is renowned as one of the United State’s most beautiful rails. The tracks mostly hug the coastline for the first leg of the journey, making for some magnificent views of the Californian coast. Once in Northern California, the train begins to dip inland, making for just as impressive scenery of pine forests and snow-capped mountains. There are several notable stops including Sacramento and Portland.

6. Explore the Fjords of Norway

Bergen to Oslo 6.5 hours

This rail link between two of Norway’s greatest cities bypasses kilometres of land as gorgeous as it is inhospitable. Expect a slideshow of images ranging from deep fjords and snowy mountains, to green forests and cascading waterfalls. More than 100  tunnels were blasted through the seemingly impenetrable mountain gneiss (a high-grade metamorphic rock) to facilitate this journey . Although winter temperatures can be quite low and conditions harsh and snowy, you can enjoy all of this natural, rugged beauty from the warmth of your train car, with every modern comfort of food, beverage and wi-fi.

7. Anything Switzerland

No scenic train list would be complete without the mention of Switzerland: the queen of both scenery and trains. It’s hard to know where to start because there are simply so many beautiful mountains to explore and so many train stations to do it. Rail Europe offers several different Switzerland train packages depending on how much time (and money) you’re willing to invest. There’s a comprehensive 13-day Grand Tour available as well as a shorter Glacier Express which mostly focuses on the wonder of Zermatt.

8. An Oriental Jungle Journey

3 days, 2 nights Singapore to Bangkok

Eurail’s luxurious Eastern and Oriental express takes you deep through the lush jungles of Thailand and Malaysia. You’ll pass by farms, rich greenery and even have the opportunity to stop and tour a rice paddy. The train is outfitted with luxe dining cars and sleeping quarters making this trip both relaxing and adventurous. The luxuriant touches, like live piano music onboard before dinner, are what make all the difference.

The Napa Valley Wine Train

The Napa Valley Wine Train takes riders through the picturesque wine country northeast of the Bay Area. The route follows a rail line originally built in 1864. Visitors take a three-hour, 36-mile round-trip journey from downtown Napa to picturesque St. Helena and back. After boarding the train at the McKinstry Street Station, travel through the old industrial section of Napa, then continue through the scenic vineyards of Northern California. On some routes, you can even hop on and off the train along the way — and don't forget to plan an overnight stay at one of the incredible hotels in Napa Valley .

The Pacific Surfliner

Travel along the ocean on this Amtrak train that travels 351 miles through southern California. Start in San Diego and head north, stopping along the way in quaint ocean towns like Carpinteria, San Juan Capistrano, and Ventura. Be sure to leave some time to explore Santa Barbara , or head all the way to the end of the line at San Luis Obispo before looping back.

The Coast Starlight

Ride up the West Coast on Amtrak's Coast Starlight , which goes all the way from Los Angeles to Seattle, passing through Santa Barbara, the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, and Portland. The scenery along the way includes snow-covered peaks of the Cascade Range and Mount Shasta, forests and valleys, and long stretches of Pacific Ocean shoreline.

The Grand Canyon Railway

The Grand Canyon Railway , which dates back to 1901, offers riders a lesson in history from the Wild West and the opportunity to see the beautiful scenery in this iconic region. Kick back in the restored cars and listen to crews' incredible stories the crew as you ride the railway to the South Rim in a 65-mile trip across the high desert plateau.

Amtrak Cascades

Cross over the United States' northern border on Amtrak Cascades , stretching from Vancouver, Canada to Eugene, Oregon, passing through Portland and Seattle along the way. Stop in cities for day trips or overnight stays, and then hop back on a train to pass by Mount St. Helens and cross the Columbia River Gorge.

The White Pass Yukon Route

Ride this historic railway across the Yukon on this train trip that travels from Alaska into Canada. The 67.5-mile trip takes you between Skagway, Alaska, and Carcross, Canada, along the same route that the Klondike stampeders traveled more than 100 years ago. Stop along the way to tour the historic Bennett Station and museum.

The Rocky Mountaineer

The Rocky Mountaineer, which once only served Canada, bringing passengers from east to west with an exceptional display of scenery, now offers a U.S. route: Rockies to Red Rocks . The train steams through the American Southwest, traveling from Denver to Moab, Utah, with a stop in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The train runs from April to November.

The Maple Leaf Train

Take a train trip that starts at Niagara Falls and ends in New York City on Amtrak's Maple Leaf train . Along the way, you'll travel through the scenic Hudson River Valley, New York's wine country, and the gorges of the Finger Lakes region. While at Niagara Falls, stop for a cruise on The Hornblower to the rushing falls or take a Journey Behind the Falls tour, which brings you 150 feet below ground to tunnels that lead to observation spots at the foot of the Falls.

Instead, how about taking one of the best train rides in the USA? Gently saunter across the country, leaving you free to contemplate life, ponder the meaning of existence or just spend a few hours thinking about nothing and staring out of the window.

Riding on a train can be a romantic, nostalgic, and best of all leisurely way to see the country. Even a commuter train between major cities can be a step up from a drive, but these scenic train rides are more than that. Geared towards long-haul trips from coast to coast, or specifically designed for enjoying the scenery, these train routes will let you take in all the glorious views.

4.  The Empire Builder

There is only one word to describe this journey: epic. The Empire Builder runs daily between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, mirroring much of Lewis and Clark’s original expedition. It passes through a greatest-hits list of must-see sites, from the urban (St. Cloud and Minneapolis) to the great outdoors (big-sky country and Glacier National Park ). 5.  The Alaska Denali Star

6.  The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Various routes originate here, but the four-and-a-half-hour Nantahala Gorge excursion is a scenery-serving star, snaking along the forested Nantahala River and crossing the Fontana Lake by bridge. 7.  The Mount Washington Cog Railway

Like the Little Engine That Could, this antique train chugs daily up Mount Washington , depositing its passengers at the 6,288ft peak, the highest in the Northeast. A working museum of sorts (the track dates to 1852), the Cog has the elevated feel of a gondola, only you’re in a sturdy little train. 8.  The Napa Valley Wine Train

On this California Wine Country track, you can get intoxicated by the scenery alone: picture-perfect wineries and hills carpeted in lush rows of vines. But you’ll have a little help, what with all the vino you’ll be sipping alongside your onboard multicourse meal—both lunch and dinner are options. The roving restaurant is made up of a collection of vintage Pullman railcars complete with mahogany panels and brass hardware. So go ahead and soak it all up—you’re not behind the wheel, after all.

9.  The Hawaiian Railway Society

Train travel takes a turn for the tropical on this 90-minute jaunt across Oahu in an old sugar-cane hauler traveling at the lickety-split speed of 15 miles an hour. The ride shows you a rarely-seen version of Hawaii, filled with old sisal plantations and ghost towns. Time your trip for the second Sunday of the month and you can book a seat in the elegant 1900 parlor car that was the personal ride of Oahu Railway & Land Co. founder Mr. Dillingham. It's worth noting, however, that reservations are now required to ride the train.

10.  Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

One of the most scenic ways to experience one of the most scenic states; a ride on the Narrow Gauge Railroad isn’t merely photo fodder, but a full immersion into the wild, wild west. The train has been rolling between Durango and Silverton since 1882, when it was tasked with transporting silver and gold out of the San Juan Mountains. The 45.4-mile route runs in both directions along the Animas River, crisscrossing it five times, and passing by old stagecoach trails and long-deserted mining camps as it winds between 14,000ft high peaks.

11.  The Ethan Allen Express

While the destination is a major draw, getting there is half the fun on this five-and-a-half-hour journey from New York City to Vermont. You’ll cruise through the postcard-perfect towns of New York’s Hudson Valley; hit Saratoga Springs, as famous for its horse races as its hot springs and snake around Vermont’s fittingly named Green Mountains before landing in charming little-big city Rutland, with its historic downtown and one helluva farmers' market.

Amtrak Auto Train

If you’re traveling to a destination that requires use of a vehicle, Amtrak’s Auto Train allows you to pack it with you! It transports your car (or other recreational vehicles) as well as you and your family on a route from Washington, DC to Sanford, Florida.

Good Housekeeping’s Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab executive director, Lexi Sachs boarded the train with her family for a trip to Orlando, which she described as “just as fun of an experience for my two kids” as their trip to Disney World.

Sachs also pointed out that the train trip featured a range of seating options, from coach to bedrooms with pull down beds, lovely views of the East Coast, delicious dinner and breakfast, and allowed her to feel like she wasn’t losing a day of vacation due to travel. Plus, Amtrak offers priority offloading, “which means your car comes off first,” Sachs said, adding that “It was definitely worth it in my opinion!”

Night train routes have restarted, meaning that once again, you can go to sleep in one country and wake up in another. 

There are plenty of other reasons to travel by train. Some routes are incredibly beautiful. 

Plus, whether you are trundling through the Swiss Alps, taking a train trip around the coastline of Cornwall or venturing from Europe to Asia on the Trans-Siberian railway, each route is a completely unique experience.

Best Rail Journeys in Europe

One of the best things to do in Mallorca is to take the old fashioned 1920s train from Palma, the capital, to Soller.

This train harks back 100 years, when rail travel was very different.

However, its slow journey through the Tramuntana mountains makes it one of the most scenic things that you can do in the Balearics.

You need to buy your tickets at the Palma main station on the day you wish to travel.

You then board the train, and arrive, 90 minutes later, in the town of Soller.

This place is famous for its beautiful Cathedral and bountiful restaurants.

To complete your journey, hop on a tram to Port de Soller, which is one of Mallorca’s best unspoiled beaches.

UK: St Erth to St Ives Train

At 11 minutes, this is perhaps the shortest train journey on this list.

But it’s undoubtedly one of the most scenic. Hugging the Cornish Coastline from St Erth to St Ives, this route takes in perhaps the most tropical-feeling coastline in Britain.

After admiring the beaches, you’ll end up in the beautiful tourist town of St Ives, where there are plenty of things to do .

If you really enjoy the views, you could also walk back to St Erth along the coast path, which follows more or less the same route as the train and takes around an hour.

France and Spain: Paris to Barcelona TGV Train

If you love vibrant European cities, can’t decide between Paris and Barcelona and want to travel by train, the super-fast and comfortable TGV train between the two makes it easy to explore them.

Start your journey in Paris, the City of Light, where you’ll be dazzled by the French capital’s beautiful architecture, world-class art and amazing cuisine. 

When it’s time to depart, head to Gare de Lyon in the east of Paris. If you have time, stop for lunch at the spectacularly ornate Train Bleu restaurant first.

From Gare de Lyon, you’ll board a double-decker TGV train (the top deck seats have the best view).

The train will race across France, reaching speeds of over 300km/hr until it reaches the south.

Here, the slower speeds between stops like Montpelier and Perpignan allow you to see some of the gorgeous French countryside and coast. Then, you’ll cross the Pyrenees mountains and enter Spain.

Before the final destination of Barcelona Sants Railway Station, the train also stops in Girona.

The whole journey takes just over 6.5 hours and is made pleasant by comfortable seats, onboard wifi and a café carriage.

And when you reach your destination, there are many wonderful  things to do in Barcelona ,  including wandering the romantic Gothic Quarter, tasting tapas and marvelling at the bold and whimsical architecture of Gaudí, with sites like La Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló.

UK: The Caledonian Sleeper Train

The  Caledonian Sleeper train  from London Euston to Inverness in the Scottish Highlands is one of our favourite train journeys, not only in the UK but in Europe too.

Six days a week, the Caledonian Sleeper departs London in the late evening and winds its way through the English countryside before crossing into Scotland.

As the train travels further north, the landscape becomes wilder and more remote until eventually the next morning it pulls into the station at Inverness, capital of the Highlands.

There are various accommodation options, ranging from luxurious double rooms, ensuite rooms with twin bunk beds, classic rooms with twin bunk beds or, for those on a budget, comfortable seats.

For passengers booking sleeping accommodation, the Club car offers a seasonal Scottish menu which you can enjoy before retiring to your room.

The Club car is also a great place to meet and chat with fellow travellers making the trip to Scotland.

Waking up and peering out of the train window to see the Scottish countryside passing by is a magical experience, and the Caledonian Sleeper is the perfect way to enjoy views of Scotland’s dramatic and beautiful landscape.

Mr Henderson’s Railway

Mr Henderson’s Railway is the rail journey that connects Algeciras with the beautiful town of Ronda  in Andalucia.

The route was built in the early 1890s. What was once an arduous and dangerous journey on horseback is now a delightful 90-minute trip that services some of the traditional ‘pueblos blancos’ (white towns) that Andalucia is famous for. These include Jimena de la Frontera, Gaucin, Cortes de la Frontera and Jimera de Libar.

The journey starts in the port of Algeciras and, as you leave the industrial city behind and head towards La Almoraima, you’ll spot storks nesting on telegraph poles.

This part of the journey passes through the Parque Natural de los Alcornocales so keep a lookout for the cork oak trees after which the area is named.

You’ll be able to spot them easily by the bare lower trunks where the cork has been stripped.

From the comfort of your seat, you can enjoy the spectacular views unfolding as you pass through orange and avocado groves, as well as fields of sunflowers or poppies, depending on when you travel.

As the train crosses rivers and cuts through ravines via sixteen tunnels and twenty bridges, you’ll also see oleander trees growing in the valleys of the mountain peaks.

Pisa to Genoa

Some of the best scenic rail journeys in Europe are, surprisingly, just regional trains. On that is worth a mention is the route that travels from Pisa to Genoa. When journeying by high-speed train, this route takes about 1.5 hours.

Pisa is one of the most famous cities in Italy and Europe, fabled for its dramatic Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Besides that, it’s a student city and the atmosphere is incredible, with lots of restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Genoa, the capital of the Liguria region, is a much larger city than Pisa, and it is also a wonderful, yet much less visited place!

Because of this, you will feel more like a local when you go here. You can also find lots of local coffee bars in Genoa, and it is a great place to experience typical Ligurian food, such as pesto.

When travelling by train from Pisa to Genoa, you pass by the beautiful Cinque Terre. This is a collection of five colourful towns standing against the backdrop of the sea. 

This is one of the most scenic train rides in Italy because of the incredible Cinque Terre vistas!

The Bergen to Oslo line in Norway is one of Northern Europe’s great railway journeys.

It’s also one of the most scenic, travelling 308 miles through forests, across frozen mountain plateaus, beside wild rivers, along the shore of serene lakes and through nearly 200 tunnels.

The journey on the Bergen Railway takes around seven hours on a comfortable electric train.

Look out for the cute Finse station, the highest station on the line and the highest point of the Norwegian railway system.

At the isolated Myrdal station, the Flåm Railway branches off at a precarious gradient on its way down to the Aurlandsfjord and the magnificent Kjossfossen waterfall.

The Red Arrow, or  Krasnaya Strela in Russian, is a luxury overnight train trip running between Moscow  and St. Petersburg (and vice versa) every night.

It is the most comfortable and atmospheric sleeper train between these two smashing cities.

The historic train service started operating in 1931 and was initially reserved for only the communist party elite travelling between Moscow and Leningrad.

While the trains have been refurbished over the years to meet modern comfort and standards, the dark red carriages maintain their retro charm with wooden finishes and an air of nostalgia.

Today, everyday people like you and me can experience the best amenities, comfort and historic charm when travelling on the Red Arrow.

The train has sleeper cabins only, and travellers can choose between a first-class compartment with two berths or a second class compartment with four beds.

Bedding is provided, and the ticket also includes a breakfast delivered to your compartment before arrival the following day.

There is also a stylish restaurant car if you want to have a late dinner or get peckish at night.

Every night, the Red Arrow runs in each direction between Leningradsky Station in Moscow and Moscovsky Station in St. Petersburg. The journey takes about eight hours to cover the 600 odd kilometres.

Bükk Mountains

One of the most incredible European train journeys is the small diesel train from Miskolc in Hungary through the Bükk Mountains. 

It travels to Lillafüred – here, you can find some of the most exciting things to do in Miskolc including waterfalls, cave systems, gardens, and the tranquil Hámori Lake where you can float around in a wooden rowboat.

The train ride itself only takes about half an hour each way, but the views are spectacular.

It takes you out of the city, through thick forest that casually opens up to mesmerizing views of the valley, crossing bridges and negotiating narrow tunnels in the mountains. 

The conductor shuffles on the outside of the train checking tickets, but they must find shelter through the tunnels!

The Lillafüred forest train runs during summer and on the weekends in autumn – which is the absolute best time of the year to go due to the autumn colour show that nature provides.

To get to the train, take tram number one to Laev and buy tickets in the ticket office.

The train runs regularly throughout the day, but you should head there early so that you can get the most out of the day in Lillafüred before catching the train back.

Venice to Florence Train

Taking the  train from Venice to Florence  allows you to enjoy a leisurely breakfast in St Mark’s Square and be in Florence in time to watch the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo.

Isle of Man Steam Train

Taking a trip on a steam train is always a special adventure for young or old. The smell of the coal, the old-fashioned carriages and the certain clickety-clack during your journey are all so evocative.

The steam train railway in the Isle of Man is only 15.5 miles long. The three-foot narrow-gauge track is the longest narrow gauge steam line in Britain.

Running between the capital town, Douglas and the  town of Port Erin  in the south of the island, the line runs from the Spring through to the autumn. It is a popular attraction for tourists, but also for islanders travelling between villages.

During the summer, the sound of the whistle can be heard across the south as the white puffs of smoke float across the countryside. The journey takes around an hour and passes through fields, villages and along the coastline.

Built in 1874, the Isle of Man Steam Railway still has four original engines. The oldest engine, Caledonia, was built in 1885.  The carriages are beautifully maintained with vertically sliding windows which are lowered to open the doors.

You can book the 1905 Dining Car for dinner and sample some Manx fine dining in the Pullman style dining car.

Belgrade to Bar

The Belgrade-Bar Railway is one of the longest and most scenic train lines in the Balkans.

Spanning 476 kilometres (296 miles), it connects the Serbian capital with the small town of Bar on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast.

The line was constructed between 1958-1975 when Montenegro and Serbia were part of Yugoslavia.

It’s an absolutely spectacular ride, passing through more than 250 tunnels and over no fewer than 435 bridges and viaducts.

The mountain scenery is breathtaking, especially as you approach the highest point (1,000 metres above sea level) near the town of Kolašin.

But the highlight is riding over Skadar Lake, the largest lake in the Balkans and one of  the most beautiful places in Montenegro .

The train takes a narrow rail bridge, so you almost feel as if you’re skimming over the surface of the marshy waters.

All up, the journey from Belgrade to Bar takes 13 hours.

If you don’t have a full day, an alternative option is to board at Podgorica and ride down to Bar – it only takes an hour and it includes the beautiful lake portion of the ride.

Either way, it’s recommended to take the day train (rather than the overnight train) so you can soak up the beautiful views. Tickets cost around €25-€40.

Schafberg Cog Railway

The Schafberg Railway is a beautiful nostalgic red cog railway in Austria. It runs from St. Wolfgang at Lake Wolfgangsee to the top of the Schafberg Mountain.

There are only two stops, the first at Schafbergalpe at 1363 meters and the second at the top station at 1732 meters.

The railroad line is only 5.85 km long, but the ride has stunning scenery and provides a unique experience.

With the nostalgic red rack railroad, you drive up a height difference of 1188 meters. All in all, the ride takes about 35 minutes.

While driving up the mountain, you enjoy a great view of Lake Wolfgang and the surrounding mountains.

Once you reach the summit, a mountain panorama like something out of a travel magazine awaits you. From there you can see the many glittering lakes in Salzburg and Upper Austria.

The red Schafbergbahn looks back on a long history, as the railroad has been around for more than 130 years. Construction work began already in April 1892 and the railroad was opened as early as 1893.

Today, it is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the region and a must-see when travelling to Salzburg or Upper Austria.

A ride on this nostalgic steam locomotive, one of the oldest in the world, is an unforgettable experience!

Jacobite Train in Scotland 

The Jacobite Train ride in Scotland is one of the most scenic train journeys in Europe. This steam train is popularly known as the Hogwarts Express as it passes over the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, featured in the Harry Potter films.

This 84-mile round-trip train journey starts at  Fort William, the outdoor capital of the UK  and terminates at Mallaig – a fishing port.

It takes about 2 hours on each leg of the journey with around 1 hour 45 minutes to roam around in Mallaig.

Throughout the journey, you get to admire the stunning beauty of the rugged West Highlands Coast of Scotland.

While the train slows down at the 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct, gaze out to the Loch Shiel and soak up the beautiful scenery.

You can buy a 1st or 2nd class ticket for this train. First Class carriages are beautifully ornated and have a more comfortable seating arrangement.

You can pre-order an afternoon tea on this scenic train journey if you fancy it! On Standard Class carriage, you can buy sandwiches, crisps and hot and cold beverages from the trolley.

The Jacobite Train operates daily between April and October. The tickets sell out quite fast, so booking well in advance is recommended.

Glacier Express 

Switzerland is almost unrivalled when it comes to scenic train journeys in Europe, with the magnificent Swiss Alps making for the backdrop of many of the region’s most breathtaking journeys.

One of the more famous of these is the Glacier Express, a high-speed train line that traverses through Alpine scenery as it connects the ski resorts of Zermatt and St Moritz.

Also known as ‘the slowest fast train in the world’, due to the time it takes to navigate the mountains, valleys and peaks of the alps, this one-way journey takes roughly seven hours of travel between the two destinations with just one stop along the way at Chur.

You’ll find some of the most scenic spots in the 2nd half of the journey, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Landwasser Viaduct’ and the Rhine Gorge which marks the beginning of the River Rhine.

But Zermatt itself is possibly the biggest attraction of the journey. It’s set beneath the backdrop of the famed Matterhorn which is probably the most iconic peak in Switzerland, if not the world.

The Glacier Express is also included on the Interrail/Eurail and various regional passes however seat reservation is necessary as places will fill up quickly during peak season (in the Alps, this is winter and summer).

Swiss Railways are generally very clean and punctual, and the Glacier Express is no exception.

Bucharest to Chisinau Train

There’s an overnight train from Bucharest to  Chisinau, Moldova , that is possibly unlike any other train in Europe: partway through the journey, it stops, and the wheels get changed.

Romanian and Moldovan train tracks are of different widths, so trains cannot circulate between the two countries without this swap.

It’s quite the experience since passengers must stay in the cars while the switch takes place. It is an incredibly noisy affair of screeching metal!

The wagons are uncoupled from one another, and each is hydraulically lifted a meter or so into the air. One set of wheels is removed, rolled away, and replaced by another set, and the wagon is slowly lowered.

Not only is the swap unusual, but this is one of the few Soviet-era trains still on the rails in Europe. It’s not designed for luxury or, frankly, even comfort, with thin, hard bunks.

But the plastic flowers and crepe curtains hark back to a time long ago, as does the Cyrillic lettering on the doors and the samovar that sits at the end of each railway car.

It may not be a luxury ride, but it is like few others.

Overnight Train From Frankfurt to Copenhagen With a Surprise

Travelling overnight by train from Frankfurt, Germany, to Copenhagen, Denmark, is more of an adventure than you’ll expect! 

You’ll leave Frankfurt around midnight when it’s dark out, so you could try to get some sleep. It’s a challenge though since people get on and off at each stop, one of which is the large city of Hamburg. 

Somewhere between Hamburg and Copenhagen, your train will decide that it wants some time off and gets onto a “Ferry!”

Once the train gets on the ferry, you’ll need to disembark and climb to the upper decks of the boat. 

You might catch the sunrise as you cross the water, which is beautiful – albeit a bit strange, as you’ll have been expecting a train journey! 

After watching the sunrise, it’s time to get back on the train. Make a note of your cabin when you get off, so you know the right one to get back onto!

The train doesn’t wait around for that long, so make sure you jump up on time before the conductor alerts you that the train is leaving.

You’ll eventually pull into the glorious city of Copenhagen, home of the Little Mermaid and the Danish Royal Family.

Taking the Eurostar high-speed train from London to Paris might not be a scenic train ride, but it is surely the most convenient journey in Europe – and it’s a bucket-list check for all train travel fans. 

Hopping on a train in central London and getting off in central Paris just a bit over two hours later, that’s a Europe traveller’s dream coming true! 

But wait, a train that connects the UK with the European mainland? Exactly. The Eurostar runs through a tunnel under the seabed of the Channel, the strait that separates the UK from France and the rest of Europe. 

Since 1994, passengers can effortlessly visit two of the most splendid European cities in a wink of an eye. There’s also no need for tedious airport commuting as both train stations are located in the heart of the city.

Munich to Fussen

Easily one of the best train journeys in Europe is the ride from Munich to Fussen.

Most people popularly take this route by  taking a day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle from Munich , as it’s only a short few hours through Bavaria.

Along the two-hour train ride, you’ll be rewarded with some of the most breathtaking views of the Bavarian Alps.

If you’re lucky enough to be visiting around wintertime (or sometimes in March), there may even still be snow right out your train window.

You’ll be glued to the window for the whole ride because you won’t want to miss a thing!

The most popular way to take this train is to take the train right from Munich Central Station to Fussen.

You can purchase tickets at the train station, but if you’re visiting during a busy time of year like the summer, then you’ll want to secure yours online ahead of time.

Book for as early as possible, as during summer it gets very busy in the later morning and afternoon

Once you arrive in Fussen, your breath will truly be taken away as you explore the magical little town and its accompanying two castles.

Tips for taking trains in Europe

Some of these trains are very speedy and are actually quicker than flying. But others take a long time – and the journey is part of the experience. This is slow travel at its finest! 

Just make sure that you’ve packed plenty of essentials (food, entertainment and toiletries) for the journey – what exactly you’ll need depends on the length of the train journey!

Make sure that you book your train tickets in advance, particularly during peak season. Trains often either fill up or become extremely expensive during these seasons. 

When booking a rail trip, make sure that you are aware of whether you have booked direct trains or trains that require a change . Sometimes the change can be quick, so be prepared! 

Where to buy European train tickets

Usually, the best place to buy European train tickets is the rail service website for that country. 

In England, this is National Rail . French Railways use SNCF, Austrian Railways have ÖBB and Czech railways have cd.cz.

However, it can be a bit difficult to purchase train tickets i f you’re not a resident of that country and don’t speak the language. 

This is because the website might not accept foreign cards and the translation could be difficult. 

Instead, you could use a universal service like Trainline to book your tickets.

This is ultimately a train finder that you can use across the continent. 

You can book international trains and domestic journeys with Trainline . 

These convenient and scenic rail journeys are incredible ways to see Europe.

Ah, the allure of train trips . Adventurers and the eco-conscious are drawn to this glamorous, old-world mode of exploration for the impeccable slow-travel vibes, but there’s also something to be said about the perspective found onboard a train; you’re experiencing the landscape and scenery in a way that you can’t experience in any other mode of travel. A train trip often brings you where everyday roads cannot, whether it’s through untouched Malaysian jungles on the revamped Belmond Eastern and Oriental itineraries relaunching in 2024, or high into the Canadian Rockies with Rocky Mountaineer. For our annual Readers’ Choice Awards – which capture the travel experiences our readers love best, from hotels and airlines to cruises , islands , and luggage – we called on all of you to rank the best of the best rail journeys out there. Here, dear readers, is how the dice fell.

20. Inca Rail, South America

If you’re interested in taking a train to Machu Picchu (and unless you’re a mountain goat, we suggest you do), Inca Rail offers a level of convenience that is difficult to match – and it’s also worth mentioning that the first class service is priced more accessibly than other luxury operators servicing the same route. It’s been said that the Glacier Express is the slowest express in the world – it takes eight hours to traverse the 180-mile journey – but boy, do the views here invite a slow journey. Connecting the resort towns of Zermatt and Saint Moritz, the train provides an up-close perspective of some of this mountainous country’s most iconic natural features, including the Matterhorn, Piz Bernina, and the Rhine Gorge (dubbed Switzerland ’s Grand Canyon). Book into Excellence Class, and you’ll be served Champagne at your seat, followed by a six-course meal complete with wine pairings.

Take in every mile of the vast Canadian landscape from The Canadian , a special sleeper service offered by VIA Rail, the country’s national rail carrier. Keep in mind that this train is more about sightseeing from the cars than actually getting off and doing anything. But if you’re travelling in the comfort of Prestige Class –with your own private cabin, private washroom and built-in TV screen monitor with video selection – you’ll be perfectly content to take in the journey from the privacy of your very own picture window.

16. The Ghan, Australia

Completed in 1929, The Ghan runs through the heart of the Australian continent, from Adelaide in the south to Darwin in the north. It may have only started running its current route in 2004, but its history dates to the 19th century, its name harkening to the Afghan camel trainers and riders who first helped chart a course through the country’s interior. The three-day all-inclusive journey sees the train lilting its way through Australia’s Red Centre with diverse landscapes passing by. Travel through the expansive ridges of the MacDonnell Ranges, witness the awe-inspiring beauty of Simpsons Gap, and visit the opal town of Coober Pedy.

15. JR Kyushu 36+3, Japan

This train’s unusual name derives from Kyushu being the 36th-largest island in the world, and there being three key stakeholders on this journey: the passengers, the local community, and the rail company, JR Kyushu. It isn’t a sleeper train, instead offering a series of weeklong roster of one-day itineraries around the perimeter of Kyushu – a do one, do them all, or do as many as you like situation – but the journey is no less enriching for it. The inside feels like a ryokan, featuring immaculate woodwork made from local techniques, comfortable furniture, and a mix of private and communal spaces. It’s a gorgeous way to get off the beaten track on this gorgeous Japanese island, packing in a number of stops and towns into a single day of productive – yet comfortable – sightseeing.

14. Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train, Southeast Asia

Snaking its way between Singapore and Bangkok , the “ E&O ” is the stuff of train enthusiasts’ legends. Classical design lovers will love the polished wood-panelled corridors trimmed with silk, the old-world dining room replete with polished silver and white-linen covered tables, and the Bar Car, reminiscent of 1920s jazz clubs. Indeed, a ride on the E&O is something out of a bygone era of glamorous travel. Order a Singapore Sling at the bar, take it to the outdoor viewing platform as the Malaysian jungle rolls on by, and you just might forget what year we’re living in. (The E&O is still on a pandemic-era pause, unfortunately, but it is expected to be returning to service in 2024.)

13. Northern Belle, Europe

It’s all about the food – and the scenery, too, but mostly about the food – onboard this lovingly restored 1930s train , which zig-zags its way across the English, Scottish and Welsh countryside. Each of the journeys on offer are day trips, so they require less of a time (and money) commitment than other luxury trains. But what the Northern Belle lacks in length, she more than makes up for in quality: The meal services are exquisite, offering fine dining crafted mostly from UK suppliers, so you can enjoy classic British fare as the heaths, meadows, and dales roll on by.

12. The Maharajas' Express, India

There are luxury sleeper trains, and then there are luxury sleeper trains like the Maharaja’s Express , where a greeting of marigold garlands and rose petals showered at your feet kicks off the journey before your personal butler escorts you to your room. The Junior Suite rooms are surprisingly spacious, especially by train travel standards, and come with full-sized closets, comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and satellite TVs. Both of the onboard watering holes – the Safari Bar and the Raja Club – have plenty of chairs, comfy sofas, books and board games. Each day of the itinerary includes special opportunities to experience India through the train’s luxurious and singular perspective: like an early-morning champagne breakfast on a private hillside overlooking the Taj Mahal.

11. Royal Scotsman, A Belmond Train, Scotland

It’s about the journey, not the destination, right? Nowhere is train travel more indulgent – or convenient! – than on Belmond’s Royal Scotsman , which departs from and arrives at Edinburgh ’s Waverley Station. With only 40 guests onboard, the train circumnavigates the heart of the Scottish Highlands , passing such landmarks as the Kyle of Lochalsh and Cairngorms National Park. There’s even a dedicated spa carriage, where the specialists are trained to synchronise their motions with the natural lilts and tilts of the train. If that’s not luxury, we’re not sure what is.

10. Belmond Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train, South America

Named after the US explorer who supposedly “discovered” Machu Picchu in 1911, the Belmond Hiram Bingham train line is as grand as the man’s claims. The round-trip journey connects the city of Poroy (just west of Cusco) to the Lost City and Sacred Valley of Machu Picchu. The Belmond Hiram Bingham turns on the turn-of-the-20th-century charm, from gleaming polished wood and brass surfaces to lavish meals and accommodations, which offer plenty of space to stretch out: the perfect setting for viewing the mountains and rivers zooming past the window.

9. Golden Chariot, India

Experience a mix of Southern India’s greatest hits and lesser-explored destinations on board the iconic purple and gold Golden Chariot , which connects the Indian states of Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. All itineraries depart from Bengaluru, with options for both three-night and six-night journeys. A pioneer in luxury trains for three decades, Golden Eagle is perhaps best known for its Silk Road and Trans-Siberian routes, but the Danube Express unlocks an approach to Southern and Eastern Europe which is no less breathtaking and engaging. The “Castles of Transylvania” route from Istanbul to Budapest is particularly unique – spend all day learning about Vlad the Impaler’s history through guided tours, then spend all night luxuriating in the comfort of the bar car or in the privacy of your room. It’s a combination of Europe’s best cities and most dramatic natural landscapes that are hard to experience in one go any other way.

7. Rocky Mountaineer, North America

Travelling in a coach outfitted with picture windows and glass-dome ceilings means that a Rocky Mountaineer journey leaves no sight unseen as you traverse the dramatic scenery between Vancouver , British Columbia and Banff or Jasper, Alberta. Sample local Canadian beer, wine and snacks as you kick back and enjoy the ride. The staff’s friendly service and animated storytelling help bring the landscape to life. It’s personal touches like those which keep travellers coming away from this trip amply satisfied time and time again. Since it was founded in 1990, Rocky Mountaineer has transported more than two million guests, making it the largest privately-owned premium tourist train in the world.

6. Rovos Rail, Africa

This extravagant railway has been travelling throughout Africa for over thirty years. The experiences start before you even board – when departing from Pretoria, Rovos Rail travellers are granted exclusive access to a private lounge, where Champagne and canapés greet them – and a strict “no cellphone” rule is maintained for your own good. Enjoy the moment(s) provided by this line, which range from cosy digs to formal-attired evenings, as well as full-sized, freestanding clawfoot tubs in the grandest compartments. All Rovos Rail journeys include off-train cultural, historical and safari excursions so guests can experience all the wonders that Southern Africa has to offer. The three-night Cape Town journey is a classic, but if you’re feeling extra adventurous and have a few more nights to spare, opt for the newer fifteen-day “Trail of Two Oceans” itinerary, originating in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, crossing Zambia, traversing a sliver of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and concluding in Lobito, Angola.

5. Belmond Andean Explorer, A Belmond Train, South America

Weaving through the Peruvian Andes at 14,000 feet, the Belmond Andean Explorer transports passengers between Arequipa and Cusco on one- and two-night journeys. There are just thirty-five cabins on board, each outfitted with alpaca wool blankets and handwoven fabrics for an authentic yet luxe feel. Two dining cars and two bar cars serve the whims of every guest with bites like alpaca tortellini and (of course) Champagne. The train also makes excursions to Lake Titicaca, where guests can learn about local customs, visit Incan ruins, and take in breathtaking views.

4. British Pullman, A Belmond Train, England

The British Pullman ’s experience is magical no matter where you’re seated. Once you depart London , you’ll embark on a journey through the bucolic British countryside, touring cities and towns like Cambridge, York, and Canterbury along the way. The restored carriages date back to the 1920s and 1930s, so expect Art Deco touches, polished interiors, and classically prepared multi-course meals – this is the same train line that has served British royalty and government officials for years, after all.

3. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Europe

Year after year, the world’s most iconic locomotive continues to be a standard-setter in luxury. Of course, the decadent interiors are a fantasy of 1920s Art Deco design, but it’s the impeccable service that keeps this train firmly ensconced in a class of its own. Bags are whisked off from the platform and magically reappear in your cabin, no glass ever runs empty, and the beds seem to make themselves anytime you step outside of your cabin. By day you can revel in the scenery of the French countryside and Swiss mountain scenes, and by night, the formal dress code feels anything but stuffy – in fact, playing dress up and making your way to the Champagne bar is, we think, one of the coolest experiences anyone could have on a train. For 2023, this over-the-top train is getting even more luxe updates, including eight new suites, two of which are original 1920s and 30s carriages carefully restored by expert French craftsmen and designers – so there’s no time like the present to book that bucket-list trip.

2. Palace on Wheels, India

India’s best-known train, the Palace on Wheels , offers a number of trips that range from a couple of days to week-long excursions. Embarking from New Delhi through the Land of Kings, trips take you through the famed Pink City of Jaipur, in Rajasthan, where guests are greeted by majestic UNESCO sites like the Amer Fort as well as 16th-century palaces. You can also visit Agra, home to the Taj Mahal and the perfect stop for a tour of some of the country's most iconic sites. Along the way, enjoy regional cuisine in well-appointed, colourful carriages decked out in Indian textiles.

1. Seven Stars in Kyushu, Japan

Train lovers consider this opulent Japanese locomotive among the most spacious and comfortable of them all. Every inch of Seven Stars' Kyushu train – from the beds to the bathroom sinks, to the woodwork, to the porcelain dinner plates – is handmade by Japanese artisans, and the service is simply exquisite, with each journey limited to a positively intimate twenty passengers; but it’s not just about the onboard experience with Seven Stars. These four-day, three-night trips travel a circuit around the island of Kyushu, making stops at the region’s best shrines, onsens, porcelain studios, and more, so you truly feel like you’re exploring an authentic side of Japan , far away from the more obvious tourist tracks.

Riding in Style on Japanese Trains

Luxurious rail cars offer countryside views with a range of cultural itineraries and budgets.

Japan’s public transportation is known for its punctuality, efficiency and high-quality service, which means train travel is a great way to see the countryside and to experience Japanese culture — even if you’re squeezed into Tokyo’s crowded Yamanote line at rush hour or experiencing the popular high-speed Shinkansen bullet train .

But many savvy visitors crisscross the country in another way, using luxury trains that resemble five-star hotels on rails.

Luxury rail travel appeals to “someone who wants slow travel, the experience of excellent service in a contained environment, the finest dining, the most exquisite accommodation with private bathrooms,” Simon Pielow, co-founder of the Luxury Train Club , said by phone from Wiltshire County, England. “Things that many people have no idea is possible on anything other than a royal train.”

One trip chartered by his agency starts and ends at Hakata station in the city of Fukuoka, crossing the southern Japanese island of Kyushu on the Seven Stars , a seven-car luxury sleeper train. Journeys for either two days and one night (per person, double occupancy) range from 650,000 to 900,000 yen (about $4,292 to $5,942), or four days and three nights from ¥1.2 million to ¥1.6 million. (A single supplement would apply.)

“The train is very much sought-after because of the quality of the service on the train and its exclusivity,” Mr. Pielow said. “The people who come to us are desperate to travel on the train.”

With limited space, most would-be travelers need to apply several months in advance.

The Seven Stars, or Nanatsuboshi in Japanese, was named in part after the number of its carriages, in part after the seven prefectures of Kyushu: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki and Kagoshima, and for seven of the main attractions of the region, including its nature, food and hot springs. (Other stars have been known to ride these rails: The actress and producer Margot Robbie told Vogue last year that she and her husband had traveled to Japan in part to ride the Seven Stars.)

The train consists of a lounge car, a bar, a tatami-mat tearoom and a souvenir shop, as well as eight 108-square-foot private rooms and two larger suites, the biggest measuring 226 square feet.

Guests don’t necessarily have to spend all their time on board. They can also get off to participate in activities such as a guided walk along the Wakimoto coast, a seaside area of Kagoshima Prefecture, that lasts about an hour.

Meals can be consumed aboard the train or at restaurants along the way, and one night can be spent in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn.

So how does that work on a train? Some stops last an hour or more, enough time for guest excursions. But often, the train will keep rolling and pick up the guests at a later station.

But there also are other luxury trains in Japan. (Seven Stars and the Shiki-Shima, detailed below, can be booked from overseas. The others listed here must be booked from within Japan.)

The Twilight Express Mizukaze is an Art Deco-inspired sleeper train decorated from traditional crafts such as pottery and cut glass. Onboard entertainment includes a tea ceremony, live music and a signature cocktail from the bar. Five routes are offered, including a two-day, one night one-way trip and a three-day, two-night round trip. A suite includes a private balcony and bathroom with a tub at ¥875,000 for a shorter journey and ¥1.4 million for a longer one. A “royal” twin room with windows on both sides of the car was recently listed at ¥385,000 per person, double occupancy.

The Aru Ressha is known as a “dessert train” that runs between Hakata and Yufuin in Kyushu. The one-way, three-hour itinerary is just enough time to indulge in appetizer, fish, meat and dessert courses for ¥35,000 per person. The train is decorated with black and gold arabesques on the outside and baroque styling inside.

The Spacia X offers a more budget-minded luxury experience. This six-carriage train equipped with plush sofas and private lounges links Tokyo to Nikko, a picturesque city in Tochigi Prefecture. Simran Nagra, a 33-year-old Canadian actuary who lives in Tokyo, used the train for a two-hour, ¥3,840 trip in July to the hot springs resort of Kinugawa Onsen. “I was really excited to ride it because it’s a luxury train, but has very affordable pricing,” she said. “The windows are huge and hexagonal, to highlight the views,” she said, and the cafe car featured Nikko specialties including craft beer on tap, two types of sake and locally sourced coffee.

GranClass was the choice out of necessity for the Australian journalist Jake Sturmer, 35, and his wife, Rachel, in 2018. “We had just moved to Japan, some friends invited us on a trip, and the only seat available for us to travel was on GranClass,” he said, referring to the first-class cabin on the Shinkansen. “What a luxury it was,” he said, mentioning the large, cushy seats, the hot towels to cleanse hands and faces, and bento boxes they were served during a two-hour ride from Tokyo to Iiyama in Nagano Prefecture.

The Train Suite Shiki-Shima was created to contribute to the recovery from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northern Japan.

Riders can choose from four seasonal routes lasting from one to three nights and departing from Tokyo. One goes northward along the Sea of Japan to Hakodate and the Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park in Hokkaido Prefecture. Another is a wintertime itinerary through the snowy Tohoku region, where guests will get off the train to view traditional dancing and participate in woodwork or sewing workshops with local artisans. Prices range from ¥420,000 to ¥1.3 million per person, based on double occupancy in a sleeper car.

Shinobu Ohashi, 34, a paper-cutting artist who lives and works in Saitama, Japan, used the Shiki-Shima in December 2020 and April 2022. “I wanted to experience the design of the Shiki-Shima train, which I had seen on TV and in magazines, and the hospitality provided,” she wrote in an email.

The attention to detail impressed her: “When my companion complimented the garnishes that were offered only to the women on the dishes,” she said, “he was then also brought the same ones. We were both surprised.”

During one trip the cherry blossoms in Hakodate were in full bloom, she said: “We were taken to a cherry blossom viewing spot that was not on the trip schedule.”

The train has special meaning for her. “I am from the Tohoku region, from Fukushima Prefecture,” she said. “Even though a lot of time has passed since the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami in Japan, I believe that Shiki-Shima is a reassuring presence.”
