There’s a special time of year when the grim slog of February begins winding down and we start to see a glimmer of what spring might actually look like. We peek out of our dank burrows, blinking in the daylight-like mole-people, sniffing the air, puzzling over whatever that bright shiny disc in the sky might be.

We also remember that the Scandinavian summer isn’t all that far off. Many of us start killing idle time at work by daydreaming over summer vacation destinations, imagining ourselves in the sand, surrounded by other beautiful people, sipping on fruity frozen drinks as the surf crashes nearby.

But one place that probably flies under radar for lots of people when they’re thinking about possible summer vacation hot spots is Scandinavia.

While most people imagine exotic equatorial locales for the summer break, the long daylight hours of Scandinavian summer and the natural beauty of the larger Nordic world hold dozens of under-appreciated destinations.

1. Copenhagen

Lots of first-time visitors to Denmark are surprised to learn that one of the most popular Danish summer holiday destinations is staying close to home, right in the capital of Copenhagen .

Danish people who prefer a ‘staycation’ in Copenhagen appreciate how much the city has to offer in summer, not least of which is a more laid-back vibe without the frantic tourist onslaught you find in Southern European summer destinations.

You’re also not trapped in some smaller, strictly tourist-oriented town with overcrowded beaches, absurdly jacked-up prices, low-quality food, obnoxiously touristic clubs and bars and so forth. 

In Copenhagen you’ve got beaches and waterfront activities, but also all manner of world-class entertainment, restaurants, nightlife, and cultural attractions available to keep you busy. 

And if you do encounter a rainy day, you can take the kids to a museum as part of their Scandinavian summer holiday rather than being trapped in a hotel room or under the mildewed canvas of that creepy carnival on the outskirts of town.

When it’s sunny, however, the beaches around Copenhagen will certainly not be empty, as the weather there in summer is a treat. Copenhagen as a Scandinavian summer holiday destination is especially great for delicate, pasty types who tend to melt or go lobster-red straightaway when they hit the tropics. 

Temperatures average in the high 60s and low 70s ºF (19 to 23 ºC) with record highs getting up into the low 90s (up to 33 ºC) in July and August.

And there are beaches a-plenty in and around Copenhagen for enjoying a classic summer in Scandinavia, starting with the iconic Amager Strandpark — Amager Beach Park in English. 

This 2 km spit of land on the edge of Copenhagen is home to a total of 4.9 km of pristine beachfront where you can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, kayaking, snorkeling, and windsurfing just a short walk away from the city center.

Another great draw of doing a Danish summer holiday right in Copenhagen is you get to take advantage of Copenhagen’s blue-rated harbor while enjoying the system of four Copenhagen Harbor Baths . 

These unique, well-designed, and architecturally arresting sites are a popular draw for both tourists and locals, where you can swim, dive and just hang out on the deck and enjoy the outdoors. 

There’s one in Islands Brygge that boasts five pools that are up to seven meters of depth in places, and springboards of three and five meters for diving.

2. Bornholm Island

If you’re the type that prefers a quieter, more off-the-beaten track type of holiday, you might want to consider Bornholm Island for your next Nordic summer holiday. 

This gorgeous Danish summer holiday destination is located far from the mainland, off in the Baltic Sea due south of Sweden and just north of the very furthest western bit of Poland. 

But while that geographic description may not inspire confidence when it comes to thinking about possible summer holidays in Scandinavia, you might be surprised to hear about the summer fun on offer on Bornholm.  

For starters, Bornholm Island has tremendous beaches, the most famous of which is Dueodde Beach on the island’s southern tip. It’s an expansive stretch of white sand beach that stretches uninterrupted for nearly 30 kilometers (19 mi). 

The beach has some of the finest sand of any in the world, and is several hundred meters wide at some points, giving way to scrub pine and spruce. 

The sand forms dunes in places that reach 12 meters (39 feet) in height, and there are extensive boardwalks and paths as well, alongside water that remains calm and shallow out to about 100 meters (328 feet) from the shore.    

But in addition to Dueodde Beach and the dozens of other, smaller and often secret beaches that dot the coast of Bornholm, there are plenty of other outdoor activities available for visitors looking for Scandinavian summer adventures. 

The north coast of the island gives Bornholm one of its nicknames, Rock Island, and it is a hiker’s and climber’s delight. 

Granite cliff faces and rocky outcrops plunge into the sea, offering unbeatable Instagram opportunities, while the interior of the island is made up of sprawling forests and meadows ready to be explored, as well as a glacial lake called Hammersø.

It might seem weird to head north to find a suitable Scandinavian summer holiday, but the town of Skagen on the very northernmost tip of Denmark’s Jutland Peninsula has long been a destination of choice for Danes and foreign visitors alike to take in the Scandinavian summer rays.

Founded as a fishing village in the 12 th century, Skagen charts a record-setting 233 monthly hours of sunshine in July — even more than in Bornholm Island’s famously sunny Østerlars village. 

The town was made famous in the late 1800s by a group of Impressionist painters who reveled in the unique and long-lasting daylight that lingers over the water on summer evenings, and King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine entertained European monarchy there at their summer residence Klitgaarden, which was completed in 1914.

Today, visitors looking to experience a Danish summer holiday can enjoy visiting the northernmost terminus of Denmark at the spit of land that narrows to a point called Grenen. 

Here you can take in the clash of two oceans coming together, Kattegat (part of the Baltic Sea) and Skagerrak (an arm of the North Sea). 

It’s also a great place to see marine life of all kinds, including common seals who rest on the sand as well as porpoises plying the water.

You’ll also want to visit the Råbjerg Mile, Europe’s largest moving sand dune, a stretch of sand that is a kilometer long by a kilometer wide, and about 40 meters or 131 feet high. 

Each year the dune migrates about 15 meters (50 feet) toward Grenen, and is expected to cover the road to Skagen in the next century or two.

Best places to visit in Scandinavia in summer: Sweden

Just across the Øresund Bridge from Copenhagen lies one of Sweden’s jewels for summertime fun, Malmö , a city that is always high on the list of favorite Scandinavian summer holiday spots. 

Malmö is the third-largest city in Sweden, featuring cosmopolitan style and activities, but is nonetheless full of small-town charm and boasts a rocking outdoor-oriented scene. 

The waterfront bursts into life every spring and summer as hordes of young Swedes descend on the city’s five beach areas to enjoy long days of sunshine and temperatures averaging in the high 60s to mid-70s ºF (19 — 23 ºC) during the summer months, sometimes reaching as high as 93 ºF (34 ºC). 

You’ll want to check out Ribersoborg Beach, which is often referred to as the ‘Scandinavian Copacabana.’ This 2.5 kilometer-long (1.5 mi) beach is just a 20-minute walk from the city center, and has shallow, warm water fronted by fine white sand, perfect for a Swedish summer holiday.

Also a must-see is the Ribersborgs Kallbadhus , an open-air sea bathing facility dating back to 1898. The baths feature two separate sea bathing pools, one for men and one for women, and they are clothing-optional. 

You can also catch a massage, take a sauna, or enjoy fine dining right there on the waterfront.

But keep in mind, you’ll need to be clothed to enter the restaurant. Just saying.

Malmö, much like Copenhagen but on a smaller scale, is also not simply a limited beach destination when you’re considering a Scandinavian summer holiday. 

There is plenty to do in Malmö even after the sun goes down, including a vibrant nightlife in the recently redeveloped Västra Hamnen waterfront area, where you can see the iconic architectural wonder of the Turning Torso building. 

There’s also a charming old world city center with a myriad of Renaissance buildings, as well as the famous Malmöhus Castle overlooking the city, first built in 1434 and now home to an aquarium, several museums, and an outdoor complex where you could easily spend an entire day.

2. Nynäshamn

Just an hour’s train ride south of Stockholm you’ll find Nynäshamn, the southernmost point on Stockholm’s archipelago. 

The area offers vacationers interested in the genuine Nordic summer trip a oceanfront camping, kayaking, canoeing, bicycling, backpacking — as well as swimming and sunbathing of course.

There are plenty of family-style camping resorts (some might say ‘glamping,’ as many these ‘campgrounds’ are hardly rustic) where you can enjoy the comforts of home as well as a forested, seaside adventure. 

Popular camping resorts like First Camp Nickstabadet-Nynäshamn —which, in fairness, do feature accommodations ranging from simple tent sites to caravan parking to cabins—also feature waterslides, organized activities for kids, and all kinds of other bells and whistles. 

But one great thing about Scandinavian summer holidays in general and camping in Sweden in particular is that the country adheres to the code of ‘everyman’s right,’ the notion that anywhere that isn’t built up, inhabited, or cultivated is fair game for hikers and campers. 

Just outside of  Nynäshamn there are nature preserves and tons of open areas for camping and hiking, and you could wander pretty far to find yourself a tranquil spot far from the madding crowd.

Nynäshamn also is the doorway to a number of destinations even further afield. If you want to take a ferry to Latvia or even Poland, more adventures await as you push the boundaries of your Swedish summer holiday to encompass parts of other nearby nations.

You can’t really talk about Swedish summer holidays or even the larger world of Nordic summer holidays without mentioning Gotland, Sweden’s largest island. 

A ferry ride over from the mainland (Nynäshamn is one of the many places you can set out from) will get you to one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Scandinavian world. 

In 2012 some 1.5 million people took a ferry to Gotland from Sweden, while over 350,000 flew there for their Scandinavian summer vacation. 

If you take the ferry, you’ll arrive at Visby, a charming Medieval town surrounded by 13th-century walls with winding cobblestone streets taking you past well-preserved period houses and buildings including St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. Nicholas’ Church, both also dating to the 13 th century. 

The 3.5 km walk to circumnavigate the walls yields stunning views of the town and the sea as well.

Visitors can also enjoy the long Sudersand Beach of fine white sand on Faro, a smaller island just off the northern tip of Gotland. 

But, be aware that this beach in particular is so majestic and spectacular that it is often thought to be the most popular beach destination not only for Scandinavian summer holiday makers, but in the entire Baltic region. 

Alternatively, check out pretty much anywhere along Gotland’s east coast between Sjaustrehammaren and Ljugarn where the pine forest backs right up against the sand for gorgeous beaches that aren’t quite so overrun. 

Although those with delicate sensibilities be warned: just north of Ljugarn there is also a nude beach area. We all know those Scandinavians love to get naked… 

Best places to visit in Scandinavia in summer: Norway

1. Svalbard

Okay, so not every Scandinavian summer holiday absolutely needs to involve sun and sand and nudity, right? Here’s a Norwegian summer holidays destination that is not only off the beaten track, but will give you stories for a lifetime. 

The Svalbard archipelago is about as far north into Norway as one can go, as it’s a group of islands about halfway between the Norwegian mainland and the North Pole. It’s admittedly not a typical summer holiday-maker’s type of destination…

… But, for the outdoor adventurer who loves seeing wildlife in its natural habitat, as well as rugged, epic landscapes and seascapes, Svalbard could prove a once-in-a-lifetime Scandinavian summer tourist destination.

You’ll get the opportunity to spend some time outdoors in the balmy summer temperatures averaging between 39 and 43 ºF (4 to 6 ºC) observing an unmatched array of wildlife that stop off here on their migratory routes. 

The animals you can observe range from a variety of whale species, dolphins, walruses, seals, and almost uncountable bird types. 

Artificial Intelligence – AI in Scandinavia and the Future of the Technology

Other residents of the islands include the arctic fox, the Svalbard reindeer and polar bears, which are a huge tourist draw for passing cruise ships and are closely protected, but which make for a uniquely Norwegian summer holiday. 

And if you get tired of living the wildlife life, there is also the university town of Longyearbyen which has a reputation for being a fun place to visit as well. Keep in mind that since it’s outside the Schengen area, Svalbard is a great place to buy duty-free goods as well!

From the extreme north of Norway, let’s shake off the cold and head to the extreme south, the town of Mandal. This town, the southernmost town in the entire country, is a favorite of Norwegian holiday makers. 

Norwegian families flock to the cabins the line the Mandal River every summer, and enjoy the seaside, forests, and the quaint, charming town of Mandal.

You’ll find great beaches here as well, including but not limited to the massive Sjosanden Beach, a broad and lengthy yellow-sand beach that’s just a short walk outside the city center, where you’ll find dunes, tons of space, and unbeatable views of the light over the water. 

There’s also a campground adjacent to the beach and nearby forest, and climbing rocks as well. 

But you aren’t limited to just the ever-popular Sjosanden Beach, as just to the south you can easily walk to seven more quiet and peaceful oceanfront beaches that are perched on the edge of the natural area, Furundulen. 

There is an extensive network of footpaths winding through the trees and along the water, as well as playgrounds, barbecue pits, and more.

The heart of the 15,000-population town of Mandal really comes alive in summertime too, with outdoor concerts every Wednesday evening throughout the summer, where locals mingle with tourists and chat over a beer while enjoying every genre of music imaginable. 

You can also catch a 4-day shellfish festival in August and much more, including a small but lively restaurant scene and nightlife.

It would be silly to have a list of possible Norwegian summer holiday trip ideas that didn’t include at least one fjord adventure , and the town of Valldal is a great way to see a whole lot at once. 

This small valley punches above its weight in terms of scenery, including wild rivers that drop down from the high mountain peaks into the fjords, stunning cliff and rock faces, lush forests, and more. 

It’s famously a favorite destination of kayakers, rafters, hikers, and rock-climbers alike. 

Situated just north of the Norddalsfjorden , which is a branch off the massive Storfjorden, lies Valldal, aka Sylte, a charming village that serves as a great jumping-off point for exploring the fjord country. 

The village is home to a tourist-favorite church that dates back to pre-1400s, as well as stunning views and a well-developed tourist industry that will help you get out on the water, up on the cliff-sides, or wherever else you want to go outdoor exploring in the immediate area.

Once you’ve had your fill nearby the town, head down the winding Trollstigen or Troll’s Road, part of the Norwegian Scenic Route. 

Driving along it you can reach the Geiranger Fjord and from there catch a ferry to the famed Seven Sisters waterfall — another option is to take a ferry directly from Valldal, but each offers its own set of epic vistas. 

The Seven Sisters is one of the most-photographed sites in all of fjord country. Legend has it that the seven cascades that make up the falls dance and play while the Suitor Falls across the fjord try to flirt with them.

Best places to visit in Scandinavia in summer: Iceland

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Okay, okay, it’s true: Iceland and Finland aren’t technically part of Scandinavia . 

But let’s face it: there’s sufficient cultural, geographic and historical similarities to justify adding at least a couple of—strictly speaking—Nordic destinations to our list. 

One such spot for a Nordic holiday getaway that should jump to the top of everyone’s list is Iceland’s Blue Lagoon. 

It’s a geothermal pool formed by the hot water vented from the ground near a lava flow that is then used to power the geothermal power plant Svartsengi. It in turn powers many of Iceland’s homes and businesses, and then deposits its—clean, chemical-free—used water in pools like Blue Lagoon. 

The high mineral content of the water has been enjoyed by millions of visitors, who rub their skin with the silica-heavy white mud that accretes on the bottom. It’s this silica that also gives the water its milky blue hue. 

There are various rather pricey hotels along the water that provide private pool areas, but the main pool is accessible to the public for a fee. In addition to the lagoon itself, you can sometimes see the Northern Lights from here, and there are nearby attractions like ATV tours, lava caving trips, hiking and more. 

Best of all, the lagoon is on the way from Reykjavik to the airport, so make sure you book your trip there in advance and you’ll also be able to catch a bus directly to catch a very relaxing flight afterward!

Best places to visit in Scandinavia in summer: Finland

Tampere, Finland

It wouldn’t be fair to touch on an Iceland destination for our Nordic summer holiday spots without mentioning one in Finland as well. 

Gorgeous Tampere may not be the biggest or most famous city in Finland, but for outdoor adventurers looking for a Scandinavian summer holiday, it’s practically ideal. 

It’s perched on a spit of land between two lakes, and since the lakes have a difference of some 59 feet in altitude, a spectacular set of rapids, the Tammerkoski, courses through the middle of the city non-stop.

The city itself is home to a strong working-class tradition, with writers, musicians and modern YouTubers all hailing from there, lending a down-to-earth and eclectic vibe to the culture, restaurants, bars and nightlife. 

There is tremendous history and modern culture alike to be discovered in Tampere, and you can easily spend a week just exploring the city . 

Nearby you’ll also find plenty of recreation on the lakes, including boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and more. You can also catch a boat to Viikinsaari Island for hiking, picnicking and more.

Probably the most important service I received was Cecilia's prompt answers to all my questions. My requests were handled expeditiously. As for the accommodations, they ranged from very good to excellent. Of particular note is the fact that Cecilia had to react quickly to hotel employees' strike at one of the hotels. Here’s one of our suggestions for a Scandinavia itinerary in June:

Day 1 - Arrive in Stockholm, Sweden Fly into Stockholm Arlanda Airport and head to your hotel in the city centre. Spend some time walking through Gamla Stan (the Old Town). Enjoy a fika (a Swedish coffee break) with a nice pastry at one of the local cafés in this medieval neighbourhood.

Day 2 - The highlights of Stockholm Spend a full day in the Swedish capital, discovering the city’s attractions and districts. You could join a sightseeing tour to see the best of Stockholm in a day, taking you to must-see spots like the City Hall, Royal Palace and trendy Södermalm quarter.

Or, a ferry ride will whisk you off to the island of Djurgården, home to the Nordic Museum and Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum. Meanwhile, a day trip to the Stockholm Archipelago means you could swim in the Baltic Sea and hike through forests.

Day 3 - Fly to Copenhagen, Denmark Head to Stockholm Airport after breakfast and board a plane to Copenhagen. Once in Denmark’s capital, take a walk down the city’s popular Strøget street for a bite to eat, or go check out the fun and games at the old fashioned Tivoli Gardens amusement park.

Day 4 - Discover Copenhagen Soak up the charms of Copenhagen today, either on your own or as part of a guided tour. You might want to visit Rosenborg Castle, the Botanical Garden and Torvehallerne food market.

We also recommend hopping on a boat tour to see Christiansborg Palace, the Royal Danish Opera House and the colourful Christianshavn Canal from the water.

Day 5 - Overnight cruise to Oslo, Norway Ahead of your journey to Oslo, spend the day enjoying more of Copenhagen. Why not make like the bicycle-happy Danes and rent a bike?

You could check out the exquisite Amalienborg Palace, as well as the colourful Nyhavn harbour and the Little Mermaid statue. Later, head to the port for your cruise to Oslo.

Day 6 - Explore Norway’s capital city After your ship arrives early in the morning, the whole day is yours to roam Oslo. Take a walk to the bustling Aker Brygge waterfront area and visit the Akershus Fortress. Or, head to the Bygdøy peninsula to explore historic museums.

If you love art, make sure to take a walk through the delightful Vigeland Sculpture Park. Don’t miss a visit to Oslo City Hall if you want to see where the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held.

Day 7 - Scenic train journey to Flåm This morning, go to Oslo Central Station to begin your Norway in a Nutshell® experience – one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. Look out the window to see picturesque landscapes and quaint villages like Gol and Geilo.

Change at Myrdal to board the Flåm Railway for one of the top highlights of the entire trip: a 900-metre (half-mile) descent to the picturesque village of Flåm, where you’ll stay for the night.

Day 8 - Norwegian fjord cruise Prepare to witness breathtaking Norwegian scenery today, as you hop on a cruise that takes you through the fjords. You’ll be able to admire the glittering waters, cascading falls and forested mountains of Sognefjord, passing through Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord. Afterwards, it’s an exciting coach and train ride to Bergen.

Day 9 - Discover Bergen Known as the gateway to the fjords , Bergen is Norway’s charming second city with plenty of its own attractions to uncover. You can visit the medieval houses of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bryggen, and take the funicular up Mount Fløyen for panoramic views over the city and fjords.

Day 10 - Depart from Bergen, Norway Fly back home from Bergen-Flesland Airport, having enjoyed 10 days in beautiful Scandinavia.

What other ideas are there for a Scandinavia tour in June?

There are plenty more places to explore in this region. For example, you could opt for a Scandinavia and Russia cruise in June, stopping off at diverse but equally fascinating cities. Chill Out at Sweden's Ice Hotel

Sweden's famous Ice Hotel isn't for the faint of heart. This popular attraction opened in the small town of Jukkasjärvi in the late 1980s with just one room. Now, the hotel has 70 deluxe suites that are built each year with ice blocks from a nearby river. As for the temperatures, rooms are maintained between 17 and 23 degrees Fahrenheit. (Don't worry, you'll sleep in a heavy-duty sleeping bag topped with blankets from reindeer skin.)

Spring is lovely with blooming flowers, and Summer with long sunny days where you can swim and visit one of the many music festivals. Fall is also great for hiking trips, and in Winter, you can visit some of the many ski resorts,  enjoy indoor “hygge” by the fire, and visit the Christmas markets in Copenhagen.

But the best time to visit depends on what you wish to see and do. In summer, the weather is warmer and more pleasant, and daylight lasts more than 16 hours.

Summer in the Nordic countries

Summer,   June, July and August are great times to visit the Nordic countries and the high season in the Nordics. You have long days; in summer, the Sun comes up around 4:00 and sets around 22:30 in most Scandinavia.

In the Arctic region, the sun is above the horizon in the summer months, and you can experience the Midnight Sun  where the sun never goes below the horizon.

For travellers, June, July, and August are the most popular months for visiting Nordic countries. Many tourists choose these months because of the pleasant temperatures and the sunny weather.

If you prefer milder weather and less crowded tourist attractions, May  or September's shoulder seasons present an appealing alternative. You can get lucky to have good weather for several days in those months.

When to visit Denmark

You can visit  Denmark  in any four seasons, but many tourists visit the country in the spring and the summer.

Especially in May, when the days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, and there are lots of outdoor activities to do, and all you'll need is a light jacket. If June isn't an option, July, August and September are good alternatives because the weather is still good and not so rainy.

There are lots of outdoor events in Denmark during those months. However, the summer months of July and August are also the time of year in Denmark when you experience the most tourist crowds. The country is also perfect for a  biking holiday  because of the temperatures and the infrastructure. If you want to go to Denmark to avoid the high travel season, May and September can be viable alternatives when to go to Denmark, and the weather is still mild enough for outdoor activities. Before May and after September is the lower travel time of the year in Denmark, and prices of flights to Denmark and local hotels are lower.

When to Visit Sweden

Summer runs from June to August, and Spring from March to May.

Travelling to Sweden in June is an excellent idea to experience outdoor events like Midsummer's Eve and other activities. The weather is quite warm,  and you have long hours of daylight. In the northern part of the Nordic region, you find a unique natural phenomenon called the Midnight Sun, and here the sun is not going down under the horizon.

Also, May and July are great alternatives. It can be rainy in May and June, but July is warmer and drier. July and August can also be slightly more expensive than the earlier summer months, so June is still your best bet for when to go to Sweden.

It is highly recommended in late August and September if you're a budget traveller trying to decide when to go to Sweden. The flights to Sweden will be cheaper than during the high season, along with local hotel prices, and during that time, the weather in Sweden is still mild enough for outdoor attractions, although some sights begin to close during September.

When to visit Norway

Most travellers go to Norway in Spring and Summer, especially in June, July and August. That's the time of the Midnight Sun, so you'll get very long days in southern Norway or even sunshine around the clock in northern Norway , and there are many things to do and places to go in Norway. June and July are also the time for Norway's highest tourism levels, so while all sights and attractions will be open, you will see some tourist crowds. So when should you go to Norway to avoid the high travel season? May and September are lovely alternatives to go to Norway and get lower rates - and the weather in Norway will still be mild enough for outdoor activities and sightseeing. For travellers, the cheapest month in Norway is October. The summer is over, but the ski season hasn't started yet. October can be cold, and many outdoor attractions have begun to close.

When to visit finland.

May through September offer the mildest weather and the highest travel volume. Especially early summer - May and June are pleasant in Finland . When you pick when to go to Finland, remember that the Finnish summer holidays are in July, which equals higher prices. After that, August and September have more annual rainfall. In June, the weather in Finland will be warm, outdoor activities and events are commonplace, and you can witness the Midnight Sun. At the other end of the spectrum are the winter travellers. Finland, in the winter months, offers many kinds of activities. If you want to see the Northern Lights, aim for December. The warmest months, June, July, and August, are the best to visit Iceland.

Summer in Iceland is peak season. Use Reykjavík as the base for explorations or stay in one of many locations around the countryside. You'll have the slightest chance of rain during June, and the weather in Iceland stays mild until late August. Come mid-September, though, almost all of the summer activities will be closed until May of the following year. When to visit Greenland

Greenland falls within the Arctic Circle . In winter, in the Polar darkness, the people there don’t see the sun for three months. This necessarily means no light reaches there in the Arctic region in Greenland . No one enjoys as much sunlight during the summer as Greenland. Even though the summer is precisely hot, per se, it’s enough to give you a good tan on your face. Greenland shares its season cycle with the Arctic.

There are two weather cycles in Greenland, and summer and winter are so different that your experience will vary greatly, in combination with the season when you visit Greenland. Do you go to Greenland to see the Northern Lights and want to try dog-sledging - October-March is the time to go there.

Bergen, Norway

Tucked deep among the fjords on Norway’s southern coast, Bergen looks like the quintessential Nordic fishing village, despite the fact that it’s the country’s second largest city. Colorful wooden houses, many of which have been converted to hip restaurants and shops, line the docks of Bryggen, a 12th-century wharf that was once dominated by the Hanseatic League and has since become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See what the nets haul in daily at the storied fish market before taking in the panoramic vistas aboard the Fløibanen Funicular up Fløyen Mountain. But the real reason to come here are the fjords themselves. While hikers are welcome, day cruises can take you close enough to see them without breaking a sweat.

Ring Road, Iceland

Often called the Land of Fire and Ice, Iceland has some of the most varied—and awe-inspiring—terrain in the world. The best way to see it: On a leisurely car ride along the Ring Road, a rambling byway that circles the island and connects you to the country’s best sites, including Reynisfjara, a black-sand beach that’s home to resident colonies of puffins, and the spectacular Goðafoss waterfall. But don’t just stick to the pavement. Detour to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula to hike an active volcano and glacier, or take to the waters of the Blue Lagoon, the famous geothermal spa that’s nestled within a lava field.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The former home of Hans Christian Andersen is as charming as a scene from one of his children’s books. Your social following will thank you for snapping the colorful buildings that line the canal at Nyhavn, and there’s plenty more to fill your feed, including the 19th-century amusement park at Tivoli Gardens , the shops on Strøget, and the museum at Amalienborg , the winter palace of the Danish royal family. Gothenburg, Sweden

The hometown of suburban-status marker Volvo hardly seems like a place for cutting-edge food, art, and design, but that’s just what you’ll find in Sweden’s often overlooked second city. For context on the onetime industrial hub’s renaissance, begin your urban wanderings on the cobblestoned streets of Haga, a 17th-century neighborhood that epitomizes Gothenburg’s café culture—don’t miss the giant cinnamon buns at Café Husaren —and whose quaint wooden houses are now filled with cute shops of every kind. Make your way back to city center to explore the waterfront restaurants (the inventive tasting menus at Bhoga have earned it a Michelin star) and see rotating photography exhibitions at the Gothenburg Museum of Art .

Tromsø, Norway

Some 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Tromsø, Norway offers some of the best views of the Northern Lights in all of Scandinavia. There’s no better time to see them than at the end of January, when the former fur trapping center hosts its annual music festival. What to do when your eyes aren’t trained skyward? Embark on an expedition to spot orcas and humpbacks near Whale Island. Nature lovers will find stiff competition in the remote wilderness of Swedish Lapland, where you can see the aurora borealis on horseback after an afternoon of dog sledding or a woodland jaunt aboard a reindeer-driven sleigh. You’ll be hard pressed to find more atmospheric accommodations than the Icehotel, which is rebuilt each year using frozen blocks from the Torne River.

Bornholm, Denmark

Scandinavia isn’t a place synonymous with beaches, but there are good ones where you can work on your tan and your swimming form (cold waters, be damned) on the tiny Baltic Sea island of Bornholm, just a 35-minute flight from Copenhagen. Known as Denmark’s sunniest locale, it’s a well-kept secret among Danes who come for the laid-back farm-to-table restaurants, picture-perfect fishing villages, and serene forest landscapes. Book a room at the minimal yet stylish Nordlandet hotel, a simple seaside inn whose jewel is an elegant Nordic dining room overlooking the sea, then set off to discover the island’s striking round churches, which date back to 1150.

Stockholm, Sweden

There’s more to Sweden than IKEA and ABBA. Hi... Home too soon and reflecting on how great our trip with Intrepid was. We usually make our own arrangements when we travel. Though older, we do NOT enjoy the big bus experience. However, as we slip into our 70s, it's tougher to arrange all complexities of a trip. Since we are explorers at heart, we thought we'd try a small group trip. So...signed onto Scandinavia Explorer with Intrepid. How wonderful to be so independent yet not have to make all the arrangements. Hrvoje, our guide, was a walking encyclopedia about the sites and both fun and informative. And enjoyed meeting an Aussie lady to share our experiences. A very relaxed sort of trip. We will book another. So 5 stars!!! A little disappointed about the bike ride cancellation, but soon realized that street construction and other circumstances were the cause. One tip, however. On the small cruise part of our trip, we ended up in separate rooms. Not our guide's fault (he was the best), but perhaps with prior forewarning, we could've paid a little supplement to be in the same room even with separate single beds. We've been all around the world yet found ourselves wide-eyed with discoveries on this trip. Small trips like this allow one to meet the locals, too. Can't believe it's over. Absolute North

Everything we expected to see, we did. Everything on the travelling-index : is followed up. The hotel were finy, some even excellent. Just the first one at Copenhagen, Moxby was sleeping and room oké, but the breakfast was very poor. We need to wait too long to get anything. And the time was running oout on our first day to start..

The last dinner was terrible, there was another group there they emptied the small buffet, mushroom soup, white rice, potatoes, beef meat balls salad some tomato thing apple dessert, white bread and butter, a terrible last impression of cosmo tour if it wasn't for tunde tour director I think I probably would never book with cosmos again just a average tour with highlights last night in Denmark dinner was also a joke skip all dinners and give your clients a choice, of local eateries.

The whole tour was amazing. i didn't realise what there was in the 3 countries we visited. The scenery was out if this world. Gregs knowledge of the area was very good and he had some good ideas for place to go on our free time. Zultan the driver was so good (i'm a driver myself) at negotiating the twist and turns of the roads. Not easy with a bus!!! Goerge our relief driver was also very good. This is the best tour I have been one (my 1st insight tour) I have been with 2 other companies in the past and this tour , driver and tour leader were out front by a very long margin.

Biggest problem that we had was a guide because of her heavy Spanish accent, it was hard to understand her sometimes. Also, the information that she presented to us was not sufficient or interesting. She was repetitive, searching for words. Accommodations were good except the last hotel in Stockholm. It was outside of the city, shabby, old . I would use a different tour company next time.

A Taste of Scandinavia

Nikolai was FANTASTIC!!!! He was a great tour leader. The tour took us to many places and he educated us well. However, just a few negative comments. The hotels were not satisfactory ....I am used to better hotels when I travel. Carrying my luggage throughout the tour was very burdensome. I am an older person, and although I am in great shape, I did not want to be responsible for carrying my luggage everywhere. There was an 89 year old man on our trip. He had a real hard time catching up. I usually go on escorted tours where my luggage, and everything else, is handled by the guides, not by me. I loved the places that wer went to and overall I would suggest people take Tourradar and Intrepid if they don't mind doing some of the labor involved.

5 Day - Snaefellsnes, South Coast and Northern Lights

Nice tour. Highly recommend it! One of the 5 days we had a very nice toyr guide, Sindri Gunnarsson! Was the best day of the tour. He explained to the group history of Iceland, fun facts, taught us a master class in finance and banking of Iceland, but also about the music and entertainment. A complete day! Iceland is a beautiful country and definitely not overrated. Accommodations quite nice. Only improvement would be breakfasts that were included into the price. Quite poor selection in my opinion.

Venture north of the Arctic Circle in winter and you have a decent chance of seeing this phenomenon on a clear night. But which Scandinavian country has the best views? And how can you increase your chances of a sighting?

What are the northern lights?

Also called the aurora borealis, or the polar lights, the northern lights are a natural display of coloured light caused by solar winds.

Particles in the upper atmosphere are hit by high energy electrons causing the lights in the sky to swirl around. If you’re in the right part of Scandinavia and the conditions are just perfect, you’ll enjoy an unforgettable show.

When is the best time to see the northern lights?

Statistically the most solar activity takes place in the springtime (March and April) and the autumn (September and October).

But of course, it needs to be dark to see the lights, so you’ll have probably have a better chance of seeing them during the long dark nights from November to February.

And you often get better views when it’s cold because the skies tend to be clearer, with less cloud cover. So to a certain extent, the further north you are in winter, the better the views tend to be.

The lights are visible right across the northern reaches of Scandinavia, in a wide arc that stretches from western Norway, right through Sweden and into northern Finland.

There’s no ‘best place’ to see them, but each country has its own charms, as well as unique tours and places to stay which can add a new twist to the aurora-spotting experience.

Just bear in mind that you almost certainly won’t be able to see the northern lights in the big Scandinavian capitals like Stockholm and Oslo. Denmark is also too far south to offer any decent light shows.

Norway is a great place to visit if you want to see and photograph the northern lights, thanks to the nation’s spectacular coastal scenery – on this front, at least, no other Scandinavian nation can really compete.

One obvious downside is the high cost of living in Norway . Even basics can like food and accommodation can add up quickly, so it pays to plan ahead – check out these tips for saving money in Norway !

The chances of seeing much activity in the country’s capital Oslo are quite small, so you’ll have to head up to northern Norway. Anywhere north of Bodø in winter is usually a good bet.

The city of Tromsø is very much geared up for northern lights viewing with plenty of tours and activities available to help you get the best glimpses of the natural phenomenon.

Of course, you can head out on your own, but standing around in the cold, dark night waiting for the lights to appear can be a bore. It’s way more fun when you’re in a group and have got an experienced guide with you who knows what to look out for.

In Tromsø you can do anything from a simple chasing the northern lights tour , to a northern lights photography tour – or even a northern lights and husky ride trip .

But, if you want to view the phenomenon in more comfort, head further north to Alta, and the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel . The hotel runs a northern lights tour, or you can simply settle yourself into the outdoor hot tub and wait for the show to begin in the dark skies above.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that you’ll see that you’ll see the lights wherever you go – unless you’re on one of the Hurtigruten boat cruises .

You can take a cruise any time between October and March on these iconic boats which ply the Norwegian coastline. They are so certain the lights will appear that they’ll give you a free 6 or 7-day trip if they don’t!

Just like in Norway, you have to head a long way north to get the best views of the light shows in Sweden.

The scenery in Sweden doesn’t always compete with the beauty of Norway’s fjords , but that’s not to say it’s ugly – Sweden’s rivers, forests and frozen mountains are also extremely photogenic. Sweden is also much cheaper than Norway, so it’s a better option if you want to see the northern lights on a budget.

Anywhere north of Jokkmokk is a good bet, with the lights appearing regularly throughout the winter.

Abisko is easily the best base for spotting the northern lights , since it lies in a rain shadow so the skies are often cloud-free. It’s around 90km from the nearest city and is surrounded by a protected nature reserve, so there’s very little light pollution.

Abisko’s Aurora Sky Station claims to be the best place in the world to watch the lights.

With an outdoor terrace, full-length windows, look-out tower and expert guides and equipment on site, some form of nocturnal light activity can be seen here most nights. There’s good, affordable accommodation at the nearby STF hostel and there are some fantastic guided tours on offer in both Kiruna and Abisko.

Finnish Lapland is also an incredible place to head for some good norther lights spotting. In clear skies, light activity can be seen here more-or-less every other night between late September and early March.

Just on the edge of the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi makes for a natural base, with plenty of light-spotting tours available . How about combining viewing the lights with those most Finnish of activities – a forest sauna and some ice-fishing ?

But, probably the best way to watch the northern lights is from the comfort of your own bed. In recent years, hotels with glass igloos have become popular around Finland.

Up in the north of Finland, near Saariselkä, the Northern Lights Village has glass-roofed cabins where you can stay warm and cosy while viewing the lights from your bed – so lie back and watch the show.

Beautiful Bergen and beyond, Norway

Bergen is often referred to as “the city between seven mountains” – which encapsulates its blend of culture and nature. Lose yourself in its charming old town, fish markets, galleries and museums, then hike or take a funicular up Mount Fløyen for views and pine forest trekking. Bergen is a great base from which to day trip. Using direct buses/trains, you can go to Gudvangen to kayak across the fjord to your own secluded beach for a picnic lunch, or pop to Voss for its water sports, hiking and farm-to-fork food ( Store Ringheim is my top pick). Car-free calm on Utö, Sweden

Utö in the south-western part of the Stockholm archipelago might just be “utöpia”. We packed a tent and went for a weekend adventure from Stockholm, taking the bus and the Line 21 ferry. Life slows on the car-free island and you discover summer houses, wild strawberries, secluded beaches and swimming spots. We camped at a waterside site , with a view of the south harbour and Mysingen, which has its own beach. Hjo in Sweden is on the edge of Lake Vättern and provides the setting holiday dreams are made of. Kayaking around Vaxholm, Sweden

We’ve toured Norway, Denmark and Sweden over the last few summers, cycling and using public transport. We love the freedom it brings, and the opportunities it provides to explore cities and their outdoor pursuits. One of our favourites was travelling by commuter boat from Stockholm to the island of Vaxholm, which takes about an hour. It has lovely shops, huge ice-creams and picturesque cafes. We found a small jetty and beach that was popular with swimmers and kayakers. On the day we visited we’d already booked a kayak using Kayakomat , paying online and releasing the kayak and all the equipment needed using a pin code; it cost 398 Swedish krona (£30) for two hours in a two-seater kayak and was a great way to explore the island. Ribe, one of Denmark’s oldest towns, has a Viking Centre where you can get an authentic feel of the life of families from more than 1,000 years ago. The town is also a great place for exploring the marine wonders of the Wadden Sea national park and climbing the nearby Marsk Tower to look over the expansive marshes. Boat house stay, Norway

My partner and I stayed in a traditional boat house (on Airbnb) in an area called Åsnes Finnskog in Norway, near the border with Sweden. We took a canoe out on Lake Vermundsjøen, cooked over an open fire, sunbathed on the pebbly beach and swam to a nearby island – without coming across anyone over the two nights we stayed. I found a perfect beach in Denmark

In summer, I’ve found Denmark’s sandy beaches to be peaceful and free of sunbeds and hotels blocking off swathes of them. They’re often protected by sand dunes, making them sheltered from winds and perfect for swimming, sunbathing and having picnics of local rye bread, cheese and fresh herring. Hornbæk beach was my favourite of the many I tried last summer: it’s just 90 minutes by public transport from Copenhagen. A morning drink at Albis cafe will set you up for the day. At one with nature hiking in northern Sweden

My friends thought I was crazy when I told them I was going to the Arctic Circle last summer instead of Ibiza, but my visit to the Sarek national park in northern Sweden was brilliant. I joined a community of hikers and wild campers who were just wandering around, totally at one with each other and nature, happy to share tips, resources, food and life stories as we walked, and then lit camp fires to keep warm in the long summer nights. In a landscape of mountains, forests and streams, there were reindeers, elks, wolverines and kind-hearted Sami people. Much better than getting burnt and drunk on a Spanish island. Bill

Winning tip: Nature under midnight skies on the Åland Islands

The Swedish-speaking but Finnish Åland Islands, in the gulf between Turku and Stockholm, encompass so much of the culture and beauty of Scandinavia. There is idyllic farmland, charming villages and banks of wild lupins in impressionist colours. We cycled to Kastelholm Castle, which has served as a palace and a prison, went birding on Lågskär island and visited the museum ship in Mariehamn harbour. Gorgeous local cheeses washed down with the cold-pressed juice of fresh berries were a highlight, as were midsummer rituals such as the saunas. Hold up! Have you thought about the importance of travel insurance?

Remember this:  anything can happen. Travel is fun, but your health is more important; thus, I always, always, always recommend getting insured during the duration of your trip. I have benefitted from having one multiple times, and it has been covered for thousands of euros!

The latest one is not necessarily “health” related – it was during the peak of the unspeakable terrible C that consumed the world. Honningsvag, Norway

What are my favorite travel must-haves?

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of travel, and there are five items that I always carry with me regardless of where I go and how long the trip is. Here are my five travel must-haves!

• Warm packable jacket  – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
• Transparent toiletry bag  – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
• Kindle Paperwhite  – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
• Powerbank  – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
• Travel Adapter  – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.

The place is a peninsula with a hook-shaped, which is also the home to the largest cod-fishing fleet in Norway. This town in Norway is attractive and lively and has various lavishing seafood.

Best places to visit in june 2024.

School's out and summer is in full swing, which means one thing – it's time for a vacation. While some like to take their time and enjoy the season before they jet off, June is a surprisingly good time to book a getaway. In some destinations, crowds won't arrive until July, leaving room for discounts on flights and hotels. We took into account these factors as well as weather, seasonal events (including Pride celebrations ) and a variety of location types – from city centers to serene beaches – to come up with the best places to visit in June. Glacier National Park

Grand teton national park, amalfi coast, serengeti national park, canary islands.

If you can accept not being able to access certain parts of this Montana park (such as the Going-to-the-Sun Road), you could save loads and avoid crowds if you visit in June. During this time, Glacier National Park's lodging options have lower rates and more availability than the rest of the summer months. High temps in the 70s mean you'll stay comfortable while hiking (many of the lower-elevation trails are open in June if you don't mind a little mud) or rafting down the Flathead River. For a more leisurely way of exploring the park, go boating on Lake McDonald.

June in Florence brings long hours of daylight ideal for taking in the city's famed art and architecture while the Tuscan sun shines. When temperatures get too warm (think: average highs in the 80s), there are plenty of must-see museums, like the Uffizi Gallery, that offer a cool respite. While you may have to contend with more crowds in the summer high season (make those restaurant and hotel reservations in advance), June makes up for this with a robust festival calendar. Sample the region's wine during Mostra del Chianti in the nearby town of Montespertoli and celebrate Florence's patron saint during Festa di San Giovanni.

With an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, there is really no wrong time to visit Lake Tahoe. But there is a case to be made for visiting this destination in June, which ushers in the carefree summer season with everything from farmers markets to free summer concerts to annual beer festivals. The water will likely be too cold for swimming, but you'll find stunning views from a boat tour or on a scenic drive, bike or hike around the largest alpine lake in North America. As an added bonus, with average temperatures in the mid-60s and 70s, you'll stay comfortable on any excursion.

Grand Teton National Park comes to life in June: wildflowers are in peak bloom, snow is nearly all melted and animals and their young are on the move. Not to mention, average daytime temperatures hover in the 70s (though evenings and mornings are still brisk), which makes for near-perfect weather as you hike the Jenny Lake Loop and other popular trails surrounding the snow-capped mountains. Just be prepared to share, as June is one of the most popular months to visit this park.

June is the Goldilocks summer month on the Amalfi Coast, when temperatures are warm enough for the beaches, but not yet scorching, and the season's crowds are just beginning to arrive. When you're not lounging on the pebbled shorelines, explore the region's 13 towns tucked along the Tyrrhenian Sea, hike the Path of the Gods or meander through the gardens at Villa Rufolo or Villa Cimbrone (still in bloom before the sweltering temperatures descend). What's more, June marks the start of festival season, so you'll catch events like the Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics and the Festival of Sant'Antonio.

Though Edinburgh is known for its moody atmosphere, the Scottish city's stone facades and green hills perk up in the summer. With comfortable temps in the mid-60s and 17-hour days, you'll have plenty of time to tour the imposing Edinburgh Castle, hike up to Arthur's Seat or peruse the four gardens of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. You can also mingle with locals at a bevy of markets and fairs and seasonal happenings like Pride Edinburgh. For a glimpse of Scotland's lush countryside, take a short bus ride to Pentland Hills Regional Park, a perfect place to spend a summer day.

Watching the Great Migration in Serengeti National Park is an unforgettable safari experience , and June is typically a great time to see it (though, like most things in the wild, timing is never guaranteed).
