So you want to visit Hawaii? Understandable — it's a great place.

However, unless you're booking a spontaneous flight deal (and those do happen), you'll probably want to plan to ensure you're traveling at the best time for your particular dream trip.

Whether you're looking for dry, idyllic weather, perfect whale watching season, or the cheapest time to book a Hawaiian hotel room, consider this your definitive guide to planning a perfect trip to Hawaii.

The best time to visit Hawaii for good weather

Generally, the best weather in Hawaii is in June, July and September. This is when travelers can expect the least amount of rain along with warmer water temperatures.

However, Hawaii isn't a true four seasons state and it has pretty great weather year-round. So if traveling during June, July or September isn't in the cards, you're still probably fine as there's really no bad time to go. I just got back from a trip in mid-November and the weather was great. It was warm enough to swim in the ocean without being too hot lying in the sun.

Hawaii has a tropical climate, with temperatures generally staying between 83 and 88 degrees all year long.

You should check local weather, though, as conditions in some parts of the Islands are wetter than others depending on if you are staying on the windward or leeward sides of each island.

Kauai, for instance, gets a lot of rain on the northern side of the island compared to the southern side (which does lead to some pretty great rainbows). Even if the forecast calls for rain, however, the rain tends to come in short bursts and doesn't last long.

Best time to visit Hawaii to avoid crowds

The peak tourism season in Hawaii typically starts in the middle of December and continues until the end of March or mid-April, depending on the timing of spring break for major parts of the U.S.

The less busy season stretches from the middle of April until mid-June, when most schools are out of the summer and then resumes from September until crowds tick up before the holidays. Shoulder season is a great time to visit. The huge crowds are gone, prices are lower and you can have more of the beach to yourself. Even in busy spots like Honolulu, you'll have more breathing room after Labor Day and before Thanksgiving.

July and August, while not considered Hawaii's busiest season, still tend to draw decent crowds — and are especially popular with vacationing families.

Cheapest months to visit Hawaii

Traveling to Hawaii is usually priciest during peak season, so if you want to save, wait until the off-peak or shoulder seasons.

The shoulder seasons in Hawaii run from late March through the beginning of May, and from September until Thanksgiving. However, spring break and the beginning of September can yield high traffic and higher prices, too, so look carefully before booking.

Historical data from the travel booking site Skyscanner shows airfare is at its most expensive during the winter, specifically in January. At this time of year, average long-haul flight prices can exceed $1,400.

However, prices can plummet during the shoulder seasons or times that cushion peak periods, such as late November and early March. This past September, we saw a fare war develop with prices as low as $62 one-way to Hawaii. This is especially true if you are coming from the western half of the U.S. Keep an eye on TPG deal alerts , where we regularly cover sales to Hawaii.

We looked at historical data, and generally, the most expensive month for a room in Honolulu is January, with the least expensive month being April. Analysts tell TPG it's best to book as early as possible for the best rates in the off-season. We're told that many tourists are booking as close in as a week before arrival, and the best deals will be had as far out as possible. It pays to plan ahead.

Of course, you may have more flexibility when you cash in your points and miles — though hotel award rates tend to shift with peak and off-peak seasons, too. Also, award flight availability is often directly tied to demand.

Best time to travel to Hawaii to surf

Only four of the islands in the Hawaiian archipelago are suitable for surfing year-round: Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. As for when and where you'd like to surf, well, that depends entirely on your skill level.

The waves follow a somewhat consistent schedule. In the winter, for example, surfers can find serious swells off an island's north coast, while the south coast experiences calmer seas. During the summer, the opposite is true.

So, for advanced surfers, the winter season, or ho'oilo, which runs from mid-November to early February, is when you should look out for big wave surfing competitions on the North Shore of Oahu, also known as the "Seven Mile Miracle."

On the Big Island, surf enthusiasts should check out La'aloa Bay and Honoli'i Beach Park.

For novice surfers, you'll want to spend more time on the island's southern coasts in the winter. In Maui, beaches in Kaanapali, Lahaina and Kihei deliver just-right waves for beginners to get their feet wet.

Best time for whale watching in Hawaii

The best time to go whale watching

Whales migrate to Hawaii in pods of roughly 1,000 between late December and early April, making Maui and the Kohala Coast of the Big Island two of the best places on Earth to spot the giants. Note that sometimes whales show up as early as November, so you could get lucky if you travel during shoulder season.

The best time to see turtles

If you're interested in spotting Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), they're plentiful year-round in Maui, on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kaui and on Oahu. One of the most famous spots for turtle-spotting is on Ho'okipa Beach in Maui.

Visit in the summer, during nesting season, to increase your odds. You'll even find sea turtles on some hotel grounds. I was able to get up close and personal with turtles on a trip to the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island. At that hotel, they hang out in the hotel's lagoon.

Many vendors sell turtle snorkeling adventures and I've had great luck with two separate snorkeling trips in Hawaii.

A warning, though: please don't get too close. People are asked to give the turtles at least ten feet of space and never touch them. Human touch can spread bacteria to turtles, which can lead to starvation for the creature. Remember that green sea turtles are listed as an endangered species.

Hawaii has five of the seven species of sea turtles in the world, but green sea turtles are the most common.

When to visit Hawaii for events

Summer events.

In the summer, on the third weekend of July, visitors can attend the Prince Lot Hula Festival, Hawaii's largest non-competitive hula event.

Fall events

The Hawaii Food & Wine Festival is a major draw for foodies, featuring an extensive lineup of dinners, parties, cooking classes and more taking place in October and November of 2024 on three different islands – Hawaii, Maui and Oahu.

Hotel prices are lower in these shoulder months, too. For example, a basic room at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa on the Big Island can skyrocket to over $930 per night during the peak winter travel season, but that same room might go for just $443 in October.

Many Hawaiian hotels add a nightly resort fee from about $25 to $50 on top of the room rate, so make sure you budget accordingly.

But because the destination is so popular, considering the effects of overtourism is key to timing your visit.

Over the years, the tourism industry in Hawaii has swelled to comprise a quarter of the state’s economy . As such, it suffered financially during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic , when tourism was limited due to travel restrictions; at its worst, the state’s unemployment rate soared from 3% to 22% . “There really isn’t an off-season here,” says Stedman. “I was raised on the idea that there’s only two seasons in Hawaii: ‘summer’s here’ and ‘summer’s coming.’” But there are definitely shoulder seasons on the islands, when tourism is not yet at its most intense, or when it’s coming down from its peak. “Those times in particular are not as busy as others,” Stedman says.

The shoulder seasons in Hawaii are in May, right before the summer crowds arrive; and in September, after Labor Day, which usually marks the last holiday weekend of the summer travel season in the United States. Since tourist activity slows down during these periods, it’s an especially good time to seek out and patronize local Hawaiian-owned businesses like restaurants and cafés , craft shops, and even surf schools who are experiencing a decrease in foot traffic.

When is the cheapest time to visit Hawaii?

The cheapest time to book a flight and actually travel to Hawaii depends on where you are flying from, as well as the day of the week you want to travel. Those shoulder seasons—April or May, and September or October—will often be your best bet for affordable flights to Hawaii. And consider flying in the middle of the week; Laura Lindsay, the global travel trends expert at Skyscanner , says that, generally, the cheapest day to travel is Wednesday, while everyone's still at the office or school, while the most expensive day to travel is Sunday , when everyone's heading back home to work or class on Monday.

According to Skyscanner's data, for example, the lowest roundtrip airfares to Hawaii from Los Angeles are available in February, while the lowest roundtrip airfares to Hawaii from New York are available in December. However, for both sides of the mainland, July has the highest airfares. “Airfares are always subject to change based on supply and demand,” Lindsay says, “but travelers that are able to be flexible with their travel dates can find the lowest airfares to get to Hawaii for a fraction of the cost they might pay other days of the month or year.”

When is hurricane season in Hawaii?

Officially, the central Pacific hurricane season starts on June 1 and ends on November 30, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . That said, hurricanes in Hawaii are relatively rare given the islands’ position in the world’s largest ocean. Hurricanes often approach Hawaii, bringing rain, only to be pushed away by easterly trade winds before they can do too much damage.

Another reason is that Hawaii is the “proverbial needle in a haystack,” as Jeff Weber, an atmospheric scientist at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research , told USA Today . The Pacific Ocean is so vast and the islands, in comparison, are so tiny. Therefore, “hurricanes just can’t find Hawaii.” Not that it’s never happened before: In 1992, Hurricane Iniki, the most powerful hurricane to strike Hawaii in recorded history , caused six deaths and around $3.1 billion (roughly $6.8 billion today) in damage.

When is the best time to visit Hawaii for surfing?

Surf conditions in the waters around Hawaii naturally vary by season and location, and so you should plan when and where to surf by your level of experience. “During the winter months, big-wave surfers are drawn to Oahu’s North Shore to ride some of the most impressive waves in the world,” says Greg Champion, the general manager at The LineUp at Wai Kai , a waterfront recreational complex at Ewa Beach in Oahu. The North Shore of the island is best known for its impressive surf breaks, like the legendary right hand point break in Waimea Bay.

On the flip side, the best months to surf on Oahu’s Southern Shore are during the summer, between June and September, according to Randy Diamond, the vice president of operations for Highgate Hawaii . “Waikiki is one of the best places to surf in the world ,” Diamond says of the famous Hawaiian beach in Honolulu , on the south side of Oahu. “It’s a great option if you’re new to the sport and looking for beginner-friendly conditions year-round.”

When is the best time to visit Hawaii for whale watching?

Wondering about the best time to go whale watching in Hawaii? Your best bet will be to go either at the end of the calendar year, or right at the start.

“Humpback whales migrate back to Hawaii every year to mate and give birth and are only here during the winter months—December to April—with a few eager whales showing up as early as October and some stragglers staying through May,” according to Toni Colombo, a Lahaina local who owns and operates Hawaii Ocean Rafting with her husband Peter.

The most concentrated population of humpback whales will be in Maui the months of January, February, and March, specifically in the Maui Nui Basin area along the west coast of the island. Colombo says, “Because about 80% of the whales migrating to Hawaii come to Maui, this area was designated a sanctuary for humpback whales in 1991, making it one of the top places in the world for whale watching.”

The short answer: The months of April, May, September, and October are the most enjoyable when it comes to temperature and overall weather.

That being said, the best time to visit can be highly subjective. Some travelers are happy to visit among the holiday crowd, while some prefer traveling around in solace. Also, if you have a limited budget, you’d want to visit Hawaii when the price of airfare and accommodations are the cheapest. The perfect time to travel to Hawaii also depends on which island you wish to visit , as each one is different with its own unique charm and attractions.

Hawaii Travel Seasons

Like any travel destination, Hawaii has two distinct seasons: low and high. “Low” season is when – as you can guess – the cost of the trip is at its lowest because the place is least busy or crowded. In Hawaii, low season stretches from mid-April to early June, and then again from September to mid-December.

“High” season usually refers to regular holiday periods when most people travel. Anyone in school or with a child in school can only manage to travel during summer or key holiday periods (like Christmas or 4 th of July). Since this makes up for the majority of the population, traveling to Hawaii during these times is EXPENSIVE.

The low season or off-season in Hawaii runs from mid-April to early June (late spring) and September to mid-December (fall) – honestly, we think it’s a paradox considering these are the absolute best times to be in Hawaii.

If you want to avoid the crowds, are looking to save money, or if you just want reliably great weather, this is the time to visit. Airfares and hotel rates tend to be substantially lower, and with a little bit of online legwork, you can find several good deals.

The only exception you should be aware of is the Golden Week which occurs in the last week of April and stretches through early May. Due to its close proximity to Japan, Hawaii is the go-to destination for Japanese tourists during this period when their four major holidays take place one after the other. If you’re planning to visit between the last week in April and early May, make sure to book your inter-island flights, hotels, and car rentals in advance.

High Season

It’s peak season in Hawaii from mid-December to March. Resorts are booked to capacity and prices are up, especially in the last two weeks of December and the first week of January. As spring break also falls during this period, Hawaii is jam-packed with families that descend on the archipelago to take advantage of the school holiday.

If you want to visit during the high season, make your flight, hotel, and rental car reservations at least three months in advance, if not more. Hundreds of thousands of people travel to Hawaii for popular holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and the 4 th of July, so expect to pay top dollar and rub shoulders with the crowds.

We understand how tempting it can be to decide to cool off on a stunning tropical beach in Oahu or Maui, but keep in mind that a large number of families have the same idea each year. From June to August, the summer-time crowds are everywhere in Hawaii, so don’t expect to find serious bargains until spring and fall. This is vital to keep in mind during these high gas and high inflation times.

Summer months are also the warmest here, with temperatures climbing into the 90s. In addition to heat, it can also get pretty humid on some of the islands, like Oahu. For those who want to, say, go hiking through the legendary black lava fields of the Big Island , the peak of summer in June, July, or August might not be the best time to do so. 

The good thing about this weather though is that the surf is at its lowest. If you have small children or you want to learn how to swim or surf, the 80-degree water is really pleasant.

In terms of weather, spring and fall are the best times to enjoy the Aloha State.

Spring marks the beginning of the “dry” season in Hawaii and you couldn’t ask for nicer weather. This is also usually when airfare, hotels, Airbnbs, and other rental prices start to drop. Flowers are blooming, locals are celebrating the fantastic produce, and the annual week-long Merrie Monarch Festival adds to the good time with music, dance, and arts. The May Lei Day is also celebrated during this period.

While it rains every day somewhere in Hawaii at any time of the year, it seldom rains here in spring. 

The year-round temperature doesn’t vary much. The daytime temperatures in summer near the beach average between 84°F and 86°F, and the nighttime lows are typically about 10 degrees cooler.

Most water activities – swimming, surfing, diving – are better in the spring and fall seasons as the ocean is calmer and thus, safer. In the winter, currents are much stronger, waves are bigger, and storms make the weather even more unpredictable. If you are a water lover, March, April, and May (i.e, late spring) would be the perfect time to visit Hawaii. Fall (September, October, and November) is equally impressive for that fabulous weather, calm waters, and fewer crowds.

Best Time to Visit Hawaii on a Budget

The cheapest time to buy flight tickets and book accommodations and car rentals in Hawaii is during the low season when it’s much quieter.

As mentioned above, September through early December is the low of the off-peak season, and reduced demand leads to lower prices. The only exception is the Thanksgiving weekend since the military personnel based on the islands make travel arrangements with their family. 

If you can’t get away in the fall, don’t worry, the months of April and May also offer a great opportunity to travel cheaply to Hawaii. Just avoid the last week of April and the first week of May (because of the Golden Week). The rest of these two months are always abound with great deals on everything.

Flight ticket prices will vary, but they mostly depend on when you’re flying and where you’re flying from. Tickets from the West Coast are the cheapest at $350 – $475 per person, but we have seen even lower than that in the low season. East Coast to Hawaii tickets can be doubly expensive no matter when you fly, but you can still find some good discounts. 

Here are a few tips to save money on flights:

Fly during the week: Weekday flights are not as in-demand as the weekend ones; you can save even more by taking a red-eye flight.

Book at least a month in advance: We highly recommend buying your tickets 30-40 days before the date of your departure.

Be flexible: Some Hawaiian airports are way cheaper than others; consider flying to Lihue (Kauai), Kahului (Maui), and Honolulu (Oahu) to save some more bucks.

Accommodations

The cost of your accommodations in Hawaii will vary depending on what kind of property it is – budget or luxury. You can stay in a $40/night hostel or a $300+/night hotel. Hotel prices usually don’t go below $160-$180 per night even during the least crowded times, but if you’re willing to make some sacrifices (like a room without an ocean view), you can save considerably.

Before the 2021 rental car shortage, it was easy to find a mid-sized or economy car to rent for $40. Now, with more people traveling again – and since rental car companies sold off most of their fleets in 2020 – the prices have increased to $75/day and more including taxes. You can probably find a cheaper deal by looking around and comparing prices. We mainly use Turo when looking for budget options for car rentals.

April, May, September (the last two weeks) and November are the best times to avoid hundreds of thousands of tourists who come to Hawaii each year. Personally, we absolutely love late September and early October to explore the hidden gems as well as popular “touristy” spots in peace. With children back in school, you won’t find many families here this time of year.

It is understandable, that when the weather is hot and muggy in most of the US, people seek relief at Hawaii’s beaches. Plus, schools are out so both vacationing families and locals are looking to the waters for some much-needed fun.

This is why summer is one of the priciest and busiest times to fly to Hawaii.

But hey, don’t take this to mean we are hating on the Hawaiian summers – not at all! Despite how crowded and expensive summer gets, the waters are at their calmest, making it perfect for snorkeling and swimming.

June and July are considered dry months so they don’t receive a lot of rainfall, which can be a blessing for some adventurers. This is also when waterfalls are at their weakest so you can take a ton of Instagram-worthy pictures.

The Worst Time to Visit Hawaii

You may have heard that there is no bad time to visit Hawaii . Well, about that…If you talk to a local they will tell you that Hawaii should be avoided during certain months. These include the wet season (heavy-rainfall months) and the busy season. And both of these seasons coincide in December.

December , in our opinion, can be a not-so-good time to visit the islands. From mid-December to New Year, Christmas-cheery visitors come to Hawaii from all across the world, resulting in higher rates for flights, accommodations, and rental cars.

December is also the wettest and coldest month of the year. We know, we know, Hawaiian winters are not really winters but when temperatures only reach the high 70s, you won’t find it as easy to go frolicking in the waters. 

Best Time for a Honeymoon, Babymoon, or Destination Wedding

Looking for a picture-perfect destination for a major milestone in your life? Be it the wedding of your dreams or your long-awaited honeymoon or babymoon , Hawaii has got you covered.

Although these paradise-like islands are beautiful all year round, we recommend choosing April or May for the least amount of problematic and unpredictable weather. You probably also want to avoid crowds, so choosing low seasons from mid-April to May or even mid-June, and September to mid-December will be a good idea. Best Time to See Wildlife

One of the most exciting parts of a getaway in Hawaii is seeing all of the stunning wildlife around the archipelago. Whale Watching

The humpback whale-watching season in Hawaii starts in December and lasts through March . Maui is the best place for spotting whales, but other islands also offer several opportunities during the season. Make sure to book a guided whale-watching tour so an experienced guide can take you to the best viewing areas.

May is typically the birthing season for monk seals in Hawaii, so this is when you’ll likely spot them. But please keep in mind that monk seals are a critically endangered species here and less than 1,500 are alive today. If you’re hoping to see them, Kauai would be where you’d have the highest chance. In case you see one, give them at least 25 feet of space.

Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles

May to September is the best time to spot sea turtles; this is when they come out of the sea and head to the beaches to lay their eggs. Again, when you see a turtle, keep your distance. We get it, they are super cute, but if you are caught touching, feeding, holding, or mishandling them in any way, you can face hefty fines plus jail time.

Best Time for Swimming and Snorkeling

The year-round water temperatures in Hawaii average about 77°F – 79°F, so you can swim comfortably any time you want. That being said, when it comes to swimming and snorkeling, the warmer the water, the better.

For that, the summer months – June, July, and August – are best to get the most out of those warm tropical waters. While winters are not that cold, the water can get chilly so many people choose to wear a wetsuit to safely enjoy their time in the ocean. Summer is better for snorkeling because of the smaller waves and calmer waters. If you’re really into snorkeling, we recommend Maui or the Big Island, as both see less rain and wind compared to the other islands.

There is no best season or month to see a lava-spewing volcano in Hawaii (or anywhere tbh). Volcano activity is driven by movement in the subterranean region; it doesn’t matter which season it is.

The only active volcano in Hawaii right now is Kilauea, located mostly within the Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. You can visit it any time you want to see the lava flowing out of the volcano. If you’re visiting in winter or watching something like this from a higher elevation, make sure to bring a jacket as it can get chilly.

Best Time For Stargazing

The best time to gaze at the stars in Hawaii is between March and September when there is the least amount of rain and storms. If you’re visiting during this time, head over to Mauna Kea on the Big Island; it’s home to the largest astronomical observatory in the world and the best spot for stargazing. The west side of Kauai (especially Kekaha, Waimea, and Polihale State Park) is also a tremendous place to observe several celestial objects.

Best Time to Visit the Four Main Hawaiian Islands

The best time to visit Oahu and its city of Honolulu is April, May, the last week of September, October, and November . Temperatures both outside and in the water are warmer during these months, making it perfect to stroll on Waikiki Beach in shorts and flip-flops. Rainfall is also lower so you can explore the entire island without coming across big tropical storms. 

For thrill-seeking souls, the Kualoa Ranch on the northeast side of the island offers some Jurassic Park-level adventures.

If crowds are not your thing, avoid traveling to Oahu in December and January; this is when the Honolulu Marathon begins, attracting tens of thousands of visitors.

Late September, October, and November are less crowded in Maui, which means affordable rates as well.

The Big Island of Hawaii

The late summer and fall months – August, September, October, and November – are less rainy and less crowded on the Kailua-Kona side. If you’re visiting the Hilo side of the island, go during the dry season which begins in April and lasts until October.

Consider visiting Kauai in April, May, September, October, or November to beat the high costs and crowds, but mostly, to avoid the rain. This island receives the largest amount of rainfall, especially during the summer and winter months.

Additional Things to Consider When Booking a Trip to Hawaii

Hawaii is technically part of the US, but in a lot of ways, it feels like its own little nation. The islanders are a proud bunch who love their unique history, customs, culture, language, and food. Taking a little time to learn their ways will go a long way in making your vacation that much richer and rewarding. Here are a few ways you can embrace the aloha spirit: 

Buy Local:  Whether you’re buying local crafts, like a lei, or booking a whale-watching tour, consider using locally- and native-owned companies. If you see a “locals-only” placard on beaches or surf spots, respect the rule and go somewhere else; there is plenty of shoreline for everyone.

Try local flavors: Take your vacation as an opportunity to try Hawaiian and Polynesian foods: kalua (roasted pig), poke (diced and marinated raw fish), shave ice, haupia (coconut pudding), macadamia nuts, and fresh tropical fruits like mango and pineapple. There are tons of food trucks across Hawaii that serve “plate lunches” featuring authentic local dishes. You may have seen this if you’ve ever watched the show Hawaii Five-0.

Learn to be flexible with timing: Yes, “Hawaiian time” is actually a thing even though some may think it’s an offensive stereotype. Maybe it comes from living in a remote location where locals learned long ago that everything happens at a slower pace. You’d be better off leaving stress and impatience at home.

Most people think that “Hawaii” and “budget” don’t belong in the same sentence. After all, it’s supposed to be a splurge to visit a gorgeous tropical paradise… right?

We’re here to tell you that traveling to Hawaii on a budget is possible and can be even more rewarding than what the brochures from expensive resorts show you. There are so many opportunities for how to do Hawaii on a budget in every category – from airfares to discount accommodations in Hawaii to saving money on activities. Keep reading for our best tips to save money on a trip to Hawaii.

Finding the cheapest way to go to Hawaii

Trying to plan a Hawaii vacation on a budget? Make sure you don’t blow it before your feet even touch the sand! If you’re traveling from mainland US to Hawaii, there’s a very good chance that you can score an awesome deal on your airfare to Hawaii and there are lots of ways to do it. Read on for insider tips on how to go to Hawaii on a budget.

First, be flexible about your dates and which island you visit – within reason. Since airfare and lodging are the two biggest components of your Hawaii trip cost, you’ll want to balance those two to minimize your costs. Second, weigh the many options you have for using cash or points to book those plane tickets. Here are just a few ways to save money on airfare to Hawaii:

Find the cheapest airfare for cash payment

Sometimes the simplest thing to do is pay cash for a plane ticket, and with the great deals you can often find from America’s west coast it just might make sense. The first place to start your search is on Skyscanner .

We love using Skyscanner to find flights because it allows us to reflect our total flexibility – we can allow nearby airports on both ends and search for whole months at a time to land the best rate. Even if you don’t end up paying cash, it’s always important to know the going rate for flights when evaluating whether or not an award redemption is worthwhile.

Look for special deals

In early 2019 Southwest launched their much-anticipated service to Hawaii. Introductory fares were as low as $49 each way from select airports and eligible for Companion Pass! Now fares have settled in higher, but still cheaper than plenty of mainline carriers. Southwest’s Companion Pass only requires that you pay taxes, so it can be a really great deal. The fastest way to earn your companion pass is by opening a Southwest credit card – even faster if you open a personal card and a business card.

The catch is that they don’t have an extensive route map if you live outside of the West Coast: currently they only offer non-stop service from California, Phoenix and Las Vegas to Hawaii, with the most extensive service to Oahu in Maui . Some US cities also get flights to Kauai and Big Island . There are also inter-island flights, but it’s definitely worth comparing prices versus local carrier Mokulele Airlines to find the cheapest option.

Still and all, the Companion Pass is such an amazing value that I recently opened two Southwest credit cards in anticipation of a return visit to Hawaii. I only have to pay $5.60 to bring another family member with me! See the latest Southwest credit card promotions to get your Companion Pass.

Many frequent flyers have heard of Southwest’s Companion Pass that you can earn through credit card sign up bonuses , but did you know that Alaska Airlines offers a similar one too? Alaska’s is a little different (only one per year and generally $99 per companion ticket plus taxes, but the base fare is often waived in the first year with promotions) but Alaska Airlines has tons of flights to Hawaii ! You can earn one with an Alaska Airlines credit card .

And it’s not one of those gimmicks where you have to pay an exorbitant price for the first ticket in order to use a companion fare on the second one (as with some old Amex promotions), you can just buy any regular ticket on the website. Especially for west coasters who already have access to bargain plane tickets to the Aloha State, this might be one the cheapest way to travel to Hawaii.

Book with frequent flyer miles

Obviously the cheapest way to go to Hawaii is not to pay for it! When your friends ask you how to go do Hawaii on a budget, this is usually the first trick you’ll want to tell them about. “Free” is the cheapest way to get to Hawaii and one we’ve taken advantage of many times.

We recommend targeting at least 2 cents per mile, but sometimes it makes sense to redeem for as little as 1.5 cents per mile if you really don’t want to spend the money out of pocket (after all, if you’re buying four plane tickets to pretty much anywhere you’re looking at a minimum of a thousand dollars). While many airlines now offer dynamic (= more expensive) point redemptions, here are the major airline baseline award redemptions for from the continental US to Hawaii as of October 2022 (economy class for us, folks):

American Airlines – 45,000 peak; 40,000 off-peak

United Airlines – 45,000

Delta Airlines – 45,000

Alaska Airlines – 40,000

British Airways – 26,000 from west coast , 51,500 from east coast (operated by AA)

From the chart above, it’s clear where the value in frequent flyer tickets to Hawaii lies. Alaska Airlines and sometimes British Airways can offer far better value than the mainline US carriers. British Airways offers a distance-based award chart, so passengers coming from the west coast only need 26,000 miles for a round trip, while east coasters would need a whopping 51,500 miles!

Ok, so how can you earn enough British Airways Avios points as an American? Simple: open up a Chase Sapphire Preferred , Chase Sapphire Reserve or Chase Ink Business Preferred card and once your sign-up bonus hits, do an instant transfer to your Executive Club account! Then redeem here through your account BA account. As of August 2023, the Sapphire Preferred sign up bonus is 60,000 points as is the Chase Sapphire Reserve sign up bonus , while small business owners get a 100,000 point sign up bonus with the Ink Business Preferred. That’s almost enough to get a family to Hawaii and back from the West Coast. You can also follow our lead and get both personal and business cards for each adult in the family cards to really juice up your award travel options.

Southwest’s frequent flyer redemption is fare-based so it varies a ton, but you can combine it with your Companion Pass discussed above to get two tickets to Hawaii for just the miles you’d need for one ticket. If you can find an affordable time of year using their low fare calendar, it’s a dynamite option to fly to Hawaii for cheap. Apply for a Southwest credit card here to start earning your Companion Pass. If you also have the Chase cards I mentioned above, know that you can transfer those Ultimate Rewards points to Southwest as well if you’re a little short.

If you’re in a city with lots of United flights, the most straightforward option might be to grab a United Mileage Plus Explorer credit card . The usual fee is $95 per year (though sometimes the first year fee is waived) and it comes with 50,000 bonus miles – enough to cover your ticket. We love that it includes free checked baggage when you use the card, even if you’re just covering taxes on an award ticket redemption, and you’ll get two passes to the United Club lounge. We carry this card and use it whenever we’re booking United flights.

Redeem Chase Ultimate Reward Points

Wondering how to go to Hawaii on the cheap? The final way to save money on plane tickets to Hawaii is actually how we picked up three of our four tickets on one trip to Hawaii. Since we’ve accumulated a ton of Chase Ultimate Rewards points through our Sapphire Preferred , Sapphire Reserve and Ink Business Preferred cards, we’ve sometimes taken advantage of their flexibility to buy our tickets.

One of our favorite features of Ultimate Rewards points is that you can redeem them for almost any travel expense through the portal; your redemption rate is 1-1.25 cents per point with most Chase cards and 1.5 cents per point if you have the Sapphire Reserve card (even if the points were earned on a different Chase card and transferred or pooled).

In our case tickets on Alaska were $445 each if purchased with cash, so we redeemed almost exactly 30,000 points for each. Ultimate Rewards points do not transfer to Alaska Airlines, but by purchasing through the portal we had no out of pocket expense – not even taxes. Pretty sweet!

Vacation Rentals in Hawaii

Vacation rentals can be a great option in Hawaii, but it’s important to know what you’re getting in to. In June 2019, the mayor of Honolulu enacted strict limits on unhosted short-term vacation rentals on Oahu – essentially stifling the market for Airbnb on Oahu outside of designated tourist zones like Waikiki, Ko Olina and Turtle Bay. Newer restrictions are even tougher.

Other areas will still have some vacation rentals available, but limited in number and they have to be licensed. Likewise, other parts of Hawaii have limits on short-term rentals. Vacation rentals can be one of the best options for how to do Hawaii on the cheap, but check listings carefully!

If you find an awesome legal rental in Hawaii, that can be a great way to stay! You’ll be able to save money on groceries, parking and more while also enjoying a different kind of feel.

Hotels in Hawaii

Would you rather just stay in a hotel in Hawaii? There are so many to choose from, even if you’re planning a trip to Hawaii on a budget!

The cheapest way to stay at a hotel in Hawaii is for free, obviously. We recently grabbed a World of Hyatt credit card so that we can use the sign-up bonus for an upcoming trip to Kauai and Maui! While there are tons of hotel loyalty programs out there, Hyatt has the most generous award chart and often requires only half as many points per night as competitors like Marriott and Hilton. In addition, award stays pay no resort fee and still count toward achieving elite status. We really love the Hyatt program!

If that all sounds great, I have even better news for you. The Chase Sapphire Preferred , Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Ink Business Preferred cards credit cards that our family uses can transfer their points to Hyatt as well! Obviously you need to use your credit cards responsibly and pay the balances every month, but if you’re strategic about your sign up bonuses you can land a mostly free trip to paradise by combining one of the airline programs I mentioned above with the Hyatt hotel program.

Another budget-friendly hotel option for Hawaii is to try to look for ones that offer a kitchen and laundry to avoid pricey meals out and laundry services. You’ll still get the resort amenities like beautiful pools, on-site restaurants and quality staffing. Check out these great options on each island:

Home Exchange in Hawaii

There are so many reasons why we love home exchange, and a few that are extremely relevant to planning a Hawaii family vacation on a budget.

First, your cash expense to do a home exchange in Hawaii will be less than one night in a hotel .

Second, having a real home with a kitchen means you can avoid pricey restaurant meals – and they sure are pricey in Hawaii!

Third, being away from the main tourist areas means almost everything will be less expensive (not to mention less crowded) – groceries are cheaper, our long-term Home Exchange house on Oahu had its own parking and the house even came stocked with boogie boards and snorkel gear so that we didn’t have to rent.

Beyond the economics, doing a home exchange in Hawaii had other amazing benefits. Everyone had plenty of space to stretch out. We had our own laundry facilities. We hung out at “locals only” spots rather than the crowded tourist beaches. There was a second fridge for all our Costco supplies. Camping in Hawaii and RV in Hawaii

Another option for the truly budget-minded is camping on Hawaii. Every island has some wonderful, gorgeous places to pitch your tent though the amenities vary tremendously by site. Check out this helpful roundup of where to camp on Kauai .

If you want to combine your accommodations and your transportation, consider renting an RV in Hawaii . There are tons of beautiful campgrounds on every island and you’ll save money overall compared with renting a car and a hotel room.

Renting a car in Hawaii seems, like many things, to be more expensive than on the mainland. In some places like Honolulu and Waikiki you can stay amidst the tourist throngs and get by without a car – walk to popular beaches, walk to mini marts, walk to tourist restaurants, and rely on hotel concierges to book activities on other parts of the island that include transportation. You can take buses to some places on Oahu, but they can be very time consuming.

If you are a solo traveler in Hawaii, it might make sense to go stay in one of the cities the car-free route since all of those small (or large) premia are only impacting one traveler. For couples or families, though, you’ll more than make up the cost of a rental car by saving money on pretty much everything else . You’ll also gain the freedom to explore beautiful, peaceful spots that most tourists don’t get to see. Moreover, in many parts of Hawaii you absolutely need a car to get around.

We have a few favorites for finding deals on car rentals in Hawaii (and everywhere else). The most straightforward is good old RentalCars.com . You can quickly search for the type of car you want across tons of providers of all sizes and reserve without any upfront payment . Nearly every reservation can be cancelled, so we often check back weekly leading up to our travels and rebook if we see a better rate.

A great local option is Discount Hawaii Car Rental . They work with all of the major Hawaii car rental companies and have Hawaii-based customer service in case an issue comes up. That can be especially helpful if you’re arriving when it’s late in the day on the mainland.

Another option to consider is joining AARP . The membership costs about as much as a Starbucks run but can save you up to 30% on rental car rates (in addition to discounts on some hotels)! Surprisingly, you don’t have to be a senior or retired to join AARP.

Our rental car ended up being by far the most expensive component of our 5 week trip to Hawaii. We needed a minivan for part of our trip, but it would have been the same price as renting one compact car for five weeks and a second compact car for a week and a half in the middle when we were joined by a few grandmas.

Though the minivan was pricey at $1600 for five weeks, it was handy to have for hauling around a big stack of boogie boards, beach towels and cases of food from Costco (more on that below). If you plan to shop at Costco and haul around lots of beach gear, you may want to consider sizing up from the smaller options. For reference, the quote we received for an intermediate car for 10 days was just shy of $500. Thanks to rental car shortages after the pandemic, rates may be significantly higher if you’re booking a shorter rental period.

What’s the best place to get gas in Hawaii? It’s often Costco. Seriously, folks. On average gas was 70 cents cheaper per gallon at Costco than at other local gas stations during our last visit. That’s more than $10 saved every time you fill up! That said, other local gas sellers have upped their game by lowering their prices so it’s worth peeking at Safeway and Sam’s Club prices when you drive by, as the Costco gas lines can be long. My favorite tip for comparing gas prices in Hawaii is that on the store detail page for each Costco warehouse you can expand the “Gas Station” section to see hours and the current price! (Note that Hawaii Kai does not have gas, but all other Costco warehouses in Hawaii do.)

Before booking a package deal, you need to carefully consider the value of everything that’s included to make sure it’s actually the cheapest way to vacation in Hawaii for the dates you want. We booked ours as a Black Friday special, so it was deeply discounted.

If you’re planning a budget Hawaii vacation, you’ll need to think carefully about how and where you’ll eat. Many items have to be transported to Hawaii by ship, so food prices in Hawaii can be anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars more than on the mainland. Having a plan for food is one of the keys to how to travel to Hawaii on a budget.

Of course the best way to save money on food in Hawaii is to book a vacation rental with a kitchen and prepare food yourself. But even if you plan to make all your meals at your home away from home, you’ll have to be judicious in you grocery purchases. But we’ve done some scouting for you and have a few suggestions to help you through since grocery prices in Hawaii can be quite daunting.

First, let’s discuss Costco. If you already have a membership and you’ll be visiting Hawaii with a few other people, Costco in Hawaii can be a great value ! Prices are nearly the same as at Costco on the mainland, and prices are much cheaper than local grocery stores for items like dairy, eggs and meat. There are seven Costco locations in Hawaii, including four on Oahu.

In addition to food and pantry staples, you’ll find some beach gear, Hawaiian shirts and other handy items. While you’re there, grab a meal at Costco – it doesn’t require membership and the whole family can eat for less than $10! It’s not a nutritious choice to make every day, but if you’re going to Costco in Hawaii once every week or two it’s a great way to save a little money without cooking at home.

Pro tip: If you don’t have a Costco membership but know someone who does, have them buy you some Costco Cash cards (gift cards). You can use these without a membership!

All that said, before you dive in on a Costco membership for your cheap trip to Hawaii consider whether or not you’ll actually make it through a 20 pound bag of rice during your vacation. And where will you store all that food? What should you do if you’ll only be in Hawaii for a short time or you aren’t bringing an entire football team? Head to Target!

That’s right, the big red bullseye of value has made it to paradise! You’ll find locations on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island and the stores are full of all your favorites from the mainland – plus some local specialties in the “Aloha Shop”. Since Target carries groceries – both house brand and national brands, it might just be the best place to do your grocery shopping in Hawaii. Similarly, if you prefer to shop at Walmart you’ll find tons of stores on Oahu and one or two on the other islands.

You may notice that prices in those stores are a little higher than what you’d find on the mainland, but fear not: both stores offer price match guarantees . Just pull up the item you want on your phone from the store’s website – or another major website – and they’ll give you the lower price right there at the register! I saved 20% on our sunscreen that way. Target will definitely be your friend when you travel to Hawaii on the cheap.

Another local option is Foodland. We found many items there that were only a little more expensive than at our local grocery stores on the mainland, though some things (like dairy and eggs) were much more expensive than we found at Costco. Sign up for their Maika’i card for extra discounts and make sure to check out the poke counter in the back of the store – we got an inside tip that many locals hit Foodland for their own poke fixes.

One of the great things about a vacation in Hawaii is that there are so many amazing things to do for free that take full advantage of what makes the Aloha State special. You can relax on the beach, hike to a waterfall , go on a scenic drive and even attend a hula performance – all for free! It’s one of the best places to travel to without a passport if you’re American.

We’ve had plenty of days in Hawaii when we didn’t spend a dime (except on shave ice, but that’s a different story). But what about big ticket paid activities? Can you still do them even if you’re visiting Hawaii on a budget? Here are a few ideas for how to have those special experiences without busting your budget.

Go Oahu Card

The Go Oahu Card by Smart Destinations bundles multiple activities together to save you money. There are two different options to choose from: All-Inclusive or Build Your Own.

With their All-Inclusive pass you pay a fixed rate based on the number of days you’d like to use the card (which can be spread over a two week period) and then you can do as many of those activities as you can squeeze in! There are options ranging from luaus to catamaran snorkeling trips to hikes to movie tours, and many activities offer free transportation from Waikiki in case you don’t have a car.

You can choose cards for 1, 2, 3, 5 or 7 days – cards for 3 days or more include your choice of one “premium” activity like a luau, a sunset dinner sail, snorkeling with wild sea turtles or even a semi-private surfing lesson.

If you’re visiting Oahu for a week, we think the 3 day card is the sweet spot for value at $219 per adult and $189 per child. Why? In addition to great activities like the Polynesian Cultural Center, you’ll get to choose one premium activity like a snorkel boat tour. There are plenty of other high-value activities included for the other two days so that you’d easily get plenty of value from the 3-day card .

Entertainment Book

Remember the Entertainment Book that our families all used to buy during fundraisers in the 1980s? They’re still around. And they actually offer some pretty good deals in Hawaii on several islands!

As with most deals in the Entertainment Book , you’ll generally find 2-for-1 type coupons. You’ll find coupons for plenty of restaurants, but also coupons for wonderful attractions like the helicopter tours, snorkel rentals, Twogood Kayaks, the Bishop Museum, the Pacific Aviation Museum at Pearl Harbor and more. If you use it for even one or two activities in Hawaii, it’ll pay for itself. You can even choose a digital book to have all the deals at your fingertips!

Use your memberships

You might have the key to cheap and free activities right in your wallet! If you’re a AAA member, always ask when booking hotels or activities if they offer a special rate.

And if you are a member of a science center back home that participates in the ASTC Passport program, bring your card to the wonderful Bishop Museum in Honolulu to receive free admission. We went twice (for free!) and even considered a third visit. It’s the perfect free activity if you’re trying to visit Hawaii with kids on a budget!

Military discounts

There are almost 50,000 US military personnel and their dependents living in Hawaii (population around 1.5 million). Military families vacationing in Hawaii will find discounts almost everywhere on admission to attractions. You’ll also benefit from lower hotel rates and access to four commissaries on Oahu, plus an exchange where you can buy discounted gifts. Thank you for your service!

There are two schools of thought about “island hopping” in Hawaii as it relates to the cheapest way to visit Hawaii.

First, the “pro island hopping camp”: Flights from mainland US to Hawaii are generally long and expensive. It’s cheaper to fly to Hawaii once and visit several islands while you’re there than it is to pay for separate roundtrip airfares. This is especially true if you’re coming from the east coast or if Hawaii is a once-in-a-lifetime splurge for you! The cheapest way to travel between Hawaiian islands is to look for a deal on Southwest and use companion pass if you have it, especially if you’ll need to check a bag.

Second, the “anti island hopping camp”: If you’re trying to plan a trip to Hawaii on a budget, you’ll economize more by staying in one place. Many vacation rentals offer a weekly rate. Rental cars are much cheaper by the week – often 5 days cost more than 7 days ( see the difference here ).

If you visit two islands (or more!) you’ll have to either eat out all the time or buy small, expensive quantities of food – and then buy them again on your next stop.

Plus you have to pay to get from one island to another, often around $75 each way. You can limit that to one segment if you book an “open jaw” into one island and out of another, but check that pricing versus a regular roundtrip plus an inter-island roundtrip.

Where do we fall? We suggest that you sit back and enjoy the aloha on one island at a time! Hawaii will always be waiting for you to return. The exception is if you’ve already been to some of the islands and want to visit a new on, but flight availability isn’t great. Now that we live in the Midwest it might work out better for us to stop on Oahu or Maui en route to Kauai since it has fewer inbound flights from the mainland.

If you’re planning a family vacation to Hawaii on a budget, some of the tips we’ve already mentioned will be extremely helpful! Here’s a quick roundup:

• Look for companion pass deals for airfare
• Grab an Airbnb with a kitchen – make sure it has a decent sized fridge if you plan to shop at Costco in Hawaii
• Encourage your kids to eat fresh, local food rather than food that’s packaged and sent from the mainland (you can bring a box of cereal in your luggage if that’s a must-have)
• Bring your own car seat to avoid paying for one with your rental car
• Use your science museum membership from home for free admission to the Bishop Museum
• If possible, avoid major school break times

Obviously prices vary a ton depending on where you’re coming from and style of travel. As a baseline, domestic plane tickets to Hawaii cost $400-1200 per person in 2022. Hotel or Airbnb accommodations cost $150-600 per night. The cost of food varies tremendously, but budget at least $40 per person per day if you’ll be eating all your meals at restaurants. Even “cheap trips to Hawaii” aren’t really cheap by true budget travel standards unfortunately.

Oahu can be very inexpensive thanks to abundant choices for lodging and food, and staying in Waikiki can remove the need for a rental car. The Hilo side of the Big Island also offers good value for the money, as it’s one of the less popular tourist areas. All things considered, the Big Island is probably the cheapest island in Hawaii.

We’ve found great deals almost anytime outside of school breaks! Fall is the quietest (and thus, cheapest) time for tourism in Hawaii. January and February can also be inexpensive times for flights as long as you avoid the end of winter break and the long weekends during the season.

If you’re flying at an off-peak time of year, you can often snag deals just a week or two in advance from the west coast. For flights over holiday periods or from the east coast, you’ll want to buy your tickets several months in advance for the best deals.

Guide: Best Time to Visit Hawaii for Every Reason Including Deals

Here is where you will find the best time to visit Hawaii for deals and more. When you travel during specific periods, there are important dates that’ll impact your costs. This post is perfect for budget travelers when price is the major determining factor. We have also included weather and surf conditions too.

Best time to visit Hawaii: for travel deals.

1. Spring 2022. From now until early June. This best time to visit Hawaii option is also great for last-minute deals. There should be more sales this week, in fact, so stay tuned for those. Spring is always one of the best times to visit Hawaii.

2. Peak summer travel 2022 – June 10 to August 14. From mid-June, through July and into early August are some of the busiest times to visit Hawaii, as well as some of the most expensive. Consider airfares, accommodation prices, and availability of car rentals, restaurants and activities before booking. Best to avoid summer if possible if price is an issue.

3. Late summer/fall travel 2022. August 15 through December 15, 2022 (except Thanksgiving time). The months of September, October and November offer better prices across the board. Greater availability for off-season travel will return.

4. Christmas in Hawaii 2022. If you choose to travel at the very highest priced time of year, during Christmas and New Year holidays, buyer beware. While airfare is still readily available, the most desirable accommodations are far less so. And the prices are eye-popping. Having said that, the lowest cost flights to Hawaii at this time of year will be for travel on December 24, 25, 31 and January 1. Also, mainland departures starting after December 25 will be at a lower cost. As with peak summer travel, the availability and pricing of airfares, accommodations, car rentals, restaurants and activities should all be considered before booking. Best to avoid summer if possible if price is an issue.

5. Winter/snowbird season 2023 includes travel from early January through late March, 2023. It’s too early to say how this will shake out regarding being a best time to visit Hawaii. In recent years, there have been better than anticipated winter prices, which has made this a great time to visit Hawaii. We’ll update you further when it gets closer.

6. Spring break 2o23. Between mid-March and early-April 2023. This can also be one of the highest-priced times of year to visit Hawaii. Don’t expect to see many deals offered for spring break, although spring break season sometimes has a few pleasant surprises. Also keep in mind that the last week of April is Golden Week in Japan, when a large influx of Japanese visitors to Hawaii is generally expected.

Summary.  A winter, spring, or fall Hawaii vacation has always been our recommendation for the best times to visit Hawaii. The very finest in Hawaii weather is found during spring and fall (winter isn’t bad either, especially when compared with anywhere on the mainland). These are times you can also revel in the feeling of having the islands more to yourself. That’s something which is becoming rare, and is only possible during the low season. We can’t say enough about just how beneficial that is. Plus, you’ll have the best chance to score Hawaii travel deals.

Best time to visit Hawaii: for surf and ocean conditions.

1. Overview. While ocean temperatures remain more or less constant year-round, the conditions themselves vary greatly. As a result, a beach that’s calm in summer can feature giant and dangerous waves in winter. Tourists less familiar with our oceans should especially take note and be vigilant about ocean conditions when choosing beaches for swimming, and snorkeling. Ocean surf can be very specific, with one part of a beach being dangerous, while another part may remain calm and safe.

2. Summer generally features more calm Hawaiian ocean conditions. But we are aware that the south shore can feature high waves in summer.

3. Winter can feature very high waves with surfing conditions at north shore and west facing beaches. Storms can exacerbate these conditions. That’s why Hawaii is famous for surfing, after all.

Best Time to visit Hawaii: for weather.

1. Overview. The weather in Hawaii is generally glorious and is a subject of interest to both visitors and residents. In summer, Hawaii temperatures are generally in the 80’s with refreshing trade winds. It’s the time of year to shut off the air conditioner and head off to Hawaii.

Sun, rain, wind, and other conditions are prominent features of Hawaiian islands weather. That’s largely due to the islands being small, in a vast ocean, which in part creates variability in Hawaii’s weather. The Pacific Ocean is the source of the unique Hawaii weather. The Pacific Ocean temperature only varies by about 6 degrees year-round, between 73, and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Since we’re remotely located 2,500 miles from the nearest continent, the air in Hawaii is impacted by ocean conditions, whereas on the mainland, it’s more dictated by land conditions.

2. Hawaii summer weather . As we head into the balmy summer months soon, with slightly warmer 80+ degree days and mid-60 to 70 degree nights, you’ll still note that the breezy flow of cool air from the arctic keeps Hawaii comfortable all year, even in the summer.

3. Seasons in Hawaii . The warm “Kau” season starts in May and runs until September, when you can expect longer and warmer days and nights. The cool “Hooilo” season is typical for the remainder of the year, when f rom October until May, expect nighttime temperatures from the 50’s to 60’s and daytime temps in the 70’s. The lowest temperatures are found in February, March, and April.

4. Hawaii Rainfall.  Major winter storms can occur from November to December and from March to April. Precipitation occurs roughly 15 percent of the time during those six months. When winter rains occur, they can impact the entire state. Keep an eye out for brown water advisories following heavy rainfall when the ocean isn’t  safe for swimming.

5. Hawaii Trade Winds. Most of the time, cooling trade winds emanate from the north and east across the state. These keep temperature and humidity moderate, although the south and west sides of the islands remain warmer and dryer, with most of the rain at these times found in mountains and valleys. During trade wind conditions, you can escape rain by heading to those drier areas. While it may be raining at one place, another part of the island can be dry and sunny. The trade winds do stop about 20 percent of the time. South (Kona) winds found mostly in winter can result in cold and wet conditions, while during summer, these lead to higher humidity.

6. Hawaii hurricane season. The possibility of hurricanes occurs annually from June through November.

Best time to visit Hawaii: for other reasons.

1. Overview. There are so many reasons to visit Hawaii and you may choose to pick a time of year to visit based on any number of them. That’s true whether you’re headed to Honolulu and the famous Waikiki Beach, or any other Hawaii destination.

2. Humpback whales, for example, are seen in Hawaii each winter and they’re unforgettable, to say the least. Almost extinct just 50 years ago, their population has grown along with global whaling bans. See our post for more details about opportunities to see Humpback Whales. Maui is most renowned for whale watching opportunities, and we can confirm that, although we have seen them on Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island as well. The peak season and best time of year to get a glimpse runs from November to March each year.

3. Hawaii volcanoes. Another unique Hawaii phenomenon and one of our top recommendations is found at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. Not to be missed.

Whether it is the upcoming Memorial Day lantern festival on Oahu, the wine festival, other events like King Kamehameha Day, the Merrie Monarch Festival, the Prince Lot Hula Festival, or the Aloha Festivals, there’s always a ceremony, festival or another great opportunity going on to enjoy Hawaii food and great and unique entertainment. Wondering when to visit Oahu? If you've narrowed down your selection of islands and Oahu is your destination, you've made an excellent choice! Oahu has excellent weather year-round; in fact, many people believe it has the best weather of all the islands. Maybe that's why almost half of all visitors to the state of Hawaii pick Oahu. Or perhaps it's because Oahu is the most scenic of all the islands, or... well, that list could go on and on. Oahu is an excellent choice for visitors!

The best time to visit Oahu, taking into consideration the weather, demand for accommodations, and how crowded (or not) the island is - are the months of early April, May, September, and early October.  Some call these Oahu's 'off-season periods' or the 'shoulder months.'

What to Expect on Oahu in 2024

Visiting Oahu within the next few years, between 2024 and 2025, means you'll avoid the increased crowds projected to return by 2026. As of late 2023, Oahu remains the only island with fewer visitors compared to the same period year over year, and also lower than pre-pandemic figures. So if you're visiting soon, you've selected a great time!

Despite the many challenges of the pandemic and subsequent inflation, Hawaii appears to be on track for record visitor arrivals in the coming years.

Weather & Climate

Weather is the primary concern of many travelers, so it's a relief to know you don't have to worry about it much on Oahu. Even in the winter months, from mid-November through March, the high-temperature averages somewhere around 80°F (26°C). In the summer months, the high typically average somewhere in the mid- to upper- 80s F (30-32°C).

As with all the islands, Oahu does see a bit more rain during the winter months, especially on the windward (east) side. Typically, showers are scattered, and the sun quickly returns after a brief rainstorm. Plus, there's the added benefit that rain keeps the island beautiful and lush. Hurricane Season

Hurricane and tropical storms are historically rare events on Oahu and Hawaii in general, but it’s still important to be prepared for storms if you visit during Hawaii hurricane season - June through November. The last few years have seen increased activity around the islands, including Oahu, so it’s essential to monitor weather conditions when planning and taking your trip.

Accommodations wise, you'll find better deals during the months of April-May and August-November, when demand for rooms is lower. The holidays are the busiest time on the island, and the increased demand sends prices rocketing.

We've included the dates and months that most Oahu events are typically held below, but please be aware that currently, things are subject to change.

Visiting Oahu in January, February, or March

The winter months of January - March will be some of the coolest on the island, and you may want to keep a light jacket on you for the afternoons. There is still the chance for increased precipitation this time of year, but most of that rain will likely occur in earlier winter; Oahu starts to dry out a bit by March.

The Chinese New Year celebration falls in either January or February and features lion dances, night festivals, and fireworks. Also, if you are lucky during these months, you might have a chance to spot some whales; this is peak Humpback whale season in Hawaii.

• Sony Open in Hawaii (January) - The Sony Open is known to golf fans as the largest charity golf tournament in Hawaii. Since 1999, the event has raised nearly $20 million for non-profits. 
• Chinese New Year Festival (January) - Typically held at Chinatown Cultural Plaza (100 N. Beretania Street)
• Honolulu Festival (March) - Hawaii’s premier cultural event, promoting mutual understanding, economic cooperation, and ethnic harmony between the people of Hawaii and the Pacific Rim region.

Visiting Oahu in April, May, or June

The early spring months are the best time to visit Oahu . Temperatures are not yet as warm or hot as they'll be in the summer, and the large crowds have yet to materialize on the island; though, by June, visitor arrivals will increase significantly compared to the slower spring months. This is also one of the drier periods on the island, so it's a great time to visit weather-wise.

There are only two spring periods to potentially avoid if you're seeking to miss the crowds on Oahu. The first is Japan's "Golden Week" - usually held in April, which is a national holiday famous for bringing large numbers of visitors to Hawaii from Japan. The second period to potentially avoid is mid-to-late June, which can also be more crowded on-island.

• Waikiki Spam Jam (April) - Come and celebrate one of Hawaii’s favorite foods, spam.
• Lei Day Celebration (May) - Every May 1st, Oahu celebrates Lei Day, a festival celebrating Aloha in Hawaii.
• Lantern Floating Hawaii (May) - Held each Memorial Day at Ala Moana Beach Park, visitors can observe a beautiful assembly of lanterns floating on the ocean in memorial of lost loved ones.
• Kamehameha Day Celebrations (June) - Celebrating the life of King Kamehameha, who united the Hawaiian Islands.

Visiting Oahu in July, August, or September

The warmest weather will occur on Oahu during these summer months. The earlier summer also typically means increased visitation and crowds on-island, as many families travel to Oahu during these summer months. Crowds will tend to decrease heading into September.

• Hawaii State Farm Fair (July) - Started in 1962 by the Hawaii Farm Bureau (HFB), this fair is an opportunity to promote awareness of Hawaii’s agricultural and ranching industries.
• The Made in Hawaii Festival (August) - Showcases local artisans and culinary professionals.
• Aloha Festivals (August / September) -  A month-long festival, visitors can get to know Hawaiian culture at this free event celebrating Hawaiian heritage with music, dance, and historical showcases.

Visiting Oahu in October, November, or December

Early fall often can be a good time to visit Oahu, but keep in mind that the wetter weather will typically arrive starting in late October. Temperatures will be lower at this time of year, however, providing a welcome break from the summer warmth/heat.

If you're looking to catch some of the big waves on the North Shore, you'll probably want to visit during this period, when the surf is up. The best waves usually occur during December through mid-February. If you're lucky, you may also catch a glimpse of the humpback whales that spend their winters in the warm Hawaiian waters.

At the end of the year, Oahu celebrates the New Year celebration with fireworks displays throughout the island. The finale occurs at midnight, to top things off, with a massive fireworks show off the beach in Waikiki.

• Hawaiian Airlines Moloka'i Hoe (October) - Each year, over 1000+ paddlers from around the world compete in the Moloka'i Hoe, the men’s world championship in outrigger canoe racing.
• The Hawaii Food and Wine Festival (October) -  A three-week celebration of fine food and wine, featuring Chefs from around the world.
• Van’s Triple Crown (November - December) - For those seeking big waves & surfing, this is the time of year to be on Oahu’s famous North Shore.

Local Oahu Customs and Visitor Etiquette

This month also brings some of the  best deals on hotels and vacation rentals , with lower rates than most other times of year. It’s a good time for your wallet!

The beaches are less crowded  too, giving you more space to relax and listen to the waves.

Look out for  special events in November like coffee festivals on the Big Island or ukulele workshops across Maui.

Each island has its own charm this time of year – from Kauai’s peaceful gardens after an early morning drizzle to Oahu’s vibrant food scene bustling even under gray skies.

Expect comfort mixed with occasional adventure; it’s Hawaii showing off its quiet side before holiday festivities kick in.

You’ll want to plan your trip to Hawaii between  January and March for the chance to see whales. These giants of the ocean come to the warm Hawaiian waters to breed and give birth.

Maui’s shores  offer some of the most spectacular views, with Lahaina and Maalaea being prime spots for whale watchers.

On the Big Island, head over to the  Kohala Coast  where you can also get an excellent view.

*FOR EXPERIENCED SURFER* Catch  huge waves in Hawaii  from  November to February . This is when surfers flock to the  North Shore of Oahu for some of the world’s best surfing.

What is the Cheapest Hawaiian Island to Visit? (plus 4 ways to save)

When Jordan and I moved to Maui we were convinced that this was the most expensive of all the Hawaiian islands. When our friends and family come to visit, they’re paying an astronomical amount for hotel rooms. We soon started to wonder, if we think Maui is the most expensive, what is the cheapest Hawaiian island to visit?

Using data from Skyscanner.com, The Hawaii Tourism Authority , and Discount Hawaii Car Rental, the cheapest island to visit is Oahu. Airfare, hotel, and rental car for two people for a week costs $3,319 on Oahu. The most expensive Hawaiian island to visit is Maui, where the same average costs for a week are $5,321. 

How did we get this number? We break down the data below and show you how to save money regardless of what island you visit.  

Note : Prices quoted in this article are from March 2024 using average hotel pricing for July 2023 ( Hawaii Tourism Authority ) since hotel rates can vary wildly depending on the type of accommodations chosen. What is the Cheapest Hawaiian Island to Visit? Our Research Shows…

To determine which island was actually the cheapest to visit we looked at three different costs: airfare, lodging (hotels and vacation rentals), and rental car. 

Using these averages, we calculated the cost for a trip for two to each island for a week.

Here is what we found. 

Airfare to Hawaii

Ok, so you already know that our research shows that Oahu is the cheapest. Surprisingly though, it didn’t have the cheapest average airfare cost. Using Skyscanner, we looked up the average fare from LAX to each island for July 2024. 

We found that the cheapest airfare was actually to Kona on the Big Island, at $439 for a roundtrip ticket.

Data for the islands include:

• Big Island (Kona): $439 roundtrip
• Maui: $464 roundtrip
• Oahu: $527 roundtrip
• Kauai: $691 roundtrip

Lodging in Hawaii:

Staying in Hawaii can be expensive. Yes, there are plenty of options — hotels, rentals, and timeshares — but budget accommodations are few and far between. 

To get the average rate, we used data from the Hawaii Tourism Authority, which tracks average daily rates for hotels, vacation rentals, and timeshares. 

Yes, you could camp on the beach or sleep in your car and save a bundle of money. If that’s your plan, you can omit this from your personal calculation. But for the rest of us, here’s how the average hotel and vacation rental costs break down:

July 2023 average daily rate for hotel rooms:

• Oahu: $ 306
• Big Island: $442
• Kauai: $ 458
• Maui: $ 656

Basically, when it comes to lodging, the Big Island and Oahu are the cheapest option, which Kauai and Maui really firmly plant themselves in the most expensive category.

Rental Car in Hawaii

Our final input is the rental car. We used Discount Hawaii Car Rental for these estimates . You can check out our other car rental recommendations here .

• Oahu: $61 per day
• Maui: $65 per day
• Big Island, Kona: $65 per day
• Kauai: $66 per day

These rates are shockingly close, in previous years the difference between the most and least expensive island to rent a car on is around $20 per day.

Be mindful when booking your rental car as most people rent an intermediate car when visiting Kona and Maui. It’s likely because visitors want to drive to the volcanoes on each island or on the Road to Hana on Maui.

The Cheapest Hawaiian Island to Visit and the Most Expensive

Of course, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to put all of these costs together and get the real answer for which Hawaiian island is the cheapest and which is the most expensive to visit. 

Using a trip for two from LAX for seven days and six nights, this is the average cost when staying at a hotel:

Oahu is the cheapest Hawaiian island to visit, with a total cost of $ 3,319 .  

Maui is the most expensive island to visit , coming in at $2,000 more expensive, with a total cost of $5,321. 

Doing the same calculation but inputting vacation rental costs , rather than a hotel shows us that the Big Island pulls ahead slightly as the cheapest island to visit, and now Kauai is the most expensive.

How to Save Money on Your Trip to Hawaii, No Matter What Island You Visit

While the differences in average price can be significant, what will impact the total cost of your trip more is how you plan it. There are money-saving tips that you can implement, regardless of what island you decide to visit. 

Book Your Trip With Points

You don’t need to be a frequent flier or spend an absurd amount to get a few free nights at a luxury hotel in Hawaii. We’ve found the sweet spot of using welcome bonuses to offset the cost of our hotel stays.

Time it Right

If you can be flexible with your vacation schedule, you can save hundreds (or thousands) on your trip to Hawaii. You’ll get the same experience as someone paying double just by traveling during cheaper months.

According to Skyscanner , the cheapest time to fly to Hawaii is January . Data from f are detective shows that the cheapest time to fly to Hawaii is April . Looking for a flight during those two months can mean that you are paying hundreds less for the same flight another person is taking just a few months later.

Saving money on a flight is great. Saving money on your accommodation can really take a significant bite out of your budget. 

We looked through data from the Hawaii Tourism Authority and found that the cheapest months to book a hotel room in Hawaii are April , May , September , October , and November (aside from Thanksgiving week). 

The cheapest months to book a vacation rental are April , May , June , September , October , and November . The most expensive time to book a place to stay are during summer months (specifically July and August ) and the winter months .

Stay at a Vacation Rental

On all but three islands, the cost of a vacation rental is cheaper than the cost of a hotel. Kauai is the only island where vacation rental costs are actually on par with hotel costs. 

That aside, it’s probably still going to be better on your budget to choose a vacation rental. The average daily rate of a hotel room doesn’t take into account two very expensive fees you may encounter in Hawaii: resort fee and parking fee. 

For example, at the Koloa Landing Resort on Kauai, the resort fee is $35 per day. Hotels in Waikiki charge as much as $55 per day for self-parking. These extra fees can really add up.

You’ll also save money at a vacation rental by eating in. Eating out for every meal in Hawaii can really add up quickly. Renting a place with a kitchen can help you cut back on the costs.

Plan Out Your Activities

When you get to Hawaii, it’s easy to get sucked into wanting to do everything and wanting to do it right now! But one of the greatest things about visiting Hawaii is there is so much you can do for free or low cost if you get out and explore what the island has to offer. 

Hiking, scenic drives, waterfalls, snorkeling from the beach, and more.

But there will undoubtedly be other things that you want to do while you’re here. Plan and research these things before you go and pick based on value. 

For example, we always advise our friends to pick the best luau on Maui , regardless of the price. You’ll feel satisfied by doing a few great activities rather than doing a few mediocre, cheaper options.

And if you’re planning your activities out a little ahead of time, you can look for the best deals. For example, we go whale watching a number of times during the season. These trips can add up but by looking ahead and booking the early bird morning cruise, we can save 25% or more on each trip we do.

To Rent a Car or Not?

While a rental car is the smallest of the three costs we looked at, you may wonder if a rental car is right for your trip. From what we’ve heard, more visitors are ditching the rental and preferring to take a ride-sharing service when they want to get around. And we certainly saw plenty of people arriving at the Diamond Head hike via a taxi. 

The decision whether to rent a car or not comes down to what you want to do on your vacation. Do you expect to hang around the resort and maybe take a trip or two out? A rental car might not be the best choice for you. Or are you planning to do plenty of sightseeing and grocery shopping? The cost of a rental car might be well worth it. 

Taking the time to decide whether to book a rental car could save you hundreds.

How to spend the ultimate weekend on Oʻahu, Hawaii

There’s a reason why Oʻahu is nicknamed the Gathering Place – it’s the Hawaiian island that has everything.

Here you'll enjoy buzzy restaurants, golden beaches , luxe resorts, historic sites, walkable neighborhoods, trendy boutiques and hiking trails with breathtaking panoramic views.

Born and raised on the island, Oʻahu is more than just my home. It’s where I surfed my first wave, where I fell in love with hiking, where I always want to come back to after traveling elsewhere. It combines the excitement of city life with the laid-back island vibe of sunny beaches, verdant mountains and mai tais by the pool.

A long weekend may not be enough – but it’s a start. First, here are some quick tips to help you plan:

• When to arrive: Arriving on a Thursday morning is perfect. That way you’ll have a full day to rest and unwind before an extended 3-day weekend.
• How to get from the airport: It's best to rent a car at the airport. You’ll need one to explore the entire island (the  public bus system is great, with stops all over Oʻahu, but it’s faster to get around in a rental car). Rideshare is available, too; the average cost from the airport to Waikiki (about 9 miles) is $30.
• Getting around: The city bus has routes all over the island, with stops at the most popular visitor attractions on Oʻahu. The Waikiki Trolley offers limited routes, the farthest to Sea Life Park, about 15 miles from Waikiki. The  city’s only bikeshare program is available in urban Honolulu . To see all of Oʻahu, though, you’ll need a rental car.
• Where to stay: Of all the islands, Oʻahu has the most diverse range of accommodations, from budget-friendly  Hotel Renew in Waikiki to the luxe  Four Seasons Resort Oʻahu in Ko ʻOlina on the island’s west side. It’s the only island with a  Disney-themed hotel , complete with water slides and character-filled breakfast experiences.
• What to pack: Bring casual beachwear, something warm just in case, shoes you can walk and hike in, something dressy for dinner, swimwear, flip flops (we call them slippers) and reef-safe sunscreen.

Morning: Assuming you’re staying in Waikiki, wake up and head out early. Grab a bullet coffee or acai bowl at Sunrise Shack , a cute North Shore-based cafe started by surfers with a location in the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort . If you’re looking for a casual breakfast, head to Heavenly Island Lifestyle Waikiki ; this laid-back spot has a variety of brunch dishes, from sweet bread French toast with local honey and fruits to a spicy tomato shakshuka. Morning is the best time to walk along Waikiki Beach and watch surfers nab early waves.

How to spend the day: Waikiki is the birthplace of surfing – and it also happens to be the best place on the island to learn the sport. Book with locally owned Waikīkī Beach Services for a 75-minute lesson in the friendly waves where Native Hawaiian Olympians Duke Kahanamoku and Carissa Moore both grew up surfing. Or jump in an outrigger canoe – an important part of Hawaiʻi’s rich culture – to catch waves. This is the only place on the island where you can experience outrigger canoe surfing.

My go-to, post-surf lunch spot is Rainbow Drive-In on Kapahulu Ave. This local favorite, around for more than 60 years, serves hearty plate lunches and slush floats, which I highly recommend. For something lighter, get an ahi poke (cubed raw fish) bowl from nearby  ʻOno Seafood . Try the boiled peanuts – it’s a local specialty.

Dinner: Sip on handcrafted cocktails at sunset at Hau Tree , the oceanfront restaurant at the revamped Kaimana Beach Hotel. Share a bunch of small plates or splurge on the housemade pasta or fresh fish entrées. If you want to get out of Waikiki, Chinatown – about 4 miles west – boasts some of the island’s best restaurants, including Fête Hawaiʻi , a hip bistro with great cocktails and dishes inspired by French, Italian, Korean and Hawaiʻi flavors. In 2022, chef-owner Robynne Maii was the first female chef from Hawaii to win the prestigious James Beard Award, the state’s first in nearly 20 years. I’m obsessed with the Chaz burger, local-style carbonara and the Rocky Road to Hana ice cream. Reservations are required.

After dark: Oʻahu is the only Hawaiian island with a robust nightlife, and Waikiki is a great spot to find live music. Located in the Outrigger Waikīkī Beach Resort, Blue Note Hawaii is an intimate venue – just 326 seats with a full-service restaurant and bar – that hosts a range of musical and comedy talents, from LeeAnn Rimes to Rob Schneider. Halekūlani’s House Without a Key offers traditional hula and live Hawaiian music until 10pm.

Morning: Get an early start with a 30-mile drive to the North Shore along the Kamehameha Highway (that means heading east toward Kahuku.) The drive is part of the experience. This two-lane highway hugs the coastline, passing through rural towns, past roadside farm stands and stretches of empty beaches. Stop for a Spam musubi (block of rice with a slice of fried Spam on top, wrapped with a strip of nori) and butter mochi at the family-run Kaya’s Store in Hauʻula or a slice of chocolate- haupia (coconut) pie at Ted’s Bakery near Sunset Beach.

How to spend the day: If you’re on Oʻahu during the winter months, you’ll likely witness the spectacle surrounding the seasonal big waves. Beaches are packed with surfers and spectators, eager to catch the winter’s monster surf. During other times of the year, though, this stretch of coastline is quieter, the beaches less crowded. Laniakea Beach is a popular stop to see honu , or Hawaiian green sea turtles, basking on the beach (you have to stay at least 10ft away from them on land and in water). Or grab a snorkel – you can rent one from a surf shop – and hit Shark’s Cove, with natural rocky outcroppings that protect tide pools home to more than 70 fish species (this is a summer activity, as ocean conditions are calm). Feast on garlicky shrimp scampi from Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck or head to the roadside cafe at the family-run Kahuku Farms for a smoothie, slice of farm pizza or acai bowl, the ingredients of which are grown on-site.

Dinner: There’s nothing better than eating outdoors — except eating farm-to-table dishes crafted by James Beard Award-winning local chef Roy Yamaguchi. His restaurant, Roy’s Beach House at the recently updated Turtle Bay Resort , offers stunning ocean views and a menu that includes inventive sushi rolls, seafood and his signature molten chocolate cake. If you’re here on a Wednesday, the hotel’s Paniolo Lūʻau is worth checking out.

Morning: Catch the sunrise at the top of the Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail, better known as the Lanikai Pillbox Trail. It’s a 1-mile, mostly uphill trek to two concrete pillboxes built in early 1943. I park at Kailua Beach and walk to the trailhead, which is tucked away in a residential neighborhood. There’s no better view of the famous Nā Mokulua (“twin islands”) off Lanikai Beach. Then head to Over Easy , a casual family-run eatery that serves crispy-edged pancakes, Cinnamon Toast Crunch-crusted French Toast and (my favorite) potato ‘n‘ eggs.

How to spend the day: I regularly walk Kailua Beach , which stretches for 2.5 miles with views of Popoiʻa Island (aka Flat Island) and the Mokulua Islands. Enjoy a nice stroll or just sit and watch the action: kiteboarders, canoe paddlers, swimmers, folks walking their dogs. Stop at Kalapawai Market for a quick snack, sandwich or fish taco. This coastal town is very walkable, with cute boutiques, hip coffee shops and trendy restaurants all nearby. Treat yourself to shave ice at Island Snow Hawaiʻi ; the shop (which Hawaiʻi-born President Barack Obama frequents) boasts all-natural syrups in island flavors like lilikoʻi (passion fruit), guava, Kona coffee and dragon fruit. Then wander through the aisles of Bookends , a beloved new and used bookshop, where you can find beach (or airplane) reads for under $5. 

If you must now end your Oʻahu vacation, make the 30-minute drive from Kailua to the airport. If not, explore the rest of this beach town, to see what else Oʻahu has to offer. And trust me, there’s a lot more.

I’ve Lived in Hawaii Nearly All My Life — and These Are the Most Underrated Destinations in the Aloha State

From one of the only green-sand beaches in the world to the southernmost point in the U.S., these are the top places to visit in Hawaii, according to a local.

Hawaii has beckoned tourists away from their daily routines to experience paradise for years. Nearly 10 million people made the trek to the archipelago last year, a destination with a population of around 1.5 million. The Hawaiian islands offer accessible natural beauty throughout the year — from the mountains (known as mauka ) to the sea (called makai ). Think sun-drenched beaches with warm water, waterfalls hidden in rain forests, and sand in hues of white, black, and red. Perhaps what makes Hawaii so special to visitors is the spirit of aloha — a warm hospitality not found anywhere else — and a rich cultural heritage dating back centuries. 

Hawaii is one of the most coveted destinations in the world, but travelers often merely scratch the surface of what the state has to offer. As someone who grew up in Honolulu — a popular tourist stop — and resides there currently, I see it all the time, but I don’t blame them. Tourism has been significant in Hawaii for so long, it seems like everything has been touched by visitors. It can be hard to distinguish what’s worth the crowds and early mornings (to beat traffic) and what’s truly Hawaiian or local. 

Hawaii is more than meets the eye, and there’s a transformative experience awaiting visitors who want to go beyond the beaten path. If you’re looking to experience the spiritual power of the Aloha State's natural beauty and history, or see where the locals like to go , here are 10 underrated places to visit in Hawaii.

Waialae Avenue, Kaimuki

Located a short drive from Waikiki, Waialae Avenue is the artery of Honolulu’s quaint Kaimuki neighborhood. The stores, restaurants, and coffee shops lining the street pulsate with energy. If you’re looking to purchase locally crafted goods, Waialae Avenue has you covered. In fact, there’s an entire movement dedicated to supporting the small businesses of the area, known as Keep It Kaimuki . I’ll typically start my day with a shaken iced latte concocted with locally sourced coconut syrup from Bean About Town before hitting some of my favorite stores like Da Shop , which carries books from Hawaii-connected authors, and browsing the creations of local fashion designers at Ten Tomorrow .

Stargazing Along East Oahu

If the skies are clear, you should make time for a nighttime adventure. My suggestion is to drive east out of Honolulu and into Hawaii Kai. Take the windy Kalanianaole Highway (carefully) to the Halona Blowhole parking lot, or all the way past Sandy Beach Park and stop along the beach. Away from the city lights, the stars and moon glow brightly across the vast sky. Aside from the beautiful view, stars hold cultural significance to Hawaiians — for centuries, they’ve been used for storytelling, ceremonies, and wayfinding by voyagers.

People come to Hawaii for the beach , and while Waikiki may technically have one, it often feels too crowded to relax. For a true beach day, pack up some snacks and gear and head all the way west to Yokohama Bay. (Or, stop by Aloha Poke and grab a bowl of fresh rice and cubed ahi tuna to enjoy on the beach.) It’s the furthest west you can go on Oahu, and about a 1.-5-hour drive from Honolulu. Upon arriving, you'll be met with a wide stretch of golden sand that's surrounded by mountains. As long as there’s no northwest swell wrapping around the island, the turquoise waters are inviting. And since you’re facing the west, be sure to stay for the stunning sunset.

Lyon Arboretum

The flora of Hawaii is part of the state's allure: vibrant flowers like the plumeria and hibiscus; big, green, Jurassic Park-like foliage; and tropical fruits like mangoes and papayas that flourish naturally. The islands' distinctive geography and diverse climates give rise to a rich array of plant life, including unique endemic species that are exclusive to Hawaii, like the spiky, silver ʻāhinahina. You can spend some time learning about Hawaii's flora by visiting Lyon Arboretum in Honolulu’s Manoa neighborhood. Comprising 194 acres and more than 6,000 taxa of tropical and subtropical plants, Lyon Arboretum is a research center at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and an outdoor museum of living plants with a mission to conserve Hawaii’s rare and native plants. Guests can meander the hiking trails or check out the botanical gardens on their own or with a guided tour.

Nakalele Blowhole

The majestic power of Mother Nature can be seen throughout the islands, but Maui’s Nakalele Blowhole is one of the best places to witness that force up close. Getting to the blowhole, located on the northern part of the island, requires a windy and scenic drive along Honoapiʻilani Highway. The parking area offers a good vantage point for seeing the blowhole and its surrounding dramatic lava rock coastline — and humpback whales in the wintertime. The more adventurous can take a 20-minute hike down steep and rocky terrain to some tide pools, making sure to heed any warning signs along the way. Before embarking, make sure to check the tide is high; otherwise, there isn't enough water for the blowhole to erupt. If you’re lucky, there will be a local stand selling banana bread.

Petroglyphs at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Perhaps one of the top attractions throughout the islands, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a dynamic, ever-changing landscape thanks to its active volcanoes. While the volcanoes may steal the show, there are other parts of the park that are worth visiting, too. One of those lesser-known spots is the Pu‘uloa Petroglyphs , with pu‘uloa meaning “long hill.” Considered a sacred place, this archaeological site has more than 23,000 petroglyph images, including geometric shapes, canoe sails, and other motifs representing the life of ancient Native Hawaiians. Visitors can take a short hike through a 500-year-old lava field and view the fragile petroglyphs from a boardwalk.

Wailua River State Park

Nestled into the lush rain forests of the aptly named Garden Isle, the Iraivan Temple is remarkable for a few reasons: The South Asian temple design features ornate white granite intricately carved without power tools in Bangalore and India and assembled together on Kauai. Having the Hindu temple in Hawaii is also unique, as it gives visitors and locals a rare chance to experience Hindu philosophies. The backdrop of the Wailua River Valley, where an adjacent waterfall flows and there are many shades of green, adds to the tranquility. Visitors to the temple must book a reservation for personal meditation and worship. Once you've tapped into your serenity, spend some time in Wailua River State Park , less crowded than Waimea Canyon. The free state park is full of hiking trails to waterfalls and stunning views. For an immersive experience, take a two-mile river cruise filled with Hawaiian songs and stories by the family-owned Smith’s Kauai .

Hamakua Coast

While the Kohala Coast gets lots of attention for its sunshine, pristine beaches, and array of resorts, the Hamakua Coast is Hawaii Island’s more rugged, verdant counterpart, with vibrant valleys and majestic waterfalls in a magical, rainy setting. Start your drive from Hilo via the Hamakua Heritage Corridor. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to stop at botanical gardens, waterfalls, and scenic outlooks. You’ll likely hit some crowds at the more popular spots like Rainbow Falls and Waipio Valley Lookout, but if it’s your first time to the island, these locations are still worth a visit. I recommend stopping for lunch and a tour at Hawaiian Vanilla Co. , a small, family-owned farm that offers vanilla-themed dishes and a tasting tour. The drive ends in the agricultural town of Waimea, and if you don't stop for lunch at the vanilla farm, grab a burger at Village Burger Waimea, where the beef is as fresh and local as possible.

Hawaii Island offers travelers the chance to visit Ka Lae , the southernmost point in the U.S. Holding much cultural significance, Ka Lae (or “the point” in Hawaiian) is believed to be where the first Polynesian voyagers landed in Hawaii and one of the earliest settlements on the islands. Evidence of the ancient Hawaiians remains there to this day, including an ancient fishing shrine, marked by stone walls and a platform where fish was once prepared. To get there, drive to the end of South Point Road in Naʻalehu on Hawaii Island until you reach the 69 and 90 mile markers. You’ll be perched atop high cliffs where the ocean crashes below. Once you finish reveling in this sacred space, head over to Papakolea Beach, one of just four green-sand beaches in the world.

Hanalei Pier

Hanalei Pier is a must-visit spot on Kauai . Walk out onto the pier, where local kids like to jump off, and soak in the sweeping vistas of the bay, veiled in rain clouds and teeming with vibrant greenery. Hanalei is my favorite surf spot, where the cold river water meets the warm, salty sea. If you’re not experienced, you can always sit and watch people ride the waves, called heʻe nalu in Hawaiian. While in Hanalei, combine your visit with some responsible tourism and leave Hawaii better than when you arrived.

You can volunteer at the Waipā Foundation , a living learning center that perpetuates Hawaiian values and stewards more than 1,600 acres of land. Every fourth Saturday of the month, the public is welcomed to help take care of the land — whether reforesting native plants or restoring a fishpond — in an action called malama 'aina .

And it's from airports right across the United Kingdom including Manchester, Liverpool, London Stansted, East Midlands, Edinburgh and Belfast.
