San Antonio – variously known as “Alamo City,” the “River City” and “Military City” – is home to some truly iconic destinations and a few hidden gems.

A few common attractions are sure to show up on any to-do list: the  Alamo , the River Walk  and perhaps a trip to the blossoming Pearl District.

But once those boxes have been checked, what’s next? And when is the best time to see this city of many names at its best? Here’s when to go to San Antonio for festivals, food, the outdoors and more.

Visit in May to August to get outdoors in San Antonio

If you associate heat with San Antonio, you are not alone. By the time May rolls around, daily highs typically average between 85-95°F, with humidity above 60%. Despite this extreme heat, many locals invite friends and family to visit each summer. Because that is when San Antonio’s true colors can be seen.

And the best way to see those colors firsthand? Fireworks displays. Which happen all summer long.

Come Memorial Day, San Antonians celebrate that one out of every eight San Antonio residents is directly connected to the military in some way. This can be seen – and heard – in the sky throughout the summer.

People here truly love their fireworks. On July 4, the most extravagant (legal) displays can be found at Woodlawn Lake – but rest assured (local laws notwithstanding) that explosions can be seen and heard from almost any location come sundown.

By day, you can escape the heat with a long river float on the Comal River in nearby New Braunfels, take a dip on the beaches of Medina Lake or bring the whole family to San Pedro Springs.

January to April is party season, with the rodeo, Fiesta and more

Locals are partial to springtime in San Antonio: temperatures are at their most tolerable, and the city awakens as each flower blooms. The kickoff to the season is the  San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo  each February. Bring the kids to enjoy carnival rides and an opportunity to pet livestock – then come back later with friends for one of the many concerts that take place each night.

Visitors who can’t make it in time for the rodeo can still take advantage of the lower seasonal hotel rates to check out the Alamo on the anniversary of its battle (February 23), or set up a personal photo shoot in a field of bluebonnets (watch out for those rattlesnakes). You can even try and spot PGA legends at the Valero Texas Open .

But the real gem of the season is  Fiesta .

This annual multi-week celebration is one of San Antonio’s biggest draws. As April rolls around, Mission City plays host to countless parades, festivals and parties, kicking off with an Oyster Bake that draws 60,000–70,000 guests annually. Many parades occur throughout the celebration, most notably the Battle of Flowers Parade , the original official Fiesta event. Led by a passionate group of local women since 1891, this parade commemorates fallen heroes of the Alamo and San Jacinto Battles and is a local favorite (many in the area even get the day off work to celebrate).

Another key parade winds its way through San Antonio’s King William District toward the end of Fiesta, showcasing a collection of historic houses built by German settlers after the Civil War. The King William Parade and King William Fair  celebrate the neighborhood’s rich history and support the community each year.

NIOSA (Night in Old San Antonio), is the most exciting of all Fiesta's events. This four-night festival takes place in the heart of downtown and features food booths, dancing, original local artwork, lots of drinks and more bright colors than one can imagine.

This is the real San Antonio. According to the festival organizers, locals consume “17,000 lbs of beef; 11,000 lbs of chicken; 5000lbs of sausage; 3000 turkey legs; 25,000 buns; 30,000 tortillas; 2000lbs of masa; 6000 tamales; 15,000lbs of fruits and vegetables; and 1000lbs of guacamole.” How could anyone resist such Texas-sized excess?

Watch the city twinkle for the holidays from September to December

Once summer has come and gone, the tourist season also begins to wane – which means great deals on lodging. Still, there is plenty to see throughout the fall without worrying about the imposing summer sun.

Fright fans can head to the area amusement parks for seasonal spookiness and the  13th Floor Haunted House  on Commerce St is a long-standing Halloween tradition.

Perhaps the prettiest way to see local icons the Alamo and River Walk is when they’re twinkling with holiday lights. In December, layer-wearing visitors take rides on riverboats beneath the cascading colored lights hanging from the bald cypress trees overhead. While the city no longer decorates a tree in  Alamo Plaza , there is no shortage of holiday spirit to be found there, with carolers and Santas spotted daily.

In true San Antonio tradition, the city wouldn’t be able to ring in the new year without another incredible light show. Visitors looking to celebrate New Year’s Eve should head down to Hemisfair Plaza to watch the official fireworks display illuminate the downtown skyline.

When is the best time to visit San Antonio?

Are you planning a visit to San Antonio? As a person who’s lived here for 10+ years, let me be the first to say, “Howdy!”

If you have some wiggle room with planning your vacation to the Alamo City, it’s a good idea to plan your trip around the weather and local events.

While a quick Google search will tell you that the average temperature in San Antonio is 72 degrees year-round, locals know better. Depending on when you visit, you might be contending with torrential downpours, terrible heat, or an empty events calendar. And where’s the fun in that?

If it’s your first time in San Antonio, here are the best times of the year to visit, as well as what there is to do in San Antonio—courtesy of a longtime local.

The best time to visit: Spring (March – June)

In my humble opinion, the best time to visit San Antonio is in the spring. The temperatures are absolutely wonderful, ranging from a low in the 50s to a high of 70s – 80s by the afternoon. It’s also the only time of year when you’ll see hints of this green stuff people call “grass” growing in our usually-sparse parks and lawns.

Aside from the weather, spring is also the best time to visit San Antonio for one big reason: Fiesta !

Fiesta is a month-long, citywide party celebrating San Antonio’s Mexican heritage. But it’s about a lot more than that. Fiesta is equal parts a small business support campaign, beauty pageant, food extravaganza, dance party, and an all-around good time. It’s one of San Antonio’s most famous attractions, pulling even the most sheltered locals into bustling tourist areas of downtown San Antonio.

The biggest downside to visiting San Antonio in the spring, though, is the rain. May and June are the rainiest months in San Antonio, with an average of 4 – 5 inches of rain every month (or more). And it comes down in buckets .

As long as you pack a decent umbrella and a pair of rain boots, you’ll be all right. San Antonio rain showers rarely last all day, and even if they do, there’s a good chance your plans will simply move indoors.

The second-best time to visit: Fall (October – November)

Fall is remarkably short in San Antonio, which makes it a true treat for locals, who hate the 100-degree days of summer. While fall tends to be hotter than spring, it’s still a great time to be in San Antonio, with temperatures in the 70s – 90s. Sure, you might still want to wear shorts and flip-flops, but fall in San Antonio definitely beats the summer.

Thanks to the milder temperatures, fall in San Antonio makes for some great outdoor exploring. Our city has gorgeous outdoor spaces, so take advantage of them! I recommend going for a walk in Phil Hardberger Park , where you can enjoy natural South Texas flora and fauna. If you’re up for a bike ride, visit the Greenway trails , which stretch on for 20+ miles through San Antonio.

If you’re in the mood for festivals, you’re in luck! San Antonio puts on one of the best Dia De Los Muertos (Day of The Dead) celebrations in the United States. National Geographic said so !

Snack on a sugar skull, stuff your gullet with  the best tamales , and watch processions of colorful dancers frolic to live music. Dia De Los Muertos is a colorful, family-friendly event that San Antonians love, so celebrate like a local if you’re in town in the fall.

The third-best time to visit: Winter (December – February)

How you feel about Texas winter is … relative. Texans think it’s miserable, while folks from the North tend to flock here for the milder temperatures.

The crazy thing about San Antonio in the winter is that the temps fluctuate wildly.

One Christmas, my family came to visit and we went to Sea World. It was December 26 and it was nearly 90 degrees. Another Christmas, it was windy, cold, and awful.

San Antonio winters are milder than winters up north, and you likely won’t see snow. But with temperatures in the 30s to the 80s, winters are unpredictable, which makes for tricky traveling.

The good news is that, even if it’s chilly, we get enough sunshine in San Antonio that colder temperatures are still much more bearable!

It’s more common to see indoor events, like concerts, in San Antonio during the winter. Events like San Antonio Zoo Lights and Christmas At The Caverns are a MUST, whether you’re a local or a visitor.

If you want to see the River Walk in all its glory, I recommend checking out the Holiday Lights on the River Walk . The city lights up over 100,000 lights across the River Walk, which makes for a gorgeous walk. They also do Holiday Boat Caroling down the San Antonio River!

There’s plenty to see in San Antonio during the winter, but I do recommend layering your clothes and buying a hot chocolate to overcome the chill.

The worst time to visit: Summer (July – September)

Yes, I know September is technically “fall,” but in San Antonio, I assure you it’s still summer. I knew how bad San Antonio summers would be when I moved here, but I never quite get over how H-O-T it is.

It isn’t unheard of for the temperatures to exceed 100 degrees by August. If you combine that with the high humidity and relentless sun, summer in San Antonio is awful .

I know people want to visit while the kids are out of school. There’s nothing wrong with that! But if you have to see San Antonio in the summer, I highly recommend going as early in the summer as possible. July temperatures are still somewhat reasonable, but August and September are one big, sunny hellscape.

San Antonio’s theme parks (Fiesta Texas and Sea World) are popular in the summer, but it’s so miserably hot that you’ll walk away with a sunburn—and possibly even dehydration.

If you do visit San Antonio in the summer, I recommend bringing a hat, sunblock, a misting fan, and a refillable water bottle.

What’s The Weather In San Antonio ACTUALLY Like? Here’s A Month-by-Month Guide

With 250+ days a year of sunshine, San Antonio is an outstanding destination for those looking to spend some time in the great outdoors. Visitors to SA can *almost* be guaranteed blue skies, sunlight, and warmth nearly year-round, meaning your trip to the Riverwalk, Alamo, or historical Missions (all outside activities), should be lovely. To help you capitalize on the weather here, we have compiled a brief rundown of the annual weather in San Antonio, including a month-by-month guide.

Annual Weather in San Antonio

What kind of climate does San Antonio, Texas have?

The science-y answer is a “transitional humid sub-tropical” climate. Humid sub-tropical climates are marked by hot, humid summers, and cool to mild winters.

The transitional piece means that we border on a semi-arid climate with less rainfall than much of the country.

What is San Antonio known for, weather-wise?

San Antonio weather is known for having lots of sun and for being hot and humid. For much of the year, this is the case. And when it isn’t, it is mostly mild, with gorgeous winters.

There can, however, be major variations in the weather on any given day. There’s a running joke here that if you don’t like the weather, just wait ten minutes.

It’s not at all uncommon in the fall, winter, and spring, to have a day in the 80s, followed by a day in the 40s, followed by a day of torrential rain, followed by months of heat and sun. Locals just know to go with it.

Does San Antonio have four seasons?

Annual Weather in San Antonio

Not really, no. At least, not in the way that most people think of four seasons with distinct temperature changes and weather patterns.

Summers are the dominant season in San Antonio, lasting from May to October.

The winter months are short and mild (with no snow in the forecast), lasting from December to February.

Then we cram in spring in March and April and autumn in November, but temps are still usually much warmer during those months than elsewhere in the country, meaning they lack the classic feels of spring and fall.

*Fun fact, the leaves here don’t fall in the fall, they fall in the spring. The majority tree species is the Live Oak which doesn’t drop its leaves in autumn but drops leaves when the new leaves bud out in the spring and push out the old leaves from the year before. (And yes, there are some leaves that will drop in the fall from other species, but they are in the large minority).

Does it rain a lot in San Antonio?

Annual Weather in San Antonio

San Antonio has an average rainfall of 33 inches per year. While not exactly qualifying us as a desert, this is certainly on the lower side of the spectrum for annual rainfall.

Generally, you can expect some rain almost every month , including the occasional thunderstorm, though not every day or even every week.

RELATED: things to do in San Antonio (that aren't alamo)

Does it ever snow in San Antonio?

Almost never, but not quite never. In the 20 years, we have lived in SA, it has snowed three times, two of which were fairly substantial. It does ice though, and with some regularity.

There is, on average, about one ice event each winter which will completely shut down the city for 1-3 days as the city isn’t prepared to manage long-term icy road conditions.

Does San Antonio ever experience natural disasters?

San Antonio may just be the best city in America for natural disaster avoidance.

With almost no snow, we don’t experience blizzards.

We aren’t located near a fault line so earthquakes are a non-entity.

We are 130 miles inland from the coast, so barring a perfect coastal hit of a severe storm that moves with tremendous speed directly to the city, we aren’t at risk of hurricanes.

And in the last 20 years, only one tornado, an EF1, has hit the city.

The only true natural disaster we are at risk for is flooding, though it isn’t a huge risk given how much rain we get each year.

What is the coldest month in San Antonio?

January is usually the coldest month of the year.

What is the hottest month in San Antonio?

July and August hand down. They are essentially one long, hot month.

What is the best month to visit San Antonio?

Annual Weather in San Antonio

November and December are, in our opinion, the best months to visit San Antonio as they are marked by mild, comfortable weather, and lots of sun.

But, if you can’t make it then, we recommend scheduling your SA visit anytime between the months of November and April as you will have the best chance of experiencing optimal weather conditions.

This also happens to be the party season in San Antonio with the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo occurring in February and Fiesta San Antonio taking place in April.

How should I pack for my visit to San Antonio?

Annual Weather in San Antonio

The key is preparation. Keep an eye on the forecast for a few weeks before your trip, and then watch it like a hawk in the 5 days leading up to your vacation. This will give you the best idea of what type of weather you will experience while visiting Alamo City. Once you know what to expect, pack accordingly.

*Pro tip: Even if it is going to be ridiculously hot while you are here, bring a lightweight jacket or sweater along. Restaurants, shops, and theaters will often compensate for the heat by over air-conditioning and it can be miserable to feel like you are taking your meal in an icebox while shivering throughout the experience. An extra layer will go a long way in helping you enjoy your time indoors.

January is, on average, the coldest, driest month of the year with average highs around 62°, and lows around 39°.

January can be a fantastic month to visit given the combination of mild weather and sunny days, without the punishing effects of humidity.

However, random cold fronts (hilariously referred to as “Arctic snaps” in the local news media) can blow in from time to time making for a few days of bitter misery, though not nearly bitter enough to actually be “Arctic.”

February is very similar to January with average highs in the mid-60s and lows around 42°, with gradual warming as March approaches.

Typically, rain chances stay minimal throughout the month of February so don’t expect too much moisture.

Again, February can be a lovely time to visit (come for the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo ) but can also be a nightmare too!

In the last few years, February has produced some crazy weather including 2-3 days of ice in 2023, and a major winter storm in 2021 that saw nearly a week of record lows (we’re talking temperatures in the tens and teens), record snowfall, and ice, resulting in massive, widespread power outages as the Texas grid failed to keep up with the demand. While that is certainly the exception and not the rule, be prepared for the possibility that your SA trip will coincide with a cold front that has the potential to shut down the city.

With warming temps, March is when spring really begins in San Antonio. Average highs are around 74° and lows are around 50°.

March is still a fairly dry month, but rain chances will slowly start increasing. Given the usual beautiful weather, March is typically a great time to visit San Antonio, that is, unless you have allergies.

As the temperature warms, the Live Oak trees, the most common trees in SA, will start budding and create a “weather” event that those of us in the Alamo city call, the “pollening.” One morning, sometime in the middle of March, SA residents will awaken to find that everything outside – sidewalks, streets, cars, trash cans, pets – is covered in a yellowish/greenish layer of pollen. Almost like a light dusting of snow that occurs in a short matter of hours.  If you suffer from seasonal allergies or hay fever, March can be brutal, so do your research.

April is a significantly warmer and wetter month than March, with highs in the 80s, lows around the upper 50s, and a chance of precipitation 2x what it is normally in March.

April tends to dance back and forth between spring and summer so it can be a nice time to visit with balmy weather, or it can start to get really hot and humid. Bear in mind, the allergy conditions remain painful throughout April but will taper off next month.

If you plan to come in April, try to time your visit to coincide with Fiesta San Antonio. For more information, check out our complete guide to Fiesta San Antonio .

You know the old adage; April showers bring May flowers. Well, in San Antonio, April flowers give way to May showers as May is, on average, the wettest month of the year in the city, with almost 5 inches of average rainfall over the course of the month.

Highs will regularly hover around 90° and lows will be in the low 70s. And with the added moisture, the humidity in May will begin to rise.

Hello, summer! The heat is officially on with highs in the mid-90s and consistent lows for the next three months around the mid-70s.

Humidity will continue making each day both hot and sticky. Rain chances stay fairly high for the remainder of this month before decreasing next month.

July and August (aka the hell months)

Long and hot – that’s July and August for you. The two hottest months of the year happen to fall back-to-back and make for a painstaking 2+ months of heat and humidity where every day is just about the same – blistering and uncomfortable.

The average high will be in the upper 90s and lows in the mid-70s. The bulk of the year’s triple-digit heat will occur during these two months (though 100+ days usually begin sometime in June and end sometime in September).

If you can picture a bell curve in your mind with the peak happening in July/August, September will mirror June, and begin to see an easing of temperatures.

But don’t get out your winter coats just yet – highs will remain in the low 90s and lows in the low 70s, with a slightly higher chance of precipitation than exists the two previous months.

It may be fall in the rest of the United States, but September is still fully entrenched in summer in south Texas.

October provides a welcome respite from the heat as temperatures really start to cool off, making October look a lot like a wetter version of April.

Average highs are around 82° and lows are around 59° .

You will likely be able to wear shorts and short sleeves for much, if not all, of the month of October, but you will no longer be cooking in your car or sweating buckets anymore.

Blessed November – the month that locals have been waiting for.  November is usually a beautiful time in SA with daily highs around 70° and lows in the upper 40s .

Rain chances exist but are in the process of decreasing as the days head into winter, meaning November is usually sunny, dry, and gloriously mild. If you are planning a trip to the Alamo City – come now!

“Winter” weather begins in earnest in San Antonio in December with average highs around 64°, lows around 41° , and minimal rain chances.

No white Christmases here, just lots of sun and brisk, though not exactly cold, temperatures.

Many agree that the best way to see San Antonio is by taking a stroll along the River Walk, or Paseo del Rio . San Antonio's most-visited tourist attraction meanders along the banks of the San Antonio River through the center of the city, connecting major attractions like Brackenridge Park and the San Antonio Museum of Art . Flanking the River Walk are dozens of restaurants, boutique hotels and sidewalk cafes shaded by colorful umbrellas. Street performers often fill the air with mariachi music.

If you want to see the River Walk from a different vantage point, try a boat tour. GO RIO offers a variety of cruises, including two-hour dinner cruises, short narrated excursions, private charters and river shuttle service from downtown to Museum Reach. Ticket fees vary depending on what type of journey you want, but you can expect to pay at least $14.50 per person, with discounts for locals, children, seniors and military members.

The Alamo The Alamo free

If there's one thing San Antonio is known for, it's the Alamo. Once a Franciscan mission, it was here that 189 Texans fought and lost their lives in 1836 during a 13-day siege by Mexican ruler, President Antonio López de Santa Anna. The fight sparked Texas' struggle for independence and today, the Alamo stands as a tribute to these men, displaying artifacts belonging to some of the Alamo's most famous defenders, including Davy Crockett and James Bowie. Visit the Alamo Church on your own or by guided tour, and then check out the many other sites of interest and artifacts on the grounds. These include the Long Barrack (the Alamo's oldest building), the Alamo Exhibit (featuring more than 500 artifacts), restored historic cannons and the Statues of Heroes, bronze statues of Alamo soldiers in the Cavalry Courtyard. At the Living History encampment, visitors can learn more about frontier life in early Texas through hands-on demonstrations.

Recent visitors said the site can get rather busy, so try to visit early in the morning or later in the evening. Most travelers also agree that even when it's packed with tourists, the Alamo is a must-see site.

Brackenridge Park Brackenridge Park free

When the River Walk seems too busy, seek refuge from the heat and the swarms of tourists in Brackenridge Park. Its 343 acres offer much in the way of relaxation: rustic stone bridges and shaded walkways are perfect for strolling, and the Japanese Tea Garden beckons to botanists. Dress casual so you can take advantage of Brackenridge's jogging trails, golf course and athletic fields. The park also hosts outdoor concerts in the natural Sunken Garden Theater. In and around the park, you'll find popular attractions like the Witte Museum and the San Antonio Botanical Garden (about a half-mile east).

Past visitors appreciated the park's train, which runs through the zoo and offers an excellent opportunity to get around the large area. The park is also a featured stop on many of the best San Antonio tours .

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park San Antonio Missions National Historical Park free

Aside from the Alamo , this is where all of San Antonio's historic missions – Mission San José, Mission Concepción, Mission Espada and Mission San Juan – are located, making this a must-see site for history buffs. Established along the San Antonio River in the 18th century by Franciscan friars, the missions stand as a reminder of Spanish colonizers' success in spreading Catholicism through the Southwest and into Mexico. Each mission is beautiful in its own way, from the undisturbed frescos at Mission Concepción to the Romanesque arches of Mission San Juan. Scattered around the missions are remnants of granaries, workshops and water mills.

The missions have complicated stories, as many Native Americans who lived within the missions adapted to the Spanish way of life (sometimes willingly), forgoing their religions, languages and customs. However, the missions still retain many of Native American influences including the building frescoes and mission customs. In honor of this history, the park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.

San Fernando Cathedral San Fernando Cathedral free

If you're touring San Antonio, the San Fernando Cathedral is hard to miss. Still an active house of worship, the cathedral is one of the oldest in the country, constructed in the mid-1700s by colonists from the Canary Islands . It was here that Wild West legend James Bowie was married and that General Antonio López de Santa Anna indicated his plans for the Alamo . Local legend claims that many heroes from the Alamo battle (including Davy Crockett) are buried here in an unmarked tomb. Despite enduring damage from a fire in the 19th century, the San Fernando Cathedral maintains its antique appearance, beckoning you to tour its breathtaking interior.

While the interior is open during the day, travelers insist that you visit the church at night to take advantage of the free light show. Every Tuesday through Sunday at 9 and 9:30 p.m., a dazzling video art installation entitled "The Saga" is projected onto the building's facade.  You'll want to double-check the Main Plaza website to make sure the show is occurring.

You can also take an in-depth look back through Texas' intriguing past by exploring the historic log cabins located on the grounds. And don't forget to check out the rotating special exhibitions covering space and other fascinating topics.

This quirky site has grown in popularity over the years, and visiting families say its collections and interactive features entertain children of all ages.

Morgan's Wonderland Morgan's Wonderland

Morgan's Wonderland is the world's only amusement park designed for children of all abilities. This sprawling, inclusive park was designed by former homebuilder Gordon Hartman — in honor of his daughter, Morgan, who has cognitive and physical disabilities – along with a local team of medical experts, engineers and therapists. There are more than 25 accessible attractions, rides and play areas, including a deluxe carousel, a Ferris wheel, an amphitheater, a catch-and-release fishing lake and a sensory play center. There's also a water park: Morgan's Inspiration Island.

In addition to the accessible rides, families appreciate the friendly, welcoming staff and affordable food offerings. They also like that you can bring in outside food, beverages and coolers, should you want your own refreshments.

Ruby City Ruby City free

Ruby City is a contemporary art center with a unique origin story. Shortly before artist and megacollector Linda Pace passed away in 2007, she had a vision for a home for her collection of more than 800 pieces of art – a vision that literally came to her in a dream. Pace drew the images from her dream and passed them on to renowned architect Sir David Adjaye, who designed the bright crimson structure. Today, this 14,000-square-foot space is a treasure trove of paintings, sculptures and installations from both local and international artists such as Joan Mitchell, Marina Abramovic and Donald Moffett.

Visitors love Ruby City for its incredible architecture, thought-provoking exhibits and beautiful grounds.

Japanese Tea Garden Japanese Tea Garden free

Featuring koi ponds, arched bridges, shaded paths and a 60-foot waterfall, the Japanese Tea Garden is an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Antonio. Developed in 1917, the garden is located in a former rock quarry, which may surprise some given how lush the landscape is today. Native and adaptive Texas tree species abound, and the tiered gardens and floral display are in bloom throughout the year. The restaurant at the garden, Jingu House, offers tasty bites (spring rolls, sandwiches, salads and bowls) and a menu of beer, wine and sake cocktails, if you need to refuel during your visit.

Families with kids, friends, couples and solo visitors all find this tranquil green space enjoyable. Many people come here for a photo-op (it's widely regarded as one of the prettiest places in the city).

Schlitterbahn New Braunfels Schlitterbahn New Braunfels

U.S. News Insider Tip: Plan to visit on a weekday and get there as early as possible, if you want to avoid the crowds. It also helps to familiarize yourself with the park's layout before you go to stake out the best (shadiest) spots. – Justine Harrington

The original Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels is at the top of many Texans' summer bucket lists (yes, for adults and kids alike). Overlooking the green, glassy Comal River, this 70-acre water park features a huge variety of pools, river rides and waterslides. When the state's sweltering temperatures take over, there's no better reprieve than lazily tubing the Kristal River; slipping and sliding down body slides like Downhill Racer and Soda Straws; or sipping a frozen cocktail at a swim-up bar.

DoSeum DoSeum

Children of all ages are in for a treat at the DoSeum. With 68,000 square feet of interactive exhibit space, there's enough here to keep young brains and bodies engaged for hours. This is just the tip of the iceberg at the DoSeum, whose exhibits are all designed with a sustainable, creative approach and a strong STEM focus.

Parents recommend arriving early or visiting during the week to avoid long lines. Most say their kids had a great time, but a few note upkeep issues, such as broken and sticky exhibit pieces.

The Buckhorn Saloon & The Texas Ranger Museum The Buckhorn Saloon & The Texas Ranger Museum

It doesn't get more Texas than The Buckhorn Saloon. Visitors can enjoy a beverage at a historic saloon and check out the mounts of more than 500 species of exotic wildlife from around the world. Afterwards, peruse authentic Texas Ranger artifacts including guns, badges, photographs and more at the on-site Texas Ranger Museum. Pick up a cowboy hat at the gift shop to complete the experience.

If you're at all squeamish about taxidermies, visitors recommended skipping this attraction. The food at the cafe hits the spot. Try the Buckhorn Burger or the Lone Star Chili Bowl, and wash it all down with a Buckarita, a refreshing mix of tequila and prickly pear juice. There's a kids' menu, too.

The Best Time to Visit Texas

best weather to visit san antonio texas

With many historical attractions, natural landmarks, and big cities, Texas has a lot to offer visitors, from outdoor activities to indoor attractions. But when should you visit?

The best time to visit Texas is in early spring, between late March and April. Winter's chill is gone throughout much of the state, the wildflowers are in bloom, and summer's scorching temperatures haven't arrived yet.

The Weather in Texas

Texas is a big state and thus, weather conditions throughout the year can vary dramatically depending on location. In general, the state has a combination of three different climates: continental, mountain, and marine. Most areas have hot and humid summers and relatively mild winters.

The Eastern portion of Texas experiences a subtropical climate, with very warm summers and high humidity. The central portion of the state has dry summers, but equally arid (albeit cold) winters , and the remainder of the state is mostly a sub-tropical arid climate. Higher elevations, such as the Guadalupe Mountains in the west, experience cooler mountain climates.

Because of the dramatic variations throughout the state, temperatures can fluctuate wildly as well. It's not unusual for Amarillo, in the state's northern panhandle, to experience a snow shower while it's 70 degrees Fahrenheit in Dallas.

Hurricanes and Tornadoes in Texas

Houston and its nearby coast areas are subject to hurricanes from June through November. Tornadoes are a possibility throughout much of the state most of the year, however, they are most common from March through August. More than 100 tornadoes typically hit Texas during any given year.

January is typically one of the coldest months in Texas, but it is still mild enough to spend time outdoors—without the heat and humidity. Avid anglers, golfers, runners, and other outdoors-lovers will enjoy the Lone Star State in the winter.

Events to check out:

  • Texas starts years the way it ends them: with football. Taking over the NFL Cowboys' AT&T Stadium in Dallas each late December/early January, the Cotton Bowl has been hosting two of college football's best teams since 1937.
  • The World's Longest Causeway Run and Wellness Walk stretches from Port Isabel to South Padre Island, a 10-kilometer run (and alternately, a 5-kilometer walk) across the Queen Isabella Causeway.
  • The San Antonio Coffee Festival is an all-day celebration of all things java, and a great chance to explore the La Villita Historic Arts Village on downtown's River Walk.

February is usually the last month of winter in Texas—although freak spring ice storms have been known to happen. Like January, temperatures are usually still quite mild although some of the state's northern reaches will experience snow and ice.

  • Held in February, the San Antonio Rodeo and Stock Show is one of the largest and longest running annual rodeo and stock show events in the nation. The event runs for two weeks.

March in Texas offers birding, flower trails, fishing, and, of course, spring break. This month is the peak of the state's bluebonnet bloom, which results in visitors flocking to the Texas Hill Country in hopes of spying fields loaded with the bright blue flowers.

  • South By Southwest (SXSW) takes place in Austin in March. The popular music festival incorporates tech panels, film, and other media.
  • Houston holds their stock show and rodeo in March. The event features the largest indoor livestock show and rodeo in the world.

Spring in Texas is generally beautiful but can also usher in a potpourri of weather across the state. You can expect everything from hot temperatures, cold temperatures, rain, snow, and anything in between on any given day in April. Don't let that discourage you, though—in general, April is mild and pleasant.

  • The tiny town of Poteet hosts its annual Strawberry Festival in April. The event draws more than 100,000 visitors.
  • Houston holds its Bayou City Cajun Festival in April. The city's proximity to Louisiana means that it retains many Cajun cultural and culinary traditions—and this festival celebrates them all.

Temperatures typically warm up across the state in May for good. Dallas, for example, averages around 85 degrees Fahrenheit during this month. Intense spring thunderstorms—some of which include hail and lightning—aren't uncommon.

  • Head to the Texas Hill Country to celebrate the Kerrville Folk Festival , which has run continuously since 1972. The 18-day festival features over 100 songwriters, concerts, arts and crafts, concerts for kids, and more.
  • Pasadena hosts its annual Strawberry Festival in May. This Texas favorite has strawberry eating and cooking contests, as well as barbeque, live music performances, and more.

June is typically warm and muggy across the state. This is the first full month that schools are out of session, so you can expect crowds of families at most of the state's most popular attractions.

  • Held in Bowie, Texas, Jim Bowie Days hosts a rodeo, a fishing tournament, a car show, and more every June. The town is named for the legendary Texas figure.
  • Dr. Pepper celebrates the soft drink with a June birthday celebration. The Dr. Pepper Birthday Celebration includes carnival games and food booths, as well as tours of the factory.

July is the first full month of summer—and it feels like it. This is usually the hottest month, but just about every outdoor activity imaginable is available to Texas visitors. There are plenty of great festivals and events during July, including several centered around the Fourth of July.

  • If you want to celebrate one of Texas's flying pests, head to Clute for the Great Texas Mosquito Festival . This annual event features a cook-off, a washer pitching tournament, karaoke, and a mosquito-themed fun run.
  • Virtually every Texas town celebrates the Fourth of July, but Luckenbach, one of the state's smallest towns, holds a great Independence Day celebration that includes a massive picnic.

August is still hot, hot, hot, but the thunderstorms that come along with early summer have usually died down. Most Texas kids head back to school during this month.

  • The Texas International Fishing Tournament is the largest saltwater fishing tournament in Texas and is held each year in the waters around Port Isabel and South Padre Island. The tournament has bay, offshore, and fly fishing divisions and draws around 1,500 participants.
  • Held in Wichita Falls, the Hotter'N Hell 100 attracts over 13,000 cyclists from across the country who then ride a grueling, 100-mile bike course in the August heat.

While the arrival of fall up north means some brisk days, September in Texas still mostly feels like summer, with plenty of warmth and sun. The seasonably mild weather comes along with food, music, nature, and, of course, football.

  • Running from late September into October, the State Fair of Texas in Dallas is the state's largest fair and stock show. The month-long event features everything from art shows to carnival rides, and of course, plenty of fair food.

During early fall , the sometimes oppressive heat of summer is gone, making outdoor activities much more pleasant. Although fall finds the cooler weather in Texas, the temperature is still warm enough to allow almost any type of outdoor activity. Fishing, hunting, camping, birding, and even water sports activities are viable fall vacation options.

  • The Texas Renaissance Festival kicks off at the end of September and runs through November. The festival features New Market Village, a recreation of an English town.
  • Oktoberfest celebrates the state's rich German heritage during the first week of October. Held in downtown Fredericksburg, the event features German food, drink, and music.

The continuation of cooler fall weather in November makes sight-seeing a joy, which is perfect as tourists will experience the advantage of reduced traffic during the autumn season. Texas guests will love being able to move more freely and add more to their outdoor list.

  • The Terlingua International Chili Cookoff is held the first weekend in November in tiny Terlingua, near Big Bend National Park. The event is considered one of the most prestigious chili cookoffs in the country.

With the New Year coming up and the holiday season in full swing, Texas has plenty to celebrate in December. There are light trails and parades, college football bowl games, and unique fairs and festivals, all set against the state's generally mild winter weather.

Events to Check Out

  • Held during the peak of the holiday season, the BMW Dallas Marathon spans a 26.2-mile course around the city's most scenic urban lake.
  • Football-crazy Texas hosts multiple college bowl games and high school playoffs each December.

Spring is the best time to visit Texas, particularly from mid-March to mid-May. The weather is mild, the wildflowers are in bloom, and you can often find deals on hotels.

July and August are the hottest months in Texas, especially in the southern part of the state. On the Gulf Coast, the summer weather isn't just hot but it's muggy, too.

Spring sees the most rainstorms in Texas, but they are usually short and intense instead of long and drawn out.

The Best Riverfront Towns To Visit In America

T ake a look at towns worldwide, and regardless of what continent they're on, what language their population speaks, or what their economic status is, one theme emerges -- many of them are built around rivers. That's no accident. When many of these towns were founded centuries ago, rivers offered endless resources to residents. Rivers provided fresh water, homes to local animals and plants that could be used as food sources, cleanliness since they could remove waste, and cheap transportation of goods from food to building materials.

The same applies in America, where rivers have not only allowed towns to make it to modern times but have also served as tourist destinations, offering art havens, restaurants, shops, historic sites, tours, and outdoor activities. To create this list of the best riverfront towns in the country, Explore researched the many riverfront towns in America through tourism websites, blogs, and travel guides. Our mission was to find the ones with the most attractions that also use their rivers to formulate their identities, as detailed at the end of this article.

San Antonio, Texas

When missionaries and Indigenous people called what's now San Antonio home, they relied on the freshwater of the San Antonio River every day of their lives to cook, drink, eat, travel, and more. Today, the modern city of San Antonio still uses the river similarly to its former residents through the San Antonio River Walk, which includes 8 miles of pathways around the river. Surrounding the river and lining the River Walk, which is also Texas's most-visited destination, are countless restaurants, hotels, shops, museums, and more. Plus, depending on the season, it's also where San Antonio's river parades, artisan markets, holiday lights, and kids' activities take place. Unsurprisingly, this municipality is known as one of the underrated cities in America's South that you shouldn't skip visiting .

One of the best ways to get an overview of the River Walk is to hop on a river taxi tour, which takes visitors to the various points of interest surrounding the River Walk that go far beyond a place to grab lunch or shop clothing racks. Near this UNESCO World Heritage site, tourists will find the Alamo, a historic mission where the Battle of the Alamo occurred during the Texas Revolution. Another popular spot lining the San Antonio River is the Japanese Tea Garden, a quiet city respite and place to escape the city's heat and the hustle and bustle with its 60-foot waterfall, a pond full of koi fish, and gardens in bloom no matter the month.

Augusta, Kentucky

Visitors to Augusta, Kentucky, can see the Ohio River in much of its untouched, small-town glory. Augusta, named the most picturesque town in the state by USA Today, has less than 1,200 residents and plenty of hometown charm along its 9 miles that line the river. The city got its start nearly 240 years ago as a river trading post, and many of its attractions date back nearly as long.

These include the 226-year-old town clock and the 225-year-old ferry service, one of the oldest on the Ohio River. The ferry service takes visitors between Kentucky and Ohio on either side of the river, as well as their vehicles. If they're lucky, they'll see the American Countess paddle wheeler, which visits Augusta five times per year and is always heartily welcomed by crowds.

Not far from the Ohio River in Augusta is also the Baker-Bird Winery and Distillery, home to the biggest and oldest wine cellar in the country, having been collecting spirits since before the Civil War. What's known as the most historic spirits site in the United States dates back nearly 200 years. You don't need to venture far to find even more history in this Norman Rockwell painting-esque town, either. Within less than 1½ square miles, visitors can see historic homes like the former abode of Rosemary Clooney , a singer and actress famous for songs like "Come On-a My House."

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz music. It's an epicenter of Cajun and Creole cuisine. It's one of the most haunted cities in the world. It's home to America's most famous Mardi Gras celebration. But without the Mississippi River, which the city's famous French Quarter sits on the banks of, it might not be here. New Orleans was founded more than 300 years ago due to its ideal location on the river as a port for trade. Today, it remains an important port city in the United States since it's the final port before reaching the Gulf of Mexico, where items like oil, cars, coffee, and meat are shipped.

Whether visitors are going on a ghost tour, enjoying po' boys and Hurricanes, checking out the floats of Mardi Gras, or listening to live jazz music on Bourbon Street, the Mississippi River just steps away from New Orleans on the Bywater. However, that can be easy to forget in a city with so much activity. That's why each September, New Orleans celebrates the Downriver Festival at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, next to the river.

Here, residents and visitors gather to sample fresh seafood caught in nearby waters. They also listen to live music while remembering the important impacts that the river has had on everyday life in New Orleans for centuries. Plus, if you visit, consider hopping on a New Orleans riverboat tour to see the Mississippi River in action.

Cincinnati, Ohio

Today, we think of Cincinnati as a booming city that's the perfect place to catch a ball game, dig into a steaming bowl of chili, and enjoy a taste of Germany across the pond, which is also why it's quickly becoming a top tourist destination in the Midwest . However, the city got its start due to the Ohio River, which, due to trade and the invention of steamboats, helped propel Cincinnati into the future starting in the 1850s.

Many of the city's attractions are just a stone's throw from the river, which runs through the southern part of Cincinnati. One includes the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, a museum focused on the history of the Underground Railroad. Cincinnati's particular location even played a role in the Underground Railroad -- once enslaved people crossed the Ohio River into the North, they were known to be free.

Also on the banks of Cincinnati is Coney Island, a park with rides, pools, swimming lessons, cabanas, and more. Less than a half-mile from that is Riverbend Music Center, which attracts countless people per year to its outdoor concerts overlooking the Ohio River. To see another important piece of Ohio River culture and history, check out the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, the longest bridge on the planet. Connecting Kentucky and Ohio, this bridge stretches over 1,000 feet and dates back 156 years, making it a National Historic Landmark.

Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis, Tennessee, is the home of blues, rock n' roll, and soul music, as well as the former home of Elvis Presley, the legendary king of rock n' roll. But Memphis is also the home of the Mississippi River, where one of the city's most famous music festivals takes place -- the Beale Street Music Festival. The festival, hosted annually on the river banks at Tom Lee Park, is a three-day music extravaganza held each May overlooking the Mississippi River. But Beale Street, which begins at the river and runs into downtown Memphis, is a music destination no matter the day. Here, you'll find live blues venues, as well as authentic Southern restaurants and chic shops.

For a much tamer afternoon enjoying the river, visitors can hop on a paddle wheeler, allowing riders to see the city and its surrounding nature while learning about its storied history and points of interest. Also, at Tom Lee Park, visitors can walk across the Mississippi River thanks to the river's new pedestrian bridge -- the longest bridge people can walk across at any spot on the river. Cross the bridge by foot or bicycle from Memphis, and you'll find yourself in an entirely different state: Arkansas. Plus, depending on when you stop by the river, you'll also find lots of other activities, like yoga classes, roller skating, holiday markets, and firepits. Memphis is also known as one of the best riverfront towns on the Mississippi River.

Savannah, Georgia

If you walk down Savannah's Riverfront and cobblestoned River Street, which lines the Savannah River, you're literally walking past history. That's because the buildings that now house some of the city's best restaurants, bars, and shops were once cotton warehouses centuries ago. This Southern city exported more cotton than any other city on the planet thanks to its location on the river. After the final cotton office shut its doors nearly 70 years ago, the city got to work bringing the riverfront back to life, and did they ever. Today, it's an 80,000-square-foot mecca of activity and culture, all lined with the beautiful backdrop of the Savannah River.

Although there's far too much to see and do on River Street in a single visit, make sure you stop at Fiddler's Crab House for lunch or dinner, which is located inside a former cotton warehouse dating back to the 1850s. Or, for more casual comfort eats, head to Spanky's, where the first chicken finger was born. But make sure you finish off your meal at River Street Sweets, which has been named the city's best candy store countless times -- the pecan pralines are its specialty. To pick up other souvenirs besides sweets, the River Street Market Place is a must-visit. Located inside a re-imagined circa-1800s market, it is full of artisans selling homemade items like beef jerky, handcrafted jewelry, hot sauce, signage, wind spinners, and more.

Hood River, Oregon

Unlike the other towns on this list, Hood River, Oregon, isn't surrounded by big buildings or crowds. It's life on the wild side here, where Hood River is the attraction, as it brings tourists to hike, bike, and ski on its outskirts. Hood River is even known as the windsurfing capital of the world, and newbies and experts flock here to try their hand at this exciting sport.

To see the river and its stunning gorge from the land -- as well as its fields of wildflowers -- hop on the Coyote Wall Trail or the trails of Mount Hood Meadows. In the wintertime, Mount Hood Meadows becomes a skiing epicenter since the area is home to the longest ski season in the country. That means that in a single trip to Hood River, you can both windsurf and ski, making for a one-of-a-kind destination surrounded by natural beauty.

But if you need a breather from an afternoon spent on the river, take a tour of the Hood River Fruit Loop. Due to the volcanic soil of nearby Mount Hood, the area is a grower's paradise, and it has more than two dozen wineries, breweries, fruit stands, and cideries. Some of the most popular include Evoke Winery, which offers a wine for every palate made from Pacific Northwest grapes. There's also Hiyu Wine Farm, situated in a river valley surrounded by lush foliage and farm animals.

Richmond, Virginia

Bustling Richmond, Virginia, is full of important sites like the Poe Museum, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Virginia State Capitol, and the Science Museum of Virginia. For a break, Richmond residents, about 226,000 people, can take a stroll along the Canal Walk, which stretches over a mile along the city's riverfront and is accessible to all. It's also easy to reach since people can get on the Canal Walk on nearly every corner for a dozen blocks.

The Canal Walk runs along the James River and is often full of people walking, biking, or running atop the walk's 22 bronze medallions, which mark historic sites. If you don't want to track all 22 medallions by foot, one of the best ways to see the Canal Walk is by stepping onto a canal boat, which is available for historic tours and private charters. On a 40-minute historic tour, visitors will leave having learned about the Triple Crossing railroad, the city's former tobacco warehouses, the Low Line gardens, and more.

After your trip, head to one of Canal Walk's trendy restaurants, like Casa Barco, a modern Mexican destination, or the Southern Railway Taphouse, a gastropub with tons of draft beers on tap. On your way, you'll likely spot some of the Canal Walk's public art, such as The April 1865 exhibit, which marks when the Confederacy was defeated by the Union Army, located on a bridge adjacent to the James River.

Asheville, North Carolina

Hopheads have long been flocking to Asheville, which has more breweries than any other American city. But they may not realize that they have Asheville's French Broad River, one of the oldest rivers on the planet, to thank for the city's delicious beer. The river's water is very clean and has the perfect pH level needed for brewing beer. For a taste of what all the fuss is about, check out Wedge Brewing Company, located in the city's River Arts District alongside the French Broad River. The arts district, housed in former empty warehouses, is now the city's 2-mile epicenter for art, all with stunning views of the river. More than 200 artists have studios here and take creative inspiration from the French Broad River.

Asheville visitors can also see the French Broad River firsthand through tons of outdoor activities, like tubing, canoeing, fishing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. To go for a float on the river and help support keeping the river clean, book a trip with Asheville Outdoor Company, which opened on the river nearly three decades ago. Dave Donnell, who started the company, works with local organizations to protect the river and also helps people experience the French Broad River for themselves with floating adventures. Bike rentals are also available for tourists who want to see the river in all its glory without getting wet, as trails run along some riverbanks.

New Hope, Pennsylvania

You don't need to venture far to experience the Delaware River in New Hope, Pennsylvania -- the town's Main Street runs alongside it. As a result, visitors have river views, whether staying at one of the town's many quaint inns, visiting one of its restaurants, or shopping at its many eclectic boutiques. And every step they take is dripping with history. New Hope, which was formerly known as Coryell's Ferry, dates back two centuries and is home to historic sites like the circa-1784 Parry Mansion and the Bucks County Playhouse, where legendary names like Grace Kelly and Dick Van Dyke once performed.

But the real joy in New Hope is simply perusing its lively Main Street, which always has both visitors and residents strolling the area, no matter the season. For some of the best river views in town, grab a bite at Stella , a refined small-plate eatery housed inside the Ghost Light Inn and named after the owners' dog. Diners and shoppers can also readily cross the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge, a 1,000-foot-long bridge that leads them right into Lambertville on the other side of the Delaware River. This is another riverfront town with lots to see and do.

For a quieter stroll, take a walk or bike ride along the Delaware Canal State Park towpath. This is part of a park with a 50-acre pond, access to the river's shores, and nearly a dozen river islands, all undisturbed by humans and brimming with nature and wildlife.

Great Falls, Montana

The name "Great Falls, Montana," isn't a joke. There are 5 massive waterfalls throughout the 7 miles of the Missouri River that call Great Falls home, which attract the city's 60,000 residents and visitors alike. However, the falls that gave this city its name weren't great for everyone. Lewis and Clark had a particularly rough time traversing the waterfalls during their famous journey more than two centuries ago.

Still, today, visitors love seeing the same spots that these explorers did. One of those sites includes Ryan Island Park, which offers a phenomenal view of the Great Falls from its highest peak. Keep in mind, though, that the falls of the Missouri River that Lewis and Clark witnessed were much more massive -- today, they are controlled by various dams.

To do more than just see the river and its falls, visitors can enjoy outdoor activities on North America's longest river, like kayaking, fishing, paddleboarding, and more. Thanks to Montana's freezing temperatures, people can also go ice fishing on the Missouri River, and due to local vendors specializing in it, they don't have to manage the preparations themselves. Since Great Falls often has tourists during the warmer months, ice fishing is a great way to see the Missouri River in its winter glory and get some peace and quiet.

Leavenworth, Washington

During the holiday season, the Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth, Washington, might as well be the North Pole. Although only 2,400 people live here, millions flock to Leavenworth annually, eager to check out its Christmas lights, German wineries and breweries, reindeer farm, nutcracker museum, and more. But everyone visiting in the winter rather than the summer is missing out on one of the best parts of Leavenworth -- the Wenatchee River. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts looking to hike, bike, and raft, with stunning Washington mountain views in the background.

Here, there are tons of companies that offer all the gear needed for visitors to spend a day out on the river with tubes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. For people who want an extreme whitewater rafting experience, the Wenatchee River is also the perfect place to go. Depending on the season, the waves can be massive on this 14-mile river, and only those who don't mind getting soaked are recommended to embark.

Methodology

To determine which riverfront towns in America were the best to visit, Explore combed through dozens of tourism websites and blogs created by travel experts who detailed a town's attractions. These websites shared the history of a town, as well as its perspectives based on personal travel experiences. With this information, Explore ascertained which towns had the most varied list of attractions -- ranging from whitewater rafting to a pleasant afternoon shopping -- and recognized the importance of the river in their communities. The towns on this list not only have a river but also honor it and its history and carve their cultures around it.
