Why Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ Tour Is a Stadium-Shaking Triumph

By Brian Hiatt

Brian Hiatt

Beyoncé ‘s Renaissance tour , a stadium-shaking dance party built around last year’s album of the same name , won’t begin its U.S. run until a July 12 show in Philadelphia, but thanks to TikTok and YouTube, stateside fans already have a decent sense of the show. It begins with Beyoncé essentially serving as her own opening act via a mini set of ballads before exploding into a show built around the Renaissance album, with songs from her previous albums worked in among the new hits (or in some cases, as with a taste of “Sweet Dreams” in “Alien Superstar,” during them).

David Sanborn, Jazz Saxophonist Who Played on David Bowie's 'Young Americans,' Dead at 78

Viral conspiracy theories about drake, kendrick beef are spreading fast, david gilmour sets first u.s. tour dates in eight years, j.k. rowling used to want to debate gender. now she just insults trans people.

In the episode, Brittany Spanos joins host Brian Hiatt to discuss the discourse around and experience of the tour on TikTok and elsewhere, while Daily Telegraph music critic Neil McCormick — who just gave five stars to Beyoncé’s performance in the Welsh capital of Cardiff — offers a firsthand look at the tour. “Beyoncé has spent 25 years doing what she does at an incredibly high level and always trying to up up the ante,” says McCormick. “This is Beyoncé showing who’s the queen, and it’s at the top level of where a show has ever, ever been.”

Beyonce Renaissance Album

It’s time. Beyoncé ‘s Renaissance World Tour — her first jaunt in nearly five years — has officially kicked off at Stockholm’s Friends Arena where she’s set to perform for nearly three hours at the Swedish capital.

The stadium trek will continue across Europe through June, with the North American leg kicking off in Toronto on July 8. Club Renaissance will run for at least 40 dates, mainly in stadiums, and make stops at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (July 29) and at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. (Sept. 2) amid dates in Chicago, Philadelphia, Toronto, Atlanta, Phoenix and Miami.

Beyoncé performed her first full concert in four years  in January at the new Atlantis Royal Resort in Dubai. It was an elaborate and highly theatrical performance — for which sources say she was paid some $24 million — with an all-female orchestra, a battery of dancers, a small lake, fireworks, a 50-foot hydraulic platform, three costume changes for the singer and a guest appearance from her and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy, but no songs at all from “Renaissance.”

Her last official tour was the “On the Run II” tour with Jay in 2018, which was tied to their joint album, “Everything Is Love,” by the duo billed as the Carters. That same year, she headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival but her last solo trek was behind her previous solo album, “Lemonade,” in 2016.

Beyonce's Renaissance Tour setlist: Every song she sang at her Phoenix concert

beyonce tour set up

Hours before Beyoncé hit the stage at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, Billboard magazine revealed that her Renaissance World Tour had earned the biggest one-month gross in Billboard Boxscore history after raking in $127.6 million in July with just 11 shows.

That’s how an icon does it.

And the fact that she’s been out there breaking records on a tour that puts the focus squarely on her latest album only makes it that much more of a Beyoncé-level mic drop.

It helps, of course, that “Renaissance” is a brilliant effort, channeling the sound and spirit of the disco years in an intoxicating blend of joy and artistry to help listeners shake off the pandemic isolation blues.

That’s why the album ended 2022 at No. 1 on critics’ lists from Rolling Stone to Entertainment Weekly, Pitchfork, Vulture, NPR, the Guardian and more. It was the most acclaimed release of 2022 by far, despite the Grammys being dumb.

Beyonce, "Break My Soul"

If the reported millions of fans registered for ticket queues is any indication, Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour is going to be one for the books. The Queen’s first solo all-stadium show since 2016’s Formation World Tour was announced Wednesday (Feb. 1) after several days of speculation and reported venue location leaks. She’ll hit up Europe first in May, and will perform in North America beginning in early July.

There have been so many changes in the world since the last time Beyoncé performed a headlining show — and in her own life and career. Her family with husband Jay-Z grew by two, while she became the most-nominated artist in Grammys history and also garnered an Academy Award nomination. Considering the magnitude of her artistic growth since 2016 — coupled with the deep musical layers informing the RENAISSANCE era of her career — there is absolutely no telling what songs might comprise this tour’s setlist.

Beyoncé has never been a one-trick performer, and she consistently keeps fans on their toes with innovative ideas, fresh choreography and endearing song mashups. Now that she’s long beyond icon status, she has earned the liberty of continuing to do whatever the heck she feels like doing.

Where do you even start when thinking of the ideal setlist for an act as significant as Beyoncé, during a tour as massive as this one is expected to be? Will she pull deep cuts out of the vault? Will she hit every album era? Well, you won’t have to think too hard about all of that, because we have you covered.

Below is our dream setlist for Bey’s Renaissance World Tour. The setlist covers Beyoncé’s discography, keeps her past tour tendencies in mind, and also hearkens back to the beginnings of dance and house music, as Renaissance (and much of modern music as we know it) would hardly exist without them. We’re hoping that the show runs for a reasonable two-and-a-half hours — which would be fair, considering it’s her first trek in nearly seven years!

ACT 1: RENAISSANCE

The lights cut out, prompting all eyes to be planted on the stage. A low hum hits the atmosphere, sort of like singing, but mostly like the muffled sound of a club you can hear from only the outside. The hum gets clearer after about a minute passes, and it becomes evident that it’s the opening song from Renaissance . We’re about to enter the club.

"I'm That Girl" (Video Intro)

The Tommy Wright- and Princess Loko-sampling intro is the only possible track to truly start the night’s festivities off on the correct foot. Several screens showcasing that nearly-six-month-old video teaser light up the arena, while the obvious disco ball-shaped catwalk enveloping “Club Renaissance” ticket holders shines brightly.

Beyoncé’s silhouette emerges from a shadowy backdrop to the roar of the crowd, as she welcomes them to the Renaissance World Tour. She steps into the light and continues to sing. Dancers take their places behind her and groove to the music, which cuts out as soon as T.S. Madison’s voice is heard on the track, saying, “b–ch, I’m Black.” During those lyrics, the entire arena goes black.

"Be Alive" (Interlude)

Here, we see home videos of Beyoncé and her family, set to the tune of her Oscar-nominated song from King Richard . This highlights the central theme of Black joy and love that Beyoncé aims to portray in her work. (Plus, it’s been a while since we’ve gotten a glimpse at Rumi and Sir!) The video ends just as the drums before the first verse kick in, the crowd is still seeing black.

"Alien Superstar"

“Please do not be alarmed, remain calm,” a voice says as “Alien Superstar” begins and flashing lights engulf the stage. Pandemonium ensues as the lights come back up and the song plays in its entirety. Beyoncé and her dancers are performing a synchronized routine.

"Cuff It" / "Another Star" (Outro)

While the idea of playing her latest LP in its entirety is appealing to some, when it comes to Big B (both “Brother” and Beyoncé), you must expect the unexpected. Legendary percussionist Sheila E — who is heard on this track — pops out to slay a drum solo. Beyoncé ends the act by mashing up “CUFF IT” with Stevie Wonder’s disco fever dream “Another Star.” Sheila is playing the iconic outro on the drums as Bey’s vocals and the crowd are going crazy.

ACT 2: THE VOCAL SHOWDOWN

While Bey leaves stage to change costume, a sultry video intro featuring the downtempo version of Deena Jones/Effie White’s “One Night Only” from Dreamgirls plays on a screen. It keeps in theme with Renaissance ’s disco influences while bringing back memories of the lauded, Bey-starring film. Dancers clad in nightgowns perform a contemporary dance routine on stage, disrobing to reveal form-fitting sequin bodysuits and lingerie.

"Love Drought"

One of the internet’s favorite Lemonade songs comes in slowly as the energy on stage shifts towards a dazzlingly dressed Beyoncé, who sits center stage as the dancers start to surround her. The choreography includes isolations, ripple effects and stunning visual formations, while hazy green and yellow lights illuminate the stadium.

"Love to Love You Baby" / "Naughty Girl"

As a sexy mashup of the 2004 hit from her debut solo album and the Donna Summer classic it prominently references plays, Beyoncé addresses the crowd, asking them how they’re doing — to uproarious applause. She then explains that the Renaissance album is about love at the core. “Tonight is all about loving who you are,” she says with a smile. “No one can tell you how to love or who to love.”

"Plastic Off the Sofa" / "Rather Die Young"

She adds that love is “meant to be fun” — and that even if you find yourself in a relationship for a long time, “flirting is still necessary!” She coos along to “Plastic Off the Sofa.” Later, she ties in “Rather Die Young” from 4 , before ending with the challenging vocal runs from “Sofa,” keeping the production from “Young” intact.

"Virgo's Groove"

The “Club Renaissance” disco ball catwalk shines light blue as dancers return in their best silk nightgowns, performing to the seductive song while Beyoncé joins them. All eyes (and ears) are waiting for her impressive vocal gymnastics to close out the song — which, of course, sound better than in the recorded version. The crowd cheers, and the lights dim.

ACT 3: LET’S DANCE

As ‘Fame’ is one of the most quintessential dance films, it would be a total miss to not include snippets of Beyoncé and her dancers gettin’ down to the title theme, performed by the late legend, Irene Cara. The song is also mashed up with B’Day ’s underrated bop, “Green Light,” and interweaves lyrics from 4 ’s “Dance For You.” It’s evident that the audience is in for a particular treat with this section.

"Move" / "My Power" / "Mine"

The Grace Jones and Tems-assisted “Move” kicks off the section, much to the fans’ delight. Beyoncé and her dancers perform “ayyy”-inducing, African-influenced choreography with ease. “My Power” from The Lion King: The Gift kicks in near the “Move” climax, and later ties in Drake’s “do you wanna roll with a good girl?” query from “Mine” (off her self-titled album) for an iconic dance breakdown. Throughout, the choreography gets more raucous, and the crowd is rightfully, predictably losing their s–t.

"Crazy in Love" / "America Has a Problem"

Of course, Beyoncé has to tie in her first solo Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit, which features one of her most-anticipated dance breaks. This time around, the famed “uh-oh” twerk section pays homage to her days in the hip-hop, rappin’ group Girlz Tyme, tying in a breakdown that seamlessly flows into Renaissance ‘s “America Has a Problem.” She and her dancers bring the crowd back to the ‘80s and ‘90s — there’s even some breakdancers showing everyone how it’s done on stage. The choreo is very Janet-like, which is fitting, since Bey is obviously inspired by the Jacksons.

"Energy" / "Baby Boy"

This is where the dancehall vibes truly come out to play, both sonically and visually. As Beyoncé and her dancers whine their waists to “Energy,” the crowd’s energy in turn ramps up. The outro for “Energy” smoothly turns into “Baby Boy,” tying in one of the most-anticipated dance breaks during her shows with a new dance jam, to make an unforgettable stage moment. There are several island-tinged tie-ins with the music here, such as Sean Paul’s “Get Busy” and Sister Nancy/Jay-Z and Damien Marley’s “Bam Bam.” Considering BEAM, the featured voice on “Energy,” is of Jamaican descent, it all feels very appropriate, and the audience is loving every moment.

"Break My Soul"

This is the culmination of every dance party you’ve ever attended (the good ones) rolled into one. There’s ‘90s moves, there’s hip-shaking, there’s jumping, and there’s moments of smoothness in the choreography. There’s some shouting as well — especially as the crowd, in unison, emphatically shouts “AND WE BACK OUTSIDE” as though the exhaustion from several years of health-centered headlines has finally reached its peak. You’ve never heard cheers and clapping quite like this.

ACT 4: DIRTY SOUTH FLAVOR

“All Up in Your Mind” serves as the background song, while the chorus of Mike Jones’ “Still Tippin’” overlays and blares through the stadium. Echoes of the line “I’m goin’ back to the South” from “Black Parade” and lyrics from her verse in Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage (Remix)” reverberate. Black and white visuals play of Beyoncé dismounting her trusted ‘Renaissance’ horse (Reneigh) wearing chaps, and her mirrorball cowgirl hat catches the lens as she struts into the distance. The crowd is at a fever pitch.

"Formation" / "Soldier" Mashup

Never one to forget to remind us where she came from, Beyoncé opens the section with “Formation,” performing the video’s much-emulated choreography with her backup dancers. The vibe switches with the simple lyric “we like them boys up top from the BK,” signaling the 2005 Destiny’s Child hit “Soldier” will begin. (Who wouldn’t go nuts after hearing Destiny’s Child?!)

"Let Me Try" (Interlude)

The synth-only version of the song by Kaleidoscope and Frank Tirado (used in “Freedom”) plays in the background as Beyoncé preaches to the audience about the importance of never forgetting where you come from. There’s a church organ and several colloquialisms and words of affirmation coming from her background singers and dancers. She begins to discuss her roots in the church, and how her faith has kept her afloat during so many challenging moments in her life.

"Church Girl" / "Diva"

Renaissance ’s bounce track gets the crowd hype, as Bey’s vocals and dance moves are on full display. She later ties in a bounce version of “Diva,” one of the live show’s biggest crowd pleasers. The dance break just keeps elevating from show to show, and this version within this performance era is no different.

"Get Me Bodied" / "Stomp"

The bounce and church vibes continue, as Beyoncé wildly blends her B’Day dance hit “Get Me Bodied” with Kirk Franklin and God’s Property’s ’90s gospel classic “Stomp.” We weren’t kidding when we said to expect the unexpected!

ACT 5: CLUB KID

“End Of Time (Revel/Super Bowl 2013 mix)” serves as this section’s background music. The sound of hands clapping and fans clacking create the beat’s build, while some affirming catchphrases often heard in queer spaces (“you betta work!” “slay!” “yaas!”) further the scene. Chopped video snippets from the first teaser of the Renaissance album fill the screen, showcasing Beyoncé in a cowboy hat in what appears to be an underground club.

Beyoncé’s background singers begin a slow chant of “Uncle Jonny” to commemorate her deceased “fairy godmother,” before the stage opens up to reveal various ballroom-style scenes, including voguing, duckwalking and strutting. There are so many unique talents on stage that it’s hard to pin down where to look, because everything is so eye-catching. The song is performed in its entirety, with Beyoncé urging the crowd to scream the last chant so loudly that Uncle Jonny can hear them in Heaven.

"Work It Out" / "Blow" (Interlude)

This last interlude allows Beyoncé to talk about her queer fans, her relationship to the LGBTQ+ community and how disco would be nothing without them. “This is for you” she shouts to applause and adoration.

"Pure/Honey" / "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)"

The dancers truly take center stage here with some fabulous synchronized choreography, showcasing the hallmarks of ballroom dance culture. Fans are living for Bey’s outfit, as cheers of “mother!” come from them and the people on stage. She ties in Sylvester’s 1979 floor-filling classic “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” — which, like the other mashups before it, goes off without a hitch.

"Summer Renaissance" / "Survivor" / "I Will Survive"

The album’s (and the show’s) finale, “SUMMER RENAISSANCE” closes with a renaissance of both Black music and Beyoncé’s legacy. Bey melds together Gloria Gaynor’s disco/queer liberation anthem “I Will Survive” with Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor” to really drive home the attributes of the project home, and leave the audience feeling satisfied after several years without seeing this icon in the flesh. It takes approximately four hours to get out of the area due to the influx of traffic, but it only allows more time for everyone to reminisce on the magic that just occurred.

Beyoncé's Set Designer Breaks Down Epic Renaissance Tour Staging

Cydney Yeates

Contributor

Beyoncé performing in London on Monday night

Just when we all thought Beyoncé ’s Renaissance World Tour couldn’t get any more mind-blowing, her set designer has shared just how the impressive production came together.

The spectacular set of shows, which kicked off in Sweden earlier this month , are already sending social media into a frenzy, with the Break My Soul hitmaker delighting fans by inviting her daughter Blue out on stage in recent days .

But now an eye-opening Instagram post from Beyoncé’s set designer Es Delvin has given the worldwide tour a whole new meaning.

The artist shared enlightening insight into the creation of the Renaissance tour set design, revealing that a creative team spent almost two years transforming Beyoncé’s poetry into art.

And if you haven’t seen pictures already, the stage itself is pretty inspiring, boasting a giant screen containing a large “portal” right in the centre.

View this post on Instagram

Taking to the social media app, Es shared sketches coming to life, showing how ideas on paper came to life.

Captioning the post, she wrote: “ Beyoncé’s LA studio reminds me of Andy Warhol’s Factory: her endlessly curious creative team, Parkwood, are there all year round, helping Beyoncé to translate her poetry and scripts into films and artworks.

“We had meetings at the studio and on zoom between September 2021 and March 2023 – constantly sketching the evolving ideas for the Renaissance Tour."

“As Beyoncé read her poetic lockdown film scripts to us, the show’s three-hour, six-act structure began to emerge,” she continued.

Es explained that Beyoncé’s range of references are broad and include “redlining” – which is the denial of loans and mortgages in Black residential areas – reclamation of rodeo culture for Black Americans and the echo chambers of surveillance capitalism.

She revealed that those three themes were “all shot through with the silver-sequinned joy, liberty and luminosity of LGBTQ+ Ball culture”.

Another example of the Renaissance tour's epic staging

Concluding the post, Es added: “Working closely with the architects from Stufish, we envisaged a stadium sized ‘film with a hole’.

“Ed Burke and Andrew Makadsi from Beyoncé’s Parkwood team curated the vast perforated LED sculpture into a euphoric three-hour kinetic painting made of light, Fatima Robinson directed the choreography, James Merryman the cameras, and Tobias Rylander the light .”

Es’s work on the Renaissance tour has been branded “out of this planet” and “genius” by mind-blown fans.

“As an architect I’m in awe of the design’s fruition and the hard work that must’ve gone on behind the scenes,” another said. “I love how it seamlessly blends into the crowd and not isolate the performer from the audience. Easily one of the best stage designs of all time! ’

This isn’t the first time Es has worked with Beyoncé either, having previously designed the set for the record-breaking Grammy winner’s Formation stadium tour back in 2016.

Es has helped a plethora of huge names bring their stage shows to life, including the likes of Adele , The Weeknd and Lady Gaga .

Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour is currently on its five-date London leg, with the whole of June dedicated to European dates.

The tour will run until September, with New Orleans marking the closing concert.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour Set Is a Dazzling-Disco Afro-Futuristic, Queer Fantasy Brought Center Stage

Design mastermind Es Devlin has done it again.

Queen Bey’s Renaissance world tour kicked off May 10 in Stockholm, following her album’s release last July (the tour is currently on its final leg in the states, where it will run until the end of September). It’s the megastar’s first solo tour in seven years, and the performance—the singer-songwriter’s biggest-budget touring set yet, which Forbes predicts could bring in as much as $2.1 billion—took Devlin and her team almost two years to complete. It was worth the wait.

preview for Beyoncé’s Best Renaissance World Tour Looks

The arena is befitted with a massive, stadium-size green screen, with a giant circular stage portal in the center. The whole structure is further perforated by LED lights that transform the stage into a fully immersive kinetic light show. And that’s just the framework. Over the course of the show’s three-hour, six-act structure, the stage is transformed into a glitzy disco cowboy wonderland (you couldn’t count all the sequins in just one sitting), a hypnotic lipstick-red universe, and an intergalactic sphere of otherworldly forms and metallic hues.

beyoncé renaissance world tour opening night stockholm

“Beyoncé’s L.A. studio reminds me of Andy Warhol’s factory,” wrote Devlin in a since-deleted Instagram post, according to Huffington Post . All of which was “shot through with the silver-sequinned joy, liberty, and luminosity of LGBTQ+ ball culture.”

The props, too, are absurdly—ludicrously—fantastical. During her performance of the song “Cozy,” Beyoncé is accompanied by two massive dancing robot arms that tower over her, a nod to the face-framing ’80s dance move. That’s followed by a large chrome tank vehicle that the megastar sits atop, performing her 2020 remix of Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage” while anchored to a pole. At one point, campy set pieces like massive cyborg boobs and gigantic robot legs in spread-eagle position make an appearance.

The show then shifts pace as Beyoncé sits perched like Aphrodite in a life-size, rotating translucent seashell. And then there’s the unforgettable finale that nearly broke the internet: Beyoncé straddles a disco-ball-sparkly horse (reminiscent of the one seen in the cover art of her Renaissance album) that lifts off from the main stage to hover above the nearest seating area. All the while, she’s belting her Grammy-award-winning “Summer Renaissance” ballad. It’s the ultimate Afro-futuristic fantasy.

Beyond the show’s larger-than-life props, it’s the set, ultimately, that plays the biggest role in the production. The massive circular stage at the center of the stadium operates at a scale so large that concert attendees in the nosebleed seats are also having an immersive experience. But of course, that’s exactly what you might expect from Devlin.

You’ve undoubtedly seen a Devlin design, even if you didn’t recognize it. The British designer who got her start in theater design in the mid-1990s has worked on an estimated 380 projects, masterminding the stage for Adele, Lady Gaga, and the Weeknd, as well as sets for the Royal Opera House in London, displays at the Super Bowl, and installations for Cartier and Saint Laurent.

Devlin wrote on Instagram that, working alongside Parkwood Entertainment , an entertainment and management company founded by Beyoncé herself, they spent more than a year and a half “constantly sketching the evolving ideas for the Renaissance tour.” Then, meeting with Beyoncé, she recalls how their creative vision further evolved. “As Beyoncé read her poetic lockdown film scripts to us, the show’s three-hour, six-act structure began to emerge,” she wrote.

beyoncé renaissance world tour london

As with much of Devlin’s work, her vision lies in translating Beyoncé’s words and music into visuals that transcend the dancehall energy of the starlet’s iconic ballads through a range of references. Whether it’s the reclamation of rodeo culture for Black Americans through metallic cowboy garb or a critique of surveillance capitalism via robotic props—or the hardly subtle, gloriously bedazzling optics that are bursting with queer joy—it’s clear that Beyoncé sees her art as a way to do more than make catchy music. And when it comes to translating that to a broad audience, Devlin certainly knows how to bring that center stage.

Whether you managed to score tickets or just want to live vicariously through those that did, Beyoncé ‘s Renaissance tour setlist is one for the ages. Beyoncé —whose full name is Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter—debuted with the girl group Destiny’s Child in 1996 along with fellow members Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. The band—whose final line-up consisted of Beyoncé, Rowland and Michelle Williams—went on to sell more than 60 million records worldwide and become of the most successful artists of the 2000s for hits like “Survivor,” “Independent Women,” “Bootylicious,” “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name.”

Beyoncé  made her solo debut in 2003 with her first single “Crazy in Love” featuring her now-husband, Jay-Z. The song, which was featured on Beyoncé’s debut album  Dangerously in Love , reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and led to other hits like “Check on It,” “Deja Vu” and “Me, Myself and I.” Since  Dangerously in Love , Beyoncé has released six more albums: 2006’s  B’Day , 2008’s  I Am… Sasha Fierce , 2011’s  4 , 2013’s  Beyoncé , 2016’s  Lemonade  and 2022’s  Renaissance.

The album—also titled  Act I: Renaissance —is the first act of a trilogy project Beyoncé started during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world. It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving,” Beyoncé explained in an Instagram post on June 30, 2022. “My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration. I hope you find joy in this music. I hope it inspires you to release the wiggle. Ha! And to feel as unique, strong, and sexy as you are.”

Who is Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour opening act?

Who is Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour opening act? Rolling Stone ‘s review of the Stockholm show revealed that the show jumps straight into Beyoncé’s performance: “The show had a twist start: Instead of throwing a Studio 54-esque party right off the bat, Yoncé arrived on stage in a gold suit with her band, a giant, heavenly cloud scene on the stage-wide screen behind her. She sang “Dangerously in Love,” a song she hasn’t performed live since 2009, and a ballad,” the writer wrote. “It was like she was her own opening act (there were no other opening acts, for the record)”. However, The New York Post reported in February 2023 that there were rumors singer and model Grace Jones would join her on tour. Jones has modeled for fashion brands like Yves St. Laurent and Kenzo, as well as magazines like Elle and Vogue. She’s also a new-wave singer best known for songs like “Private Life,” “Pull up to the Bumper,” “I’ve Seen That Face Before” and “Slave to the Rhythm.” Jones is also featured on Beyoncé’s song “Move” from her 2022 album, Renaissance .

Beyoncé dances with giant robot arms on opening night of Renaissance World Tour

May 10, 2023 / 8:44 PM EDT / CBS News

Beyoncé kicked off her 57-date Renaissance World Tour in Stockholm, Sweden, on Wednesday with futuristic panache.

The set design on the opening night of the global superstar's second all-stadium solo tour appeared to be her most ambitious to date. Videos posted on social media showed pyrotechnics, disco balls, giant moving robots , and even a shiny, metallic tank that Beyoncé rode while singing.

The tour is in support of Beyoncé's seventh solo studio album, "Renaissance. It is her first solo tour in nearly seven years. The Formation World Tour in 2016 supported her album "Lemonade."

Beyoncé sang all 16 songs from "Renaissance" at the tour's opening show, marking the first time she'd performed any of them live. Several older songs from her expansive catalog made their live debuts as well, including the Grammy-winning "Black Parade," "Lift Off" and "Savage Remix," her number-one hit with Megan Thee Stallion.

Beyoncé started the show with four straight ballads, including her 2003 "Dangerously In Love 2," an unconventional move by a singer known to open her concerts with fast-paced smash hits like "Crazy In Love," "Run the World (Girls)," and "Formation."

Beyoncé performs onstage during the opening night of the Renaissance World Tour at Friends Arena on May 10, 2023 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Beyoncé then launched into songs from "Renaissance," with performances replete with a futuristic set design — including those robotic arms — and queer, Black and trans-inspired choreography that evoked the themes and tenor of her latest acclaimed album.

Dancing energetically alongside a legion of backup dancers wearing blonde wigs and glitzy silver leotards, the 41-year-old mother of three sang (and rapped) with the power and pristineness that's put her in a distinct category of pop performers. Her athleticism doesn't seem to have waned since her astonishingly aerobic headlining sets at Coachella in 2018.

The performers' outfits were as outlandish and ultramodernist as the show's set design, ranging from a gold bodysuit inspired by Loewe's Fall 2022 collection to a giant bee costume — a sartorial embrace of her designation as "Queen Bey." Another outfit appeared to be transformed by UV light while she was wearing it.

Beyoncé ended the show with a performance of the album's final track, "Summer Renaissance," while perched atop a gleaming, crystalline horse — evoking the "Renaissance" album cover — and later being hoisted above the crowd  amid a cloud of glittery confetti.

Wednesday marked just the second live performance for Beyonce in nearly three years. Before her January show at the opening of Atlantis The Royal hotel in Dubai, Beyoncé hadn't performed in front of a live audience since she sang at Kobe Bryant's memorial in February 2020. She co-headlined her last world tour with her husband, Jay-Z, in 2018.

Forbes on Monday predicted the Renaissance World Tour could earn nearly $2.1 billion — $500 million more than Taylor Swift's "Eras" world tour is expected to make and more than the revenue from all of Beyoncé's previous concerts combined.

Beyoncé has announced that she will provide support for students and entrepreneurs throughout the Renaissance World Tour by giving out a total of $2 million through her BeyGOOD Foundation . The foundation's BeyGOOD initiative, founded in 2013, has undertaken various philanthropic endeavors in the U.S. and worldwide, including providing aid to communities affected by natural disasters, promoting education and supporting programs that address issues such as housing scarcity and mental health. It has also provided grants to small, Black-owned businesses — a focus since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beyoncé raises – and clears – her own ambitious bar at Renaissance tour US opener

beyonce tour set up

PHILADELPHIA – Two  Beyoncé s come to play on her Renaissance World Tour .

There is the understated Beyoncé  of the opening segment, her creme brulee -colored hair blowing delicately as she vocalizes intently through “Dangerously in Love,” sits elegantly atop a sliver baby grand piano for “1+1” and thanks the crowd for their loyalty (“You are the reason I’m standing on this stage”).

Then there is the Beyoncé of the other five segments of the show, with themes such as “Renaissance,” “Opulence” and “Motherboard.”

This Beyoncé is an unstoppable force of precise movement and vocal dynamics, a superstar who, two months shy of turning 42 and in the where-did-the-time-go third decade of her career, has raised – and cleared – her own ambitious bar yet again.

At Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field Wednesday, Beyoncé finally unveiled her colossal, eye-popping production in the U.S. She’s already played for a million-plus fans since launching the world tour in Sweden in May, allowing her time to perfect every second of this polished, 2 ½-hour spectacle that will play nearly two dozen stadiums through October.

Though a tiny, taut figure on a stage designed with ramps, staircases and catwalks, Beyoncé loomed magnificently on a video screen wall, her doe-eyed beauty and trademark snarls amplified to reach the farthest cranny of the venue.

Bombarded with bras : Drake attracted much attention from fans at his Detroit tour stop

The dazzling concept videos that ushered in each changeover – particularly, the futuristic visual feast that created a Bey-bot for the “Renaissance” segment – captivated, never feeling like costume-change filler or a glitzy stall tactic.

Of course, there is no stalling in Beyoncé’s universe . The blizzard of beats powering “I’m That Girl” and “Cozy” was complemented by rigidly snapped elbows, severe shoulder shrugs and cocked hips by Beyoncé and her cadre of 10 female dancers.

Her ode to house music, punctuated by “Cuff It” and “Break My Soul” – standout tracks from last summer’s “Renaissance” album – pulsed accordingly, with lights attacking from every angle of the stadium.

Clad in a Barbie-pink gown with more slits than material, Beyoncé radiated glam-infused confidence. When her sunglasses slid down her nose one too many times, they were brusquely tossed offstage. No errant eyewear will impede her rhythm.

A hearty rump shake at the start of “Break My Soul” sent the sold-out crowd into spasms, but it was the midsong interpolation of Madonna’s “Vogue” that further encouraged their glee as Beyoncé name-checked Lizzo, Nina Simone, Solange Knowles and Jilly From Philly in her recitation.

By now, the Beyhive knew to expect an appearance by Blue Ivy, the 11-year-old daughter of Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z (aka Shawn Carter), who started joining the team on stage in Europe. But even with advanced knowledge, the crowd erupted when the preteen arrived during “My Power,” leading the dance crew down a ramp while Mom followed atop a glistening tank-like vehicle.

Blue Ivy ably kept pace with the fleet feet around her, ending “Black Parade” with her fist in the air. As the audience showered the young Carter with more whoops of appreciation, Beyoncé’s game face melted into a proud smile, leading to one of the most memorable snapshots of the night.

The tour set list draws heavily from “Renaissance” as expected, but Beyoncé sprinkles in hits – though maybe not enough for some fans – from her robust catalog, including “Naughty Girl” and “Formation.”

A musical highlight landed with the double punch of classics “Love on Top” and “Crazy In Love.” With her male dancers lined up behind mic stands, Beyoncé humorously led the crowd through the escalating key changes in “Love on Top” before the delectable groove of the song dovetailed into the snaky bass line of The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” complete with throwback choreography.

It was a moment of unadulterated joy that remained through the sizzle of “Crazy in Love,” which included a fabulous coda by her hardworking band.

The tempo of the show decelerated a bit as Beyoncé entered the homestretch in her already-famous Loewe bodysuit designed with strategically placed handprints. “Plastic Off the Sofa” and “Virgo’s Groove” didn’t have the audience as adrenalized as intensely as other selections from “Renaissance.” But by the time she reemerged for the encore sporting a yellow-and-black headdress and offering a powerful missive with “America Has a Problem,” attentions were rapt again.

Soaring balladeer and poetic messenger. Refined couture and sequined camouflage. Warm smiles and dramatic sneers.

Beyoncé delivers all of it, with excellence.

Every Look From Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour, From Custom Catsuits to Disco-Inspired Couture

Beyonce performs wearing Balenciaga

Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour began with a bang in Stockholm and it hasn't slowed down since. The highly-anticipated show has featured inventive set design, a decades-spanning setlist, and a plethora of standout style moments—from to archival pieces to custom looks and nearly everything in between. The star’s wardrobe has combined her signature style with the visual ethos of the album Renaissance ( think lots of sequins, silver, catsuits, and the occasional bee-inspired look). Beyoncé has also been wearing looks from brands specific to the city she’s performing in—for the UK leg of her tour she wore picks from the London-based Mary Katrantzou and Robert Wun while in Marseille, France she opted for a look by designer Simon Porte Jacquemus.

The singer has donned looks from both established brands—Valentino, Mugler, lots of Alexander McQueen, among others—as well as smaller labels like Anrealage and Brandon Blackwood. Balmain catsuits and mini dresses have been a constant throughout her tour wardrobe (in March, she partnered with creative director Olivier Rousteing to design a Renaissance couture line for the brand ) as well as imaginative pieces from Loewe. Beyoncé began the tour in Europe which has seen her in London, Paris, and other cities with the last being Warsaw, Poland on June 28th. She will then head to North America with her last date coming in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 27th. Needless to say, there will be countless more style moments to come—so, to make sure you don’t miss one look, keep checking back here as we keep track of everything Beyoncé has worn during the Renaissance world tour.

Beyoncé wears a custom Louis Vuitton bodysuit during her "Renaissance" world tour.

Louis Vuitton’s newly appointed creative director of menswear, Pharrell Williams, designed this glittering catsuit for Beyoncé’s Detroit, Michigan concert. The custom bodysuit put a spin on the brand’s famed Damier check through glittering crystal embroidery. Williams also created custom ensembles for Blue Ivy and Beyoncé’s backup dancers.

Beyoncé wears a custom Marine Serre bodysuit and chain bra during her Renaissance world tour.

Alexander McQueen was a staple throughout Beyoncé’s European performances, so it’s no surprise that she’s returned to the British brand when stateside. During her Nashville concert, the singer wore a custom bodysuit, gloves, and boots complete with crystal embroidery. She stopped it off with a UFO-shaped chapeau appropriate for an alien superstar. The outfit seemed to be a shorter version of a look she wore earlier on in the tour.

Beyoncé wears a custom red David Koma look during her "Renaissance" world tour.

The singer opted for another dazzling custom look from David Koma. Unlike her previous printed mini dress from the British designer, this red number had plenty of sequins throughout as well as an asymmetrical train detail. She also mixed in a pair of custom Tiffany & Co. sunglasses and Gedebe boots to make things even more Renaissance worthy.

She paired the flashy piece with coordinating boots, and towards the end of the show, she flew above the crowd in this look while mounted on a horse.

However, the focal point of the ensemble is certainly the UFO-like headpiece that obscured everything but the singer’s eyes.

One Year Since The Renaissance Began: Reflecting on Our Favorite Moments from Beyoncé’s Historic Tour

A year has passed since Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour launched on May 10, 2023. This critically acclaimed tour, which spanned 59 dates across 39 cities and wrapped up on October 1, 2023, is still a hot topic online. Featuring a metallic, ’70s dance theme, the tour not only brought in a staggering $579 million, making it Beyoncé’s highest-grossing tour but also set records as the highest-grossing tour for both an R&B artist and a black female musician.

Fans continue to relive these incredible moments through stunning personal videos and a concert film released in theaters the same month the tour concluded. “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” was a massive success, offering those who couldn’t attend a behind-the-scenes look at the makings of this phenomenal show. Now, rumors suggest Beyoncé might soon embark on another tour for her newly released album, “Cowboy Carter.” While we wait for confirmation, let’s revisit some of the most unforgettable moments from the Renaissance tour.

Blue Ivy Carter’s On-Stage Debut

Although fans were excited to see Beyoncé perform, her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, stole the show as a surprise guest during the Paris stop. At just 12 years old, Blue Ivy joined Beyoncé and the ensemble of dancers for performances of “My Power” and “Black Parade,” marking her stage debut.

Beyoncé Named Honorary Mayor of Santa Clara

On August 30, 2023, the city of Santa Clara, California, declared Beyoncé honorary mayor for the day, coinciding with her concert there. She received the key to the city and celebrated the occasion with her fans. “You know today is special because today I am the mayor,” Beyoncé announced, prompting cheers from the audience.

The “Everybody on Mute” Challenge

A standout tradition of the Renaissance tour was the “Everybody on Mute” challenge. Each time Beyoncé performed her single “Energy,” she instructed the crowd to fall completely silent when she sang, “Look around everyone on mute.” While all cities participated enthusiastically, Atlanta was notably the most successful, achieving near-perfect silence.

The Iconic “Bee” Outfit

One of the tour’s most memorable visuals was Beyoncé’s “Bee” costume. As she performed “America Has a Problem,” she donned a striking yellow and black Mugler bodysuit complete with an antenna headpiece, making a buzzing statement.

Megan Thee Stallion Joins Beyoncé in Houston

In a special hometown performance, Megan Thee Stallion joined Beyoncé in Houston to perform their hit “Savage.” The duo donned matching camouflage outfits, energizing the crowd with their dynamic collaboration.

These moments are just a few highlights from the Renaissance tour that continue to resonate with fans. As we reminisce about these spectacular events, we eagerly anticipate what Beyoncé will bring next. How Taylor Swift Includes The Tortured Poets Department in the Eras Tour

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour - Paris, France

A fter a two-month hiatus, Taylor Swift returned to the stage today, embarking on the European leg of the Eras Tour . Swift performed the first of four nights in Paris, about three weeks after she released her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department .

Soon after the album’s release, fans were convinced Swift would add The Tortured Poets Department to the Eras Tour, based on the star’s social media activity. On April 25, Swift posted a YouTube Short video of her rehearsing for the tour, in which the album’s opening song “Fortnight” could be heard. The caption read: “A fortnight til Paris.”

In an interview with Radio France , Swift’s French tour promoter said she would be including new songs from the album on the next leg of the Eras Tour. “We are going to discover a slightly modified show since she has released a new album,” he said.

As the show kicked off in Paris on Thursday evening, all signs pointed to The Tortured Poets Department 's inclusion on the setlist. Fans noted that it was included in the tour intro:

Taylor Swift makes changes to the Eras Tour set in Paris

Swift added The Tortured Poets Department to the Eras Tour intro and reordered the setlist on the first night in Paris. The "Lover" portion of the show previously ended with the song "The Archer," but on Thursday, Swift skipped it, going from "Lover" to "Fearless." After the "Fearless" era, Swift went right into the "Red" era instead of "Evermore," and followed that up with songs from Speak Now and Reputation . Fans noted that Swift skipped performing "Long Live" from Speak Now , which she added to the setlist last July.

Other changes followed when Swift went into the "Folklore" era. While the "Evermore" and "Folklore" eras typically occurred at different parts of the show, in Paris, Swift announced she was combining them, since they are "sister albums."

"On the Eras Tour, we have now reunited the sisters, combined them into one chapter. You can call it "Folkmore," you can call it "Everlore," she said, before performing "Champagne Problems" (from Evermore ) followed by "August" (from Folklore ).

How The Tortured Poets Department is included in the Eras Tour

Swift introduced the "Tortured Poets" section of the Eras Tour after a performance of "Bad Blood," with the set turning into an image of a long road. She opened the new era with a performance of "But Daddy I Love Him."

The second song in the "Tortured Poets" era was a shortened version of "So High School," followed by a performance of "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?"

Swift then sang "Down Bad," as an image of a UFO flew above her, before performing the album's opening track, "Fortnight." The next song from Tortured Poets was "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived."

Then, Swift changed into a gold jacket, while a jazzy tune played, before singing "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart."

But the "Tortured Poets" era wasn't over. After "Paris," Swift performed the melancholy "loml," track 12 from the new album, before diving in to the "Midnights" section of the show with "Lavender Haze."

The Tortured Poets Department made history as the most streamed album in a single day, accumulating over 300 million streams—beating out the previous record holder: Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter . It also became the fastest album to amass over one billion streams in just five days, making it the most streamed album in a week with over 799 million streams. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with 2.61 million equivalent album units (this includes vinyls, CDs, cassettes, and digital album downloads). Swift celebrated the album’s success with a post to Instagram sharing photos of her and her collaborators making the project.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

The caption reads, “2.6 million ARE YOU ACTUALLY SERIOUS?? Thank you for listening, streaming, and welcoming Tortured Poets into your life. Feeling completely overwhelmed,” she writes. “I was already so fired up to get back to the tour but you doing THIS?? May 9th can’t come soon enough.”

Celebrate AAPI artists this May with a genre-spanning playlist spotlighting festival headliners and up-and-coming musicians. From Korean hip-hop to Icelandic jazz-pop, listen to some of the most exciting artists from the Asian diaspora.

With spring just around the corner, it’s time to welcome AAPI Month in full blossom. From rising musical artists to inspiring community leaders, it’s essential to recognize AAPI members of the artistic world and their achievements.

While AAPI Month is a U.S. holiday, the Recording Academy takes a global approach in celebrating artists and creators from across the Asian and Asian American diaspora. This aligns with the Recording Academy's growing mission to expand its reach on a global scale and celebrate international creators outside of the U.S.

Musicians of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander heritage have not only helped establish the music industry, but have transformed it. From Diljit Dosanjh being the first artist to play a Coachella set entirely in Punjabi to Laufey winning a GRAMMY for her jazz-inspired pop, AAPI artists continue to influence music by both honoring tradition and reshaping modern standards.

It’s thrilling to see AAPI musicians continue to take centerstage — from Atarashi Gakko! to Tiger JK ’s memorable sets at Coachella, to surprise appearances from Olivia Rodrigo , Dominic Fike , and Towa Bird. As festival season gets underway, examples of the AAPI starpower from every corner of the world abound.

As one of many ways to celebrate AAPI Month, listen to the GRAMMY.com playlist below — as a reminder to give AAPI musicians not just their May flowers, but their flowers all year-round!

Chung Ha Returns: On 'EENIE MEENIE,' The K-Pop Soloist Is Ready To Step Back Into The Spotlight

Chung Ha was one of K-pop’s most promising soloists, but decided to step back from the industry. Upon her return, Chung Ha wants to tell her fans "that they have the freedom to choose."

It takes courage to become a soloist in K-pop — a scene largely dominated by girl groups and boy groups of the most varied sizes — but more than that, it takes verve. Singer, dancer, and songwriter Chung Ha, 28 years old, knows it better than anyone.

Born in Seoul, South Korea but raised in Dallas, Texas, she first rose to stardom in 2016, after  returning to her home country and participating in Mnet’s trainee competition show "Produce 101." There, Chung Ha caught the eyes of judges and viewers alike for her sharp movements and innate charisma. She placed fourth on the finale, and became a member of I.O.I — the show’s resulting temporary girl group.

While I.O.I and its 11 members found great success, when the group disbanded in early 2017, Chung Ha decided to challenge herself further. In June of that year, she released her solo debut EP, Hands On Me .

Soon, Chung Ha became one of K-pop’s most promising (and somewhat unexpected) soloists — not only did she prove to be an exceptional dancer, but a smooth vocalist as well, full of style and star power. On stage, she commands performances with surgical precision, yet flows with breathtaking grace. She proved her versatility with a string of captivating singles, like the ice-cold "Snapping" and the bewitching "Gotta Go," which reached No.1 on Billboard’s K-pop Hot 100 chart in 2019. Her first studio album, 2021’s Querencia , blended R&B, EDM, reggaeton and even bossa nova with finesse.

But amidst all the success, Chung Ha took a break. She decided not to renew the contract with her previous label, spent more than a year on a hiatus, and even considered abandoning the music industry, as revealed on the YouTube talk show "Gabee’s Rising Star "

Luckily, Chung Ha changed her mind. She signed with MORE VISION, a label founded by singer and rapper Jay Park, and will drop the single album EENIE MEENIE on March 11.

GRAMMY.com caught up with Chung Ha via Zoom to learn more about her comeback — and to dive into her creative process, how she sees herself, and who she wants to be.

You spent more than a year on a hiatus, and even left your previous company. What made you sign with MORE VISION for this new phase of your career?

Jay [Park] reached out to me often. When I talked to the other co-workers at the company, their vision really aligned with mine. I think that was a crucial reason.

For example, I've never toured. I want to start out in small venues, and if I do have a chance I want to make it bigger. I want to work on more collaborations and try different genres of music like [on] "EENIE MEENIE," and they're aligned with me on that.

On "Gabee’s Rising Star," you said that you wanted to study abroad during your hiatus, and that being a celebrity is "just a job." What made you want to come back to music?

I was always interested in psychology. Working in this industry, it's a little chaotic, so I tried to maintain my mental health by [attending] counseling, and then I felt like I wanted to maintain my mental health on my own.

And growing up in Texas, I always had my Mexican friends with me, but I was the only one unable to understand Spanish. I was always interested, but [the break] felt like it was the right time to embrace Spanish more. I wanted to dive into the culture and the language, but at the end of the day, it was all about me maintaining my mental health because I wanted to be in this industry. Me wanting to explore Spanish because I wanted to engage more with my fans. I just realized, Oh, it was all about music. Okay. [ Laughs. ]

Since your last comeback, in what areas do you think you have improved or evolved?

Um… I don't know. I'm gonna need to have a real [live] stage for that. I think that's the kind of question I want to ask my fans to see what gradual changes that they notice, because for me, I feel like I'm still the same. But I want to tap myself [on the back] for trying new genres and being brave about getting out of my comfort zone.

What did you have in mind when you started producing this new album? What's the story behind it?

I was really confused. I was asking people, like, "I don't know what to do. I don't know what's next for me."I feel like I've tried different genres of music and different colors of myself, like "Bicycle," "Play," "Love U," and "Roller Coaster."

I didn't know what to do, so I decided to show both sides of myself. A new [side] with MORE VISION, and the one people are always eager to see, like [on] "Stay Tonight" and "Dream Of You." Those were some of the biggest [songs] that I saw people commenting on. So, the familiar side of me and a new side of me are both in the album, and I'm pretty confident [about it].

You collaborated with Hongjoong from ATEEZ in the lead track "EENIE MEENIE," which represents that new side of yourself. How was that experience?

I have followed ATEEZ since the beginning of their career. Their performance is so mind-blowing, they have that special energy that only they can give, so I was always inspired by them.

And then, on "EENIE MEENIE" there is a rap part, so when I heard the track I was like, Oh, I am not rapping . [ Laughs .] That's just too new for me. I sing-rap in "EENIE MEENIE," but that’s about it. So, I needed a real rapper and a real captain on my side and I thought Hongjoong was a perfect fit. After I heard his verse, it was so great, more than I ever expected. He definitely gave that final touch.

The other song on your album, "I’m Ready," represents your familiar side with driving house beats and a mesmerizing atmosphere, almost like a sequel to "Stay Tonight" and "Dream of You." As for the title, what are you ready for?

I guess I'm navigating through new things, and I don't know how it's gonna come out. [People] might say it's a failure, they might say it's a success, they might say I'm brave to challenge myself, but I'm just ready to face all that.

Even though someone might say, "Oh, I don't think it's the right fit for Chung Ha" or "I liked the old Chung Ha better," I don't think I'm afraid of getting judged, or getting rates on anything. I'm just ready to be more adventurous. Being too nervous might drag you into this anxiety space, but just being nervous in general with music and releasing new things is what makes me keep going.

I think people need that nervous feeling, being out of their comfort zone. You never know how you're going to feel, how the outcome is going to be.

Do you remember any specific experiences where you were trying something new and it turned out better than expected?

Oh, "Stay Tonight"was one of them. When I first heard the track, I was like, U m… this is too high. I don't know if K-pop lovers will like this song , because it was more [Western] pop than K-pop. It was right after I dropped "Snapping"and "Gotta Go," so I was like, Are my fans ready for this?

But [I thought] hey, you know what, let's just have fun. Let's just try new things. Let's vogue. [ Laughs ] I've always wanted to vogue, so I did that, and it became one of my epic pieces of performance. It didn’t go big in the charts or anything, but it became a real standout from a more artistic point of view.

EENIE MEENIE represents a new start for you, and both songs in the album talk about trusting yourself and your choices. Since you participated in the songwriting, is that what you have been experiencing lately? How do you recognize what feels right for you?

I feel like you never know what's right, but for me, I decide [something] when it keeps on popping in my head. Like, I would just be calm and see where my mind goes and what my [fandom] HAART keeps on telling me.

If your heart moves that way, I’d rather just do it and regret, than not do it and regret. That’s how I trust my instincts, listening to what I really want.

You mentioned that you see K-pop and Western pop as one. What do you think about the global growth of K-pop, and Western artists trying K-pop, or artists collaborating?

I think it's wonderful. I mean, the only difference is the culture and the language, and how we make our music with different rules and stuff. And it's really awesome [to see] other artists trying out Korean, trying out the marketing strategy of what we have always done. But it's the same with Korean artists, they try to go abroad and then try Western music.

Trying different cultures is getting more natural than splitting what's K-pop and what’s pop. I think it's all gathering into one because music is one, and we love music.

Is it easier for you to see everything as one because you are Korean, but you lived in America for so many years?

Yes, I think it was more natural for me to try different things. It was fun to get to know things like, Oh, this is Western style music, Western marketing strategy, or Western businesses, it goes on like this, and then Korean businesses go on like this . So it's all about learning.

You mentioned in an interview with Teen Vogue that you like to portray characters in your songs, but recently you have been telling your own story in them as well. How do you find the balance between those two possibilities?

I don't initially choose what to do before I hear the music. I hear it first, and then decide, like Oh, I want to share a story of mine, because I have this experience and my current state of mind is this, but sometimes it's just Oh, this is a new character I've never tried before. I want to be her, or I want to be him, or whatever. Let me try that out, let me see what it tastes like. [ Laughs. ] When new music comes to me, whatever character, whatever story comes up first, I would go with that.

And for this album, are you a character or are you portraying your life story?

I’m portraying my life story in both songs. I had a lot of choices to make throughout the beginning of my new career [after leaving my former company], like choosing a label, choosing a new logo, choosing songs, and other things, but in the end I just like what I like to do.

I came back to the music industry, and I really want people to embrace whatever they want to do. To tell them that they have the freedom to choose more than predetermined answers. I wanted to encourage that.

In another moment of your interview on "Gabee’s Rising Star," you said "When people think of Chung Ha, all that comes to mind is ‘Gotta Go’."Do you still believe in that?

Yes, and no. But I’m very grateful, because that song is what elevated me to the next step, and it gave me the courage to try different genres of music. But "Stay Tonight" and other pieces of music also identify me in different ways.

Who is Chung Ha, then? How would you like to be recognized?

Definitely not "Gotta Go." [ Laughs. ] I'm not that person now. I'm just a girl who loves music, and I'm just grateful and thankful, always. As much as I was diligent before, I want to keep on doing that, and I want to meet my fans more.

As Chung Ha, I want to ask my fans who they think I am, because I try to be as authentic as possible with music and my personality. Also I'm an adventurous person. Love to challenge myself. And I’m ready to go.

Listen: GRAMMY.com's Women's History Month 2024 Playlist: Female Empowerment Anthems From Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, Jennie & More

This March, the Recording Academy celebrates Women's History Month with pride and joy. Press play on this official playlist that highlights uplifting songs from Taylor Swift, Victoria Monét, Anitta and more.

From commanding stages to blasting through stereos, countless women have globally graced the music industry with their creativity. And though they've long been underrepresented , tides are changing: in just the last few years, female musicians have been smashing records left and right, conquering top song and album charts and selling sold-out massive tours .

This year, Women's History Month follows a particularly historic 66th GRAMMY Awards , which reflected the upward swing of female musicians dominating music across the board. Along with spearheading the majority of the ceremony's performances, women scored bigtime in the General Field awards — with wins including Best New Artist , Record Of The Year , Song Of The Year , and Album Of The Year .

Female empowerment anthems, in particular, took home major GRAMMY gold. Miley Cyrus ' "Flowers" took home two awards , while Victoria Monét was crowned Best New Artist thanks to the success of her album Jaguar II and its hit single "On My Mama." As those two songs alone indicate, female empowerment takes many different shapes in music — whether it's moving on from a relationship by celebrating self-love or rediscovering identity through motherhood.

The recent successes of women in music is a testament to the trailblazing artists who have made space for themselves in a male-dominated industry — from the liberating female jazz revolution of the '20s to the riot grrl movement of the '90s. Across genres and decades, the classic female empowerment anthem has strikingly metamorphosed into diverse forms of defiance, confidence and resilience.

No matter how Women's History Month is celebrated, it's about women expressing themselves, wholeheartedly and artistically, and having the arena to do so . And in the month of March and beyond, women in the music industry deserve to be recognized not only for their talent, but ambition and perseverance — whether they're working behind the stage or front-and-center behind the mic.

From Aretha Franklin 's "RESPECT" to Beyoncé 's "Run the World (Girls)," there's no shortage of female empowerment anthems to celebrate women's accomplishments in the music industry. Listen to GRAMMY.com's 2024 Women's History Month playlist on streaming services below.

9 Ways Women Dominated The 2024 GRAMMYs

9 Essential K-Pop/Western Collabs: From BTS And Megan Thee Stallion, To IVE And Saweetie

From Jungkook and Usher's tribute to their shared musical idol, to BLACKPINK and Selena Gomez' sugary sweet collab, K-pop and Western artists of all genres are joining forces to create killer hits.

It’s impossible to ignore the growing global popularity of K-pop. Although Korean pop has been around for decades, the genre's meteoric worldwide success over the past 10 years is reminiscent of Beatlemania and the early 2000s American boy band craze. With a steady increase year-over-year in album sales and K-pop groups touring the U.S. and Europe, interest in K-pop shows no signs of slowing down .

Initially launched in South Korea as a music subgenre with Western pop, R&B and hip-hop influences in the '90s, the K-pop industry is valued at around $10 billion .

Given the worldwide appetite for K-pop, several Western musicians are keen to partner with K-pop acts crossing over into more international markets, often with songs sung partially or entirely in English. While K-pop artists do not need Western artists to be successful — BTS sold out London’s Wembley stadium in under 90 minutes back in 2019, and BLACKPINK made Coachella history twice with performances in 2019 and 2023 — K-pop's massive fanbase and multi-genre influence make it an ideal collaboration for everyone from rappers and singers to electronic DJs.

But don’t take our word for it. Here are nine of the most iconic K-Pop/Western collaborations (not in any order; they are all great songs!).

Usher and Jungkook - "Standing Next to You (Usher Remix)" (2024)

The maknae (the youngest member of the group) of global K-pop superstars BTS and the King of R&B are both having banner years: Jungkook released his debut solo album, and Usher just performed at the Super Bowl .

The Bangtan Boys have cited Usher as a significant influence (even singing a callback to his 2001 hit "U Got It Bad" in their No. 1 song, "Butter"), so BTS fans were delighted when the Jungkook tapped Usher for a remix of "Standing Next to You." The song marks the fourth single from his Billboard 200 chart-topping debut album, Golden .

Both singers count Michael Jackson as a major influence. In their collaboration video, Usher and Jungkook pay tribute to the King of Pop as they slide, pop, and lock across the slick floor of an abandoned warehouse.

John Legend and Wendy of Red Velvet - "Written in the Stars" (2018)

R&B singer/pianist John Legend was the perfect choice for an R&B ballad with Wendy, the main vocalist of K-pop quintet Red Velvet. The final song on the five-track SM Station x 0 , a digital music project, "Written in the Stars," is a beautiful, mid-tempo love song. A bit of a departure from K-pop’s typical upbeat sound, Wendy and Legend are in perfect harmony over a warm yet melancholic rhythm.

As Red Velvet’s main vocalist, Wendy was the ideal voice for this collaboration. Additionally, she split her childhood between Canada and the U.S., and has been comfortable singing in English since Red Velvet debuted in 2014. This wasn't her first collab with a Western artist: In 2017, she released an English-language version of the pop ballad " Vente Pa’Ca " with Ricky Martin .

BLACKPINK and Selena Gomez - "Ice Cream" (2020)

A powerhouse debut single, BLACKPINK collaborated with pop royalty Selena Gomez on the massive 2020 hit "Ice Cream."

An electropop-bubblegum fusion filled with dairy double entendres, "Ice Cream" was an enormous success for both Gomez and the BLACKPINK girls. The track peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has racked up nearly 900 million YouTube views to date.

Written by a consortium of hitmakers, including Ariana Grande and BLACKPINK’s longtime songwriter and producer Teddy Park (a former K-pop idol himself), "Ice Cream" shows that YG Entertainment’s golden foursome and Gomez were the correct partnership for this track. The pop-trap bop marked the first time a K-pop girl group broke the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and immediately solidified BLACKPINK as global superstars.

Snoop Dogg and Monsta X - "How We Do" (2022)

West Coast rap godfather Snoop Dogg has quietly become one of the go-to Western acts for K-pop collabs, working with Psy, BTS, Girls’ Generation and 2NE1. K-pop is the Dogg Father's "guilty pleasure, " and he performed at the Mnet Asian Music Awards with Dr. Dre in 2011. Without Snoop's love of K-pop, the world might not have gotten this fun and energetic collaboration with Snoop and Monsta X, a five-member boy group under Starship Entertainment.

The song appears in The Spongebob Movie: Sponge On The Run in a dance segment where Snoop, decked out in a pink and purple Western suit, is accompanied by zombie dancers. Though we do not see the members of Monsta X, their harmonious crooning is the perfect accent to Snoop Dogg’s trademark casual West Coast flow.

BTS and Steven Aoki - "MIC Drop (Steve Aoki remix)" (2017)

No K-pop list is complete with a nod to the magnificent seven, and "MIC Drop" is one of their catchiest Western collabs to date.

"Mic Drop" is quintessential BTS: a nod to hip-hop with a heavy bass line and fun choreography. While the original version of "MIC Drop" is excellent, the remix with EDM superstar DJ Steve Aoki and rapper Desiigner cracked the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 — the first of many hits for the Bulletproof Boy Scouts.

Released at a time when BTS were just starting their ascent to chart-topping Western dominance, the track's boastful lyrics and tension-building electro-trap production offered an excellent introduction to the group that would soon become international superstars.

JYJ, Kanye West and Malik Yusef - "Ayyy Girl" (2010)

A truly deep K-pop cut, you’d be hard-pressed to find many people who know that Kanye West collaborated with a first-generation K-pop group over 13 years ago. Released as the lead single on JYJ’s English-language album The Beginning , West’s signature bravado and wordplay are on full display over a track that sounds like the Neptunes produced it.

The song garnered attention in the U.S., but after a string of bad luck (including a severely delayed U.S. visa process and issues with their management company, SM Entertainment), JYJ could not capitalize on their American success. The group continued to see success in Korea and Japan in the early 2010s but never made a splash in the Western market again.

IVE and Saweetie - "All Night" (2024)

A reimagining of Icona Pop’s 2013 song of the same name, "All Night," sees fourth-generation K-pop girl group IVE partner with rap’s resident glamor girl Saweetie for a funky, electronic-infused pop song that’s perfect for dancing from dusk till dawn.

"All Night" is the first English song for the Starship Entertainment-backed group. Interestingly, none of the members of IVE have individual lines in the song, choosing instead to sing the lyrics in a six-part harmony. This choice is exciting but fun, giving listeners the feeling that they are more than welcome to sing along.

The girl group embarked on their first 24-date world tour in January 2024, with stops in the U.S., Asia, Europe and South America. Given their quest for global dominance, there’s a good chance "All Night" won’t be IVE's last English-language release.

BTS and Megan Thee Stallion - "Butter (Remix)" (2021)

BTS’ "Butter" had already spent three weeks atop the Billboard charts and was declared the "song of the summer" when the group’s label announced Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion as the guest star for the song’s remix in late August 2021. The GRAMMY-nominated septet is no stranger to collaborating with Western musicians, having worked with Halsey , Jason Derulo, and Coldplay .

Though only slightly altered from the original (Megan’s verse was added in place of the song’s second original verse, along with several ad-libs), the remix was praised by both fans and critics alike, catapulting the song’s return back to the No. 1. Although the collaborators did not release a new music video featuring the group and the self-proclaimed "Hot Girl Coach," three members of BTS’ "dance line" (members J-Hope , Jungkook and Jimin ) released a specially choreographed dance video . Additionally, Megan was a surprise guest during BTS’ record-breaking Permission to Dance LA concert in November of the same year.

LE SSERAFIM and Niles Rodgers - "Unforgiven" (2023)

GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Nile Rodgers ' first foray into K-pop was a partnership with LE SSERAFIM , a fourth-gen girl group from the same parent company behind BTS. "Unforgiven" was released earlier this year as the lead single from the group’s debut album of the same name.

A darker take on the familiar K-pop formula with A Western feel and look (the young quintuplet dons cowboy hats, boots and bolo ties in the song’s accompanying music video), "Unforgiven" is about rebellion and being a fierce, strong and independent risk taker. That riskiness drew Rodgers' ear.

"It seems like a lot of the K-pop that I'm hearing lately, the…chord changes are a lot more interesting than what's been happening [in other music fields] over the last few years," he told GRAMMY.com in 2023. "I come from a jazz background, so to hear chord changes like that is really cool. They’re not afraid, which is great to me."

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour might be about to do for Europe what it did for America

  • The European leg of Taylor Swift's record-breaking Eras Tour kicked off on Thursday.
  • The Eras tour  is the first concert tour to gross over $1 billion, estimates showed.
  • She's crossing the Atlantic at a time when several of the continent's economies are struggling.

Insider Today

The European leg of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour kicked off in Paris on Thursday.

Last summer, the "Tortured Poets Department" singer's concerts helped boost the US economy, driving up spending on everything from restaurants to hotels across the country.

Estimates showed that the Eras tour is the first concert tour to gross over $1 billion.

In 2023, the research firm QuestionPro estimated that the Eras Tour would boost US consumer spending by an eye-popping $4.6 billion . Meanwhile, key business figurers ranging from Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi to policymakers at the Federal Reserve have noted the positive impact Swift's concerts have had on business.

Economists have even coined new phrases like " Swiftonomics " and " funflation " to refer to the idea that in the aftermath of the pandemic, Americans are more willing to splash the cash on live events that might lead to once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

Now, after quick pit stops in Singapore — where Swift's big-money shows made the country mountains of money and sparked concert envy among its Southeast Asian neighbors — and Australia , Swift is set to embark on an 18-city European tour.

She could be set to give the continent's economy a similar boost.

Planeloads of American fans have followed her across the Atlantic, The Associated Press reported on Thursday, which is likely to fuel an uplift in spending.

When Beyoncé came to Sweden's capital, Stockholm, last summer, economists noted that her fans had spent so much on hotels and meals that they'd triggered a slight bump in inflation. This summer, the city is expecting 10,000 extra concertgoers to fly over from the US to see Swift.

Hotel booking statistics also help to capture the sense of how in-demand Eras Tour tickets are.

By August 2023, hotels in Cardiff and Liverpool in the UK — where Swift will be stopping in June — had already reached occupancy levels of more than 50% for her tour dates, hotel research firm STR reported, with rooms in Cardiff going for $230 more than they typically do.

In December, vacation rental data firm AirDNA found that demand for short-term rentals during Swift's tour dates in Vienna, Austria, and Warsaw, Poland, had already surged by around 2,000%.

The economies of Europe arguably need that boost in spending even more than the US did. The ongoing war in Ukraine has hammered the continent, with one country where Swift will play — Ireland — which was in a technical recession as of late last year — and several others, including the UK, having only just exited a period of negative growth.

Perhaps that means it's the perfect time to welcome back Miss Americana.
