What time of year is best for bioluminescent bay in Grand Cayman?

Grand Cayman bioluminescence bay is visible all year long. However, it’s best when there’s a new moon , meaning there’s little to no light in the night sky so the plankton can shine brightly!

Best places to stay in grand cayman.

You’ll find most of your hotels and resorts along Seven Mile Beach. Many villas and rentals are located on the North Side near Rum Point. I prefer the luxury life when I visit Grand Cayman, so I usually opt for villas 😉

An example of bioluminescence

What is Bioluminescent Bay (Bio Bay)? Bio Bay is a bay of water on the North end of Grand Cayman situated between Rum Point and Starfish Point .  Before Hurricane Ivan in 2004 the water was too deep for the bioluminescence plankton known as the 'Pyrodinium bahamense' to thrive.  That all changed with Hurricane Ivan and now the conditions are perfect for this microscopic plankton to thrive. As a result, some estimates suggest there are between 800K - 1 MM of these plankton in a single gallon of water in the bay.  Either way, this is one of only a few locations in all the Caribbean to see this glowing phenomena and from many reports one of the brightest.

Why book a grand cayman bio bay charter considered by some to be the 'northern lights' of the underwater word, the bio bay in grand cayman is one of only a few places worldwide where you can see this glowing phenomena.  upon entering the bio bay during your boat tour, you will start to notice that the water coming off the propeller is glowing - this isn't a light rather it is the first sign of this microscopic plankton getting disturbed and thus releasing their light.  when the conditions are perfect (no moon light), you can easily see this from the comfort of the boat. either way, it is much more pronounced in the water. we recommend that you put on a mask and hop in the water to see exactly what we're talking about.   a lot of our guests tell us the bio bay feels like a scene out of the matrix or avatar.  seeing their friends/family glow in the water in the darkness of night is something they don't soon forget..

Bioluminescence glowing from the boat

How can you enjoy Bio Bay? Bio Bay can only be enjoyed when it is dark out otherwise the light pollution will block out the glowing plankton.  Therefore, we generally only go to the Bio Bay when the moon is between the third and first quarter although it is possible to go at other times depending on the time of moon rise.  Either way, after a day of fun on the water doing a Stingray City excursion and Starfish Point tour as a part of your private Grand Cayman boat charter experience , we will take you to a beach bar where you can watch the sunset and enjoy dinner/drinks with your toes in the sand while it gets dark.  Once dark, we take a short, calm and relaxing cruise over to Bio Bay.  After spending 20 minutes or so observing this natural wonder, we head back to the dock enjoying the ~25 minute cruise across the North Sound with nothing but the stars in sight.   Trips that include a stop at Bio Bay generally end around 9 PM local time depending on the time of year.

Bio bay may be a newer attraction in grand cayman thanks to hurricane ivan in 2004, but it’s not the only attraction you can enjoy while navigating the beautiful waters of the cayman islands. here at cobalt custom charters, we offer custom boat tours that include jaunts to stingray city , starfish point , rum point ,  unique snorkeling spots scattered around the island , and so much more., book a custom grand cayman boat charter today and let us help create memories that will last a lifetime, how can you enjoy bio bay bio bay can only be enjoyed when it is dark out otherwise the light pollution will block out the glowing plankton.  therefore, we generally only go to the bio bay when the moon is between the third and first quarter although it is possible to go at other times depending on the time of moon rise.  either way, after a day of fun on the water doing a stingray city excursion and starfish point tour as a part of your custom charter experience , we will take you to a beach bar where you can watch the sunset and enjoy dinner/drinks with your toes in the sand while it gets dark.  once dark, we take a short, calm and relaxing cruise over to bio bay.  after spending 20 minutes or so observing this natural wonder, we head back to the dock enjoying the ~25 minute cruise across the north sound with nothing but the stars in sight.   trips that include a stop at bio bay generally end around 9 pm local time depending on the time of year..

The beauty of Bio Bay, along with its rare bioluminescent phenomenon, has increased the demand for vacations to this awe-inspiring destination. More travelers seeking this adventure results in various positive revenue impacts for Grand Cayman.

Some of the direct benefits include:

  • Increased bookings for bioluminescence tour operators
  • More overnight stays in hotels and vacation rentals
  • Higher demand for local restaurants, bars, and shops

In addition to these direct financial gains, the popularity of the bioluminescence tours indirectly promotes Grand Cayman as an appealing vacation destination for eco-tourists and marine enthusiasts alike.

These visitors often enjoy other water-based activities and excursions during their stay, such as:

  • Scuba diving
  • Stingray City visits
  • Kayaking and paddleboarding
  • Deep-sea fishing

As you plan your vacation to Grand Cayman, remember to be mindful of the fragile ecosystem that makes the bioluminescence snorkel tours possible. By ensuring that the dinoflagellates and the bay’s natural environment are protected, you can help preserve this magical underwater experience for future travelers. Booking your tour through a reputable, eco-conscious company (like I mentioned) can significantly support this effort.

Grand cayman.

There are only a few places in the world where you can experience the bioluminescence. Bio Bay, located in Grand Cayman of the Cayman Islands, is one of these places. You may be wondering what exactly are bioluminescence. Well bioluminescent plankton is an organism that emits light when moved and mixed with air. This movement causes oxidation which releases the glow you will see in the water. Each organism stores energy from the sun all day just to release this glow just once per night. Making an awesome activity to partake in during your stay here in Grand Cayman.

With your own private charter to view the bioluminescent, you are able to get into the water, setting off your own light reaction as you swim through the Bio Bay. We highly recommend putting on a mask and snorkel during your visit here for a whole new experience. Tour Description

We take a boat to the bioluminescent bay (20 minute boat ride).

Once at the Bio Bay, you have the option to snorkel with the bioluminescence.

The visibility of the bioluminescence is 10x better in the water with a mask.

The mask allows you to see thousands of bright sparkles underwater. If you stay on the boat, you will see exactly what is seen on a kayak, it's just significantly better in the water with a mask. The bioluminescence is caused by millions of single-celled plankton called dinoflagellates that give off light when disturbed in the water at night.

  • Water where we snorkel is only 4 feet deep.
  • The water is not cold.
  • There are NO sharks; there has never been a shark attack in Cayman.
  • Bio Bay is calm with no currents or waves.
  • Jellyfish are not a problem because we have full body wet suits, dive gloves and dive shoes. There are few jellyfish in the winter months, but in the summer months, there are more jellyfish due to warmer waters. Even if you were stung by one of these jellyfish, it doesn't hurt and the itchiness only lasts for 5 minutes.

This tour typically departs 15 minutes after the sun sets. It operates year-round, but only for about 2 weeks each month, due to the moon cycle. It is primarily the moon rise/set times that impact bio visibility, not the moon phase.

What Is The Bio Bay?

The Bio Bay (Bioluminescent Bay) is a man-made bay which was dredged out nearly 30 years ago.

The Bio Bay was created as part of a real estate project; there are private villas on the shore of the bay.

The physical features of the Bio Bay trap the dinoflagellate plankton, which is why there is such a high concentration of these plankton in the bay.

There is a myth that boats and/or snorkeling are bad for the dinoflagellate plankton in the Bio Bay.

There is no evidence to suggest this is the case; there have been boats in the Bio Bay since its inception; all of the homes on the Bio Bay have docks and boats.

The visibility of the bioluminescence is always fluctuating. The factors that determine the visibility of the bioluminescence is the tide level and weather.

Additional Information

Our bioluminescence boat/snorkel tour departs from the Cayman Islands Yacht Club. This is on the west side of Grand Cayman, near Seven Mile Beach. This is NOT the George Town Yacht Club.

Is it safe to swim?

You are allowed to swim, but our company discourages swimming to prevent fouling the water and the risk of being stung by jellyfish.

It is a fact that thousands of jellyfish live in the bay year round on the sea bed. These jellyfish have a mild sting, but it may be very uncomfortable when stung depending on the individual and where on their bodies they get stung. There may also be other species of jellyfish with a more potent sting so again, we generally discourage swimming.

However , if you are determined to swim, PLEASE ensure you arrive for the tour free of chemicals/lotions that are not reef safe from your body before the tour. Wearing a long-sleeved rash guard would be a good idea too.

Harmful chemicals/lotions in and on your skin/hair wash off your body and end up trapped in Bio Bay harming the microscopic organisms due to the low water exchange. Since the glowing creatures are trapped in the bay, allowing their glow to increase in number, this also means that if we bring pollution to the bay these pollutants foul the waters and are also trapped. Pollutants trapped in the bay take longer periods of time to be washed out or break down and decompose. Please be respectful to the natural phenomenon.

This ecosystem is fragile!

What to Wear:

You will get wet on this tour from walking 1-2 feet in to the shallow sandy bottom to and from the boat. You will also get wet when seated down in the observation deck while interacting with the Bioluminescence. We suggest swimsuit, t-shirt, and shoes that can get wet.  Some may enjoy a long sleeve for the ride. A towel and spare dry shorts are recommended for a comfortable drive back at the end of the tour.

Click here  for our transportation suggestions.

Accessibility On The Boat

When guests arrive at Rum Point, we meet on a sandy beach before walking to the shoreline where the boat is parked. We will walk into water that is roughly a foot deep, then walk up a sturdy staircase onto the boat. (Picture below to show the steps) From there, we kindly ask all guests to walk up a second staircase with handrails on either side and sit on a comfortable padded bench to and from the journey to the bay. Once the anchor is set, guests are able to walk down the stairs and interact with the bioluminescence from the custom designed observation deck.

Cancellation Policy

In order to continue running the high-quality trips that our guests are accustomed to experiencing with us, we need to know that you will show up. Once you book a trip with us your reservations are protected. Unlike the airline industry, we do not overbook our tours to hedge against potential cancellations. We are committed to providing you with the experience that you asked for, in return, we ask that you commit to honoring your reservation.

  • For reservations of 7 or less guests, a minimum of 48 hours notice prior to scheduled tour time is required in order to receive a refund minus a booking fee of $10 USD per person + processing fees. Cancellations made within 48 hours prior to the tour time will not receive a refund.
  • For reservations of 8 or more guests, a minimum of 5 days notice prior to scheduled tour time is required in order to receive a refund, minus a booking fee of $10 USD per person + processing fees. Cancellations made within 5 days of the tour time will not receive a refund.

Bioluminescent Bay

Grand Cayman is one of a handful of destinations where you can experience the Bioluminescence phenomenon. This is one tour that should not be missed!

Rosita Ritch

There are only a handful of destinations where you can experience the Bioluminescence phenomenon and Cayman is fortunate enough to be one of them!

Bioluminescence is the emission of light from the extremely high concentrations of bioluminescent phytoplankton that live in the water. When disturbed, they emit a burst of light flash lasting a fraction of a second. This light emission is used as protection to scare predators.

The Bioluminescent Bay is located on the North Side of Grand Cayman. It is a 10-15 minute kayak from Rum Point, Starfish Point and Kaibo, and approximately a 45 minute ride by boat from Seven Mile Beach.

Starfish Point

Stingray city & the sandbar, mastic reserve & trail.

In order to experience the full Bioluminescence phenomenon, this tour requires a dark sky in order for the bioluminescence to be seen properly. Therefore most tours only operate this tour at certain times of the moon cycle. Usually the week before and the week after the New Moon.

Bear in mind that many other factors will affect the visibility of the glow level and brightness. These factors include temperature, weather and tides.

During the summer months, the Bioluminescent Bay is generally packed with small jellyfish that may sting you if they are disturbed.

Below are two companies that offer tours to the Bioluminescent Bay.

Cayman Kayaks

Cayman Kayaks specialise in providing sustainable Bioluminescent Tours by double kayak and Cayman’s only electric boat.

Bioluminescent Bay Grand Cayman: I Visited And Reviewed With Pics

The Bio Bay in Grand Cayman is a captivating natural phenomenon. In the evening, bioluminescent microorganisms create a gentle, blue-green illumination in the water, making a kayak or boat tour an enchanting experience. While the sight is undoubtedly magical, managing expectations is important as the brightness can vary depending on the moon’s brightness.

I hired a private boat from Captain Marvin Watersports with my friends to Stingray City, Rum Point, for supper and sundown drinks, then to Bioluminescent Bay. The guides on our tour were fantastic, giving us time to swim and experience the Bio Bay like superheroes! Seeing the blue-green shoot from your hands under the water is incredible. But there are inevitable curveballs I wish I had known about before attempting this trip.

Upon my visit with the crew to Cayman, we decided to visit Sand Point Road, where Bio Bay is located. In the rest of this article, I will walk you through my experience there and what you should look out for as you plan your trip to this exciting destination on the Caribbean island.

What You Should Know Before Going

I discovered that Bioluminescent Bay in Cayman is only accessible by boat tour. Many boat charter options can include a trip to Bio Bay at the end of the day’s charter. Alternatively, you can book a direct 2-hour private charter trip to the place.

  • My other friends and I stayed at Seven Mile Beach but planned to go on a bioluminescent bay tour using Captain Marvin Watersports. We had a supermoon during that period. This is always good for bioluminescence since the tides impact the amount of luminescence you see.
  • I don’t recommend you go when the moon is bright because it decreases the impact of the lights in the water, so you won’t get those Instagram-worthy pictures to capture the moment.
  • I also recommend you go on weekends, particularly on Sunday, which we did, because there was less traffic. Meanwhile, I first went to the East End, ate at Tukka East, and watched the sunset before heading to the departure location for the 9:30 pm tour.
  • Depending on your bioluminescence tour, the typical boat charter service will depart for the bioluminescence tour 15 minutes after sunset. The idea is to ensure it is completely dark when arriving at Bio Bay.
  • Before leaving, take a set of fresh clothes or a towel because you can get wet.
  • If possible, don’t bring valuables along. There won’t be a safe place to store them in the kayak. Also, you may flip over.

When is Bioluminescent Bay open?

Since the bay functions at its best when it’s dark, you tend to see people visiting the Bioluminescent Bay in Cayman, mostly at night. List most other water activities and destinations on the island; there are no straight-jacket opening and closing times. The time frame for your visit depends on the specifications of your tour package.

Do you need to book in advance to visit Bioluminescent Bay?

Yes, Bioluminescent Bay in Cayman is accessible by water, and you need to book a boat charter (private or otherwise) that can take you there. The Bioluminescent Bay is located on the north side of Grand Cayman.

It is a 10-15 minute kayak ride from Rum Point, Starfish Point, and Kaibo and approximately a 45-minute ride by boat from Seven Mile Beach .

Bioluminescent Bay Grand Cayman Review

My Experience at the Bio Bay

There are two main ways to enjoy a tour of this bay. You can experience the Bioluminescence Glass Bottom Kayak Tour or the boat option.

Before we went on the kayaks, we got a brief tutorial on the starfish and how their population has been wiped out because people lifted them out of the water. I learned that the starfish can flip around if you turn them upside down, but they eat the little starfish. So they advise us not to place smaller ones near the big ones.

The kayak tour was a 30-minute paddle against the current to the bay. The paddling wasn’t strenuous, but it required effort and attention. But we enjoyed the generated lights as we agitated the microscopic creatures in the water.

The bay is a residential area, so getting accommodation after the tour was not challenging.

After getting on the sandy embankment, our guide gave us a quick astrology lesson where we learned about the two different types of jellyfish.

The highlight of the tour was the bioluminescence. It was a sight to behold.

The colorful lights around our paddles and the flashing lights became something out of Star Wars.

The glass-bottom kayaks were neat, and paddling back from the bay was easy. The overall tour to Bio Bay took 2 hours, and beyond the display, you will learn a lot about starfish, kayaking, and the wonder of bioluminescence.

My regret was not going in a swimsuit because we got soaked. After research, I discovered that some boat charters offer free swimsuits and gloves when you come on board—for example, George Watersports.

What Makes the Bio Bay in Cayman Special?

The spectacular sight at the bay is the climax of your tour. When the water’s movement disturbs the microscopic organisms, they emit a bright blue light. So as you paddle the kayak or swim in the water, you agitate the organisms to emit a glow in the dark.

The experience is indeed unreal and unforgettable.

If you book a tour with the right company, all the necessary equipment, such as snorkel masks, will be given to you. But you still need to bring some reef-safe sunscreen and a towel. T

Is it safe to swim in a Bioluminescent bay?

Swimming in a bioluminescent bay is generally safe, and safety protocols are in place whenever you book a tour of Bio Bay on Cayman.

However, according to a study by WebMD , an online publisher of news and information about human health and well-being, some bioluminescent algae produce toxins that are harmful to marine wildlife, humans, and anything that comes into contact with them.

So this is not an everyday activity. But visiting once in a while isn’t harmful.
