Hanalei River & Bay Paddle and Snorkel Exploration

We have time to do it all!

Blue water paddling to snorkeling, bird watching, beach combing … all during a memorable day that combines 4 hours of  intermittent sea and river kayaking with beach and reef time, all within the enchantment of the Hanalei River, Bay, and estuary.

Paddle the calm idyllic and scenic Hanalei Heritage River as your expert guide(s) keep you safe and entertained with local lore, legends, and natural history.

Spend time exploring Hanalei Bay with magnificent panoramic views of distant Makana Peak (known also as Bali Hai).

View the nearby fluted ridges and peaks of Namolokama, Mamalahoa, and Hihimanu, which lie like silent sentinels, whose waterfalls drop gourds of water into Wai’oli Valley, which lies behind the town of Hanalei.

We often see Green Sea Turtles and sometimes Spinner Dolphins accompanied by avian antics of such birds as the Boobie and Layson Albatross .  Also seen are shorebirds and river birds such as the Wandering Tattler , Gallinule and Black-Capped Night Heron  to name a few.

Depending on sea conditions and/or group dynamics we can paddle west along the perimeter of the sandy shores of Hanalei Bay and into the lovely waters of Wai’oli stream. Or more commonly venture East to the picturesque sandy beach along Kenomene Bay (Hideaways), for great snorkeling or beach combing.

Kevin at Falls

Most kayaking in Hawaii is done on the ocean, which at times can be rough and at other times can be downright dangerous. Kauai offers the unique opportunity to kayak NEAR the ocean on some jungle waterways. This makes for a safe, tranquil outing ... and an opportunity to absorb the sights, sounds, and smells of the jungle from a unique perspective. The Blue Lagoon Kayak Tour starts out on the Hanalei River, and during periods of high surf the tour may focus entirely on the river. Just FYI ... it's a fascinating jungle environment with bamboo and hau bushes lining the banks of the river. I have seen Green Sea Turtle upriver as this stream is directly tied to the ocean... a fascinating experience!

When ocean conditions permit, this tour will head out the river mouth and navigate the channel out into the bay. On really calm ocean days they may paddle around the corner to the east and land at an isolated beach which also offers some terrific snorkeling. With this destination in mind, the tour will spend most of the time on the ocean and just a little time on the river. That's a unique aspect of this tour ... it adapts to the seasons.

Never kayaked before? No worries ... it isn't difficult at all to get the hang of it. All the instruction that you need is provided. It doesn't take a tremendous amount of effort to paddle ... you'll be surprised at how easily you move through calm waters with very gentle strokes.

This tour is OK with children ... they don't have a minimum age per se; parents know their kids and their capabilities. As a general rule, these tours are fine for anyone who is of average health and is comfortable in and around the water.

While it is tempting to take it easy in Hawaii — whether you’re exhausted from a rough week of work, or have come to the islands with a relaxing vacation in mind — sometimes it’s important to be a little more adventurous. That’s where one of my favorite water sport comes in: kayaking. Whether you are taking a river-guided journey into the jungle, leisurely paddling through the crystalline waters of one of the islands’ most popular bays, or cruising down the coast alongside rocky cliffs, kayaking adventures in Hawaii are as unique as they are unforgettable. This tour, however, might just be the best the Aloha State has to offer and we can’t wait to take you along for the ride.

Kayak Kauai Hanalei River & Blue Lagoon Kayak & Snorkel Adventure

Overall rating.

4.54 / 5

Awesome adventure for our family of 4!

My husband and two teenagers loved this kayak adventure! Our guides were very friendly, funny and calm. Jay was very informative and gave us a wonderful history lesson on the island and its culture. He did a wonderful job preparing us for our journey and guiding us through the river and ocean. We did make the journey to the farthest beach on the ocean and it was well worth it! We snorkeled with some sea turtles and enjoyed our time at the beach. It was a great way to finish up our trip on Kauai. I appreciate all that our guides did to inform us and keep us safe as well as teach us about the island and its culture. I would highly recommend this!

Aloha Jamie, You went on our other "Secret Tour"! Our Hanalei Blue Lagoon is slowly getting more recognition and Jay and our other rive/ocean guides are very responsible for this trend. Jay is great in the field and to work with and as the summer season comes up with us, often is guiding and sea kayaking the more rigorous Na Pali coast. Thanks for sharing your kind words, as I will with Jay. Stay active and well. A hui hou, Micco/Head Guide

Wonderful experience!

Our guide was a pro through and through! Excellent adventure for our family of five!

Aloha TNT, Our Hanalei Blue Lagoon is slowly gaining popularity. Thanks for sharing. We do pride ourselves for having a cast of pro-guides, who know how to have fun, keep you safe and informed. Thanks for sharing and will share your kind words with staff. Stay active and well. A hui hou, Micco/Head Guide.

Fun experience

Really fun day on the water, we got to see some hawaii state fish

Aloha Kara, So you saw our Humuhumunukunukuapua`a, state fish. Pretty cool. Did you sea turtles? Lately we also have been seeing once in a while little pods of Spinner dolphins. We try to have fun and keep everyone safe on our Hanalei River and Bay paddle. Thanks for sharing. The Humuhumunukunukuapua`a is waiting your return. Micco/Head Guide

Kayak Kauai

Great crew. They did underestimate the difficulty of the kayaking in the ocean to the snorkeling beach. Very tough for some in my group. Otherwise great day. Food OK.

Aloha Larry, We try to be candid in all our tours about the intrinsic effort and matching folks to the right tour. Yesterday, clients on the same tour, felt while they did not need a guide to get to the snorkeling beach off Hideaways, that having the guide(s) made for a richer experience. That said your review helps others choose the correct tour. In spite the toughness…thanks for giving us 4 stars. A hui hou, Micco/Head Guide

Beautiful day out

Our guides Hatu and Justice were wonderful. They made us feel welcome, safe, and gave us a great experience all around. We loved hearing about Hawaiian culture and experienced from Hatu. A great day overall!

Aloha Taylor, Glad you enjoyed the paddling duo of Pohaku and Justice. They do a great job of coupling the beauty of Hanalei with cultural and natural history. Hope you saw some turtles snorkeling. Thanks for sharing and will share with Pohaku and Justice. A hui hou, Micco/Head Guide

If you love to kayak like myself and my wife, this will be a perfect day on vacation! Beautiful blue water, and you get to jump in and snorkel.

Aloha Kara, Perfect day...is good enough for us. Glad we were able to share the beautiful Hanalei, its river and bay on our Hanalei Blue Lagoon tour. Keep active and thanks again for sharing. A hui hou, Micco/Head Guide

River and sea kayak

Very nice one with gorgeous landscape. Our guide was very friendly and provided lots of informations on the history of the Hawaiian civilization as well on the local flora and fauna.

Aloha Chris, Hanalei Bay and environs is definitely "eye candy". Glad you were able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and learned some facts along the way. Thanks for sharing. Until our wakes cross...stay paddling, snorkeling and engaged. A hui hou, Micco Head Guide

Kayak and snorkel

Great views of the river and bay. Our guide Jay was great. Highly recommend.

Aloha KGP, Thanks for your kind and succinct review. Wil share your honorable mention with Jay. Thanks again....keep active and paddling. A hui hou, Micco Head Guide

We had a great time. Jay & Steve were wonderful and took care of all our needs, while educating us about this beautiful island and it's culture. Thanks again guys

Aloha B, Thanks for taking the time to let us know that Jay and Steve continue to do an outstanding job. On all our tours we try to celebrate the beauty of the environment and leave you with some knowledge to ponder. Thanks again and looking forward to hosting you on our other tours. A hui hou, Micco Head Guide

Gorgeous tour with knowledgeable guides!

This was a lovely activity that was enjoyable for the whole family (kinder, teens, parents, and grandparents). The guides were knowledgeable and entertaining throughout the paddle and dealt marvelously with the various experience levels within the group. We will be going again on our next trip to Kauai!

Aloha One, Does not get any better than paddling and snorkeling on the Bay and River of Hanalei. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the guides as well. Looking forward to your return and thanks for taking the time to let us know we are doing a good job: it is appreciated A hui hou, Micco Head Guide

Great kayaking tour, not-so-great snorkeling tour

Kayaking the Hanalei River was magestic! The tour guides were fun and interesting and knowledgable! When we got to the snorkeling place, it seemed like it would be good - lots of reef, but then it was not as good as it seemed. I think the reef was too high in the sense that you could only snorkel around the coral, not above it as I'm used to, so if you don't find the "channel" (there are several false leads/dead-ends) then you may get stuck on top of the coral which means you may have to step on it, which you're not supposed to do! This is particularly challenging with children. The gear was all one-size-fits-no-one really well. I thought there would be children's sized gear so we didn't bother bringing the cheap children's gear that we purchased earlier in the week - I thought the tour would have better gear. All-in-all, we barely snorkeled! But otherwise, the tour was lovely!

Aloha Jams, Thanks for your nice, informative and fair review. Glad the guides, panorama, setting that is Hanalei made up for the disappointing snorkeling. At times depending on weather snorkeling, once in a while can be a “hit or miss”. Glad the guides were stil able to fun you. With small children we encourage folks to bring those cheap snorkeling gear that you mentioned. Stay well and thanks again for taking the time to share. A hui hou, Micco Head Guide

Rain can't stop a good time.

A warm rain fell, off and on during our float up the river, but since we were going to get wet anyhow, it didn't matter. Our guides, Web and Dan, were very attentive and funny. And knowledgeable about what we were seeing along the way. One thing that was different from our expectation, but didn't matter too much, was that since the road past Hanalei is closed indefinitely due to a storm, the guides had to park and load things in different spots than normal, which added to the walk to the beach. I would recommend this trip to anyone who likes fun flatwater kayaking, and great snorkeling on the north coast of Kaua'i.

Aloha Holly, Thanks for your nice review. You were the beneficiary of our "dream team" , i.e. Web and Dan who also guide our all day sea kayak tour along Na Pali coast during the summer. Thanks for warning others that, due to last years flood, has forced us to take a 1/4 mile walk along beautiful Hanale Bay. Sometime in the next few months we are told that the road to the river mouth, where we generally launch, will be open once again.d Thanks again for taking the time to share with others. The Hanalei River and Bay has to be one of the more beautiful places on the planet. A hui hou, Micco

Brought us to a hotel beach

It was wasted money. We drove with the guides 45min to Hanalei. There we walked relatively long along the public beach to the kayaks and started to kayak in the river next corner. Nothing spectacular and you can see everything from the road. After about 1 hour kayaking they brought us to a dead reef in front of a hotel where you can go by yourself as well.

Aloha Thilo, Sorry to hear that our Hanalei Blue Lagoon paddle and snorkel did not meet expectations. Many folks enjoy not only the scenic drive by van up to Hanalei but also the short hike along beautiful Hanalei Bay to the staging area; not to mention the paddle/snorkel and panorama that surrounds magical Hanalei. We are there for folks that choose to rent and go un-guided versus those who want to and maximize their time. Thanks for sharing and Happy Holidays. A hui hou, Micco

Awesome Excursion!!!

We had such an amazing time in Kauai, but one of our favorite events was the Kayak and Snorkel excursion up the Hanalei River Anne snorkeling on the reef. Our guides, Lisa and Steve, did amazing jobs. I’d highly recommend it to anyone!

Mark...usually reply to review in a timely fashion. May have been paddling myself. We are in the summer calms and the snorkeling has been dynamite. We are waiting for your return. Thanks for a nice review. A hui hou, Micco Head Guide

Spectacular adventure!!!

Our daughter bought us this trip for our 30th wedding anniversary. We then added four of our good friends that we came with. Kayaking up and down the river was amazing, and on into the ocean. Our snorkeling adventure was awesome, as we saw a Sea Turtle and beautiful fish! Lunch was delicious too! Lisa and Steve did a great job! We were especially grateful for Lisa sharing her expansive knowledge of nature, surfing, and the Hawaiian culture! She was super accommodating taking pictures and setting up lunch! Many thanks!!!

Excellent Tour Guide

This tour was made awesome by the tour guide. He knew so much and he put us at ease the whole way through.

Great time!

This was one of my husband and I's adventures here in Kauai for our honeymoon! We had a wonderful time and would recommend! Great exercise, tan, and got to see lots of ocean life while snorkeling!

Snorkeled with turtle

This was a great excursion, which required a little grace and patience as it got started (van's battery was dead, had to switch vehicles), but was great overall. Fun to do both river and easy ocean kayaking. At the snorkel beach, we saw plenty of fish and also were treated to swim alongside a turtle. Steve was a great guide too.

Absolutely a perfect experience for us all!

This trip was one of our best yet! We have done several activities in Kauai and this one will be hard to beat. Jessie was our travel guide and he was wonderful. He was full of information about the island, he was easy to talk to and it's easy to see he loves what he does. We are a family of four with two teenage sons and all four of us enjoyed the entire day; that is not always an easy accomplishment! The kayaking was very fun, Hanalei Bay was amazing and the snorkel location was just beautiful. Our lunch on the beach was great and It was one of those memories that will last a life time. Jessie was very professional and made us feel very comfortable every step of the way. I would recommend this adventure to anyone!

Jessie was the BEST tour guide. The ultimate professional and extremely personalable.

What more can we say? Jessie made our kayak tour the most exciting part of our Kaua'i vacation. He's 100% passionate about the island & maintaining it's splendor. Jessie know the island flora & fauna, as well as very interesting tidbits about the history. He is also an excellent kayaker, who remained calm throughout our outing. One of the 3 couples in our party had their kayak turn over and the wife, a non-swimmer panicked. Jessie made sure all were safe with life preservers securely fastened, despite the slight "adventure." This tour is worth doing again, and again. Thanks Jessie!

Great experience

Very nice and relax trip. This is our first kayak experience. The river is clam and beautiful. Snorkeling is good too, many fishes.

Very bad service!

This excursion was fun, but staff at office was very rude. Acted like we were a burden to even help. Very short and snobby. Especially blonde lady. No one even smiled at us. I have never been on an excursion so unorganized and unfriendly. Our guide was nice enough, but no instructions for snorkeling. My sister had never snorkeled and he just gave us our masks and left us to snorkel on our own while he went spear fishing. As we were kayaking he got way ahead and never stopped and checked on the group. I was very disappointed. I have been on several excursions and the staff has always been wonderful, but not this one. I would NOT recommend this company to anyone!!!!!

business trip break

Recently my buddies and I were on business in Hawaii and needed a break from work. We had the day off and decided to try this kayak thing out. It was awesome in every way. A group of guys, we always like to be active and this provided us with the intensity we needed, and the sites were gorgeous and the guide was cool too. Every guy who went agreed with me, this tour was the bomb.

It was fun!

In spite of the downpour of rain the day of our kayak adventure (5/28), it was fun and we all had quite a workout. Our guide, Harley, was excellent in every way. Very informative, patient, skilled, and accommodating! It would have been nice if you had ordered more sunshine but then we would have been sunburned; this way, we were just wet! Thanks again. Barb Langham

great experience

Bucky was an excellent guide.

River Kayaking & Snorkel

This was a really fun experience! Jonathan was our tour guide and since we were the only ones booked that afternoon, it was a really private tour. We snorkeled at Hideaways Beach, which was breathless. The kayaking back was a little tough because we were tired from the snorkeling but we finally made it. I would definitely do it again!

This Kauai kayaking tour is currently unavailable for booking on our site. Please visit our Kauai kayaking tours page for other available tours.

This Blue Lagoon Kauai Kayak tour is a 3.5-4 hour adventure of exploring the Hanalei River, Bay and Estuary!  Enjoy a Kauai kayaking tour for the day!

You'll start this Kauai Kayak tour by paddling down the serene Hanalei River out to the Hanalei bay that offers wide views of Makana Peak (Bali Hai).  You can also see the Namolokama, Mamalahoa, & Hihimanu peaks to the south, which are known for their waterfalls.

Next depending on weather & sea conditions or group dynamics the tour can either paddle west along Hanalei Bay over towards the Wai'oli stream or venture East towards Ani'ni for some snorkeling or surf kayaking off shore.

This tour has it all for the adventurous family!  Sea Turtles and Dolphins, along with many birds, are often seen on this tour.  Enjoy lunch, kayaking, snorkeling, bird watching, beach combing, exploring tide pools and caves.

Please note that during the winter parts of the bay may be off limits due to the high surf advisories that can be made.  If this happens on your tour, the tour will spend more time exploring the upper reaches of the Hanalei River instead.

Check in is at the Wailua River Mouth Location and you can either ride with or follow the tour up to Hanalei.

Fantastic travel company-- well-organized with responsive, polite and accommodating staff. The Northern Lights were an incredible, once in a lifetime experience. The tour guides were fantastic, and the views breathtaking. Highly recommend and will be using this travel company in the future.

This was a perfect way to manage a stopover visit with zero knowledge of iceland going in. The Blue Lagoon was closed during my visit and I was promptly refunded. There were clouds the first night so Northern lights tour was canceled, but the booking was honored the following night and we got clear skies and a stunning multi-hour aurora. I wish I had taken one more day to space things out a little more, but I felt very well taken care of throughout. A special shout out to Troll Expeditions- if I ever come back, I'd likely do all my tours with them. The other companies were very good, but Troll was top notch.

Amazing! I had multi day tour. First day was Reykjavik excursions - big bus, the guy was very old and struggling to remember what he started talking on the first place, didn’t enjoy. But , wow , next days with Hadrian and Troll expeditions were the best! I learned so much about Islandic history, government state and even pop music! She found my lost sunglasses too. Best tour guide ever! Can’t thank her enough for great experience in Iceland!

Overall trip was great - plans well laid out, they quickly made adjustments to our itinerary so we could stay 3 extra days in Reykjavik. All hotels were beautiful, clean, amazing European style breakfasts included. This was my 2nd time visiting Iceland. Highlights - we booked 2 horseback riding tours - one through Guide to Iceland and one on our own. Eldhester through tour was not the best for experienced riders - we walked the pasture lands around but there were around 15 riders and only 4 experienced riders. Super cold, no interesting scenery. We booked our own at Laxnes and it was amazing! Really rode through different terrains, experienced riders and we were able to do all gaits! Highly recommend. Mycar rental agency - great service, we had a Toyota Rav4 and it was in great condition. I highly recommend buying highest level of insurance. I have traveled all over the world and never had a problem but while parked in Reykjavik we came out in the morning to find our car side swiped and pushed into another car. My out of pocket is 350,000 isk (~2600 usd). Sky Lagoon Sky ritual is a must - amazing views and experience!

What is the Blue Lagoon?

Imagine walking through a ghostly lava field that better resembles a science-fiction movie set than anything earthly. The moss-covered, jagged lava creates a moody landscape dotted with mossy greens. Suddenly, you come across a milky cyan blue lagoon steaming with naturally heated water, standing defiant and beautiful in the otherwise black barren landscape. Welcome to the Blue Lagoon.

Icelanders have long utilized the geothermal nature of their island for domestic and industrial use. The Blue Lagoon spa was formed in 1976, quite accidentally, around the Svartsengi geothermal power plant. The run-off water from the power plant is seawater, rich in minerals, and as the water ran through the surrounding lava field, it started to deposit silica, forming mud which effectively plugged the holes in the lava field, creating the lagoon. As the water began to collect, it acquired another of its unique attributes, a particular kind of algae that can sometimes give the water a greenish hue.

By 1981, the first Icelander had braved to bathe in it and not only deemed it pleasant but relieving for his psoriasis.

The lagoon's location next to the airport makes it the perfect stop after arriving or just before departing Iceland, and many airport transfers to Reykjavík, offer a stop at the Blue Lagoon as part of the journey.

If you would rather make a day of it, there are other tours that include a visit to this dream-like place in their itinerary. Why not have a dip in the Blue Lagoon after exploring the famous Golden Circle sightseeing route or after a day of sightseeing in Reykjavík?

WATCH: Paddle Through Glowing Waters During a Bioluminescence Kayak Tour On Florida’s Space Coast

By Space Coast Daily  //  April 8, 2024

Get an up-close view of the Space Coast's glowing lagoons and rivers.

WATCH: Kayaking at night might seem counterintuitive, but on Florida’s Space Coast , it’s a must-do activity for any nature lover. That’s because this wetland-rich region is one of the few places where you can witness aquatic bioluminescence.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA –   Kayaking at night might seem counterintuitive, but on Florida’s Space Coast , it’s a must-do activity for any nature lover. That’s because this wetland-rich region is one of the few places where you can witness aquatic bioluminescence.

The phenomenon, which occurs most consistently during the summer, turns the area’s rivers and lagoons into a glowing paradise. The event is due to a chemical reaction that causes comb jellies (translucent sea creatures) and dinoflagellates (bioluminescent plankton) to emit blue light any time the water is disturbed.

Paddling, or even touching the water with one’s hand, reveals waves of glowing lights, making for a fascinating display. As a result, bio-kayaking tours in the Indian River Lagoon and other nearby waterways have become popular among travelers.

The Indian River Lagoon is a bioluminescent bay on Florida’s Atlantic Coast that hosts more glowing plankton than almost anywhere else in the world. During bioluminescence tours, travelers can also spot dolphins and manatees as they weave through mangroves and create trails of blue light.

blue lagoon kayak tour

Manatees and stingrays swim at a leisurely pace, leading to spectacular views of the phenomenon in slow motion, while speeding schools of mullet create quick flashes, appearing like hundreds of green bottle rockets going off underwater.

The best time of year to see the phenomenon is from May through November, and the effects are brightest after 9 p.m. Visitors should check the lunar calendar before selecting a tour date, as the nights are darkest within five days of a new moon.

When going on a bioluminescence tour, bring natural insect repellent, a change of clothes, and a waterproof bag for your camera or phone. If you’re taking photos, turn off your flash for the best results. And don’t forget to put down your device and enjoy the moment.

Bioluminescent Tours on the Space Coast

Space Coast tour operators gear up for bioluminescence season every year. No matter if you’re paddling a kayak or relaxing on a pontoon,  any tour you take will be the most memorable part of your Space Coast summer vacation.

Knowledgeable operators guide you through various parts of the lagoon to secluded spots known for fish and wildlife activity. As your kayak and the wildlife move through their native habitat, an explosion of activity lights up the water and reveals the magical world just beneath the surface. You’ll never experience something quite like it.

Check tour availability with each operator, and make sure you book your excursion in advance. They often sell out.

Kayak Lagoon Tour

With approximately an hour of kayaking, this is our more intense trip. Perfect if you are looking to get a bit of exercise or have some experience kayaking. However, even beginners can do it – we include a full safety briefing and short paddling introduction class at the start of the tour. It isn’t hard, it just takes teamwork! We’ll depart from Kim Sha beach into the Caribbean ocean before entering the Simpson Bay lagoon through the channel under the bridge. Make sure to get close to the rocks as we go through the channel and we’ll point out the crabs and hopefully and iguana or two. As we paddle through the lagoon we get close-up views of incredible mega yachts docked at the various marinas which dot the coast line of the lagoon (Mega Yacht season is from November to April). After about 30 minutes of kayaking we reach our turn around point – a small area of mangroves where we take a well deserved break as the guides point out interesting creatures like the Upside Down Jellyfish and the strange Sea Cucumbers which thrive in these shallow waters. Keep your eyes open for the Tarpon hunting and the rarely seen Grey and Blue Herons which nest in these quiet havens. Back under the bridge, if weather allows we head to Simpson Bay Beach for a change of scenery and a nice swim to stretch out our muscles before returning back to Kim Sha Beach for a cold drink and good conversation with your guides.
