Welcome to the cape ann harbor tour.

Discover Cape Ann with a self-guided drive along the scenic waterfront! Enjoy the vistas, beaches, and natural beauty of this quintessential New England coastline at your own pace. Visit the famous Fisherman’s Memorial, beautiful Beauport, and the scenic Harborwalk, all while diving into the stories of Massachusetts of days past. The roundtrip tour through Gloucester and Rockport also visits Fort Point, Eastern Point Lighthouse, Bearskin Neck, Halibut Point State Park, and more .

About the Tour

Cruise along the road less traveled on Cape Ann, where adorable villages, stunning beaches, and history dating back hundreds of years come together. On this flexible, app-based tour, you can move at your own pace and stop for photos wherever you’d like!

The tour begins just outside Gloucester, with gorgeous views of the harbor. Here, you’ll find the enormous Tablet Rock, which opens a window to the year 1623, when Pilgrims first landed on these shores. Hear all about their struggles to survive in this harsh new land.

Next, head into Gloucester and dive into the town’s uniquely New England culture. Learn about the importance of fishing to this community, the dangers of that high-stakes profession, and the tragic story behind the Perfect Storm, which still reverberates through this town to this day.

Then, visit Gloucester’s harbor to see why locals simply can’t live anywhere but here. Meander along the gorgeous harborwalk, breathe in the salty sea air, and maybe even spot a few whales!

After that, cruise along with the cape’s artsy southern point and discover the artist colony of Rocky Neck and the spectacular Niles Beach, perfect for catching some sun. Admire the huge, 56-room mansion of Beauport, then snap some iconic Massachusetts photographs of the Eastern Point Lighthouse.

Drive-up the eastern coastline next on your Cape Ann Harbor tour, past plenty of spotless beaches, including the unbelievably picturesque Pebble Beach, which feels like it was practically made for Instagrammable moments! Listen to the tale of Thacher Island just beyond the shore and the shipwreck which put it on the map.

Then, head through Rockport and hear the wild story of Hatchet Hannah and her crusade against alcohol. After picking up on the local history, you’ll get the chance to see the most painted building in the entire world. No, really!

Venture north to the most remote part of the cape, and listen along the way to the harrowing events of the infamous Blizzard of 1978 and another equally terrible storm over a century earlier. Then, stretch your legs in the beautiful Halibut Point State Park, which offers breathtaking ocean views you can’t find just anywhere.

Finally, angle back toward Gloucester, but not without getting the inside scoop on the so-called Witch House and the devastating shipwrecks that have occurred along this cape over the years. This comprehensive, self-guided driving tour will show you everything there is to see on the Cape Ann Harbor tour and fill you in on all the stories you need to hear while you’re at it!

What You'll See

Our Cape Ann excursion begins at the Gloucester Visitor Information Center. We'll get our view breathtaking views of the waterfront from this point.

Walk to Scenic Views

Instead of setting off on our drive right away, we'll first check out the most striking feature of the scenery: the massive Tablet Rock. In 1907, the plaque the rock was unveiled to Commemorate the first settlers in this area.

Tablet Rock at Stage Fort Park

We can also choose to walk around this area before our driving, admiring the amazing views of the park, the ocean, and the city.

Fisherman’s Memorial

Our drive along Cape Ann's scenic harbor begins once we cross the canal. First, we'll admire Cape Ann's most famous momument: the Fisherman's Memorial. As we continue, we'll learn about the significance of fishing in Cape Ann's past — and the famous movie about it, "The Perfect Storm".

Gloucester HarborWalk

Here we can choose to pause again to explore Cape Ann's Harborwalk. Along the path are 41 granite slabs containing pieces of the town’s long, odd, sometimes sad history. These “story moments,” as they are called, were put together by teams of volunteers eager to show the world what Gloucester is made of. Taken together, they form a mosaic of this strange, beautiful place.

Cape Ann Whale Watch

Cape Ann and Glouchester’s whale watching industry guarantees whale sightings with every voyage. Their boats often take passengers to a marine wildlife preserve that’s been called one of the top five whale-watching destinations in the entire world!

Niles Beach

As we drive along scenic Cape Ann's waterfront, we'll discover beaches both big and small. We can choose to stop at one, some, or all, as we learn more about what's unique about each one.

Beauport, also known as Sleeper–McCann House, Little Beauport, or Henry Davis Sleeper House, is a beautiful historic home tucked away on the Cape Ann waterfront. As we drive, we'll dive back into Cape Ann's history.

Eastern Point Lighthouse

During the early 1800s, maritime trade in Gloucester was booming. Ships traveling between these ports and China or India were turning enormous profits, and captains started to become especially anxious at the prospect of losing their extremely valuable cargo in a shipwreck. Enter: lighthouses!

Thacher Island

Thacher Island is a small island off Cape Ann on the Massachusetts coast in the United States. It is a part of the Town of Rockport. It was a place where some naval confrontations, both minor and major, took place, which helped secure a victory for the colonists.

Our scenic drive along Cape Ann now leaves Gloucester and brings us into Rockport. We'll learn more about Rockport and the region as we drive.

Our brings us to "the most painted building in America"!

Bearskin Neck

This land was once home to a large number of bears, but don’t worry! They’re long gone now. According to legend, one such bear was caught by the tide and killed in 1700, which is how this place got its name.

Granite Pier

Granite Pier is one of the Rockport’s oldest piers. As you might have guessed, this used to be where ships would be loaded with granite for transport. As we explore the pier and nearby beaches, we'll get a better understanding of the Cape Ann of days past, and that of the present. Our drive then continues along Halibut Point and Harvey Reservation.

Annisquam Lighthouse

Annisquam Harbor Light Station is a historic lighthouse on Wigwam Point. As we approach, we'll learn more about shipwrecks, shipping, fishing, and maritime trade.

Goose Cove Reservation

Our scenic drive along Cape Ann has finally looped back to Stop 1! We're nearly back at the Gloucester Visitor Information Center.

How many years have you been in business as a solopreneur? Our 11th season is now!

How many years have you been a Chamber Member? 8 years

cape ann tours

Please provide a brief description of what your business is all about. Cape Ann Foodie Tours are walking culinary and cultural tours of Gloucester. Along the way, our guides provide the backdrop to the city with great stories and interesting facts. And there’s lots of food from family-owned business. Our new brand is Cape Ann Land and Sea tours. We are marketing to corporate/company and incentive travel groups. It’s a very exciting time for us.

What enticed you to start a solopreneur business? I had left my corporate meeting and event planning job to come home to Gloucester as a caregiver for my parents. My dad, as well as having a career as a civil engineer, was a history buff who inspired me to do local research, which I find fascinating. I had met an aspiring fireman, P.J. Halloran, and I joined up with him, guiding tours, enjoying the people that I met and being grateful that I had the knowledge and enthusiasm to show them a great time. I took over the business in 2015 when P.J. moved to Somerville, where he’s a lieutenant in the fire department.

What is “the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” of working on your own?

The Good: Meeting wonderful people (note: miserable people don’t go on food tours.) as well as the satisfaction that I can be successful doing something I love.

The Bad: Not getting paid holidays and vacation time. I do miss pay checks. And 401K’s for that matter.

The Ugly : Working alone at home! It’s SO hard. Keeping up with social media, figuring out how to bring in new business, being on the phone. Making up itineraries and subsequent contracts for groups is all consuming and can be complicated; lots of changes and adjustments. Time management is tough. There are days when I look up at the clock and it’s 4:00pm and I haven’t had breakfast or lunch. Just too much coffee! Thank goodness I don’t smoke!

Why are you a Chamber member? The Chamber has been an amazing help to me both personally and professionally. I really love the socialization (go back to the Ugly!) Their special events such as “Business After Hours” and their “Soundings” emails are very informative and keep me up to date on upcoming activities. I also belong to the Tourism Council and enjoy our monthly meetings at the Chamber.

What advice would you give others looking to take the leap into “solopreneurship?” Reach out! You can’t do it alone. Find the people who will support and advise you. Don’t isolate; it’s important to ask for help.

Where do you see your business going in the future? As the tourism scene grows here on Cape Ann, I see people gravitating towards experiences. According to AAA, of the people who travel, and value time shared with family/friends, 36% choose to go on food tours. I’d like to think that by starting the food tour concept here on Cape Ann, future visitors – and locals – will enjoy trying new eateries and leave with more knowledge of our history and our culture. My business is expanding and we’re creating new tours and bringing more partners on board. My vision is for as many people as possible – owners of restaurants, attractions, as well as individual artists, writers, and musicians – will benefit from the service Cape Ann Foodie Tours provides. I believe that relationships are key in life and in business. I’d like to provide lots more people with a service that makes them happy! And, of course, it’s fun-filling.

*********************************

For consideration to have your solopreneur business profiled, please fill out the form at https://form.jotform.com/240133772746053 . After your form is received and we confirm that you are a Chamber member in good standing and your business meets the criteria of a solopreneur , we will send a detailed interview questionnaire for timely completion.

CCurtis 22 Gallery

Cape Ann Artisans began in 1980, formed by men and women in Gloucester and Rockport who were interested in connecting with others living the life of the professional craftsperson. In a time without internet connection or credit cards, the founding members created a supportive network to survive and to thrive, to grow their businesses and their artistic visions.  We became friends, shared food and knowledge, created shows, opened stores, and opened our studios.

The Annual Studio Tour is one of our best ideas, and remains a favorite of our friends, community, and visitors to Cape Ann. We welcome you to our studios and our works!

Artisan Membership Application  Contact [email protected] , but read this first:

After our October Tour weekend we begin the process of considering new members for the following year. Members are asked to make a yearly commitment to share the expenses, the year round organizational and publicity work, and to have their studios open and available for BOTH the June and the October tour dates.

The membership jury process includes submitting examples of current work, photos of your studio, an artist statement and/or resume. We arrange for an Artisan group to visit your studio as part of this process. We also ask that applicants have established their working studio on Cape Ann for at least 1 full year before joining. We expect that the work submitted is only your own personal design and production, and that the work that is displayed and can be sold in your studio during the Annual Tour dates is only your own work.

Deadline: Applications must be submitted by October 15th  for membership consideration for the following year. Contact [email protected] for the submission address and jurying schedule. Download Membership Application (PDF) Download CAA Bylaws (PDF)
