Cars with Adaptive Cruise Control: Everything You Need to Know
Cars with adaptive cruise control used to be considered a luxury only featured in state-of-the-art vehicles. Still, with technological advancements, adaptive cruise control is now a common feature found in many different car models.
Cars with adaptive cruise control used to be considered a luxury only featured in state-of-the-art vehicles. Still, with technological advancements, adaptive cruise control is now a common feature found in many different car models. Autobytel says this means ACC is now accessible to everyone, and even if your current vehicle doesn't have ACC, you can always have it installed.
What Does Adaptive Cruise Control Do?
Adaptive cruise control uses advanced sensory technology to determine your car's speed in proximity to other vehicles or objects on or around the roadway. It applies moderate brakes and warning signals when a driver is getting to close to another car. Drivers can set the speed limit on the ACC so that they don't exceed the speed limit, but when the sensory technology detects traffic or other unsafe conditions, it reduces the driver's speed to adapt to them.
The Best Cars With Adaptive Cruise Control
1. 2020 bmw 3 series.
This brand new model offers the best combination of sensory technology . It uses cameras in addition to ultrasonic and radar sensors to pull data about the environment surrounding the vehicle. In addition to its sensory features, it also has a "stop-and-go" brake feature, great for commuters who spend extended amounts of time in stand-still traffic as it alleviates the stress on the driver's legs and feet. What's more, the camera sensor can pick up traffic signs such as speed limit signs and reduce or increase speed to match the recommended rate of speed.
2. 2020 Volvo S60
This new model by Volvo has a "Pilot Assist" feature, which makes driving safe and easy. What this feature does is it helps the driver maintain the proper speed with neighboring vehicles, and it also provides steering assistance along with automatic braking or accelerating for situations such as stop-and-go to free-flowing traffic. Another great aspect of this model is that it doesn't rely on a lead car to determine speed and spacing, so you can use it even when you aren't near another car.
3. 2020 Hyundai Sonata
This new Hyundai model has the same technological systems as other Hyundai models, called "SmartSense advanced driving assistance systems." The 2020 Hyundai Sonata includes SmartSense features such as five cameras, three radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors to help with things such as advanced cruise control, stop-and-go feature, warning signals, and automatic braking or accelerating.
4. 2020 Nissan Altima
The 2020 Nissan Altima features Nissan's "ProPilot Assist" system, which uses advanced technology to help drivers practice safe driving. It allows drivers with automatic acceleration and braking for speed and distance control, while it also uses automatic steering to help them maintain lane control. These helpful features are made possible by its front-facing cameras, sensors, radar, and electronic control module.
5. 2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback
This new model provides drivers with an adaptive cruise control system, specifically designed for highway travel. Its cruise control features include cameras within the car and radar sensors on the front grille that can gauge your car's proximity and speed when compared to other vehicles around you. Similarly, these sensors help determine the rate of speed of the vehicle in front of you and automatically decrease your speed if the vehicle in front of you slows down.
The Cheapest Cars With Adaptive Cruise Control
According to U.S.News, here are some examples of the cheapest cars you can buy that still have adaptive cruise control features:
1. 2019 Kia Soul
You can get Kia's "smart cruise control" feature as part of their "Primo Package." This add-on is around $4,500 in addition to the original selling-price. You can save energy with its automatic braking system, and also keep a safe following distance thanks to its forward-collision warning feature. In addition to these safety features, the Kia Soul also provides drivers with a heated steering wheel, and in-depth seat adjustments to meet more complex needs for your body type.
2. 2018 Mazda 3
The 2018 Mazda 3 provides drivers with an adaptive cruise control system that detects rear-cross traffic and blind-spot monitoring, great for making safe lane changes. It also offers a "premium equipment package" for just $1,600 in addition to the original selling price. This package gives your vehicle advanced safety features and other add-ons such as a heated steering wheel and a built-in navigation system.
3. 2018 Hyundai Sonata
The 2018 Hyundai Sonata offers buyers the "technology package" for just $1,000. Included in this package are adaptive cruise control to help drivers maintain a safe following distance and adequate speed. This model also comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
4. 2018 Toyota Rav4
This 2018 Toyota Rav4 SUV includes an adaptive cruise control system for a fee that increases the original selling price to just above $25,000. When you turn your ACC feature on, it uses its radar sensors to administer collision warnings, automatic braking, and acceleration to make sure that your vehicle moves at a safe pace and maintains an appropriate following distance from other vehicles on the roadway at all times.
The 2018 Toyota Rav4's adaptive cruise control system is categorized as "standard equipment" in Toyota's "Safety Sense P suite of technology," Making it a high-tech safety vehicle for a reasonable price point.
5. 2018 Honda Accord
The 2018 Honda Accord features a state-of-the-art adaptive cruise control system called the "Honda Sensing System." This system offers not only adaptive cruise control but also several other useful safety features, including automatic braking for collision prevention and traffic sign recognition.
These features are powered by camera sensing technology that can read traffic signs such as speed limit markers and adjust the Accord's speed to fit those speed requirements. You can get even more safety features by upgrading to higher-trims.
As adaptive cruise control becomes more readily available, you can find cheap and affordable car models that include much of the same technology as modern luxury cars.

Top five least expensive new hybrid cars in South Africa
Ready to switch to a hybrid lifestyle? Hybrid cars are becoming more affordable as manufacturers push towards greener motoring. Check out our top 5 list of affordable hybrid cars in South Africa.
More and more hybrid cars are joining the fray in South Africa, and here is our list of the five most affordable ones. (Please note that we didn't include the cars with mild-hybrid systems like the new top-spec Suzuki Grand Vitara.)
If you want to spend money on a new hybrid that will save you fuel like crazy, these fit the bill:
1. Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 Hybrid XS, R486 100
The petrol-electric Toyota Corolla Cross, first introduced in SA in 2021, offers a total of 90 kW from its 1.8-litre powerplant and electric motor and power is driven via a CVT gearbox. The Corolla Cross may be a compact SUV, but it has an above-average-sized boot of 440 litres, along with impressive legroom on the rear bench and all the safety features and creature comforts that modern families need. ( Did you know that a hybrid-powered Hilux and Fortuner are destined for SA? )
2. Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 Hybrid XR, R527 200
XR models have everything the XS models do but add a few extras, such as Toyota Safety Sense, which comprises:
- Adaptive Cruise Control,
- Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM)
- Lane Trace Assist (LTA)
- Pre-Collision System (PCS)
The XR also has seven airbags compared to the XS model's five, and R18 wheels instead of the R17s on the XS. Other extras in the XR include electric seat adjustment, high beam assist, and an auto-dimming interior mirror.

3. toyota corolla hatch 1.8 hybrid xs, r531 200.
This new-generation Corolla hybrid model, which was released towards the end of 2022, also has a 1.8-litre petrol engine combined with an electric motor, offering 103 kW from both systems. A newly created, lighter 18.1 kW lithium-ion battery also supports the hybrid system.
Toyota claims 3.5 litres / 100 km for the Corolla Hybrid hatchback, and this is very achievable. Our testing returned 4.8 litres, but we were not attempting to save fuel at all. If you consider that low-speed driving is very common in rush hour traffic and city streets, you’re likely to save a substantial amount of fuel over the lifespan of the vehicle. - Lawrence Minnie
Here are 8 features that set the Toyota Corolla hatch 1.8 Hybrid XR apart from its competitors.
4. Toyota Corolla 1.8 Hybrid XS sedan, R543 900
The Toyota Corolla Hybrid sedan now features the same improved powertrain specifications as the Corolla hybrid hatchback (ie. 103 kW combined) and a massive cargo area if you need vast amounts of space. Martin Pretorius had the previous 90kW model on test; you can read his review here:
Toyota Corolla Hybrid review: A real-world economy champion
5. honda fit hybrid e.hev, r544 900.
The Honda Fit hybrid is equipped with Honda's 1.5-litre MMD e-CVT hybrid system for a decent amount of pulling power and low fuel consumption. Thanks to the versatile Magic Seat system, the Honda Fit hybrid, as with all Honda Fit and previous Jazz models, makes excellent cars for those with little ones. ( Which is better, petrol or hybrid? Find out here .)
The Fit Hybrid features the latest in safety features, such as collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, road departure mitigation, and automatic high-beam headlamps. It's not cheap but beautifully designed and solidly built, and it comes with minimalistic Japanese flair.
Interested in the non-hybrid version of the Fit? I had the 1.5 Executive CVT on the test beginning of December 2021. Read my review here:
Honda Fit 1.5 Executive CVT Review: Fit for a king?
Who just missed the top 5 list.
The Haval Jolion narrowly misses the Top 5 list with a price of R549,950. See below:
5. Haval Jolion 1.5 HEV Luxury, R549 950
The Haval Jolion HEV joined the hybrid lineup in January 2023. My colleague, Taye Mbiri, had the Jolion hybrid on test. Here's what he had to say about it:
The HEV utilises a self-charging hybrid system. You have a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor in front with a supporting battery pack in the rear. The transmission on offer here is Haval's Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) which combines the outputs from the combustion engine and electric power and sends it all to the front wheels. In action, the transmission feels like a CVT. The total output is 140kW of power and 375Nm of torque. How does it feel? When driving gently and cruising about in town, the HEV is smooth and responsive with seamless changeovers from electric to petrol power depending on the speed and amount of power needed in a particular situation. The HEV provided impressive performance when you put your foot down. I found that the power and torque caught me off guard a few times during my tenure.

POWERFUL PERFORMANCE
REVOLUTIONARY FEATURES
Intelligent & adaptive cruise control.
Cruise control is not a new feature in vehicles of today, but the Proton Intelligent Cruise Control system takes it to a whole other level.
The Proton Intelligent Cruise Control system ensures you and your passengers are always comfortable driving within the speed limit and at a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you. As an added feature, the Intelligent Cruise Control system also provides you with steering assistance while you drive to keep your Proton car in the center of the lane.
The Adaptive Cruise Control system allows your Proton to slow down and speed up, depending on what the traffic ahead of you is doing, even in stop and go traffic, while never going above your pre-set cruise control speed limit. Now that is intelligent driving.
Auto Park Assist
Everyone dislikes trying to find a parking that you can squeeze your car into, and nobody enjoys parallel parking. Now you can take the stress out of parking with the Proton Auto Park Assist Feature. By simply pressing the Auto Park Assist button, your Proton car will take the hassle out of parking for you by parking itself. Your Proton will scan for a suitable parking in the area you are in and notify you once it has located the ideal spot. If you want to take over and park your vehicle yourself you can, or you can then take your hands off the wheel, sit back, relax, and let your Proton car intelligently and conveniently park itself. The Proton self-parking system means you’ll never have to worry about scratching your car while parking again.
Blind Spot Information System
There are so many vehicles on the roads, it’s easy to miss them or only see them at the last minute when they’re driving in your blind spot. Thankfully your Proton car can assist you in finding and ‘seeing’ these vehicles around you on the road with the Blind Spot Information System. Using the vehicle sensors, your Proton will detect when there are vehicles in your blind spot and notify you, so you don’t get a fright or worse, end up in an accident. Now you and your passengers can enjoy a peaceful, safe journey knowing that your Proton is keeping an eye on the vehicles you can’t see, so you can focus on what’s ahead.
REASSURED SAFETY
REFINED CONNECTIVITY
Autonomous Emergency Braking & Forward Collision Warning
Accidents can happen and sometimes, we can see it coming, but our reaction time just isn’t quick enough to avoid them. Thankfully Proton Cars have an integrated driving technology so that your vehicle does all it can to keep you safe. With the Autonomous Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning system, your Proton will alert you and apply the brakes automatically when a potential upcoming, or frontal collision is detected. If you’re slow to react then your Proton car will react for you to keep you and your passengers safe. You can now enjoy driving with the confidence that your Proton is looking after you in the moments when human error catches you unawares.
Voice Command
Talking to our vehicles and it talking back seemed like something far in the future or out of movies, but that future is now here. You can now talk to your Proton car and give it voice commands to control different features in your vehicle by simply saying “Hi PROTON”. This fun feature means you don’t have to take your hands off the wheel, or your eyes off the road and get distracted trying to click buttons in your car. With ease, you can control features such as opening and closing your windows, changing the temperature or fan speed of your air-conditioning, asking your Proton car to turn up the volume or play your favorite song, open the sunroof to let the air flow through your hair, and so much more. It’s time to greet the next chapter in automotive technology, all you need to do is say “Hi PROTON”.
Smartphone Connectivity
Your Proton car Infotainment system can do so much more than just play music. Unlock a world of possibilities when you connect and mirror your smartphone to your Proton Car via Bluetooth or the Proton QD Link. The limits of what you can do is only limited by your phone’s abilities. Whether you’re stuck in traffic and using your phone’s GPS to find the quickest route to your destination or listening to music while enjoying a leisurely drive with the family, your Proton does it all. Enjoy an easy-to-use infotainment experience while you drive that you can tailor to you or your passenger’s needs. The future of automotive technology is here and it’s ready for you to connect and start experiencing.

Overview of the Toyota Prado 2024
The 2024 Toyota Prado has arrived, setting new benchmarks in the 4×4 sector with its evolved aesthetics and enhanced capabilities, reflecting Toyota’s esteemed tradition in robust off-road vehicles.
Design Direction
The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2024 edition reveals an ambitious design direction, featuring a retro-inspired exterior that pays homage to its predecessors while embracing modernity. It is underpinned by a new platform shared with the Land Cruiser 300, making it more robust and offering improved frame rigidity. With its ‘radically refined’ suspension and advanced wheel articulation, the Prado promises to deliver significant enhancements in both on-road and off-road performance. A first look at the next-generation Toyota Prado in South Africa reveals key elements of its updated styling.
Toyota’s Brand Heritage
Toyota carries a rich legacy of producing durable and reliable vehicles, and the Land Cruiser lineage, including the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, is a testament to the brand’s heritage. The latest Prado is set to continue this tradition, embodying decades of engineering expertise and off-road pedigree. Emphasizing Toyota’s commitment to innovation and quality, the 2024 Prado integrates seamlessly into the Land Cruiser family, offering state-of-the-art technology and a luxury experience, indicative of the marque’s evolution. Toyota’s unveiling of the next-generation Land Cruiser Prado highlights the SUV’s readiness to retain its global popularity.
Exterior Highlights
The front bumper elements like the grille, headlights, and the new interchangeable bumper corners have been raised to minimise damage in rough driving conditions.
Grey and black Toyota lettered grille keeps the Lands Cruiser heritage alive.
Front bumper corners are interchangeable so that one could easily replace them after rough off-road explorations.
The centre of the bonnet has been lowered to improve driver visibility, assisting in accurate judgement of the vehicle’s front dimensions and also giving the driver a clearer view of the road surface.
Headlights come in three types, all LED with daytime running lights.

Powertrain Improvements
Brand new TNGA ladder powertrain supports the new Prado.
It also receives a new 8-speed automatic transmission with closer gear ratios for a smooth rhythmic driving experience.
The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) has been replaced with the superior Stabiliser Disconnecting Mechanism (SDM), which provides the same functionality as KDSS, but with a 10% improvement on wheel articulation and overall vehicle maneuverability..
The new Multi Terrain Select system adjusts the drive force, steering system, and the hydraulic brake control system to enhance controllability and ground covering performance on rough roads.

Comfort and Convenience
Luxury meets function inside the Prado’s cabin, where a moonroof offers sweeping skyward views and a cooler box adds a touch of indulgence to long journeys. Multi-Terrain Select further enhances the driving experience, allowing drivers to tailor vehicle performance to varying off-road conditions, ensuring comfort no matter the terrain.
Interior and Exterior Design
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado impresses with a harmonious blend of function and form, radiating a modern aesthetic on the outside and providing a luxury-focused and ergonomic experience on the inside. This section explores the design elements that define the new Prado’s interior and exterior, focusing on its luxurious layout, space utilisation, and distinctive style.
Modern Exterior Aesthetics
The exterior of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado showcases a bold evolution in design direction. Its grille, larger and more pronounced than before, anchors the vehicle’s robust front facade. The overall styling is a mixture of muscular contours and refined lines, projecting a rugged yet sophisticated silhouette. It’s evident that the Prado has been crafted with an eye for detail, from its striking LED headlamps to the carefully chiselled wheel arches.
Luxury-Focused Interior Layout
Stepping inside the Prado, occupants are greeted with a luxury-focused interior that marries style with practicality. Dual digital screens dominate the dashboard, with one serving as the instrument cluster and the other as the multimedia system. The layout of switches and controls is intuitive, grouping basic functions together for ease of use. Attention to detail is apparent, with high-quality materials and finishes adorning every surface.
Ergonomics and Space Utilisation
Ergonomics play a pivotal role in the Prado’s interior design. Seats are crafted for comfort and support during long journeys, and the vehicle features ample head and legroom for all occupants. Climate control ensures a pleasant cabin atmosphere in varying conditions. Moreover, the Prado’s increased dimensions have allowed for clever space utilisation, providing a spacious and flexible cargo area to accommodate different needs.
Market Considerations and Availability
When it comes to the Toyota Prado , prospective buyers and enthusiasts will evaluate several aspects that define its market position, including its pricing strategy, available warranty and service plans, as well as its availability both globally and locally in markets like South Africa.
Pricing Strategy
The Toyota Prado 2024 model is positioned as a premium 7-seat luxury off-roader. For the South African market, pricing details have been keenly anticipated. Initial indications suggest that the vehicle will follow a competitive pricing strategy, falling in line with the previous iteration, which ranged from approximately R1.1 million to R1.4 million . As the launch in South Africa nears, finalised prices will provide a more complete picture of its positioning against rivals in the segment.
Warranty and Service Plans
Toyota is renowned for offering comprehensive warranty and service plans , which certainly aide in the overall value proposition of their vehicles. Buyers of the new Prado can expect robust support from Toyota South Africa, aligning with their global standards for customer care. The specifics of these plans remain to be officially detailed, but they typically cover an array of maintenance requirements, ensuring peace of mind for Toyota owners.
Global and Local Markets
Globally, the Toyota Prado has a strong foothold in markets such as Japan and Europe , attributed to its reliability and competent off-road capabilities. The upcoming 2024 model is expected to uphold this reputation, supporting its market presence across diverse regions. Locally, in South Africa, the anticipation for the all-new Land Cruiser Prado reflects a committed consumer base eager to experience the latest in Toyota’s off-road engineering. Availability in South African showrooms is slated for the second quarter of 2024, positioning Toyota South Africa to capitalise on the enduring popularity of the Land Cruiser range.

NCAP puts 10 adaptive cruise control systems to the test
Semi-autonomous driving has to date been available in many cars, predominately in the form of adaptive cruise control. Since its inception, this advanced form of a traditional cruise control system has steadily improved. And now Euro NCAP and Global NCAP have begun to work on testing these systems in order to inform consumers on what is, and what is not, possible once an adaptive cruise control system is engaged.
Through an investigation conducted by Euro NCAP, Global NCAP and Thatcham research, it was revealed that 70 percent of current drivers believed it possible to already own a fully autonomous. They are, of course, wrong.
In a bid to better inform road users, the two NCAP organisations have focused their attention on autonomous technology testing using ten modern vehicles: the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, DS7 Crossback, Ford Focus, Hyundai Nexo, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S, Toyota Corolla and Volvo V60. Here adaptive cruise control, lane keeping technologies and speed assist systems received close scrutiny.
The results showed the adaptive cruise control system in the DS and BMW offered low levels of assistance (asking the most of the driver), where others offered a better balance between car and driver assistance. The Tesla’s system was less inclined to trust its driver.
All system tested fared relatively poorly in terms of collision avoidance, particularly when it came to relying heavily on interventions from the driver.
It stands to reason that for the foreseeable future a driver will still be required to pay full attention to his/her surroundings while behind the wheel, using any and all modern driving aids as supplementary tools towards arriving safely at their destination.

IQ.DRIVE stands for all the intelligent driver assistance systems found in Volkswagen vehicles. It encompasses all of the impressive technologies already found in today’s Volkswagen for everyday situations such as parking (Park Assist) or lane changing (Lane Assist) and help prevent accidents (Front Assist with City Emergency Brake function as well as the future technologies that will steer us to autonomous driving.
The road to autonomous driving has been defined by the global automotive industry as having 5 levels:
Level 0: Drive only
At level 0, the vehicle only informs the driver and it is up to the driver to take corrective measures. The vehicle cannot automatically take any action such as applying brakes or turning the wheels.
Examples of level zero technologies are Side assist and Blind spot monitoring , Park Distance control, Dynamic light assist , rear view and area view.
Level 1: Assisted Driver
Level 1 is where the vehicle starts to automatically help the driver, but the driver can easily override or control the intervention by pressing the brake, turning the steering wheel or pressing the accelerator. At this level, the vehicle can intervene vertically OR laterally i.e. it can only assist in a linear fashion.
This level includes technologies such as Adaptive cruise control , Lane Assist , Park Assist , Trailer assist, manoeuvre breaking , rear traffic alert, Front Assist/ emergency braking and Traffic Assist.
Level 2: Partial Automation
Level 2 is the beginning of the technologies taking automatic control of the vehicle and being able to guide the vehicle in longitudinal and lateral corrective actions. Remote control Park Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist and Intelligent Park Assist all fall into this level.
Click here to find out more about our other innovations
Level 3: Conditional Automation
Level 3 allows the driver to hand over control of the vehicle for a short period of time and includes technologies like Traffic Jam Pilot and Highway Pilot 1.0 and 2.0.
Level 4: High Automation
At level 4 the driver transfers full control to the vehicle under certain conditions. It is at this level that the driver might not even need to be present in the vehicle. Ideas at this level include autonomous features for specialised parking garages and Highway Pilot 3.0
Level 5: Fully Autonomous
Level 5 is what we see in futuristic movies – a driver is no longer required and the vehicle is in complete control of the entire journey. Level 5 would also need all vehicles to be communicating with all other vehicles, and our roads would effectively be a single digital ecosystem.

Adaptive cruise control *
An adaptive cruise control can provide a more relaxing driving experience on long journeys on motorways and long straight main roads in smooth traffic flows.
The driver selects the desired speed and a time interval to the vehicle ahead. If the camera and radar unit detects a slower vehicle in front of the car, the speed is adapted automatically via the preset time interval to the vehicle ahead. When the road is clear again the car returns to the selected speed.
- regulate the speed smoothly. In situations that demand sudden braking the driver must brake himself/herself. This applies in cases of large speed differences or if the vehicle in front brakes suddenly. Due to the limitations of the radar unit, braking may come unexpectedly or not at all.
- follow the vehicle ahead in the same lane at a time interval set by the driver. If the radar unit cannot see any vehicle in front then the car will instead maintain the speed stored by the driver. This also takes place if the speed of the vehicle ahead increases and exceeds the stored speed.
Steep roads and/or heavy load
Bear in mind that the adaptive cruise control is primarily intended for use when driving on level road surfaces. The function may have difficulty in keeping the correct distance from the vehicle ahead when driving on steep downhill slopes – in which case, be extra attentive and ready to brake.
Do not use adaptive cruise control if the car has a heavy load or a trailer is connected to the car.
- This is not a collision avoidance system. The driver is always responsible and must intervene if the system does not detect a vehicle ahead.
- The function does not brake consistently for humans or animals, and neither for small vehicles such as bicycles and motorcycles. Nor for low trailers, oncoming, slow or stationary vehicles and objects.
- Do not use the function in demanding situations, such as in city traffic, at junctions, on slippery surfaces, with a lot of water or slush on the road, in heavy rain/snow, in poor visibility, on winding roads or on slip roads.
- The function is supplementary driver support intended to facilitate driving and make it safer – it cannot handle all situations in all traffic, weather and road conditions.
- The driver is advised to read all sections in the Owner's Manual that relate to this function to learn about factors such as its limitations and what the driver should be aware of before using the system.
- Driver support functions are not a substitute for the driver's attention and judgement. The driver is always responsible for ensuring the car is driven in a safe manner, at the appropriate speed, with an appropriate distance to other vehicles, and in accordance with current traffic rules and regulations.

Pros and Cons of Driving on Cruise Control
- Monday, June 14th, 2021
What are the advantages of cruise control?
South Africans are big fans of taking a great road trip. Gauteng folks love their long drives to seaside resorts come December — whether Durban or Cape Town — plus there’s the Garden Route and even the magnificent Drakensberg, perfectly positioned between KZN and Gauteng for all to enjoy. So the open road calls no matter where you’re based and, let’s be honest, when you have a Subaru, any excuse to spend as much time in your car as possible is something we can all agree on!
It’s during those long stretches between rest-stops that you’re going to get the best enjoyment from cruise control which allows you to set the speed you’re travelling at without having to keep your foot on the accelerator. By activating cruise control, you’re able to give your right leg a break, avoid speeding fines and ensure you stick to a smooth flow within the traffic on the freeway. And while we highlight the joy of those long trips, cruise control is certainly not exclusive to those situations; any time you’re using highways or driving on a stretch of road where you’d prefer to set one constant speed, cruise control is just perfect and a perfectly safe option (specifically in a Subaru!).
To get started:
- Turn the cruise control system on
- Set the cruising speed
- Use the controls to increase, decrease or cancel the cruise control while driving
- Cancel cruise control at any time by pressing the brake pedal
While standard cruise control is best used on the open road, Subaru has got your traffic concerns covered with Adaptive Cruise Control too.
What does Adaptive Cruise Control do?
Befitting Subaru’s reputation for technological innovation, Adaptive Cruise Control is a game-changer for long trips and uses the EyeSight® system to maintain a set distance from the vehicle in front of you on the road.
Cruise control is not unique to the Subaru brand, so while taking a look at the pros and cons of cruise control, let’s do so first with a broad overview of using this innovative tech in general.
Cruise control advantages and disadvantages:
Top three pros:
- Good Fuel Economy
- Better Driving Comfort
- Avoid Speeding
Cruise Control Disadvantages
What are the disadvantages of cruise control?
Top four cons:
- Bad for Tired Drivers
- Harder to Slow Down Quickly
- Harder to Drive in Bad Weather
- Easier to Get Distracted
It wouldn’t be fair to ignore these cons in the general context of using cruise control, though we at Subaru have moved the goalposts when it comes to safety which humbly renders these cons pretty abstract as far as owning a Subaru goes. The innovative technologies we’ve curated are focussed on ensuring the safest drive possible.
You see, our Pre-Collision Braking System provides automatic braking when EyeSight detects a potential frontal impact. The Pre-Collision Braking System provides automatic braking to help avoid or reduce the severity of detected frontal accident impacts. Should the driver be distracted or not register the risk of a collision, braking will be automatically applied when it is recognised by EyeSight.
Furthermore, Pre-Collision Throttle Management reduces available acceleration in situations where the system detects objects in front of the vehicle that the vehicle is likely to hit. The engine output is restricted to reduce possible impact force and frontal impact damage, and to help prevent injury should the driver mistakenly accelerate.
When it comes to Adaptive Cruise Control, Subaru maintains the speed set by the driver, but also regulates the vehicle’s speed in order to maintain a set distance from the car in front of it. The driver can select from three different distances, based on time and speed, and then the EyeSight Driver Assist System will automatically use braking and monitoring technologies to regulate the vehicle’s speed, in line with the traffic flow.
What’s the best way to really understand cruise control and how Suabru has ticked the boxes for all the safety aspects that go with it? Take one for a test drive of course!

How Things Work: Cruise Control [VIDEO]
If you can’t watch the video, you can read the video transcription below: Edited for clarity and readability
Welcome to Let's Talk Automotive . And in this week's episode on How Things Work, we're going to be taking you through the basic mechanisms of how cruise control works. And we're also going to talk about how adaptive cruise control works. So in basic terms, what we have is a closed-loop system in terms of software in older models. Where we still had a cable-driven system between our accelerator and the throttle body, we used to have an actuator that would obviously regulate the movement of that cable and accelerate or decelerate the vehicle accordingly. Those systems didn't regulate brakes whatsoever. It was simply regulating the speed that we set. Obviously, these days with the way that the technology’s marched on with vehicles, we have control units, we have sensors all over the vehicles, and we have software to drive the system.
Having a look at just the cruise control system the advantage of having cruise control is twofold. First of all, we reduce fatigue for the driver on long-distance trips. And the second advantage is that we in fact have some fuel savings if we've activated our cruise control system. So how does it work? Well, first of all, we set the speed on our multifunction steering wheel, for example, or there are other control mechanisms, depending on what make and model of vehicle you have. But nonetheless, we set the speed and then the control unit will make constant comparisons between the speed that we've set, and the actual speed that is being measured by the speed sensors. And as soon as the system detects that the vehicle is either going too fast or too slow relative to our set speed it'll then make adjustments on the throttle to either increase or decrease the speed.
Now, the second iteration of cruise control is adaptive cruise control. And this is where things get very, very technologically advanced because here, we now have radar and laser systems or a combination of the two that are physically monitoring the distance that we sit between ourselves and a vehicle in front of us. Now in earlier systems, we were limited in terms of functionality of this, with respect to our speed, so it only worked above 60 kilometres an hour and potentially up to only 180 kilometres an hour. But modern adaptive cruise control systems work from zero kilometres an hour all the way up to the top speed of the vehicle. And this introduces a very cool function with adaptive cruise control and that's our city driving function. So now if you're in peak hour traffic, you literally only have to steer the vehicle; the car itself will sort out acceleration and braking right down to a full stop.
So it makes this heavy traffic scenario much more convenient and once again, less tiring. So the way it works is very similar in terms of how basic cruise control works. So in addition to setting a speed, we also set a distance between ourselves and the vehicle in front of us. Now, the radar is going to constantly measure the distance that we've set with the actual conditions. And if, for whatever reason, we either get too close to a vehicle that's in front of us or too far away from a vehicle in front of us, just like the system adjusted the speed on this side, it's also going to make adjustments that will either increase or decrease speed to close the gap or increase the gap. What it will never do, is increase speed beyond what we've set in any case, in terms of a speed limit.
Now we do get questions from time to time from viewers who ask about the safety of using cruise control systems for a number of scenarios. The first is, what happens if I lose control over the vehicle, and the most common question around that is what happens if it's raining and my vehicle starts to aquaplane? Now we do see, unfortunately on Facebook and other social media avenues where these posts are put in place, where they reference some captain in the U.S, some police captain who says that the majority of accidents that they witness in wet weather conditions, the drivers have had their cruise control activated, and it's caused the vehicle to aquaplane, and because they had cruise control on, they lost control of the vehicle. Now that couldn't be further from the truth, because the reality is, that between all of our different systems, as soon as the wheels lose traction, the control unit will simply deactivate cruise control in its entirety and return full control back to the driver. So there are no circumstances under which cruise control will continue working as soon as the vehicle loses control, either from a traction point of view or from a skid point of view. So we hope that that settles that, and you're more comfortable in terms of actually using the fantastic functionality of cruise control and adaptive cruise control.
So we hope you found that useful, and we look forward to seeing you on future episodes on How Things Work.

Top Safety Tech for a Low Price
Once exclusive to the industry’s most expensive vehicles, driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control (ACC) have trickled down to the point of standard issuance on some of the most affordable cars for sale. In a market where safety is often a central selling point, manufacturers must boost the availability of the best safety features to maintain a competitive edge. As such, buyers on a budget now have a rich selection of affordable cars to choose from that either come standard with or offer ACC as an option.
Adaptive cruise control builds on the basic cruise control technology that has been around for decades, by using sensors and modern computing to modulate your car’s speed while accounting for the speed of the car ahead of you. While you still set a speed as normal, your car can slow down and speed up to maintain distance between you and that car. Some systems can even slow your car to a stop and get you moving again – a feature that’s highly appealing to drivers who spend a lot of time in bumper-to-bumper traffic on congested highways.
To highlight the spread of this innovative tech, we’ve compiled a list of 23 cars and suvs that cost less than $25,000 when equipped with adaptive cruise control. We’ll spell out which trim or options package you need to choose to equip your new car with this feature, and how much you’ll need to pay.
The U.S. News Best Cars team regularly updates our reviews with the latest data, so the scores you see here may vary slightly from the content you see elsewhere on our site.
