Second Year Experience

case western reserve dorm tour

The Second-Year Experience (SYE) residential communities provide students with an environment to explore new or deepen avenues for career and personal plans as they define a personal vision for their undergraduate career.

Second-year residents live primarily in suite-style arrangements, with rooms around a living room and bathroom, allowing each student to live with a smaller group of friends. Each student belongs to one of three smaller residential communities: Carlton Road, SYE-North, or Murray Hill.

Carlton Road Residential Community

Community Buildings: Glaser House, Kusch House, Michelson House

Physical Space & Amenities: The community is located on the south side of campus. The community is considered suite-style because six students live in single rooms and share a bathroom. Each building has a kitchen, a laundry room with free services and online monitoring system, a bike room, and lounge spaces with game tables, and vending machines.

Carlton Road is informally known as “Top of the Hill.” due to it’s elevated positioning on campus. To reach this destination, students generally utilized the “Elephant Stairs” which connects the Carlton Road community with the Murray Hill community and the southern Housing office, Fribley. Being near the Cedar-Fairmount area, residents have access to a local grocery store, bakeries and many restaurants within walking distance.

Murray Hill Residential Community

Community Buildings: Alumni House, Howe House, Staley House, Tippit House

Physical Space & Amenities: The community is located on the south side of campus near the Little Italy neighborhood. The community is considered suite-style because students live in six single rooms and share a bathroom and a kitchen/kitchenette. Each building also has a laundry room with free services and online monitoring system, and lounge spaces with a TV, game tables, and vending machines.

Murray Hill is informally known as “Bottom of the Hill,” due to it’s placement at the base of the South Residential Village. Being near Cleveland's "Little Italy" neighborhood, residents are in walking distance of many restaurants and bakeries.

Triangle Towers Residential Community

Community Buildings: Triangle Tower 1, Triangle Tower 2

Physical Space & Amenities: The Triangle Towers are operated by the CWRU Office of Real Estate. University undergraduate residents occupy Triangle Tower 2 during the regular academic year. Like the residents in the upperclass residential facilities, residents in Tower 2 will receive custodial services from the Office of Facilities and their building service workers. Maintenance is handled by the Office of Real Estate staff and details on the process will be provided during move in. Triangle Tower 2, students live either alone or with a roommate, with each apartment including a kitchen, stove, and microwave, with some including a dishwasher. Each building also has a laundry room with free services and online monitoring system, and lounge spaces with a TV, game tables, and vending machines.

Housing at Case

Shaun, who is working in housing, and I explain housing at CWRU for each year.

The following is an computer-generated summary of the video transcript.

During my first year, I stayed in Taft on Ice Agents Math, which are both part of Juniper Residential College, which is Thie newest residential college on campus. A lot of other colleges, like residential colleges, have like like competitions and like other things, which is something that case that actually doesn't have a lot of residential colleges like you have, like club teams that are purely just for your residential colleges. So the amount of events, or how often they are, depend on you and your residential directors and something that they're really good about is especially for the likes student representative. Like if you ever want, have any ideas or want to do something specific, you want to change something. They really listen to a lot, especially since they're people who are living either in your building or in one of building tracks easing. You just be like, Oh, this is something that I want to do And I think it's really cool if we did, and they will bring it up and talk about an advocate for which is something that is very interesting also with housing, what the different options are your first year. Are there certain dorms, which are sweet style and those have or quad style? And it has different Root him out of rooms It's about. It's usually about four or five dorms with one shared bathroom and eats like a shared hallway or common state lining on where you're living and those for your freshman year. Your sweets and rooms are separated by gender, but the floor Certain norms have coed Florence, while others are separated by gender on DH. That is something that you won't know going, and they don't really tell you which floors and which dorms will or will not be coed, whether or not you'll be living on a coid floor. What you likely can reach out to the housing office and request not to live on a co ed floor. The race track style dorms, which are your more stereotypical like it's a hallway you have your whole floor sharing is sort of out of bathrooms, and you have just your status. Your set up two people, two beds, one room on DH. Those air Nice because they allow a lot more of a like floor culture on DH that depending on who you are, is something the very nice I know. If you're lucky, you live in a world I'm currently saying there because it is made term, which is a cool thing, that the campus has what you can take it a class or two and it's generally every day for from the end of finals to the end of May, and hence the name a term. It allows you to just get ahead or get a requirement out of the way when you don't have a CZ many classes to worry about and then you can live on different summer campus. There's a lot of people whose takeover different reasons I'm saying here because I'm currently actually working for housing. So I'm one of the people, is helping prepare rooms and fix any problems that have been made throughout the year so that the incoming freshmen and other dorms, whoever is living in the other dorms could be ready on enjoy it just as much as we did. Like you said, 17 Tubbs Jones Hall is the I believe the actually the fully newest dorm, so it is very nice of you. After your freshman year, I don't believe that there are any common housing set up where you would have to do have a fully roommate again. That's what I will be saying in an official sophomore housing next year on the South Side, Thie freshman and upperclassmen primarily live on north side, and then sophomores live on Southside on. I will be living in How, which is Sweet South, so I will be living with five other people. Housing is interesting because there's honestly quite a bit of very Asian. Some of the freshmen dorms are getting new junipers, getting new furniture. Eso Junior pretends to have the newest, nicest things, because that is the things that more and more freshmen see because they all enter our dorms and see the show room in Smith House. When they're going on the prospective student tours or admitted student tours, that's where they go through Yes s over sophomore housing this bottom of the hill and top of the hill. Bottom of the hill is Murray Hill, and there are four houses. How in Staley are just nine storey buildings with two suites before on alumni in Tibet are four stories and a little confusing, So the difference you talk with Helen Bottom Hill is literally as it sounds. One is literally on top of a hill way Have Murray Hill on the south side of campus, which means if you live on top of the hair you have Hill, you have to climb what we call the elephants stairs. It is a task to climb sometimes, eh? So that is why I personally chose to live on the bottom of the hill because I did not want to constantly be climbing the elephants tears. Because the Southside dining hole is on the bottom of the hill as well as campus and everything else, you would have to go down the basement stairs to get to the top of the hill dorms. From my knowledge and from what I've seen of all of them and I've been in all these houses, obviously is top of the hill is a little bit nicer. Um, but top of the hill is, on average, a little bit nicer, but bottom of the hill. Most of the dorms on campus for freshmen and sophomores are twin extra long beds, which is important to keep in mind when you're purchasing your sheets. Thie S T J building as well as the village is all full sized beds with air conditioners, which makes them really nice, and those also have in sweet kitchens, and I personally am living in House six next year, which is one of the houses in the village and I, that is the village and is generally upperclassmen housing. Because I'm affiliated with a sorority that does not have a out, we're getting sweet inside of the village and so through that I'm living in there and it's going to be very exciting. In order to get the freshmen dorms, you could get into your two or three residential buildings, but no, none other fresh from normal because they do try to women how many people have access to buildings, even in that after a certain times. On certain days you can only have access to your specific residential building, which is a very nice feature for anyone who is prioritizing secret so you can get in based on your residential college so I can get. Obviously, it does get better throughout on DH. There are a lot of people who do choose to live off campus in the area. Housing a case can be a bit pricey, especially for what we're getting in the lower class houses. There are options off campus that can tend to be more expensive, but overall, I am pretty satisfied with my case housing experience. There are things that obviously could be better, but I have pretty much enjoyed and been happy with my housing experience here.

Case Western Reserve University students hope to maintain pro-Palestinian encampment for another night

Aerial view of people camping on a circular grassy area on a college campus.

A student organizer of a pro-Palestinian demonstration at Case Western Reserve University says students will seek permission to continue an encampment on the campus oval.

Jad Oglesby, a senior and vice president of the CWRU chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, said students camped overnight Monday on the Kelvin Smith Library Oval after they reached an agreement with administrators.

“We had roughly 40 to 50 students in camp here overnight during their finals week,” said Oglesby.

Earlier in the day, students tried to set up tents on the grassy lawn but were rebuffed by campus police.

Oglesby said students met with CWRU administrators Monday seeking permission for the encampment.

“It took multiple kind of instances of conversations throughout the day,” he said. “Eventually they trusted their own students to be able to camp out overnight. So they allowed us to get our tents. It turned out really well.”

Oglesby described a calm scene Monday night at the oval.

“It was a time of fellowship and community. A lot of the students came together and played cards, joked and reflected on the day that they witnessed and the moment that they're currently a part of,” he said.

Student demonstrators have set up encampments on campuses across the country, demanding a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war and disinvestment from Israel.

At Columbia University in New York City, protesters took over a campus building early Tuesday after university officials suspended students who had refused to leave a pro-Palestinian encampment. The university closed the campus to everyone but students who live in one of the seven campus dorms and employees who provide essential services, according to The New York Times .

Last week, Columbus police broke up a large demonstration at Ohio State University and arrested 35 people for criminal trespass after protesters sought to set up tents on the South Oval at the university’s main campus. OSU President Ted Carter defended the arrests saying, “Ohio State’s campus will not be overtaken in this manner.”

At CWRU, events Tuesday on the KSL Oval will include “liberation yoga,” “anti-Zionist study breaks,” poetry readings and meditations. Oglesby said university officials did not say whether the demonstrators would be allowed to camp out Tuesday night.

“We have no confirmation at the moment,” he said. “We’ll still be working on that.”
