If you have 4 Authorized Users, you will be charged $350: $175 for the first 3 Authorized Users, then $175 for the fourth Authorized User.

Merchant Classification for Rewards Categories

Merchants are assigned a merchant category code ("MCC"), which is determined in accordance with Visa/Mastercard/American Express procedures based on the kinds of products and services the merchants primarily sell. Citi does not control the assignment of these codes and is not responsible for the codes used by merchants. When you use your card to make a purchase, Citi is provided an MCC for that purchase. Citi groups similar merchant codes into categories for purposes of making rewards offers. Sometimes you may expect a purchase to fit within a rewards category but, if the code assigned to the merchant wasn't grouped into that category as recognized by Citi, your purchase will not qualify for additional miles. Please also note that purchases made through mobile/wireless technology may not earn additional miles depending on how the technology is set up to process the purchase.

Citi reserves the right to determine which purchases qualify for this offer. Miles may be earned on purchases made by Primary credit cardmembers and Authorized Users. Balance transfers, cash advances, checks that access your credit card account, items and services returned for credit, unauthorized charges, interest and account fees, traveler's checks, purchases of foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers (and similar cash-like transactions), lottery tickets, and gaming chips (and similar betting transactions) are not purchases and do not earn miles. Miles earned will be posted to the Primary credit cardmember's AAdvantage ® account in 8-10 weeks.

4 Up to 20,000 Additional Loyalty Points:

For AAdvantage ® status qualifying year, defined as March 1, 2023 - February 29, 2024, the Primary credit cardmember will earn 10,000 additional Loyalty Points for fulfilling one of the following milestones: 1.) after earning 50,000 Loyalty Points, or 2.) after spending $40,000 in purchases that post to the cardmember's account. You can only earn the first 10,000 additional Loyalty Points once in the AAdvantage ® status qualifying year of March 1, 2023 - February 29, 2024.

Additionally, if in that same qualifying year, the Primary credit cardmember earns 90,000 Loyalty Points, the Primary credit cardmember will be awarded an additional 10,000 Loyalty Points. Total additional Loyalty Points that can be earned through this benefit is 20,000 in one qualifying year.

Starting on March 1, 2024, and going forward, the Primary credit cardmember will earn 10,000 additional Loyalty Points after earning 50,000 Loyalty Points each qualifying year. If in that same qualifying year, the Primary credit cardmember earns 90,000 Loyalty Points, the Primary credit cardmember will be awarded an additional 10,000 Loyalty Points. Total additional Loyalty Points that can be earned through this benefit is 20,000 in one qualifying year.

A Primary credit cardmember may earn up to 20,000 additional Loyalty Points only once each qualifying year, even if the credit cardmember has more than one Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard account. Up to 20,000 additional Loyalty Points earned are in addition to any Loyalty Points earned for purchases made on the credit card. Purchases exclude returned goods or services, traveler's checks, purchases of foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers (and similar cash-like transactions), lottery tickets, and gaming chips (and similar betting transactions). Purchases made through additional credit cards on the Primary credit cardmember's account (Authorized Users) will count toward the Primary credit cardmember's qualifying spend.

Additional Loyalty Points earned as a result of this benefit will typically be posted to the Primary credit cardmember's AAdvantage ® account 8-10 weeks after meeting either the Loyalty Points or spend requirements. Loyalty Points only count toward status qualification for the AAdvantage ® program. Loyalty Points earned through this benefit will not count toward AAdvantage ® Million Miler™ status. Loyalty Points cannot be redeemed for award travel, AAdvantage ® miles or any other AAdvantage ® program awards. AAdvantage ® program status requirements and balance are available at aa.com/newaadvantage.

5 Up to $120 Lyft Credit:

Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard credit cardmembers may participate in Lyft and Mastercard's Take 3 Get $10 program ("Program"), by using their Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard to pay for the full amount or partial amount of three (3) Eligible Rides in a calendar month. After taking 3 Eligible Rides in a calendar month, you will then receive a $10 Lyft credit ("Credit"). Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard credit cardmembers are eligible to receive a credit of up to $120 annually. All rides must be paid for with an eligible Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard. Limit one Credit per calendar month per Lyft account. Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard credit cardmembers are not eligible for any other Mastercard credit on the Lyft app. Rides paid for using Digital Wallets including, but not limited to, Apple Pay, Android Pay, etc., are not Eligible Rides and will not count towards receiving the $10 Lyft credit.

An "Eligible Ride" is any Lyft ride type, excluding business rides and bicycle and scooter rental rides. Valid only in the USA. Whether a ride qualifies as an Eligible Ride for purposes of the Credit will be determined in Lyft's sole discretion. Credits expire 30 days after application. By participating in the Program, you agree to these terms and Lyft's Terms of Service ( https://www.lyft.com/terms ), and you agree that Lyft and Mastercard may share your information for the purpose of tracking and processing the Credit and may use anonymized, aggregated data for business analytics and offer optimization. One credit per monthly billing statement per card account. Applicable terms and conditions are subject to change without notice. To be eligible for this benefit, your Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard card must be open and in good standing at the time of statement credit fulfillment.

Merchant Classification Codes

Merchants are assigned a merchant category code ("MCC"), which is determined in accordance with Visa/Mastercard/American Express procedures based on the kinds of products and services the merchants primarily sell. We don't control the assignment of these codes and are not responsible for the codes used by merchants. When you use your card to make a purchase, we're provided an MCC for that purchase. We group similar merchant codes into categories for purposes of identifying your spend for statement credits. Sometimes you may expect a purchase to fit within a category, but if the code assigned to the merchant wasn't grouped into that category, as recognized by Citi, your purchase amount will not be eligible for a statement credit.

7 Up to $120 Avis ® or Budget Car Rental Statement Credit:

Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard credit cardmembers are eligible to receive a statement credit of up to $120 every calendar year when purchases of up to $120 or more made at Avis ® or Budget car rentals or both are charged to your card account. The credit will be awarded on car rental spend that is inclusive of time and mileage, taxes, purchases, and other fees.

This statement credit only applies to Avis or Budget brands at participating locations. Car rentals not paid for directly with Avis or Budget will not qualify; for example, car rentals purchased through travel agencies, discount travel sites, vacation clubs, tour operators, or as part of a package offered by merchants, such as cruise lines and railways, will not qualify. The purpose of the car rental must be for driver and passenger transportation. Merchants that provide RV rentals or vehicle rentals for the purpose of hauling are not included in this category.

Statement credit(s) will appear on your Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard monthly billing statement from Citi within 8-10 weeks from when the transaction was posted on your card account. One credit per card account. Applicable terms and conditions are subject to change without notice. To be eligible for this benefit, your Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard card must be open and in good standing at the time of statement credit fulfillment.

8 TSA/GE Statement Credit:

  • Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard credit cardmembers are eligible to receive one statement credit up to $100 per account every four years for either the Global Entry or the TSA PreCheck ® program application fee. Credit cardmembers must charge the application fee to their Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive credit card to qualify for the statement credit. Credit cardmembers will receive a statement credit for the first program (either Global Entry or TSA PreCheck ® ) to which they apply and pay for with their eligible card, regardless of whether they are approved for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck ® . Please allow 1-2 billing cycles after the qualifying Global Entry or TSA PreCheck ® fee is charged to the eligible account for the statement credit to be posted to the account. Only fees associated with either the Global Entry or the TSA PreCheck ® application fee will be eligible towards the statement credit.

World Elite Mastercard partners

World Elite Mastercard benefits are many but often overlooked. Here’s a summary of the extra benefits you can expect from the World Elite Mastercard program:

  • Benefits with partners such as Lyft , DoorDash , and ShopRunner
  • Complimentary room upgrades, breakfast, and other amenities at over 2,000 luxury hotels
  • Hotel lowest rate guarantee
  • 24/7 travel assistance
  • Car rental savings and elite status
  • Savings on vacations, private jets, hotels, cruises, and more

The last perk is a unique benefit available only to qualified Citigold banking clients, and it entitles you to a $145 statement credit each cardmember year as long as you remain a cardmember and are billed the $595 annual fee.

The biggest benefit of having the AAdvantage Executive World Elite card is receiving complimentary lounge access to the Admirals Club and affiliated lounges. An annual household membership to the Admirals Club alone can cost as much as $1,650.

Because complimentary lounge access allows 2 guests or immediate family to enter with the cardholder, this access benefit can be effectively the same as having a household membership, especially since you can add a family member as an authorized user and your entire traveling party, related or not, can have access ($175 each per year).

If lounge access isn’t important to you, but you still frequent American Airlines, the Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Platinum Select ® World Elite™ Mastercard ® with its annual fee of $99, waived for first 12 months , might be a good alternative selection for an AAdvantage-branded credit card.

Or if you fly a lot of different airlines, find value in earning rewards, and enjoy receiving additional travel benefits, a general travel rewards credit card could be a viable consideration.

The information regarding the Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Platinum Select ® World Elite™ Mastercard ® was independently collected by Upgraded Points and not provided nor reviewed by the issuer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the citi aadvantage executive world elite card worth it.

An individual Admirals Club membership alone can cost more than $650 and the card charges an annual fee of just $595 .

If lounge access is not important to you, you may be better off with another AAdvantage branded card with a lower annual fee or a general travel rewards credit card.

How does Admirals Club lounge access work?

The AAdvantage Executive World Elite card comes with complimentary access to Admirals Club and network lounges worldwide for the cardholder and 2 guests or their immediate family.

For example, if the cardholder is traveling with their spouse and 2 teenage children, which is a total of 3 guests, they would all be allowed to enter because they are all immediate family.

Authorized users on the card also receive complimentary Admirals Club lounge access and can bring in 2 additional guests or their immediate family. It costs $175 to add an authorized user to your card.

You can also redeem miles for an Admirals Club membership, car rentals, vacations, hotels, gift cards, magazines, or donate your miles to charity.

Will my miles expire if I cancel the card?

Miles will not expire if you cancel your AAdvantage credit card as long as the miles you have earned have been transferred to your AAdvantage frequent flyer account.

Each statement period when miles are earned, they are transferred into your AAdvantage frequent flyer account when the monthly statement closes. If you are going to cancel your card, be sure all of the miles you’ve earned have been transferred into your AAdvantage account first before canceling your card.

Any miles not transferred into your AAdvantage account could be lost.

Once miles have been deposited into your AAdvantage account (from your credit card), they are subject to the AAdvantage program rules which state that miles do not expire as long as there is current activity.

If your account goes 24 months without activity, your miles will expire.

Current activity is defined as earning or redeeming miles. Once you have a qualifying activity, the 24-month period starts over and your miles are safe for another 24 months.

Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard review: Complimentary Admirals Club membership

Benji Stawski

Editor's Note

Citi® / aadvantage® executive world elite mastercard® overview.

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® (see rates and fees ) is best for American Airlines flyers who value lounge access. It provides a full Admirals Club membership, as well as several other benefits that make flying American Airlines more enjoyable, such as a free checked bag, priority check-in, priority airport screening and priority boarding privileges, along with a boost toward elite status. Card Rating*: ⭐⭐⭐

*Card Rating is based on the opinion of TPG's editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

While many credit cards offer airport lounge access , the types of lounges each card gets you into can vary greatly. There's only one cobranded credit card that includes complimentary access to the American Airlines Admirals Club lounges: the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard.

The card has a $595 annual fee, which might seem steep but is still much less expensive than an Admirals Club membership .

This card underwent major (mostly negative) changes , effective July 23, 2023. TPG director of content Nick Ewen wasn't thrilled with them .

Today, we'll review all the refreshed benefits on this American Airlines cobranded card to help you decide whether to carry — or keep — it in your wallet.

Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite welcome offer

The Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard is currently offering 70,000 bonus miles after spending $7,000 within the first three months of account opening. This bonus is worth a very high $1,085, based on TPG's most recent valuations .

Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite benefits

What sets this card apart from the competition is that it provides complimentary Admirals Club access . The primary cardholder receives a full Admirals Club membership, which allows you and your immediate family or two traveling companions access to the club when you have a same-day boarding pass for American or one of its partners. Your credit card will be tied to your AAdvantage account number, so you don't have to carry it to get club access.

Admirals Club membership ordinarily costs between $750 and $850, depending on your status level with American . That means the annual fee covers the lounge access — and that's without all the other benefits factored in.

city executive travel

You can add up to 10 authorized users . They cost an additional $175 annual fee for the first three authorized users and $175 for each authorized user thereafter. Each authorized user receives Admirals Club access for themselves and up to two traveling companions. Just be aware that authorized users only get Admirals Club access, as opposed to a full Admirals Club membership .

There are three statement credits available:

  • Up to $120 back on eligible Avis or Budget car rentals every calendar year
  • Up to $120 back on eligible Grubhub purchases (up to a $10 statement credit each monthly billing statement)
  • Up to $120 in Lyft credits ($10 Lyft credit each month), but you have to take three eligible rides each month first to receive this credit

Here are some other valuable perks the card offers:

  • Enhanced airport experience: You and up to eight travelers on the same reservation will get priority check-in (where available), priority airport screening (where available) and priority boarding privileges. You can even check in at any business-class check-in position (or first-class check-in when business class is not available), regardless of the class of service in which you're traveling.
  • First checked bag free on domestic itineraries: On domestic itineraries flown by American or any regional subsidiary, the first checked bag for you and up to eight traveling companions on the same reservation is free. The flight must be marketed, sold and operated by American in order to get the free checked bag.
  • 25% off eligible inflight purchases: This essentially means 25% off inflight food and beverages when you pay for them with the card (not including inflight Wi-Fi).
  • Global Entry/TSA PreCheck fee statement credit : Get an up-to-$100 statement credit when paying the Global Entry fee ($100) with the card or when enrolling in TSA PreCheck ($78). You'll receive the credit once every four years. Because you also receive TSA PreCheck when enrolling for Global Entry, there's no real reason you should ever just enroll in PreCheck.

This card removed travel protections a few years back but has reintroduced trip cancellation and interruption, trip delay, and lost baggage protections as well as car rental insurance coverage as part of the card's refresh.

Finally, are no foreign transaction fees , making this card a good choice when traveling abroad.

Earning miles on the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite

With the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard, you'll earn 4 miles per dollar on eligible American Airlines purchases. Then, if you spend $150,000 on purchases in a calendar year, you'll earn a boosted rate of 5 miles per dollar spent on American purchases for the remainder of the calendar year.

You'll also earn 10 miles per dollar spent on eligible car rentals and hotels booked through American's car rental and hotel booking sites , respectively.

And you'll earn 1 mile per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases.

city executive travel

Cardholders earn a bonus of 10,000 Loyalty Points after reaching 50,000 Loyalty Points in a status qualification year. They will receive another bonus of 10,000 Loyalty Points after reaching 90,000 Loyalty Points in a status qualification year.

You will receive the bonuses regardless of how you earn the Loyalty Points. For example, you could earn 50,000 Loyalty Points by buying American Airlines tickets and shopping through the AAdvantage portal and get the 10,000 bonus just by holding the card.

Redeeming miles on the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite

The lowest round-trip tickets in the U.S. tend to start at 7,500 miles one-way for flights less than 500 miles long.

Web specials previously offered include domestic cross-country flights for 5,000 miles each way in economy or 15,000 miles each way in first class, flights to Europe from 9,000 miles each way and flights to Brazil from 15,000 miles each way .

Alternatively, you could get a ton of value redeeming your AAdvantage miles for premium-cabin awards on partner airlines , including Cathay Pacific, Etihad and Finnair.

Senior credit cards editor Matt Moffitt's favorite way of redeeming AAdvantage miles is to book business-class flights on Etihad or Qatar Airways to the Middle East, India and Africa.

Which cards compete with the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite?

American is not a transfer partner of any of the major points programs except Bilt Rewards , so the biggest competitors of this card are mostly other cobranded American Airlines cards, but you can also get tons of value from a more general premium card.

  • If you want a lower annual fee: The Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard is a solid mid-level credit card that offers elite-status-like benefits, all for a lower annual fee of $99. For more information, read our full review of the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select .
  • If you're not an avid AA flyer: It could make more sense to stick to a premium travel rewards card such as The Platinum Card® from American Express, which allows you to earn up to five points per dollar on airfare (when booked directly with the airline or Amex Travel on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year) and take advantage of myriad airline transfer partners. For more information, read our full review of the Amex Platinum .

Is the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite worth it?

Since the price of an Admirals Club membership is at least $750 each year, the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard should catch the eye of any frequent American flyer's attention. If you want Admirals Club access and to boost your AA mileage balance with a sign-up bonus (while also easing elite status requirements), this card might be a good fit. However, you might want to look elsewhere if you're looking for a card that will give you a better return on your spending .

Bottom line

With full Admirals Club membership and several other American Airlines benefits, the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite American Airlines is best for flyers who can maximize its lounge access. If that's you, then the card could definitely be a fit.

Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® review:  Luxury travel perks at a steep price

Photo of Bank of Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® on a green abstract background

Our take: The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® offers premium travel perks like Admirals Club membership, which can offset the annual fee. However, the card lacks substantial category bonuses and might not be suitable for the most frequent or infrequent travelers.

Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®

Intro bonus, rewards rates.

  • 10x Earn 10X AAdvantage miles on eligible hotels booked through aa.com/hotels and on eligible car rentals booked through aa.com/cars.
  • 4x 4x AAdvantage® miles for every $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases (5X after you spend $15,000 on airfare)
  • 1x 1x AAdvantage miles on all other purchases
  • Earns AAdvantage miles, which are not easily accessible outside of co-branded AAdvantage credit cards.
  • Every dollar spent earns one Loyalty Point toward elite status.
  • Includes Admirals Club lounge membership, valued at up to $850.
  • High annual fee
  • High spending requirement for earning the 70,000-mile welcome bonus
  • No category bonuses outside of American Airlines spending.
  • Travel perks: AAdvantage club membership, checked bag benefit, trip cancellation and interruption protection
  • Credits: Up to $120 annual credit to Avis or Budget rental cars, Up to $10 monthly credits to Lyft and Grubhub
  • Foreign transaction fee: None

Card type: Airline

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® is designed with frequent flyers in mind, specifically those loyal to American Airlines. Its primary draw is the welcome bonus and travel benefits. The card offers 70,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after spending $7,000 within the first 3 months of account opening. These AAdvantage miles can be redeemed for flights , upgrades, hotel stays car rentals and more.

Beyond the welcome bonus, the AAdvantage Executive card earns 10X AAdvantage miles on eligible hotels booked through aa.com/hotels and on eligible car rentals booked through aa.com/cars. Cardholders also earn 4x AAdvantage® miles for every $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases (5X after spending $150,000 on airfare) and 1X miles on all other spending.

Every dollar spent on this card counts as one Loyalty Point towards AAdvantage elite status. You’ll also receive 10,000 bonus Loyalty Points after earning 50,000 Loyalty Points in a status qualification year. Plus, another 10,000 Loyalty Points after reaching 90,000 Loyalty Points in the same status qualification year.

One of the standout features of this card is the Admirals Club membership it provides. This membership allows cardholders and eligible guests to access Admirals Club lounges at airports globally, offering a comfortable and premium space to relax, work or refresh between flights. Additionally, the card offers travel-related benefits such as priority check-in, boarding and a free checked bag for the primary cardholder and up to eight companions. Cardholders also receive a 25% discount on in-flight purchases charged to the card, along with up to a $100 TSA Precheck or Global Entry application fee credit every four years.

However, the AAdvantage Executive Card does come with a relatively high $595 annual fee, which might not be justifiable for occasional travelers or those who can’t fully utilize the card’s benefits. While the card provides substantial benefits for American Airlines loyalists, its redemption options are limited to American Airlines and Oneworld Alliance networks, limiting flexibility compared to other premium credit cards.

Overall, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® is a compelling choice for frequent American Airlines flyers who can maximize its travel perks, put the miles to good use and offset the annual fee through the use of its benefits.

Who is the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® good for?

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® is good for travelers loyal to American Airlines who seek premium travel perks and airport lounge access. Its Admirals Club membership, travel benefit and generous sign-up bonus cater to those who regularly fly with American Airlines and its partners but not enough to earn top-tier status.

The card’s benefits offer perks similar to what elite flyers receive, including priority check-in and boarding, free checked bags, and in-flight discounts with American Airlines. These perks extend to upwards of eight travel companions, making them even more lucrative for those who often travel with groups.

The Admirals Club membership helps to offset the steep $595 annual fee. Since Admirals Club membership costs $700-$850, the Citi AAdvantage Executive Card is a much cheaper alternative. Anyone interested in an Admirals Club lounge membership should consider the Citi AAdvantage Executive Card, since it’s more cost-effective and includes other travel perks and airline miles.

Who shouldn’t get the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®?

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® might not be the best fit for individuals who don’t fly with American Airlines or within its partner network. The card’s benefits won’t align well with your needs if your travel preferences lead you outside of the American Airlines network.

Those who have AAdvantage elite status might not find the card’s benefits useful, while those who travel infrequently won’t have much use for the much-lauded Admiral’s Club membership. Overall, the high annual fee won’t be justified for those who aren’t able to fully capitalize on the card’s perks like airport lounge access, priority boarding and baggage benefits due to infrequent travel.

The card isn’t very rewarding when it comes to everyday spending. While it offers elevated rewards on spending with American Airlines, it only earns 1 mile per dollar on everything else. If you spend quite a bit on dining, grocery stores or gas, there are better credit cards suited to your spending habits. Additionally, if you prioritize flexibility in your travel rewards and prefer cards with more versatile redemption options, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® might not offer the diversity you seek.

Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®: How to earn Rewards

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® typically offers numerous ways to earn AAdvantage miles. To start, cardholders earn 70,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after spending $7,000 within the first 3 months of account opening. Cardholders also get rewarded for every dollar spent, in the form of both redeemable miles and Loyalty Points.

The card earns 10 AAdvantage miles per dollar spent on hotels and rental cars booked through American Airlines. Cardholders also earn 4x AAdvantage® miles for every $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases, which is increased to 5 miles per dollar after you spend $150,00 on airfare. Beyond this, 1 AAdvantage® miles for every $1 spent on other purchases.

While this earning structure isn’t the most lucrative, it’s worth noting that you’ll also earn 1 Loyalty Point for every dollar spent, along with a 10,000 Loyalty Point bonus after earning 50,000 Loyalty Points in a status qualification year. You’ll earn another 10,000 Loyalty Points after reaching 90,000 in the same qualification year.

The card doesn’t usually feature rotating categories for bonus rewards. Instead, it offers consistent earning rates across various spending categories. However, in the past, there might have been limited-time promotions or offers for bonus miles on specific types of purchases, such as dining, gas stations, or travel-related expenses. These offers might vary and are subject to change based on the card’s promotions.

It’s important to check the current terms and conditions as well as any ongoing promotions to confirm the details of the sign-up bonus, earning rates, and any additional benefits offered at the time of application.

How to redeem Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® miles

There are many ways you can redeem your Citi AAdvantage Executive Card rewards. American Airlines allows members to redeem miles for flights, hotels, rental cars, vacation packages, gift cards, merchandise, magazine subscriptions, charitable donations and more. Redeeming miles for anything other than travel is usually a terrible value proposition, so we recommend avoiding it whenever possible.

The best way to redeem AAdvantage miles is for flights on either American Airlines or its partners. Thanks to a vast network, your miles can go a long way on domestic or international travel. American AAdvantage is one of the few airline rewards programs still publishing an award chart, but it should be used as a guideline rather than a firm set of prices as flights on the same route on the same day can vary widely in pricing.

Award flights start at just 7,500 miles each way and can range as high as 110,000 miles for an international first-class flight on the chart, but in reality, you can find domestic flights in economy for as low as 5,000 miles with web specials.

If you don’t have enough miles for a premium flight experience, you can use your AAdvantage miles for an upgrade instead. While there are various fare restrictions and rules, you can upgrade your seat for 5,000 – 70,000 AAdvantage miles. The exact number depends on the cabin you book and the region you’re flying to.

Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® rates and fees

Credit cards similar to the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®

If the Citi AAdvantage Executive Card’s benefits don’t quite fit your travel needs, there are several alternatives. For a lower annual fee, you can enjoy most of the travel perks without the markup (and lounge access). But if lounge access is important to you, you can enjoy a wider network by opting for a different card.

Citi® AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Card vs. Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®

The Citi® AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Card and the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® are geared toward different types of American Airlines travelers. The Platinum Select card is suitable for moderate to frequent flyers seeking a much lower $95 annual fee.  It provides some of the same perks as the AAdvantage Executive card, including a free checked bag, preferred boarding on American Airlines flights, a 25% in-flight discount and waived foreign transaction fees. The card has a slightly lower 50,000-mile welcome bonus after spending $2,500 within the first three months of account opening.

The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Card is also more rewarding for everyday purchases. The card earns 2X miles on purchases at gas stations, restaurants and American Airlines. All other spending earns 1 mile per dollar spent, along with 1 Loyalty Point. While it doesn’t include lounge access, it provides a more practical perk: A $125 American Airlines Flight Discount after you spend $20,000 or more in a card membership year. If you’re looking for an AAdvantage card with a reasonable annual fee and practical American Airlines benefits, the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Card is a better fit.

The Platinum Card® from American Express vs. Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®

The Platinum Card® from American Express is a better alternative for those seeking a premium credit card with more versatile benefits and rewards. The Amex Platinum Card has a higher $695 annual fee, but it provides access to a large network of airport lounges globally, including Priority Pass, Centurion Lounge network, Lufthansa and Delta lounges. Beyond lounge access, cardholders receive $1,500 in travel and entertainment credits, Gold elite status with Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy. While the Amex Platinum Card lacks airline travel perks, it does offer an annual $200 airline fee credit that can be applied towards checked bag fees, in-flight purchases and more.

The card also earns valuable Amex Membership Rewards points, which can be transferred to 21 airline and hotel loyalty programs. While American Airlines isn’t among these partners, you can book American flights by transferring your points to British Airways Executive Club, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, Etihad Guest, Iberia Plus or Qantas Frequent Flyer.

This Executive card is ideal for individuals loyal to American Airlines who prioritize benefits within the AA ecosystem, while the Platinum Card from Amex offers more diversified perks across various airlines and hotel chains, appealing to those seeking a broader range of travel benefits and rewards. Ultimately, the choice between the two cards depends on your travel preferences, loyalty to American Airlines and the breadth of travel benefits you desire beyond a specific airline ecosystem.

To view rates and fees of The Platinum Card® from American Express, see  this page .

Is the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® right for you?

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® is an excellent fit for frequent travelers who are dedicated to American Airlines and its partners. If you find yourself frequently flying with American Airlines and value premium travel perks like access to Admirals Club lounges, priority boarding and free checked bags, this card can significantly enhance your travel experience. Additionally, the generous welcome bonus and ability to earn AAdvantage miles and Loyalty points through everyday spending make it an appealing choice for those who want to fast-track their way to elite status via credit card spending.

However, this card might not suit travelers who already have elite status, don’t plan on paying for lounge access and prefer more flexible rewards. The high annual fee is quite steep, but even more so if you don’t utilize the travel perks. Moreover, if you seek a broader range of redemption options or prefer a card with rotating bonus categories that align better with your spending habits, other travel rewards cards might be a more suitable choice.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Arrow showing the direction of metro line 1 and 2

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

city executive travel

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

city executive travel

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

city executive travel

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

city executive travel

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

city executive travel

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Norilsk: The city built by gulag prisoners where Russia guards its Arctic secrets

Environmental activists are frustrated by how authorities handled a diesel spill which poured into two Arctic rivers in late May.

Arctic suffers worst ever industrial spill

The drive from Norilsk airport to the city takes you past mile after mile of crumbling, Soviet-era factories.

It looks like an endless, rusting scrapyard - a jumble of pipes, industrial junk and frost-bitten brickwork. If you were looking for an industrial apocalypse film setting, this would be your place - but you're unlikely to get the permissions.

Norilsk was built in Stalin's times by gulag prisoners. This gritty industrial city is a testament to their endurance both of the cruelty of Stalin's regime and of the harsh polar climate. There were no thoughts then on how to build to protect the environment, just to survive it.

Vasily Ryabinin doesn't think much has changed, at least in ecological terms. He used to work for the local branch of the federal environmental watchdog, Rosprirodnadzor, but quit in June after exposing what he says was a failure to investigate properly the environmental impact of the gigantic diesel spill which poured into two Arctic rivers in late May.

At 21,000 tonnes, it was the largest industrial spill in the polar Arctic .

Despite the Kremlin declaring a federal emergency and sending a host of different agencies to participate in the clean-up, just last week Mr Ryabinin and activists from Greenpeace Russia found another area where technical water used in industrial processes was being pumped directly into the tundra from a nearby tailing pond. Russia's investigative committee has promised to investigate.

"The ecological situation here is so bad," Mr Ryabinin says.

"The latest constructions such as the tailing pond at the Talnack ore-processing plant were built exclusively by Nornickel chief executive Vladimir Potanin's team and supposedly in accordance with ecological standards, but on satellite images you can see that all the lakes in the vicinity have unnatural colours and obviously something has got into them."

Mining company Nornickel would disagree. It has admitted flagrant violations at the tailing pond and suspended staff it deems responsible at both the Talnack plant and at Norilsk Heat and Power plant no 3 where the diesel spill originated from.

On Thursday it appointed Andrey Bougrov, from its senior management board, to the newly-created role of senior vice president for environmental protection. It has a clear environmental strategy, provides regular updates on the status of the spill, and its Twitter feed is filled with climate-related alerts.

But what investors read is very different to the picture on the ground.

21,000 tonnes of diesel oil has spilled into two rivers in Norilsk

Norilsk used to be a closed city - one of dozens across the Soviet Union shut off to protect industrial secrets. Foreigners need special permissions approved by the Federal Security Service (FSB) to enter the region. It would take an invitation from Nornickel to make that happen and, for the past month since the spill, that has not been forthcoming.

Unlike in Soviet times, Russian citizens are now free to come and go. That's why our Sky News Moscow team were able to fly in and travel around the city, even if getting to the spill site was blocked. What they were able to film provides a snapshot of the immense challenge Russia faces in upgrading its Soviet-era industrial infrastructure, particularly at a time when climate change is melting the permafrost on which much of it was built.

Just downwind from one of the rusting factories on the city outskirts is a huge expanse of dead land. The skeletal remains of trees stand forlorn against the howling Arctic winds. Sulphur dioxide poisoning has snuffed the life out of all that lived here. Norilsk is the world's worst emitter of sulphur dioxide by a substantial margin.

"For 80km south of here everything is dead," Mr Ryabinin says, "and for at least 10km in that direction too. Everything here depends on the wind."

Immediately after the spill, Mr Ryabinin filmed and took samples from the Daldykan river just a few kilometres from the fuel tank which had leaked. By that point the river was a churning mix of diesel and red sludge dredged up from the riverbed by the force of the leak. Norilsk's rivers have turned red before and the chemical residues have sunk to the bottom, killing all life there. Nothing has lived in those rivers for decades.

In his capacity as deputy head of the local environmental watchdog, Mr Ryabinin says he insisted that he be allowed to fly further north to check the levels of contamination in Lake Pyasino and beyond.

Nornickel at the time claimed the lake was untouched by the spill. Mr Ryabinin says his boss encouraged him to let things be.

"I can't be sure I would have found anything, but this sort of confrontation - making sure I didn't go there with a camera, let alone with bottles for taking samples, it was all very clear to me. It was the final straw."

Rosprirodnadzor refused to comment to Sky News on Mr Ryabinin's allegations or suggestions that the agency was working hand in hand with Nornickel.

Georgy Kavanosyan is an environmental blogger with a healthy 37,000 following on YouTube. Shortly after the spill, he set out for Lake Pyasino and to the Pyasina River beyond to see how far the diesel had spread.

"We set out at night so that the Norilsk Nickel security wouldn't detect us. I say at night, but they've got polar nights there now, north of the Arctic Circle. So it's still light but it's quieter and we managed to go past all the cordons."

He is one of the few to have provided evidence that the diesel has in fact travelled far beyond where the company admits. Not just the 1,200km (745m) length of Lake Pyasino but into the river beyond.

He says his measurements indicated a volume of hydrocarbons dissolved in the water of between two and three times normal levels. He thinks after he published his findings on YouTube, the authorities' vigilance increased.

Greenpeace Russia have spent the last two weeks trying to obtain samples from Lake Pyasino and the surrounding area. They have faced difficulties getting around and flying their samples out for independent analysis.

They are now waiting for results from a laboratory in St Petersburg but say the samples remain valid technically for just four days after collection and that they weren't able to make that deadline due to the authorities' actively obstructing their work.

Vasily Ryabinin and Elena Sakirko from Greenpeace. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Elena Sakirko from Greenpeace Russia specialises in oil spills and says this has happened to her before. This time, a police helicopter flew to the hunter's hut where they were staying and confiscated the fuel for the boat they were using. Then a deputy for the Moscow city parliament tasked with bringing the samples back from Norilsk was forced to go back empty-handed.

"We were told at the airport we needed permission from the security department of Nornickel," Ms Sakirko says. "We asked them to show us some law or statement to prove that this was legal or what the basis for this was, but they haven't showed us anything and we still don't understand it."

Nornickel announced this week that the critical stage of the diesel spill is over. The company is now finalising dates for a press tour for foreign media and for other international environmentalists.

Mr Ryabinin thinks this should have happened weeks ago.

"If we don't let scientists come to the Arctic region to evaluate the impact of the accident, then in the future if anything similar happens, we won't know what to do."

A spokesperson for Nornickel said the company "is actively cooperating with the scientific community and will meticulously assess both the causes and effects of the accident."

The Russian city of Norilsk. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Nornickel considers permafrost thawing to be the primary cause of the accident, but is waiting for the end of investigation before making a final statement, the spokesperson said.

They added that the company "accepts full responsibility for the incidents on its sites these past two months and holds itself accountable for any infrastructural deficits or poor decisions by personnel.

"The imperative is to do everything to clean up our sites, instil a stronger culture of transparency and safety in our workforce, and ensure that such situations do not occur in the future."
