Your Holiday Essentials

Tour introduction.

Our 14-day tour is set amidst picturesque American countryside: the scenic Shenandoah Valley, the mighty James River and a wealth of National Parks. We explore historic American towns and cities such as Fredericksburg, Richmond, Lexington, Harper’s Ferry and of course, Gettysburg and visit the major eastern civil war engagements en-route. We walk over superbly preserved battlefields, often situated within their own national parkland, enjoy inspiring presentations not only from your expert historian, Fred Hawthorne, but from selected park rangers and visit a wealth of museums, historic buildings and interpretation centres.

This is a Civil War tour like no other: we are based out of full-service hotels (including hot breakfast) where we can enjoy drinks in the bar. Every evening we experience a wealth of restaurants, including several historic taverns, in which we enjoy a wide and varied cuisine.

During the American Civil War more Americans lost their lives than during the whole of WW1 and WW2 combined. An estimated 750,000 – some 2% of the population – died of battle wounds or disease. For four years, battles raged across the continent, but rarely was the fighting fiercer than in the Eastern Theater where six of the ten bloodiest battles of the war were fought. Encouraged by early victories, the Confederate forces held off subsequent Federal advances around Richmond until they felt confident enough to take the war into the North, where their advances were checked at Antietam in 1862 and Gettysburg in 1863. After achieving their ‘high water mark’, Southern forces were engaged in a fight against the inevitable which was to finally end at a small courthouse in Appomattox in April 1865.

Thence to Fredericksburg where we check in to our hotel for the next two nights.

Day 3 - Fredericksburg & Chancellorsville

This afternoon we visit the Chancellorsville Museum and interpretative centre and walk the battlefield to include Hazel Grove, the Lee-Jackson last bivouac and the Chancellor Clearing.

Day 4 - The Overland Campaign

Receive a brief on the Battle of the Wilderness from the ‘Shelter’ and Saunder’s Field with interpretive stops at Widow Tapp Farm and the Brock Road intersection, the Higgerson and Chewning clearings and the spot where Longstreet was wounded. Following in the footsteps of the Union army to Spotsylvania we visit Todd’s Tavern, Laurel Hill, the Mule Shoe Salient, the ‘Bloody Angle’ and the courthouse and jail. On our southward journey we see where ‘Stonewall’ Jackson spent his last hours and visit the J.E.B Stuart memorial. We end the day at Cold Harbor with its extensive earthworks including the Confederate entrenchments and the Connecticut heavy artillery line. Check in to our Richmond-area hotel for one night.

Day 5 - The Peninsula Campaign

We visit locations associated with the first Battle of the Ironclad Warships USS Monitor and CSS Virginia (Merrimac) and the superbly preserved Fort Monroe National Monument from where McClellan launched his campaign and where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was later imprisoned. At the Mariner’s Museum at Newport News is the USS Monitor Centre where we see how the historic ironclad is being preserved. We will also stop at Yorktown, the Warwick Line, Dam #1, and Williamsburg where we check-in for one night.

Day 6 - Richmond and its Battles

From the Chickahominy swamps we commence our exploration of the Seven Days Battles for Richmond stopping at Beaver Dam Creek, Mechanicsburg, Gaines Mill, the Grapevine Bridge, McClellan’s Trent House headquarters, Savages Station, White Oak Swamp, Glendale and finally the climactic slaughter at Malvern Hill as we follow Lee’s crushing blows to destroy McClellan’s army. In the afternoon we drive into Richmond, capital of the Confederacy against which the 1862 campaign focused. We will visit the Confederate “White House” where docents will describe President Jefferson Davis and his large family’s stay in the city. We will drive down past the Virginia State Capitol which served as the Confederate Congress’s home for the duration of the war. We end the day at the magnificent and sparkling new American Civil War Museum (formerly the Museum of the Confederacy) and the National Park Visitor Centre at Historic Tredegar Iron Foundry. Continue to Chester, VA for two nights.

Day 7 - Siege of Petersburg

At City Point we walk out to Grant’s headquarters and the ‘Dictator’ siege mortar, see the eastern front restored fortifications, and visit Fort Stedman, the famous Crater and, time permitting, the Blandford Church with its memorial stained glass windows. Our day ends at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War soldier, one of the finest museums of its kind.

Day 8 - Retreat to Appomattox

At the remote Five Forks Museum we handle some of the wonderful collection of reproduction weaponry and munitions and explore the battlefield. Like Lee, we then travel west to Sailor’s Creek State Park to explore the battlefield, museum and the Hillsman House. This afternoon is spent at Appomattox Museum and battlefield park where we view the surrender movie, explore the village, visit the McLean House and the ‘Surrender Triangle’ where the laying down of arms took place. Continue to Lynchburg, Virginia for an overnight stay.

Day 9 - Lexington and the Shenandoah Valley

Drive to Lexington via the Blue Ridge Mountains and the James Valley (both in early autumn colours), where we visit the Lee Chapel and family tomb and visit the grounds of the Virginia Military Institute to view the old barracks, the commandants house and cadet chapel and museum. We continue along the magnificent Shenandoah Valley to New Market with its VMI ‘Hall of Valor’ and ‘Field of lost shoes’. Thence to Winchester for one night.

Day 10 - Winchester and Harpers Ferry

We start at Middletown with an introduction to the battle of Cedar Creek and then return to Winchester to visit Stonewall Jackson’s headquarters which contains many of his personal possessions. This afternoon we visit Harpers Ferry, situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers and explore this historic town, perhaps climbing up to Jefferson Rock. Continue to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and check-in for three nights.

Day 11 - The Maryland Campaign of 1862 and Antietam

At Monocacy we visit the battlefield museum and discuss the lost Special Orders 191 and then drive through the South Mountain passes stopping at Crampton’s Gap and ‘War Correspondent’s Arch’ to Sharpsburg, Maryland. At the Pry House Farm, we gain an appreciation of the Battle of Antietam from the Union perspective and at the Visitors’ Centre we watch the orientation film. We follow the Union approach to the Sunken Lane: amongst our many stops here will be Dunker Church, Miller’s and Otto’s Cornfield, the Sunken Lane and Burnside’s Bridge.

Day 12 - Gettysburg

The greatest battle of the American Civil War and for many, the single most important event of that war. We devote our last full day exploring this site. We will tour many of the great sites associated with the battle: Oak Hill, Cemetery Hill, Little Round Top, and the famous Bloody Angle. A highlight of all our classic Eastern Civil War tours is the opportunity to walk the route of the climactic attack: Pickett’s Charge. In the afternoon we will visit the brilliantly restored Cyclorama of Gettysburg set within one of the finest military museums in the world. Our farewell dinner will be at a historic Gettysburg Tavern.

Day 13 - Final Thoughts

We visit Shriver House, a museum in the 19th-Century home of a Civil War soldier's family, exploring the civilian experience of the war. Thence to the Gettysburg National Cemetery, where we pay our respects on this final stop of our tour. We then depart for Washington and our evening flights.

civil war tour

Join us as we follow in the footsteps of the Army of the Potomac exploring the costly battlefields like Manassas (Bull Run), Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Courthouse. Experience what trench warfare was like in the 1860s at Petersburg, which led in turn to the fall of Confederate capitol of Richmond. Finally, learn more about Lee's surrender to U.S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse. On our way to Gettysburg, the high-water mark of the Confederacy, we'll travel through the Shenandoah Valley to learn of the cavalry's importance in this fertile land of Virginia. Complete with experienced battlefield guides, this tour explores a turbulent aspect of our nation's history. See an ante-bellum Southern plantation, visit Pamplin Historic Park-Living History Museum of the Civil War Soldier, and view the infamous site of the world's first Ironclad naval battle. You'll return home enriched by the experience.

Day 1: Battle of Bull Run

civil war tour

We depart the Baltimore airport in the early afternoon for first battlefield of the eastern theater, Bull Run. Here, we'll explore the fateful encounter of July 21, 1861 that sent the soldiers under McDowell and civilian spectators scurrying back to DC. Even after the Union defeat at first Bull Run, Lincoln continued to press the DC to Richmond line which resulted in these grand armies meeting again. Almost one year later in late August, the Second Battle of Bull Run took place. Walk the grounds of these monumental battlefields and learn how "Stonewall" Jackson earned his name and how his men won their place in Southern legend. (Three nights in Manassas, Virginia)

Day 2: Antietem • Harper's Ferry

After an early breakfast, we'll head to South Mountain to learn more about the campaign which led to forces culminating at Sharpsburg (or Antietam), Maryland on September 17, 1862. At Antietam we'll view an educational film at the visitor's center reliving the bloodiest day in American history - a tactical Union victory. Next we'll visit the infamous landmarks of Dunker Church, the Cornfield, Burnside's Bridge, and the Sunken Road (posthumously named Bloody Lane). Our last stop in Antietam is at the Clara Barton Monument, honoring the founder of the American Red Cross. In the early afternoon we'll head to the nearby town of Harpers Ferry, set majestically on the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. Harpers Ferry, always a thriving commercial town, received national fame when John Brown and his posse seized the federal arsenal in an attempt to end slavery.

Day 3: Fredericksburg • Chancellorsville

This morning we'll begin our sightseeing with a tour of the Fredericksburg battlefield and its surrounding sites. Learn about Ambrose Burnside's first and last battle on December 13, 1862 as the commander of the Army of the Potomac. We'll visit the Stone Wall, where countless Union soldiers fell before Lee's well-entrenched men on Marye's Heights. We'll view the monument to Confederate Sergeant Richard Kirkland, "the Angel of Marye's Heights," who risked his life to comfort the dying enemy. A short tour is scheduled of Chatham Plantation that served as both a Union headquarters and army field hospital. The afternoon tour will be comprised of a trip to nearby Chancellorsville, where new Union commander, Joseph Hooker, battled Lee in early May of 1863. Unfortunately, for the confederacy, the battlefield marks the spot where Stonewall Jackson was mistakenly shot by his own men. He died eight days later.

Day 4: The Wilderness • Spotsylvania

civil war tour

The Battle of the Wilderness was the first of many battles between "Unconditional Surrender" Grant and his formidable foe, Robert E. Lee. Through dense undergrowth and thicket, which caught fire - trapping many of the wounded, the two armies battled with catastrophic losses. While May 5 & 6, 1864 tactically ended in a draw, Grant and his men broke the stalemate and marched south to Spotsylvania Courthouse. We'll follow that path and spend the afternoon exploring this field, paying special attention to the infamous "bloody angle." Throughout that week in mid-May, the armies fought continually - resulting in Lee suppressing Union attacks and holding his ground. Although losses in the Army of the Potomac were running high enough to earn Grant the new derisive name of "Butcher Grant," he followed Lincoln's plan and continued to advance towards Richmond.

Day 5: Ante-Bellum Plantation • Hampton Roads

Today we'll take a break from the route of the Army of the Potomac and travel to the mouth of the James River to visit a working ante-bellum plantation. Situated directly on the river, these large agricultural centers were a huge part of pre-Civil War Southern society. After lunch, we'll head to Portsmouth to learn more about the Naval aspect of the "War Between the States." We'll view the site of the Ironclads where the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia fought their first battle rendering all other navies in the world obsolete. Later this afternoon we'll visit the historic district and some of Portsmouth's naval museums.

Day 6: Petersburg Battlefield • Pamplin Park

civil war tour

Today we'll join up with the Army of the Potomac and Lieutenant General Grant at the Petersburg battlefield and his headquarters at nearby Hopewell on the James River. At Petersburg, we'll visit the site of the Crater - the failed master plan of some Pennsylvania miners, which, unfortunately resulted in the slaughter of many soldiers of the USCT. After the nine-and-a-half month siege of Petersburg (and grueling life in the trenches), the city fell to Union troops. Today we'll learn why this event marked the fall of Richmond, and eventually the Confederacy. During the afternoon, you'll have the opportunity to explore, Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier. Living history activities, replica plantations, battlefield walks (along the original siege line), and an interactive solider museum all help to bring Civil War realities to the twenty-first century.

Day 7: Richmond • Battlefields • Downtown

Our sightseeing today begins in Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy. We'll spend time visiting the surrounding battlefields such as Cold Harbor, Fort Harrison and others with our experienced guides. The afternoon is free for you to visit the downtown monuments to the South's most famous Civil War generals, tour a Confederacy Museum, or perhaps take in some contemporary entertainment.

Day 8: Appotomax Courthouse • Shenadoah Valley

civil war tour

After the fall of Richmond in early April 1865, the Army of the Potomac continued to press west in pursuit of the Army of Northern Virginia. We'll meet them at the infamous site of Appomattox Courthouse, where Lee formally surrendered to Grant on April 9, 1865. We'll visit the monumental meeting place of Grant and Lee, the McLean house, as well as the avenue where the defeated Confederate Army stacked arms. Although this marks the end of the Eastern Theater campaign, it doesn't mark the end of our tour. We'll continue west to the quaint, historic town of Lexington, Virginia in the heart of the pastoral Shenandoah Valley and visit the home of devout Presbyterian, Stonewall Jackson. Our journey continues to New Market where the brave VMI (Virginia Military Institute) cadets risked their lives to defend their homes. While here we'll visit the museum and historic monument. (Two nights in Hagerstown, Md)

Day 9: Gettysburg

Often called the "high water mark of the confederacy," Gettysburg has been lauded as the best-marked battlefield in the world. Hundreds of markers and monuments preserve the memory of those who died in the Civil War. After a visit to the educational visitor's center and museum, we'll embark on a tour of the battlefield and famous sites such as Little Round Top, Devil's Den, the Peach Orchard and of course, the infamous Pickett's Charge. Free time this afternoon allows you to explore your own personal interests such as the wax museum, a more in-depth look at the battlefield or a historic walk through the town.

Day 10: Transfer to Baltimore

We board our motorcoach this morning for Baltimore. Although our tour has ended, we are leaving with a wealth of memories, moving history and new friends.

Civil War Tour: War on the Rivers, Rails & Mountains

This tour fills an important need in the study of the Civil War—a most welcome addition to the Ambrose offerings!

– G. Bowles

This exclusive Civil War Tour covers the Western Theater, where the war raged on the rivers, rails and mountains from Atlanta to Chattanooga and Nashville.

In the Western Theatre of the American Civil War, over 200 miles of the Western & Atlantic RR pierced the South like a dagger, plunging into the Confederate heartland of Tennessee and Georgia. After the fall of Nashville in February 1862, the Union converted Tennessee’s capital city into a huge supply depot. Then, using Nashville as a base, Federal armies probed deeper into the South, following the rails over the  magnificent and challenging landscape from Nashville, through Chattanooga, to Atlanta. The mountains and rivers over which the rails ran soon became crucial battlegrounds for control of the deep South.

This touring adventure will study the military campaigns and strategy of both sides, while delving into the minds of the leaders who were willing to sacrifice their lives and property for their countries.

User reviews rating score:

  • The Atlanta Campaign:  We begin our study of the struggle for control of this crucial Southern city.  The many pivotal battles fought in this region give us an appreciation for the commanders and men on both sides as well as how the rivers, rails and mountains came into play.
  • Chattanooga, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain:  The hard-fought battle of Chickamauga was a Confederate victory, but the Union army returned under U.S. Grant to capture Chattanooga. We discuss the strategies and tactics employed by both sides and visit specific sites such as Brown's Ferry and scenic Lookout Mountain for the "Battle above the Clouds."
  • Stone's River/Murfreesboro:  The New Year of 1863 opened with the battle that shocked the nation with its destruction as Braxton Bragg hurled his Confederate Army of Tennessee against William Rosecrans' Army of the Cumberland.
  • Franklin:  Confederate General John Bell Hood went on the offensive pushing north and hoping to defeat the Union army in Tennessee and march to the Ohio River—and beyond. His aggressive pursuit and attack on John Schofield's positions cost the South six generals and a shattered army.
  • Nashville:  Hood did not give up after Franklin, but moved his weakened army on Nashville

Day-By-Day Itinerary

Day 1 welcome reception.

Guests arrange to arrive in Atlanta and meet at our hotel for a welcome reception and dinner.   Our historian will provide an overview of the tour.

DAY 2  Atlanta

After breakfast we will visit the Atlanta History Center.   We discuss the Andrews Raid of 1862 and see the restored locomotive, Texas, which pursued the Raiders.   This raid was made famous in the 1926 Buster Keaton film, The General , and later in the 1956 Fess Parker film,

The Great Locomotive Chase . We then go to the Kennesaw House (the Marietta Museum of History) before going to the Kennesaw Mountain National Military Park.   This afternoon we visit the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History where we learn more about the raid and see the restored locomotive, The General .

DAY 3 Atlanta and Chattanooga

We continue our study of the Atlanta campaign at Allatoona Pass and the bridge over the Etowah River that Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston burned.   We then travel to Kingston where the Andrews Raid plan unraveled, and where General William Tecumseh Sherman encamped and planned his “March to the Sea.”   After lunch in charming Adairsville, we visit key sites of the campaign in Resaca, Dalton and Ringgold, Georgia. We end the day at our hotel in Chattanooga.

DAY 4 Chickamauga National Military Park

We begin our day at Chickamauga National Military Park.   The battle was a costly victory for the Confederates. Union Colonel John T. Wilder described it as, two armies mauling each other “like two wild beasts, and each fought as long as it could stand up in a knock-down and drag-out encounter.”   We study all the key aspects of the battle in which General George Thomas earned the sobriquet, “Rock of Chickamauga” for covering the Union retreat.

DAY 5 Lookout Mountain, Brown's Ferry

We start our study of the Chattanooga campaign in front of the HQ site of General Thomas where U.S. Grant arrived to assume command in late October 1863.   Afterwards we ascend Lookout Mountain, one of the most scenic spots in the region. The “Battle Above the Clouds” was fought here, and the mountain crest affords us spectacular views of the city of Chattanooga, the Tennessee River, the Wauhatchie Valley, and Brown’s Ferry. This afternoon we go to the rarely-viewed site of the fight at Brown’s Ferry, then to the Wauhatchie battle site, Fort Wood, South Chickamauga Creek, Orchard Knob,   and Missionary Ridge.

DAY 6 Murfreesboro, Ferguson Hall

This morning we travel 90 miles to Murfreesboro, TN.   Here was fought the critical Battle of Stones River, the brutal New Year’s fight that was the first step down the Western & Atlantic RR to Chattanooga.   That afternoon we stop at Ferguson Hall, the Tennessee Children’s home in Spring Hill, where Confederate General Earl Van Dorn was murdered for “violating the sanctity” of the home of Dr. James Peters and his beautiful wife, Jessie.

DAY 7 Nashville, Carnton Plantation

When the Union wrested control of the Mississippi River in the west and Robert E. Lee’s army of Northern Virginia was constricted in Petersburg and Richmond, the last mobile Confederate army made a final offensive led by the aggressive John Bell Hood.   His army caught up with the Federals under John Schofield at Franklin.   Schofield, while attempting to withdraw to Nashville, dug in and repulsed a furious Southern onslaught that resulted in devastating losses to Hood’s Army of Tennessee, including the deaths of six generals.   Today, we visit Carnton Plantation, the Lotz House and Carter House, where families huddled in the cellar while the battle raged around them.

DAY 8 Nashville, Traveller's Rest, Belmont Mansion

We begin our day outside of Nashville at Traveller’s Rest, General Hood’s HQ for the Battle of Nashville.   Hood had positioned his weakened army of 30,000 just south of the city, where he dared George Thomas’ 55,000 strong Army of the Cumberland to attack.   We will see the Peach Orchard and Shy’s Hill where the Confederate flank was turned; then to the initial Confederate line at the Battle of Nashville Memorial.   We stop at the Belmont Mansion for lunch.   Afterwards we visit the 1897 full-size replica of the Parthenon, which helped give Nashville the appellation, “Athens of the South.”   We will end our day with a farewell dinner and musical entertainment on the river in downtown Nashville.

DAY 9 Transfer to Airport

New SAHT experience did not disappoint!

Until booking this latest tour and then reading several books on this theatre of Civil War, I knew very little of how strategic these battles were. The loss of life by both armies rivalled the more well known battles such as Gettysburg and Vicksburg – such was the importance of holding the railroads. Our historian Parker Hills detailed the movements of the armies at each stop; his maps make it clear what happened as you look over the landscape and battlefields. I loved everything about this tour – perhaps a highlight for me was being at the top of Lookout Mountain on a misty morning imagining how it would have been with the two armies clashing at the ‘Battle above the Clouds’. All Museums, Mansions and sites extremely interesting, our Hotels exceptional! Thanks to Parker, Mark and Marina for providing a memorable experience sure to become another permanent and popular Civil War Tour.

  • Walk around and appreciate the memorial.

Stop #8: Lincoln’s Summer Cottage

President Lincoln spent his wartime summers at this cottage, located on the grounds of a veterans’ home. He used the peace and quiet to formulate the Emancipation Proclamation and other critical war decisions.

  • Take a tour of the house.
  • Browse the informative exhibits.

Stop #9: Fort Stevens

Details: https://www.nps.gov/places/fort-stevens.htm

Civil War Is Nearing a Coveted Global Box Office Milestone

  • Civil War nears $100 million globally, aiming to surpass A24's previous biggest hit.
  • The film's success is surprising despite divisive reviews and a reported $50 million budget.
  • The political satire Civil War follows war journalists amid a civil war in the U.S., receiving mixed reviews.

Even in 20 days of release, the dystopian action film Civil War hasn’t dropped below the top three spots of the domestic box office charts. On Wednesday, just ahead of its fourth weekend in theaters, the film passed a major new global box office milestone , as it sets its target on the coveted $100 million mark worldwide. Written and directed by Alex Garland , Civil War will soon overtake the horror film Talk to Me to become the A24’s second-biggest release of all time globally, after having broken several records for the indie outfit over the course of its spectacular run.

With $58 million domestically and another $33.6 million from overseas markets, Civil War ’s cumulative global gross now stands at $91.6 million . This puts it just around $500,000 shy of overtaking Talk to Me ’s lifetime run. Civil War will then aim to overtake A24’s biggest ever release, the Oscar-winning genre mashup Everything Everywhere All at Once . Released a couple of years ago, the film generated $77 million domestically and $143 million worldwide. While Civil War has a strong shot at overtaking it domestically, the chances of it grossing nearly $150 million worldwide, without any Oscars attention, seem bleak.

The film has already broken opening day and opening weekend records for A24 , in addition to having cemented itself as the studio’s second-biggest domestic box office release , ahead of popular titles such as Uncut Gems , Hereditary , Midsommar , Lady Bird , Moonlight , and The Iron Claw . Civil War marks A24’s first real attempt at big box office success, and was produced on a reported budget of $50 million — the biggest yet for the studio, significantly higher than the $30 million that it spent on Ari Aster ’s Beau Is Afraid last year. And the investment appears to be paying off, with the movie performing surprisingly well despite divisive reviews.

'Civil War' Will Pass the $100 Million Milestone In a Few Days

Civil War follows a group of war journalists on a cross-country drive to Washington D.C., where they plan on covering a brewing insurrection against the dictatorial president . The movie presents a United States in the middle of a civil war, with numerous warring factions having taken up arms against each other. Civil War ’s blunt political commentary and scathing satire has divided audiences , who awarded it a B- CinemaScore and a 71% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes . The critics’ score on RT, on the other hand, stands at a more favorable 81%. In his review , Collider’s Matthew Donato called it Garland’s “best film yet.”

Starring Kirsten Dunst , Wagner Moura , Cailee Spaeny , Stephen McKinley Henderson , and Jesse Plemons in a memorable single-scene cameo, Civil War has also benefited from an IMAX release. You can watch the film in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.

The film follows events in the U.S. during a civil war. Government forces attack civilians. Journalists are shot in the Capitol.

Civil War Is Nearing a Coveted Global Box Office Milestone

'Civil War' Is Now A24’s Second-Biggest Hit of All Time at the Domestic Box Office

Alex Garland's divisive film has overtaken the likes of 'Uncut Gems', 'Hereditary', and 'Moonlight'.

The Big Picture

  • Civil War is A24's second-highest grossing film at $51 million, surpassing favorites like Lady Bird and Hereditary .
  • The dystopian action movie is generating buzz for its divisive subject matter and strong performances from the cast.
  • A24 is breaking into big-budget cinema with Civil War and eyeing future projects like adapting Death Stranding into a film.

In just over two full weeks of release, writer-director Alex Garland ’s Civil War has already become the second-biggest film in indie outfit A24’s history. Having been granted the studio’s biggest-ever budget of $50 million, the dystopian action movie passed the $50 million mark on its third Friday in domestic theaters, overtaking Uncut Gems ’ lifetime haul to claim the number two spot on the list of A24’s highest-grossing films. The studio’s top-grossing film of all time remains Everything Everywhere All at Once , which concluded its domestic run with $77 million a couple of years ago, and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Civil War added $1.9 million this Friday, taking its running domestic total to $51 million in just 15 days . The chances of the film eventually overtaking Everything Everywhere All at Once look bright, especially since it's doing so well on Premium-Large Format and IMAX screens. The controversies that Civil War has generated because of its divisive subject-matter are also helping draw attention, no doubt. Set in a near future America that has been divided by a civil war , the film follows a group of war journalists on a cross-country journey to Washington D.C. , where they intend to cover the capture of the dictatorial president.

Civil War ’s $51 million gross puts it ahead of memorable A24 movies such as Lady Bird and Talk to Me (both with $48 million), Hereditary ($44 million), The Iron Claw ($35 million), Moonlight and Midsommar (both with $27 million), and Garland’s own Ex Machina , which concluded its domestic run with $25 million. The acclaimed filmmaker now has two movies on A24’s all-time top 10 list . Global numbers for Civil War are a little sketchy, with A24 having sold overseas distribution rights to local companies. But a Variety report from last week put the film’s global haul at around $70 million, which means that it is, at the very least, among the top 5 highest-grossing A24 films on the global chart .

'Civil War' Ushers A24 Into a New Era of Big-Budget Cinema

The indie studio is looking to level up after a decade producing some of the most acclaimed small-budget genre movies of recent times . In these 10 years, A24 has also earned a tremendous amount of brand recognition , which certainly played a major role in facilitating Civil War ’s record opening of $25 million — nearly twice as high as the previous record-holder Hereditary ’s $13 million debut. This is a notable pivot, considering A24 won Oscars in all six major categories just two years ago, when Everything Everywhere All at Once won Best Picture plus five acting Oscars, and The Whale picked up Best Actor for Brendan Fraser . The studio will soon be turning Hideo Kojima ’s “Death Stranding” video game into a live-action film.

Reviews for Civil War have been mostly solid . The movie earned a B- CinemaScore, and currently sits at a “fresh” 81% approval rating on the aggregator platform Rotten Tomatoes . In his review, Collider’s Matthew Donato called it Garland’s “best film,” and praised Kirsten Duns t’s lead performance as the desensitized photographer Lee Smith. Civil War also stars Wagner Moura , Cailee Spaeny , Stephen McKinley Henderson , and Jesse Plemons in a scene-stealing cameo. You can watch the film in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.

Civil War 2024 Movie Blu-ray Release Date Announced: When Will It Start Streaming?

Cailee Spaeny as Jessie Cullen in Civil War movie, Statue of Liberty

The official Blu-ray release date for A24's Civil War will give fans a better idea of when the dystopian film will begin streaming.

Civil War , written and directed by Alex Garland, follows a group of journalists embarking on a journey across the United States amidst a modern civil war.

Starring Kristen Dunst, Wagner Moura, and Cailee Spaeny, A24's latest film is already the fifth-highest-grossing film in studio history. This made many believe the film's projected digital and streaming releases would be slightly delayed .

However, the latest post-theater Civil War update will help narrow down its release online.

Official Civil War Blu-ray Release Date

Civil War 2024 movie still

According to When To Stream , the Civil War Blu-ray will be available on July 9, 88 days after opening in theaters.

The outlet also predicts Civil War 's digital release online to arrive sometime during the end of May. This aligns with When To Stream's previous expectation of A24 waiting at least 45 days until shifting to digital.

If Civil War were to hit online markets after 45 days, that would bring its digital release to Monday, May 27.

Comparatively, A24's Priscilla became available online 49 days after hitting theaters and The Iron Claw was released digitally 53 days after opening.

Keeping that in mind, it's easy to assume that if Civil War isn't available to watch online in May, it's expected to be by early June at the latest.

When Will Civil War Begin Streaming on Max?

After its impending digital release, Civil War is set to arrive on Max thanks to A24's recent agreement with the streaming platform.

However, the exact timing remains uncertain, but the new Blu-ray release and A24's past release patterns offer some insights.

For example, Priscilla began streaming on Max 119 days after opening in theaters.

Similarly, The Zone of Interest appeared on Max 112 days after its theatrical release while The Iron Claw is joining the streamer on May 10, 140 after hitting the silver screen.

Another potential clue to hone in on Civil War 's streaming premiere is The Iron Claw will be added to Max 45 days after its physical release.

The most likely streaming release date for Civil War is Friday, August 23. This would be 45 days after its physical release and 133 days after hitting theaters, which is similar to recent A24 release strategies.

In general, fans can expect Civil War to be available for no extra cost on Max sometime in August or July.

For now, Civil War is still playing in theaters.
