5-Day Devon & Cornwall Small Group from London Tour

5-Day Devon & Cornwall Small Group from London

This was the first multi-day tour I have taken. I have always been concerned about being locked in to an itinerary with a large group of strangers and the loss of liberty etc. I was happy with the way this tour turned out - smallish group, being left to tour stops on your own, and mostly interesting stops (I would replace Tavistock with something else in Devon - say Torquay perhaps - but I realize there are logistical constraints as well). I think Samuel did an excellent job - he was able to set a playful mood, articulate relevant historical information and keep things running smoothly. One suggestion: the bus should have wifi.

London Explorer (8 Days) Tour

London Explorer (8 Days)

Great way to see it all in one week. A little fast paced for some of the elders in our group. Hotel location was fabulous and hotel food was great, but the hotel is in desperate need of updating and maintenance. Overall a very good tour.

3-Day Stonehenge, Glastonbury, Bath & the South West Coast Small-Group Tour from London Tour

3-Day Stonehenge, Glastonbury, Bath & the South West Coast Small-Group Tour from London

We had a small group of 8 which made plenty of room and seating options on the bus. We were late getting away because two were stuck in traffic and two were making their way from the airport and unfortunately it put us against the clock the entire first day. Every stop was hurried, so I know I have to return to be able to spend proper time in some of the stops along the way, but it was a wonderful tapas tour with sampling’s of all the culture and sites along the way. Wit a small group, we were also able to make good friends and share meals together as well as interact with the tour driver, Helen. The countryside is heaven, lush greens and flowers in bloom. Dartmoor ponies everywhere, fat sheep, and shaggy cows along the way. Not enough time to scale Glastonbury Tor or make your way to the bottom of Durdle Door, but lots of picture sites and things to experience, plus a little bit of hiking if chosen. Stonehenge is worth the 24

Best of Devon and Cornwall (6 Days) Tour

Best of Devon and Cornwall (6 Days)

The only reason I didn’t give excellent overall was 3 of us were put in an Uber to be taken back to the Reception Centre ( an Uber who didn’t seem to know where to drop us - so we needed to trudge with our luggage a bit of a way ) and that made us feel a little flat as we started the tour at the Reception Centre and that’s why we booked a Hotel next door. We all were left feeling a little disappointed after a great tour. We could understand the practical side but we were disappointed that we didn’t get delivered to the startng point in our coach.

I absolutely loved the tour. The sights, hotels, and food provided was great. It was well organized. There is a lot of walking. The tours are great fun with loads of laughing. David, the tour guide is very down to earth and accommodating. You will definitely be happy booking Dacey's tours.

Hoped that the extra excursions would be available at a better price through Globus than we could get on our own, or that transportation would be provided to most of them. I found better deals online and had to use the tube to get around...a lot! The 2 days we went outside of London with the group were ok.

2-Day Windsor, Stonehenge, Bath & Oxford Small-Group Tour from London

The tour takes you to some great places that are all worth seeing. We liked pretty much everything we saw: the Stonehenge, Roman Baths and Bodlian library. Definitely, make sure that you have all necessary reservations in advance as many entries are timed. This is especially important during the high season. Unfortunately, we missed the Windsor castle because I didn't have a reservation ahead of time.

What people love about england tours from london.

We thoroughly enjoyed our Devon and Cornwall tour with Jack. Jack is extremely knowledgeable about the area, so engaging with a lot of humour and an excellent driver! We would love to join another tour on our next visit to the UK.
Overall, it was a fantastic experience. There were a couple of small hiccups, nothing is perfect, but our guide and our driver did a fantastic job of making the experience fun and meaningful. The only thing I would flag is that the group size is a bit large - we were 46 - which can sometimes make for slower travel. Otherwise, absolutely wonderful!
We had a wonderful time! Our tour guide, Kate, was knowledgeable and accommodating for all of our interests and needs. I would highly recommend this trip.

Departure Points

Map of departure point from London Eye

London Eye.

All day tours from London start here…

Our Stonehenge & Bath and Oxford, Stratford & Cotswolds tours have a second departure point too.

A minute’s walk from the London Eye, we depart from Belvedere Road, by the corner of Belvedere Road and Chicheley Street, Waterloo .

Things to look out for:

  • The London Eye - a huge ferris wheel on the south bank of the River Thames
  • Jubilee Gardens - the park in front of the London Eye. Belvedere Road is in front of the park

This departure point is a 5 minute walk from Waterloo station, and 10 minutes walk from Westminster Station and Embankment Station.

Arriving by taxi

There are thousands of taxis in London, available 24 hours a day

Taking a London cab (black cab) that you can hail on the street, tell the taxi driver that you need to go to the corner of Belvedere Road and Chicheley Street, near the London Eye. In an Uber, or other pre-booked cab through a company like Addison Lee, use the postcode SE1 7PY, which will take you to the top of Chicheley Street. Just walk down towards the London Eye, until you meet the corner of Belvedere Road and Chicheley Street and you have found the departure point.

Arriving by train/tube to Waterloo station

Waterloo station is serviced by the Bakerloo, Northern, Jubilee and Waterloo & City lines of the tube, and mainline rail services. The simplest way is to leave the main concourse of the station via exit 5, and turn left. Cross the main road (York Road) in front of you, heading under the blue railway bridge. Turn left onto Belvedere Road, walking towards the London Eye, and keep going until you reach the corner of Belvedere Road and Chicheley Street.

Where is the guide?

The bus and your guide will usually arrive 5 – 10 minutes before the departure time so please don’t worry if you are early and we are not there! There are toilets in Waterloo Station (30p entry fee) and there are a few coffee shops in the area, should you be early and wish to get a drink/breakfast. Look for a small white Mercedes bus that has “The English Bus” written all over it.

Arriving on foot

If you fancy getting up and about early, and you are staying not far from Southbank, what could be better than a morning stroll to the departure point? The London Eye departure point is located between Westminster Bridge and the Golden Jubilee Bridges. Once you reach the London Eye, head away from the river, through Jubilee Gardens, and you will reach Belvedere Road, where the departure point is.

Map of departure point from Victoria

Our Bath & Stonehenge tour from London and our Oxford tour also depart from here.

As an alternative to our London Eye departure point, our second pickup on our Stonehenge & Bath tour and our Oxford, Stratford & Cotswolds tour from London is a 2 minute walk from exit 1 of the main concourse of Victoria Station.

We depart from outside the Double Tree by Hilton London VICTORIA hotel at 2 Bridge Place .

Please be waiting immediately outside the hotel for pickup - we will not be able to go inside to collect you, we will stop as close to the hotel as we can. Look out for a small white Mercedes bus that says “The English Bus” all over it.

As this is our 2nd pick up - if the traffic is unusually heavy there is a chance we may be a few minutes late - please be patient and look out for us.

Taking a London cab (black cab) that you can hail on the street, tell the taxi driver that you need to go to Double Tree by Hilton London VICTORIA. Please make sure they are taking you to the Victoria hotel, as there are a number of Double Tree by Hiltons in central London. In an Uber, or other pre-booked cab through a company like Addison Lee, use the postcode SW1V 1QA, which will take you right outside the hotel. Just wait there for us to collect you.

Arriving by train to Victoria station

Victoria train station is serviced by the Circle, District and Victoria lines of the tube, and mainline rail services. If you have arrived by tube, head up into the mainline station concourse. Exit the main concourse via exit 1 and turn right. Walk for 1 minute onto Bridge Place, and you’ll see the Double Tree by Hilton Victoria hotel on your left.

Where is the bus/guide?

We will be coming from our first pickup and depending on traffic may arrive slightly early, bang on time, or a couple of minutes late. Please be ready and waiting outside the hotel, and look for a small white Mercedes bus that has “The English Bus” written all over it.

The hotel is on Bridge Place, a road that runs down the south east side of Victoria station. If you are staying in the Victoria, Pimlico or Westminster area (or even further afield), you might like a stroll to meet us in the morning. Click the link above for Google maps and to check directions.

Cornwall: a brief history

T he name Cornwall derives from the Celtic word ‘Kernow’ which loosely translates as ‘horn people’. This is a reference to the shape and geographic location of the region, as it j uts out into the Atlantic on the south-western edge of Britain. There is evidence of human occupation here dating back 10,000 years, with the first significant monuments and settlements appearing in the Neolithic age. The area’s importance grew further during the Bronze Age, as the landscape was discovered to be abundant in two highly valuable metals: copper and tin.

Following the departure of the Romans from Britain in the 5 th century, Cornwall became a safe haven for the original British occupants, referred to as Celts, who sought refuge to the west to escape the invading Saxons. A separate society was then established; one which resisted the Saxons for several centuries. Battles ensued through until the mid-900’s when the Saxon-Wessex King Athelstan, grandson of King Alfred the Great, set the border of Cornwall along the River Tamar, creating an official separation from England.

The Middle Ages saw continued turbulence in Cornwall. During this period there was a gradual decline in the native language and the Cornish identity overall. It was a time of great rebellion among Cornish people, following oppression from England. But from the 18th century, Cornwall prospered with the industrial revolution. Pilchard fishing was Cornwall’s signature, with stocks exported all over Europe, and tin mining made some parts of Cornwall among the wealthiest areas in the world at the industry’s peak. It was during these times that Cornwall also became a hot-spot for smugglers.

Things to do in Cornwall

Kernow a’gas dynnergh, meaning ‘Welcome to Cornwall’, are the words that greet any visitor crossing over the river Tamar from neighbouring Devon. Cornwall is a special region ; p ossessing it’s own history, traditions, foods and even its own language. This is also a land of stories, myths and legends. From th at of King Arthur, whose legend suggests Tintagel Castle to be his birthplace. To the iconic site of St Michael’s Mount; a 12th century monastery built on an island that was at one point said to be the home of a giant.

For many, Cornwall is r ecognisable for featuring on-screen. The TV series Poldark tells the story of a local man who returns to Cornwall from the American Revolutionary War to a very different life than the one he left. A variety of locations feature, including the historic port of Charlestown, and the stunning beach at Porthcurno. Another well-loved Cornwall-based TV series is Doc Martin. Set in the picturesque fishing village of Port Isaac, the story follows the life of a blunt and grumpy local Doctor, and his often humorous dealings with the quirky local villagers.

Throughout Cornwall you’ll find a special combination of beautiful coastline and charming towns. Travel along the Tin Coast road; one of the most scenic drives in Britain and absorb a mix of rough moorland and rugged clifftop scenery. B e sure not to miss seaside destinations like St Ives; once a h ive of fishing and now a centre of the arts movement. Or Falmouth; a n authentic and historic town that is  home to one of the deepest natural harbours in the world. And of course, no visit to Cornwall is complete without sampling the famous local delicacy ; a Cornish pasty.
