cruise egypt israel jordan

To discover ancient civilisations

From Egypt to Jordan by way of Israel, the countries surrounding the Red Sea are rich in history and perfectly preserved monuments . The pyramids and the Sphinx of Giza, the temples of Karnak and Luxor, and the treasures on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo all bear witness to the splendours of the Pharaonic era . The traces left by the Romans let travellers follow in the footsteps of this legendary Empire. As for Petra, it is a testament to the power and refinement of the Nabataeans.

To enjoy a moment of relaxation

In the two northern gulfs of the Red Sea, the resorts of Ain Sokhna , Egypt, and Eilat , Israel, offer travellers a relaxed atmosphere and large sandy beaches. Thanks to their calm waters, these destinations are ideal for swimming or nautical activities such as kayaking and pedalo outings. The salt water baths of the Dead Sea are a great spot to recharge your batteries.

For navigation and engineering enthusiasts, sailing the Suez Canal is a unique opportunity to sit back and take in your surroundings.

To swim through rich waters

Scuba diving and snorkelling are popular activities in the coastal towns surrounding the Red Sea, from Eilat and Aqaba to Hurghada and Safaga. The waters are home to many varieties of coral, moray eels, reef sharks, and parrotfish. If you're lucky, you might even spot a pod of dolphins or a few hammerhead sharks. Come on in, the water's lovely!

Sail the Suez Canal - Egypt

A monumental feat of engineering, the Suez Canal measures over 200 kilometres, connecting the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. A cherished dream since ancient times, this waterway was first proposed by the pharaohs back in the 13th century BC. However, it was under the leadership of Frenchman Ferdinand de Lesseps that these plans finally came to fruition in 1869. The Suez Canal is a passage between two continents and two civilisations: a truly unique nautical adventure.

Discover Ancient Egypt

The powerful civilisation of ancient Egypt dominated the region for several millennia, and many of its most splendid monuments can still be seen today. In Giza, the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure have stood as a testament to the pharaohs for around 5,000 years. Keeping guard over the pyramids, the imposing figure of the Sphinx sits 73.5 metres tall. Nearby, the Egyptian Museum boasts the largest collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities, including the magnificent treasure of Tutankhamun .

Swim in the Dead Sea - Israel

Enjoy a swim like no other! known for its high concentration of salt, the Dead Sea is one of Israel's must-visit destinations. Thanks to the water's mineral content, a dip in the sea can offer a range of therapeutic benefits. Its salinity will also keep you bobbing on the surface.

Visit the Masada fortress - Israel

The Masada fortress towers over the Judean Desert , perched on cliffs ranging from 100-450 metres in height. As it is nearly impossible to access on foot, visitors can take a cable car to explore the sanctuary that sheltered many Jewish families from 66 to 70 BC during the reign of Herod. Now classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the ruins of the palace with its mosaics and columns, the imposing walls, the synagogue, the baths and the water cisterns all reflect the ingenuity and beauty of the area and its people.

Take in the magic of Petra - Jordan

At the bend of a gorge, surrounded by the rocky walls of the Jabal al-Khubtha massif, lies the ancient city of Petra . Dug into the rock itself—in varying shades of ochre and red—the tombs, theatre, walls, gardens, temples, and monuments symbolise the city's importance during the reign of the Nabataeans, around the sixth century BC. Built on the main caravan route , Petra is located at the crossroads between East and West. Incense, spices, silk, precious stones, and medicinal plants all passed through this bustling city. However, Petra's importance decreased over the centuries, and the city eventually fell into oblivion before being rediscovered in 1812.

In this affluent and prestigious city-center district, you’ll check in to our sophisticated 5-star hotel, the Kempinski Nile . Settle in to your Nile-view guestroom and enjoy the rest of this day to rest or explore as you wish.

The Age of the Pharaohs

With their penetrating insights and informative narration, our expert Egyptologists will plumb the mysteries of the Pharaohs and bring their ancient world to life. This exciting day of sightseeing begins with the Great Pyramids c that have stood for millennia on the Giza Plateau. Then behold the watchful gaze of the Sphinx, which 20th-century scholarship has determined to be even older than the Pyramids. Next up is a camel ride across the desert sands – an experience that is as fun as it is unforgettable! We’ll take a break from sightseeing to enjoy lunch at the historic Mena House and then continue to ancient Memphis c . Highlighting our afternoon sightseeing are the Colossus of Rameses II, on display in a dedicated museum, and the beautiful Alabaster Sphinx. Continuing to Sakkara, we’ll marvel at the monumental Step Pyramid of King Zoser, the oldest standing stone structure in all of Egypt. Just recently opened to visitors for the first time in 80 years, the 4,000-year-old Tomb of Mehu will impress you with its vibrant drawings and inscriptions. Back at our luxury hotel in Cairo, you’ll have time to refresh before dining on your own. Before taking your leave for the day, our in-the-know Egyptologist guide will be happy to offer some restaurant suggestions. Meals B+L

From the Citadel to the Egyptian Museum

After breakfast, our engaging Egyptologist will again be waiting to continue your journey into antiquity. First up is the Citadel, a medieval hilltop fortification that offers panoramic views of Cairo. You’ll also admire the impressive Muhammad Ali Mosque, commissioned in the mid-19th century by Muhammad Ali Pasha. With its graceful, soaring minarets and strategic location atop the citadel, it can be seen from many other parts of the capital. Then continue for an unhurried guided tour of the renowned Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. The knowledge and insights you gain here are the perfect introduction to the many temples and places you’ll visit during your upcoming Nile voyage. After lunch, our afternoon program continues with a 1-hour walking tour through the lively streets of Old Cairo c . You’ll stop to visit one of the city’s oldest churches and have time to explore the bustling Khan El Khalili Bazaar. With a rich history dating back more than 500 years, this lively market is filled with colorful merchant stalls offering a bewildering array of goods from gold, spices and rugs to textiles, stained-glass lanterns, incense and copperware. Returning to our boutique hotel along the Nile, the evening is free to enjoy and dine as you wish. Meals B+L

Welcome Aboard Historia

Historia Nile Cruiser

After a final buffet breakfast at the hotel, we’ll take you to the airport for your included flight to Luxor, set along the banks of the Nile about 300 miles upriver from Cairo. On arrival, you’ll be met and escorted to our private pier to embark our elegant, boutique ship. After lunch onboard, our included afternoon shore excursion program showcases two of Egypt’s most celebrated sites of antiquity. Accompanied as always by our engaging Egyptologist, your first visit will be Karnak Temple c . Dating back to around 2,000 B.C., this large religious complex encompasses massive pillars and the remarkable Hypostyle Hall, the largest of any temple hall in the world. Connected to Karnak by the amazing nearly 2-mile long Avenue of the Sphinxes is Luxor Temple c ; about 600 years newer than Karnak, the temple walls of Luxor are embellished with fine carvings including ancient Egyptian deities accompanied by a procession of priests, musicians and dancers. Enhanced by the deep knowledge of our Egyptologists, your exploration of both Karnak and Luxor offer a penetrating look into Egypt’s ancient culture and beliefs. Back onboard Historia , enjoy a welcome cocktail reception and your first dinner in the bright and airy Noria Restaurant . Meals B+L+D

The Valley of the Kings and Queens c

With our private docking facilities along the river, you’ll step off ship easily and comfortably this morning—apart from the cluster of other ships and their passengers. Accompanied by our expert Egyptologists, your exploration along the Nile’s West Bank begins in the storied Valley of the Kings where, to date, more than 60 Pharaonic tombs have been discovered. There are also a number of important temples in the Valley including Medinet Habu, notable for its size, architecture and relief carvings depicting military conquests during the reign of Ramses III. Standing like guards along the road to the Valley of Kings, you’ll marvel at the Colossi of Memnon, impressive statues of Amenhotep III that tower 75 feet above the desert sands. You’ll also spend time this morning in the nearby Valley of the Queens and at the Mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut. This latter site is truly spectacular, built in a natural amphitheater set against the mountains and partially hollowed out of the rocks. Return to ship at midday in time for lunch and a leisurely afternoon of cruising as Historia navigates upriver towards Esna. Enjoy the passing scenery and sunset snacks before sitting down to another a la carte dinner onboard. Meals B+L+D

Edfu + Kom Ombo

After a leisurely buffet breakfast, you’ll go ashore this morning in the historical town of Edfu to visit the Temple of Horus. Built of enormous sandstone blocks between 237 and 57BC, archaeologists and scholars consider this to be the best-preserved cult temple in all of Egypt. It is also the second largest temple after Karnak and according to myth and legend is built upon the site where Horus, the revered falcon-headed god, fought a battle with his murderous uncle Seth in a quarrel over who was the legitimate divinely appointed ruler of Egypt. With the insightful interpretation of our Egyptologist, the temple’s captivating inscriptions and relief carvings will come to life. Enjoy lunch back onboard as our ship continues to navigate upriver. In the afternoon, you’ll explore the distinctive Temple of Kom Ombo. Built during the Ptolemaic Period and situated on a picturesque bend in the Nile, Kom Ombo’s uniqueness lies in its symmetrical construction, with duplicate halls, rooms, courts and sanctuaries on both sides of the east/west axis. The north side was dedicated to the sky god Haroeris while the identical southern half of this dual-deity temple honored Sobek, the crocodile god. Return to ship in time for Afternoon Tea, followed by dinner and this evening’s cultural entertainment. Meals B+L+D

Temple of Philae + Felucca Excursion

Once again taking advantage of our ship’s private docking facilities, you’ll go ashore after breakfast this morning to visit the remarkable Unfinished Obelisk of Queen Hatshepsut. Still attached to the bedrock in a stone quarry, it was abandoned more than 3,500 years ago when cracks appeared in the granite. If it had been completed, it would have weighed over 1,000 tons and stood nearly 138 feet tall, one-third larger than any other known Egyptian obelisk. It’s a fascinating site that offers insight into the remarkable stone-working techniques of ancient Egypt. Before returning to ship, you’ll also visit the Temple of Philae c . Rescued from rising waters after the completion of the High Dam in 1970, this small but lovely temple was built around 370 BC and dedicated to Isis, the beloved Goddess of Life, Healing and Protection. After lunch onboard, your final excursion finds you aboard a felucca, the ancient sailing craft of the Nile. Sit back and enjoy the vistas as we take you around El Nabatat Island. Also known as Kitchener’s Island, this small oval-shaped island was granted to Lord Kitchener when he served as Consul General in Egypt. Making the island his home, Kitchener turned it into a lush tropical paradise with exotic trees and flowers, many of them imported from India. Back onboard Historia , enjoy your final a la carte dinner in the Noria Restaurant and some shipboard entertainment. Meals B+L+D

The Temples of Abu Simbel c

Le Meridien Airport Hotel - Cairo, Egypt

After breakfast and disembarkation, you’ll be escorted to the airport for your included flight to Abu Simbel. With our engaging Egyptologists once again leading the way, you’ll discover one of the world’s most impressive and oft-photographed sights of antiquity. Towering nearly 70 feet, the rock-carved figures of Ramses II are themselves a marvel of planning and execution. Equally fascinating is the much more modern story of how they were rescued from the rising waters of the Aswan Dam and moved 200 feet above their original site. The execution of this massive project was so meticulous that twice a year, on February 22 and October 22, the rays of the rising sun penetrate into the very heart of the temple just 24 hours later than the original plan! After sightseeing, we include your flight back to Cairo where you will spend the night at our 5-star hotel, conveniently located close to the airport. Meals B

Fly to Amman, Jordan

W Hotel - Amman, Jordan

After breakfast, it’s a short transfer back to the airport for your included flight to Jordan. Upon arrival in Amman, you’ll be warmly greeted and escorted to our stylish hotel in the heart of the capital. The rest of this day is yours to enjoy as you wish. Meals B

Then continue your journey along the fabled King’s Highway, traveling southward along this once-vital ancient trade route to Madaba where you’ll visit St. George Church. From the outside, this 19th-century Greek Orthodox Church presents a fairly unassuming façade. But inside, you’ll behold an historic treasure that was discovered in 1884 during the Church’s construction. Now on display for visitors, this amazing 1,500-year-old mosaic depicts Biblical sights all across the Middle East. Indeed, this is the oldest known map of the Holy Land! Enjoy a traditional midday meal, home cooked and attentively served in a restored century-old residence, before ascending Mt. Nebo, the traditional burial site of Moses. Take in the panoramic views of the Jordan Valley and see a remarkable Franciscan structure that was built to protect the remains of a 4th-century Byzantine church. Continue your journey along the King’s Highway to Petra where you’ll check in to your Junior Suite at the Mövenpick Hotel . Later this evening, delight in a hands-on culinary experience at the Petra Kitchen. Working alongside friendly local villagers under the guiding eye of a skilled chef, you’ll prepare a variety of traditional Jordanian dishes. It’s a friendly, fun and enriching way to experience local life and culture. Of course, you’ll sit down with your fellow travelers to enjoy the dishes you’ve helped to prepare! Meals B+L+D

Venturing forth in comfortable 4-wheel drive vehicles with our expert drivers, you’ll explore this forbiddingly remote region where rugged mountains of sandstone and granite rise sheer sided from the desert floor to reach spectacular heights of 4,000 feet and more. Stopping at the entrance to Khazali Canyon, you’ll enjoy a guided 20-minute hike into the canyon to admire its stunning rock formations and to see ancient Nabataean inscriptions and drawings. Then join a local family for a traditional Bedouin lunch before returning to Amman for another night at the W Hotel . Meals B+L

I will regret to have made this cruise with Booking-tours for life. They have ruined our family holidays, this one has been the worse trip in our lives 1. When I booked the cruise from Aswan to Luxor they informed that our boat was Coral 2, receiving pics of it, So I agreed to book it. Surprisingly, just few days before shipping, they told us that the vessel was changed to M/s Prince Omar without sending pics or basic information 2. Someone was supposed to meet us in Cairo Airport to help with our trip arrangements but nobody showed up 3. Landing in Aswan, nobody was at the terminal to receive us as expected. Only after leaving the terminal, a guy approached us saying that he will be our guide but no credentials as Egyptologist and no relationship with Booking Tours 4. We told this guy that we want to go to the vessel for lunch and view but he told us that he was in a hurry because he had to assist other group, so he rushed us to the Aswan Damm and to Philae temple. Everything on the run, no meal, no time for anythingt, just running from place to place in empty stomachs. 5. Finally he joined us with his group proposing us to sail together in the falucas and continue to Nubios village. We accepted, but our surprise came when we had to pay him USD 75 for the excursion. Unbelievable 6. When we were dropped at the M/s Prince Omar we only wanted to cry. That boat is old, bad maintained, smelly, dirty and thousands of bad things more. I told the guide (Mohamed) that we couldn’t accept to stay in that boat since didn’t meet the requirements what we booked for. I requested him to call Booking Tours to change us to other boat but he did nothing, so I started communicating with Booking Tours but the response was nule. 7. I complained to the boat manager about the quality of the accommodation and he allocated us in a room with double-bed, but without space for our kids. I told him that we needed at least one more bed for our 15 years old kid and the solution given was to bring a chase-long from the swimming pool to accommodate him. We could't sleep The cabin was dirty, dirty linen and towels, leaks in the bathroom, small black worms in the floor, TV set not working. The smell and dust of the cabin was so terrible that my daughter got sick. With regards to the food there is only one adjective for it, inedible!!!! To sum up, we’d never have booked that boat and we’d have cancelled our cruise if we had known the look of M/s Prince Omar. Furthermore, the tour guide told us that the Tour Operator had change the vessel from Coral 2 to Prince Omar because Coral 2 was in Luxor. Another lie upon lie, since the Coral 2 was tied up in our same dock just three tiers ahead and we met it again before going through the canal. 8. 30th December, we only arrived to Kom Ombo with night light. Again, everything on the rush. That is supposed to have a function in the boat during the night, but we didn't. 9. 31st December. Early morning we visited Edfu, again running like headless chickens, to get back to the boat and sail to Luxor what we only reached by 10:30 pm. Night entertainment to celebrate the new year was scheduled, but never happened and that is not acceptable. No satisfactory response was given to my complaints. 11. On the 1st January, a different guide fetched us to show us Valley of the Kings, East Bank and Karnak. Everything in only 4 hours. Unbelievable. Finally, we requested her to accompany us to the airport terminal but she refused arguing that she was not allowed to go in. We feel completely cheated, paying for something with no value for the money paid. They decided unilaterally to change the boat without giving us a similar vessel in terms of quality or even a better one. They altered the schedule without any reason neither explanation. And they promised experiences that they didn't fulfil. This trip was insane and the worse experience in our lives. Read more Written January 19, 2024
  • guillermogN6775HD 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Deception Too expensive and time consuming for being 3 hours in site. You are able to see just a small portion of Petra.as stated in the The tour withTrip advisor was more expensive than with other companies. Specially when we crossed customs. There is guy collecting money from travelers that bought the tour with different companies. He has a list and collects the visa and crossing fees. While most of the travelers paid $75 per person, I was charged $140 per person - I was amazed and very mad at Trip Advisor. I thought they were being fair, but it wasn't. The guy told me that different companies have different agreements. The worst part is the first stop for services - a tourist trap store just outside of Petra. Beautiful view, but NEVER BUY ANYTHING THERE. There are no prices on the products and they quote in jordanian currency. When you ask for the rate they tell you it is slightly higher than a Dollar. We chose to buy a small brass camel and a lamp - shoulf have cost 10-15 dollars in any market. they charged me $126.00. No way to complain, you will never be back in that store. • parisca 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Travelers Beware TRAVELERS BEWARE. SAFETY CONCERNS AND COMMUNICATION ARE NON-EXISTENT WITH THIS COMPANY. I have been to over 60 countries and Booking Tours is the absolutely worst company I have ever traveled with. We hired Booking Tours, because as two women traveling in the Middle East, we were concerned about safety. They took us off a bus from Petra to Wadi Rum and handed us off to two men with no identification in a minivan (that broke down) in the middle of the desert. Fortunately we made it to the campsite, but are confident most women would feel very uncomfortable in this situation. The following day, we were left at the camp with no information about when we would be picked up or who would pick us up other than “transfer”. You might be thinking, “why didn’t you ask”? Of course we did! However, they did not provide any contact information for the drivers and we were told that they don’t use What’s App and they don’t monitor chat boards outside regular business hours. Our hotel tried to call the generic number for us, no answer. When they finally responded on the chat board, all they said was “it is on your itinerary”. No, it was not or we wouldn’t be asking. We purchased a flight upgrade to replace a 10 hr drive. The flight upgrade did not, in fact, get us to our destination any earlier. In fact, we drove over 3 hours (when there was an actual airport at the border) and sat at the airport for 5 1/2 hours as we watched flight after flight depart for Cairo. The flight upgrade bought us the cheapest flight out that night that got us to the hotel AFTER when the 10 hour drive would have arrived. They gave us the incorrect flight info on the itinerary, and when we asked them about it, they said it was correct. It was not. When we inquired about how this was an upgrade they said they did not say we would get there any sooner with the flight, which is true. However, most people would assume a flight upgrade would also mean an earlier arrival. When we arrived at our hotel in Egypt at 1:30am, there were no towels and no toilet paper and no plugs that would work to charge our devices. In this case they did move us to a different hotel, but only because we walked out and refused to go back. However, their response was that the pictures of the hotel online showed outlets. Seriously? And these are just a few of the issues we had with them. Time after time, they refused to acknowledge any problems with any of their reservations, itinerary, or inability to contact anyone for help. If you choose to book with them, I hope everything goes exactly as planned for you. Should you have a question, be sure you ask during business hours. If you use What’s App, just know they do not. If you run into any problems at all, know they WILL NOT believe you or acknowledge fault or wrong doing for anything and WILL NOT work with you to resolve any issues. Before we wrote this review, we have been going back and forth with them for 5 weeks to give them the opportunity to make this right. Their response? They did nothing wrong. Their customer service is truly the worst I have ever experienced. Booking tours is not available to help you. Booking Tours does not care about your experience. Wadi Rum was very scenic, camel ride at sunset was special and the dinner Buffett at Magic Rum was extra delish considering having to feed hundreds of people all at once!!! We took the Martian room for 2 and really enjoyed it. The next day at Petra was a trip to be remembered, lots of walking but sooooo worth it, the pathway to the Treasury and then that masterpiece, just fantastic❤️ Adnan our guide was knowledgeable friendly and kept us entertained, great job 👏 Shira & Manny Los Angeles Read more Written April 30, 2023

We booked this week's ago and I got a call from them 2 days ago, a week before we were going to say they couldn't fit us in. We paid about a month or longer ago and get the call while in Israel, in fact if we hadn't emailed them our Israeli phone number we would have gone and wasted our day. We booked for 9, they offered us 430, not possible on our tour. The woman said she didn't have our reservation until I read her the number. She blames TripAdvisor, I have used trip advisor before and never had an issue. No reviews for a reason... stay away, our day is ruined. Read more Written April 24, 2023
  • 821svent 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing Petra, tour operator left us on the street! Avoid! We book „one day tour to Petra“ from Aqaba, Jordan. Our hotel is close by car to the border of Israel, where the tour bus with a lot of tourists where coming from. A driver picked us up at the hotel an drove us to the border to get picked up from the tour guide with the bus. The whole tour was great, the guide was funny. Until we get back to the border to Aqaba. The tour guide told us that nobody knows how we get back to our hotel. No one there to pick us up from the border. Finally the bus driver took us in to the city. But was not happy about the little Detour. But then, without a comment he kicked us off on the street without getting us to the hotel. He didn’t speak English or didn’t want to speak or understand. He was very rude and unfriendly. Almost aggressive when we asked and bagged him to bring us to the hotel. End of story: we needed to walk over 2.2 km back to the hotel. It would be easy for him to drop us there. So I cannot recommend booking-Tours. The don’t fulfill there contracts and keep you safe. They take your money and kick you off the bus. Read more Written April 6, 2023
  • Art S 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles convenient trip to see peter in one day :) We went to Petra at the end of January. We were 3 adults from Eilat. The car picked us up from the Eilat hotel at the agreed time and took us to the border. The driver spoke English and explained how to cross the border. Then he said when you come back from the excursion I will take you back to the hotel. When we crossed the border into Israel, we were met by another person from the agency who collected the money for the border fees (when we booked the tour we had chosen to pay the customs fees in cash). Then we crossed the jordanian border and got on a big bus. We went to pick up tourists from Aqaba. Everything went quickly and smoothly. When all the tourists were on the bus, we headed towards Petra. The guide gave each a bottle of water. The guide spoke good English. He told a lot on the way to Petra. The views from the windows of the bus were amazing. There was a toilet stop near the Petra. When we arrived in Petra and got off the bus, the guide showed us the place where we will have lunch and what time we will finish walking around Petra. The time during the whole trip was calculated well, because there were tourists who had to catch the ferry in Aqaba after the excursion. Walking around Peter went at a good pace, we managed to take pictures and admire it. When walking petra, footwear should be sporty. We went forward with the group. then we were given free time to walk back to the place for lunch. Lunch was a buffet. The food is delicious. Drinks at extra cost. In the afternoon we went back to the border. We said goodbye to the guide at the border. When we were in Eilat, the driver took us back to the hotel. The excursion is not cheap, but it is worth the money :) Read more Written February 20, 2023

Our driver to border of Jordania and away from border was really nice and funny. Petra is place to see but waiting in border was waste of time, took 1,5 hours. No matter the company you hire in Israel, one bus take them all to the one bus to Petra. The guide in this bus, Fadi, was really nice and efficient. Petra was cold at this time of year, Feb, since it's in the mountains. Read more Written February 18, 2023
  • F1492SS 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience with some room for improvement The tour organizer put the wrong gender when making flight reservations for me so I had great difficulty checking in at the airport at 6am in the morning. There was no one I could contact to figure out why the airline couldn't find my reservation, though fortunately we figured it out in the end. Petra is definitely worth seeing and overall we got a great experience there. However, the tour was not well designed so we only had limited time there. This can be avoid had we stay overnight in Petra the night before or leave early around am rather 9am for it in the morning. Although we did enjoy the overnight stay in tents at Wadi Rum, there was simply too much rush the next day. For those travelers who'd like to take their time to enjoy Petra, this isn't the best option. You may go for the 3-day tour with 2 overnight stays but personally I think it's a bit too much. It'd be great if the tour organizers redesign the 2-day tour to allow 2-3 more hours in Petra for those who have limited time for the attraction. Read more Written January 28, 2023

Communication could have been better, I was a bit confused about the flights/pickups/etc, but everything worked as planned. Guide and all drivers were great. Day 1 Cairo

Salaam Alaikum! Welcome to Egypt. On arrival at the airport, make your way to your hotel located near the Pyramids of Giza.

A buzzing metropolis, home to at least 19 million people, Cairo gives you a great feel for Egyptian streetlife. It’s busy – almost frantic – and among the hustle and bustle, it’s an exciting blend of old world and new. Arabs call this city Umm al-Dunya (the mother of the world). There are many beautiful mosques to visit, like the Mohammed Ali Mosque in the Citadel. Or head to the oldest part of Cairo, the Babylon Fortress, to see ancient ruins. For stunning panoramic views of the capital, go up the 187-metre-high Cairo Tower.

Try some street food – lamb shawarma, anyone? – or get a taste of Egyptian street life by visiting a cafe. Sit in an ahwa and sip traditional mint tea. The shisha pipe can be found in many ahwas and restaurants across Cairo.

Day 2 Cairo

This morning, meet your guide and head out to see some of the world’s most iconic sights – the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. Explore these structures that have stood tall for some 4,500 years and learn about the ancient history of the monuments. The oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact, the pyramids are a sight to behold.

Afterwards, we visit the Egyptian Museum, home to one of the world's great collections of antiquities. Wander the treasure-filled halls of the museum, a highlight of which is the masses of gleaming artefacts recovered from the tomb of Tutankhamun.

Day 3 Cairo Luxor

Today, enjoy a free day at leisure.

Later this afternoon you'll be transferred to the airport to board your included flight to Luxor.

Join a local guide to get in touch with Cairo's Islamic heart. From backstreet bazaars to minaret-topped mosques, and neighbourhood coffee houses, these are the places that make Egypt's sprawling capital what it is. We will visit Sultan Hassan mosque and Madrasa, the finest piece of early Mamluk architecture in Cairo. It was built between 1356 and 1363 by Sultan Hassan then we will enjoy a walk in Moez street starting form Bab el Fetouh and we will end our Adventure in Khan El Khalili Bazaar. A labyrinth of narrow streets and passageways, Khan el-Khalili is one of the world’s largest bazaars and offers a truly authentic local Cairo experience.

Please note: the start and duration times outlined are subject to change based on factors beyond our control such as traffic and weather conditions. Your Tour Guide will confirm operation times with you whilst on-tour and can answer any further questions you may have.

Starts: 8:30am End: 3:30pm Inclusions: private transportation, private guide

Day 4 Luxor Embark on Nile Cruise

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel then we'll explore the magnificent Karnak Temple, which is perhaps the most impressive of all the ancient pharaohs' monumental works. One of the world's most celebrated temple complexes, Karnak was built over some 200 years and was once known as the 'Chosen of Places'. Your guided tour of this vast temple of impressive pylons, obelisks and chapels will reveal its finest sections, such as the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Great Temple of Amun.

Then it’s time to embark on your luxury Nile cruise that will be home for the next 4 nights. You’ll cruise between Luxor and Aswan on this elegant ship, with all the comforts you would expect from a 5-star floating hotel.

Please note that since the sailing distance between Luxor and Aswan is approximately 200kms, that it is typical for all cruises operated along the Nile to be docked for majority of the time to conduct sightseeing, with the sailing to occur of an evening. The vessel will be docked either in Luxor or Aswan. Depending on the time of year and number of vessels operating at the same time, you will also find that all vessels are docked beside one another, which is beyond our control.

To ensure that our customers have appropriate expectations prior to their journey, it is important not to compare this experience to that of a European River Cruise, which tend to cover a greater distance and on larger vessels. Instead, you will experience a Deluxe stay on-board your vessel, offering a great chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the banks of the Nile while you sit back and relax. Your cruise schedule will be provided once on-board.

Situated on the East Bank of the Nile River, in the city of Luxor, Luxor Temple was built approximately 1400 BC. The site is over 73 sq km and exhibits obelisks, giant statues, an Avenue of Sphinx statues, the Grand colonnade and the Barque Shrine of Theban Triad. Viewing is as majestic at night as it is during the day.

Start: 4:00pm End: 6:00pm Inclusions: return transfers to temple, entrance into Luxor Temple

Day 5 Luxor Valley of the Kings Luxor Edfu

Today we'll discover some of the many wonders of ancient Thebes. Our first stop is the Colossi of Memnon – two 17-metre-high statues on Luxor's west bank. Carved from granite blocks, they represent the Pharaoh Amenhotep III and were once part of an impressive colonnade.

Continue on to the spectacular royal burial site of the Valley of the Kings. Buried under the arid hills here are the tombs of more than 60 pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. Explore this sprawling and spectacular place with your guide, where the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (16th to 11th century BCE) were secretly interred for all eternity, and where archaeological discoveries are still being made. Your guide will explain the history of and legends surrounding these remarkable people, their funerary rites, and the significance of the many paintings and hieroglyphics, still well-preserved in the deepest tombs.

After paying a visit to three of the most interesting royal tombs we'll continue to the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, a stunning colonnaded building of sharp lines that contrasts beautifully against the craggy high cliffs behind it, creating a spectacular natural amphitheatre. One of Egypt’s greatest queens, this temple was built to prove her importance among the ancestors.

Enjoy lunch upon your return to the boat. There is time to relax on deck, or in your cabin, before we set sail for Edfu. Generally the journey from Luxor to Edfu takes place between 1pm an 11 pm, though the departure time may vary, depending on river traffic. En route to Edfu we pass through the Esna Lock and head upstream.

Edfu Temple Please note: The only mode of transport available to visit the Temple of Edfu is by locally managed horse and carriages. As a responsible travel-focused business, animal welfare is extremely important to us and we want to ensure that we are not promoting any activities where the working animals are not properly cared for. Unfortunately, some operators of the Horse and Carriages have been found to be in breach of our animal welfare guidelines and it is, for this reason, we will no longer include the visit to the Temple of Edfu.

In addition to the animal welfare concerns, we have had a substantial amount of feedback suggesting that the experience itself is quite uncomfortable due to the pushy nature of the vendors and local suppliers outside the site. While we recommend that you do not use the horse and carriage to visit the Temple, the decision is ultimately up to you. Edfu is an included port stop on the Nile River cruise schedule.

Day 6 Edfu Kom Ombo Aswan

Today we will moor near Edfu – home to ancient settlements and temples, as well as a bustling town centre and a bazaar.

Later we'll return to the boat where we’ll continue travelling upriver, with plenty of free time for relaxing on the sundeck and taking in the surrounding sights – from fishermen casting nets and farmers working their land to the desert hills that frame the lush riverbanks.

This afternoon we'll arrive at Kom Ombo Temple. Set dramatically on the bank of the Nile, 47 kilometres north of Aswan and 168 kilometres south of Luxor, the soaring, chunky columns of the double temple are a magnificent sight to behold as you arrive from the river.

Dedicated to the gods Sobek and Haroeris, the temple's finely carved reliefs give a sense of this area's prominence as capital over the surrounding region during the Ptolemaic era. Today, Kom Ombo may be a sleepy agricultural backwater surrounded by sugar cane fields, but its prime position along the Nile meant it was once one of Upper Egypt's most important centres. Wander through the temple's colonnades, gazing up at scenes of kingly propaganda, and you'll get a sense of this rich history for yourself.

Return to the cruise boat where you’ll continue travelling upriver towards Aswan.

Please note: the only mode of transport available to visit the Temple of Edfu is by locally managed horses and carriages. As a business that seeks to promote responsible travel, animal welfare is extremely important to us at Inspiring Vacations, and unfortunately, some operators of the horse and carriages have been found to be in breach of our animal welfare guidelines. It is for this reason we do not include the visit the Edfu Temple. While we recommend that you do not use the horse and carriage to visit the Temple, the decision is ultimately up to you and your guide can help arrange transport and ensure the best horses are used.

Day 7 Aswan Abu Simbel Aswan

Today you will awake before sunrise for an early morning start. Sit back and relax as you drive to the ancient Abu Simbel temples, near the southern Egyptian border. You will have an early arrival into Abu Simbel to view one of the most incredible sights you will see. The two enormous sandstone structures were built in the 1200s BCE by Ramses II to serve as lasting monuments to himself and his favourite wife Nefertari. The larger temple, dedicated to three major Egyptian deities, features four large statues of Ramses II on its façade, while the smaller temple is dedicated to the goddess of love, Hathor, with statues designed to embody Nefertari.

Set on the banks of the artificial Lake Nasser, the structures were once in danger of being flooded with the construction of the Aswan High Dam but were saved via an extensive project to cut the temples into pieces and move them to higher ground, where they are seen today.

On our return to Aswan the rest of the day is free for you to make your own discoveries.

This afternoon, we'll enjoy a sailboat ride around the Nile River islands in a traditional felucca (a small, traditional Egyptian sailboat).

Philae Temple is situated on an island just south of Aswan. It was built by the last dynasty of ancient Egypt, the Ptolemaic. The temple is dedicated to Isis - the goddess of healing, magic and birth, her husband Osiris and their son Horus.

Take a 20-minute drive from Aswan to the dock, where you will embark on a 20-minute boat ride to Agilkia Island, where the Philae Temple complex is located. You will have approximately 2 hours exploring the island and temple before returning to Aswan by boat and road vehicle.

Start: pending Cairo to Aswan flight  Duration: 3 hours Inclusions: return transportation (boat and road vehicle) from Aswan to Agilkia Island, entrance into Philae Temple complex

Day 8 Aswan Cairo

Today we will leave Aswan and make the short flight back to Cairo. On our return to Cairo enjoy your free time relaxing or doing some last-minute sightseeing.

Sit down for a home-cooked meal with a local family. During this experience, you'll get to visit a local family and learn about Middle Eastern traditions, Egyptian culture and tasty food but most importantly, enjoy a delicious and authentic home cooked meal.

Start: confirmed on tour Duration: 3 hours Inclusions: return transportation, home cooked meal

Day 9 Cairo Amman

Today, say goodbye to your Egyptian tour leader and get ready for the next leg of your journey as you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Amman, Jordan. Welcome to Jordan, cosmopolitan and contemporary, yet steeped in biblical history. On arrival at Amman's Queen Alia International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel. You will meet your Jordanian tour leader today.

Day 10 Amman Jerash Amman

After breakfast enjoy a tour of this capital city. Cosmopolitan and contemporary, yet steeped in ancient biblical history, Amman is a bit of a chameleon. Most of the city's historical sites are located downtown. Here we'll visit the Citadel, with remains from the Roman to the early Islamic period; the Jordan Archaeological Museum, which houses the oldest Neolithic statues dating from 8000 to 5000 NC, as well as other valuable artifacts; the souq, where we'll get an idea of everyday life; as well as the beautifully restored 2nd-century Roman Theatre.

Next we'll take a short drive (approximately one-hour) north to Jerash. Once one of the grandest ancient Roman cities in the world, Jerash now boasts some of the best Greco-Roman ruins around. Admire this site's striking collection of crumbling archways, theatres, baths, public buildings and colonnaded streets. Grand columns encircle the city's centrepiece, the Oval Plaza, a wonderfully atmospheric place to linger after exploring this ruined city's lasting riches.

Day 11 Amman Petra

Today marks the beginning of our journey towards the fabled site of Petra. En route we'll visit Madaba, an ancient market town that's home to a number of fine Byzantine mosaics, the most outstanding of which lies within Saint George's Greek Orthodox Church. Here, a map of the Holy Land once carpeted the whole floor, said to contain more than two million pieces. Crafted around 560 CE, a large swathe of this mosaic map can still be viewed, providing the oldest map of Palestine in existence.

Next we'll continue to the ancient village at Dana, on the edge of the Dana Biosphere Reserve, where local artisans sell silver jewellery.

Later, we'll drive along the King's Highway, up to Shobak Castle, sometimes known as Montreal. Perched at the top of a hill in the desert, this ancient Crusader castle was originally built to protect the eastern flank of the Latin Kingdom and its trade routes to the sea before it fell to Muslim sultan Saladin in 1189. Stroll the site and discover a small chapel, original gatehouse, and find out where a long, dark secret passage leads.

Day 12 Petra

Get ready for Petra! A firm fixture on most bucket lists for good reason – the jewel of Jordan is an arresting sight. The so-called Rose City boasts an impressive series of tombs, caves and temples hidden behind ornate façades carved directly into the rock. No one knows the exact date of this desert kingdom's creation, but the lost city of the Nabateans is believed to date as far back as the 2nd century CE. The city has lain empty and unknown for centuries, only rediscovered in 1812 by a Swiss explorer.

You'll feel just like Indiana Jones, as you meander through the narrow canyon known as the Siq; at times the path measures only a few metres wide, with walls soaring up to 180 metres on either side of you. It's easy to imagine the armies and merchants who made their way here many years ago, and the sense of awe they too must have felt upon reaching this ancient rock-hewn kingdom, surrounded by such a stark landscape. The Siq is the main entranceway to The Treasury – perhaps Petra's most iconic sight, and one of its most elaborate temples.

Petra's greatest surprise, however, is its size. With our guide we'll explore the old Roman road, the amphitheatre and several tombs. We'll also climb up to the beautiful façade of the Monastery, from where you will have a magnificent view of the entire site.

Exploring this truly extraordinary destination is sure to be a highlight of your trip.

Day 13 Petra Wadi Rum

We continue to Wadi Rum and browse around the excellent and informative visitor's centre. We'll visit several of Wadi Rum's distinctive rock formations and soak in the vast silence, towering sandstone mountains and spectacular desert landscapes of this surreal 'Valley of the Moon', where, the wind-sculpted rock formations change in hue throughout the day.

We'll also meet with local Bedouins, who live in scattered camps throughout the area, and ride camels to our traditional Bedouin tent, situated deep within the valley. We'll enjoy an evening with them at one of their camps, savouring the hospitality of these nomadic peoples and the uninterrupted desert panoramas.

Wadi Rum is probably best known for its connection with the enigmatic British army officer TE Lawrence, who was based here during the Great Arab Revolt of 1917-18. Much of David Lean's movie on his exploits, Lawrence of Arabia , was actually filmed in this very region.

Please note - While we are sure that this experience will inspire you, please be aware that your stay will differ from that of a traditional hotel. There are no hotels in or near Wadi Rum: the only places to sleep are the numerous bedouin-run camps dotted around the desert. The camps that we use are quoted as being 'luxury' because their locations differ from other styles of camps and your tent will have its own ensuite. Even at the best and more 'luxurious' camps, bathroom facilities within the tents are somewhat rudimentary and the bedding can also be quite basic, however still offering you a comfortable nights' accommodation. All of your meals are included and will be served in a common social area. While we may not make it sound glamorous, it will be a unique and memorable experience.

Day 14 Wadi Rum Dead Sea Amman

After waking up in the unique environment of the luxury camp this morning, we'll enjoy a walk around the area before scaling one of the large dunes to enjoy sensational views of the surrounding area; keen photographers will be delighted. We'll then ride camels back across the Wadi Rum desert.

Later, we'll drive for approximately an hour and a half to reach a radically different landscape – the Dead Sea. We'll spend the afternoon on the shores of this famous body of water, named for the dearth of life in its waters. The saline water has a high density that keeps bathers buoyant and makes getting underneath the surface very difficult. Floating on the surface without any sort of lilo makes for a once in a lifetime experience. Afterwards we'll return to Amman for the evening.

Day 15 Amman

Unfortunately, today marks the end of your incredible tour through Egypt and Jordan.

We hope you've been inspired.

Make your own way to the airport when required.

With such abundant tourist resources, it's hard to narrow down the best places to visit and things to do in these three countries.

Below, we recommend the top places to visit and their star attractions according to our clients' experiences and our professional knowledge.

1) Cairo: Ride a Camel to Witness the Great Pyramids in Giza

No trip to Egypt is complete without a visit to Giza.

Since Cairo would be your first stop in Egypt, Giza is the best introduction to Ancient Egypt, located just an hour's drive outside the capital. It has the only remaining man-made marvel of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Unlike the normal tour arrangement, we would first take you to explore some pyramids that were built in earlier times so that you better understand why the Great Pyramid is an absolute must-see for every traveler .

2) Luxor: Step Into the Largest Open-Air Museum

As Egyptians often say, "A visit to Luxor is a must when in Egypt." Also known as the Thebes ruins, Luxor boasts incredible sights ranging from ancient tombs to colossal temple complexes.

The Temple of Luxor is an essential stop during a visit to Luxor. We offer a flexible experience that can be enjoyed both during the day and at night, taking you to marvel at the grand pillars and statues that stand in solemn silence.

Viewing the Valley of the Kings from the air in a hot-air balloon is also highly recommended. Not only is the price competitive (about 100 USD per person), but you can also witness the beautiful sight of the sleepy city of Luxor awakening with the first rays of morning light.

3) Aswan: Relax on a Nile Cruise

The best way to visit the wonders between Luxor and Aswan is by boat.

Cruise along the Nile and avoid the hassle of changing your hotel or arranging daily transportation. Save more of your time to either relax on the ship or immerse yourself in the sights.

What's more, we recommend a dahabiya (with approximately 6–12 cabins) for you, which offers a much more private experience with customized service, letting you and your family enjoy a wonderful cruise in a traditional Nile craft.

4) Petra: Uncover the Secrets Behind the Rose City

We highly recommend that you ride a camel rather than hike on foot to marvel at the majestic Treasury, Al Khazna. This is because you may want to save your strength for the hiking involved in the latter part of a trip to Petra.

During a special event called Petra at Night, the square in front of the Treasury is illuminated by hundreds of candles, which transports you back to ancient times, with the soothing sounds of Arabic songs accompanying you under the starry night sky.

5) The Dead Sea: Enjoy Nature's Ultimate Buoyancy

Due to its high salinity, the Dead Sea offers a unique experience whereby you can effortlessly float on its surface. You can also enjoy renowned skin care treatments with the mineral-rich mud and salts found in the sea.

Since the Dead Sea is the lowest point on Earth, it retains heat well, with warm temperatures between November and April averaging 22–29°C (72–84°F), which makes it a great winter escape destination.

6) Wadi Rum: Fly Me to the "Moon"

Wadi Rum is a desert valley in southern Jordan, often referred to as the Valley of the Moon due to its moon-like surface.

Embark on a camel ride to explore this desert and gain insight into the fascinating lives of the Bedouin people. Alternatively, you can choose to camp overnight and witness the magnificent spectacle of the galaxy unfolding before your eyes.

What's more, you can choose to board a hot-air balloon to get a full panorama in the air while bathing in the morning light.

7) Jerusalem: Encounter the Spirit of the Holy City

When you visit the largest city in Israel, the Western Wall is a must-see stop whether you are religious or not.

The Western Wall, also known as the holiest site in the world for Jewish people, holds immense significance. You can feel the sacred atmosphere when you witness people in reverent silence before the Wailing Wall.

For a more immersive experience, we highly recommend exploring the Western Wall Tunnels. Marvel at the stunning ancient architecture and take in the awe-inspiring moments of being in close proximity to the most venerated section of the Western Wall.

8) Tel Aviv-Yafo: Experience the Harmonious Fusion of Two Cities

As the second largest city in Israel, the vibe in this city is harmonious where modernity is intertwined with history.

Roam freely in the city during the daytime. Visit the museum, stroll along the super-long seaside boulevard, and observe modern buildings. Beautiful memories of Israel would be formed in this city that's surrounded by mountains and sea.

At nightfall, you can see this White City transform into a vibrant spectacle with its splendid nightlife and beach parties.

9) Haifa: Discover the Beauty of the Modern Hanging Gardens

Haifa, located on the Mediterranean coast, is the third largest city in Israel. The Baha'i Terraces are an attraction that you shouldn't miss out on.

Built on Mount Carmel, the Vineyard of God, the Baha'i Terraces are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are filled with flowers, trees, statues, and water fountains.

Additionally, their vertical height is approximately 225 meters (738 feet). You will fully understand the reason why people call this area "the Hanging Gardens" the minute you see them.

When planning your trip to Egypt, Jordan, and Israel, it's important to note that Israel is the only country among the three that offers a visa-free policy for citizens of various countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Before visiting Egypt and Jordan, you have the option to obtain a visa by applying through the embassy or consulate, or by utilizing the official e-visa websites, which only take you a few minutes to fill out their application forms.

3. How Many Days to Stay in Egypt, Jordan, and Israel

For first-timers, we highly recommend that you spend at least 2 weeks appreciating a spectrum of highlights in these countries.

Here is a customizable 15-day itinerary that may fit your needs:

  • Days 1–3: Visit Jerusalem in Israel (including the Western Wall, the Tomb of King David, the Temple Mount...)
  • Days 4–6: Visit Amman, Petra, and the Dead Sea in Jordan (including an Amman food tour, hiking in Petra, floating on the Dead Sea...)
  • Days 7–15: Visit Cairo, Aswan, Luxor, and Hurghada in Egypt (including a 3-night Nile cruise, Hurghada desert safari, Giza camel ride...)

This itinerary aims to enable you to fully enjoy a family holiday covering the main highlights of Egypt, Jordan, and Israel.

In your 3 days in Israel, you can immerse yourself in the religious atmosphere while visiting attractions like the Western Wall and experiencing for yourself the places written in the Holy Bible and the scriptures of Judaism and Islam.

In your 3 days in Jordan, we would like to show you its special scenery in more revealing ways. This could be going through the city alleys to learn about the locals' lives, hiking over the history that was buried 1,000 years ago, and floating at the lowest point on Earth.

In your 8 days in Egypt, we want to offer you more relaxing experiences. Stay on a traditional dahabiya for 3 nights to feel closer to the mysterious Nile, enjoy some watery fun in the Red Sea, and ride into the desert to appreciate a vast world of sand.

You can get more details from  How Long to Spend in the Middle East .

Since most sights in Egypt, Jordan, and Israel are open air without air-conditioning, the best weather period is usually seen as the best time. Still, your best time to visit could vary from this depending on your needs.

For the best weather, traveling between November and April is considered the best time. During this period, the weather in Egypt, Jordan, and Israel is warm and pleasant, averaging around 22°C (72°F). Although you may encounter some short-duration rain, it won't be a problem for a well-prepared journey.

For the best prices and fewer crowds, traveling in May, September, and October are the optimum times. These months are considered to be the shoulder season, when you can get a good deal without sacrificing too much of your travel experience as daily temperatures peak at around 30°C (86°F).

The worst time to travel to Egypt, Jordan, and Israel is from June to August due to the heat, which regularly exceeds 37°C (99°F). Most of the historical and cultural sites are open air, but the hotter-than-human temperatures make it challenging to visit them comfortably.

Check out  how to plan a trip to the Middle East >>>

Typically, it will cost you from US$200/250/600 per person per day in Egypt/Jordan/Israel respectively for a private tour based on a group of 2–4 people.

Across these three countries, this averages from US$350 per person per day during your trip.

This cost varies depending on the time of year.

During the peak season from December to January, it would increase by around 20%. To reduce your costs, it's recommended to book your accommodation and flights at least 6 months in advance.

Iranian attack shows Oct. 7 did not kill Israel-Sunni regional alliance - analysis

It was not the love of tel aviv that the united arab emirates, bahrain, jordan, egypt, morocco, and -- unofficially -- saudi arabia together with israel, but rather a fear and hatred of tehran..

Israel vows to respond to Iran attack, weighs next steps during 'significant 24-hour period'

What we know.

  • The U.N. Security Council met to discuss and respond to Iran's attack, where Secretary-General António Guterres said "it's vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations in multiple fronts in the Middle East."
  • President Joe Biden convened a meeting of G7 leaders where they "condemned Iran's unprecedented attack against Israel," the White House said .
  • The attack yesterday was in retaliation for the April 1 Israeli bombing of its consular building in Syria, which killed two of Tehran’s top commanders. Israel will respond to Iran’s attack, but no final decisions about the size or timing of the response have been made, an Israeli official told NBC News .

Blinken spoke with Middle Eastern leaders today about Iran's attack on Israel

Blinken spoke with leaders from Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan today about Iran's overnight attack on Israel, spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

In his conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Blinken reiterated that the U.S. will continue to support Israel but does not want escalation in the region. The pair agreed that a coordinated diplomatic response is crucial.

Blinken and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry also agreed on wanting to avoid escalation and on the importance of a coordinated diplomatic response, as well as the need to get humanitarian assistance into Gaza, to protect Palestinians and achieve a cease-fire deal that also releases the remaining hostages.

Blinken and Ayman Safadi, Jordan’s deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs and expatriates, discussed similar topics, agreeing that escalation should be avoided and on the need to end the crisis in Gaza, leading to a solution that "provides lasting peace" for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Blinken thanked Jordan for leading the way on getting humanitarian assistance into Gaza, including through joint efforts with the U.S. to airdrop deliveries over the enclave.

Hostage families remain focused on securing freedom for remaining 133 hostages

Hagar Brodutch, who was kidnapped by Hamas along with her three children, endured another terrifying night yesterday during the Iranian missile attack.

This morning, she said she is hoping for a swift end to war.

“We had a horrible evening and night. I just wish the war would be over already. We can’t stand it anymore,” Brodutch said via WhatsApp.

She and her children were kidnapped from kibbutz Kfar Aza on Oct. 7 and held captive for 51 days in Gaza.

While in captivity, Brodutch also cared for 4-year-old American Abigail Eden, whose parents were killed by Hamas. Brodutch and Abigail were freed in a prisoner exchange on Nov. 26. More than 100 people still remain in captivity.

Daniel Aloni, a former hostage who was freed with her 5-year-old daughter, Emilia, on Nov. 24 said she worries the rising tensions with Iran could divert attention from the hostages in Gaza.

“I don’t know how Israel will choose to respond to the massive attack carried out yesterday by Iran,” Aloni said. “However, I hope we do not get dragged into an escalation in the region, as a regional war would divert attention from the 133 hostages still held by Hamas under dire conditions, injured or ill, in Gaza."

The Hostage Family Forum, a group that represents the families of hostages, said in a statement today that amid the stress and anxiety of last night’s attack, the focus should still be on the remaining hostages who have been held for more than 190 days.

“The fears and emotions we all felt pale in comparison to the terror, dread, despair, loneliness, cold, physical and mental torment the 133 hostages held by Hamas have endured for 190 days and nights,” the forum said in the statement. “We reiterate our calls for the international community to do everything possible to secure the release of all 133 hostages before more innocent lives are tragically lost.”

Israel to lift restriction on educational activities tomorrow

Israel said it will resume educational activities throughout the country tomorrow, reversing restrictions that were placed last night ahead of Iran's attack on the country.

Iran doubles down on right to self-defense in U.N. Security Council address

Iran has a right to defend itself after Israel’s attack on a consular building in Syria this month. That was the clear and stern message delivered to the U.N. Security Council today by Amir Saeid Iravani, the representative of Iran.

“It was entirely in the exercise of Iran’s inherent right to defend itself,” Iravani said of yesterday's aerial attack against Israel. “These actions were necessary and proportionate.”

Iravani said Iran acted in accordance with international law following the April 1 attack, first by engaging the Security Council on April 2 and then by not targeting civilians in its aerial offensive yesterday.

He denied allegations that Iran has proxies in the region and said it does not seek escalation or war.

Israel, on the other hand, has shirked its global responsibility by attempting to "use lies, manipulate the narrative and engage in a destructive blame game,” he said.

“They ignored the underlying root cause of the situation in the region,” he went on, referring to the deaths of more than 33,000 people in Gaza since Oct. 7.

Iravani also chided the U.S. and its allies for shielding Israel “from any responsibility for the Gaza massacre.” He said the Security Council has failed to enforce international law and has allowed Israel to continue attacks on civilian targets. It must take “urgent and punitive measures to stop genocide against people of Gaza," he said.

Israel says world 'cannot settle on inaction' at U.N. meeting

Israel's representative to the U.N., Gilad Erdan, said at today's meeting that Iran's attack "crossed every red line."

He emphasized that Israel "reserves the legal right to retaliate."

"We are not a frog in boiling water," he said. "We are a nation of lions. Following such a massive and direct attack on Israel, the entire world, let alone Israel, cannot settle for inaction. We will defend our future."

Erdan also called on the council to take action, describing Iran as "the world's worst human rights violator."

"Action must be taken now, not for Israel's sake, not for the region's sake," he said. "But for the world's sake."

Western hypocrisy ‘almost embarrassing to watch,’ Russia says at the U.N.

Doha Madani

The Russian diplomatic envoy to the United Nations criticized a double standard at the Security Council as states condemn Iran for its attack on Israel but did nothing when Russia asked to meet after the April 1 strike in Syria.

Vasily Alekseyevich Nebenzya told fellow member states that they were witnessing "a display of hypocrisy and double standards, which it's almost embarrassing to watch." He described an attack against a diplomatic representation as a "casus belli," or act of war, under international law.

"And if Western representation had been hit, you would immediately have rained down reprisals and would argued that you were right about this in this very chamber," Nebenzya said. "And this is because for you everything that has to do with Western representations of Western systems is sacred and needs to be protected."

He called on all parties to exercise restraint, noting that Iran has indicated it considers the matter concluded and saying others should follow suit.

France and U.K. condemn attacks on Israel, blame Iran for destabilization

Both representatives for France and the United Kingdom laid blame on Iran's region for destabilizing the region, condemning Tehran's barrage of rockets against Israel.

"The scale and nature of Iran's heinous assault, the first direct attack from Iran on Israel soil, poses grave risks to the security and stability of citizens across the Middle East," U.K. Ambassador Barbara Woodward said.

Woodward said that it was imperative for all parties to "exercise maximum restraint" and that the U.K. welcomed actions to deter Iran. France's representative, Nathalie Broadhurst, reiterated the country's condemnation of Iran.

"In deciding to undertake such an unprecedented act, Iran crossed a new threshold in its destabilizing action and is risking a military escalation for which it would be responsible," Broadhurst said. "We call upon Iran and its allies to at long last, and without further delay, see their destabilizing activities throughout the region."

Neither country addressed the April 1 attack on the Iranian diplomatic premises in Damascus.

Aiding Israel, Ukraine is 'vital' for the West, Sen. Schumer says

Julie Tsirkin

Top congressional leaders appear united in providing unfettered funding to Israel and Ukraine through a national security spending package that could come up for a vote this week.

Biden spoke with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York in a phone call today. Speaking to reporters after the call, Schumer said the U.S. needs to remain “ironclad” in its commitment to Israel.

“We need to help Israel,” he said, adding that the country spent over $1 billion defending itself against an attack by Iran.

Echoing Johnson’s comments earlier, Schumer touted the bill as the best way to continue aiding Israel and Ukraine against outside threats.

“There was a consensus on the phone among all the leaders that we had to help Israel and help Ukraine, and now hopefully we can work that out and get this done next week,” he said. “It’s vital for the future of Ukraine, for Israel and the West.”

Security Council is obligated to hold Iran accountable, U.S. says

U.S. Ambassador Robert Wood urged the Security Council to "unequivocally condemn Iran's aggressive actions" and vowed to pursue additional measures to hold Iran accountable at the body.

"The Security Council has an obligation to not let Iran's actions go unanswered," Wood said.

Iran is "broadly" complicit in the Oct. 7 attack with its support of Hamas, Wood said, and the country's regime has "flagrantly" violated international law by arming proxy militias. Wood told the council that the U.S. aims to de-escalate the situation but that Iran's actions cannot go unanswered.

"This Iranian support contributed to the current crisis in Gaza. Colleagues, these and other reckless Iranian actions are not inherently defensive actions against other member states," Wood said. "Given the threats Iran’s aggressive actions pose for international peace and security, we have a collective responsibility as members of the Security Council to ensure that Iran complies with the council’s resolutions and ceases its violations of the charter."

'Neither the region nor the world can afford more war,' U.N. chief says

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres opened today's Security Council meeting by urging de-escalation for the sake of global stability.

"We have a shared responsibility to work for peace — regional and indeed global security are being undermined by the hour. Neither the region nor the world can afford more war," Guterres said.

He criticized both Iran's attack on Israel and the attack on the Iranian Consulate compound in Damascus, Syria, this month. He reminded all parties that they have a shared responsibility to promote peace, facilitate the return of hostages still in Gaza and establish a humanitarian cease-fire.

"It’s time to step back from the brink," Guterres said. "It’s vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations in multiple fronts in the Middle East. Civilians are already bearing the brunt and paying the highest price."

Israeli air force intercepted dozens of aerial threats from Iran

Israeli defenses thwarted dozens of unmanned aircraft, cruise missiles and other aerial threats Iran launched last night, IDF officials said in a statement on Telegram.

Only a few missiles made it into Israel. Nevatim Airbase, one of the largest air bases in Israel, and a road in the Hermon area, three hours away, suffered damage. Operations at the air base were not affected, according to the statement.

Biden tells Netanyahu Israel shouldn't retaliate against Iran

Watch MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell and Alex Witt discuss the latest on Israel’s assessment of Iran’s attack and what can be expected from the two countries.

Jordan’s foreign minister accuses Netanyahu of dragging West into regional war

Jordanian Foreign Affairs Minister Ayman Safadi warned the only way to reduce escalation in the region is to stop the war in Gaza, blaming recent spiraling regional relations on Netanyahu.

"We had warned that Netanyahu would try to create a confrontation with Iran to drag the United States and the West into a regional war so the focus would shift towards Iran and the world would forget Gaza," he told Al-Mamlaka news.

Safadi added that the challenge following Iran's retaliation yesterday is how to end the aggression so the world can refocus on Gaza. He said the ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador to speak about the regime's criticism of Jordan's positions.

"We do not want an escalation with Iran, and we want good relations with it based on the principle of noninterference in internal affairs and respect for others," Safadi said. "Jordan is capable of protecting its interests. Iran’s problem is with Israel, not with Jordan."

Jordan, which hosts more than 2 million Palestinian refugees, has done more for the Palestinians than anyone else, including Iran, Safadi said.

Israeli fighter jets strike Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, IDF says

Israeli fighter jets struck numerous Hezbollah targets in Lebanon today in the towns of Kfarkela, Maroun al-Ras, Aita al-Shaab, Souaneh and Markaba, the military said in a statement.

The IDF said it targeted Hezbollah "military compounds and terrorist infrastructure" in some places and "threats" in others.

A Lebanese state news report said two missiles hit a home in Maroun al-Ras. It also said the area of Aita al-Shaab that was under artillery shelling was a residential neighborhood.

IDF spokesman: Israel weighing next steps during 'significant 24-hour period'

Israel is in a very "significant 24-hour period" and appears to be carefully weighing its next steps in response to Iran's attack, IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said today.

Operational plans have been approved for both offensive and defensive actions, but Hagari declined to provide further details. Operations will continue in Gaza, and additional reserves will be called to join the fighting, he said.

Israel, along with an international coalition that includes the U.S., the U.K. and France, thwarted 350 exploding drones, rockets and cruise and ballistic missiles yesterday, he said.

"Iran, since the beginning of the war, wants only one thing — to escalate the region," Hagari said in English. "Until now, she worked through her proxies, but she has now revealed herself."

As Israel plans its response, he said, rescuing the 133 hostages being held captive by Hamas remains a top priority.

"We will not miss any opportunity to bring them back home," Hagari said. "This is our responsibility."

No final decisions made on how Israel will respond, official says

Raf Sanchez

TEL AVIV — Israel will respond to Iran’s attack but no final decisions have been made on the size or timing of the response, an Israeli official told NBC News.

“It is clear Israel will respond, the question is when and at what scale,” the official said after an hours-long war cabinet meeting.

The IDF has been asked to present additional options to decision makers. The official said that among the considerations were whether Israel needed to retaliate immediately or could afford to wait, and what impact any escalation against Iran would have on Israeli operations in Gaza.

Israel will respond to Iran's attack, according to government official

An Israeli government official in the prime minister’s office said no decision was made on exactly what Israel will do but that “the IDF will need to present options” and that “it is clear that Israel will respond.”

A second Israeli aide to another member of the war Cabinet said, “No one wants to see an escalation,” and that “it’s a very delicate time right now.”

Palestinians in Gaza react to Iranian attacks on Israel

After months of heavy bombardment, Gazans said they were able to get a few hours of reprieve from strikes as Israel fended off attacks from Iran.

“Any act that results in getting the Israeli occupation busy from Gaza is good for Gaza,” one man told an NBC News crew in Rafah.

War Cabinet meeting concluded after several hours, official says

TEL AVIV — Israel’s war Cabinet meeting has concluded after several hours of deliberation, an Israeli official told NBC News.

There were no additional details on what Israeli leadership discussed or whether any decisions were made.

An official previously told NBC News that this meeting is where policy issues would be "laid out" following Iran's retaliatory strike.

Los Angeles law enforcement agencies on high alert

Police and sheriff's departments in Los Angeles said yesterday that they are on high alert following Iran's attack on Israel.

"While there are no credible threats to Los Angeles at this time, we are committed to ensuring safeguards to houses of worship and sensitive areas throughout all communities in Los Angeles," the Los Angeles Police Department w rot e in a post on X .

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said his department is increasing patrol checks around "sensitive and religious sites" in the area.

Some 400,000 people with Iranian heritage live in the United States, and about a third of them, or 138,000, live in Los Angeles, according to a 2023 study published by UCLA. An estimated 565,000 Jewish residents live in L.A., according to a 2021 study published by the Brandies University Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies.

Iranian launches shot down by Jordan, U.S. and U.K. as well as Israeli military

While Israel's Iron Dome defense system was active in keeping the barrage of Iranian drones and missiles at bay, the country was assisted by allies and a neighboring state.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak confirmed this morning that the United Kingdom participated in a coordinated effort to fend off the attack. The Royal Air Force sent additional planes to the region already as part of its own missions in Iraq, Sunak said.

"I can confirm that our planes did shoot down a number of Iranian attack drones," Sunak said today. "And I want to pay tribute to the bravery and professionalism of our pilots flying into the face of danger to protect civilians."

President Joe Biden also noted in his statement last night that he directed U.S. forces to combat the attack. The Jordanian government said today that it also struck down a number of incoming threats, according to The New York Times .

Jordan described its motivations as acting in the country's own defense, not on behalf of Israel, as the drones and missiles entered Jordan's airspace. Jordanian citizens have been largely critical of Israel's actions in Gaza, with large pro-Palestinian demonstrations taking place in Amman over the last few months.

Biden and G7 allies condemn Iran's retaliatory attack

The White House posted a photo on X today of President Joe Biden's video conference with G7 leaders this morning, saying leaders "condemned Iran's unprecedented attack against Israel."

The G7 leaders issued a statement later reiterating their "full solidarity and support to Israel and its people."

"With its actions, Iran has further stepped toward the destabilization of the region and risks provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation," the leaders said in their joint statement. "This must be avoided. We will continue to work to stabilize the situation and avoid further escalation. In this spirit, we demand that Iran and its proxies cease their attacks, and we stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilizing initiatives.

The leaders said they will also "strengthen" their "cooperation to end the crisis in Gaza, including by continuing to work towards an immediate and sustainable ceasefire and the release of hostages by Hamas, and deliver increased humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in need."

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron condemns attack

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said he condemned Iran's attack on Israel in a call with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian.

"I made clear that Iran must stop these reckless attacks, de-escalate and release the MSC Aries," Cameron wrote in a post on X .

On Saturday, Cameron, the former British prime minister, called the attack "reckless," saying it will only "inflame" tensions in the region.

House Intelligence Chair Mike Turner: 'This is an escalating conflict'

U.S. House Intelligence Chairman Rep. Mike Turner

The Biden administration is failing to draw a firm line with Iran and recognize it as a “malicious force” in the region, House Intelligence Chair Mike Turner (R-Ohio) said on “Meet the Press.”

“I think the administration needs to take seriously that this attack has happened. It’s unprecedented and certainly it needs to be viewed as an escalation,” he said. “This is an escalating conflict.”

Turner said the U.S. must make it clear to Iran that it is prepared to defend Israel in a broader conflict but should not engage in direct military action.

“This administration is failing to say there is a red line," he said. "There should be a red line.”

To firm up that red line, the White House must put more pressure on Qatar and Egypt, which have acted as intermediaries with Israel since October, Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said on CNN.

“It’s time for us to make it clear that Hamas does not have a future in the region and that the United States intends to be forcefully engaged on both sides to get them to the table, to get this resolved, and to get these hostages released,” he said. “I think that’s been happening privately, but I think it’s also helpful for it to be clear publicly that it’s not acceptable for Hamas to continue day after day the torture of hostages and their families.”

Meanwhile Israel should pause to assess damage from Iranian missiles and consult with close allies and partners before deciding on next steps, Coons added.

Hezbollah praises Iran for attack, says Islamic Republic exercised its 'legal right'

Lebanon's Hezbollah , an Iran-backed political party and militia, congratulated leaders in Iran for its strike on Israel, calling it a "brave and wise" response to the attack on the consulate in Syria.

A statement from Hezbollah went on to describe the attack as an exercise of the Islamic Republic's "natural and legal right." Hezbollah went on to say that the political objectives will emerge over time.

"The operation achieved its precisely defined military objectives — despite the participation of the United States, its international allies, and its regional tools in responding to the stunning attack," the statement said.

Hezbollah has been attacking Israel by firing over the shared Lebanon and Israel border since Oct. 8, a day after the Hamas-led attack on the country. While the militia has its own interests against Israel, it has repeatedly expressed support to the Palestinian people and is closely aligned with Tehran.

Speaker Johnson says he looks to provide more funding to Israel

House Speaker Mike Johnson will push a clean bill to fund Israel without offsets, he said on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures."

"We’re going to try again this week," Johnson said, adding that he has not ruled out adding aid to Ukraine, as well.

Details of the package, which will be sent to the Senate in the coming days, are still being hammered out, he said.

Israel's president describes Iran attack as a 'declaration of war' in exclusive Sky News interview

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said in an exclusive interview with Sky News that the country is not seeking war with Iran, but that it would defend itself.

“I mean, this is a declaration of war,” Herzog said. “Now because we are restrained and because we know the repercussions, and because we have deliberations with our partners, we are considering all options and I’m quite confident that we will take the necessary steps that are necessary to protect and defend our people.”

He added that Israelis are “not war seekers.”

The Iranian foreign ministry released a statement Saturday reiterating its position that the strikes carried out against Israel were “in exercise of its inherent right of self-defense.”

The ministry cited  Article 51 of the United Nations charter  and said that it responded to Israeli’s “recurring military aggressions,” including the strike of Iran’s diplomatic building in Syria earlier this month.

When asked by Sky News whether the April 1 attack on Iran's diplomatic building was "worth it," Herzog said that the attack hit a facility "nearby" the consulate, not the consulate building itself.

Israel has not taken responsibility for the strike but Herzog did not deny it when asked.

Analysis: Can Biden pressure Netanyahu not to retaliate against Iran?

TEL AVIV — President Biden putting pressure on Netanyahu not to respond to Iran's overnight aerial assault begs the question: Can the U.S. persuade Israel not to retaliate against Iran?

History shows there is some precedent.

Let’s go back to early 1991 and the first Gulf War: Saddam Hussein began firing dozens of SCUD missiles from Iraq into Israeli cities. Two people were killed and there was terror across Israel that the missiles would detonate with chemical or biological warheads, causing mass casualties.

Israel’s right-wing prime minister at the time, Yitzhak Shamir, was poised to order airstrikes in response. But President George H.W. Bush talked him out of it.

Bush was concerned that an Israeli attack on Iraq would shatter the fragile diplomatic coalition the U.S. had built to take on Hussein — a coalition that included Arab states. That coalition went on defeat Iraqi forces, liberate Kuwait and halt the SCUD missile attacks on Israel.

It’s an example Biden and his aides may be looking to as they try to convince Netanyahu not to escalate further.

Arab officials worry Netanyahu could use this moment to start a wider war with Iran

JERUSALEM — Two senior Arab officials tell NBC News they are worried that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could use this moment to start a wider war with Iran.

The concern comes amid pleas from across the Arab world for restraint in the region. Ayman Safadi, the Jordanian minister of foreign affairs, tweeted that an escalation of the conflict could push the "whole region into abyss of war," and said "the first step towards de-escalation is ending the Israeli aggression on Gaza & starting to implement the 2-state solution as it is the only path to security & peace for all."

Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, meanwhile, tweeted that the escalation between Iran and Israel "is nothing but a direct result of what Egypt has repeatedly warned about, about the dangers of expanding the conflict in the region as a result of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, and the provocative military actions being practiced in the region."

Other Arab officials urged diplomacy to prevent exacerbating tensions. In a statement posted on X, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the U.N. Security Council “to assume its responsibility towards maintaining international peace and security, especially in this region that is extremely sensitive to global peace and security, and to prevent the escalation of the crisis that will have serious consequences if it expands.”

In the United Arab Emirates, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for "resolving differences through dialogue and through diplomatic channels, and for adhering to the rule of law and respecting the United Nations Charter."

War Cabinet meeting underway in Israel as government weighs response

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convenes the war cabinet in the Kirya in Tel Aviv.

Israel's war Cabinet is meeting now, a senior Israeli official told NBC News, noting that "policy issues are going to be laid out."

“From our perspective, the situation is ongoing and we don’t know if it’s over yet,” the official said. “We are still dealing with their proxies in the region and we are still in the middle of a war.”

Iranian leadership has said it considers its response to Israel concluded and that it acted in self-defense following the strike on its diplomatic facilities in Syria.

The Israeli official referred to the Iran attack as a “failure," adding that they believed Iran's regime made a mistake "by exposing itself to the world.”

GOP House Intel chair says 'there should be a red line' on Iran

Alexandra Marquez is based in Washington, D.C.

House Intelligence Committee Chair Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, criticized the Biden administration after a top White House official declined to say whether the Biden administration has a “red line” for getting directly involved in a conflict against Iran.

“There should be a red line," Turner said during an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Asked during an earlier interview with "Meet the Press" about a potential "red line" for Iran, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said, “We could sit here all day talking about what is and what isn’t a red line. I’m not going to do that.”

Turner called on the Biden administration to “take seriously that this attack has happened. It’s unprecedented and certainly it needs to be viewed as an escalation.”

Still, Turner agreed, “I don’t think at this point that the United States should be engaged in a military action directly at Iran.”

International leaders condemn strikes on Israel

Fears of escalation into a regional war are top of mind for international leaders who urged restraint, many condemning Iran for its retaliatory strike and expressing solidarity with Israel.

Western allies, such as Germany, Canada and the United Kingdom, had harsh words for the Iranian regime. U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak accused Iran of "sowing chaos in its own backyard" while Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the attack demonstrated "the Iranian regime’s disregard for peace and stability in the region."

Leadership in numerous other countries expressed solidarity with Israel, including leaders in Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Denmark, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Austria and France.

Some leaders expressed concerns about the spiraling tensions in the Middle East. Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the country was following the situation "with the deepest concern." The United Arab Emirates released a statement through its foreign ministry pleading for restraint "to avoid dangerous repercussions" while urging diplomacy.

A few government leaders placed blame on Israel, with Russia backing Iran's own right to self-defense under the United Nations charter. The Russian statement went on to urge all parties to restrain themselves while reiterating that a failure to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will continue to bring tension.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said he believes we are "now in the prelude to World War III" and wished for Israelis "to stop the madness of their ruler."

Fetterman says U.S. should unconditionally stand with Israel

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., says he is shocked by President Joe Biden's message to Israel that the U.S. will not participate in operations against Iran after it fired missiles at Israel.

"It’s astonishing that we are not standing firmly with Israel," Fetterman said on CNN Sunday morning. "There should never be any kind of conditions on all that. When a nation can launch hundreds of drones at Israel, I’m not going to be talking conditions, ever."

When asked if he thought Biden's warning to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was the right call, he bluntly said: "I don’t agree with that."

"I just think we should follow and have Israel’s back in the situation," he added. "I don’t agree with the president."

China expresses ‘deep concern’ over Iranian attack

Jennifer Jett

HONG KONG — China expressed “deep concern” over the Iranian attack on Israel, describing it as “the latest spillover of the Gaza conflict” and calling for restraint by relevant parties to prevent further escalation.

“China calls on the international community, especially countries with influence, to play a constructive role for the peace and stability of the region,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement today.

China has sought to serve as a mediator in the Middle East, an increasingly important source of energy imports for the world’s second-largest economy.

Former Russian president: An Israel-Iran war would hurt Biden's re-election prospects

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on the messaging platform Telegram that a war between Israel and Iran would hurt Joe Biden’s chance of being re-elected U.S. president.

“What is the difference for Washington between what happened in the Middle East and the events in ‘Ukraine’? America does not want a big war in the Middle East. And it tries to maintain balance and show restraint,” he wrote.

“Killings in Gaza worsen Biden’s election prospects, and the war between Israel and Iran adds further uncertainty.”

Iran says it told U.S. and neighbors 'limited' attack was coming, summons Western ambassadors

cruise egypt israel jordan

Iran has sought to make clear this morning that it considers its exchange with Israel over, while warning against a response.

Tehran informed the U.S. ahead of time that it would launch a "limited" retaliatory attack against Israel for self-defense, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said in a meeting with foreign ambassadors in the Iranian capital today. He also said that Iran's regional neighbors were given 72 hours notice that the retaliatory strikes were coming.

President Ebrahim Raisi said that his country's armed forces had "taught a lesson to the Zionist enemy." Raisi warned that "any new adventure will be responded with a heavier and regrettable response."

And Tehran said that it had summoned the French, British and German envoys over their reactions to the attack.

Pope Francis makes 'heartfelt appeal' against 'spiral of violence'

Deborah Lubov

Pope Francis addressed the escalating tensions in the Middle East, calling for an end to the worsening violence.

"I make a heartfelt appeal for a halt to any action that might fuel a spiral of violence with the risk of dragging the Middle East into an even greater war conflict," he said, speaking in Italian in public remarks after reciting the Regina Coeli prayer.

"No one should threaten the existence of others," he continued. "Instead, all nations should take the side of peace and help the Israelis and Palestinians to live in two states, side by side, in security."

The pope urged a cease-fire and for hostages to be freed.

"No more war, no more attacks, no more violence," he said. "Yes to dialogue and yes to peace.”

Some flights canceled following Iran attack on Israel

Iran's attack on Israel has caused some air travel disruptions in the region, with Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran canceling all flights through at least 6 a.m. local time Monday, according to Iran's semiofficial ISNA news agency. In Israel, a spokesperson for the Israeli Airport Authority said airspace was back open but that travelers should check with airlines to see if their flights had been rescheduled.

At least one airline, Lufthansa , canceled flights in advance of the attack, announcing on Friday that it had suspended flights into Tehran and Beirut through Thursday, April 18. It also suspended flights to and from Tel Aviv; Erbil, Iraq; and Amman, Jordan, through Monday.

Emirates Airlines canceled and rerouted flights immediately following the attack, but said it had resumed operations to and from Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq as of Sunday afternoon local time.

Analyst: Attack is a 'major milestone,' even if Iran intended it to be largely symbolic

Iran's unprecedented attack on Israel marks a significant moment in history, even if it was intended to be largely symbolic, according to an analyst with geopolitical risk advisory firm Eurasia Group.

"Make no mistake: even if #Iran intended this to be a telegraphed and (it would seem) largely symbolic show of force to restore deterrence, it has attacked Israel with missiles and drones for the first time," tweeted Gregory Brew, an Iran analyst.

"Alea iacta est, folks," he added , using a Latin term for "the die is cast."

Brew wrote that he "did not anticipate Iran would use its own missiles, from within its own territory, against Israel directly."

"A major milestone," Brew tweeted.

NSC's John Kirby: 'I won't get into hypotheticals' on potential retaliatory strikes against Iran

In an interview with NBC News' "Meet the Press" on Sunday, John Kirby, the White House National Security Council spokesperson, declined to confirm NBC News reporting that Biden told Netanyahu that U.S. will not participate in offensive operations against Iran.

"I won't go into the greater detail of the [president's] conversation with the prime minister [of Israel]," Kirby told moderator Kristen Welker.

"'We stand with you and your self defense,' that was the main message that the president delivered to the prime minister," Kirby added, also declining to mention any "red lines" for U.S. involvement against Iran.

He also lauded Israel for "an incredible military achievement" in shooting down incoming attacks from Iran last night and reiterated that "we don't seek an escalation. We don't seek a wider war in the region."

New York to increase security for Jewish communities

New York Mayor Eric Adams says he has directed the New York Police Department to deploy additional resources to Jewish communities and places of worship across the city “out of abundance of caution.”

“Our administration has also begun outreach to both Jewish leaders and elected officials across the five boroughs to keep them apprised of the situation,” Adams said in a post on X , noting that there is no direct or imminent threat to New York.

“Our intelligence and counterterrorism teams will continue to closely monitor the situation,” he said.

Quiet streets in Tel Aviv after Iranian attack

Paul Goldman

TEL AVIV — Traffic today on Route 5, one of the busiest roads into Tel Aviv, was much thinner than usual, as many people appeared to be staying home after Iran’s overnight attack. Sunday is the start of Israel’s workweek.

Some schools are on break for the upcoming Passover holiday, but children’s camps are closed due to the situation. Popular coffee shops are not as busy as usual, with plenty of seats available.

Israel on Sunday hailed its successful air defenses in the face of an unprecedented attack by Iran, saying it and its allies thwarted 99% of the more than 300 drones and missiles launched toward its territory. But regional tensions remain high, amid fears of further escalation in the event of a possible Israeli counter-strike.

World cannot afford another war, U.N. chief says ahead of Security Council meeting

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the Iranian attack on Israel and called for the immediate cessation of hostilities, citing fears they could escalate into a regionwide conflict.

“I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East,” he said in a statement last night. “I have repeatedly stressed that neither the region nor the world can afford another war.”

The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting today at 4 p.m. ET after a request by Israel’s ambassador to the U.N. The ambassador, Gilad Erdan, asked the council to condemn Iran’s attack on his country and to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terror organization.

“The Iranian attack is a serious threat to global peace and security and I expect the Council to use every means to take concrete action against Iran,” Erdan said in a post on X .

Hamas rejects latest hostage deal proposal, Netanyahu's office says

cruise egypt israel jordan

Patrick Smith

Palestinian group Hamas has rejected a proposal to free the remaining 133 hostages taken from Israel on Oct. 7 last year, which set off the six-month-old Israel-Hamas war, Israel has said.

The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Mossad intelligence agency said in a statement early today that a week after meeting with Israeli officials and three mediators in Cairo, the Egyptian capital, "Hamas responded negatively to the outline presented to it."

The Israelis said the rejection — which it said included "a very significant area of flexibility" from Israel — proves that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar "does not want a humanitarian deal and the return of the abductees."

The Hamas leader, the prime minister's office said, "continues to take advantage of the tensions with Iran and strive for the unification of the arenas and an overall escalation in the region."

Israel said it would continue with the goals of the war, to free the hostages and wipe out Hamas entirely.

Hamas confirmed in a statement on Saturday, reported by the Reuters news agency , that it had rejected the proposal. The group said it continued to work towards a permanent cease-fire as well as the "the withdrawal of the occupation army from the entire Gaza Strip."

Biden told Netanyahu that U.S. won’t support Israeli counterattack, official tells NBC News

cruise egypt israel jordan

Andrea Mitchell

WASHINGTON — Biden told Netanyahu that while the U.S. commitment to defend Israel is ironclad, it will not participate in offensive operations against Iran, a senior administration official told NBC News.

In their call last night, the official said, Biden told Netanyahu that since the Iranian attack appeared to have caused minimal casualties and damage, Israel should not retaliate against Iran.

Separately, a senior administration official and a senior defense official said earlier that top U.S. officials are concerned that Israel could respond quickly without thinking through potential fallout.

Israel thanks allies and says it's ready for more attacks

Israel's military is ready for further acts of aggression from Iran and said the international coalition of allies that defended the country from some 303 missiles and armed drones was standing firm.

“Bless you dear soldiers and commanders of the IDF and IAF. Bless the coalition of nations led by the US and @POTUS,” Israeli President Isaac Herzog said in a post on X .

Israel Defense Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner told Sky News today that the aerial defense operation, which involved American, British and French forces, was a "unity of reasonable players against the diabolical plan of Iran."

"This is a very, very serious act against Israel," Lerner said. "Together, united, we saved Israeli lives."

As for whether Israel would respond, Lerner said this was "a good question" and said the IDF is ready for any eventuality, but that the military would take its cues from the government, which is meeting today.

Ukraine condemns Iran, drawing parallels with Russian attacks as it pushes for new U.S. aid

Ukraine has condemned Iran's attack on Israel, drawing parallels with its fight against Russia as Kyiv presses its allies to boost its own aerial defenses, which have come under increasing attack from drones Tehran has supplied to Moscow.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X that "Iran’s actions threaten the entire region and the world, just as Russia’s actions threaten a larger conflict."

Zelenskyy called on the U.S. to “make the necessary decisions to strengthen America’s allies at this critical time," with new military aid for Kyiv held up by Republicans in Congress and Russia threatening a battlefield breakthrough.

His post came hours after the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs appealed for the world to act "before it's too late."

"Just as #Iran attacked #Israel with Shahed drones last night, Russia simultaneously attacked Kharkiv in Ukraine with the same weapon," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on X today. "Unpunished evil always returns and, if not stopped, spreads widely. The time to break this cycle of violence is now. Before it’s too late."

Israeli girl, 7, in life-threatening condition after Iranian attack

A 7-year-old girl is in a critical condition after receiving severe head injuries in Iran's attack on Israel overnight, Israeli authorities said today.

"The condition of the 7-year-old girl evacuated from the scene last night has worsened and remains critical and unstable," said Yasmin Amos, a spokesperson at the Soroka Medical Center in the southern city of Beersheba, where the girl is being treated.

"She is suffering from severe head injuries, and her life is in danger." she said.

Israeli Defense Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner confirmed to the U.K.'s Sky News earlier that the so-far unidentified girl was in a "life-threatening" condition.

The vast majority of the 300 missile and armed drones were intercepted by Israeli forces and their allies, including American, British and French forces.

Previous reports put the girl's age at 10.

Hamas and Palestinian militant groups praise Iran attack

Palestinian militant group Hamas has said Iran's barrage of more than 300 missiles and armed drones overnight was a "deserved response" for Israel's attack on Iran's consulate in Syria on April 1.

On its Telegram channel, Hamas said Tehran was exercising its "natural right" and was carrying out "a deserved response to the crime of targeting the Iranian consulate in Damascus and assassinating a number of Revolutionary Guard leaders there."

Separately, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) said Israel was humiliated and unable to defend itself. "The Iranian response to the zionist entity is a pivotal event that will establish new rules of engagement in the region," it said on Telegram.

The Palestinian Mujahideen Movement, an armed faction in the Gaza Strip, also hailed the Iranian response on its Telegram channel today. Israel, it said, "is not deterred except by hitting it on the head."

‘A very scary night’ in Israel

JAFFA — In this coastal city to the south of Tel Aviv, the streets are quiet but calm. The beaches are empty and the skies above — which were noisy with fighter jets overnight — are largely still.

For parents across Israel, the deep fear of last night has given way to a more mundane daytime concern: how to keep kids entertained with schools and education centers closed across the country.

“All the parents are at home today because they’ve got no place to put their kids,” said Debbie Kay, a 49-year-old marketing manager whose teenage son was supposed to be at camp ahead of the Passover holiday.

“I feel very relieved. It was a very scary night,” she said, saying she was encouraged that Israel’s air defenses had largely repelled the attack. “We showed the world we’re not going to take anything from anyone and we have the strength to fight back. And our allies came through for us.”

She added that she hoped Israel would not strike back against Iran. “If we do something now, I think that would be stupidity and ego. I don’t think anyone here wants any more escalation.”

Iranian military chief says attack is over but warns of strikes on U.S. targets

The chief of staff of Iran's armed forces said today that while this weekend's drone and missile attack on Israel has ended, the regime will attack U.S. bases in the region if Washington takes part in any attack on Iranian targets.

Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri told state TV: "If Washington participates in any attack against us, we will target its bases in the region and their bases will be unsafe."

Bagheri added: "If Israel attacks our interests we will respond with force and our next operation will be much bigger."

He said the missile barrage on Israel had ended only because "we are not willing to continue it," implying that Iran could have continued had it chosen to do so.

Separately, Hossein Salami, commander in chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, told state TV that the attack "could have been extensive," but was "more successful than expected."

Early morning scenes in Jerusalem

Iran's unprecedented attack on Israel has been "foiled," the Israeli army announced on April 14, with almost all of the more than 200 missiles and drones intercepted with the help of the United States and allies.

Civilians appear to be returning to normal life in Jerusalem this morning, after Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel overnight.

U.S. Embassy in Israel lifts shelter-in-place warning for employees

U.S. government workers and their families in Israel no longer need to take shelter after the threat of drone and missile attacks "diminished," the U.S. Embassy said in a statement early today.

The embassy however retains its previous cautious travel advice for U.S. citizens, which limits personal travel to between Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and no further south than Be'er Sheva.

Schools are closed across Israel today — Sunday is the first day of the working week is Israel — and many flights are canceled.

"The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem reminds U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and increased personal security awareness as security incidents often take place without warning," the statement said.

Israeli defense minister: 'Campaign is not over'

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that the confrontation between Iran and Israel "is not over."

“The campaign is not over yet. ... We must be prepared for every scenario,” Gallant said in a statement released early today.

"Overnight, the whole world saw the true face of Iran — a terrorist state that attacked the State of Israel from a distance of 1,500 km and in doing so also attempted to employ all of its proxies," Gallant said in a statement released early today.

"On the other hand, the world also saw the power of a coalition, and how Israel, together with the United States and additional partners, stood together and thwarted this attack," he said.

Airspaces reopened in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq

Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq have reopened their airspaces after closing them last night amid the Iranian attack on Israel, Reuters reported, citing Jordan and Lebanese state television and Iraq’s aviation authority.

Israel reopened its airspace at 7:30 a.m. local time Sunday (12:30 a.m. ET), though flight schedules from Tel Aviv may still be affected.

Jordan is one of the countries believed to have taken part in the coalition intercepting Iranian drones and missiles that traveled through its airspace.

Biden says he will coordinate a ‘united diplomatic response’ to Iran with G7 leaders

President Joe Biden said he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last night, reaffirming the United States’ commitment to the security of Israel.

Military forces followed Biden’s direction to help Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles, the president said. He also praised the country’s ability to fend off attacks as a sign to others who threaten the security of Israel.

“Tomorrow, I will convene my fellow G7 leaders to coordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran’s brazen attack,” Biden said. “My team will engage with their counterparts across the region. And we will stay in close touch with Israel’s leaders.”

Though no U.S. forces have been attacked, Biden said America will “remain vigilant to all threats.” He condemned the Iranian regime’s attack tonight in the “strongest possible terms.”

Iran launched over 300 projectiles, Israeli military says

Rudy Chinchilla

Israel intercepted 99% of the more than 300 projectiles launched by Iran, and is ready for “any further developments and scenarios,” Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari said.

Among the projectiles were some 30 cruise missiles, none of which made it into Israel, Hagari said in a televised statement. Only a “few” of the more than 120 ballistic missiles launched entered Israel, with the rest being intercepted, he added.

Some of the ballistic missiles hit the Nevatim air base, but they caused only minor infrastructure damage, and the base remained operational, Hagari said.

A 10-year-old girl was severely injured by shrapnel, but there were no immediate reports of other Israeli injuries or deaths, Hagari said.

“Iran did something very serious, very severe this night, as it pushed the Middle East toward escalation. We will do whatever is necessary in order to defend the citizens of the state of Israel,” he said.

Israeli Iron Dome air defense systems launch to intercept missiles fired from Iran, in central Israel on Sunday.

Booms and air raid sirens sounded across Israel and the occupied West Bank early Sunday morning, after Iran launched dozens of drones and missiles toward Israel, in an attack that marked a major escalation of conflict in the Middle East.

In Washington, President Joe Biden said U.S. forces had helped Israel down "nearly all" the drones and missiles, and pledged to convene allies to develop a unified response.

Israeli military spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said Iran fired more than 300 projectiles at Israel overnight, 99% of which were shot down, the "vast majority". Officials reported minor damage to a military base in southern Israel and one injury to a 10-year-old child, who was reported to be in critical condition.

"We will do everything we need, everything, to defend the state of Israel," Hagari said. He added that some of the launches came from Iraq and Yemen.

The Israeli War Cabinet planned to meet at lunchtime. In a statement Sunday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the U.S. does "not seek escalation" of the conflict.

G7 leaders are meeting on Sunday afternoon to coordinate on a diplomatic response to Iran's attack, and engage with officials across the Middle East. The United Nations Security Council is is also set to meet, after Israel requested the council condemn Iran's attack, and designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization.

Iran had vowed to retaliate after an airstrike on an Iranian consulate in Syria earlier this month killed seven Iranian military officials . It is the first time that Iran has launched an attack on Israel from Iranian soil, Israeli officials said.

U.S. forces in the region were active in shooting down drones, a U.S. defense official said. And interceptions by Israel's anti-missile defense system lit up the skies over populous areas including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

The Israeli emergency medical service Magen David Adom reported that a 10-year-old child had been struck in the head by shrapnel in the area of Arad, a town near the southwestern edge of the Dead Sea. Paramedics also treated about 20 people who suffered from anxiety or minor injuries experienced while seeking shelter, the service said.

Saturday's attack, which was first announced by Israeli officials around 4 p.m. ET, was staged in waves and took hours to reach Israel, officials said.

In a statement broadcast on Iranian state television, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps described the attack as a "large-scale military operation" against multiple targets inside Israel.

In a post on the social media site X, Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations wrote that the attack was a direct response to the strike on the consulate and that "the matter can be deemed concluded."

Following Tehran's overnight drone and missile attack on Sunday, Iran warned Israel of a larger attack on its territory should it retaliate, adding that Washington has been warned not to back Israeli military action.

"Our response will be much larger than tonight's military action if Israel retaliates against Iran," armed forces chief of staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri told state TV, adding that Tehran warned Washington that any backing of Israeli retaliation would result in U.S. bases being targeted.

The U.S. military was directly involved in the response, a senior U.S. defense official said. "In accordance with our ironclad commitment to Israel's security, U.S. forces in the region continue to shoot down Iranian-launched drones targeting Israel. Our forces remain postured to provide additional defensive support and to protect U.S. forces operating in the region," the official said.

Israelis were urged to take shelter

Officials in Israel had explicitly urged residents of Nevatim, Dimona and Eilat — three cities in Israel's Negev desert region — and people in the northern occupied Golan Heights to take shelter. A major Israeli air base is located near Nevatim, and an Israeli nuclear research facility is located in Dimona.

Airspace over Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon was closed late Saturday, while some airlines announced the cancellation of some flights and the re-routing of others due to the attacks. Israel and Jordan reopened their airspace on Sunday morning.

Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based militant group, said that it had staged its own attack by launching dozens of rockets toward an Israeli military base in the Golan early Sunday.

In a Saturday night address to Israelis, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country was ready for "any scenario, both defensively and offensively."

"We have determined a clear principle: Whoever harms us, we will harm them. We will defend ourselves against any threat and will do so level-headedly and with determination," Netanyahu said.

President Biden monitored the attack from the Situation Room alongside top defense and diplomatic officials. In anticipation of the attack, he had cut short a trip to Delaware in order to return to the White House.

Afterward, he spoke with Netanyahu and said Israel had "demonstrated a remarkable capacity to defend against and defeat even unprecedented attacks – sending a clear message to its foes that they cannot effectively threaten the security of Israel."

"At my direction, to support the defense of Israel, the U.S. military moved aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the region over the course of the past week" the president said. "Thanks to these deployments and the extraordinary skill of our servicemembers, we helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles."

Iran blames Israel for an earlier attack on its consulate

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei speaks on March 1 in Tehran, Iran. Iran vowed to respond after an attack on an Iranian consulate in Syria.

The attack on Israel comes four days after Iran's leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed retaliation for an April 1 strike on an Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital of Damascus. Iran said the strike killed seven members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, including two generals, and it blamed Israel for the attack. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied being behind the attack, though the Pentagon said Israel was responsible.

By Saturday, as anticipation had grown over a possible retaliation, Israeli officials warned residents living in communities near Gaza and the Lebanon border to limit the size of gatherings and to work indoors or within reach of a shelter. Schools across Israel were closed through Monday.

U.S. defense officials told NPR Saturday that the U.S. military had moved assets around the region in anticipation of an attack, including aircraft, and had shored up defensive positions for forces in the region. The top U.S. military commander in the Middle East, Gen. Michael Kurilla, arrived in Israel Thursday to coordinate with the Israeli military.

In a post on Telegram on Sunday, Hamas expressed support for Iran's attack, calling it a "natural right" and a deserved response to the Israeli strike on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria this month. The militant group called on Arab and Islamic nations to continue their backing in its fight against Israel, according to the Washington Post.

Also on Sunday, a statement by Israel's intelligence agency Mossad announced that Hamas had rejected the latest hostage deal outline, which would have led to a six week pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas. They blamed the lapse in negotiations directly on Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

The attack is a large escalation of hostilities in the region

The strike and retaliation represent an escalation of conflict in the region that many officials worldwide had expressed worry about ever since the outbreak of war between Israel and the Gaza-based militant group Hamas on Oct. 7, the day Hamas led an attack on Israel that left some 1,200 people dead.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said on Saturday that he condemned Iran's attack and was "deeply alarmed about the very real danger of a devastating region-wide escalation."

Egypt's foreign affairs ministry called Iran's attack a "dangerous escalation" and in a Saturday night statement urged "the exercise of the utmost restraint to spare the region and its people further factors of instability and tension." Jordan's Prime Minister said on Sunday any escalation in the region would lead to "dangerous paths", while United Arab Emirates foreign ministry called for the exercise of the utmost restraint to avoid dangerous repercussions.

Iran has long supplied Hamas with funds and weapons . The White House has not directly linked Iran to the Oct. 7 attack.

In the six months since Oct. 7, Israel has bombarded Gaza and conducted a devastating ground invasion that has left much of the territory in ruins and more than 33,000 Palestinians dead, according to Palestinian health officials.

The last time Iran launched a similar attack was in 2020 , when it fired ballistic missiles at the Ain al-Asad Air Base in Iraq, wounding dozens of U.S. troops, in retaliation for the killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani by a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad.

Additional reporting by NPR's Daniel Estrin and NPR's Carrie Kahn in Tel Aviv, NPR's Tom Bowman in Washington, D.C., and NPR's Jane Arraf in Amman. Alon Avital and Itay Stern contributed reporting from Tel Aviv.
