  • The operating carrier for a flight indicates which airline flies the plane. For example, a Virgin Atlantic-operated flight means the flight will be on Virgin Atlantic aircraft.

Travel to or from Cuba on flights operated by partner airlines is not eligible to earn miles.

What to Know About the Delta SkyMiles Program — Including How to Earn Status and Redeem Miles

Here’s everything you need to know about Delta's loyalty program.

How to Earn Miles

Delta Air Lines offers a frequent flier program called SkyMiles that's designed to reward loyal passengers with various benefits and privileges to enhance the travel experience.

Members of the SkyMiles program can earn miles through various activities, including booking flights with Delta and its partner airlines, as well as using co-branded credit cards. These miles, which never expire, can be redeemed for a variety of rewards, such as free flights, seat upgrades, and access to exclusive airport lounges.

The program also offers elite status tiers, including Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond Medallion, each providing additional perks like priority boarding, complimentary upgrades, and waived baggage fees.

Delta frequently offers promotions and bonuses to help members accumulate miles faster, making it easier for travelers to enjoy the program's benefits. Whether you're a frequent flier or an occasional traveler, here’s everything you need to know about the Delta SkyMiles program.

How to Sign Up

Signing up for Delta SkyMiles is a straightforward process that can be completed online through Delta's website. Visit the SkyMiles enrollment page and enter the requested personal information, including your name, contact details, and a valid email address.

Once the basic information is submitted, you’ll create a secure login and password for your SkyMiles account. Choose a strong password — your miles are essentially a form of currency, so you'll want to protect them. Additionally, you can opt-in to receive email updates and promotional offers from Delta.

After completing the enrollment, you’ll receive a unique SkyMiles number that you can use to earn and redeem miles. With a SkyMiles account activated, you’ll begin accumulating miles on Delta flights and participating partner airlines, so long as you attach that number to your bookings.

One of the primary ways to earn SkyMiles is by flying with Delta or one of its partner airlines, the majority of which are part of the SkyTeam alliance . When you book Delta-operated flights, you earn SkyMiles based on the base price of your ticket. Different elite status tiers earn varying bonus miles per dollar spent.

For example, as a general member, you earn five miles per dollar spent, while a Diamond Medallion member can earn up to 11 miles per dollar spent. These miles are accrued when you fly on Delta, SkyTeam alliance members, or other partner airlines.

Note that earning on SkyTeam alliance or partner airlines works slightly differently — miles are often granted based on a percentage of the distance flown, with a bonus for higher fare classes. For instance, a Silver Medallion member flying a round-trip business-class ticket on Air France from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport would earn 20,356 redeemable miles — 7,270 miles for the distance flown with the remaining miles a result of both a fare class and elite status bonus.

Credit Cards

Delta also offers co-branded credit cards in partnership with American Express. These cards provide numerous benefits, including earning SkyMiles with every purchase. Cardholders can earn bonus miles for spending on Delta flights and receive benefits like lounge access, priority boarding, and free checked bags.

The Delta credit card lineup includes options like the Delta SkyMiles Gold, Platinum, and Reserve cards, each with its own perks and annual fees. These cards often come with welcome bonuses, adding a significant number of miles to your account upon approval.

Delta made changes to the Skymiles program earlier this year after receiving backlash on some proposed adjustments, including lounge access.  "There's overcrowding at Delta Sky Clubs due to the success of their credit card partnerships," Gilbert Ott, director of partnerships at Point.me , tells T+L. "This is being worked on daily, and the new clubs are actually so nice now that they're worth going to."

Other Ways to Earn

  • Transfer Points: You can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points directly to Delta at a 1:1 ratio, though this is generally not recommended due to differences in point valuations.
  • Shopping Portals: Delta has an online shopping portal where you can earn SkyMiles for everyday purchases. By shopping through the portal with affiliated merchants, you can accumulate miles. The miles earned vary depending on the merchant and ongoing bonus offers.
  • Dining Programs: Delta's SkyMiles dining program allows you to earn miles when you dine at participating restaurants. You can earn additional miles by linking your credit card to your SkyMiles account and dining at eligible establishments.
  • Promotions and Partnerships: Keep an eye out for special promotions and partnerships offered by Delta, which can provide opportunities to earn bonus miles. These can include promotions with hotel chains and car rental companies.
  • Flying with Partner Airlines: Delta is a member of the SkyTeam alliance, and you can earn and redeem miles when flying with SkyTeam partner airlines. Additionally, Delta has partnerships with non-alliance airlines like Hawaiian Airlines and WestJet, providing more opportunities to earn miles.

Each Delta Medallion status tier offers progressively more benefits and privileges. The airline’s status tiers are subject to annual qualification requirements — historically a certain amount of flying plus a certain dollar spend. Starting in 2024, status will be determined only by dollar spend. Achieving higher tiers brings additional perks, such as complimentary upgrades, priority services, and bonus miles earned per dollar spent.

Delta's loyalty program underwent significant changes in 2023 that were largely poorly received by its elites. Though Delta rolled back some of those changes, additional ones will likely be announced in 2024. So if you’re gunning for status, stay up-to-date via Delta's website on the specific requirements and benefits for each status tier.

You can redeem miles for free flights, though you'll still have to pay taxes and fees. In terms of how many miles you'll need to redeem for a free flight, that varies. Delta no longer publishes award charts, but instead uses dynamic pricing for award tickets. That means the number of miles required for redemption will vary based on factors like the route, date, and cabin class. There is an upside here — passengers have the ability to use points on most days with few blackout dates, points out Ott. “There's almost always a points price, rather than binary yes or no, and upgrades are simple to process using points in the app," he says. "The price may not be ideal, but it's usually there.”

SkyMiles award tickets are fully refundable, allowing you to redeposit the miles and receive a refund of the taxes and fees if your plans change. You can also rebook an award ticket if the mileage price drops, and you’ll receive a refund of the difference in miles. Delta also offers eligible co-branded credit cardholders a 15 percent discount on award tickets for Delta-operated flights.

You can sometimes use SkyMiles to upgrade to a higher cabin class, such as Main Cabin to Comfort+ or even Delta One. These upgrades will be presented to you in the app or on the website. Complimentary upgrades are also available for elite members, with priority based on your Medallion status.

Partner Airline Redemptions

Delta is a member of the SkyTeam alliance, allowing you to redeem SkyMiles for flights on SkyTeam partner airlines, including Air France, KLM, and Korean Air. You can also redeem SkyMiles for flights on non-alliance partner airlines, such as Hawaiian Airlines and WestJet. Partner award ticket pricing is subject to dynamic pricing, and the exact number of miles needed varies based on partner, booking class, and other factors. You'll have to redeem the miles through Delta's website, not the partner airline's website.

Other Ways to Redeem Miles

In addition to flights, you can use SkyMiles for other redemption options, such as:

  • Hotel stays
  • Car rentals
  • Delta Vacations packages
  • Delta Sky Club access
  • Delta gift cards

The value of SkyMiles varies depending on the specific redemption. On average, SkyMiles are valued at around 1.2 cents per mile, but this can change due to dynamic pricing. The exact value of your miles depends on the route and cabin class.

Delta frequently runs SkyMiles flash sales, offering discounted award flights to various destinations, which can boost the value of your miles. Some sweet spots include short-haul domestic flights, where you can sometimes book for under 4,000 SkyMiles one-way with the co-branded credit card discount.

Stay informed about promotions.

Watch for Delta's frequent promotions, flash sales, and bonus mile offers. These can provide excellent opportunities to maximize the value of your SkyMiles.

Use co-branded credit cards.

Consider applying for one of Delta's co-branded credit cards, such as the Gold, Platinum, or Reserve cards from American Express. These cards offer benefits like priority boarding, free checked bags, and earning bonus miles on everyday purchases.

For some Delta Air Lines flights, booking with SkyMiles is the obvious answer. After its switch to dynamic award pricing, Delta SkyMiles awards can be some of the cheapest airline award tickets bookable with miles .

However, not every SkyMiles redemption is a good deal. Sometimes, you can get a better redemption rate when you redeem other miles for Delta flights.

Let's look at when booking Delta flights through a partner mileage program makes sense — and how you can easily generate those points.

Book short nonstop Delta flights via Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

For short, nonstop Delta flights, you can often save on Delta award flights by booking through Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.

That's because Virgin Atlantic uses a set distance-based award chart for most Delta-operated flights:

Economy rates start at 7,500 points for flights under 500 miles and increase to a still-reasonable 15,000 points for flights from 2,001 to 3,000 miles. However, Delta first-class awards are prohibitively expensive.

While 500 miles might not sound far, this covers routes like Salt Lake City to Albuquerque — which would otherwise be a nearly 10-hour drive. The 7,500-point rate through Flying Club prices at about half of the price that Delta is charging for the same award.

Longer awards can also make sense, depending on the route. For example, instead of paying 15,000 SkyMiles to fly from Atlanta to Chicago-O'Hare, you could book the same Delta award flights for 8,500 Virgin points.

Even if you don’t typically fly with Virgin Atlantic, you can stock up on Virgin Atlantic points by transferring points at a 1:1 transfer rate from the following transferable point programs:

American Express Membership Rewards .

Capital One Miles (via Virgin Red).

Chase Ultimate Rewards ®.

Citi ThankYou Points .

Bilt Rewards .

If you strike out through Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, or you're booking a connecting flight, consider the next option: Flying Blue.

Book domestic Delta flights via Flying Blue

Flying Blue is another SkyTeam mileage program that you can use to save on booking domestic Delta award flights. While Flying Blue prices Delta award flights based on the route and date, there are still some gems.

For example, take a nonstop award flight from Atlanta to Salt Lake City on Oct. 18. At the time of writing, Delta is charging 32,500 SkyMiles for economy awards on many flights that day.

delta skymiles travel partners

However, the same award flights can be booked through Flying Blue for 17,500 miles each way — albeit with slightly higher taxes and fees.

delta skymiles travel partners

Flying Blue can also be a winner for booking connecting flights to secondary cities. For example, Delta is currently charging 32,500 SkyMiles for a flight from Salt Lake City to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. But you can book award flights on the same route through Flying Blue for 19,500 miles one way.

Another advantage of booking award flights through Flying Blue is how easy it can be to accumulate miles. You can transfer points to Flying Blue from the following programs:

American Express Membership Rewards (1:1 transfer ratio).

Capital One Miles (1:1 transfer ratio).

Chase Ultimate Rewards® (1:1 transfer ratio).

Citi ThankYou Points (1:1 transfer ratio).

Bilt Rewards (1:1 transfer ratio).

Marriott Bonvoy (3:1 transfer ratio with a 5,000-mile bonus for transferring at least 60,000 Bonvoy points).

Fly Delta One to mainland Europe via Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Another time when using Virgin Atlantic Flying Club to book Delta miles makes sense is for flights to mainland Europe.

For whatever reason, Virgin Atlantic doesn't apply its distance-based award chart to these flights. Instead, awards price at 30,000 points in economy or 50,000 points in Delta One business class.

delta skymiles travel partners

These rates can lead to some extraordinary savings.

For example, this economy award flight from New York-John F. Kennedy to Berlin in November requires 30,000 Virgin points versus 70,000 Delta SkyMiles. And the savings are even more exceptional in business class: 50,000 Virgin points versus 240,000 Delta SkyMiles.

Using Aeromexico for certain domestic flights

Lastly, Aeromexico — Delta's SkyTeam partner to the south — may also come in handy when booking certain Delta award flights. That's because Aeromexico seems to have access to more award availability than other SkyTeam partners.

However, award rates are dynamically priced, meaning there can be no rhyme or reason as to when it's better to book through Aeromexico instead of Delta.

delta skymiles travel partners

While redemption rates might not seem attractive initially, factor in that these redemption rates are in kilometers instead of miles. That's why American Express Membership Rewards transfer to Aeromexico at a rate of 1 Membership Rewards point to 1.6 Premier points.

So, divide the Aeromexico cost by 1.6 if you're considering transferring AmEx points to Delta or Aeromexico.

If you're looking to save miles on Delta flights

While you won't always save when redeeming other miles for Delta flights, several of Delta's SkyTeam partners can offer award flights for much cheaper than through Delta. So, it's worth spending a few minutes checking partner loyalty programs for more affordable rates.

That's particularly true if you plan to transfer Membership Rewards points to Delta to complete a booking.

All of the alternatives we covered are also transfer partners of Membership Rewards — as well as several other major transferable point programs.

Delta SkyMiles are often discounted because of their seemingly low value on many redemptions, but there are actually a bunch of great reward options possible!

Here is all the information you need about using SkyMiles with partner airlines, ways to earn miles through credit cards, and the best redemptions currently available to book award travel with the Delta SkyMiles frequent flyer program .

Delta is part of the SkyTeam alliance and is partnered with a few other airlines that are unaffiliated with an alliance. Virgin Atlantic and LATAM are particularly popular for awards through Delta’s partnership with them.

This alliance membership and partnership with other airlines opens up even more opportunities for redemption for you.

You can search for SkyTeam award tickets and can easily redeem SkyMiles on flights with Delta Air Lines and partner carriers. Many airline partners (but not all) are available to search online. For some, you have to call Delta to confirm availability and book.

When you’re searching for availability, simply elect to view the price in miles to see how many SkyMiles it will cost to take the award flight.

Hot Tip: Look through all options because even when sorting by lowest price, cheaper options on partner airlines may be placed below Delta options, if, for instance, the partner flight miles are cheaper but taxes and charges are higher.

The 13 Best Ways To Use Your Delta SkyMiles

Since Delta doesn’t publish an official award chart anymore , it can be tough to determine the lowest price available for a given flight you want to book.

Hot Tip: When you search for award availability, you should select the 5-week flexible award option to improve your chances of finding a low-level award.

From a 5-week search, drill down to specific dates to verify availability since the calendar is not perfect. Some days may not show the cheapest option on the calendar.

Even if you don’t have flexibility, finding the lowest price will at least tell you how much of a premium you’ll be paying to fly on your ideal date and might lead you to investigate booking with other airlines instead.

Delta has imposed much higher prices on most awards booked with 21 days of travel (known as close-in bookings). Delta has also raised the lowest award prices on partners compared to travel on Delta.

For the below redemptions, the SkyMiles amount mentioned is generally accepted as the lowest level mileage price that Delta currently charges. If you randomly search on any given day, you may see significantly higher prices. However, the SkyMiles price for Delta partners will be pretty consistent.

When you search on specific dates, make sure to sort by price from the drop-down menu since that’s not the default sort option.

Delta Airbus A220 Economy Class Seat with Tray Table Down

It is actually possible to find Delta flights as low as 5,000 SkyMiles one-way on select routes like San Francisco (SFO) to Seattle (SEA).

Sometimes, these are announced as limited-time flash sales; other times, they pop up when cash ticket prices are cheap.

These low-cost flights can be a great deal, especially last minute when Delta flight prices tend to be higher. However, if you’re searching a month out on this route, you will probably see one-way prices around $89, making the redemption mediocre.

When considering transferring your American Express Membership Rewards points to Delta, there is something else you need to think about: American Express charges a fee to transfer Membership Rewards to any U.S.-based program, including Delta SkyMiles .

The fee is quite small: only 0.06 cents per point up to a maximum of $99. If Delta has award availability on a flight you want, this fee shouldn’t be enough to stop you from transferring your SkyMiles and booking the ticket, but it’s something to be aware of nonetheless.

Virgin Atlantic Airbus A350 Upper Class Seat During the Morning

Many people rave about Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class (its business class) experience, especially on the ground at London-Heathrow. For flights across the Atlantic Ocean, you can really get the full experience of its lie-flat seats and great food.

There are a few different programs that will grant you access to book award travel on Virgin Atlantic. One of the best redemptions available is to use Delta SkyMiles.

Tickets from the U.S. to London are available on both Delta and Virgin Atlantic, but you generally won’t find low-level availability for Delta’s own flights and should look to fly on Virgin Atlantic .

When you do your search on delta.com , look for VS in the corner of the box displaying the flight details. The VS indicates it’s a flight on Virgin Atlantic.

Virgin Atlantic Delta SkyMiles

Your lowest fare from any major U.S. city to London one-way in economy class is 35,000 SkyMiles or 120,000 SkyMiles in Upper Class. That’s a round-trip flight in economy for as low as 70,000 SkyMiles , even from the West Coast!

You can connect onward to anywhere else in Europe, provided there’s availability with either Virgin Atlantic or another Delta partner. Virgin Atlantic flies nonstop from Atlanta (ATL), Detroit (DTW), New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO), and a handful of other U.S. cities.

Get the greatest value out of the Upper Class experience by flying from the West Coast since your flight time will be 10.5 hours instead of 7 from the East Coast. The number of SkyMiles you’ll need to redeem your ticket is generally the same regardless of flight time.

It’s even better to fly Virgin Atlantic back to the U.S. from Europe because you’ll have access to the wonderful Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse during your stay at London Heathrow. You’ll only want to book Europe to the U.S. as part of a round-trip flight starting in the U.S. because Delta sneakily adds a huge cash surcharge for awards originating in Europe.

The new Upper Class product can be found on:

  • London-Heathrow (LHR) – Atlanta (ATL)
  • London-Heathrow (LHR) – Los Angeles (LAX)
  • London-Heathrow (LHR) – New York (JFK)
  • London-Heathrow (LHR) – Orlando (MCO)

Hot Tip: Consider signing up for Global Entry before making your journey to enjoy quickly passing through customs when you come back to the U.S. You can get the $100 fee reimbursed with numerous cards , including the Amex Platinum card.

Air France Business Class

Air France business class space is released to Air France Flying Blue members 359 days ahead of time, and the same space is generally released to Delta SkyMiles members 331 days before the departure date. Still, if you have Delta SkyMiles, you can certainly use them on Air France business class flights .

Even if Paris isn’t your final destination, you can connect onward to most other areas of Europe and beyond.

Flights from the U.S. to Europe in economy can be booked for as low as 35,000 SkyMiles one-way, while one-way in business class will cost 120,000 SkyMiles. Just keep in mind that taxes and fees will be around $6 when departing the U.S. and $350 when returning to the U.S. from Europe.

Aerolineas Argentinas economy

In 2012, Aerolíneas Argentina joined the SkyTeam alliance and GOL joined Delta as a non-alliance partner. There are limited flights directly from the U.S. (only New York (JFK) or Miami (MIA)), but the options within South America are numerous. Since LATAM is one of the only other airlines dominating the region, SkyMiles are very valuable for flights within South America on Aerolíneas Argentinas and GOL.

Patagonia is a very popular destination , especially for those inclined to spend time in the great outdoors. You can fly to El Calafate (FTE) in economy for 35,000 SkyMiles one-way or 100,000 SkyMiles in business class.

This flight has a layover in Buenos Aires (EZE), so if you don’t want to go all the way to Patagonia, you can fly to Buenos Aires for the same number of SkyMiles.

Aeromexico 787-9 business class

Delta’s partnership with Aeromexico is one of the few that has been relatively unaffected by several recent devaluations in Delta SkyMiles.

You can fly to Mexico or (if you’re really feeling adventurous) do a multi-city tour to Mexico and then to Europe. Mexico City (MEX) has great award availability on flights to London (LHR), Paris (CDG), and Madrid (MAD).

When the option is available, choose to view the 5-week flexible dates calendar in your search. This will help you find the lowest SkyMiles award ticket prices.

You’ll need to book your flight to Mexico, then to Europe, and finally back to the U.S. through Delta’s advanced multi-city search option. Multi-city will only let you search specific dates, and you may end up on a different airline than AeroMexico on your way back from Europe to the U.S. (e.g., Delta, Aeroflot, etc.)

If you were to put together a multi-city itinerary like this, you would pay:

  • New York (JFK) – Mexico City (MEX) one-way in economy class for 20,000 SkyMiles or in business class for 35,000 SkyMiles
  • New York (JFK) – Mexico City (MEX) – Madrid (MAD) – New York (JFK) in economy class for 90,000 SkyMiles or in business class for 170,000 SkyMiles

Hot Tip: When putting together a multi-city itinerary with Delta, it makes sense to search both the entire itinerary as a multi-city search and each segment individually. In some cases, the price may be better booking one-way versus the other.

China Airlines A350 Business Class Cabin View

China Airlines is consistently praised for its business class product. China Airlines is generally thought to offer one of the best airline experiences.

When using your Delta SkyMiles, you have the ability to book China Airlines (based in Taipei), China Eastern (based in Shanghai), and Xiamen Airlines (based in Xiamen) one-way in business class for only 120,000 SkyMiles or economy class for only 50,000 SkyMiles.

All of these airlines can be searched on delta.com for award availability. However, results for China Eastern frequently display award availability that isn’t there (it will have an error if you try to purchase), and connecting itineraries often incorrectly price each segment additively rather than as a single one-way.

Calling Delta won’t help with availability, though sometimes the agents can fix incorrect pricing. Using another SkyTeam program like Air France/KLM Flying Blue or Korean Air SKYPASS is a backup to booking these airlines.

With China Airlines and Xiamen Airlines, you usually won’t encounter these pricing and ticketing problems.

Korean Air A321neo Prestige Class

If you want to tack on an extra destination to your trip, flying from Japan to Australia or New Zealand with Korean Air in business class is a great way to experience a taste of luxury for fewer SkyMiles .

Overall, you’ll end up with about 13 hours of flight time, plus a layover in Korean Air’s Seoul-Incheon hub with a great lounge to visit. It is possible to work in a longer layover and have time to head out into Seoul for a day of sightseeing as well.

Vietnam Airlines 787-9 business class seat

Vietnam Airlines is part of SkyTeam, which means you have the option to redeem your Delta SkyMiles for flights to and within Vietnam .

If you were already planning on flying to Japan, you can add a side trip to Vietnam from Japan for only 17,500 SkyMiles in economy or 45,000 SkyMiles in business class on Vietnam Airlines.

Korean Air Prestige Sleeper Seat

Availability might not be the easiest to find, but if you can get it, you surely won’t regret using your Delta SkyMiles to get to Guam, one of the most unique Pacific Islands .

You’ll save a boatload of money by redeeming SkyMiles for your flights — economy class redemptions from the U.S. start at 35,000 SkyMiles and business class redemptions start at 80,000 SkyMiles.

There’s a good chance you’ll end up flying Korean Air to Guam, and their business class will ensure that you hit the ground running.

Garuda Indonesia business class flight attendant

Garuda Indonesia’s long-haul footprint is shrinking. Known for its exceptional first class product, this airline also has a business class product worth trying.

For 95,000 SkyMiles plus minimal taxes and fees, you can fly nearly 14 hours on Garuda’s only ultra-long-haul route from Jakarta (CGK) to Amsterdam (AMS).

You’ll pay around $30 in taxes and fees, which will definitely keep your out-of-pocket costs low. With generous business class award availability, you’ll be all set to try one of the world’s most underrated business class products in no time. This specific route is operated by a 777-300ER, and it is one of the only ones that has a 2-class cabin: business and economy.

Garuda Indonesia’s business class seats are arranged in a staggered 1-2-1 configuration, which is similar to that of Asiana Airlines.

Delta One Suites A350-900 rear view

Delta has a number of nonstop routes to Europe with Delta One Suites , but to find flights with loads of award availability fit for family travel in one of the hottest business class products on some of the most lucrative airline routes takes quite a bit of work.

If your travel dates are flexible, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to take your entire family to Europe on Delta One Suites for as little as 120,000 SkyMiles per person. Keep in mind that these tickets are generally very difficult to find, but those who work diligently can redeem 120,000 SkyMiles instead of 320,000 SkyMiles per person.

Here are some routes to focus your search on:

  • Atlanta (ATL) – Paris (CDG)
  • Detroit (DTW) – Amsterdam (AMS)
  • Minneapolis (MSP) – London-Heathrow (LHR)

Saudia Airlines business class

Another amazing use of SkyMiles is to fly to the Maldives in business class on a number of transpacific or transatlantic routes. For upwards of 20 to 24 hours in business class seats, it’s a hugely worthwhile redemption to consider — you just need to be creative about finding routes to the Maldives !

Check out some great example redemptions:

  • Chicago (ORD) – Rome (FCO) – Malé (MLE) on ITA business class
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Paris (CDG) – Malé (MLE) on Air France business class
  • Miami (MIA) – Moscow (SVO) – Malé (MLE) on Aeroflot business class
  • New York (JFK) – Milan (MXP) – Malé (MLE) on Delta One and ITA business class
  • San Francisco (SFO) – Shanghai (PVG) – Malé (MLE)  on China Eastern business class
  • Washington, D.C. (IAD) – Riyadh (RUH) – Malé (MLE)  on Saudia business class

Using Your Delta SkyMiles: The Delta Award Chart

Delta currently has a revenue-based award program , but it still has a somewhat zone-based award program for flight redemptions.

The Delta award chart was removed at the beginning of 2015, so it is sometimes a challenge to determine which destinations are in what zone as well as the prices to various zones.

Though overall Delta still has a zone-based program, some flight options don’t quite fit this mold, which makes it very difficult to make sure you are getting a good deal for your flights.

As a general rule, Delta sticks pretty close to its old award chart for flights on Delta. For partner airline flights, the prices have increased across the board. Some regions such as Southeast Asia have seen big increases on all business class awards.

This article outlines the best ways to redeem your Delta SkyMiles for flights once you’ve earned enough of them . When you use your Delta SkyMiles and compare the pricing offered to the lowest cash price available, you can be confident that your SkyMiles can get you great value.

Specify carrier and fare bucket by typing something like ke.f between the airport codes; that means that the segment is on Korean Air in the F fare bucket. Omit the carrier code to default to DL, such that y means Y on Delta. So, jfk-k-atl-ke.c-icn means New York JFK to Atlanta on a K fare on Delta, then onward to Seoul Incheon on Korean Air on a C fare.

To see your cost per mile for a trip, type the fare too. For example: lga-mdw-lga $199 . Revenue-based redeemable miles will be estimated for all-Delta trips. If you specify more than one dollar amount on the line, only the first will be used for this calculation, since Delta does not give you miles for government taxes and fees. The sum will be used for the other costs per mile.

This tool does not currently take into account Delta exception fares such as consolidator and cruise fares which can still earn redeemable miles based on distance flown.

If you received bonus miles include that amount as well. For example: jfk-lax-jfk 500 would specify a trip from New York to Los Angeles that you got a 500-mile redeemable miles bonus for.

Delta's guide to miles earning on its own tickets is here and with partners is here . I make my best guess, but remember that this website is not affiliated in any way with Delta Air Lines . No guarantee of accuracy is made; Delta is the final authority on how many miles they actually award. A discrepancy of a few miles can be expected because I probably round numbers a bit differently than Delta does. If you get a really incorrect result, I'd appreciate hearing about it so I can fix it (I'm @michaelpanik on Twitter; or email me ).

It’s back by popular demand — Delta and American Express unveiled the next iteration of the limited-edition Boeing 747 Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card on the heels of the overwhelming response from Card Members when first launched in 2022 .

The new limited-edition cards are cloud-white in color and made from two Delta Boeing 747 aircraft 1 that were retired after more than 27 years of service and feature each plane’s history, including their first and last flights, tail number and number of miles flown.

The new limited-edition Delta SkyMiles Reserve Cards are cloud-white in color and made from two Delta Boeing 747 aircrafts that were retired after more than 27 years of service and feature each plane’s history, including their first and last flights, tail number and number of miles flown.

The card is available exclusively for new and existing Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business Card Members from April 25 through June 5, 2024, while supplies last. The new design comes after recent enhancements made to the Delta SkyMiles American Express Cards to improve the travel experience and deliver everyday value to Members, both in the air and on the ground.

“At Delta, innovation and experience are at the core of everything we do,” said Prashant Sharma, V.P. of Loyalty at Delta Air Lines. “Each card carries the legacy of countless journeys and embodies the spirit of exploration that drives our customers and all of us at Delta. When combined with the recently upgraded benefits, these cards provide a nod to our storied past and symbolize the elevated experiences our customers can expect in their future travels.”

In 2022, Delta and American Express launched the first iteration of the limited-edition Boeing Delta 747 Card design, one of the most iconic airplanes in aviation history. The new design is made with 33% metal from a retired Delta Boeing 747 plane and has a white glossy finish, which is inspired by clouds.

American Express Reserve Card

“We’re bringing back one of our most popular Card designs ever with a new look honoring the ‘Queen of the Skies,’” said Jon Gantman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cobrand Product Management at American Express. “Given the strong response from customers with our first Card design, we wanted to find another exciting opportunity for aviation enthusiasts and Card Members to have a piece of aviation history in their wallets.”

The Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business American Express Cards offer premium travel benefits for Delta loyalists, including an enhanced Companion Certificate each year after renewal 2 , an MQD Headstart that helps you get closer to Status, miles accelerators, access to exclusive reservations through Global Dining Access by Resy 3 , and more.

2 The Companion Ticket requires payment of the government-imposed taxes and fees of no more than $80 for roundtrip domestic flights and no more than $250 for roundtrip international flights (both for itineraries with up to four flight segments). Baggage charges and other restrictions apply. See terms and conditions for details.

Insider Today

Delta and American Express are re-introducing a popular limited-edition Boeing 747 metal credit card made from two of Delta's retired Boeing 747s.

Delta began flying its first Boeing 747-400 in 1990 and stopped transporting passengers on 747s in November 2017. Now, select Delta cardholders can own a piece of the "Queen of the Skies."

Starting today, this special card will be exclusive to the two high-end Delta cobranded products, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card .

The new card pays homage to the history of the two retired Delta 747s by featuring the dates of the aircraft's first and last flights, flight number, and number of miles flown.

The limited-edition card design is made with 33% metal from retired Delta Boeing 747 aircraft and will be available through June 5, or while supplies last. Both new and existing Delta Reserve cardholders are eligible for the new cards.  New cardholders can select the limited-edition design while completing their card application, while existing cardholders can reach out to Amex customer service by phone or via the American Express phone app.

Delta and Amex launched the first version of the limited-edition 747 credit card in 2022. Twice as many cards will be produced this time, Amex said, due to the popularity of the previous offering.

"After seeing how passionate our card members were when we launched in 2022, we are bringing the design back, but this time, with twice as many cards from two retired Boeing Delta 747 airplanes," an Amex spokesperson told Business Insider via email.

Both the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card were refreshed earlier in 2024 and come with enhancements including statement credits, a jump-start toward earning Delta elite status — and, yes, higher annual fees.

Both cards offer complimentary access to Delta Sky Club lounges when traveling on a same-day, Delta-marketed or Delta-operated flight. Starting Feb. 1, 2025, Delta Reserve cardholders will be capped at visiting Sky Clubs 15 days a year.

Cardholders of either card also get unlimited access to American Express Centurion Lounges when flying Delta with a ticket purchased on a U.S.-issued American Express card.

Earlier in 2024, Delta added a few other perks, including additional statement credits each year for select purchases. New credits include a Resy credit for U.S. restaurants that partner with Resy, a rideshare credit for eligible airport rides on specific operators, and a Delta Stays credit to use on prepaid hotel and vacation rental bookings through delta.com.

For travelers seeking Delta elite status, the cards also come with an automatic 2,500 Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs) each year and 1 MQD for every $10 you spend.

The Delta Reserve credit cards aren't the only co-branded airline cards available for consumers. All told, there are seven total Delta credit cards in partnership with Amex.

How to redeem Delta SkyMiles for maximum value

Kyle Olsen

Since Delta eliminated its award charts in 2015, the SkyMiles program has become notably more unpredictable and, at times, outrageously expensive. With business-class flights on long-haul routes often priced at over 450,000 SkyMiles, it's understandable to feel like your SkyMiles balance holds little value.

But if you have a stockpile of Delta miles, they are far from worthless . There are still excellent redemptions available, particularly during the carrier's award sales.

So, let's explore some strategies for maximizing the value of your Delta SkyMiles.

Redeem on Delta flights

delta skymiles travel partners

You can use your Delta SkyMiles to book Delta, Delta Connection and Delta Shuttle flights. Since Delta uses dynamic pricing, award rates can vary significantly. For example, in November, one-way main cabin award rates from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) range between 16,000 and 49,000 miles.

delta skymiles travel partners

Even though Thanksgiving travel skews award prices over these dates, significant price volatility is normal. If you want to maximize your SkyMiles, flexibility is important.

Taxes and fees are generally reasonable on Delta tickets. Expect to pay $5.60 per person in taxes and fees on most domestic tickets and international tickets departing the U.S. However, Delta adds carrier-imposed surcharges on many awards that start outside the U.S., most notably those originating in Europe .

Keep an eye out for SkyMiles deals

A great option for redeeming Delta miles is taking advantage of SkyMiles deals. These deals typically apply to specific city pairs, so it may be necessary to book positioning flights to fully maximize these promotions.

Last year, Delta offered a flash sale with round-trip flights for just 5,000 SkyMiles . The airline recently offered round-trip airfare to Auckland Airport (AKL) from most major U.S. airports for just 37,400 SkyMiles round-trip.

If you have no immediate use for your SkyMiles, you may be best off saving them for the next big SkyMiles deal. Just be sure to keep an eye on Delta's SkyMiles deals page .

Save at least 15% with select Delta credit cards

If you have an eligible Delta credit card , you can save 15% on Delta-operated award flights when you use your miles and pay the taxes and fees with the card. This can be a great option to reduce the price you pay on Delta award tickets — and a major reason to open (and keep) a Delta card in your wallet.

Rebook when prices drop (or cancel when your plans change)

Once you've used your miles on a Delta flight, be sure to keep your eyes on the award rates. As long as you're not on a basic economy ticket, Delta offers the ability to rebook flights when prices drop, and you'll receive the mileage difference back in your account. You should even be able to do this right from the Delta App.

And if your plans change, you should be able to cancel your flight for a full refund of both the miles and the taxes and fees — again, unless you're on a basic economy ticket.

Redeem on partner flights

delta skymiles travel partners

Delta is a member of the SkyTeam alliance and has three non-alliance airline partners. This gives you more flexibility to redeem your SkyMiles on various airlines and routes across the globe. Here is the complete list of Delta's airline partners:

SkyTeam partners

  • Aerolinas Argentinas
  • China Airlines
  • China Eastern Airlines
  • Czech Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • ITA Airways
  • Kenya Airways
  • Middle East Airlines
  • Vietnam Airlines
  • Virgin Atlantic

Non-alliance partners

  • Hawaiian Airlines

Although there are no online award charts, partner awards generally have a specific price range. For example, one-way business-class airfare from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Mexico City International Airport (MEX) ranges between 42,000 and 44,000 miles.

delta skymiles travel partners

Another great option is WestJet-operated flights from the U.S. to Canada. Round-trip award tickets in economy class still clock in at 25,000 miles plus ~$60 in taxes and fees, and availability is relatively widespread, especially when you book in advance.

delta skymiles travel partners

These flights routinely cost more than $500, giving you a redemption value of more than 2 cents per miles.

Delta also has some appealing non-U.S. partner sweet spots.

For example, Dubai International Airport (DXB) to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) on Air France business class generally costs around 42,500 miles plus 120 United Arab Emirates Dirham (around $32). In comparison, Tokyo's Narita International Airport (NRT) or Haneda Airport (HND) to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) costs 35,000 miles plus up to 6,910 Japanese Yen (around $50) for a connecting business-class Korean Air or China Airlines flight.

delta skymiles travel partners

Delta can increase these rates at any time, and they have done so on multiple occasions . To obtain the current award price, you will need to contact Delta directly or search the website.

While Delta has tried to improve its website to display partner awards, it may still have limitations, particularly when booking mixed-cabin itineraries. The website often prioritizes Delta-operated flights, which may not be ideal if you have specific flight requirements. We recommend searching for flights segment by segment and being prepared to call Delta if the website doesn't offer the desired trip options.

Redeem for upgrades

delta skymiles travel partners

You can also use your SkyMiles for upgrades to a higher class of service. If you have a confirmed Delta-marketed and operated flight, you should have the option to pay cash or use miles to upgrade your flight directly on Delta's website.

If you redeem your miles for an upgrade using this method, you'll generally get around 1 cent per mile, which is lower than our 1.2 cent valuation of Delta SkyMiles . This could be a viable option if you have a surplus of SkyMiles and no immediate plans for their use. However, we generally recommend prioritizing award flight redemptions, as discussed in previous sections.

You can also use Delta miles to upgrade specific flights operated by Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic or Aeromexico. This option is subject to fare class requirements and is available only on select routes each partner operates. For more details, please refer to Delta's " upgrade with miles " page.

You'll also want to make sure there's upgrade inventory available. Fortunately, all four partner airlines mentioned above publish business-class award inventory on ExpertFlyer (owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures), allowing easy searching and setting up alerts if the desired seats are unavailable when you book your flight.

Redeem for Delta Vacations

delta skymiles travel partners

Delta Vacations recently enhanced redemption rates for SkyMiles members looking to use their rewards for vacations. You'll get at least 1.15 cents when you use your miles to cover a Delta Vacation.

In practice, however, you can occasionally find better redemption rates.

A two-day escape from Los Angeles to Hawaii with lodging at the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, Waikiki Beach costs $1,797.90. Alternatively, you can redeem 143,832 SkyMiles to book this vacation (a 1.25-cent redemption rate).

delta skymiles travel partners

In this example, Delta also includes a round-trip transfer from the airport to the hotel, whether you pay with miles or cash.

How to earn Delta miles quickly

delta skymiles travel partners

You'll need to have SkyMiles to take advantage of the redemptions mentioned above. Fortunately, there are several ways to increase your balance. One of the simplest ways to earn Delta miles is by using Delta's cobranded American Express credit cards (terms apply). Here are some of the current welcome offers available for these cards:

  • Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card : Earn 40,000 bonus miles after you spend $2,000 in purchases on your new card in your first six months. The card has a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150 (see rates and fees ).
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card : Earn 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 in purchases on your new card in your first six months. The card has a $350 annual fee (see rates and fees ).
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card : Earn 60,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 in purchases on your new card in your first six months. The card has a $650 annual fee (see rates and fees ).
  • Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card : Earn 55,000 Bonus Miles after you spend $4,000 in purchases on your new card in your first six months of card membership. The card has a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then a $150 annual fee (see rates and fees ).
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card : Earn 65,000 bonus miles after spending $6,000 in purchases in the first six months of card membership The card has a $350 annual fee (see rates and fees ).
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card : Earn 75,000 Bonus miles after spending $10,000 in purchases in the first six months of card membership. The card has a $650 annual fee (see rates and fees ).

Remember that any of these cards include access to the TakeOff 15 benefit , which will save you at least 15% on Delta-operated award flights.

You can also transfer American Express Membership Rewards points from cards like the American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express to Delta SkyMiles at a 1:1 ratio. However, you'll be subject to an excise tax offset fee . And Marriott Bonvoy points transfer to Delta SkyMiles at a 3:1 ratio.

Bottom line

Although the value of Delta SkyMiles has decreased in recent years, there are still excellent deals to be found. While the program has been moving toward a redemption value of 1 cent per mile, you can still surpass that, especially with SkyMiles deals and Delta Vacations.
