Depeche modeâs first tour in over five years kicks off march 23, 2023 in sacramento, ca.
Following the rapturous reception to their new single âGhosts Again,” Depeche Mode have added a new Fall leg of North American tour dates to the Memento Mori Tour, which will support Memento Mori, their forthcoming studio album due out March 24. With the addition of these 29 new shows, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2020 inductees will now set out on a colossal 75-date tour â their 19th tour and their first in over five years.
The Live Nation-presented tour begins March 23 with a limited North American run featuring stops at New Yorkâs Madison Square Garden, Chicagoâs United Center, and Torontoâs Scotiabank Arena. The band will then embark on their European stadium tour on May 16, with noted stops including the Stade de France in Paris, Berlinâs Olympic Stadium, Milanâs San Siro Stadium, and Londonâs Twickenham Stadium.
Following the end of the European summer run, the newly added tour dates bring the band back to North America in the Fall, with the tour stopping in Mexico City at Foro Sol before returning to the US and Canada. Newly announced tour stops include Austinâs Moody Center, Vancouverâs Rogers Arena, additional New York City shows at Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center, Seattleâs Climate Pledge Arena and more, and concluding with a multi-night run in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum and Crypto.com Arena.
Pre-sales will kick off with a Fan Pre-sale on Tuesday, February 21, with the general on sale beginning Friday, February 24 at 10am local time. The tour is on track to be one of Depeche Modeâs largest to date and is also well on its way to being one of the largest worldwide tours of 2023. The tour will feature Depeche Mode favorites and rarities, alongside new songs from Memento Mori, including the new single âGhosts Again,â which has been heralded as âa melancholic and joyful odeâ (Vulture), âhypnoticâ (Rolling Stone), and âa gorgeous, haunting songâ (Revolver). Depeche Mode Detail New Album, Share Video for New Song âGhosts Againâ: Watch
By Madison Bloom and Rob Arcand
Depeche Mode have shared more details about their upcoming album. Memento Mori will be released on March 24 via Columbia . The album will include a new single called â Ghosts Again ,â which arrives with its own music video. In the visual, Dave Gahan and Martin Gore play chess on an urban rooftop and perform together in a cemetery. Find the video, along with the artwork and tracklist for the album, below.
The band revealed that a new album was on the way last fall, roughly five months after the death of founding member Andy âFletchâ Fletcher. âWe started work on this project early in the pandemic, and its themes were directly inspired by that time,â Martin Gore said of the record at the time. âAfter Fletchâs passing, we decided to continue as weâre sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.â
Dave Gahan added: âFletch would have loved this album. Weâre really looking forward to sharing it with you soon, and we canât wait to present it to you live at the shows next year.â Memento Mori follows Depeche Modeâs 2017 LP, Spirit .
Along with teasing the new full-length last year, Depeche Mode announced a slate of North American and European tour dates, kicking off March 23 in Sacramento, California. An arena tour of Europe follows, stretching into August. The band has also been enlisted for Primavera 2023 .

Watch Depeche Mode perform new single ‘Ghosts Again’ live for the first time
It's the band's first live performance since bandmate Andy Fletcher died last year
Depeche Mode have performed new single ‘Ghosts Again’ live for the first time – check out the moment below.
- READ MORE:Â Depeche Mode tell us about emotional new album âMemento Moriâ and losing Andy Fletcher
Earlier this week, Depeche Mode returned with the dramatic new single and announced details of their long-awaited new album âMemento Moriâ.
The song had its first live outing yesterday (February 11) at SanRemo Song Festival in Italy and marked the first time the band had performed live since the death of bandmate Andy Fletcher last year.Â
Speaking about the new song this week, frontman Dave Gahan said: âTo me, âGhosts Againâ just captures this perfect balance of melancholy and joy.” Martin Gore added: âItâs not often that we record a song that I just donât get sick of listening to â Iâm excited to be able to share it.â
Due for release on March 24, the synth-pop legendsâ 15th upcoming studio album âMemento Moriâ comes previewed by âGhosts Againâ and its video by their legendary longtime visual collaborator Anton Corbijn .
You can watch the band perform the song live below:

Speaking to NME recently, Gahan noted that although work on âMemento Moriâ started before Fletcherâs death, the latter did not record any material for it.
âHe never got to hear any of it, which is really sad to me because there are songs on this record where I know heâd be like, âThis is the best thing weâve had in years.â I can hear his voice,â he said. âI can also hear him saying, âDoes every song have to be about death?!ââ
He also reflected on what it would be like performing live without Fletcher.
âI donât know what thatâs going to be like and I donât know what thatâs going to be like without Fletch there,” he told NME. “Listening to him ranting and shouting down the hallways before a show, saying the wineâs not right, all the shit that Fletch would do which I already miss a lot.â
Asked if Fletcherâs passing might change the way he performs on the upcoming tour, Gahan replied:Â âNo. Look, Fletch did his thing on stage but he actually didnât do that much musically! But he was Fletch, and that wonât be there anymore. We canât replace that. We canât put another Fletch there. He was one of a kind.
âMost of my mates when they come to the shows, they say âFuck, I canât take my eyes off the geezer over there! What is he doing?â That was part of Fletchâs thing and he did it really well, so we wonât try and fill that hole.â

Ghosts Again
" Ghosts Again " is a song from the 2023 album Memento Mori by Depeche Mode . The song's music video premiered on YouTube on 9 February 2023 at 4:00PM GMT.

Initial snippets of the song were heard as part of the Berlin press conference to announce Memento Mori on 4 October 2022. On 8 February 2023, the day prior to the song's music video debut, the song leaked on the internet as a 256kbps MP3 file, with a duration of 3:31 compared to the album version's 3:58.
Dave Gahan told Zane Lowe : "When I first heard that song, I was like, 'Okay. I'm in.' The demo made me feel instant joy. I remember dancing around my living room, and my daughter came in and she was looking at me weird, like, 'What's going on?' I was like, 'Don't you love this?' She kind of started bopping along with me and she was like, 'I get it. It's a really good song.'"
Engineer Marta Salogni told Sound On Sound : "With âGhost Againâ, I started with the drums, because the track is based on a drum loop from Martinâs demo, and then we built on that. I would have started by making the loop sound good, because that is one of the first things that gets you hooked in, and then the bass, which is quite driving. The bass comes from the Moog modular, and the drums are made up of different elements, including the loop, a Roland TR-606 drum machine, and the Eurorack Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas module. We also layered the guitar a few times. It was played by Martin, and we recorded it through two amps and a DI. The guitar also went through tape machines, the Korg MS-20 used as an effect, the Mu-Tron, a Dimension-D and an AMS RMX16, all outboard."
On 26 January 2023 at 5:00PM GMT at https://www.depechemode.com/mementomori/ , a 7-day countdown timer began, counting down to 5:00PM GMT on 2 February 2023, after which 'Ghosts Again' was announced and another 7-day countdown timer began, counting down to 5:00PM GMT on 9 February 2023, at which time the song's music video debuted.

Wasted feelings
Broken meanings
Time is fleeting
See what it brings
Helloes, goodbyes
A thousand midnights
Lost in sleepless lullabies
Heaven's dreaming
Thoughtless thoughts, my friends
We know we'll be ghosts again
Sunday's shining
Silver linings
Weightless hours
All my flowers
A place to hide
The tears that you cried
Everybody says goodbye
Faith is sleeping
Lovers, in the end
Whisper we'll be ghosts again

“To me, ‘Ghosts Again’ just captures this perfect balance of melancholy and joy,” Gahan said in a statement. Added Gore, “It’s not often that we record a song that I just don’t get sick of listening to – I’m excited to be able to share it.”
The reflective, mid-tempo jam precedes the duo’s upcoming 15th studio album, Memento Mori , which is set to be released March 24 via Columbia Records. The LP will be the band’s first full-length since 2017’s Spirit , as well as the first since the passing of keyboardist and co-founder Andy Fletcher in May 2022.
The rollout for “Ghosts Again” was fraught with controversy among Depeche Mode’s fanbase. It all started with a countdown clock on the band’s social media accounts and website, seemingly pointing to the track’s release last Friday (Feb. 3), but instead was revealed that eager listeners would have to wait nearly another full week for the song’s grand unveiling.

Depeche Mode, Ghosts Again | Track Review đ”
Published by the musical hype on february 13, 2023 february 13, 2023.
Following the loss of Fletch, Depeche Mode makes a stellar return in 2023 with âGhost Again,â the promo single from their first LP in six years ( Memento Mori ).
I t has been six years since veteran English electronic-driven band đ Depeche Mode released a new album. Of course, extended hiatuses between albums by đ Dave Gahan and company have been commonplace through the bandâs career. Still, the arrival of đż Memento Mori (March 24, 2023) marks the collectiveâs longest span between LPs (đż Spirit arrived in March 2017). Sadly, in 2022, longtime keyboardist đ Andy âFletchâ Fletcher passed away â a huge loss for the band. đ” âGhosts Againâ , written by đŒ â Martin Gore and Richard Butler , and slickly produced by đ James Ford , arrives as the promo single from Memento Mori . By the way, memento mori in Latin means remember you must die . Yikes!

I wasnât sure what to expect but DM always seems to find a way to reinvent themselves regardless of popular trends. Even when theyâve indicated specific influences taken from Delta Blues, theyâve stayed within their lanes pure to their own, unique sound palettes. Their music is honest and sincere, provocative at times and often delicately personal. Furthermore, DM always seems to been in tune with whatâs going on in the world and have been a sort of beacon voice with what the rest of us are yearning to express ourselves.
The first time I heard their music was in 1984 at an underage club. The music video, People Are People was being played on monitors surrounding the dance floor and I just stood their observing the Industrial motif and asking myself, what the hell are they using to produce those sounds? That same year (or maybe it was spring of 85), I saw them at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois for their Some Great Reward tour. Ironically, I found out later in life, this was also the venue that grandparents on both sides of my family had gone to dance and listen to the big bands of 1940âs era. Anyways, with DM, I had already purchased the album from mowing lawns, A Broken Frame but had not yet possessed, Some Great Reward. I was confused. I had no idea at 14-15 years of age where they were at sonically until I saw them perform. After that, I sorted it all out and have been a fan ever since. To this day, I can remember the fever they bestowed upon me from the first experience seeing them live. I can remember seeing this bizarre looking keyboard called an Emulator where some of the the sounds were coming from and I wanted one, really really bad. LOL! Nowadays, I enjoy a lot of other artists but there hasnât been a band that had quite the initial impact on me as Depeche Mode did in my youth. Bravo! I canât wait to hear the rest of the album.

I thought it was a very unmemorable song that didn’t do anything for me at all. Depeche mode just keeps getting more boring as the years go on. This proves that. I don’t need to write 20 paragraphs for one song that wasn’t even mediocre.

Great song . The more I’ve played it the more i like it looking forward to the new album and of course the tour. , There’s a reason depeche mode have been going for over 40 years .probably one of the most underrated band ever.

Depeche Mode, O2 review: An immensely moving return after Andy Fletcherâs death
T he spectre of death has been central to the dark core of Depeche Mode âs stadium-sized synth-pop for 40 years, but that didnât make it any less shocking when it finally arrived for real. The sudden passing of keyboardist and band cheerleader Andy âFletchâ Fletcher in 2022 aged just 60 â just six weeks before recording started on 15 th album Memento Mori , a stylish, elegant record that was already particularly preoccupied with mortality â still obscures all.
On the opening night of the Basildon bandâs first full UK tour in seven years , his presence â a reliably good-natured counterpoint to the absurd flamboyance of frontman Dave Gahan and more business-like presence of guitarist/keyboardist Martin Gore â was much missed. It also cast their material in a different, present light.
The themes explored by Gore, the bandâs chief songwriter, which seemed subversive in their younger years, have (with the exception of depraved sex) taken on a strange type of poignancy in their advanced stage. Frayed relationships, internal struggle, faith, redemption, control, regret, and death â frontman Dave Gahan embodied all in a two-hour set that veered from brooding to blistering.
But they came with a heightened emotional truth. âEverything seems hollow/ when you watch another angel die,â Gahan sang, two songs in on new track âWagging Tonguesâ, where the poetic licence suddenly felt all too real. The albumâs lead single âGhosts Againâ, a beautifully restrained piece of melodic electronica, was intensely affecting.
It was hard not to marvel at how much Depeche Mode have managed to succeed at such scale. With over 100 million albums sold, and more than 30 years on from the world-shaking album Violator , this is their biggest ever tour. That albumâs huge hits â the electro-blues-inflected âPersonal Jesusâ and stately ballad âEnjoy The Silenceâ, both of which sounded suitably arena-filling with the formerâs slow-build opening and the latterâs disco-tinged extension â fit snugly into the rock canon. But not much else about their sound suggests mass appeal. Depeche Mode often feel cold, ominous, metallic and weird â in the case of the wavy âPolicy of Truthâ and the seedy âStrippedâ, they were often all at once.
Yet buried beneath the abstractions is a keen pop sense. âJust Canât Get Enoughâ, from 1981 and written by original member Vince Clarke, who soon left to form Erasure , is joyful synth-pop heaven but very much an exception (âare you ready to have some fun now?â Gahan said before the song was played at the start of the encore by way of recognition). More representative was the agitated âNever Let Me Down Againâ, a pop song despite itself.

But Goreâs pop sensibilities are astute: when he took over vocals and sang S&M ode âStrangeloveâ accompanied by just keyboards, it sounded like a bastardised torch song.
Of course, Gahan is key to the appeal. Now in his sixties, he remains impressively vampiric: rake thin, with slicked-back hair, in his black waistcoat and white shirt he resembled a cross between a cast member from What We Do in the Shadows and a rebel snooker player as he shimmied, pirouetted and arse-wiggled in a ridiculous yet deeply committed fashion.
If that was to be expected, his public displays of affection towards Gore were perhaps not. Having spent decades mired in the traditional mistrusting frontman vs songwriter battle for supremacy, they have found friendship in the trauma of Fletcherâs death. Gahan gushed over Goreâs voice and talent, sang into his eyes; they even high-fived during âEnjoy the Silenceâ. Given whatâs happened, watching them embrace and hug tightly, with genuine smiles, after performing âCondemnationâ together on the B-stage during the encore was an incredibly moving moment.

Depeche Mode, Still Mourning, Return With Tour and New Album âMemento Moriâ
By Kory Grow
During the peak of the pandemic, Depeche Mode ‘s members found themselves simultaneously making sense of Covid’s widespread loss while trying to appreciate life in the moment. Those two themes kept popping up when frontman Dave Gahan and singer and multi-instrumentalist Martin Gore were writing lyrics for what would become their 15th album. They embraced this idea by calling the album Memento Mori .
“The direct translation [for ‘memento mori’] is, ‘Remember that you must die,'” Gahan says via phone from Berlin, a few days before the band’s Tuesday press conference announcing Memento Mori . “A lot of the songs are going into that place of reminding ourselves that our time is fleeting, and you got to make the best of it — in a positive way.” Gore says he first heard the Latin phrase from a friend. “I just thought, ‘What a great album title for the songs that had been written already,'” he says.
Before they could get in the studio, though, the title took on far greater meaning for Gahan and Gore. On May 26, Andy “Fletch” Fletcher, who co-founded Depeche Mode and played synthesizers and bass in the group since 1980, died naturally of an aortic dissection. Did they second-guess the title after Fletch’s death? “I think it cemented it, if anything,” Gore says.
“Obviously, everybody will think that all of the songs were quickly written after Andy died,” Gore continues. “But everything was planned and ready to go. Unfortunately, Andy passed away when he was really looking forward to getting started with us. So I like the idea of ‘memento mori’ in a more positive way, in a ‘Live each day and make the most of your time here.'”

Even now, the two musicians are still making sense of their bandmate’s absence. “You don’t always get to say goodbye,” Gahan says. “With this, it was just one of those things where all of a sudden, Martin and I are sitting in a pew in a church together, and Fletch is not here anymore, just like that.”
“It’s obviously really hard to lose your closest friend,” Gore says. “Andy was there with me from way before the band and I feel like he was the one in the trenches with me the whole way. So it’s very tough.”
But Gore feels his bandmate would have wanted Depeche Mode to continue. “He was always seen as the glue of the band,” he says. “It would’ve been unthinkable for him to think that his death would’ve caused the end of the band.”

Gahan and Gore didn’t see each other face to face to work on the album until July. The singer feels that if Fletch were working on the album, he’d have joked, “Can we just stop talking about death?” “I missed that in the studio,” the singer says, “and I know Martin did, too. We felt like he was still there with us.”
The group opened the Berlin event with a short montage, showing close-ups of music gear as echoey, undeniably Depeche Mode music plays in the background. The soundtrack had a throbbing, fuzzy synth bass line and operatic vocals. Eventually, the camera pulled out to show the musicians together in the studio. Eventually, Gahan’s voice enters and he sings, “We know we’ll be ghosts again.”
Neither Gahan nor Gore feel ready to name any of Memento Mori’s song titles — days before the Berlin event, they’re not even quite sure what the final titles are for the musical selections they’re playing — but they say the structure of the album as a whole came together naturally. “To me, it’s got a cinematic quality to it,” Gahan says. “It takes you on a bit of a trip, starting in a place where we’re like, ‘This is my world,’ and ending with, ‘How do I make the most of it?'” The music, Gahan says, sounds melancholy but it’s also braided with hope and joy. The record will likely feature 12 songs with a few saved over as extras for a deluxe edition.
When asked in Berlin if the band will be paying tribute to Fletch on the tour, Gahan said the group was still figuring it out but had zeroed in on some of Fletch’s favorite Depeche Mode songs. “He’ll be there in spirit, I’m sure, judging us,” he said with a laugh.
In another light moment, a journalist asked if the band would ever consider doing an “unplugged” tour. “We can’t really unplug because we’re an electronic band,” Gahan said, chuckling. Gore added, “We can try it with battery packs or something.”
In an unusual move for Depeche Mode, the group will start its Memento Mori tour in North America instead of Europe. “I can’t remember the last time we started in America, if we ever have,” Gore says. “I’m sure we did at some point, but it just seemed like something different to do.” (The European leg will begin May 16. Some of the venues the group next year will play include Madison Square Garden, Chicago’s United Center, Twickenham Stadium and the Stade de France.) The band will return to North America in Sept. 2023 for another round of 29 arena shows.
Until then, they will press forward while continuing to grieve their friend and bandmate’s death. “It was very odd coming to Berlin and coming into a hotel where we have been with Andy many times, and just seeing the bar where we’d often seen sitting,” Gore says. “That was a bit of a reality check. Everything that we’re doing from this point forward is different, so we just have to put our heads down and do the best we can.”

Depeche Mode Perform âGhosts Againâ and âPersonal Jesusâ on Colbert: Watch
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
The post Depeche Mode Perform “Ghosts Again” and “Personal Jesus” on Colbert : Watch appeared first on Consequence .
Depeche Mode were the musical guests on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night. The new wave icons performed their latest single “Ghosts Again,” a cut from their upcoming album, Memento Mori .
“Ghosts Again” carries an especially heavy weight considering it’s been only a year and a half since the passing of Depeche Mode’s founding keyboardist Andy Fletcher in June 2022. Although the band will never be the same without him, their appearance on Colbert serves as a fitting tribute that proves remaining members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore have no intention of stopping anytime soon.
Additionally, Depeche Mode also performed their classic song “Personal Jesus” for the Colbert audience, which they’ve now shared as a web exclusive. Watch them perform both songs below.
Memento Mori is out March 24th. It marks Depeche Mode’s 15th album overall, and it’s also one of Consequence ‘s most anticipated releases of 2023 . In support of the new record, Gahan and Gore will embark on a lengthy world tour , their first proper trek together in about five years; you can grab tickets to see them here . Also be sure to revisit our recent interview with Gahan about the new album and continuing on without Fletcher.
