Detroit's rich and varied history is best explored on a guided tour led by an enthusiastic local.

If you only think of the auto industry when you think of Detroit , then it's time you acquaint yourself with this fascinating and complex city. Its many attractions include museums, parks, impressive buildings, public art and numerous watering holes. Rather than exploring on your own, begin your trip with the help of an informative local. U.S. News determined the following tours as some of the best available based on traveler opinion and expert input. No matter how you choose to tour – whether by antique vehicle, a bus or your own two feet – you're sure to leave with a new appreciation for Motor City.

City Tour Detroit – See the D: Downtown Detroit Walking Tour

In addition to its distinctive skyscrapers, downtown Detroit features notable public art, including the Spirit of Detroit statue and the Monument to Joe Louis. These are just two of the spots visited on this 2 1/2-hour walking tour, which also encompasses The Belt (an art-adorned alleyway), the riverfront, the Greektown entertainment district and, of course, the city's famous skyscrapers. Walkers enjoy the informative, enthusiastic guides' commentary. Tickets costs about $30 for adults and $15 for anyone 17 or younger. From late April through September, tours depart every day at 10 a.m. with an additional 6 p.m. start on Wednesday and Sunday. From October through December, tours are offered less frequently, and only private tours are available the rest of the year. City Tour Detroit also runs a tour about the city's involvement in the Underground Railroad.

Show Me Detroit Tours – Daily Sightseeing Tours

You can glimpse many of Detroit's most popular attractions during this two-hour van ride, which moves through the downtown area and beyond. Among the sights visted are the district where the city's ballpark and arenas are located, Midtown, Eastern Market and Belle Isle. Visitors regularly praise drivers for their insights about the city's architecture, history and culture. Tickets start at $65 for adults and discounts are available for students, seniors and children. The price includes round-trip transportation from select hotels . Excursions are offered daily at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Show Me Detroit also runs private outings.

Explore Motor City in a classic vehicle during a trip with the Antique Touring Company.

Antique Touring Company – The Motor Cities Heritage Tour: From Tinkerers to Titans in the Auto Age

Explore Detroit's automotive heritage while riding in an antique Model A Ford. This tour focuses on car manufacturing in the early 20th century by visiting sites of factories, company offices and homes of leaders who oversaw the transportation revolution. You'll also visit the factory where Ford built its famous automatic assembly line. Car enthusiasts find this a fun way to learn about Detroit's legendary car history. The 2 1/2-hour tours are offered from mid-April to early November. Tours typically run Wednesday through Sunday multiple times daily. Prices vary depending on how many tickets you book. Antique Touring Company also offers tours of Belle Isle in its antique Fords.

The Detroit Bus Company – Drunks of Antiquity: The Historic Bar Tour

Visit four of Detroit's oldest bars along this four-hour ride in repurposed school buses. As you drink your way around, you'll visit a bar that's been open since 1874 and learn of the city's drinking history and culture from expert guides. You're also welcome to bring your own beverages for the bus ride. Participants regularly praise the bars visited and are complimentary of guides and drivers. Tours take place on most Fridays and Saturdays around 7 p.m., though area pickups begin a bit earlier. Tickets cost around $45 with discounts for seniors and groups. All revelers must be at least 21 years old. The company also runs a prohibition-themed tour, as well as a sightseeing tour of the city.

Detroit Segway – The Whole Shebang

Ideal for travelers short on time, this three-hour Segway tour covers approximately 5 miles of downtown Detroit. It departs from the Eastern Market, Detroit's main farmers market, and then proceeds along the Dequindre Cut Greenway. You'll then zip alongside the river, see the Campus Martius and Grand Circus Park before heading through the redeveloped Brush Park neighborhood on the way back to the starting point. Riders enjoy the tour, calling it a fun way to see the city. Tickets cost around $90, which includes the use of the Segway. Tours are available from May through mid-November on Wednesday at noon, Saturday at 10 a.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Rider restrictions may apply. Detroit Segway offers a number of other tours around the city, including one that glides around Belle Isle

Riverside Kayak Connection – Belle Isle Blue Heron Lagoon Tour

Paddle your way through Blue Heron Lagoon to observe its beautiful wildlife on this kayak excursion. In addition to the natural scenery, you'll also get a glimpse of some of Belle Isle's historic structures, including the Detroit Yacht Club and the William Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse. Kayakers find the guides knowledgeable about the area's history and say the excursion is well organized. Tours last approximately two hours; there is an additional 30 minutes of preliminary preparation and instruction. It costs about $45 to tour; the price excludes the entrance fee to the park. Outings are available starting at 9:30 a.m. on select Saturdays and Sundays during the summer. Participants must be at least 14 to tour, but no previous kayaking experience is required. This company also offers several other kayaking trips near and around Belle Isle.

Detroit History Tours – Wild Women of Detroit Bus Tour

This 4 1/2-hour bus ride spotlights the integral role women played in Detroit's history, from the wife of its French founder to the female stars of Motown. It also stops for drinks at two area bars. Because of the adult nature of some of the stories, as well as the bar stops, participants must be at least 21 years old. Reviewers rave about the tour, saying they learn a lot from the guides, who are expert storytellers. Buses depart from the historic Eastern Market on select Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost roughly $50 and do not include drinks at the bars. The company also runs a Detroit food tour as well as a Detroit mobsters bus tour.

Good to Know

The Guardian Building is considered by many to be Detroit’s most beautiful building. It appears on many Detroit things-to-do and must-see lists.

Prepare to be wowed when you enter this iconic landmark considered by many to be Detroit’s most beautiful building. You’ll marvel at the different types of marble, colorful tiles, intricate mosaics, soaring painted ceiling, grand mural, and other elaborate characteristics that define this Art Deco masterpiece.

The Guardian Building, located in the heart of the city’s financial district, is a late 1920s skyscraper steeped in history and architectural detail. It’s one of Detroit’s most-visited buildings.

At City Tour Detroit, we’re honored to be given the privilege of showing off this magnificent edifice to visitors and sharing the Guardian’s story from its inception to its significance today. Our 45-minute tours held on select weekends* provide visitors with a great overview of the building’s design and history in addition to special access to a few floors not usually open to the public.

Although the Guardian Building tours are free, advance registration is required. Click on the “Book Now” button to find available tour dates and make your reservation.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious about Detroit’s architectural wonders, this Guardian Building tour promises to be an enriching experience for all.

*Special events booked by building management take precedence over tours. Since we do not own or manage the building, occasionally we may have to cancel scheduled tours when given notice from management. Also, we reserve the right to cancel tours due to other considerations such as power outages and severe weather conditions.

Please enter the building and walk up the steps to the Promenade Level. Look for the City Tour Detroit office/store (Suite 250). Check in there.

Tour length is approximately 45 minutes.

Although we’d love to show the entire building, the tour usually covers the lobby, promenade, exterior, 6th floor, 32nd floor, and lower former vault area.

Occasionally areas of the building are rented out for private events – especially in the Summer & Fall, so we aren’t able to offer tours on those days.

In most cases, we’ll ask you to wait for the next tour.

If you can find nearby street parking, you’ll need to download the ParkDetroit app. The Buhl Garage, located across the street, usually offers weekend parking for $10. That price is subject to change when there are special events. Online parking aids such as www.parkwhiz.com can help you find parking.

The lobby, exterior, 6th, and 32nd floor are handicapped accessible. Unfortunately as of now, the promenade or banking hall and basement former vault area are each accessed by approximately 25 steps.

We can offer private group tours of the building on Saturdays and Sundays. Weekday tours are restricted to the lobby, promenade, and exterior. There is a small fee for private tours.

City of Flint offering tours of water facility on 10-year anniversary of water crisis

By DeJanay Booth-Singleton

Updated on: April 25, 2024 / 4:38 PM EDT / CBS Detroit

FLINT, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - The city of Flint is offering tours of the upgraded water facility 10 years after the water crisis.

Officials say the tours are to allow residents to see the upgrades that have been implemented over the last five years. The Flint Water Plant staff will lead the tours from 2-4 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. They are expected to last about 15 minutes and are limited to 20 people.

"We want Flint residents to understand how far Flint's water infrastructure has come since the early days of the water crisis, as well as the work that still lays ahead," said Mayor Sheldon Neeley in a statement.

"Many elements of our water system are state-of-the-art, and while other elements still need improvement, we are working every day to continue to upgrade our water infrastructure. As we reflect on the 10-year anniversary of the water crisis, I know that we are Flint Strong—and we are strong because of these major investments in our water system, and our commitment to our friends and neighbors that we will not give up this fight."

Residents will be able to tour the chemical feed building, where the water is injected with chemicals to meet the needs of the city's water distribution system.

Officials say the city purchases treated Lake Huron water from the Great Lake Water Authority. The Genesee County Drain Commission is used as a backup source.

Nephew of French priest who served across Michigan during the Civil War embarks on memorial tour

The great-nephew of Belgian priest Charles Lemagie is embarking on a world tour, following in his ancestor's footprints during his time as a Confederate missionary between 1854 and 1882.

The French priest Father Charles Lamagie was sent to replace a priest in the Great Lakes Region serving with the Confederate forces under the Union flag, according to the Mater Dolorosa Catholic Chuch in New Orleans, Louisiana.

"Father Lemagie carried out the directions of Archbishop Odin for the recitation of prayers for peace, and conducted Forty Hours' Devotion, also for the same intention. Prayers were also said in 1863, for the success of the Confederate forces, as requested by President Jefferson Davis," according to Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church.

Bruno Lemagie, a surviving family member of Father Charles Lemagie, will begin his journey in France on Tuesday, traveling for two months to Belgium, Canada, and several locations in the Great Lakes region to Louisiana.

Lemagie's journey will be the fuel for his second book inspired by his family's history, following "Oublié de Dieu" published in 2018 .

In a news release on Friday, Lemagie said he will travel strictly by public transportation and seek housing with locals and in parishes, a "real adventure."

Once crossing the Atlantic, Lemagie makes stops across Michigan in Detroit, Dearborn, Ypsilanti, Marquette, and L'Anse before hitting Wisconsin cities Green Bay, Appleton, Holand Town, Maple Grove, New London, Manawa, and Waupaca.

During his time in Michigan Lemagie will visit the Dearborn Historical Museum, where Father Charles Lemagie officiated in 1859 for 13 months until January 1860.

"At the beginning of autumn, an unexpected event will call him to Dearborn. As he is the only pastor on this part of the coast and stationed not far from there," reads Oublié de Dieu. "Father Charles is in charge of the funeral service and succeeds him as director of the small community of Saint-John."

DETROIT – The NFL draft tour has not had a stop quite like the one in Detroit .

“We watched 32 amazing players join the NFL family in front of a record 275,000 people ,” Commissioner Roger Goodell told fans who flooded downtown Detroit on Friday for a second straight day. "Guess what? Another 230,000 are already here tonight.

“So Detroit, you’re within 100,000 of breaking the all-time record.”

Nashville drew 600,000 fans over the three days of the NFL draft in 2019 to set the mark the Motor City will shoot to surpass on Saturday. Nashville had the previous first- and second-round records, drawing 200,000 fans each day.

Michigan coach Sherrone Moore, assistant coaches and players he has returning from last season's national championship-winning team were introduced on stage by Goodell, and the crowd sang the school's fight song before the second round kicked off.

“It's super special to be here,” Wolverines tight end Colston Loveland said. “Detroit showed out, for sure.

"There's lot of bodies here.”

Streets, restaurants, bars and hotels were filled for a second straight day as fans of the 32 teams gathered for a party that showed no signs of slowing down.

Larry Kordosky traveled from Arizona to attend his second NFL draft and left no doubt who his favorite team is, wearing red and blue pants with Bills logos and a Buffalo jersey under black shoulder pads.

“You couldn’t ask for a better crowd or host," Kordosky said, standing in a rare open space in the middle of Campus Martius Park. "I had never been to Detroit. I love it. It’s an amazing city.

“I went to the draft in Las Vegas two years ago, but it was nothing like this. There are fans everywhere, especially Lions fans.”

Lions season-ticket holder Reiner Calderero of Warren, Michigan, and Christopher Guiao of Sterling Heights were in the first row up against a barricade just beyond the covered theater area where the picks were announced.

They were easy to pick out in the crowd.

The men wore the same Honolulu blue and silver masks they put on for home games at nearby Ford Field.

Guiao said the NFL draft experience exceeded his high expectations.

“All day, both days, the whole area has been packed,” he said. “Hopefully, the world sees what we see. Detroit is a beautiful city with warm people.”

In addition to the intangible benefits of showing the city in a good light for visitors and 50-plus million people watching on TVs, phones and tablets, the economic impact was expected to exceed $160 million and that’s when local organizers were expecting 400,000 fans to attend the three-day event.

More than 20 teams have inquired about hosting a future NFL draft and Green Bay will be on the clock after the seventh round concludes Saturday.

The Motor City, which was once one of the nation’s largest and most powerful cities, has bounced back from filing for bankruptcy in 2013 and has made the most of an opportunity to shine.

“A special thank you to everybody here who came from across Michigan and across the United States to help Detroit set new attendance records for the NFL draft,” Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan , joined by Hall of Famer Barry Sanders, said on stage before announcing the Lions had drafted Missouri cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the second round.

The NFL draft is giving Detroit a chance to show the world how far it has come, according to Dan Gilbert, whose real-estate company, Bedrock, was among the private and public entities to land the league's annual event.

“The city, it’s got an energy to it,” Gilbert said in an interview with The Associated Press. “I think that’s one of the reasons we’re able to convince the NFL to do the draft out here. They could feel the energy as we took them on tours here.”

'Taylor Swift' bills would crack down on bot ticket purchases, inflated resale prices

detroit michigan tours

Lansing — Michigan lawmakers on Wednesday introduced bills to crack down on the use of automated software programs snarling concert ticket sales and driving up prices for big name performers.

The legislation is similar to the so-called “Taylor Swift” laws recently passed in Arizona after tickets were gobbled up for Swift's Eras concert tour by automated bots that later resold the tickets for higher prices.

While there are laws at the federal level preventing the practice, they are rarely enforced, said GOP state Rep. Graham Filler, who sponsored the legislation with Rep. Mike McFall, D-Hazel Park.

“I’m trying to make Michigan a really unattractive state for these bots to do business,” Filler said. “It’s unfair to people, it’s anti-competitive, anti-capitalist, it’s anti-consumer.”

It's not clear that Michigan concerts have been plagued by the same problems seen in Arizona, but Filler and McFall said they want to take a proactive approach to prevent against a similar event.

The Event Online Ticket Sales Act would prohibit an automated software application from creating multiple IP addresses, email addresses or accounts to buy up tickets for an event that exceed the posted ticket limit. The entertainment events protected by the act include theater performances, concerts, exhibitions or sporting events that are open to the public.

The legislation also would prevent individuals from using software to disable a ticket seller's security measure or circumvent a waiting period, electronic queue or other sales volume limitation programs.

Violations of the act would be investigated by the attorney general and would be punishable by a civil fine of up to $5,000 per ticket. The attorney general also could seek to recover restitution.

“Michiganders are tired of these scalping bots who purchase and hoard tickets for resale, often pricing them out of reach for many hardworking families,” McFall said in a statement Wednesday.

The introduction of the legislation comes more than three years after the Michigan Legislature voted to repeal a 1931 ban on ticket scalping.

The 2020 law — passed after roughly six years of debate — repealed a state ban that was rarely enforced and left the door open to bad actor ticket scalpers who never had a ticket in the first place.

The repeal allowed individuals and businesses to scalp tickets so long as the businesses’ names and websites did not resemble the venue or event for which the tickets are sold. Ticket sellers, under the 2020 law, must have the ticket in their possession at the time of sale or inform the purchaser if he or she does not have the ticket 48 hours ahead of the event.

The legislation at that time prohibited the practice of using “ticketing bot” software, making it subject to a 93-day misdemeanor and/or $1,000 fine.

The legislation introduced Wednesday differs because it allows the attorney general to bring a civil action, not a criminal one, with a higher fine of $5,000 per ticket.
