Why do we tend to look back at our mistakes? How can we stop looking back and start looking forward to what’s ahead?

Claim God’s Promise

What a refreshing verse Isaiah the Prophet writes in Isaiah 1:18: “Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.” What a vivid picture of the cleansing made possible, only “with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot” (1st Pet 1:19). Once we’ve been cleansed, we “press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil 3:14), which means there’s no time for us to be looking back at our past failures and sins. Since these verses about forgiveness are true, why do so many trip over what’s behind them? And why do some people trip over what’s behind other people’s past? For the believer in Christ, all of those things are behind them. We are new creations in Christ (2nd Cor 5:17), because it was “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2nd Cor 5:21). If we are looking at what’s behind us, we might trip over what’s ahead of us.

Jesus told the Apostle Peter that we must not forgive our brothers and sister “up to seven times,” but up to “seventy times seventy,” and that doesn’t mean when we reach 490 times, we don’t forgive anymore (Matt 18:21-22). Jesus was saying in effect, we must continually forgive others because God has to continually forgive us. If we don’t get that, we’ll have a hard time forgiving others and forgiving ourselves. Now if someone sins against us, what do we do? Jesus said, “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother” (Mat 18:15), but what if that’ doesn’t work? “But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses” (Matt 18:16). That doesn’t mean you gang up on them and having them outnumbered they must give up. It means that maybe the witnesses will see it is not really a sin at all or they will reinforce what the offended party says, and that is, “You have sinned against your brother.” But what if that doesn’t work? Jesus says, “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector” (Matt 18:17). If you have tried and failed, then leave it up to God. If you have been the one causing the offense, then you (or I) have to go to them and settle that account and ask for forgiveness. Don’t let a state of un-forgiveness trip up your Christian walk.

Worry about Tomorrow

Jesus said that it’s a total waste of time to worry about tomorrow. There is nothing we can do to change it and there is nothing we can do to stop it. This means when we worry about tomorrow, we’re actually tripping over tomorrow, and maybe tripping over something that doesn’t even happen. Can you think of anything that wastes more time and energy than worrying does? Our Lord said, “do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matt 6:34). In other words, we’ve got our hands full with today without adding more to our plate about tomorrow. And try to answer this question of Jesus: “And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life” (Matt 6:27)? I’m afraid I can’t raise my hand. I can only subtract from my life span by worrying, not add to it; not even a second. Don’t we trust our heavenly Father? Since He cares for the birds of the air, even a tiny sparrow, doesn’t He care for us? Yes, and infinitely more.

Living for Eternity

One wise pastor said that we should be living with the end in mind. What he means is that we ought to contemplate the future and our eternity. Imagine the day that we will actually see God, face to face, and not be toast (Rev 21:3. 22:4). This has become a memory verse for many a saint who’s suffered: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away” (Rev 21:4). What a future we have. It’s like nothing we can even describe. I can describe last week to you, our recent nursing home visit, the flat tire I had, the funeral I was at, or our new visitors at church, but I cannot even fathom the incredible eternity that’s coming. That’s what the Apostle Paul wanted the Christians at Rome to dwell on in their suffering. He said, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us” (Rom 8:18).

What I hope I have done is to help you look ahead and not behind you. If you can be pressing forward toward the high prize of your great calling, then you won’t have the time or interest in looking back, you won’t waste time and energy worrying about tomorrow, and if your concentrating on what’s ahead of you, you’ll probably not trip over what’s behind you or in front of you.

H ere are ten encouraging Bible verses about letting go.

Ephesians 4:31-32 “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

When the Apostle Paul wrote that we are to let go of all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and slander, he says we must make the first move. We must be intentional in letting all of these sinful behaviors go and take the initiative to be kind to others, showing tender hearts, and remembering to forgive others, especially considering how much more we’ve been forgiven. The scale of what we have been forgiven and our forgiving others is infinitely more on the scale of how much God has forgiven us in Christ.

10 Encouraging Bible Verses About Letting Go

Philippians 3:13-14 “Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

One way to let go is to be looking forward. You can’t be looking forward and backward at the same time, and “forgetting what lies behind” us doesn’t mean we can erase it from our memories. We can’t do that but that’s okay. That’s how we learn; mistakes are great teachers, but Paul is telling us to forget about it and move on. Stop dwelling on the past. Don’t trip over what’s behind you. Strain forward, not backward. Press ahead…the goals in front of you, not behind you. That prize seems closer today than it did last year doesn’t it? So keep pressing forward and let go of yesterday.

Isaiah 43:18-19 “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

To forget about “the former things” means that we don’t dwell on it. Don’t “consider the things of old” because God’s going to do “a new thing.” Whatever today or tomorrow holds for us will be new to us, so trust God. He will make a way, even if you’re in the wilderness right now. God can find “rivers in the desert.”

First Corinthians 9:24 “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.”

Many years ago when I was on the track team in high school, I learned a valuable lesson. I was leading the race, but when I looked back, I saw another runner gaining on me. I nearly stumbled by looking back and it took my momentum away…and yes, I lost the race. Just as the Apostle Paul says we’re like runners in a race and only one receives a prize at the event, we must run as if we deeply desire to “obtain it,” but we can’t be looking back…we must learn to let go of what’s behind us.

Romans 8:28 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

When I read this Bible verse I sometimes think of Joseph who was unfairly treated by his own brothers and then sold into slavery. From there, he ended up in prison, and again from something he was innocent of. It didn’t matter because the Scriptures say “The LORD was with Joseph” (Gen 39:2), when he was in charge of Potiphar’s house and while he was in prison (Gen 39:23). Think about that! God can use evil for His own good purposes (Gen 50:20).

First Peter 5:7 “Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

Why do we often carry around our own burdens when we can come to Him with all of the heavy stuff? Jesus tells us, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matt 11:28-29), because His “yoke is easy” and His “burden is light.” Why shouldn’t we? He cared for us enough to die on the cross!

Philippians 4:6 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

The Book of Philippians has been called the “Joy Epistle” or book because of its emphasis on joy. The Apostle didn’t as much command them to be joyful but tells them how they can have it. If there’s anything at all we’re anxious about, and we must all admit to that at times, we must submit it to God in prayer. We pray about everything but we also make our requests with thanksgiving. When we’re thankful, we are automatically more joyful.

Proverbs 28:13 “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”

There were times when my son would actually come up to me and confess that he did something wrong. He learned that it’s far better to do that, than to be found out anyway. This proverb proved true for him and it does for everyone. We’re not only to confess our sins (1st John 1:9), we must forsake them. If we don’t forsake them, then have we really come before God with a clear conscience? Confessing and forsaking sins brings mercy.

Hebrews 12:1-2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

The context of these verses in the Book of Hebrews is that they should think about their present suffering and then, “Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted” (Heb 12:3). The “Him” –the author of Hebrews is clearly Jesus Christ and Jesus looked beyond the suffering because of the joy that would come. That must be our perspective too or we’ll never let go of the past.

Ephesians 4:26-27 “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.”

Doesn’t this sound like a command? Does Paul actually command us to “be angry?” It appears so, but he qualifies it by saying, “do not sin.” Additionally, Paul suggests we put it to bed. That is, we must get over it and reconcile with the other person we’re angry with (hopefully, for a right reason). When we see someone hurting another, we have a right to be angry and speak up for the innocent victim (which is what Pro-Lifers do). This is called righteous indignation but it’s not right to take matters into our own hands. We must leave that to God to make all things right someday (Rom 12:17-19). God’s judgment seat is a one-seater. We don’t belong there, but we can speak up and be angry about certain social sins such as political corruption, voter fraud, taxpayer-funded abortions, and losing our freedoms promised in the Constitution.

I want to encourage you that you can let go of things; even if it’s got you in its grip. The key is to let go and let God have it. We can do nothing without Christ (John 15:5), and yet everything with Him (Phil 4:13). Trust Him to give you the ability to let go of things, whatever they are: financial difficulties, relationship issues, problems with your children, addictions, you name it. He can handle the load when we cannot, so let go, but that starts with opening your hands, so that you can let it go.

Don’t Trip on What’s Behind You: Using Faith & God to Overcome Our Past

We can learn from the past, but we don’t want to let it weigh us down and prevent us from seeing the joy of the Lord in the present. 

So, how can prayer and the Bible help us overcome our past and open our hearts to God? We look at this question below.

What is Regret and How Does it Hinder Our Lives?

It’s not a pleasant feeling. God does not want you dwelling in regret or in past mistakes. The past can weigh us down, trap us in a repeating loop of ‘what ifs,’ and can lead to fear being the dominating emotion of our lives. When a person gives their heart to Jesus and repents their sins, those sins are washed away so that the person can move on. 

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here.” – Corinthians 5:17

Christ wants us to be free and experience the joy of the Lord. True freedom in Christ, however, can be hindered when we dwell on our mistakes. 

The Story of Paul’s Repentance 

The Bible has a lot to say about repentance. The Apostle Paul, for example, carried a heavy burden of guilt for his past transgressions against Christians. Before his conversion, Paul persecuted Christians and went against the message that Jesus was the Messiah. Later in his life, however, he became a dedicated follower of Jesus. Paul’s conversion did not happen until years after Jesus’ crucifixion. 

Paul confesses his burden in a letter to the Corinthians , “For I am the least of the Apostles and do not even deserve to be called an Apostle because I persecuted the Church of God.” Corinthians 15:9

Paul saw his past actions clearly, but through his repentance and action toward the good, he embraced God and moved forward onto a better path. Through his confession, Paul left his sins behind and worked to be better. People will often regret a period of time in their life, a decision, or an event. These past moments can haunt a person and prevent them from moving forward in life. 

The past does not define you and God doesn’t want you imprisoned by the guilt of your past mistakes. If you are carrying something from your past, work with God to absolve yourself of the guilt, work hard to grow with God, pray, and be free with Christ. 

Bible Verses to Help Overcome the Past

If you struggle with letting go of things past, remember that God is ready to help you leave it behind. He does not want you to dwell on past mistakes and keep you from flourishing and moving on with your life. 

A few Bible verses that demonstrated his sentiment include:

  • “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead.” – Philippians 3:13
  • “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing. Now it springs up; do you perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” – Isaiah 43: 18-19

How to Learn & Leave Regret Behind for a New Start

Shedding the burden of guilt is often easier said than done. Human beings have a tendency to blame themselves, dwell on the past, and slowly become consumed by the feeling of unworthiness. While learning from our past is important, dwelling on it is not what God is looking for. He wants his children to experience joy and grow closer to Him. So how do you begin this process? Here are a few things to remember: 

  • Silence the negative voice and remember the story of Christ. We all know that internal monologue that loves to dwell on our mistakes and constantly reminds us of our failures. That little voice inside our head can be pulling us down. Christ died on the cross for us and reminding ourselves of his sacrifice and the Lord’s love for us is the first step towards learning to let go. 
  • Forget what’s behind, and keep your eyes on the kingdom of God. We all trip and fall, but what’s important is getting up, learning from our past, and continuing the walk forward. There is an eternal prize ahead of us, and if we focus on living our lives with intention, purpose, and in contribution to God’s kingdom, we shed our pasts and move closer to God. It is the journey- in doing good for others, living in truth, and focusing on God’s love moving forward- that we progress into the future.

Can’t Find Eclipse Glasses? Here’s What to Do.

Reliable paper-framed glasses are by far the most popular option for safely watching the total solar eclipse on Monday. But they’ve gotten more difficult to find in some places ahead of the event.

If you’ve checked everywhere — your local planetarium, public library and even online — fear not: There is still a way to watch the eclipse safely, using items around the house. Here are a few options.

Use your hands

Palms up, position one hand over the other at a 90-degree angle. Open your fingers slightly in a waffle pattern, and allow sunlight to stream through the spaces onto the ground, or another surface. During the eclipse, you will see a projection of the moon obscuring the surface of the sun.

This method works with anything with holes, such as a straw hat, a strainer, a cheese grater or even a perforated spoon. You will also notice this effect when light from the partially eclipsed sun streams through leaves on a tree.

Set up a cardstock screen

For this option, you need a couple of white index cards or two sheets of cardstock paper. First, punch a small hole in the middle of one of the cards using a thumbtack or a pin.

Then, facing away from the sun, allow light to stream through this pinhole. Position the second card underneath to function as a screen. Adjust the spacing between the two cards to make the projection of the sun larger or smaller.

Make a box projector

If you’re up for a bit of crafting, you can make a more sophisticated pinhole projector . Start with a cardboard box — empty cereal boxes are often used, but you can use a larger box, too. You’ll also need scissors, white paper, tape, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack.

Cut the piece of paper to fit the inside bottom of the cardboard box to act as a screen. Use tape to hold it in place.

On the top of the box, cut two rectangular holes on either side. (The middle should be left intact — you can use tape to secure this if needed.)

Tape a piece of aluminum foil over one of the rectangular cutouts. Punch a tiny hole in the middle of the foil with the tack or pin. The other cutout will serve as a view hole.

With your back to the sun, position the foil side of the box over your shoulder, letting light stream through the pinhole. An image of the sun will project onto the screen at the bottom of the box, which you can see through the view hole. A bigger box will create a bigger image.

Enjoy the show through any of these makeshift pinholes. And remember, during totality, you can view the sun directly with your naked eye. But you should stop looking at the sun as soon as it reappears.

Experts warn not to look at solar eclipse with your phone camera — but share tricks for safely taking pictures

Millions of Americans will be able to see the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, and chances are many will want to grab their phone and take pictures to document the rare event. 

Experts warn that it's essential not only to protect your eyes from the sun, but also to be cautious when using your phone to view or take photos of the solar eclipse. 

A partial solar eclipse, when the moon blocks some of the sun, will occur from coast to coast, while a total solar eclipse —when the moon lines up with the sun, blocking all of its light — will be visible in  the "path of totality," stretching across more than a dozen states , from Texas to Maine.

"There is no safe time to look at the sun without protection, period," Dr. Christopher Starr, director of the fellowship program in cornea, cataract and laser vision correction surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine,  said in an interview with Health Matters, NewYork-Presbyterian's online journal. "Not a split second, not a half a second, not a quarter of a second. At no time should a kid, or an adult, be looking at the sun even as the sun is partially eclipsed. It's still unsafe."

The safest way to look at a partially eclipsed sun is with eclipse glasses that meet an international standard, ISO 12312-2, according to the American Optometric Association. 

Can I take pictures of the solar eclipse with my cellphone?

Cellphone cameras should not be pointed directly at the sun, as it may damage the phone's sensor, experts say.

Smartphones were never designed for taking photos of the sun or the moon, according to NASA. Because standard lenses are very small, they aren't equipped with the resolution needed for the largest objects in the sky like the sun and moon.

"Cellphone cameras do not have the kind of protective filters needed for safe or successful solar photography," Dr. Geoff Bradford, professor of ophthalmology at West Virginia University, told CBS News. 

Photographing the partial eclipse with a smartphone will likely not only damage the camera sensor but also result in an overexposed photo, Bradford said.

Douglas Goodwin, professor of media studies at Scripps College and an expert in computational photography, agreed. 

"Smartphone cameras in 2024 have small sensors and lenses, making it challenging to capture detailed images of the eclipse itself," Goodwin said in an interview. "Taking photos of an eclipse is even harder than taking photos of the moon — it's small and dazzling!"

Can I look at the sun on my cellphone screen?

Pointing your cellphone at the sun is bad for the phone, but it also could be dangerous for your eyes if you look at the sun on your cellphone screen, experts say. 

Except for the few moments of total eclipse , when the sun is completely obstructed, "viewing the sun with your unprotected eyes or through a cellphone screen is extremely dangerous," Bradford said, advising that all visual contact with the sun take place only through special solar eclipse glasses that meet international standards.

That international safety standard, which is set by the  International Organization for Standardization , means the glasses reduce visible sunlight to a safe level and block ultraviolet and infrared radiation, according to the  American Astronomical Society  website. 

Ultraviolet radiation can damage the eyes's cells, while heat from infrared radiation can cause thermal damage,  according to the National Eye Institute . 

What's the safest way of taking pictures of the eclipse?

The solar eclipse has various stages and effects, and some are safer to photograph than others. 

"Smartphones will be great for capturing the experience of the eclipse," Goodwin said. This includes the effects of the altered lighting around us. 

"Keep your head down and look under leafy trees for crescent-shaped projections of the eclipsed sun on the ground," Goodwin said. "Plus, you will observe how the strange light affects people and animals."

Spectators use viewing glasses to look at the eclipse on Aug. 21, 2017, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Goodwin also recommended that people in the eclipse's path look for shadow bands, which are mysterious gray ripples that snake over the ground just before and after the total eclipse.

If you really want to photograph the sun as it becomes partially covered, take an extra pair of solar eclipse glasses, cut them and tape one of the filters over your phone's camera lens, Bradford said. If your smartphone has several lenses, make sure all are covered. 

If you're using an iPhone, you should turn off the camera's macro mode when putting a filter in front of the camera. 

"Do not look at the sun, even briefly, while pointing your camera skyward," Bradford said. "To enlarge the eclipse further than your camera zoom will allow, you can purchase a clip-on zoom lens for your smartphone for more dramatic photos."

Can I take photos of the sun when it's fully obstructed?

If you're in the path of totality , during the few minutes of total eclipse, you can look up without eye protection and take unfiltered photographs with a smartphone, Bradford said. 

But it's important to be mindful that the total eclipse is a fleeting occurrence. As soon as the moon begins to move away from the sun and sunlight reappears, make sure your eclipse glasses and camera filter are back on, Bradford advised.

Some experts warn against looking up at the sun even when it's fully obstructed because of how suddenly sunlight can reappear. 

"Totality of the eclipse lasts only about 1 to 3 minutes based on geographic location, and bright sunlight suddenly can appear as the moon continues to move," an eclipse viewing guide published in  JAMA  noted, adding that "even a few seconds of viewing the sun during an eclipse" can temporarily or permanently damage your vision. 

Looking at a partial eclipse without the protection of filters can cause permanent and irreversible eye damage, including blind spots, distorted vision and decreased color vision, Bradford said.

During the darkened few moments of the total eclipse, Goodwin recommends using your smartphone's HDR (High Dynamic Range) and Night modes to enhance photographs. HDR mixes exposures to capture a range of brightness levels, while Night mode uses image stacking to create well-lit photos in low-light conditions, Goodwin said. 

You can use the iPhone's Wide and Ultra Wide cameras during near-total darkness.

Boosie Badazz is warning fans to stop cheering on rap beefs amidst the ever-increasing Drake vs. Everybody feud .

On Friday, Boosie hopped on X, formerly Twitter, to urge fans to consider that some hip-hop beefs end in arrests and court trials, not to mention loss of life. The Baton Rouge rapper's comments come following the release of Future and Metro Boomin's latest joint album, We Still Don't Trust You , which included more Drake disses delivered by guest rappers.

"Everybody gassing up rap beef SMH," Boosie wrote. "All excited, saying this hip-hop! Well, everyone in the crew not gon' see it that way and when it pop 'it really goes down.' So when someone from one of these crews die, don't say they stupid SMH. Go support them in court like y'all supported the rap beef. I've seen people die. Y'all happy about who gon' win or lose but a mama gon' lose her son n ain't none of y'all going to the funeral smh."

Boosie continued by mentioning the war of words currently going on between Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Future, and more.

The homies ain't going for that disrespect. They feel their job is to protect big dog and their respect. How many rap beefs have led to murders? It's a new day 'hip-hop fans.'"

Tens of millions of Americans will have spent the day staring at a total solar eclipse, and at least a few of them may become worried that they inadvertently damaged their eyes.

But experts say there's no need to panic — the vast majority of eclipse viewers are probably fine. And even if somebody did strain their eyes, the effects could be temporary.

During the 2017 total solar eclipse it's estimated that 150 million Americans viewed the event. There were around 100 documented cases of eye damage across all of America and Canada, according to Ralph Chou, an expert on eclipse eye safety with the University of Waterloo in Canada.

Far more people turned up in emergency rooms worried that they'd damaged their eyes. Many complained of watery eyes or blurred vision, but in most cases they were fine, according to Avnish Deobhakta, an ophthalmologist at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, one of the largest eye hospitals in the nation.

The reason it's hard to do real damage is simple — the human eye has evolved to avoid staring directly at the sun.

"It's so bright that we're not actually capable of looking at it without either tearing or sort of not really feeling comfortable staring at this ball of light," Deobhakta says.

In the rare case that someone does damage their eyes, that damage usually shows up as a blurry spot in the field of vision , hours or up to a day after watching the eclipse. In about half of cases, the problem fixes itself, but permanent damage can sometimes occur.

Anticipating the post-eclipse ocular anxiety, at least one eye clinic in Buffalo, N.Y., is offering free eye checks immediately after the eclipse on April 8.

It's always a good idea to get your eyes checked, whether or not there's an eclipse. So if you're worried at all, go ahead and use the opportunity to schedule your annual exam.
