Ron Klausner and his wife stay home in the summer, where their family joins them by the beach. In the wintertime, they often head to warmer climes. After a trip to Sri Lanka, India sparked their excitement.

“We are hitting the major tourist sites in Northern India: Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur. We may also add in Varanasi. After those major sites we are taking a seven-day Brahmaputra river cruise in northeast India. We’re so excited to experience the unique culture—the people, colors, sounds and food. Tom Redburn, his wife Lisa, and their friends are retired journalists and nature photographers. Prolific travelers, Tom had wonderful memories of hiking in Norway in college and has always wanted to return.

“The trip is to fulfill a long-standing dream for both of us, a return to a place Lisa loved visiting with a close friend (who tragically died a couple of decades ago from breast cancer), and for me, to add to our great outdoors adventures by witnessing the stunning natural landscape of Norway. We’re looking forward to a different way of traveling this time. We’ve never taken a cruise (apart from a small 16-passenger adventure cruise to the Galapagos) and we’re not likely to ever take a conventional cruise. But as we’re getting older (we’re both 73), we found the idea of expedition cruising through a gorgeous remote landscape very appealing and are expecting the adventure-seeking atmosphere on the NatGeo expedition ship.

I’m probably most excited about two aspects of the trip: the spectacular scenery of the fjords and enjoying them both from the deck of our ship and exploring by small boat, kayak, and short hikes; and the chance to see polar bears in their natural environment. I also think it will be very exciting to be traveling to the land of the midnight sun during the very long daylight hours of June.” —Tom Redburn

This family of four—mom, dad, and two boys ages 16 and 18—are celebrating their eldest’s high-school graduation with a trip they’ve long dreamed of.

“South Africa and safari has been on our bucket list for decades. But we just never made it happen—other trips, finances, time, distance from L.A., etc. All sorts of excuses. But with our older son’s high-school graduation this June we realized that if we were going to do it as a family, we needed to finally pull the trigger. And we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate him than to take this dream trip. It will be the first time to Africa for all of us.

Namibia is what we are most excited about. It has been on our list—its isolation, alien beauty, remoteness, uniqueness. Vietnam and Cambodia: Off-the-beaten-path experiences and time with locals

Molly O’Neill-Emmi and her husband, Tom, love to travel. Before the pandemic, they had pushed off many of the bigger trips for later. The pandemic changed their philosophy: “No more thinking ‘one day’ we’ll get there—now‘s the time,” Molly said.

“We didn’t want to limit ourselves to just one region in Vietnam, so Sandy provided expert guidance and recommendations for a comprehensive and diverse itinerary. We’ll start in Hanoi, travel to Hue and Hoi An in central Vietnam, and then spend time in the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam. Karen Dalfen planned this trip with the intention of sharing fun and lifelong memories with her grandkids, ages 13 and 16. They love being active and have limited patience for museums and historical sites.

“I usually plan a vacation many months ahead as I want particular rooms, restaurants, entrance tickets and plane seating. This becomes particularly important when traveling alone with grandchildren. It’s important that plane seats are close by, that rooms are either next to each other or a family suite, that meal times are spaced properly. Given that Paris is an extremely busy city, planning way in advance is a must.

We will spend half our time in Paris, and the other in the region of Aix-en-Provence. There will be cooking lessons, site seeing, craft visiting, some hiking and biking, a food tasting day, and my favorite, a night at Versailles. I have discovered that it is not important to see everything on a vacation. In fact, this can be exhausting. The deeper and richer the experience is, will in turn help to create the long-lasting memories.” —Karen Dalfen

For Kim Segal and her family, Belize—where they can fly direct from their hometown—seemed a great international travel option with young children, ages 4 and 7, without the challenge of jet lag. They planned highlights for the whole family, including a night walk to look for nocturnal creatures and creepy-crawly bugs and spiders.

“I can’t wait to introduce my older son to great snorkeling. He was so excited to see fish in the ocean when we were in Croatia last year, but those fish were pretty boring compared to what we will see in Belize! I hope that my kids enjoy all the activities, and I really hope they like Shark Ray Alley. Watching them experience all these cool places and things—it’s as fun as experiencing them myself. I’m excited to watch them play on the beach; they spent hours doing that in Croatia and they just had a blast. Also, they got super into shell collecting in Croatia and in Cabo San Lucas, so hopefully they can do some beachcombing as well in Belize. Mainly, though, I’m just excited because travel allows me to focus solely on enjoying time with my family, something that is harder to do at home when I have a household to run and we all have busy and hectic lives. I set my email on out-of-office, let the organization I volunteer with know I’m unavailable, and I focus on having fun times together as a family.

Personally, I’m also hoping to see a manatee (haven’t seen one of those yet in the wild!), and I’m looking forward to cruising around on a catamaran checking out the views, maybe lounging on the trampoline of the boat with a good book and a glass of wine in hand, and of course I’m looking forward to a week of sunshine in the middle of winter!” —Kim Segal

25 Unforgettable Dream Travel Destinations That You Need To Add To Your Bucket list

Bocas del Toro is a must-see if you are traveling in 2024 in Panama. Certainly, it has charm with its sprawling beaches that are never too crowded and its turquoise waters.

In fact, its beaches are home to 95% of the coral species found in the Caribbean Sea. The vibrant hotels and eateries that surround Bocas Town’s streets and coastlines are its most unique characteristic.

Memorable wildlife encounters include night time snorkeling in the bioluminescent waters. But it also includes exploring the underground lakes of Nivida Bat Cave . This is done with the help of headlamps and an experienced guide from Hello Travel Panama.

The mountainous region of Chiriquí is equally enchanting. Indeed, between its beaches and highlands, the active Volcán Barú dominates.

First, check into the new 10-room boutique hotel, Finca El Oasis . Then, leave at midnight for a hike to the summit at dawn for a panoramic sunrise above the clouds.

2. Mexico 

European tourists often have an exaggerated image of a country where insecurity reigns. Rest assured, Mexico is not more dangerous than any other country.

If you’re here to enjoy the natural wonders, restaurants, archaeological sites, and natural sites, no one will want to harm you. Mexicans are very welcoming.

Mexico, and in particular the Yucatan region, is sunny all year round, so whatever the season, you can travel to Mexico without worry. If there is a rainy season from July to October, it is not at all restrictive to visit the Yucatan.

The days remain warm and sunny, which explains why many families go to Mexico during the school vacations.

Where should you go in Mexico? The country offers an incredible diversity of landscapes and experiences.

From the beaches of Yucatan to the volcanoes of the center, there are so many things to do in Oaxaca , including exploring its archaeological sites. An overview of the different regions to see in Mexico.

If you dream of a trip to Mexico that combines culture and nature, the Yucatan is the ideal region to set down your bags!

Explore the different archaeological sites. Considered the 7th wonder of the modern world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chichén Itzá is surely the most emblematic.

Another must-see is Uxmal, known for the excellent conservation of its architectural details. Calakmul, which is more confidential, is located in the middle of the jungle.

The cities of Yucatan have a nonchalant atmosphere. Take time to lose yourself in the colorful streets of Valladolid, in the white city of Merida, or in the charming colonial buildings of Izmal.

Want to experience life on an island? Make travel plans to the charming island of Isla Mujeres , known for its white-sand shores and turquoise waters.

The Yucatan coastline keeps its promises. On the program: relaxation in the shade of a coconut tree on immaculate white sand; diving to explore the extraordinary underwater world; and succulent restaurants on the beach.

My favorite is the one in Celestun, where you will even have the chance to observe pink flamingos.

You should include the city of Bacalar and the famous lagoon on your map while arranging your journey through the Yucatan Peninsula. 

Of course, a stay in Peru will pass by the discovery of the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu and Lima , the capital, will surprise the tourists by its unusual visits and its modernity.

But why go to Peru exactly? Because it is also a country of an unequaled human and cultural wealth which asks only to be discovered and appreciated by the adventurers of the XXIst century!

Why should you visit Lima , Peru? Even just for the architecture – to view the cathedral, church, and convent of San Francisco, or the stronghold of Real Felipe – and its museums, which are essential to understanding the history of the nation, it is an inescapable trip.

It is also an opportunity to visit Peruvian shops and buy some local wares, particularly wool clothing like ponchos, gloves, and hats.

After Lima, most vacationers staying in Peru head for Cuzco , the center of Inca culture and the city nearest to the renowned Machu Picchu. The best mode of transportation between these two cities is by air. 

After touring Cuzco and its unique neighborhoods, it is time to begin climbing the Andes in order to reach Machu Picchu , the lost metropolis of the Incas. It can be reached either by railway , which is very unique, or by a beautiful but lengthy hiking trail.

4. thailand .

The land of smiles is a dream travel destination for winter. The best time to visit Thailand is between November and February.

On the spot, you will clearly have something to forget the cold with the various activities to do, the Thai gastronomy , the visit of temples and sanctuaries , as well as the escapades on the nearby islands !

5. The Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a must for lazing on the beaches. It is also an opportunity to recharge the batteries after a bleak and nearly depressive winter.

So, explore the jungle, dive under the turquoise waters, enjoy the delicious beaches of Punta Cana , and take a day trip to Santo Domingo . In short, choose this country in 2024!

6. The Canary Islands

Whether it is Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife, or Fuerteventura, the archipelago of the Canary Islands is only a few hours’ flight away.

To escape the winter, you can enjoy the many landscapes, ranging from volcanic to paradisiacal . If you want to go with your family, the Spanish archipelago is the perfect destination for a vacation in an island setting.

7. The Maldives

Considered a true paradise on earth, the Maldives have always been popular. At the same time, is it impossible to resist the turquoise lagoons , the dominant sun, the multicolored fish, and the famous bungalows on stilts?

Without any hesitation, choosing the Maldives as a winter destination is an excellent choice. In terms of temperatures, the thermometer reads 30 degrees minimum! 

Most tourists don’t think much about it, but Africa is a continent you should visit at least once. For example, I recommend that you visit Kenya , a culturally significant destination known for its safaris.

But it’s not only that; go and discover Nairobi, the capital, as well as the Masa Mara reserve and the Amboseli park.

9. The French Caribbean

For a moment of escape, I recommend Guadeloupe and Martinique to enjoy a warm climate without leaving France .

During your trip, you can discover different cultures, Creole traditions, and beautiful natural landscapes. Of course, take the time to taste the local cuisine to bring a little balm to your heart.

10. Vietnam

Located near China and Thailand, Vietnam remains a protected country and is preserved from mass tourism.

Take advantage of the winter months to learn about a culture that is off the beaten path. Among the top activities to do, visiting Hanoi is a must, as is also visiting the city of Saigon, formerly known as Ho Chi Minh City… So, are you in?

11. Costa Rica

Located in Central America , Costa Rica offers interesting temperatures during winter: on average 26 degrees between December and April.

This advantage makes this country a favorite destination to enjoy the sun in the middle of winter. During your stay, discover the various natural parks, volcanic sites, the Rio Celeste waterfall , its forests and its sublime beaches. 

It’s true that the overwhelmingly green color of Costa Rica is what first catches your eye when you arrive. Of course, the many different animal species that call this nation home find its lush and verdant environment to be a true paradise. 

Want to unwind for a moment? Costa Rica has a variety of beaches that are all equally stunning. The Caribbean shore offers a completely different landscape, a Caribbean vibe, a mingling of Amerindian cultures, and untamed terrain. Natural basins and remote beaches can be found. 

One of the most well-liked things to do in the south of Costa Rica is to visit Nauyaca Falls . You can enjoy rock climbing, horseback riding, or swim in the 1000 square meter pool in addition to admiring the breathtaking natural surroundings.

Santa Teresa is a small beach town located on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica.

Because of its laid-back hippie vibe and incredible surf beaches, Santa Teresa has been on many people’s radars in recent years.

Without a doubt, Santa Teresa is gaining popularity over time and becoming one of the best places to visit in Costa Rica.

The smallest and busiest National Park in Costa Rica is Manuel Antonio . The cause is not really a mystery…

It’s quite simple. It has stunning white-sand beaches and is encircled by a lush, lovely rainforest where it is simple to view wildlife like sloths and monkeys.

12. Iceland

If you want to avoid the snow, I recommend you visit Iceland in the spring. It is the ideal time to discover the green landscapes, the cliffs, and above all, the return to light by leaving the winter behind!

On the temperature side, they are not warmer in the summer than in the spring; you should expect an average of 10 degrees, but the setting is really exceptional.

13. Croatia 

Cities such as Split and Dubrovnik have grown in popularity among tourists in recent years. So why not visit Croatia in 2024?

The season is ideal for exploring national parks, taking boat trips, and visiting cities on foot. Ideally, I advise you to organize a road trip through the Croatian regions, just for fun!

Unavoidable, Greece is a mythical destination in spring. Choosing this time of the year is a direct ticket to peace and quiet during your stay.

Once there, the Greek hospitality will make you feel good, not to mention the many historical monuments, archaeological sites, relics, beaches, and, of course, the Cyclades islands like Santorini ! If you want to know where to go in Greece, don’t hesitate to consult my article on this subject.

15. Andalusia, Spain

Spain is a must-see country for vacations. But I strongly recommend you visit Andalusia at the southern end of the country.

It’s a region rich in culture and history, with a past that is still very much alive but can be seen through its monuments.

So, consider renting a car to visit the cities of Seville , Cordoba , Granada , Cadiz , and the surrounding area to discover the local culture!

16. Italy 

To visit historic cities such as Bologna, Venice , Florence, Rome or Siena, I highly recommend leaving during the spring.

In addition to enjoying an excellent climate, you won’t be bothered by the tourist crowds. If you love mountain scenery, you want to go to the Dolomites in Italy!

Now it’s up to you to enjoy good pizzas , discover the must-see monuments and enjoy the typical Italian dolce vita.

17. United States

During this time of the year, the weather is really favorable in many parts of the United States. This is a great time to spend a nice vacation in the West, going to New York , Los Angeles , or Miami .

However, be careful; when you go to visit sites at high altitude, you may run into snow, so be careful and organize yourself well!

18. Namibia

Although Namibia is a dream travel destination at any time of the year, it is most interesting in the spring. From April onward, temperatures start at 15 degrees, reaching 30 degrees in May and June.

Overall, this is the perfect time to visit the national parks, the Namib Desert, go on safari, or explore the nature reserves.

Brazil is a vacation destination that is regularly forgotten. However, flying to this country in summer is a great advantage: it is a low-tourist season.

In addition to delivering warm and pleasant temperatures, go on a road trip to visit Rio de Janeiro, Salvador de Bahia, and Sao Paulo, as well as mythical places like the Amazon and the Iguazu Falls.

20. Bali, Indonesia

Summer vacations allow you to unwind, and there is no better place to do so than Bali! Without hesitation, I recommend this destination to discover the most beautiful rice fields, beaches, temples, and sanctuaries of the island.

One of the must-visit spots is the Karang Boma Cliff , offering breathtaking views of the ocean and the surrounding landscapes.

To relax, why not treat yourself to a massage session and some meditation? So, is this something that tempts you?

21. Corsica

The island of Beauty awaits you, if only for its idyllic beaches…Corsica is one of the best destinations to visit in 2024.

Corsica’s culture is really rich, as are its gastronomy and its history. Nevertheless, you should know that the island is famous for having the most beautiful creeks and natural pools in Europe.

It is a considerable asset not to be neglected!

Surprising and fascinating, Norway is perfect for nature lovers. If you want to experience something out of the ordinary during the summer, this is the country for you.

Although the cost of living is high, you’ll be amazed by the fjords, glaciers, and northern lights .

If you have a flexible budget, this is a dream travel destination to discover, even if you travel with children!  

23. Portugal

For those who don’t want to go very far in 2024, I think that Portugal is an excellent compromise.

Whether you want to visit Lisbon in three days, Porto , or the Algarve , your sun vacations will not disappoint.

24. Malta, Gozo and Comino

Need a sunny vacation? I can recommend Malta as well as the neighboring islands of Gozo and Comino.

Although Malta is not very big, it has a huge cultural and historical heritage. If you like museums and archaeological sites, you will be served. Or you can simply laze on the sand and bask in the hot sun!

25. The South of France

If you can’t afford to go abroad, why not stay in France and focus on the south of the country?

In fact, there are many beautiful places to visit, such as the French Riviera , Provence lavender fields , Pyrenees , the Camargue, Occitania, and many other fascinating places.

Plus, the temperatures are always very good in the south and even throughout the year, so why not take advantage of it?

How to plan your dream vacation

Sometimes you crave a vacation — but actually taking one feels out of reach. Maybe you're struggling to find the time or save up the money. Or maybe you just can't seem to launch those plans out of the group chat. Overcome that planning inertia and take the big trip of your dreams. Here's where to start your search, organize your logistics and enjoy yourself.

Hey, everybody. It's Marielle. You remember the early part of the pandemic when the days of isolation stretched into months? At night, I would lay on the floor of my apartment with my eyes closed and listen to guided meditations, to try to take myself to a happier place. One time the prompt was something like, picture yourself doing something that brings you great joy. The first thing that popped into my head was an image of me wandering the cobblestone streets of some small European village, probably in France. The sun was shining, and every step I took was a feast for the eyes. Medieval houses, colorful flowers resting in vases on outdoor tables, patisseries with gorgeous pastries in the window, just waiting to be eaten.

I didn't realize until that moment just how much I missed traveling and how badly I wanted to look at something outside of my four walls or the blocks of my neighborhood. The next year, I took a three-week trip to the U.K. and France, and I ate those pastries and wandered until my feet hurt and filled a hole that had been growing inside of me.

Big trips can do that. Lale Arikoglu knows what I'm talking about. She's the articles director at Conde Nast Traveler.

LALE ARIKOGLU: On a really basic level, I think it's just being able to have a break from the crush of regular life, whether that's work or childcare or school, wherever it may be, you know, the opportunity to just take yourself out of your routine and be somewhere else and get to immerse yourself in that place to me is, like, the main draw of it.

SEGARRA: Now, when we talk about a big trip, that could mean different things depending on your travel style and your budget. You know, it might be a long road trip or an extended stay at a cottage in the woods or a multi-city tour on another continent. But it's typically something you save up for and plan months in advance. Lale has a big trip coming up. She's going to Peru.

ARIKOGLU: I've been waiting to do it for a long time. The reason to go there is for a friend's wedding. And now I'm building a trip around it, and it's going to be about ten days long with multi-stops, you know, having to choose multiple places to stay. And logistically, you know, it's actually taking some thought and some planning. One of the things that we're going to do when we're there is hike Machu Picchu. There's a group of us going. And Machu Picchu - it's a dream to see and experience.

SEGARRA: Now, it's easy to get bogged down in trip planning. And it might stop you from booking the thing entirely, but Lale says, do it. It's worth it.

On this episode of LIFE KIT, Lale shares her best tips on planning the big trip of your dreams. We'll talk about where to start your search, what logistical questions you should ask yourself and how to actually relax and enjoy yourself once you're there.

SEGARRA: Let's say I do want to take a big trip, right? I'm feeling that itch to travel, but...

ARIKOGLU: Right.

SEGARRA: ...I don't have a destination in mind yet or a duration. I'm really starting from scratch. Where does the planning start?

ARIKOGLU: When you start the planning, you've really got to think what you want to get out of the trip. You know, If you really just want to decompress and relax and rest, then you probably don't want to do some like multi-stop European city trip, right? You probably don't want to hike Machu Picchu. Perhaps it is that you're incredibly bored of your surroundings, and you need adventure and you need excitement. And therefore, you're going to be thinking of some really different destinations. It might be that you're traveling alone for the first time. You've decided to do a solo trip. You know, where is a place that might feel comfortable for you as a solo traveler, but still feels like it's taking you out of your comfort zone? So I think it's sitting with yourself and thinking, OK, what is, like, the goal here? That's takeaway one. Ask yourself what do you want to get from this? Set the mission of your trip.

It feels like another really important detail at the beginning is budget, right? Like, how much money do you realistically want to spend on this trip or can you afford to spend?

ARIKOGLU: And, you know, that's going to look different for everyone. If we're talking big trips, rarely are they spontaneous, right? You're planning for a long time. So that also allows you to save and finance for it. No, there's lots of great savings apps that can just, you know, that take a little bit of money out of your paycheck every few weeks, and you can kind of start, like, a travel fund that way. I think that's quite a nice way to do it. But I think, you know, you can do a big trip on a budget. It doesn't have to be, I think, a lavish, international trip. I mean, you know, we're going into spring and summer, there are so many incredible national parks to see, there are so many amazing, very diverse, different cities. There's, like, so much on your doorstep, so I think you can really argue, you don't have to cross continents to have a big trip. And so if that feels a more affordable way to get away for a couple of weeks, then, you know, look in your backyard.

SEGARRA: Right. I wonder, too, like, part of budget, besides money, is also time. Like, how much vacation time do you have? Do you have any tips for people who don't have that much vacation time?

ARIKOGLU: So I think if you look at the calendar and you look at where the holiday weekends fall, There are some tricks to being able to kind of, like, turn your limited number of vacation days into - kind of you can stretch it out if you bookend it with a holiday weekend or something like that. But on the flip side, it's also most expensive time to travel, right? There is an argument for choosing shoulder season, so that's not traveling to a destination when it's at its peak. And this is great for your own personal experience, but it's also in terms of helping that destination deal with overtourism, overcrowding. If we're talking about Europe, for example, the summers are getting hotter. So avoiding those really intense, hot, summer seasons can actually be really advantageous for your own travel plans.

SEGARRA: Yeah. That seems like maybe the next thing to consider as you're planning a big trip before you start looking at destinations is what time of year are you looking to travel?

ARIKOGLU: Definitely. And that's more of a luxury for some people because If you're having to navigate school holidays, then you're a little bit more limited. But again, it's sort of when you're thinking about carving out those goals and what you want to get out of the trip. Maybe it's the seasonality that's really important. Maybe it's all you want is hot weather and a beach. You know, if you're planning some summer travel, you could totally flip things on its head and go experience winter somewhere. I went to Patagonia when it was entering into their fall in Chile, and it was a really magnificent time to be there, and it was when New York City was going into spring. It felt like upside-down land to be choosing to do that, and it was so wonderful. It was great.

SEGARRA: Yeah. I think there's a lot of room for creativity there. And also, as you said, like, it opens up more possibilities if you consider going places during the shoulder season.

ARIKOGLU: And you get to be in a place and actually be in the place with the people who live there. One thing in August, if you go to Europe, everyone who lives there has, you know, gone off somewhere else on vacation to escape the heat and the tourists, and so, you know, you're in Rome with just all the other tourists and none of the Romans.

SEGARRA: All right, so takeaway two. Before you land on a destination, think about your constraints. What time of year do you plan to travel? For how long? What budget are you working with? If you're short on time, you can make use of holidays or pick a destination closer to home. If you're short on money, think creatively. You know, maybe you do a road trip through some parks or cities nearby.

SEGARRA: It seems like another thing to consider here is, how much do you like crowds? Because for me, it kind of ruins a trip or an experience if everywhere I go is super crowded. I get very overwhelmed by that and overstimulated.

ARIKOGLU: And it's also, you know, who are the crowds? Because there's been times when I've gone somewhere and I've gone and done the same bucket list site that everyone else is, and you're sort of standing there and you're thinking, What am I actually here for? Well, what is the purpose of this? What am I getting out of it? What am I giving to this destination other than just being another member of the crowd?

SEGARRA: Yeah. I think that's an important question, right? 'Cause, like, we have been talking about what are you looking to get out of it, for the most part. But there's another side to this - right? - and it's what am I giving? And also, what am I taking? Like, am I taking too much from this place?

ARIKOGLU: I think about that a lot. When you're planning, be really thoughtful about where you're spending your money. When you're choosing a hotel, is it a hotel that is locally owned? What restaurants are you booking? Where are you shopping? Where are you buying your souvenirs? You know, I think there's lots of ways to be really thoughtful about, you know, how you spend your money, and that can go into your budgeting, as well.

SEGARRA: I know there are certain places that at a certain time, at least, they said, please, tourists, like, please stop coming or stop coming during this time.

ARIKOGLU: Yeah. When a destination says that, I mean, it's something to be taken so seriously because they're usually destinations that have an infrastructure or an economy that really relies on tourism. So things have to have gotten pretty bad for a destination to say, take a beat, not right now, and listen to that, and, you know, the place will be better for it when you do go see it.

SEGARRA: I picture it as if you were, like, going to - going over, like, a friend's house uninvited, or, like, if they were like, please, today's not good. Like, our whole family's sick, like, we're all throwing up, and then you were still banging on the door, like, hey, what are you doing? Can I come stay over?

ARIKOGLU: I think that is a perfect analogy. Perfect. And no one wants to be that person.

SEGARRA: No.

ARIKOGLU: I'd hate to be that person.

SEGARRA: That'd be weird behavior.

ARIKOGLU: Yeah.

SEGARRA: Takeaway three, travel responsibly. Research the places you're interested in, and make sure they want tourists at the time you're looking to visit. When you're booking, consider putting your money toward the local economy rather than international chains. Also, learn about whatever destination you choose. Be open to the cultural practices and languages there. And be a respectful visitor.

Anything else that people would want to figure out before they start narrowing down or looking at destinations?

ARIKOGLU: I think it's also thinking about who you want to travel with. Someone can be your best friend, but they can be your worst roommate. I think travel's kind of the same, so kind of finding someone to travel with or a group of people to travel with who you're aligned with in the planning stage, rather than when you get there and then you suddenly discover you all want to do different things. So I think communicating right off the back what you all want out of the trip and what you're excited about and also being really honest with each other about finances.

If you're on a group trip, I mean, it's like splitting the bill, but a thousand times worse. And so I think if you can kind of, like, set some parameters at the start and be really honest about what you feel comfortable spending money on because inevitably, there is going to be some people on the trip who want to spend more money on some things than others.

SEGARRA: Yeah. And it seems like that conversation, there should be some form of that before you book anything.

ARIKOGLU: Yes, 100%. And, you know, I think even if you don't feel comfortable doing it, speaking up if something just feels too expensive.

SEGARRA: All right. So takeaway four, figure out who you're traveling with. You might prefer to travel alone, or if you're going with friends, partners, or family, just make sure you're on the same page about what you want from the trip - the pace, the activities and how much money you can spend.

SEGARRA: OK. So it sounds like we've given people a lot of things to consider before they choose a destination. Once they've done this soul searching, how can they start to find destinations that fit those desires and limitations?

ARIKOGLU: For me, part of the fun of travel planning is doing the research, whether it is a trusted travel publication or reading some books you love or going on to - you know, there's, like, a ton of just, like, online communities of people who love swapping travel tips and actually, I think, can be really helpful.

SEGARRA: Yeah. I think it can be helpful maybe to in the brainstorming stage to just, like, not go in too deep but just make a list of places that seem exciting to you and that might fit your parameters. Like, I have a Google Doc, and it's just, like, places that I would be really excited to go.

SEGARRA: When you are considering a destination, how helpful is social media - is - like, seeing where your friends are going or where influencers are going? Is it a good idea to follow those trends?

ARIKOGLU: I think it can be useful in picking things you want to do once you're there, particularly if it's, like, based around, like, big events or openings. You know, we have our best places to go list that runs every year. It could be, like, new train routes, new hiking routes, new museums that have opened, things that are happening in destinations centered around an anniversary. So, you know, kind of consulting those sorts of lists and rounds up as well can be very helpful. But I think, you know, going back to what we were talking about in terms of over tourism or overcrowding - you know, on social media, you will see people at the same spots time and time again. And they're usually spots where just around the corner, there's also something equally beautiful to see.

SEGARRA: Yeah. Like, I remember when Santorini was really popular. And it's like, whew - like, if you could actually see what was going on behind that photo, like, you would hate being there because it's so - it's just way too many people...

ARIKOGLU: Right. Right.

SEGARRA: ...All lining up to take a picture in - against that beautiful backdrop.

ARIKOGLU: Exactly. And, you know, it's Santorini. It's all beautiful. It's all amazing.

SEGARRA: OK. So takeaway five is to choose a destination. And cast a wide net when you're brainstorming 'cause you never know what's going to catch your eye. Also, Lale says, do your best to think outside of the current travel trends. Though you can use them for inspiration.

So once you've got a destination in mind, how can you start to sketch out the details of the trip? And I guess I should say, how much detail do you really need to figure out?

ARIKOGLU: So I was going to say, don't overschedule yourself, and don't overbook yourself. I think I've been guilty of doing that before, and then you realize that you have no downtime. It might seem like you're being really efficient, but you need a little bit of spontaneity on your trip. Don't overschedule. If there are a few key things you really want to do that you feel you will be crushed if you don't get to do it, then book it. Make sure that's arranged all in advance. So maybe it's finding one thing on each day of your trip. That's what you center your day around and you can frame your itinerary around that, but I wouldn't overschedule.

SEGARRA: Yeah. And then I think when you look at these things potentially sketched out on different days, then you say like, you know, that seems too busy. What's the most important to me here? Like, which of these activities do I want to book ahead?

ARIKOGLU: Right. You know, if you're suddenly realizing - you're like, I am cramming a lot in if I try to go to these three places, then choosing which one to let go.

SEGARRA: Yeah. 'Cause that's always a consideration, too. Like, if you're flying somewhere far, you might think, well, I'm already going to Poland, should I also do Germany?

SEGARRA: There's that impulse, you know? Or I'm going to Poland, so I want to see all of Poland. But that can make for a very frenetic kind of trip.

ARIKOGLU: And you wouldn't tell someone who was visiting America to be like, well, you've come all the way to America, so if you're going to New York, then you also need to go to New Orleans.

SEGARRA: Right, right. Exactly. That's Takeaway 6 - keep your schedule light and malleable. Lally recommends picking only one activity to do for each day of your trip and then building a flexible itinerary around those.

You know, it occurs to me that another element of a big trip when I'm going into them - I know that something's going to go awry during it.

ARIKOGLU: Always (laughter).

SEGARRA: Yeah.

SEGARRA: I remember being in Barcelona when I was in college. I went by myself for, like, a week. And I speak Spanish, but it wasn't fluent at the time. And I just got - I just missed being able to easily say what I wanted to say, and I went into, like, a Wendy's or something because I just wanted something kind of American. And I got some chicken nuggets. I couldn't think how to say nuggets in Spanish. Like, I was like, is that even a word, like, in Spanish, or did they just say nuggets? And I just broke and started speaking in English because I was trying to only speak Spanish. And I was like, I give up. Like, can I get some chicken nuggets, please?

ARIKOGLU: The true American in you comes out screaming at chicken nuggets in a foreign McDonald's.

SEGARRA: Yeah, yeah, give me my nuggies.

ARIKOGLU: (Laughter).

SEGARRA: Yeah, I just - like, sometimes you just need to go roll up into a ball and eat your chicken nuggies and be by yourself for a minute and then come back out, you know?

ARIKOGLU: Yeah. I mean, like, travel so much of the time is sort of, like, infantilizing because you're so powerless. But it's, like, the same in an airport. You're just sort of powerless at a certain extent when things go wrong. And I think my approach to it - to sort of very taxing and challenging air travel schedules, with connections and potential miss flights and lost luggage and all the things that come with that - is to sort of just give myself up to the airport gods, and just as soon as I'm, like, through TSA, just be like, what will be will be. I'll get there eventually and just, like, I'm powerless. And that's been, like, for me, quite liberating. And it also means that I'm not the person screaming at some poor gate agent when things go wrong.

SEGARRA: Yeah, it's a moment of - it's actually an opportunity for mindfulness. Like, I think that could even be helpful going into a big trip, to tell yourself, like, something is going to go wrong. Yeah, just keep that in mind.

ARIKOGLU: Oh, my God, so much of travel is about being tired and hungry.

SEGARRA: We're really selling this.

ARIKOGLU: I know.

SEGARRA: (Laughter).

ARIKOGLU: I'm like, my whole job is to travel. It's great.

SEGARRA: Isn't it terrible? Yeah.

SEGARRA: I try to remind myself, like - what is the point? - like, go back to those goals. What is the point of this? It's to have a good experience, to meet those needs, to give myself what I've been craving.

ARIKOGLU: Exactly. And I don't know. This sounds a little cheesy and a little trite, but anyone who gets to travel is really lucky. Ultimately, it's a real privilege that you get to do it. And it's such a freedom and it's such a special thing.Don't make it stressful.

SEGARRA: That's our final takeaway. Something on your trip is bound to go wrong. So once you're there, sit back and try to surrender. After all, traveling in the first place is a treat.

Where should you vacation in may.

In May, the weather’s sweet, and the prices are reasonable, giving you abundant travel options. In the Northern Hemisphere, the world awakens from its winter slumber, birds sing, and nature blooms, creating a rejuvenating mood.

Not only that but with thin crowds, you’ve got everything to yourself, so you can explore in peace and get the most out of your trip. So, where should you go? We’ve compiled a list of the best places to visit in May, from coastal retreats to cultural hubs. Here’s where we’d go.

Picking a May destination is like perusing a color palette, with various shades to suit your fancy. Maybe you need a place to unwind by the ocean, take in the salty air, and enjoy fresh seafood. Or if you want to get closer to nature, going on safari in pristine wilderness could be the ticket. Either way, we’ve got something for you.

During May in Nantucket, you’ll have mile after mile of coastline to yourself, letting you soak in the ocean air in peace. Three million blooming daffodils capture the springtime feeling, and temps in the mid-50s to mid-60s are just right for relaxing. 

Then there’s the food. Visit local markets like Nantucket Seafoods or Glidden’s Island Seafood, and pick from fresh lobster, Nantucket Bay scallops, oysters, and much, much more. In our changing world, truly unspoiled places become more and more scarce. That can be especially true with regard to wildlife, with animals in zoos replacing those in their natural habitat. But Zambia lets you get up close and personal with elephants, lions, zebras, rhinos, and more.

With the Emerald Season ending, May is the perfect time to go on safari, providing mellow weather on long days and ideal lighting for vivid photographs. Besides that, Victoria Falls along the Zambezi River provides a stunning natural sight.

The Kentucky Derby lasts around two minutes. During that span, there’s unmatched tension and excitement as thoroughbreds strain and race toward the finish line. But the competition isn’t the only attraction on derby day. The track at Churchill Downs becomes a cultural hub with a vibrant atmosphere, celebratory mood, and unique Kentucky fare.

Try a mint julep cocktail — composed of whiskey, sugar, water, and mint — while you take in the festive hats worn by race attendees. Get up close with magnificent horses, whose athleticism and power are a sight to behold. Then, when the starting gate opens, get ready for two minutes like you’ve never experienced.

Italy is an epicenter of history, culture, art, and cuisine. Sicily offers that and more. Just off the toe of Italy’s boot, the island has warm Mediterranean waters, an active volcano, and fascinating ruins. Of course, there’s cuisine options in abundance, from Arancini — deep-fried Risotto rice balls — to Caponata — a salad containing eggplant, capers, olives, and more.

We’d visit the Mount Etna volcano for its continual eruptions that date back 500,000 years. After that, we’d take in Sicily’s ancient ruins, like those found in Agrigento and Selinunte. To cap things off, we’d explore Catania’s street food vendors for a mix of textures and flavors.

As spring takes shape and nature awakens, what better place to visit than this national gem? Toward the end of May, the park’s mostly open, letting you explore trails and attractions and bask in the pure environment. Since temps hover in the mid-50s, it’s neither cold nor hot, and you can savor the season’s spirit of renewal.

We’d venture to the Grand Prismatic Overlook Trail , then look for Bison in Lamar Valley. At Yellowstone Lake — 20 miles long and 14 miles wide, at 7,500 feet elevation,  — we’d hop in a kayak and take it all in. Then we’d set up camp and settle in for stargazing. 

For a mix of pleasure, thrift, and peace, traveling in May is hard to beat. You have pleasant weather that encourages relaxation. Light crowds and low prices let you enjoy on a budget. Nature’s bounty is on full display.

These destinations offer a little of everything, whether you’re after natural wonders or a rich cultural experience. Whichever you choose, you’re in for a memorable trip. Happy exploring.

Study: Many U.S. Citizens Can't Afford Their Dream Vacation. Here Are Tips On How You Can Save.

A recent study found that 43% of Americans believe their dream vacation is too expensive; here's how to save money on yours.

A recent survey revealed that more than 40% of travelers in the United States cannot afford their dream vacation.

Skift Research polled 1,001 Americans and learned that 43% of them considered their dream vacation as “financially challenging to achieve.”

The survey cited higher costs of travel and general inflation as two contributing factors.

But there are ways to make travel more affordable, despite the rising costs. Here are four steps to take

Set A Budget

When planning a trip, setting and sticking to a budget can help travelers plan track, and control their expenses. A budget increases the likelihood of planning ahead, prioritizing the most important expenses, and avoiding unnecessary ones.

Budgets can also set standards for the vacation. If a person intends to spend $1,000 total between flight and hotel, a $600 flight means their accommodations might need to be changed, or vice versa. Budgeting also helps travelers to make decisions most within their means.

A budget helps to save money by planning travel that is most ideal and affordable for them.

Be Flexible

Being flexible can yield significant savings for travelers. Choosing travel dates based on the most cost-effective time can save hundreds on flights and accommodations.

Another aspect of flexibility involves taking advantage of time-limited travel deals. Keeping an eye out for deals, discounts, and promotions can help travelers save money on various aspects of their trip, such as flights, accommodations, activities, or transportation.

Websites like Going and Costco Travel each share travel deals that don’t last long but are often significantly lower than the typical cost.

Show Loyalty

Signing up for loyalty programs with airlines, hotels, or rental car companies can help travelers save money. Loyalty programs give points or rewards that can be redeemed for free or discounted travel in the future.

Loyalty programs also offer additional perks and benefits, like early check-in or late check-out at hotels; a free checked bag on airlines; and even free food, like breakfast or snacks at some accommodations.

Using loyalty programs can result in significant savings over time.

Try a Destination ‘Dupe’

Destination dupes can be a budget-friendly alternative for travelers looking to experience highly-popular or luxury destinations.

A destination dupe is a location that closely resembles or feels like another popular place. The similarity can reside in the physical looks of the destination, what it offers, or the overall atmosphere.

Travelers can save money with destinations dupes because they are often less popular, less crowded and have lower costs.

U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.

A Gen Xer who got $250,000 in student loans forgiven said he can now finally start saving for retirement — and consider his dream of studying in India

• Joel Lambdin, 49, received $250,000 in student-loan forgiveness in January.
• It's a result of the Education Department's one-time account adjustments.
• Lambdin said the relief would allow him to save for retirement and consider long-term dreams.

Joel Lambdin finished graduate school in 1998 — but as a professional musician, he was hardly making enough money to pay off his student loans and other bills.

So Lambdin, now 49, said his only option to make ends meet was to put his student loans in forbearance — in which he was not making payments but interest was still accumulating .

"It was just so that I could subsist, so that I could survive," Lambdin told Business Insider. "With the hope that at some point, I would be making enough money that I would be able to take them out of forbearance and start paying them down."

But he grew to realize that the only way he could make a significant dent in his student loans was by switching careers. He didn't want to do that because he loved working in music, so he decided to keep his larger student loan in forbearance and begin paying off his smaller loan with a lower monthly payment.

He continued making those payments until the pandemic pause on student-loan payments , at which point he and his wife started making a plan of action to tackle the larger debt once the pause ended. That led them to discover the Education Department's initiative allowing some borrowers a one-time account adjustment . It lets the department evaluate borrowers' accounts and update payment progress toward forgiveness on income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness, including any payments made during a forbearance period.

That account adjustment led to a letter Lambdin received on January 31, reviewed by BI, from his student-loan servicer Aidvantage. It said: "Congratulations! The Biden-Harris Administration has forgiven your federal student loan(s) listed below with Aidvantage in full."

For Lambdin, that letter meant his $249,255 outstanding student-loan balance was effectively wiped out.

"It had started to feel like my fate was being decided for me by the cold hand of finance," Lambdin said, "and that was a weight that I didn't realize was there until it wasn't there."

He added: "The feeling was much more like putting down a backpack that was really full of books that you got used to. And then you put it down, and you're like, 'Oh, man, that feels so much better.' It's more like that, rather than sort of a jump-for-joy kind of situation."

While Lambdin is still working to determine what exactly the relief will mean for him and his wife, he said, discussing retirement is "a much more present conversation now" because contributing to savings is viable after the relief. He can also begin to look into buying a home.

The Education Department continues to cancel student debt through its one-time account adjustments, a process it plans to complete this summer. Most recently, the department wiped out $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers , some of whom benefited from the adjustments.

Beyond financial goals, Lambdin said the relief was also allowing him the freedom to pursue some of his long-term dreams, including taking a sabbatical to study with his meditation teacher in India.

"It's something that I wouldn't have been able to even consider doing if we had to pay off student loans, but without them, it's something that I can really seriously consider doing," he said. "And so those are the kinds of things that I think get really lost in the monetary side of the conversation about debt relief."

'I've been really lucky'

While Lambdin said he felt as though he earned the relief given his decades of payments, he recognized that it's not that easy for many other borrowers.

For example, as BI has previously reported , some borrowers who might qualify for relief through different repayment programs may not have gotten it yet because of paperwork backlogs and administrative errors. On top of that, funding for federal student-loan servicers is strained — meaning many borrowers face hourslong hold times and cannot get clear answers from customer service regarding their payment progress.

"There are some real horror stories out there, and I've been really lucky in that I haven't experienced the kinds of shenanigans that other people have experienced," Lambdin said. "So I actually feel very lucky that things have transpired the way they have."

Some of those horror stories include inaccurate payment projections and delayed billing statements . When it comes to student-loan forgiveness, some borrowers told BI that their servicer made a mistake with the forgiveness , reinstating their payments months later.

The Education Department has said it's aware of the challenges borrowers face and has established an accountability framework to punish servicers when they fail to fulfill their contractual obligations.

The department is also in the process of crafting its new plan for student-loan forgiveness — it recently released the draft text of the rules , which included relief for borrowers with unpaid interest and those who have been in repayment for at least 20 years.

As for Lambdin, he's still figuring out how to approach life without student debt hanging over his head. But now he can consider various options, and he can thank the loan forgiveness for that freedom.

"There's a certain amount of waiting for the other shoe to drop because it's not that I don't trust that it's happening but just that the debt has been with me for so long, and then it's not there," Lambdin said. "And it's something that I think really takes some getting used to."

A British couple quit their hectic jobs and moved their family to a yacht docked in Greece.

And after ditching the 9-to-5 grind, they couldn’t be happier.

Laura and Ross Colledge decided to set sail because they worried their family was too disconnected.

“Ross was working 50-plus hours a week, and we were like ships in the night,” Laura told What’s the Jam.

“He felt our children’s formative years were slipping away before our eyes and he was missing so much.”

The parents wanted to provide “an exciting, adventurous, non-consumerist upbringing” for their children to “make them more worldly” while also accommodating their children’s “extra educational needs” — one of their sons has ADHD and is suspected high-functioning autistic.

So the family remortgaged their newly renovated house, bought a 2005 Bavaria 42 yacht they’d checked out a few months prior and moved to Greece in the summer of 2019.

The Colledge family started their journey in Mykonos, sailed through the Aegean and Dodecanese islands and eventually settled in the Ionian Islands.

“We have both been water babies as surfers and kayakers in Newquay for many years, so the ocean has always drawn us in,” Laura said of their previous life in southwest England.

The Colledges have been galavanting around the Greek islands for five years now and have loved their sojourning lifestyle — despite the unpredictability it adds to their lives.

“Sailing life is very changeable, so getting a work/life balance is tricky,” Laura admitted.

“Maintaining any kind of routine is a challenge. You have to be able to ‘go chameleon’ when the weather or other circumstances demand a change of plan.”

Ross is captain of the family’s boat, while Laura is the first mate and both of them are directors of BoatFit , an online health and fitness site, and Sailing Holly Blue , which chronicles their water-bound adventures — including some done in the nude .

Noah is currently homeschooled and Josh attends an online virtual secondary school as they sail, making friends of all ages from all around the world.

“Once we achieve residency here in Greece, we plan to spread our wings further afield,” Laura said.

The family plans to eventually upgrade to a bigger boat when the boys get too big for their current vessel but, in the meantime, have added many additions to their boat to better accommodate the family.

“We’ve included solar power, lithium-ion batteries, a watermaker and other mod-cons that mean we can live completely off grid, utility bill-free and self-sufficient if we choose,” Laura said, noting that most of the renovations have been made possible by collaborating with sponsors from their social media accounts.

As for their mental health, the mom says there’s “nothing more grounding than being so close to nature and at the mercy of elements.

“All other things become so trivial,” Laura said.

“And relationship-wise, you will soon learn if the person you are with is your soulmate. Sailing life is a 24/7 pressure cooker at times, and you not only have to learn to pick your battles but also where you will and will not compromise,” she added.

“Your relationship deepens to an incredible level and your respect — as well as admiration for each other — strengthens, too.”
