Dubai Dress Code Explained: What to Wear in Dubai as a Tourist

Deciphering the Dubai dress code and what’s appropriate to pack for your trip to Dubai

The United Arab Emirates is a Muslim country but not as conservative as other parts of the Middle East and Central Asia when it comes to dress code expected of tourists.

That said, there are still minimum standards expected of tourists, and the dress code can vary depending on what situation you are in. Public places like the shopping mall , souks , government buildings, or a museum are treated quite differently from a resort or water park .

Whilst it’s important to dress for the warm desert climate, always bear your setting and what is culturally respectable in mind.

Dubai dress code: dressing for religion and the heat in dubai.

Although daytime temperatures throughout the year range from warm to very hot to scorching, you must remember at all times, you are in a Muslim country. It is possible to dress in a conservative manner that deals with the weather but remains respectful of local culture.

There are a few basic rules tourists should look to observe:

  • Aim to cover shoulders and knees
  • Avoid showing midriffs and cleavage
  • Avoid anything transparent or overly clingy
  • If someone does ask you to cover up – do so without protest

Yes, you will also hear conflicting advice in travel forums telling you to wear whatever you want, Dubai is so liberal etc, etc. Please don’t be that tourist!

Things such as the acceptance of western clothing have definitely evolved over the last 20 years as the city has considerably opened up to tourism. However, Islamic cultural roots in the city still run deep.

Just because you see someone else wearings something skimpier than you doesn’t make it OK! Show some respect to your hosts.

You will see that most local Emiratis and a large proportion of the expats in Dubai hailing from other GCC countries dress in a traditional regional outfit.

For men in Dubai, this is:

  • A long white kandora or dishdasha (you can see all the regional variations explained here !)
  • Ghutrah (headpiece) secured by a black igal (agal/egal as you please!)

For women in Dubai, this is:

  • A long black abaya
  • Black Shayla (head covering)
  • Very occasionally, you will still see some women with a metal burqa, but this is uncommon. Full niqabs or burkhas are extremely uncommon
  • Other colours are, of course, permitted, but local women will almost always be seen in public only in black

Dubai Dress Code For Women: What to Wear in Dubai as a Woman

Non-Muslim female visitors are by no means expected to dress in the same manner as local women nor have their heads covered at all, with some limited exceptions:

  • For women, carrying a shawl or pashmina with you is always a good idea to cover up if you feel awkward ā€“ and for a bit of sun and dust protection!
  • If you are entering the Grand Mosque  or any religious or government building, you will need to buy or hire a full-length abaya and cover your head.
  • Linen trousers, long shorts/cargos, and clothing made from natural fibers will be your best choices in the high temperatures of Dubai.
  • Women can wear leggings under a dress , a great solution if your dress is a little short, but avoid tight, revealing bottoms and showing too much cleavage.
  • Cut-off shorts, midriff tops, and spaghetti straps or strappy tops should be considered wardrobe no-gos for Dubai.
  • Maxi dresses or a maxi skirt are a great choice for ladies – day and night – (but we’d warn ladies to be aware of sweating and chaffing if wearing skirts/dresses! Try some anti-chaffing biker shorts underneath).
  • Sleeveless tops are acceptable in most situations where only your arms are shown.
  • Shorts that completely cover the bottom are acceptable now in most situations.

Dubai Dress Code for Men: What Should Men Wear Visiting Dubai?

  • For men, you will find that despite the heat, nearly all gents in Dubai wear full-length trousers.
  • Bringing some light chinos is a good idea for public places, or if wearing shorts, try and make them knee-length.
  • Avoid tank tops (other than at the beach/water parks) and be careful with the wording on any slogan t-shirts; wear nothing that could be construed as offensive.
The best thing to bear in mind is, “am I dressed with modesty?” If in doubt, a helpful hotel concierge may be able to guide you.

Dubai Dress Code: What Should I Wear to the Beach in Dubai?

You will see huge variations in what is considered appropriate at the beach and resort wear. For men, longer shorts are much preferred to skimpy brief-style Speedos – though I bet you’ll see plenty of budgie smugglers these days.

For ladies, where do we start?! It can be a minefield, and these days, there are very differing views on just how liberal attitudes are in Dubai in the 2020s. How much skin is too much skin? And on what parts of the body?!

You will see many Muslim women prefer to wear a full-length burkini by the water. Whilst at the opposite end of the spectrum, it’s not unusual at all to see extremely skimpy two-piece bikinis at exclusive beach clubs . Being topless is still a strict no-no.

dubai city tour dress code

For modesty, we would suggest something in between that you feel comfortable in. Anything scanty, and yes, you will get stared at. But also be respectful of your setting; If there are lots of families about, it’s not appropriate to have everything on display. Whereas in an adults-only beach bar, you may find almost anything, except being outright naked, might be acceptable.

It is very important to note when NOT at the beach or pool areas, cover up! This includes the public areas of your hotel or resort or if you are going into a restaurant. No full abaya is necessary, but it’s recommended ladies have an overshirt or dress pulled on top . For men, wearing any sort of top covering your bare chest is appropriate.

Public beaches will each have their own rules. At Jumeirah Beach, for example, they ask that women be fully covered, ie, you must have a sun top or rashguard on over your bathers. Not a bad idea in the sun anyway, but this may come as a surprise if you are used to how liberal the rules are in resorts. In other places like The Beach, JBR the rules are more relaxed.

If you are asked by security to cover up a little, do so without argument. Security officers are well within their right to call the police if you do not cooperate or become abusive – remember this is a big no-no in Dubai .

Dubai Dress Code: What Do I Wear in the Desert in Dubai?

A desert safari is one of the most popular excursions to undertake in Dubai . It does, however, raise questions about how to dress appropriately. You have not only heat and sand to contend with but desert activities which may involve bouncing about, riding camels, or taking on the dunes.

We would suggest wearing breathable natural materials to cope with the heat and sweat, but long shorts or long trousers are more appropriate for ladies than a long flowing dress, as pretty as it may look in photos.

  • We have a complete guide over here on how to dress appropriately for a Dubai Desert Safari .

Dubai Dress Code: What are children expected to wear in Dubai?

Prepubescent children should feel free to dress as they please, but teenagers have the same dress requirements as adults outlined above; this should be judged on their maturity rather than age alone.

You will notice that local children are dressed pretty much from head to toe, whatever the weather. The traditional local dress is normally reserved for religious occasions and special events for kids. However, even in the summer, Emirati children tend to be dressed in long clothing.

Visiting children are by no means obliged to do so and should dress for the weather. Dresses, shorts, or skirts on girls is absolutely fine (though if they are doing adventurous activities, as in any situation, leggings or tights underneath a dress or skirt might be a good idea).

Some more frequently asked clothing questions for Dubai

Non-Muslim women are not expected to have their hair covered. You will only want a head covering if going into a religious building and some Government buildings.

Yes, it is acceptable in a beach or resort setting to wear a bikini. See our advice above though about appropriate settings for wearing a bikini in Dubai.

Yes, there’s a time and a place for your short shorts (within a resort/beach club or private setting), and times when you should wear full trousers or a long skirt/leg covering. On most occasions, you should dress for the heat, and shorts are acceptable. Try to keep them at least mid-thigh length or longer out of respect in public places.

Yes, in most situations, it is OK to wear figure-hugging leggings in Dubai. We would suggest it’s appropriate to wear a long top to cover your bottom in some public settings, though not essential. Many ladies wearing shorter dresses or skirts like to wear leggings underneath. Leggings may also be appropriate winter wear if you are heading out to the mountains or desert and taking on strenuous outdoor activities.

Yes, in most situations, skinny jeans, like leggings, are absolutely fine. The only place this may not be appropriate is a religious building. We would suggest ladies place an abaya on top of their outfits. These are inexpensive to pick up at one of the souks and will make a great souvenir from your Middle East vacation.

For the most part, yes. However, the jury is still out on when and where this is appropriate. You will find for men, the rules are quite strict; you should pretty much only be wearing sleeveless tops at the beach. It’s not appropriate for men to wear a tank top at the mall, souks, museums, or religious buildings. Likewise, it will be against most restaurants and bars’ dress policies for men not to have shirt sleeves. For women, there’s a little more leniency in sleeveless tops. You will see it’s against the rules published on most shopping mall doors, but it’s rarely enforced. Same with going out to a restaurant; only if a strict dress code is published or in religious buildings would you strictly be prohibited entry if your clothing is seen as too skimpy on your shoulders. As a precautionary measure, it never hurts to bring a cardigan or pashmina/wrap with you if you feel uncomfortable or are asked to cover up.

In the right place, yes. We’d keep anything that reveals your midriff only for the beach. In shopping malls, such as Dubai Mall , and many other public buildings, this is against the published rules and may draw unwanted attention. It would be a strict no in museums and religious buildings. On a desert safari, you’re pushing your luck too!

We’d urge you to think about the situation before wearing a very short dress in Dubai. At a nightclub , fancy weekend brunch, or night out with the ladies, yes, a short dress would be acceptable. A short dress is not appropriate in a shopping mall (though you’ll see them!), mosque, or souk. Your underwear should not be visible if you bend in any way. And even in appropriate settings, think about how you’re getting to and from the venue when making your wardrobe choices.

Of course! Open footwear is the norm and acceptable pretty much everywhere. You may want something a little more dressy for dining out; all but the finest of establishments will let you in with flip-flops of any quality and variety!

If you’re visiting over the coolest months, December to February, you are likely going to want some warmer clothing for the early mornings and evenings – though visiting from any cooler country, you may not think the winters are too cold! Overnight in the desert or mountains though, you will definitely notice it.

If you’re heading to Abu Dhabi on your trip to the UAE, a very similar dress code applies to Dubai. As your trip is likely to involve stops at places such as the Grand Mosque, the Louvre, and Qasr al Watan , the presidential palace, a more conservative dress standard will be expected. There are very specific dress code standards for the Grand Mosque that should be followed, whilst other buildings ask for a respectful standard – this means knees and shoulders covered as a rule of thumb. Alternatively, if you’re taking a trip to the Yas Island theme parks , bathers are appropriate for Yas Waterworld, but you’ll want to be covered up for your journey. Ferrari World and Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi, you’ll need to be out of your swimwear and wearing something appropriate for high-speed rides. We thoroughly explain the Abu Dhabi dress code over here .

Dubai Mall, and any mall in Dubai, is considered a public place, so a respectful level of dress is required – we explain this in a lot more detail for Dubai Mall over here .

Guide to the Dubai dress code! What to wear in Dubai

  • Dubai Dress Code
  • Dress Code for Tourists
  • Packing List for Summer
  • Packing List for Winter
  • Occasional Dress Code

If you’re travelling to Dubai for the first time , one of the main questions you’ll likely have is, ā€œWhat is the dress code in Dubai for tourists?ā€ When visiting any country, learning about the local culture is always a good idea to show your hosts the necessary respect. With that in mind, we’ve put together this guide about the dress code in Dubai so you can enjoy your time in the emirate without causing any offence.

Is there a dress code in Dubai?

Since the national religion of the UAE is Islam, visitors are expected and encouraged to dress in modest clothing. According to the official website of the UAE Government, visitors are expected to dress modestly in public places. These include spaces like places of worship and shopping malls. Some important points to remember about the dress code in Dubai for men and women are as follows :

  • Clothing should not indecently reveal parts of the body or display offensive images/slogans .
  • Nudity is strictly forbidden.
  • Swimwear is not allowed in public places. However, it can be worn in pools and beaches.
  • Out of respect for Islamic tradition, female travellers must wear abayas or head coverings when visiting mosques. Often, mosques in Dubai will keep these in stock for visitors. Men are also expected to dress in an appropriate way when visiting a mosque.
  • Visitors, both men and women, are encouraged to wear clothes that cover their shoulders, arms and legs.

How strict is the dress code in Dubai?

Dubai is home to different cultures where most forms of dress are acceptable. You certainly aren’t restricted to any one type of clothing! However, it’s always advisable and respectful to abide by the emirate’s local traditions regarding dress codes and stick to outfits that cover the knees and shoulders.Ā

Women in traditional garb in Dubai

The dress code in Dubai for women and men does not apply to a place of residence or hotel room. However, it applies to public places such as malls, hotels and tourist spots. For example, tourists will find that malls in Dubai have signs at the entrance which ask visitors to dress modestly.Ā

Why is there a dress code in Dubai?

The dress code for appropriate clothing in Dubai does not just exist because the national religion is Islam. The emirate of Dubai also prides itself on being a very family-friendly city for visitors and residents. Emiratis, the local people of the UAE, also tend to dress modestly, and it would be disrespectful for visitors to dress otherwise in the city. So, when packing for a trip to Dubai, pack appropriate clothing that is not adverse to cultural sensitivities.Ā

Dubai dress code for tourists

The general rule regarding dressing in public in Dubai is to wear clothing covering your shoulders and knees. It’s best to refrain from wearing clothing that is too tight or too revealing for both men and women. Carrying a light sweater or shawl in public places is a good idea .Ā

Make sure you dress for the weather, too! For the hotter months in Dubai, tourists can stick to comfortable and loose-fitting clothes made from a light material, as long as it’s not too revealing.

As for the dress code for male tourists in Dubai, men should wear clothing that covers the chest and knees. Swimwear is allowed only at the beach or swimming pools.

For a better idea, here is a rundown of dress restrictions and to-dos for men and women.

DRESS WEAR IN DUBAI FOR WOMEN: WHAT TO AVOID WEARING IN PUBLIC

  • Skirts or shorts that end too far up the knees
  • Fitted or tight clothes
  • See-through clothing
  • Clothes that reveal the midriff
  • Clothing with potentially offensive slogans or logos
  • Tops or bottoms where undergarments hang out
  • Swimsuits or bikinis

WHAT CAN BE WORN IN PUBLIC

  • Shorts and skirts with appropriate lengths
  • Pants or trousers
  • T-shirts and jeans
  • Long dresses
  • Sneakers or trainers

CLOTHES RULES IN DUBAI FOR MEN: WHAT MUST NOT BE WORN IN PUBLIC

  • Low hanging singlets
  • Shirts that reveal the midriff
  • Pants that are too tight
  • Cotton pants
  • Shirts or T-shorts
  • Sneakers/ trainers
  • Basically, clothing that appropriately covers the body

What to pack for Dubai for summer?

Visiting Dubai for the first time during the hotter months? In this case, your attire for Dubai can include light clothing. Summers, especially from June to August, tend to get very hot. In general, tourists can keep the following tips in mind:

  • Everyday wear: Breathable clothing in shorts, jumpsuits, and dresses work well during the warmer months. However, it is advisable to avoid baring more skin than necessary, like the shoulders.
  • Beach days: Pack a swimsuit or two if you plan to hit the beach. These are allowed on beaches, but ensure you have something to cover up when off the shore.
  • Indoor spaces: These spaces in the emirate are always air-conditioned. While malls are comfortable, you may need a shawl or other covering for smaller indoor spaces like cinemas to keep the chill away.

What to pack for Dubai for winter?

Wondering how to dress in Dubai for winter? You will find the beaches crowded during sunny winters. It is also ideal to visit outdoor attractions like the Hatta Wadi Hub .

  • Desert: The desert can get very chilly at night during this time. Bring a thick jacket to cover up.
  • Outdoor venues: Seasonal attractions like Dubai Miracle Garden are open this season. A light jacket or other covering can make the experience more enjoyable.

Dress code for the occasion

The same rules do not apply everywhere in Dubai. They also depend on the venue or occasion like these.

Clothes rules in Dubai for heritage tours

A visit to Dubai warrants a heritage tour or two, especially mosques, some of which are considered among the most beautiful in the world. Generally, the dress code in the mosques in Dubai is the strictest. All visitors are expected to dress modestly. So yes, dress restrictions in Dubai apply here the most. Women are required to wear a headscarf and long and loose clothing. Men have to cover their knees.

While a headscarf is not necessary in traditional Arabian souks, it is still advisable to dress modestly in such areas. So, keep those shorts or skirts past the knees and wear trousers and covered tops.

Desert Safari Dress Code

These are often organised by locals so a rule of thumb is to dress modestly or don clothing that isn’t too revealing. So women should skip dresses that go above the knees or are see-through. For men, T-shirts, shorts or any pants will do. It gets chilly at night, so sleeved clothing is the way to go. As for footwear, avoid flip flips, as you can lose them in the sand. Go for sandals.

Clothes to wear in Dubai for brunch

All-you-can-eat brunches in the emirate are the forte of hotels in Dubai. And hotels have rules on how guests should dress for the luxury. Make sure you visit their website or call to enquire about the rules before your visit.

Dress code for visiting malls

Malls in Dubai are fully air-conditioned and are a reprieve during the hotter season. Wear clothing with long sleeves or a covering if you tend to get chilly. Most visitors sport semi-conservative attire in malls.

What To Wear in Dubai! PRACTICAL & HONEST Advice for Tourists to Dubai 2024-25!

Categories Middle East , Packing , UAE

What to wear in Dubai brings up a few questions, what to wear for the hot weather in Dubai , what to wear in Dubai to be culturally appropriate, and what can you REALLY wear in Dubai?

In this Dubai travel blog, I am going to cover the different angles of how to dress in Dubai to help you plan your Dubai holiday outfits and I’m going to be honest!

I love Dubai! I’ve been a few times over the years. I am Muslim now so you’ll see me dressed modestly and in a hijab in this article but I first went to Dubai before I became Muslim to visit my friend who was working for Emirates Airline which was a lot of fun and I wore different clothes then!

Now, there are a lot of posts on what to wear in Dubai with advice for tourists but in this post, I am going to give you a much more PRACTICAL and UP-TO-DATE look at how to dress in Dubai because since my first visit in 2015 and my last in 2023, SO much has changed !

I was actually so surprised by the number of women I saw in short shorts and short dresses in Dubai this year and these were not tourists who didn’t know any better, they were people living and working in Dubai so we can assume that they are okay to dress like that as they wouldn’t risk getting in trouble by what they are wearing because of their visa and job would they?!

At the end of the day, it’s all about what to wear in Dubai at the RIGHT TIME and in the RIGHT PLACE. What you wear to a club and to the beach in Dubai is not the same as what you’d wear to the mall, a restaurant or a tourist attraction and that’s what I’m going to cover!

What to Wear in Dubai

What to wear in Dubai

Firstly, like in all of my ‘what to wear’ posts that I currently have for Abu Dhabi , Saudia Arabia , Qatar , Istanbul and India , it’s important to cover the legal aspect as many people think countries like the UAE and therefore cities like Dubai have a legal dress requirement, which isn’t actually the case…

Find What You're Looking For Easily Here!

What is the Dress Code in Dubai

There is no set dress code in Dubai . Legally, you do not have to wear anything or not wear anything in Dubai (aside from the standard of underwear and covering of private areas as you do everywhere in the world!).

However, it is recommended and preferred to dress conservatively / modestly / covered meaning shoulders, knees and mid-drift are covered.

This doesn’t mean you can wear whatever you want wherever you want in Dubai as certain tourist attractions, certain areas, restaurants, bars etc will have dress codes , but that’s just like everywhere in the world!

What not to wear in Dubai these days is common sense and what you would or wouldn’t wear in other cities in the world too!

tourists in Dubai in the Souks, What to wear in Dubai

What Do Locals Wear in Dubai?

Modesty and conservative dressing are because the UAE is a Muslim Country and therefore Dubai is a Muslim City and Muslims dress modestly with women generally covering their legs, shoulders and most of their arms, plus sometimes their hair and men covering their legs and chest areas too.

Whilst the majority of people you’ll see in Dubai are holidaymakers or foreign workers, Emiratis make up about 11% of the population and you’ll most commonly see men in White Kandoras and women in Black Abayas .

Tourists do not need to dress like the locals in Dubai though… unless you want to. As a man, the Kandora is very comfortable and breezy to wear and I was pleasantly surprised to see so many male tourists in Abu Dhabi Grand Mosaque wearing the traditional long Kandora.

And I love wearing Abayas as they are so elegant!

Ellie at Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque, What to wear in Dubai

What Do Foreigners Wear in Dubai?

It’s likely you’re not going to Dubai to look like an Emirati, so let’s look at the people in between the Emirates and the holidaymakers.. the nearly 90% of the population that live in Dubai but are not from the UAE !

What makes Dubai so amazing is the huge diversity of people who live, work and visit there and this is why the dress code for Dubai is actually not that strict because you’ll see women from many different countries like the Philippines, Pakistan, U.K., USA, all wearing different clothes and in many cases, clothes that are very similar to what they wear at home.

I love following DXB_HUN on Instagram, a Brit who has been living and working in Dubai (teaching in a school and now a full-time content creator) for a few years and you’ll see despite the usual advice to cover legs below the knee, she most often wear shorter dresses out for Brunch , the Mall, Restaurants and more.

However, you’ll also notice this is paired with a long sleeve or t-shirt sleeve rather than a strapless as when you have one part of the dress that is covered it still provides an overall more modest outfit.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Coral Stevens (@dxb_hun)

This is also what I mean by how much has changed over the years in Dubai ! When I first visited in 2015 my friend who lived in Dubai at the time would wear whatever she wanted to a club in Dubai but she wouldn’t wear a short dress to the mall. Now, it’s much more common and accepted and you’ll see lots of women wearing outfits like this around Dubai now.

However, it’s worth noting that if you live in Dubai and work there, you know what to wear in each area.

Workers in Dubai are not going to tourist attractions and are generally staying in their ‘ex-pat areas’ of Dubai or Downtown Dubai. Whereas, tourists wanting to visit the Souks in Old Dubai will need to dress more modestly in this area of Dubai than Downtown.

So that takes us to what can you wear in Dubai!

I will give you some examples of places to visit in Dubai that will require different outfit choices…

Below that, I’ve touched on the dress code in Dubai for children if you plan a trip to Dubai with kids!

Dubai Dress Code for Tourists

What to wear in Dubai and especially what to wear in Dubai as a woman depends on where you’re going and you’ll need to choose differently for different situations, but let’s be honest, that happens anywhere in the world!

What to wear to the mall in Dubai

Firstly, the malls in Dubai are super air-conditioned so you’re bound to get a bit cold if you are wearing very little clothing so modesty or not, it’s a good idea for women to have a light extra layer to put over their shoulders or a shawl and wear something longer in the legs like a long skirt or maxi/midi dress .

Same with men, they shouldn’t wear vest tops and should wear a t-shirt to cover their shoulders and shorts that are not too short.

For what to wear to be culturally appropriate, shopping malls in Dubai are not the same as being by the beach or Dubai Marina. You’ll see many locals in the malls dressed in their traditional wear and tourists stick out like a sore thumb when they are wearing very little clothing inside as well as it not looking respectful.

What to wear to tourist attractions in Dubai

There is no set dress code for the tourist attractions in Dubai but many will mention even on their websites like Dubai Frame that ‘appropriate clothing is required’ which means you are dressed in a nice way.

Most guides on what to wear in Dubai as a woman will say you need your shoulders covered but honestly, if you go to Dubai Frame in a dress with small straps and your shoulders out, you shouldn’t have a problem, as long as the dress is modest in other areas like the chest and legs with the top part of your legs covered at least and ideally past the knees if you have your shoulders on show.. It’s all about balance!

In regards to mid-drift, if you have some of your stomach showing, this shouldn’t be a problem as long as your trousers/shorts/skirt are not super tight or short and the rest of your top covers your shoulders.. again, balance!

Men should wear a t-shirt, not a vest top and not wear shorts that are too short.

The Burj Khalifa’s conversation deck is the same as Dubai Frame, no set dress code but clothing must be appropriate.

However, there is a dress code for the Burj Khalifa At.mosphere restaurant because it’s a restaurant, the same as the Burj Al Arab . Dubai Tickets advised the dress code is :

At the lounge, a smart/casual dress code is expected, while at the restaurant a smart/elegant dress code is required. Here’s what’s not allowed: caps, t-shirts, shorts, trainers, sports clothing, flip-flops for women and open-toe shoes for men.

What to wear to the beach in Dubai

There are 2 types of beaches in Dubai , Private and Public Beaches.

Private Beaches are those attached to hotels or require a fee to be paid to enter. Private beaches are for foreign visitors on holiday and therefore there are no rules on what to wear at the beach in Dubai aside from obviously needing to be fully covered.. no topless sunbathing here.

Bikinis are allowed and even thong bikini bottoms are allowed (they used to be against the law).

Pubic Beaches are public that anyone can enter. In countries like Qatar you need to be conscious of what you wear on a public beach since many locals go and generally modest dress is required, this is the case with some beaches in Dubai but generally these days, all of the best public beaches in Dubai you are likely to go to as a holidaymaker like Jumeriah, La Mer, Kite Beach, you can also wear ‘normal’ swimwear of a bikini, swim costume, swim shorts for men.

The main 2 things to be aware of at the beaches in Dubai are:

  • Do not leave the beach in just a bikini/costume, you should put a cover-up on to go into any shops, cafes or even toilets where you need to leave the sand of the beach.
  • Use the changing rooms nearby, don’t try to get changed in or out of swimwear on the beach which could cause you to show some nakedness if the towel slips.

What to wear to a restaurant in Dubai

If you are going to a relaxed restaurant inside a mall or a fast food type of place, as long as you are dressed modestly in something that covers either your legs or your shoulders and is not swimwear, you will be ok to eat there, you can wear flip flops for example.

If you are going to a fancy restaurant in Dubai the dress code will be along the lines of this: a smart/elegant dress code not allowing caps, t-shirts, shorts, trainers, sports clothing, flip-flops for women and open-toe shoes for men. This just requires common sense and is the same as a dress code all around the world in nice restaurants.

If you are going to Dubai Marina which is a great place to visit in the evenings in Dubai, it will depend on where you plan to go.

You’ll see people at Dubai Marina at night time in clothes from the day time maybe because they were at the beach and didn’t get changed. This is okay as long as you are not in swimwear or a sheer beach cover-up and you plan to dine somewhere casual or just walk around.

If you plan to dine casually at Dubai Marina, you can wear flip-flops for example and sports clothing as long as it’s not too short/small.

There are many of the top restaurants in Dubai at Dubai Marina which are fancy places to go, for these, you will need to follow the dress code of smart/elegant as mentioned above.

What to wear to a bar or club in Dubai

The bars and clubs are a totally different side of Dubai and since Muslims do not drink, locals do not visit these places. Therefore, the dress code is far more relaxed and there are not really any rules…

Of course, like all around the world, you need to dress smartly to enter a club or bar but generally, there are no set rules and what you can wear in the clubs in Dubai is like anywhere else in the world.

It’s worth noting that ‘going out out’ in Dubai doesn’t always mean at night, Brunches are a big deal in Dubai and this doesn’t mean a sit-down meal in a cool cafe with avo on toast, it means a full-day party at a hotel! Here’s a break down of what to wear in Dubai for brunch and in the clubs at night !

What to wear to a mosque in Dubai

To be honest, there isn’t one ‘Grand Mosque’ in Dubai that is for tourists to visit. Instead, most tourists to Dubai take a day trip to Abu Dhabi to visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, easily the top thing to do in Abu Dhabi !

When visiting Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, you’ll need to be covered, this includes men and women with shoulders covered, legs covered and a good amount of your arms. Plus hair for women, however they are not strict on all the hair being covered as it is hard to keep a head scarf in place.

The mosque used to give out Abayas for tourists to wear but they changed this a few years ago. Now, you will need to bring your own modest clothing . However, if you don’t have anything, there is a mall called the New Visitor Center & Plaza at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque underneath the mosque that sells clothing for tourists to wear at the mosque including well-priced traditional Kandoras for men and Abayas and dresses for women.

What Should Children Wear in Dubai?

If you are planning a family trip to Dubai , don’t worry about what should children wear in Dubai as there are no expectations for children to cover (aside from the normal covering they do everywhere in the world).

Even for Muslims, until girls and boys hit puberty there is no need for them to cover. You will see Muslim girls in summer dresses in the malls and at the beach just like everywhere else in the world.

Locals may choose to dress their children in swimwear that is more covered like a child’s rash vest or all in one piece, this isn’t something you NEED to dress your child in Dubai however the sun is hot and strong in Dubai so covered kids swimwear like all in one suits and rash vests are great sun protection too and something to keep in mind.

What Do Men Wear in Dubai?

A lot of this post has been aimed at what to wear in Dubai as a Woman because, I am a woman, so let’s touch quickly on what should men wear in Dubai.

Whilst many posts will say men shouldn’t wear shorts, realistically, these days, shorts are fine for men to wear in Dubai in most casual situations, just ensure the shorts are closer to the knee rather than high up the thigh.

Linen trousers for men are a good option if they want to dress more conservatively and like local men do without getting too hot.

Men can wear t-shirts with their arms showing in Dubai in most casual situations too without any issues. Vest stops with shoulders showing should be avoided.

Linen shirts are great for covering more whilst also looking smart and not getting too hot.

What Dresses to Wear in Dubai

I’ve said how it’s best to dress more modestly and covered up in Dubai but how do you do that ?

I think dresses are the best way because they are light and airy even when they are longer in length.

There are so many maxi and midi dresses available online right now and I love that on many clothing websites like ASOS, Marks & Spencer, H&M and Next you can filter by the dress length and choose maxi or midi.

A long maxi dress to the floor / your ankles or a midi dress past your knees and to your calves that isn’t too low in the chest with either 3/4 length sleeves, t-shirt sleeves or even sleeveless with a chunky strap is a perfect dress to wear in Dubai to keep you covered and modest whilst not causing you to get too hot.

Why Dress Modestly in Dubai?

If you can’t get told off and there are no rules anymore… why should you bother wearing more covered clothing in Dubai?

Firstly, it’s respect to the culture . Emirati people really respect tourists who dress more even though its not the law and you will feel this in your interactions with people there.

Secondly, whilst you will feel safe in Dubai wearing less clothing because Dubai is such a safe city , you will feel more comfortable in modest clothing because a lot of people around you will be doing the same too.

It’s actually funny people watching in Dubai because you can tell who lives there and who is visiting by how little some tourists are wearing.

Thirdly, it’s part of the experience of visiting the Middle East. As I said in my post on what to wear in Saudi Arabia , so many times, we want to travel and experience countries as a local wearing local clothing and in countries like the UAE and cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi we can do that by wearing a traditional Kandora for Men or long flowing dress for women or simply just dressing more modestly,

And if this isn’t something you want to do, Dubai isn’t the place for you , at the end of the day, there are plenty of other holiday destinations around the world where you don’t need to worry about what to wear.

What to Wear in Dubai to Stay Cool

You may have clicked on this post looking for what to wear in Dubai in December, November, January and February as these are the peak months for tourism in Dubai because the weather is hot but the coolest it gets all year round.

My main tips for how to dress in Dubai to stay cool are:

  • Bring clothes that are a light material. Linen and Cotton and good for this over Polyesta.
  • Don’t bring clothes that have a lot of layers. Some summer dresses have a lot of layers and are not good in high heat.

One big thing to note is that there is so much air-con in Dubai . Pretty much everywhere inside is air-conditioned and it actually gets quite cold . This is another reason to carry a shawl or extra light layer with you, not just to cover yourself for modesty but in case you’re shopping or eating and you feel cold.

Museums, Malls, Restaurants, and attractions like Dubai Frame once you’re inside, they’re all air-conditioned!

Plus, in winter it does get cooler at night , especially in January. You’ll see locals and people who live in Dubai in jackets and their ‘winter clothes’. As a tourist, especially from the UK and Europe, you won’t feel it’s that cold but you may get a bit chilly so bring a light layer.

what to wear as a family in Dubai, family in Dubai in appropriate clothing, what to wear in Dubai

In regards to what to wear in Dubai in the summer , I was in Abu Dhabi in July this year which has a similar temperature and oh wow, it was hot and humid outside.. but it was extra cold inside everywhere because of the air con!

I thought I’d live on Frozen Yogurt whilst there because it would be so hot but once I’d been in a mall for 10 minutes, I felt too cold to eat something cold too!

What To Wear in Dubai (Clothing Advice for Tourists)

What To Wear in Dubai (Clothing Advice for Tourists)

One of the most asked questions by travelers to Dubai and the other United Arab Emirates is ‘ what to wear ?’. ‘Do I need to cover my hair?’. ‘Can I wear a bikini on the beach or at a waterpark in Dubai?’. ‘Can I wear a short dress at a shopping mall in Abu-Dhabi?’ ‘Can I wear shorts in Dubai?’…

Women are usually the ones who seek advice, but men should also inform about the local habits as they too might need to wear long pants, a shirt, and closed shoes on some occasions…

So what to wear in Dubai? In this post, you’ll find no-nonsense practical advice and real-life examples of what clothes to wear in Dubai as a tourist. Read on!

What clothing is appropriate in Muslim countries depends so much on which country you are visiting, but also on the places you go to. If in doubt, always go for the safer version (covered arms and legs) and women should also carry a thin headscarf in case they need to cover their hair.

I bought a maxi skirt, especially for our Dubai trip. Although it wasn’t really necessary, I wore it on a couple of occasions in Dubai and felt very much at ease anywhere we went.

I think one should always be respectful of the local habits of the country and its people . Just as people should be respectful of our way of life when they come to the West! But that’s another topic, so let’s not get into politics….

This simple guide to what to wear in Dubai should help you pack and feel more at ease when traveling to Dubai, UAE. Find out!

Dubai clothing advice for tourists - practical guide and tips

What to wear in Dubai: practical advice for travelers

Dubai is actually very relaxed and open-minded when it comes to clothing. As the public is very international, so is the clothing.

You will see people wearing all imaginable sorts of clothing in Dubai – from shorts and sleeveless t-shirts to burqas.

But don’t forget that it’s a Muslim country and you are a guest. So once again – if in doubt, always go for the ‘safer’ choice.

Dress code at Dubai hotels, restaurants, and malls

Most malls, restaurants, and hotels in Dubai ask customers to ‘dress modestly’ and advise to cover your knees and shoulders. However, we saw many people who didn’t fit this description and nobody really seemed to be bothered.

As long as you stay in the very touristic places (hotels, malls…), you can pretty much wear whatever you want in Dubai. The rules might be enforced more strictly if you visit during the Ramadan, so keep this in mind.

Most upmarket restaurants require that men wear long trousers and closed shoes; women can wear sandals at any time.

Beachwear is only for the beach, so don’t go to a restaurant wearing only a bikini or swimming shorts.

What to wear on the beach, swimming pools & water parks in Dubai

Any type of beachwear from bikini to full-cover Islamic swimsuits is allowed at all beaches, pools, and waterparks, like e.g. Aquaventure Waterpark at Atlantis, The Palm .

The only rule on Dubai beaches and waterparks is no nudity.

What to wear in United Arab Emirates mosques, traditional markets, and rural areas

In the old part of Dubai where traditional markets like Spice Souk or Gold Souk are located, you will be surrounded by many more locals and Muslims from other countries than expats or tourists from the West.

Here, you will be much more at ease and avoid the stares if you will dress more conservatively.

If you are planning to go to some rural areas in the Emirates or visit a mosque, you should better leave sleeveless blouses and shorts at the hotel. Covered arms and legs for both men and women are advisable, and women have to also cover their hair inside the mosque. The mosques that allow non-muslim visits, usually provide appropriate clothing if needed.

What to wear on Dubai desert safari

One of the most popular tourist activities outside the city is visiting the desert . I would recommend wearing pants, shorts, or capri pants (no skirts or mini shorts) and a T-shirt or a blouse. Don’t forget sun protection!

Don’t use the picture below as an example of what to wear in Dubai desert. Your experience will definitely be a lot warmer than ours.

Normally, it’s very hot in the desert, so wear light clothes that protect you from the sun. It was very cold in the desert when we visited in December, so if you encounter the same exceptionally cold weather, take a sweater or even a jacket as it can get really cold in the desert in the evening. Sandals or closed shoes – depends on your preference.

TIP: Here you can find the best Dubai desert tours .

Clothing advice for Abu Dhabi and the other Emirates

We haven’t been to the other Emirates, but I heard that Abu-Dhabi is already much more conservative than Dubai and that women are often stared at if they are dressed the way we do in the West. That makes me think that all the other emirates are even more traditional.

From what I understand, Dubai is by far the most tolerant of the 7 of the United Arabic Emirates, so keep that in mind if traveling outside of Dubai.

Update after a comment from a reader who grew up in Abu Dhabi. This is what she said: ‘ I’m an expat born and brought up in Abu Dhabi and was free to dress however I please, including shorter shorts and sleeveless…(Abu Dhabi) is just as open-minded in terms of dress (as Dubai)’.

What to wear for women traveling to Dubai alone

If you are traveling to Dubai alone as a woman or with a group of girlfriends, and especially at night, you are probably better off dressing modestly.

It’s your choice, of course, but I say this based on the way many men stared at two young ladies in tight mini-dresses we met at the Dubai Marina one night.

Do you need warm clothing in Dubai?

Normally, you only need summer clothing and footwear in Dubai. A thin sweater can be nice for some cooler evenings in winter or inside the malls.

In December, when we visited, the malls were air-conditioned but not so cold that you would need a sweater. I hear that it might be different in the warmer seasons and you may want to take a thin sweater with you when going shopping – just in case the AC works too hard.

We visited Dubai for Christmas and New Year, and the temperatures we had were pretty much as cold as it gets over there. Minimum temperatures in Dubai in winter are around 20°C (68°F) and the maximum temperatures of 28°C (82°F) during the day.

One day we even had some rain (it hardly ever rains in Dubai) and that was also the day we visited the desert. You’ve got to be lucky, right?! The wind was very cold and we wore long pants and a sweater during the day and a thin rain jacket in the evening.

Except for this one day, we never needed jeans or jackets in Dubai and only used our sweaters once or twice at night. My closed shoes stayed in the suitcase during the entire trip.

What should you definitely pack for Dubai?

I’m not going to give the whole packing list because packing for Dubai is pretty much the same as packing for any other warm destination. So here are just a few tips.

First, make sure you carry a summer shawl/wrap which you can use to cover your head, shoulders, or knees if needed.

Second, wear comfortable summer sandals . You will look a bit out of the place with the hiking sandals though. Sportive sandals are ok for children and for men during the day.

What to wear in Dubai in winter?

If you are visiting Dubai in the winter months such as December and January, you should pack some warmer clothes as well. It’s usually very warm during the day when a T-shirt will suffice but can get quite cold in the evening and at night.

When traveling to Dubai in winter, make sure to pack a pair of long pants/long skirt and a sweater. A light jacket is good to have as well, especially if you are planning any evening trips on the water or in the desert.

In addition to the above, here are some frequently asked questions we get about what to wear in Dubai:

When visiting Dubai as a tourist, you will be glad to know that the dress code in tourist places and hotels isn’t very strict. Men can wear shorts, pants, shirts, or T-shirts. Women can wear dresses, skirts, shorts, and T-shirts, blouses, tops… The dress code is somewhat stricter at shopping malls, local areas, and mosques, and also during Ramadan. When in doubt, cover your knees and shoulders.

Yes, you can wear leggings in Dubai, but ideally not as your only pants. Leggings can be used to cover your legs, especially under short dresses or shorts. If you only wear leggings, it’s probably best to wear a very long blouse on top.

The dress code in Dubai is quite liberal. Usually, you can wear pretty much what you like, certainly in tourist places and hotels and their adjacent beaches. There are guidelines of what is acceptable and some places have stricter rules than others, but – in general – if you cover up your shoulders and knees, you should be fine even in the more traditional areas.

Depending on what places your tour visits, there might be a dress code. But in general, you can wear any casual clothes that you feel comfortable in.

Yes, women can wear pants in Dubai. You may want to avoid leggings or very tight pants, also because it’s usually very warm. Looser clothes will be more comfortable.

No, women are not required to cover their hair in Dubai. This might be required at certain religious places, but places that have this requirement usually also offer to borrow appropriate clothing to cover up.

Going to Dubai for the first time in February 15,2024. Don't know what to take.

Hi Gale, just take whatever you would normally pack for a warm-weather destination and read the tips in our article for Dubai-specific info. Have a great trip!

Friday 10th of November 2023

Hello I will be travelling to dubai on December 29th 2023 . I am having a hard time on deciding what clothes to carry with me because , i don't know if its going to be a hot season or cold season

@Jurga thank you,

Hi Stephanie, winter is the 'cold' season in Dubai, however, it's never really cold. Well, not unless you are coming from a very warm climate - I assume it depends on what you are used to :). Most of the time, daytime temperatures in Dubai in December are around 20-27Ā°C and you can walk around in short sleeves. For us, that's like summer weather in Belgium :) But it can get a bit colder at night so you need to take somewhat warmer clothes with you as well. I would pack summer clothes, a sweater or two, and a pair of long pants/skirt. If you are planning on spending time in the desert at night, then you may want to pack a light jacket too. Hope this helps.

Wednesday 25th of October 2023

Leaving next week. Can a 65 yo male where shorts, and do they need to cover the knee. We will be in Dubai, and Al Maha. Thank you!

Thursday 26th of October 2023

Hi Brian, you will see people wearing shorts in Dubai and it's really not a big deal that they are just above the knee (I would avoid the ones that hardly cover anything, but I'm sure that's not what you mean :)). It will be ok for most places. You may want to pack a pair of long pants in case you want to visit a mosque or some more rural area, and just in general - always good to have them, even if just to wear on the plane or for dinner. But in Dubai most places are quite used to tourists and more relaxed clothing by now. Have a great trip!

Sunday 15th of October 2023

Thank you for the information I've been going back and forth with my clothes selection in my closet.

Monday 16th of October 2023

Ha ha, I know the feeling, Brigette. But don't overpack - you usually need a lot less than you think. Have a great time in Dubai!

Thursday 12th of October 2023

We are going on a tour of Dubai, from a cruise ship, in early December. It includes tea at Burj Al Arab Hotel, which has a smart-casual dress code, no sandals or athletic shoes. Would white pants with a pretty blouse be out of place in Dubai in December?

Saturday 14th of October 2023

Hi Fay, white pants and a pretty blouse sounds good to me. Enjoy Dubai!

If it’s your first time visiting Dubai, you may rightly be confused about what to wear in Dubai and what to pack, considering that the weather in Dubai can be very hot in summer (think 52 degrees Celsius). If you really want to enjoy your trip, you’ve got to plan carefully when to visit Dubai and you have got to pack right.

While the UAE is an Islamic country, Dubai is surprisingly modern, multicultural, and fashionable. Over 70% of the population is made of expatriates and Western culture is predominant, BUT the locals are always dressed modestly.

You might have seen social media influencers and celebrities posting updates from Dubai, perched on skyscrapers or riding camels in the desert, dressed in tiny shorts. Well, as someone who was born and raised in Dubai, and has been resident here all my life, I’m just going to say it- sadly, social media or the ‘gram is not a reliable point of reference to understand how to dress appropriately in Dubai.

These jarring contrasts can leave you wondering about the right Dubai dress code. I know that not everyone understands how to pack for Dubai because ever so often readers will write to me with these questions which I’ve gone on to answer in detail in this guide:

  • Do you have to wear an abaya or burqa (or traditional Dubai clothing) in Dubai?
  • Can you wear a bikini on the beach in Dubai ?
  • Can you wear shorts in Dubai ?
  • Can you wear ripped jeans in Dubai ?
  • I’ve heard you should only wear loose clothing in Dubai, should I bring only linen pants, scarves and long-sleeved shirts?

What To Wear in Dubai

First, let me say this: Dubai is a modern city in the UAE. A majority of the population in Dubai is made up of expats from all over the world including the Indian subcontinent, other parts of Asia and the African continent, and some neighborhoods are predominantly home to expats from the West.

Traditional Dubai clothing is modest, classic and beautiful, and modern versions can also be high-fashion. But you as a tourist do not need to wear traditional Dubai dress.

In fact, Dubai is perhaps the most modern, cosmopolitan and forward-looking city in the Middle East, and tolerance is one of the foundations of Emirati society and culture. The only thing that is expected of tourists is to be respectful.

When it comes to the all-important question of what to wear in Dubai as a tourist, the answer is simple- wear clothing that is stylish and appropriate for the weather, AND for the culture. This is especially important if you plan to take day trips from Dubai to small towns or villages in other emirates like Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, where the rules might differ and a bit more modesty is appreciated.

You might also be interested in my posts about what to wear in Dubai, best romantic hotels in Dubai , and the most interesting Dubai day trips .

And check my post on the best time to visit Dubai to help you understand the weather and know what to expect.

So, what can women wear in Dubai , you ask? Women can wear summer dresses, jumpsuits, skirts and tops, jeans, leggings and even shorts. Men would dress like they would anywhere else- so, men can wear shirts, t-shirts, shorts, trousers, and jeans. Western, international clothing is perfectly acceptable in Dubai, as long as it is not too skimpy, which might work in nightclubs and bars, but won’t appear sensible on the streets or in the souks.

You are also welcome to wear your national dress in Dubai, as long as it is modest- you’ll see many nationalities like Indians and others from the subcontinent wearing their national attire such as saris and salwar kameez.

As a local in Dubai, I squirm in irritation when I see someone dressed inappropriately in a shopping mall, to the movies, or on the metro. It’s easy for me to see, quite plainly and obviously, why a certain attire might be completely wrong in Dubai.

So I decided to write this guide to what to wear in Dubai in the hope that it helps you pack right and know what to wear and how to dress in Dubai. I hope it inspires you to reflect upon the implications of tourists’ behavior abroad, and how, a little respect and regard goes a long way to appreciate cultures that might be vastly different from our own.

Other than suggesting outfit ideas for your Dubai trip, I’ve also included detailed answers to some frequently asked questions, so that in addition to knowing what to pack and how to dress in Dubai, you can also understand and hopefully appreciate the why of it all. Finally, I’ve included a section on what NOT to wear in Dubai , so that you can avoid making innocent mistakes that invite serious consequences.

Does Dubai Have a Dress Code?

Yes, there are dress codes in Dubai, depending on where you’re going.

Public places in Dubai do have a dress code that’s clearly defined- you’ll see this at the entrance to shopping malls, retail and entertainment areas, beaches, and parks. This is both thoughtful and practical because when you have a city that is so multicultural, dressing decently and modestly can mean different things to different people, depending upon where they’re from, and the same applies to tourists.

  • Briefly, in public places like shopping malls or on the metro, women may wear jeans, trousers, dresses, shorts, or skirts that are nearly knee length, and tops and dresses with sleeves or that are sleeveless, but not extremely low-cut or backless.
  • Men must also be mindful of the length of their shorts and ensure it’s appropriate for a mall or casual restaurant, and wear a shirt or t-shirt with sleeves.
  • Men must button their shirts in public places- I only say this because I have, in the past, been shocked to see a bare-chested gentleman (or two) at the Dubai Mall and Dubai Marina Mall, shirt casually thrown on but unbuttoned. Please do not be that guy.

Basically, don’t dress like you’re going to the beach or gym when you’re not actually at the beach or gym, and you should be fine.

Of course, this is different from the Dubai dress code for mosques, beaches, bars and nightclubs, and desert safari and I’ve gone into more detail about those in the following sections.

How to dress in dubai as a female tourist.

Or maybe what you’re really wondering is: How much skin is too much? This is where the unspoken rules of dressing right come into play. Now to be honest, I’ve read similar ‘how to dress in Dubai’ posts where the authors talk about how it’s okay to wear what you want in Dubai because everyone does it anyway.

I strongly disagree and here’s why: I’m all for cultural exchange and female empowerment, and so are the locals in the UAE. You only have to look to the achievements of the fierce, independent Emirati women here to recognize that. And even as the hardcore feminist that I am, I believe that dressing respectfully is a matter of showing regard for the sanctity of local culture, as a guest in someone else’s home .

In Dubai, how much skin show is okay largely depends on where you’re dressing for . While dressing as a female tourist in Dubai, think about if there will be many locals and families where you’re going- the shopping malls, cinema, park, mosque, cultural event, local restaurant, or just young, party-happy expats- beach club party, brunch, and nightclub etc.

If you’re going to a place with a mix of both, then dress like you would in public places like shopping malls or the metro, i.e. in a way that is not offensive to the local culture.

What to wear in dubai for men.

This guide has detailed advice for what to wear in Dubai for both men and women in individual sections. But briefly, men must dress appropriately as well while adhering to the dress codes for each place, especially restaurants and bars.

Men can wear shirts, t-shirts, shorts, trousers, and jeans, but should refrain from wearing vests and tanks except at the beach or gym. It’s not acceptable for men to be shirtless in public anywhere except at the beach or poolside.

How To Know If You Should Dress Modestly in Dubai

Consider this- will there be locals and local families around where you’re going? You can expect that to be the case in shopping malls, at the cinema, in public parks, souks, old parts of Dubai like Jumeirah, Deira, Al Fahidi, and Satwa, where you will invariably find yourself shopping for souvenirs from Dubai as well as local and casual restaurants. If the answer is yes, you should dress modestly.

If you expect to be around the newer parts of Dubai that are mainly home to expats, such as Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Beach Residence or Jumeirah Lake Towers, or are going to the beach, a beach party or pool party in a hotel, a fancy restaurant, bar, or club in a hotel, you can dress much more freely.

But It’s Hot: What To Wear in Dubai in Summer

The need for tourists in Dubai to dress sensibly does not mean you have to cover yourself in yards of fabric, especially in summer when it’s hot and not exactly the best time to visit Dubai . Like I said, Dubai is fashionable and you’ll find that people here are dressed like they would be in any big city.

In summer, temperatures can go up to 52 degrees Celsius and some summer days in Dubai can see as much as 90% humidity. Here are some tips on how to dress in Dubai in summer:

  • If you’re visiting Dubai in summer, pack clothing that is light and breezy fabrics that won’t cling to your skin and will allow you to breathe. Cotton and linen work well on such days, and light colors absorb less heat when you’re outdoors.
  • Women should pack shorts, t-shirts, tops, and shirts, summer dresses, maxis, and midi skirts.
  • I also personally prefer culottes and palazzo pants in vibrant summer prints or neutral colors over jeans in summer. In fact, I do everything I can to avoid wearing tight jeans in summer.
  • To dress modestly or a bit more conservatively in summer in Dubai, consider maxi dresses, skirts, culottes and short-sleeved tops.
  • Finally, don’t forget your swimwear so you can take a dip at the beach or in a hotel pool on hot summer days.
  • In summer, men should pack t-shirts and shorts, but always bring shirts and trousers and at least a nice jacket that you can throw on if you happen to go to a fancy restaurant or bar.
  • The thing with packing for Dubai, no matter how hot it is that time of year is, that you should be prepared for the fact that it’s almost always cold indoors because of air-conditioning, whether that is in the malls, offices, or bars and restaurants, so you’ll want to bring at least one or two jackets or cardigans (one casual, the other dressy). This applies for both men and women.

From fitted denims, dungarees, skirts, shirts, tops, and dresses, to jumpsuits and shorts, here’s how to dress in Dubai in different situations.

What To Wear to the Beach in Dubai

Beachwear is allowed on public beaches in Dubai- but strictly on the beach only. The Dubai beaches dress code says that women can wear bikinis and swimwear at both public and private beaches in hotels and pools (but my advice- leave your skimpy Brazilian thongs at home because they’re not appropriate at public beaches). Women should not wear transparent swimwear- you could be barred from entering beaches and pools, even in the hotels.

Men can wear swimwear as they would in any other city in the world, but please don’t show up in transparent, or white swimwear that becomes transparent in the water.

Coverup / Crochet swimsuit / Beach tote / Strapless swimsuit / Sunglasses / Sandals

You’re not allowed to wear swimwear anywhere else other than the beach or pool, which means you can’t walk on the roads or sit at the beachside cafes and promenades in Dubai in your swimwear. You’ll need to cover up with shorts and a tank top, sundress, kaftan, or maxi. So don’t forget to pack a cover-up- that is an essential must-have when it comes to Dubai’s beach dress code.

If you’re going to the beach, don’t show up to take the metro there in skimpy shorts and a transparent top thrown over a bikini. The metro is a public place where you should be dressed modestly (see section for public places).

Flip-flops in Dubai are great but only for the beach. For malls and other places where you’ll be walking a lot, wear comfy sandals, shoes, or sneakers.

What To Wear to Wild Wadi or Another Water Park in Dubai

If you’re hoping for water adventures in one of Dubai’s amazing themed water parks like Wild Wadi and Aquaventure, you should know that the Wild Wadi dress code and the code at other water parks requires you to wear proper swimwear, whether that’s one-piece swimsuits, bikinis, full body swimsuits, or another type of bathing suit (including burkinis).

Your swimwear should not be transparent (skip the thongs too).

Don’t show up in your underwear, flowing dress, or clothing that isn’t a bathing suit and expect to be allowed on the rides or in the water.

What To Wear to Public Places in Dubai

By public places I mean the shopping malls, metro, parks, souks and markets, restaurants, cafés, food or other festivals, and cultural events- you get the idea.

Women can wear tops, shirts, t-shirts with fitted jeans  or trousers , maxi or midi dresses, summer dresses, and skirts that are nearly knee-length and jumpsuits.

The Dubai dress code for female tourists is about maintaining the rules of modesty that don’t make local families uncomfortable in their own home.

What To Wear to The Dubai Mall and other Shopping Malls in Dubai

Shopping malls in Dubai have a dress code but rarely will a security person come to tell you to cover up- that’s probably more unpleasant for them than for you. You’ll see the Dubai Mall Dress Code and the same for other malls displayed on signs at the entrances.

  • Your clothes should be at least nearly knee-length and your top shouldn’t have a plunging neckline or backless. If that’s the case bring a shawl, cardigan or light jacket to cover up.
  • Plus keep in mind that the malls in Dubai are air-conditioned- so while this may seem peculiar, it is true that it can get very cold indoors even when it’s very warm outside- you’d rather be covered up than not!
  • Skirts in Dubai are okay- but again mind the length of your skirt and think about where in Dubai you’re headed.
  • Mini-skirts are okay in a bar or club or for a brunch or to the beach, but they’re not a good choice for the mall or a souk. Maxi or midi-skirts, on the other hand, are okay to be worn in most places.
  • Generally speaking, summer dresses in Dubai, especially maxis, work very well and are great for the weather too.

What to Wear to Souks in Dubai

Souks are old, traditional markets in Dubai, though most of them have been renovated, so they are newer constructions but in the heritage style of architecture. They are excellent places to shop for souvenirs from Dubai and gifts for loved ones back home.

If you’re going to old Dubai or the souks of Deira, expect that you’ll be walking around a lot in areas with a South Asian population (Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis etc,) as well as Emiratis, Omanis, Iranians, Syrians, and others from around the region, many who work in retail in the local markets and souks, away from the glitzy shopping malls and the expat areas of new Dubai. To them, new Dubai might feel like another world and they’re still used to Dubai’s more conservative and traditional ways.

  • It’s best to dress modestly here in the souks or on a walking tour in Dubai.
  • Cover your bare shoulders with a light scarf and don’t wear something too short, tight, or revealing, to avoid second glances.
  • A shirt or top and jeans, culottes or midi or maxi skirts are good choices here. You can also wear a midi or maxi dress with sleeves, that does not cling to your body.
  • You can wear sandals or any type of shoes that are easy to walk around in.

My tips are from the perspective of a Dubai born and raised expat along with style tips for both men and women to help you gain cultural context when you pack for Dubai.

Wearing Shorts in Dubai

The question of can women wear shorts in Dubai is perhaps the most common one. The simple answer is Yes, women can wear shorts in Dubai, but that is not recommended everywhere in Dubai.

  • While packing shorts for Dubai, bring the most modest pairs you own- extremely short shorts are frowned upon, except at the beach.
  • You should not wear super-short shorts where the dress code explicitly asks that you cover your shoulders and knees (such as shopping malls).
  • You also should not wear tight, thigh-grazing shorts in the more conservative parts of the city such as some parts of old Dubai, Deira and the souks. It is okay to wear shorts in new Dubai areas such as Marina and JBR where mostly expats live.

Can men wear shorts in Dubai? Of course, except where more formal dress codes are enforced- such as some hotel restaurants and bars. But men too must be mindful of the length of their shorts. Think more Dubai, and less the beaches of Costa Brava!

What To Wear to a Mosque in Dubai

Some mosques in Dubai, such as Jumeirah Mosque, are open to the public for set tours and it should be common sense to dress modestly there. In fact, the only thing you should think about when planning what to wear in a Dubai mosque is dressing appropriately in terms of covering up.

  • Women should wear pants , trousers, or a maxi skirt with a top or shirt that has short or long-sleeves (latter preferred) or long dress that isn’t too tight, with sleeves.
  • Ensure that you’re not baring your shoulders, cleavage, back, knees, or midriff.
  • Bring a scarf for your head, though you will most likely be asked to slip an abaya (traditional black robe for women) on top of what you’re wearing and will be given a shayla (head scarf) as well.
  • Men should wear shirts or t-shirts (with sleeves) and full-length pants or jeans. No shorts and no tank tops.
  • Men also might be requested to slip on a kandora (traditional white robe for men) on top of their clothes if they aren’t adequately covered.
  • You can see the Jumeirah Mosque Dress Code here.

What To Wear to the Desert in Dubai

You’re most likely going to go on a desert safari in Dubai, and spend an afternoon and evening in the desert. During the day, it gets very hot and sunny and you’ll be doing activities like riding on a camel, sandboarding, and riding a quad-bike on dunes.

Moreover, bear in mind that you might be meeting and interacting with local guides on your desert safari- it’s best to show up looking like you respect their culture and have been mindful of modesty with respect to your clothing choices.

  • Pick a desert safari outfit in Dubai, that is light and practical, like linen trousers, culottes, palazzo pants, jeans , or light joggers paired with a casual t-shirt, top, or shirt.
  • Women should avoid shorts and short dresses, not only because they’re uncomfortable to do these activities in but also because the evenings can get quite chilly (so bring a warm jacket or shawl).
  • Long skirts and dresses are fine if you think you can ride a quad-bike and camels (although I wouldn’t).

What To Wear to Nice Restaurants and Bars in Dubai

On your Dubai holiday, you’re sure to go to classy restaurants and bars with a semi-formal or formal dress code. The key to dressing right when it comes to Dubai’s evening wear, is to dress to look both elegant and trendy.

Women can wear jumpsuits, rompers, dresses, or tops and shirts with pants, jeans , or skirts and shoes (sneakers might not be allowed). Of course, in such restaurants, the majority of which are in international hotels, it’s okay if your dress, skirt, or outfit is above the knee and your outfit is strappy or has a deep back or plunging neckline. But keep it classy and bring a jacket or shawl to cover up while getting there and after you leave.

For such restaurants and bars, men should pack a few dressy shirts and polo shirts, pants, and dark wash jeans (that aren’t ripped) along with formal or semi-formal shoes , as many restaurants and bars have a dress code for shoes. Keep your sneakers for the daytime and casual dining venues and bars.

Is There a Burj Khalifa Dress Code?

If you’re going up to the observation deck at the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper, then you don’t need to worry about a dress code- just dress as you would in public places in Dubai- and you’ll probably want to look nice for the photos.

However, a Burj Khalifa Dress Code applies if you’re visiting Atmosphere, the restaurant and lounge that is located at the Burj Khalifa. You can see the Burj Khalifa dress code for Atmosphere here in detail- but briefly put the dress code is Smart/Elegant for the restaurant and Smart/Casual for the lounge- so you cannot enter in shorts, t-shirts, athletic wear, caps, trainers, flip-flops for women, and open shoes for men.

What To Wear to Nightclubs in Dubai

The nightclubs in Dubai are located inside international hotels and you’d dress just as you would in any other city with an active nightlife. Feel free to wear cocktail dresses, short skirts, halter-neck or off-shoulder tops, or strapless dresses.

Ladies, wear covered shoes and know that some fancier places will only let you in if you’re wearing heels.

The same is true for men; many nightclubs and bars in Dubai have a policy that says no shorts or sneakers. Many venues have a strict dress code for shoes- so wear dress shoes and be prepared to level up your style game, if you plan on going clubbing in Dubai and want to avoid disappointment. What To Wear to Business Meetings in Dubai

If you’re mixing business with leisure and wondering how to dress in Dubai, know that people are always dressed well in business settings. Business attire in Dubai is smart, classy, and modest.

  • Men may wear shirts and formal trousers, or suits and blazers with formal shoes.
  • Most, but not all men wear ties in formal settings.
  • Office wear for ladies in Dubai includes formal dresses, suits, formal tops, blouses, and shirts with pencil skirts and trousers.
  • As all offices in Dubai are air-conditioned, it can get very cold indoors- you might want to pack a jacket just in case.
  • The traditional Emirati attire of the white kandora for men and the black abaya for women is acceptable business attire in Dubai, and one you will commonly see at government offices in Dubai.

What to Wear to the Dubai Opera

If it’s your first time in Dubai, you should try to watch a show at the Dubai Opera, it’s a fantastic experience if you can afford it. While there’s no official dress code at the Dubai Opera , you CAN dress nice if you like- you’re certainly encouraged to do so by the venue itself. But don’t worry if casual is more your style- you will not be denied entry if you’re in jeans and a shirt, but please don’t show up in shorts and flip-flops.

I personally like to dress up a bit, you know, just because I don’t go the Dubai Opera every weekend- it’s very much a special occasion visit for me.

  • For women, I recommend dresses , or tops with pants or skirts, with a nice jacket for women and semi-formal or formal shoes or sandals with a bit of a heel.
  • For men, a suit or a shirt and trousers with a nice jacket and bowtie for men, with closed formal shoes.
  • You can also choose to wear an evening gown or tuxedo if you like, there are plenty of very nicely and formally dressed opera-goers at the Dubai Opera. But if that feels too over the top and if you’re packing light, a nice dress for women and a shirt with trousers for men will do just fine.

However, without going into too much detail and to let you decide how formally you want to dress for the opera, here are some outfit suggestions:

What To Wear To Ski Dubai

You’ve probably planned to visit Ski Dubai, the indoor ski resort with penguins at the Mall of Emirates where you can go skiing in -4 ° C when its 50 ° C outside in summer, because it really is one of the coolest things to do in Dubai (no pun intended)!

So what is the dress code for Ski Dubai when you can’t exactly don winter parkas on your way there? The good news is that Ski Dubai offers guests all the winter clothing and gear they need to be comfortable inside, including jackets, warm ski trousers, fleece and waterproof gloves, ski or snowboarding boots, and disposable socks that are laundered after every use. Equipment and outfit rental is included in all the packages including the Slope, Snow Park, and Snow Penguin packages.

But my advice is that it’s best to additionally wear or bring a layer or two that will keep you adequately warm under the rental jacket and trousers – such as a long-sleeved shirt and pullover or turtleneck, reasonably warm trousers, rather than cotton leggings, thermal underwear if you own a pair, scarves, maybe a fleece jacket, and a warm hat. You can also rent a locker at Ski Dubai, so you can just keep the layers you don’t use in there, but it’s nice to have the option in case the gear provided isn’t warm enough for you.

What Accessories Should I Pack for Dubai

  • If you like dressing up, bring statement pieces (jewelry, belts etc) that could glam up otherwise minimal outfits.
  • At least one pair of heels (if you plan on going to a club).
  • A light scarf to cover up bare shoulders in a shopping mall or your head for when you’re going to a mosque. Fits easily in a bag and is fairly versatile!
  • A cross-body bag , stylish backpack , or tote for exploring the city during the day (Dubai isn’t really a sporty/outdoorsy city so your daypack won’t exactly help you blend in) and a clutch or small purse for nights out.
  • A trendy hat or cap for when you’ll be outdoors during the day.
  • Sunglasses – you’ll need them year-round during the day.
  • Pack a cap or hat for sunny afternoons.
  • You’ll also need a smart pair of sunglasses .
  • Bring a cross-body bag for daytime exploration if you need more space than your wallet.

What Shoes To Wear in Dubai

As a general packing rule, for both men and women, bring a pair of shoes that you can walk around the city and malls in, an athletic pair for the desert, flip-flops or sandals for the beach, and a pair that you can wear to a semi-formal or formal dinner, club, bar, or opera (heels for women and closed shoes that aren’t sneakers for men).

How To Dress in Dubai in Ramadan

This is one question I get asked a lot (how to dress in Dubai during Ramadan) and contrary to the popular ‘wear what you want’ advice that’s frequently dished out, I’m going to say just the opposite:

Please don’t wear what you want, please do cover up- it shows respect for what is a very holy time for all the Muslims who are fasting in the country.

While I do wear short dresses and skirts while going out to dinner or bars during the rest of the year, I pay special attention to my wardrobe during Ramadan.

Out come the longer maxi and midi dresses, nice tops with trousers and jeans , and the bare shoulders or bare backs are covered up with a blazer or jacket. Plunging necklines and thigh-grazing shorts with crop tops are faux pas during Ramadan.

What To Wear in Dubai: The Ultimate Dubai Packing List tells you how to pack for Dubai, whether it’s a desert safari, shopping mall, mosque, beach, or nightclub in Dubai you’re going to. My tips are from the perspective of a Dubai born and raised expat along with style tips for both men and women to help you gain cultural context when you pack for Dubai.

Top / Sandals / Wide-leg pants / Maxi dress / Scarf / Bag

Bear in mind that going out during the evening in Ramadan means you’ll be in the company of iftar (the meal where the fast is broken at sunset) attendees at dining venues or night markets or malls- people who have been fasting and praying through the day before breaking the fast at sunset. So dress modestly (but not sloppily) to be respectful. Here’s a guide to Ramadan in Dubai , if you’re interested.

It follows then that if you’re invited to someone’s home for iftar , show up on time and dressed modestly with your shoulders and knees covered. Women can wear a maxi dress with sleeves, or a top or shirt with a long skirt, pants or jeans that aren’t ripped . Men can wear a shirt or collared t-shirt with jeans or trousers (no shorts or ripped jeans).

Do You Need Winter Clothes in Dubai?

Winter in Dubai lasts from November to March, but our winter is nothing like what you might be used to back home. Down jackets, parkas and fur coats have no use in Dubai. You can read my guide to the best time to visit Dubai to help you understand the weather.

Our winter is much milder- with temperatures ranging from 17 degrees celsius on colder days to mid-20s on other days. Light sweaters, mid-weight jackets, leather jackets, light shawls, scarves, sweatshirts, hoodies, and cardigans work well in winter in Dubai.

Some Dubai winter outfit ideas are warm ribbed dresses, long-sleeved dresses with tights, turtlenecks, hoodies and pull-overs, leather-look tights, biker leather jackets, light denim jackets, and sparkly sweaters.  You won’t need gloves and hats, unless you’re visiting the mountains around the UAE and Oman in winter.

Can you wear boots in Dubai?

Yes, you can wear boots in Dubai, just don’t bring your warmest ones. In fact, though it doesn’t get terribly cold in Dubai, us Dubai residents love to bring out our boots between November and February because nothing says winter fashion like boots and you know, we LOVE fashion!

What To Wear in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the Rest of the UAE

Dubai is certainly the most liberal of the seven emirates that make up the UAE. In other emirates like the capital Abu Dhabi, culture-rich Sharjah, adventure capital Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah with its beautiful coastline, you will need to dress much more modestly, failing which you will be denied entry to tourist sights, museums, restaurants, and public places.

  • In these cities, ensure that your clothing does not reveal your shoulders, knees, cleavage, back, or midriff.
  • Do not wear clothing that is too tight or any degree of transparent. This is something to remember if you find yourself going on a day trip from Dubai to see the museums in Sharjah , or visit the garden city of Al Ain in Abu Dhabi , or visit local villages in Wadi Shees .
  • You can still wear swimwear in these emirates but only on hotel beaches and in hotel pools- not even on all public beaches.
  • In these emirates, even at a fancy hotel, staff will ask you to cover up if you try to enter a restaurant in a dress that’s too short or revealing- so it’s best to stick to a modest wardrobe for the rest of the UAE.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Dubai Dress Code

Do tourists have to wear traditional dress.

Dubai is a fashionable, modern, and cosmopolitan city where a majority of the population is made up of expats from all over the world. Tolerance is one of the pillars of Emirati society and culture and no, you do not have to wear the traditional dress . Women don’t have to cover their heads with a headscarf in Dubai either.

Do you have to cover your head in Dubai? Do women have to wear a headscarf in Dubai?

No, neither women nor men need to cover their head in Dubai. Women do not need to wear a headscarf in Dubai and are free to show their hair and leave it down.

What can women wear in Dubai?

Women can wear shirts, tops, t-shirts, skirts, shorts, trousers, jeans, and dresses in Dubai. Women can wear swimsuits and bikinis on the beaches. They can also wear the traditional dress of their country or culture, such as saree or salwar kameez, as long as it is modest.

What is the UAE Traditional Dress in Dubai?

If you’ve seen photos, you might already know that the UAE traditional dresses of robes for both men and women are beautiful. The black robe for women is called the abaya and the white one for men is called the kandora .

Women’s abayas will often have ornate designs and embroidery on them, and modern high-fashion versions will have creative motifs on them. The headscarf worn by local women in the UAE is called shayla-  it covers the head and shoulders but the face is usually not covered.

A local family in traditional dress in Dubai/ What To Wear in Dubai: The Ultimate Dubai Packing List tells you how to pack for Dubai, whether it’s a desert safari, shopping mall, mosque, beach, or nightclub in Dubai you’re going to. My tips are from the perspective of a Dubai born and raised expat along with style tips for both men and women to help you gain cultural context when you pack for Dubai.

Do not confuse a shayla  with a  burqa (which usually covers the entire face and has a thin mesh layer for the eyes) or a  niqab  (a veil for the face which leaves the eyes open).

Some women, usually older, might wear a niqab or burqa, but a vast majority of Emirati women wear a shayla.

The locals wear this dress with pride and not because they’re forced to, because they’re not. Some Emiratis do not wear the local dress at all times and some do.

Can Tourists Wear the Local Dress in Dubai?

If you want to try wearing the local dress as a tourist, you’re allowed to. In fact, you might even find it is available to wear and take photos in local dress on a desert safari. If you want to buy the local Dubai dress, whether for men or women, the souks in old Dubai or the shops at the Souk Madinat Jumeirah are excellent places to buy them.

Do You Have to Dress Conservatively in Dubai?

That really depends on your personal definition of conservative dressing, doesn’t it? How conservatively you need to dress depends on where in Dubai you’re dressing for.

The dress code in shopping malls, public places like parks, cinema, retail districts, and on public transport like the metro and buses is much more modest than on the beach, or in bars or nightclubs or in restaurants located in hotels in new Dubai, where you can wear clothing that is much more revealing without offending anyone’s sensibilities. In old Dubai and on cultural tours, it’s wise to cover up and dress modestly.

It is wise to dress modestly in Dubai, when you aren’t sure of how to dress for a certain situation.

How Fashionable is Dubai?

I’ve traveled a fair bit and after spending long periods of time in other cities, I can safely say that Dubai is a very fashionable city , like London, Milan, and New York. Dubai loves dressing up and the city’s residents love showing off their brands (if they own them) and/or their creativity and individual sense of style.

When it comes to your packing list for Dubai, don’t feel like you have to play safe.

Denim Jacket / Cold-shoulder Top / Striped Dress / Sunglasses / Jeans / Sleeveless top / Oxford shoes

Dressing in Dubai, whether it’s going to work, or on casual weekends, or going out at night, people are generally smartly turned out- elegant, or edgy, or smart, or nerdy, or whatever their style is.

Of course, just like in every city, there are people who are more relaxed in their dressing but a majority of Dubai residents make the effort to look good and well put together when they leave home.

Can you wear a bikini in Dubai?

Of course, you can wear a bikini in Dubai but only on the beach, whether that’s a public beach or a hotel beach, or a hotel pool, but nowhere else. Not even on the promenade across from the beach with food stalls. To sit here, slip a kaftan or sundress over your bikini.

Are short dresses allowed in Dubai?

Yes, short dresses are allowed in Dubai but it depends on how short and where in Dubai you’ll be wearing a short dress. Dresses must be at least nearly knee-length to be worn in public places such as shopping malls, souks, parks, and the metro. But on the beach, in an international hotel, a fancy restaurant in new Dubai, or in a bar or nightclub, it’s acceptable if your dress ends anywhere from mid-thigh to above the knee.

Bear in mind that this is what is acceptable in Dubai- the rules are completely different in the other emirates that make up the UAE, such as Sharjah, Ajman, and Abu Dhabi, where you need to dress much more modestly, such as in full-length pants or skirts or maxi dresses. In these cities you will be denied entry to public places and restaurants if you’re not dressed modestly.

Can you wear ripped jeans in Dubai?

Yes, you can wear ripped jeans in Dubai, but use your judgement depending on how ripped your jeans are and which part of Dubai you’re dressing for. If they’re just minimally ripped, and don’t show too much skin especially above the knee, you can wear them to most public places. But I do not recommend wearing heavily ripped jeans to the mall or on public transport or the souks of old Dubai or the desert. It’s perfectly okay to wear them to bars, beach clubs and party brunches in hotels.

Absolutely do not wear ripped jeans that show any skin at all on a mosque visit, a walking tour, or to a cultural meal or experience in Al Fahidi or if you’re visiting a government office of some sort.

Can you wear shorts in Dubai?

Yes you can wear shorts in Dubai, even as a woman but use your judgement depending upon where in Dubai you want to wear them and how short they are. You can wear knee-length shorts in public places and malls or to a desert safari. I don’t recommend shorts to souks in old Dubai, museums, cultural tours or walking tours in various neighborhoods. You can wear shorts to the beach or pool and dressy shorts to bars and nightclubs.

Join my Dubai Travel Planning Group on Facebook for insider tips about cool restaurants, cafes, instagrammable spots, attractions and things to do in and around Dubai.

Can you wear a crop top in Dubai?

That really depends on the length of the crop top. Basically, no one will bat an eyelid at a beach, beach club, poolside, pool party, fancy restaurant, concert, nightclub, or bar. You can easily wear a regular crop top with high-waisted bottoms to a restaurant or mall if your outfit shows barely any skin, and carry a jacket or blazer if you’re not sure.

Do not wear a crop top to a mosque or cultural museum or souks and definitely do not show off your bare midriff or waist in these places.

Can you wear flip-flops in Dubai?

Yes, you can wear flip-flops in Dubai, but just don’t wear them to nice restaurants in international hotels, fancy bars, or nightclubs that specifically have a no-flip-flops policy (dress codes are always mentioned on their websites). If you’re visiting in summer, I totally get wanting to wear flip-flops or open sandals- and these are okay to wear on walking tours or in the souks, or even to the mall, and of course, they’re perfect for the beach.

Can you wear cold-shoulder tops or dresses in Dubai?

Yes, you can wear cold-shoulder tops or dresses in Dubai, but be sure to carry a light scarf or jacket to cover up if you’re wearing them to a souk or a shopping mall where the dress code requires you to cover your shoulders.

Are There Clothing Restrictions in Dubai?

I don’t think of the dressing rules in Dubai as clothing restrictions- to me, they are guidelines to help foreign tourists and residents who might lack the cultural nuance to know what attire is appropriate in Dubai in different situations. It’s not like you’re not allowed to express your creativity or personality through your clothing. Like bright colors and neons? Wear them. Like bold prints and patterns together, wear them.

But when it comes to showing skin, these rules and guidelines take the second-guessing out of the situation and help develop cultural sensitivity. If you’re ever dressing to go out in Dubai and are not sure if your attire is appropriate, err on the side of modesty.

This next section spells out the types of clothing that are frowned upon in Dubai.

What Not To Wear in Dubai

  • Both men and women must not wear clothing or accessories in Dubai, or the rest of the UAE, that display obscene or offensive pictures, words, and slogans.
  • Steer clear of clothing or accessories with swear words, insults, or any profanities- these are not welcome in Dubai and strict action might be taken against someone wearing them.
  • Don’t wear clothing that contains slogans or pictures that disrespect or defame any religion or country or nationality or even person.
  • Definitely don’t wear anything that displays religious symbols, icons, signs, texts, or the likeness of gods or goddesses from any religion.
  • As a general rule, too much cleavage is frowned upon, so no plunging necklines in public places.
  • When it comes to wearing shorts in Dubai, even by tourists, use this as a quick guide- Thigh grazing shorts, booty shorts, hot shorts, and mini-skirts that barely cover the bum, they’re not a good choice in Dubai, unless you’re wearing them at the beach.
  • Off-shoulder tops in Dubai are okay in some, not all places. I personally would not wear an off-shoulder top in a crowded souk in old Dubai or Deira, or in a shopping mall (where the AC makes it quite cold)- but I’d be okay wearing it to brunch or a party or to the beach.
  • Sheer tops and dresses where some or all of your lingerie is visible is also inappropriate (except at a club or bar).
  • Of course you can wear leggings in Dubai- at the airport or the gym or to the supermarket or wherever. But transparent leggings with short tops are a real eyesore; no one in Dubai wants to see your polka dotted underwear through your thin leggings, so please, just don’t. You can of course wear them with long tops, shirts or dresses that cover your bum.
  • Avoid super low-waist jeans that bare your bum and more when you sit.
  • Crop tops are okay if you wear them with high-waisted bottoms, and don’t bare your midriff except at beaches or nightclubs.
  • Leave the Brazilian bikini thongs at home or wear them at hotel pools only.

It’s perfectly okay to wear sleeveless or short-sleeved tops and dresses, and it’s also okay to wear fitted clothes. Knee-length dresses and shorts that are a bit above the knee are also okay, except in places where there might be a dress code to cover the knees and shoulders.

  • Men can wear vests and shorts but keep the short shorts for the beach.
  • You can wear shorts with smart collared and other t-shirts or shirts elsewhere, as long as you don’t look sloppy. Many restaurants, bars, and clubs have a no shorts or sneakers policy for men.
  • Men absolutely should not be shirtless or bare-chested- that is acceptable only at the beach or pool.

How to Dress in Dubai By Month

Summer in Dubai lasts from May to September, with June, July, and August being the hottest months of the year in Dubai. You can expect temperatures in the high 40s (degrees celsius) and some days with humidity as high as 80-90%.

The weather begins to cool down from mid-September and is pleasant until March, slowly beginning to warm up in April. January and February are now the coolest months in Dubai, perfect to explore the outdoors in the UAE on easy day trips from Dubai , such as to Wadi Shees , Hatta, or Al Ain .

Here’s a guide to dressing right for the weather in Dubai, depending upon the month you plan to visit Dubai in. You can also read my post about the best time to visit Dubai .

What To Wear in Dubai in January

January is the coolest month in Dubai with some days colder than others. You can still wear dresses, skirts, and shorts, but pack a light to medium weight jacket or cardigan for when it gets chilly in the evening.

If you want to wear fall or winter clothing in Dubai such as boots, turtlenecks, knitted dresses or tops, or leather jackets and pants, this is the time of year to do it.

If you plan on taking day trips from Dubai , especially to the mountains in Hatta or Ras Al Khaimah, then pack a pullover or warm hoodie and some warm socks.

Average temperatures: 14°C (57.2°F) to 24°C (75.2°F)

What To Wear in Dubai in February

Weather wise, February is not too different from January. Pack a warm pullover, and maybe a dressy jacket or blazer to jazz up an outfit in the evenings.

Bring closed shoes- it might be too chilly for sandals or flip-flops in the evenings.

Average temperatures: 16°C (60.8°F) to 25°C (77°F)

What To Wear in Dubai in March

Temperatures are quite pleasant in March- perfect for sundresses, t-shirts or shirts and jeans, and perhaps even shorts in the afternoons. You might occasionally want a light cardigan, especially if you’re strolling on a waterfront promenade in the evenings.

Average temperatures: 18°C (64.4°F) to 29°C (84.2°F)

What To Wear in Dubai in April

The afternoons are much warmer than January, and you’ll want clothing that is light, comfortable, and not too thick. You’ll rarely need a jacket outdoors in April, but will need one indoors in shopping malls. Dresses, skirts and even jeans are still comfortable to wear in Dubai in April.

Average temperatures: 21°C (69.8°F) to 33°C ( 91.4°F)

In 2021, Ramadan in Dubai begins in April- be sure to dress modestly in Dubai during this holy time of year.

What To Wear in Dubai in May

In May, you can feel summer slowly but surely creeping up in Dubai. The seawater at the beaches is nice and warm in May but you do have to be careful about the time of day you decide to go to the beach. The peak afternoon heat from 12pm to 3pm isn’t exactly ideal.

If you’re visiting Dubai in May, pack light, airy fabrics and clothing like culottes, shorts, sundresses, midi skirts, and of course, don’t forget your swimwear.

Average temperatures: 25°C (77°F) to 38°C (100.4°F)

What To Wear in Dubai in June

In June, the summer heat can feel oppressive and you will most certainly want to wear a cap or hat if you plan to walk outdoors in the day. Wear light, loose clothing in fabrics that won’t cling to your skin and avoid that icky feeling on humid days. You’ll look for any excuse to take a dip in your hotel pool, so don’t forget your swimwear.

Average temperatures: 28°C (82.4°F) to 40°C (104°F)

What To Wear in Dubai in July

July begins to feel brutal in Dubai and by now, us Dubai residents have made routines that involve spending our days hopping from one air-conditioned spot such as the mall or gym or office or cafe to another. Wear light shirts, trousers, tops, culottes, midi skirts and sundresses. Bring out the shorts on warmer days and carry a light scarf with you in case you need to cover bare shoulders in some places.

Average temperatures: 30°C (86°F) to  41°C (105.8°F)

What To Wear in Dubai in August

Soothing, neutral colors that keep you cool, light airy materials that let your skin breathe, a hat to keep you cool and protect your head from the scorching sun, sunglasses and sunscreen should be top of your Dubai packing list in August. Pack dresses, skirts, palazzo pants, and tops that you’ll be comfortable in the peak of summer.

Men should pack colors and fabrics that will keep them feeling and looking cool.

Bring open sandals or flip-flops because there will be days when you will loathe the thought of putting on socks under your sneakers.

Average temperatures: 31°C (87.8°F) to 41°C (105.8°F)

What To Wear in Dubai in September

Spirits lift in Dubai slowly as the afternoons cool down, even if just a little bit. At least, you won’t be as sweaty outdoors anymore. You’ll pack much the same as August but it’s easy to wear jeans and sneakers again without feeling like your skin cannot breathe.

Average temperatures: 28°C (82.4°F) to 39°C (102.2°F)

What To Wear in Dubai in October

I guess this is our version of Fall- I don’t blame you if it’s more like summer where you come from. Pack shirts, t-shirts, trousers, jeans, and dresses, with a pair of shorts or two. You will need a very light jacket for the malls and for desert safari where it can get chilly in the evenings.

Average temperatures: 24°C (75.2°F) to 35°C (95°F)

What To Wear in Dubai in November

While it’s technically not that cold, leather jackets, boots, turtlenecks, sweaters, full-sleeved dresses, and baseball jackets are all fair game. After all, this is the only time of year us Dubai residents can flaunt our winter wardrobe, so why shouldn’t you?!

Average temperatures: 20°C (68°F) to 31°C (87.8°F)

What To Wear in Dubai in December

December is seriously festive in Dubai! Bring your shiny, sparkly, sequinned dresses and tops, your cute Christmas sweaters, your stylish pullovers and sporty hoodies- you will use most of them as you’ll be spending most of your time outdoors- whether it’s adventures, dining, shisha, or nightlife. And don’t forget the Christmas markets, concerts and December events- you’ll want to glam up to match the Dubai dressing style this time of year.

Average temperatures: 16°C ( 60.8°F) to 26°C (78.8°F)

Islam plays a significant role in shaping the local culture, including clothing norms. It's essential to recognize that the dress code is a reflection of cultural values and respect for local traditions.

General Dress Code Guidelines

For both men and women, modesty is key when clothing in Dubai. The dress code for women in Dubai should cover the shoulders, cleavage, and knees. While there is no strict enforcement, especially for tourists, adhering to these guidelines demonstrates respect for local customs. Loose-fitting and breathable fabrics are advisable, considering the warm climate.

  • Modest Clothing: Women are advised to wear clothing that covers the shoulders, cleavage, and knees. Long skirts, dresses, or trousers paired with a modest top are generally appropriate.
  • Headscarf (optional): While not mandatory for non-Muslim women, wearing a headscarf can be a sign of cultural sensitivity, especially in more traditional areas.

  • Shopping Malls: Dubai's malls are known for their luxury shopping experiences. While casual wear is generally acceptable, it's advisable to dress neatly and avoid overly revealing clothing.
  • Religious Sites: When visiting mosques or religious sites, both men and women should dress more conservatively. The dress code for women in Dubai may be required to cover their hair, and all visitors are expected to remove their shoes before entering.

Dubai clothing rules are not only a matter of tradition but also a way of showing consideration for the values of the local community. While Dubai is known for its tolerance and openness, visitors and residents alike should be aware of the impact their attire can have on the cultural landscape.

Understanding the Dubai Tourist Dress Code

Dubai tourist dress code.

Dubai, a mesmerizing gem in the heart of the United Arab Emirates, beckons travelers from around the globe with its towering skyscrapers, pristine beaches, and vibrant cultural scene. Yet, amidst the dazzle and allure of this cosmopolitan city, one must tread with awareness of its distinct cultural norms, particularly when it comes to attire. In this guide, we delve into the nuances of the Dubai tourist dress code to ensure your visit is not only memorable but respectful of local customs.

Dubai tourist dress code

Cultural Context of Dubai

To truly appreciate the importance of adhering to the dress code in Dubai, one must understand the cultural fabric that weaves through the city. Embracing Islamic traditions and values, Dubai places great emphasis on modesty and respect in attire. This stems from the core principles of Islamic culture, where clothing serves as a reflection of one’s faith and societal norms.

In Dubai , modesty isn’t just a fashion statement; it’s a way of life. For both men and women, dressing conservatively demonstrates reverence for local customs and fosters harmony within the community.

For instance, during the holy month of Ramadan, Dubai residents and visitors alike observe fasting from dawn till dusk, reflecting the values of patience, empathy, and self-discipline. In alignment with the spirit of Ramadan, adhering to modest dress code guidelines becomes even more significant, symbolizing respect for the solemnity of the occasion.

Dress Code Guidelines for Tourists

As a visitor in Dubai, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the general guidelines for tourist dress code . While the city is known for its modernity, certain expectations still apply, especially in public spaces, malls, and religious sites.

Women are encouraged to dress modestly, opting for loose-fitting clothing that covers the shoulders, knees, and midriff. While the traditional black Abaya is not mandatory for non-Muslim visitors, it is respectful to consider wearing one when visiting mosques or conservative areas.

  • Modest Clothing : Women should opt for modest clothing that covers the shoulders, knees, and cleavage. Loose-fitting, long-sleeved tops and long skirts or trousers are suitable choices.
  • Swimwear : While bikinis and swimsuits are acceptable at hotel pools and beaches, it’s respectful to cover up with a sarong or cover-up when leaving these areas.
  • Mosques and Religious Sites : Women are required to wear loose-fitting, ankle-length clothing and cover their heads with a scarf when entering mosques or religious sites. Some mosques may provide robes for visitors.
  • Nightlife : In bars, clubs, and restaurants, women can dress more freely, but it’s still advisable to avoid overly revealing or provocative clothing.

For example, when exploring the iconic Jumeirah Mosque, one of the few mosques in Dubai open to non-Muslim visitors, women are provided with complimentary Abayas to ensure modesty and cultural sensitivity during their visit. This gesture underscores the importance of respecting local customs and traditions while fostering intercultural understanding.

Men are expected to dress smartly and conservatively, avoiding overly casual attire such as shorts and sleeveless shirts in public places. Traditional Emirati dress, such as the Kandura, is widely accepted and can be worn as a gesture of respect for local customs.

  • Casual Wear : Tourists can generally wear casual clothing such as t-shirts, shorts, and jeans in most tourist areas and shopping malls.
  • Beachwear : At beaches and pools, swimwear is acceptable. However, it’s advisable to cover up when moving away from the beach or pool areas.
  • Mosques and Religious Sites : If visiting mosques or religious sites, men should wear long trousers and avoid sleeveless shirts. It’s also customary to cover the head with a scarf or hat.
  • Evening Wear : For evening outings, smart casual attire is appropriate, such as collared shirts and trousers. Some upscale restaurants and clubs may have a stricter dress code requiring long pants and closed-toe shoes.

When attending formal events or business meetings in Dubai, men often don the Kandura, symbolizing elegance and cultural pride. This traditional attire not only reflects Emirati heritage but also serves as a unifying symbol of identity and tradition in a rapidly evolving cosmopolitan landscape.

Traditional Dress in Dubai

Embracing the traditional attire of Dubai not only showcases respect for local culture but also offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the rich tapestry of Emirati heritage.

The quintessential Emirati attire for men comprises the Kandura, a flowing white robe, complemented by the Ghutra (headscarf) and Egal (black cord) ā€“ a symbol of elegance and grace.

Women in Dubai often don the elegant Abaya, a loose-fitting black robe, paired with the Shayla (headscarf) or Niqab for added modesty. While non-Muslim women are not obligated to wear the Abaya, it is recommended to dress modestly out of respect for local customs.

Practical Tips for Tourists

Navigating the Dubai tourist dress code can be a breeze with a few simple tips:

  • Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics to stay cool in the desert heat.
  • Pack versatile pieces that can transition seamlessly from day to night.
  • When in doubt, err on the side of modesty and conservatism to avoid inadvertently causing offense.

For instance, when planning a day of exploration in Old Dubai, where traditional markets (souks) and historic landmarks abound, opting for comfortable yet modest attire ensures a seamless blend of cultural immersion and respectful engagement with local communities.

Navigating Dress Code Expectations in Different Settings

Dubai’s dress code expectations may vary depending on the setting. While casual attire is acceptable in many modern establishments, it’s crucial to be mindful of the cultural context, especially when visiting religious sites or attending formal events.

For example, when attending a cultural festival or Emirati wedding celebration, embracing traditional attire not only honors the occasion but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect among participants.

General Considerations:

  • Respect for Local Customs : Tourists should always respect local customs and sensitivities when it comes to clothing choices.
  • Hot Weather Considerations : While it can get extremely hot in Dubai, especially during the summer months, lightweight and breathable fabrics are recommended to stay cool while adhering to modesty guidelines.
  • Public Behavior : In addition to dress code guidelines, tourists should also be mindful of their behavior in public places, refraining from public displays of affection and adhering to local laws and customs.

Addressing Common Misconceptions

Misconceptions surrounding the Dubai tourist dress code are not uncommon, but understanding the rationale behind these guidelines can help dispel any confusion. By embracing cultural sensitivity and respect, visitors can forge meaningful connections with the local community and gain a deeper appreciation for the traditions that shape Dubai’s identity.

Cultural Sensitivity and Respect

At its core, adhering to the Dubai tourist dress code is about more than just following rules ā€“ it’s about showing respect for the values and beliefs of the Emirati people. By embracing cultural sensitivity, travelers can enrich their experiences and create lasting memories that transcend borders and boundaries.

Dubai tourist dress code

In the kaleidoscope of global travel, Dubai stands as a beacon of cultural diversity and harmony. By embracing the nuances of the Dubai tourist dress code , visitors can embark on a journey of discovery that transcends mere sightseeing, offering a glimpse into the soul of this dynamic city. So, as you pack your bags and prepare for adventure, remember: in Dubai, modesty is not just a guideline ā€“ it’s a testament to the timeless values that unite us all.

Dubai Dress Code: How Should I Dress in the UAE?

One of the most common questions for those coming to the UAE for the first time is: what is the Dubai Dress Code? On the web there are many answers, rather confused and sometimes discordant with each other.

Thatā€™s why I thought this short and simple guide, with the best tips from those who live in Dubai on how to dress in the UAE , could be useful for you!

Dubai Dress Code: What Should I Know Before Going?

The UAE is generally a much more open-minded and less conservative country than other countries in the Middle East , which means that there is usually a greater habit and tolerance towards tourists.

As such, youā€™ll see a wide variety of behaviors, from top models in bikinis on Jumeirah Beach to (of course) locals dressed in traditional clothing.

Personally I believe in traveling in an ethical and responsible way. I hate seeing people who have no respect for the places they visit.

The world is beautiful because it is full of different cultures , which is also why it is important to respect the local people , their customs and their laws.

The Dubai Dress Code is really very simple , just a few rules to keep in mind:

  • Dressing respectfully does not mean you have to wear traditional Arab clothes, you can dress your favorite clothes without any problems;
  • For women, it is best to wear clothes that cover at least the knees and shoulders. For men, a pair of Bermuda shorts may be fine. The t-shirts are ok too!
  • Avoid wearing too tight or sheer clothing and avoid showing midriffs and cleavage;
  • Avoid wearing t-shirts with writing or drawings that can be offensive;

Thatā€™s all! Easier done than said!

In any case, if someone asks you to cover up, just do it! Avoid protesting!

It is also good to keep in mind that the UAE is a union of 7 emirates , which often have different laws and customs .

Dubai is the most cosmopolitan emirate , and therefore more tolerant of Western manners of dress. Quite similar is the emirate of Abu Dhabi .

In the other emirates it is good to show more respect in the ways of dressing, because the locals are less used to tourists.

Ajman today is getting quite touristy, in its beautiful resorts you can feel free to dress in shorts, and to put on your favorite swimsuit on the beach. But not in public places, where it is good to dress respectfully, so with your knees and shoulders covered.

Umm Al Quwain is one of the less touristy emirates, so please dress appropriately.

Despite its proximity to Dubai and being quite touristy, Sharjah is famous for being the most conservative emirate. So here too, itā€™s best to dress appropriately: covered knees and shoulders, no sheer dresses, no cleavages, no tight-fitting clothes. Obviously, no offensive or allusive designs or writings on your t-shirts!

How do locals dress in Dubai?

In Dubai, and in most of the UAE, locals dress modestly and rather similarly to the rest of Arab countries. This is due both to local customs, respect for Islamic traditions, and protection against high temperatures and the strong desert sun.

UAE Traditional Dress for MEN

Many men wear the traditional dress, called kandura (also referred to as a thobe or dishdasha ). The white one is very common (it is the best against the sunā€™s rays), but there are many colors.

Furthermore, men typically wear ghutra , the traditional headdress. It originally had a dual purpose, to protect from the desert sun and sandstorms. The traditional ghutra of the UAE is white, but today the white and red textured one is also quite used. The ghutra is held in place by a black rope that wraps around the head, which is called agal .

It is also quite common to see men wearing trousers and t-shirts, this is largely due to the multiculturalism of the UAE (and especially Dubai), where people from many different countries live.

UAE Traditional Dress for WOMEN

Women usually wear the traditional dress, called abaya . Actually the abaya is not really a dress. Instead it is more of a thin cloak, which covers the body and protects from the heat and strong desert sun.

Under the abaya , women wear their favorite clothes (often similar to Western ones, such as jeans). The traditional color is black, but the choice of decorations is often quite large.

The women also wear the traditional hijab , the veil worn by Muslim women, which covers their hair, ears and neck. One of the most popular styles in the UAE is shayla , which is a cross between a hijab and a niqab , the veil that covers the face leaving only the eyes exposed.

Other types of clothing (such as the burqa ) are quite uncommon. While it is interesting to know that a type of metal face mask, called, burqua , belongs to the Gulf tradition. It is really rare to see a woman wearing it, because this belongs to the customs of the older generation and is not in use among the young.

Can a tourist wear the traditional UAE dress?

You can go and see (and if you want, also buy) the wide selection of traditional clothes in the workshops of the Dubai Textile Souk . It is not considered offensive if a Western woman decides to wear it (with respect). In fact, many people buy it before going on a desert safari , and then take some great photos.

It is rather strange to see a Western man in traditional dress, but if worn correctly and modestly, there is no problem.

Dubai Dress Code: How to Dress in Dubai

How should a woman dress in Dubai?

As said before, just follow a few rules : donā€™t show too much skin, in particular it is better to cover shoulders and knees.

In the resorts the attitude is much more relaxed , as well as during desert tours (where you will be mainly with other tourists, and with locals used to working with tourists).

In most public places it is required to dress appropriately (for example, in shopping malls), while only in places of prayer (for example when you visit the Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai , or the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi ) are women required to cover the head and to wear clothes that cover the legs and arms.

My advice is to bring (or buy in the souks) something like a shawl or a pashmina, it will also be useful to protect you from the sunā€™s rays, which can be very strong especially in summer.

How should a man dress in Dubai?

In reality, the rules for men are not very different from those for women. So the main advice is to dress in a modest, classic, conservative way.

T-shirts and Bermuda shorts are fine , as long as they do not have drawings or writings that are contrary to morality or offensive.

Most locals (including expats) prefer to wear full-length trousers . My advice is to do like them, perhaps choosing jeans for your city tours and something more comfortable and loose fitting for your desert safaris.

If you are in Dubai (or Abu Dhabi, or any other city in the UAE) on a business trip, it is best that you know that in local companies it is rather considered appropriate to dress well , so it is better to dress formal or business casual at depending on the occasion.

How to dress on the beach in the UAE?

Just take a look at the world famous Jumeirah Beach to realize how people behave very differently and how confusing and unclear the situation is.

Letā€™s make it clear what are the things not to do:

  • Nudity is strictly prohibited
  • Topless is strictly prohibited

And now, letā€™s see what are the tips that guarantee you can sunbathe and swim in peace:

  • In the resorts the rules are pretty relaxed , you can wear the swimsuit of your choice. When you leave the beach or the pool, however, you should cover yourself, as it is not allowed to stay in a bathing suit in public areas of hotels or restaurants
  • Even in the beach clubs you can feel free to wear what you prefer, the bikini is allowed and worn by the majority of girls (these places are mainly frequented by tourists and foreigners)
  • On public beaches , it is best to wear a one-piece swimsuit, and shorts are preferred for men.
  • Pay attention to the family areas , marked as ā€œFamily Beachā€ , reserved for women and families. Here women are required to be fully covered.
  • If someone asks you to cover up, do it! Protesting can easily end in police intervention. And this is not good!

Dubai’s year-round sunny weather makes it a popular tourist destination, but the heat and cultural expectations around modest attire can make packing tricky. As first-time visitors to Dubai , we were unsure about what to wear during our trip to avoid breaking any cultural dress code rules unintentionally.

After spending a few days exploring this glamorous desert city filled with luxury malls, vibrant nightlife, and stunning beaches, we want to provide you with tips to help you pack weather-appropriate, but more than that, respectful outfits for every season and occasion in Dubai.

What to pack for Dubai in short

Dubai’s climate and weather patterns.

Dubai has a hot, sunny climate all year round. The weather is generally warm even during the winter months of December to February, with daytime temperatures averaging 73-77Ā°F (23-25Ā°C).

Summer lasts from April to October, with temperatures frequently rising over 100Ā°F (38Ā°C) in the afternoon . The weather is very dry since Dubai is a desert city.

Humidity levels tend to be higher between October and April, making these months feel hotter than the actual temperature. As Dubai has an arid climate, rain showers are infrequent and generally happen only between December and March.

General Dress Code and Cultural Sensitivities

While Dubai has a reputation for extravagance and luxury living, the United Arab Emirates’ cultural values and norms still tend to be on the conservative side.

When we visited Dubai, it was on the way back from our big Southeast Asia trip, and so we were just with backpacks and not many long-sleeve or sweatpants available; we had to be creative and purchase some pieces in Dubai and Abu Dhabi .

While exploring both cities (Abu Dhabi more than Dubai), you should try your best to dress modestly when visiting mosques, religious sites, and old heritage areas in Dubai.

Some important general guidelines include:

  • Avoid revealing or tight clothing
  • Dress conservatively by covering your shoulders, chest, and knees
  • Wear non-transparent, loose fabrics
  • Carry a scarf or shawl to cover your head when entering religious places

Also, keep in mind that swimwear is strictly limited to hotel pools and beaches. Bikinis or skimpy swimsuits are fine on private hotel beaches but should not be worn publicly elsewhere in Dubai.

Arabian Desert Safari in Dubai - Is Dubai worth visiting

What does it mean to dress modestly in Dubai ?

While Dubai is considered one of the most liberal cities in the Gulf region , it still expects all visitors to dress modestly when out in public. Showing too much skin, especially shoulders, midriffs and legs, can be considered offensive.

As tourists, we should pack loose, lightweight clothing that covers our shoulders, chest, and knees. Flowy tops, breathable fabrics, and linen help beat the heat while meeting local modesty expectations. Closed-toe shoes are highly recommended for both men and women to respect places of worship.

Dress code at Dubai Hotels restaurants and malls

Most hotels, restaurants, and malls require modest attire – shoulders and knees should be covered. Avoid swimwear and revealing clothes. Fancier venues require smart casual or formalwear.

What to wear on Dubai Desert Safari

On desert safaris, lightweight cotton/linen pants, tops with sleeves, closed-toe shoes, hats, scarves, and layers for cool nights will keep sand out and protect you from the elements.

What to wear for women travelling to Dubai alone

Women travelling solo should pack loose, modest tops with sleeves and knee-length skirts/pants. They should also bring pashminas and cardigans to cover up when needed. Shoes should be flats or wedges under 2 inches.

What not to wear in Dubai

Avoid anything too tight, sheer, revealing, sleeveless, short, or transparent in public areas. Bikinis, mini skirts, very short shorts, and tank tops are unsuitable.

What to wear in public places in Dubai

In public places, dress modestly by covering shoulders, chests, and knees. Fabrics shouldn’t be transparent. Longer shorts, capris and fitted tops offer breathability while respecting norms.

What shoes wear in Dubai

Closed-toe, breathable sneakers are ideal for extensive walking. Bring modest sandals with minimal straps for the pool or beach and low wedges or heels under 2 inches for evenings out.

How to dress in Dubai in Ramadan

During Ramadan, tourists should take extra care to dress even more conservatively – avoid sleeveless tops, shorter hemlines, or anything tight/sheer to respect this religious period.

Can you wear shorts in Dubai?

Yes, you can wear shorts in Dubai, and this is valid for both men and women. On a couple of occasions, when the day was too hot, Alessia wore shorts, and it was fine, with no problems at all and no people staring at her. However, it would be great if you wear shorts that are knee-length or more.

Can I wear crop tops in Dubai?

Yes, you can, but donā€™t complain if you get people staring at you. Dubai is still conservative, and while it is more open, you should still play on the safe side. Avoid short mini-skirts, crop tops, or dresses that show too much. Cover your underwear and keep a modest dress code while in public.

Can you wear a bikini on Dubai beaches?

Yes. Dubai is very open, and while you will see locals wearing traditional swimsuits, you can wear a bikini. It’s better if you wear your two pieces in a resort or hotel area, where there are fewer locals, who might be more conservative.

Local Laws on Clothing

Avoid wearing anything too tight, sheer, low-cut, or transparent in public areas. Cover your cleavage, stomach, and back. Swimwear is only allowed at beaches and pools.

Dubai also prohibits dressing indecently, which includes wearing clothing with offensive language/images. Be respectful of cultural norms to avoid fines or legal troubles that could ruin your travel plans.

Why there is a dress code in Dubai

Dubai has a conservative culture rooted in Islam, which expects visitors to dress and behave modestly in public out of respect. Revealing clothing is frowned upon.

What locals wear in Dubai

Locals in Dubai tend to wear traditional modest attire, with men in kanduras and women in abayas. Western clothing is also common, but it is still relatively conservative.

During Dubai’s short winter season, daytime temperatures average a pleasant 75Ā°F (24Ā°C). The weather can feel humid and cool in the evenings, especially around January.

We recommend wearing light layers like jeans, pants, long-sleeve shirts, jackets or sweaters, and open footwear like sandals. This versatile outfit combination allows you to sightsee outdoors comfortably during the day while keeping warm for winter nights.

Carry an umbrella, as winter sees occasional rain showers. If you plan extensive outdoor activities, consider wearing waterproof shoes or rain jackets.

Spring (March to May)

As temperatures rise from March onwards, spring is a comfortable season to visit Dubai. The average daytime temperature is around 84Ā°F (29Ā°C).

Light, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are ideal for spring sightseeing. Loose, lightweight pants, short-sleeved shirts, sleeveless dresses, skirts, and shorts that end just above the knee are versatile options.

Bring hats and sunglasses to protect against the increasingly intense sunlight. Slippers, sandals or closed walking shoes are fine for outdoor wear. Just remember to apply sunscreen if you plan on extensive daytime activities!

Summer (June to September)

The summer heat intensifies in Dubai starting in in June, with temperatures crossing 104Ā°F (40Ā°C) on most days. However, malls and attractions have central air-conditioning, where visitors can take refuge from the outdoor heat.

Lightweight, light-coloured summer clothes will help you stay cool while sightseeing. Breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are good choices. You can wear dresses, skirts, shorts, short-sleeved shirts, sleeveless blouses, and summer pants . Just take care not to wear revealing clothing.

Hats and UV protection sunglasses are essential for blocking the harsh sunlight during summer. Sandals work well, but carry foldable ballet flats or slip-on shoes in your bag to easily slip into before entering mosques or restaurants.

Autumn (October to November)

Autumn brings daytime temperatures of around 95Ā°F (35Ā°C) along with moderately high humidity. The evenings start to get slightly cooler and more comfortable.

Transition your wardrobe towards long pants, jeans, closed shoes, sleeveless dresses, long-sleeve shirts, and lightweight cardigans or sweaters for cooler nights. This will allow you to stay cool while sightseeing during the day and keep you warm in case of air conditioning.

Don’t forget hats, sunglasses and sun protection even during the ‘cooler’ autumn months in Dubai!

Dressing Tips for Women

As a female tourist, dressing modestly is key in Dubai. Avoid anything too tight, sheer or revealing.

Tops: Opt for loose, flowy tops that cover your shoulders and chest. Materials like linen, cotton and chiffon work great. Bring some long-sleeve options, too, for indoor A/C. Wear a scarf or shawl when needed.

Bottoms: Loose-fitting pants, jeans, linen trousers, and knee-length skirts are safe bets. Leggings should be worn under dresses or tunics, not alone. Shorts are OK at hotels and beaches if they cover to mid-thigh.

Dresses & Jumpsuits: Modest maxi dresses, knee-length shift dresses, and loose jumpsuits make packing easy. Just bring a few and reuse them by switching up accessories.

Shoes: Flats, sandals, wedges, or closed-toe heels under 2 inches are comfortable and respectful shoe options.

Swimwear: Modest tankinis, one-piece swimsuits, or swim shorts with rash guard tops. Cover up with wraps when walking to/from beaches/pools.

Accessories: Bring pashminas, wraps, wide-brim hats, and sunglasses to complete outfits.

What Men Should Wear in Dubai

Men can wear shorts and short-sleeved shirts in Dubai but should still meet modesty standards. Avoid sleeveless tanks and very short shorts.

Shirts: Breathable shirts and long-sleeved button-downs, polos, and linen shirts.

Pants: Lightweight trousers, jeans, and chinos are versatile options in cotton or linen blends.

Shorts: At mid-thigh length or longer for public wear. Allowed at hotels, pools, and beaches.

Footwear: Bring sturdy walking shoes, sandals, and loafers for outdoor adventures and sightseeing.

Swimwear: Board shorts to the knee rather than Speedo-style suits.

Light layers: Cotton cardigans and blazers for cooler nights. Scarves too.

Choose versatile pieces and colours/patterns that mix and match well for endless outfits suitable for Dubai’s modest dress code. Based on cultural norms and laws, both women and men should cover their shoulders, chests, and stomachs and avoid anything too tight or revealing.

Key Takeaways – What to Wear in Dubai

Dubai’s sunny weather, beaches, and luxury vibes can tempt tourists to wear revealing swimming costumes and summery clothes seen in Western beach destinations.

However, dressing modestly by covering your shoulders and knees and avoiding transparent fabrics will allow you to respect local cultural values while enjoying Dubai’s attractions.

Light, breathable fabrics are best for Dubai’s year-round heat. Bring sun protection like hats and sunglasses too! While swimwear is fine at beaches and hotel pools, cover up with a dress, sarong or shawl when going out elsewhere. Carry a headscarf or shawl to enter mosques and religious sites respectfully.

We hope these Dubai dress code tips help you plan suitable, weather-appropriate outfits that also respect cultural values! Let us know in the comments if you have any other questions about what to wear during your upcoming Dubai holiday.

What to Wear During a Desert Safari in Dubai

Desert safari is high in the list of places to visit of tourists to Dubai. This experience of a lifetime is unlike the architectural masterpieces, theme parks, shopping malls and souks, and more in the Emirate. Many people who have experienced the safari describe it as extraordinary. Many have also said that while they enjoyed the trip they were unable to take part in a few activities. They cite the reason as improper clothing. Dressing up properly for a desert safari needs some consideration and advice from people whoā€™ve experienced it. If you are planning on a Dubai desert safari get to know the right dress code so that you donā€™t have to regret later.

An intro on clothing for Tourists going on a desert safari

Comfortable wear at Dubai Desert Safari

Tourists to Dubai will have other tourists for a company and so modest clothing isnā€™t mandatory. Those going on a Desert Safari are free to wear anything they are comfortable in. However, women must cover their shoulders and knees.

The afternoons are intensely sunny while the early hours of the morning and evenings can get very cold. So visitors must put on clothes that are breathable and practical in hot and cold weather and abundant dust. Loose clothes are recommended for being comfortable while doing sand skiing and other rides.

The desert heat stays while the sun is up. Visitors on an evening and overnight safari must carry a light jacket .

Below is a brief on an outfit for Dubai desert safari for both the gender.

Personal wear for a Dubai desert safari

Ladies and men are advised to put on Loose-fitting comfy trousers or jeans. Linen and cotton will make them comfortable and cool. They are excellent for an early morning desert safari . A hoodie would also suit morning and evening safaris that continue into the night.

Men may opt for cotton pants or shorts. Shorts are standard summer wear for hot afternoons. However, a short is not the best for a desert safari.

  • The reason is that tourists will be mostly seated in an AC jeep. Thus, shorts could be uncomfortable.
  • Those who opt for a sand activity such as sand-boarding or dune bashing could gather sand in uncomfortable places. Moreover, having a camel ride in desert safari wearing shorts is not very comfortable.

Trousers are a better bet. However, the zip-off trousers that get converted to shorts are okay.

Ladies can put on pants and T-shirts or Salwar Kamiz . They can wear an a loose-fitting top with Full sleeve instead of T-shirts. Ladies are free to wear skirts that cover the knees. However, a skirt is not likely the best wear, particularly for those keen on a camel ride or sand-boarding.

Men and women are advised to bring along jackets, sweaters, or shawls as the temperature falls a lot during the night. They should also carry a scarf or wrapping around the face for protection from the sun and sand.

Footwear for the Safari

dubai city tour dress code

Light boots, Sneakers, and flip-flops would be okay as most of the dune bashing drive will be on the jeep. Light boots and Sneakers would be better for walking on dunes and for keeping the feet snug in the camp at night. However, flip-flops and sands are also okay.

dubai city tour dress code

Visitors must carry Sunglasses and a hat for shade. Lip balm and sunscreen are good. Heavy makeup could cause sweating and thus is better avoided.

Families that bring along kids must carry a towel, extra clothing, diapers, baby cream, feeding bottles, and the like.

So, visitors who go for a desert trip in Dubai can wear practically anything. Women can wear short and anything what makes you comfortable.
