Great way to enjoy Halifax by land and sea. The tour uses refurbished and repurchased Vietnam War amphibious boats. It is really a lot of fun. The best part is splashing into the bay. The Captain and narrator do an excellent job at telling the history of Halifax. Unfortunately, most of it is pretty grim. In 1918 there was a blast from a ship that exploded because it was carrying explosives and collided with another ship. Anyone that was outside during the blast was blinded. That was a good portion of the town. The tour travels on a hill that was a burial ground. Also, the Titanic sunk off the shores of the city. Viewing the Halifax from the harbor gives you a whole new perspective. It was fun, especially when the other Harbor Hopper boat passed us. The boats fit many people. I would wear a mask even though you are outside. You are all cramped together. My husband came back from Canada with Covid-19. It may have been from the Harbor Hopper. Also, wear a hat and sunscreen. Thanks so much for a great time!
Don't miss this amazing tour of Halifax and it's harbor on the amphibious bus/boat! This is truly one of the kind experience. After the tour of the city, we splashed into the harbor and enjoyed the city from the water. Fantastic! If you are lucky, you will get Bethany as the captain and Matt as the first mate. Bethany can navigate land and water equally skillfully, while Matt will make you laugh for an hour (if you pay attention to his great jokes:).
Owen you were awesome! Thanks for the informative and hilarious trip. This was the 2nd tour we have done and will be back for more.
It was a cold, rainy, and basically all-around misery of a day. We had walked around Halifax for a couple of hours and were soaked straight through but still wanted to go on the duck tour we had reserved a few days prior. And we're so glad we did! We learned a few very important things on this tour by our 12-year old tour guide Annabelle: 1. Waving to Citadel Hill is not considered crazy. It's what the locals do (and do as the locals do or else the tour guide gets tetchy!). 2. Don't run up Citadel Hill in the dark. You may fall into the "Pit of Death" and sprain your ankle. 3. The locals have lunch with live music in a park in the summers, which is accompanied by an also live cannon punctuating noon. There's nothing like a little firepower to charge up ones lunch hour. 4. You are toured down a street that 30,000 people walk down daily, but do not get to hit any of them. 5. It felt like The Captain drove into the water at full speed. No kidding, this was not a "wading" experience. Loved it. 6. And last but not least, It's not a duck tour, it's an "amphibious LARC V" vehicle tour, which is much MUCH better than a duck tour. For one thing, they bought American! Another thing Is you get to luxuriate in a million dollar vehicle for your tour. For another thing... You'll have to take it to find out the rest! Thank you very much to our driver/captain and our tour guide Annabelle. Just kidding Abigail! See we Hawaiians on your chilly Harbour Hopper tour were paying attention (even though we didn't wave at Citadel Hill. She was sleeping and we thought it would be rude to wake her). We loved your tour and know that your Mom (Hi Mom!) would be proud of you. Abigail is an educational and very entertaining tour guide! P.S. If this is your one and only lifetime trip to Halifax, you may want to bring your own flag. If Abigail is your tour guide, you'll find out why!
Amphibious tour bus... Nuff said To be honest I'm not a fan of tour buses. I prefer to use Yelp as my tour guide. That being said I decided to try this out because I don't get the opportunity to ride amphibious vehicles very often. Dress accordingly and prepare to get wet. Engine is loud at the back. So move to the front if you want to listen to the tour guide. Kudos to her. It was an entertaining and informative tour. I got to learn about Halifax history, breweries, and lunch spots. Needless to say I was on a strict diet of fish & chips and Alexander Keith for a while. Ribbit ribbit, mutha frogger!
The 7-day Tour East Bus trip that I'm traveling on stopped here; we have 50 tourists in our group. The $222.50 attractions package includes access to the Whale Watching Boat Tour, Thousand Island Boat Tour, Hopewell Rocks, Maritime Museum, etc., of which this attraction is one of the experiences. The 1 hour Harbour Hopper Tour is the current attraction. Lots of Halifax history presented by the Captain and First Mate. It's a worthwhile land and waterfront experience on a "$1 Million amphibious vehicle". This company bought 5 of the 900 United States military vehicles built for the Vietnam War and retrofitted them as a tourist experience. Historical Canada
I'd always seen the HH driving about town and wondered why people would do something so touristy... But I did get a free ticket from a friend to go so thought I would give it a whirl. It was actually very educational, even for a Haligonian and I learnt a lot of things about the city I didn't know before (ie Brunswick street used to be called "knock 'em down alley", who knew? It was nice that it was both a water and land tour since it gives you perspective of the city from every angle. The tour guide was super enthusiastic and good at her job. She clearly knows a lot about the noisy and was wager to share, I'd definitely recommend this to anyone whether you're from Halifax or just visiting.
Adrian was an incrediblel tour guide. Informative and humorous. Excellent intro to Halifax.
A good place to start a visit to Halifax. Corny jokes and stories, peppered with a bit of real history and a nice overview of downtown sites.
What's more unique and fun than doing a tour of Halifax in a LARC-V? You get a land and sea experience in the amphibious vehicle while learning about the history and hot spots of Halifax. The guided tour is about an hour, travels around downtown and into the water to give you a different perspective of the boardwalk. Something worth checking out whether you're visiting or call Halifax home, you never know what you might learn!

A Halifax harbour cruise like no other
The Violet Mac is our all-electric, environmentally-friendly 1930s-style harbour launch. With a maximum passenger load of eight people, we provide a truly personable experience.
Our harbour cruises are all about you. Your certified Captain will plan your excursion based on weather, marine traffic, special events, and expert local knowledge. You could be watching the sunset. No matter, you’re guaranteed to experience the water views of the Halifax skyline. Marine wildlife love our whisper-quiet electric motors, so you are sure to see some of the many birds, mammals, and other aquatic life in our harbour during your tour.
Halifax's Only Zero-Exhaust Harbour Tour
Harbour cruise $40/seat, harbour morning $500/cruise, evening skyline $500/cruise, frequently asked questions, what to expect, what will i see on the tour.
Your Halifax Harbour Tour is unique every single time! Your captain will chart a course for your tour based on factors such as weather, marine traffic, and special events, with one goal in mind: to give you the most enjoyable relaxed tour of our beautiful harbour!
Some parts of the harbour you might see on a tour include Dartmouth and Halifax Waterfronts , George’s and McNab’s Islands, and of course, the Halifax Harbour marine wildlife. They love our ultra-quiet electric motor, so you are sure to see some of the many birds, mammals, and other aquatic animals in our harbour during your tour.
Am I expected to leave a tip for our Captain or Tour Guide?
Our crew do not expect guests to leave them tips. That said, our captain and tour guides are allowed to accept tips if offered to them, so if you feel that someone on your tour deserves a tip and you wish to give them one, you are more than welcome to do so — and we thank you for your generosity!
If you wish to leave a tip for your Guide and/or Captain but do not have any cash on hand, ask them about their “digital tip jar” that allows you to send them a tip using your credit card.
What should I wear?
We will always do our best to make sure you are comfortable. The cabin is not fully enclosed, so on cooler, drizzling days, please come prepared for the day’s weather. While there is no heater on board, we have blankets for your use should you need them.
Generally speaking, dress appropriately for the weather, and keep in mind it tends to be a little cooler and breezier on the water and can be quite cool in spring and fall.
Also be sure to wear sun protection, even on cloudy days!
Is the tour suitable for all ages and abilities?
Harbour Tours are suitable for everyone, of all ages. There is no substantial physical effort required to enjoy our tours, but please note that there is a ramp between the wharf and the dock, and a small step up is necessary from the dock into the boat. Of course, we can offer a helping hand. Most able-bodied Guests have no problem with this. Kids LOVE our tours, and so does the rest of the family. We promise!
Checking in
What do i need when i arrive at the dock.
When you arrive at the dock, please present your guide with the booking confirmation that you received by email when you booked your seats. You can show it to us on your phone, or you can bring along a printed copy.
Please arrive 15 min before departure.
