In 711 CE, Muslims from North Africa invaded the Iberian Peninsula. They stayed in Spain until 1492 when the Catholic Monarchs overthrew the King of the “Emirato de Granada.”

As a result, Spain has a rich, overflowing Islamic culture and an enormous artistic and architectural heritage, including palaces, mosques, and much more.

• The Mosque of Cordoba

The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba was built in the 8th century  under Emir Abd ar-Rahman I on the remains of a Visigothic Christian church (the Basilica of St. Vincent Martyr). 

The Emir wanted Cordoba to eclipse Byzantium and Baghdad in science, culture, and the arts. The sultan had recently fled there after his family’s overthrow in Damascus.

There are many reasons why you should visit The Mosque of Cordoba. For instance, the Mosque of Cordoba was the second largest mosque in the world, behind Mecca for a long time.

The Alhambra and Generalife, Granada

The Alhambra was a palace, citadel, and fortress, the residence of the Nasrid sultans, high officials, court servants, and elite soldiers. It reached its splendor in the second half of the 14th century, coinciding with the sultanates of Yusuf I (1333-1354) and the second reign of Muhammad V (1362-1391).

Why should you visit the Alhambra and Generalife?

The Alhambra is a must-see monument. It bears witness to the Moorish rule in the territory and its architectural style, which is why it was recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

You should also make a visit to enjoy its gardens and surroundings. Its majestic towers are a must-see once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Dress code of the Alhambra and Generalife

The Alhambra has no specific dress code. Depending on the time of year, we recommend either something cool to deal with the hot Summer temperatures or, in Winter taking a jumper due to the breeze.

It is mandatory to present your original ID or passport to access the monumental complex.

It’s essential to be on time for the Nasrid Palaces. Don’t forget to bring the ticket with its QR code in physical or digital format (including for children under 12 years).

Aljafería Palace, Zaragoza

The Aljafería Palace is an 11th-century Moorish castle-palace. It was built as a recreational residence for the Taifa kings in the 11th century under King al-Muqtadir. Remains of its fortified enclosure are still preserved. It was built as a place of recreation and also served as a defensive building.

Why should you visit the Aljafería Palace?

You can not miss the Aljaferia Palace because it is considered one of the peaks of Hispano-Muslim art, along with the Alhambra in Granada and the Mosque of Cordoba. 

Also, it is the northernmost Islamic palace in Europe and the most luxurious and best-preserved of the Taifa period.

How long does the Aljafería Palace tour last?

The duration depends on if the visit is guided or not. Free tours are about 45 minutes long, and guided tours are 60 minutes.

How much does the Aljafería Palace tour cost?

The prices are as follows:

• General admission: 5€.
• Discount: 1€ for students and the retired.
• Free: Children under 12 years old.

Dress code of the Aljafería Palace

There is no specific dress code, so we recommend dressing according to the season. The Summer will be tremendously hot, so dress light and apply plenty of sun cream. Alternatively, a jumper is a great idea against the wind in the Winter.

Guided visits will be available during July and August. The English tour begins at 11 am, while the French tour starts at 5 pm.

Please be punctual when arriving at the ticket office. If a visitor is ten minutes late, they risk not being able to enter the palace (or at the very least a lengthy wait) if all other groups are full.

Use the QR codes located at various points of the monument and the brochures available.

Madinat al-Zahra: Archaeological Ensemble, Córdoba

The history of Medina Azahara begins with Abderraman, III. He decided to build a city on the outskirts of Cordoba between 936 and 976. Abderraman, III built the city to bring together the caliphate’s administrative and residential work.

The materials used in its construction tell us of the great interest of the monarch to show his great power and supremacy. 

Why should you visit Medina Azahara?

Medina Azhara is a must-see because it’s one of Andalusia’s most important works of Muslim art. In its time, it was the highest expression of the rise and power of the Caliphate of Cordoba.

How long does the Medina Azahara tour last?

The approximate time of the visit to Medina Azahara, including the museum tour, is between 2.5 and 3 hours.

How much does the Medina Azahara tour cost?

The entrance to Medina Azahara is free for citizens of the European Union. For all other visitors, the entrance fee is 1.50 €.

There is no specific dress code to enter the Medina Azahara. Therefore, dress according to the season; in the Summer months, something light and fresh, while in Winter, a jumper (or if very cold, a coat) to stay warm.

It is not necessary to bring your original passport. A copy should be fine to authenticate your nationality.

There is a bus that drives you from Cordoba to Medina Azahara. Its price is 2,50€. Children between 5-12 years are 1,50€.

The Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville

In the year 913, the Umayyad caliph Abderramán III ordered the construction of a new center of government in Seville on the site of an ancient Visigothic settlement that had previously been Roman. 

This “multicultural” curiosity about its foundation seems a foretaste of the many historical ups and downs that would shape its present appearance. 

After the disintegration of the Caliphate of Cordoba, the Royal Alcazar would pass into the hands of the abbots (Taifa of Seville), the Almoravid emirs, and, in the last Islamic Period, the Almohads. 

The successive reforms of that time had already turned the Real Alcázares into an excellent palace complex surrounded by walls in the middle of the 13th century.

Why should you visit The Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville?

The Alcázar of Seville was built as a fortress to protect the Muslim authorities and is currently the oldest royal palace in Europe. Its extensive history is reflected in the variety of its architecture, which mixes Baroque with Renaissance, Romanesque, Gothic and Mudejar.

How long does the Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville tour last?

The recommended duration of the visit is two hours, although you can make a quick visit in one hour and fifteen minutes. But if you want to do a detailed visit, it requires about three hours.

How much does the Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville tour cost?

The entry fees are as follows:

• General admission: 14,50€.
• Pensioners and students from 17 to 25 years old: 7€ (you must show proof at reception).
• For children under 13 years old: 1€.
• Audioguide: 6€.

There is no specific dress code. Seville can be unbearably hot during the Summer, so dress light. During the Winter, you will likely only need a jumper at most.

The use of tripods or stands is prohibited.

Famous Islamic Architecture in Spain

Muslim art, also known as Islamic art, is the set of artistic manifestations that occurred in the different religious areas of Islam.

Islamic art and, in particular, Islamic architecture in Spain can be classified into 5 stages depending on the different reigns:

1. Cordovan or Caliphal Period (8th-11th century)

Characteristics.

Cordovan art has many influences from Visigothic art, especially in the use of horseshoe arches. 

It’s also very characteristic to see voussoirs in color and texture (alternating striped colors). This alfiz is a molding explicitly used to frame the arches or the openings of windows and doors.

The famous art of this period

During this period, the most well-known pieces of architecture are:

• Central vault of Macsura
• The Mosque of Bad el-Mardum in Toledo
• Madinat as-Zahra Palace in Cordoba

2. Taifa Period (11th-12th century)

The art of the Taifa kingdoms was characterized by emulating the splendor of the previous era, with almost excessive overloading of ornamental constructions. 

Despite the everyday use of low-cost plasterwork materials, it served its ornamental function well. Unfortunately, very few buildings have been preserved due to poor quality materials.

Famous art of this period

One of the few buildings we still have from this Period is La Aljafería Palace in Zaragoza.

3. Almorávide Period (12th century)

The use of the muqarnas characterized its artistic manifestations. This decorative element is a stalactite hanging from the arches and domes and is made of plaster, often polychrome.

It is an art that is heavily linked to the Taifa kingdoms. However, there are hardly any remains and significant samples of this period, the best preserved being those found in North Africa.

4. Almohade Period (12th century)

This civilization arrived in the Peninsula and brought with it

one of the most original and new elements that had not been used before, known as sebka. Sebka is a type of geometric decoration in the form of a network of superimposed rhombuses that masks the construction systems.

The most important building of this period was the Mosque of Seville nowadays. Only a few parts have been preserved:

• Patio de los naranjos
• The “minaret” today is known as the Giralda

5.Nazarí period (13th-15th century)

The materials were poor but covered with plasterwork, marble, sebka, and tiles. As for constructive elements, the most common are the round arches and the white marble columns with thin shafts and Corinthian capitals.

Since Granada was the capital of Al-Andalus during this time, all the representations of this period are in La Alhambra. 

Some parts worth mentioning are:

• Patio del Cuadro Dorado.
• Patio de Comares.
• Patio de los Leones.

Famous Islamic Art in Spain

Unfortunately, there remain very few Islamic art sculptures and paintings in Spain. However, we know that Muslim decorative arts varied, ranging from ceramics to carpets, fabrics, and goldsmiths.

Among the few sculptural works that have been preserved, it is worth mentioning the bronze fawn from the Madinat as-Zahra Palace in Cordoba. 

In painting, it is of particular interest the fresco on tesso painted on the vault of the Sala de los Reyes of the Alhambra with courtly themes and hunting.

Which city in Spain has a famous old mosque?

The oldest mosque in Spain is the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba. It used to be a mosque, although nowadays it is a catholic cathedral.

What was the Islamic capital of Spain?

The capital of Islamic Spain has varied throughout the years. 

Firstly, the capital changed between Seville and Cordoba during “Valiato de Al-Ándalus” between 711 and 756 CE. 

Later on, in 756 CE Abd al-Rahman III declared religious independence and proclaimed “El Califato de Córdoba” in Cordoba as its capital.

Lastly and due to the reconquest, in 1238, the “Emirato de Granada” was established. Granada became its capital until 1492 when the Catholic Monarchs overthrew King Muhammad XII.

Day 1 - Malaga Airport to Cordoba 

After meeting at Malaga Airport we will proceed to Cordoba. We will arrive at lunch time, you can have free time for lunch, After lunch we will visit the Great Mosque of Cordoba, the Bridge of Musa ibn Nusayr, Calahorra Tower, which are the main visits of the day. After the guided tour, there will be free time in the old quarters. Overnight in Cordoba. 

Day 2 -  Cordoba to M.Azahra to Seville

After Breakfast we will visit Madinah Al-Zahra archeological site and an interactive Museum. It was the City of the Umayyad Khalifa during the 10th Century, it represents the pinnacle of Muslim rule in Spain. Afterwards we will proceed to Seville. Here we will visit the Royal Alcazar, a Christian Palace built by Muslim craftsmen with unique mudejar decoration; the Giralda Tower; the former Minaret of the Mosque of Seville from the year 1182. Plaza España is our last stop in Seville, we will try to view the sunset here. After the guided tour, there will be free time in the Muslim quarters to explore and for shopping. Dinner and overnight in Seville.

Day 3 -  Seville to Granada

After Breakfast, we will continue our journey to Granada (2hrs). On arrival in Granada we will check-in at the hotel to freshen up. In the evening we will visit the Albayzin, former Muslim quarters, enjoy panoramic views of Alhambra. Dinner and overnight in Granada.

Day 4 -  Alpujarra Mountains

After Breakfast we will make our trip to the Alpujarra mountains, where the last Muslims of Al-Andalus were living and practicing Islam for more than 150 years after the fall of Granada. New Muslims are living here now, some with their own olive plantations, possibly the very same olives trees that were once planted by the Muslims who fled to these mountains hundreds of years ago. We will visit the traditional village of Pampaneira, where you can see the local carpets, the chocolate factory, traditional houses, and the beautiful architecture of the place. We will have lunch in a local restaurant, and after this we will go to the countryside, where you can walk around the orange orchards and olive trees. We will return to Granada where you will have free time for shopping and exploring the area. Overnight in Granada.

Day 5 -  Alhambra, Granada

After breakfast we will visit the Alhambra, the most visited monument in Spain, and the best preserved medieval Muslim royal palace in the world. During our visit we will walk in the royal houses of the Muslim sultans from the Nasrid dynasty, founded by Muhammad al-Ahmar, and we will “Read the Alhambra”, by following the Arabic inscriptions on the walls, full of du’a, Qur’an, poetry and more. We will then visit the main Masjid of Granada, where we will offer prayers. For the rest of the day you will have free time to relax, explore and shopping. Overnight in Granada

Day 6 - Granada to Malaga Airport

After breakfast, we will head to Malaga Airport according to the drop off time. If you want to stay longer in Granada or Malaga, we can help you to arrange a public bus to Malaga Airport on your departure day.

Adventure in Uzbekistan 2022

At the first instance of being introduced to the itinerary I knew this was a trip seldom found anywhere else. I had been researching about Uzbekistan since just before the pandemic and there didn't seem to be any travel provider that matched my aspirations as well as carrying an Islamic/Muslim-friendly theme. European Muslim-Friendly Cities where to spend your next holidays

Most Muslims worldwide would think twice about travelling to Europe as they feel it’ll be hard to find halal food. But thanks to the presence of the Turks, the Moroccans, and the Algerians in the cities, you’ll easily be able to find halal food all around these cities! Not only that but there are also mosques in certain areas, making it convenient for every Muslim traveller venturing into the city.

From visiting the largest department store in Europe (KaDeWe) to taking a stroll in the Grunewald forest, Berlin has everything that’ll entertain your wandering heart!

This city pleases everyone from the shopping enthusiasts to the nature lovers, and whatever your personality is, you’ll find this city magnificent nonetheless?  Not to mention that it’s the place where the iconic Berlin Wall is located!

Berlin is also the home of around 300,000 Muslims, which covers 10% of the whole population in the city! You’ll easily find mosques around the city, such as the Berlin Central Mosque, Omar Ibn Al-Khattab Moschee, Wilmersdorfer Moschee, İbrahim Al-Khalil Moschee and Büyük Camii?

Berlin also offers more than 60 halal restaurants! If you’re on a tight budget during your trip, you can head down to Rayan Chicken for yummy Turkish food or Maroush for delicate Lebanese food?

Just like its sister city, Berlin, Hamburg also offers various tourist attractions ranging from historical places to countless museums and incredible architecture. And hey, it’s a major port city in Northern Germany, and it’s no surprise if you find some cool fish markets and water activities too?

Turkish people are the largest migrant community in the city, and their population is around 93,000. The number of Muslims in the city takes up 200,000 people, and it’s more than 10 per cent of the city’s population. There are more than 20 mosques in the city; some of the popular ones include Islamisches Zentrum and Centrum Moschee, just to name a few!

For affordable Turkish food, enjoy Turkish barbecue at Restaurant Pamukkale Koz, taste Lebanese delicacies at Békaa Libanesisches Restaurant and Restaurant L’Orient or experience Persian cuisine at Restaurant Teheran! If Middle Eastern cuisine is not to your taste, Jawa Restaurant is also a good choice as it offers authentic Indonesian food?

3. Frankfurt

Say hello to the home of museums, fine arts and breathtaking architectural buildings?  Beautifully located on the River Main, this old imperial city will bring romance back and have a classic sensation when you’re in it! As its city’s skyline is highly influenced by North American culture, it also earns the nicknames Manhattan and Chicago of the Main. If you visit this city, don’t forget to enjoy the Römerberg (Frankfurt’s Old Town Center) to witness the city’s historical buildings. Goethe House and Museum is a good place for those in fine arts, while Senckenberg Natural History Museum offers a wonderful sensation for those who love museums with modern touches!

The city comprises around 11.8% of Muslims and is one of the most Muslim-friendly cities in Germany. There are four main mosques in the city and they are: Pak Muhammadi Moschee, Bait-us-Sabuh, İslamische Gemeinde Mevlana and Islamische Gemeinde Rodgau.

Although dominated by Turkish cuisines like Bayram Kebap Haus, Doy Doy Restaurant and Ramo’s Grill & Kebap Haus, you can also taste some Persian delicacies at Kish restaurant. You can just as well satisfy your Asian appetite by visiting Thai Fun to enjoy some of the finest Thai delicacies around 😋

Munich is a city that offers you endless tourist attractions such as the landmark Frauenkirche and historical buildings with marvellous architecture in the Altstadt old town. The Tierpark Hellabrunn is the world’s biggest zoo; you definitely don’t want to miss this when you visit this beloved city. If you’re a fan of nature, you’ll definitely be interested in visiting Englischer Garten, a gigantic natural park with iconic swimming holes!

This city is a must-visit, and we’re pretty sure most of you would find it an experience of a lifetime. From iconic Big Ben, spectacular London Eye, majestic Buckingham Palace, Tower of London and historic Westminster Abbey, this city offers you unstoppable beauty that’s to die for!

London is also home to more than one million Muslims 😱 Some mosques you’ll have to visit are The London Central Mosque, East London Mosque, Fazal Mosque and Leyton Mosque. There are also some Islamic centres in the city, such as Deptford Islamic Centre, East London Mosque & London Muslim Centre and The Islamic Cultural Centre. Vienna is Austria’s capital and the largest city, and it’s absolutely rich with beautiful sights 🥰 The attractions vary from great palaces such as Schloss Schönbrunn, the uniquely enchanting Riesenrad Ferris Wheel, and the mindblowing Hofburg İmperial Palace!

There are two main reasons to visit Barcelona: You’re either a big fan of its famous football team or want to feel the city’s romance! A bonus point is that you can stay away from the bustling tourist bus?

Well, this is one of the most romantic cities people have on their bucket lists. And news flash, it’s also Muslim friendly too. The city is packed with iconic attractions such as Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame de Paris, the Louvre and Arc the Triomphe. And if you are a fashionista, this city is a dream come true. You can visit some free attractions such as the most haunting spot in Paris, Cimitière du Père Lachaise, or the beautiful waterfront, Canal St-Martin.

For your hunt for halal food in Paris, you can taste some Middle Eastern and Mediterranean delicacies at Le Helem and Chez le Libanais (Lebanese), Les Quatre Frères (Arabian) or Pacha Kebab (Turkish). If you’re up for some fancy dinners, you can check out one of the  best  French fine dining restaurants at Alcazar 😍

10. Brussels

Brussels is the capital city of Belgium and also the capital of the European Union. Most people would think about waffles when they hear about this city, and yes, they DO have some of the most delicious waffles in the world!

The city is home to beautiful attractions like Grand Place (Grote Markt), Belgian Comic Strip Center, Place Royale (Koningsplein), Belgian Royal Museum of Fine Arts and Atomium. Known for its beautiful historical buildings, this city will give you unending pleasures, and you would wish that you would be here again soon☺️

Halal food and mosques are things you should not worry about while travelling in Brussels! The city is packed with so many cultures, and you can easily find Arabian halal food (Bab El Hara) and Moroccan delicacy (Le Livre Jaune) and even Ethiopian halal cuisine (Kokob) in the city!

11. Copenhagen

With so many tourist attractions and most of them within walking distance of each other, Copenhagen is a place where you can enjoy the beauty of all sorts of sights! Nyhavn is a must-visit place where you can feel the city’s romance, and marvel at beautiful buildings such as the Christiansborg Palace, Kronborg Castle and Amalienborg Palace!

12. Amsterdam

Whether hopping on your bike or taking a canal cruise, Amsterdam will give you the most memorable journey of your life. You’ll want to visit over and over again as the beautiful city is home to fine arts, museums and beautiful parks?  Not forgetting the countless cafes along the pretty cobbled streets! Don’t miss out on The Rijksmuseum, The Anne Frank Museum, or The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam!

14% of Amsterdam’s population consists of Muslims, showing a high growth level compared to the presence of Muslims in the 1990s! An amazing 5 day Andalusia tour with Ahmad from Ilim Tour. Ahmad, our tour guide, gave us (myself and my 2 teenage children aged 16 and 18) in-depth information about each of the sites we visited in Cordoba, Seville and Granada and modified our tour to suit the interests of me and my teens (e.g we hiked near Alhambra and also looked at some of the works of the professional grafitti artists around Granada since my daughter loves contemporary street art). Ahmad had an easy going personality which was perfect for our group. He was also considerate, always asking if we wanted to walk or take the car to the next site. There was no hassle trying to find good food in a new country, as Ahmad not only knew all the halal restaurants, but which ones specialised in which types of food. We were always offered at least 2 options for restaurants for lunch and dinner. Ahmad also knew where all the mosques where (mosques are not easy to find in contemporary Spain), and set aside time in the program for salah. Yasin was our guide for Alhambra. His passion for the palace and it’s Islamic history as well as his knowledge of Arabic, art and history brought this beautiful palace to life. In conclusion, great food, considerate tour guides and awe-inspiring sites. We would love to book another tour in future with the wonderful Ilim Tour guides.

I knew a little bit about Andalusia from an old history. But when our daughters sponsored us to go there with a special tour guide, Yasin, oh my God it was more than just a tour. Me and my daughter enjoyed an excellent guided tour of Muslim Seville, Cordoba and Granada. Our tour guides Yasin, Alaudin and Rafa were outstanding in their delivery of information- they all spoke with passion and deep knowledge and understanding of their Spanish Muslim past; it was as if they were retelling a drama and made history come to life. Our group booked this tour group to Seville, Cordoba and Granada. we were picked up and dropped off at Malaga airport. It is a full service tour, included travel in private taxi, 4 star hotel stay and paid entry with guide to all historical sites. The tour guide was a young man with a very pleasant and helpful personality. He was very knowledgeable about Arabic and Islamic Spanish history. His translations and knowledge about the Arabic inscriptions were very impressive. One day he arranged dinner at a local farm, it was a wonderful experience and the Moroccan food was excellent. This was a tour we will never forget. Although we visited in 2014 we still have vivid images of the places we visited with Yasin. He was with us every step of the way. The best vacation ever!! Yasin Maymir of Ilm tour has given us an amazing journey that both culturally enriching and spiritually uplifting. He started the journey by picking us up from a hotel in Malaga on March 30, 2017 that he booked for us even though it was not part of the package. From that date to our departure on April 3rd, Yasin Maymir was not only a tour guide but a caring member of family to us. Probably one of the best ways to explore Andalucia, san a private tour! Yaseen was attentive while booking the tour; he was a great help with prompt suggestions and kind feedback. Our guide Mohammad Scott was incredible. He was friendly, helpful, kind, and very lovely. My mother and I joined the trip, and at one point we faced some health issues. Scott was very helpful; he helped us explore our options, and spoke on the phone in Spanish whenever we couldn’t find someone who spoke English. He made sure to check up on us and see that everything is settled. The driver was competent and lovely himself. The tour itself was well-organized, informative and entertaining. Hotels and transportation were excellent. Overall, great value for the trip and I have already recommended Ilimtour to family and friends. Just make sure you have a pair of really comfortable shoes because there us a lot of walking.

We went on tour 2 weeks ago and absolutely loved it. Our tour guide Alauddin was brilliant..we gained a lot of knowledge from him. There was 11 of us in total and we were all grateful that we had him as our guide, its hard to find someone so kind and helpful, when he dropped us off at the airport it felt like we were leaving a family member behind. If we ever go Spain again we will definitely be contacting this company and requesting for Alaudin. The places we visited were so beautiful and everything was sorted out for us, didnt have to worry about booking hotels, finding transport etc. Also felt so good skipping all the queues outside the palaces and it was nice to have someone with you that can help translate. Me and my sister went for the September tour, as our first holiday in Europe. Got to say it was memorable. We went to many beautiful places and we met wonderful people on the tour group which was amazing. We also met the Muslim community of the towns we visited which was awesome. Our tourguide Ayman was very kind and showed us around to all the cool places as well, even when we were not doing the tour and went to hang out afterwards. I would recommend this organisation to everyone, it was not regrettable!

We went on the Andalusia tour last week and I can safely say that it has been one of the best trips we’ve been on. It was truly an unforgettable experience. We learnt so much about the history of Muslims in Spain, and we got to meet local Muslims and visit orange and olive trees farms. Thanks to our amazing guide Yasin. 19 March 2019. I was a bit hesitant to book this tour at first, but my worries dissipated when I read the other positive reviews. As a start, Leilya provided detailed answers to my (inquisitive) email queries. The online registration went very smooth. Our tour guide Malik Gil spared no effort to make our experience of Spain a memorable one for my family of 4 (My two teenagers 13 & 14 remained focused the entire time). Armed with top communications skills and English fluency, Malik adapted the program after our keen interest in the people of Spain. (If you are like me and welcome the opportunity to mingle with locals, your tour guide will offer you the opportunity to meet some great folks – We had 3 meals in the company of local families). The other tour guides from the company (Yasin, Alauddin, Scott as well as a few others) came accross to us as people who genuinely love their work. I make the intention to return to Spain Insha’Allah one day. I give this tour company a solid 5 star rating for its professionalism & customer service. Keep it up!

I was a bit hesitant to book this tour at first but I am so glad I did. I had the pleasure of being part of Mohammed Koka’s tour group and had one of the most amazing experiences. Along with the usual, extremely beautiful tourist hunts, we also got to experience the local Muslim culture and had the opportunity to dine with a local Muslim family. Traveling with Illim tours was such a wonderful experience. I came in with very little knowledge of what to expect and was pleasantly surprised with all of the activities planned out for us. I enjoyed learning about Islamic history from the locals and exploring all of the beautiful and diverse landscapes of Andalusia (although it did look very similar to California). Our tour guide Mohammed Coca, ‘Coca’, as he’s called was rather laid-back but very willing to adjust our travel plans to meet everyone’s needs. He was a captivating story teller and a great tour guide overall. We were traveling with a 3 year old in our group (my nephew) and Coca was always mindful of the fact that we may have to take things a little slow or rest in between outings and my sister and the rest of the group appreciated that. Throughout this tour, you see so much of Andalusia and it does not feel as overwhelming or unpersonalized than if we were to have traveled with a bigger tour group. On top of learning about the Islamic history, we had dinner with a local family in Cordoba and gained some insight into what it is like being a Muslim in Spain. One thing that was not my favorite was the quality of the beds at the hotel we stayed at in Granada (the longest stay overall). They were rather old and hurt my back after the first night, so I would recommend seeing if it would be possible to get better beds or stay at a different hotel in Granada. Also, I was a bit disappointed that we did not go to the olive oil orchard and see how olive oil is processed. I suspect we did not have time since I was leaving early from Granada, but I was still very much looking forward to this part of the tour. Other than that, it was a great experience and I highly recommend to any Muslims looking for a different type of vacation experience.

The Best Muslim Friendly Resorts in Europe 2023

Over the years Europe has become a great destination for halal holidays, especially for European Muslims looking to get away during the summer holiday. 

This article was initially written in 2016, and while doing research for the best Muslim-friendly resorts in Europe back then, I knew I struggled to find places offering halal food but also options for modesty. 

Well, your 2023 summer halal resort options are so much better now, and I am really excited to see how many halal-friendly places offer halal food and places to pray. 

Truly is an exciting time for Muslim travellers. 

What is a Halal Resort or a Muslim-friendly resort?

Before we start with all the resorts I recommend for your halal travel in Europe this summer, I want to point out something. 

There is no 100% halal resort pretty much anywhere in Europe in the sense that you won’t hear music for example, something that many complain about in Turkey resorts, or that you will always have halal food. Sadly there is nothing 100% 

However, there are many Muslim-friendly that have come to understand that Muslims are part of this world and also a great customer segment, and they try to cater to their needs as much as possible. 

I have an article on this and my opinion and you can read more here. 

There are many amazing European resorts offering privacy and activities for Muslims, but, for example, they don’t serve halal food. However, you will have a great time and experience a new destination. 

I have done my best to compile a list that includes a good mix, and I do encourage Muslims to go to places with Muslim-friendly options at least once a year because if we want to develop more of a halal travel industry, we need more customers to show those places. It is all about supply and demand. 

These resorts will also make a great Muslim-friendly honeymoon destination for those who want to stay close to home or have budget restraints as they are cheaper than, say, going to Thailand. 

What is the best time to visit and save money?

European summer travel starts from June until about the end of September, with a peak time in July and August which is also, sadly, the school holidays. 

Of course, going outside the school term times is the cheapest. Sadly for many, this is not an option. 

The best way to save money during peak time is to wait until a few weeks after the rush and book during the middle of the week. 

You could easily save a few hundred this way which is better than nothing. 

Also, if your hotel has the option to be booked via hotels.com, I would book since after ten nights; you get a voucher on the average price of your stay. Effectively 10% back. 

How to Make your hotel more halal-friendly

One thing I always recommend, especially with resorts at Muslim-friendly destinations, is to email the hotel upfront and request that, for example, alcohol is out of the room if it bothers you and also to pre-order halal food if this is an option. 

Some of the resorts here offer halal, and others can be removed or ordered prior, so check the notes. 

I also like to email them and ask for my welcome basket to be with non-alcohol. It is just small things that make the start of your holiday better. 

Plus, many properties are happy to accommodate their guests and go the extra mile. 

1 Alanda Hotel Marbella Spain 

Spain is one of the perfect destinations to explore. Barcelona is very popular with Muslim travellers but the South of Spain, such as Andalucia, offers so much Islamic history and makes it one of the closest and more perfect for a halal holiday.  

The Alanda Hotel offers halal food and no alcohol rooms. 

Sadly the pools are mixed, but you can wear your burkini without a problem and splash with the kids. 

There are several halal restaurants near the property as well as a mosque. 

I would also recommend you rent a car and explore some of the beautiful places around Andalucia in Cordoba and Granada.

2 Explorers Hotel, France 

What a perfect gateway for a halal-friendly holiday in Europe and a kid’s dream with themed rooms. There is a large waterpark, and there are always some halal food options available. 

Also, modest swimwear is allowed without a problem, but the pools are mixed. This property is also great if you plan on exploring Disney Paris.

Rhodes is one of my top destinations for Muslim travellers in Greece. It has a lot of Ottoman history you can explore, fantastic beaches and halal restaurants nearby. 

There is so much to do around the city but also just relax on the beach for depending on what type of traveller you are you should definitely consider Rhodes. 

The Atrium hotel offers no alcohol rooms, and you can request halal in advance, but also there are a few restaurants near the hotel. 

There are several historical mosques on the island you can also visit.

4 Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque Resort, Tenerife 

Canary islands and a honeymoon in Europe?

Sounds amazing! Gran Bahia Del Duque Resort Tenerife is a great place where your dream honeymoon can come true. On the island of Tenerife and next to the Atlantic, this resort offers beautiful views and nice weather almost all year round!

You can email and ask for halal food in advance of your stay as well removing the alcohol from your room. Please note, though, that it might be served in the resort. 

Also, you will have no problem wearing your swimwear.

This hotel is a luxurious option and has some stunning views, and other is plenty to explore on the island, so would recommend also renting a car.

5 Cape Sounio Grecohotel, Sounio Greece

As a Greek, there is no better place to vacation, and for me, the Cape Sounio resort is one of the better ones on the Athenian riviera.

Sounio has some really nice beaches, and there is a lot of history plus it is a short drive from Athens about 1hr. 

If you are having a city break in Athens, this is a great place to stay for the weekend. Athens is fast becoming on of the most Muslim-friendly cities in Europe, and there is now officially a mosque as well. 

The hotel is 5-star and located on its own private beach with a very nice spa. I have spent a few summers there and have been to the resort, as it is a popular weekend destination with locals. 

There is a halal option available when you pre-book and request in advance, and also you can also swim with your burkini and hijab,  I have never had a problem with this in Greece. 

There are halal food options in Athens, but in Sounio will be only the hotel option. Still, it makes a great weekend break.

Prices for this hotel start from £200 a night. 

6 Grand Resort Lagonissi, Athens Greece 

I think one of the first-ever 5-star luxury hotels I had ever been to as a teenager was the Grand Resort Lagonissi in Athens for a wedding. 

The property is located not far from Athens on its own cape and offers a great option for those wanting to be close to the city to find halal food but also to relax and enjoy a good summer holiday. This is one of the closest halal hotels you will find in Greece. 

They offer halal options when booked in advance; there are a few small mosques to pray though there is a good 50 min drive also, the resort offers fully private pool villas. 

You can swim with your burkini in the hotel’s pool, or you can rent a private villa which is secluded with walls. Alcohol can be removed from the room if requested as well. 

This is a great option for a honeymoon or a luxurious weekend gateway not far from the UK. 

I would recommend renting a car from Athens airport and driving around the area. There is a lot of beauty and the drive is nice. 

Prices start from £450 and during peak season are higher . If booking, consider via hotels.com for your 10% back. 

7 Wome Deluxe Resort, Turkey

There is no way this list can be complete without the famous Turkey halal resorts. In recent years the Mediterranean sea resorts have become very popular with Muslim travelers looking for fully halal options and private beaches. 

One of the most famous options is the Wome Deluxe resort offering luxury rooms, full halal food buffet options as well as a private beach and pool for women. 

There is also a lot of kids’ entertainment to choose from for the little ones in the family. 

Turkey is definitely a great holiday destination, and there is so much history, so I would as always recommend you either book a day trip or just rent a car to explore the surrounding area. This is a halal all inclusive resort.

Prices for the resort start from £140 per night, and you can book via halal booking.

8 Bera Alanya Resort

One of the most popular hotels for halal holidays in Europe, especially in the summer, is the Bera Alanya hotel in Antalya. 

The resort always has great reviews about the food and kids’ activities. 

You can enjoy Turkish food as well as other cuisine options on the property. There is a ladies’ fully secluded beach as well as a private pool for them. 

There is also no alcohol on the property, and there are prayer rooms as well. 

Y ou can book this via halal booking with prices starting from £130 per night all inclusive. 

9 Sani Resort, Halkidiki Greece

I simply cannot conclude this list without including the Sani resort in Greece. I don’t visit many properties second or third time, and I think Sani Resort is the only hotel I have done this with. 

I first visited over 13 years ago when it had just opened. Since then, it has become one of the most luxurious and popular resorts in Europe, and for a good reason. 

Their rooms, location and customer service are fantastic. I have been there with my family as well as friends and all the times we had a fantastic experience. 

The resort has its own marina, shopping options, several restaurants, as well as a kids club, nightly entertainment for the whole family, and so much more. 

The resort doesn’t offer halal food, but with over 15 restaurants, you can find something to eat, and it will be delicious. We normally go for fish or carbs and greek salad. I have a list of food options you can enjoy in Greece that are halal and traditional.

I have always been welcomed with my hijab and never had issues; I know there are many Muslims who visit every year and enjoy it since I have received emails. 

The reason why I include this property as well in this list is that they are definitely Muslim friendly destinations, and I truly want them to start offering halal as standard. I know you can request this in advance, and they will try and accommodate. 

Prices off-peak season April to May, are reasonable, around £250 for the half board. During the peak season, they can go in the thousands.

This list of Muslim friendly resorts in Europe is just a starting point, hopefully for you to get inspired to try something else as well.

There is so much to see around Europe, and the more we travel, the more we can make the rest of the travel industry to be more halal conscious for their customers.

Seville houses one of the most famous and iconic remnants of Islamic Spain – the Real Alcazar, or Royal Alcazar – a remarkable palace built by the Muslim ruling class in the 8 th century. It is a fine and unique example of Mudéjar art – a style, deeply rooted in cultural diversity and originating from practising Muslims living in Christian territories in historical Spain.

Marvel at the Seville Cathedral, originally AlJama Mosque constructed by the order of the Almohad caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf. Admire the Giralda, now a bell tower for the cathedral, but originally the minaret of the mosque, and in its time the tallest tower in the world, designed to resemble the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakesh.

One of the world’s greatest Islamic buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Mezquita, or Grand Mosque of Cordoba, is a symbol of the worldly, sophisticated culture that flourished here more than a millennium ago, in the 8 th century, when Córdoba was capital of Islamic Spain and western Europe’s biggest, most cultured city.

The design evolved for around 200 years to its final form as the Grand Mosque, until it was repurposed as a cathedral and altered accordingly. The iconic and astonishing AlHambra, standing at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, Spain’s highest mountain range, is a jewel in the crown of Islamic Spain. Developed in the 13 th century, Alhambra, a series of palaces, citadel, gardens and orchards, was the residence for the Nasarid sultans and elites, the last remaining Muslim dynasty in Al-Andalus. The profound beauty in its architectural design, intricate detail and engineering leaves visitors in awe of its allure.

Known as the ‘city of three cultures’ due to the peaceful coexistence of  Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities for centuries. Toldeo’s magnificence comes from the numerous mosques, synagogues and churches alongside its palaces and fortresses. Amongst the most famous are the Catedral Primada de Toledo, a gothic cathedral, the Mezquita del

Cristo de La Cruz, the Mosque of Christ of the Light, a 10 th century mosque and the Santa María la Blanca, a former synagogue built in the Muslims style of construction.

Day 2 Seville  Breakfast. Morning visit of Seville former Muslim quarters, Giralda tower neighborhood, Plaza de España, Torre del Oro and Royal Alcazar guided tour. Lunch time. Visit the Mosque of Seville for prayers. Afternoon free and easy at the city center Dinner.

• Formerly the host to a strong Andalusian community back in the 12th century, Granada was the final surviving stronghold of Muslim Spain. Though much has faded, the remnants of its Muslim settlement are very much alive and reflected in Islamic-influenced monuments scattered across the city.

• Seville has retained much of its ancient Moorish heritage, as seen through the preservation of the Royal Alcazar, originally a Moorish fort with picturesque courtyards.

• While most would recognise the Santa Maria de la Sede Cathedral as being the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, the monument now occupies the site of the ancient Aljama Mosque.

• As you make your way to another Moorish fortress, the São Jorge Castle, you'll pass through Alfama, the oldest district in Lisbon. It's easy to get lost in this labyrinth of narrow, cobble stoned streets and cutting corners.
• Before attempting to hike up the steep hill where the castle sits, take a breather at one of the many hole-in-the-wall cafes in the neighbourhood and have a cuppa or two ☕️

• Take the Tram 28 to Lisbon's local flea market – Feira Da Ladraheld. Translated to Thieves' market, you can purchase unique trinkets like vinyl records, vintage soda cans and more at a steal!

• The land of stunning pastel-coloured, ancient Islamically influenced palaces and ruins, it's the perfect place to brush up on Islamic history.
• Visit the Castelo dos Mouros (Moorish Castle ruins); once an unparalleled vantage point for Muslim armies in Portugal, the Sintra National Palace (former residence of the Muslim Portuguese royalty),  and of course the whimsical Palacio Nacional De Pena!
• A well-preserved medieval Portuguese town, Coimbra is home to Universidade de Coimbra, the oldest university in Europe that's famed for its extensive Baroque library.

• Visit the ruins of the ancient city of Conímbriga, formerly the largest Roman settlement in Portugal. Though not the biggest Roman city back in the day, it's arguably one of the most well-preserved. The city walls are relatively intact, and the mosaic flooring of the olden buildings remain.

• Travel back in time to the Middle-Ages by taking a day trip to some of the schist villages peppered all over Portugal!  These hidden villages are usually located high up in the mountains, away from modern civilization and were left untouched for many decades prior to being discovered by local authorities.
