Al Rahba Organic Farm 182 in Abu Dhabi is worth checking out!
We recently paid a visit to the farm 182, an organic farm located in the outskirts of abu dhabi in al rahba. open only on saturdays to the public, between 8 am and 5 pm, we spent a lovely morning outdoors with kids visiting the fields and walking between the crops to pick vegetables ourselves., more information about the organic label of this farm.
The Al Rahba farm 182 belongs to the IGR farms network. The IGR website mentions that “ IGR farms have been producing and distributing organic vegetables since 2008, on a total surface of around 900.000 sqft. The main farms are located in Al Rahba and Al Khawaneej, where both open air farming and greenhouse farming is practiced. Our farms are certified organic by Emirates Authority for Standardization & Metrology. ”
How does it work?
Upon arrival, head to the outdoor cashier and grab some paper bags – we noticed that regulars were bringing their own trolleys, large baskets and bags to carry vegetables – and head towards the fields.
We were quite impressed with the size of the farm and choice of vegetables, to say the least. We spent quite some time picking green beans, some eggplants, spring onions, cucumbers, cherry and large tomatoes, kale and more…
Once you are done, just come back to the farm entrance where you can add more vegetables to your bags including cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, carrots and many more…
The vegetables are then all measured and you must pay by cash. Although we didn’t see the pricing per kg but we ended up buying quite a lot for less than 100AED.
The 10 reasons why our farm visit was delightful:
1. Great way for the little ones to learn that vegetables don’t grow in supermarkets. 2. Kids love this hands-on outdoor activity…choosing and picking the vegetables the family can cook together 3. This way of shopping helps reduce the ecological footprint and supports the local agricultural economy 4. You experience the fresh farm to table experience 5. This is an easy way to diversify and increase your daily vegetable consumption. 6. If you are in luck you may grab fresh eggs from their henhouse 7. You discover how some vegetables grow… such as fennel, kale or chilies 8. You can get kale leaves that won’t break the bank 9. The atmosphere is friendly and visitors easily socialize sharing their questions and advice about their finds 10. You discover the outskirts of Abu Dhabi and it is refreshing to be surrounded by greenery.

Inside a 50-hectare organic farm in Abu Dhabi
Environment.
If you are a regular consumer of organic food, your daily supplies could well be coming from here
Abu Dhabi: A tour of the Al Rawafed Agriculture Organic Farm in Abu Dhabi makes you feel you are somewhere in the middle of lush tropical greenery and definitely not in the middle of a desert.
Spread over 50 hectares off Sweihan Road, 20km from the main island of Abu Dhabi, the farm is a verdant paradise with acres of banana plantations, corn and fig fields, and netted farms growing tomatoes, bell peppers, lettuce, herbs and even a vineyard with five varieties of grapes.
Nearly 10 tonnes of fresh produce is picked, packed and sent to supermarkets and restaurants daily from this farm, making it one of the biggest local sources of organic products in the emirate.
Be it tomatoes, onions, aubergine (eggplant), sweet corn, herbs, potatoes, cabbage, lettuce or fruit like bananas, figs, melons, watermelons and pomegranate – any organic dinner you rustle up at home could have well come from the Al Rawafed farm.
“We follow different kinds of farming methods here like greenhouse, net farming, glass house as well as open field farming. The biggest challenge is, of course, to keep the crops alive without using pesticides,” Marius Pakker, managing director of the farm, told XPRESS.
Instead of pesticides, the farm uses an organic mix of garlic and chilly water which is sprayed on the crops to keep the insects away.
“We have also recently introduced ‘beneficial insects’, a method where we use ‘good’ insects to eat the ‘bad’ ones that pose a threat to the crops,” said Pakker from Holland who is an expert in farming.
The farm also releases ladybugs (small beetles) into the fields to eat bad insects.
A day at the farm
A typical day at the farm starts at 5.30am when workers start harvesting the crops for the day. “We have to start early before the crops get exposed to the sun,” said Pakker.
The veggies and fruit are collected and taken to the packaging unit in the farm. The produce is washed, sorted and packed according to specifications.
The rest is stored in temperature-controlled cold storages within the unit.
“There are two packing shifts – one in the morning and one in the evening. We have our own transport to deliver the orders to clients in and around Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah,” said Ravi Kiran, product executive, who supervises packaging and storing.
The farm also started exporting to Oman recently.
“We try to reduce the movement and hand contact with the produce to the minimum in order to maintain its freshness and longevity,” said Pakker.
After the products are loaded into trucks, the workers return to their daily task of care and maintenance of crops including weeding, cleaning and pruning.
“At 4.30pm, after workers retire to their accommodation, supervisors start looking at their daily reports.
“Before 6pm, the day is wrapped up so that we are all ready for an early start the next day,” said Pakker.
Did you know?
35 different varieties of fruits and vegetables are produced at the farm.
120 cubic metres of water is needed per hour to water the crops.
In winter water consumption is reduced to 40 or 50 cubes.
An irrigation computer is used to pre-set the amount of water each crop needs based on weekly weather forecasts and humidity in the air.
A total of 185 labourers including supervisory staff work at the farm.
Only two to three percent of UAE population are consumers of fresh organic products.

Consumers should be reminded that plant-based viruses and diseases are the biggest threat to organic farming. This is why many UAE farms restrict access and refrain from permitting customers to pick their own.
At Mary Anne’s Fresh Produce , the team is committed to bringing an incredible variety of products grown locally through sustainable methods. The UAE farm develops innovative products to help local chefs take their dishes to the next level. Products range from edible flowers to microgreens and specialty leaves.
Wherever you choose, there are abundant farms to choose from, visit, and support in the UAE!

Your first stop is a stroll through the lush, green Al Ain Oasis , where you'll reconnect with the beauty of nature. Here, you'll encounter a remarkable landscape featuring 147,000 majestic date palm trees, an array of over 100 plant species, and a glimpse into history, with the ancient but still-operating falaj irrigation system.

Fuel your adrenaline and cool off with exhilarating water-based fun at Al Ain Adventure . Navigate the Middle East's first artificial white-water rafting channels, or try the surfing wall and wakeboarding facility. If you prefer staying dry but crave action, hike to conquer nearby Jebel Hafit , the UAE's second-tallest peak.
Spend the night at Jebel Hafit Desert Park
After a day of exploration and adventure, go to Jebel Hafit Desert Park , your relaxing haven under the stars. Unwind in the solitude of your private tent and take your pick of three different accommodation options, from traditional Bedouin tents to furnished five-star bubble glamping.

Organic Farms to visit in the UAE
11 Mar, 2020 | Dubai | 0 |
Have you ever wondered where your food comes from or how long it takes to get here? We have! Organic farming is so much healthier for the environment (and the local economy) and it emphasises the use of physical, mechanical and biological controls instead of using chemicals that harm the environment.
Living in the UAE doesn’t present the strawberry picking opportunities we remember of a British Summer back home, but there are some brilliant farms to visit with your children where you can introduce them to farm culture (and increase their love of fruit and vegetables at the same time!)
Here are some of the best organic farms in the UAE and the bonus is that you can visit most of them to get to see the organic farming in action and pick your dinner plate – all by yourself!
Emirates Bio Farm
Emirates Bio Farm is the largest privately-owned organic farm in the UAE located between Dubai and Al Ain amidst the red desert dunes of Al Shuwaib. On a 250,000 Sqm facility, Emirates Bio Farm is advocating for environmental protection, health and well-being of all UAE residents through driving a fully integrated visitor centre to allow visitors to experience farming in a safe, educational and fun environment. The farm offers educational tours, farm-to-table meals, affordable shopping and much more only 50 minutes away from Downtown Dubai. So, if you’re looking to escape the city for a fun day out with the family, look no further!
For more information visit www.emiratesbiofarm.com .
Desert Farm Organic
Situated in Al Khwaneej not far from Mushrif Park, Desert Farm Organic have a fabulous farm that’s open to the public each Saturday from 9am until 3pm.
They believe customers should not have to pay more for organic food imported into the UAE that can be a great expense, (both financially and environmentally) when they can offer the same quality items grown locally and offered at a much lower cost.
They offer more than 40 different varieties of vegetables, fruits and herbs, as well as free range organic eggs and delicious honey. They believe that it is healthier, fresher and more sustainable for the UAE then other alternatives available and are one of the few organic farms here that are fully certified by the highest European and American organic certification bodies. This ensures maximum freshness so that their produce goes from farm to fork in only a matter of hours.
It’s an Emirati family business and we love the fact that not only do they offer tours of their fields to see the crops and the domes, but they have their goats roaming around (that are pretty friendly so you can pet them a bit too). On top of this, their honey comes from their own beehives and they offer fresh, home-made lemonade and a popcorn stand for visitors to make them feel welcome!
For more info visit [email protected] or call 0505394332
Organic Oasis
Organic Oasis is a brand you may well recognise from seeing in the supermarkets, however, they believe in us being able to deal directly between their farms and ourselves, so they sell their produce at their farm shop too.
Due to their open transparency policy, you can visit their farm to see how them hand pick their crops and they actively encourage customers to take some time at the weekend to see how their organic farming works. Visitors are invited to pick their own produce and children are even offered the chance to join in with the farmers too.
School tours and private visits are available from Sundays to Thursdays between 8:30 am until 11:00 am and from 15:00 pm to 18:00 pm but prior reservation and confirmation is required. A minimum of 20 people need to attend before a tour can be arranged though, so gather some families together and make for an educational, fun (and tasty) day out!
For more information, you can visit http://organicoasis.ae/en/.
U-Pick at Farm 182
U-Pick at Farm 182 is tucked away in Al Rahba, Abu Dhabi. Their organic produce is both ESMA and EU certified and is much cheaper than what you’ll find in any grocery store! If you aren’t in the picking mood, there’s a small stand by the entrance for fresh picked veggies to-go, however, if your children have tagged along, be prepared to go on a fruit and veg picking adventure.
There are no guided tours, however the staff do explain the layout of the farm before you go on your own picking expedition. Remember to take your own basket and put your walking shoes on and you’ll be traipsing through soil and uneven sand, so high heels are a no-no. Children of all ages are allowed and the farm opens its gates every Saturday from 09:00am until 16:00 pm for ‘Pick Your Own Vegetables’ which makes a really fun day out.
For more info, visit www.igruae.com.
Community Farms
There are several areas to live in Dubai that offer their own community farms, designed to produce their own organic produce to sustain the communities that live there. The Sustainable City has 5 clusters of villas that are connected to a farm that produces vegetables and herbs, and you can read more about their farm here:
So you’re thinking of living in The Sustainable City
Another such community is Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) who have set up a farm to encourage families to grow fruit and vegetables over the winter months. This is open to Cedre and Semmer Villas tenants only and parents and children are invited to join in to participate in the scheme, where they are each given a plot of land, equipped with irrigation, to grow their own vegetables through the Winter until Spring each year. We’re all for initiatives like this that get our children out in the great outdoors and all of this will help to grow their interest in sustainability and the environment.
Yas Farm is situated between Al Ain and Abu Dhabi and produces daily fresh organic produce with a difference. They offer chickens, turkeys, ducks, pigeons, and rabbits as well as eggs and raw goats and camel milk.
Before farming their own products, they used to import food but they needed to use chemicals to keep it fresh and unspoilt before arrival. That is when Royal family guard, Mohammed Salama, turned his hidden passion of farming into a reality to bring us quality, organic meat daily. He aims to provide the public with organic food that is much cheaper than other organic food in the region.
The farm supports biodynamic farming principles and produces its own water that nurtures the land and produces the crops that the animals eat. This farm has banned the use of pesticides and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on their crops, and has banned the use of hormones and antibiotics on its farm animals meaning their customers get the real deal! Their shop is open daily from 9:00-21:00 daily in Abu Dhabi, and their owner Mohammad says that he’d like to invite visitors to the farm very soon. In the meantime if you would like to place an order for delivery, you can email Yas Farm at [email protected].
Greenheart UAE
Greenheart Organic Farms was founded in 2012 by a lady with a genuine desire to grow the best possible organic produce in a difficult farming environment. They began with a weekly delivery service of Mixed Vegetable Boxes to Arabian Ranches and soon after, they launched an online shopping service and they now have a store in Arjan near Miracle Gardens.
Greenheart offer an option that you can actually visit their farm too. They invite Dubai’s residents to take part in an “educational adventure” where you get a tour of the farm and are shown how they grow amazing organic produce in the middle of the desert!
Unfortunately, there’s sometimes a waiting list to visit and the farm visits are for Greenheart customers only but if you would like to find out more or contact them to book a visit, you can email [email protected] .
So with all this inspiration for fresh, tasty and healthy produce, all that’s left for you to do is decide which one you’ll go to!

Visiting Abu Dhabi with kids: theme parks, speed boats and farms
Feb 21, 2024 • 6 min read
Read on for the best activities and top planning tips for a family trip to Abu Dhabi © Cristian Negroni / 500px
Against a backdrop of golden sand and turquoise-lined islands, Abu Dhabi is packed to the dunes with kid-friendly adventures. And thanks to the traditional warm Arabian hospitality afforded to all visitors in this part of the world, families headed to the UAE capital can expect a warm welcome.
In fact, Abu Dhabi is an incredibly child-friendly destination where most hotels boast facilities just for little ones, with kids clubs, splash pools and kid-specific menus more common than not. As well as tons of child-specific attractions, Abu Dhabi has plenty for families to discover together. The city is also extremely safe, meaning parents can enjoy peace of mind while exploring with little ones in tow.
Is Abu Dhabi good for kids?
Abu Dhabi makes traveling with kids easy with family check-in desks at Abu Dhabi airport, baby changing facilities in most bathrooms and handy breastfeeding rooms in the city’s malls for nursing moms. Children are also welcome in most restaurants and bars, although check if there are evening restrictions if the venue serves alcohol. In fact, the only real challenge families will face in Abu Dhabi is the heat. How to beat it? Don’t come in summertime – and plan outdoor activities first thing in the morning or in early evening.
Where is best in Abu Dhabi for children?
Families trying to decide where to stay can consider Yas Island on the outskirts of the city, which is filled with theme parks galore. The waterfront Corniche is another good spot with a seemingly endless golden shoreline and plenty of nearby malls, restaurants and hotels.
The best things to do in Abu Dhabi with babies and toddlers
Go vegetable picking at mazara farm.
It may be the desert, but that doesn’t mean things don’t grow in Abu Dhabi, and a visit to Mazaraa Farm proves exactly that. The UAE’s first certified organic farm is perfect for little ones to try vegetable picking and to meet goats, donkeys, rabbits, horses and camels. Afterwards, enjoy refreshments in the farm’s boho-style cafe.
Spend the morning at Umm Al Emarat Park
One of the oldest green spaces in the city, Umm Al Emarat Park has a blooming botanical garden, water fountains and a music garden – where children can bang around on glockenspiels and bongos. On warmer days, make a beeline to the three-floored Shade House, which boasts brilliant views of the park and beyond. There are plenty of cafes and food trucks inside the park for when little ones get peckish.
Soak in culture at Manarat Al Saadiyat
Museums and galleries may not be traditionally baby-friendly, but there’s no reason to miss out on culture because you have kids in tow. Manarat Al Saadiyat hosts a revolving calendar of painting, photography and cinema exhibitions, and has a permanent outdoor space with a street-art-adorned skate park. The adjacent garden boasts six colorful public artworks and is a great place for kids to burn off some steam. Larte – a contemporary Italian eatery – is also located here, and has a bambino menu for kids and happy hour every weekday for the adults.
Best things to do in Abu Dhabi with kids
Visit the sheikh zayed grand mosque.
Sparkling crystal chandeliers, mirror-like pools and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet await in the 22,400-sq-meter (241,111-sq-ft) Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque , Abu Dhabi’s most famous landmark. Free to visit, it’s a great learning opportunity for the whole family and complimentary tours will answer anything you ever wanted to know about the Islamic faith and Emirati culture. Unsurprisingly for the UAE, you reach and depart the mosque via a shopping mall which means there’s plenty of coffee shops around to rehydrate after your visit – no food or water is allowed inside the mosque.
Speed through the mangroves on a Rhino boat
Home to thousands of mangrove trees and over 60 bird species, the Mangrove National Park is Abu Dhabi’s most impressive natural asset. Head out on the water on specially modified speed boats known as Rhino Riders and keep your eyes peeled for flamingoes, herons and turtles. A stop at a private sandy island and a dip in the water wrap up this fun experience that’s open to everyone aged three and older.
Get to grips with art at Louvre Abu Dhabi
France’s largest overseas cultural project can be found at Louvre Abu Dhabi . Fantastical architecture and a light-filled central dome house an impressive permanent collection. It’s also where travelers can find the Children’s Museum , the capital’s only child-specific museum. Here, little visitors get the chance to experience art through immersive workshops and activities. Aptitude Café is a good pick for refreshments afterwards, where the sunset views almost make up for the steep prices.
Best things to do in Abu Dhabi with teenagers and tweenagers
Explore yas island’s theme parks.
Yas Island is theme park central and a funnel of fun for kids of all ages. Ride the world’s fastest roller coaster at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi , or cool down at Yas Waterworld , where there are rides, slides and rapids galore. Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi , the world’s largest indoor theme park, is also here and has captivating themed “worlds” including Bedrock for littles, Cartoon Network for kids and Gotham City for teens.
Visit Abu Dhabi Falcon hospital
Specializing in the care of the UAE’s national bird, Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital welcomes visitors (aged five and over) wanting to find out more about these storied creatures. A two-hour tour explains the significance of falcons in traditional Bedouin culture and kids can watch the birds getting their talons trimmed and flying through an open aviary. If you’re lucky, you might even get to watch a bird surgery take place.
Get adventurous at Hudayriyat Island
Connected to Abu Dhabi via a huge suspension bridge, Hudayriyat Island is the place for outdoor adventures. With cycling and jogging tracks, sports courts, golden beaches and endless crystal-clear waters, teens can also show off their skills in the skate park, head out on the ocean via a Jet Ski, whizz across a mountain bike trail or tackle the largest permanent obstacle course in the UAE. Younger siblings will love the pirate-themed Splash & Climb park and there’s a host of cafes here, making it easy to find a place to dine for even the fussiest eaters.
Planning tips for traveling with children in Abu Dhabi
Have a chat with your kids to educate them about the UAE’s Muslim culture, especially if you plan to visit the Grand Mosque. Children are welcome here but it’s not appropriate for them to run around and make loud noises. This might not seem ideal but learning about the expectations of other cultures is a critical part of travel.
The Entertainer discount app might be worth purchasing if you plan to do lots of sightseeing as it’s filled with two-for-one offers to the city’s attractions, restaurants and leisure offerings.

World's biggest R&D vertical farm opens in Abu Dhabi to seed the future of food
Aerofarms agx will develop crops that are more resilient to extreme conditions, world's biggest r&d vertical farm opens in abu dhabi.
Eighteen months after breaking ground in Abu Dhabi, US vertical farming company AeroFarms has opened its 6,000 square-metre research and development centre, the largest of its kind in the world, with the aim of advancing sustainable agriculture in arid climates.
UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment Mariam Almheiri called the opening a great achievement for the region, noting that 80 per cent of the nation's food is imported and less than five per cent of land is suitable for farming.
Advancing indoor vertical farming, which relies on precise environmental control systems, less water and none of the pesticides used in traditional farming, could transform the region's potential as an agricultural producer.
AeroFarms AgX, the New Jersey company's wholly owned subsidiary in the UAE, is part of a group of four AgTech ventures to share in a $150 million investment from Abu Dhabi Investment Office (Adio), announced in April 2020, to bring cutting-edge research to the capital to improve food security.
AeroFarms' partnership with Adio "reflects our bigger commitment ... to commercialise new products for the region and the world,” David Rosenberg, the co-founder and chief executive of AeroFarms, said.
"There are few parts of the world where there's the belief of 'we can do anything'," he told The National at the time of the project's announcement .
"In the UAE, you have boldness of 'let's do it bigger, better' and that was very attractive to us."
Abu Dhabi has invested tens of millions of dollars into AgTech start-ups with a focus on technology-based solutions to boost food production, including automation, robotics and novel approaches to greenhouse and vertical farming.
The UAE announced a national food security strategy in 2018 and is doubling down on its sustainability efforts as it prepares to host Cop28 later this year.
The new AeroFarms AgX R&D centre will employ over 60 engineers, horticulturists, and scientists to staff the laboratories conducting research into genetically modified crops and automated growing practices.
The company also said it plans to develop machine learning and robotics at the site with the aim of increasing food yields and reducing the resources needed to grow produce.
The plan is to partner with local companies and universities on research projects to tackle problems of agriculture within desert and arid climates.
AeroFarms AgX announced its first local partnership agreement with Abu Dhabi AgTech firm Silal, an ADQ-owned company. The partnership will focus on R&D to commercialise crops like tomatoes and peppers.
Salmeen Alameri, chief executive of Silal, said its collaboration with AeroFarms marks a milestone towards developing more effective long-term agriculture practices in Abu Dhabi.
AeroFarms is a 19-year-old company that sells a variety of greens in some of the biggest US retailers including Walmart and Amazon-owned Whole Foods.
In 2021, AeroFarms said it was scrapping plans to go public via a special purpose acquisition company, saying it was not in the interest of shareholders to do so.
