Went to get gas on my way home from work. I put my card in at the pump and went through the process only for it to cancel my transaction; not once but twice. Went inside the store and it declined my card in there. The cashier informed me that there was a hold placed on my card when the transaction cancelled at the pump. Therefore I walked away without being able to get gas. Get your pumps fixed or upgraded so that this kind of thing stops happening to customers. It is frustrating and quite annoying. It made me remember why I haven't purchased gas there in awhile.

Baskin Robbins offers fresh start for fired Foster Freeze workers in Lemoore

LEMOORE, Calif. (FOX26) — Last week, employees in Lemoore were blindsided when their boss abruptly fired them all from Foster Freeze the day California's fast food workers' minimum wage went up.

Now, another ice cream shop is popping up in the same area and offering former employees an opportunity to work there.

A new location for Baskin Robbins is opening up at the end of May.

After seeing our original story, the owner contacted FOX26, hoping he could offer some help to those currently looking for a job.

Just one week ago, many of the employees thought their boss was playing an April Fools Joke until they were handed their last check.

"It's all over Tiktok. I did an interview for Fox Business the bottom line too," said the former Assistant Manager, Monica Navarro. "So it's definitely been everywhere I've been so, so blessed to see all the feedback from people, a whole bunch of people reaching out, a whole bunch of people offering support. So it's really cool to see a lot of people come together for little Lemoore."

And thousands of people across the country started reaching out to the former employees.

"It makes me feel really good, especially because we closed so abruptly and we lost our jobs so abruptly," said Navarro. "It gives us a lot more support. And I guess it makes us feel a little bit more helped."

Among those offering hope: the owner of a Baskin Robbins, opening a block away from the now-closed fosters freeze in Lemoore.

"It's really good news. As soon as I told them, I had a whole bunch of people respond to me and be like, how do we find more info about this?" said Navarro. "A lot of my coworkers have been having a hard time finding a job because a lot of people aren't exactly hiring or they don't ask. They don't open up applications that often, so it's really good news.

Other former employees even said they need a job as soon as possible.

"Dire. I'm gonna lose my house," said Vance Bookout. "I've applied to Dutch Bros. I have an interview at Save Mart tomorrow. I've applied to Fast Trip. I've applied to places in Hanford. I've applied in Riverdale."

Navarro says even in these tough times, it helps to have light at the end of the tunnel.

"Hopefully, my employees can come to a place that is more welcoming and has their back a little bit more," she said.

These aren't the only casualties of the recent fast-food minimum wage hike.

Excalibur Pizza, a franchisee of Round Table Pizza, has plans to cut 73 driver jobs in April, which amounts to 21% of its workforce.

Lemoore Foster's Freeze shuts down as CA minimum wage rises

LEMOORE, Calif. (KFSN) -- Monday, as California's minimum wage for fast food workers rose to $20 an hour, the Foster's Freeze in Lemoore permanently closed.

The assistant general manager, Monica Navarro, told Action News it was because of the wage increase, saying the owner told her he could not afford the new salaries.

Some of the employees thought it was an April Fool's Day joke.

Economic experts have been predicting closures and layoffs in the months leading up to the hike.

"Most of the time, if not all of the time, the business owners have to pass those cost increase onto the consumer," said Rich Mostert, director of the Small Business Development Center at Clovis Community College.

"The owner had actually talked to us like he was preparing to pay us $20 an hour. Like it wasn't a possibility of us closing. He said, 'Alright, on the schedules, we're going to run smaller crews. We're going to do smaller shifts, but we'll be able to make it work. We're going to raise some prices but we're good," said Navarro.

That all changed Monday morning.

Action News called the owner to ask him about the closure. He has not responded yet.

Employees at Fosters Freeze in Lemoore are out of a job.

Assistant General Manager Monica Navarro says she was called Monday morning by her boss who was at the restaurant to open, only to find the locks were being changed.

Navarro said she thought it was an April Fools joke.

"I was so caught off guard. We had no type of notice, no type of warning either. I mean the owner had told me happy easter," she said.

And she wasn't the only one. 

"We had gotten a text in the group chat that we were shutting down, and I completely thought it was an April Fools joke," said former employee Jason Boado.

After learning it was real, she drove to the restaurant on Hanford Armona Rd, where the owner was handing out final paychecks.

Navarro says the owner, Loren Wright, had previously told her the $20 minimum wage increase for fast food workers was going to be really hard on him.

She said he did not tell her or any of the other workers that he was going to close.

"I walked in, and he had just immediately said you guys are out of a job; I'm sorry," said Boado.

Navarro says she started working three years ago and worked her way up to assistant GM.

She is a full-time student at Fresno State and was planning to work there until graduation.

She was excited about the wage increase and felt like she was stabbed in the back for not getting any kind of notice.

"Please be nice to your fast food workers," said Navarro. "They're going to be getting their hours severely cut running small, small shifts. They're going to have people yelling at them for the menu increases."

Restaurant owners have been preparing for the hit by warning of reduced hours, laying off workers, and even replacing them with automation.

In a text from Loren Wright, he stated that he couldn't survive the mandated wage increases:

I tried to the end to try to figure out a way to make it work. Last thing I ever wanted was to close down," he said. "By Friday night I knew I was most likely not gonna be able to stay open but I didn't want to ruin their Easter Sunday. Small businesses can't survive a 120% plus min wage increase over the last 10 years. We are all more broke than we were 10 years ago its clear raising min wage isn't helping....I am sad to see my employees off, and sad to see lemoore off. This location has been in business for 35+ years and lemoore has been such a good place. It's painful to realize that raising min wage and regulating fast foods are putting people put if business but that is the path california leadership has taken. Thank u to my staff for everything and thank u lemoore for all the support over the years."

"Now they're getting laid off. They're losing their jobs," restaurant owner Angela Marsden told Fox News host Dana Perino . "Gavin Newsom, I hope the United States is watching. I hope he never becomes president. This man is destroying California. I don't understand why people can't see that he's the biggest trickster of all time."

“The implementation of this bill will have serious consequences for both small business owners and employees,” said Caucus Chair Kelly Seyarto (R-Murrieta). “We need to enable our small businesses to be successful and create jobs in California. This bill does just the opposite and furthers California’s inflation woes.”

“It’s already too difficult for families to be able to afford this state,” said Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh (R-Yucaipa). “What we need to be doing is working to lower living costs and increase opportunities for growth, not the other way around.” 

“As a small-business owner, I know that doing business in California is becoming increasingly difficult,” said Senator Brian Dahle (R-Bieber). “This was a big win for the labor bosses, but in reality, it hurts those trying to achieve economic mobility. This law will force businesses to reduce their employees' hours, automate services, or opt to do business in another state. It's unfortunate that labor activists are destroying California's economy and the entrepreneurial spirit that has always been a part of our state.”

Another California small business and its workers have seemingly suffered at the hands of the state’s newly enacted $20 minimum wage.

“It’s a shock,” Monica Navarro, former assistant general manager at Fosters Freeze in Lemoore, said Wednesday on “The Bottom Line.”

“It would have been nice to have a notice, so we could go get some applications [out], I could prepare them,” she continued. “The best I can do is honestly give them some references.”

When making their way to work Monday morning, Navarro and her team learned upon arrival that the restaurant owner had made the decision to close its doors for good.

The owner, Loren Wright, told local Fox affiliate KMPH that this was the “last thing” they wanted to do, but knew by Friday night the business likely wouldn’t be able to absorb the wage hike and didn’t “want to ruin their Easter Sunday.”

The new California statewide legislation went into effect Monday and enforces a $20 minimum wage for restaurants that have at least 60 locations nationwide, except those that make and sell their own bread.

“Two of my coworkers were actually going in to clock-in for the morning. And right after that, that’s when I got a phone call that we were closing. So they found out right as they were about to clock-in for the day,” Navarro recalled.

“We had gotten a text in the group chat that we were shutting down, and I completely thought it was an April Fool’s joke,” one of Navarro’s colleagues also told KMPH.

After speaking further with management and Fosters Freeze’s owner, Navarro learned that the minimum wage law was the primary factor in the restaurant’s demise.

“He did blame it on the minimum wage increase. Although, from my understanding, I think we were exempt from it because of the amount of locations that he personally owns. But, he did ultimately blame it on that increase,” she said.

“I can see their intentions with increasing the minimum wage, thinking that it will attract more people,” the ex-manager added, “but I honestly don’t think it will work. This is not the first business that’s closing. There’s already a few local businesses for me that are closing, so I feel like this is just only the beginning.”

Speaking on behalf of the now unemployed Fosters Freeze team, Navarro claimed they would have preferred working at a lower hourly rate than being laid off.

“From the people that I spoke to, my employees, we would have rather stayed at the wage that we did have before, just because now we don’t have a job,” Navarro said. “And those who are still working in the areas around us that went up to $20 an hour, they got their hours severely cut. And it’s a lot less people working on shifts. So their jobs got a lot more difficult.”
