Folsom Lake Pontoon Rentals

Life is better on the water.

2024 RESERVATIONS ARE NOW OPEN!!

MAY 1ST IS OUR OFFICIAL START DATE. HOWEVER, IF YOU WOULD LIKE AN EARLIER DATE SHOOT US A CALL OR TEXT AND WE WILL SEE WHAT WE CAN DO.

Renting a pontoon boat is a great way to enjoy a day on Folsom Lake and Folsom Lake Marina Rentals makes it easy. Our boats are available 7 days a week (weekdays are much less crowded) and we do our best to make the rental process quick and convenient.

All our rentals leave from the floating office at Folsom Lake Marina in El Dorado Hills at Brown's Ravine State Park entrance. Our boats are in the water and ready for an easy check-out and check-in. You will leave the dock with a full tank of fuel and will only be responsible for the fuel you use. Our boats all have bimini tops, stereos, lounge seating and more.

We only offer pontoon boat rentals, we do not offer ski boats, fishing boats or Jet Ski rentals.

Folsom Lake is located in the foothills at the base of the Sierras and is just a short drive from Sacramento. Folsom Lake State Recreational Area offers boating, water sports, camping, hiking trails, equestrian trails and biking trails. For your convenience, our Folsom Lake Marina home page offers links to many of these amenities.

Notice:  Marina staff are available to captain your rental to and from a cove of your liking. Folsom Lake can get quite windy and quite busy. Be safe and have an enjoyable experience.

Top 5 Things To Do at Folsom Lake

Get in touch with nature at Folsom Lake.

Folsom Lake and the surrounding beaches, trails, and campgrounds come together to form what is known as Folsom Lake State Recreation Area. This multi-use park can be found at the base of the Sierra foothills, about 25 miles east of Sacramento. Folsom Lake has endless opportunities for outdoor fun, but we’ve narrowed down our top five things to do here:

1. Have a Picnic

Pack a lunch and bring your family or friends to Folsom Lake for a picnic! There are two group picnic sites at Granite Bay Main Beach available for reservation , or you could opt to bring a cozy blanket and relax anywhere you’d like, in true picnic style. The reservable picnic sites are open year-round, and they include 11 picnic tables, 1 large BBQ station, nearby bathrooms, and 2 water faucets. During the summer, Folsom Lake also has several food concessions at Granite Bay, Beal's Point and Brown's Ravine Marina Store, so you can always grab your lunch there instead of packing one.

2. Get Some Exercise

Folsom Lake is a paradise for those looking to break a sweat outdoors. Whether you prefer biking, hiking, or jogging, you’ll find that there’s something for everyone within the 95 total miles of trail here. Cyclists in particular will enjoy the 32-mile bicycle path that extends beyond Folsom Lake and connects to several Sacramento County parks, eventually ending up in Old Sacramento. Some of the other popular trails are Avery’s Pond, Lake Natoma Trail, Folsom Trail, and Johnny Cash Trail.

3. Spend a Day on the Water

The best part about Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is, of course, the 11,500 acre lake it surrounds. If you’re looking to get out on the water, there are plenty of options- the park offers boat , kayak, jet ski, water ski, and paddleboard rentals. For a more relaxed atmosphere, head downstream to Lake Natoma, which is mainly used for non-motorized water recreation. The 5 MPH speed limit here makes this spot ideal for rowing and paddleboarding. Swimmers should go to the Granite Bay swim area, where there is a lifeguard on duty during the summer.

4. Go Horseback Riding

Something a bit unique about Folsom Lake is the opportunity to go horseback riding along the paths! Experience the park from a different perspective and book a guided horseback ride with professionally trained horses. On this adventure, you’ll leave the barn and head up Mooney Ridge, through the forest, and along Folsom Lake during the two hour ride.

5. Stay the Night at a Campground

There are four official campgrounds at Folsom Lake: Peninsula Campground, Beals Point Campground, Negro Bar Campsites, and Avery’s Pond Environmental Campsites. Each one has their own set of amenities and rules, which you can read about here . If you really want to test your nature wits, spend the day fishing on Folsom Lake, then cook up your winnings for a delicious campsite dinner. The lake is known for its populations of bass, rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, and catfish.

Folsom Lake State Recreation Area can be accessed via either Highway 50 or I-80, and there are multiple park entrances at both Folsom Lake and Lake Natoma. For even more outdoor activities in Rancho Cordova, click here.

Folsom Lake

Folsom Lake

We are your rental center for Folsom Lake boat rentals and watercraft services located at the base of the Sierra foothills.  Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is home to an 17,000-acre lake with opportunities for boating, biking, running, camping, wakeboarding, wakesurfing, water-skiing and jet ski rentals.  Types of fish include trout, catfish, big and small mouth bass or perch which are a great catch during all seasons.  Folsom Lake is a reservoir in Northern California about 24 miles northeast of Sacramento in Placer, El Dorado, and Sacramento Counties.  The lake is formed by Folsom Dam, constructed in 1955 to control the American River.  The Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

There are three campgrounds at the lake — Beal’s Point and Peninsula campgrounds which are located on Folsom Lake and Negro Bar campground at Lake Natoma.  Beal’s Point and Negro Bar are developed campgrounds and have all the amenities; Beal’s Point is open year round.  Peninsula is a remote campground so call and make sure it’s open.  We always recommend that you reserve you boat and or campground in advance to make sure there is availability.

For pedal bikers, there is a 32-mile long bicycle path that connects Folsom Lake with many Sacramento County parks before reaching Old Sacramento.  The park also includes Lake Natoma, downstream from Folsom Lake, which is popular for crew races, sailing, kayaking, parties, and other aquatic sports.  Enjoy our premier watercraft rentals and tour services at all lakes in beautiful California.

Folsom Lake

The lake is formed by Folsom Dam, constructed in 1955 to control the American River. The Folsom Lake State Recreation Area marina, resort, and launch ramp is managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation.  There are three campgrounds at the lake -- Beal's Point and Peninsula campgrounds which are located on Folsom Lake and Negro Bar campground at Lake Natoma.  Beal's Point and Negro Bar are developed campgrounds and have all the amenities; Beal's Point is open year round.   Peninsula is a remote campground so call and make sure it's open. We always recommend that you reserve you boat and or campground in advance to make sure there is availability.

Boating at Folsom Lake State Recreational Area

Updated: Apr 12, 2022

Folsom Lake State Recreational Area is just a short drive east of Sacramento. The lake lies in the beautiful Sierra foothills and offers a wide range of activities. Hiking, camping, horseback riding, and especially boating are all very popular. The Folsom Lake boating scene is very active and welcoming to both locals and visitors alike.

Folsom Lak

Marina, Facilities, And Fees

The Folsom Lake Marina is located at Browns Ravine located just off Green Valley road at the southern end of the lake. The marina offers two put-in ramps, restrooms, snacks, and pontoon boat rentals. There are 685 wet slips and 175 dry storage spaces at the marina, but the waiting list for both is quite long.

Additional put-in ramps are located at Folsom Point, Granite Bay, the Peninsula, and Rattlesnake Ramp.

Fees for a single boat/day use are $22 . This will allow you to bring one vehicle and one boat into the park on the date of purchase. Additional boats cost $10 each.

Boating Activities

Most types of boats and water activities are welcomed at Folsom Lake. Popular activities include:

Water skiing/wakeboarding

Windsurfing

Paddle boats and pontoon boats

Boat camping

Folsom Lake boaters are allowed to sleep overnight on board their vessels as long as they have self-contained sanitation and greywater system. Your boat must also provide sleeping accommodations for all persons aboard. There are specially designated moorings for overnight boat camping.

About Folsom Lake

Folsom Lake covers approximately 11,450 acres. There are about 75 miles of shoreline, and the maximum elevation is 466 feet. The average water temperature during the summer is a very pleasant 75 degrees, and the maximum water depth is 250 feet.

The water level at the lake varies from year to year, depending on rainfall and other factors. You can check the current water level on our watch page.

The Folsom Lake boating season reaches its peak from mid-May through mid-July. During that time, parking and launch ramps tend to be very full and visitors should expect longer wait times.

Additional Activities

Hiking, camping, and fishing are popular at Folsom Lake. If you’re looking for things to do before or after you get on the water, you’ll have plenty of choices.

Hiking - There are dozens of hiking trails to explore at the lake and nearby foothills. Make sure to carry plenty of water during the summer months to avoid dehydration.

Fishing - Fishing is popular at the lake. Anglers can expect to find trout, catfish, large and smallmouth bass, bluegill, salmon, and kokanee. A valid California fishing license is required.

SMOOTH SAILING SINCE 1956

So, if you're in the area, stop by. Because we do not have a yacht club building, there is no bar, but come out on a day we're sailing (see calendar) and say hello. There is a small fee to enter the state park, more if you're launching a boat (however, entry is free with a pass from any California public library - see story below) .

Visit Recommendations

The primary recreation season coincides with the spring and summer months when temperatures are in the 80s, 90s and 100s. Visitation is highest from April through September. In the spring months when school is still in session, evenings and weekends are the times of highest lake activity.

Climate, Recommended Clothing

Good walking shoes are a must when exploring any of the park trails. Shoes or sandals are recommended on the lake's beaches and boat ramp areas.

The Folsom Powerhouse is part of a colorful chapter of Sacramento history and is also an example of the tremendous advance in the commercial application of electricity. H.P. Livermore realized that the water of the American River could turn generators for electricity in Sacramento, 22 miles downstream. With his partners, Livermore built the powerhouse, which still looks much as it did in 1895. The opening of the powerhouse brought with it a "grand electric carnival" parade through downtown Sacramento and a 100-gun salute from a detachment of soldiers near the substation. Vintage generators are still in place at the powerhouse, as is the control switchboard, faced with Tennessee marble. Visitors touring the powerhouse can see the massive General Electric transformers, each capable of conducting from 800 to 11,000 volts of electricity, in addition to the forebays and canal system that brought the water from the dam.

Seasons/Climate/Recommended Clothing Summer and spring are warm; fall and winter can be cool. Layered clothing is advised.
