Bike tour along the German Wine Route

Day 1: Individual arrival in Neustadt

Your bike tour along the German Wine Route begins in Neustadt, which lies at the foot of the Palatinate forest. Some of the best wines come from this pretty village with its windy streets and beautifully restored historic centre. High above the town, forest and vineyards sits Hambach Castle. Ever since a huge festival in 1832 it has become symbolic with the German democratic movement. Reserved rental bicycles are parked at the hotel ready for you.

Day 2: Neustadt - Heidelberg, approx. 55 km

Cycling through idyllic wine-growing villages of the Rhine plain on vintners’ paths, you will soon reach Speyer, one of Germany’s oldest cities. Why not visit the impressive cathedral – it was once destined to be the occident’s largest church. After a stroll through Speyer’s historic centre, you continue cycling towards Schwetzingen, where we recommend you take some time exploring the large park around the castle. It truly is a masterclass in the art of gardening. When you’re in the old university city of Heidelberg, you have reached today’s final destination. Discover its beautiful castle, stroll through its narrow alleys and enjoy the vibrant cultural scene.

Heidelberg grain market

Kornmarkt with view of the castle, Heidelberg

Day 3: Heidelberg - Worms, approx. 45 km

Today you cycle to the historic town of Ladenburg. This is where the Romans once built thermal baths and theatres. The section along the Rhine levels to Worms is very pleasant to cycle. Worms cathedral, dating back to the 11th and 12 centuries, exhibits Roman features and makes a striking impression. The oldest intact Jewish cemetery in Europe is to be found in Worms.

Worms Cathedral

Day 4: Worms - Bad Dürkheim, approx. 40 km

A wonderful section of the trip along the northern wine route to Bad Dürkheim is on the agenda today. Along the route you pass Neu-Leiningen, which is located in an idyllic position on the slopes of the Palatinate forest. The silhouette of the ruined castle projects majestically over the town's skyline. We recommend doing a tour of the town walls in Freinsheim. At the east edge of the Palatinate forest you reach Bad Dürkheim.

Weinstrasse, Bad Dürkheim

Day 5: Bad Dürkheim - Neustadt, approx. 20 km

The route takes you through the wonderful landscape of the Haardt, a low mountain range in the region of Palatinate. Wine-growing villages, steeped in history, invite you to stop for a glass of wine. And we particularly recommend visiting the ruined Wachtenburg castle. From here you can stand and admire the panorama of the Rhine levels, an amazing view and the reason why it is known as the Palatinate Balcony .

German Wine Route for Cyclists – an adventure through vineyard central

We all know that cycling is wonderful for the body and soul, but let's not forget that a glass of wine is supposed to be good for our health too. The German Wine Route for Cyclists through the sun-soaked Palatinate region is a great way to enjoy many of the finer things in life.

This route takes cyclists on a tour of one of Germany's biggest wine-growing regions. Vineyards cover the countryside between the edge of the Palatinate Forest and the Rhine plain. Cyclists can take a break at a tavern or winery, where the region's finest wines are just waiting to be sampled. How about a drop of Riesling, white Burgundy or Dornfelder? They are all nicely paired with the local food, which ranges from hearty homemade dishes to gourmet cuisine. And the weather doesn't disappoint in the Palatinate either, where there are around 1,800 hours of sunshine every year. Anyone in need of a shady spot should head to the Palatinate Forest Nature Park, which is one of Germany's largest continuous areas of woodland.

On this trip there is a discount for children and people sharing a room with "two fully paying adults". The discount depends on the child’s age, as follows:

Children under 5.99 years: free of charge Children between 6 and 11.99 years: 50% discount Children between 12 - 14.99 years: 25% discount People from 15 years and up: 10% discount

Example 1 2 adults and 1 child. In this case it’s very easy because you are staying in the same room. The child will receive a discount in relation to the above prices.

Example 2 2 adults and 2 children (age 5 and 13 years old): in this case you have two options. If you want to stay in two double rooms, then we apply the full price for all participants. If you want to sleep in the same room (eg. a family room), both children will receive a discount (respectively free or 25%)

Example 3 2 adults and 3 children (age: 7, 13 and 15 years). Here you will probably need two double rooms, where the youngest child is sleeping with the parents.  Therefore, there will only be a discount for the youngest child of 7 years who will receive a 50% discount.

Example 4 3 adults who want to sleep in the same double room. Then extra adult will receive a 10% discount.

Notice On our booking form you can only choose "adults" because our website cannot calculate children's discount by itself. Therefore, you should simply enter the details of the children's age, date of birth and, if desired, the room distribution in the notification area when you book the trip. Then we arrange and adjust the price later after.

It is important that you understand that it is your own responsibility when you choose to bring your children on the trips. You should check the difficulty levels descriptions and from there, consider whether the specific trip is suitable for your child. In general, we do not recommend that children under the age of 15 participate in trips where the difficulty is over 2.

It can be hard to plan your trip according to the weather, but to give an idea of the local climate, you can see the data below: The statistics are from yr.no.

Palatinate Wine Tour – based in one hotel

Cycling leisurely through vineyards and the Rhine Valley

Cyclists in the vineyards

The Palatinate is the second-largest wine-growing region in Germany, blessed with an almost Mediterranean climate and numerous hours of sunshine. Therefore, you can even take the centre-based tour in southwestern Germany from the beginning of April to October. Every season has different surprises – like the blooming flowers in spring, mild evenings in summer and the grape harvest in autumn. By the way, wine is omnipresent on this cycling holiday, be it a wine tasting, a walk through the wine villages of Wachenheim and Deidesheim or cycle paths through the vineyards.

germany wine bike tours

The seven-day cycle tour, starting from Bad Dürkheim, leads over idyllic paths through the Palatinate. Forests, meadows and vines alternate and bring variety to the daily stages. The cycling holiday programme is just as varied. Let yourself be pampered with culinary and cultural delights – for example in Speyer, the secret German wine capital Neustadt or in Edenkoben.

  • 4-star spa hotel Bad Dürkhiem: You sleep in the former castle of Leiningen with free use of the wellness area. Enjoy the sunny hotel terrace in the evening.
  • German wine route: With 1,800 hours of sunshine a year, the climate on the German Wine Route is almost reminiscent of that of the Mediterranean countries. You can look forward to extra sunny cycling fun!
  • Wine tasting in the Fitz-Ritter winery: In the excellent winery in Bad Dürkheim you can taste five wonderful wines on the last day of your cycling holiday – included in the travel price.
  • Culture on the Rhine: Culture is not forgotten on this trip in the Palatinate. Above all the cathedral of Speyer, the French fortress Landau or the medieval castle Neuleinigen.

You spend the first day comfortably in Bad Dürkheim with the bike handover and a short walk through the old town, which is only a few steps from your hotel. The daily stages always start and end in Bad Dürkheim and are between 20 and 85 kilometres long. You cycle over hilly terrain with short climbs. In the Rhine Valley the routes are flat.

Itinerary at a glance

Tour information and bike fitting. It’s just a short walk to the old town and the beautiful spa park, which invites you to take a visit.

Today's stage is devoted to the Pfaelzer wines. The bike tour will lead you through vineyards and wine villages to the secret German wine capital Neustadt. Through the most beautiful wine villages of the Northern Wine Road, Wachenheim and Deidesheim you will cycle back to Bad Dürkheim.

First, the route runs along the river Rhine. Following the Old Rhine arms you will soon reach the old imperial city of Speyer. The Cathedral and the art museum should be visited in any case before you will cycle through the Böhler forest and on the Kaiser Konrad bike trail back to your hotel. You can also go by train from Speyer back to Bad Dürkheim (optional).

Also on today's stage you will find many romantic wine villages on the way. St. Martin is like a picture book town and Edenkoben even was a summer residence of Bavarian kings! Romantic in this area is also the wine road leading up to the French fortress of Landau. Return journey by train on your own (costs about € 10, - including bike).

After a short bike ride, you will soon reach Freinsheim with its baroque town hall. Then you will continue via the winery town of Grünstadt to the medieval castle Neuleinigen. The ones who want to cycle up the slope to the castle can then strengthen themselves again in the castle tavern and enjoy magnificent views. The tour will continue through the vineyards and back to Bad Dürkheim.

On the last day of cycling, the local wineries are on the agenda. Not only the biggest wine barrel in the world is an attraction, also the view is spectacular and many a cosy place invites you to stay. Back in Bad Dürkheim, we have already organized a wine tasting event for you at the winery Fitz-Ritter.

Winery Tour on the Rhine

Great hotels, the GPS track was enormously helpful and overall it was a great trip. Bikes and equipment all good. We did miss our third wine tasting mainly as we assumed it was at the end of the day like the others, only to find it was 20 k back . Beautiful route.

Germany is diverse and varied, also when it comes to its culture and language or dialects: listen to Low German on your cycle tour through the north, it has been recognised as a language in its own right and included in the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages. In Bavaria you will encounter Franconian and Bavarian dialects, yo mei. Perhaps you'd like to babble Hessian , chat Swabian or experience a real Berliner Schnauze, eh? Et kütt, wie et kütt, they say in Kölsch. So let's see what regional specialities you will discover, because there are not only linguistic but also cultural differences.

The diversity is hard to beat: Fans of a stiff breeze cycle along the North Sea and Baltic Sea . You'll discover moorland on the Fehnroute in East Frisia , forests in the Black Forest, which is actually rather dark green. There are countless rivers in Germany along which cycle paths lead. Do you like to have a view of the mountains? Then head for the Harz mountains or Bavaria and the edge of the Alps. Almost all regions have nature parks or even national parks where you can find out about the special features of the respective natural areas. Do you prefer lugworms or wolves? It's all there. Wine and cuisine tours

Some are in it for the cycling. And some of us are in it for the food and drink (meaning we cycle so we can eat and drink). But, it’s easy to enjoy both worlds on our popular tours with a wine or cuisine focus.

These tours typically feature cycling each day, but also have a focus on the local flavors (and their producers!) of a region. For example, you might bike through the vineyards of Burgundy or Champagne, stopping to sample the wines on each estate. Or, you might cycle in Tuscany, and take cooking courses along the route.

Check out some of our favorite options below for wine-lovers, for foodies, and for both!

For wine lovers

Picture yourself cycling in a landscape of endless vineyards, riding at a leisurely pace between stops at local wine producers for tastings and cellar tours. Chat with winemakers about the stories behind their varietals. Order a case of your favorite to be shipped home, arriving later on your doorstep like a tasty postcard — the perfect reason to share memories and photos from your trip over a bottle shared among friends.

Available as guided or self-guided, you’ll spend each night in castles, palaces, and farmhouses transformed into unique lodgings. The cycling features scenic rolling landscape with vineyards, olive groves, and cork oaks. Tour details >

For foodies

Cycling and Cooking in Tuscany This popular Tuscany tour combines fantastic bicycle routes and cooking lessons, all in Italy’s famous region of Tuscany. After you have worked up an appetite biking through the rolling landscape of Tuscany, you will cook and eat the best food! Cyclists will explore loop rides in beautiful Val d’orcia, passing such highlights as Pienza, Montalcino, and San Quirico. The routes cross Val di Chiana, through Cortona to Crete Senesi, and on to Siena. Tour details >

Viking trails to vineyard tours: 10 of the best cycle routes in Denmark

Freewheel around Scandinavia’s capital of cycling and discover the greenest way to see Denmark

Denmark is a haven for cyclists of all abilities, with 11,000km of marked cycle routes to ride. From adventurous cycling on multi-day trips that take in the country’s most varied scenery, to day trips and wine tours, these are the country’s best bike routes for everyone, from hobbyists to expert-level athletes. To make it extra easy, accommodation options line the routes, including simple campsites and shelters , run by the Danish Nature Agency and offered for free or almost free, as well as B&Bs and hotels especially set up for cyclists, with bike rooms, e-bike charging stations and rooms made available for fixing your bike as you go. Aktiv Danmark has a list of bike-friendly accommodation and there is also a group of Danish Bike Hotels that have bike facilities. Bike rental is available in major cities and towns all over the country.

The Harbour Circle Start in Denmark’s capital with this 13km cycling route around the main harbour. It’s easy to fit into a short break, and takes in Copenhagen’s harbour swimming spots, waterside wine bars such as Rosforth & Rosforth , major attractions such as the colourful Nyhavn waterfront, and off-the-beaten-track treasures such as Cafe Slusen , where you can eat sardines from the tin and sip beer with a calm view of the entire harbour.

People hanging out at Hasle Harbour Bath

Bornholm by bike The sunny island of Bornholm has 230km of signposted cycle routes . Follow the dark green signs down quiet lanes to harbours awash with ice-cream shops, and past smokehouses where you can snack on just-smoked fish. Weave in and out of dappled patches of sunshine under the trees, watch out for hares and pheasants in the fields, and enjoy the quieter pace of life.

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route Denmark’s longest cycle route – all 820km of it – encompasses islands and ferries, sheltered bays and seafaring ports as it traces the Baltic Sea coast. It breaks down into 14 stages, the pick of which are sections 10 and 11, which hug the coast. You’ll enjoy views of the islands of southern Funen and – if you’re lucky – the sight of porpoises.

2. STUB Vinyaard& Vintårn on the island of Røsnæs

The Rosnæs peninsula wineries Pop your bike on a train and travel roughly two and a half hours west of Copenhagen to find a winery route made for cyclists. On the Rosnæs peninsula, among the driest and sunniest spots in the country, vines grow, grapes are pressed and wine tours by bike are the thing to do. Starting at Stub Vingård , a 16km trail runs to Rosnæs Vingård through a green landscape carved by the last ice age, taking in the Barfod and Dyrehøj wineries along the way.

The Ancient Road This destination is more than a cycle route: it’s a path through Denmark’s history. Also called Hærvejen , it’s one of the most atmospheric trails in the country, taking in heathlands and rivers, along with key Danish historical sites. Discover the Viking Jelling stone and the 3,000-year-old burial site of the Egtved Girl. There are dolmen and further burial mounds on a route that has been used for centuries.

The West Coast Route Running from Skagen all the way down the west coast to Rudbøl, this route offers some of the best views of Denmark’s contrasting scenery. Mostly paved and always signposted, the route skirts the gloriously wild dune landscape of Thy National Park, golden-sand beaches and the bird-filled marshes of the Wadden Sea National Park on its 560km journey.

A Danish father and son standing with their bikes on a summer day amidst trees on the island of Mors in Denmark with the Limfjord in the background.

The Limfjord Route Another long route – this time 610km – the journey around the Limfjord in North Jutland is broken into stages and winds around the fjord from Aalborg, via ferries and bridges. There are plenty of restaurants along the way, giving you the chance to enjoy the region’s local oysters.

Berlin-Copenhagen Two lively cities with a sea between them and a shared love of cycling unite via this 630km route . The tour skirts the white cliffs of Møn and the flower-filled meadows of Falster on the way to the ferry to Germany.

The Fjord Path Half an hour west of Copenhagen, the journey around the Isefjord and Roskilde fjord begins. It’s rich with Viking history, and nature, running through forests and fields as well as on tarmacked roads. Look out for Thomas Dambo’s trolls on the way – there is a hidden one in a quarry nearby – and expect to spend a week or more exploring the full 275km route (or take it in sections). Bike hire is available in Roskilde.

The Border Route Cycle from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea while crisscrossing Denmark’s border with Germany and uncover a world of history along the way. The old marsh town of Højer in Denmark marks the start of the 130km route , with the finish line in Flensburg, Germany. It’s a wonderfully flat journey, with orchards and meadows alongside it. The land on both sides of the border has changed nationalities multiple times in the last few hundred years.
