New $2 Billion Resort Project Launches in the Caribbean

A new resort project in Grenada, which represents a roughly $2 billion hotel investment, has launched construction, Caribbean Journal Invest has learned.

In a recent interview with Cathyann Alexander-Pierre, senior specialist for the Grenada Investment Development Corporation, CJI was told that the main hotel highlight of what’s for now called the “Grenada National Resort Project” involves the development of a 500-room, five-star property and international golf course.

To date, more than $70 million has been invested in the acquisition of the property. Preliminary work included feasibility studies, surveys, site preparation and ongoing construction, said Alexander-Pierre.

“Grenada offers fantastic opportunities for the development of luxury products at some of the most picturesque sites around the island,” said Alexander-Pierre.

Alexander-Pierre said other amenities of the project will include a casino, an amusement park, duty-free shops and a turtle museum.

“Grenada is an unspoilt, under-the-radar destination that creates the feeling of exclusivity for luxury developers,” said Alexander-Pierre. “They want to give their clients something of the highest quality, which is authentic and not easily duplicated.”

The construction of this facility is expected to create employment for more than 500 Grenadians within the parish of St. Patrick, said Alexander-Pierre. She said 135 of those jobs are already operational.

Once the project is fully operational, she said 500 to 800 permanent jobs will be created for locals.

She said she doesn’t expect the pandemic to influence the timeline of the resort, so long as Grenada keeps up its successful efforts to contain the illness.

“Grenada has managed the pandemic well by implementing internationally recognized health and safety protocols to safeguard residents, visitors and investors,” she told CJI. “We maintain low numbers and our efforts have been praised by the international community. Investors have also commended our efforts, expressing that they feel safe in Grenada.”

The project is the largest in what is a burgeoning hotel pipeline in Grenada .

Unlocking sustainable tourism: grenada to welcome a diverse lineup of industry leaders at cto’s sustainable tourism conference.

GRENADA (April 21, 2024) – The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), in partnership with the Grenada Tourism Authority, has curated a dynamic lineup of industry leaders and development partners for its Sustainable Tourism Conference (STC 2024). The gathering aims to explore new strategies for enhancing sustainable tourism amidst evolving global challenges.

Slated for April 22-24, 2024, and centered around the theme The 5 Ps – People, Planet, Prosperity, Purpose and Partnership, the event brings together experts who will discuss creating innovative tourism experiences that capitalize on the Caribbean’s rich natural and cultural resources and presents strategies and best practice solutions to benefit from emerging opportunities and address sustainable tourism challenges.

Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman of Sandals Resorts International and a renowned leader in sustainable tourism, will deliver the keynote address on April 22. His remarks are expected to inspire a series of productive discussions on building a resilient and responsible tourism infrastructure in the region.

Only Haiti; a one day Prime Minister stripped as Council voting deemed illegal

The efforts to restore Haiti have birthed concerns as corrupt actions within the Presidential Council have been unveiled in shocking revelations surrounding the appointment of the nation’s new Prime Minister and the council’s president, voted in on Tuesday April 30, 2024, against the stipulations within the political accord. This has caused tensions among the members of the Council which could lead to disintegration.

The week of April 29, 2024 started with anticipation for the naming of the Prime Minister on April 30, and by the end of the day, the region and world was given great news that Haiti now has a new Prime Minister, Fritz Bélizaire. Also, the Council’s president was named Edgard LeBlanc Fils.

But, on May 1st, news of conflict within the council made headlines and it turns out Bélizaire and LeBlanc Fils were voted in on the decision of only four of seven council members with voting rights.

The remaining members who were supposed to be a part of the decision making by law, under the accords, were left out of the loop. In fact, the quartet has taken on an identity, reportedly calling itself “The Indissoluble Majority” and the Miami Herald informs that a document was released, leaked, which contains the names of the four council members who are Smith Augustin, Louis Gérald Gilles, Emmanuel Vertilaire and LeBlanc.

The vote was taken overnight. Not all of the Council members were present. How their election came to be accepted and then broadcast to the world is worthy of investigation and given the investment of so many countries, to right Haiti’s rickety ship, demands a decent investigation.

Haiti’s political process is fraught with corruption. The development is embarrassing, a significant setback but no surprise.

Regarding the unlawful voting process, an unidentified individual with direct intel, told media that the Council’s political agreement was violated due to how the voting was carried out. It was expected to be a collective decision, as the Accords negotiated and ratified unequivocally stipulate; the design is and has always been to come to a middle ground. No time in recent history have the stakes for Haiti been so high and the need for transparency and honest integrity to be unflinching. Yet, at least four of these members have reportedly disgraced the process and will likely be replaced as the vote is re-executed.

A Wednesday statement to the media has confirmed as much.

It is expected that now, the positions for Prime Minister and the President (of the Council) will be reopened and new members appointed to the council.

In his greeting, Dr. Michael Cheng, dean of the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism expressed his joy in celebrating with the team members. Students for cohort B were recruited from Sandals Resorts across St. Lucia, Antigua, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Barbados and Grenada. Cohorts C and D will commence in April and May respectively, and the SCU anticipates that by the end of 2024, five cohorts will earn their diplomas.

To close out the evening on an inspiring note, Sandals Grenada’s Spa Manager, and valedictorian for Cohort B Melissa Migliavacca, took the time in her address to motivate her colleagues as they look towards the future. She said passionately, “it took discipline, dedication and focus as well as effective time management for us to follow through. There were times that we stumbled upon obstacles but giving up was not an option. Lisa Nichols says, that in this life we can choose to be a victim or a victor, the choice is always ours. I’m so glad we’re all standing victorious today because we made the choice to be brave and sign up for this programme and we saw it through to the end.” She concluded by encouraging her colleagues to pay it forward when they return to their operations by helping train team members and cultivating a standard of excellence.

The Diploma in Hospitality Leadership Programme is a six-month long interactive course leveraging workshops, discussion groups, case studies and industry best-practices.  Entry and mid-level managers are challenged to apply new knowledge, gain advanced skills and create positive behaviours as they prepare for the future and continuous achievement of excellence in the industry.

To address this concern, this chapter provides a snapshot of the progress that has been made on sustainable tourism development in the Caribbean region. There is now more demand from the traveling public for industries to be environmentally friendly and in order to continue to use tourism as a means of economic advancement, sustainable practices must be adopted. The evidence suggests that there are great economic, sociocultural, and environmental impacts of tourism in the Caribbean region that are both positive and negative. The actions of the accommodations sector are commendable but there is the need for all major stakeholders to better manage the negative impacts of tourism development. The Caribbean Tourism Organization has developed a policy framework which consists of guiding principles and integrated policies regarding sustainable tourism development, The Caribbean Sustainable Tourism Policy and Development Framework. A shock, such as COVID-19, can lead to economic collapse as communities heavily dependent on tourism have no capacity to respond to the loss of their primary revenue source. However, in order to strengthen the resilience of small island tourism development, the Caribbean region is transitioning toward community-driven solutions through innovation, employee training, upgrades, greater digitalization, and environmental sustainability.

Under the overarching theme, the conference will delve into the pivotal 5 Ps – People, Planet, Prosperity, Purpose and Partnership, with the aim of catalyzing transformative action towards a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for Caribbean tourism.

The Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development, also known as the Sustainable Tourism Conference (STC), provides a platform for meaningful engagements, networking and knowledge exchanges among Ministers of Tourism, Directors of Tourism, business executives, and other industry professionals.

The conference will feature presentations by experts, moderated panel discussions, Q&A segments, masterclasses and thematic break-out sessions. Sustainability champions and thought leaders will share insights, best practices, and innovative strategies to ensure that tourism in the Caribbean contributes positively to local communities and the environment.

Attendees can expect thought-provoking and stimulating discussions on how the 5 P’s intertwine to shape the future trajectory of Caribbean tourism.

The Sustainable Tourism Conference is one of many events in the year-long calendar of activities for Grenada’s 50th independence anniversary celebration, and coincides with the 10th anniversary of Grenada’s ‘Pure Grenada Brand’. “We are quite pleased with the experiences we’re curating in Grenada – from insightful sessions and study tours to immersive, authentic adventures across our tri-island nation,” stated Petra Roach, Chief Executive Officer of the Grenada Tourism Authority. “We eagerly look forward to showcasing the transformative impact of sustainable tourism and underscoring the importance of protecting and preserving our natural and cultural heritage for the tourism sector and future generations of Grenadians.”

The Sustainable Tourism Conference 2024 promises not only to dissect the challenges but to inspire collective action towards maintaining the delicate equilibrium required for a thriving tourism sector.

Discussions will shed light on sustainability frameworks and strategies to address urgent matters such as climate risk, waste reduction, and bridging the digital divide to optimize the use of technological innovations for people empowerment, to preserve the environment, and contribute to both business and destination competitiveness and resilience.

The Conference returns after a 4-year hiatus since the Covid Pandemic and forms part of regional activities marking Earth Day, celebrated on April 22.

The Sustainable Tourism Conference attracts representatives from national, regional, and international organizations, sustainable development partners, academia, students, and media from North America, the U.K., Europe, and the Caribbean. In addition to the plenary sessions, the conference includes experiential field trips (study tours), various networking events, and culminates with the presentation ceremony for CTO’s Sustainable Tourism Awards. Pre- and post-destination tours are optional activities which are offered as part of the conference experience.

The St. John’s Development Corporation (SJDC) was established in 1986 by an Act of Parliament. SJDC is a statutory body responsible for the enhancement and orderly development of the city of St. John’s in the island state of Antigua and Barbuda. 

The mandate of the Corporation is to “ guide the implementation of a program for the renewal and modernization of the City of St. John’s considering its cultural and architectural history ”. As well as to “ enhance the infrastructure, particularly the tourism infrastructure within the designated area. ” 

The St. John’s Development Corporation Act 1986 Cap. 392 sets out the purpose, role, and functions of the Corporation. The Corporation is governed by a Board of Directors composed of eight persons under the Chairmanship of Mr. Patrice Luke who sets Policy Directives as mandated and issued by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. SJDC falls under the umbrella of the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment and the Hon. Charles Fernandez, is the Minister responsible for SJDC. The day-to-day affairs of the Corporation are managed by the Executive Director along with a competent management team and staff of 170 employees.

Grenada to Welcome a Diverse Lineup of Industry Leaders at CTO’s STC 2024

GRENADA (April 21, 2024) – The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), in partnership with the Grenada Tourism Authority, has curated a dynamic lineup of industry leaders and development partners for its Sustainable Tourism Conference (STC 2024). The gathering aims to explore new strategies for enhancing sustainable tourism amidst evolving global challenges.

Slated for April 22-24, 2024, and centered around the theme The 5 Ps – People, Planet, Prosperity, Purpose and Partnership, the event brings together experts who will discuss creating innovative tourism experiences that capitalize on the Caribbean’s rich natural and cultural resources and presents strategies and best practice solutions to benefit from emerging opportunities and address sustainable tourism challenges.

CTO’S Caribbean Media Awards 2024 to Celebrate Excellence in Journalism

NEW YORK (April 18, 2024) – The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) has announced the return of its Caribbean Media Awards, the prestigious honor given to journalists and influencers whose work has significantly contributed to the promotion of Caribbean tourism.

The awards ceremony, set to spotlight outstanding media contributions from the United States and the Caribbean, is scheduled to take place amidst the vibrant celebrations of Caribbean Week in New York, from June 16 to 21, 2024.

Submissions from public relations agencies, member countries, and the journalistic community are welcome.

“We’re thrilled to bring back the Caribbean Media Awards,” stated CTO Chairman Kenneth Bryan, who serves as Minister of Tourism and Ports for the Cayman Islands. “These awards are not just about recognizing excellence, they are a testament to the enduring spirit of the Caribbean and its vibrant culture. Our goal is to spotlight the stories that capture the heart of the Caribbean, stories that inspire, inform and engage audiences worldwide. It’s a celebration of the impactful narratives that contribute significantly to our tourism landscape.”

Entries are sought in the following award categories:

Best Feature Article or Story:   Recognizes excellence in long-form storytelling (print or online) that provides in-depth analysis, compelling narratives, and unique perspectives on Caribbean culture, history, etc.

Best News Reporting:  Honors exceptional reporting of breaking news, events, or issues of significance to the Caribbean region that demonstrates accuracy and journalistic integrity.

Best Podcast/Radio:   Celebrates excellence in podcasting/radio reporting, whether itʼs storytelling, interviews or discussions offering engaging and informative Caribbean content.

Best Photojournalism:  Celebrates impactful visual storytelling through photography, capturing the essence of life in the Caribbean region, from daily life to cultural events, natural landscapes, or social issues.

Best Video Production:   Honors outstanding video production, including broadcast news segments, short films, or online video content that showcases the richness and diversity of Caribbean culture, people and landscapes.

Best Social Media Campaign:   Recognizes innovative and effective social media campaigns (by journalists or influencers) that engage audiences, raise awareness, or promote positive change on issues relevant to the Caribbean region.

Best Personal Immersive Story:  Highlights a feature story that demonstrated time in the destination, integration and deep exploration of off-the-beaten-path in a destination.

Diaspora Journalist of the Year:   Honors members of the Diaspora community who impact tourism in the Caribbean region through their storytelling.

Emerging Journalist of the Year:   Spotlights the achievements of up-and-coming journalists, reporters or content creators who have demonstrated exceptional talent, potential and commitment to excellence in Caribbean media.

Only entries submitted by CTO government members, their public relations agencies or qualified media shall be eligible.

Minimum circulation for newspaper or magazine entries is 20,000 (1,000 for Caribbean media).

All entries must have been published or broadcast in the 2023 calendar year.

Only one entry per person per category will be accepted.

Submissions should showcase creativity and thoughtful knowledge of the Caribbean and have a provocative story angle.

Criteria for the judging of entries shall be:

● Content – Relevance, accuracy, cohesiveness of material, adherence to journalistic standards

● Structure & Form – Relevance of topic, clarity, pace, structure (introduction, development and conclusion), presentation of information and ideas

● Title – Relevance of title, concision, clarity

● Quality of Language – Use of language, quality of syntax, quality of sentence structure

● Originality – Originality of ideas, ability to spark audienceʼs curiosity, boldness, creativity

Entries that do not meet the selection criteria will be disqualified.

Depending on their assessment of the standard of entries, the judges may withhold awards in any category as they see fit. They may also ascribe “Special Mention” (without award) to an entry where warranted.

Decisions of the judges shall be final.

Caribbean Destinations Amplify Health and Safety Measures in Preparation for Upcoming Major Events

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (April 7, 2024) – As Caribbean destinations prepare to host major events, including vibrant festivals, carnivals, homecomings, and the highly anticipated International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup, tourism and public health stakeholders call on the region to remain diligent while reaffirming their commitment to health safety measures.

Amidst the excitement of these upcoming events, there is a unified push to recommit to essential health protocols and practices, ensuring the protection of employees and visitors alike. A vital element of this initiative is the expansion of the Caribbean Public Health Agency’s (CARPHA) Tourism Health Information System (THiS) to capture and respond immediately to negative health events. CARPHA is also building capacity in countries to encourage the widespread practice of food safety and to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases in the hospitality sector.

This move builds on a decade of collaboration between health and tourism officials in the Caribbean. The partnership has laid the groundwork for the region’s swift recovery from the global COVID-19 pandemic declared by the World Health Organization over four years ago. This collaboration was formed through the Caribbean Tourism and Health Program (THP) in 2014, following a Memorandum of Understanding signed by CARPHA, the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

The Caribbean’s successful navigation of the pandemic, marked by one of the lowest per capita COVID-19 rates and among the fastest recoveries worldwide in tourism and the economy, sets a strong foundation for rebuilding its events and group business segments. With groups and events accounting for over 20 percent of the region’s tourism business, ensuring a healthy environment is paramount to its success.

Nicola Madden Greig, President of CHTA, underscored the importance of “cohesive regional cooperation,” which was advanced during the pandemic. She said she had full confidence in the unified public-private sector approach to collaboration: “With the Caribbean being on such a positive growth trajectory, we cannot be complacent, and our efforts must be bolstered by a strong communications approach to continue to protect our residents and visitors while reaping the rewards of our resilient tourism industry.”

Dr. Joy St. John, Executive Director of CARPHA, concurred, asserting, “Globally, we are witnessing a resurgence of diseases such as measles, dengue fever, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and noroviruses, while new COVID-19 variants continue to develop. As one of the world’s leading travel destinations, we must remain vigilant to protect our employees and visitors.”

Similarly, CTO’s Secretary General, Dona Regis-Prosper, stressed, “As we continue to welcome visitors to experience the Caribbean’s breathtaking natural beauty and vibrant cultural heritage, we must uphold our commitment to ensuring a healthy environment.”

Dr. Didacus Jules, Director General of the OECS, shared his commendation of the relaunch and stated, “The OECS is delighted to see the return of major events allowing residents and visitors to share in our authentic experiences, and is pleased to continue its partnership with CARPHA and other regional tourism organizations towards healthier, safer tourism.”

In support of these goals and response to recent health and safety concerns, CARPHA is redoubling its outreach to the tourism industry, offering training, online tools, and resources to enhance health safety protocols.

Dr. Lisa Indar, Director of the Surveillance Disease Prevention and Control Division and Head of the Regional Tourism and Health Program at CARPHA, noted, “This year, we have launched a robust outreach effort to urge all Caribbean tourism-related businesses to renew their commitments to health and safety, refresh their training and protocols, and participate in the highly effective Tourism and Health Information System (THiS), a confidential online knowledge, help center and reporting system, and other CARPHA trainings, all towards advancing a healthier safer tourism product.”

In celebration of the country’s 50 th Independence anniversary, the Tourism Development Corporation has teamed up with the Royal Caribbean International to launch a multi-island training and pitch program for micro-businesses within the tourism sector.

Open to Bahamian entrepreneurs on the islands of New Providence, Grand Bahama, Exuma, and Abaco , this program seeks to identify the best upcoming and existing tour and excursion ventures – providing training, support, and opportunities for funding.

Program Goals

  • Empower and motivate Bahamians through a tailored training program designed to develop and strengthen entrepreneurial skills.
  • Provide funding opportunities to aid in the development and commercialization of new and innovative business concepts.
  • Promote and increase entrepreneurial opportunities within the tourism landscape, specifically in the tours and excursion sector.

Overview & Program Highlights

Fifty (50) budding entrepreneurs from the islands of New Providence (20), Grand Bahama (10), Exuma (10), and Abaco (10) will be selected to participate in an intense small business training program designed to develop and strengthen entrepreneurial skillsets over the course of a 5-week period.

In addition to the suite of training and support, the program also offers participants Business Plan Development, a professional webpage with eCommerce capabilities as well as Liability Insurance waivers.

Upon successful completion of the training, selected participants will be given an opportunity to compete and pitch their innovative concepts to secure grant funding awards.
