Guildhall Art Gallery is located in the heart of the City of London and is home to the City of London Corporation's art collection.

Established in the late 19th century as a collection of art treasures worthy of the capital city, Guildhall Art Gallery soon lived up to this ambition, with exhibitions that featured world famous masterpieces and works by some great artists. The wide-ranging collection of 4,500 works, including over 1,300 oil paintings, dates from 1670 to the present day. Particularly strong in Victorian material, with a number of choice Pre-Raphaelite items, the collection also houses important ceremonial and topographical paintings.

Free introductory tours, conducted by Guildhall Art Gallery’s team of City Guides , are available every day, from Tuesday to Sunday, at 12:15pm and 1:15pm and last 30-45 minutes. No booking is required. These tours are for individual visits (not for groups).

Book onto one of our guided art tours, happening every Saturday during the summer months! These free walks will be led by artist and educator, Gisela Torres, and guide you along The Line to discover the art, nature and history along the route.

Tours by Gisela will introduce the artworks along the route, and explore creative responses to themes including photography, architecture, history and sculpture. Tours will also reveal the nature and heritage contexts of the area.

Some of the walks will be co-hosted by external groups, which can be found in the Guided Art Tours collection . These may have specific focuses and alternative arrangements. Please note booking on Eventbrite is free or pay-what-you-can and is essential.

• Start: meet at11am outside London Aquatics Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The meeting point is directly under the roof of the Aquatics Centre on the bridge between Endeavour Square and the river. Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to ensure you join the group.
• Tour: lasts approximately 90 minutes
• End: the walk ends at 12.30 at Cody Dock. There is a cafe, toilets and outdoor seating at Cody Dock.
• Start: the closest station to the start point, London Aquatics Centre, is Stratford . Stratford is connected by the Jubilee Line, Elizabeth Line, Central Line, London Overground, National Rail, Stansted Express and DLR.
• End: the closest station to the end point, Cody Dock, is Star Lane . Star Lane is on the DLR.

What to expect

• Most of the tours are led by Gisela Torres, an artist and educator. Trained as a photographer and filmmaker, her practice engages with self-portraiture, performance, printmaking, sculpture and emerging media technologies.
• The tour passes 11 different artworks, and goes via The House Mill heritage site and along the River Lea.
• From 15 July, the walk will also include a 15 min stop at the House Mill, where we are hosting Tributaries , an exhibition of moving image works on the theme of water.
• Please wear appropriate footwear and weather appropriate clothes.
• Please bring water with you for the walk and suncream if it is hot.

Accessibility

There are sections of this route that may not be accessible for a wheelchair user due to the gradient, surface or narrowness of the paths.

There will be opportunities to stop and rest along the way, however the tour is reasonably paced and covers changes in level. If you have access needs, please get in touch prior on [email protected]. We want our tours to be as inclusive as possible and will adapt where possible, but recognise we may fall short in meeting all accessibility requirements.

Discover London’s alternative art scene with this guide to street art in Brick Lane

Perhaps you are visiting London and have been dazzled by the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London , wowed by the British Museum’s vast collection and have paid your respects to the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Where next?

Why not venture east to  Brick Lane  and see a very different side of the city and one of  London’s highlights ?

But Brick Lane wasn’t always the visitor magnet it is nowadays.

An ex-colleague who lived in the area when he first moved to London tells of evading muggers on its rubbish-strewn, rodent-riddled streets. Twenty-odd years later, it is booming with chic cafes, curry houses, vintage clothes shops and cutting-edge art galleries.

Brick Lane is also the epicentre of street art in London.

Building walls, hoardings, doors and shop shutters form the canvas for frequently changing artworks .  These creations assume many forms, from massive murals to small paintings to stickers and posters.

Exploring Street Art in Brick Lane: A Self-Guided Walking Tour

As East London is so rich in street art, it can be difficult to know where to start.

This Brick Lane walking tour, which focuses on streets that are artistic hotspots, should take you around  two hours . Exactly how much time you spend depends on how much exploring you decide to do and if you stop in one of the area’s many cafes.

It starts at  Old Street station  and finishes at  Aldgate East station . For help with getting around London, head to the  Transport for London  website.

Where is the Best Street Art in Brick Lane? A Walking Tour Map

As the artworks are ever-changing, don’t expect to find all of the art featured here when you visit. Hoardings are torn down, artists come and artists go.

But part of the fun is making exciting new finds.

Rivington Street

From  Old Street station , take exit 2 and walk a few minutes along Old Street, towards Shoreditch. Then turn left into  Rivington Street .

Although there is plenty of street art to admire along Rivington Street, the star turn is a  Banksy  just inside the Cargo beer garden.

Sclater Street

When you reach the end of Rivington Street, turn right onto  Shoreditch High Street  and continue along this main road until you reach  Bethnal Green Road . Here you turn left and then bear right into  Sclater Street .

Pass by the cool Rebel Alliance Motorcycle Company, and take in the artwork until you reach  Brick Lane .

Take a slight detour by turning left into Brick Lane to reach the  24-hour bagel shops  at this end of the street. These are a testament to the once-thriving Jewish community who arrived here in the late 19th Century.

Make sure you pick up a freshly made filled bagel.  At £2 for a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel, it is likely to be the cheapest lunch you will have in London.

Grimsby Street

Munching on your fresh bagel, walk back along Brick Lane for three or four minutes and then turn left into  Grimsby Street . Continue along this street, admiring the art as you walk, until it you reach  Cheshire Street . Then turn left to head back to Brick Lane.

Hanbury Street

Continue along Brick Lane until you reach  Hanbury Street  on your left. Once associated with the murders of Jack the Ripper, this is now one of the top spots for street art in Brick Lane.

The well-known large Pelican mural by ROA has been there since 2010. If you are ready for a cup of coffee by this stage, I recommend  The Canvas Cafe  on this street

Princelet Street

Heading back onto Brick Lane,  Princelet Street  is your next street on the left. Take a look down here for further artwork.

Seven Stars Car Park

When you are finished in Princelet Street, continue along Brick Lane and you will reach an alleyway on your right-hand side that will take you into the  Star Yard car park . This is one of the top locations for street art in Brick Lane, attracting the very best artists and with a high turnover of content.

Fashion Street

Retracing your steps, continue along Brick Lane until you reach  Fashion Street  on your right-hand side.

Once home to some of London’s worst slums, this road connects Brick Lane and Commercial Street. Nowadays, it is home to vibrant street art.

You have now reached the end of your Brick Lane street art walking tour. At the end of Fashion Street, turn left and continue along Commercial Street until you reach Aldgate East station.

The advantage of going on an organised Brick Lane street art walking tour is the insight that the guide can provide. This can make the difference between viewing a vibrant piece of art and learning more about what the artwork means.

Lady’s Self-Guided Street Art Tour of London

It’s time for another of my self-guided London walking tours. Rather than a neighborhood focus, this one has a theme: street art in London. There’s so much around the city that it’s easy to take it in. If you want to discover the best in one area, read on for A Lady in London’s street art tour of London’s Spitalfields and Shoreditch. There’s a map, too.

Street Art Tour of London

Over in east London , Spitalfields and Shoreditch are two of the most popular places for street artists to work in the city. From giant murals to small-scale projects, their work can be seen on high streets and side streets across these areas.

It’s a good idea to plan this walk in dry weather (or as dry as it gets in London), as it lends itself to lingering.

Additionally, keep in mind that street art is ephemeral by nature. A mural that’s here today can be painted over tomorrow, so this walk can be done numerous times with different things to see on each visit.

Street Art in East London

My self-guided street art tour of London will bring you to some of the best places to see this kind of work in the city. From side streets to tucked-away corners, it will offer you a good overview of London’s outdoor creative scene.

Self-Guided London Street Art Walk

This most colorful of London walks starts at Liverpool Street station. Exit onto Bishopsgate and turn left, then take a right on Brushfield Street.

Walk along this street to get to Commercial Street. Along the way, you’ll pass Old Spitalfields Market. The famous goat statue on your left will whet your appetite for art as you go.

Once at Commercial Street, turn left, then take your first right on Fournier Street. You’ll pass historic houses with colorful trim as you make your way to Brick Lane .

Brick Lane is where you’ll start to see London’s street art scene really kick in. The side streets and alleys here are full of it, and it’s worth peeking down each one as you pass by.

There’s always something new here, so it’s exciting to discover fresh London street art each time.

When you reach Hanbury Street, turn right. This is one of the best places for street art in London, and you’ll soon see why. There’s art on every surface here.

Make sure to walk all the way to where it meets Spelman Street to see everything. When you’re done, retrace your steps to get back to Brick Lane.

Once at Brick Lane, continue your street art tour of London by crossing over and continuing on Hanbury Street until you reach Dray Walk. There will be more art as you go, so keep an eye out for it.

Turn right on Dray Walk when you get there. It will take you into a courtyard called Ely’s Yard. There are lots of street food trucks here, so it’s a good place to stop for lunch if you’re hungry (check opening hours before you go).

Ely’s Yard is also full of street art, so it’s a great spot to take in sculptures and other works. Don’t forget to look up.

When you’re done exploring, follow Dray Walk around to where it meets Brick Lane. Turn left on Brick Lane and follow the street all the way up to where it meets Bethnal Green Road.

You’ll pass by a lot of good street art along the way, so keep an eye out both in front of and behind you as you walk.

When you reach Bethnal Green Road, turn left and then take a quick right on Redchurch Street. Walk along Redchurch Street until it meets Club Row.

Turn left on Club Row. Don’t miss the street art on the corner of Whitby Street as you make your way back to Bethnal Green Road.

Once at Bethnal Green Road, turn right and follow it to Shoreditch High Street . Turn right on Shoreditch High Street, then take your first left on Holywell Lane. This street always has something colorful to catch the eye.

When you get to Great Eastern Street, continue your street art tour of London by turning left and taking in more art as you head back around to Shoreditch High Street.

Once at Shoreditch High Street, turn around and retrace your steps, following Great Eastern Street all the way to where it becomes Old Street and beyond. There’s lots to see along the way, so make sure to keep watch.

Your street art tour of London ends at Old Street station. You can pick up a train, tube, or bus here, or continue exploring the area.

If you want a longer walk, one of my Shoreditch walks starts in the same place this one ends. You can combine the two to see more of the area.

Time: 1.5 – 2.5 hours (depending on time looking at art and eating)

As part of the tour, Mel and Mervyn will discuss how to best build and curate an art collection. Melanie Gerlis, an established art world journalist and commentator, is the art-market columnist for the Financial Times and was previously Art Market Editor for The Art Newspaper. Mel graduated from Cambridge University with a BA in English Literature, and from Sotheby’s Institute of Art with an MA in Art Business. Mervyn has been an avid collector of contemporary art for over 20 years, with a particular focus on portraiture. His collection includes works from Sam Mckinniss, Matthew Stone, Ryan Mcginley, Stuart Sandford, Dale Lewis, Rhed, Eric Yahnker, Andrej Dubravsky, David Speed along with more established YBA art pieces. Mervyn is a Trustee to the board of The Discerning Eye, an educational charity, established in the UK in 1990, to encourage a wider understanding and appreciation of the visual arts and to stimulate debate about the place and purpose of art in our society.
