So, I recommend first looking at fans with a small, compact design that won't take up much space in your RV.

In addition, you may want to look for a design that includes a carry handle. It's a convenient feature that is often overlooked until you start lugging the fan around.

Rechargeable Battery

Fans with rechargeable batteries can offer a more predictable battery life. You can easily connect the USB cable to the power bank whenever you need to operate the fan.

Some fans require the use of D-cell batteries, which is not always the best power source. They can be cumbersome and take up your precious cargo space. In addition, if you forget to purchase new batteries for the trip, you may find yourself with a dead fan.

A rechargeable fan is also an excellent option if you have solar panels . Your solar panel may have a USB port available to plug in devices to charge.

Then there are other considerations to factor in. One is the type of power source you will need to run the ceiling fan. Keep in mind that you will need an inverter or shore power, or a generator to run a 120-volt ceiling fan.

If you do not have those items, when you boondock, you won’t be able to use the fan. And even if you do, you have to manage your power use. Luckily, there are 12-volt RV ceiling fans available from different manufacturers.

Another factor to consider will be the weight of the fan. You have to add the total weight of the fan and the assembly to your cargo weight. Then you have to see if you need to sacrifice another item to make room for this one.

Don’t forget that the mount type is important as well. As you can see, it is possible but not always the best move to make.

Are RV Ceiling Fans 12 Volts or 110v?

There are different power models for RV ceiling fans. You can install a traditional home’s 120-volt fan in your RV but the problem described above would come into effect.

There are regular RV 120-volt ceiling fans as well. They will need shore power or a good generator to work. We do know that Keystone installs the third option which is a 12-volt ceiling fan.

These may be more prevalent in the RV world as most people want to have the option of running their ceiling fan no matter how they camp. But there is also a 4th option you can consider buying.

This option is for smaller, more portable ceiling fans and they are powered by a USB cable. These models do not permanently attach to your RV’s or trailer’s ceiling but can be placed on a hook and move the air around till you change rooms.

They also come with in-line controls as well as 3 to 6 blades. These are handy if you have a smaller RV or trailer and need a lot of air movement while it is still hot outside. The good thing is, they are very affordable as they are priced well below $50.

How Many Watts Does an RV Ceiling Fan Use?

This will depend on the type of ceiling fan you buy and install. The portable, USB-driven types may use between 5 and 10 watts depending on if they are multiple speeds or not.

These models may be the most economical power-wise. The other options for power use will depend on their size. You are looking at using between 18 and 35 watts approx.

The number of watts that you will use will also depend on if there is a light attached and if they are multi-speed as well. Even if they use between 50 and 100 watts per day, you are spending less than $1 on electricity for convenience and fresh air.

The 12-volt models will fit into that 18 to 35-watt scale as well. Usually, around the 20-watt range. This usage will depend on the model and the features it was given. It will also depend on how often you use your ceiling fan.

If you like running it all night, then expect to use more watts per day than those who only use it during warm daytime hours.

How Much Will An RV Ceiling Fan Drain From My Battery?

This will depend on the type of battery you own and use. The energy capacity of different types of batteries is not all the same. For example, if you use a deep cycle lead-acid battery, you may have on the label 110 amp hours. But you should not discharge the power more than 50%.

That means you only have about 55 amp hours to use. The average 12-volt ceiling fan needs 2 amps of power and depending on how much you use the fan, you may not have a lot of power left for other features.

Then amps are not all equal. I amp of shore power equals about 10 to 11 amps of battery power. So you really should not be figuring out your amp use and instead use watts. This is the most consistent unit across voltage.

To figure the amount of amps you are using you need to know- the voltage rating, average wattage, and time used of every appliance or load before you can figure out if you have enough battery capacity to power the ceiling fan and other items.

How Much Does an RV Ceiling Fan Cost?

The USB-driven models seem to be priced about the same as some 12-volt models. You can easily get these models through Amazon for under $50. The prices will vary depending on the vendor, the quality of the fan, and so on.

The 12-volt models also priced through Amazon, can range between $20 and $100 with dual-powered ceiling fans running about $149. If you have room and power to spare, then a regular home ceiling fan will run you over $150 depending on the model.

These prices all come from Amazon and you may find better prices at other outlets or find something you like on sale. Your cost will also depend on the brand you buy.

Some comparison shop[ping for the style you like is in order and make sure to have a 2nd and 3rd choice just in case your 1st choice is too expensive or out of stock. If you own a small trailer or RV, those USB models may fit the ceiling space you have available.

But be forewarned, those smaller trailers do not provide you with a lot of headroom and ceiling fans may be a luxury you cannot install.

How To Install a Ceiling Fan in an RV

They say you cannot directly place a ceiling fan on your RV ceiling. You need an electric box and some ceiling joists to attach to that box to hold the weight of the fan while it is rotating.

The first step is to cut a hole in your ceiling the size of the electric box and mount it to the extra support system. Once installed, test the strength before adding the ceiling fan.

Next, turn the power off to the section of your RV you are doing this work. Then make your wire connections and you can hide these in the ceiling or along the wall.

Once that is done, install the mount and you may have 3 lug bolts to make the mount secure. There should be instructions included in the box with the ceiling fan. Use washers and good screws as well to make the installation secure.

Finally, attach the blades to the assembly, the instruction sheet should have these instructions as well. Go carefully and do one blade at a time. Once you are done, do a test to see how the fan works.

Make any adjustments you need to after you do this test. Unfortunately, you are limited to the type of ceiling fan you can install. The ceilings are generally 7 to 8 feet high and that means you need a flush mount model and not a drop-down rod model.

How To Hang a Ceiling Fan in an RV

If you go with a temporary installation, in which the portable models would be the most compatible, then using strong hooks is the best way to hang your new ceiling fan.

The portable models are usually not that tall so a good-sized hook that can handle the weight of the fan will suffice. These hooks will need a good eye bolt drilled into one of the ceiling joists to be secure and able to hold the weight.

Then once the eye bolt is in place, slip the hook through the eye and attach the portable ceiling fan. The other models of ceiling fans, the 120 and 12-volt options, will come with their own mounting hardware.

However, those units may be too heavy to directly mount the fan to your RV’s ceiling. You will need to find a good strong central joist to secure the ceiling fan.

The best part of using a ceiling fan is that it can cool your RV down and save on power use by keeping your AC unit off. In many areas of the country, you do not need an AC unit most of the time anyways so save while you can.

RV Ceiling Fan Wiring Diagram

Generally, ceiling fan wiring is quite simple. You have a black, green, and red wire to work with. Then you simply attach the wires to their corresponding colored wires and you should have power.

Of course, the USB models will not have nor need a wiring diagram. The only wiring you are doing is connecting the USB plug to the USB port. They are simple and inexpensive options when you do not want to go through the installation process.

For the other models, here are two wiring diagrams to give you a good idea of what to expect if you do go through the installation process.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated about wiring these electrical devices. The only problem you may encounter is if your RV brand decided to use different colored wires for power, negative, and ground.

This is often the case as some RV owners have found out. Just make sure to follow all instructions and if in doubt, keep your multimeter or circuit tester handy to find the power and negative wires.

The last thing you want to do is cross-wire the ceiling fan and create a bigger electrical project for yourself.

Tips For Installing a Ceiling Fan In an RV

1. Check the structure of your RV or trailer’s roofing material. Make sure the timbers used are strong enough to hold the weight of the ceiling fan

2. Pick a suitable location and this may not be easy as the layout of the joists etc., may not be compatible with your chosen location. Have a couple of locations in mind in case one or more do not work out for you.

3. Use proper gauge wire when adding wire to your RV. This will prevent electrical problems in the future and protect the fan and your RV from damage.

4. Hide those wires in the ceiling if you can. But do not leave them bare. Use ducting, PVC, or similar pipe to protect the wires from any possible damage that can happen.

5. Pick a ceiling fan that is not too large or too small for your space. Watch the headroom so that means eliminating drop-down models from your list of potential ceiling fans.

6. Brand & construction- pick the brand you trust the most but do not be surprised if it is not the best option you could have bought. Make sure the fan is made from durable materials so it will last.

Also, do some comparison shopping as the most expensive ceiling fan may not be the best for your RV or trailer’s floor plan. The cheapest may not be the most durable. Find a good fan that fits your decor as well as the space you have available.

That could mean paying somewhere in the middle of the price range for the type of ceiling fan you want.

Replace Your RV Ceiling Fan

Once the ceiling fan has been installed, most of the hard work will have been done and you won’t have to re-do it. That is unless something was damaged over the years and you need to replace wires or the electrical box.

With the wires and electrical box still in place, all this task has to be done is the removal of the old fan and the quick installation of the new one.

One thing you should be wary of is the weight of the new fan. You really should not go above the weight of the old fan as everything is secure.

The joists in the ceiling can handle that weight and if you go heavier, you may be adding too much weight and the joist may crack, etc. Also, any additional weight on the new fan means you have to subtract some items from your cargo to compensate.

Is It Safe To Use a Ceiling Fan In an RV

This is a valid question as many people are not sure about how a ceiling fan will work in such a small area. But if placed in a good spot and all manufacturer installation instructions have been followed, then it is safe to use the ceiling fan.

The thing to watch out for is when you stretch or reach up with your arms. You may inadvertently hit the blades and hurt yourself or damage the fan. If you secured the fan properly, then it should not fall on you at any time.

These fans are safe to use and they will help you cut down on your energy use. They can replace your AC unit in some situations which will help you save some money.

What you need to know before buying an RV ceiling fan

Shopping for an RV ceiling fan can be daunting. Lots of terms thrown around and it's hard to see what is what. We've put together a quick Q&A you can check.

Does an RV ceiling fan has to be 12v?

Actually, it's entirely possible to install larger and stronger ceiling fans in an RV. You simply need to hook them up to the right electric system and yes - they will take more electric power to run.

If this isn't an issue for you, and you're going to operate on shore-power or rely on your generator, then a solid ceiling fan that runs on 110v AC can definitely be an option.

Most RVers look for 12v options because they allow you to run the fan when you have no shore power and no genny running. The 12V option can be a lifesaver when you're boondocking in a national park or another off-grid campground that limits the use of generators overnight.

What's a non-brush or brushless ceiling fan?

Don't look for brushes on the blades. You won't find any.

The term brushless or non-brush refers to the type of motor used to operate the fan. Traditional motors have brushes in them. Brushless motors use a different mechanism. If you're technically inclined and want to know more, check out this video -

If you just want to know the bottom line, it is that brushless motors are more versatile and responsive. They can be more effective and use up less electricity.

What's a hugger ceiling fan (and do you need one for your RV?)

This has to do with where in the room the fan blades rotate. When you install a ceiling fan in a regular home with a high ceiling, there is usually a down-rod that places the blades well below the ceiling. This allows for better air circulation and with a high ceiling that's at least 9' high, it works out very well.

The average ceiling height in a travel trailer or motorhome is much lower - usually around 7 feet at most (you can see some specs in our guide: Which RV is best for tall people ). Which means you could end up placing those rotating blades at 5-6 ft high. Not very safe.

The solution? Hugger fans. These fans, also known as flush-mount ceiling fans, literally "hug" the ceiling. Yes, it makes RV fans less effective but hey, you get to avoid head injury!

Hi, Most people prefer not to use them in an RV because of the low ceilings. I don’t think there’s much of a market for low-hanging drop-down 12V fans for that reason. Some of the models suggested in the post are not as close to the ceiling as others, so maybe they could work for you?

Hugger fans are slightly less effective because there is less space between the fan and the ceiling. Fans push air downward through the blades, so more space above the fan equates to more efficiency, and vice versa. That said, hugger fans are by no means a bad option; they will still circulate air, just not as efficiently as a normal fan. And like we mentioned in the post, a hugger fan is the safer option for an RV, as a conventional ceiling fan will likely hang down too low. To answer your second question, we recommend doing a Google search of RV roof repair companies in your area and contacting each one for a quote. Best of luck!

Also, the installation is not that hard. The only difficult part is removing the old fan as well as the remaining sealant. You just need to drop this fan down the opening and attach two wires to power it up.

Is it your first time to shop for an RV roof vent? Then it is understandable if you don’t even know what you need to look for. You don’t have to worry since this buyer’s guide will teach you all the things you have to keep an eye out for. Among the most important ones are:

The size of your RV roof vent – You need to ensure that the RV roof vent fan you will be getting can fit inside the hole it is supposed to go into. Most RV vent fans often come in the 14-inch x 14-inch standard size.

However, there is always the chance that your RV uses unorthodox sizes, like 13-inch x 14-inch or 14.5-inch x 14.5-inch, so use your tape measure and double-check the size of the opening. Aside from the square dimensions, check the thickness of the roof material you will be working with, too.

Speed control – Several vent fans come with only one speed, and that is its default setting. However, you can also find those fans that come with variable speed controls, meaning you can set their speeds. Some models also come with 10-speed settings, while most just have a three speed fan. However, the settings on the 10-speed fans have minor changes from one to the next. CFM rating – CFM stands for cubic feet per minute, and it refers to the volume of air that the RV roof vent fan can move or remove from a room. Amount of current required – Before you pull the trigger on an RV vent fan, you need to check if the fan’s current draw is compatible with the electric circuit of your vehicle. In other words, your RV should be able to provide the vent fan with enough current for the motor to work. On average, a vent fan set on high will have a current draw of around 3 amperes.

Lid opening method – There are two basic lid opening methods that you can choose from – automatic and manual. It will be a matter of preference which method you choose. For instance, automatic opening vent fan lids are more convenient as you can open and close them just by pressing a button.

Some vent fans also tend to close automatically when it’s raining. The downside to automatic closing lids is that they will require a bit more wiring during the installation. Aside from that, these fan models are higher-priced.

On the other hand, fans that have manual lids are not that hard to open. They usually come with a crank knob that is not that difficult to turn. One advantage of a manual hand crank is that you can open the lid to the degree that you want. It is not like the automatic opening lids, where they open all the way only. With that, one can argue that automatic opening lids are more of a luxury rather than a necessity.

Motor durability – If you are serious about saving on air conditioning costs, you will most likely have the camper van vent fan most of the time while you are camping. It means that you will be putting a lot of strain on the fan motor, so you should choose a vent fan with a heavy-duty motor that can last a long time.

How Many Types of Vent Fans for RV Are There?

There are a couple of different types of RV vent fans that you can choose from depending on what your needs are. Among the most common ones are:

Standard vent – This type is just a simple vent. You just have to install it so that there will be an opening where stale air and smells can escape, and fresh air from the outside can come inside the recreational vehicle. It is just a fancy hole in your roof that you can open and close.

Vent fan with crank lid opening – These units are the vents with actual fans. It is much better than the previous type as it comes with a fan that vents out inside air outside to maintain the inside temperature inside cool and the air fresh.

Many brands also allow you to reverse the fan direction to blow fresh air from outside inside the recreational vehicle. You can open the vent cover from the inside of the vehicle using a manual hand crank, but some feature a lever that you can use to prop the cover open.

Electronic lid opening – This unit is very similar to the previous vent fan type. It comes with an electronic fan that blows air out and/or into the vehicle. The difference between the two is that this one has an automatic electronic cover. You just need to push a button or flip a switch to open or close the lid.

Several electric lid vent fans come with an automatic rain sensor. It means that when the vent fan gets a bit wet from the rain, it will automatically close the lid and turn off the fan.

How Does an RV Vent Fan Work?

A vent fan is installed on the roof of the RV. When you turn on the vent fan, it will draw out the air and moisture from inside the vehicle outside. It keeps the air inside the RV fresh and prevents it from getting stale and heavy. It is also great for drawing out the kitchen smells and humidity along with the range hood.

Many brands allow you to reverse the spin of the RV roof vent fan to draw air from the outside into the vehicle. It is a great idea if you park somewhere with outdoor air that is quite fresh and cool. It will allow you to keep the interior of your RV cool and the air inside fresh. With that, you can save energy because you no longer need to turn on the air conditioner quite as often.

You can find many reliable manufacturers of vent fans that you can choose from. I have tested quite a lot of them, and among the brands that stood out are Fan-Tastic, Livpow, Maxxair, Ventline, Heng’s, Camco, Hike Crew, and Vortex. I can guarantee that these brands are some of the best that you will ever find.

Although both these fans are great choices, the winner between the two is the Maxx RV roof vent fan. The primary reason is that it comes with a remote control, which allows you to control the fan’s speed and direction and the opening and closing of the lid.

Are All RV Roof Vents the Same Size?

When you shop for RV vent fans, you will most likely find that they only come in one size, 14-inch x 14-inch. Although some come in 13-inch x 14-inch, they are still hard to find, and they usually do not fit in most RVs. If you will be replacing a vent fan in your RV, it will likely leave an opening that will fit a 14-inch x 14-inch vent fan.

How Do You Replace an RV Ventilation Fan?

If you need to replace the old RV vent fan, you do not need to hire an electrician; you can do it yourself quite easily. You just need a replacement fan and a couple of handy tools. You should then follow these steps:

Step 1 – Get the right-sized replacement fan

You will need to measure the dimensions of your existing fan carefully. Although most RV vent fans are 14-inch x 14-inch, you should measure it again just to be on the safe side. There is no telling if your existing fan has one of those obscure measurements, so save yourself all of the hassles of returning your purchase and waiting for the replacement.

Step 2 – Take out the vent

You will need to remove the knobs and screws that hold the fan’s plastic shroud inside the recreational vehicle. After removing all the screws, the cover should just drop down.

Once the cover of the fan is off, disconnect the wires that provide power to the fan. You just join them using clips to not even strip and join the wires later. Set the power supply wire aside so that it will not get in the way of the new fan, but make sure that you can still reach it later.

Step 3 – Remove the sealant

For this step, you will need to get up on the roof and locate the fan. Remove the screws anchoring the vent fan in place, but a thick layer of sealant will cover them. You will need to remove as much of the sealant as you can. Do not stop when you expose the screws. Get most of the sealant off, and the edges of the vent fan should be visible.

If you are having trouble removing the sealant, you can use a heat gun to warm up the sealant and get it soft enough that you can easily scrape it off the vent fan.

Step 4 – Pry up the vent

Move your scraping tool around the edge of the vent until it starts to lift off the surface. There might be a bit of butyl tape holding the fan onto the roof, so you will probably need to move it little by little until you can pull it out of the hole in the roof.

Step 5 – Take out all the excess sealant

You will need to take this step slow and muster as much of your patience as you can. Use a heat gun or a blow dryer set on medium or high to heat the sealant to be easier to remove.

You need to be extra careful here to easily damage the roof if you make even one small mistake. When there is just a bit of sealant left, you can clean up the remainder using a few mineral spirits. Just apply a liberal amount of the spirit onto the remaining sealant bits using a rag. Wait a few minutes to let it do its work, and gently use a scraper and a rag to remove them.

You will want a clean and neat surface before installing the new fan, so use a bit of rubbing alcohol to get all the dust off the surface. It will give the butyl mounting tape a better surface to cling onto.

Step 6 – Mount the new fan

Do a test fitting of the new fan. It will give you an idea of which direction the fan will go into. Aside from that, it can tell you if you have to modify the opening a bit more. Once you are satisfied with the fit, you can place butyl tape around the hole edges and make sure that there are no gaps where water can seep through.

Carefully place the fan over the opening and apply a bit of pressure to make sure that it sticks onto the butyl tape. After that, screw in the self-tapping screws into the holes in the frame and through the butyl tape and the roof material.

Do not overtighten the screws. Go around the frame, gradually tightening each screw to compress the putty a little bit each time. Stop when the screws are considerably hand-tight already.

Step 7 – Apply sealant around the fan edges

Grab a tube of lap sealant and apply a generous amount around the edges of the vent fan. Start by placing a dollop of the sealant over each screw head and then go over the edge of the vent fan.

If you use a self-leveling sealant, wait for it to spread out and settle, which usually takes 24 hours. If you are not using a self-leveling sealant, then you will have to spread it out by hand.

It is best to use self-leveling lap sealant when the weather is above 60 degrees F. It can help ensure that it will settle and cure quicker. Cold lap sealant is very difficult to work with, and it will take more than a day to settle.

If you cannot avoid applying the sealant in cold weather, you can use a heat gun set on medium to heat the tube gradually so that the material can flow easily. You can also use the heat gun on the applied sealant so it can spread out faster.

Step 8 – Connect the fan to the power

Go inside your recreational vehicle, and then connect the new fan to the power supply wire. Make sure that the clips are on securely. You should hear an audible clicking sound when you join the two ends together. Check if you connected the fan properly. If you did everything correctly, the fan should turn on.

Step 9 – Install the new fan shroud

This one serves as the last step. Place the new fan shroud over the fan and make sure that you do not overtighten the screws. Doing so might crack the shroud.

Care and Maintenance

There are a couple of things that you can do to make your RV vent fan last for as long as they possibly can. The most important and probably the most frequent maintenance task you will be doing on the fan is cleaning the screen. The screen prevents bugs and bits of debris from getting into the vehicle.

The nice thing here is that its design allows the easy removal of the screen. Once you remove the screen, you should clean it in a basin of soapy water and with the help of a soft brush to remove any dirt stuck on it. Allow it to dry completely before you reattach it to the fan.

The fan blades will also need cleaning from time to time. However, unlike the screen, it is much more difficult to remove the blades. You must climb up to the roof, disconnect the fan from the power, remove the RV vent fan motor. After that, you have to take out the fan attached to it.

However, if you do not need to deep clean the blades, it is much easier to place your hand inside a sock and dip it in some clean water. Reach into the fan and wipe as much dirt from the fan blades as you can.

If you have not used a vent fan in your RV, I highly suggest that you get one. You will immediately notice the difference in air quality, and you will also notice how much money you will be saving from air conditioning costs.

Types of camping fans

When it comes to camping fans, there are three different styles to choose from :

• Table-top fans . Typically designed to rest on a table or next to you near the campfire. Most models allow you to adjust the fan head for an optimal airflow angle. These fans tend to be larger, so if you have minimal packing space, that’s something to consider.
• Tent fans . These are fans that feature some kind of attachment, either a hook or a magnetic plate system to hang in your tent and provide much-needed airflow. Many of these tent fans also include a light source, which is helpful at night when you’re finding your way around a dark tent.
• Handheld fans . These are designed for the camper on the go. They are typically smaller and don’t have a huge amount of air power, but are adequate enough to quickly cool off while holding close to your face. Power sources

A big factor to keep in mind when shopping for camping fans is the power source :

Fans are not exactly a new technology, nor is their function particularly novel. However, there have been some important innovations with power, design, and portability, and one company seems to be the air apparent to the best portable fan for truck campers. Drum roll, please…

THE BEST: Ryobi 18-Volt/120-Volt One+ Hybrid Fan

It’s almost comical how many readers heaped praise on the Ryobi 18-Volt/120-Volt One+ Hybrid Fan (#P3320). What’s even funnier to us is that we too have the same Ryobi 18-Volt/120-Volt One Plus Hybrid Fan, and love it. This summer we have used the Ryobi nearly every day in our camper.

About two years ago, Mikeee Tassinari – aka the Grand Poobah of the North-East Truck Camping Jamboree – had this same Ryobi fan at a camper gathering. When we admired his fan – “Say, that’s a nice fan, Mikeee” – he practically made a late-night infomercial presentation. By the time he was done, Angela was completely convinced, and I might have joined Amway . “If you act now…”

If we plug it into a USB port, it will run continuously. I even ordered a second one. As of July 2022, it’s $23.99 on Amazon .

I also ordered the TriPole car fan , which is USB powered only. It is a desktop with dual fans that both tilt and swivel. The unit has independent control with a push button on/off and three speeds. Because of the higher current draw, it can run both fans on a standard USB at lower speeds only.

It requires a 2-amp USB port to run both fans at the highest speed. After looking inside, I mounted it upside down on the ceiling. In September 2021 it was $18.99. Now it’s $29.99.

“I have a Ryobi hybrid fan that uses a 18-colt Li-ion battery or 11-volt plug-in.

It’s extremely durable. I accidentally lowered a lot of weight on the fan (in the upright position) and it was unaffected. It should have been crushed or destroyed. I don’t know if it’s the plastic or the design, but it is sturdy.

How To Replace A Non-Powered RV Roof Vent With A Powered Fan

RVs can never have enough fans. 12 volt roof fans are great for getting the air moving on hot summer nights and keeping the humidity out during the winter.

Many campers come with just one roof vent fan in the bathroom, but there are usually multiple roof vents placed throughout the RV.

Oftentimes there’s a standard RV vent over the main bed in the camper and in the main room.

RV roof vents are nice for letting in air, but a fan works much better.

12 volt RV roof fans look very similar to standard RV roof vents. They have a lid that can open and close, they have bug netting on the inside, and they are made to fit the same standard 14×14 inch square hole.

Replacing a non-powered RV vent with a 12 volt RV fan is usually pretty simple. You won’t need to change the size of the roof hole and if you use the proper sealant it’s not hard to waterproof the new fan so the roof is protected.

The biggest challenge is usually finding a way to get power to the new fan.

Getting Power To A 12 Volt RV Fan

The easiest way to get power to a 12 volt RV fan, if there wasn’t one already installed, is to run wires from the nearest ceiling light.

The lights in an RV all use 12 volt power which means the power supply is compatible with 12 volt RV fans.

Sometimes the wiring for the lights will actually be routed through the RV vents.

If you’re lucky you will see wires when you remove the inner plastic cover (garnish ring) for the vent you want to replace.

Removing the garnish ring for the vent you are going to replace is the first step to figuring out the wiring situation.

It lets you not only see if there are any wires, but it also will give you a glimpse of the roof material and design.

Most travel trailer roofs are made of wood, which is a fairly easy material to work with. But lots of 5th-wheels and motorhomes have aluminum frames and roofs which can make routing wires a little more difficult.

For any square hole in the roof, manufacturers will usually build a frame around the inside to help protect the insulation and to give the screws that hold the vent in place something to grab onto.

If you need to run wires from a nearby light you can drill a small hole that’s just big enough for the fan wires to go through in one of the wooden beams.

Another option for those of you who don’t like the idea of drilling holes into the roof frame you can always just route the wires on the outside of the fan and light by running them along the ceiling

This option actually works pretty well. You don’t need to spend time trying to feed wires through the roof framing and insulation and the wires are so small you don’t really need to do that much to hide them.

How To Replace An RV Vent With A Powered RV Fan

So long as you can find a way to run wires from a nearby light replacing a non-powered RV vent with a powered RV fan is actually pretty easy.

Below I’ve written some step by step instructions, including a list of all of the parts necessary.

We replaced our vent with a Maxx Air Fan (click to view on Amazon) but you can use any 12 volt RV fan so long as it’s made to fit the standard 14×14 inch square hole.

Other popular options include Fan-Tastic Fans (click to view on Amazon) or the traditional RV roof vent fan (click to view on Amazon) with a small fan on one side.

Tools & Parts For Removing RV Vent

• Robertson/Square Head Drill Bits (most RV manufacturers use different sizes of Robertson head screws for inside and outside the RV)

Tools & Parts For Installing RV Roof Vent Fan

1. Remove Old RV Roof Vent Garnish Ring

To remove the vent that you want to replace you will need to first remove the inside garnish ring. This usually is secured by 4 screws around the edges.

They are normally the same kind of screw that’s used on the roof as well. In most cases, you will need a square Robertson drill bit or screwdriver to remove it.

When I removed the garnish ring to the vent on our motorhome I was happy to find that the cables to the nearby light were routed behind the garnish ring.

That meant there was already a way for me to get the fan wires to the light where all the wires in the circuit were connected together.

2. Make Sure You Can Route Your Wires

When the old roof vent is removed you are going to have a big hole in your roof until you install the new fan.

I recommend having the fan ready to go so you can install it the same day.

Even though I knew I was going to be able to get power to the new fan via the 12 volt light I wanted to make  sure everything would work before I took off the vent.

I first disconnected the shore power to the RV and then the power from the RV batteries.

Then I removed the 12 volt light to get to the spot where all of the wires in the circuit were connected.

There were already 6 wires (3 positive and 3 negative) being joined behind the light in the ceiling. Multiple lights are normally connected together to create a circuit in RVs. That’s why there’s usually a lot of wires.

I removed the electrical nut connecting all of the wires to expose the stripped ends. I then connected my Max Air fan using some 14 gauge wire with alligator clips on each end ( click to view on Amazon ).

After connecting all of the wires I reconnected the RV battery and turned on the fan to make sure it could get power and all of the lights in the circuit would still work.

Everything worked great and the fan started right up.

I always test things like 12 volt fans before installing them to make sure they work. If the fan was damaged from the factory and I had already installed it I would have had to remove everything to return it.

3. Remove the Old Vent on the RV Roof

Next, you are going to need to remove the old vent. There’s going to be a lot of sealant covering the screw heads and the corners of the vent.

Take off the old sealant first using a scraper. Make sure you don’t damage the roof fabric when you’re doing this.

It takes some time but it’s possible to remove the sealant without hurting the roof’s membrane. I like to use a plastic scraper for this part.

Once the old sealant is removed and the screw heads are exposed you can use a drill and the right size of Robertson drill bit to unscrew them.

Make sure you save the screws because you can use them to secure the new fan to the roof.

The vent will also be secured to the RV roof with butyl tape. You are going to need to pry up the vent with a scraper.

Again make sure you are careful not to damage any of the fabric on the RV roof.

Once the old roof vent is removed the old sealant still left on the roof needs to be cleaned off as much as possible.

It’s ok if there’s a little left since it’s almost impossible to get everything off without damaging the roof fabric but you don’t want any large pieces left.

Lastly, wash the area around the hole on the roof so no dirt or oils get between the new sealant and roof fabric.

4. Install the New Fan onto the Roof

At this point, you can install the part of the fan that goes on the roof so it’s sealed and waterproofed as quickly as possible.

To properly seal the edges around the fan you will need to place butyl tape around the bottom edge of the fan without any gaps.

Make sure the tape covers every screw hole so the screws will be sealed as well.

The holes for the new fan probably won’t line up with the holes from the old fan. Most of the time you have to just center the fan and screw it into the RV roof making new holes.

The butyl tape and lap sealant will seal the old holes and stop any water leaks.

Once the fan is secured to the roof you can apply the self leveling lap sealant.

There are more pictures in the article linked to above but you basically want to cover the edges of the fan and all of the screw heads.

The sealant will spread out as it drys making the sealed area even larger which creates a strong waterproof bond.

I normally use at least 1 tube of self leveling lap sealant when installing fans and vents.

It’s not a good idea to get stingy with the sealant when it comes to RV roofs since water leaks are so damaging to campers.

5. Connect the Wires

Now that the roof part is over with it’s time to connect the wires. Hopefully, you’ve already run your wires from the light to your fan or tested it to make sure everything works.

Instead of splicing into the wires that were near the fan it was easier to just run the fan wires to the point where the light was connected since it was so close.

You could also cut into the wires that are right next to the vent and wire them there. Just make sure you keep the circuit going by connecting all 4 wires plus the fan wires.

In the photo above there are 4 positive and 4 negative wires all connected together.

Two wires come from the fan, two from the light, 2 from the wires that are being run from the breaker box, and two that continue to more lights that are on the same circuit.

6. Hide the Wires with the Garnish Ring

Now that all of the wires are connected you can replace the light and put the garnish ring on the fan.

Garnish rings that come with vents and fans usually need to be cut to fit the shape and thickness of your RV roof.

Make sure you follow the instructions that came with the fan you purchased to cut it properly.

You may also be able to use the garnish ring that was on the vent you replaced.

The garnish ring hides the roof beams and the wires.

If you ran your wires on the outside of the ceiling you can still put them on the inside of the garnish ring. Just have them poking out of the outside edge.

Once the garnish ring is on you now have a 12 volt powered RV fan installed in place of a non powered RV roof vent.

Frequently Asked Questions About RV Fan Installation

What gauge of wire should i use to power my rv fan or lights.

It’s recommended to use 14 gauge wire when working with the 12 volt system that runs the RV lights and roof vent fans.

14 gauge wire works with 15 amp fuses which is normally the size of fuse connected to that 12 volt system in an RV.

How many watts does a large RV fan like a Max Air or Fan-tastic Fan use?

Even though they are much larger than the traditional RV fans that many of us are used to, the larger fans still don’t use a ton of electricity.

On low many of these fans will only use around 6 watts and around 50 to 60 watts at the max settings.

If you have multiple fans running at the same time and you are using your RV batteries the watt usage can really start to add up throughout the day.

Make sure you are monitoring your RVs power usage so you know how long you can run the RV fans on battery power.

The Complete Guide for Hanging Anything on Your RV Wall

One of the most asked questions by folks decorating or organizing their RV is how to hang things on the RV wall. If you just purchased a new RV, you may be having a hard time putting a permanent hole in your fresh new wall. Additionally, you may be worried about damage to the wall and whether or not it can hold what you want to hang.

If you want to find out how to hang things in your RV, you found the right article. RV walls a vastly different from the walls in your home. Therefore, hanging things will need to follow some different rules. We’ll cover all of your available options and suggest what methods and products are best for your needs. Luckily, there are different ways to achieve the same results that you would at home.

Understanding RV Walls

Before you take out a hammer and nail, open your RV door and look at the thickness between the exterior and interior RV walls. You’ll quickly realize that RV walls are thin, often just a few inches in width.

If you have an older RV, you likely have a traditional RV wall, which more closely matches a residential wall constructed with a wooden frame, fiberglass insulation, and thin wood laminate on the interior. However, newer RVs are more commonly built with an innovative laminate process that is a more sealed structure where the exterior, cellular insulation, and interior walls of an RV are glued together. Also, the support structure is usually aluminum studs, helping to create a much lighter and better-insulated wall.

Your walls are much thicker in your home and will typically use wooden studs set at regular intervals and covered by drywall. When hanging items on a residential wall, locating a stud or taking advantage of hanging hardware to attach things to drywall is relatively easy. While you can borrow some ideas from hanging things at home , your approach will need to gear toward the uniqueness of RV walls.

Luckily, you have several good options that can assist you with decorating and hanging things on your RV walls. Let’s take a look at them. But first, let’s talk about heavy items.

Can I hang heavy items on my RV wall?

You should avoid hanging anything really heavy on an RV wall in most instances. There are a few exceptions to this rule, which we’ll cover later, but the heavier the item, the greater the chance of damaging your wall.

In an RV, you not only need to think about the ability of the wall to hold the item, but you also need to consider the stress that the item will place on the wall from the item bouncing around while traveling. For example, a heavy shelf may seem like it’s holding just fine while stationary, but it can jolt loose if not properly secured.

Can I mount a TV on my RV wall?

Some exceptions to the weight rule include hanging things like TVs. This exception is only true if your RV was constructed with a mounting location for the TV. If you purchased a new RV, you might notice a sticker on the wall stating identifying a mounting location for a TV.

RV manufacturers will typically identify where they installed an additional mounting plate to allow a TV mount to be attached to the wall. If you plan to install a TV, ensure that you have a mounting plate; otherwise, your new TV may be lying cracked on the floor when you get to your destination.

Where to Mount Things:

In your RV, you’ll have several options of where to hang items. The best tip is to mount the items where you need them. For lightweight stuff, you can hang them directly on the walls, using some of the products identified below.

However, don’t limit yourself to walls. You’ll have plenty of flat surfaces in your RV that make great mounting locations for needed items. For example, consider mounting your kitchen hooks or items to the cabinets in your kitchen. The wooden cabinet surfaces create a strong and secure place to hang heavier items and may work well for screws (be sure to predrill a pilot hole in the wood and install the right length wood screws in a thicker edge of the cabinet).

Also, if you’re looking for a place to hang a kitchen towel, consider using strong magnet hooks attached to your stove. You can also place some small hooks inside cabinets to hang small stuff you don’t need to display, like keys, tools, etc.

Screws and Nails

Here’s my take on screws and nails: Use small screws very carefully; avoid nails (even small nails). As mentioned above, RV walls are very thin and don’t always follow a standard construction schematic for stud locations. Also, newer RVs primarily use lightweight aluminum studs,  but they are not always ideal for anchoring things to the wall.

The other concern with screws and nails is that most RVs have wires and even some plumbing run within the walls, which are hard to locate and can be easily punctured with a screw or nail. If you’re going to hang something with a screw, choose the smallest screw adequate for the job. Remember, your RV wall is thin, and a long screw can easily puncture through your exterior wall.

If using a screw, try to locate a stud using a stud finder or taping on the wall to listen for a more solid sound. Locations between studs will sound hollow. The thin walls of the RV may also allow you to push on them and feel the stud location.

When using a screw, avoid using the typical drywall hanging hardware you use at home. The thin material of the interior surface simply can’t hold the weight like drywall. Instead, it’s best to use a screw when you know you can find a stud.

Screws should only be an option if you need to attach something heavy to the wall like a shelf, TV, or wall-mounted appliance. The best way to hang light items is with strong adhesive-type products. Also, if you are permanently installing something heavy, consider using pop rivets (described below)

Also, don’t use nails. You have less control over a nail, and one wrong pound of the hammer can cause damage or push the nail past the point of no return. 

You may also consider using push pins. While they are an excellent way to hang things on surfaces like corkboards, they don’t hold very well in the thin panels of RV walls and will work loose over time. Your best best is to use an adhesive product.

Consider using a pop rivet if you need to permanently install something in your RV, like a wall-mounted appliance, vacuum cleaner, or shelf. While a pop rivet can be removed with the right tool, it is more of a permanent mounting option and a good replacement for a screw.

Pop rivets consist of two parts. The first part is called the rivet body (also known as the shell or hat), and the second part is called the mandrel (also known as the stem). A pop rivet works great when access to both sides of a component is limited, like an RV wall.

First, a small hole is drilled into the surface. Next, a pop rivet is then inserted through the drilled hole, and the rivet body is brought into contact with the parts. Next, a pop rivet gun is placed on it, pulling the mandrel into the rivet body, causing it to expand and grip the parts to be joined. Once gripped, the mandrel snaps, permanently holding the rivet in place.

Since you need to drill a hole to install a pop rivet, these are best used in situations where you plan to mount something permanently. For example, if you’re hanging a shelf, using several pup rivets will help distribute the weight and provide a more solid and capable fastener that can endure more weight than an adhesive hanger.

Many RVers ask about hanging a stick vacuum on a wall. Pop rivets are great for this application. They also work great for mounting something like a wall-mounted electric heater .

Adhesive Options

If you’ve ever visited a hardware store searching for stick-on hanging hardware, you know that your options are vast. A quick search on Amazon will keep you scrolling through dozens of pages of different products. Adhesive hangers will include things like hooks, Velcro strips, picture hangers, etc.

The most important thing to consider when selecting an adhesive hanger is its weight rating and ease of removal. You don’t want to permanently glue something to your RV wall if you don’t need to. Luckily, many different things are available that can be removed if needed.

Side Note:  Take a picture of the removal instructions and store it on your phone. When it comes time to take it off the wall, you want to make sure you follow the product instructions, or you might be left with a damaged wall.

Adhesive Hangers

Velcro makes a great hanger for many options and is available in various configurations like Velcro tape, tabs, and even larger sheets. While it may work for many situations, it may not be the best option for all applications.

When considering Velcro, first decide if you need to be able to remove the item frequently. If not, you may have better success with a non-Velcro option. Adhesive Velcro strips may seem like the best solution, but when using strong bonding Velcro, separating the two sides can be difficult, and it’s easy to pull off the piece attached to the wall, potentially causing damage. I use a lot of consideration when applying a strong Velcro product. 

I like to use Velcro on surfaces that can’t be easily damaged, such as metal, glass, plastic, or cloth. For RV walls panels with wallpaper, I prefer to use pure-adhesive mounts. With that said, Command brand Velcro strips work better than the heavy-duty Velcro tape, and they hold strong and separate more easily.

Command Strips and Hangers 

Command brand hanging solutions and interior RV walls are a perfect combination. They come in all sizes and configurations and with various mounting options. Just pick up the command strip picture hanger if you want to hang a picture. If you need an adhesive hook, the command brand has you covered. As with any adhesive hanger, for best results,  it’s important to apply them to clean surfaces. Command strips and other 3M products come in a variety of sizes and configurations.

When choosing your Command brand hanging option, be sure to follow the weight guidelines and give yourself some additional buffer to account for the stress created when driving down the road.

Also, don’t use these when hanging very heavy objects since they are only as strong as the wall. For example, a heavy-duty hook may hold a lot of weight, but if you throw on a kid’s backpack filled with books, it may be too heavy for the wall, even though the hook can hold it.

If you’re hanging lightweight items, like posters, wall art, or lightweight decorations, then take a look at museum putty. The best part of using museum putty is that it’s easily removable and provides good sticking adhesion for different materials.

Museum Putty is a blended rubber material used by museum professionals and antique dealers to keep items from moving around. While many museums use it to hold items on a flat surface and prevent them from shifting around, it works great for hanging things. Also, since it’s a putty, it can adhere easily to any uneven surfaces, such as wallpaper in your RV.

Museum putty is also inexpensive and a great item to have in your cupboard when you need a quick fix to hang something. For example, if you like to decorate your RV for the holidays, museum putty makes a great decoration hanging option. It’s also strong enough to hang some items like small pictures and knickknacks. Surprisingly, it holds well even when your RV has been sitting in the hot sun all day.

Sticky Tack Tape

Another item that is worthwhile keeping in your junk drawer is clear sticky tape. This tape is similar to museum putty in utility, but it comes in a roll and can be applied to various surfaces. It’s also pretty strong and can be used for various applications.

My favorite brand of sticky tape is Alien Tape. You can also use this tape under items you store on your countertop as a secure way to prevent them from shifting while traveling. In addition, it makes a great utility hanging tool for a wide array of items in your RV.

The sticky tape is also easy to remove, clear, and doesn’t leave a sticky residue when you take it off the wall.

The best tools for the job

Hanging pictures.

I suggest attaching the frame directly to the wall vs. hanging it from a metal picture hanger when hanging framed family photos. The main reason for this is to reduce the potential of the picture from falling while traveling.

Additionally, the weight is concentrated on a single point when you hang something from a hook. By attaching adhesive strips to the edges of the frame, the weight gets distributed over a large wall surface area. While this may not be a huge deal for lightweight picture frames or small items, it may be an important consideration for larger ones.

To hang picture frames, I recommend the Command picture hanging strips . They’re affordable, strong, and easy to remove.

Towel Hangers

I’m guessing that there is some type of ban on towel hooks in Elkhart, Indiana, where most RVs are manufactured. I never understood its reasoning, but it’s a rarity for an RV manufacturer to install a factory town rack in the bathroom.

If you have a need, which I suspect you do, for a way to hang a towel, I recommend sticking with command brand hangers . They make an excellent hook for hanging towels and a towel bar that you can use to hang small towels for drying hands.

 If you’re looking for a place to store folded bath towels, a good option is to install a towel rack like the one below. I recommend using a screw mounted to a stud when installing this, as several towels can add up in weight. I also suggest removing the towels when traveling. Adhesive strips may work, but you’ll be pushing the limit for the heavier rack.

Coat or purse hangers

Some RVs will come with an entry door coat rack, making hanging coats super convenient. If you don’t have a rack, you may want to install self-adhesive wall hooks . Command hooks are the way to go and they come in different color options and finishes.

If you have wall studs available and are comfortable drilling, you may consider adding a coat hooks bar .

Command also makes a coat hook bar that you can install as well. Be sure not to overload them, especially if adding a heavy purse. These hangers are also perfect for things like dog leashes.

Lightweight Posters, maps

Overall, your best option for decorating your RV is to use lighter-weight items. While it’s not always possible, it will simplify your life. When installing lighter items like posters, laminated checklists, or wall decor, Museum putty works great on both rough and smooth surfaces.

Bathroom items

If you need a bathroom organizer that you can hang on the wall of an RV, check out the command shower caddy . While it’s not very big, it provides a good wall-mounted storage option for some of your basic bathroom supplies.

This decorative hanger and mirror organizer makes a great hanger for jewelry and small makeup items in your bathroom or bedroom. It’s really great to see versatile items like this since it’s one-stop shopping for RV solutions. While it’s not large enough for all applications, it’s a nice addon for your basic needs and may work well in your RV bathroom.

Wall Mounted Appliances

When mounting heavier items, a pop rivet is the way to go. As described above, this is the best option for heavy and permanently mounted fixtures and products. The following tool will provide everything you need to get the job done.

Universal mounting

You’ll quickly learn when owning an RV that there are always small projects or needs that pop up from time to time. It’s helpful to have tools ready to tackle them when needed. Hanging items in your RV is something that you’ll surely run into over the years.

I recommend purchasing some utility hangers and adhesives to have on hand when needed. The following two products are great things to store away in your drawer for the time when you need them.

GLUIT Adhesive Hooks for Hanging Heavy Duty Wall Hooks 22 lbs 

These inexpensive hooks available on Amazon are a great option for hanging items on various surfaces in your RV, including walls, inside of cabinet doors, or around the bathroom . They’re very strong and work well.

The main downside to the hooks is that they’re not very attractive. While they have a more utility look, they are great for places that aren’t in key visual locations in your RV. I like these for hanging things on the wall under cabinets, in tight areas, or when the item hanging will cover it up.

While these are strong and provide great adhesion, please follow the instructions when you remove them. If you read the reviews, you’ll notice people complaining of the hooks pulling the paint or wallpaper right off the wall. However, the easiest way is to take a hairdryer and warm them up. They’ll come right off and can be reused. They also work well for exterior walls.

When you get an RV, one of the first things many folks want to do is make it their own. You may choose to do this for decorating, organizing, or simply keeping items within reach. You’ll surely be confronted with the dilemma of needing to hang something on your interior RV wall. When this happens, you don’t need to shy away from it. Many proven products and techniques make this possible without damaging the vinyl walls of your RV. Most options are relatively inexpensive, so simply find the right product for the right application, and you’ll be well on your to make your RV feel a little bit like home.

Engine cover of Southwest Airlines plane comes off during takeoff

The Federal Aviation Administration on Sunday said it will launch an investigation after the engine cowling of a Southwest Airlines plane fell off during takeoff in Denver and struck the wing flap. The cowling is the protective cover over the plane's engine.

Southwest Airlines Flight 3695 returned safely to Denver International Airport around 8:15 a.m. local time on Sunday after the pilot reported the incident, the FAA said. The plane was headed to William P. Hobby Airport in Houston.

In a statement, Southwest Airlines said it is working to get customers on their way to Houston on another aircraft after Flight 3695 landed safely in Denver and that its maintenance teams are reviewing the aircraft.

Frank Sanger, who was on the flight, expressed shock after getting a glimpse of the plane’s state when he deplaned.

“You could see the jet engine had a panel stripped away, all the way around,” Sanger said in an interview that aired Monday on NBC’s “TODAY” show.

This is the second incident in recent days involving a reported malfunctioning of equipment on a Southwest Airlines flight. The FAA is investigating a reported engine fire before takeoff at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport on Thursday.

United Airlines flights have also recently faced safety issues, with eight incidents having been reported in the last two weeks.

Sasha Johnson, the vice president of corporate safety at United, said in a statement that the FAA will be playing a larger role in the company.

"Over the next several weeks, we will begin to see more of an FAA presence in our operation as they begin to review some of our work processes, manuals and facilities," Johnson said.

These incidents come on the heels of skyrocketing scrutiny the airline industry continues to face, with Boeing under investigation by the FAA, Department of Justice and National Transportation Safety Board, following the Alaska Airlines door plug blowout .

Few weeks of any year are bigger or more important for the business of movies than CinemaCon. The annual gathering gives studios, theater owners, and exhibition-minded tech companies a chance to show off the most exciting developments in the movie business. But while the innovations that debut at CinemaCon may have important implications for the theaters where viewers get their film fix, the biggest news out of the convention almost always comes from the stage presentations, where studios show off their biggest gambles.

2024’s CinemaCon was no different, but with more than a hundred titles either shown or mentioned during the event, it can be hard for a regular movie fan to keep up with all the news — especially since most of the trailers and clips previewed at the con aren’t released to the public . So to help you keep track of all the most promising things from the convention, Polygon has put together a list of what we learned from being on the ground at CinemaCon 2024.

2024 is going to be a massive year for animated movies

The demise of animated movies has been greatly exaggerated, as the CinemaCon 2024 lineup shows. Nearly every studio got in on the animated action. Disney and Pixar have massive sequels coming up, including Moana 2 , Inside Out 2 , and a Lion King prequel . Paramount has the first Transformers animated movie in almost 40 years . And Universal is releasing a new Despicable Me movie and a stunning-looking adaptation of the kids’ book The Wild Robot . Perhaps the most surprising addition to this crop is the Warner Bros. entry: Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim , which wasn’t previewed at CinemaCon, but was pitched to exhibitors as “anime” during the studio’s stage show.

With all these movies set for release in the next eight months, 2024 is easily the biggest year for animation since 2019, a year that included The Lion King , Toy Story 4 , Frozen 2 , How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World , The Secret Life of Pets 2 , and The Lego Movie 2 . It’s hard to imagine any year living up to all those huge releases, but with what’s on the calendar so far, 2024 might actually have a chance.

Hollywood has finally recognized Glen Powell as a superstar

Glen Powell has been right on the cusp of superstardom ever since 2018’s Set It Up , but he’s never gotten the opportunities he deserves. But after Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 and Anyone But You in 2023, it looks like 2024 is finally his year. He was a big presence at CinemaCon, coming on stage to introduce a new look at Twisters , where he plays a thrill-seeking tornado chaser with an F5 ego. Paramount also announced him as the lead for its new Running Man reboot, directed by Edgar Wright. With those two star performances on the way, plus Netflix’s hilarious Hit Man set to release this year, Powell is finally getting his time in the spotlight.

Horror fans are going to have a great and busy year

Even in the most tumultuous times at the box office, horror movies are always a reliable bet, which is part of why they were such a standout of this year’s CinemaCon. Every major studio panel featured at least a few scary movies set for 2024, and plenty of them looked positively fantastic.

Disney previewed two scenes from its upcoming Alien: Romulus , which takes the Xenomorph back to its horror roots. Warner Bros. proved it’s bullish on the Shyamalan business, showing off trailers for M. Night’s new movie Trap , a thriller set at a stadium concert that’s too fun to even describe, and The Watchers , the first film from his daughter, Ishana Shyamalan, which follows a girl who gets trapped in the woods by monsters. Meanwhile, Lionsgate is about to release its trilogy of Strangers movies as well as Never Let Go , which has Halle Berry trying to keep her children safe after the apocalypse.

Paramount showed off an impressive horror lineup too, starting with A Quiet Place: Day One on the way, a prequel for the horror series directed by Michael Sarnoski ( Pig ) and set in New York. The studio also revealed the first trailer for Smile 2 , the sequel to its 2022 breakout hit . The movie will apparently follow a pop star played by Naomi Scott, whose fans slowly start to come down with the series’ iconic killer smile.

Finally, Universal may have made the biggest horror bet of the year with Nosferatu , the new vampire movie from The Witch and The Northman director Robert Eggers . It’s set for a massive Christmas Day release. The movie’s first trailer premiered at the show, and it looked absolutely incredible, full of moody shadows, horrified shrieks, and the twisted form of Bill Skarsgård’s ravenous vampire. The studio also showed off Speak No Evil , an eerie remake of a European cult hit from a couple of years ago, and announced sequels for Five Nights at Freddy ’s and M3GAN , though those last two won’t hit theaters until 2025.

Everyone wants to make the next Barbenheimer

Throughout the entire four-day convention, the most popular word on people’s lips was “ Barbenheimer .” Everyone from studios to movie-theater owners to technology companies had something to say about last year’s combined breakout hit(s), Barbie and Oppenheimer , and what it meant for theaters that two totally different movies released on the same day could be box-office sensations. The one thing no one seems to have an answer for was how to do it again.

For the theater owners, Barbenheimer was a sure sign that studios should have no fears about programming their movies against each other, because audiences were more than happy to support two big movies at once. This kind of takeaway certainly makes sense if your main goal is selling tickets and filling seats. Studios seemed to feel similarly, but none of them seemed ready to say what that meant for them.

In fact, the only meaningfully shared date on the calendar so far is Nov. 27, the release date for both Moana 2 and Wicked . While part of Barbenheimer’s strength was that it counterprogrammed two very different movies that audiences were excited to see, it’s hard to imagine a Moana sequel and a Wizard of Oz prequel musical have any audiences that don’t overlap. But while this year’s CinemaCon didn’t have a Barbenheimer announcement, it’s clear that studios are still carefully trying to pick and choose the correct lessons to take away from the phenomenon.
