The Ember Smart Mug 2 is our favorite heated mug thanks to its sleek design and quality performance. Using the Ember app, you can set a temperature range between 120-145 degrees Fahrenheit on your mug to get your favorite temperature. What's nice is if you don't want to use the app, the mug will revert to its previous temperature used (the Smart Mug 2 is set to 135 degrees Fahrenheit out of the box). While the first Smart Mug had some knocks on battery life (around 30 minutes), the new iteration carries up to a strong 80-minute charge, so you won't have to worry about plugging your mug in every time after use anymore.

And as far as safety goes, the Smart Mug 2 can sense movement and liquid and will go into sleep mode when empty or after 2 hours of inactivity.

There are several competitors to the Ember mug out there, but the one that probably comes the closest in terms of design and performance is the SmrtMugg Pro. The price is only about $20 cheaper than the Ember Smart Mug 2, so you won't save a ton going with this option really. But what the SmrtMugg Pro has over the Smart Mug 2 is a longer battery life (up to a whopping 4 hours) and an easier heating method that does not require an app on your phone. Instead of using an app, the SmrtMugg Pro is controlled via the touch method and can be set to temperatures of 95, 113, 131, and 149 degrees Fahrenheit (corresponds to 35, 45, 55, and 65 degrees Celsius).

One qualm about this mug is the touch sensors are too sensitive, so it's easy to sometimes slide your hand over it and accidentally change the temperature, but other than that the device hits its marks in providing reliable use.

COSORI Coffee Mug Warmer & Mug Set

If you're not sure about spending over $100 on a heated mug, then this mug and warmer set from Cosori is the next best option. The mug holds a sizable 17 oz of liquid and features a temperature range that can be set from 77 to 158 degrees Fahrenheit. It's also got an easy-to-hold design and rubber center to help prevent any hot surfaces. The Cosori's best quality overall? It's a wallet-friendly $40, which is a dang good deal if you ask us.

The Travel Mug 2 has the same tech as all the other Ember products; the only difference is it has a travel-friendly shape. What's great about the Travel Mug 2 is it has a touch display, so you can adjust your temperature manually from 120 to 145 degrees Fahrenheit. The display also shows the battery life and, coolest of all, your own personal display name. This is a 12-ounce travel mug that's safe, easy to carry, and reliable. The only downside is it requires a bit of an initial investment.

The ultimate, low-lift device for those who want to see how a heated mug could improve their beverages. All you have to do with this Mr. Coffee Mug Warmer is place your ceramic or stainless steel mug (recommended to only use a stainless steel mug with a non-slip or rubber bottom) and let it sit as the plate warms your drink. The plate measures 4 inches in diameter, so it can accommodate most large mugs. The downside is you do not get a specific reading of your temperature, but based on how hot the plate gets it's likely it gets anywhere from 135 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

As far as safety goes, the plate should be ok on flat surfaces if accidentally left on, but it's important to turn off the switch after every use. There are no automatic safety shut-off switches on it. Think of this device as a mini coffee pot.

An all-ceramic self-heating mug, the Ui Plus from Ohom holds 14-ounces and reaches a temperature of 130 degrees Fahrenheit. The stylish design of the mug is a plus, and what's really cool is the face the warmer actually doubles as a wireless phone charging and earbud charging pad, according to Ohom. The downside to this mug is it only goes to one temperature, but when you consider the versatility of the heated mug and the unique ceramic design, it's certainly a worthy pick to highlight.

Another shining star from Ember, the 6-ounce Smart Cup is optimized for all your espresso-based drinks or tea. It's got the same 120-145 degrees Fahrenheit limit, a generous battery life, and an auto sleep function like the Smart Mug 2. It does not have any touch controls like the Ember Travel Mug 2, however.

commerce breaker

Regular Mug vs. Travel Mug

The best place to start when shopping for a heated mug is asking yourself what your normal drinking habits are . Do you drink your coffee or tea at home? Do you drink it in a travel mug when on the way to work or while at work? This will not only help decide on what type of heated mug to get but also how much you want to spend.

Self-Heating Mug vs. Warming Plate

Next, think about the method by which your mug is heated . You can go with a self-heated mug design, which allows you to move about freely and still have a consistently hot beverage; or you can go with a warming plate design, which will only heat your beverage when set down on the plate but is usually much cheaper than a self-heated mug.

Lid and Capacity

Last to consider is if the mug comes with a lid and how much it holds . A lid is important because it can greatly help trap heat, thus resulting in less battery power needed to keep your beverage at the set temperature . A lid is also nice to have if you ever want to take your mug with you somewhere, like outside on your porch or on the way to the grocery store.

Capacity is obviously important, but the one note we will add when looking at heated mugs is to pay close attention to the listed ounces . Some smart heated mugs might look cheaper than expected, but in reality, it's easy to get tripped up and look at a mug that's 10-ounces, as opposed to 14-ounces.

Is Buying a Self-Heated Mug Worth It?

A self-heated mug is certainly worth investing in for all kinds of hot beverages, but we especially recommend trying one if you're a coffee drinker .

Coffee can change in taste at different temperatures, and so if it's kept too hot or if it's allowed to cool down then you might just feel like you're drinking the beverage to get the caffeine hit . We know some of us see our coffee that way, but in reality, drinking coffee should be enjoyable in taste too.

Reasons for Buying Heated Travel Mugs

There are several compelling benefits to owning a Heated Travel Mug that make it a must-have for anyone who enjoys hot beverages on the go. Whether you’re commuting to work or embarking on a road trip, these handy mugs can provide warmth and convenience that traditional travel cups just can’t match. Here’s a closer look at some of the key reasons why you should consider investing in a Heated Travel Mug for your next adventure.

Keeps drinks warm for longer

Have you ever had a cup of coffee or tea that turned cold before you even had a chance to take a sip? It’s frustrating, especially when you’re on the go or trying to enjoy a leisurely stroll. Heated travel mugs solve this problem by keeping your hot drinks warm for longer periods of time. These mugs feature heating elements that keep your beverages at the desired temperature, so you can savor your coffee or tea on your own terms.

Not only do heated travel mugs keep your drinks warm, but they also prevent spills and leaks. Traditional mugs or cups may tip over or splash liquid if not carefully balanced. However, travel mugs are designed to be spill-proof, making them the perfect option for anyone who is on the go. Whether you’re commuting to work or taking a road trip, heated travel mugs are the ideal solution for keeping your drinks warm and your belongings safe from spills and leaks.

Ideal for traveling and commuting

Heated travel mugs are the perfect solution for those who are always on-the-go. Whether you’re commuting to work, traveling long distances, or just running errands, a heated travel mug can help you keep your drinks warm and ready when you need them. Thanks to their compact size and insulation technology, these mugs are easy to carry around in your backpack, purse, or car without taking up too much space.

Moreover, heated travel mugs are ideal for people who prefer to have their coffee or tea at the right temperature. Rather than having to stop somewhere to find a coffee shop, you can have your favorite beverage with you at all times. This not only saves you time and money but also provides you with the convenience of having your coffee or tea when you want it. Additionally, heated travel mugs are eco-friendly, as they eliminate the need for disposable cups, which are not biodegradable and end up littering the environment.

Prevents spills and messes

Heated travel mugs have become increasingly popular in recent years. They are designed to keep your beverage hot for several hours. One of the key advantages of these mugs is that they can prevent spills and messes. Drinking hot beverages can be challenging when you are on the go. It is not uncommon for your drink to spill and cause a mess on your clothes or in your car. With a heated travel mug, you can eliminate the risk of spilling your drink altogether.

Heated travel mugs are designed with a spill-proof lid that prevents liquid from escaping. These lids have a built-in locking mechanism that keeps them firmly in place. This means that even if your mug accidentally tips over, the liquid will not spill out. Additionally, heated travel mugs are often designed to fit snugly in a car cup holder. This means that you can safely take your drink on the road without worrying about it spilling or sliding around. Overall, heated travel mugs are a convenient and practical solution for those who need to take their hot beverages on the go.

Convenient and easy to use

Heated travel mugs are a convenient and easy option for those who are always on the go. Whether it’s traveling, commuting to work, or running errands, a hot cup of coffee or tea can be a lifesaver. With a heated travel mug, you can have your beverage hot and ready to drink without needing to stop at a coffee shop or heat it up in a microwave.

These mugs are designed to keep your beverages warm for a longer period and ensure that they maintain their optimal temperatures. The heating elements in these mugs are powered by batteries or a USB connection. Many models come with temperature control buttons, allowing you to adjust the temperature of your drink to your liking.

With heated travel mugs, you can enjoy your favorite hot beverages on the go without worrying about spills, leaks, or dirty cups. They are easy to clean, and some models are dishwasher safe. These mugs are also environmentally friendly, as they eliminate the need for disposable cups and reduce waste. The convenience and ease of use of heated travel mugs make them a must-have for anyone who loves their daily caffeine fix.

Buyer’s Guides

To make the most of your daily commute, having a reliable and convenient heated travel mug can transform your mornings. However, it can be overwhelming to navigate the market with so many options to consider. Here are some important factors to keep in mind when searching for the best heated travel mug for your needs.

When buying heated travel mugs, it is important to consider durability. One of the main reasons for this is that these mugs are subjected to rough handling, from being tossed into bags to being jostled around in cup holders. If the mug is not durable enough, it will not last long and may end up failing at a critical moment. Additionally, durability will ensure that the mug can withstand extreme temperatures and prevent any accidents like burns or spillage.

Furthermore, a durable heated travel mug will save you money in the long run. Investing in a high-quality and long-lasting mug is a better option than buying cheaper mugs that will wear out and break more quickly. This means you won’t need to replace them as often and can avoid having to spend money repeatedly. Additionally, a durable mug will provide you with a reliable travel companion for years to come.

Temperature range

When purchasing a heated travel mug, it’s important to consider the temperature range of the mug. This is because different mugs will have different maximum and minimum temperatures at which they can operate. If the temperature range of the mug doesn’t align with your needs, you may end up with a mug that doesn’t heat up enough to keep your drink warm or gets too hot and risks burning your mouth.

Additionally, considering the temperature range is important if you plan to use the mug for different types of beverages. Some mugs may only be suitable for hot liquids like coffee and tea, while others can be used for both hot and cold drinks. Therefore, it’s important to choose a mug with a temperature range that aligns with your needs to ensure that you can use it for whatever beverage you desire.

Battery life

Battery life is a crucial factor to consider when buying heated travel mugs. This is because the whole purpose of a heated travel mug is to keep your beverage warm for an extended period of time. If the battery life of the mug is not sufficient, it will not be able to keep the beverage warm for as long as you need it. Thus, it is essential to choose a heated travel mug that has a battery life that can support your daily needs.

Moreover, if you frequently travel and rely on a heated travel mug to keep your drinks warm, it becomes even more critical to consider the battery life. Long battery life means that you do not have to worry about the mug running out of charge, especially during long journeys. You can comfortably travel with your heated travel mug, knowing that it can maintain optimum temperatures throughout the trip. Therefore, selecting a heated travel mug with a good battery life will make sure that you enjoy a cup of warm coffee or tea at any time without experiencing any disappointments.

Capacity is an important consideration when buying heated travel mugs, as it determines how much liquid you can carry with you. If you are someone who travels for long distances or frequently, you will need to consider a larger capacity mug. A larger capacity will ensure that you have enough coffee or tea to last you throughout your journey, without needing to refill frequently.

Moreover, if you are looking for a heated travel mug for outdoor activities, a smaller capacity might be suitable, as it will be more portable and easy to carry. Small capacity mugs are also suitable for people who prefer to drink fresh beverages regularly, as they will need to refill less often. Therefore, before purchasing a heated travel mug, it is essential to consider your needs and choose a capacity that suits your lifestyle.

Price is always an important factor to consider when buying heated travel mugs because it determines the value for money you are getting. You don’t want to overspend on a product that you can get for a lower price elsewhere. Additionally, you don’t want to compromise on quality just to save a few bucks. By considering the price, you can find a heated travel mug that fits your budget while still meeting your needs and expectations.

It is essential to read the product specifications and reviews before purchasing a heated travel mug to ensure that it meets your requirements. Additionally, factors such as the type of drink, the amount of liquid, and the ambient temperature can also affect the duration of heat retention.

It is important to note that not all heated travel mugs are created equal, some may have a better heating element than others and some may take longer to heat up the liquid. Do Self-Heating Mugs Actually Work?

heated electric travel mug

Although the first step in my work-from-home morning routine is pouring myself a cup of tea , I donā€™t often get around to drinking that tea until Iā€™ve made breakfast, checked emails, responded to any urgent emails, and gotten distracted chatting with co-workers on Slack. By then, my once-steaming mug is usually closer to lukewarm. While I could go through the process of boiling more water , that would also involve waiting for it ā€” and waiting for it to cool back down. At this point, I am ready to drink it, not wait even longer.

At first, I used them casually for my daily tea , just to get a sense of how they worked and how well they maintained their temperatures. Then, after a few days of trying each, I moved to a slightly more scientific testing method, pouring boiling water into each mug and then checking the temperature with a meat thermometer at five-minute intervals for two hours. To add in a ā€œcontrolā€ factor, I also tested a regular ceramic mug as well as a stainless-steel Yeti tumbler . Two of the mugs I tested, Ember and Muggo, allow for precise temperature control, while the OHOM Kopi is designed to stay at 130-degrees. The Burnout also doesnā€™t allow for temperature control, but thatā€™s not a surprise, because itā€™s not electric. The product description explains it should stay at around 140 degrees ā€œfor hours.ā€ To compare them all accurately, I set the Ember and Muggo to 130 degrees. All of the mugs but the Ember have a lid, so I tested them without the lids on to control for that. Iā€™ve also noted how long each mug held a temperature from 125 to 135 degrees. By comparison, a regular mug only stayed in that exact range for around five minutes

Best overall warming mug

Ember Temperature Control Smart Mug 2

Time in temperature range: 1 hour, 35 minutes

In all-white with a matching saucer charger (itā€™s also available in black and metallic copper ), the Ember mug is the most sleek and streamlined of the bunch. Itā€™s the only warming mug I tested that uses an app, connected via Bluetooth. That may sound gimmicky but it is actually pretty useful: On the app, you can set your desired temperature (anywhere from 120 to 145 degrees in single-degree intervals, the most specific control of any mug) and view the current temperature of your drink. Youā€™ll also get notifications once the mug has reached your desired temperature and when it needs to be charged. The only not-so-modern thing about Ember is that thereā€™s no USB charging cord. The saucer charger has to be plugged into an actual outlet which isnā€™t always the most convenient.

During casual use I set the Ember mug to 140 degrees (which, thanks to all these temperature measuring gadgets, I recently discovered is my preferred tea temperature) and found that it stayed around there until I finished my tea around an hour later. My slightly more scientific testing proved it be even more effective: It stayed within seven degrees of the set temperature for 95 minutes.

TL;DR: Ember is a sleek, app-controlled mug that will keep your beverage at a set temperature anywhere from 120 to 145 degrees and itā€™s mostly accurate based on my testing. The only downside is thereā€™s no USB charger. Although I did not test it, Ember also makes a travel tumbler with similar features, if thatā€™s more appealing to you.

Best travel warming mug

Muggo 12 oz Temperature Control Mug

Time in temperature range: 1 hour, 15 minutes

Although it doesnā€™t have an app like Ember, the Muggo tumbler is very easy to control, as you can adjust the temperature in five-degree intervals from 95 to 150 degrees by pressing right on the LED display on the tumbler itself. (The tumbler also displays the current temperature at all times.) The spring-loaded lid pops up and down with a single press, so itā€™s easy to drink from on the go, too. Instead of sitting on a charging saucer, Muggo has a removable battery that magnetically attaches to a charging pad. The charging pad can keep the mug charged while youā€™re sitting at your desk, and also charge up the battery for when itā€™s time to go.

In my testing, Muggo performed fairly similarly to the Ember mug. Once it cooled down to the set temperature, it stayed there for over an hour.

TL;DR: Muggo is an effective self-warming travel tumbler with an easy-to-use interface and accurate temperature settings from 95 to 150 degrees. It can be charged directly on its USB-powered charging pad, or you can remove the battery and charge it separately.

Best-looking (but less-effective) warming mug

OHOM Kopi Self-Heating Mug

Time in temperature range: 15 minutes

With its curvy pear-shape, the Kopi mug has a more design-y and attractive look than the Ember and comes in pretty shades like ā€œfresh mintā€ and ā€œcupcake pinkā€ thatā€™ll certainly brighten up your desktop. Thereā€™s no app to control it, however, and no way to customize the temperature. Instead, itā€™s designed to stay at 130 degrees at all times. Its charging saucer can be connected to a USB port and actually doubles as a wireless phone charger, which is convenient. But it gets hot while warming the mug, so youā€™ll have to wait for it to cool down to drop your phone on it.

While the Ember saucer and Muggo battery hold their charges when unplugged, the Kopi actually needs to be sitting on its saucer, while plugged into a USB port or outlet to work, which makes it a bit less convenient. During testing, it didnā€™t perform as well as the other two, either. Although itā€™s supposed to maintain a temperature of 130 degrees, it only did so for around 15 minutes before cooling down.Ā Another thing to note is that the Kopi doesnā€™t heat evenly ā€” the heat disseminates from the base so the liquid on the bottom of the mug is consistently warmer than the liquid toward the top.

TL;DR: While the colorful Kopi gets points for cuteness, it loses some for functionality. Thereā€™s no way to customize the temperature (itā€™s designed to stay at 130 degrees), and it will only work if itā€™s sitting on the charging coaster while the coaster is actually plugged in. Even then, it performs better than a non-warming mug, but not as well as Ember or Muggo. One added plus: The coaster will also charge your phone.

Best nonelectric warming mug

Burnout Temperature Regulating Travel Mug

Time in temperature range: 1 hour, 30 minutes

Even though it isnā€™t a rechargeable electric warming mug, Burnoutā€™s specs ā€” that it was invented by aerospace engineers and claims to be better at warming than the gold-standard vacuum-sealed tumblers ā€” caught my eye. A tall, slim travel tumbler with a slide-open lid, Burnout looks unassuming from the outside but promises to pack a lot of technology inside. Its inner stainless-steel layers are separated by a chamber of a phase-changing material that turns from solid to liquid as it absorbs heat, and then back to liquid as it releases heat back through the steel to keep your drink warm.

Ten minutes into testing, I was a little surprised to see that the water in the Burnout mug was actually cooler than the water in the regular mug. However, when I did some reading about Burnout I learned that itā€™s designed to reach a drinkable temperature fast and stay there for a long time. And thatā€™s exactly what it did. Although thereā€™s no way to set the temperature on the Burnout, it remained in a drinkable range (around 120 to 140 degrees) for a solid hour and 45 minutes. Compared to the Yeti, the other stainless-steel tumbler in my trial, it got down to the drinkable temperature faster, hitting 138 degrees within 15 minutes (the Yeti was still at a too-hot-to-drink 174 degrees at this point). Also, once the Yeti hit that sweet spot of around 140 degrees, it declined more rapidly than the Burnout, falling below 120 degrees two hours into testing.

TL;DR: The best thing about the nonelectric Burnout mug is that it cools your drink down from boiling to a drinkable temperature faster than your standard stainless-steel tumbler ā€” and keeps it there longer. While you canā€™t set a specific temperature, thereā€™s no need to worry about keeping it charged. Plus, itā€™s the cheapest option.

The Best Travel Mug

Four different travel mugs next to each other.

By Trey French and Anna Perling

Hot drinks are a daily staple for many, and just as important as the beverage is the travel mug that keeps it warm while youā€™re on the go.

After a decade of testing travel mugs, we still recommend the Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug for most people. It keeps drinks hot for hours, and its locking lid stays securely closed, even when you toss the mug into a bag. We also have another option, which fits better in most cup holders, for use while youā€™re driving.

Everything we recommend

Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug

The best travel mug.

This mug offers the best heat retention, plus one-handed usability and a locking, leakproof lid, which makes it especially useful if you carry your mug in a bag or backpack.

Buying Options

Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug (16 ounces)

A wider mug for drivers.

This wider mug fit securely in our testersā€™ cup holders, and its spill-proof lid design is good for rough roads. It doesnā€™t retain heat as well as the Zojirushi mugā€”a fact that some people might actually appreciate.

OXO Good Grips Water Bottle Cleaning Set

For cleaning your mug.

This bottle-cleaning set has a skinny straw brush and a looped detail-cleaning brush, which are all you need to keep your travel mug squeaky clean.

The 16-ounce Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug keeps beverages hot for hours, even in cold environments. It has a well-designed exterior, an easy-to-clean nonstick Teflon interior, and a foolproof lid-locking mechanism that you can operate with one hand.

The mug is lightweight and slim, but it may not fit snugly in some cup holders. However, thanks to its locking lid, we were comfortable carrying it around in a bag, without worrying about leaks.

This Zojirushi model is pricey for a travel mug, but this is the mug we trust most not to spill in a bag, and itā€™s hard to put a price on that. (Actually, that would be about the price of a new bag, laptop, phone, and whatever else happened to be in there at the time.)

Itā€™s also available in a 20-ounce version .

Like other Zojirushi products, it comes with a five-year warranty.

The 16-ounce Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug is wider and fits better in most car cup holders than the Zojirushi mug. The lid has an auto-sealing button that prevents spills, and when you drink, it wonā€™t block your view of the road ahead.

Although this Stanley model may not keep drinks as hot as the Zojirushi mug, some people might prefer such resultsā€”weā€™ve heard many complaints over the years of the Zojirushi mug keeping drinks too hot.

Both the mug and the lid are dishwasher safe, but the lid has fewer parts than that of our top pick, so it is easier to disassemble and hand-wash if you prefer to clean it that way.

And letā€™s not forget that these things need cleaning regularly. Thatā€™s why we also have a bottle-brush recommendation for when you need to clean out the gunk .

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked, how we tested, our pick: zojirushi sm-sf stainless steel mug (16 ounces), also great: stanley classic trigger-action travel mug (16 ounces), also great: oxo good grips water bottle cleaning set, other good travel mugs, the competition.

Weā€™ve been testing travel mugs since 2013. Previous versions of this guide were written and researched by SĆ©amus Bellamy and Anna Perling. In 2023, staff writer Trey French wrote the latest update to this guide. He gained an appreciation of high-performing insulated drinkware while spring camping in Colorado when the temperatures dropped below freezing.

In addition to conducting our own tests, we spoke to engineers and industry professionals about mug design, ideal coffee and tea drinking temperatures, and the best way to find out how long coffee will really stay good in a travel mug.

Travel mugs, as their name implies, are for people who want to take beverages on the go. Compared with paper or Styrofoam cups, a good travel mug offers better insulation and safeguards against leaks or spills. In addition, you can save money in the long run and reduce your environmental impact by using a travel mug.

Tumblers, thermoses, and insulated water bottles are all close cousins to the travel mug but have some important differences:

  • Tumblers have sipping ports that donā€™t seal as tightly or securely as on travel mugs and have wider mouths for you to add ice cubes. Many also have straws for you to sip cold beverages.
  • Thermoses usually lack the slim size and lid-design features that make travel mugs portable and convenient. With a thermos, instead of popping open a lid to take a sip, you need to unscrew the cap and pour liquid into an open cup to drink.
  • Insulated water bottles are geared toward keeping drinks cold and donā€™t have sipping ports like travel mugs do. Instead, they often have screw-top lids that require two hands to open and close, or they have sport caps, which arenā€™t great for hot drinks.

To determine which travel mugs to test, we look for mugs that advertise the following qualities:

Vacuum-insulated: All of the mugs we consider are double-walled and vacuum-insulated .

Capable of retaining heat all day: We look for mugs that claim to keep hot beverages drinkably warm for at least eight hours.

Made of stainless steel: Stainless steel is more durable than glass or ceramic and retains heat better than plastic. Itā€™s also the best material for vacuum insulation and therefore heat retention.

Leakproof and spill-proof: A leakproof seal keeps a closed lid from leaking if the mug jostles. A spill-proof seal guards against spills should you drop the mug or knock it over; such seals typically incorporate a push button, like the one found on the Stanley Classic Trigger-Action.

Easy to use: A good mug should be easy to both open and close, as well as to lock and unlock, with one hand. It should also be easy to disassemble for cleaning. We look for mugs that advertise these features or have reviews indicating that they are easy to use.

Between 12 and 20 ounces in capacity: Weā€™ve concluded that 16 ounces is the optimal capacity for a travel mug, as it delays the need for a refill while remaining portable and easy to hold. Some people prefer wider mugs that donā€™t rattle in cup holders, while others like slimmer mugs that take up less space in backpacks or bags. We test both styles.

After considering the everyday wear and tear that a travel mug might go through in real-world scenarios, we devised tests to mimic those scenarios. During our tests, we use the mugs daily, evaluating them for simple enjoyability.

  • Leak and spill tests: We test mugs for leaky seals by shaking them upside down, dropping them, and carrying them in bags.
  • Drop test: We drop each mug three times from a height of 4 feet onto asphalt.
  • Insulation test: We fill each mug with boiling water and then measure how quickly the water cools over eight hours, checking every hour.
  • Ease of cleaning: We wash each mug, following instructions; we also take apart their lids and wash those. We check for lingering smells and to see if the finish on the mug is harmed.
  • Cup holder compatibility: We test the mugs in cup holders of varying sizes (2.75, 3.5, and 3.75 inches in diameter).

A blue Zojirushi SM-SF Stainless Steel Mug.

The 16-ounce Zojirushi SM-SF Stainless Steel Mug is the best travel mug for keeping drinks hot for long periods of time. This mug also comes in a 20-ounce size. (The SM-SF is the current model; these model designations often change from year to year, but the mugs themselves stay the same.)

It kept our drinks the hottest. According to the Specialty Coffee Association of America, the best temperature range for coffee is 145 to 155 degrees Fahrenheit. After sitting for eight hours in the Zojirushi mug in a 72-degree room, our water measured 158 degreesā€”hotter than in any other mug we tested. That translates to hot coffee over a full workday. (If youā€™re opening the mug more frequently than once an hour, however, it might cool a bit faster.)

It wonā€™t leak. It has sturdy, leakproof seals and a simple locking mechanism. Just close the lid, switch the lock into position, and youā€™re guaranteed that the top wonā€™t pop open when you donā€™t want it toā€”when youā€™re carrying the mug in a bag, for instance.

An open lid on the Zojirushi mug.

Itā€™s easy enough to keep clean. The nonstick interior helps to prevent odors and stains, though the mugā€™s instructions do warn against storing milk or fruit juices in the mug. (If you prefer drinking from a vessel that doesnā€™t have a nonstick coating, you might consider the Zojirushi SM-KHE , which has an electro-polished stainless steel interior.) The narrow girth makes it hard to get a sponge inside, but using a bottle brush circumvents that problem. You can disassemble the plastic lid to clean out any gunk that might be lodged in hard-to-reach places, although the small plastic and silicone parts can be difficult to get on and off the lid.

The Zojirushi mug laying on its side.

Itā€™s durable. Though this mug developed a few scuffs in our drop tests, it acquired no more than the other mugs we tried, some of which fared far worse. Zojirushi backs the vacuum insulation of its stainless steel mugs with a five-year limited warranty, and the company sells individual replacement parts online .

Itā€™s simple. The Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug has an attractive design thatā€™s minimalist yet eye-catching in its simplicity.Ā  The 20-ounce version comes in only one color (navy), but our pick, the 16-ounce version, comes in three (navy, pale pink, mint blue).

How the Zojirushi mug has held up

The Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug might be the single most commonly owned and used product among Wirecutter staffers; it has traveled in many crowded bags, backpacks, and purses without any problems. One staff member did report that after eight years of use, hers finally developed a leak. Another colleague says that their mug has survived drops onto cement (once from a third-floor balcony) without suffering more than a dent.

Zojirushi specifies hand-washing only, but we know of several mugs that have survived accidental trips through the dishwasher without any noticeable decrease in performance, though the external paint has flaked as a result.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • The Zojirushi mug is sometimes too good at insulating. Weā€™ve found that if we pour fresh coffee directly into the mug, the liquid can stay scalding hot for hours. To prevent burning your mouth, let your beverage cool a little before closing the lid.
  • Itā€™s not cup holder friendly. This model, which is more narrow than a typical travel mug, did not fit snugly in our testersā€™ car cup holders. If you prefer a travel mug with a larger circumference, check out our also-great pick.
  • It isnā€™t spill-proof. Though the SM-SF is leakproof, it isnā€™t spill-proof like our also-great pick; the design lacks an automatic seal to prevent liquid from spilling if you drop the mug while youā€™re drinking.

A white Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug.

The 16-ounce Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug is our recommendation for use in a car, as itā€™s a great spill-proof mug that keeps drinks hot and fits in a cup holder.

Itā€™s designed for drivers. Wider than the Zojirushi mug, this Stanley model fit more securely in our testersā€™ car cup holders. The top of the mug is narrower than the base, though, to help reduce heat loss through the lid. (Experts told us that the lid is where a double-walled mug loses the most heat.) And the design has no pop-up lid to bump your nose or block your eyes while youā€™re drinking.

A close-up of the cap of a white Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug.

Itā€™s spill-proof, unlike the Zojirushi mug. You do need to hold down a button to keep the sipping port open to drink from the mug, which may be frustrating to some people. However, this design prevents spillsā€”whether from rough roads, say, or if you accidentally knock the mug over while reaching for itā€”since the mug closes automatically. Other mugs we tested, such as the Contigo Autoseal Transit and West Loop (both former runners-up), had similar buttons, but the button on the Classic Trigger-Action was easier to press and hold. Unlike the Zojirushi model, this mug has no lock to secure its lid, but it never leaked in our tests.

It keeps drinks hot long enough. The Classic Trigger-Action canā€™t keep your beverages quite as hot for quite as long as our top pick can, but that might be a plus for those who complain that the Zojirushi mug keeps drinks too hot. When we boiled water and let it sit in this Stanley mug, the water took only three hours to cool to 158 degrees (whereas water in the Zojirushi mug took eight hours to reach that temperature). After eight hours, the water in the Classic Trigger-Action measured 132 degreesā€”26 degrees cooler than the water in the Zojirushi mug. If you drink your beverages quickly or donā€™t want to wait for them to cool down before sealing your mug, the Classic Trigger-Action may be a better option for you.

Itā€™s tough. This mug endured our drop tests, sporting only light scuffing on the plastic lid and minor dents at the side of the base of its body. Like Zojirushiā€™s five-year warranty, Stanleyā€™s lifetime warranty covers only manufacturer defects, not damage to mug components due to accidents or wear. Should you damage the lid or simply lose it, you can buy a replacement lid .

Itā€™s dishwasher safe. Both the mug body and the lid can go in the dishwasher. The lid has some hard-to-reach nooks and crannies, so be sure to disassemble it for the best cleaning results. Stanleyā€™s lid has fewer pieces than Zojirushiā€™s lid and is easier to take apart.

You have more color choices. If you care about colors, the Classic Trigger-Action comes in manyā€”about a dozen at last count. This mug also comes in a 20-ounce size .

The OXO Good Grips Water Bottle Cleaning Set is the best bottle-cleaning set. It comes with a large bottle brush, a skinny straw brush, and a looped detail-cleaning brush, all kept together on a handy ring so you wonā€™t lose any of the parts. The set is dishwasher safe, and we found that it works well for anyone looking to remove gunk from travel mugs and other hard-to-clean items.

A GSI MicroLite 500 Flip travel mug.

If you want a mug with a locking lid for about half the price of our top pick: Consider the GSI Microlite 500 Flip , which keeps liquids almost as hot as the Zojirushi mug and has a similar one-handed flip top with a lock.

However, when we dropped this GSI mug to the ground when the lid was unlocked, the lid popped open and spilled coffee everywhereā€”and the exact same thing happened when we dropped it a second time. Eventually, we dropped the mug enough, accidentally, to break the lid; GSI does sell replacement lids.

This mug, which has a large sipping port, also has a higher flow rate than our picks, and may require more careful sipping when the beverage is really hot.

An MiiR 360 Traveler.

If the Zojirushi mug is out of stock: You might look into the MiiR 360 Traveler , which in our tests kept drinks almost as hot and resisted denting just as well as our top pick. When itā€™s unlocked, its sipping port allows you to drink from anywhere on the lidā€™s circumference. We decided not to make it a pick because we struggled to decipher whether the sipping port was open or closedā€”which in turn led to spills. Unlike some twist-to-open 360-degree ports, the MiiR 360 Travelerā€™s lid has a push button for operation that forms the center of the lid, and at a glance, it looks nearly the same whether closed or open.

The mug is also available in a flip-top version called the Flip Traveler , but weā€™ve found flip-top lids prone to breaking during our drop tests. The mug bodies for the 360 Traveler and the Flip Traveler are the same, and the lids are interchangeable, in case you buy one and then decide that youā€™d like to try the other.

Weā€™ve considered and evaluated several other Zojirushi travel mugs throughout our testing. Hereā€™s a breakdown:

  • Zojirushi SM-WR : Almost identical to the SM-SF series, this version has an integrated gasket, which reduces the total pieces to clean. We like it almost as much as our top pick. However, it dispenses a little faster than the SM-SF, which is good for cold drinks but can be too much for really hot drinks.
  • Zojirushi SM-YAE : This 16-ounce mug costs a little more than our main pick. It comes with an electro-polished interior, like the Zojirushi SM-KHE, but has a shape thatā€™s stouter than other Zojirushi mugs and short enough to fit under the spout of a single-cup brewing machine. In our tests, however, it fell short of our picks in insulating performance: After eight hours, the water temperature had dropped to 100 degrees, 58 degrees cooler than the water in our top pick.
  • Zojirushi SM-SHE : We were reluctant to test this mug due to persistent stock issues. Zojirushi sent us one to try out anyway, but it broke during our drop test.
  • Zojirushi SM-JHE : We opted not to test this mug because it has a wide-mouth, screw-off lid.
  • Zojirushi SM-JTE : We also elected not to test this model, which has a tea-leaf filter, due to its screw-off lid.

The JoeVeo Temperfect Javabliss 16 Travel Mug brings a scalding drink down to a drinkable temperature and holds it there by using a third layer in its wall to capture excess heat and then release it over time. It isnā€™t leakproof or spill-proof, though.

The 17-ounce Kinto Travel Tumbler insulates wellā€”so well that it was the third-best contender at insulating in our tests behind the Zojirushi SM-SF and GSI Microlite 500 Flip. Drinking from it requires fully removing the lid, though, as well as finding a place to put the lid.

After dismissing previous iterations of the Hydro Flask travel mug, we tested the 20-ounce Hydro Flask Coffee Cup with Flex Sip Lid , and it was a clear improvement over older models. It kept drinks hot for about a half day, and it resisted denting better than about half of the other tested mugs. The lid requires two hands to open and close, however, so it can be tough to open while youā€™re distracted, and it has a tendency to ā€œburpā€ a small amount of liquid when you rotate the lid from closed to open.

The 16-ounce OXO Good Grips Thermal Mug with SimplyClean Lid resemblesā€”and insulates about as well asā€”the Hydro Flask mug we tested, keeping drinks hot for a half day. It also shares that modelā€™s flaws, requiring two hands to open and close, and burping some liquid.

The Klean Kanteen Insulated Wide Mouth Water Bottle was a previous runner-up in this guide, as well as a former insulated water bottle pick, but we found that the lid occasionally leaked when we left the bottle on its side overnight.

The 18-ounce Purist Mover with Scope Lid insulates nearly as well as our picks and has a 360-degree sip lid, which lets you drink from any side of the mug. It requires two hands to open and close, though.

We broke the flip-top lid of the 20-ounce Welly Traveler , as well as the glued-on product-label plate on the bottom of the mug, the first time we dropped it.

The 12-ounce Ketiee Travel Mug is cheaper than most mugs we looked at, and we wondered what weā€™d get for the price. It kept drinks hot for about two hours during our tests, scoring near the bottom. Our main complaint is that the molding process left a pointy knob on our test unit, right above the drinking port, that pressed into our testersā€™ noses. Also, the product page states that itā€™s spill-proofā€”and we found that it wasnā€™t, whether the flip-top lid was open or closed.

The promise of the battery-powered Ember Travel Mug 2 is that it allows you to keep your beverage at a specific temperature (up to 145 degrees) for three hoursā€”if you remember to charge it. Without the battery, it scored at the bottom on our insulation test; we also managed to break its inner seal during our drop test. Although we like the standard Ember Mug 2 (read more in our mug warmers guide ), we canā€™t recommend this even more expensive sibling.

The Contigo Autoseal West Loop Travel Mug was one of our previous runners-up, and like the Stanley Classic Trigger-Action , it has a button that you need to push before you can drink. The West Loop didnā€™t hold up as well in our drop tests as the Stanley model did, and we found its vertical push button harder to use than the one on our current also-great pick.

Take Our Word for It

What is real simple selects.

Real Simple / Catherine Cox

If you want to sip on a continually warm cup of coffee or tea, a coffee mug warmer will keep your drink of choice at a set temperatureā€”no lukewarm brews here. Coffee mug warmers are ideal for anyone who likes to leisurely drink their coffee without reheating it or making a fresh brew when the cup cools.

ā€œA lot of people will notice that their coffee tastes differently as it cools because the lactones in the coffee break down and the flavor can become a bit more acidic or sour," says Olivia Laskowski , the marketing lead at Partners Coffee. ā€œA warmer [coffee] preserves the lactones longer, which means that your coffee will maintain its flavor for longer periods of time.ā€

To find the best coffee mug warmers, we tested 16 models in real-world conditions over a month-long trial period. In addition to Laskowski, we consulted Adriana Uriostegui , a brewing trainer at Talitha Coffee, for her expert insight on how coffee mug warmers work and what to look for while shopping for one.

Best Overall Coffee Mug Warmer

Nextmug self-heating coffee mug.

  • Design 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 5 /5

It can keep your drink hot for up to four hours.

It doesn't have an auto-shut-off or smart features.

The Nextmug Temperature-Controlled Mug is our top pick because it offers four hours of consistent heat (with the lid on), which is longer than most picks on our list. It also has three heat settings; warm, hot, and piping, so you can tailor your cup to your temperature of choice. We also liked that the mug kept our drink hot without overheating and losing freshness and that it comes with a lid too, which is ideal for when youā€™re on the go. However, its shape doesnā€™t fit in a standard vehicle drink holderā€”so you may have to hold it while driving.Ā

While the brand says the mug stays heated for four hours, we found that the battery began losing charge after an hour. And because it takes about three hours to charge completely, you may want to plug it in the night before. Although the mug is above the average price of a coffee mug warmer, we think it's a worthy investment for slow sippers, those who work from home, and coffee enthusiasts.

Best Budget Coffee Mug Warmer

Cosori original coffee warmer & mug.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Performance 4.5 /5
  • Ease of Use 4.8 /5

You can adjust the temperature of the warming plate.

There is no auto shut-off function.

This 17-ounce stainless steel mug warmer set from Cosori is a steal compared to other coffee mug warmers on our list. In addition to its affordable price, we also loved the slip-resistant sleeve that allows you to hold your mug while itā€™s hot. While reasonably priced, this mug has high-quality features like a touchscreen on the warming pad that you can set to your preferred temperature. The temperature ranges from 77 to 230 degrees Fahrenheit, so you can keep your drink anywhere from room temperature to steaming hot.Ā

Although this pick includes a stainless steel mug, you can use any compatible mug on its warming pad. Keep in mind that you may not get the same heating effect if you use a ceramic or stainless steel mug with a thicker base. The only downsides we noticed were a slight aftertaste in our coffee (possibly due to the stainless steel construction) and that this mug doesn't have an auto shut-off function.

Dimensions: 5.4 x 0.7 x 4.3 inches | Power Source : Electric | Temperature Control: Yes | Auto Shut-Off: No

Best Coffee Mug Warming Plate

Kin element mug warmer and lid set.

  • Design 4.8 /5
  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5

It features a four-inch rimless base that you can use with extra-large mugs and teapots.

It might not be the best option for those on the go.

For anyone who wants to use their mug for a hot beverage, the Kin Element Mug Warmer is an appealing option. This warmer padā€™s four-inch rimless design can accommodate large mugs, French presses, and teapots. It also has three heat settings ranging from 120 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit and comes with a 6-foot cord and BPA-free silicone lid to keep your drink warm. In our testing, we found that the included heat-trapping lid made a noticeable difference in the temperature of our coffee and tea.

The Kin Element has a manual on/off button on the warmer, plus an auto-shut-off function if there is no mug on the plate for five minutes. Conversely, if you accidentally leave your mug heating, it will shut off after eight hours.Ā One thing to keep in mind: This product is advertised as a candle warmer, too, but we found that it cracked the glass container of a three-wick candle and didn't melt the wax after 30 minutes. For this reason, we do not recommend using the warming plate with a glass mug or candle.

Dimensions: 4.5 x 4.5 x 1 inches | Power Source: Corded electric | Temperature Control:Ā  Yes | Auto Shut-Off: Yes

Best Smart Coffee Mug Warmer

Ember mug 2.

You can adjust temperature settings manually or via the app.

It only holds 10 ounces of coffee.

If youā€™re a slow sipper, the Ember Mug 2 is a must-have addition to your morning routine. You can use the connected Ember app to control the mugā€™s functions, set the temperature to your liking, and customize presets. While we love this smart functionality, this mug works just fine without the app, though you wonā€™t be able to adjust the temperature (it defaults to 135 degrees Fahrenheit) or view battery life.Ā Ā

As long as the battery is charged, your coffee stays hot in the cup for around 90 minutes. If you want it hot longer, you can keep it on the charging coaster included with the mug. It has an LED light at the base to indicate when your drink is warming up or cooling, and when the mug has a low charge.Ā Even though our drinks were always super hot, the mug and handle were never too hot to hold. This pick also has an auto-sleep function that turns the mug off if empty or idle for over two hours.Ā

The only downside is that the mug only holds 10 ounces, which is smaller than some other options we tested. Also, itā€™s hand-wash only. The price is higher than averageā€”but we think the performance, quality, and smart features make it worth the price.

Dimensions: 6 x 5 inches | Power Source: Battery, corded electric warming plate | Temperature Control: Yes | Auto Shut-Off: Yes

Best Stylish Coffee Mug Warmer

Ohom ui self-heating mug set.

  • Performance 4.8 /5

It uses electromagnetic energy to self-heat the mug.

There is only one temperature setting.

Instead of batteries, the 12-ounce Ohom Ui Self-Heating Mug uses electromagnetic energy to keep your drink piping hot. The mug has metallic sensors that self-heat when off the charging plate. It also comes with a stainless steel filter, so you can brew coffee directly in your cup.Ā

While its features are modern, the mug is made of hand-crafted ceramic, so it feels homey to drink out of (just like your regular coffee cup ). Itā€™s also one of the few dishwasher-friendly mugs on our list. The set includes a mug, lid, wireless heating pad, USB cord, and a charging brick.

Using the Ohom is pretty straightforwardā€”there is no on-off switch, just plug and unplug to turn it on and off. Though it comes with a lid to keep your drink hot for longer, we observed that it didnā€™t make much differenceā€”our drink was consistently warm whether we used the lid or not.Ā Plus, the charging plate can wirelessly charge your phone and earbuds, too. Our only criticism of the Ohom is that it only has one temperature setting at 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dimensions:Ā  3.5 x 3.75 inches | Power Source: USB type C cable, plug | Temperature Control: No | Auto Shut-Off: Yes

Best Coffee Mug Warmer With Lid

Vsitoo s3pro smart mug 2.

The mug has a light bar that indicates temperature.

The taste of the beverage changed slightly over an extended time period.

Made from double-vacuumed stainless steel, the Vsitoo S3 Pro Smart Mug 2 keeps liquids hot or cold for up to eight hours on a single charge. It also has a BPA-free lid, so you can easily take it on the go.Ā Ā

You can control the temperature using the Vsitoo app or the button on the bottom of the mug. If you prefer to change the temperature settings on the mug itself, we suggest doing that before you pour your drink, as it might be difficult to adjust the settings after the liquids are inside. The mug has a temperature range of 95 to 149 degrees Fahrenheit, a temperature light bar with colored lights (blue, orange, red, and green), and a warming function that keeps your drink below 100 degrees Fahrenheit.Ā

We were impressed with the charge time of the Vsitoo, which was half the time of the average coffee mug warmer. It only took 30 minutes for a full charge, which lasted about a week during our testing. However, we found that leaving our drink in the mug for an extended period negatively affected the taste.

Dimensions: 3.5 x 4.6 inches | Power Source: Battery, corded electric plate | Temperature Control : Yes | Auto Shut-Off: Yes

Real Simple / Michael Navarro

Best Coffee Mug Warmer for Espresso

This compact pick is ideal for espresso, cortados, or flat whites.

You cannot manage any of the settings on the cup or warming plate.

The Ember Self-Warming Espresso Cup is a small replica of the Ember Smart Mugā€”it only holds 6 ounces, so it's well suited to espresso drinkers. During testing, we tried this mug with various hot drinks including coffee, hot chocolate, cider, coffee with creamer, and tea, evaluating how long they stayed hot and if the taste changed over time. We found that even when our drink was in the cup for hours, it never developed a burnt or bitter taste and still tasted fresh.Ā

It has a simple design, with no extra buttons or switches. You can charge the cup on the warming plate for a battery life of 90 minutes or keep it on the charging plate for as long as you need. Additionally, it has an auto-shut-off function that switches the mug off when empty or after two hours of inactivity.Ā

You can control the Ember with the connected app, where you can tailor your preferred temperature and presets. When your phone is out of reach or you don't want to use the app, the Ember will automatically use your previous settings or heat to 135 degrees Fahrenheit out of the box. If unsure which temperature is best for your drink, check the app for suggestions.

Dimensions: 5.4 x 6.1 inches | Power Source: Battery, corded electric warming plate | Temperature Control: Yes | Auto Shut-Off: Yes

Real Simple / Maria Ridgway

Best Travel Coffee Mug Warmer

Ember travel mug 2.

  • Performance 4 /5

It has bonus features including a touch-activated screen.

The lid may splash coffee, so be careful when opening the mug.

Ember also has a 12-ounce travel mug in its repertoire for when you need to take your beverage on the road. It looks like a regular insulated travel mug, except it has high-tech features like a tracking device (that syncs with Apple's Find My technology) and a digital nameplate on the display screen. The outside of the mug is sleek and modern, and has a ridge for a firm grip. It also has an invisible LED screen that comes to life when you touch the Ember logo, which allows you to adjust the temperature and alerts you when the beverage is too hot to drink. You can also use the Ember app to control the settings, create personalized presets, and view the mugā€™s battery level.

This smart mug also has an auto-off function that will turn off the warmer if itā€™s empty or there is no activity for two hours, but once you put your drink inside, it will heat again. Although the mug can keep liquids hot for up to 90 minutes, youā€™ll have to bring the charging mat to keep your drink hot longer. A spill-proof 360-degree lid allows you to sip your coffee from any angleā€”but during testing, we noticed that the lid splashed some coffee when we opened it. Ā

Dimensions: 3 x 8 inches | Power Source: Battery, corded electric warming plate | Temperature Control: Yes | Auto Shut-Off: Yes

Real Simple / Russell Kilgore

The Nextmug Temperature-Controlled Mug is our top pick for its self-heating function that helps your beverage stay hot for up to four hours on a single charge. If you want something more affordable, opt for the Cosori Original Coffee Warmer & Mug ā€”just note that it doesn't have an auto shut-off switch.

We rounded up 16 of the best coffee mug warmers and put them through a series of tests in real-world conditions for one month. To start, we observed what kind of power source it used, its battery life, and whether it had an automatic shut-off.

Next, we incorporated the mug warmer into our daily coffee/tea routine; and used it at least twice a week for the month. We noted factors such as how long it took us to finish our cup, how well the mug warmer held the temperature, and whether it retained the flavor of our drinks.Ā

At least once during the testing period, we allowed our beverage to sit on the warmer for one hour undisturbed. We tasted our beverage before and after the hour of warming, evaluating whether the taste or temperature changed.Ā

For certain models, we noted how long and how many times we could use the product before recharging it. Finally, we considered how easy it was to clean and whether it was dishwasher-safe or hand-wash only.

Real Simple / Denisse Netting

How to Shop for Coffee Mug Warmers Like a Pro

Mug compatibility.

Consider your mugā€™s size, shape, and material to decide if itā€™s compatible with your warmer. Many mug warmers are sold as a set and work only with the mug that comes with it, according to Laskowski.Ā

ā€œSome mug warmers (like the Ember Mug) include a specific cup that is compatible with the warming base,ā€ she says. ā€œBut, if you prefer to be able to use your own mugs, most warmers will work with glass, ceramic, metal, or enamel."

ā€œSome plastic mugs are safe (on the warmer) too, but I'd probably avoid pairing a warmer with plastic the same way I'd avoid microwaving most plastic,ā€ she says. Laskowski recommends ceramic mugs because they retain heat better than other materials.

Power Source

In terms of power, many mug warmers use a battery and USB cable that you can connect to your laptop or wall plug. If you prefer a corded coffee mug warmer, opt for an electric model that connects directly to your power supply.Ā

ā€œMug warmers come in a range of sizesā€”with some bases able to accommodate mugs up to 6 inches in diameter,ā€ says Uriostegui. ā€œThereā€™s a mug warmer for every sized mug, even those that may be oversized.ā€

When it comes to mug capacity, some are as small as 6 ounces to as much as 16 ounces or more.

Special Features

Practically every warmer will keep your drink hot and steamy. But depending on your budget, you can get a mug warmer with handy bonus features. For instance, many mug warmers have an auto shut-off function for safety. You can also find warmers with temperature control functions, which allow you to tailor your drink's warmth. The typical temperature range is usually between 90 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit.Ā

ā€œThe two things I would look for are temperature control and an automatic shut-off,ā€ says Laskowski. ā€œDifferent drinks or preferences might require different temperatures, and temperature control has become a popular feature across a lot of mug warmers. Automatic shut-off, I think, is extremely important as it reduces any potential safety risks associated with warmers.ā€

In addition to these features, you can control some mug warmers with your phone via an app. Some warmers also have charging pads that use electromagnetic energy to charge without a wire.

Questions You Might Ask

Are coffee mug warmers worth it.

A mug warmer can retain your drinkā€™s unique flavor and aroma by keeping it at an optimal drinking temperature, between 130-150 degrees Fahrenheit. It can help a good cup stay fresher, retain its aromatics, and be enjoyed longer. For people who truly enjoy their daily cup of coffee and take their time to savor it, a mug warmer is a must-have desktop or countertop appliance.Ā

How much should you expect to pay for a coffee mug warmer?

ā€œHigh-end coffee mug warmers featuring internal heating sources, temperature-control settings, and auto-off functionality can run upwards of $130,ā€ says Uriostegui. ā€œAt the other end of the spectrum, consumers can pick up a perfectly serviceable pad-based warmer for as little as $10.ā€Ā

Are coffee mug warmers safe?

Coffee mug warmers are perfectly safe if used properly. An auto shut-off timer is especially helpful to ensure your appliance turns off when not in use. ā€œTo be extra safe, I'd recommend using your warmer at the lower end of the temperature range and only leaving it on when you're nearby (like at your desk)," says Laskowski. ā€œIf you're walking away for a bit, itā€™s probably better you finish off your cup and shut it off.ā€Ā

17 Best Travel Coffee Mugs for Hot and Cold Drinks

Commute with your coffee under control.

best travel mugs

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

For many of us, coffee is a constant companion ā€” and that means you'll want a trusty travel mug as you head out the door. Whether you prefer a piping hot cup from your drip coffee maker or single-serve coffeemaker , a refill at Starbucks or a dose of joe from your cold brew coffee maker , your travel coffee mug should handle it all without leaking. Fortunately, there's tons of options out there, including stainless steel coffee thermoses to keep your beverages cool and ones with straws for easy sipping.

Over the years, the pros in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab have tested 45 different travel mugs for hot and cold temperature retention, durability, resistance to leakage, ease of use and more. In our most recent tests, we called in samples of the latest travel mugs and used them both in the office and on our commutes to see how well they held up. We noted how they felt, how they traveled and, unavoidably, how they held up when dropped. Ahead, we rounded up the best travel coffee mugs based on picks that performed well during testing or come from brands that we trust.

Zojirushi's travel mug with a locking lid opens with the push of a button but won't leak or spill (even in a backpack). It will keep hot coffee hot ā€” in fact, the brand is so confident that it offers a five-year warranty on heat retention. Iced coffee fans will appreciate that the mouth is large enough to handle big ice cubes for that extra chill.

Our tester noted that the vacuum-sealed lid keeps water cold all day: "I always grab it from my backpack and think, 'There's no way this could still possibly be cool anymore,' and I'm always pleasantly surprised." We also like the slim design, which is easy to grip and fits nicely into backpacks or totes. It comes in several colors and a 12-ounce version.

This stainless steel mug is a great affordable option, especially considering its large 20-ounce size. What's more, it claims to retain the temperature of your coffee for up to six hours. Online reviewers like that it fits easily into car holders and won't sweat when filled with ice. The tumbler includes two lids: The featured slider lid as well as a flip-style lid , so you can choose which you prefer for the beverage you're drinking. It also comes with a reusable straw and a straw cleaner, though we found the straw was short and inconvenient to use.

Stanley has been in the thermal carafe game since 1913. This travel coffee mug delivers the company's insulated design and also includes a push-button "trigger action" lid that keeps the mug sealed unless pushed. We liked that it means the spout stays closed when you're not hands-on . Our pros did note that it requires some level of strength and dexterity to hold the button while sipping. This mug is available in several colors (even camo!) and in a 20-ounce size.

This 10-ounce travel mug from Avana is perfectly sized for espresso-based drinks, but it's also available in 20-ounce and 30-ounce versions. Kitchen Appliances & Innovation Lab Director Nicole Papantoniou likes that the simple two-piece design is easy to clean because the lid is just one solid piece, unlike many other lids. This is particularly helpful if you like coffee drinks with foam, like latte beverages , that can gunk up lids over time. The contoured mouthpiece makes sipping easy, but it doesn't seal closed, so watch out for leaks. The double-walled insulated construction keeps drinks hot or cold and helps prevent condensation from collecting on the outside.

We love when kitchen gear comes apart for a thorough cleaning, but would rather skip the guesswork that can follow when it's time to reassemble. The OXO travel coffee mug with SimplyClean lid solves this pain point: The four-piece lid is color-coded, numbered and etched with assembly instructions . It's easy to take apart and clean by hand (or in the dishwasher), and simple to put back together for your next cup. Never mind, it's also comfortable to hold. The mug comes in four other colors as well as a 20-ounce size.

Hydro Flask has a huge following when it comes to water bottles ā€” in fact, we named the brand our best stainless steel water bottle ā€” and we're fans of its coffee mugs (called coffee flasks), too . GH Lab tests found that its stainless steel, vacuum-insulated body kept drinks hot and cold for hours, and it was quite leakproof. Hydro Flask also offers a separate wide-mouth lid , which can be handy for cold beverages. (The included lid twists to open and close.) But, be careful drinking hot beverages with a wide mouth as it can spill easily. It's available in a range of colors as well as 16- and 20-ounce sizes , and the little handle helps make it easier to transport.

This SmrtMugg travel mug ā€” rated our best self-heating travel mug ā€” has built-in heat technology to keep coffee hot. Its large battery on the bottom ā€” the manufacturer claims a 10-hour battery life ā€” kept coffee hot (above the target temp of 135ĖšF) for the full four hours of our Lab tests . Once you get the hang of the controls at the bottom of the mug, the clear digital readout is helpful in setting the temperature and turning off the mug. This travel mug also aced our leak tests. Our tester noted that while the push-button lid is easy to use, the edge of the button can bump your lip while drinking.

This sleek 16-ounce bottle has been redesigned to fit more comfortably in your hand. Though we have not tested this model in the Lab, our pros appreciate that i ts large size and wide mouth can easily fit ice cubes , which makes it a great choice for frequent iced coffee drinkers. We have also found other S'well products to be good at maintaining temperatures. It seals shut and is leakproof; plus, it will keep your drinks cold (or hot!) all day. The S'well comes in a ton of color options as well as 12-ounce and 20-ounce sizes.

This coffee mug from Contigo is super comfortable in your hands, and it has a unique locking feature that makes it leak- and spill-proof. When you want to sip (or chug) your coffee, just press the button to release the seal. During your commute, you can lock the button so you don't accidentally press it while on the go . It's also completely dishwasher-safe, even the lid. One tester did note that with hot beverages, the lid can feel too hot to handle.

This popular Yeti mug looks just like a traditional coffee mug, but it's designed to keep your drinks hot or cold and comes with a lid to prevent unnecessary spills. The sturdy and comfortable handle is large enough for even wide hands. It's available in a dozen different colors as well as sizes from 10- to 30 ounces. Another bonus is that when you buy from the Yeti site, you can customize your product with a short text, a monogram or a logo. Our tester found that the lid slides open easily but noted that it's not leakproof. The brand has also introduced the Rambler Stronghold lid , which screws on (rather than presses in), which we're actively testing in the Lab.

Fellow Carter Everywhere Travel Mug

Carter Everywhere Travel Mug

This little cylinder makes a statement, with testers loving how compact it was. The sleek stainless steel shell contains a ceramic liner intended to keep your coffee free of metallic flavors. The screw top reveals a wide mouth that you can sip from any angle and is large enough for adding ice . It comes in seven additional colors as well as a smaller, 12-ounce size.

W&P Porter Ceramic Mug with Protective Silicone Sleeve

Ceramic Mug with Protective Silicone Sleeve

Papantoniou likes that the inside of this travel mug is easy-to-clean porcelain, which generally helps to prevent buildup over time that can negatively impart flavors . She also noted that it keeps coffee "nice and hot right off the bat." It includes a simple shape and a silicone sleeve for a comfortable non-slip grip. It comes in several colors and a couple of terrazzo prints . It's also available in a 16-ounce size.

Starbucks Classic Green & White Traveler Tumbler Coffee Mug

Classic Green & White Traveler Tumbler Coffee Mug

Starbucks fans will appreciate that they can purchase this mug online rather than solely in the stores. The ceramic mug is easy to use ā€” the lid just pops into place and is surrounded by a rubber seal to help keep it (and the coffee) in place ā€” and easy to clean . "It keeps coffee warm like a standard ceramic mug would, and the lid helps to keep things a little warmer for longer," our tester says. "I like that it's not scalding hot like in a metal mug, so I can enjoy my coffee without burning my mouth." The 12-oz size is perfect for refills of Starbucks tall drinks.

STOJO Collapsible Travel Cup with Straw

Collapsible Travel Cup with Straw

Stojo's collapsible coffee cup makes it possible to travel light while avoiding single-use plastics. The brand impressed our pros with its other collapsible offerings ā€” the Collapsible Bowl won a 2021 Kitchen Gear Award . Similarly, this travel cup is well designed: The cup includes a heat sleeve that provides a structured grip for the squishy silicone cup, and the 16-ounce size includes a straw (which is great for iced coffee or if you prefer to bring your own cup to fountain machines). The collapsed cup is just two inches in size. It's both microwave and dishwasher safe, with 8-ounce , 12-ounce and 24-ounce sizes.

MiiR Flip Traveler

Flip Traveler

With a 4.8-rating on Amazon, this stainless steel thermos comes in a slim design and an easy-to-open lid. Though we have not tested this pick in the Lab, we like its focus on giving back: T he bottom of each travel mug is printed with a "Give Code" that you can enter at Mirr's website for details on the brand's corporate giving , which is funded through every purchase. The Flip Traveler is available in several colors and 12-ounce and 16-ounce sizes .

JOCO Glass Reusable Coffee Cup

Glass Reusable Coffee Cup

This glass bodied Joco mug has a colorful silicone lid and a matching thermal sleeve. It's microwave (and dishwasher!) safe, which makes it a great option if you like to reheat your coffee throughout the day. Since the glass is clear, it's easy to see how much coffee you have left ā€” and hit your preferred shade when you add your creamer. Take note that the lid does not seal shut, so while it might be handy for car commuting, this isn't one that's great for tossing in your bag.

Zoku Instant Iced Coffee Maker

Instant Iced Coffee Maker

For iced coffee fiends, this mug is for you. Get your cuppa in flash: Simply store the inner core of the mug in the freezer, then slip the frozen cup into the protective plastic sleeve and pour in hot coffee. Our tester found that the travel mug will chill your coffee rapidly without watering it down with ice cubes. (The brand actually uses the same concept for its ice cream maker .) Slide in the lid with the provided straw, and you're ready for undiluted iced coffee ā€” though you can add ice if you prefer. One caveat is that the freezable core holds only 11 ounces, which some might find too small.

How we test travel coffee mugs

dog

When the experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab test travel coffee mugs, they use thermocouples to track the temperature of the liquid inside the mug over time. Many of the mugs on this list were tested at home over months (even over commutes) to assess their durability, ease of use and temperature retention.

Our pros also evaluate the mugs for stability, cleanability and comfort of both holding and drinking. They test whether the mug is easy to open and close, and they drop each mug to assess its durability. To test for leaking, our pros roll the mug around on its side as well as turn it upside down and shake it vigorously.

How to find the best travel coffee mug for you

linebreak

āœ”ļø Material : Many travel coffee mugs are stainless steel, though our list also includes porcelain, glass and silicone options. Double-walled construction is common with stainless steel mugs, and that can help keep your beverage hot or cold longer. Other materials may not be insulated. If you opt for a glass mug, consider borosilicate glass, which is tempered to prevent shattering with hot liquids and can be more durable if dropped. Porcelain mugs are generally easy to clean, and because the material is nonporous, the mug is unlikely to develop odd flavors. Silicone is a great lightweight option, but it can get warm if it does not have a heat sleeve.

āœ”ļø Lid : Some lids are more spill-proof than others. Our Lab experts particularly love the locking feature on the Contigo Luxe Autoseal Vacuum-Insulated Travel Coffee Mug , which adds a level of safety if you plan to toss your mug in your bag. Lids that screw on are also often leak-resistant. Those who prefer a more traditional-style mug with a handle may find that slider lids are common; evaluate those for leaking, as some are prone to dribbles (or worse). Note that spill-proof lids often require more care to clean.

āœ”ļø Washability : Check to see if the mug is dishwasher-safe. If it needs to be washed by hand, make sure you can thoroughly clean it with a sponge or bottle brush .

The 7 Best Coffee Mug Warmers, Tested & Reviewed

Keep your java just how you like it with one of these precision-heating machines

heated electric travel mug

The Spruce Eats / Irene Huhulea

If you often find yourself heading to the microwave to reheat your morning java, there could be a better solution. While a quick nuke certainly does the trick, it can take away coffeeā€™s original flavor, leaving you with a less-than-desirable cup. Another option is a mug warmer. These convenient heated coasters can keep liquids warm for several hours, allowing you to enjoy your cup of joe throughout the day without interruption. We tested 17 popular models to find the best ones.

How We Tested

Others we tested.

  • What to Look for

Why Trust The Spruce Eats?

Best overall, nextmug self-heating coffee mug.

  • Design 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 5 /5

Precise and consistent temperature

Wireless self-heating mug

Includes travel lid

Short battery charge

Handle won't fit in a cup holder

If you're a daily coffee drinker with a standard ceramic mug, you're probably used to your drink being lukewarm by the time it's half-full and full-on cold for the last few sips. What impressed us most about the Nextmug is just how precise and consistent its temperature controls are. From the full mug to the very last drops, our coffee stayed equally hot.

We also like the ease of using this warmer, which has its controls and heater self-contained within the mug. You turn it on and select a temperature using a single button on the front, and the onboard battery regulates the temperature without any coasters or plugs required. The available settings of warm, hot, and piping equate to 130, 140, and 150 degrees; we found the lowest setting perfect and the highest too hot to drink, but this range covers most people's preferences without being hot enough to cause burns.

No matter the temperature setting, the Nextmug's battery lasted only about an hour in testing; we wish it had lasted longer. But the mug will continue to heat while it recharges on its compact plug-in coaster base. It includes a spill-resistant lid that makes it more portable, though you can't really bring it in the car as its handle won't fit in a round cup holder. The precision and accuracy make this the best-performing warmer in our tests, and the price tag reflects thatā€”however, the Nextmug is often on sale for a nice discount.

The Spruce Eats / Katie Bowler

Best Budget

Kin element mug warmer and lid set.

  • Design 4.8 /5
  • Performance 4.5 /5
  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5

Inexpensive

Adjustable temperature

Includes heat-trapping lid

Inconsistent heating

No rim on coaster

May not be safe for glass

This inexpensive model is essentially a tiny, low-powered portable electric burner incorporated into a coaster. You place a mug onto the glass base, and it heats up to one of three set temperatures. Don't worry, there are safety features incorporated: The warmer won't turn on unless it senses the weight of a mug, and there's an automatic shut-off feature in case you forget about your coffee. It also doesn't get anywhere near as hot as a stove.

The Kin Element works by heating your mug (and its contents) only from beneath, which makes the temperature less even than mugs that heat from the bottom and sides at the same time. We did find this to be a problem in testingā€”a full mug might start to get cool on top and hot on the bottom, while a nearly empty cup heats its contents to a noticeably higher temperature than a full one. However, it comes with a solution to this problem, in the form of a dishwasher-safe silicone lid that sits on top of your mug to trap heat. We didn't expect the lid to do much, but it really did regulate the temperature quite a bit better than with an uncovered mug.

The three temperature settings for the Kin Element are a bit lower than the Nextmug, ranging from 110 to 140 degrees, but we think that's plenty hot for most beverages. The base is 4.5 inches wide, enough for all but the largest novelty mugs, and it has a perfectly flat surface to accommodate even larger vessels. However, that means there's no lip to hold your mug in place and it can be easy to knock over.

A somewhat serious issue we encountered with this model came when we used it with glass: A candle cracked sitting on the base. Kin says you can use the Element as a candle warmer, and the product listing also shows it used with glass mugs, but we'd stick to ceramic to be safe. (We had no problems in testing with any ceramic mugs.)

The Spruce Eats / Araziel Jackson

Ember Mug 2

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Ease of Use 4.8 /5

Pinpoint control via app

Modern minimalist design

No manual controls

Small capacity

Ember calls itself the "world's first temperature control mug," and its Mug 2 is the latest in self-warming drink-holding technology. The wireless device's battery lasts up to 90 minutes per charge, and its slim charging base is barely wider than the mug itself.

Where it really stands out is its futuristic smart functions. This mug is controlled by an app that lets you set its temperature right down to the individual degree, anywhere from 120 to 145. The app has a steeping timer with recommended temperatures for different types of tea, specialized presets for different types of beverages, and the ability to program your own beverage routine exactly how you like it. It can even connect to your phone's health app to track how much caffeine you're consuming. And we found the Ember app blissfully intuitive to connect and use, with none of the bugs and glitches we often run into with "smart" kitchen appliances. The temperature control was precise, keeping coffee at the same temperature whether the mug was full or next to empty.

On the other hand, you can't really use the Mug 2 without the app. You can turn the device on manually and it will heat to the last temperature it was set to, but you don't have any control over it otherwise. We also found it undersized, with a mere 10-ounce capacity for the standard model. (There's a 14-ounce version available that's significantly more expensive.) We love the matte finish on the Mug 2 as well as the fact that it comes in black, white, or red, but it is rather delicate. You have to wash the mug by hand and can't use metal implementsā€”we managed to scratch a test model pretty badly with just one metal spoon stirring session.

Ohom ui self-heating mug set.

  • Performance 4.8 /5

Efficient induction heating

Dishwasher- and microwave-safe

Charger works with any wireless charging device

Underpowered

This mug looks...like a normal coffee mug, and that's a big part of why we like it. The OHOM Ui mug has a ceramic exterior, with a thin layer of metallic material in the bottom that heats up via induction when you place it on its base. The mug comes in lots of colors (check different retailers for different options), and it's even safe to put in both the dishwasher and the microwave, something few other warming mugs can claim. On top of that, the charging pad uses the Qi wireless standard and can charge many cell phones, tablets, earbuds, and other small electronics when you're not using it to heat your coffee.

In testing, we found the Ui a bit underpowered. It kept our coffee just warm when covered with the included heat-retention lid and barely lukewarm without it. There are no temperature controls or settings with this mug; it turns on when you place it on the base and turns off after an hour or when you take it off the base. The brand says its maximum temperature is just 130 degreesā€”not all that hotā€”so this is probably a mug for coffee drinkers who don't like their java scalding. The 12-ounce mug is also on the smaller side, and the unit is fairly expensive for a mug without self-contained heating capabilities.

Best for the Office

Cosori original coffee warmer & mug.

Wide temperature range

Includes stainless steel mug and lid

Steel mug gets very hot

Mug is not very portable

Most mug warmers aren't equipped to deal with a very large mug, which is a problem if you like to chug hot coffee all morning long. Cosori's set includes the biggest mug on this list, a 17-ouncer that even the most serious caffeine addicts won't have to refill quite as often. It's made of stainless steel, which conducts heat well and comes to temperature quickly, but it also has a heatproof handle and rubber sleeve around the middle that protects your fingers and serves as insulation. (That said, the bare metal parts of the mug get hot enough to singe, so be careful.)

The Cosori warmer plate has the widest temperature range and highest power of all the models we tested, with single-degree precision anywhere between 77 and 230 degrees. The brand says not to set beverages above 158, but the warmer can double as a hot plateā€”it's not hot enough for much real cooking, but you could use it to reheat lunch at your desk or boil water for tea. We didn't measure its abilities as a hot plate in this set of testing, but as a warmer it was able to maintain a full mug of coffee at 140 degrees for four hours with no trouble.

Because it doesn't have a self-heating mug, this model is quite a bit cheaper than others that do. The downside is that the mug has to stay on the base at all times. It also heats only from the bottom, which can lead to uneven temperatures, so we recommend keeping the included heat-retaining lid on top of the mug. (Unfortunately, the lid just sits on top and doesn't seal, so it doesn't make anything very portable.) You can, in theory, use the Cosori base with any heat-safe mug, but the instructions say it won't heat as effectively with a ceramic or thicker metal mug.

If you drink a lot of coffee at work, this device is ideal to plug in right at your desk. It's unobtrusive but stable, works simply and easily, and is cheap enough that it won't be the end of the world if a thieving co-worker makes off with yours.

Best for Travel

Ember travel mug 2.

  • Performance 4 /5

Long battery life

Very expensive

Ember put all the functions of its popular Smart Mug 2 into a more travel-friendly configuration with this warmer that's ideal for anybody with a long morning commute. The tall, round tumbler has a spill-proof lid and can stash in a cupholder, backpack, or purse while you can use the Ember app or the onboard controls to set any temperature from 120 to 145 degrees. In testing, the Travel Mug 2 was just as accurate in heating as the Smart Mug 2, and its three-hour battery life is quite a bit longer.

But this model also adds a bunch of other useful features. It incorporates Apple's FindMy technology, which means you can use your iPhone to track a lost mug down. It will automatically turn off after two hours or when it senses it's empty, but then it turns back on when it feels movement or liquid. You can even set the LED temperature and control display to scroll a name or other message, which is helpful if there are several Travel Mug 2s in the office or familyā€”and it's just fun.

The big downside here, of course, is cost. The Travel Mug 2 is the most expensive model we tested; you pay for all those features and functions. It's also quite small for its sizeā€”it's as tall as a 16-ounce container but can only hold 12 ounces since its electronics and heating element take up a lot of room. One other minor quibble we found is that the push-to-open lid makes such a good seal that it can build up pressure while it heats up and spatter when you open it. If you're heating coffee from cold in this mug, open the lid briefly every few minutes to relieve the pressure and avoid any mess.

Best Crocheted

Nandy's nook hand crocheted mug wrap.

Handmade and adorable

Easy-to-fasten button

Multiple colors

Won't fit all coffee mugs

Not as effective as electric warmers

This handmade wrap from Nandy's Nook is technically a mug insulator and can't actually increase the temperature of anything, but it's a sweater for your coffee, and it's really cute. The cozy knitted contraption wraps around any round, handled mug and connects in the front with a wooden button. Besides keeping the contents hotter longer, it also protects the user's knuckles from being burned on a too-hot mug exterior.

We didn't include this mug wrap in our official testing, but reviewers love it because it's well-made and makes for a great gift. It also comes in five different colors to suit the recipient's taste. In terms of cleaning, the maker recommends washing by hand and laying flat to dry, though it can be machine-washed and -dried.

Dimensions: 3.8 x 10 inches | Materials: 100 percent acrylic yarn, wood button

With its even, consistent heating from full cup to the last drops, the Nextmug earned our top recommendation. For a more affordable but still dependable way to keep your coffee hot, you can't go wrong with the Kin Element Mug Warmer .

Based on the results of previous rounds of testing, along with hours researching top products and key features, we chose 17 different mug warmer models to purchase and test. We incorporated the warmers into our daily hot-beverage routines over the course of about a month.

We Observed

  • Heating consistency: As we used the warmers on a day-to-day basis, we measured the temperature of the liquid in the mug to see if it matched the set temperature, using mugs of different types and at different levels of fullness. At least once during the testing period, we left a mug of coffee on each warmer for a full hour to see if it would stay at the same temperature the whole time. (We also tasted the coffee before and after to see if it lost any flavor or acquired a burnt taste.)
  • Design: We looked at a lot of different aspects of design, including the size and shape of the warmer and what types of mugs it can accommodate; the power cord and whether its length and orientation interfered with use; and safety features like automatic shutoff, a lip to keep the mug in place, or a weight sensor.
  • Battery life: For wireless mug warmers, we measured how long each model could keep coffee hot before it needed to recharge. We also took note of any features that made the charging plate more or less convenient to use.
  • Ease of use: Besides how simple each warmer was to actually plug in and turn on, we also considered factors like whether it could accommodate mugs of different sizes and materials, and whether the base had stability on a table or desk even with a heavy mug on top.
  • Settings and accessories: Most mug warmers we tested offer more than one temperature option, and some can even be set down to an individual degree. We measured the temperature at a variety of settings to check accuracy and noted if we had any trouble figuring out how to choose a temperature. Many self-contained and wireless mug warmers include a mug; we evaluated these on capacity, heating ability, and looks. For models with other settings and accessories, we tested these out to determine whether they work as promised, and if they're useful.
  • Value: After completing all our other tests and evaluations, we revealed the retail prices for each mug warmer to consider their relative value. We compared each model's cost to the overall average while keeping in mind that wireless warmers tend to cost quite a bit more than corded ones.
  • Ember Smart Cup : We love Ember. We tested three models for this story, and both of the other two made our list of favorites. The Smart Cup has the same easy-to-use app and excellent performance as the other Ember models, but it's just really small. The capacity is only 6 ounces and for only a little more money you can get a much bigger vessel.
  • VOBAGA Coffee Mug Warmer : This hot plateā€“style warmer did a pretty good job of keeping a full mug hot for four hours, as long as we kept it on the highest temperature setting. It's not a bad machine albeit on the more expensive side for one that's tethered to the wall with a plugā€”and this plug and heating plate are laid out in an awkward way that takes up a lot of space and is a hassle to move around.
  • GARMEE Electric Coffee Warmer : Another model with a warming plate that can work with any kind of mug, the GARMEE did fine in tests and is priced moderately for what it does. It didn't stand out in any way, except that the plate got hot enough that we'd worry about burning fingers.
  • Vsitoo S3pro Temperature Control Smart Mug 2 : This warmer has very similar functionality and price to the Ember Smart Mug 2. Its app is simple, it heats quickly, and it has solid battery life. We just like the Ember better, and it's only slightly more.

What to Look for in a Coffee Mug Warmer

Heating method.

There are essentially two ways a mug warmer can be set up: as a miniature "hot plate" that heats up to warm the mug indirectly or as a self-contained system with a heating element within the mug itself.

Hot plateā€“style warmers tend to cost less, but they don't warm as evenly or hold temperatures as accurately because they only heat the mug from one side. Many of these models include a heat-retaining lid you place atop your mug while it heats, which seems like such a minor thing but made a big difference in our tests. One other advantage of these is that many models will work with any mug rather than just the one that's included.

Self-contained mug warmers are higher-priced but heat more evenly and precisely because the entire inner surface of the mug warms up the liquid inside. These mugs might have an internal battery that can work on its own for a few hours between charges, while others will only heat up when attached to the base. Self-contained mugs generally require careful hand-washing, as submerging in water or the high temperatures of the dishwasher can damage their electronics.

Besides just warming the contents of a mug, many models extend their functionality with multiple temperature settings that can be as precise as down to the individual degree. Most warmers also have safety features that shut off the heat after a set amount of time, when there's nothing on the heating plate, or when the mug is empty. Smart mug warmers that use a phone app might have customizable programs, set temperatures for different beverages, and recipe suggestions in addition to basic controls, too. Some of the hot plateā€“style warmers can also heat up to much higher temperatures than mug-only machines, with the ability to boil water or even reheat food.

A "cup of coffee" can mean a lot of different amounts of liquid, and that's true whether you're looking at espresso cups, travel mugs, or mug warmers. The models we tested vary from less than 10 ounces to more than 16, and there's nothing close to a "standard" size. What you need really depends on how much coffee you drink. If one little mug normally lasts for hours, a smaller warmer is fine, but if you're a bigger coffee drinker, a larger machine will keep you from having to refill your mug over and over. Keep in mind that self-contained warming mugs hold less liquid than similar-sized mugs that don't have built-in electronics. For a quick ballpark on what capacity you might need, fill your current coffee mug with water and then dump it into a measuring cup.

Are coffee mug warmers worth it?

If you are serious about coffee, yes, especially if you tend to forget about your half-drank mug over the course of a few hours. You could microwave coffee to reheat it, but this heats the liquid up to or near boiling temperature, which damages the flavor and means you have to wait until your microwaved coffee cools back down to drinkable temperature. A mug warmer keeps your coffee hot, but also keeps it tasting fresh by making sure the temperature stays steady. This is not the kind of appliance that absolutely every kitchen needs, but a coffee warmer makes a great gift for a coffee aficionado and is available at many different price points.

Are mug warmers a fire hazard?

The idea of keeping an electrically heated appliance on your desk or kitchen table might make you a little nervous, but most mug warmers include a timed automatic shut-off and other safety features that kick in if there's a power surge or the temperature gets too high. On top of that, mug warmers don't involve open flame and can't reach temperatures anywhere near those of a stove.

Of course, you still need to exercise common sense. Keep the warming plate or mug away from paper, plastic, or other loose materials, and don't leave it on and unattended for long periods of time. When you're not using the warmer, unplug it from the wall or shut it off.

What's the best temperature for coffee?

Coffee comes out best when brewed between 195 and 205 degrees, says Peter Giuliano , Chief Research Officer at the Specialty Coffee Association and Executive Director of the Coffee Science Foundation. But that's much hotter than you want to drink your coffee. Anything over about 160 degrees can cause burns, and few warmers even let you set the temperature that high. There's actually been some research into this topic, and a 2008 study set the average preferred serving temperature at 140. The most important thing is your personal preference, and most warmers offer at least some temperature customization. Test out a range of temperatures and see what you like.

Will a mug warmer work with any mug?

Some will and some won't. If the warmer's included mug houses the heating element, you'll have to use that mug. The base doesn't heat up; it only charges the battery. With a hot plateā€“style warmerā€”even one that includes its own mugā€”you can mostly use any vessel that will fit on the plate. However, check the manual to see if any materials are incompatible. Glass especially might not work with all warmers and can crack or shatter when heated. Also, a warmer might not be able to heat dense ceramic as quickly as an included mug made of a different material.

Are Coffee Mug Warmers Worth It?

You can be serious about your coffee if it is a priority to you. The warmer will be the best choice for you if your habits include drinking coffee in large quantities, getting distracted, microwaving to heat it, or consuming it over a long time. In addition to making coffee taste fresh, they also maintain a consistent temperature. There are many price options available, making it easy to find one that fits your budget. The perfect gift for serious coffee lovers is the coffee mug warming.

Are Mug Warmers A Fire Hazard?

Some warmers can be set to automatically shut off and/or at a particular temperature. Use common sense. Don't leave your item unattended for prolonged periods. Also, ensure you don't plug the warmer in when you leave the home. You can buy an item that shuts off automatically if there is a risk of a fire.

Are Coffee Mug Warmers Safe?

Although some models have greater safety features, others are less secure. An automatic thermostat with shut-off is a smart idea for those who are easily forgetful.

How Long Does A Mug Warmer Last?

The frequency and type of use will affect the longevity of your mug warming device. Plastic mug warmers heat up fast, making them less durable. Other mug warmers are made out of metal and last for longer. A mug warmer that is regularly used will normally last around a year. The mug warmer may be able to last three years if turned on just once or twice weekly.

When Should I Charge My Battery?

Your mug warmer that is wireless or equipped with a rechargeable battery does not require regular charging. If it is, you can simply leave it on and let the charger charge whenever required. For wired models, however, it is recommended that you charge the battery at least once a month so that there are no unexpected power outages.

Do Mug Warmers Work With Any Mug?

Most mugs will be compatible with metal, ceramic or glass mugs. However, some brands that we have reviewed here offer their own mugs.

What to Consider

There are basically two types of mug warmers ā€” standalone heated surfaces that look like small hot plates, like our pick for best overall , or sets with a self-heating mug included, like the Ember . The hot plate-style mug warmers are usually the simpler and cheaper option. You may not get many bells and whistles with them, but youā€™ll be able to use the ceramic mugs that you already own and love without an additional costly purchase.

This is an image

Mug warmer sets are a bit fancier. They comprise a heating pad and an insulated mug that coordinates and fits perfectly with it. These sets generally look a lot nicer than the standalone mug warmers ā€” however, they will be more expensive, and the mug that comes in these sets may not be dishwasher-safe.

Automatic shut-off, temperature control, app connectivity, oh my! Mug warmer sets and standalone warmers can offer a variety of features that go beyond just keeping your drink at the right temperature. If youā€™re looking for something tech-savvy, opt for a set that doubles as a wireless charger or has a touch-control interface. If youā€™d rather have a more straightforward design, a simple hot plate with an indicator light and an on/off switch will be a quick and easy start to your morning.

Heating Duration

Slow coffee drinkers could benefit from a mug warmer that has an extended heating duration. Many warming plate mug warmers will stay on as long as theyā€™re plugged in (or reach their automatic shut-off time), while self-heating mugs may need to be recharged after a couple of hours. Weā€™ve selected mug warmer models that range in heating duration, with some staying powered up for up to 8 hours. Consider your average drinking habits and whether or not your cup of joe needs a quick boost or all-day warmth for lasting flavor.

How We Selected

We stand by from our hours of editor testing for these best mug warmers, sharing our opinions and familiarity with each to help you pick the top one for your needs.

We also talked with Ty Neil, founder of Unknown Entity Coffee . His deep knowledge and enthusiasm for roasting helped put in perspective why hot coffee and mug warmers are so beneficial ā€” and beloved.

ā€œWe are influenced by an environment of people who take their coffee hot, like in media and culturally. How many TV shows or movies have you seen where New Yorkers request their coffee black and hot?ā€ Neill quips but raises a good point, traditionally Americas do prefer a piping hot cup of joe. Itā€™s ingrained in us, and we have to agree. Having a mug warmer like any on this list can assist in making that bean dream come true.

Neil expressed that, when coffee is hot, our experience drinking it is all the better. ā€œThe dissolution of solids is what provides body and flavor to our coffee and this process is amplified when steeped in hot water," he explained. In other words, "you can really experience these aromas best when everything is nice and hot.ā€ Having coffee at the right temperature can make all the difference in taste and connection.

We here at Best Products want to make sure each sip is an exceptional caffeinated adventure. To that end, we spent hours with our coffee and our warmers, evaluating for heat production, ease of use, convenience, and any potential flavor issues that may arise from using these warmers. These are our favorites.

VOBAGA Coffee Mug Warmer

Coffee Mug Warmer

Investing in a mug warmer doesnā€™t mean committing to a device thatā€™s an eyesore at your desk, and this affordable and simple Vobaga unit is proof of that. Donā€™t let the simplicity scare you, by no means does that mean low quality. This is one of Amazonā€™s best sellers, and after testing it out, we can see why.

This design comes in a few different colors, but weā€™re partial to the dreamy blue hue. The hot plate operates with just one button, allowing you to toggle among three different heat settings, from 105 to 149 degrees Fahrenheit. It's simple to use and gets the job done every time.

After 4 hours of continued use, the auto-shut-off feature gets to work and the power button will flash red until the warmer cools down to 97 degrees Fahrenheit. Though a mug doesnā€™t come included, we like the freedom of using whatever mug we have clean at the moment. We did notice, however, that the warmer works best with thin-walled, flat, or concave-bottom cups.

If you want to pick the best mug possible, Neil pointed out that you'll best experience all the aromas a batch of coffee has to offer "in larger open mugs, as the aromas interact with your nose.ā€

Selecting this best overall made something Neil said stand out, ā€œThere is something about the first cup of coffee in the morning. The first sip and a few seconds of peace and quiet. These are moments I wake up and actually look forward to.ā€ Coffee can be so personal, and we believe Vobagaā€™s mug warmer will become a favorite for you, too.

Ember Tumbler Mug Warmer

Tumbler Mug Warmer

The Ember Tumbler sets itself apart from similar products in that itā€™s a mug with a built-in warmer that can be used independently from its included coaster, which makes it perfect for travel. We are big fans of Ember and know they make quality items.

Though the internal battery makes the mug a bit clunky, it can last for about three hours without needing a boost. The coaster functions as the charger and doubles as a warmer, which helped keep my bev warm for much longer.

After a weekend of testing, writer Sheilah Villari says "I found tea, coffee, and hot chocolate stayed not just warm but very hot all day. And I do mean from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m." She adds that "running errands in chilly winds and driving rain made this the perfect comforting companion."

There are two lids included with the tumbler, one with a mouthpiece and one with a handle. The lid with the handle option makes the mug easy to transport without spillage.

"Being able to unscrew the lid (which was very secure), and still have toasty chai tea warmed me right up," says Villari. "This is probably one of the better portable mug warmers on the market, given its longevity for heat."

The Ember is also a smart device, so you can program it to the exact temperature you want via the Ember app. You can do this for multiple types of beverages, and even find recipes for new drinks to try. The luxury price tag might be something to balk at, but the tumbler is a worthwhile investment if youā€™re a religious coffee or tea drinker.

ā€œI like to let the first cup of the day transport me to times I have experienced peace and clarity,ā€ Neil gushed. ā€œBack to enjoying a fresh cup of coffee on the Ybor strip.ā€ That is a sentiment we can vibe with and very much what each sip with the Ember felt like to me.

OHOM Ui Artist Collection Mug Warmer

Ui Artist Collection Mug Warmer

Another OHOM selection, this mug warmer from the Artist Collection makes the perfect gift for the coffee drinker in your life. The design is gorgeous and the mug has a larger capacity than the Ui 2, which we found convenient for slower-pace coffee drinkers.

Besides keeping your favorite beverages at your preferred temperature, the warmer can also charge your cell phone and your wireless earbuds. A gift that is multifaceted with multiple ways to use it just adds to its value. Plus, itā€™s just a gorgeous mug warmer, and thereā€™s nothing wrong with being pretty. Given this is also a solid and reliable warmer, thatā€™s just like tasty cream in coffee, perfection.

The hot plate is very sleek and lightweight, and there is an indicator light that turns on and off when there is a cup on the surface. There are no two mugs exactly alike since they are handcrafted, so your giftee will get a cup that is uniquely their own.

OHOM Ui 2 Mug and Warmer Set

Ui 2 Mug and Warmer Set

The Ui mug warmer set from OHOM comes with a sleek aluminum charging plate, which uses magnetic induction energy to heat the metallic layering on the bottom of the ceramic coffee mug to 135 degrees Fahrenheit. Howā€™s that for science?

One of the coolest features is that the hot plate also doubles as a wireless cellphone charger and is super convenient for an office setting. And, no, it won't burn your phone when this setting is used.

It heats up very quickly, and we appreciate that the mug comes with its own lid to lock in the warmth of our favorite drinks. It also helps any paws from dipping into your drink, if you have a few curious furry friends with bad habits in your home. Cat lovers , if you know, you know.

Beyond function, it just looks really cool. This is absolutely a set for someone with style. There are lots of color options to match anyoneā€™s aesthetic.

Disclaimer: The mug is made from ceramic and it gets pretty damn toasty, so itā€™s not the most ideal cup for cozying up with or wrapping both hands around.

Cosori Mug Warmer

Mug Warmer

For a more advanced device, consider this high-tech stainless steel coffee warmer from Cosori. It features touch controls, a vivid and easy-to-read LED display, and a water-resistant warming plate.

If, like us, you need your coffee to be scalding, the heating element of the plate can go up to 230 degrees Fahrenheit. You can customize the temperature of your beverage to anywhere between 77 and 158 degrees Fahrenheit ā€” and you can even adjust it to the exact degree. Beyond the heat that rivals Death Valley, being able to toggle warmth with ease is a perk too. The clear and bright display gets it extra points, to know just how hot that warmer will be definitely.

The warmer will automatically shut off after a long run time of 8 hours. The Corsi has one of the longer heating times on this list, which is a great selling point. There is also a memory function, so itā€™ll remember your preferred temperature before powering down so you donā€™t have to reset the controls with every single use. This is akin to finding the perfect shower temp and praying you get it right every time. Well, with Corsi you actually can get your dream temperature. No guessing game.

Wenvinda Coffee Warmer with Cover

Coffee Warmer with Cover

This affordable mug warmer is incredibly user-friendly with its three temperature settings (131, 158, or 176 degrees Fahrenheit) and numerous auto-off timers that can be programmed between 2 or 12 hours for your all-day sipping enjoyment. While it doesnā€™t glow red while in use, youā€™ll know the heat is on by the illuminated temperature indicator.

The standout feature of this one is its silicone cover that fits right on top of the hot plate while not in use. This can help prevent other people or pets from accidentally getting burned while the mug warmer is cooling down. Plus, it allows you to use the mug warmer as a coaster for iced drinks if you opt to sip a cold brew instead, and it can even be used for wax melts and candles.

Plus, we like that price point if you are a student or gifting to one. Think big picture with this little wonder. It packs a lot of heat for such a small item. Itā€™s dependable and ready to keep all your liquids warm.

Mr. Coffee Mug Warmer

Mug Warmer

Surviving a workday filled with meetings might mean a cup (or three) of caffeine. But youā€™ll never have to worry about drinking room-temperature coffee again with this handy mug warmer. Mr. Coffee has been around since the '70s, and you donā€™t become a recognizable brand with that kind of longevity without creating some iconic products. We definitely think their mug warmer deserves a spot in that legendary lineup.

Itā€™s simple to operate, with an on/off switch and an indicator light when powered. The plate is easy to clean, and the warmer can accommodate mugs in a range of sizes and styles.

Senior editor Summer Cartwright has been using this device from Mr. Coffee for literal years, and it hasnā€™t failed her yet. ā€œIt's a game-changer at work and at home. So much so that I keep one at my desk and within reach in my living room,ā€ she says. ā€œIā€™m a slow coffee drinker and I used to dump out old brew and re-make batches over and over again. Now, I can sip at my leisure knowing my coffee stays warm.ā€
