Review: Herman's Hermits - On Tour (1965)

herman's hermits herman's hermits on tour

Tracks: 1) Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat ; 2) I’m Henry VIII, I Am ; 3) The End Of The World; 4) For Your Love; 5) I Gotta Dream On; 6) Don’t Try To Hurt Me; 7) Silhouettes ; 8) Heartbeat; 9) I’ll Never Dance Again; 10) Tell Me Baby; 11) Traveling Light.

If you see a Sixties’ record by somebody called On Tour , keep in mind that (a) this is a US-only album by a UK artist, (b) this is not a concert album, (c) this is almost certainly a bastard release of odds and ends from the respective artist’s past, present, and even future (in that sometimes it hosts songs that would only later be released on the proper UK album). The Animals On Tour works exactly the same way, and later still, Magic Bus: The Who On Tour would also become one of the weirdest entries in The Who’s discographic history. Nevertheless, some of these LPs did have the advantages of hosting some songs that would only be released in the UK as singles, or not released at all — and they also gave US fans a much earlier opportunity to acquire a long-playing record by their idols than UK fans. Indeed, by the time Herman’s Hermits got their second US album, they were still waiting to get permission for a first one in their own homeland: and the UK edition of Herman’s Hermits , following this summer release in the fall, would essentially be On Tour with three tracks (all the singles!) replaced by three LP-only tracks from the US edition of Herman’s Hermits .

Let’s start off with the singles, because 90% of all our hopes that occasionally Herman’s Hermits might really be " into something good " rest on the singles anyway. ‘Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat’, written by the songwriting team of John Carter and Ken Lewis and put out in January ’65, is a jolly and upbeat pop anthem very much in the early Goffin/King style, the ideal kind of contribution for the level of Herman’s Hermits — and, understandably, one of the weaker cuts when it was borrowed several months later by Marianne Faithfull for her debut album. (Even then, I think that her seductive solo vocal, as compared to the Hermits’ multi-tracked singing, and the baroque harpsichord arrangement as compared to the fairly simplistic electric guitar on the original, at least try to make an improvement — not something that can be often said about the Hermits themselves when they cover other people’s songs). As usual, the only offensive thing about such a song is that it shot to #2 on the US charts... then again, let’s not advance the US charts too much credit.

The next single, ‘Silhouettes’, forces me to make a correction because that, indeed, is a rare case when the Hermits’ attempt at modernizing an oldie works pretty damn well — not that it tells us anything about the specific artistic genius of Herman’s Hermits, because essentially what we have here is a patterned conversion of a stereotypical Fifties’ doo-wop hit into an equally stereotypical mid-Sixties pop-rock song. Our input : a slow, horn-enhanced, catchy-romantic serenade delivered by The Rays in a polite, sentimental Fifties fashion. Our output: a slightly sped up, guitar-enhanced, catchy-romantic serenade delivered by Peter Noone in a joyful, youthful, exuberant Sixties fashion. It does not take much imagination to develop this thread further and realize how the same song would sound in the Seventies (bombastic production), the Eighties (synth-pop), the Nineties (Oasis-style boring crunchy guitars), and the 21st century (umm... Autotune?). But what the heck, at least the melody is memorable.

Skipping then right through ‘Mrs. Brown’ (which was already discussed earlier) and a completely useless version of Sam Cooke’s ‘Wonderful World’ (which somehow failed to make it onto any of the LPs), we now get to the age of big business with the one and only song that Herman’s Hermits are going to be remembered for: ‘I’m Henery The VIII, I Am’ (although on the US album it was boringly spelled ‘Henry’, that extra e is actually totally crucial for the song’s success). The original, hilariously inverting the trope of Henry VIII and his wives by turning it into a story of one widow and her eight husbands all named Henry, was a big vaudeville smash for Harry Champion in the early 1910s — and the «honor» of reviving it for the pop-rock age of the Sixties actually belongs not to Peter Noone, but to the early UK skiffle and rock’n’roll pioneer Joe Brown , who pretty much pre-shaped the song for the Hermits from top to bottom. For Brown, this was sort of a natural thing, though, since he was interested from the start in integrating the American rock’n’roll sound with the UK popular tradition out of pure love for both; Herman’s Hermits had a far more pragmatic role to play — as one of Britain’s most promising exports to the US, they had to consistently deliver that British quirkiness and eccentricity to a hungry US audience, deprived of organic entertainment by their colonial masters for almost 200 years...

...er, uhm, anyway, those rock’n’roll guitar licks you hear played at the beginning of the song, as if it’s gonna be an angry rhythm’n’blues number instead of a vaudeville joke — they’re actually copied from Joe Brown’s version, except they’re thicker and louder, and also there’s a relentlessly plowing bass bottom that almost overpowers the rhythm guitar, and then Peter Noone’s vocal is also louder, more aggressive and obnoxious than Brown’s quiet tone. Think of the transition as «modest rockabilly corrupts itself into brash pub-rock», and you might be getting somewhere. On top of that, Noone’s hyperbolic, braggardly exhibited Cockney accent on the song might be the most transparent representation of Britain’s lower classes to be presented to the American market by 1965 — ultimately, the song became sort of a cult favorite for both the UK and the US punk scene a decade later. And not just because of the vocals, but mostly because of how gleefully it revels in its own simplicity and stupidity. Yes, the arrangement may have been borrowed from Joe Brown, but nowhere in Joe Brown’s version do we find the classic " SECOND VERSE, SAME AS THE FIRST! " (even if Joe’s second verse is indeed the same as the first) that would, ten years later, be famously borrowed by the Ramones for their own ‘Judy Is A Punk’.

If only the typical Herman’s Hermits repertoire consisted of songs like ‘Henery’... but then if it did, they would have entered the musical annals as pioneers of «comedy rock» or «goof-off rock» or whatever, an early precursor to the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and the like, and this would not be quite right. In some strangely perverse manner, I now begin to think that the few songs like ‘Mrs. Brown’ and ‘Henery’ actually work better in the context of general pop music evolution when they are surrounded by boring and inadequate «serious» filler than if they were entirely and completely surrounded by goofy vaudeville and nothing but goofy vaudeville. It sort of goes like this: Herman’s Hermits are a bland, untalented band that fails every time it tries to take itself seriously, but succeeds almost every time it takes itself stupidly. But if it always took itself stupidly, who would even pay serious attention to them in the first place?..

So I’m not going to waste a lot of time bashing all those other songs on this album; most of them really just exist to provide context for ‘Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat’ and ‘Henery The VIII’. Those that are well-known in their more original versions are the quickest to be forgotten: Buddy Holly’s ‘Heartbeat’ (probably recorded for a «pairing» with ‘Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat’) and the Yardbirds’ ‘For Your Love’ only detract from the classic patterns without adding to them. The sentimental ballads (‘The End Of The World’, ‘I’ll Never Dance Again’) were not all that great to begin with, and Peter Noone is not the kind of guy to justify fluffy sentimentality. Only two songs represent semi-original songwriting, courtesy of the highly limited talent of the band’s rhythm guitarist Keith Hopwood: ‘Don’t Try To Hurt Me’ is a run-of-the-mill little rhythm’n’blues pastiche, somewhat in the style of very early Kinks (think ‘Nothing In The World Can Stop Me Worryin’ About That Girl’, etc.), and ‘Tell Me Baby’ is sort of like a watered-down imitation of the Dave Clark Five.

Finally, the good-night-to-y’all closing cover of Cliff Richard’s ‘Travellin’ Light’ throws Peter Noone onto the ring with Cliff in a fight for the «Champion Of The Smooth And Suave» title... and I think that Noone wins on points. More importantly, listening to the song got me thinking about how much the Monkees’ ‘I Can’t Get Her Off My Mind’ owes to it, and, consequently, about how there probably wouldn’t have been any Monkees without Herman’s Hermits to show them the way. Then again, why should we really dream about a world bereft of Herman’s Hermits or Monkees, in which they act as sometimes embarrassing, sometimes entertaining, and occasionally even enlightening court jesters to superior powers? It is only a world in which court jesters overthrow their superiors, like Malcolm of the Legend Of Kyrandia , that is ultimately doomed to extinction, and, fortunately for us, we are still living in 1965 here rather than 2025... ohmygosh, look at the time, actually, I’m outta here!

August 21, 1967: The Who open for Herman’s Hermits at the Gardens

EDMONTON – It was one of the oddest pairing of bands to be thrown together on tour. The only thing weirder was that it was the seminal Who (and The Blues Magoos) opening for pop mop-tops, Herman’s Hermits.

The Who were on their first North American tour when they pulled into town to play the Edmonton Gardens. The Hermits were on their seventh go-round.

Journal music critic Barry Westgate had already weighed in, and he wasn’t expecting much.

“The Herman’s Hermits show apparently bombed in Toronto … there were no more than 3,000 kids in Maple Leaf Gardens,” he wrote in his column several days earlier.

Sure 7,000 tickets had already been sold for the Edmonton show, and prospects were good for an 8,000 house, but “just how were they going to get 8,000 comfortably into the NEW Edmonton Gardens is worth conjecture,” he wrote. “And just how well those at the far end of the jammed arena will be able to see the show is another pertinent question.

“Still, when it comes to the kids and this kind of entertainment it is not so much a matter of what one can SEE or HEAR, It’s strictly a case of finding out who can scream the loudest, become the most hysterical,” Westgate continued.

“That will be a pity for those who don’t mind just LISTENING (they tell me it’s getting to be ‘in’ again to LISTEN to teen entertainers), because Herman’s Hermits have one of the most human sounds in an inhuman business.”

The day after the show, Westgate, gave kudos to The Who for smashing their instruments at the end of their performance — their signature move — as “the kids cheered wildly,” since obviously “groups like Herman’s Hermits will be around long after the likes of The Who and The Blues Magoos.

“They (the Hermits) have built their niche on an intelligible approach to music — not rock, rather something more akin to Old English music hall. And there is very little of the self-indulgent gimmickry that nowadays most of the groups have to exist on,” he wrote.

“Once again the kids have allowed themselves to become part of the … giant hoax called teenage entertainment.”

Forty-seven-years later, The Who are not only still around, although only two original members (Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend) remain, they’re one of the most successful bands of all time, having sold more than 100 million records.

Herman’s Hermits are also still around, now performing as Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone. They have sold 60 million records.

The Blues Magoos continue to perform today, but are the least successful of the three bands.

The Happy Together Tour was one that I had my eye on for a long time, even before the tickets were released, and I couldn’t believe it when the day finally came. All of the acts were absolutely fantastic, but Herman’s Hermits really stood out for me, and it seemed the entire crowd! It’s hard to believe that these guys formed way back in 1963, but boy have they still got it! They sure have.

The vibe at the show was great, everyone was energised and buzzing from the previous acts. The sound was fantastic, and the lighting added spectacularly to the performance value. When Herman’s Hermits came on stage, they were welcomed by a reasonable applause, but it appeared that the audience didn’t know what they were in for – by the end of the set everyone was jumping around, shouting, and singing along.

Nostalgia is a great thing, and hearing tracks like No Milk Today and Mrs Brow, You’ve got a Lovely Daughter had the crowd reminiscing and singing along. Even the younger members of the audience were jamming along to the catchy hooks and melodies half way through their set. This really was a gig for everyone, one not to miss!

Manchester beat/pop outfit Herman's Hermits have appeared under a number of different pseudonyms over the years whilst led by Barry Whitwam and Peter Noone. However since the return of Karl Green in 2014, the original band is back together and are now able to play all the hits in their discography to the loyal crowds.

By looking around the venue, it appears as though some of the ageing audience may have been around to purchase the group's very first album released back in 1965. Although the band members are also ageing now, they still perform with intent and purpose as they clearly still enjoy playing the music and hearing the applause from the crowds and this seems to fuel them to keep going. Tonight's setlist is very much a best of selection with hit singles from their heyday including 'I'm Into Something Good' and 'Just a Little Bit Better' all being aired. The tracks may be dated nowadays, but the manner in which they are delivered is endearing as the group clearly wants to perform a great show for their fanbase.

Great performance! Sounds the same!, High energy, veryinteractive with the audience, funny. The band is totally awesome!

Intro band was not impressive, a bunch of (literally) sweaty old musicians with no charisma, no "moves", didn't move aroubmnd so all audience members were involved and were rather boring

The venue, Coach House, had great seating. Food service was not so good, although the food was good! Drinks were expensive and weak

The Association, Gary Lewis & the Playboys, and Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits) sang at a concert in NY on 9.14.2019

All 3 acts were great !!!

Gary Lewis is still proud that his song "This Diamond Ring" bumped The Beatles from the #1 spot on the music charts back in 1965.

Peter even signed a ton of autographs after the event.

Herman’s Hermits

Herman’s hermits starring peter noone, about herman’s hermits.

Peter Blair Denis Bernard Noone is a multi-talented entertainer, who has been delighting audiences nearly all his life. He was born in Manchester, England, where he studied voice and acting at St. Bede’s College and the Manchester School of Music and Drama. As a child, he played “Stanley Fairclough” in the long-running British soap opera  Coronation Street.  He was also featured in the television series  Knight Errant, Family Solicitor  and  Monro’s Saki Stories .

At the age of fifteen, Peter achieved international fame as “Herman”, lead singer of the legendary pop band Herman’s Hermits. His classic hits include:  “I’m Into Something Good”, “Mrs. Brown, you’ve Got A Lovely Daughter”, “I’m Henry VIII, I Am”, “Silhouettes”, “Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat”, “Wonderful World”, “Just A Little Bit Better”, “There’s A Kind of Hush”, “A Must To Avoid”, “Listen People”, “No Milk Today” “The End of the World” “Leaning On A Lamp Post”,  and  “Dandy”.  Ultimately, Herman’s Hermits sold over fifty-two million recordings. In all, fourteen singles and seven albums went gold.

As “Herman”, the photogenic Noone graced the cover of nearly every international publication including  Time Magazine.  He performed on hundreds of television shows and appeared with such luminaries as Ed Sullivan, Jackie Gleason, Dean Martin and Danny Kaye. He was cast as the engaging “Duke of Cheshire” in ABC’s musical version of  The Canterville Ghost . Soon thereafter, he portrayed the title role in Hallmark Hall of Fame’s  Pinocchio .  He also starred in three highly successful feature films for M-G-M:  Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter, Hold On!  and  When The Boys Meet The Girls.

With characteristic zeal, Peter took on leading roles in full-scale theatrical productions of  Dick Wittington, Aladdin  and  Sinbad The Sailor.  These live stage spectaculars were mounted at major theatres throughout Great Britain and Noone received critical acclaim for his outstanding work. In the eighties, Peter starred on Broadway in the New York Shakespeare Festival’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s  The Pirates of Penzance .  He won rave reviews for his superb portrayal of the dashing, young hero, “Frederic”. His performance was so well received, that he went on to reprise the role at the world-famous Drury Lane Theatre in London. Noone charmed audiences worldwide as he continued to play “Frederic” with both the U.S. National Touring Company and the International Touring Company of “Pirates”.

Peter’s acting career flourished with guest-starring roles in prime-time television series such as:  Married With Children, My Two Dads, Dave’s World, Easy Street, Too Close For Comfort,  and  Laverne and Shirley.  In a memorable episode of  Quantum Leap,  he shed his “nice guy” image to portray “Dwayne”, a scheming promoter with murderous intentions. He starred as “Apoo”, a frustrated African relief worker, in the Los Angeles stage premiere of  Topokana Martyr’s Day  and as Alfred Von Wilmers in the U.S. National Tour of the smash Broadway hit  Romance, Romance.

The nineties found Peter embarking on a four-year stint as the winsome host of VH1’s  My Generation,  the highest-ever-rated half hour retrospective of pop/rock music. More recently, he was featured in the recurring role of “Paddington” on the CBS daytime drama,  As The World Turns .  His legion of fans eagerly awaited each episode and Peter quickly became a favorite of the soap opera magazines and online message boards. He began the millennium with his successful entry into cyberspace and the New York Daily News dubbed him “The King of the Sixties on the Internet” due to the overwhelming popularity of his websites: peternoone.com and hermanshermits.com.

Accompanied by his band, Herman’s Hermits, Noone currently performs over 200 concerts a year. He consistently plays to sold-out venues and his admirers span the generations. Today’s teen girls scream just as passionately as their mothers did back in 1965, prompting VH1 to select Noone as their viewer’s choice for the “Sexiest Artist of the Year”. There is no doubt that Peter Noone’s extraordinary talent, disarming wit, handsome features and compelling stage presence will continue to delight fans of all ages, for a long, long time to come.

Per New York City’s guidance, Sony Hall is requiring all guests, staff & musicians ages 12+ to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to enter. Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!

Tour of Communist Moscow – every day

After the Communist October Revolution in 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Empire and was the center of socialist orbit for more than 70 years. This left its mark on Moscow, even if the USSR disintegrated more than a quarter of a century ago. The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. You will also learn about Stalin’s Great Terror political campaign and the system of the GULAG and how the USSR, the communist Russian republic, became modern Russia.

This place not only has trendy cafes and green squares, but here you can see the most beautiful spray works (according to Albrecht Dürer), hangout-places of the youth and hipsters, as well as learn what Moscow looked like in the 19th century. Here you will also learn exciting and even bloody stories about famous gangsters, eccentric business people and legends like the wandering preacher Rasputin, who is known in Russia either as the “holy devil” or the mad monk. To learn a little more about Moscow’s culture, this is the tour for you. On my alternative tour, you will get to know Moscow away from the tourist hotspots. This tour is of 2 hours duration and you will experience the following on the tour:

Moscow guide&photo! Feel Putin vibes and explore the enigmatic Russian soul through history ...

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
