LET’S GO! Bellroy Passport Travel Folio and Travel Wallet REVIEW
(if you want to see all the features and how many cards and cash it can hold, please watch the video )
It is time to get back into traveling. Do you really need a passport wallet? Bellroy calls their offerings the Travel Folio and Travel Wallet.
The Travel Folio comes in a typical Bellroy pack with a little tag on the bottom, and inside is a single wallet to look at. We have it in the caramel color, but it also comes in obsidian, which is really black, and ocean. Since this is a folio, it has a zipper opening and it has a few pieces of propaganda, example passport, and it comes with an extra refill for the pen, which is a twist micro pen that I kind of like. Pens are required as part of any kind of passport wealth you get. Bellroy is always very good at giving some instructions on how your wallets work. They use different zippers with actually a higher grade than YKK on some of their products. The zipper is fairly large and is not meant to go into your back pocket for sure. This Folio provides various different pockets and feels really good, but of course, we are always dealing with normal type sewing with Bellroy, which is just on the edge of not acceptable, but they tend to make it okay considering the reinforcements that we get in certain areas that will have a lot of wear and tear. You might remember the Bellroy Passport Sleeve , which I thought was brilliant and wish it was still available.
The Travel Wallet comes with the pen as well, which was slightly hard to get out. I also got this in the caramel color, and I chose these colors rather than dark ones so you guys can have a better view of these wallets. This one acts more like a bifold wallet, and actually has a lot of characteristics of the Bellroy Hide and Seek wallet , which is something implemented in a lot of Bellroy products. The wallet’s construction is rolled and has butted sewing together. As mentioned, the sewing is okay and does take care of stress points where you would expect most of the wear and tear. Bellroy offers a three-year warranty against defects or workmanship when under normal use. It is crazy that, with all the technology we have in the world, at least industrialized nations cannot get this into your phone yet.
These are both designed in Australia and made in India. It always rubs me the wrong way as Bellroy never prints in their packaging where their products are made. They always print them in some obscure place in the product itself. Bellroy leathers are premium and I keep looking for full-grain vegetable-tanned or any other rating of the leather but cannot find it anywhere. Bellroy seems to be a wee bit more concerned about the process of making the leather, the fact they use the leather working group, gold-rated tanners, et cetera, than the final quality of leather, which seems to be a lot of hand-waving to me. The price for the travel Folio is $159 and the travel wallet is $139.
As you travel, you will likely carry these in some sort of sling pouch, backpack, or coat pocket, therefore, the size needs to only be reasonable. It does not have to be something you put in your front or rear pocket. Every passport wallet should provide a pen, that is the biggest issue, if you do not have one, then I suggest you get one to include because that is what you use on every international flight.
So should you use a passport wallet or a travel wallet?
As with most things, it depends, but here is my gauge, if you are concerned about protecting your passport from wear and tear, get a simple sleeve that hopefully can accommodate a small pen. If you tend to want to organize your travel all into one place, then determine how much you want to pull together and size your travel wallet accordingly.
Travel companies, and especially wallet companies, romanticize putting everything into a single wallet, but I would really caution against that due to theft. Although the potential of theft largely depends on where you go, you should be sorting out your critical items like passports or copies of your passports from credit cards, cash, other IDs, et cetera, into separate physical places. Keeping them all in one place is a risk that I just do not frankly take.
The final score for the Travel Folio is four for quality, two for price because it is really expensive in my mind, features are good and score a four, usability scores four, and perception scores four, which gives the Travel Folio a final score of 3.6 out 5 .
The Travel Wallet scores four for quality, two for the price, it is still expensive on this end, features score a four because it has quite a few things and you can match this up with a hide and seek. Usability scores a three because I believe it is just not as easy to use, it is just a one big honking wallet. With four for perception, the Travel Wallet gets a final score of 3.4 out of 5 .
For peace of mind zipped up with your travel essentials. This compact travel folio holds two passports, eight cards and cash hidden in the back.
Fit your travel documents in your pocket. The Travel Wallet organizes your passport, cash, 10 cards and a Micro Pen into a premium leather bifold.

What is RFID?
RFID-blocking wallets are designed to help protect you from a specific type of theft called RFID skimming. This is where information from high frequency (13.56MHz) RFID-based credit cards, passports and transport passes are read and duplicated. For a more detailed article on RFID and what types of cards it protects we recommend this balanced explanation by our friends at Carryology .

Full Review
If you’re looking for a place to store all of your travel documents—boarding passes, passport(s), cash, cards, SIM cards, visas, whatever—then the Bellroy Travel Folio should be on your radar.
This nifty travel wallet is full of features. And—unlike some of its competition on the market—these features are handy when you need them and out of your way when you don’t. What kind of features, you ask? Read on and find out.
Materials & Aesthetic
We’re digging the simple, sophisticated look of the Bellroy Travel Folio. At the time of this review, it’s available in four colorways—Navy, Black, Caramel, and Tangelo. We’ve been testing the Black, which we think is particularly sleek.
But the Black can blend in with its surroundings on dark surfaces or in your backpack. So if you’re the type of person who may accidentally leave this folio on the table in an airport cafe (you know who you are) or panic and empty your entire backpack looking for it because you’re not 100% you grabbed it that morning (you also know who you are) you may want to opt for a brighter color.
We love all the small details on this folio. The beautiful stitching along the perimeter, the Bellroy name stamped into the exterior, and the adorable owl logo on the interior—as well as the sleek silver zipper—all enforce its overall classy vibe.
Plus, this folio is made of premium leather. Bellroy’s origin story involves a quest for creating high-end leather products, and the team has only gotten better at it as the company has grown. Bellroy uses leather from gold-rated Leather Working Group tanneries, which ensures the tanning process is done sustainably (as much as possible at present, anyway).
This leather is soft and supple. It’s more sensitive to the elements than synthetic materials, but we like this sensitivity. It usually wears in such a way that’s not only beautiful, but unique. Of course, you’ll still want to take care of it so you don’t end up with a water-damaged, scratched-up folio that’s unique in how it’s totally ruined.
Inside the Folio
While we like the sleek exterior of the Bellroy Travel Folio, we’re really loving the interior—where all those aforementioned features come in to play.
First up, we have the left side of the folio. This is where you can store your specifically-for-travel documents, including your passport, visas, and boarding documents. The front pocket is for your passport. It works really well, especially if you’re a solo traveler. If you’re traveling with a friend or partner, however, you can’t successfully put two passports here—it’ll be way too tight. And, unlike what’s depicted in Bellroy’s marketing materials, you can’t keep a second passport in the sleeve behind it either. Again, it’ll be too tight and cumbersome to access.
This is obviously not a deal-breaker because this folio isn’t advertised as a great tool for traveling couples, but it would be nice to have a spot to keep two passports together. This folio does fit two passports, but we’ve had to put the second in a different spot (more on this in a second).
Behind the passport pocket is a sleeve for whatever random assortment of documents you end up collecting on the road—tickets, boarding passes, and visas most commonly. Now, we haven’t had much success with fitting boarding passes or tickets here. They’re almost always too long unless you fold them a few times (which isn’t a huge deal).
For the most part, visas fit really well. But the size of the visa depends on the country, so we can’t say it’ll always work.
On the right side of the wallet, you can stash all your cards (whether they’re of the credit, debit, or business variety). In the front, you have three slots for the cards you access most frequently. Behind that, you have a spare slot for those cards you need only every once and awhile. Bellroy advertises that you can fit up to eight cards total.
Behind the divider is a large spot for more random documents and any notes (whether they’re of the currency, love, or to-do variety). We’ve actually had more luck folding up cash and sticking it in the spare card slot as it’s easier to see and access. But you make this folio work for you.
Once again, boarding documents don’t fit here super well. You’ll have to fold them. And if you’re the type who prints tickets out at home on a regular-sized piece of paper, you’ll have to fold it into eighths to make it work. Even folded, it’ll usually be caught in the crease when you close up this folio. Of course, this isn’t a huge deal as long as you’re not creasing it on any barcodes or things of that nature. So, be mindful.
Behind that, there’s also another large spot for whatever else you’ve got. Bellroy suggests cash, although we’ve used it for that second passport we mentioned earlier.
We really like that you can make this internal organization work for you. The pockets aren’t so-perfectly sized that they’ll only work for exactly what the designers at Bellroy intended—you do you. We also love that every compartment is easy to see and access.
Now, we’re not actually done with the pocket tour just yet.
You’ll also find a SIM card pocket, which is super handy while traveling. Beneath it is a tiny slit that holds your ejector pin to help make the SIM card transfer process as seamless as possible. They’re both discrete—there if you need it, out of the way if you don’t.
The same thing can be said for the Bellroy mini-pen that comes with this folio. We’re huge fans of this pen and love the fact that it’s included. We always keep pens on us while traveling, but they’re not always the sleekest to carry. This pen—which is tiny—stays tucked away in the small pen slot in the middle of this folio until you reach for it. We actually tend to forget about it until we need it, which happens often when you’re zipping around the world.
The not-so-glamorous or Instagramable truth of traveling is that it tends to involve paperwork. A lot of paperwork. So having a pen with you comes in handy.
Of course, this pen is not ideal for novel writing. It has nothing on fancy pens with magical ink , but it’s great for scribbling down our answers on customs forms and whatnot. However, if you’re a pen snob (no judgment—some members of our team are too!) Bellroy claims you can stick other pens in this slot. Which is true…sort of. You just have to use a pen slim enough to fit.
Either way, we like that there’s a pen spot that doesn’t add any extra bulk.
Features & Usage
The Bellroy Travel Folio is decently small for a travel wallet (just look at the Aer Travel Wallet or the Fjallraven Passport Pocket ) which is both good and bad, although we tend to see it as mostly a positive. It’ll fit in most quick-grab backpack pockets, which is always a huge plus. But it won’t seamlessly fit boarding documents unless you fold them. We’re okay sacrificing the latter for the former, but there are bigger travel folios out there if you’d prefer crease-free documents.
This folio is also RFID-blocking, which is certainly a feature. While there are no hard numbers on how many RFID financial crimes are committed (it can be hard to determine how credit card information is stolen once it’s already been stolen), not having to worry about the possibility always provides peace of mind. You also won’t have to worry about your passport information or hotel key card information being collected by criminals with an RFID reader.
Durability & Testing
We’ve been testing the Bellroy Travel Folio for two months now in multiple U.S. states and around the U.K.—and it’s been a great travel companion.
The easiest way to have a tough time traveling is to get disorganized. Nobody wants to scramble to find that boarding pass you-just-know-is-in-your-backpack-somewhere—but seriously where is it!?—as the boarding line builds behind you (turns out it was in your back pocket the whole time).
Keeping your documents, cash, cards, and SIM card in one spot is super handy. And the usefulness of having a tiny pen to fill out paperwork as you exit and enter a country, or rent a car, or anything else on the go, can’t be understated.
And it’s held up well so far. Although a few small scratches have marred the leather exterior, it’s not in a bad or super-noticeable way—you have to know they’re there to see them—but still, something to note.
Usage Timeline
Condition: Excellent
- Lots of internal organization.
- We’re digging that we can use this to keep all of our travel documents, cards, and cash in one place.
- Also includes a micro pen, which is super handy.
Everything still looks great!
Condition: Good
We’ve noticed a few small scratches on the exterior.

I've Been a Digital Nomad for 8 Years. 8 Unusual Gadgets I Always Pack
Commentary: If you want to cultivate a work-and-travel lifestyle, you need the right gear without being bogged down. Here's what I bring.
- Publisher's Weekly bestselling author with over 2,000 articles published in 100 publications and magazines.
I vividly remember the first time I traveled. I was 10 years old when my mother sent my brother and I to Mombasa, Kenya. She's Kenyan and wanted us to experience our culture and meet family. She couldn't travel with us because of work, so my brother and I traveled from Milwaukee as unaccompanied minors. I was just old enough to be amazed by the experience of flying, walking through airports and landing in a country where English wasn't the primary language.
Decades later, in 2013, I had my first big work trip as an adult. I'm a consultant who owns a software company, and a corporation in Sydney hired me to come to its offices and train its team.
Flying to Sydney was a surreal experience. The client paid for Premium Economy seats on Virgin Atlantic, and the plane had a full bar. My hotel overlooked Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House. It was on this trip that I realized how much I loved working abroad, and the nomadic lifestyle began to call me.
The author in Sydney in 2013.
But I couldn't be a digital nomad yet; three young children waited for me stateside, where I had a home, cars and everything else that comes with a "normal" life. I continued to travel for my business, but they were shorter trips, which piqued my interest in what it would be like to live in Tokyo, South Korea, London, Dublin, Cairo and other places I visited. From 2013 to 2016, I traveled to 38 countries for corporate consulting training contracts.
Later, when my children were older and living with their mom, I got serious about being a digital nomad. As the possibility of nomadic life became increasingly real, though, moments of excitement were quickly overtaken with the sinking feeling that I was abandoning my children and family.
Therapy helped me understand that two things can be true: I can live a nomadic lifestyle, and I can still be there for my children. My kids were supportive of my lifestyle as a digital nomad. So, in 2016, I sold all my material possessions, sold my home and relocated to Medellin, Colombia, to embrace full-time digital nomadism.
Since then, I've lived and worked in Mexico City, the UK, Paris, Madrid, Nairobi, Bangkok, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Cape Town, Rome, Lisbon, Nice and Barcelona.
Digital nomadism has allowed the author to visit nearly 90 countries.
What I like and don't like about being a digital nomad
What I like most about being a digital nomad is how freeing the lifestyle is. I like having fewer material possessions and the ability to travel anywhere, anytime. I enjoy experiencing new cultures, history and the foods of other countries. Consulting and digital nomadism have allowed me to travel to 88 countries and live in over a dozen. I've been able to build my business and be touristy; I work Monday through Friday, then explore whatever country I'm in on the weekends.
What's hard about being a digital nomad is being far away from my family. Technologies like FaceTime, Zoom and social media make connecting more accessible, but it's not the same as hugging my kids and hanging out with them in person. Luckily, my nomadic lifestyle means I can travel to them whenever I want.
8 unusual gadgets I always pack
As a digital nomad, tech is essential for both work and life. I need to be able to do everything I would do if I had an office, but in an Airbnb, hotel or apartment rental instead. Some of my gear is obvious, like my laptop ( M3 MacBook Pro ), smartphone ( iPhone 15 Pro Max ) and tracking tags ( AirTags ).
The author's work hardware for nomadic travel.
Below are a few of my more nomad-specific gear picks.
iPad Magic Keyboard Folio
I spend a lot of time on airplanes, and a laptop is not always convenient to use, especially on local carriers in Europe. I travel with an iPad Air because I use it to work on planes, watch movies and streaming series and take video calls. Apple's Magic Keyboard sleeve is an iPad cover, but I also use it for the keyboard functionality in tight spaces.
Audio Technica ATR2100x-USB Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
Since I own a business, I do a lot of media interviews. Good sound is essential, so I travel with an Audio Technica ATR2100x-USB Cardioid Dynamic Microphone. The microphone is portable and has multiple ports so that I can connect it to my laptop or iPad.
Anker MagGo Power Bank
Early in my digital nomad life, I learned that I can't depend on airports, hotels or other places for power. I travel with an Anker MagGo Power Bank to power my gadgets when wall outlets are unavailable. I like this power bank (versus the others I've tried) because it has a usage indicator and 15x fast charging.
AirFly Bluetooth Adapter
This Bluetooth wireless audio transmitter receiver works with AirPods or wireless headphones. You plug the gadget into an airplane or train's entertainment center, allowing you to pair your wireless device. It creates a Bluetooth connection anywhere there's a regular headphone jack.
Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700
I've been a fan of Bose headphones and bought a pair of the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 a few years ago. I use these headphones to watch entertainment on flights and at the places I'm staying. The Bose Headphones fit more comfortably than AirPods.
Read our Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 review .
Apple EarPods
I like to also pack a set of wired headphones just in case something happens with my regular AirPods or I can't get my Bluetooth devices to work. If you scoop these up, make sure you have the necessary dongles for both your phone and computer.
Anker 332 USB Power Strip
I have all the international adaptors, but there can sometimes be a shortage of outlets where I'm staying, so I always travel with an extension cord -- it's an underestimated item in my opinion. This Anker power strip lets me use one international adapter with the extension cord and then plug in all my other cables. Surge protection is also important because every country regulates power differently.
Kings Loot Wallet with AirTag Holder
I travel mainly with credit cards, but also some cash, which is always helpful in other countries. A good RFID wallet brings me peace of mind. The Kings Loot wallet has RFID protection, but is also slim and comfortable, and there's also a slot on the front to slide in an AirTag.
Make your travel tech work for you
Whether you're embarking on a long remote work trip or exploring digital nomadism, the right gear makes the journey easier and more enjoyable along the way. Experiment with your setup on your next work trip to find what works best for you.

The Best Travel Wallets: Australian Guide
- September 5, 2023
- Travel Gear
Travel Wallets are designed to store your passport and other important items like travel cards, ID, money and tickets while travelling. They’ll ensure your passport doesn’t get damaged or lost.
The Best Travel Wallets
Here are my top travel wallet picks that are available in Australia:
Bellroy Travel Folio – My top pick
The Bellroy Travel Folio is a beautifully made travel wallet. The 2nd generation of their Travel Folio now includes a zip. This will hold everything securely inside with no risk of anything falling out. However it also features a really handy slip pocket on the outside so you can easily keep your passport and tickets within easy reach at the airport and then put them in the zipper pocket later.
The Bellroy Travel Folio includes a micro pen. This is really handy when going through customs and on the plane when you need to fill out arrival cards. There is even a hidden pocket to securely keep your SIM card, if you’ve swapped it out for a travel sim.
Like most travel wallets, the Bellroy Folio has RFID protection.
Overall I think the Bellroy Travel Wallet is one of the most thoughtfully designed and well made travel wallets I’ve come across. It’s the one I travel with. It’s more expensive than many others, but I think the higher quality construction and thoughtful design is well worth it. It makes a great gift for any traveller!

Amazon Basics Travel Wallet
If you’re after a cheap travel wallet that does the job and also looks pretty good, the Amazon Basics Travel Wallet is a good choice.
This travel wallet has room for 1 passport in a slip pocket as well space for multiple cards and room to slip cash notes into.
The Amazon Basics Travel Wallet is about the size of an Australian Passport so it doesn’t take up a lot of room and is quite thin.
Find out More
Vulkit Travel Wallet
The Vulkit Travel Wallet comes in 6 different colours. It has space for a passport, 6 cards, notes and tickets.
While the design of this travel wallet is quite long, it doesn’t feel that big and it’s still very slim.
What to Look for in a Travel Wallet
Most travel wallets have enough room to store a passport alongside some cards. If you want to store your airline tickets in the wallet, I’d recommend going for one of the wallets that feature a longer design.
If you want to carry your’s and your travel companions passport in the one wallet, I’d recommend the Bellroy, which I can confirm carries two passports at once. If you’re just holding onto your own passport the other wallets will suffice.
All the travel wallets that I’ve recommended have RFID protection. While skimming attacks are very rare, it’s a nice addition to know that your credit cards and passport are safe.

It was a pre-order for it to be released June 30th but said I'll receive it by June 21 which I was fine with.
