The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer will arrive in 2024

VW has confirmed that an all-electric estate is coming next year. Great news for big boot fans

Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer Top Gear

Maybe the estate car isn’t dead just yet. Internet, say hello to the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer.

Well, say a tentative hello, because this is our very first look at the all-electric estate and it’s still wearing its full camouflage suit. It’s not like there’s a huge amount to hide though, this car was previewed by the ID. Space Vizzion concept in 2019 and will essentially be an ID.7 saloon with a bigger boot.

We’re rather excited though, not least because the Tourer won’t have too many rivals in the EV estate market when it arrives at some point in 2024.

We don’t have any Tourer-specific details just yet, but the ID.7 saloon claims 435 miles of range on a single charge when equipped with the larger 86kWh battery. It also gets a 282bhp motor, up to 200kW rapid charging and a 15-inch touchscreen at the centre of its dash.

New Volkswagen ID.3 Tour Pro S 2021 review

The new volkswagen id.3 tour pro s comes with a bigger 77kwh battery, but is it worth the extra cash.

id tour vw

4.0 out of 5

New car deals logo

If you’re sure you’ll regularly need the extra range, this flagship ID.3 could appeal. It delivers the extra miles with the same solid driving dynamics and excellent practicality as the rest of the line-up. What it can’t quite escape is the extra expense that comes with more cells. That keeps it comfortably north of the Plug-in Car Grant, so it looks a little costly compared with more modest versions.

Is this where the VW ID.3 gets serious? We’ve had 1st Edition models so far, and Pro Performance variants, all with a 58kWh battery. But now here is the 77kWh (usable) version installed in the ID.3 variant that really targets long range: the Tour Pro S.

The fundamentals do not really change, of course. This is a five-door family hatchback – Golf -sized, which is no coincidence – and it sits on MEB, the VW Group’s modular fully electric platform. But instead of that Pro battery pack, with up to 263 miles of range, this Tour has the Pro S, which VW claims can keep the ID.3 running for up to 336 miles.

Best electric cars - header image

For now at least, Tour trim is the only way you can get the Pro S powertrain, and you’ll pay for it. This car retails at £42,600 – no Plug-in Car Grant here, then – well over £10k up on the entry point to the ID.3 range.

Aside from the extra distance between charges, though, you do at least get plenty of standard kit. There’s useful stuff, such as dual-zone air-con, keyless entry, a rear-view camera, matrix LED headlights, and electric adjustment on the front seats. There’s up to 125kW rapid charging as standard, too, allowing the car to get from five to 80 per cent of its charge in just under 40 minutes.

Then there are more, well, incidental additions to the equipment list – 19-inch alloys and 30 possible colours of interior ambient lighting, for example.

As you might expect, these trinkets have little effect on how the ID.3 behaves on the road. Unlike the cheaper but smaller-battery Max edition, the Tour Pro S doesn’t come with adaptive dampers – but it’s still far from unpleasant, even on 19-inch wheels.

Around town there’s enough compliance and you won’t hear any thunks or grumbles from the suspension – an important factor in a car that makes little more than a dull whine under hard acceleration.

At higher speeds the ID.3’s heft means it’s not exactly up for being thrown around, but you shouldn’t be troubled by most road surfaces. It’s a comfortable cruiser and swift enough, particularly when accelerating from rest. The 0-62mph dash takes 7.9 seconds – a modest figure for a pure-electric car, but then it’s worth remembering that the Tour Pro S has the same 201bhp rear-mounted electric motor as the bulk of the range, while carrying extra kilos due to its bigger battery. Its kerbweight is more than 1,900kg.

The rest of the dynamic make-up already feels familiar. This is a car that, in effect, replaces the e-Golf , and for all the snazzy cabin tech, it’s the sort of vehicle that would do a similarly good job of just melting into your everyday life. The extra practicality – strong rear legroom, to match the Golf-sized boot – helps further with this, too.

Volkswagen ID.3 Tour Pro S - dash

The extra range may help if you can plan your driving and identify situations where you know you’ll need it. Of course, you’re unlikely to hit the full 336 miles, but based on our (mainly urban) experience, just shy of 300 should be easily achievable.

This is also the first ID.3 we’ve tried with the much-touted augmented-reality head-up display system – deemed so important by the development team that accommodating its bulky projection box is said to have influenced the design of the MEB platform.

We’re not entirely convinced it’s worth the trouble – but it’s a neat enough bit of tech in practice. You get arrows pointing straight ahead when you’re following the in-built nav instructions; then as you approach a turning, the system points in the proposed direction of travel and these arrows grow in size until they are gesturing directly into the road in question.

It takes a little getting used to – to start with, it just seems like another thing to focus on, instead of a feature designed to make life easier. There’s an additional cue with a sweeping light across the dash in the direction of the sat-nav’s instruction, too.

Neither of these features can overcome the shortcomings of the ID.3’s cabin, though; some of the hardware (5.3-inch digital instrument panel and 10-inch infotainment screen) is impressive, but elements of the finish still feel a little cheap, and the removal of conventional controls for some key features, such as the heating and ventilation, still baffles us. The car may be a slow burner, but we’re struggling to see how this component will ever win us over.

New Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer: specs and full details for the practical electric estate

Vw’s electric exec gets a practical estate model with a 605-litre boot and 426-mile range.

id tour vw

Almost a year after the Volkswagen ID.7 fastback electric saloon was revealed, VW has unveiled a new, more practical estate version, badged as the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer.

Looking much the same as the standard car from the front, the Tourer benefits from a much higher roofline at the rear, meaning it boasts 565 litres of space behind the rear seats. While this is only 32 litres more than the standard car, the boxier shape of the Tourer’s boot should make it easier to load larger items. Furthermore, owners can straighten the rear seats to a more upright position to expand space to 605 litres – more than even the new BMW i5 Touring – and maintain the ability to carry rear passengers.

Unfortunately, unlike the UK’s best-selling EV, the Tesla Model Y , the ID.7 doesn’t have a ‘frunk’ under the bonnet for storing cables. However, those planning to use the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer as a zero-emissions load lugger can fold down the rear seats to reveal 1,714 litres of storage. Volkswagen also says the ID.7 Tourer is rated to tow braked trailers weighing up to 1,200kg.

Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer - boot

As mentioned, the Tourer is fundamentally similar to the standard Volkswagen ID.7 in terms of general design. There are some differences, though; the Tourer gets a contrasting roof with matching roof rails, as well as a premium-looking aluminium trip that stretches from the C-pillar, all the way to the front of the car, emphasising the Touring’s almost five-metre length.

On the inside, however, things are almost identical to the fastback model; the ID.7 debuts a new approach to interior design for VW, featuring more premium materials than the somewhat plasticky VW electric car cabins we’ve seen of late.

The focus of the interior is a 13-inch touchscreen, which sits above a set of – thankfully, illuminated – touch-sensitive climate control sliders and is complemented by a slim digital instrument cluster that’s nestled within the dashboard. It runs VW’s latest infotainment system which, from our experience in the standard ID.7, is a marked step up from the glitchy and laggy software Volkswagen has been installing in its cars of late.

Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer - interior

Unlike the regular Volkswagen ID.7 which is currently only available in a singular ‘Pro Match S’ specification, the Tourer will instead be offered in various guises at launch. Buyers will be able to choose from two battery sizes – 77kWh and 86kWh – with both being powered by a single, rear-mounted 282bhp electric motor.

According to VW, the smaller of the pair of batteries is sufficient for a range of up to 372 miles – only 12 miles less than the saloon. The 86kWh unit is not yet offered in the standard ID.7 and it provides a claimed range of up to 426 miles. The two battery sizes can rapid charge at a DC speed of 170kW and 200kW respectively, although given the difference in outright capacity, both take 28 minutes to complete a 10-80% top-up at their maximum charging rates.

Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer - header

The German giant remains secretive regarding the ID.7 Tourer’s performance figures, though we don’t suspect the estate will be far off the standard ID.7’s 6.5-second 0-62mph time. Of course, the 86kWh car will almost inevitably be slightly slower than that, due to the weight of the bigger battery. Those looking for more performance should hold out for the forthcoming GTX model which is set to feature a dual electric motor setup and somewhere in the region of 400bhp.

The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer is due to go on sale in the summer and UK pricing is yet to be confirmed. Given that the standard car retails for £51,550, we expect a small uplift for the estate, probably in the region of around £2,000 to £3,000. This would still make the ID.7 around £10,000 cheaper than even the entry-level BMW i5 Touring, though expect big battery versions to top £60,000.

World premiere of the VW ID.7 Tourer: The Variant just got electric competition

With the Passat Variant, VW not only has a classic company car in its range, but the mid-range estate is also a popular family car. With the ID.7 Tourer, the carmaker now unveiled an internal rival model - with a purely electric drive.

id tour vw

While the new-generation Passat is only available as an estate, VW started with the saloon version of the electric ID.7 – you can read our first driving report on the MEB saloon here . With the ID.7 Tourer, VW has now launched an electric mid-size estate – but without the traditional name suffix ‘Variant’. Instead, the ID.7 estate is a ‘Tourer’.

According to VW, the Tourer “is a fusion of a classic estate in the format of the Passat and a particularly dynamic shooting brake such as the Arteon.” The rear is higher than on the dynamic Arteon Shooting Brake and even higher than on a saloon. Nevertheless, the roofline drops visibly earlier and ends in a flatter rear window than on the Passat.

And yes, the ID.7 Tourer can’t quite keep up with the Variant. The Passat estate has a capacity of up to 1,920 litres with the rear seats folded down, compared to a maximum of 1,714 litres in the more lifestyle-oriented ID.7. With up to five people (and thus raised rear seats), the Tourer can still accommodate 605 litres.

id tour vw

Incidentally, VW does not want to recognise a direct competitive situation. “Both product lines complement each other and together cover all relevant drive types – from the purely electric drive in the ID.74 and ID.7 Tourer1 to the plug-in hybrid, mild hybrid, petrol and diesel drives in the Passat. This means Volkswagen offers an extremely wide range of state-of-the-art models in the upper mid-sized class,” the press release states.

The Tourer’s drive system is based on the technology of the saloon – after all, it is also an MEB model. With the more powerful and efficient APP550 electric motor, which made its debut in the saloon, there has been a significant update to the drive system, but in terms of development status, competitor models (admittedly not as an estate) have already arrived at 800-volt technology.

There are two variants available for the European market launch, which differ in terms of the battery. The ID.7 Tourer Pro is equipped with the familiar 77 kWh battery, while the ID.7 Tourer Pro S (like the saloon) has a battery with 86 kWh of energy content in the underbody. VW has not yet provided final homologated range data. Based on current forecasts, the larger battery is expected to last up to 685 kilometres, according to WLTP – the saloon with the same battery has a range of up to 700 kilometres. Regardless of the battery, the aforementioned APP550 delivers 210 kW of power and 545 Nm of torque.

The 77 kWh battery can be charged with up to 175 kW at a corresponding fast-charging station, while the Pro S with 86 kWh can be charged with up to 200 kW peak. According to VW, the standard charging process for the ID.7 Pro from 10 to 80 per cent will take 28 minutes, while it will take “significantly less than 30 minutes” for the ID.7 Pro S. An onboard charger with 11 kW is installed for AC charging. As with the saloon, the battery is automatically preconditioned for planned fast-charging stops. It can also be manually activated via the charging menu in the infotainment.

There are no surprises in the interior of the estate – the layout with the larger touchscreen and the new menu navigation is the same as in the saloon. However, the ID.7 Tourer also features the latest version of the IDA voice assistant – with integrated ChatGPT functionality, as announced at the CES . The system will be able to answer “specific questions on all conceivable subjects” using online databases and ChatGPT’s AI.

Another new feature is an optional “Wellness In-Car App.” It can be used to adjust various vehicle functions via preconfigured programmes to optimise well-being while driving or during breaks.

A quick look at the hard facts: At 4.96 metres, the Tourer is just as long as the saloon, and the wheelbase is also the same at 2.97 metres – after all, both models are built in Emden, Germany. The dimensions of the boot are also the same at one metre wide and 1.07 metres long up to the rear seats. The additional 73 litres in the five-seater version (and an extra 128 litres with the back seats folded down) can be attributed to the new roofline and the different boot lid. There is a trailer hitch, but in the press release, VW only mentions the drawbar load of 75 kilograms, which should be enough for two electric bikes on a bike rack. However, it can be assumed that the towing capacity will be 1,200 kilograms, as with the saloon.

VW only allows a higher towing capacity for the MEB models with all-wheel drive. That has not yet been announced for the ID.7 – regardless of the body – but is likely.

VW has yet to announce prices for the premiere of the ID.7 Tourer. The estate will undoubtedly be more expensive than the saloon, which, in the case of the ID.7 Pro, is currently listed at 56,995 euros in Germany.

Is the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 a Good Electric SUV? 5 Pros, 3 Cons

volkswagen id4 awd pro s 2023 05 exterior profile scaled jpg

By Jim Travers

Launched as a 2021 model, the Volkswagen ID.4 is an all-electric compact SUV designed to offer buyers in an increasingly crowded field something with distinct VW flavor and driving dynamics. The ID.4 largely succeeds at its mission, and a lower-priced version for 2023 followed by more updates for 2024 only add to the appeal. But the ID.4 is saddled with touch-sensitive controls that are frustrating and distracting enough that they keep a good electric SUV from being great.

With its lively performance, helpful trip-planning technology, and a spacious and comfortable interior, the ID.4 comes well positioned to compete with other electric vehicles like the Ford Mustang Mach-E , Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Nissan Ariya . Volkswagen is building on that with added features and the availability of more power for the 2024 model year .

Unfortunately, those virtues are largely overshadowed by the ID.4’s frustrating controls, as Cars.com Senior Road Test Editor Mike Hanley found while spending time with an all-wheel-drive 2023 ID.4 in the Pro S trim. Tap the link above for his expert review; for a quicker look, here are five things we like about the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 and three things we don’t.

Things We Like

volkswagen id4 awd pro s 2023 32 interior backseat scaled jpg

1. Not Too Stiff

The Pro S trim comes with 20-inch wheels and tires, a setup that can often result in a stiffer ride when compared with smaller wheels with taller-sidewall tires. But thanks to an impressive job of chassis tuning, the ID.4 rides reasonably well, with only some harshness over rough pavement. Overall, the ride is considerably more comfortable than the Mustang Mach-E’s, if not as absorbent as the Ioniq 5’s.

2. Plentiful Power

With its dual-motor drivetrain good for a total of 295 horsepower, our ID.4 Pro S test car delivered smooth, immediate power, making for effortless acceleration whether darting through city traffic or on the open road. On the highway, there’s adequate power in reserve for drama-free merging and passing.

3. Good Visibility

Thin front roof pillars, big side mirrors and large side windows make it easy to see what’s around you, and a large, vivid backup camera view helps with visibility while backing up and parking. The large B-pillars can make it harder to see what’s over your shoulder, but a standard blind spot warning system helps make up for that.

4. Travel-Ready Touchscreen

The standard 12-inch touchscreen provides sharp graphics and resolution and comes with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay . The system is easy enough to use, although it would be better with physical controls for audio volume and tuning. Navigation is standard, and it includes a trip-planning feature that not only displays places to stop and charge the ID.4, but how long each charging stop should take, as well.

5. Room to Move

The ID.4’s cabin is roomy enough to comfortably accommodate adults of all sizes, and that’s true even when taller people are seated in both rows at the same time. Backseat room is particularly good for the class. The Pro S trim has simulated leather seats, and the front seats are heated but not ventilated on 2023 models. That changes for the 2024 version, which has available ventilated seats.

Things We Don’t Like

volkswagen id4 awd pro s 2023 16 interior steering wheel controls scaled jpg

1. Spongy Brake Pedal

In normal Drive mode, the ID.4 coasts like a conventional vehicle when you take your foot off the accelerator, without the more aggressive regenerative braking that’s common with some EVs. In this mode, the brake pedal feels numb and spongy when bringing the vehicle to a halt. The braking is largely handled by the electric motors, with the conventional brakes activating only when more stopping power is needed. Switching to Brake mode ratchets up the regenerative braking, but it’s not enough to bring the ID.4 to a complete stop without tapping the brake pedal.

2. Touchy Subject

Screen-based touch controls work well enough if properly designed, but touch controls outside the environment of a touchscreen are another matter. The ID.4’s cabin is a rolling illustration of this and is packed with touch-sensitive controls on the dash, touchpads instead of buttons on the steering wheel, and more of the same for the driver’s door-mounted mirror and lock controls. None are as intuitive or easy to use as conventional knobs or buttons.

3. Short on Switches

Another notably odd choice on the controls front is VW’s decision to not include switches for each of the four power windows on the driver-side door, opting instead to provide only two switches and another touch-sensitive control to select between the front or rear windows. Whether a cost-cutting move or one intended to create a more minimalist look, we’d rather Volkswagen go back to using separate switches for each window.

VW teases ID.7 Tourer – its first electric wagon

id tour vw

Following the unveiling of its ID.7 electric saloon earlier this year, German automotive giant Volkswagen has teased camouflaged photos of the ID.7 Tourer, an all-electric estate wagon which will launch in Europe in 2024.

Still in its pixellated “Indian summer” camouflage, the ID.7 Tourer wagon will line up next to the ID.7 sedan but will boast 545 litres of boot space even with 5 occupants. However, when the back row of seats are folded down, the volume of the almost two-metre-long cargo space expands up to 1,714 litres.

Like all models in Volkswagen’s ID. family, the new body shape of the ID.7 is based on the company’s MEB platform but with a longer wheelbase to provide for the extra cargo space.

id tour vw

Just like the ID.7 sedan which was officially unveiled earlier this year , the ID.7 Tourer is seriously aerodynamic, with a coefficient of drag of 0.24, compared to the 0.23 of the ID.7 sedan.

Given that with these impressive aerodynamics the ID.7 sedan is set to offer a range of up to 621 kilometres , one would expect the ID.7 Tourer to offer something similar.

The final design will be unveiled “in the coming months” and will officially launch in 2024 – though it is uncertain just what part of the year Volkswagen is targeting.

We do know that, like the ID.7, the ID.7 Tourer will be built at the Volkswagen plant in Emden. Unfortunately, Volkswagen makes no mention of plans for launching the ID.7 Tourer outside of Europe, meaning it’ll be a while before we find out if the all-electric estate wagon will ever make its way to Australia.

Electric all-rounder of a new era: world premiere of the ID.7 Tourer from Volkswagen

  • Large estate car: with the ID.7 Tourer , one of the first electric estate cars in the upper mid-sized class makes its debut in Europe
  • Generous space: the ID.7 Tourer offers space for five people with up to 605 litres of luggage. With two people on board, the load capacity increases to up to 1,714 litres
  • Long range: the ID.7 Tourer will be available with two battery sizes. The top-of-the-range version is expected to achieve ranges of up to 685 km
  • Outstanding comfort: a new automatic air conditioner, optionally available seats with pressure-point massage and air conditioning, and the new Wellness In Car app offer a premium-class experience

The ID.7 is the flagship among electric Volkswagen models – a progressive fastback saloon with a long range. Volkswagen is now expanding the ID.7 portfolio in Europe with an estate car: the all-new ID.7 Tourer . It is one of the first all-electric estate cars in the upper mid-sized class. Volkswagen is also represented in this class with the new Passat Variant. Both product lines complement each other and together cover all relevant drive types – from highly efficient petrol and diesel engines to plug-in hybrids with a predicted electric range of more than 100 kilometres (WLTP) and all-electric vehicles. The new ID.7 Tourer combines the emissions advantages of electric mobility with long WLTP ranges (up to 685 km ), a high-quality cockpit landscape, outstanding travel comfort and superior spaciousness – making it an ideal business car. Europe-wide presales are scheduled to start in the first quarter of this year.

Strong upper mid-sized class. Imelda Labbé, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management, responsible for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, says: “The new ID.7 Tourer is a perfect estate model, especially for families and long-distance drivers. With plenty of space and a high level of comfort, it impresses fully electrically with long ranges!" The ID.7 Tourer will be produced together with the ID.7 fastback saloon and the ID.4 SUV at the electric mobility plant in Emden, Germany.

The all-electric Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer

Electric all-rounder. The ID.7 Tourer differs significantly from the fastback saloon at the rear. The long roof line and its elegant transition to the boot lid in particular are striking design features of the electric estate. In terms of style, the Tourer is a fusion of a classic estate in the format of the Passat, and a dynamic shooting brake such as the Arteon. Thanks to the increased height at the rear, the luggage compartment volume is even larger than that of the fastback saloon: with five people on board, the ID.7 Tourer has a luggage capacity of up to 605 litres (rear seat backrest in cargo position). When loaded up to the backrests of the front seats and up to the roof, this figure rises to up to 1,714 litres.

Up to 685 km WLTP range . The new ID.7 Tourer is equipped with the latest-generation electric drive system. Volkswagen will offer two different battery sizes for the ID.7 Tourer. Depending on the battery energy content, the electric touring car is expected to achieve WLTP ranges of up to 685 km. The largest battery is designed for a maximum charging capacity of up to 200 kW at DC quick-charging stations. At this power level, the battery can be recharged from 10 to 80 per cent in significantly less than 30 minutes.

The all-electric Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer

AR head-up display as standard. The new ID.7 Tourer will be launched with innovative technological features, including an augmented-reality (AR) head-up display equipped as standard. This projects information relevant to the journey into the driver’s field of vision, so their eyes can stay focused on the road. At the same time, the AR head-up display changes the cockpit architecture because it allows classic instruments to become compact.

The all-electric Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer

New Wellness In-Car app. In the new ID.7 Tourer Volkswagen is implementing premium-class comfort. This is made possible with details such as vents that are automatically operated by small control motors, and ergoActive seats with a new pressure-point massage function and automatic air conditioning . Another innovation on board is the panoramic sunroof with smart glass – here, the glass layers can be electronically switched to be either opaque or clear. The Wellness In-Car app is also completely new. This allows various vehicle functions to be adjusted by means of three preconfigured programmes (Fresh Up, Calm Down and Power Break) which can help to enhance wellbeing during the journey or breaks. Depending on the vehicle equipment, the app accesses the background lighting, sound, air conditioning, smart glass function , seat air conditioning and seat massage as well as the ID.LIGHT and the infotainment screen.

The specified fuel consumption and emission data are determined in accordance with the measurement procedures prescribed by law. 1 January 2022, the WLTP test cycle completely replaced the NEDC test cycle and therefore no NEDC values are available for new type approved vehicles after that date.

This information does not refer to a single vehicle and is not part of the offer but is only intended for comparison between different types of vehicles. Additional equipment and accessories (additional components, tyre formats, etc.) can alter relevant vehicle parameters such as weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics, affecting the vehicle's fuel consumption, power consumption, CO 2 emissions and driving performance values in addition to weather and traffic conditions and individual driving behavior.

Due to more realistic testing conditions, fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions measured according to WLTP will in many cases be higher than the values measured according to NEDC. As a result, the taxation of vehicles may change accordingly as of 1 September 2018. For further information on the differences between WLTP and NEDC, please visit www.volkswagen.de/wltp .

VW ID.3 GTX and ID.7 GTX Tourer debut as a hot hatch and wagon for Europe

These are some sweet-looking performance evs.

id tour vw

It’ll come as no surprise that Europe is once again enjoying some unique European cars that the U.S. sadly won’t. Today, those two pieces of forbidden fruit are the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX and ID.7 GTX Tourer. In case you weren’t familiar, “GTX” means performance for VW ’s EVs, so we’ve got one hot hatch and one hot wagon to cover.

Starting with the ID.3 GTX (that you’ll see in the gallery at the top of this post), it’s essentially a spicier version of the ID.3 electric hatchback on sale in Europe today. Power is goosed up to 282 horsepower, or 322 horsepower if you opt for the “Performance” model of the GTX. That power is doled out exclusively to the rear wheels, resulting in a rear-drive hot hatchback that can do 0-62 mph in just 5.6 seconds. We like the sound of that.

VW also tosses in a unique suspension with its DCC adaptive dampers; the battery pack is slightly larger for more range than the base ID.3, and it gets a unique front fascia, glossy black trim aplenty and 20-inch wheels to set it apart on the road. Inside, the GTX adds high-bolstered sport seats, red trim and stitching all over and a model-specific steering wheel.

The all-electric Volkswagen ID.7 GTX Tourer

Moving on to the wagon, this ID.7 GTX Tourer ups the ante on the electric long roof over and above the standard ID.7 Tourer . It features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain good enough for 335 horsepower, making it the most powerful wagon VW’s ever produced, narrowly beating out the slick Arteon R Shooting Brake for the crown.

Design changes include a GTX-specific front bumper and honeycomb grille along with black-painted accents everywhere and unique light graphics. You get special 20-inch wheels, GTX-specific seats and steering wheel. Red accents similar to those found in the ID.3 GTX can be seen throughout the cabin of the ID.7 version, too.

Volkswagen says these two GTX models will be launching in Europe soon, but don’t expect either to make it stateside. It’s too bad, because we could definitely use some affordable hatchback and wagon options in the performance EV space.

VW and Porsche’s electric car sales dipped, but the new Macan EV and ID.4 spark hope

Avatar for Peter Johnson

Volkswagen Group, including Porsche , saw EV sales dip in the first three months of the year as the company prepares to launch new electric models. With the new VW ID.4 and upcoming Porsche Macan EV rolling out in 2024, Volkswagen is already seeing things turn around.

Volkswagen EV sales dip in Q1 with new models coming

Although overall VW Group deliveries were up 3% through the first three months of 2024, sales of electric cars fell in the quarter.

Volkswagen delivered 136,400 electric cars in Q1 2024 , down 3% compared to last year. Despite solid growth in China (+91% YOY), its second-largest market, it wasn’t enough to offset weaker sales in Europe (-24%) and the US (-16%).

The Group’s top-selling models included the VW ID.4/ID.5 (34,600), ID.3 (26,100), Audi Q4 e-tron (22,800), Skoda Enyaq (14,000), Audi Q8 e-tron (9,600), and VW ID.Buzz (7,000).

Meanwhile, VW said new orders in Western Europe, its largest market, are more than double (+154%) that of last year at around 160,000.

Hildegard Wortmannm, who oversees VW Group’s sales, said, “The higher order intake for our all-electric models in Europe makes us confident that we will grow in this segment both in our home region and worldwide over the year as a whole.”

VW-sales

Volkswagen significantly improved the 2024 ID.4 with the bigger battery (82 kWh) version, gaining more power and efficiency ( read our full review here ).

The Group is also gearing up for big EV launches in the ID.7 Tourer , ID.7 Buzz long wheelbase, Cupra Tavascan, Audi Q6 e-tron, and Porsche Macan EV this year.

Volkswagen-ID.7-GTX-Tourer

Porsche announced that deliveries of its sole EV, the Taycan, fell by 54% in Q1, with the extensively updated 2025 model rolling out. The 2025 Porsche Taycan is better in every way, with more range, better performance, and faster charging. Porsche said deliveries will begin this month.

Porsche-2025-Taycan

The luxury brand also revealed its long-awaited fully electric Macan EV in January. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said the all-electric Macan received over 10,000 orders . And that was in early March. Porsche will begin Macan EV deliveries in the second half of the year.

Electrek’s Take

Top comment by leo.

New ID4 is great and I was ready to pull the trigger, but the price increases over the 2023 is a misstep in a time when high rates are already dragging on the EV market. It's not a huge jump (+$2500 in Canada for most trims), but it comes on top of an increase in 2023 along with taking out equipment, so while the ID4 was a no-brainer at $50k CAD for the AWD in 2021 when I first put down a deposit, it's a lot harder to justify at $60k when the competition has improved and come down in price.

I think they will have very slow sales at the new prices and will have to reverse course.

Rival BMW outpaced Volkswagen in Q1 electric sales. BMW reported BMW, MINI, and Rolls Royce EV deliveries were up 28% in Q1 , with 82,700 models handed over.

BMW reached a milestone after hitting the one million EV delivery mark. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz Group EV sales were down 9% in the first three months of 2024, with 50,500 electric car sales.

Despite being outpaced by BMW, Volkswagen believes new (and significantly updated) EV models will turn things around this year.

Will new EVs help boost VW electric car sales in 2024? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

The Camo’s Off: An Insider Look at the VW ID. Buzz

June 14, 2022

Back in the 60s, the Volkswagen bus was an iconic piece of pop culture: Along with bell bottom jeans and psychedelic guitar solos, the decade would be unimaginable without the vehicle ’s distinctive design .

Now, the camo’s off and people young and old are abuzz with the return of this legend in EV form—the ID. Buzz . This fun, free-spirited vehicle combines the adventurous nature of its predecessor with the cutting-edge technology and engineering of today. And for all the new and exciting design elements the ID. Buzz is quickly becoming known for, it also delivers when it comes to its less obvious features .

From Easter eggs to its eco-conscious interior, here’s an inside look at the European model ID. Buzz and details you might have missed in your first look:

The camo-wrapped ID. Buzz on the road

Sustainable Treasures from Battery to Bonnet

As part of the VW EV lineup, the ID. Buzz features an efficient, electric motor that does not produce direct emissions under its vibrantly colored exterior. The electric motor generates an impressive 201 horsepower and 229 foot-pound of torque. Also, with a drag coefficient of just 0.285, the ID. Buzz helps drivers to get the most out of every charge.

But it doesn’t stop there. Inside, the European model ’s seat coverings incorporate recycled materials made in part from diverted ocean-bound plastic. The proprietary SEAQUAL ®  YARN used on the van’s seats is made of 90% recycled PET bottles and 10% marine plastic.

Design Easter Eggs Enthusiasts Are Loving

Designed for comfort and convenience , the ID. Buzz is a state-of-the-art vehicle whose interior space can be configured in ways that support the needs of every driver. But what truly sets the vehicle apart is the same whimsy that helped the original bus galvanize the counterculture—this time in the form of some cleverly placed Easter eggs.

First is the group of winking smiley faces on each front door handle alcove. They serve a functional purpose in covering the screw to detach the door panel but are also designed to make your day just a little better. Next, cute zooming silhouettes of the ID. Buzz are etched into the upholstery throughout the van, including in the trunk. There’s also an ice scraper and bottle opener that can be found in the removable center console. Finally, to showcase the bus’s rain protection systems, the vehicle features a mini umbrella decal on the bottom of the side window shielding an ID. Buzz silhouette from the elements.

Stitched bus inside the Volkswagen ID. Buzz.

In bringing back the bus, VW is inspired by the past, but focused firmly on the future. So, as the buzz about the ID. Buzz continues to build, look for further updates , sneak peaks, and insights into a vehicle that promises to shift the energy of a new generation.

Family Fun or Cargo Van? Customize Your VW ID.Buzz GTX Interior

T he GTX range is now wider after revealing a model that was known to be coming for over a year. The Volkswagen ID.Buzz is now part of the German manufacturer's family of high-performance electric cars. Due to its "sporty" version status, technical data on power, performance and battery took precedence over anything else.

However, it is still the revival of the old van, so what is found inside is no less important. I will focus on three variables here: wheelbase, number of seats and cargo volume. Let's see how flexible it is.

With maximums of 5, 6 and 7 seats

It all starts with the two wheelbase options that this GTX will come out of the factory with. With the basic wheelbase, the ID.Buzz GTX can be limited to two rows with three seats in the back in 60/40 proportions or it can also offer a third row. In this case, the configuration is 2/2/2, meaning that both the middle and rear rows have individual seats.

The extended wheelbase offers all of this same configuration, but adds the chance to increase the maximum capacity to seven seats. To do this, it replaces the two individual seat layout in the second row and places a three-seat bench.

Regarding the second row, these seats can be moved forward and backward with different margins depending on the wheelbase. With the standard wheelbase, this longitudinal displacement is up to 150 mm, which increases to 200 mm with the stretched wheelbase.

Cargo volume according to seat configuration

With the seat configuration detailed, let's move on to the cargo volume. The lowest maximum is signed by the GTX with seven seats. In this case, the trunk space is 306 liters.

When the vehicle has up to five seats and the basic wheelbase, the maximum volume with the rear backrests in position is 1,121 liters. If the second row backrests are folded down, the space offers a maximum of 2,123 liters with cargo up to the top of the front backrests.

If we are talking about the extended wheelbase, and always keeping in mind the maximum capacity of five seats, the basic volume increases to 1,340 liters. If the second row is folded down, the figure goes to 2,469 liters.

Ideal for the three-row seating options is the Multiflex board that this model announces. It is a second level of cargo that is mounted on top of the folded seats to create a flat cargo surface.

Which of all these interior options of this Volkswagen would be most useful to you?
