So, I did my research, found out about the 20 strongest crates, and slimmed down the list to the top 7.

I’m 200% confident that you’ll love what I discovered.

7 Best Heavy-Duty Dog Escape-Proof Dog Crates

Impact is a recognized brand for creating resilient dog crates and only crates.

Their high anxiety crate well emphasizes the superiority of that specialization.

Let’s see why it is the best.

For starters, it is very thoughtfully engineered with strong 100% aluminum. It’s not even just regular aluminum; it’s over 62% thicker.

That’s merely the first telltale sign of a resilient crate that can safely contain a strong dog.

Impact High Anxiety Crate

With a maximum weight of 79 lbs and dimensions 48.5L x 32.5W x 35.87H in inches for the largest size, this beast of a crate could comfortably hold a massive Tibetan Mastiff and any similar breed.

This strong crate features a zinc steel paddle latch with a robust mechanism. It’s built to hold large dogs with immense strength. This added layer of security can withstand high-stress horizontal forces.

If that’s the additional layer, what is the primary security layer? The butterfly door latches.

This is a completely escape-proof industrial crate designed to contain the escape-determined dog. That’s why there are not one but four butterfly latches.

These safety buckles are NOT seen in the standard crates, which makes it a little lion cage.

The escape-proof value further increases thanks to the placement of these locks . They are the opening side of the door where the maximum force will be experienced.

That’s why Impact’s high anxiety crate is the ultimate heavy-duty escape-proof crate.

What’s the point of a strong door if there’s a weak body?

Lucky for you, Impact’s design team already saw that coming. The crate’s body is thick enough to discourage even the strongest adult dogs from denting it. It’s a virtually indestructible dog crate.

But even with this entire espace-proof design details, the dog gets enough ventilation and light from the ventilation holes.

You’d initially worry if these holes are big enough for nails to go through — you know how that might make the dogs feel as if they could tear through the plate. However, they are just 0.05 inched and perfectly safe.

So far, we have resilient construction and several protection mechanisms that make it impossible for even the strongest dogs to escape Impact’s high-anxiety crate.

Is that all? No.

The entire is not only just welded but ALSO riveted together. The material is strong, and all the edges where it usually tends to be weak are extremely strong in this one.

This construction method ensures that the crate remains intact and stable under tremendous pressure. In other words, heavy-duty and escape-proof.

On top of all these features, the crate comes with military-grade handles. Even if you were strong, transporting this crate is much easier with these handles.

Although you presume a wheeled bottom would be better, it would cause accidental movements when your dog tries to escape.

There’s no chance for even the best escape artists.

As I said, the largest available size’s dimensions are 48.5 “L x 32.5 “W x 35.87 “, and it comes in five sizes. You can buy this escape-proof crate in three colors ; I suggest grey or black.

With a lifetime warranty, assembled delivery, and free shipping , this made-in-US escape-proof heavy-duty crate is the BEST in the game, undoubtedly.

We got you covered with our honest impact dog crate review if you want to know more about this dog crate.

If not for Impact’s all-rounder crate, the Gunner G1 would have been the best. So many features make the G1 dependable, and let’s see what they are.

A dog needs a specific sense of discomfort or fear for them to attempt to escape. This can be averted if there’s space with a comfortable shape.

Weighing 72 lb s, the largest size of the four sizes has dimensions 40.25″ (L) x 28″ (W) x 33.25″ (H) / 34.5″ (H) with carry handles.

It’s comfortable and big enough.

Gunner G1 Crate

The G1 heavy-duty crate’s material is high-quality, double-walled rotomolded plastic. Sure, it’s not as strong as Impact’s premium Alumunium, but it’s impressive. For starters, it offers two times more impact protection and a better guard against outside forces.

The crate is 12% cooler than other leading aluminum, and your dog will spend 20% less energy staying warm inside than other single-rotomolded or aluminum kennels — that’s sheer material quality.

The powerful frame system complements this material quality. The door system of the Gunner G1 is made with an aluminum frame.

According to Gunner, the design’s sole purpose is to contain a dog before, during, and after a wreck. That loosely translates that this is a heavy-duty crate by design.

But how does it become escape-proof?

In addition to the body’s strength and the strong door system, the Gunner G1 crate features top AND bottom locks added for extra backup. Quoting them, “Even Houdini couldn’t escape this crate,” I like that way of guaranteeing.

Even if it’s a great heavy-duty dog crate, the accessibility is easier for dog owners thanks to features such as the reversible door . It’s designed to open from either side. The cherry on top is the paddle latch that includes a key-in-the-hole lock.

So, the Gunner G1 is the stopping point for escape artists.

But more features make it valuable.

One such feature is the element-repelling windows . G1 doesn’t have ventilation holes, but these vents are engineered to limit the penetration of seasonal trouble like rain, snow, and sleet.

That’s more comfortable for your dog.

You’ll also notice how the bottom of the crate has drainage patterns. Cleaning up the Gunner G1 is easier, thanks to the removable drainage plug.

Being a fully American-made product, you get a lifetime warranty too .

With super strong carrying handles , built-in tie-down pin s, and a wider base for utmost comfort, there’s no reason for your dog to escape this crate — they’ll love being inside.

Here’s our complete and honest gunner crate review .

It was nice seeing that I could get 15% off the order as long as I submitted my phone number and email — but before I do that, we need to see if Roch Creek’s aluminum crate is worth it .

This is an aluminum crate , a telltale sign of strength. The cuboidal shape helps, and it also looks a bit similar to Impact’s anxiety crate.

The Rock Creek crate comes in four sizes , whose largest size is 48 inches long, 32.25″ wide, with a height of 35″.

It’s a decently heavy crate with a weight of 79 lbs .

Rock Creek ALUMINUM DOG CRATE

If you’re unsure about the right crate size, there’s a step-by-step size guide by Rock Creek.

The tall and buffy door is the first escape-proof feature I want to highlight. It is divided into two sections horizontally from the middle, so there’s no chance of bending the bars.

The door latch is lockable and very strong. So, your furry friend won’t be able to push it and get out.

There are two more butterfly latches on the opening side of the door to discourage your escape artists further from trying to escape.

The internal welded aluminum frame is a unique feature that makes this crate so valuable. Remember that it is present on top of the overall aluminum build. That’s why the company openly positions the product as escape-proof and indestructible.

On top of that, Rock Creek’s crate is the only dog crate with an internal welded frame.

What more can you ask for?

On top of all these heavy-duty escape-proof features, the upper half of the crate’s body has hexagonal ventilation holes . In addition to the ventilation, they provide extra light inside too.

You get ten years of warranty for this Rock Creek crate, and it comes fully assembled. But that makes you question if the assembling price is added to the final price.

Rock Creek crate is another excellent alternative to Impact’s crate, with recessed and easy-to-carry handles, stackable corner guards, and threaded inserts (compatible with seven new accessories).

You can buy this in six colors such as grey, blue, green, pink, yellow, and white.a

It’s an impressive set of features that makes your life and your dog’s lives easier.

If all hope is gone, and you can’t find an Impact crate or any, the best alternative is the ProSelect Empire dog cage.

Let’s see what makes it heavy-duty and escape-proof.

This is a 20-gauge steel cage made using thick steel tubing, paired door latches, and heavy-duty welds.

It comes in two sizes, medium and large, and I believe heavy-duty crates should be able to hold large dogs.

It shouldn’t be that hard with dimensions 41.25″ H x 42.25″ W x 30.75″ L.

ProSelect Empire Crate

Despite the high strength factor, it has two conventional yet strong locks . It’s their placement that makes these locks so unique. These locks are perfectly equidistant from the middle horizontal line, and that’s why they can absorb so much pressure.

In other words, your dog can’t escape this metal cage.

Usually, metal cages like these come with a bottom made of widely spaced bars, which is uncomfortable. After all, discomfort is a significant reason why your dog would want to try and escape the cage.

ProSelect Empire dog cage has a floor grate with closely spaced bars and a removable tray underneath. This makes it super easy to clean.

But remember to be extra careful with the removable tray because you do not want to break it.

With the casters, anyone can effortlessly move the cage around. Although these wheels don’t have locks, you can remove these casters for added stability.

I know there aren’t many special features like the first few crates we discussed. Nonetheless, you can rely on this crate to keep your dog safe.

Next up is Lucky Dog’s Dwell series crate – bronze finish. I’ll call it the Dwell crate to make it easier for both of us. So, what makes the dwell crate so unique?

At first glance, this is a very spacious wire dog crate that comes in four sizes . Out of them, the biggest size has dimensions 48 “x30″ x33”, weighing 39.7 pounds.

I liked the balance between weight and dimensions, as it’s crucial.

But unlike the Impact’s crate, this is not a fully covered crate as it’s a cage. So, if your dog has separation anxiety, you might need to train them to be inside the cage better.

Lucky DogÂŽ Dwell

This wire crate has well-spaced wires , but it’s always better to double-check if your dog is attempting to bend the wires.

Nonetheless, there’s a dependable, secure door with latches that provide peace of mind. The most special design detail must be the door’s sliding nature. It’s so quiet and easy that it’s comfortable for you and your dog.

The rail system makes things easier, and there’s an extra easy-access front door for optimized space. That’s not all; this crate folds down flat , and transporting it is much easier. The only problem is the lack of handles.

You’ll love the patented, easy-snap corner stabilizers that strengthen and prevent collapsing of this durable frame. Why is it durable? It’s rust-resistant by design.

Although you must get beddin g, at least Lucky Dog’s Dwell Seriest crate – the bronze finish is another good alternative. However, Ideally, this cage is not for heavy and stronger dogs.

The company lets you buy it in either a stylish brass finish or bronze finis h, bringing more personalization to the product.

A resilient metal cage — that’s the best way to introduce Confote’s escape-proof heavy-duty dog crates.

But what makes it escape-proof and heavy-duty?

The starting factor is the material; it’s fully stainless stee l and, thus, incredibly resilient and robust.

Similar to the last one, this has a grated floor , and you need bedding to provide better comfort.

But there’s a plus point; this is the biggest dog case to use encrypted thick steel pope(0.5mm) at the bottom .

These aren’t circular , so standing on their paws is more comfortable.

Confote Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Dog Crate

And there’s no way your dog can dig through that.

Just as strong as the bottom, the bars surrounding it are also equally strong. With ideal distance, and that’s why they can’t bend or squeeze through.

You’ll also love the double-door design. The Confote’s cage features a front door for your pet to go in and out. But the door on the top is most suitable for interacting with the dog ensuring one factor: not letting them escape the cage.

Confote has 360-degree rotatable and lockable casters too.

This cage has a tray bottom which makes it extra easy to clean food and excrement. As always, take great care of this tray, as it contains a lot of value and can’t be easily replaced.

Assembling this crate is claimed to be easy as it only takes 3-5 minutes . Don’t worry, all the locks are pre-assembled , and the Confote team is ready to assist you just in case.

In conclusion, the Confote stainless steel metal cage is another reliable alternative.

I love how Smonter’s marketing strategy clearly indicates their priorities: “Don’t let pets become troubled.”

Essentially, that’s exactly what every dog parent looking for an escape-proof crate wants.

There are some advantages to Smonter pinpoints on why it should be chosen.

It’s not on the Impact-crate-supremacy level, but it’s good enough.

For starters, the crate is made out of a well-welded steel bar. The product features a sturdy metal frame that contains even the most aggressive canines from escaping by damaging the bars.

SMONTER Heavy Duty Dog Crate

The cherry on top is the non-toxic surface finish . Your furry friends will chew on the bars; there’s no long-term risk. That’s how it should be.

Or, no chewing at all, like the Impact or Gunner G1.

Smonter ensures an escape-proof design with the special y-pattern at the top . This pattern is specifically chosen to prevent the dog’s mouth from sticking out, which might encourage them to misbehave. Additionally, it’s bite-proof as well.

Regardless of the resilient design, this is still a cage. If your dog has separation anxiety, it might trigger dogs and force them to try and escape.

This cage also features a strong lock with a single-door design . Its mid-placement ensures the pressure is ideally mitigated. But it would have been better to have a couple of more locks.

Even with a grate–bottom , you still get a tray, so it’s easier to clean.

Did I mention the casters? Smonter’s heavy-duty escape-proof cage also has 360 degrees rotatable wheels/casters. Since these can be locked, you don’t have to worry about accidental movement.

It’s a good alternative and can be the best last resort for a reliable escape-proof heavy-duty dog crate.

Now that we’re done with the heavy-duty dog crate list, let me brief the buying guide for escape-proof & heavy-duty dog crates.

Heavy duty crates stacked

There are several factors and tips to consider, but the following points cover all of them.

  • Avoid getting standard & conventional crates
  • Prioritize the walled crates for further discouraged escape attempts
  • Get a crate with many locks with ideal placements
  • It’s best to have a built-in cleaning convenience
  • Avoid getting a too-big or (obviously) too-small size of a crate
  • Do not buy any poorly ventilated crates
  • The high brand value matters in terms of higher quality
  • The holes/spacing of metal bars should not be dangerous to your dog
  • Standard wire crates should NOT be used for heavy-duty needs
  • Condition-specific crates for a dog suffers from separation anxiety are great
  • Prioritize crates with single doors
  • Welded is better than bolted, and both together are so much better
  • Carrying handles must be there
  • Pay attention to the overall interior shape

With that covered, let’s look at the list.

When pet parents are looking for an escape-proof dog crate, it doesn’t mean they want to imprison their dogs.

Although you’ll have your own reasons, here are ten solid reasons to invest in escape-proof heavy-duty dog crates.

  • Provides a secure and safe living space for your dog
  • Prevents your dog from injuring themselves or destroying your home while you’re away
  • Helps with potty training and managing behavior
  • Increases to tame aggressive dogs faster
  • Gives you peace of mind when you’re away from home
  • Easier to tame the more robust dogs with training
  • Can be used for travel or outdoor activities
  • Can help reduce anxiety and stress in your dog
  • A tough crate lasts longer compared to any typical dog’s crate
  • Helps prevent bad habits from developing, such as chewing or excessive barking
  • Safeguard your dog from external factors such as snow, rain, temperature, etc

It is essential to measure your dog accurately to ensure that they have enough space.

To measure your dog, follow these simple steps:

  • Step 1: measure the length of your dog from the tip of its nose to the base of its tail
  • Step 2: measure the height of your dog from the floor to the top of its head or ears, depending on which is the highest
  • Step 3: measure the width of your dog from shoulder to shoulder
  • Step 4: add a few inches to each measurement to ensure your dog has enough space to move around comfortably.

triple dog crate on the floor

You should note that this is a very generalized approach. Some crate companies have their own measurement methods, which are easily accessible via hyperlinks on product pages.

Although there can be several deviations, below are some of the most common escape proof & heavy-duty crates in the market.

  • The Metal heavy-duty dog crates: made of heavy-duty steel, these crates are durable and can withstand even the most persistent chewers and escape artists. Any wire crate also belongs in this category.
  • The Aluminum heavy-duty crates: lightweight and durable, aluminum dog crates are perfect for travel and outdoor activities. The majority of crates are made from aluminum due to superior durability.
  • The Plastic heavy-duty crates : plastic crates are ideal for dogs that suffer from anxiety and need a quieter and enclosed space.
  • The Wooden heavy-duty cratess: these crates blend in with your home decor and provide your dog with a comfortable, safe space.

Heavy duty crates stacked on a road

Sometimes, all it takes is having that extra wisdom, and that’s why I want to share that with you.

  • You can always reinforce weak points by reinforcing the walls with zip ties in the corners or even drilling holes in the crate holes and fixing them.
  • Using extra padlocks if needed is never a wrong choice, not when you have heavy and strong dogs.
  • Remember that placement of the crate plays a big role, too; choose an area safe and comfortable for your dog.
  • Double-check the locks before you walk away since you don’t want to make that mistake with escape-proof and heavy-duty dog crates.
  • It’s always mindful of using comfy bedding and blankets long-term, lowering the dog’s need to damage the crate.
  • Cleaning the crate on time is imperative.
  • Removing your dog’s collar and harness before they get inside the crate is important as that’ll prevent when from getting caught on the crate bars.
  • Remember never to hard-fix your crate anywhere, as almost all of these crates are travel friendly.

Although there are many more tips, I’m sure this gives you a clear idea.

Maybe you might like to convert your existing crate escape-proof even if you’re buying a brand new one. Whatever the reason it was, here are three sure-shot things to do.

  • Use a padlock or carabiner to secure the crate door
  • Cover the crate with a blanket or sheet to prevent your dog from seeing outside
  • Use a bungee cord to secure the crate to a stationary object

I could tell you more, but I can’t guarantee how long it’ll last.

A dog is outside a Heavy duty crate

It could be because you’re tired of seeing your dog always escape your crate that you want an escape-proof crate. But how do dogs usually escape typical dog crates ?

Allow me to answer that.

They can always chew or bend the crate bars. This usually happens when the bar spacing is considerably high.

But it can be as simple as pushing the door open with enough force.

The reason for that could be that one lock is not enough; that’s why the best heavy-duty & inescapable crates have multiple secondary locks.

You’d be surprised to hear that some dogs could dig under the crate or even squeeze through the gaps.

If your dog escapes the crate by forcing apart the crate seams, it’s better to use metal carabiners to reinforce these places.

None of these risks would occur if you chose a dependable, escape-proof, heavy-duty dog crate.

Remember that this is not your average crate. So, training your dog takes effort and more strategic approaches.

Here are 5 of the best tips to do it like a pro.

  • You MUST make the crate a positive experience
  • Gradually increase the door shut time when they’re inside
  • Ignore attention-seeking behavior that’ll get worse if you give them attention
  • AVOID punishments at all times
  • Observe your dog’s behavior when inside and act accordingly

I’m sure there are more sophisticated tips, but you can definitely work with these.

If a dog parent requires escape-proof and heavy-duty qualities simultaneously, it’s a serious issue to resolve. On such occasions, you should not compromise the solution’s quality.

But upon evaluation, Impact’s high anxiety crate comes with ZERO quality comprises — it’s the ultimate heavy-duty and escape-proof dog crate. It ticks ALL the boxes and more.

I hope you make that one-time sensible investment and give the best life your best friend deserves.

See you in another review!

Dog crates are an essential part of training your pet and keeping her safe and secure when you’re away. But not all crates are created equal—if you have a large, anxious or destructive dog, you may have experienced first-hand what can happen when a flimsy crate meets its match. Heavy Duty Dog Crate Buyer’s Guide

Happy dog owner at home

When to Use a Heavy Duty Dog Crate

A heavy duty crate is a good choice for many situations. And while they may be an obvious choice for large dogs, even smaller-sized dogs can benefit from a strong, sturdy crate.

A significant benefit for every type of dog is that heavy duty crates can be more long-lasting than flimsier plastic crates, and those made with rust-, scratch- and dent-proof materials can be used for years to come. Heavy duty crates are essential for dogs who are destructive chewers, have separation anxiety , tend to escape, have a lot of energy or are simply large. They not only keep your pet safe while she’s contained, but you’ll never have to worry about coming home to a dog who’s escaped her enclosure and begun to feast on the couch.

Crates aren’t just a good idea to protect your home and keep your dog safe from ingesting potentially dangerous items; they can also be beneficia l for training and your dog’s overall comfort and happiness. When introduced properly, a crate can become a dog’s haven and aid in potty training your pet. It protects them when you aren’t home and gives them a calm place to nap when you are. When traveling, it gives her a piece of home to help her relax.

Most dogs can benefit from heavy duty crates, but if you have a small, calm dog, a heavy duty crate may not be worth the extra expense. Most dogs prefer crates that feel cave-like, so choosing a too-large crate—like many heavy duty crates are—may not provide the comfort a smaller dog craves.

What to Look for in a Heavy Duty Dog Crate

Woman looking for dog crate on laptop

The best heavy duty dog crate for you depends on your needs. Generally, steel and similar heavy materials are ideal for most dogs due to their safety profile (plastic and other materials may be chewed and ingested). Crates with thick bars may be preferable for dogs with a history of chewing and destroying crates with thinner frames. Sturdy latches and locks are a must if your dog finds ways to escape her crate—look for crates with multiple latches that are inaccessible to your dog’s reach.

You should also consider how you’ll be using the crate. If you plan to travel with your pup , a crate that can be broken down and reassembled quickly is important. Remember that these crates may not be strong enough for large dogs that have bent or broken crates in the past, so carefully evaluate what makes the most sense for your situation and needs.

Bigger dogs may need heavier crates, and a crate without a bottom tray that the dog can reach might be necessary, too. While these trays make cleaning easy, most are made of plastic that dogs with strong jaws can still chew. You can remove them entirely if your dog isn’t prone to accidents.

Choosing a crate large enough for your dog is a must. In general, your dog should have enough room to stand, turn around and lay down comfortably. To properly potty train puppies , you’ll want to avoid a crate that’s too big. Luckily, many crates come with an accessory that allows you to increase the crate area as your puppy grows gradually, so pick out a crate that matches the potential size of your dog when she’s fully grown.

When it comes to how much you can expect to pay, know that costs vary widely depending on the size of the crate. While you can find a solid, heavy duty crate for under $100 for most dogs, if you have a giant-sized breed or need something significantly stronger, prices can soar to over $200. If cost is an issue, consider looking for used crates that fit your needs.

Tips for Using a Heavy Duty Dog Crate

Cut up hot dog for dog treat

If your dog is new to crate training, a proper introduction is critical to making the crate something your dog loves. Associating the crate with your pet’s favorite treat or toy is a great start. The crate should always be used as a positive tool—never use the crate as punishment.

Consider some accessories to make the crate an enjoyable place to be. A breathable crate cover can help your dog feel safe and secure by recreating a den-like atmosphere. A cozy bed or blanket adds comfort. Be careful about leaving items in the crate if your dog tends to destroy them, and only leave chewable items in the crate when you can supervise your pet. Never leave your dog’s harness or collar on, as these can be caught on the crate and injure your pet.

For adult dogs, eight hours is the general suggested maximum time dogs should stay in a crate (about as long as a typical work day, although adding in a quick lunchtime walk is a good idea). Young puppies will need potty breaks often—generally, puppies under 6 months shouldn’t be crated for longer than 4 hours at a time (but remember that for some puppies, even a few hours may be too long without an accident). While your dog can spend the entire night in her crate, remember that most puppies will need bathroom breaks at night, depending on their age and size.

While crates are a wonderful tool , they should never be used as a solution for issues that require a specialist—if your dog is acting out, it’s important to rule out boredom, anxiety and even health issues. And while a crate can serve as a safe place for dogs to stay alone if they have separation anxiety, it isn’t a solution—this issue should be tackled with the help of a behaviorist and proper training.

With the help of a heavy duty crate, you can create a relaxing, safe place for your dog to retreat to. And with a strong and secure crate, you can relax, too, knowing your dog is protected even when you’re away.

Frisco Ultimate Heavy Duty Steel Metal Single Door Dog Crate

Frisco ultimate heavy duty steel metal single door dog crate review.

If you have a dog who is determined to escape, the Frisco Ultimate Heavy Duty Steel Metal Single Door Dog Crate could be the solution for you.

Constructed with 22-gauge steel and 1/2-inch diameter steel tubing, this crate is designed to stand up to the strongest of dogs. There are 2 locks for security and they’re cleverly placed so your dog can’t access them from the inside.

I loved that this crate had welding at all the stress points and was powder coated so it really stands up to wear over time.

A slide-out metal tray makes cleaning up any accidents easy. Although this crate is very heavy, there are wheels on the bottom so you can move it around when needed.

  • Most owners found that this crate kept their escape artist dogs secure, with some owners saying it was indestructible
  • Many owners of both medium and large dogs found this crate had enough room for their dog (see also ' How Much Room Should A Dog Have In A Crate? ')
  • Many said it was easy to assemble especially with tools and another person on hand
  • Owners said the wheels made the crate easy to move despite it being heavy
  • Most owners felt this crate was high-quality and worth the investment
  • The slatted floor can be uncomfortable with many owners having to add another layer on the bottom of the crate

ProSelect Empire Single Door Steel Dog Crate

Proselect empire single door steel dog crate review.

The ProSelect Empire Single Door Steel Dog Crate is 1 of the best escape-proof dog crates, made to be extremely strong for dogs who are real Houdini’s.

This crate is constructed with half-inch thick, 20-gauge steel, and is welded at stress points to ensure it’s completely secure. Dual locks are provided on 1 door, which after inspection I felt were positioned well out of the dog’s reach to enhance security even further.

This crate is suitable for medium and large breeds. While it’s on the higher end of the price range, if your dog is a real escape artist, in my opinion, it’s well worth the investment.

  • Many owners found that the crate was escape-proof, even when their dogs had escaped from all other crates they’d tried previously
  • Despite the higher price generally, people felt it was worth the investment
  • Great for dogs who are big, strong, and destructive
  • Made with quality, durable materials
  • Several owners found it gave them peace of mind that their dog was safe when left alone
  • Some owners found that the crate was hard to put together and that the assembly instructions were a bit confusing
  • Can be difficult to move around due to its heavy construction
  • Some owners felt the crate didn’t stand to wear as well as they hoped
  • Some very anxious, determined dogs were able to figure out the latch mechanism

Frisco Ultimate Foldable & Stackable Heavy Duty Metal Dog Crate

Frisco ultimate foldable & stackable heavy duty metal dog crate review.

The Frisco Ultimate Foldable & Stackable Heavy Duty Metal Dog Crate is one of the best escape-proof crates, made with strong steel and featuring dual locks to keep your dog safely enclosed.

If you buy 2 of these crates you can stack them to save space. This is great for multi-dog households or even in professional settings.

I loved that, unlike many other heavy-duty crates, this one can be folded down for storage when needed. This crate is very strong and extremely heavy, so keep this in mind for assembly. There are wheels on the bottom of the crate so you can move it around with ease once assembled.

It comes in a range of sizes to suit medium to giant breeds. Although this crate comes at a high price point, I feel it’s well worth the investment if you have an escape artist dog!

  • Most owners said the crate was extremely secure, strong, and durable
  • Many found that the crate was easy to put together with 2 people
  • Wheels make the crate easy to move which owners found convenient
  • Owners of multiple dogs loved that this crate was stackable
  • Folds up when not in use which many owners found handy
  • May need to add a layer to the bottom for the dog’s comfort
  • Higher price point than some other crates

Frisco Heavy Duty Fold & Carry Single Door Collapsible Wire Dog Crate

frisco-heavy-duty-fold-carry-single-door-collapsible-wire-dog-crate

Frisco Heavy Duty Fold & Carry Single Door Collapsible Wire Dog Crate review

  • Best overall
  • Folds down for portability

The Frisco Heavy Duty Fold & Carry Single Door Collapsible Wire Dog Crate is the best heavy-duty dog cage if you have a mischievous dog but still need portability.

The crate folds down, yet is still strong, made from thicker, heavier steel wiring than other Frisco crates.

Larger models have dual locks, providing extra security for bigger, stronger dogs. This dog’s crate comes in multiple sizes, suitable for all breeds (which is also handy if you have a multi-dog household like me).

A very affordable price makes this crate excellent value for money.

  • Excellent value for money given all the crate’s features
  • Most owners felt the crate was of great quality and made from durable materials
  • Easy to fold down and reassemble, even for 1 person
  • Great for keeping your dog safe during car travel
  • Many owners found this crate kept their dogs safely contained while they were out, giving them peace of mind
  • Heavier than other foldable crates due to the sturdy material
  • Some owners found it wasn’t heavy-duty enough for their dogs, and that they escaped from the crate
  • May not be suitable for dogs with a powerful bite who are prone to chewing a lot
  • Some felt it was harder to assemble than they expected
  • Some found the crate didn’t wear as well over time as they had hoped

Frisco Heavy Duty Enhanced Lock Double Door Fold & Carry Wire Dog Crate & Mat Kit

frisco-heavy-duty-enhanced-lock-double-door-fold-carry-wire-dog-crate-mat-kit

Frisco Heavy Duty Enhanced Lock Double Door Fold & Carry Wire Dog Crate & Mat Kit review

  • Best for secure locking
  • Enhanced lock technology
  • Sturdy metal wire

If your dog is a genius at undoing latches, then the Frisco Heavy Duty Enhanced Lock Double Door Fold & Carry Wire Dog Crate & Mat Kit is a fantastic choice.

The crate features enhanced lock technology that allows you to lock 3 strong locks with just 1 step (I often find it a hassle to double-check multiple locks, so I found this very handy). Made from coated metal, this crate is sturdy and secure.

The crate folds down for portability, and this kit even comes with a comfy crate mat for your pal. There are 3 sizes available, to suit medium, large, and giant breeds. It comes at a very reasonable price.

  • Most owners found this crate easy to assemble
  • Sturdy materials and very secure for most dogs, keeping them safely contained
  • Portability makes it more convenient for travel than some other escape-proof crates
  • The latch system is handy and easy to use, saving time and giving peace of mind
  • Many people felt the purchase was a fantastic value
  • Some owners found that real escape artists were still able to get out of this crate
  • Some found that the mat which comes with this kit wasn’t as comfortable or sturdy as they expected
  • The crate makes some noise if your dog is moving around a lot, which can be annoying at night
  • Heavier than other foldable crates due to the sturdy materials

Petmate Vari Dog & Cat Kennel

petmate-vari-dog-kennel

Petmate Vari Dog & Cat Kennel review

  • Best for travel
  • Heavy-duty plastic construction
  • Meets travel requirements

The Petmate Vari Dog & Cat Kennel provides a great, secure option for traveling. This crate is made from heavy-duty plastic with a strong wire door.

There are 4 sizes available, suitable for small, medium, and large breeds. The crates get stronger as they increase in size to stand up to big, strong dogs.

The crate meets USDA and IATA requirements for pet transportation, and smaller sizes feature a carry handle, which in my experience is a convenient feature for portability.

At a great low price, this crate is value for money if you travel regularly.

  • Secure and safe for airline travel, with owners finding it met even strict airline restrictions
  • Easy to assemble with no tools required and easy-to-follow instructions
  • Easy to transport when not in use
  • Owners found it was helpful for car travel, keeping their dog safe and comfortable with enough ventilation
  • Good value for money considering the quality, ease of cleaning, and portability
  • Some owners found the size description misleading, with the crate being smaller than expected for their large dog
  • No carry handle on larger sizes, which some owners found inconvenient
  • Some owners found that the screws were not consistent in size, making assembly more difficult than they expected
  • Not as sturdy as wire crates, which can be a problem for dogs who are bigger and determined to escape

HIWOKK Heavy Duty Indestructible Dog Crate Steel Escape Proof Dog

best-escape-proof-dog-crate HIWOKK Heavy Duty Indestructible Dog Crate Steel Escape Proof Dog

HIWOKK Heavy Duty Indestructible Dog Crate Steel Escape Proof Dog review

  • A best 2-door escape-proof crate
  • Side and top door access
  • Strong steel construction

The HIWOKK Heavy Duty Indestructible Dog Crate Steel Escape Proof Dog is a fantastic choice for owners of medium to large dogs who are prone to escaping.

Made from strong,  reinforced 0.5-inch diameter corrosion-resistant steel this crate is designed to last over time.

I liked that this crate had 2 doors, allowing access from both the side and top. This is really handy and isn’t seen on many heavy-duty crates. Double-bolted locks on both doors ensure security.

The bottom of the crate is a floor grate over a plastic removable tray which is very easy to clean. However, this does mean you may need to add in a bed or padding for your dog’s comfort.

Overall, I feel this crate comes at a reasonable price and is a great value.

  • Many owners found this crate easy to assemble, especially with 2 people
  • Most owners said this crate was highly heavy-duty and secure
  • Wheels ensure the crate is easy to move around the home when needed
  • Owners generally felt this crate was high-quality and had a reasonable price
  • Two doors allow easy access to feed or interact with your dog while they’re in the crate
  • Extra padding may be needed for the dog’s comfort
  • When assembled can be too wide to get through doors

Things to Look for in an Escape-Proof Dog Crate

In your search for the best escape-proof dog crate, there are a few things you should keep an eye out for:

Strong and Sturdy High-Quality Materials

Of course, the main thing you need to ensure a crate is completely escape-proof, strong and sturdy, high-quality materials that are going to stand up to potential chewing and digging.

Look for heavy-duty plastic or metal dog crates , depending on how strong your pup is.

If your dog is a real escape artist, look for crates without weak points (such as the ability to fold). Crates that state they have reinforcement at stress points provide extra security.

Secure Locks

The second most important aspect is a secure lock. How secure you need the lock to be will depend on how clever your dog is at undoing latches. Some crates will offer dual locks for extra security.

Always look for crates that state that the locks are positioned well out of reach for your dog. Proselect empire dog cage is a good example of this.

If you’re looking for an even more secure option, look for locks with key access, such as the Midwest iCrate or the IRIS Wire Pet Playpen. These types of locks will make sure that your pup is safe and secure inside its crate.

Correct Size for Your Dog

It’s always crucial to choose a crate that is the right size for your dog, for their safety and comfort. Bigger is not better, as this can make your pup more likely to escape and also mean they feel less safe.

Your dog should be able to stand up, stretch out, and turn around comfortably in their crate. They should never be able to wander around inside their crate.

Ventilation

All crates should have good ventilation. The wire crate has excellent ventilation. If you choose a plastic crate, ensure it has ventilation holes to allow good airflow.

Comfort for Your Dog

The right size crate and good ventilation help to keep your dog comfortable . Most crates can be made more comfortable by adding blankets, bedding, and other comfort items.

If your dog is particularly destructive, be careful about which items you leave in their crate with them.

Ease of Cleaning

Crates that are easy to clean make your life easier and are more hygienic for your dog. Plastic crates typically wipe down easily. Wire crates often have removable plastic bottoms that make cleaning a breeze.

Number of Doors

When you’re looking for an escape-proof crate, fewer doors are typically better as doors present a weak point in the crate.

It’s also easy to forget to lock more than 1 door. Most escape-proof crates will have 2 doors at the most.

Why Some Dogs Try to Escape from Their Crate

Buying a heavy-duty dog crate can certainly help to keep your dog safely confined, but it’s critical you figure out why your dog is trying to escape from their crate in the first place.

There are a few common reasons dogs try to escape their crate :

  • Boredom: Often it’s simply a case of boredom, particularly for more active breeds. It’s crucial you ensure your dog is getting enough exercise for their breed, as well as enough mental stimulation.
  • Their crate isn’t comfortable: Some dogs may not be comfortable in their crate. Ensure you make it a cozy, comfy space by adding blankets, a bed, water, and crate-safe toys and treats.

Basic Tips to Stop the Urge to Escape

We mentioned going back to the basics and crate training your pup to stop the urge to escape. So how do you do that? We’ll go over some basic tips:

  • Never force your dog into the crate. Encourage them to go in with lots of praise and treats.
  • Gradually build up time left in the crate, starting with a few minutes, and moving on from there once your dog feels comfortable.
  • Leave the crate open when you’re home to encourage them to use it by choice.
  • Exercise your pup before you leave them alone. This will tire them out, ensure they’ve had enough stimulation, and make them feel more settled. They’ll be more likely to sleep when you’re gone.
  • Provide crate-safe toys and treats. This can help to make being in the crate more fun and reduce boredom.
  • Try different crate positions to see where your dog feels most comfortable. Some dogs may prefer somewhere very quiet with little disturbances. Others might prefer to be near a window so they can watch what’s going on outside.

If you’re struggling, there’s lots of great detailed guidance on crate training online. Checking in with your vet or finding a dog trainer can also be helpful.

Crate Safety Advice

Always choose a heavy-duty crate that is the right size and has plenty of ventilation. It’s crucial you crate train your dog before leaving them in a crate.

Escape Proof Dog Crate FAQ

Is it worth investing in an escape-proof crate.

There’s no denying that escape-proof heavy-duty dog crates can be expensive, especially if you need 1 that is very secure. However, yes, they are well worth the investment to keep your dog safe while you’re out of the house.

An escape-proof dog crate can keep your mischievous pup safely confined while you’re away from home, as well as keep your house safe from destruction! With crate training, both you and your pup can relax when you’re out.

How Dogs Typically Escape Standard Crates

To have a good chance at keeping your dog inside his crate, you’ll need to understand how most dogs get out of kennels in the first place.

While there are endless variations on these themes, most dogs use one of the following three methods for springing themselves loose.

1. Chewing on Connectors and other Weak Spots

Many standard wire dog crates use small metal connectors to keep the sides together and the door mounted properly.

Many dogs will simply mangle these relatively flimsy pieces with their mouth, pull them off, and burst through the resulting opening.

2. Manipulating the Latch

If your dog is more brain surgeon than trap-jaw, he may simply futz with the latch mechanism until he figures out how to open the door. Some determined doggos even manage to do so by licking the latch!

While the initial attempts to work a latch often look clumsy and random, dogs often learn how to work latches with remarkable speed after figuring it out and practicing a few times.

3. Brute Force

Many dogs, even relatively small ones, will simply use their muscles and mass to bend apart bars. They may incorporate a bit of mouth-work at times, but dogs will often just force their head between the metal bars (or any other perceived weakness) until they bend them enough to fit their body through.

Dogs may combine some of these techniques as necessary to achieve freedom, and some crates provide them with unique and specific opportunities to try. Don’t forget that your dog has nothing but time, energy and the drive to get out – don’t expect him to give up easily.

Features You Want in an Escape-Proof, Heavy Duty Dog Crate

Lab in metal dog cafe

If you’re faced with a dog that could break out of Fort Knox, you’ll eventually need to consider using a heavy-duty crate, designed specifically for these types of challenging pups.

However, not all crates marketed as “escape-proof” or “heavy-duty” live up to their name. And while no crate is 100% effective, 100% of the time, with 100% of dogs, there are a number of features and characteristics that are usually associated with the most resilient kennels. For example:

Heavy-duty crates should be built from metal . A flimsy sheet of plastic may discourage escape attempts by calm dogs, but those with severe separation anxiety will tear through plastic at mind-blowing speed. Not all metals are completely dog-proof, but most are substantially better options than other materials.

Crates with solid (ventilated) walls are usually the most secure options . While there are a variety of durable crates made with tubular steel or metal wire walls, dogs occasionally manage to escape from these types of walls. By contrast, even the most gifted escape artists are unable to tunnel through solid walls.

Crates that feature a removable pan and wheels provide additional convenience without compromising security . Removable pans make it easier to clean up spills or accidents, and wheels are often very handy, given the weight of most heavy-duty crates.

Good crates never sacrifice ventilation for security . No matter how hard it is to keep your dog inside his crate, you cannot compromise his well-being and comfort. Poorly ventilated crates can become damp and stagnant very quickly, which can foster bacterial proliferation. They’re also plain uncomfortable for your pup and even dangerous, especially for brachycephalic dog breeds .

The best crates rely on latches that are inaccessible to your dog . Many dogs learn to outsmart simple barrel locks, so you’ll want to select a crate that uses latches that are more difficult for your dog to manipulate. Slam latches, which engage automatically when the door is shut, are usually among the most effective in this regard.

Tips and Tricks to Thwart Houdini Dogs

best heavy duty dog crates

Even the best dog crates fail to keep some canines contained, and owners are often required to use a little ingenuity to make their crates truly escape-proof. Some of the best tips and tricks for fortifying your pup’s crate include:

If possible, observe your dog’s escape attempts to see how he is getting out . You may need to hide in another room or use a webcam to do so, as most dogs will wait until their owner is out of sight before breaking free. Once you see how he is escaping, you can concentrate your efforts on reinforcing the weakness he is exploiting.

If your dog is escaping by forcing apart the crate seams, consider using carabiners or some other type of metal hardware to reinforce these places . Never use things through which your dog can chew, such as zip ties, rope or duct tape. Not all metal carabiners and similar connectors are dog-proof, but high-quality products usually are relatively immune to your dog’s jaws.

Providing your dog with a beloved toy can help give him something to do besides perfecting his escape routine . Just be sure that you select a toy that is safe to leave with your unattended pup.

Tire out your pooch before putting him in the crate . Exercise is an important aspect of general dog care, but it can also help prevent escapes. Exercise can drain your dog of the energy necessary to bust out, and it will frequently just encourage him to go to sleep. Be sure to add a brain component, as the best canine enrichment activities put your mutt’s mind to work, too.

Experiment with different crate placements . Sometimes, you can reduce your dog’s desire to escape from his kennel by placing it in a different location. You may find, for example, that by placing him within view of a window, he stops trying to escape as much. You may also find that the opposite – eliminating his view of squirrels and pedestrians – may calm him down more.

I have a 4-year-old GSD that was a rescue with severe anxiety issues I went with the high anxiety crate from Impact crates yes they are expensive but if you consider how many crates you may buy before you realize that your dog can get through all of them plus the cost of vet bills fixing broken teeth

Thanks for sharing, Carrie!

Very good read! I am curious if you know about the High Anxiety dog crate from Impact Dog Crates? Comes with a 10-Year Dog Damage Warranty and there has not been a single escape from this crate. Not to mention it is specifically designed to prevent a dog from harming itself while trying to escape. Would love to get you some more information if you would like!

Hey, Dyllan. We are familiar with Impact Crates, and we’ve recommended them before in our heavy-duty crates article . We think they look pretty good, but they’re really expensive — prohibitively so for many owners. But thanks for sharing and checking out the site!

Hi, I need a bigger cage like 5+5+5.do u make bigger cages?

Hi, James. We don’t make products — we just review some of the leading ones on the market. I’m not familiar with any crates that are the size you describe. You may want to look at outdoor kennels . There are a few available that may be small enough for indoor use. Best of luck and thanks for reading!

Hi. I am so confused with all the crate advice. I have a German shepherd with major separation anxiety. She was a rescue dog. Has lots of issues. The complete destruction of my house and going potty on the floor is what I can’t take any more. Shes 16 mos. old. Vet recommended Pro select. Its expensive for me. BUT I don’t want to buy anymore gates or crates!!! I don’t have any couches left. Shes eaten 3 doors, floor boards, etc… I don’t want to find her another home. I LOVE her , and who knows where she may end up when she destroys their things??! I need something that will last ! IF I have to put it on a credit card . so be it. Please let me know what you truly think the best bet would be to contain a crazy shepherd?

Meg Marrs Avatar

Hi Kristy. ProSelect is definitely the most heavy duty of them all (but as you noted, VERY expensive). Have you tried this style of heavy duty crate before? If so, you might be able to get away trying a less expensive model like the SmithBuilt. Unfortunately, there are always some dogs who can break out, so really hard to say. Your best bet is the ProSelect, but I know I myself would probably try some of the other models first if I never tried any kind of heavy-duty style crate before.

A versatile dog crate has many useful benefits for the dog owner. For example, a dog crate can be used to confine a pup to a particular area of your home while you’re out at work or when you head to bed at night.  Also, a dog crate can be a valuable tool that you can use when housetraining a puppy.

But would a dog crate work for you if your pooch is a confirmed escape artist? And won’t a dog crate be too flimsy to contain a super-size dog? If that sounds like you, a heavy-duty dog crate could be the answer to your prayers!

In this comprehensive guide, we take a closer look at heavy-duty dog crates that are practically indestructible. And, we’ve included in-depth reviews of four of the very best heavy-duty dog crates that are currently on the market.

Escape Artist Dog Breeds

So, what breeds of dogs are most likely to try to escape from a dog crate or a harness , and why? Check out our top ten canine Houdinis to see if your pup features in the line-up!

  • Labrador Retriever: The jolly, friendly Labrador retriever is a confirmed escaper! Boisterous, curious, and determined to be around people, the Lab is not averse to forcing his way out of a flimsy regular crate.
  • Siberian Husky: The husky is exceptionally energetic and was bred to run – literally. That means that these sled-pulling beauties are inclined to break out of a dog crate in search of adventure.
  • Boxer: The super-energetic boxer is a determined and somewhat zany character who’s a notorious escape artist . Also known as “not the sharpest tool in the box,” the boxer thinks nothing of bashing his way right out of a less-than-robust dog crate.
  • Jack Russell Terrier: The Jack Russell is a spunky little dog that will go to great lengths to claw, bite, and push his way out of a crate, often in pursuit of a cat or a squirrel.
  • German Shepherd: The German shepherd is a powerful, intelligent breed that is easily bored and frustrated. For that reason, the German shepherd is also known as a canine Houdini.
  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier: The Staffordshire bull terrier is a muscle-bound powerhouse who is easily capable of bulldozing his way out of a standard wire or wooden dog crate.
  • Cocker Spaniel:  Cocker spaniels love human company. For that reason, the breed can suffer from separation anxiety and will push and shove their way out of a flimsy dog crate to go in search of their owners. If you have an anxious dog, check out these crates built for anxious pups .
  • American Pitbull Terrier: The American pit bull terrier is a great bruiser of a dog that can easily escape from a standard dog crate by using pure brute force. If you have one of these mighty pups, you’ll definitely need a heavy-duty dog crate to keep your canine companion confined.
  • Golden Retriever: The perennial family favorite, the golden retriever, is also prone to escaping. Goldens are highly intelligent and smart, but they also need lots of exercise, and they can suffer from separation anxiety .
  • Dachshund: You might not associate the comical dachshund with escaping, but these feisty little dogs were bred to hunt, and their prey drive is still strong. Separation anxiety can also be a problem for the dachshund, and these little dogs will try to pry their way out of a regular wire dog crate to go in search of their human owners.

Who Needs An Indestructible Dog Crate?

Most dogs can be trained to sit quietly in a crate. However, some pups point blank refuse to be confined! Some dogs have the knack of finding a regular crate’s weak point. Large dogs with a significant bite force can easily chew their way out of a wire crate, and even some smaller breeds, such as terriers, are capable of ripping a cage to pieces.  Giant breeds need even more care, as many crates don’t come in giant sizes.  You can see a full list of crates for danes, mastiffs or other pups right here .

If you have a smart, clever dog, he can work out how to unfasten the latch on a regular dog crate. Small dogs are the usual offenders when it comes to latch manipulation as a means of escape. Also, most crate latches are designed to be easy for a human to open quickly, so they don’t offer much resistance to a determined pup.

Many powerful, unruly breeds, including bull mastiffs and American pit bull terriers, are strong and heavy enough to break through any weak points in a flimsy crate. Unfortunately, most designs of regular crates are collapsible, meaning that they don’t have solid corners.

So, regular wire crates have a whole range of weak points that can be exploited by a dog that’s determined to get out. Heavy-duty crates, on the other hand, are built with canine escape artists in mind. If you have a dog who consistently wriggles out of a regular dog crate, you’ll need to replace that with a heavy-duty one. Now, let’s consider what you should look for in a top-quality heavy duty dog crate.

Buyer’s Guide

A regular dog crate is perfect for the average pup. For a full list of basic crates, check out our favorites here .  However, when it comes to housing dogs who are the equivalent of a canine Houdini, you’ll need a dog crate that’s more robust and escape-proof. Also, heavy-duty dog crates are what you need if you’re planning on sending your dog on a long journey. So, as well as choosing a heavy-duty dog crate that’s the right size for your dog, you’ll need to look out for the following features too.

Features To Consider

Heavy-duty dog crates are what are termed as “overbuilt.” An overbuilt crate is designed to keep the dog safely and securely inside. So, you’ll note that a heavy-duty dog crate has thicker than usual bars and is of a much more robust construction than a regular dog crate.

You’re looking for a crate that’s made with bars, rather than wire mesh, which won’t withstand the force exerted by a large, determined dog. Heavy-duty dog crates also have fewer places where a dog could take a firm grip and use sufficient force to inflict terminal damage.

The overall build of the crate is very sturdy. Steel bars will be strong enough to prevent a strong dog from bending or warping them. Seams, hinges, and joints will be robust enough to keep Fido firmly inside, no matter how hard your pup might push and shove!

Regular dog crates have latches. That’s fine for your average mutt, but a smart dog can learn how to manipulate the latch from inside the dog crate, opening the door and making a sharp exit! Heavy-duty dog crates have sturdy locks and other design features that prevent the door from being opened from the inside by even the most determined pup.

A note on safety: Never use a carabiner or padlock to secure the door on a heavy-duty dog crate. In an emergency, you’ll need to be able to access your dog quickly and without a struggle.

Portability:

Most heavy-duty dog crates are fitted with wheels for easier portability. Heavy-duty dog crates are generally much heavier than regular dog crates, and a set of wheels is essential to allow you to move the crate around your home. However, if you’re planning on using your dog crate for air travel, you must make sure that the wheels are detachable, as the crate may need to be stacked.  If you plan to travel by car, there are better options .  If you have a smaller pup, a small carrier may be just the ticket.

Some heavy-duty dog crates are designed to fold down to make storage and transport more manageable, which is a worthwhile quality to look for if you plan on moving around with your pet.

Ventilation:

Although a heavy-duty dog crate must be solidly built, your dog must still be able to breathe, especially if he’s in transit. A good-quality crate should have plenty of ventilation so that your pup doesn’t have to breathe stale air. Also, a dog can easily overheat if the crate is kept in a confined space on a warm day. So, look for a crate that allows for good air circulation.

Durability:

A heavy-duty dog crate should be made from durable materials, preferably a metal that’s resistant to corrosion. That’s very important, as you’ll need to wash and disinfect the crate without damaging the metal.

Easy Cleaning:

Toileting accidents do happen, and you’ll need to be able to clean the crate easily. Look for a heavy-duty crate that has a removable tray in the bottom.

Heavy-duty dog crates usually sit at the top of the price bracket. So, if you have a puppy, it’s a good idea to buy a crate that will comfortably accommodate your pup right through to adulthood. Make sure that the crate has a removable divider too so that you can adjust the crate size accordingly as your puppy grows.

Easy-in, Easy-out:

When choosing a heavy-duty dog crate, always make sure that the crate has a large door that allows your dog to enter and exit the crate without becoming caught on the door or frame. You must be able to open and close the door quickly and easily, and it must stay secure once you’ve shut it.

Material Construction

Heavy-duty dog crates are typically made from aluminum or high-grade steel.Aluminum has a couple of advantages over steel in that it is lighter for easier portability. Also, aluminum won’t rust or corrode.

Stainless steel is your best bet if you want a crate to use outside. However, most high-quality steel cages are powder-coated for weathering resistance. Wood is not a good material for heavy-duty dog crates, as it’s too easily chewed. Plastic tends to be too flimsy for a large crate that’s intended to take a dog that’s prone to escaping.

Positioning Your Crate

Your dog’s crate should be a safe, secure haven for your pet. Also, correctly placing the crate can help to keep your dog calm and prevent further escape attempts. So, where should you position your dog’s crate?

  • Choose somewhere quiet where your dog can get away from the hustle and bustle.
  • Don’t place the crate close to a window.
  • Outside influences could upset your dog and trigger an escape attempt.
  • Avoid places where strong sunlight will penetrate the crate, causing your dog to overheat.
  • Don’t put the crate next to a heating source such as a radiator or fire.
  • Your dog could easily get too hot and try to escape from the crate to seek a cooler place to sleep.
  • Avoid putting the crate in an area where the ventilation is poor, such as a cellar.
  • Place the crate where it will enjoy a flow of clean, fresh air so that your dog can breathe easily.
  • Site the crate somewhere it will get plenty of natural light.
  • That’s important for dogs that are crated for long periods.
  • If you’re using the crate for housetraining your dog, position it close to you, especially at night.
  • Keeping your pup nearby will help to ease the puppy’s separation anxiety.

Outsmarting Your Escape Artist

Some dogs are brilliant escape artists! Here are a few helpful tips and tricks that will keep your pup safely in his crate.

  • Keep an eye on your dog : To find out how Fido is managing to escape from his crate, you’ll need to do a little investigation and observation. Most dogs wait until their owner is absent before making a break for it, so try setting up a webcam or position a security camera so that you can see what’s happening.
  • Reinforce crate seams : Many dogs escape by using brute force to pry apart the crate seams. A temporary fix would be to use carabiners to keep the seams intact, but in the longer term, you’ll need to buy a heavy-duty dog crate with reinforced, welded seams if you are to be sure of thwarting your pup’s break-out attempts.
  • Distract your dog with a favorite toy :   Try providing your dog with a favorite toy to play with while he’s confined to his crate. Sometimes, a toy can help to distract the dog and make him forget about trying to escape. Just make sure that the toy is safe to leave with your pet while he’s unattended.
  • Exercise your dog before crating him : A very effective way of dissuading a pup from trying to escape from his crate is to take him for a long walk or play games with him that will tire him out. A sleepy dog is less likely to try to escape than one who has lots of pent-up energy to get rid of.
  • Change crate placements : It may be possible to distract your dog from escaping by moving the crate to a different location every now and then. For example, try putting the crate near to a window so that your dog has plenty of distractions to watch that will keep him entertained.

Frequently Asked Questions

In this section of our guide, we answer some of your most commonly asked questions about heavy-duty dog crates. If you don’t see the information you need, fire us an email, and we’ll do our best to help you!

Can I buy a soft heavy-duty dog crate?

A heavy-duty dog crate should ideally be constructed from solid, robust material that will keep a confirmed escape-artist confined. Therefore, soft materials are not suitable for this type of crate.

How can I stop my dog from chewing through his crate?

If you have a dog whose bite is strong enough to chew through a standard dog crate, you should replace it with a stronger, heavy-duty one. Confirmed chewers will easily chomp their way through wooden, wire, fabric, and plastic crates. So, to keep your canine confined, you’ll need to buy a crate with thick-gauge steel bars.

Are heavy-duty crates best for big dogs?

If you have a big dog breed, such as a Great Dane, mastiff, or pit bull terrier, you should consider buying an XXL crate that will be a good fit for your pet. You don’t necessarily need to buy a heavy-duty crate unless your pup is prone to finding ways to escape. However, some large, heavy pups like to rest up against the side of their crate, and that could cause the sides to sag and buckle over time. In that case, a heavy-duty cage would be your best purchase with security and longevity in mind.

Can heavy-duty crates be used in a car?

No, not really. The dimensions of the crate are not the issue here. The problem with transporting a dog in a heavy-duty crate is that these units are generally too weighty to be easily lifted into a vehicle. Note also that the weight of the crate and its occupant could affect the car’s safe handling. You would be better to purchase a regular crate specifically for use when transporting your dog in your car.

For how long can I leave my dog in a crate?

Ideally, you shouldn’t crate your dog for more than eight hours. Puppies shouldn’t be expected to wait that long before being allowed out of the crate to relieve themselves.

Final Thoughts

Indestructible heavy-duty dog crates are best for dogs who have a tendency to escape. When choosing a heavy-duty dog crate, look for one that has a robust construction, secure locks, and is easily portable. If you intend to use your dog crate for air travel, make sure that the wheels are removable to enable airport service staff to stack the crate if necessary.

If the crate is to be used outside, be sure to choose one that’s made from solid steel, which has been treated with anti-corrosion and anti-rust protection products. Position an indoor crate in a quiet location that’s free from drafts, out of direct sunlight, and not next to a heat source. Site the crate in a shady location, and don’t place it underneath trees where fallen branches could present a safety hazard for your pet.

The 7 Best Indestructible Heavy Duty Dog Crates of 2024

indestructible travel dog crate

Dog crates are much more paw-pular now than they ever have been before. Maybe because there are so many choices of types, materials, and sizes.

These are not just big plastic boxes to put your dog in after all. He is your best fur-iend and you want him to be comfortable as well as safe. And some dogs really need to be crated while you are not home to keep them from eating the furniture or the cat.

With the proper crate, you should be able to keep your Houdini dog comfortable as well as safe.

Using an inferior crate or one that can be bent or pushed open can be very dangerous to your fur baby. He can become hurt when breaking out or get trapped during his escape attempt.

After evaluating more than 30 indestructible dog crates, I chose the “ProSelect Empire crate” as my favorite because It has extremely strong steel bars with two sliding locks that pups cannot get to.

And it has locking wheels so you will not have trouble moving it. Your pup will love it too since he can see everything around him and it has comfortable flat slats on the bottom.

But I understand you might have different needs, whether you’re looking for an indestructible dog crate for your escape artist or a crate for car rides. That is why I prepared a shortlist of our favorite indestructible dog crates that address different styles & needs.

Before we dive into the review section below , we’ll explain why your dog keeps escaping his crate , we’ll guide you step by step on how to choose the right size , and what criteria you should use to make the best selection for your needs .

In addition, we’ll answer some common questions from dog parents , and give you some tips on how to train your dog to love his crate .

So let’s get started.

First, a few words on Why Your Dog is Escaping from His Crate?

tokyo is staring to the camera while cuddling in her crate

Do you have a magician fur baby who seems to be able to get out of his crate no matter what you do to stop it? Some dogs are just “escape artists”. He may be bored, lonely, stressed, or he may just like the challenge of getting out of the crate.

For example, if you leave your Fido alone in the crate while you are at work and then again when you go to bed, he may not be getting enough stimulation. Here are some other reasons why dogs escape their crates.

  • Boredom: Any pup that is less than three years old is still considered a juvenile and you know how juveniles get when they do not get their way. They throw a temper tantrum! Your pup’s way of throwing a temper tantrum is doing anything paw-sible to get out of that crate you put him in.
  • Breeds: There are certain breeds that need to be doing something to be happy. You probably know humans like that too. Some of these include Anatolian shepherds, Siberian huskies, Australian cattle dogs, vizslas, border collies, and mastiffs.
  • Looking for a mate: If your dog is not spayed or neutered, they may be looking for a mate. It is their instinct to do so and there is no real fix for this besides getting your dog spayed or neutered.
  • Fear: Your pup may be scared of being alone or maybe they have a fear of small places. Yes, dogs can have phobias too. For example, thunderstorms and other loud noises may be freaking your dog out and he wants to get out of the crate to go hide somewhere.
  • Separation anxiety: If your dog escapes right after you leave the house, they probably have separation anxiety. Dogs that are strongly attached to their owners sometimes have a hard time being without them.
  • Wrong size: If your dog’s crate is too small, he is not going to want to be cooped up in there. Would you want to be in a tiny box that does not allow you to move? Your dog has to be able to stand up, turn around, and stretch out to be comfortable.

Choosing The Right Crate Size

tokyo playing in her crate

Although it may seem like you can just go and get the largest crate you can find that will fit in your house and it will be paw-fect, that is not the case. Not only can a crate be too small for your dog but they can also be too large for your dog.

Although some crates are selected by the weight of your fur baby, you really should go by your dog’s size. Because a long and tall greyhound and a short chubby pomeranian may be similar in weight but they are definitely not the same size!

How Big Should a Dog Crate Be?

So, your dog’s crate should be just big enough for them to lay down, stretch out, turn around, and stand up without trouble but it should not be any bigger than that.

Giving them too much room can encourage them to sleep on one side and relieve themselves on the other, and you do not want that.

Measure your pooch by length and height and add two or three inches. This will give you the length and height your pup needs.

Measuring an adult dog

Measuring your dog is pretty easy but you need him to be in a relaxed mood when you do it. Trying to measure a pooch that wants to play can be a bit stressful for both of you.

Wait until he is chilling out and be sure to give him a treat afterward. Also, If you plan to have a bed in there for your pup, make sure you add that into the measurements.

  • Length: To measure your fur baby’s length, go from the tip of his nose to the end of his body. Then add two to four inches for extra space. You do not have to include his tail unless it happens to be extra thick or fluffy.
  • Height: To measure your pup’s height, have them sit down and measure from the floor to the top of their head. Add two to four inches depending on your dog’s build.

What about puppies?

Puppies can be measured for the right size crate but you have to remember that they are not done growing yet.

Your three-month-old Labrador Retriever maybe 12 inches tall right now but by the time he is full-grown, he may be triple that size. A two-year-old Labrador can be up to 25 inches tall!

Luckily, they sell crate dividers (or puppy dividers) that you can put in the crate to make it smaller for him as a pup so you only have to buy one crate rather than buying a small one now and a larger one later.

Dog Crate Sizes

Dog crates come in many sizes and you may want to go by weight as well as size if you plan on carrying your dog anywhere in it because they have weight limits. 11 Rules Of Thumb When Buying an Indestructible Dog Crate

Whether to crate your dog or not is a big decision and many pet parents have strong opinions on the matter. Some say no way while others would not be without one. But your dog really should have a place to call his own. A space that is just his. And it is also great for potty training. Dogs have the natural instinct not to go potty inside their den and since the crate is essentially their den, they typically do not “go” in there.

  • Heavy-Duty Metal: Although some crates are made of other materials like wood or plastic, metal is the most durable material that you can get. It works wonders in keeping those escape artists where they belong. Stainless steel and strong aluminum are two good choices.
  • Non-Toxic Material: You always need to check anything your dog will be using for toxic materials. Just like a baby, anything they can put in their mouth, they will. In the case of crates, if you have a plastic one that is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), that is bad but high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is good. Other ones to watch out for include phthalates, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polystyrene (PS).
  • Your Dog Size: As long as you measure your pup using the directions we mentioned above your dog should be fur-fectly comfortable in his crate.
  • Ventilated Walls: For your pooch to have adequate airflow, it is important to have ventilation on at least two sides of the crate. The openings should be a minimum of one inch over the upper two-thirds of the opposite end and the remaining two sides, at a distance of four inches from center to center of each opening. The total ventilated area should be at least 16% of the total surface of all four sides.
  • Portability & Removal Wheels : If you have a heavy or large dog and you travel a lot, a crate with wheels is a pawesome invention. Dragging a heavy metal crate along the floor is not easy. However, if you fly, some airlines require the wheels to be removed or taped securely when you check them because they do not want them to roll around on the plane.
  • Locking Mechanism / Latch Type: Besides material, the lock or latch type is the most important feature. On a heavy-duty dog crate, the latch is the most common weak point that your pup is able to use to his advantage. Make sure yours has more than one locking latch and that it is made with high-quality welded metal.
  • Durability: The whole point of a dog crate is to be durable for your dog because dogs can be “ruff” on their stuff. It is best to get something of steel or other strong metal and be sure it is thick enough to stand up to your pup.
  • Ease Of Access: Some dog crates only have one door on the front while others have a door on the top too. This is pretty important when you are trying to get your dog out of the crate and he does not want to come out.
  • Rust Resistance: Whether you plan to use the crate outdoors or not, it is likely to come into contact with some kind of moisture. For example, your pet may have an accident if you get home late and they just could not hold it any longer. So, make sure whatever crate you get is made with rust-resistant metal or coated with a rust-resistant coating.
  • Removable Tray at the bottom / Ease of cleaning: Having a removable tray at the bottom makes cleaning your pup’s crate so much easier. If you have ever had to clean one of the extra-large crates that have one door and a solid floor, you probably had to climb in there and clean it from the inside. That is not fun. Warranty:  Any company that does not provide any kind of warranty is probably not a company that you want to buy from. No matter how much you are spending, you should make sure you are getting some kind of warranty. Especially for those expensive crates.
  • Made In The USA: Although other companies in countries besides the United States may follow the strict guidelines the US keeps in place, you do not really know this unless it is really made in the USA.

Common Questions from Dog Parents

tokyo trying to escape her indestructible crate

Should I cover my dog’s crate with a blanket?

If you have a dog that is anxious or searches for dark enclosed places when he is scared, a cover on his crate can make him feel safer. It helps block out the noise and distractions from outside the crate that may be irritating him and gives him a sense of security.

Should dogs sleep in crates?

Your dog may love having his own space in the crate and if you want him to sleep in there, place his favorite bed inside and leave the door open. He will soon be going in there on his own just to go to sleep. Giving your pup a nice comfy place to sleep in his crate can be a very good experience for both of you.

Crate training will provide many benefits to pet parents. Having a crate that is properly sized (more about that below) is essential to your pup’s instinct of not messing where he sleeps. This helps your fur baby learn to control his bladder and bowel control. Keeping his crate clean is important to housetraining your new puppy or rescue.

Another benefit of having a crate for your dog is that it helps to keep your pup out of trouble when you cannot be there to supervise. For example, if you are busy cleaning, cooking, at work, or when you are sleeping, you cannot focus completely on your dog as you would like to.

Is it cruel to crate a dog while at work?

Some people think crating your dog is cruel but a crate is supposed to be a bonus for your pooch, not a punishment. That being said, it is also a tool and preventative measure to keep your dog from tearing up your home when you are gone or sleeping. Crating your dog is only cruel if you leave him in there all the time and never give him attention.

Avoid crating your fur buddy for longer than five hours at a time unless you are sleeping or at work and the frequency should be minimal. When your pup is crated for long periods of time, it can lead to anxiety and depression because they get no interaction and exercise that they need to be physically and mentally healthy.

What can I put in my dog’s crate that he won’t chew?

If you have read some of our other articles on chew toys and indestructible toys, you know that there are many toys that are good for your pooch to play with alone and then there are the ones that are not. First, put your pup’s bed in there or a blanket that he likes.

Then you can add one or two very durable chew toys that are listed as very durable like the Kong Extreme.

Tips on How to Stop Your Dog From Escaping & Destroying His Crate

Although getting a durable dog crate and reinforcing it as much as you can will help, it is not enough to just worry about the crate. You have to worry about why your pup is trying to escape the crate. As we mentioned above, your dog probably has a very good reason to try to get out of his crate. He may be bored, have too much energy, spend too much time in the crate, the crate is the wrong size, or your pooch has separation anxiety.

  • Boredom: Make sure your pup has a good toy in there with him to play with. But be sure that it is a durable chew toy that will not break into pieces. And make sure he likes it, otherwise he will still be bored.
  • Breeds: Because some breeds need to be working when they are not sleeping, your best bet here is to wear him out. Take your dog to the dog park and let him run with the pack or take him on a run with you in the neighborhood. As long as you give him enough exercise, he should be okay with staying in the crate for a while.
  • Looking for a mate: As previously mentioned, if you get your dog spayed or neutered they will not have this issue to worry about.
  • Fear: Figure out what it is that your dog is afraid of and fix the problem. He may be afraid of loud noises he hears during the day. To solve this, turn on the television or a fan to provide noise that will cover any other noises he may be hearing.
  • Separation anxiety: There are many products on the market that can help you with separation anxiety. For example, there are cameras with sound that will help you see what your pup is doing and talk to him if he seems anxious. Just give him a few words of praise when you can during the day while you are not home and he may relax and enjoy his crate.
  • Wrong size: Make sure you use the above instructions for getting the right size crate for your pooch. You do not want him to be cramped into a small space and not be able to move around all day.

The Final Woof

tokyo is staring at the camera from inside the crate

Although the top winner only comes in two sizes, the sizes they have will fit almost any dog out there. And with the nickname of the “Alcatraz of dog crates” the ProSelect Empire crate is the best. It has extremely strong steel bars with two sliding locks that pups cannot get to.

And it has locking wheels so you will not have trouble moving it. Your pup will love it too since he can see everything around him and it has comfortable flat slats on the bottom. The others may have some of these features but not at such a decent price so this is definitely the best indestructible dog crate.

The Best Indestructible Dog Crates

Far from being cruel, dog crates give your canine companion somewhere safe to curl up, a little like a den, and limit the amount of damage he can cause while you’re out of the house.

For me, crate training became a necessity when my Cairn Terrier puppy developed a fondness for electrical cables. While he didn’t need a heavy-duty dog cage, when our Australian Cattle Dog came along, things changed.

A soft, collapsible dog kennel no longer cut the mustard, and we needed to find something that was virtually indestructible.

Initially, our search produced little of interest – even products recommended as the best indestructible dog crates were made of flimsy materials or featured latches that didnå’t lock properly.

After getting some expert advice and reading a few hundred reviews, we finally came across six items that fit the bill and will keep even the most talented and strongest Houdini hounds behind bars.

Our Best Indestructible Dog Crate

Pro Select Empire Cage - LARGE

ProSelect Empire cages are arguably the strongest in the world . With their 20-gauge steel reinforced tubing and dual door latches , these cages are designed to keep powerful dogs safe and calm. Ideal for high-anxiety and potentially aggressive dogs, ProSelect Empire dog cages come in either medium or large size, so are suitable for most dog breeds, although even the medium is probably a bit much for a Yorkshire Terrier!

Easy to assemble , the ProSelect Empire dog cage comes with optional casters for greater maneuverability . Move your crate to the warmest or coolest place in the house simply by wheeling it along and then locking it into position. Alternatively, you can remove the casters to make the crate more stable, which might be necessary if your dog's figured out how to move his container around to gain access to chewable knick-knacks, curtains, and the like.

While wire dog crates have their uses, dogs that do manage to escape may injure themselves in the process, which is why this steel construction is a better option. It’s proved capable of withstanding the jaws of the toughest and most determined chewers.

The latches aren’t perfect, and intelligent dogs will quickly figure out how to work them loose, although a sturdy padlock should be enough to stop them from escaping.

Providing a safe haven for dogs of all sizes, the Pro Select Empire cage is worthy of its hefty price tag, proving durable enough to withstand the mighty jaws of Rottweiler and featuring a clever enough design that even the quick-witted German Shepherd will find a challenge.

Mini Reviews For Indestructible Dog Crates

Need a specialty crate? Here are our runner-ups and specialized choices for crates.

Best For Escape Artists

SMONTER 38" Heavy Duty Dog Crate

A similar type of design to the ProSelect Empire dog cage, the Smother heavy-duty dog crate now features an upgraded anti-escape lock instead of the double-locking mechanism of the ProSelect. Instead of prison-like vertical bars, the Smonter features a unique Y-pattern designed to be bite-proof as well as eye-catching . It also means your dog can't get his nose through the bars, gaining access to the external latches in the process.

With its non-toxic finish, the Smonter is both safe and capable of keeping the most talented escape artist confined. Like the ProSelect, the Smonter has casters to make it easier to move it around. A removable tray on the floor also makes it easy to clean.

Despite its solid steel structure, Smonter's heavy-duty crates are surprisingly easy to put together . There are three sizes available, the largest of which is suitable for a 100lb dog, like an American Bulldog or Rottweiler.

The metal bars on the floor of this durable dog crate are quite widely spaced, so you will need a machine washable crate pad if you want to stop your dogs’ paws from slipping through the gaps.

Smonter’s pet crates are a little more affordable than the ProSelect’s steel crates and come with a 3-year warranty, which should give pet parents as much peace of mind as the cage gives to the most anxious of dogs.

Most Versatile Dog Crate

Petmate Navigator Pet Carrier with Antimicrobial Protection,

Unlike our two top choices, the Precision Pet indestructible crate is made of wire rather than steel bars and features both a double door design and a 5-point precision lock system . Its other key features include a divider separator and collapsible frame which are what make Precision Pet metal dog crates so versatile.

The separator enables you to adapt the size of the crate to provide maximum security and comfort as your puppy grows. It's lightweight enough to be used as a portable dog crate for vet visits and vacations, or you can fold it up and pop it in the trunk, ready for use when you reach your destination.

Unlike a standard wire crate, the Pet Precision model is made of heavy-gauge wire with a rust-resistant finish . The metal tray at the bottom slides out for easy cleaning , while the double doors give you more access points and, therefore, more choices about where to place the cage and its precious cargo.

The only real drawback of the Precision Pet design is that the horizontal wires under the doors are just wide enough for a small- to a medium-sized dog to get his paws caught. Using machine-washable crate pads can help reduce the risk, although fixing some heavy-duty material over the wires is a more effective solution.

Despite its durability and additional features, the metal crates from Precision Pet are much more affordable than the steel designs from ProSelect and Smonter. Admittedly, it probably doesn’t provide quite the same level of indestructibility but, for a dog that’s already trained and accustomed to a cage, it can help turn stressful situations into a positive experience.

Best For Travel

Pet Gear “The Other Door” 4 Door Steel Crate with Plush Bed + Travel Bag for Cats/Dogs

This portable crate uses a combination of durable materials to create a lightweight yet durable travel cage .

A heavy-duty steel frame makes this model more indestructible than most plastic crates, while the garage-door design means it doubles up as a comfortable kennel while also being ideal for day trips and visits to the vet.

The larger opening is also less intimidating for dogs suffering from anxiety and makes crate training a puppy easier than with the traditional design featured by ProSelect and Smonter.

Although smaller than the durable crates we've looked at so far, this portable crate is large enough to allow your dog a bit of movement while providing him with a sense of security .

Easy to assemble and fold down, 'The Other Door' pet cages also come with a convenient travel bag and built-in wheels to make them more portable. These pet cages come in three different sizes, the largest of which stands 28 inches tall, making them suitable for most adult dogs.

This high-quality product has a purpose-built steel latch mechanism for extra security and a non-skid bottom and bolster pad for additional comfort. Costing a little more than the Precision Pet model, ‘The Other Door’ steel crate is affordable and comes with a 30-day warranty.

Best Crate For Small Dogs

Carlson Pet Products Single Door Metal Dog Crate

Just because your dog is small doesn't mean he's any less destructive than a big dog - look at Biscuit! Admittedly, Biscuit's powers of devastation seemed restricted to electrical cabling, so a less durable type of cage was ideal for him. Not so the Jack Russell who chewed her way out of a wooden crate in under an hour, though!

While a durable aluminum dog crate could keep a determined Jack Russell under control, this wire crate is a better option. Not as attractive as a coffee table pet cage, perhaps, but considerably more practical. Like the collapsible cage from Precision Pet, this Carlson model can be folded away for transportation or storage purposes , while its steel construction means it will stand the test of time .

A removable tray at the bottom makes for easy cleaning , especially if you opt for a machine-washable crate pad made of quality materials. The smaller size makes it ideal for crate training puppies and providing small breed dogs with a safe haven.

A double-locking system provides extra security, while the 90-day warranty gives pet parents three months to assess its suitability. It’s also affordable enough that, even if it only lasts six months, it would have proved cost-effective.

Best Crate For Big Breeds

New World Folding Metal Dog Crate

Another portable dog crate, this collapsible dog crate is available in five size s, the largest of which measures 48" wide, 33" tall, and 30" deep, making it considerably bigger than most of the other options we've looked at . Even a fully grown Newfoundland could travel comfortably in this monstrosity!

The double-door design makes for easy access whether you're providing for your dog's natural den instincts in the home or giving him a safe travel experience.

Two heavy-duty slide-bolt latches keep your dog secure in stressful situations, while the removable plastic tray makes it easy to clean.

One of the benefits of a wire cage is that it gives your dog good visibility while providing a sense of security for those exhibiting signs of severe separation anxiety .

The vast majority of large dog owners have found this configurable pet crate to be effective at containing big breeds like Labradors and German Shepherd dogs. Not only does it give them room enough to move around, but it’s also small enough to provide that den-like sense of security.

Best Value For Your Money

Dog Crate 1536DDU MidWest ICrate

This affordable metal kennel offers great value for money but does come with a warning or two.

Not all products from Midwest appear to be the same standard in terms of quality, and pet parents who've purchased a sub-standard model have found sharp edges and poor quality latches.

If you do purchase this product, be sure to check it thoroughly before introducing your dog to his new home.

On a more positive note, the MidWest Homes for Pets ICrate comes with a one-year warranty so, if you do find any sharp points or sub-standard materials, you should be able to exchange the item immediately.

If up to standard, this crate for pets is both durable and versatile . It can be folded away for easy storage and comes with four roller feet to protect your floors and make it easier to move around.

Additional features include secure side-bolt latches, a divider panel, and a removable plastic tray for easy clean-up purposes.

Ideal for puppy training and helping a dog cope more comfortably with separation anxiety, the MidWest may not stand up to the destruction a pair of Bulldog jaws could inflict on it but is more than strong enough to house an energetic, 70lb German Shepherd.

A Buyer’s Guide to the Best Indestructible Dog Crates

What can you use a dog crate for.

Before we start considering things like materials and design, let’s consider what you want a heavy-duty dog crate for. Does your dog cower under the bed when lightning flashes overhead? Do thunder or fireworks make him seek sanctuary in a cupboard or other den-like environment? For stressed or anxious dogs, a heavy-duty crate provides a safe haven – a place he can go to find comfort and a little me-time.

Similarly, dogs that exhibit unwanted or destructive behaviors because of severe separation anxiety are reassured when enclosed in a cage that resembles a natural dog lair. Not only can this help to calm them down and alleviate some of the symptoms of separation anxiety, but it also prevents them from wreaking havoc in your absence.

Some unfortunate dog owners have come home to holes in the walls, and doors ripped off their hinges by stressed and lonely pets so, getting the right heavy-duty dog crate could save you a fortune in interior decor!

While some models are designed as more permanent pieces of furniture, collapsible dog crates double up as travel kennels, giving you an easy way to transport your dog safely. Having an over-excited canine leaping around the car is a recipe for disaster and, for some, a pet seat belt just isn’t enough to contain their enthusiasm.

Heavy-duty dog crates are also useful for house training puppies, preventing pets from intimidating visitors, and calming a dog during a stressful situation, like moving house.

Although dog crates have many uses, they should never be used as a punishment nor to keep a dog confined simply because he’s making a nuisance of himself.

Leaving a dog in a crate for too long can also create negative associations that may make him unwilling to go back in. While adult dogs that have been properly trained can cope with a whole night in a crate, puppies should only be left for a few hours at a time as they still need proper socialization.

What To Look For In A Heavy-Duty Dog Crate

High-quality materials are literally make or break when it comes to indestructible dog crates. Sub-standard wire cages can cause injury, while wooden cages are easily chewed making escape child’s play for a determined dog.

If you need to contain a dog that’s set on escape, a reinforced steel structure like that of the ProSelect Empire cage is your best option. Rust-resistant and durable, the ProSelect is “the Alcatraz of pet cages,” although the Smonter is also worth considering, with its welded steel bars and sturdy metal frame.

Some wire cages are suitable for potentially destructive dogs but probably won’t last as long as one built from steel bars. Plastic crates can be surprisingly durable, especially ones made of long-lasting blow-molded plastic, like ‘The Open Door’ model.

Locks and Latches

One of the most common problems with indestructible dog cages is poor-quality latches and lock mechanisms. Even if the main body of the cage is industrial-strength, a poorly designed latch made from sub-standard materials will render it useless.

Some determined escape artists have managed to open the locks on the ProSelect Empire cage by getting their noses through the bars and working away at the latch. The Smonter’s Y-pattern design is better in this respect as its bite-proof shape prevents that from happening.

The best type of latch is one that locks automatically when the door shuts as these have fewer external parts for your dog to get his mouth around. ‘The Other Door’ crate features tabs instead of latches but, as these are plastic rather than metal, they’re still not the best and can break relatively easily.

Getting the right size crate for your dog is essential. Too big, and your canine companion won’t experience the safety and security he’s seeking; too small, and he’ll feel confined and uncomfortable.

The right size for a crate to be used in the home, however, isn’t the same as the correct sized travel crate as the latter needs to be smaller to protect your dog against potential injury.

Ideally, a domestic crate should be big enough that your dog can stand up, lie down, and sit comfortably. He should also be able to turn around and have a stretch when needed. In other words, it should be “at least 6″ (15 cm) longer than their body length and 6″ (15 cm) higher than their shoulder height.”

A travel crate can be a little smaller, measuring the same height as your dog stands from his paws to the tips of his ears. Lengthways it should be equivalent to your dog’s body length, plus half the length of his legs, while the width should be double your dog’s shoulder width.

Getting the right size dog crate is only the first step to ensuring your dog’s comfort. Getting a good-quality crate pad or bed will also help him feel at home in his cage.

The best heavy-duty dog crates are compatible with most brands of crate pads, including top-of-the-range, heavy-duty, machine-washable, orthopedic offerings like the one from Big Barker .

Removing your dog’s collar and tags before he goes into the crate will not only make him more comfortable but will also prevent them from getting caught on any latches or wires and causing him potential injury.

Never put water into your dog’s crate as this will inevitably get spilled, leaving him with a soggy bed, and you with a big clean-up operation on your hands.

If you’re crating your dog to curb unwanted behaviors associated with separation anxiety, you can also throw your dog’s favorite toy or Kong, packed with his favorite recipe , in with him as a kind of rubberized comfort blanket.

Accessibility

The more easily your dog can access his crate, the more willing he’ll be to go in it, making your crate training sessions more successful.

Double-door designs have some advantages, especially if you move the crate around a lot and need access from various angles.’The Other Door’ design is also good with its garage-door concept giving the dog an entrance as wide as the cage is long.

The ProSelect and Smonter models aren’t quite so inviting, as the dog must step up as well as into the crate. With a little training and a comfy crate pad, however, you’ll get there in the end.

Portability

Regardless of what you need a heavy-duty dog crate for, being able to reposition it is essential. You may need to just move it around the room to provide your dog with suitable shade or so you can place it closer to a radiator. Maybe you need it to double up as an outdoor playpen or a travel crate, in which case, portability is even more crucial.

Top-quality models, like the ProSelect and Smonter, come with removable casters so you can wheel your cage from place to place. The downside of this is that the casters can cause the crate to be less stable, especially when your dog’s jumping around with excitement at seeing you again.

Some intelligent pooches have even mastered the art of moving a crate on wheels by their own volition, shifting it towards a chocolate bar left on a coffee table or a pair of delicious-looking curtains.

Of course, you could just remove the casters once the crate’s in position, or you could opt for a different design that can provide both maneuverability and stability, like the MidWest Homes for Pets ICrate with its roller feet and metal frame.

Why and How You Should Crate Train Your Dog

We explored some of the benefits of using a heavy-duty dog crate earlier on, so you should be familiar with some of the main reasons for crate training your puppy.

It can provide a safe haven for your puppy in stressful situations and prevent him from potentially hurting himself like Biscuit almost did chewing on electrical cables.

Crate training also helps potty train your puppy, prevent him from chewing on furniture, or eating things that might be harmful to him or precious to you – like USB sticks, for instance!

Crate training a puppy doesn’t have to be difficult if you do it the smart way and will be a benefit to both you and your dog for the foreseeable future.

Start by giving your puppy small meals in the crate, so he knows it’s his happy place. When he starts getting drowsy, put his favorite bed into the crate and let him nap in there for as long as he feels comfortable. Don’t shut him in initially – just allow him to explore this new environment and figure out for himself that it’s safe.

After a while, your puppy will start seeking out his crate as a peaceful place to sleep or enjoy some one-on-one with his favorite toy.

Never use a crate as punishment as this will only give it negative connotations in your dog’s mind, making it a place of fear or sadness rather than peace and comfort.

The Bottom Line

Pet crates come in all shapes, sizes, materials, and designs, but finding the best indestructible dog crate requires some serious research and dedication. Some products feature faulty latches, others sharp corners, and still others poor-quality materials. Price isn’t always an indication of quality either, with some of the most expensive heavy-duty dog crates proving the least durable.

For large dogs with serious chewing issues or a Harry Houdini approach to escapology, heavy-duty, reinforced steel crates are your best option. The ProSelect Empire cage is the pet equivalent of Alcatraz and has been specifically designed for powerful and potentially aggressive dogs.

Its 20-gauge steel bars and frame are probably strong enough to contain a tiger,  although some cunning canines have been able to figure out the latches so, if you’ve got a particularly wily Wire-haired Pointer, the Smonter might be a better option.

The Y-pattern design of the Smonter crate makes it virtually impossible for any dog, no matter how artful, to get his nose through the bars, making the external latch mechanisms inaccessible.

Although not as durable as the steel crates, some wire pet crates come close to being indestructible. The Pet Precision, Carlson, and New World wire crates are all versatile, durable, and collapsible, making them ideal for both travel and domestic use.

‘The Other Door’ steel crate is the best for travel in general and its garage-door design also makes it ideal for anxious dogs that may find entering a crate intimidating, to begin with. Few other plastic crates are as robust as this one, making them too flimsy to be considered indestructible. Similarly, while wooden crates look the part, they’re too easy for dogs to chew through, making them unsuitable for heavy chewers and escape artists.

More affordable crates often come with quality problems and should therefore be approached with caution. The Midwest Home For Pets crate, for example, is pretty tough, but it can also have dangerously sharp points that could cause your dog harm. You may be able to pick up a high-quality crate secondhand. Check local thrift stores for donated crates  if you are looking to save.

A crate needs to be a comfortable haven for your dog, especially if he suffers from severe separation anxiety, so choosing the best, most indestructible option is the best way to go, even if that means spending a bit more. After all, you want to know your dog is safe as well as comfortable if you’re not around to keep an eye on him.

Guardian Gear ProSelect Empire Dog Cage

  • Highly durable thick steel construction
  • Rust-resistant
  • Great for large and medium dogs
  • Grated floor tray
  • Removable caster wheels
  • Quiet pricey

Guardian Gear Empire product image

Next up is the Guardian Gear Empire, made by ProSelect – it’s one of the most robust crates on today’s market, designed to keep even the most aggressive or anxious canines safely contained.

It weighs 15.2 pounds and has the dimensions of 37″ x 25.3″ x 33.8″ . Unlike the plastic cages which are prone to your pup’s chewing, this thing is guaranteed to stop every escape artist from achieving his goal. The crate is very spacious and can easily accommodate canines of all breeds and sizes – it’s one of the model’s main selling points .

The construction quality of this model deserves only words of praise. Every stress point on its surface has undergone some heavy duty welding, so there’s no need to worry about breaking on bumpy roads. Furthermore, the crate’s corners are rounded off, preventing the possibility of accidental cuts . It is also rust-resistant.

When it comes to safety, we were pleased to find a couple of sturdy latches on the frontal door. They sport the strength of the steel tubing, preventing the dog from unlocking them in any possible way. Cleaning-wise, the ProSelect Empire comes with a removable steel tray which makes keeping the product clean a real breeze.

Even though the crate model is large and heavy, transporting it is a piece of cake. The thing that makes this possible is the inclusion of removable caster wheels – one only has to push or pull the object to move it from one place to another.

When it comes to downsides, we didn’t like the price tag of ProSelect Empire – it is among the most expensive heavy duty steel dog cages on the market. Therefore, it’s not really suitable for the budget-minded shoppers.

In our opinion, the ProSelect Empire is a perfect choice for the owners of strong, large dogs that always easily escape from conventional crates. This model is  guaranteed to effortlessly handle every escape  attempt of your four-legged companion.

Impact Dog Crate Collapsible Model

  • Collapsible, space-saving design
  • Durable anti-corrosion construction
  • Plenty of ventilation
  • No harmful toxins or chemicals
  • Easy to assemble
  • Higher price
  • Requires some assembly

Grain Valley Durable Aluminum product image

As one of the most expensive models we’ve reviewed so far, manufactured by Grain Valley has a  construction quality that justifies its price . This is an exceptional piece of pet equipment, and one that undoubtedly deserves a more in-depth look – let’s do it together!

This crate is a fully collapsible model – it takes just a couple of second to collapse it to a height of mere 8 inches! When we combine this with the IATA compliant certificate and the lightweight build, we get a model that’ sports high portability and is very easy to store away.

Another space-saving feature here is that the crate features stacking corners – one can easily stack multiple Grain Valley crates together.

When it comes to security measures, the kennel comes with the so-called “slam” latch, turning the crate into a self-closing model . The combination of aluminum and stainless steel as the primary build materials are guaranteed to provide your pet with the necessary amount of security during the car rides. Another thing worth mentioning is that the model is rust resistant , removing the need to avoid rain and wet conditions.

The ventilation, on the other hand, is solved by the addition of a generous number of holes in each side of the crate. Their purpose is to promote extra air flow and allow the owner to use the cage on warm days. The heat can also cause evaporation of toxic materials, but that’s not something you need to worry about with this model – no harmful chemicals were used during its manufacture.

On the downside, this crate doesn’t come with a detachable tray. This will present an issue for the owners of dogs prone to accidents. The model is also quite expensive, but we certainly didn’t expect a low price for a crate with such a great design and construction quality .

For the price that it comes at, this model certainly offers a lot – it’s one of the best indestructible crates we’ve had the opportunity to test so far. As such, we can do nothing else but give it our sincere recommendation.

product image of Homey Pet Heavy Duty Cage

Dog kennels are pretty big things, and even small ones can take quite a lot of space in your home. However, this might not be a problem for pet parents with small dogs, but for those who keep large breeds.

However, suitable size and heavy-duty construction have made 49” Stackable a favorite among dog owners. It features steel bars which are impossible to penetrate. They are coated with a powdery finish to prevent your pooch from damaging his teeth or skin.

Additionally, this kennel has an excellent anti-rust ability , which makes it ideal for outdoor use. It features three types of different doors, designed for multiple purposes. Small door upfront is quite convenient for water and food, while the top door provides a quick escape route.

They are equipped with the double chain lock, and the all-metal design makes it nearly impossible for your pooch to get out . The 49” Stackable has a slide-out tray, which is quite convenient and easy to clean. The plastic floor grid features the small hole, leaving the cage clean, while the residue goes into the tray.

We should point out this crate contains 360-degree rotating wheels with casters, which makes it comfortable to manipulate and move around . On top of that, you can assemble the entire unit in a couple of minutes.

Once we consider price and quality this product provides, you are getting an excellent barging. The cage will offer your pooch the maximum comfort while you are away.

SmithBuilt Heavy Duty Dog Kennel

  • Affordable price
  • Two-door design
  • Rolling casters for portability
  • Detachable metal pan
  • 360-degree visibility
  • A dog can potentially opent the top door

SmithBuilt Heavy product image

SmithBuilt is one of the most renowned manufacturers of extra strong metal dog crates – they’re  well-known for the comfort and security  of their models. Those looking for a reasonably priced heavy duty dog crate should consider their newest product, the SmithBuilt Heavy, as it offers good construction quality, a convenient 2-door design, and a removable pan for easy cleaning.

Unlike the cheaper kennels, the SmithBuilt Heavy comes with an ultra-durable and multi-layered finish  which is resistant to corrosion and fading. It has a very attractive design and offers 360-degree visibility to the dog, as well as the optimal airflow. The use of premium materials in its construction makes it one of the top choices in its price category.

One thing we like about this model is that it comes with two separate doors . There’s the top door, which the owner can use for feeding his pet, as well as the front door that provides the canine with easy access to the interior. The front door has two slide-bolt latches, providing your pooch with the necessary safety and security.

The SmithBuilt Heavy is also equipped with a removable metal pan . It is made out of long-lasting, high-quality material that’s very easy to wash and keep clean. Furthermore, its flooring pieces won’t retain stains or odor, allowing your pet to stay healthy and clean at all times.

Another thing we liked about this crate is that it comes with four rolling casters . As you can already guess, these provide maximum portability and allow the owner to move the object inside and outside the house quickly.

When it comes to disadvantages, we didn’t like that the top door has only one latch, unlike the frontal one which has two. Escape artist dogs could exploit this error and successfully make their escape. Moreover, the steel used for the model’s construction isn’t really of the highest quality, but it should serve the purpose.

If you’re on a tight budget but still need an escape proof kennel for your pup, definitely take SmithBuilt Heavy into consideration. It’s a reliable model with useful features that easily put it above the competition.

image of dog in crate at home

Unfortunately, our canine friends find  escaping from standard crates incredibly easy . To even have a chance at keeping them inside, the owners need to understand how their four-legged friends manage to escape in the first place.

There are endless variations, so we’re going to focus only on the three most common methods – chewing, manipulation of the latch, and the brute force.

Chewing on Connectors

Most of the regular wire crates come with metal connectors – their purpose is to keep the door mounted correctly and the sides connected with each other. Unfortunately, these connectors are often very flimsy, so it’s not a problem for the dogs to mangle them with their teeth and simply escape through the opening afterward. Remember, dogs can chew through almost anything,  especially softer materials .

Manipulating the Latch

If you own an intelligent dog, he’ll probably figure out how to escape from a cage sooner or later. One possible way is by manipulating the latch mechanism. His initial attempts to do such a thing might seem random and clumsy, but after some time, he’ll learn how the whole thing works and unlock the crate’s door with remarkable speed.

Brute Force

On the other hand, some dogs will simply use brute force to bend apart the door bars. After a bit of mouth-work, they will push their heads between the metal bars and use muscles and mass to bend them and fit their bodies through.

Pups often combine these techniques to achieve freedom. Don’t expect your pooch to give up easily – he has enough energy, time, and drive to get out.

When it comes to considering which features to look for when buying a heavy pet crate, the things are a bit more complicated than with the regular kennels. Take the following factors into account:

Although it’s the most important one, size is actually a very simple factor. Bigger is always better, except in case you intend to use the crate while traveling. If you do; then try to purchase a model that’s only a couple of inches longer than your canine friend.  Check out our in-depth crate size analysis here .

There are three most common materials used –  steel, aluminum, and wood.  The steel ones are the most durable and an excellent option for the aggressive dogs. The aluminum kennels are a bit lighter but equally as durable, while the wooden ones look the best but aren’t as safe as the two previous versions. For smaller and not aggressive dogs  check top soft-sided crates .

Portability

Most models come with  wheels – they are mandatory . Some models don’t, and we advise you to avoid them as moving them around is a real hassle, especially if you travel often. Crates with wheels will allow you to easily transport your pooch no matter the circumstances. For the less portable solution, you might as well go with  an outdoor kennel  or  a good quality playpen .

image of cute vizsla

Resistance to Rust

Another critical factor is the resistance to rust. Try to find a model that has a protective layer of special paint that gives it a necessary immunity to rust. With such a model, you won’t have to worry when the crate is exposed to elements.

Easiness of Entering/Exiting

Make sure that your dog’s new kennel has a large door that allows easy access to the interior. The door needs to be easy to open and close, as well as to stay tight and secure once it’s closed.

Easiness of Cleaning

Models with  removable trays are the easiest to clean  – it’s as simple as that. Make sure to get one if you want to be done with the chore of cleaning as quickly as possible.

Learn more:   What’s the Best Way to Clean a Dog Crate?

As you can see, using an escape-proof pet crate comes with a lot of benefits, for both the pooch and his owner. This is especially pronounced if you always bring your canine friend with you when you’re traveling –  a quality crate will provide the pet with safe and comfortable space in the car and other vehicles .

Furthermore, using a cage for a longer period will turn this object into a significant part of everyday life of your pet. It can quickly become the dog’s soothing space, a calm retreat which he can visit whenever he wants to. He’ll use it whenever  he’s afraid, stressed, or tired  – it will become a haven that belongs only to him and nobody else.

Dogs who are sick or have suffered a severe injury can also greatly benefit. Being able to keep your injured dog confined will undoubtedly give you the necessary peace of mind, and it will also prevent the pet from accidentally hurting himself and complicating his condition even further.

Because of these and other benefits, we have decided to put the market’s most popular models on a test. We took a closer look at each model’s construction quality, level of comfort, easiness of cleaning, accessibility, level of ventilation, portability, value for the money, and other features.

Our short but informative reviews should help you select a perfect heavy duty crate for your dog  that will suit the needs of your pup in every way .

Guardian Gear Empire product image

If we had to choose a winner, however, that would undoubtedly be Guardian Gear ProSelect . Although it comes at a higher price, it is, simply, one of the best products of this type on today’s market. We recommend it!

Awesome quality! My dog has met its match. No more escapes!

Summary of review for

Love this kennel. Not cheap like some dog kennels

Hanover, MD

One of the latches on the top entrance was bent so we can’t open the top entrance. We weren’t gonna use it anyways so it wasn’t a big deal. But if I’m gonna spend $200 for a crate I want everything to work whether I use it or not. But we really do love it. Only 6 screws to connect all of the crate together. It basically comes put together. The package box is not big or heavy.

Slidell, LA

Great and very heavy duty!!!! My little Houdini are unable to escape.

Very easy to set up. Large enough for a giant dog. Very sturdy. I am sure that no one is going to escape this kennel!

This is just what my son needed for his dog! He had chewed through his other cage and this one is a lot more durable and comfortable for him.

Herriman, UT

Rated 4 out of 5 stars.

This crate is great. The only reason for the 4 stars and not 5 is the latches could be stronger

Torrington, WY

Very happy with the crate. My dog is not at all apprehensive about going in it. He's hppy too.

What a difference. I have several dogs so several crates… leaving the doors open was an ocd nightmare not to mention the doors were always in my and the dogs way. Now i can leave them open with a nice flat face, looks so much better!!

1. LUCKUP Heavy Duty Dog Cage for Medium and Large Dogs

First on our list and best overall is the LUCKUP Heavy Duty Dog Crate. As a pet supply company, LUCKUP has great reviews on their products and customer service.

Some of this crate’s best features include easy installation, a 3-year warranty, a small feeding window, and high strength materials.

Unlike most of the indestructible dog crates on our list, the LUCKUP crate features a small feeding window to make it easier to give your dog the food and water he needs throughout the day.

Rather than opening the front door of the cage and letting an excited puppy loose, or opening a top door and letting your dog jump out (and potentially hurt himself), you can open the small feeding window on the front of the cage.

Materials & Weight: The LUCKUP Heavy Duty Dog Crate is made from corrosion-resistant steel and coated in a non-toxic finish to protect your pup’s health.

In addition to the feeding window on the front, this crate has a large front door to let your dog in and out and a top door to give him some love throughout the day.

Because of the steel material, this crate weighs in at 81 pounds.

Additional Features: The LUCKUP crate has two removable plastic trays that catch any stray food, shedding, or other messes that may happen in the crate. They’re easy to clean, dry, and slide back into place without much hassle. This crate is also equipped with four caster wheels that rotate 360 degrees and can lock firmly in place to keep your dog’s crate in one spot – no matter how much tossing and turning he does.

Warranty: If you experience an issue with this crate, LUCKUP offers a 3 year warranty. You will need to contact their customer service through Amazon for assistance.

Sizes: 38 in., 42 in., 46 in., 48.5 in.

Bottom Line: The LUCKUP crate meets the standards of other indestructible crates but stands out with a feeding window, great 3 year warranty, easy installation and quality materials. However, keep in mind that this crate doesn’t appear suitable for small dogs.  Additionally, they don’t offer a phone number to call, so you will need to contact them through Amazon or by email.

2. SMONTER Heavy Duty Strong Metal Dog Cage

2. SMONTER Heavy Duty Strong Metal Dog Cage

If you need extra assurance that your indestructible dog crate is a good investment, the SMONTER Heavy Duty Dog Crate has you covered.

Not only is their crate made of welded steel bar and a heavy-duty metal frame, but they also offer a three-year warranty for your purchase. With that long period of quality assurance, SMONTER is clearly confident in their product.

Materials & Weight: Despite the sturdy metal frame and welded steel bar, the SMONTER crate weighs in at 69 pounds, which is not bad for an indestructible crate like this one. It also features a non-toxic finish to protect your pup if they decide to try and chew their way out. They also have t wo locks with safety buckles to prevent your dog from escaping the crate.

Additional Features: Like most of the indestructible dog crates on this list, the SMONTER crate features four caster wheels that rotate 360 degrees, all of which you can lock in place for some extra stability. There is a removable plastic tray to help catch spills, which makes cleaning quick and easy.

A distinct feature for SMONTER crates is their “Strengthen” upgrade option. Their standard crate has an escape-proof, Y-shaped design to prevent your dog from reaching the lock of the crate.

However, if you need to take that one step further, the “Strengthen” upgraded crate features the Y-shape design plus an anti-escape plug lock to be absolutely sure your escape artist doesn’t go anywhere. The “Strengthen” upgraded crate does not have a top door and does not include the feeding window – both of which the standard model does.

Even still, the upgraded “Strengthen” version of the SMONTER crate is priced around $70 more.

Warranty: Both versions of the SMONTER Heavy Duty Dog Crate come with a three-year warranty.

Sizes: 38 in., 42 in. (can also be upgraded to “Strengthen”)

Bottom Line: With an optional upgraded version of the crate and an impressive three-year warranty, the SMONTER Heavy Duty Dog Crate is an excellent investment for dog parents who are at their wit’s end with their aggressive chewer or escape artist.

3. Pro Select Empire Cage for Large Dogs

3. Pro Select Empire Cage for Large Dogs

If you’re willing to pay a pretty penny for your indestructible dog crate, look no further. The ProSelect Empire Dog Cage will run you about $500 – but with good reason. This is the only chew proof dog crate on our list with a “Veterinarian Approved” endorsement, and it’s made from heavy-duty steel. If money is no object, or you’re simply tired of spending money on lesser quality crates every few months, this is the crate for you.

Materials & Weight: The ProSelect crate is made of ž-inch, 20-gauge steel, reinforced with ½-inch steel tubes, and heavy-duty welding at high-stress points. The crate also features a high-grade hammer tone finish to keep the corrosion and rust far, far away.

Because of the indestructible steel frame and materials, this crate weighs in at a whopping 99 pounds.

Additional Features: The ProSelect crate comes with a steel tray for easy cleanup of spills and messes and four removable casters that you can lock into place (yep, all of them). This crate also features heavy-duty dual door latches to keep your dog safely inside, no matter how anxious he gets. It’s also worth mentioning that the ProSelect crate is the self-proclaimed “Alcatraz of pet cages.” If you have an escape artist or high-anxiety pup, this is a fantastic option for you.

Warranty: While there is no warranty listed for the ProSelect crate, several reviews on Amazon say that it isn’t necessary due to the heavy-duty steel.

Sizes: Medium (34 in.), 42 in.

Bottom Line: While you will pay a premium for the ProSelect Empire Crate, it’s worth it. With a veterinarian stamp of approval and heavy-duty, reinforced steel, this crate will keep your dog securely in place – for years to come.

4. PUPZO Dog Cage Crate Kennel Heavy Duty for Large Dogs

4. PUPZO Dog Cage Crate Kennel Heavy Duty for Large Dogs

While most of the crates on our list are made from steel, PUPZO kicks it up a notch with carbon steel. Carbon steel is a bit harder and stronger than regular steel (thanks to the high carbon content), but it’s more susceptible to corrosion if left unfinished. Luckily, the PUPZO Dog Cage has a non-toxic coating to keep the rust at bay without posing a risk to your pup.

Materials & Weight: Like many of the crates on our list, the PUPZO dog crate has a large front door to let your pup in and out and a top door to interact with your dog.

That carbon steel frame isn’t just stronger – it’s also more lightweight than standard steel frames. As such, this crate weighs in at 78 pounds.

Additional Features: While this crate has four wheels to help you move it around easily, only two of them can lock into place. If your dog has high anxiety and moves around in his crate a lot, you may see the crate scooting to one side a bit! Just make sure the crate is in a location that can accommodate a bit of movement.

The PUPZO crate also comes with one steel tray to catch fallen food and messes, easy to clean and strong enough to last for years.

Warranty: PUPZO offers a 1-year warranty from the date of purchase for this crate.

Sizes: 38 in., 42 in., 46 in.

Bottom Line: With a carbon steel frame, this crate is made of the most sturdy material out of the ones on our list. It is a bit heavy, but worth it for the durability. A one-year warranty helps you feel even better about your investment.

5. Lemberi Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate for Large Dog

5. Lemberi Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate for Large Dog

Most dog crates don’t list focus as much on weight capacity. However, the Lemberi Heavy Duty Dog Cage boasts a monstrous 300-pound weight capacity! No matter how big your pup is, Lemberi’s dog crate can handle him – and then some.

Materials & Weight: The Lemberi Heavy Duty Dog Cage is made from 20-gauge steel and reinforced steel tubes. According to their product listing, the non-toxic coating on the steel frame is corrosion-resistant and environmentally friendly. Thanks to the all-steel materials, this crate weighs in at 84 pounds.

Additional Features: A with most indestructible crates, the Lemberi crate has four casters that rotate 360 degrees to make it easy to move the crate from one spot to another. However, only two of the wheels lock into place, leaving the other two loose. There are two doors, one large front door, and a large top door, both of which are equipped with anti-escape locks. This crate also comes with a removable metal tray to catch food and other spills.

As mentioned, this indestructible crate’s most distinctive feature is its weight capacity. At 300 pounds, the weight capacity can handle any dog’s size and breed.

Warranty: Almost as impressive as the weight capacity is the warranty. Lemberi offers a 30-month warranty on their Heavy Duty Dog Cage. Yes, 30 months, not 30 days!

Additional Sizes: 42 in., 48 in.

Bottom Line: If you have a large breed dog that you need to contain, Lemberi is likely the right choice for you. With a weight capacity of up to 300 pounds, reinforced steel tubing, and a 20-gauge steel frame, even your biggest buddy will be safely contained in this chew proof dog crate. If you have any issues with it, you can take advantage of the 30-month warranty that Lemberi offers with their crates.

6. JAXPETY Tip Roof Heavy Duty Dog Cage for Dogs

6. JAXPETY Tip Roof Heavy Duty Dog Cage for Dogs

You may need a crate option that strikes a balance between being indestructible while being light enough to move around the house whenever you need it. In that case, JAXPETY’s Heavy Duty Dog Cage is just the thing for you. This dog crate is heavy-duty, but it only weighs 62 pounds – just right for quickly moving your pup’s crate from place to place without too much strain.

Materials & Weight: The JAXPETY crate is super light thanks to the galvanized metal frame. It’s still indestructible but much lighter than steel, or even carbon steel frames are. At only 62 pounds, this is an ideal choice for you if you need to move your dog’s crate around the house a lot.

Additional Features: The JAXPETY dog cage comes with the standard tray and four casters that most other indestructible crates have. You can only lock two casters into place, so just be mindful of the crate’s location. The front door has two slide-bolt latches, and the top door has one so you can easily take a peek inside and interact with your pup.

The most distinctive feature of this crate is the pointed rooftop design. This gives your dog plenty more headspace than traditional dog crate designs while still maintaining structural integrity to handle your pup on his most wild and wiggly days. If your dog is a little on the tall and lanky side, this crate will provide some extra height to help him stay comfortable.

Warranty: Unfortunately, JAXPETY does not list a warranty for any of their dog crate products.

Sizes: 42 in.

Bottom Line: The JAXPETY Heavy Duty Dog Cage is a great lightweight option at only 62 pounds and is easier on the budget than other indestructible crates. The extended rooftop is excellent for taller dogs, but be aware that there is no warranty listed.

7. Polar Aurora Heavy Duty Pet Dog Cage

7. Polar Aurora Heavy Duty Pet Dog Cage

Let’s take a trip to the flip side of the coin and check out the most budget-friendly option on our list – the Polar Aurora Heavy Duty Dog Cage. This crate is on the lighter side, has many of the same features as most crates on our list, but it will only cost you $150. If you’re just getting into the indestructible crate scene and not sure where to start, this may be it.

Materials & Weight: The Polar Aurora crate has a heavy-duty steel frame but does not list a finish or coating material. It’s relatively light for a steel frame, weighing in at 64 pounds, and according to the product listing, you can easily fold it down to transport it anywhere you’d like.

Additional Features: This chew proof dog crate features four casters, two of which are lockable, and a steel tray to catch all of the messes, food, and fur that falls through the grate. The front door has two latches for extra security, and the top door has one latch.

Warranty: Unfortunately, there is no warranty listed for the Polar Aurora Heavy Duty Dog Cage.

Sizes: 37 in., 42 in., 48 in.

Bottom Line: If you just want to try out an indestructible dog crate to see if it is a viable solution for your pup, this is an excellent starter crate. It’s lighter than most, easily movable, and only costs $150. Just be aware that there is no warranty for the Polar Aurora crate.

Buyer’s Guide for Indestructible Dog Crates

So, now that you have a few solid options to work with (pun intended) let’s talk about the specifics you need to consider when picking the perfect indestructible dog crate. You need to iron out your list of needs before you go shopping to make sure you get a crate that is tailored perfectly to your pup and your home.

Answer these questions before you make your final pick:

What’s your pet’s breed and size?

It seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people order a dog crate without measuring their dog first or not accounting for growth. Your pup should be able to walk comfortably into the crate without crouching down, and he should be able to turn around a full 360 degrees without issue once he’s inside.

He should have plenty of room when he stands, but it’s okay if he has to duck a little bit when he sits – dogs are usually taller when they sit down.

To get the specific dimensions you’ll need, measure your dog’s length from the tip of his nose to the base of his tail. Then, measure his height from the top of his head to the floor. Got your measurements? Now, add four inches to each measurement.

For example, if your dog measured 30 inches tall and 37 inches long (average size of a Golden Retriever), your final measurements are 34 inches tall and 41 inches long. These numbers will tell you roughly how big your crate should be.

If you’re buying a crate for your young puppy who will do a lot of growing, look up the average adult size for his breed and use those numbers to guide your buying decision. You can buy crates that come with divider panels to keep your puppy from having too much space, but that also allows you to adjust the area in the crate as he grows.

Is this easy to clean?

This is a critical question, especially if the crate is housing a young puppy in the early days of his life! The grate floor of most indestructible crates will let food, loose fur, and pee right through, but as soon as poo comes into the equation, it gets a little messy; well, messier . The poo won’t go through the bars very easily.

And when you try to pull out the tray to clean up the stuff that did get through, you have to pull piles of waste through a thin slot. Imagine how well that will go! (Hint: it won’t go well at all.)

If your dog is well potty-trained and you don’t foresee this to be an issue, then there’s nothing to worry about. The slide-out trays are a breeze to pull out, wipe or hose down, and slide back into place.

However, if you have a young puppy or your dog has accidents often due to stress and anxiety, consider putting the plastic or steel tray on top of the grate floor or finding some other alternative to make cleanup a little easier.

What kind of lock do I need?

If you’re in the market for an indestructible dog crate, chances are you have quite the escape artist on your hands – whether by cunning skill or brute force.

As such, you’ll want to pay close attention to the locks on your potential crate purchase.

Are they standard locks? Are they anti-tamper locks? Is there one lock on the main door or two of them for extra security? Can my dog reach the lock through the slats of the crate with his nose or paw?

All of the indestructible crates on our list have heavy-duty locks, but some only have one lock on the front door. Just be mindful of the lock specifications when you’re shopping around for your crate.

Do I need it to be portable or stay firmly in place?

You probably don’t want to be lugging your 99-pound dog crate over to a friend’s house for the day! But maybe your dog is less anxious when he’s in the same space as you, so you want to be able to move the crate from room to room in your house.

In this case, make sure your chosen crate has caster wheels to make things much easier for you. You can wheel the crate into the living room while you’re watching TV, into the kitchen while you cook, and even into the bedroom if that’s where you prefer to have your dog sleep.

On the flip side, maybe you want to set up your crate and leave it that same spot for years to come. Check the specification of your chosen crate and make sure that the caster wheels are optional rather than built-in. You might be able to remove them, but you’d have a heck of a time getting them off! Better to go with the optional caster wheels and leave them off when you assemble the crate at home.

If you’re looking for the best indestructible dog crates, then some of these 7 chew proof crates should fit your needs.

There’s crates that are feeding-friendly, lightweight, durable, budget-friendly, vet-approved, capable of supporting heavy weight, or come with a good warranty.

Check out our buyer’s guide to help decide the best choice for your dog.

The Best Dog Crates for Car Travel 2024

Like many unknowing dog owners, I used to allow my dogs to ride in the back seat or hitch of the car without worrying about their safety. They lay down and were calm, so I never saw a need to use a dog crate for car travel.

When I got Sitka, however, there was no sitting calmly in the car while I drove.

Sitka is anxious in the car, and after the first ride involved him lunging at trucks and motorcycles, pacing back and forth, and whining the entire time, I knew I needed a solution to keep us safe and sane.

Initially, I secured him using a harness system from Kurgo that is crash-tested and kept him from pacing, but he’d spin and tangle himself in the straps resulting in needing to pull over to untangle his legs periodically.

From there, I decided to look into a kennel and began intense research to find the best dog crates for car travel. I asked friends, polled my Instagram audience, read reviews, and emailed brands to create a list of potential candidates.

In this post, I feature the dog crates that I considered purchasing, which means they met the criteria I will explain below. I explain why I chose the one that I did and provide suggestions for why other brands might work best for your car situation and dog.

Gunner Kennels G1 Medium

My pick for best dog crate for the car

Don’t feel like reading all the research and just want to know my top pick? My dogs ride in GUNNER Kennels. They’re one of the more expensive dog crates on the market, but it is worth every penny because I fully believe they will survive in an accident.

Click here to buy a GUNNER Kennel now >>

Why Should a Dog be in a Crate in the Car?

Even if your dog was like my first dogs and settled calmly in the car, it’s a good idea to secure them in a dog kennel in the event of a car accident.

Here are the three main reasons:

Think about it, we buckle up every time we get into the car, but many dog owners don’t often consider securing their dog. In a crash, unsecured dogs will become projectiles and can result in serious injuries and death.

If you are injured in a car accident, your dog will be in a safe and secure spot where they cannot run away or bite anyone.

When I drove with Sitka the first time, I was certain we would get into an accident. His movement and whining was so distracting that I couldn’t concentrate on driving.

In 2019, Volvo conducted a safety study that determined that unrestrained dogs led to significantly more unsafe driving behaviors, distracted driving, and increased stress for both the human and the dog.

In the Event of a Car Accident

In the unfortunate case that you are in a car accident, there are a few preparation steps to take to ensure the utmost safety for your pet.

This is especially important if you are injured and unable to tend to your dog after a crash.

Secure a laminated form on top of or inside of the kennel with the following information:

  • Your first and last name
  • Phone number
  • Emergency contact for your dog who is authorized to make choices on your behalf
  • Veterinarian
  • Any allergies your dog may have
  • Other pertinent information about your dog

Keep a spare leash and a muzzle in the car and include instructions about how to remove your dog from the kennel and where to take them until you are able to pick them up (i.e. with a friend or e nearest veterinarian).

When working with emergency personnel, if you are able to, communicate to them that you will be the one to remove your dog from the kennel.

I once saw a video posted on Instagram where a dog jumped out and started to run away when the firefighters removed him from his crate. Thankfully, he had his e-collar on and was able to be recalled back.

In stressful situations, dogs can bite or run away. Do as much as possible to prevent that from happening by communicating as best you can with emergency crews and in writing.

What to Look for In a Dog Crate for Car Travel

When deciding on the right dog crate for your needs, there are several factors to take into consideration that will ensure the best fit for your dog and car, and still meet safety requirements.

Size and Fit

When you measure your dog for the crate, you want a snug fit. Too much excess space means that they can become injured due to increased impact from a crash.

You also don’t want it too snug because then your dog won’t be able to move around to get comfortable.

Since most of the kennels in this article are not available to purchase in stores, testing fit is not an option. The best plan is to provide your dog and car’s measurements and dog’s weight to the manufacturer and work with them to determine best fit.

To best protect your dog in the car, look for a dog crate that is made from a single piece of molded polyethylene. A single piece means that there are no weak points in the kennel that can fail in an impact.

Materials to avoid include:

  • Folding crates
  • Traditional plastic “clamshell” dog crates.

Crash-testing

The Center for Pet Safety (CPS) conducted a series of crash tests for dog crates in partnership with Subaru of America in 2015. CPS evaluated crates that cost between $150 and $1000 and put them to a series of tests, including:

  • The use of dummy dogs weighing 75 lbs
  • Conducted two different crash test with rear seat folded in one and up in the second
  • Simulated crashes at speeds of 30 mph

You can see the test results from the report here .

There are many dog crates out there that claim to be crash-tested, but because there is not the same requirement for testing the safety of dog crates as there is for cars or child seats, purchasers need to do their homework.

Since the most recent CPS test was performed in 2015, there are likely suitable kennels that didn’t make the list or new additions to the market that weren’t tested.

Email the manufacturer to ask about their crash testing protocols and read reviews from people whose dogs were in car crashes to validate the claims.

Strap Loops

Some dog crates come with strap loops that allow you to secure the kennel into your car. This is especially important for those whose dogs will ride in open bed trucks.

Different manufacturers may recommend different types of straps to tie down the kennel. Check in with them before purchasing if you plan to secure the kennel in your car.

Ventilation

It can get hot and stuffy inside of a plastic box, so when you’re looking for a crate for your dog for the car, make sure that it has good ventilation.

This means there are plenty of air holes on the sides that provide cross breezes.

Sizing Your Dog Crate for the Car

Depending on the kind of car you have and your dog’s size, different crates will fit differently. Further, placement depends on where your car’s crumple zones are located.

For example, the front and rear of many cars feature a crumple zone, designed to protect passengers, but that’s not where you want the kennel to sit.

You’ll want to check with your car’s manufacturer to determine where the crumple zones in your specific car are located. Next, measure to ensure the kennel will fit in the designated safe location.

Comparison of the best dog crates for car travel

The best dog crates for car travel.

I conducted deep research on several dog crates for car travel before making a decision. I visited several different websites and combed through reviews and talked to my community on Instagram to get their take on different kennels.

Some key features to look for include:

  • carrying handles
  • stackability for multiple dogs
  • tie down options

A quality dog kennel that will protect your dog in the event of an accent is not cheap and you get what you pay for in most cases.

The typical wire cages or clamshell airline kennels are not suitable for safety in the event of a car crash. They will not protect your dog.

After all of my research, these are the brands that I considered, including the one I ultimately chose.

Top Pick for Dog Crate for Car Travel – Gunner Kennels

Gunner is an industry leader when it comes to dog crates the car. They are the only crate that passed in the 2015 CPS study and have a 5-Star Crash Test Rated designation from the organization.

Practically indestructible, Gunner tested the kennels by tossing the crate off a 200-foot cliff, dropping a 630-lb sled on it, shot it with a shotgun, and applying 4,000 lbs of pressure to it. All tests resulted in very little damage.

This is the kennel I use for both of my dogs. Two Mediums fit perfectly in the back of my Forester. Read my Gunner Dog Crate review here .

The Dakota 283 is my pick as the runner up for best dog crate for car travel.

If you can’t afford a Gunner – Dakota 283

When I was fiRst looking into purchasing a dog crate for the car, I initially went with the Dakota G3 Medium . Although it’s not crash test rated, by CPS, the company has don extensive testing on the kennel.

Here’s what they said when I reached out to ask:

“We have done internal testing of our kennels through a variety of impact tests including 25 ft drop testing for impact and durability. Our testing drives us to test to failure on most tests so that we know limitations and strengths.

Additionally, and most important (sic) is that our kennels have been involved in several rollover accidents with the dog surviving uninjured. This is the ultimate test and testimonial to our design and performance.”

It’s important to consider that Dakota Kennels came out after CPS conducted the safety studies.

I chose the the Dakota G3 medium because it seemed like a good mix of the Ruffland and the Gunner Kennel, with a mid-range price tag. The military strength crate is made from a single piece of rotomolded Polyethylene that resists extreme impact.

I did like this kennel and felt very confident that it would protect my dog in the event of an accident. It was roomier than the Gunner, which isn’t ideal for car travel. It’s also taller, so blocked my rear vision more than the Gunner.

Dakota 283 generously provided a discount code for Long Haul Trekkers followers. Get 10% off your order with code SITKA10 at checkout.

The RuffLand Kennel is the best budget dog crate for car travel.

Best Budget Pick – RuffLand

RuffLand Kenne ls (formerly known as Ruff Tuff Kennels) are the one of the most popular kennels for car travel. They’re very affordable and made from a durable one-piece roto-molded construction that can withstand heavy impact.

They were tested in the CPS crash test and performed well when placed in the rear cargo area against the rear seatback, however in the test without the seatback for reinforcement, the door completely separated from the crate and the dummy dog was not retained.

You can read more about the testing here .

RuffLand kennels are tapered to ensure full breathability, even with gear stacked right up against the crate. The brand also makes tie downs specifically for their kennels to ensure further security in the car.

And there you have it! It’s a small list of kennels, but they are all crates that I would trust my dog’s life with.

Do you use a dog crate for car travel?

Have you been in a car accident with your dog and have any tips to share.

Sunday 5th of November 2023

I am searching for a dog crate for a 10 lb adult dog. Presently I use a hard plastic, 2 door one and place on back seat behind passenger side. I do place the seat belt around it and it is entirely snug and does not move. I am not sure it if that is the best solution but it’s the best I have come up with for her. It fits in an Acura SUV and also Audi 8 SUV but it takes some work to get it cinched in tightly. Any suggestions? Thank you for any help you can give me. Beth

It sounds like to me that your set up is pretty good, actually! What specifically are you looking to improve?

I found your website while trying to find a kennel that would fit my dog and my car...apparently, I adopted a dog too large for my car! Some of these kennels will fit my cargo area sideways, but then I don't have access to the door. Most of the ones that fit my car are too small for my dog. The only one that might possibly maybe could fit the cargo space and be large enough for my long and lanky pup is the RuffLand with 2 doors. Do you have any thoughts on that second door being added to the side of the kennel? Their website states that they've made some changes to the design recently and reinforced a few things. I need a better setup for my girl because I want to start competing with her, which means she'll need a crate for traveling as well as a comfortable place to relax between runs.

Side note: I appreciate the way you answered certain questions/comments that maybe shouldn't have been posted on a public forum. :)

I think the Ruffland is a great option! I'm considering getting one with a side door for my car as I'm about to get a second dog and am debating if I want any trunk space at all or if I'll put it in front of my other kennel in the back seat area. And I appreciate your side note. 😉

I am trying to find a double crate so both of my dogs can ride in it in the car. Any thoughts?

Monday 1st of May 2023

I personally wouldn't recommend that. I'm just not a fan of having two dogs in a very small enclosed space where I can't attend to them easily. Unless you have a divider that can go between them, I would get separate crates. The Variocage might have a divider option!

The Lucky Duck Premium Kennel is 5 star crash test certified. It is also pricey, but worth the cost. It has a locking door and holding mechanism at the top and bottom of the door, to insure the corners don't separate from the door opening. It is what I use for my performance dog. I am curious as to why it wasn't included in your review (I thought you had it included in a prior review). Thank you for your research into car travel safety, it is very helpful!

Tuesday 21st of March 2023

You know, I looked into the Lucky Duck, but didn't add them to this list for whatever reason, but I remember that I did like them. I'll have to go back and evaluate-thanks for the prompt!

Zinger Professional Airline Compliant IATA CR 82 Travel Dog Crate

Zinger Professional Airline Compliant IATA CR 82 Travel Dog Crate

This product has been discontinued.

The differences between this top of the line Zinger Professional crate and the standard Zinger Deluxe model has to do mainly with the heavy duty door construction on the Professional model. On any crate the door is consistently the weakest point and "Houdini" dogs typically target this area in their attempt to escape. In the Professional series we have reinforced the door with extra bars, welds and bracing. As an added layer of security in the Professional series we have added a secondary locking plate to the door frame and to add extra value we also include a set of Heavy Duty Handles. Each door has a full length piano hinge and can be mounted to open left or right.

The Zinger Professional line of aluminum dog boxes are designed to be the most secure and safest of the Zinger crates, and has a 90 Day “No Escape” Money Back Warranty to guarantee your dog will not be able to weasel a way out of this crate!

WHY BUY A ZINGER PROFESSIONAL DOG CRATE?

Heavy-Duty Aluminum Construction with Stainless Steel Hardware

Zinger crates are constructed from  aircraft-grade aluminum,  prized for its durability and strength, while still being light weight. Zinger Aluminum crates are ideal for dogs prone to destroying or breaking free of cheaper plastic and wire crates, which tend to easily crack, bend, and break. In addition, the the lock and mounting hardware are made from corrosion and rust resistant industrial-grade stainless steel.

Airline & Military Approved with Airline Travel Kit (IATA LAR CR-82 Compliant)

ZINGER™ crates exceed the strength and ventilation requirements by most airlines. The  Airline Travel Kit  is pre-installed and complies with  IATA LAR CR-82  rules to allow transportation of ALL dog breeds by air. The strong aluminum design will not bust or be broken by rough handling or shifting cargo loads and protects your dog while flying.  Airline Travel Kit  comes with every Zinger Professional Airline Compliant Dog Crate.

Each kit includes air travel rails, carrying handles, “Live Animal” labels, water and food bowls, ID Tag plus lock and deadbolt covers for extra security. What is the IATA 82 Standard? IATA stands for “International Air Transport Association”. This organization has compiled a checklist of crate requirements that are referred to as the IATA 82 standard. Most airlines require animals to be shipped in a crate that is “IATA 82” approved. This essentially means the crate must adhere to a certain level of strength and safety before it can be used to ship an animal by air. All ZINGER™ crates exceed the requirements of the IATA 82 standard when our optional " Airline Travel Kit” is attached. Our aluminum crates will not bust or be broken by rough handling or shifting cargo loads thereby safe guarding your dog on route. When you ship your dog in a Zinger crate he is protected. Important: Depending on the dog breed an airline may demand special requirements in addition to the IATA 82 standard so make sure to check with your airline. One of the most important considerations to remember when selecting your crate is its SIZE. Your crate must be large enough to ensure that the dog can stand up and have sufficient space to turn around. It must be able to do so without difficulty. Airlines have the right to refuse to fly your dog if the crate is deemed to be too small so be prepared and know your obligations before you arrive at the airport.

Safe & Comfortable

A Zinger crate is fully vented down each side and along the back wall to provide maximum comfort for your dog. The open design allows air to pass freely thru the door aided by the triple rows of lower and upper vent holes which surround the crate. By its very nature aluminum quickly dissipates heat making it an ideal material for a dog crate. Lots of adequate ventilation ensures your dog will remain safe and comfortable while in the Zinger crate.

Versatile & Easy to Handle

All Zinger crates have a modular design and can be coupled side by side or stacked atop one another to form multiple dog crate systems or kennel banks. Also, while built to be strong and secure, Zinger crates are one third the weight of steel and can easily be handled by one person, with little effort.

Exquisite Powder Coat Finish

Zinger crates are finished in a durable “Silver Hammertone” powder coat both inside and out. The secret to this tough finish is the high temperatures in which it is "baked on" so that it will not wear off. By powder coating the inside as well as the outside it protects your dogs coat from discoloration. Coat discoloration is common when a dog sits in an untreated aluminum crate. The bare aluminum oxidizes and the residue rubs off onto the dog resulting in a grey silvery color.  This will not happen in a Zinger crate.

Secure Inside and Out

From the inside, the crate is strengthened with solid bars and welded for extra strength the door is built to hold your "Escape Artist". A full length piano hinge and striker plate is standard and the door can be easily reversed to allow for left and right hand opening.

From the outside, each door comes with a flush mounted slam latch which is keyed for added security while you are away from the crate. Rest assured that someone cannot simply open the crate and walk away with your dog. Made from strong "stainless steel" for durability and to prevent corrosion.
