More about italy.

As a treasure trove of artistic and historical wonders, Italy offers timeless beauty and cultural richness. In the central Tuscany region, the streets of Florence are filled with Renaissance architecture, with a skyline dominated by the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, a Gothic art masterpiece. Within the northern Lombardy region, the fashion mecca, Milan, offers an abundance of art galleries and museums, with the most sought-after sight being The Last Supper, a mural painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Bordering the Tyrrhenian Sea in the central Lazio region, Rome is home to the ancient Colosseum, an amphitheater that played host to gladiatorial games, and the Pantheon, a former Roman temple. Perched atop cliffs that overlook the Bay of Naples in the southwestern Campania region, the coastal town of Sorrento is known for its lemon groves, notably some of the best lemons in Italy, they are used to produce the splendor that is Limoncello, a lemon-flavored Italian liqueur. Take a gondola ride through the romantic canals of Venice to explore one of the most unique cities in the world, built on more than 100 islands in the northeastern Veneto region. Savor the sweet symphony of Italy's gastronomic legacy and culinary mastery that spans centuries, with authentic Italian gelato, pasta, and pizza.

Italy tours by region.

From the canals of Venice to the hills of Tuscany, explore the land of la dolce vita on a guided tour. Italy has something for everyone, relaxing days by the ocean on the Isle of Capri, shopping for Armani in the fashion mecca of Milan, the romantic canals and rose-hued light of Venice, Juliet’s balcony in Verona, the faith and museums of Vatican City, Rome’s cafes and the famous Trevi Fountain, the history of the Roman Forum and Colosseum. And then there are the fantastic cuisines, wines, and traditions you’ll encounter across the different regions of Italy. With so many things to do in Italy, it’s no wonder it’s the most popular travel destination in the world. Whether it's your first time traveling to Italy, or your fifth, there's always something new and wonderful to experience.

Can't decide which Italian cities you want to visit? Read our roundup of Italy tours and the best places to visit in Italy to help narrow down your search.

Central Italy

Begin your Italy vacation in the eternal city of Rome . With iconic sites like the Colosseum ,  Roman Forum, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain , and the Pantheon, plus Vatican City right next door, Rome is the perfect first stop on a tour of Italy .

Florence & Tuscany

Discover the artistic hub that is Florence . Some of the best things to do in Florence are to see Michelangelo’s David statue, among other Renaissance masterpieces, cross the Ponte Vecchio, relax in the Piazza Della Signoria, and climb the Duomo di Firenze. Elsewhere in Tuscany, you can savor Chianti wine, visit Siena and the famous Piazza del Campo, and pose in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Northern Italy

Relax in the beautiful Italian Lakes District, cruising Lake Como to see the famous white peacocks of Isola Bella. Head to Cinque Terre to see the gorgeous multicolored, cliff-hugging houses overlooking the blue sea below. In the fashion capital, Milan, admire La Scala Opera House , the Milan Cathedral, and Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” before perusing the boutiques of Galleria Vittoria Emanuele II. And don’t miss out on a chance to see Juliet’s famous balcony in Shakespeare’s Verona.

East Italy & The Adriatic Coast

Cruise along the Grand Canal of Venice , the ‘Queen of the Adriatic,’ and visit St. Mark’s Square , the stunning Doge’s Palace, and Bridge of Sighs . And don’t miss a traditional glass-blowing demonstration in Murano! Travel southeast to the orange and olive groves of the region of Puglia and its most spectacular town, Alberobello, to explore the small, white-washed stone houses known as Trulli. Visit Matera, the biblical backdrop for the film ‘The Passion of the Christ,’ for exploration of the Sassi — a labyrinth of cave dwellings, churches, staircases, and arches, hewn out of solid rock.

Southern Italy & Sicily

Take your Italy tours south to Pompeii, a city frozen in time. Journey on to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast for sunshine, alluring turquoise waters, and cliffside lemon groves. Or, take a boat ride to stylish Capri , the Isle of Dreams. Delve into the rich history of Sicily in Taormina , Palermo, and Syracuse while watching the sunrise over Mount Etna.

Frequently Asked Questions About Italy Tours

  • When is the best time to tour Italy? There’s never a bad time to visit Italy. There’s something special about each season. Though, we think the best time to tour Italy is in Fall (or Autumn). It “falls” directly after peak season, and it is very similar to visiting in the Spring as there are fewer crowds of people and more days of fantastic weather.
  • What are the best places to visit in Italy? This answer depends on what you’re specifically looking for in a vacation. If it’s your first time, we suggest focusing on an itinerary that features the best of Italy and visiting the major cities of Florence , Rome, and Venice. If you’re looking to explore an area in more depth, then visiting Umbria and Tuscany , Puglia and the Neapolitan Riviera, or even the whole Southern Region with Sicily is a good call. We say there’s something for everyone, during any season, in Italy, making it a great destination. You’ve got the history of Rome and Vatican City, the art of Florence, the canals and gondoliers of Venice, the wines of Tuscany, and some of the best food and wine you’ve ever had no matter where you are in the country.
  • How many days should I spend in Italy? If you can, stay as long as possible, Italy is amazing. Though, traveling Italy for at least seven days is recommended to experience Italy to the fullest. However, if you’re traveling for less than a week or on a tour of Europe that travels through Italy, you will still be able to experience much of the beauty and splendor Italy has to offer.

It’s essential to ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after you’re planning to return to the states and that you have any visas you’ll need to travel. Planning earlier allows you plenty of time to renew your passport or apply for a visa if required. Travel rules are changing daily. If unsure, ask your Travel Specialist or find out more with our simple destination guide .

Why Should You Visit Italy?

The reasons to travel to Italy are unending. With such a rich history, amazing landmarks, captivating scenery, traditional cuisine, and hospitality, you can’t go wrong planning to visit Italy.

Our tour guide Nancy had a very heavy accent. Quite difficult to understand. And difficult to communicate clearly. Other than that the trip was amazing. Plenty of time to explore on our own and excellent guidance to make the most of our time in each location.

Best of Italy (Summer, 13 Days)

Good trip. My only concern was how you itemize the trip overview. You say 13 days and on the 13th day you write trip ends. It might help to include DEPART on day 13. I didn'r realize and booked flights trhe next day. Had to stay another day.

Local Living Italy—Sorrento

We enjoyed the range of activities. The tour of Naples had a local guide who provided knowledge specific to the history and people. The tour of Pompei also had a guide with detailed knowledge. Anna was our guide for the rest of the week. It was a full programme but wasn't too much. There were highlights one of which was Capri. Another was The Walk of the Gods. Breakfast was a great gathering occasion to talk amongst ourselves, discuss the days options and swap information gathered about the day. Dinner was always good food and good times enjoyed along the length of the table. Our room and bathroom was very comfortable with effective aircon and space to spread out. Luigi gave us a tour of the lemon farm and explained the methods and routines. He also demonstrated how to make limoncello. The organisation of the accommodation was faultless with, in my experience, any request willingly provided. The property had an efficient method for us to track our additional costs (wine and laundry) for which we paid for at the end. It was a friendly family run business. Everybody seemed to enjoy each other. The views from this property are tremendous especially from the terrace. It is quiet and peaceful, a short distance from Sorrento. Additional transport was available on our free day when we went in different directions and there's a bus stop at the end of the driveway. Anna provided local knowledge of Sorrento, for example good restaurants for lunch and where to swim. My husband and I enjoyed this tour very much. There was a great range of ages. English was the first language for us all. Anna's and the family"s knowledge of English was very good.

Walking the Amalfi Coast

The walking tour was challenging in a good way. ur stay at Hotel Due Torri was an amazing experience and a brilliant introduction to italian culture, food and way of life, as well as relaxing by the pool after each day's walk. Our guide Paulo was the best, so informative and knowledgeable and patient and encouraging.

We loved our Sicily tour!!! We had a wonderful guide, Luca who was helpful even beyond our time with him as we left Sicily and moved on to mainland Italy. The accommodations were good and the food delish! We will be using them again!

Classical Italy Tour

Classical Italy

Good value for the money, however there are few areas that could use improvement. Optional excursions were published too late, by the published dates we have already added extra nights and accommodation's so could not take advantage of them. With hotels about 30 mins outside of tourist area, some kind of shuttle should have been provided- not everyone can 'survive' sunrise to sunset on the go and taxi in IT are expensive and unreliable. The common areas of hotels were nice, however the rooms (mainly shower and carpets) could really really use a good scrub down. Having said that, Gabbi, our chaperon during the trip was great, super informative and helpful-- having a link for tips after the trip would help as at the end of the trip exhaustion kicks in and remembering tipping it is hard.

What people love about Italy Tours in Spring

Tour really amizing, the driver and tour guid, food and location was very good, but a first day and last day hotel accomodation is not good very small shower, the bed is like rocking, the last tour scheduled from vasilica to collesium there no travelling car and is not good for us to take a taxi by our own and some a taxi driver is not honest.
Overall good, seemed a bit rushed with not enough time to absorb the sites.
Carla was very kind and helpful on our tour

Tours of Italy by Travel Style

Portofino, Italy

Summer is the most crowded and the warmest time of the year, so we typically recommend taking your trip to Italy in the shoulder season months of April, May, September , and October.

During these months in spring and fall, you can enjoy comfortable temperatures for city tours and sightseeing, expect fewer tourists, and experience seasonal festivals. In May and September, on either side of summer, the warm weather is fantastic for exploring the Italian coastline and famous islands like Sicily , Capri , and Ischia.

While these months are our favorites, Italy is a year-round destination, and summer and winter are wonderful for their own reasons. Whether traveling as a family to Rome in August or skiing in the Italian Alps in December, our guide on the best time to visit Italy can help you find the right month for your trip.

While there is a seemingly endless list of things to see and do, we recommend spending at least 10 days on a tour of Italy to experience the highlights.

10-day itineraries provide an excellent overview of Italy’s iconic destinations, including Rome, Florence, Tuscany, Venice, and the Amalfi Coast. That said, the longer you stay, the more you will experience, and our three-week itineraries are designed for travelers to explore as much of Italy as possible.

If you can only visit for a short time, our 7-day itineraries cover the essentials of Italy, or you can spend a few days in Italy’s capital city on a trip starting from Rome .

From northern Italy’s alpine summits to the central capital of Rome and sun-kissed southern coastlines, there is so much to explore from one region to the next.

Here are a few of the best places to visit in Italy :

  • Rome : Home to iconic highlights like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain, the Eternal City is the ideal city to visit in Italy for first-timers and an excellent destination to start or end a trip.
  • Florence : Gateway to the rolling Tuscan sunflower fields and famous for its Renaissance architecture, Florence, the region’s capital, is one of the most notable places in Italy.
  • Tuscany : Known for its enchanting vineyards, medieval villages, and golden sunsets, the Tuscan countryside offers phenomenal wine tasting and cultural highlights to experience on your trip.
  • Venice : Sail the canals by gondola, see landmarks like Saint Mark's Basilica, and savor the local Venetian delicacies when experiencing the history, culture, and romance of the Floating City.
  • Amalfi Coast : Home to charming pastel-colored towns clinging to the cliffs, you can admire dramatic coastal views as you explore historic neighborhoods of the Amalfi Coast. This stunning stretch of steep, rocky coastline is one of the most scenic places in Italy.

From day trips to the Vatican City to Venetian gondola rides, Tuscan wine tasting, and pizza-making classes in Naples, here are some of the top things to do in Italy :

  • Explore the art, architecture, and museums of the Vatican City
  • Cruise the Floating City of Venice by gondola
  • Discover Italy’s regional cuisines, from Neapolitan pizza in Naples to authentic bolognese in Bologna
  • Sail between Italy’s top islands
  • Visit the famous Italian ruins and UNESCO sites
  • Taste the fine local varietals and blends of the Tuscan wine country

Whether touring top UNESCO sites or admiring the historic ruins , there are many famous landmarks and attractions to see on your Italy trip. Here are some favorites to explore:
