Gris is a visual masterpiece. It’s a living watercolour illustration that explores the complex themes of loss and grief through a visually arresting world and affecting orchestral score. At first glance, Gris looks to be a fitting bookend to a year that started with Celeste - a game that married an exploration of mental illness with incredible platforming gameplay, but ultimately its basic level design and many minor frustrations make its exceptional qualities feel only skin deep.

Gris is, at times, a meditative, affecting exploration of complex emotions that uses its levels as a canvas for some of the most beautiful visual design in any platformer, backed by a fantastic score. At others, it’s a maddeningly simple and confusing game that lets its artistic ambitions run roughshod over its gameplay.

Gris and Journey, two artful indies that found a mobile home

For those looking for a visually stunning game for their iOS device you may look no further than these two suggestions. Journey has recently landed on the iOS with another indie darling Gris soon to follow.

Journey originally released on the Playstation 3 in 2012 to incredible acclaim. It’s a game that received generous recognition on the way it told it’s story through players’ exploration of the world, as opposed to narrative and text. It has an enchanting soundtrack and gorgeous graphics to boot as you’re uncovering it’s sandy land.

The game, developed by indie studio  thatgamecompany , has won over 100 awards since its release, including Game of the Year at the 16th Annual D.I.C.E Awards. Journey’s soundtrack even received a grammy nomination in 2013. You can purchase Journey now on the iOS App Store for $7.99(AUD). Journey also recently released on PC. Meanwhile, also on the iOS App Store is the developer’s other recent game,  Sky .

Also on offer is 2018’s Gris, which has recently been announced to be making it’s way to the iOS store as well. Gris is a beautifully water colored indie game in which players play as a girl named Gray. The game explores issues of sorrow and grief very well, and as you play Gray must learn to not only get her voice back but colour the world around her once more. It’s a puzzle platformer and is 2D compared to Journey’s 3D world, but that doesn’t mean they both share similarities.

Gris also has a gorgeous art design that sets itself apart from the indie crowd while having a beautifully haunting soundtrack along with it. What’s better, the composer is also based in Berlin, much like the developer Nomada Studios. The team did an exceptional job and we reviewed the game quite favourably last year. Gris costs $7.99(AUD) on the iOS App Store to preorder and is due for release on August 22nd.

So, whether you’re looking for something new or looking for a reason to jump back into these gorgeous games, why not pick up Journey and Gris? It may very well be an apt reintroduction to mobile gaming.

Gris is a beautiful and tranquil platformer that relishes in the simple pleasure of exploring its enchanting world.

A week or so removed from playing Gris, I don't know what I'll remember it for, if at all. Gris feels like it almost belongs in a museum, with crowds marvelling at its art and sound for a few minutes, before moving on to something else. There's moments of beautiful brilliance in Gris, all of which is dragged down by a decidedly average platforming game.

For 2013, the Dodge Journey Crew trim boasts a stronger value proposition, as Dodge has added a few more standard features (such as leather upholstery and heated front seats) and reduced its price.

Vehicle overview

When it debuted four years ago, the Dodge Journey crossover didn't have much in its favor. We used the comment "Needs Improvement" so frequently on its report card that we were certain its fate as a back-of-the-class entry was sealed. Yet two years later it was more like "Most Improved" as the Journey underwent a complete under-the-skin makeover that put it on the honor roll. Yes, the 2013 Dodge Journey may look the same as that original '09, but they're as different as a scholar-athlete is from the class clown.

Always in its favor has been the Journey's interior versatility. Roomier than your typical compact crossover SUV, the more wagon-like Journey offers a small third-row seat that can accommodate a couple of small kids. That added flexibility, along with its reasonable dimensions, makes the Journey the just-right choice for an ideal family vehicle without the added cost, fuel appetite and parking hassles of the larger three-row crossovers.

Under the hood, it's a tale of two engines -- one desirable and one not. The base four-cylinder is underpowered and its fuel economy isn't that great. The 3.6-liter V6, on the other hand, is one of the most potent engines in this segment, yet it still provides decent fuel economy. Underway, the Journey boasts composed handling and a supple ride, while inside is a stylish cabin fitted with high-quality materials and stocked with user-friendly high-tech features. Other attributes include hidden storage compartments and optional integrated child seats.

Thanks to its well-rounded nature, the 2013 Dodge Journey earns our approval. Of course, there are other impressive choices available as well. We also like the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento ; both boast a small but usable third-row seat, better four-cylinder performance and available V6 engines. If a third row isn't a priority, models like the Ford Escape or Honda CR-V are also excellent. But overall the Journey is a respectable pick for a small crossover, particularly with the optional V6.

2013 Dodge Journey models

The 2013 Dodge Journey is available in five- and seven-passenger configurations. It is available in American Value Package (AVP), SE, SXT, R/T and Crew trim levels.

The American Value Package comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, dual-zone manual climate control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a sliding and reclining second-row seat and a six-speaker sound system with a compact touchscreen interface, a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface.

The SE adds privacy tinted glass, side roof rails and LED taillights.

Moving up to the SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels, foglamps, unique front/rear fascias, a cargo cover/net and satellite radio. A premium sound system, sunroof and 19-inch wheels are optional.

The Crew adds a V6 engine, remote start, 19-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a six-way power driver seat (with four-way lumbar adjustment), dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 115-volt power outlet, a premium audio system, Bluetooth and a fold-flat front passenger seat (with hidden storage bin).

The R/T includes all the Crew features (minus the roof rails) and adds a monochrome exterior treatment, special 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension and black perforated-leather upholstery with red stitching.

Some of the higher trim's features are available on the lower trims via option packages, while other available features (depending on trim) include rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, a folding/reclining third-row seat, three-zone automatic climate control (with rear air-conditioning), integrated second-row child booster seats, a rear seat entertainment system and a navigation system with an 8.4-inch display.

Performance & mpg

The 2013 Dodge Journey AVP, SE and SXT are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. Its EPA-estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined – not great given its anemic acceleration and thriftier competitors.

Optional on the SXT and standard on the Crew and R/T is a 3.6-liter V6. It's good for 283 hp and 260 lb-ft and is matched to a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional. At the track we recorded a 7.5-second 0-60-mph time for a Journey V6 FWD, an average time for the class. Fuel economy stands at 17/25/20 with front-wheel drive and 16/24/19 with all-wheel drive; both are a little below average for V6-powered small crossovers.

Every 2013 Dodge Journey comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Integrated second-row child booster seats are optional on every Journey. In Edmunds brake testing, a Journey V6 FWD came to a stop from 60 mph in 121 feet, an average performance for its segment.

In government crash tests, the Journey received four out of five stars for overall crash protection, with four stars awarded for frontal-impact protection and five stars for side-impact protection. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Journey received the top score of "Good" in the frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength tests.

The 2013 Dodge Journey's four-cylinder engine just doesn't have enough power to get this heavy crossover moving. It also doesn't provide enough fuel economy to justify its lackluster performance. As such, we'd avoid it and step up to the 3.6-liter V6. This engine is used throughout the Chrysler/Dodge lineups, and for good reason: It offers smooth, robust power and decent fuel economy. Unfortunately, its six-speed automatic transmission can be slow to respond when a downshift (or two) is needed.

On the move, the Journey is competent for the class, with a smooth ride and secure handling. The latter feels especially confident, boasting precise steering with a light yet still nicely weighted feel to it. That said, a Ford Escape or Honda CR-V likely will feel more agile around town, while the Chevy Equinox provides an even more comfortable and quiet ride on the freeway.

From both design and execution standpoints, the Journey's interior rates as one of the best in the segment. The materials are high in quality, the design is clean and modern and the up-to-the-minute technology is pretty easy to use. We especially like the extra-large touchscreen interface available on most models.

Other strengths for the Journey include its clever storage bins and available integrated child seats that make it decidedly family-friendly. Also helping that cause is a versatile seating arrangement. While the Dodge's sliding and reclining second-row seat is now the norm for this class, its optional third-row seat is not. Like the one in the Toyota RAV4, this seat is far from adult-friendly, but if you need to take a couple extra kids to a T-ball game, it should come in handy.

In terms of hauling cargo, the Journey offers a total capacity of 68 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. That's a few cubes smaller than the RAV4 and CR-V, but bigger than the Chevy Equinox. For smaller items, the Journey provides storage bins hidden under the second-row floor as well as under the passenger seat.

In this game, you are a wandering artist discovering Eastshade Island. You can use your artist’s easel to capture the world on canvas.

On the island, you can ask the locals about their life to learn more about them, meet new people, and assist the less fortunate. By talking to the locals, you can find out about the land’s mysteries and secrets.

You might have to overcome natural barriers to access remote locations, but it will be worth it. With time, you will discover the effects of your activities on the environment.

Eastshade is a character-rich adventure with a serene open world in which you can have fun exploring and talking to people. In order to discover mysteries and acquire goods in this game, you must work on your paintings.

To overcome difficulties and complete tasks, you will need to collect crafting supplies and schematics while traveling. Along this process, you will also meet new people through engaging chats and unlocked subjects.

It’s a truly unique experience, and if you like games like Journey, you’re sure to fall in love with this game as well. It’s beautiful.

Aspire: Ina’s Tale

As the title might suggest, this game follows the story of a character named Ina. After being detained, Ina was imprisoned within the Tower and forced to slumber.

However, she awakens abruptly at the beginning of the game. In order to find a way out and learn about her predicament, Ina must investigate the Tower’s rooms.

In this game, you will encounter intriguing personalities, solve clever puzzles, master platforming sequences, and travel through gorgeous environments.

Aspire: Ina’s Tale impressed me and is unquestionably among the top puzzle games I’ve played lately. The puzzles may not be the most inventive I have come across, but still, they are definitely difficult enough to be amusing without becoming frustrating.

The story is not the main selling point for this game. It is much more about how the mechanics and visuals match the whole idea of Ina’s Tale. That said, this game certainly is fun, immersive, and beautiful, so I couldn’t keep it out of the list. It’s one of the most unique puzzle games on Steam , for sure.

In the third-person combat-free game, you explore a mysteriously drowned metropolis and learn to appreciate the beauty of emptiness in wide outdoor settings. You take the role of Miku, a little girl who has taken her injured brother to the city in their little fishing boat.

Submerged is an exploration game where you must help Miku’s brother in the flooded city. The game is visually stunning, with a bright and colorful art style that makes the submerged city come to life. If you’re a fan of the art in games like Journey, you’ll love this post.

Use your boat to navigate the flooded streets, climb the submerged structures, and use your telescope to scout the city for the items you’ll need. You will come across the diverse ecosystem of this breathtaking place as you explore the city at your own speed and find hidden artifacts that reveal the tale of a world in ruin.

I found myself getting lost in the world of Submerged, forgetting I was playing a video game. It’s one of those games that are so good that playing it almost feels like being in another world.

This is a serene, free-to-play adventure game about sailing aboard a very special boat across gorgeous waters toward the sunset. Steering, logistics, crew member disappearances, capsizing, or even pirates won’t be a concern for you.

It’s a journey meant for you to sit back and relax, not to spend brain power on important decisions. Becalm’s variety of biomes is significant, and they are all vivid and dreamlike. Exploring them with the first-person perspective helps them feel more immersive.

Becalm also has field-recorded ocean soundscapes that accompany an outstanding synthesizer ensemble. Your adventure will be random each time you play.

There really isn’t much to say about this game besides the obvious. This game was meant to relax you, not to challenge you. Even the name of the game, Becalm, is very clear about the game’s goals.

This is not a bad thing, though. Video games are evolving and becoming way more than just mindless fun. This is great, since niche video games like Becalm might actually be very helpful for those who need to relax and can’t be overstimulated.

Areia: Pathway to Dawn

Areia: Pathway to Dawn might be the closest thing to Journey in this list. This game is a wonderful 3D journey through the various phases of awareness, offering a soothing experience with original gameplay.

In this game, you will make pathways and resolve challenges using simple mechanics. The game is beautiful, and there is a lot to see. There are many realms for you to venture into and delve into the unknown.

Chances are, you will get lost in the beauty of your existence and surroundings, in a similar fashion to Journey’s engrossing environments. If you want to discover the purpose of your existence in this game, you must gather the shards of your history, but you will have to travel over the sands in order to get them all.

2013 Dodge Journey Overview

A four-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission are standard in the 2013 Dodge Journey. A V6 engine paired with a six-speed automatic is available. Reviewers said the base powertrain is underpowered and most preferred the V6, which they said has ample power. With front-wheel drive and the standard powertrain, the 2013 Dodge Journey gets 19/26 mpg city/highway, which is a bit low for the class. Reviewers generally said the Journey has composed handling and a comfortable ride.

The 2013 Dodge Journey can seat up to seven people with its available third row, which is rare for a small SUV. The Journey also has available features like built-in child booster seats, which help boost its family-friendly credibility. However, test drivers said that the third row is best left to children and complained that the base infotainment system can be tricky to use and has a small touch screen. Critics noted that space in the first two rows is fine for adults and that the available infotainment system with the larger touch-screen system works well. Standard features include a 4.3-inch touch-screen infotainment system with USB and auxiliary ports. Features like Bluetooth, a rear-seat entertainment system, leather upholstery, rear parking sensors, navigation, a rearview camera and an infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touch screen are available. The Journey’s overall cargo space is typical for the class.

Other SUVs to Consider

Reviewers said the 2013 Honda CR-V has the livability and practicality that most compact SUV buyers are looking for, and it has among the most overall cargo space in the class. It also comes standard with Bluetooth and a rearview camera, both of which are not standard in the Journey.

The Dodge Journey is large for a compact SUV and so is the 2013 GMC Terrain . The base Terrain gets better fuel economy than the base Journey does, and although it isn’t available with a third row, test drivers were pleased with its spacious, sliding rear seats, and it also has more standard features than the Journey.

Sexual Assault of Migrants in Panama Rises to Level Rarely Seen Outside War

The girl, 8, from Venezuela, had slept fitfully the night before, wailing in her dreams, her mother said, about the men trying to kill her.

Days earlier, the family had entered the Darién Gap, the jungle straddling Colombia and Panama that in the last three years has become one of the world’s busiest migrant highways. After climbing mountains and crisscrossing rivers in their quest to reach the United States, their group was accosted by a half-dozen men in ski masks, holding long guns and issuing threats.

“Women, take off your clothes!” the assailants shouted, the mother said, before they probed each woman’s intimate parts looking for cash.

Sons, brothers and husbands were forced to watch. Then the men turned to the girl, her mother said, ordering her to undress for a search, too.

Assault, robbery and rape have long been a grim risk of migrant journeys around the globe. But aid groups working in the Darién Gap say that in the past six months they have documented an extraordinary spike in attacks, with patterns and frequencies rarely seen outside of war zones.

Nearly all the attacks, they say, are happening on the Panamanian side of the jungle.

Long-established aid groups, including Doctors Without Borders and UNICEF, with experience working in conflicts, say the attacks are organized and exceptionally cruel. Perpetrators beat victims and take food, even baby formula, leaving people battered and starving in the forest.

And the assaults often involve cases in which dozens of women are violated in a single event.

In January and February, Doctors Without Borders recorded 328 reports of sexual violence, compared with 676 in all of 2023. This year, 113 came in a single week in February.

“The level of brutality is extreme,” said Luis Eguiluz, the organization’s director in Colombia and Panama.

Several humanitarian organizations, including Human Rights Watch , accuse Panama’s border police, which is charged with security in the jungle and has officers patrolling the forest, of failing to protect migrants and allowing perpetrators to commit crimes with impunity.

These accusations come as top Panamanian officials voice growing frustration with the financial and environmental cost that migration has inflicted on the small nation, and amid growing calls among political leaders — including candidates in an upcoming presidential election — to halt the flow of people.

Two reporters for The New York Times captured a snapshot of the violence in March, speaking with more than 70 people during a four-day period who said they had been robbed by clusters of armed men in the jungle.

Of those interviewed, 14 were women who said they had been sexually violated, ranging from forcible touching to rape.

“They do all kinds of evil to you,” said one woman, 40, a mother of six who had been living in Chile. She was surrounded by a half-dozen masked men and raped, she said, after the group she was traveling with left her alone in the jungle. (The Times is withholding the names of people who say they had been victims of sexual violence to protect their privacy.)

Panama’s top security official, Juan Manuel Pino, whose ministry oversees the 5,000-person border police, known as Senafront, declined repeated requests for an interview.

Speaking at a public event, Edgar Pitti, the top Senafront official in the Darién, said officers were doing all they could to protect migrants, considering the jungle’s challenging terrain.

“It’s important to understand the geographic context,” he said.

Several Panamanian officials said the problem was not as serious as described by aid groups and migrants.

The prosecutor charged with leading investigations into organized crime, Emeldo Márquez, insisted in an interview that sexual violence on the migrant route in his country “has gone down.”

But data from his office shows investigators opened 17 cases into sexual assault on the Panamanian side of the jungle in 2023, and 14 so far this year. Mr. Márquez explained that for some of this year’s cases he was still verifying claims by victims.

The director of the country’s National Migration Service, Samira Gozaine, expressed skepticism recently in a post on the platform X about the data provided by Doctors Without Borders.

“It is easy to say people here are raped every day,” she said . “Where is the evidence?”

Ms. Gozaine declined a request for an interview.

Until recently, Doctors Without Borders was the primary nonprofit providing health care to migrants at the end of the Darién route, with 67 staff serving roughly 5,000 people a month, the organization said. It was also the main group collecting testimony of sexual assault claims.

But in early March, following the organization’s repeated public statements about violence against migrants, Panama ordered Doctors Without Borders to suspend operations.

The country’s health minister, Luis Fernando Sucre, said in an interview with The Times that the medical group had not complied with local regulations, including reporting the names of sexual assault victims to the government to help with investigations.

The suspension order, he said, was not in retaliation for the group’s reports about attacks in the jungle.

But Ms. Gozaine also accused the organization and other “international bodies” of directing migrants into Panama by providing information about the route, contributing to the country’s problems.

Doctors Without Borders declined to comment.

The 8-year-old girl from Venezuela had been in third grade when her parents decided to leave for the United States. With dark curly hair and a love for animals, she said she wanted to be a veterinarian when she grew up.

Her mother, age 35, said their family left Venezuela after they were threatened by supporters of President Nicolás Maduro, whom they had refused to support. They moved to Colombia, where her husband delivered groceries, making less than the minimum monthly wage of about $300. With their two children they eventually decided to follow hundreds of thousands of other Venezuelans on a now well-trodden path north.

During the attack in early March, the mother said, masked men patrolled a line of terrified people.

A woman who refused to take off her clothes was yanked violently by her hair, she added.

The mother said she was beaten, and then, naked, searched between her legs, a man probing with his fingers, demanding money.

When they turned to her daughter, they threatened to kill the girl if she did not undress.

“Mami,” she recalled her daughter shouting, “I’ll take off my clothes! I don’t want to die.”

The men did not touch the girl, her mother said, and after they were sure she had no money, left quickly.

Other survivors recounted stories of nearly identical attacks, saying the assaults often happened a few hours’ hike past a Senafront camp inside the forest.

Last year, Panama arrested four people accused of sexual assault in the jungle, according to Mr. Márquez, who declined to say if there had been any arrests this year.

People crossing the Darién in Panama must pass a stretch of the jungle that is home to communities of Kuna and Emberá Indigenous peoples. These communities have seen their livelihoods transformed by migration: Their water and land has been polluted by trash, but they also have new opportunities to make money selling food, boat transport and other services.

Dozens of victims, all of whom spoke Spanish, said the perpetrators spoke to each other in an Indigenous language. Some people said they were robbed multiple times, by men speaking an Indigenous language and, separately, by men speaking Spanish with a Colombian accent.

A representative of the Colombian police declined to comment on violence in the jungle.

In interviews, several Indigenous leaders said some perpetrators might come from their villages, and urged the Panamanian border police to investigate.

Tulio Rosales, a leader in the Emberá village of Villa Caleta, called on the border police to “put more force” into migrant protection.

A 29-year-old woman from Venezuela left with her partner and four children, fleeing poverty. They had been walking roughly 12 hours a day when armed men stopped them, she said.

The woman’s partner was allowed to move on with the children, but the woman was forced to stay behind and undress. She wept as she described how one of the masked men placed his fingers inside each of the roughly 16 women who remained, searching for money, she said.

Afterward, she fled in a panic, forgetting the family’s food.

Then her group was accosted a second time, this time while they slept. Again a group of masked men forced some people to strip naked and hand over cash. This time, the woman said, she had nothing left to give.

As crises around the world have pushed a record number of people from their homes, the Darién jungle — which must be traversed to reach the United States from South America by foot — has become an unforgiving rite of passage for those seeking new lives.

More than 520,000 people crossed this stretch last year, more than twice the year before, which has helped fuel the historic number of arrivals at the U.S. border.

This year, Darién crossings in January, February and March were up nearly 25 percent compared to the same period in 2023, according to Panamanian authorities , with most people coming from Venezuela, Ecuador, Haiti and Colombia.

Panama, a nation of just over four million people, has seen a million migrants pass through in just three years. Ms. Gozaine, the director of the National Migration Service, says this tide of people has cost the country $70 million, including money spent on lodging and food at government-run camps at the end of the jungle.

The government’s goal, Ms. Gozaine has said, is to provide migrants a “dignified” experience in her country.

But as frustration among Panamanian officials has grown, the country’s security officials have deepened ties to several right-wing influencers who have become popular in the United States by portraying migrants as potential criminals and aid groups as profiteers encouraging their journey .

Some influencers have toured the Darién Gap with the border police. Oscar Ramirez, a correspondent for Real America’s Voice, which also hosts Steve Bannon’s show, was invited in February to address hundreds of Panamanian officials at a security conference in Panama City.

The accusations of sexual assault come as the Biden administration ramps up aid to Panama, which it has called a key partner in its efforts to control and halt the flow of people.

In the last three years, Washington has delivered nearly $40 million to help Panama deal with migration.

Asked at a recent event if the United States would urge Panama to do more to protect migrants, the U.S. Embassy’s second-in-command in Panama, John Barrett, declined to answer, saying simply that he understood that there was a “humanitarian situation” in the jungle.

The mother of the 8-year-old said that on the day the family was attacked, perpetrators took the last of their savings: $280.

“They stole my daughter’s innocence,” she said of the attack in the Darién. “I can stand anything, but she cannot.”

Eventually, the family made it to southern Mexico. There, the mother said in audio message from a friend’s cellphone, the family was kidnapped and held for two days in a cockfighting arena.

The mother was again forced to strip naked and searched for valuables, she said.

Once released, the family sold candies in the street, planning to use their earnings to try and continue north.
