Most travelers haven’t heard of Kastamonu (Turkey) or know very little about the city, but that’s no surprise — Kastamonu is one of the Black Sea region’s best-kept secrets . 

Even better, Kastamonu has everything you need as a tourist destination, but without the tourists! The city is well-known for its delicious cuisine , including its famous pastirma, Çekme Helva, and meat-stuffed bread (but more about that on our Where to Eat in Kastamonu section!). It’s also home to hundreds of beautifully-preserved Ottoman houses (like those in Safranbolu) yet with much less crowds. Finally, Kastamonu has a small-town atmosphere but with a big heart — and you’ll be glad you visited this charming city once your trip is over!

🍖 Kastamonu Pastırma : Kastamonu is renowned for its delicious pastrami that the mere mention of this culinary treasure instantly makes locals think of Kastamonu the minute they hear the word pastırma . The city’s unique pastrami-making tradition has been perfected over generations, resulting in a distinctive flavor and texture that is truly unforgettable.

🏰 Kastamonu Castle : Standing as a testament to Kastamonu’s rich history (and architecture skills), Kastamonu Castle is a must-visit historical landmark. This imposing fortress has witnessed centuries of events and offers panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. 

🪞 Beautiful Ottoman-era houses : Speaking of architecture, Kastamonu also has more than 400 beautifully-preserved Ottoman-era mansions scattered all around the city! These houses showcase intricate woodwork, and taking a leisurely stroll through streets lined with these charming houses is like stepping into a living museum.

How many days do you need in Kastamonu?

If you’re on a short schedule, you can see Kastamonu in one day as long as you plan your trip in advance. For example, you can visit the city’s main museums in the morning, enjoy some local food at a place like Penbe Han for lunch, go shopping for souvenirs at the bazaar, and climb up to Kastamonu Castle during sundown. 

If you have a few days, you can also add on a day trip to the ancient site of Pompeiopolis (42 km by car), see Valla Canyon (115 km) via observation deck, or chill out on a beach in İnebolu (90 km). 

Kastamonu regional specialties

Pastırma — The most famous food in Kastamonu is none other than pastirma! This is a traditional Turkish cured meat product that’s prepared by seasoning beef with a mixture of salt, garlic, and various spices, then air-drying it to achieve its distinct flavor and texture. Interestingly, the name pastırma comes from the Turkish word bastırmak, which means ‘to press’ (which is the third step – the meat is seasoned and pressed up to 16 hours before drying). 

Etli Ekmek — A gozleme-style bread with pieces of pastrami baked inside. 

Banduma — A Black Sea classic. Pieces of boiled chicken are placed on lavash-style bread and topped with sauce and crushed nuts. It’s a very cozy dish that’s much more delicious than what we just wrote (you have to try it!) 

Çekme Helva — The most famous dessert of Kastamonu and a recipe that’s hundreds of years old! While the ingredients are very simple (flour, sugar, butter, lemon, water), it’s very addictive and a must-buy souvenir! Sepetçioğlu is one of the best places to buy some. 

Elma Eğşisi — A refreshing cold drink that’s local to Kastamonu. Local wild apples are boiled and strained, then made into a thick drink. You can also find jars of Elma Eğşisi sauce sold in stores around Kastamonu — just take a bit of the sauce, dilute it with water, and you have your own drink. 🙂 

If you’re looking to try authentic Kastamonu food, we recommend eating at Penbe Han. The building itself is a traditional caravan built in the late 1400s, and was used as a trading center for honey and cotton (the word penbe is Persian for cotton ). Nowadays, the restaurant is famous for having an entire menu of traditional Kastamonu dishes like etli ekmek, banduma, elma eğşisi, and much more. Other excellent options include Cem Sultan Bedesten , Münire Sultan Table , and Eflanili Konağı (which is a traditional Ottoman house converted into a restaurant!)

How to Get to Kastamonu

By Airplane — Kastamonu has its own airport — Kastamonu Airport, or KFS for short, and there are direct flights from Istanbul’s domestic Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) and international Istanbul Airport (IST). 

We recommend researching prices beforehand and comparing airports, as you can often get a better deal if you fly from SAW airport. You can also try your luck and fly into Ankara Airport (ESB) and take a bus from there. 

By Bus — Kastamonu is serviced by dozens of bus routes, from local Black Sea cities like Sinop, Safranbolu, Zonguldak, and Samsun, as well as major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, and so on. To avoid very long bus journeys (Izmir to Kastamonu is a whopping 16-hour ride!), we recommend either flying into Kastamonu Airport (see above) or flying to Ankara and taking the 4.5-hour bus from Ankara to Kastamonu instead.

Getting Around Kastamonu

While Kastamonu’s center measures about 6 kilometers (3.7 mi), most of Kastamonu’s tourist attractions are conveniently located within walking distance. 

If you’re arriving by bus, it’s about a 9 kilometer / 12 minute taxi ride from the main bus station to the city center. Likewise, you can find plenty of taxi kiosks around the center — just type in “Kastamonu taksi durağı” in Google Maps for the nearest one. 

What to do in Kastamonu

Climb to the top of Kastamonu Castle

The most famous tourist attraction in Kastamonu is none other than its historical castle, which was built in the 12th century and is the highest point in the city. The outer walls were unfortunately damaged over the years, yet the inner castle has remained relatively well-preserved to this day.

While the hike up is a bit challenging due to the elevation (and a sloping path), the view of Kastamonu is worth it! We recommend visiting just before sunset for the best experience. Entrance is free.

See the Traditional Ottoman Mansions 

While Safranbolu may be the most popular city to see traditional Ottoman houses, Kastamonu is another excellent destination (without the tourist crowds!).

There are more than 400 or so Kastamonu Ottoman-era houses and mansions, with most being characterized by their signature overhanging second floor, intricate wooden details, and outlined windows. 

Some of the best-preserved Ottoman houses can be found in the Akmescit, Ismail Bey, and Hepkebirler (center) neighborhoods. 

See the Home Tombs

One of the most unique landmarks in Kastamonu are the Ev Kaya Mezarları, which literally translates to Home Rock Tombs. As you can guess from the name, the Home Tombs are rock-cut tombs that were carved into the rugged cliffs by Paphlagonians in the 7th century BC. In fact, they’re the oldest rock tombs in the province!

You can climb up to the tombs via the stairs (keep an eye out for an information board) and take a closer look inside. The Home Tombs don’t have a location marker on Google Maps, so click here for the coordinates .

Go People Watching at Nasrullah Square

Nasrullah Square, the heart of Kastamonu, is a bustling multi-level square where the past and present come together. Surrounded by traditional Ottoman-era buildings and the square’s namesake, Nasrullah Mosque (built in the 16h century!), the square is an excellent place to experience the local atmosphere. 

Enjoy some tea or Turkish coffee at one of the cafes, try the city’s famous pastrami or helva at Erdem Sepetçioğlu, or go souvenir shopping. Nasrullah Square is also an excellent place to take a lunch break, as many of the city’s landmarks are within walking distance. 

Learn Kastamonu’s History at the City Museum  

Discover Kastamonu’s vibrant past and unique cultural heritage at the Kastamonu City Museum, which was established as a “Documentation and Archive Center” in 2002 and renovated with new exhibits in 2018. The museum has four main themes, including Kastamonu’s geology and wildlife, archaeology/history, architecture, and culture/society. 

While the exhibits aren’t translated to English yet, you can easily spend one to two hours looking at all the interesting artifacts and reading their descriptions (just be sure to have Google Translate open!) Just behind the museum is the historical Kastamonu Clock Tower and a cafe with an excellent view of the city.

Where to stay in Kastamonu 

One of our favorite hotels during the trip! Besides being one of the top-rated hotels in Kastamonu, it’s run by a very nice and hospitable family 🙂

The hotel has 20 rooms in total (16 standard + 4 family rooms), which are comfortable and very spacious. As a cute little fun fact, each of the rooms is named after a city or town in Kastamonu’s province!

A simple yet filling Turkish-style breakfast plate was included. The hotel is located on a quiet street and just a short 5-minute walk to the city center, and there’s street parking in front of the hotel (valet) as well as a free and very spacious parking lot across the hotel.

Kastamonu is a city in the Western Karadeniz Region of Turkey. It's 92 km from the Black Sea coast at an altitude of 900 m, and in 2021 had a population of 125,622.

Understand [ edit ]

The town may have been founded in the 18th century BC; the Greeks and Romans called it Timonion (Τιμόνιον). It controlled one of the valleys to the Black Sea coast and in the 10th century was fortified by Manuel Erotikos Komnenos (circa 955-1020), so it was dubbed "Kastra Komnenon" hence Kastamonu.

From the 13th to 15th century, Kastamonu was the capital of the Candaroğlu petty kingdom. The Ottomans were already a power in the land, but were almost destroyed by Mongol / Timurid invasion. Thus it was only in 1461 that they'd recovered enough to vanquish the Candaroğlu on their road to establishing an empire on three continents. Kastamonu was thereafter a provincial capital untroubled by warfare. However in the Turkish War of Independence it was a supply hub: western navies embargoed the shipping lanes, but munitions were smuggled into the port of İnebolu then brought up to Kastamonu thence to the frontlines.

41.3153 33.7995 1 Kastamonu Airport ( KFS  IATA ) is 12 km south of the city and most days has a flight from Istanbul (IST) by Turkish Airlines, taking 75 min. You'll need a taxi to get downtown.

By bus [ edit ]

Buses from Istanbul run every 2-3 hours and take 8-9 hours via Gebze , Bolu and Safranbolu , usually continuing via Boyabat to Sinop or Samsun on the coast.

From Ankara six buses a day take four hours. Bus lines on these routes are Metro Turizm and Flixbus.

Local buses ply along the valley from Karabük, which is on the railway from Ankara to Zonguldak, and is close to Safranbolu.

By road [ edit ]

From Istanbul is 510 km: take O-4 / E80 (toll) east past Gerede, then D755 north to Karabük, then D030 east via Araç. The last stretch of road is winding, but is mostly a divided highway.

From Ankara is 240 km: go east on D140 to Kalecik, then north on D765 via Çankırı and Ilgaz . The last section is over the Ilgaz Mountains at 1800 m, so in winter consider the weather outlook. Satnav may try to bring you this way from Istanbul.

The main road follows both banks of the river bisecting the city, with one-way northbound traffic on the east bank and southbound on the west. Public buses ply this strip.

• Old town straggles along the valley both sides of the Karaçomak River. The southern sections have Ottoman half-timbered houses and stone mansions, plus ancient mosques, caravanserais and bazaars. But it's all a bit scrappy, as most buildings are ticky-tacky modern, and older buildings are often in poor condition, so you don't get the atmosphere of an "old quarter".

• 41.3772 33.7753 2 Nasrullah Mosque was built in 1506, and restored in later centuries.
• Nasrullah Bridge crosses the river east side of Nasrullah Mosque and was built about the same time. It's now a footbridge with two arches remaining; the outer three were clipped off in 1946 to avoid obstructing modern streets along the banks, giving it a lop-sided appearance.
• Aşir Efendi Hanı (aka Urgan Inn) is a caravanserai just west of Nasrullah Mosque, built in 1748. It's now occupied by small shops but is run-down.

• 41.4805 33.6879 9 Mahmut Bey Mosque is a remarkable wooden mosque built in 1366, in the village of Kasaba 17 km northwest of Kastamonu. No nails were used (hence its nickname Çivisiz Cami , "the nailless mosque"), so its elaborately carved pieces were cleverly slotted into position and the surfaces dyed. Kasaba is now a tiny place but was once a substantial town, a secondary seat of the Candaroğlu dynasty until they were ousted by the Ottomans, and right up to the 20th century its population exceeded 20,000. The mosque is one of five in Anatolia inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List ; it's generally accessible in daylight hours. To get here take the road towards Daday as far as Göçen, then follow the lane north for 3 km. A dolmuş would get you to Göçen.

• Hamams: Dede Sultan Hamamı at Atatürk Cd 41 was established in 1524 and is still in business. Others in old town are Çifte Hamam, Arabapazarı Hamam and Yeni (New) Hamam.
• Lunapark is a rusty crumbling amusement park at the north end of town. It's supposed to be open daily till midnight, but you'll probably find it closed.
• Dress to impress: it was in Kastamonu on 27 August 1925 that Atatürk made a famous speech banning the wearing of the fez and religious garb; he wore a panama for the occasion. He argued that such dress was not only backward, but it emphasised religious and cultural differences in what should be a unified secular republic. Civil servants and similar officials were thereupon required to wear modern hats, and when Atatürk got back to Ankara he passed a law. There were many protests, and a couple of dozen protesters were hanged, in a modern secular sort of way.

• Halva ( çekme helvası ) is for dessert, in cafes or sold loose.

Town gets booked out whenever the nearby military garrisons have public parades, as families from all over the country flock to see their conscripted sons looking smart and purposeful for the first time in their lives.

Kastamonu, located in the west of the Black Sea region , is one of the cities that can be visited in all seasons with its historical and natural beauties . Kastamonu, which started its history with the Hittite Empire , has been home to many civilizations . In terms of having an important place in Turkish history , Kastamonu has been an important place in Turkey’s war of independence in years 1920-1922 in the shipment of ammunition from Istanbul to Anatolia in a safe manner . After the proclamation of the Republic , Mustafa Kemal Atatürk explained the costume revolution in 1925 to Kastamonu.

Things to Do in Kastamonu

Kastamonu, which is known for its natural beauties as well as its historical beauties , has both historical and natural spots to be seen . Especially with its canyons and national park it is frequently visited by nature , hiking , picnic , camping and canyon hiking lovers .

Kastamonu Castle

Built on a 110-meter-high hill , the castle was built by the Kommens in the 12th century . Architectural traces of different periods can be seen on the castle , whose construction began at the end of the Middle Ages . There are 15 bastions and towers on the castle for security purposes . Inside the castle , there is a passage to take refuge against sieges and to supply the need for external supplies . The castle has been repaired and maintained in 2005 and gained a lot of visitors and touristic value .

Evkaya Tombs

The rock tombs in Kastamonu city cent re were formed by carving an 8-meter rock block . Although there is no certain information about the rock tombs , some sources state that it was built as an open – air temple in the early 7th century BC. Potnea Theron ( Goddess of Animals Judge ) is depicted on the front of the building . 

Küre Mountains National Park

Küre Mountains National Park, which has a wide area of 37 thousand hectares, is located in Bahçelievler neighbourhood of Azdavay district. There are canyons and caves in the park as well as areas for hiking, rock climbing and skiing. Küre Mountains National Park, which has a spectacular natural beauty has won PAN Park Certificate in 2012 with its management and environmental planning and thus became the 13th PAN Park in Europe and the first PAN Park of Turkey. Transportation to the Küre Mountains is provided by renting a car or by private vehicles.

Valla Canyon

Located within the borders of Küre Mountains, the natural wonder Valla canyon is 100 km away from Kastamonu and 26 km away from Pınarbaşı and is located within the boundaries of Muratbaşı village. With its high rocky cliffs between 800 and 1200 meters, Valla Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world and has a length of 12 km. In the canyon, there are natural waterfalls and ponds as well as trails for those who want to take pictures of nature, and there is also a track for rafting lovers. The canyon is very difficult to pass through and those without suitable equipment and without professional guides are not allowed to pass. 

Horma Canyon

Horma Canyon , which is 5 km away from Pınarbaşı district cent re , is one of the 6 canyons in Kastamonu. In the area where the canyon is located , there are specially designed natural walking areas and resting points . Zara creek passing through the canyon forms the Ilıca waterfall at the end of the canyon . The canyon offers a unique opportunity for hiking lovers , and for those who want to photograph nature . Due to its geographical structure , it is very dangerous to pass through the canyon and there are walking platforms only for those who want to walk . The 4 km long Horma canyon is reached by passing through the gate of Küre Mountain National Parks on the road from Pınarbaşı district to Ilıca waterfall .

Çatak Canyon and Glass Terrace

The canyon is 90 km away from the cent re of Kastamonu and 7 km away from the town of Azdavay.The canyon can be reached by a 6 km drive from Azdavay and a 1 km hiking trail . Opened in 2017, 450 meters high glass terrace offers a magnificent view of the 7 km- part of the canyon and the Devrekani creek . Çatak Canyon , which is the area most visited by hiking and photography lovers in this region , is entered for a small fee between 09:00 and 18:00.

Ilica Waterfall

Waterfall , which is within the boundaries of Ilıca village , 12 km away from Pınarbaşı district of Kastamonu, is poured into a natural pond from a height of 15 meters . There are facilities for those who want to stay near the waterfall , which has a magnificent view and is a wonder of nature , as well as areas suitable for picnicking . You can drive up to the waterfall with cars .

Ilgaz Mountains National Park

Ilgaz Mountains , declared a national park in 1976, is one of the most visited spots for nature and ski lovers in winter months . In the national park located within the borders of Çankırı and Kastamonu province , there are dozens of endemic plants , hundreds of different tree species and wild animals . If you're heading into the vast central Anatolia region of Turkey, put Safranbolu on your destination list. Though big-hitter tourist attractions and things to do are not as plentiful as other towns, this UNESCO-listed town is one of the best places to visit in Turkey to slow down your travels and simply soak up the atmosphere.

This once important trade route town is a daydream of the grand Ottoman days, and many perfectly preserved mansions from the era still grace the streets of the old town district.

There is shopping galore here, with the workshops of traditional artisans snuggled into the alleyways, while foodie tourists could spend their entire time gorging in the many sweet shops, where tempting displays of Turkish delicacies lure all but those with the most willpower.

Safranbolu's old town district of Çarsı is a UNESCO-protected site, where narrow cobblestone alleyways wind up the hillside, lined by squeezed-together Ottoman timber-framed mansions.

This neighborhood is home to Turkey's best preserved Ottoman-era architecture, and the vast amount of Safranbolu's visitors are here simply to explore the twisty lanes and admire the lost-in-time ambience of this old trading city that rose to prominence in the 17th century.

Many of the old houses that were once home to wealthy traders and merchants have been painstakingly restored and now function as boutique hotels and restaurants.

If you're interested in Ottoman life in Safranbolu, it's well worth visiting the Kaymaklamlar Evi. This traditional Safranbolu house is an ethnographical museum with all the rooms devoted to dioramas displaying typical scenes of daily life in that era.

Although Safranbolu receives many day-trippers, and a lot of bus tours treat it just as a stop-off on the way to somewhere else, one of Safranbolu's best experiences is being able to sleep for the night in a konak (traditional Ottoman mansion).

Many of Safranbolu's accommodation options have been converted sympathetically, preserving as many original architectural features as possible and decorated in-keeping with the Ottoman character of the building.

This does mean that facilities such as en suite bathrooms can be tiny (in the most traditional konaks, bathrooms are hidden in cupboard spaces) so Safranbolu's boutique hotels are not for everyone, but for ambience and character they can't be beaten.

This famed hamam (Turkish bath) has been wonderfully restored and is one of the best hamams to experience the full traditional scrub, soak, and steam bathhouse treatment in the country outside of Istanbul .

Turkish bathhouses were an important community element during the Ottoman era before running water in houses became commonplace.

A trip to the hammam wasn't just about hygiene, though. This was the place where you came to catch up on all the gossip and even do business deals.

Today, the rejuvenating effects of the traditional scrub, leaving you squeaky clean and rosy pink, are a good enough reason to indulge.

There are several good examples of mosque architecture in Safranbolu, but the Köprülü Mehmet Paşa Mosque is regarded as the most interesting.

Built in 1661 by Köprülü Mehmet Paşa who was the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire, this squat mosque with its helmet-roof has a serene and recently restored interior, featuring a marble mihrab (niche indicating the direction of Mecca), which is well worth visiting during your exploration of Safranbolu's alleys.

In the courtyard, you'll see a metal sundial, which was added in the 19th century.

The mosque is on the main lane through the old town, right next door to the Shoemakers Bazaar, so it's easy to find.

Safranbolu is known for its locally produced sweets, particularly the many varieties of lokum (Turkish delight).

The main alleys of the old town neighborhood are packed with sweet shops where you can sample and buy lokum in a huge range of flavors, from the standard rose water to saffron and chocolate and lokum stuffed with pistachios and walnuts.

It's a rare visitor who completely resists entering one of Safranbolu's sweet shops during their time in town.

As well as lokum, there are many varieties of helva (sweets made from tahini paste) to sample, and plenty of baklava, stuffed with either pistachios or walnuts.

In the center of the old town district, Safranbolu's Cinci Hanı was once the main caravanserai where traveling traders and merchants slept as they passed through town on their journeys east to west along the trade routes.

Built in the 17th century, the han has been well-preserved. The rooms on the second floor were originally used as the inn rooms where the traders bedded down, while the interior courtyard downstairs is now a café and restaurant.

The main reason to come here, though, is to clamber up the stairs to the building's roof for the panoramic views across the old town district's tile roofs.

The great days of trade may have ended, but Safranbolu's bazaars are still jam-packed with wonderful locally made craftwork.

The Shoemakers Bazaar (Yemeniciler Arastası) is the most popular place to hunt for crafts, with its small shops, set around a cobblestone courtyard, selling a range of traditional leather products and lacework, as well as more contemporary felt craft products.

The bazaar is near the center of the old town district on Arasta Arkasi Sokak.

For engraved metalwork, old and new, head all the way down Izzet Paşa Sokak and take the bridge over the creek to the Metalworkers Bazaar (Demirciler Arastası).

The small shops and workshops here offer a huge range of products, from finely engraved coffee sets and copper plates to farming implements.

Huff your way up the steep hill to visit this old yellow government building, which has been turned into Safranbolu's city museum.

The small collection here traces the history of Safranbolu and the culture of the town.

There are some excellent, well-laid out exhibits, with displays of typical household objects, jewelry, costumes, and textiles of the Ottoman era, as well as an ethnographic section downstairs with a mock-up of traditional craft workshops.

The hill summit plaza the museum sits in also offers panoramic views of the old town's rooftops below. In the plaza there's also a clock tower dating to the 18th century.

Yörük Köyü (Nomad Village), 14 kilometers east of Safranbolu, is a tumbledown village packed full of character.

Like Safranbolu, it is home to row upon row of gorgeous Ottoman mansion remnants, though many of them are falling into a severe state of dilapidation.

The village was created when the government forced nomads to settle here (hence the name) and once settled, the new village became a prosperous center.

Today (except on sunny weekends, when it's packed to the brim with visitors from Ankara and other nearby cities taking a break from big town bustle), it's a quiet backwater, with the cobblestone alleyways only overrun with chickens.

It's a charming, higgledy-piggledy kind of place that allows you to get a sense of rural life.

About 10 kilometers north of Safranbolu, this cave system runs for six kilometers into the Gurleyik Hills though you can only explore 500 meters of it.

Stalactites and stalagmites are all along the way, and a trip here is an interesting diversion from looking at Ottoman architecture.

The caves can get very busy with local school groups from May to September. If you're traveling during this period, try to get here early in the day, as the first coach loads don't tend to arrive until after 10.30am.

Whenever you go (even in the height of summer), remember to throw a sweater over your shoulders before you enter. It gets chilly very quickly once you head underground.

This aqueduct was first built by the Byzantines and later extensively restored during the 18th century. It sits seven kilometers north of Safranbolu, spanning the breadth of the Tokatlı Gorge.

Unfortunately, due to safety considerations, you're no longer allowed to walk across the aqueduct itself, but you can get great photos of it from the entry point into the gorge.

When you've finished with your snaps, take the walkway down into the gorge for an easy two-kilometer walk amid the lush canyon scenery.

For more panoramic gorge vistas, head to the Crystal Terrace, a glass balcony suspended over the gorge with an attached café.

If you want to experience a slice of Turkish provincial life, head to the city of Kastamonu, 109 kilometers east of Safranbolu.

Well off the tourist trail, Kastamonu has a bustling center with a vibrant traditional bazaar area full of workshops and Ottoman-era monuments and buildings.

Just off the main street are lanes lined with crumbling Ottoman mansions in various states of disrepair.

The Kastamonu Archaeological Museum is rather brilliant, with a small but beautifully laid-out collection of finds from local excavations, while the recently restored castle, which dates back to the Byzantine era and sits atop the ridge overlooking town, has sweeping views of the city below.

For hiking and outdoor enthusiasts, the Küre Mountains, near Pinarbası, are one of Turkey's untouched wilderness areas, far off the tourism trail.

The densely forested hills hide waterfalls, lakes, and thermal springs and have bags of potential for trekking and hiking.

It is quite undeveloped, and although there is a network of hiking trails, regular maintenance is lacking, so this is not the place for beginner hikers. If you're an experienced outdoors person though, this spot could be right up your alley.

The most famous sight in the Küre Mountains area is the Horma Canyon which leads to the Ilica waterfall. Here, a wooden walkway leading above the river has recently been built to aid access into the area though construction of the path is ongoing.

The tiny hamlet of Kasaba, 111 kilometers east from Safranbolu, is home to one of Turkey's best examples of wooden mosques.

The Mahmud Bey Mosque (Mahmud Bey Cami) may be tiny, but walk through the main door and you'll discover a finely restored wooden interior, which has been richly decorated with floral motifs. To get a better look at the painted designs on the ceiling rafters, you can climb up the creaky stairs to the gallery above.

The trip out here, with both sides of the road lined with agricultural fields and rolling hills beyond, is a slice of Turkish rural life.

Kasaba is 17 kilometers northwest from Kastamonu and is easily combined with a visit to the city.

The place to stay in Safranbolu is the Çarsı where many of the old Ottoman mansions have been converted into boutique hotels and guest houses. Most accommodation options are in the mid-range bracket with a scattering of budget pensions as well.

• Gulevi Safranbolu Hotel is within a set of finely restored Ottoman houses, where guest rooms brim with traditional details. There is an expansive garden area, spacious family suites, and a good included breakfast.
• Cesmeli Konak Hotel is centrally located, just a short hop from the Çarsi's central square; good if you don't fancy tackling Safranbolu's hilly alleyways. Rooms are modern but have plenty of Ottoman wood detailing, and the staff are super friendly. Breakfast is included.
• Dadibra Konak sits up the hill from the center of town in a beautiful timber-framed mansion, which has stunning views across the Çarsi. Rooms are simply decorated with colorful flourishes provided by traditional textiles, and plenty of original wood features, and there's a good included breakfast.

Kastamonu Castle is a historic fortress situated in the center of Kastamonu, Turkey, built on a natural rocky elevation with an altitude of 860 meters (2,820 ft). Unfortunately, in 1943, an earthquake destroyed a portion of the castle. However, restoration efforts have been ongoing since 2005.

Initially, the castle was fortified with walls surrounding the entire city. However, today only a portion of the inner castle with fortifications remains. The dimensions of the castle run north to south for 155 meters (509 feet), while the width ranges between 30 meters (98 feet) and 50 meters (160 feet).
