Double-decker buses in London have been adorned with stunning visuals of Kerala.

The Kerala tourism department has embarked on an innovative initiative by taking “God’s Own Country” to foreign shores through bus branding. Double-decker buses in London have been adorned with stunning visuals of Kerala, showcasing scenes from its picturesque backwaters. This creative venture aims to boost state tourism, particularly as the summer holidays approach. A viral video capturing the double bus branding has garnered significant attention on social media platforms.

An Instagram user shared his excitement after spotting a vibrant London with advertisements that promote Kerala tourism. As the video plays, the user shows the complete look of the bus with scenes from the backwaters. With the logo of Kerala Tourism added to the bus, one can also see pictures of Alappuzha’s houseboat, snake boat races and the water bodies stuck all over it. A hashtag on one side of the bus reads, “#TravelForGood.”

Social media users also reacted to the video, sharing amazement. One of them wrote, “Wow, the whole of Alappuzha is in the vehicle,” while another one commented, “Alappuzha, Kuttanad supremacy everywhere.”

“People recognise India through Kerala, proud of it,” a comment read. A user praised the advertising tactics and wrote, “Brilliant placements, hats off to Kerala tourism marketing team.”

The video has collected over four million views. Kerala Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas also shared a video of the bus branding from London and wrote, “Kerala tourism’s new campaign method. Our Alappuzha and house boat in London buses. New campaign ideas that can be implemented in foreign countries will be informed in the comment box.”

People praised the state tourism department’s effort towards promoting Kerala tourism on foreign soil. Notably, this is not the first time that such an initiative has been taken. Earlier in 2018, around five big London double-decker buses with visuals from Kerala were run across the city. The experiment was carried out with the iconic red buses, catching the attention of the commuters and the general public in London. Prior to that, the department successfully branded Kerala on taxis across London, Birmingham and Glasgow.

What is Homestay Classification Scheme and How?

The Homestays Classification Scheme refers to the practice of providing accommodation or food and accommodation facilities to tourists visiting Kerala by the owners of private homes. To become a homestay provider, a resident of Kerala must have a minimum of one room (with two beds) and a maximum of six rooms (with twelve beds) available for tourist accommodation and submit an application to the Department of Tourism's Director.

Homestays offer tourists an opportunity to experience local culture, lifestyles, social systems, and people. It is a popular accommodation system and economic activity in the tourism industry. As the name implies, homestays involve staying in a "home" with a family, allowing tourists to mingle with local people, culture, lifestyles, and ideas. Homestays are a form of private home accommodation run like a small business by the homeowner, promoting cultural and natural tourism in a sustainable way.

Cultural diversity is a crucial component of homestays, making them appealing to visitors. Homestay accommodation is beneficial for tourism development in rural, ecotourism, and cultural tourism. It provides the local community members with opportunities for active participation in tourism activities while meeting the accommodation needs of tourists.

Guidelines for the Classification and Reclassification of Homestay Units

The Homestay Classification will only be issued in the name of the owner of the house.

Operational accommodation units will only be considered for classification.

Homestay classification will not be granted to leased or rented houses.

Tourist accommodation will only be provided in a maximum of six rooms.

Homestay classification will only be given to units where the owner and their family are physically present.

An application for classification must be submitted to the District Officers of the Department of Tourism.

An application fee of Rs. 3000/- must be paid to the Department of Tourism and submitted along with the application.

An Inspection Committee will assess the facilities based on a checklist, and the classification will be awarded based on their recommendations.

The Director of the Department of Tourism will issue the Classification/Reclassification Certificate for the units.

The Classification/Reclassification will be valid for a period of three years.

Requests for a change to a higher category will only be considered at the time of reclassification.

The existing classification will remain valid until reclassification, provided an application for reclassification is submitted with the required fees three months before the expiry of the existing classification.

The facilities and services provided will be evaluated against the checklist, and the classification units must maintain the required standards at all times.

The Director of the Department of Tourism or a deputed officer has the right to inspect homestays at any time without prior notice.

If serious deficiencies are found, the Department of Tourism may take action, including the cancellation of classification.

Any changes in the facility or services provided by the unit must be reported to the Deputy Director of the District Office of the Department of Tourism within 30 days.

If a unit disagrees with the remarks of the Classification/Reclassification Committee, they may appeal to the Director of the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala within 30 days of receiving communication regarding classification/reclassification.

The Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala reserves the right to modify the guidelines, terms and conditions as needed.

Homestays must display the Classification Certificate visibly to their guests.

An application for reclassification must be submitted three months before the expiry date, along with the prescribed fees; otherwise, it will be considered a fresh application.

Food must be prepared and provided to guests upon request.

Proper and accurate C Form submission is mandatory and must be maintained in records.

What are the steps to begin a homestay business in Kerala?

How to start a homestay business in Kerala" is a commonly asked question by many.  A homestay business in Kerala requires you to follow certain guidelines and regulations set by the state government. Here are the steps to follow:

Determine the location: Identify the location where you want to set up your homestay. Kerala has several tourist destinations, and you can choose a place that is in demand. Prepare the infrastructure: The homestay should have adequate space, amenities, and facilities to provide a comfortable stay for guests. It should also be aesthetically pleasing and reflect the local culture. Obtain necessary licenses: To operate a homestay, you need to obtain necessary licenses from the Kerala Tourism Department. You can either collect the application form for Homestay Registration from the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) office / Tourism Directorate or Regional Office (Norka Building, 4th Floor, Thycaud. Phone 0471 2335571) Thiruvananthapuram or apply online.  Meet the requirements: Ensure that your homestay meets the minimum requirements set by the government. For instance, you need to have a minimum of two rooms for guests and provide basic amenities such as clean drinking water, electricity, and sanitation facilities.

Promote your homestay: Once your homestay is registered, you can start promoting it through online and offline channels. You can list your homestay on popular travel websites, social media platforms, and local directories to attract tourists. In summary, to start a homestay business in Kerala, you need to obtain the necessary licenses, meet the minimum requirements, and promote your homestay through various channels.

What is the potential income from running a homestay?  (How much can I earn from homestay? )

The potential earning from a homestay can vary greatly depending on several factors such as location, amenities, size, competition, marketing efforts, and seasonality. While some homestay owners may earn 50k-80k per month, others may earn more or less than that. It's essential to do market research and determine the average rates of similar homestays in your area before setting a price. Providing unique and high-quality amenities and services can help you attract more guests and increase your income. Additionally, creating a strong online presence and marketing your homestay through various channels, such as social media, travel websites, and word-of-mouth, can help you increase your occupancy and revenue. Ultimately, the earning potential of a homestay depends on various factors, and it's challenging to provide a precise estimate without considering specific details.

Would homestay be a profitable venture as a business?"  (Is homestay a good business?)

Whether homestay is a good business or not depends on various factors, such as location, market demand, competition, and the quality of the homestay experience offered. If the homestay is located in a popular tourist destination with high demand for accommodations, and the homestay offers a unique and memorable experience to guests, then it can be a profitable business. However, if there is stiff competition from other homestays and hotels, or if the homestay is located in a less popular tourist destination with low demand, it may not be as profitable. It is also important to consider the costs involved in running a homestay, such as maintaining the property, providing amenities, and marketing the business. While the maintenance charges may be low, there may be other costs that need to be considered. Overall, the success of a homestay business depends on various factors, and it is important to do thorough research and planning before starting such a business.

How to classify homestay in Kerala?

To classify a homestay in Kerala, you would need to follow the government's certification process, which involves the following steps:

Check if your homestay meets the minimum requirements for classification, such as having basic facilities like clean bedding, sanitation, and safety measures.  Apply for certification through the Kerala Tourism Department or a registered Homestay association.  A team from the Tourism Department will visit your property and evaluate it based on a set of predefined score criteria.  The evaluation team will assign a score to your homestay, which will determine its classification as either Class A (Diamond House), Class B (Gold House), or Class C (Silver House).  Once your homestay is classified, you will be issued a certificate by the Tourism Department, which you can display on your property to indicate its classification.  It's important to note that the classification is valid for three years and will need to be renewed after that period.

State Chief Secretary Shri Jiji Thomson presenting a book on Spice route to Indian- born MP, Shri Virendra Sharma, in the presence of Tourism Secretary Shri GKV Rao.

British MPs Charmed by 'God's Own Country' at Kerala Tourism Presentation

New Delhi, Oct 17: Kerala's time-tested Ayurveda and the enchanting backwaters have wooed the British parliamentarians, in a first-time presentation by an Indian state tourism board at the Westminster.

Kerala Tourism made the presentation about the state for the British MPs, at a special meeting held in the British Parliament complex on October 11. The meeting was led by State Chief Secretary Shri Jiji Thomson and Tourism Secretary Shri G Kamala Vardhana Rao, who met the British MPs, including many Indian-origin members of the British Parliament.

Shri Thomson and Shri Rao were in the British capital to take part in the 'Mayor of London' event to showcase 'God's Own Country' to a British audience. The cultural extravaganza, which had 'mohiniyattam', 'thiruvathirakali' and 'kathakali' performances, was held at the iconic Trafalgar Square on the same day.

"It was an honour for Kerala to address the British MPs in the parliament complex," said Shri Thomson. "The MPs evinced great interest in Kerala and admired our top status on the global tourism map," he added.

Among those present were Shri Virendra Sharma, Indian-born MP of the West London constituency Ealing, Southall, and Stephen Timms, Member of Parliament from the suburban East Ham seat.

"We wanted to directly address the British parliamentarians and tell them why the United Kingdom is the biggest tourism market for Kerala in the world," Shri Thomson said.

Two years ago, the British royal couple, Prince Charles and wife Camilla Parker Bowles, had visited Kerala, watching Kathakali in Kochi and celebrating the 65th birthday of the Prince of Wales at the backwaters resort of Kumarakom. Among prominent British visitors to Kerala include the Beatles legend Sir Paul Mcartney.

Last year, Kerala had received 151,497 travellers from the United Kingdom. Kerala Tourism's London visit is aimed at increasing the figure substantially during the 'Visit Kerala' year.

The presentation by Kerala Tourism in the British Parliament complex assumed significance because of the many Indian-origin politicians elected to the House of Commons.

"The Indian community members in Britain are the greatest ambassadors of our country," Shri Thomson said, while inviting them to come and invest in Kerala's tourism sector.

The meeting, held in a Parliament conference hall, was also attended by several prominent members of the large Indian diaspora in Britain.

"Kerala is a very enchanting land," said the Ealing MP Shri Sharma, while recalling his visit to the state. Offering his support, he appreciated the efforts of Kerala Tourism in leading an energetic campaign across the world to promote tourism in the state.

"The engagement with the British parliamentarians was a major step in elevating our campaign to a much higher level of direct dialogue," said Shri Rao, who talked to the MPs about the varied destinations and new tourism products offered by Kerala.

"We will organise an exclusive meeting with British parliamentarians during the World Trade Mart in London next month," he added.

Kerala Tourism will take part in the WTM, London, the leading travel and tourism fair in the world attended last year by more than 50,000 participants and 5,000 exhibitors from 186 countries. The WTM 2015 will be held during November 2-5.

In 2007, Kumarakom got the distinction of being the first location in India to implement Responsible Tourism practices. The community identified new possibilities for tourism. Homeowners, artisans, and locals engaged in traditional occupations came together and opened their doors to tourists.

In Kumarakom, there were almost no purchases of local produce from tourism, according to RT Mission. Thanks to Responsible Tourism initiatives that bring artisans and farming communities together, the economic benefits are now clearly visible.

Set up in April 2011, Samridhi is perhaps the best example of a symbiotic relationship between tourism and locals. The RT Mission trained ten local women in entrepreneurship and cooking practices and provided them with loans to begin operations.

Another key feature of TIM is that it will provide a forum for local and small-scale entrepreneurs to explore the possibilities of engaging with the tourism sector by interacting with business leaders and officials. The Tourism department will consolidate the outcome of the deliberations and business meets at TIM for time-bound follow-up action. For this, a dedicated facilitation centre will be set-up.

Russia is becoming a favourite destination for Indian tourists. Before, Indians preferred to travel to Moscow and St Petersburg alone. Nowadays, other destinations are also becoming famous. Russia's winter tourism, Trans-Siberia Trains and Cultural Tourism are also famous among Indian tourists.

Similarly, the number of Russian tourists who visited Kerala in 2019 was about 36000, while more than 3.5 lakhs visited Goa. The beaches of Goa are the main attractions. Sri Lanka is Russians' favourite destination thanks to Ayurveda. Kerala can offer beaches and authentic Ayurveda, hill stations, backwaters and house boats. But our products need to be showcased before the genuine Russian tour operators. India was one of the five friendly nations recommended by the Russian government for the safe travel of its citizens. So, the time selected for the first Indo-Russian Travel and Tourism Fair was appropriate. With the support of the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala, we managed present Kerala's tourism potential before leading tour operators from Russia.

24 Indian sellers including resorts, business hotels, tour operators and 4 Russian tour operators, Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala and Moscow Tourism participated in the exhibition with stalls. Leading hotel chains like Taj, O by Tamara, CGH Earth, Somatheeram Group, Tula and Ayurveda hospitals including Kottakkal Ayurveda Hospital, other hospital promoting medical tourism like KIMS and PRS, tour operators such as Kerala Travels, Great India Tours and Cosima Tour were a few among them. Leading Russian outbound companies like FUN AND SUN, LUXURY VOYAGES, MOS TOUR, GRAND RUS, TOURIST CLUSTER, St Petersburg also participated with stalls. 50 Indian and Russian sellers and buyers attended the fair with table space. More than 100 Indian tour operators also interacted with the Russian tour operators.

Representatives of the Moscow Government took part in the seminar. Ms Zlata Antusheva, Chief specialist of the division for the coordination of activities of the Department of External Economic and International Cooperation of the Moscow Government, Executive Secretary of the Business Council with India led the team. Representatives of Moscow Tourism and reputed Companies from Moscow city participated in the seminar with audio visual presentation.

Ms Rajini Menon, journalist, introduced the tourism potential of Malabar region in Kerala. In her address, Ms Menon, said that Malabar offered unexploited tourism destinations. Beaches, hill stations, lakes and the famous Mappila cousin attract foreigners to Malabar. The Monsoon of Wayanad also attracts tourists from all over the world. 17dc91bb1 f

Moscow extends a warm welcome to Indian travellers with enhanced infrastructure and hidden gems

Russia actively promoting moscow as a tourist destination for indian travellers, improving infrastructure and visa process..

Russia is making an active bid to attract Indian travellers to visit Moscow -- a huge megalopolis and the historical, political and spiritual heart of the Russian Federation. The Moscow City Tourism Committee is promoting the city not only as a cultural capital but also as a business hub as it plans to onboard trade partners, tourists and vacationers. Moscow has also strengthened cooperation with the tourism sectors of allied nations, hosting familiarization tours for delegates and arranging business trips to showcase the city's tourism potential.

Travelling to Moscow has now become easier as tourists from India and 54 other countries can apply for an electronic visa to enter Russia from August 1, 2023. (Unsplash)

To accommodate visitors, Moscow is improving its infrastructure: signs are now available in English and Chinese, all announcements on public transport are repeated in English, and hotels are also adapting to cater to the needs of guests from various countries and ensure a comfortable stay. "We are still on our way to restore the flow of Indian tourists in Moscow like it used to be before the pandemic," said Bulat Nurmukhanov, Head of International Cooperation Division of Moscow City Tourism Committee.

Bulat further said that before the pandemic, there was a steady growth of 12-15 per cent on a year-on-year basis. In the first half of the year, Moscow received about 20,000 Indians, compared to the same period a year ago, it is about 56 per cent higher. In a bid to make Moscow a must-visit destination, the committee is actively working on improving the infrastructure for international travellers. Moscow is spearheading the development of innovative standards in catering to the needs of foreign travellers.

Tourists arriving in the capital can stay in hotels of various price segments. They can savour traditional Russian cuisine, and can also indulge in a diverse culinary experience, with options ranging from authentic Indian delicacies to continental dishes prepared to the highest standards. In 2022, the number of foreign tourists who visited Moscow increased by 6.3 per cent compared to 2021, reaching a total of 1.7 million.

Travelling to Moscow has now become easier as tourists from India and 54 other countries can apply for an electronic visa to enter Russia from August 1, 2023. The impact of e-visa rollout would be available by October this year after the quarterly data from the Russian border control agencies is analysed, Bulat said.

Moreover, the Russian government is planning to come out with a virtual 'Foreign Tourist Card' that will enable cashless payments for various services. "The idea behind this card is, a person back home in India can remotely apply for this card and then he/she can transfer money from the personal bank account to this bank account," Bulat added.

Meanwhile, sources in the Indian Embassy in Moscow told reporters that the Indian tourism ministry as well as the governments of Goa and Kerala are slated to participate in roundtable discussions this month. There are also plans to engage social media influencers to improve the inward traffic to India. Before the pandemic, around 3 lakh Russian tourists visited India annually. The numbers are down to around 80,000-90,000 of late.

To facilitate easy visitor movement across the city, there is "Discover Moscow" -- a navigation and travel web portal about Moscow and "RUSSPASS travel service" -- a digital platform designed for planning trips across Russia. The Discover Moscow portal features descriptions of over 1,200 architectural landmarks in Moscow. The site provides news, digests with festival and event information and curated lists of exhibition venues.

By availing the RUSSPASS travel service, tourists can access all essential information for a trip to Moscow on the site, including visa and currency matters, accommodation and transportation options in the capital. The site also offers a trip builder feature, allowing tourists to select pre-designed city routes or create their own itinerary from their favourite locations. There are versions of the site in Russian, English, Spanish and Arabic.

On the cultural scene, Moscow boasts 10,000 cultural venues including theaters, museums, libraries, parks, cinemas, concert halls, and more. In the last decade, around 900 parks and green spaces have been renovated.
