Review: Vans Warped Tour brings eclectic mix to Mesa

It would be incredibly easy to completely tear apart an event mostly attended by teenage girls that took place on a 110-degree Mesa day in a park that has little to no shade in it. It would be easy to badmouth a 20-year-old traveling festival that's very name evokes images of rainbow-haired Hot Topic goths carrying Jack Skellington bookbags and wearing far too much eyeliner. Yes, it would be easy to say the 2015 Vans Warped tour was a brutally hot, day-long testament to the poor musical taste of American youth, but it would also be a lie.

Blessthefall perform during the Vans Warped Tour at Quail Run Park in Mesa on Tuesday, June 23, 2015.

This year's Warped Tour was really an eclectic mix of popular contemporary genres being played in most cases by exciting up-and-comers who are visibly excited to have the opportunity to play in front of the Warped Tour crowd. That is definitely something worth being excited about because as an experienced festival goer, there may not be a better crowd in this country than a Warped Tour crowd.

RELATED: Vans Warped Tour in Mesa: 20 bands worth checking out

In their unyielding determination to catch their favorite bands, hundreds of concertgoers sought refuge from the sun under every tent, canopy, and awning in sight. Then when the traditional shade structures could no longer meet the demand, patrons began hunkering down under semi trailers and raised seating platforms. Other people even found sanctuary hiding behind the porta-potties, braving the smell for the small bit of relief they offered from the sun.

By the late afternoon, anyone who wasn't checking out a band seemed to be hiding in whatever cover they could find and with all the people nestled beneath the unconventional shade the scene in some ways looked more like a natural disaster than a music festival.

There is obvious passion in any crowd of people that trudges out on a June day in the Valley of the Sun. But for a crowd to come out by the thousands in 113-degree heat and spend the entire day moshing, thrashing, and crowd surfing, while only finding brief moments of relief from the heat in repurposed moving equipment, that is some otherworldly dedication.

To be fair, not every band that played yesterday deserved such dedication from the fans. Shark Stage (one of the two main stages) opener Mod Sun, Journey's Right Foot Stage (one of the two second biggest stages) participant Beautiful Bodies, and Beatport Stagev(smallest stage) rapper Kosha Dillz had absolutely no value to their sets whatsoever.

Mod Sun is like G. Love and Special Sauce but for 19-year olds and not smooth or talented. Beautiful Bodies is what would happen if all the good aspects of Scorpion Vs. Tarantula were taken away and all you were left with is a lead singer who's overdoing it for no reason and a band that isn't that good. Kosha Dillz, as in Kosher Dill Pickles, rapped about selling crack and his "murda game," and it just seemed like the wrong crowd.

But beside those three musical atrocities, every other group really delivered on some level. Even the emo metal bands brought the noise. Perhaps I am showing my age (26), but I can't really figure out the appeal to these "metalcore" bands. They all sound the same. I stood all the way through and listened to We Came As Romans, Being As An Ocean, Miss May I, Memphis May Fire, BLESSTHEFALL, Pierce The Veil, Attila and Asking Alexandria and I couldn't name one of their songs or spit back a lyric. The music is just not interesting to me.

But while I watched and listened, I saw and heard fans honestly connecting with the lyrics and really reacting to the music and the bands. I heard crowds of people singing lyrics back at Asking Alexandria louder than the band was singing them from the stage. I saw what had to be at least three dozen crowd surfers make a mass migration toward the Shark Stage because BLESSTHEFALL frontman Beau Bokan told them to.

REVIEW: Vans Warped Tour doesn't feel so punk in 2014

Many music snobs, self included sometimes, write off metalcore bands and other music high schoolers like essentially because... high schoolers. But ignoring youth opinions on music because they are kids is about as useful as Kosha Dillz' "murda game." Maybe all the music at Warped Tour doesn't make sense to people of a certain age, but that's because it was not made for us.

While the more metal-like bands seemed to be the highlight for most of the fans, I had my own group of favorites who, judging by their crowds, all may qualify as hidden gems. PVRIS, Riff Raff, Moose Blood, Icons For Hire and Koo Koo Kanga Roo all stuck out in one way or another.

PVRIS, pronounced "Paris," is a four piece indie-pop outfit from Lowell, Mass., and they came off as totally ready to take on major American music festivals. They make a sound akin to that of bands like Phantogram and were sort of out of place at Warped, but they played a terrific set keeping it mostly to tracks off their newest album, "White Noise."

Riff Raff and Koo Koo Kanga Roo hold the distinction of being the two acts at Warped Tour 2015 who bore the best resemblance to local favorite Treasure MammaL. Koo Koo sang silly childish songs accompanied by dance moves that looked like they were straight out of a Richard Simmons workout video, while Riff Raff did his absurd brand of swag rap that got his crowd so amped up that they literally sprinted to his merch booth following the set for the opportunity to confer with Riff.

Warped Tour at Quail Run Park in Mesa 2014

Icons For Hire and Moose Blood were highlights because they both performed a style of music which the Warped Tour used to be all about — pop-punk. Illinois-based Icons For Hire fell more on the side of Fall Out Boy pop-punk in that they had a very punk aesthetic complete with mohawks and studded clothing even though their music erred closer to pop with mashed-up genres and synth-heavy songs. Moose Blood came from across the pond, as they say, to bring their more Blink-182-meets-the-Ataris-esque pop punk from Canterbury, England to the throngs of fans in Mesa.

Icons were also responsible for the most thought-provoking tune of the day, "Now You Know," which is a track about being a female-fronted band in the male-dominated music industry. Lead singer Ariel brings up some blatantly obvious topics, such as people assuming because she's an attractive woman fronting an up-and-coming band she must have performed sexual favors to get to where she is to more subversive topics like reporters constantly asking what it's like to be a female in the music business.

Toward the end of the night, Attila front man Chris Fronzak asked the crowd if they had just experienced the best day of their entire lives, to which many cheered in the affirmative. Upon hearing the cheers, I scoffed and thought, 'How ridiculous; how could this be the best day of anyone's life?'

But then as I was walking to meet my ride home surrounded by high-school-aged kids, many of whom probably just experienced their first festival, and a person in a car rolled by honking the horn, shouting to the crowd, "You did amazing," I realized how easy it honestly is to believe that many of those kids did have the best day of their entire life. They just had their first or second hugely cathartic experience with music, but that's exactly what Warped Tour is for.

Koo Koo is a dance party for the senses. For the last 15 years, lifelong friends and collaborators Bryan and Neil have toured the globe delighting fans with their high-energy music, infectious positivity, and interactive live show. Their comedic dance party songs are the backbone of a highly successful YouTube channel. Parents, teachers, and kids love partying with Koo Koo!

With an emphasis on crowd participation and building a raucous, hyper-active atmosphere, a Koo Koo show must be seen to be believed. They cut their teeth on the road, playing everything from DIY basements and birthday parties, to sharing main stages with a wide array of genre-defying acts like Yo Gabba Gabba, The Aquabats, and Frank Turner. As well as festival appearances at Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and the Vans Warped Tour.

Now they are ready to step into a new realm with their TV series, Oh Yeah Heck Yeah . This fast-paced variety clip show features music videos, sketches, animation, and interactive games in their irreverent, high-energy style. The first season consists of five ten-minute episodes each premiering a brand new Koo Koo song and video. You can watch their self-produced show on the Koo Koo YouTube channel.

'They Can Hit All Kinds Of Generations': Meet The Minnesota Duo 'Koo Koo Kanga Roo'

November 26, 2019 / 10:29 PM CST / CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- If you spend time around kids, you are likely familiar with the songs of Koo Koo Kanga Roo.

The two-man band of Bryan and Neil has videos that have been viewed more than 100 million times. They have fans around the world -- but Minnesota is ground zero.

"I was in show choir in high school here in Bloomington Kennedy, and Neil was in a punk band in Farmington," Bryan said.

The pair met at St. Mary's University in Winona, and quickly formed a band playing high-energy, G-rated songs.

"We played just for colleges and like bars for like four years, and then people started being like, 'Hey, you should play my kid's birthday party,' and stuff, and we said, 'Yeah,'" Neil said.

They decided to create their own genre, gaining a reputation as "Sesame Street" meets Beastie Boys.

"When you're just two guys running your own biz and, like, you've got to stay alive, and you just have the internet at your disposal, you have to do weird and different stuff, you know," Neil said. "We're always morphing and changing."

A brain break app called GoNoodle picked up their unique videos, produced with an at-home microphone, and next thing they knew, the young men had full-time careers -- playing the Warped Tour and Austin City Limits. They travel the country, but still do gigs at home, like a recent one at Crossroads Church in Woodbury. It was a true all-ages show.

"Adults and kids dancing," said Erik Anderson of Crossroads Church. "It's just fun to see them. They can hit all kinds of generations, and honestly be clean, which is always a hard thing to find when it comes to entertainment."

Their music is clean, but with some dirty references. Take for instance "The Poop Song."

"If you're a fifth-grade boy, it's like your life. But we've found it's more than that. Eight-year-old girls, like, they request 'The Poop Song' all the time," Neil said.

Jokes aside, the duo has been praised by educators around the globe for stimulating students who are non-verbal, and for getting kids to move and groove.

"It's a lesson in stay the course, and just keep making it happen if you can. Then also like finding a niche, finding a corner that's not occupied," Bryan said.

They are two college pals dancing to their own beat.

Bryan and Neil play two shows this weekend. One is for kids on Friday at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, and one is for adults on Saturday at the Turf Club in St. Paul.
