Renting a Bike in Koh Tao - 2023 Guide

In Ko Tao, renting a motorbike or scooter is a popular choice for travelers who want a convenient mode of transportation to navigate the island. However, it’s crucial to remember that a bike in untrained hands can bring your journey to a quick, painful, and expensive finish. On the beautiful island of Koh Tao, motorbike rentals and bicycle rental services are readily available for tourists to explore the scenic landscape.

Koh Tao could be better for learning how to ride a motorcycle. Since the island is small, walking or renting a push bike is preferable, which is becoming increasingly common.

Explore the hidden gems of Koh Tao with ease by Renting a bike in Koh Tao , an affordable and convenient transportation option that allows you to navigate the island’s scenic routes and stunning beaches at your own leisurely pace.

Note a few things:

  • Quad bikes are no longer permitted on the island, and rentals are unavailable.
  • A current KT effort is focused on bike safety and helmet use.
  • Helmets are also provided with all of the aforementioned outfits as part of the rental fee. Make sure to bring them along!

Safety Tips To Keep in Mind While Riding in Koh Tao

  • Several roads, including the main route between Mae Haad and Sairee, are now being renovated.
  • Expect unsurfaced areas, spilt sand, grit, and gravel on the roads, multiple stretches with only one lane for both directions of traffic, and of course, a lot of construction traffic for at least a few months.
  • There are various warning signs around. However, because of this, please ride extremely slowly and with additional caution.
  • The roads on Koh Tao are in vastly different conditions, with sand spots and uneven stretches of pavement that can provide difficulties for even seasoned riders.
  • Always be careful, drive gently, and ensure everyone riding with you is wearing a helmet if you decide to hire a motorcycle. Last but not least, avoid riding if you are unsure.

Where to Rent a Bike in Koh Tao

You can consider the following rentals in Koh Tao for good quality bikes.

1. RPG on the Yellow Brick Road (AKA beach path) in South Sairee Beach

Most of their vehicles are 125 Honda Click automatics, with one or two 110 autos. The 110 is actually not designed to go up any kind of hill with more than one passenger.

2. Oli’s Bike Rental in Mae Haad (top of Down Road)

It has a selection of Honda Click 125 and some Semi-autos for rental. It offers resort picks up & drop-offs, and hence is very convenient.

3. RPM on Songserm Road in Mae Haad

It has the largest selection of different types of bikes, including a few more powerful manual bikes.

4. KP Travel in Central Sairee Beach

It is a good, honest option that has received good feedback consistently. They do not charge for scratches and have a clear policy regarding the cost of broken replacement parts.

5. 23 Bikes on Songsern Road, Pong Mechanic, Mae Haad

His bikes are in excellent technical condition because he is a former Kawasaki Racing Mechanic and the BEST mechanic in Koh Tao. Since he doesn’t charge for scratches, he is a genuinely sweet guy.

Man on a bike at RPM bike rental Shop, Koh Tao

For a 125i Click, prices range from 150 to 350 Baht. Please be aware that choosing the more expensive businesses is frequently a better choice because they incorporate scratch insurance.

The lowest businesses occasionally profit by charging 10,000 baht to retrieve your passport through scratch scams.

Wrapping Up

Exploring Ko Tao on a rented motorbike or scooter allows visitors to experience the island’s stunning beauty at their own pace. Whether you prefer a rented motorbike or a bicycle rental, Ko Tao has plenty of options to cater to every traveler’s needs and preferences. No matter where you decide to rent from, it is a good idea to stay away from stores that have any of the following:

1) Only Thai-written rental agreements – avoid signing anything you don’t understand!

2) Exorbitant parts prices in the rental agreement (you should be paying less than 2,000 THB for a pair of mirrors, which cost 300 THB at the Honda parts center!

3) Businesses that have PRISTINE motorcycles. If it appears that no one has ever crashed it, the previous tenant most likely did and paid a hefty price for it. Choose bicycles with minor panel and mirror damage.

If unsure, tour the island with some companions by renting a bicycle from Apnea Total in Sairee or by hiring a cab or long-tail boat.

Renting a scooter is a great way to get around Koh Tao quickly and make the most of a short trip. However, it is really important to remember that a bike in inexperienced hands can lead to an abrupt, painful and expensive end to your travels!

Koh Tao is not a good place to try riding a motorbike for the first time. It’s a small island so walking or renting a push bike – a growing number are now available – is a better choice.

A few points to note:

1) Quad bikes are no longer allowed on the island, you will not find any for rental

2) There is a current campaign on KT about helmets and bike safety. All of the above outfits also have helmets for use included in the hire price. Make sure you take them with you!

3) A number of roads, including the main road between Mae Haad & Sairee are being upgraded at the moment. For at least a few months expect unsurfaced sections, spilled sand, grit & gravel on the roads, several sections down to one lane for both directions of traffic and of course lots of construction traffic. There are some warning signs around but please take extra care and ride super slow because of this.

4) The condition of the roads on Koh Tao is very variable and there are sandy patches and uneven sections of road surface which can challenge even the experienced rider. As always if you do choose to rent a motorbike please take care, drive slowly, and ensure that both the driver and any passenger is wearing a helmet. Finally if you are not sure about riding, don’t do it.

Where can I rent from?

For experienced riders, we hear consistently good things about the following rental operations:

RPG on the Yellow Brick Road (AKA beach path) in South Sairee Beach – they have mostly 125 Honda Click automatics, with maybe one or 2 110 autos. The 110 is not really suitable for more than one person up any sort of hill.

Oli’s Bike Rental in Mae Haad (top of Down Road) – has a selection of Honda Click 125 and some Semi-autos for rental. Offers resort pick up & drop off so very convenient.

RPM on the Songserm Road in Mae Haad – has the largest selection of different types of bikes including a few more powerful manual bikes.

KP Travel in central  Sairee Beach  as a good, honest option that has received consistently good feedback. They do not charge for scratches and have a clear policy regarding the cost of broken replacement parts.

23 Bikes on Songsern Road, Pong Mechanic, Mae Haad – Pong is a former Kawasaki Racing Mechanic and the BEST mechanic on Koh Tao so his bikes are in top shape mechanically. He is a really nice guy and doesn’t charge for scratches.

Prices range from 150 Baht to 350 baht for a 125i Click. Please be aware that you are often better off going for the more expensive companies as they include scratch insurance. The cheapest companies sometimes make their money through scratch scams where they charge 10,000 baht to get your passport back.

Regardless of where you choose to rent from, it is a good idea avoid shops with the following:

1) Rental agreements that are only written in Thai – don’t sign things you can’t understand!

2) Extortionate parts prices in the rental agreement (a pair of mirrors costs 300THB in the Honda parts centre, you shouldn’t be paying 2,000THB for them!)

3) companies with PRISTINE bikes. If it looks like nobody has ever crashed it, then the last renter probably did and paid a fortune for it. Pick bikes which have minor damage to panels and mirrors.

If uncertain, rent a bicycle (Apnea Total in Sairee) or hire a taxi/long tail boat with some friends and explore the island that way!

Where To Rent A Motorbike In Koh Tao (+Tips Not To Get Scammed)

kp travel & motorbike rentals

Renting a motorbike in Koh Tao is a must if you want to the best tourist spots on Koh Tao . Though at the same time this island is very infamous for its motorbike scams. So what to do? Miss the cool spots? Or take a leap of faith and go for it? In this Thailand travel blog I will point you out to a motorbike rental in Koh Tao with scratch insurance and explain why it is hard to drive around the island. For more general tips for renting a motorbike in Thailand click on this link.

First of all you have to consider your own motorbike driving skills. Are you going to feel comfortable driving a motorbike and did you ever do it before? This is not your home country where traffic is properly regulated and roads are in a perfect state. You are on a Thai island with shitty and steep roads!

May you decide to rent a motorbike in Koh Tao then there are a couple things you need to be aware of here on the island. Dont let this adventure ruin your trip to Thailand ! Very important to know is the geography of the island. There a several hills and to reach most hidden bays, you have to cross those hills. Some roads can be extremely steep and on top of that not even paved. To reach for example a popular spot called Mango Bay (also one of the best viewpoints in Koh Tao ) some serious off road adventure is waiting for you. There are loads of tourists who drive to this bay on a motorbike every day without having any accidents or whatsoever, but it’s not for the faint-hearted! As I said not all roads are paved, you will for sure encounter loose sand and dirt tracks even some off road tracks as well.

In total I lived for almost half a year on Koh Tao and have been traveling to Thailand almost 20 times. All my experiences are bundled in almost 50 Thailand travel blogs . I can help you with Thailand itineraries , island hopping adventures , what to pack for Thailand , finding cheap domestic flights and much more.

Where to rent a motorbike in Koh Tao

Renting a motorbike in Koh Tao is like buying a hot dog in the US. You will see the ‘motorbike for rent’ signs everywhere. Apparently a lot of locals have seen the potential of making money with renting out brand new looking motorbikes to tourists and that is probably also a reason why Koh Tao got infamous for its motorbike scams. Paying a ridiculous amount of money for some simple scratches you might not have even caused yourself is daily business. Unfortunately scams happen quite often and you will find many bad stories on the internet about it.

Still looking where to stay in Koh Tao ? Click on the link for Koh Tao accommodation suggestions and the best area to stay.

A good way to avoid being ripped off while renting a motorbike in Koh Tao is first of all renting your bike in a reliable place. Always ask your hotel if they have motorbikes for rent. Hotels will not that quickly try to make money off you from a wrecked motorbike, as it is not their main business and they don’t want any bad reviews on the internet about motorbike issues.

Motorbike rental Koh Tao with insurance

Obviously another more stress free rental is if you find a motorbike that comes with insurance. I did not know they existed but lately I stumbled upon a smart Thai that started renting out motorbikes in Koh Tao with insurance. You will pay about US$2 extra but at least you are covered for any scratches. That means you will definitely drive around with a lot less stress. Be aware though that this insurance will only cover the scratches, any dents or broken parts will still be charged! Breaking some parts will most probably only happen though when you have a serious accident. The place is called KP Travel Koh Taoravel Koh Tao and is located on the beach road in Sairee. You will see the motorbikes outside with a sign saying ‘insurance included’!

IMG 8623

The going rate for a simple motorbike will be somewhere around $5 for 24 hours. Although handing over your passport to an unknown Thai seems dodgy, this is Koh Tao and Im sure you will find this everywhere when you travel to Thailand . Without a passport, no motorbike! Regardless what people tell you, if you are not willing to hand in your passport, you wont get a motorbike in Koh Tao!

So may you decide to rent a motorbike on Koh Tao then my advice is:

  • Rent it from a reliable place, like for example a dive shop or a hotel;
  • Make photo’s AND a video;
  • Pay that little extra for insurance;
  • Drive slowly and responsible, you are on a holiday!

Regarding the last point I unfortunately have to admit that there are a lot of dickheads on the road thinking they are driving around in a stunt movie. More and more tourists are finding their way to this little paradise and traffic gets busier. Drive carefully! Have a look around you. So many tourists/idiots are bandaged and that is most likely not from scuba diving or going out in Koh Tao and drinking cocktails on the beach. Sadly accidents are very common. Don’t let your Thailand island hopping adventure be ruined by a bike accident!

Keep in mind that despite the fact that you hardly see anyone wearing a helmet, it is officially illegal to drive without!

IMG 0574

Koh Tao motorbike rental scams

In case something would happen be honest about it when handing in the motorbike. Don’t try to hide it, these Thai guys know exactly what they are doing! Act like an adult admitting your mistake. Arguing with someone who holds your passport is not the smartest thing to do anyway. You were well aware of the consequences when you rented the motorbike; you even signed the document stating what would be the consequences in case of an accident. Try to change your attitude and be funny about it, you might get discounted!

I also wrote an article about tips for renting a scooter in Thailand , with all the ins and outs and rules you officially need to follow.

A couple years ago I scratched my motorbike as I drove up an extremely steep road. It was impossible to make it, but I still wanted to give it a try. I ended up tumbling over into the bushes and slid down the hill together with my motorbike. Luckily only a couple parts on the bottom were scratched but nothing too bad. As I handed in my motorbike I told the guy what happened he took a quick look and smiled. Nothing too bad he said and he told me he was not replacing the scratched items. Therefore he charged me only 50% and I ended up paying only US$20.

Motorbike scams by police officers don't happen that often in Thailand unlike places like Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia where they stop you constantly, read my stories in renting a motorbike in Bali .

Longer on the island than a week or two? Consider buying a scooter and selling it at the end of your stay. Go and take a look at the Koh Tao trader Facebook page and you might find a bargain! Want to enjoy 4G while on the island? Take a look at my article best SIM card In Thailand for Travelers  and choose wisely!

Here’s how to rent a Moscow city bike

A young man rides a public bike on a Moscow street.

A young man rides a public bike on a Moscow street.

Finally, it’s sunny and warm in the city, and Muscovites are dusting off their bikes .If you don’t own no worries, it’s a piece of cake to rent a city bike.

1. How to rent a bike

kp travel & motorbike rentals

First , you need to register on Moscow’s bike sharing website ( https://velobike.ru/en/ ), on the app (App Store, Google Play), or on a terminal. The app shows the nearest rental station to you. When registering you need to give your name, email, and mobile phone number  – the system will send you an SMS with your personal pin code. You can also add a Troika card  – you cannot pay using it but it's easier to use the system if you do have one.

Choose your bike, press “ok” on its dashboard, enter your login and password (from your SMS), or attach the registered Troika card. Wait until the beep and start riding.

If you would like to know how much time you have left, just press “ok” and you’ll see the timer and mileage.

When you finish, you don’t need to return the bike to the same station – any will do. Push the bike into the lock, press “ok” on its dashboard, and again wait for the sound (one signal means that the rental is over, three signals indicates an error). Important note: You should receive an SMS at this point end and on the bike’s dashboard “ Vozvrat ok” (“The return is ok”) will appear.

If you would like to rent an e-bike, check its battery power: A bike with green, yellow, and red indicators can ride 18 km, yellow and red – 10 km, red - 5 km. The e-bike should can only be returned to the same e-bike station. If you don’t you’ll be fined 1,000 rubles ($16).

2. Find a rental bike station

kp travel & motorbike rentals

There are 430 stations across the city with over 4,300 cycles, including 260 e-bikes. You can spot them near metro stations, parks, and on touristic routes. Next to the bikes you’ll find an electronic terminal – use it to take your wheels.

3. Choose the right bike

kp travel & motorbike rentals

Look at the pedals: It’s better to choose big ones with plastic spikes as they’ll stop your feet from sliding.  Then adjust the height of the bicycle saddle – and memorize the number on the bike’s ruler under the saddle. It will save you time in future.

Some Russians also note that it’s more comfortable to use the classic side kickstand instead of the center ones as it’s easier to operate.

Don’t take bikes with a twisted saddle because this is how users show that a bike needs to be repaired.  Moreover, if you see a damaged bike at a station, turn the saddle down and technical workers will understand that they need to repair it. (the phone of the helpdesk is +74959664669)

4. The money issue

kp travel & motorbike rentals

The price of  renting a bike in Moscow for one day is only 150 rubles and 600 rubles for a month: It includes 30 minutes of riding. The system will freeze 1,000 rubles on your card as a safety deposit, it will be returned after the rental is over. If you plan to ride for more than 30 minutes, the extra time will be paid from your deposit. More than 30 minutes costs 30 rubles ($0.5), two hours – 100 rubles ($1.5), three hours – 450 rubles ($7), and so on. If you ride for more than 48 hours, you’ll be fined for 30,000 rubles ($480).

The Moscow bike-sharing system accepts Visa and MasterCard. The price for the e-bike is the same.

5. Riding a bike in Moscow

kp travel & motorbike rentals

It’s better to ride on the special cycling paths: You’ll find them in the city center and parks. In Russia, cyclists can ride on the right part of the roadway, as well as sidewalks. You cannot use a bike on highways (like Moscow’s Ring Road) and pedestrian areas. You should follow the traffic rules and signal before turning.

If you need to stop for a while, use the retractable cable to lock the bike. Enter the pin code to lock the cable. Enter the pin code again or attach your Troika to use the bike.

You can take your wheels on a commuter train (you need a special ticket), on the bus, and the Moscow Central Circle.

Here are some routes to inspire you to ride .
