Lake Eyre Airtours Charleville - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Outback Airtours

Airtours are by far the best way to apreciate this wide brown land of ours. We offer four "standard" tours for groups of up to four people, ranging from a twenty minute local flight to a three overnight all inclusive tour. Extended tours operate between April and September, and are not available during the hotter months. All tours depart from and return to Charleville Airport.

These tours are generally only available after a serious rain event causing the Diamantina River and Cooper Creek to flow sufficiently to cause flooding in the Channel Country and overflow into Lake Eyre. The Tours are two overnight/two and a half day duration, with twin-share accommodation at Birdsville and Innamincka. Lunch on day two is at William Creek on the Old Ghan train line in outback South Australia.

Maximum flight time per segment is two and a half hours, and ground tours are included at Birdsville and Innamincka. We alo offer a Coober Pedy add-on, with an extra night at Coober Pedy in an underground motel, and includes a "Breakaways"ground tour.

Click on the map to expand it

This Tour depends on rain events resulting in a significant flow in the Cooper Creek. It caters for upto four guests, and is of approximately 5 hours duration. From Charelville the aircraft tracks via the Bulloo River, Thylundgra Station to Cooper Creek at its widest point. We then follw the Cooper channels downstrean to abeam Durham Downs Station, before returning to Charleville via a short stop at the Natural History Museum at Eromanga.

Offered during the cooler months between April and October, this is a great way to get an appreciation of the town of Charleville and the surrounding mulga lands. The tour caters for between two and four guests, and is airbourne for appoximately 20 minutes. The Ward, Langlo and Warrego Rivers, the export abbatoir and olive grove are some of the features covered in this tour.

For those wanting to see a bit more of our amazing countryside, this flight is just the ticket. From Charleville we fly North following the Warrego River to the village of Augathella. Turning to the West, we overfly the Pinnacles, a distinctive geological formation rising from the surrounding downs, to the Ward River and then back to Charleville. The flight last for approximately 40 minutes and caters for upto four guests.

We wanted to thank you for what was a most memorable couple of days, as we were treated to the best look of this great country of ours. We were all overcome by the diversity of colour, land and water scapes as we skimmed down the channels and rivers and over the lakes and wetlands. It was more than we could have expected.

Lake Eyre Scenic Flight and Walk to the Edge of South Lake Eyre, tour to Marree and Leigh Creek

This morning take a scenic flight over North Lake Eyre. We fly from William Creek, the closest airstrip to the lake. Lake Eyre is the largest salt lake in the Southern Hemisphere and more often dry than not. But when soaking rain does fall or flood waters drain into Lake Eyre, this dry land fills with lives. Thousands of pelicans, banded stilts and gulls fly in from as far away as North Queensland, flowers bloom and plants grow at a breakneck pace. No matter if Lake Eyre’s status is dry or wet, a scenic flight over Lake Eyre gives you a true sense of the wilderness, remoteness, and the enormous size of it. Outback South Australia is home to some hidden treasures, and you have the option to witness the Anna Creek Painted Hills. These must-see sandstone hills are a stunning outcrop in the middle of nowhere and can only be reached by air. Get up a little earlier and join the optional scenic flight highlighting the wonderful colours of the area. In addition, we have permission to land and explore this incredibly unique and spectacular landmark on the ground.

We continue our road trip and discover the scenery and lives along the Oodnadatta Track. Our first stop brings us to the viewing area of South Lake Eyre. Take a short walk to the edge of the lake to get an up-close experience with Lake Eyre. Alternatively, enjoy the views from the information bay. Be amazed by the endless horizon and incredible nature. Back on the road we follow the Oodnadatta Track to Marree, a historic railway township located at the turn off to the Birdsville Track. Visit the Afghan Mosque, learn about Sir Sidney Kidman, the Great Northern Express and about old Tom Kruse the outback posty. Our next stop takes us to Farina, which was established as a railway town for passengers travelling on the Transcontinental North Line in 1878. Visit the ruins and some of the reconstructed buildings while learning about the important history. Not too many people are listed as one of their town’s visitor attractions. But then Talc Alf is a one off, a quirky and engaging outback character who has achieved near icon status. Over the past 40 years he has created an outside gallery, and we view some of Alf’s unique talc carvings in Lyndhurst. We continue our journey further south to Leigh Creek. Once supplying all the needs for the working families in the coal mining industry, the town is transitioning to a regional tourist hub. We stay the night and enjoy a delicious 2-course dinner. Loved every minute of our 5 day tour with Flick and Rita! These guys are such fun, and couldn’t do enough for us. All our attraction visits were great! We loved seeing the opal mine in Coober Pedy, and staying at the William Creek Hotel grounds including flying over Lake Eyre and the Painted Hills! This was such good value, and we would love to tour with them again! They even give you ‘Frequent Flick Points’ on your next tour! Do yourself a favour and give these guys a go!

Tripadvisor

My husband and I have just returned from the 5 day Lake Eyre tour. The personalised service provided by the team was exceptional. In addition to good meals, we had an ample supply of fresh fruit and water on board – a great idea! Accommodation was good – loved our overnight stay underground at the Coober Pedy Lookout Cave. There are many highlights – our favourites were the Arid Lands Botanical Gardens (Port Augusta), Woomera Rocket Range, Coober Pedy opal mine tour, the flights from William Creek to the Painted Hills and over Lake Eyre, walking to the edge of Lake Eyre and last but not least, a pleasurable wine tasting session at Claymore Wines, Clare Valley. The chance to experience these remote, magical places has been a dream of ours for years. This tour exceeded our expectations.

Great affordable small group tour. Standing on Lake Eyre as well as seeing it from the air was awesome. Tour guide Flick was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble. Another highlight was Coober Pedy. Incredible. Outback touring at its best.

Thank you very much for the kind words and pics- very thoughtful.  Our trip was beyond magnificent largely due to your attention to details and passion!! It was perfect and we lament we are no longer away but back on the ‘rats wheel’. However, we look forward to our next trip with you guys; been thinking about it today! We hope you guys are well as with the rest of the team.

Take good care.

This trip exceeded all our expectations in every way. Amazing trip of a lifetime from Longreach to Lake Eyre; flying over fresh and salt water lakes and the huge river systems of the Channel Country/Lake Eyre region was breath taking. Our pilot took us over the Channel Country giving us a guided tour of the most diverse and magnificent country that I personally have ever experienced. We spent a night in Birdsville staying at the famous Birdsville Pub mixing it with the locals and listening to their yarns, a ton of fun was had by all. Phillip has such a wealth of knowledge, answering questions while giving us detailed information of the area. We will be back to do it again. Josie Archer - Jomax Engineering

  • 3 Days Scenic Outback Adventure with Lake Eyre 2024

Small group air tour from Gold Coast to Birdsville, Lake Eyre & Innamincka return

Experience some of the most remote and iconic parts of Australia on this three day incredible Outback Adventure. Travelling in a private Cessna Caravan, you’ll hop from the east coast directly to outback townships, cattle stations and stunning landscapes. Departing from the Gold Coast, head west into the Outback to visit the iconic town of Birdsville, see the expanse of Lake Eyre, visit the Cooper Creek at Innamincka and drop into Charlotte Plains Cattle Station.

Enquire now

Day 1. Gold Coast – Charleville – Birdsville

Checking into the Seair hangar at 6:45am, your adventure begins with a meet and greet with the other guests, before an early briefing and our departure sees the sun rising over the Gold Coast as you head west for a 2hr 30min flight to Charleville during which a light breakfast will be supplied. On departure from Charleville we continue west, further into the Outback. Arriving into Birdsville at approximately 1:00pm we overfly the iconic Birdsville Racecourse just before landing and then taxi the aircraft up and park out the front of the Birdsville Hotel (just across the road). Spend the afternoon exploring Birdsville before regrouping at 4:30pm, to climb aboard the air conditioned 4WD tour vehicle and head west into the Simpson Desert to enjoy sunset drinks on Big Red, the first major dune as you enter the desert. After sunset, return to the Birdsville Hotel at 7:30pm for dinner and drinks at their heritage listed front bar. Overnight accommodation: Motel units at the Birdsville Hotel (B,L,D)

Day 2. Birdsville – Lake Eyre – William Creek – Dig Tree – Innamincka

Day two starts with a cooked breakfast, before departing Birdsville at 8:30am, you’ll get an opportunity to see Big Red and the Simpson Dessert from the air. Flying south and leaving Queensland into South Australia we pick up and follow the Diamantina River at low level through the Goyder Lagoon and then along the Warrburton River into the northern tip of Lake Eyre (North). While tracking south over Lake Eyre (North) we will climb up to allow you to see the sheer size of the 9,500 square km lake from your vantage point overhead. Heading west from Lake Eyre you’ll arrive in William Creek at 11:30am and learn how this unique town operates, generating its own power and water before sitting down to lunch and a cold beer at the only pub in town, the William Creek Hotel. After lunch, fly back east toward Lake Eyre (South) and the infamous ‘Marree Man’ before continuing north over Lake Eyre to pick up the Cooper Creek and follow it to Innamincka. Conditions permitting, we overfly Innamincka to visit the historic Dig tree and learn about the Burke & Wills story. The third and final flight for the afternoon is a short 10 minutes, low level back to Innamincka along the Cooper Creek. Settle into the Innamincka Hotel and have a look around town, before heading out for an afternoon Grave Tour to see Burks final resting place along the Cooper Creek. The Cooper Creek is the other major waterway that feeds Lake Eyre in flood years and it brings life to the barren landscape. Watch wildlife come to drink from the creek as the sunsets before heading back to the hotel. Dinner will be at the Innamincka Hotel and a few more drinks before retiring to your room for a good night’s rest. Overnight accommodation: Ensuited rooms at the Innamincka Hotel (B,L,D)

Day 3. Innamincka – Cunnamulla – Charlotte Plains – Gold Coast

After breakfast, take to the air and head east, returning into Queensland following Cooper Creek stopping briefly in Cunnamulla to refuel and then another short hop sees you landing at Charlotte Plains Station in the late morning. Met on arrival by Robyn Russell, our host and station manager, spend the day exploring an authentic piece of the Australian Outback. This property has been in Robyn’s family for generations and she shares its rich farming history on guided tours of the station. Visit the cattle yards and shearing sheds before sitting down to a ploughmans lunch looking out over the landscape. After lunch head out to the stations artesian water bore and relaxing in one of the bath tub’s, full of warm water you’ll gain an appreciation for station life and the culture that it has developed. At 3:45pm it’s time to depart our final sector together as a group, flying east, heading back to the Gold Coast and returning to civilisation in the early evening. Wish your fellow travellers farewell, as the tour official concludes. (B,L)
