Tung Chung Fort

Tung Chung Fort

This well-preserved fort dates back to 1832, and it has quite a history. When the British took control of Hong Kong in 1898, the fort was abandoned. During World War II, Japanese forces occupied it, after which it served as a police station and then a college. The fort today stands as a relic of a bygone era, complete with six old muzzle-loading cannons and Chinese archways. If you’re really into history, don’t miss the nearby Tung Chung Battery, too.

Lantau Trail

Lantau Trail

Seventy-kilometre Lantau Trail cuts a path across the island, incorporating some of its most memorable viewpoints and wildest nature. The trail is divided into 12 sections of varying difficulty. Some of them can be pretty gruelling, so it’s no surprise that this trail makes up much of the course for the annual TransLantau ultra-marathon and remains a popular weekend destination for hikers and trail runners. Don’t miss the hike to Sunset Peak; at 869 metres, it’s the third-highest point in Hong Kong. As its name suggests, it offers the best sunset views on the island, if not the whole SAR. Visit in autumn or winter, when the surrounding silvergrass shimmers brightest.

  • July 27, 2023

Stepping onto Lantau Island is like being transported to a different world – one where nature reigns supreme and time seems to stand still. It’s easily one of the best decisions I made while I was traveling around  Hong Kong .

This remarkable island, the largest within Hong Kong’s territories, is full of contrasts; here, soaring mountains and tranquil beaches coexist with quaint fishing villages and Buddhist temples. It’s so different from the sky-scrapers that’s only a short train-ride away if you can believe!

In this travel guide, we’ll explore the Lantau Island’s rich history, key attractions, and hidden gems. This day trip itinerary will surely guide you through all of Lantau Island’s best sights with plenty of useful travel tips in between for that perfect island getaway!

What is Lantau Island Known for?

Lantau Island is known for being a serene escape from the concrete jungles of Hong Kong (I also made a  Hong Kong travel guide  if you’re interested). The island is home to majestic mountains, idyllic beaches, and is one of Hong Kong’s cultural & spiritual centers.

The name “Lantau”, meaning “broken head” in  Cantonese , was derived from the unique shape of Lantau Peak, resembling a broken giant’s head.

History of Lantau Island

The history of Lantau Island traces its roots back to the Neolithic Age when it was first inhabited!

The island was a vital outpost in the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), serving as a hub for salt production and a naval base.

Fast forward to the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), the island gained prominence as a significant trading center. The serene waters of Silvermine Bay witnessed an influx of merchant ships loaded with silk, spices, and exquisite ceramics.

In the 19th century, with the advent of British rule, the island saw considerable development, especially the establishment of the Silver Mine in Mui Wo, which lent its name to Silvermine Bay.

The mine, though, was shut down by the early 20th century.

Today, Lantau Island has transformed into an important tourism hub, housing Hong Kong’s International Airport and landmarks like the Tian Tan Buddha and Disneyland!

Lantau Island Things to Do

How to Get to Lantau Island

Reaching Lantau Island is as easy as pie, thanks to the extensive transportation network in Hong Kong. Here are some of the ways you can make your way to this island oasis:

  • MTR: The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is the quickest and most convenient way to get to Lantau Island. You can hop on the Tung Chung Line from Hong Kong Station (on the Island Line) or Kowloon Station (on the Tseun Wan Line), and disembark at Tung Chung Station .
  • Ferry: For a more scenic journey, you can opt to take a ferry from the Central Ferry Pier 6 to Mui Wo , which is on Lantau Island. The ferry ride offers breathtaking views of the Hong Kong skyline and the tranquil waters of the South China Sea.
  • Taxi: If you prefer a more comfortable and direct ride, you can hail a blue Lantau taxi . However, this is the priciest option.
  • Car : Alternatively, you can also  rent a car  if you’re with a family and want to take things at a much leisurely pace.
  • Tour : If you’re simply looking to join a tour and explore the island hassle-free, you can  join this tour  that covers a lot of the island’s spots on this blog post, but definitely not everything.

Lantau Island Day Trip Itinerary

1. tung chung fort.

Since you’re already at Tung Chung, kick off your day of adventure at Tung Chung Fort, a historical gem that has stood strong since the 19th century.

The fort was built in 1832 during the Qing dynasty to combat piracy and to reinforce the coastal defense of the region. The brick-and-stone fort is now a declared monument of Hong Kong.

Once you step inside its walls, you’ll find six old cannons, a magazine, and a series of sturdy granite-wall barracks.

You can imagine the soldiers who once patrolled its walls, ever watchful for signs of pirate ships.

By this time, you should be ready for your next stop, the majestic Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery.

You can reach there by bus or the famous Ngong Ping 360 cable car which I highly recommend!

Lantau Island Day Trip Itinerary Cable Car

2. Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car

Now, you’re in for a treat because the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car is an experience that will literally lift you up into the clouds!

Hop on the Ngong Ping Cable Car and get ready to be mesmerized by the captivating aerial views of the mountains, the sea, and the grasslands. This 25-minute ride will carry you over 5.7 km (3.5 mi) from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping, and you’ll arrive feeling on top of the world.

The cabins themselves come with a choice – you can either opt for a standard cabin or a crystal cabin with a glass floor. If you’re brave enough to choose the latter, you’ll feel like you’re floating above the stunning vistas, a truly exhilarating experience!

The Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car is open from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM. To avoid the long-lines, you can easily get your round-trip tickets through  here .

Ngong Ping Village Gate

3. Ngong Ping Village

Emerging from the cable car, you’ll find yourself in Ngong Ping Village. This culturally-themed, open-air marketplace is surrounded by nature and imbued with  spirituality .

Although it might have been built to cater to the tourists, the careful thought put into its design makes it much more than your usual tourist trap.

The architecture of the village reflects the local culture, with the  traditional Chinese  buildings mirroring the historic Po Lin Monastery nearby.

The village also offers a number of entertaining experiences. The “Walking with Buddha” multimedia presentation tells the story of Siddhartha Gautama (Shakyamuni Buddha), the man who became Buddha, and his path to  enlightenment .

He’s the central figure in the  Theravada Buddhist  tradition and the founder of Buddhism !

Tian Tan Buddha in Lantau Island

4. Tian Tan Buddha

Just a short walk from the village sits the majestic Tian Tan Buddha, also known as the Big Buddha.

I recommend heading up here first before going to the Po Lin Monastery for lunch. You can buy your food meal vouchers here, which you will need to enter the monastery’s restaurant, plus you’ll be hungrier after scaling up the stairs, win-win!

The Big Buddha was built in 1993, this monumental bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha stands 34 m (112 ft) tall and is one of the most prominent symbols of Buddhism in Hong Kong . It’s also one of the largest outdoor seated Buddha statues in the world.

Po Lin Monastery View from Tian Tan Buddha

Climbing the 268 steps to reach the statue might sound daunting, but it’s worth the effort. Each step brings you closer to the serene gaze of the Buddha, and each breath of mountain air energizes you to keep going on. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning vistas of the island’s mountain ranges, I especially like how the Po Lin Monastery from afar looked like it was perched in the middle of a valley.

The Buddha’s right hand is raised in the  Abhaya Mudra , representing the removal of affliction, while the left hand rests on his knee, symbolizing human happiness.

Around the base of the Big Buddha, you’ll find six smaller bronze statues known as “ The Offering of the Six Devas ,” presenting gifts to the Buddha, symbolizing charity, morality, patience, zeal,  meditation , and wisdom, all necessary to enter into  Nirvana .

Po Lin Monastery framed by leaves

5. Po Lin Monastery

Not far from the Big Buddha is the Po Lin Monastery, another one of the main highlights on the Ngong Ping Plateau.

Established in 1906 by three monks from Jiangsu Province, today it’s one of its most important Buddhist sanctums in Hong Kong.

The monastery is an impressive complex of temples, shrines, and beautiful gardens. The Grand Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas, the primary temple, is a sight to behold.

Po Lin Monastery and Tian Tan Buddha

If you got your food vouchers from the Big Buddha, then drop by the monastery’s vegetarian restaurant. Even if you’re not a vegetarian, it’s worth trying the delicious dishes made from fresh vegetables, mushrooms, and tofu, all prepared in the traditional Buddhist manner.

The volume is quite large and to be honest, I had a hard time finishing it all, but the food was delicious!

Cost: Free, inner halls at 25 HKD (3.20 USD)

Lantau Island Wisdom Path

6. Wisdom Path

To find the Wisdom Path, head to the  forest , a bit further away from the other attractions. This is a bit of a hidden gem and you can escape the crowds for a bit.

The Wisdom Path is a wooden art installation that takes the shape of an infinity symbol when seen from above, it’s basically a fusion of nature, art, and philosophy.

The Wisdom Path is marked by 38 towering wooden pillars, each over 8 to 10 m (25 – 35 ft) tall. Inscribed on these posts are verses from the Heart Sutra, one of the world’s best-known prayers revered by  Confucians , Buddhists, and  Taoists  alike.

It’s all written in traditional Chinese characters, and they describe the essence of Buddhist wisdom – the  understanding of emptiness  to perceive reality.

The wisdom path in Lantau Island, Hong Kong. The Heart Sutra is inscribed on these wooden planks positioned in the shape of infinity.

7. Lantau Trail

As you can see from the photo above, the Wisdom Path is actually just beside the trail head for Lantau Peak.

This is an optional activity and it’s reserved for those who have a lot of energy but the trek itself is definitely one for the books.

Now, since this is a day trip, you won’t be able to traverse the entire trail, but a shorter trek is entirely doable. There’s also the  Dragon’s Back  trail in Hong Kong for a much easier and scenic route.

You might consider hiking only a section of the trail, such as the popular Stage 2, stretching from Pak Kung Au to Ngong Ping.

This particular section offers the best of both worlds: it’s moderately challenging and, at about 5.6 km (3.4 mi), the perfect length for a leisurely 2-3 hour hike . You’ll also get to nab Lantau Peak while you’re at it, the highest point on Lantau Island!

If you are quite keen on doing this hike and are a bit worried on time, you can skip Tung Chung Fort and the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car and start at Pak Kung Au instead, on the descent at the other side you’ll end up in the Wisdom Path!

From there you can then continue on with the itinerary, either visiting the attractions around Ngong Ping Plateau or continue on to Tai O Fishing Village.

Tai O Fishing Village Azure Mountains

8. Tai O Fishing Village

If you decided to skip out on the hike, no worries because Tai O Fishing Village is more than just meets the eye.

Just a bus ride away from Ngong Ping, this traditional fishing village, resting on stilts above the tidal flats of Lantau Island, is a far cry from what you’ve seen so far on the island. Tai O translates to “large inlet” referring to the outlet for the waterways.

Once known as the “Venice of Hong Kong,” Tai O is famous for its old-world charm. As you walk through the narrow lanes, you’ll see traditional stilt houses, dried seafood being prepared and sold, and locals going about their daily routines.

Tai O holds significant value as one of the last remaining traditional fishing villages in Hong Kong. Despite the urbanization seen across most of Hong Kong, Tai O has managed to preserve its age-old customs and traditions.

Around this time, the day is already coming to an end and you might already be feeling a bit tired, you can either stick around here longer for sunset, head to Mui Wo and take a ferry back to Hong Kong Island (and still catch the sunset), or take a bus back to Tung Chung for a train ride back to Hong Kong Island.

Tai O Fishing Village itself has plenty of activities to do, there are amazing hiking trails, that are very short and easy with amazing views of the sea, there are boat tours with a chance to catch the rare pink dolphins, and simply walking around and taking in the laid-back atmosphere. If you’re keen on learning more, you can read more about the  things to do in Tai O Fishing Village .

Where to Stay Around Lantau Island

Hong Kong can be a bit pricey and it was a bit difficult for me to find the right balance between comfort and affordability, but I was satisfied with my choice in the end. Here are some of my recommendations for Hong Kong:

Best Hotels in Hong Kong

  • iClub Sheung Wan Hotel  – this is where I personally stayed and found it to be within my budget, it’s modern, chic and quiet. The location is perfect as it was near plenty of restaurants and just a few meters away from the train station and the bus stop. Man Mo Temple is especially close. The bathroom was superb and the bed amazing after a day of exploration!
  • Bishop Lei International House  – boasts stunning city skyline views and offers an outdoor pool, fitness center, and free WiFi throughout the property. You can also enjoy the well-equipped gym, poolside sun loungers, and a quiet reading room.
  • Four Points by Sheraton  – offers comfortable air-conditioned rooms and complimentary bikes for your use. Each room is well-equipped with a flat-screen TV featuring satellite channels and a safety deposit box. Bed linen and towels are provided for added comfort.

Best Hostels in Hong Kong

  • Ashoka Hostel  – enjoy clean common areas and dorm lockers. Their licensed facility ensures safety, comfort, and affordability. Additionally, Ashoka Hostel offers discounted tickets for popular attractions like Ocean Park and Disneyland.

Lantau Island Alternative Things to Do

Lantau Island isn’t just the Big Buddha and Tai O, there are still a lot of hidden gems around the island that you can visit if you so choose. A lot of them offer a respite from the much more touristy areas for a much more intimate experiece. Here are some of them:

9. Pui O Beach

One of the unique features of Pui O Beach is its blend of sand and unique black rocks, the remnants of volcanic activities that took place millions of years ago.

During low tide, these rocks become more visible and create a spectacular landscape contrasted with the bright, golden sand. Quite similar to the beaches of “ China ‘s Hawaii,”  Sanya .

Pui O Beach is also very rich in biodiversity. You can spot water buffalos and egrets in the nearby marshes! There’s also a public campsite behind the beach with basic facilities, where you can set up your tent and spend the night under the stars.

Mui Wo Village Pier

10. Mui Wo Village

The quaint and laid-back Mui Wo Village is dotted with charming seafood restaurants, local shops, and beachfront accommodations where you can enjoy an array of seafood delicacies caught fresh from the nearby waters.

The village also has the Silver Mine Waterfall , which is great for capturing long-exposure photos if you’re into photography!

11. Silver Mine Bay Beach

Silver Mine Bay Beach is located near Mui Wo. Named after the silver mines that were once active in the area during the 19th century, today, the beach is a haven if you’re looking for a laid-back beach experience.

This scenic stretch of sandy shoreline offers an ideal spot for sunbathing, swimming, or even just picnicking by the seaside. The beach is well-equipped with facilities such as changing rooms, showers, and barbecue pits.

There’s also a lifeguard service so you can rest assured the little ones can go for a swim safely.

Hong Kong Disneyland

12. Hong Kong Disneyland

Hong Kong Disneyland is actually located on Lantau Island, and as you may already know it’s an absolute treat for both kids and adults.

As the smallest Disneyland park, it offers a more intimate and less overwhelming experience, yet it still packs all the magic that Disney is known for.

You can easily get your skip-the-line Disneyland tickets through  here .

13. Shaolin Wushu Cultural Center

If you’re a martial arts enthusiast or simply curious about  Chinese culture , a visit to the Shaolin Wushu Cultural Center offers you a great insight into the ancient martial art of Wushu, which originated from the Shaolin Monastery in China.

You can join some Wushu classes here that taught by a Shaolin master to unleash your inner warrior!

How to Get Around Lantau Island

Getting around Lantau Island is a breeze, thanks to the well-developed and diverse transportation options available:

Bus: Lantau Island is serviced by New Lantao Bus Company (NLB), which operates numerous routes covering most areas of the island. Bus routes 1, 2, 3M, 11, and 23 will get you to most tourist spots. Although they can get crowded during peak hours, especially during the weekends, I’m not exaggerating when I say  I almost couldn’t get back !

Taxi: There are plenty of taxis around the island. They’re a bit more expensive than buses for sure, but are a good option if you’re short on time. Keep in mind, taxis in Lantau are all blue and only operate within Lantau Island.

Car : If you  rent a car , then getting around Lantau Island is smooth-sailing with plenty of parking spaces available near the various tourist area.

Bicycle: Mui Wo, Pui O, and other villages rent out bicycles for a leisurely way to get around, perfect for exploring the more rural parts of Lantau.

Foot: Finally, if you’re up for it, hiking is a great way to see the island. With trails of varying difficulty, you can enjoy the stunning scenery while getting in a bit of exercise.

How to Stay Safe in Lantau Island

Traveling to Lantau Island is generally safe, but like any other travel destination, you’ll want to take a few safety measures.

Beware of the local  monkeys , they’re often seen as charming but they’re also known for their mischievous habits like stealing food and small items.

And even though Hong Kong boasts an excellent healthcare system, it’s always better to be prepared for any eventualities.

That’s where travel insurance comes in. I personally recommend getting  SafetyWing , a top-rated travel insurance company that offers comprehensive coverage.

It’s better to be safe than sorry, so consider securing a SafetyWing policy for your trip to Hong Kong.

The Complete Guide to Hong Kong's Lantau Island

lantau island tourist attractions

Lantau Island

Lantau Island is the biggest of Hong Kong’s 261 islands , but despite easy accessibility, it remains lightly developed compared to others. Visiting Lantau Island is largely about stepping away from the dense, urban hustle of Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula. Life is a little slower—but not too much—and the roads are a little windier. In a country that boasts the largest number of skyscrapers on earth, the extra personal space on hilly Lantau Island feels welcome.

Lantau’s relative peace isn’t exactly far away. Hong Kong International Airport is directly adjacent—all the more reason to set aside a few days for enjoying Lantau Island before flying out.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit: For the most comfortable weather, visit Lantau Island between late October and December . Spring is also pleasant, but the months between May and September are hot, humid, and sometimes plagued by tropical cyclones.

Language: The official languages in Hong Kong are English and Mandarin Chinese; however, more people speak Cantonese. Roughly half of the population speaks English.

Currency: Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) ; prices are often written with $ or HK$ before the amount. Other currencies such as Chinese yuan and U.S. dollars are often accepted but stick to using Hong Kong dollars whenever you can.

Getting Around: Taxi is the default way for getting around Lantau Island ; the blue ones cover only Lantau Island. Taking one of the NLB buses (New Lantau Bus company) is an inexpensive way to reach places not accessible with the MTR rail system. Uber is technically illegal in Hong Kong, but it’s widely available.

Travel Tip: Major attractions on Lantau Island such as the Po Lin Monastery and Disneyland become inundated with domestic tourists on weekends and holidays, especially during spring and fall. Try to visit popular places on weekdays, and ask your reception desk about Hong Kong festivals and conventions that draw a crowd.

Things to Do

There are just enough things to do on Lantau Island to merit staying there a few days. No worries if you’re booked on another island: Regular ferry connections and the MTR make reaching Lantau for day trips easy enough.

Although taking boat excursions to see the highly-threatened “pink dolphins” is a popular activity on Lantau Island, the WWF Hong Kong and other conservation groups discourage the practice.

  • See the Tian Tan Buddha Statue : The Tian Tan Buddha statue at Po Lin Monastery is one of the largest of its kind in the world. The 112-foot-tall bronze statue weighs over 280 tons and sits prominently at the top of 268 steps. The “Big Buddha,” as it’s called locally, isn’t old (it was finished in 1993), but it’s impressive still the same. Enjoying panoramic views from the Ngong Ping 360 cable car while getting there is part of the fun.
  • Go to Disneyland : Even if you’ve been to one of the Disney theme parks elsewhere or the option seems unappealing after traveling around the world for something “different,” reconsider. Hong Kong Disneyland is much smaller and slightly cheaper than its U.S. counterparts. Perhaps the most interesting part is getting to see the Chinese twist on familiar attractions along with cultural nuances at play. You’ll also enjoy plenty of people watching!
  • Explore Rural Villages: Mui Wo is a small town located in Silvermine Bay on Lantau Island's eastern side. The air is fresh, seafood restaurants are inexpensive, and Silvermine Beach is the best around . Mui Wo is also the start and finish of the 43-mile-long hiking loop known as the Lantau Trail . Finishing the whole loop is hardcore, but you can still enjoy day hikes or rent a bicycle to reach even smaller villages. Tai O village on the southwestern side of Lantau is another interesting stop.

What to Eat and Drink

Hong Kong rests easily among the best food destinations in the world. With so many islands and bays in the area, seafood lovers have it made. Menu items in restaurants and open-air food centers around Lantau Island are so fresh they’re often still moving! The Mui Wo Food Market is one such food court that serves dim sum to a large crowd in the mornings then switches to noodles and seafood at lunch.

If a squirming menu makes you squeamish, numerous eateries serve delicious Cantonese cuisine and Western staples. Vegetarians shouldn’t miss an opportunity to enjoy the restaurant in Po Lin Monastery. For a simple snack, quick meal, or inexpensive noodles, call into one of the many cha chaan teng (tea restaurants) scattered around the island. Although the food on Lantau is good, you’ll have to cross over to Hong Kong Island to find restaurants that earned their Michelin stars.

Compared to the rest of Hong Kong, Lantau Island’s nightlife isn’t very rowdy. That said, you’ll still find plenty of restaurants, hotel bars, and ex-pat watering holes for enjoying a locally brewed San Miguel.

Where to Stay

Lantau Island is home to just enough hotels to suit all budgets. Of course, hotels near the airport and Disneyland are the priciest. Finding accommodation anywhere becomes challenging during the Lunar New Year festival .

Small, coastal villages such as Mui Wo and Tai O have some great choices for inexpensive accommodation with a view. Backpackers may want to check out the YHA Ngong Ping SG Davis Youth Hostel; facilities are simple, but Po Lin monastery, the Ngong Ping Village market, and local hiking are only a 10-minute walk away.

Getting There

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) sits atop Chek Lap Kok, an island of reclaimed land connected to Lantau Island's northern side. The town of Tung Chung is only three miles from the airport; taking a taxi or one of the regular airport buses is fast and straightforward. Blue taxis travel only to destinations on Lantau Island.

Culture and Customs

  • With a population of 7.5 million people, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places globally—that works out to roughly 17,565 people squeezed into every square mile! Don’t expect as much personal space or the typical buffer for waiting in lines as you enjoy at home.
  • Shaking hands is common in Hong Kong, but a firm squeeze is uncommon. Lower your eyes a bit to show respect when greeting older people. For fun, you can greet people in Cantonese by saying “nay hoe” (how are you?), but with English so widely spoken, you’re more likely to hear “hello.”
  • Smiling is good in Hong Kong, but winking can make people uncomfortable—don’t do it!
  • White foreigners in Hong Kong are sometimes referred to as gwai lou (“foreign devils”). Although the term is seemingly derogatory, context matters; it isn’t always used as an insult.
  • Chopsticks are the default utensils in Hong Kong; however, Western utensils are readily available. Use good etiquette when eating with chopsticks , and avoid the most frequent mistake made by foreigners: using chopsticks to point at different things on the table!

Money Saving Tips

  • Tipping in Hong Kong isn’t expected, but leaving a little gratuity is a kind gesture. A 10-percent service charge is included on most hotel and restaurant bills. You can still tip a few extra dollars for outstanding service. Always try to tip in cash directly to the waitstaff, and be discreet to prevent any possible loss of face . Keep some HK$20 notes (around $2.50) handy for bellboys and staff at upscale hotels. You can round up fares and let taxi drivers keep the change. Leave a few coins for bathroom attendants.
  • As is customary elsewhere in Asia, some friendly haggling is expected when buying from independent shops and markets.
  • Even if merchants accept payment in U.S. dollars or Chinese yuan (many do), you’ll often lose on the exchange. Use Hong Kong dollars (HKD) for all transactions.
  • Hong Kong and Macau are popular destinations for travelers from the mainland, even more so during big events. There simply isn’t enough room at hotels and attractions. Lunar New Year (January or February) is obviously a big event, but also watch out for the National Day holiday (the first week of October) and Labor Day (the first week of May).
  • Compared to other places in China, alcohol is pricey in Hong Kong. Most venues and hotel bars have happy hour specials; pay attention to posted fliers or ask the staff.

The Island-Hopping Series: Lantau Island

Header image courtesy of @surrphoto (via Shutterstock)

Originally published by Sophie Pettit. Last updated by Jen Paolini.

In this week’s instalment of our Island-Hopping Series, we take on the biggest island of them all. With sandy beaches and mountainous trails, a big bronze Buddha, and houses on stilts, (not to mention a sizeable water buffalo population), you’ll need to reserve more than just one day in your diary to tackle this getaway. Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to Lantau.

Editor’s note: Due to the ever-evolving restrictions implemented to combat COVID-19, many businesses are taking extra precautions and reducing their hours and capacity—or are temporarily closed. While all information published was correct at the time of publication, it is best to call ahead and check opening times as recommended by the businesses themselves before heading out to avoid disappointment.

How to get there

Taking the Tung Chung line is the fastest and most convenient option for those heading to the Big Buddha, clocking in at just 30 minutes from Hong Kong Station. Head out of Exit B, follow the signs, and you’ll come to the cable car and bus stations. If you love a bargain and have time to spare, you could swing by Citygate Outlets and root around for a gem or two. Well, sale shopping is practically money-saving, isn’t it?

Ferries to Mui Wo run every 30 to 40 minutes from Central Pier 6, with fast ferries taking 30 minutes and standard ferries trailing slightly behind at 50 minutes. Pooches are welcome to join you on your Lantau adventure, provided they ride the slow ferry with you and are muzzled and leashed. Click here to check out the ferry schedule.

Those heading straight to Discovery Bay are in for a real treat, with ferries running around the clock from Central Pier 3, a shack outside the pier serving sizeable beverages for deliciously low prices, and complimentary WiFi on board to keep you entertained during the 25-minute journey. Click here to check out the ferry schedule.

Once you’re on Lantau, you’ll realise that taxis are rather few and far between. If you’re in dire need of a cab, take the time to pre-book one by calling (+852) 2984 1328 or (+852) 2984 1368. Both will direct you to the Lantau Taxi Association.

lantau island tourist attractions

Yes, yes, it’s a tourist attraction. However, the Tian Tan Buddha is quite a sight to behold and deserving of at least one visit during your time on Lantau. You can hike, ride the cable car, or catch the bus if your nerves aren’t quite up to an airborne journey. Buses 23 from Tung Chung and 2 from Mui Wo may hurtle around corners at a slightly unnerving pace, but the 50-minute journey is a cheap and favourable alternative to anything involving heights in the opinion of our scaredy-cat Localiizer (no names).

When you reach the summit you can gaze up at the Big Buddha, go wild with your camera, wander around the nearby Po Lin Monastery , tuck into some tasty treats at the popular Vegetarian Café , and coo over the fluffy temple dogs which recline in the middle of the walkways. If you want to explore some other Hong Kong tourist attractions, such as the Grand Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas and Dongashan Famen , then check out the 360 Buddhist Walk ($290 for adults; $180 for kids), organised by Ngong Ping 360 , which tours all of these sights in one fell, three-hour swoop.

Plus, the Wisdom Path is just a 15-minute walk from the Ngong Ping Plaza. This hillside arrangement of 38 towering, engraved steles, arranged in an infinity shape, is well worth a trip. Weary sightseers can call it a day at this point and return to Tung Chung or catch bus 21 for a one-hour ride to Tai O and explore Hong Kong’s last remaining village on stilts.

If you’re looking for somewhere to pitch your tent, you won’t have to look far, because there are campsites scattered across the island. However, if winging it isn’t your idea of fun, why not check out our favourites? Pui O Campsite is nestled just behind the beachfront, which means you are in prime position for a morning dip. With zero fees, BBQ pits, and basic facilities, it’s well worth taking the time to fill out the online application form . Don’t hold your breath for a last-minute spot during public holidays, however, as places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

More in the mood for an all-inclusive glamping weekend? Don’t panic if your camping experiences involve tent pole-related breakdowns, as Long Coast Seasports has a collection of safari tents and caravans available for hire. Pitched just behind lower Cheung Sha Beach, you can also hire your watersports equipment here. Two birds, one stone.

Note: Pui O Campsite and Long Coast Seasports may be temporarily closed because of COVID-19. Please check their opening times.

The island-hopping series: lamma island, the island-hopping series: peng chau.

You just can't beat the look of wonder on your little ones’ faces when they meet Mickey Mouse and all his friends. With the added bonus of a Disney MTR train connection, complete with Mickey Mouse-shaped windows and the trill of his voice wishing you a “magical day” as you disembark, you don’t have to be a child to get excited about a trip to this fantasy land. The ice cream parlour outside It’s A Small Small World is a must, as is the Lion King show, and be sure to brace yourself for the adrenaline rush on Space Mountain. Leave your selfie stick at home, however, as in an act of pure genius, Disneyland has banned them from entering the gates. Now we can all rest safe in the knowledge that we will return home with both eyeballs intact. Day tickets start from $639 for adults and $475 for children.

Note: Disneyland may be temporarily closed because of COVID-19. Please check their opening times.

Pink Dolphin Tour

If you want to catch a glimpse of the rare pink dolphins that inhabit the waters of Lantau, it’s crucial that you do so without endangering them. For over 20 years, Hong Kong Dolphinwatch has been treating passengers to a sneak peek at these magical creatures. Tours run three times a week from Tung Chung New Development Pier, with around four hours spent at sea searching for the pink pod, and a success rate of 97 percent. With a passionate tour guide on board to answer all your questions, inform guests about the environmental situation, and give advice on how they can help the dolphins, Hong Kong Dolphinwatch clearly has the best interests of the animals at heart. Tours cost $460 for adults and $230 for kids.

Hiking boots at the ready, Hong Kong! Owing to its multiple peaks and picturesque views, Lantau is a popular choice for hiking trails and running races. Whether you’re chasing sunsets on Sunset Peak , making your way up to the Big Buddha via the  Ngong Ping 360 Rescue Trail , hitting the beach from Mui Wo to Pui O , or checking out interesting rock formations on Fa Ping Teng , there’s something for everyone’s active tastes. Here are some of the best hikes on Lantau Island for you to tackle.

The Island-Hopping Series: Cheung Chau

The island-hopping series: sai kung & clearwa..., tai o fishing village.

One of the more interesting things to do on Lantau island is to join Ngong Ping for a tour of Tai O Fishing Village —one of the last remaining villages of its kind in Hong Kong. Tai O, with its quaint collection of houses on stilts, is full of charm, and browsing rows upon rows of traditional, dried seafood shops can bring surprising results—hanging sharks or pufferfish anyone? If you're keen to extend your visit, then why not check into the picturesque, colonial-style  Tai O Heritage Hotel  and treat yourself to a staycation? Click here to check out our in-depth guide to Tai O and the things to do there.

Watersports

If you’re an active beach bum who shuns reclining on a towel in favour of catching some waves, then Lantau is the place for you. Treasure Island , based on Pui O Beach, has surfboards, SUP boards, and kayaks available for hourly or daily rental, starting at just $80. Note that only cash is accepted for equipment rentals, so come prepared. Perhaps your little one is something of a surfer kid? Enrol them in the Treasure Island Surf Camp and watch with pride as they get to grips with the waves on Pui O Beach.

Alternatively, head over to Long Coast Seasports on Cheung Sha Beach and browse their selection of windsurfs, body-boards, kayaks, surfboards... the list goes on. Rentals start at just $40 for bodyboards, and umbrellas and deck chairs are also available for those who prefer to kick back and watch others splash about in the waves.

Claiming a spot in our round-up of Hong Kong’s cleanest beaches, Cheung Sha Beach is a firm favourite for those who enjoy a quiet dip in the ocean and a relaxing day on the sand. The upper beach is deserted most of the time, while the lower stretch is lined with eateries and shops, including our usual go-to—Bathers.

Thanks to the Treasure Island Beach Club, a free campsite, and a scattering of shops and bars nearby, Pui O Beach ’s popularity remains unwavering. Plus, you’ll probably encounter some water buffalo on the short walk there which makes you feel like you’ve achieved some one on one time with nature during your escape from the city.

As the mainstay of Discovery Bay residents, Tai Pak Beach is the perfect place for a family day out. With restaurants lining the sand, basic facilities on site, and a playground at the far end, you’ll have no problem keeping everyone entertained.

Restaurants

We’re all for alfresco dining with a great view over the water, especially when tasty seafood is thrown into the mix. Feeling jazzy? Well, Thursday is your night, with musicians from around the world entertaining diners at  22° North  in Discovery Bay as they tuck into a candlelit dinner beneath the palm trees. Similarly, with spectacular live music and comforting plant-based fare aplenty, Hemingway’s DB is another seafront hang out on the D’Deck which we can’t resist. Following a complete menu revamp where the entire restaurant has committed to meat-free dishes, well, why would you go anywhere else?

Discovery Bay staple  Solera Spanish Restaurant  offers a splash of colour and charm to an otherwise soulless dining scene. The menu offers both traditional and contemporary Spanish cuisine, with an impressive range of salads, soups, pasta, and paella dishes, as well as six tantalising desserts that aim to satisfy all taste buds.

In addition to a tempting selection of tapas classics,  Tap Tap  in Pui O also serves up a hearty breakfast menu throughout the day, for those who are not so sharing and caring with their food. With a warm, friendly atmosphere and a keen interest in sourcing local produce to support the community, Tap Tap has made it onto our editor’s picks.

For a slightly more sophisticated menu whilst retaining the ocean view, head over to  Bathers  on Lower Cheung Sha Beach. With blackboard specials keeping the menu fresh and exciting, seafood is definitely the order of the day at this tasty oasis. And finally, last but not least, if you’re feeling peckish while exploring Mui Wo, check out our in-depth guide for what to eat there.

The BEST Lantau Island Itinerary (Things To Do & Complete Guide)

A trip to Hong Kong is not complete without a visit to the one and only Lantau Island.

This one day Lantau Island itinerary will bring you to the famous 100+ foot Big Buddha (Tian Tan), the Po Lin Monastery, some hiking opportunities, the Tai O fishing village, and plenty more.

These top things to do on Lantau Island will give you a sense of what area is all about and help you get going in the right direction. So if you are heading to Hong Kong and want to set aside a half or full day at Lantau, read on!

1) A Lantau Island Overview

A Lantau Island day trip is a must do for anyone who visits Hong Kong .

It is a great way to spend some time outside the city itself and get to experience some amazing things that Hong Kong has to offer.

Depending on how long you want to spend there and what types of activities you want to do, there is plenty to choose from.

After an easy train ride from downtown Hong Kong, you will be way outside the city center and surrounded by the mountains, nature, and culture that HK has to offer.

This Lantau Island itinerary will start you off with the one of a kind glass bottomed cable car to get up to Ngong Ping village.

You will then be able to explore the Tian Tan Big Buddha itself along with other sites around the area such as the Po Lin Monastery and Wisdom Path.

Options to hike around the island and visit the Tai O fishing village can also be added to the agenda.

The rest of the guide will go over all that and plenty more things to do in Lantau Island during a day trip!

2) Lantau Island Attractions & Map

Below is a list of the Lantau Island attractions alongside a map that shows you the attractions, points of interest, and transportation stops.

As you read along you can reference back to this map to give you an idea of where everything is located as you make your way around the area.

  • Ngong Ping Cable Car
  • Ngong Ping Village
  • Tian Tan Buddha
  • Po Lin Monastery
  • Wisdom Path

3) How to Get to Lantau Island

While Lantau Island is a large area, most people who visit take the Ngong Ping cable car up to see the Big Buddha and surrounding attractions. Getting to the Ngong Ping cable car will start nearby the main Tung Chung Station (which the below logistics will cover).

However, there are also many other things to do on Lantau Island that are further away from that main area. I will mention those attractions later on in this overview, and talk through how to get to them from the Tung Chung area.

There are a few main ways to get to Lantau Island depending on your preference – MTR, bus, or taxi.

MTR to Lantau Island

Due to Hong Kong’s easy to use MTR system, you will be able to take the train directly to Lantau Island from downtown Hong Kong.

In order to do so you just have to get onto the Tung Chung (orange) line and take it all the way to the Tung Chung stop.

The orange line starts at Central Station on Hong Kong Island, and from there it passes through Kowloon Station on the Kowloon side.

Just hop on at whatever station works best for you, and take the journey out to Lantau.

From Central Station it will take about 40 minutes to get there, with a slightly shorter time from Kowloon.

Bus to Lantau Island

A second public transportation option is to take the bus from Central Station out to Lantau Island.

This can be done by hopping on the E11/E11A/E11B bus line. These routes will take between 45-60 minutes depending on time of day and route.

In my opinion, since the MTR is such an efficient mode of transport, I would recommend simply going with that.

Taxi to Lantau Island

The last main option to consider is taking a taxi from Hong Kong to Lantau Island. For those that want to avoid public transport and be driven from point A to point B, this will be for you.

A taxi will be much more expensive than the MTR/bus, but it will be quicker and more efficient given there are not any issues with traffic.

Expect a taxi to cost around $30 USD from the Central Station area to the Tung Chung Station on Lantau.

4) Ngong Ping Cable Car

After arriving at the Tung Chung Station you will then need to get to Ngong Ping, which is where the Big Buddha is located. Well, thankfully there is a beautiful 25 minute cable car that will take you this route.

This cable car ride is an attraction on its own and one of the best things to do on Lantau Island.

Throughout the journey you will be able to take in some beautiful views of the lush natural setting and the surrounding sea.

Now, there are actually a few different selections to choose from when purchasing tickets for the cable car ride – Standard, Crystal, and Crystal+ (note that private cabins are also available for an extra cost).

  • Standard : this is a basic cable car cabin, with glass windows on all sides
  • Crystal : these cabins include glass bottomed floors to enjoy
  • Crystal+ : the more high end cabins include floor to ceiling tempered glass with enhanced visibility

Below are the hours that the cable car runs as well as the prices for the different cabin options:

Ngong Ping Cable Car Hours

  • 10:00AM – 6:00PM (Monday – Friday)
  • 9:00AM – 6:30PM (Saturday & Sunday)
  • Schedule may change based on time of year

Ngong Ping Cable Car Cost

Round Trip Cost

  • Standard : 235HKD ($30 USD)
  • Crystal : 315HKD ($40 USD)
  • Crystal+ : 360HKD ($45 USD)

One Way Cost

  • Standard : 160HKD ($20 USD)
  • Crystal : 200HKD ($26 USD)

Crystal+ Note : these can only be bought as round trip tickets with one way on Crystal+ and the return on a Standard cabin

Purchase Your Tickets Today ! Skip the line and save some time by reserving your tickets beforehand. Don’t be surprised if you come across some discounts too by booking through this official reseller .

Bus Note : there is also a bus you can take up/down the winding road – bus #23 from Tung Chung (45 minutes / 17HKD / $2 one way)

Once you have arrived up top of the cable car in Ngong Ping, it is time to do some exploring around.

5) Lantau Island Things To Do

Now that you have a better idea about the logistics of getting to Lantau Island, let’s get a bit more into detail about what you can actually do once you arrive there.

We will start off with Ngong Ping Village, which will be just outside of the top cable car station.

A) Ngong Ping Village

When you arrive up top you will first walk through the Ngong Ping Village which is mostly filled up with small restaurants and a bunch of souvenir shops.

It is a great spot to grab some food at some point of the day and to do some shopping. As you make your way through the village you will eventually get to Ngong Ping Piazza – the base of your trek up to the Big Buddha itself.

B) Tian Tan Big Buddha

The main highlight the Lantau Island itinerary will be the Tian Tan Buddha. Standing at over 100 feet tall, this bronze Buddha is one of the largest in the world.

In order to get up close to it though you will have to climb the 268 steps up to the top.

Once you reach the top you can take it all in and enjoy the view. There is also the opportunity to go inside a small museum underneath the Buddha for an extra fee that includes a meal at the Po Lin monastery.

Big Buddha Lantau

C) Po Lin Monastery

Once you have completed the climb up and down to the Buddha you can make your way nearby the Ngong Ping Piazza to the Po Lin Monastery.

Here you can wander the grounds of the beautiful Buddhist temple and can also take the time to light some incense outside.

Po Lin Monastery Lantau

D) Wisdom Path

A quick 20 minute walk from the Ngong Ping Piazza area is the Wisdom Path. A picturesque path lined with 38 wooden monument columns.

It is a great attraction to see as it is not as touristy as the other areas around Ngong Ping. After enjoying your time around the path, you can make your way back down to the village.

Lantau Tour Option

If you are looking to visit Lantau Island with a helpful tour guide, then consider this Guided Walk with Skip-the-Line Tickets .

The private tour option includes round trip cable car tickets in addition to a 2.5 guided tour of the Big Biddha and the Ngong Ping area.

It is the perfect choice for those that want to enjoy all that Lantau Island has to offer with some guided insight along the way.

6) Hiking Lantau Peak

All of the Lantau Island things to do mentioned above make for a great fun filled trip to the Ngong Ping area of the island.

However if you get an earlier start/have some more time to spare, you can easily add on some more adventure to your day trip.

As one of Hong Kong’s highest points, Lantau Peak makes for a great view and a great hike .

If you opt for one of the options below it can take approximately 3 hours to complete depending on fitness level.

You should also be wary of the weather – if it is low cloud coverage or foggy, not only will it make for a more difficult hike but will also ruin any views along the way.

A)  Option 1: Pak Kung Au – Lantau Peak – Ngong Ping

The first option here, which is also the more interesting of the two will start at Pak Kung Au, then continue westward to Lantau Peak, and finally ending in Ngong Ping village.

In order to get to Pak Kung Au you will have to take a bus or taxi from the Tung Chung station to the start of the hike (therefore you will not be taking the cable car up – but you can take it down at the end of the day) .

To do so you can hop on bus 3M, N35, or A35 and make sure to let the driver you know will want to get off at Pak Kung Au.

After the 20 minute bus ride you will arrive at the Pak Kung Au stop, where you should see the start of the Section 3 Lantau Trail path across the road.

Continue on this path following the signs for Lantau Peak and then onwards to Ngong Ping (where you will meet up with the Wisdom Path mentioned above).

Once you arrive in Ngong Ping you can grab some food and explore all the attractions around the area.

B) Option 2: Ngong Ping – Lantau Peak – Ngong Ping

Instead of starting in Pak Kung Au, you could also start the trek right in Ngong Ping as you make your way to the Wisdom Path and along to Lantau Peak and back.

The downside of this option though is it is a more technical climb up from the Wisdom Path to Lantau Peak and you will also be doing the same trail back and forth.

So while the first option is a point to point hike (Pak Kung Au to Ngong Ping), the second option to a back and forth route (start and end in Ngong Ping). If you opt for this option you can see all of the Ngong Ping attractions before or after your hike.

Both options are shown on the map above with the yellow icons the start of each route. Whichever option you choose you, once you end your day you can head back down cable car from Ngong Ping and back to the MTR station.

Lantau Trail

The hike up Lantau Peak is part of the 70 km / 42 mile Lantau Trail that loops around most of the southern portion of Lantau Island.

You will find 12 sections of the Lantau Trail, with many of them being hiking trails on their own (such as just the hike up to Lantau Peak).

So, if you are someone who is more geared towards the hiking & adventure, you can think about extending your hike to include more of the trail.

Lantau Peak Hiking

7) Tai O Fishing Village

If you decided a hike is not for you or you still have some time to explore, you can finish up this Lantau Island itinerary at the Tai O Fishing Village, only about 15 minutes away from the Ngong Ping area.

To get there you can either take bus #21 from Ngong Ping to Tai O, or taxi over.

Here you will find a village full of tilt houses along the river as well as some great markets to walk through. You can also opt for a quick boat trip around the area, where you might see some pink dolphins.

Once you have had enough time in Tai O you can take the 45 minute #11 bus ride from Tai O to Tung Chung and back on the MTR.

Lantau & Tai O Day Pass : If visiting Tai O, consider purchasing the Cable Car + Tai O Day Pass , which includes transport & a Tai O boat excursion

Tai O Fishing Village Lantau

8) More Things to Do on Lantau Island

While all of the above is sure to be a fun filled day on Lantau Island, there are even more fun things to do around the island. Here are some additional options to consider during a day out on Lantau.

A quick 10 minute bus from the Tung Chung MTR station is the Tung Chung Fort. The fort dates back to the 12th century during the Southern Song dynasty.

While it changed hands through the years across various dynasties, the current fort that is seen today was rebuilt in 1832.

It was even used in WWII by the Japanese army before eventually being declared a national monument.

Cheung Sha & Pui O Beach

On the southern end of Lantau Island are two of the best beach areas – Cheung Sha and Pui O.

These two beaches are right nearby one another, and can be visited after checking out some of the other highlights of Lantau.

It is a perfect way to spend the second half of the day as you get to relax in the sand and enjoy some time in the water.

You can either take a taxi from Tung Chung or hop on a 30-40 minute bus ride on the 3M or N35 lines.

Just a 20 minute bus ride from Tung Chung is the relaxing resort side of Lantau Island at Discovery Bay.

The Tai Pak Beach is the perfect place to find a spot in the sand and relax for the afternoon, while the town is great for exploring.

There are parks, walking trails, viewpoints, pavilions, and waterfront walkways to visit during your time in the area.

For those that want to spend some time at an amusement park, Hong Kong Disneyland is one of the top options to consider for a visit.

Disneyland is located on the northeast corner of the island and can easily be reached by MTR. From the Tung Chung Station, make your way one stop to Sunny Bay and then switch onto the Disneyland Resort Line.

This may be more so a full day activity for people, so you can consider doing this on a separate day than the Ngong Ping area.

Hong Kong Disneyland Front

9) Where to Stay in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is made up of two main parts – Kowloon on the northern side of Victoria Harbour and Hong Kong Island in the south.

Staying relatively close by the waterfront in either area should work out well.

Also take into account the distance to MTR stations as I am sure you will be taking some metros during your time in Hong Kong.

Here are some of the best valued hotels when choosing where to stay in Hong Kong:

Kowloon Hotels

  • New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel
  • Harbour Grand Kowloon
  • Hyatt Regency Hong Kong Tsim Sha Tsui

Hong Kong Island Hotels

  • Grand Hyatt Hong Kong
  • The Fleming Hong Kong
  • Harbour Grand Hong Kong

That about wraps up a one day Lantau Island itinerary. Take a look at our other Hong Kong itineraries and guides to help out with any other trip planning (like a trip up Victoria Peak !).

Walk around Ngong Ping Village

Ngong ping map

A visit to the lovely Ngong Ping village tops my Lantau island things to do list. You cannot go to Lantau and not visit Ngong ping – it’s that simple. This cultural entertainment hub can be found as soon as you step out of the cable way. Hard to miss, right?

Ngong Ping village has several attractions and dining options spread across 1.5 hectares. Some top things to do at Ngong Ping village include trying out the new innovative VR 360, Walking with the Buddha, Stage 360 and Motion 360.

Walking with the Buddha

The village also has plenty of photo opportunities around Chinese good luck charms and authentic wishing trees.

Did I mention the village is also very cute and artsy? I even saw a caricature artist drawing freehand styles and some cute wall murals.

Taste Artistic Flower Tea

At the popular Linong tea house , you can try their brand new product – Artistic flower tea . There is a free tea demonstration 3 times a day where they explain health benefits as they demonstrate the right way to enjoy a cup of this amazing flower tea.

Linong also has the cutest tea sets for sale. I spent 15 mins just staring at these carefully curated pieces.

Enjoy Surreal views from Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car

Ngong Ping 360 have branded themselves as the top tourist attraction in Hong Kong and rightly so. Where else can you enjoy surreal views of city, ocean, mountains and jungles in a long 25 min cable ride? This 5.7 km ropeway also gives you the first look at Tian Tian Buddha and I must admit, this is one of the best view points to the urban jungle of Hong Kong.

Tip – Choose the glass bottom “Crystal cabin” to really enjoy the birds eye view.

Pro Tip – Pre book your Ngong Ping 360 cable car ticket to Lantau Island here to avoid queues or disappointments.

Gawk at the Mighty Tian Tian Buddha

Undoubtedly this hilltop big Buddha statue of Tian Tian is one of the most sought after attractions on Lantau island. This 112 ft bronze statue is one of the top 5 largest Buddha statues in China.

Tian Tian Buddha

Symbolizing harmony and peace, the statue was completed in 1993 and has been a tourist attraction and mecca for Buddhism in Hong Kong, ever since.

Pay Homage at Po Lin Monastery 寶蓮禪寺

Po Lin Monastery

Located in the Ngong ping plateau of Lantau island, this monastery is surely a must visit while there. Po lin monastery is an architectural delight and several tourists and locals flock to pay homage by praying and burning incense sticks.

 Po Lin Monastery grounds

You can even see several cows in the monastery grounds. Yes, that’s right – cows! Lovely, beautiful holy cows loiter around and are often part of tourist selfies. Though there are several signs advising tourists not to go near, touch or feed the cows, it seems the signage is usually ignored.

Walk around the Lovely Tai O Village 大澳

Strolling around Tai O Village

Tai O village is totally different from the more urban and upscale Ngong ping village. Tai O is a local fishing village and gives you a peek into the traditional culture and lifestyle.

Since it is now a tourist attraction, several locals have started selling food, souvenirs and other items, to bank in on the influx. It is surely a commercialized little town but a lot of fun to walk around.

Tai O fishing village on stilts

You can easily spend a day taking pictures here and enjoying a sneak peek into local life.

tai o fishing village

For example, I have never seen a toilet that just has a hole – everything goes straight in the sea. I am not sure if it’s considered good for the environment (or the marine life) but that’s how the locals live!

Hike the Lantau Trail

If you are a big fan of adventure and want to try hiking in Hong Kong , Lantau trail is a good option to challenge your skills. If you are on a budget, you save up on the cable car tickets as well.

However, hiking the 70 km Lantau trail is NOT a breeze. Most sections are arduous climbs and can take upto 3 hours to complete (one section).

Another popular mini trail (2 hours) is from Ngong ping village to Lantau peak. Those who wish to catch the sunrise, can stay overnight at Ngong Ping and start at around 4 am for the peak.

Enjoy a Fun-Filled Day at Hong Kong Disneyland

Hong Kong Disneyland is also part of Lantau island. You can, however, reach Disneyland by MTR and then changing to Disney train. You don’t have to take the cable way or hike up.

Disneyland offers fun filled big thrill as well as kiddie rides, along with the spectacular live Lion King theater, Disney parade and several photo opps with your favorite Disney characters. Click here to skip the queue and pre-book your Disneyland tickets.

Embark on a Boat Tour to Sight Pink Dolphins

tai o boat tour

At Tai O village, you can hop on a boat tour for a chance to encounter the rare, endemic pink dolphins of Hong Kong. We did a short 15 min ride, which was included in our Lantau island tour.

Sadly, we didn’t spot any of those endangered beauties. However, I have heard from other travelers who embarked on the same tour and were lucky to see them few times in one trip. So, apparently, they are pretty common in these waters.

Going for a pink dolphin watching tour is surely one of the popular Lantau Island attractions to try – even if you don’t succeed in spotting any. After all, its all luck.

Buy Cute Souvenirs at the Fishing Village

I found the cutest souvenirs ever in the Tai O fishing village. Starting at just HKD 10, my favorites were the adorable sea shell turtles with spectacles. However, there were plenty of other options too.

Try “Husband” and other Unique Local Delicacies

There is so much to taste at the Tai O village. One local delicacy was called “ Husband ” which I have only ever found here. I simply HAD to find out what this delightful sounding cuisine entailed.

Basically, these are pork and shrimp pancakes. I also loved their logo which shows a pork chef and a shrimp dancing closely. It was hilarious to find this signage saying “Husband – Only HKD 28”. This cracked me up and called for a picture –

Apart from “husband”, fish balls and doughnuts are other popular local items but there are several more street food and dining options at Tai O and even in Ngong Ping village.

Visit a Cat Cafe at Tai O

Tai O village has cat cafes with real cats. Can you imagine finding a cat cafe in a local fishing village? I have never seen one before.. in a village! So, I would say add it to your list of awesome, fun, cool things to do in Lantau Island because hey – cats are amazing.

How to reach Lantau island

If you are worried about how to get to Lantau island then know that it’s really easy. Tung chung cable car terminal is the starting point of the ropeway.

To reach there, simply take MTR to Tung Chung station , then walk for 3 mins from Exit B. There are clear maps for direction and little scope of getting lost.

ngong ping cable way

Once at the station, if you have pre-booked your cable car tickets , you can skip the hour long queues and go straight to your standard/ crystal cabin.

You can also opt for to hike up via the Lantau trail which starts from Mui wo .

Where to Book your Lantau Island Tour?

If you are visiting for the first time and looking for a private guided tour, I would highly recommend taking this highly rated tour of Lantau Island .

ticketing ngong ping

I enjoyed the tour  (though usually I am a DIY person), as it had a lot of free time. So it is not really a hand-held type of tour and you still need to reach Ngong ping village on your own – which entails taking a MTR and cable car on your own.

Once there, you meet your guide and learn more about the island as well as get transported to Tai O village. Tour also includes bus tickets and snack passes.

You get time to explore on your own for an hour at Tai 0 and later you can spend as much time walking around Ngong ping village and Po Lin monastery at your own pace.

So basically the tour offers a discounted combined deal on all attractions whilst giving you ample time and space.

A wonderful guide to Lantau island in Hong Kong. I am glad to know about the flower tea and it’s health benefits! I would love to take a ride in the cable car too!

I didn’t realize how much Lantau island had to offer. I’m a sucker for wanting to try all sorts of teas, so I’d love the flower tea. The cable car looks like something you’d absolutely have to do — very cool.

I’d skip disneyland, but the hike from Ngong ping village to Lantau peak sounds amazing. There’s nothing quite like watching the sunrise in a new place.

I’ve never heard of Lantau Island, but now I definitely want to visit. It seems like there are so many things you could do here! I love that they have a delicacy called “husbands”. Lantau Island Hong Kong - Introduction, Tips, and Tour Plan

Though threatened with continual development and urbanization, Lantau Island still stands out as Hong Kong's giant nature preserve with something like 50 percent of the area still public country parkland of wooded hills and often empty beaches and shoreline.

It is Hong Kong's biggest island , and there are great places for tourists such as Hong Kong International Airport, Disneyland Hong Kion, good sized hiking peaks and nature parks, villages and small towns for cultural experiences, resorts, hotels, and other places.

With now about 130,000 people living on it, it is still sparsely populated compared to the 1.4 million people who inhabit Hong Kong Island. It is still a wonderful place to go to escape from the concrete and urban crowds of Hong Kong.

What is Lantau Island?

  • Area: 147 square kilometers (57 square miles)
  • Recommended stay: 2 days

It is the largest of the islands of Hong Kong. It is about twice the size of Hong Kong Island, but it has about 1/10th of the population. The area near the airport is a rapidly expanding small city that is encroaching on the natural areas, farms, and countryside.

Transportation between the populated northern side of Lantau and the rest of Hong Kong and Macau is convenient, but a ban on private vehicles and circuitous roads makes travel to the rural southern and western sides and the parklands in the east more difficult. But as it is, most of it is still a quiet and more natural setting and is a wonderful place for bicycle riders, pedestrians and hikers.

Who Enjoys Lantau?

Children, adults, nature lovers, hikers, mountain bikers, campers, surfers, people who like seafood, people who like little Cantonese villages, and people who like thrill rides can all find something to do and enjoy in Lantau.

It is mainly a relaxing place to get away from the urban crowds, enjoy some countryside and sea, and a simpler, slower way of life.

What are Lantau Island's Main Highlights?

On the large island, there are many good places to go and visit. But these are the main highlights:

Natural and scenic

  • Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car
  • Lantau Peak
  • Sunset Peak
  • Pui O Beach

Theme parks

Hong Kong Disneyland

Our suggested hong kong island 2-day tour plan.

For an optimal two day visit during your stay in Hong Kong, we recommend seeing these highlights and doing these things as priorities in this order in a tour over two days. You'll experience the island's best scenery, nature, culture and experiences for a varied and enjoyable visit.

Day 1 for Scenic Countryside Excursions and Outdoors

  • Morning: MTR over Tsing Ma Bridge to Tung Chung Station
  • Lantau Peak and/or Sunset Peak
  • Lunch: Pui Wo or Mui O. Pui O is quaint, far less and has beachside restaurants and little restaurants in the village.
  • Pui O Beach if the weather is good.
  • Overnight accommodations in a local hotel

Day 1 - Morning Arrival

Go to Tung Chung's Ngong Ping cable car: To start the day optimally, avoid the morning rush hour crowds and traffic. So go after 8:30, and try to be there when it opens around 10 am on weekdays and 9 am on weekends and holidays.

Chinese crowds arrive around 11, and the line can get very long. So to avoid the lines and the pushy crowds, try to be there before the gate opens and definitely avoid the busy holidays and weekends. Try to purchase your tickets directly online or through agents before you go.

Transport: For public transport, we recommend taking the MTR to Tung Chung Station. It will take you about 5 minutes to walk over to the cable car from Exit B. If you take the train, you get the added bonus of going over Tsing Ma Bridge. See the Transport information below.

China Highlights' agents can help with purchases and private transport. We can facilitate a whole tour of Lantau and the region or accommodate you in assisting your Hong Kong visit in other ways according to your plans. We take care of the tickets and transportation.

Get an Octopus card: Hong Kong is fairly unique in the world because you can purchase a card that you can swipe to pay for MTR and bus fares, and it might also be used to pay for many other things such as purchases at supermarkets, convenience stores, and restaurants.

The card allows people to travel without standing in line to buy tickets. Cardholders simply swipe their cards and their fares are deducted electronically. You can buy these at the MTR station ticket windows and then use them for more convenience to pay for things in the park.

No ID is required to buy one, and you can add money as you wish and return the card to a station window for some money back.

Morning - Enjoy the Peaks

Ride the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car : The ride takes about 25 minutes. Hopefully, by getting your tickets beforehand, you're waiting time will only be a few minutes. It is the longest bi-cable system in Asia.

Ngong Ping Village: The cable car station is at Ngong Ping Village. Entertainment, tea houses, and food outlets are available.

Hike up Lantau Peak: If you are fit, a hike up Lantau Peak is a memorable adventure. But be careful if it is a rainy day since the rocky steps are slick. The rocks are also sort of unstable. It is a fairly hard stair climb for an hour. For more information, see the Lantau Peak section of Lantau Island Hiking Guide .

However, you don't need to go all the way to the top to enjoy the mountain. You can stop along the way, enjoy the views and turn back. Alternatively, you can walk the Lantau Trail to Pak Kung Au in about 2 and a half to 3 hours. Pak Kung Au has a little bus station where you can catch the 3M to Pui O and Mui Wo or catch a taxi. Since you are going downhill, the walk down might not prove so strenuous. Pak Kung Au is in between Sunset Peak and Lantau Peak.

If you have the energy, you might want to continue on and walk the Lantau Trail up towards Sunset Peak and see some views, but walking a full round trip from Pak Kung Au to the top of Sunset Peak and back to the bus station takes about 3 to 5 hours depending on your condition and how long you stop along the way. Try to save your time and energy for the afternoon.

If you decide to just stay in the Po Lin Monastery area, you can catch Bus 2 from the bus station down to Pui O and Mui Wo.

Have lunch: You can have lunch at Pui O or Mui Wo. If you want to go to the beach, go to Pui O. Its beach is much better than Mui Wo's beach and has beachfront cafes and restaurants.

Mui Wo is a bigger and more developed tourist town.

Afternoon - Enjoy the Restaurants/Beach/Sightseeing

Both Mui Wo and Pui O are good places to relax, stroll around, and sightsee. At Pui O, you can rent surfboards if the waves are up. You can also go on the water in canoes and small boats. It is a nice sandy beach and cleaner than Mui Wo's beach.

Both towns have water buffalos walking around in them. Don't be afraid of them, but don't purposefully spook them either.

Dinner: There are many more restaurants to choose from in Mui Wo than Pui O. You can find accommodations for the night in either town.

Day 2 Option 1 - Disneyland Hong Kong

If you really want to go to Disneyland, then we recommend you make it a full day trip.

  • Hong Kong Disneyland (full day) See Disneyland below for the full day tour plan.

China Highlights' agents can help with purchases and private transport. We can facilitate a whole One-Day Hong Kong Disneyland Visit as per the described Tour Plan or accommodate you in other ways according to your plans. We can take care of the tickets and transportation.

Public transport: At the end of the day at Disneyland, you can use the MTR to go back.

Day 2 Option 2 - Noah's Ark/Olympic Trail/Mui Wo

For a more varied experiences, especially suited for someone who wants more outdoor and local culture experiences, for older adults, or for families with small children, we suggest:

  • Noah's Ark Theme Park (half day)
  • Lunch or dinner on Ma Wan Island
  • If there is time and you want to hike more: Olympic Trail to Mui Wo. A late afternoon/evening walk catching the sunset is especially beautiful if the weather is good.
  • Take the Star Ferry back to Central

Ma Wan Island and Noah's Ark Theme Park are gentler, smaller, and quieter attractions better suited for small children and older adults than Disneyland. This small island is adjacent to Lantau and is connected by another big bridge.

The huge Ark replica is interesting as is the view of Tsing Ma Bridge (from below). There is a small hill to hike that has excellent scenery including another huge bridge, free gardens, museums, small parks and public beach.

The beach is clean, has lifeguards and public facilities, and it is better suited for small children than Pui O's beach or Mui Wo's beach. The waves are gentler, and it is quieter.

Dining: Noah's Ark Harvest House is known for their excellent seafood buffets and children friendly atmosphere. There is also a selection of assorted cafes and restaurants along the beachfront.

Olympic Trail: This is a well paved walking and biking path down to Mui Wo. If you do the walk in the late afternoon or evening, you can be rewarded with beautiful sunset views over Mui Wo. You could have dinner in Mui Wo.

Transport: Board a ferry back to Central. We recommend the slow ferry. It takes about an hour, but the excellent scenery and relaxed ride is a good way to rest, unwind, and be refreshed. The fast ferry will get you back in about 40 minutes. See Transport information below.

Disneyland Hong Kong is a fairly small but popular theme park attracting about 8 million visitors a year as of 2019, and they are adding new facilities.

This theme park is part of the Disneyland chain of amusement parks and is mainly designed for children and adults who like thrill rides. Its small area makes it mainly suited for a day visit.

  • It has seven theme lands: Main Street, USA, Adventureland, Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Point, Toy Story Land, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland.
  • Three big, plush hotels/resorts provide luxury overnight accommodations and entertainments.
  • For fast transport, a special MTR Line connects it to the MTR metro system.

Po Lin Monastery

Po Lin Monastery: It is a Buddhist worship area and tourist area with one of the world's biggest metal Buddhas.

  • Tian Tan Buddha is one of the world's largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha statues.
  • It has a popular vegetarian restaurant.

The Lantau Island and Po Lin Monastery 1-Day Seat-in-Coach Tour is an option.

The Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car

  • The Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car is a visually spectacular 5.7 kilometers bi-cable elevated car.
  • It provides quick access in 25 minutes from the MTR Tung Chung Station to Lantau Peak, the Lantau Trail hiking path, the parkland areas, and Po Lin Monastery.
  • The ride provides breathtaking vistas of the contrasting often deep blue sea and lush green mountainsides.

Tai O (a Tiny Village on Stilts)

  • Tai O is a real, ancient Chinese Hong Kong village on the western extreme of Lantau Island.
  • A community of fishermen with seafood restaurants
  • Known as a village of houses built on wooden stilts in the water

Tsing Ma Bridge

  • Tsing Ma Bridge is the world's 11th-longest span suspension bridge.
  • It looks like the Golden Gate Bridge, but it is stouter and heavier looking. Its 1,377 meter (4,518 feet) main span is the heaviest and longest of all the bridges in the world that carry rail traffic.
  • The bridge allows quick access between the nearby Hong Kong urban area and the airport on Lantau Island.

Peaks and Parklands

Lantau Peak is the second highest summit in Hong Kong with an elevation of 934 meters (3,064 feet). The climb, starting from Po Lin, takes about one hour. It is one of the best spots to catch the sunrise .

Sunset Mountain is the third highest peak in Hong Kong at a height of 869 meters (2,851 feet). You can start from Mui Wo and hike up the Lantau Trail. This climb takes about 2½ to 4 hours depending on your fitness and conditions. The beautiful sunset is the best reward for your effort.

The Lantau Trail

The Lantau Trail traverses through large country parks, over low mountains that you can hike to the top of, and by good beaches, and it connects with other hiking paths. The hiking paths on Lantau are among Hong Kong's best.

  • Three country parks: Lantau North Extension, Lantau North, Lantau South
  • Mountains: Lantau Peak and Sunset Peak are Hong Kong's second and third highest mountains in Hong Kong.
  • Other highlights: Cheungsha Beach, Tai O, Pui O and Pui O Beach
  • Time needed: Hiking the whole trail takes days.
  • Rigor: Moderate

Hiking is an excellent way to see the sights. The trail was opened in 1984. The 70-kilometer trail is a loop, starting and finishing in Mui Wo. It takes two or three days to finish the whole route.

It has distance posts marking every 500 meters. There are sign boards and maps at trail junctions and good facilities for hikers. There is a variety of scenery from mountain grasslands to jungles to seashores to villages.

Beaches and Shorelines

Cheungsha Beach is about 2 kilometers long, and it is relatively empty. It is divided into two parts by a headland. The eastern side has a village, beachside restaurants, and a sandy shore for playing in the water. The longer western side has rocky boulders.

Silvermine Bay Beach is a beach that is about a 13 minute walk away from the Mui Wo Ferry Pier. There are lifeguards on duty at the swimming area.

Pui O Beach is a camping spot with wild camping facilities. It is part of Lantau South Country Park that is the largest natural park in Hong Kong with an area of 56 square kilometers (22 square miles).

The Best Time for a Visit

The best time to visit Lantau Island is from October to December when it is cool and dry. Rainy, cloudy weather usually commences in January.

The summers are beautiful, warm, and sunny, but there are occasional tropical storms.

Travel Essentials for Planning a Trip

The island is about 11 kilometers (7 miles) due west of Hong Kong Island.

How to Get There

Flights: Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is located off the north coast of Lantau Island. It is very convenient for international travelers wanting to visit Lantau Island.

Rail: MTR's Airport Express links the airport and Central, Hong Kong's business district. It only takes 23 minutes to travel between the two.

The Tung Chung MTR goes from Central to Tung Chung near Ngong Ping. It has a branch line at Sunny Bay Station to Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

Ferries: A slow ferry service is available between Mui Wo and Central's Pier 6 with a transportation time of about 55 minutes. The cost is 14.5 HKD for regular class. The fast ferry takes about 40 minutes and costs about 29 HKD. Prices are higher on both types of ships on Sundays and public holidays.

A 24-hour ferry service connects Pier 3 in Central and Discovery Bay. The transportation time is 25 minutes plus about 10 minutes to walk across the pier.

Nearby Attractions

  • Victoria Peak: As the highest peak on Hong Kong Island, it is the best spot to have a bird's-eye view of Victoria Harbour. Half of it is parkland, and the other half is mall.
  • Lamma Island: A much smaller but interesting to experience island east of Lantau.
  • Noah's Ark Resort: It is a family friendly theme park designed after Noah's Ark especially for children. The hotel provides good accommodations, and the restaurant, beach, and park facilities make it a good family resort.
